ell, 2020 was a year we won’t forget in a hurry! I know we’re not out of the woods, but I feel like 2021 brings renewed hope and excitement for the future. I bought myself two new outfits for weddings I had in the diary last year, which have been left hanging in the wardrobe, and I’m quietly confident I’ll get to pull them out this summer! So how are you finding wedding planning during a pandemic? It’s been a tough ride, but I hope the fact that Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding has been here, celebrating the best of the county’s wedding industry, has helped. We will always bang the drum for local indie businesses, they’ve weathered the storm and supported their couples throughout, now’s the time to support them in return. For those of you who are newly engaged over the festive period and Valentine’s Day – congratulations and welcome! We’ve got an epic issue for you, including delicious big-day catering (page 55), a round-up of beautiful waterside venues (page 23) and a celebration of showstopping wedding dresses handpicked by our fashion editor (page 65). We love to showcase reader weddings (from page 28), so get in touch if you’d like to see yours featured!

VIRTUALLY PERFECT

YOUR ESSENTIALS

A SLICE OF THE ACTION

We’re sending big congratulations to Kerry Hemms of Angel’s Kitchen, as she recently won Wedding Cake Designer 2020 at the Bristol, Somerset & Wiltshire Wedding Awards. Despite not being able to get dressed up and celebrate in normal award-ceremony style, Kerry was delighted with the win as it’s based on her wedding couples’ feedback. “After such a crazy year where I went from having 30 couples booked in to only making two cakes, it really was a fabulous win,” Kerry says. This year, Kerry has had to pivot her business, from making wedding cakes and offering face-to-face classes to taking her company online. “During the first lockdown I was live on Facebook two or three times a week,” she explains. “It started off casually, then people began asking what I would be making that day. I ended up baking live on a Wednesday and decorating what I’d made on a Thursday!” You can now find Kerry teaching live on Facebook for her own students, and for Cake Stuff – a cake supplies company for whom she is a brand ambassador. There are also lots of online classes available, covering everything from baking and decorating to creating intricate sugar flowers and models. Find out more at www.angelskitchen.co.uk

BRIDES AND BLOOMS

Last year, Izzi Stockton Bridal opened its new Taunton shop, Bride & Bloom, which focuses on bridalwear and flowers. Situated next door is the company’s original shop, which is now devoted to bridesmaids, prom and mother-of-the-bride. “It’s a lovely big space,” Izzi tells us. “It allows brides to have privacy and one-to-one attention as its appointment-only. Bride & Bloom stocks a wide range of sizes from 8 to 30, with the majority being size 18 or over.” With exciting refurbishment plans to the original shop taking place during lockdown, you can expect to see a layout change to adapt to social distancing and safety guidelines. There will also be an appointment system in place to give customers the best experience possible. Find out more at www.izzistocktonbridal.co.uk

IN WITH THE NEW

Like so many hospitality venues across the country, Old Down Estate has been closed for a large part of the year. However, the team used the time to refurbish the manor house during the periods of closure, and it’s also excited to launch its new spa facilities for wedding couples and their parties. From resurfacing the limestone ground floors and solid-oak floorboards throughout the bedrooms, suppliers and employees have been working tirelessly to paint and decorate the manor in warm, neutral tones to create a welcoming atmosphere when guests can return. Outside, the grounds team has redesigned the courtyard and landscaping to add fabulous bursts of colour and even more gorgeous photo opportunities for newlyweds. WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT? Hidden within ancient ramparts and protected by a moat, 14 acres of tranquil, Grade II listed gardens await visitors. With herbaceous borders, pretty pools and the scent of roses in the air, there are endless photo opportunities against the backdrop of the cathedral. In 2016, the gardens were awarded RHS Partner Garden status. The palace dates back to the 13th-century, and the romantic ruins of The Great Hall complement the majesty of the medieval façade and aweinspiring setting of the gatehouse and moat. The Bishop’s Private Chapel is renowned for its impressive stone tracery and high stained-glass windows.

Nestled in a secluded position in the valley of the River Brue, Gants Mill is home to waterfalls, streams and picturesque gardens, as well as a 1,000-year-old working watermill. Couples benefit from exclusive use of the secluded 50-acre river valley. Its idyllic floral gardens provide a burst of colour throughout its April-to-October wedding season, and parties have access to the mill, with a guided tour for guests included as part of the day.

WE LOVE… Couples tying the knot here receive a free food tasting and complimentary membership for a year.

THE GAME

REAL WEDDINGS

L

ike so many happy relationships, Jess and David were friends before they got together. “We met through church and got to know each other really well,” Jess says. “Things started to blossom and David asked me to go out with him in June 2006.” The pair started talking about getting married, but David wasn’t sure what style of ring Jess would like, so they decided to go ring shopping together. “We found the perfect rose quartz ring in Jody Cory jewellers,” Jess remembers. “Unfortunately, they had to order it in, so that meant another two weeks of waiting for the proposal!” When they went to collect it, a pricing issue meant it took longer than expected, by which point the couple’s chosen proposal spot, Prior Park, had closed. Google came to the rescue and they headed to Heaven’s Gate beauty spot near Longleat, where David got down on one knee just as the sun was setting. After announcing the exciting news to their loved ones, the couple got planning their dream day for 13th July, 2019, with a ceremony at Shirehampton Baptist Church, followed by a reception at Barley Wood. We caught up with Jess to find out more…

THE PERFECT SETTING The pair looked for a few key factors to find their perfect venue: accommodation, a room for dancing and a room for playing board games. “We looked at 17 venues altogether, but we enjoyed exploring the grounds at Barley Wood so much that we knew it had to be top of the list,” Jess remembers. “We loved that you could have it for the whole weekend. This meant that we didn’t have to rush and we could enjoy setting up, which we did mainly ourselves with the help of family and friends.”

PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON A colour palette of grey, green and purple was chosen, and the couple also incorporated their love of board games into the day, with a selection for their guests to enjoy, and also naming the tables after their favourite games. Jess had a clear idea of what she wanted from her flowers. “I really wanted succulents to be a main feature,” she says. “I was also hooked on having hoop bouquets for me and my bridesmaids, which our florist, Verbena Floral Styling, made happen. The men’s buttonholes incorporated the flowers used for our parents’ weddings, while the centrepieces included succulents and seasonal florals in wooden boxes and rustic stoneware.” Succulents were given as favours, as were delicious Florentines and biscuits from French patisserie Chouxfayre. The cake was a delicious four-tier masterpiece by Kerry at Angel’s Kitchen, with three edible tiers and one dummy tier. “The hoop bouquets became a running theme, so we incorporated this into the design,” Jess says. “Kerry got in touch with our florist to feature the succulents and flowers we were using, and she also added some of the detail from my dress.” Jess and David made the day their own, with 300 metres of handmade paper bunting, wooden signs dressed in florals, garden games and even a game of bingo during the speeches! “We hired some beautiful items from Kennedy Events to adorn the space, such as candleholders and a suitcase for our cards,” Jess says. “We made sure we arrived in style with an Austin Twelve for the wedding car and a vintage bus to transport our guests.” Friends and family were treated to some amazing catering options. “As people arrived we had canapés, Pimm’s and ice cream from a cart,” Jess says. “We knew we wanted a sit-down meal, and we opted for roast beef followed by crumble. David had his own dessert – his favourite, cheesecake.” In the evening, guests were fuelled by a ploughman’s-style buffet with pork pies, sausage rolls, eggs and plenty of cake! 29 

Award Winning DJs and Wedding Hosts “Made the day really special and delivered on all promises” “They were amazing. The dance floor was full from the very beginning of the night.” “Approachable, professional, friendly service.” “Dedicated, professional and accommodating.” “We felt they were part of our day, rather than providing a service to the day.”

Unique Elegant Fun Memorable Ensure your wedding reception will be both entertaining and floor-filling, by choosing our award-winning DJs and their skills, expertise and knowledge of amazing parties.

AISLE STYLE

REAL WEDDINGS

Jess knew she wanted a tea-length dress, but finding the right one took much longer than expected. “I finally found my dress in The Bridal Boutique,” she says. “The designer couldn’t supply the correct size in time, so I had the sample dress altered, which made it unique. I finished my look with bold yellow shoes with a turquoise ribbon, succulent earrings and a bespoke birdcage veil.” The men looked dashing in blue suits with purple accessories – the purple shirts were tricky to find, but they finally located some from Charles Tyrwhitt. They looked great alongside the bridesmaids, who wore tea-length dresses in purple, green and grey with coordinating succulent earrings. The flowergirl was super-cute in an aqua floral-patterned dress.

MAKING MEMORIES The day was all about creating memories and everyone enjoying themselves. “We had outside games, board games and a live band,” Jess tells us. “The weather was wonderful, so people loved getting out into the grounds to mingle and play games. The live band were a huge hit too – everyone was asking where we’d found them!” So how did the newlyweds feel on the day? “We both felt like we were in a dream and had to pinch ourselves to check it was happening,” Jess smiles. “There were definitely some nerves at the church though!”

A LITTLE ROMANCE Alex and Sean celebrated their micro-wedding in style at Goldney House Images courtesy of Nick Church Photography

A

lex and Sean got together after both swiping right. “Like a classic modern-day relationship we met on Tinder,” Alex says. “The strange thing was, I was working in the Australian outback at the time. I had to put the distance on maximum and I only got two profiles to swipe on – thankfully, one was Sean’s!” Alex had been ill for a while, so the pair discussed their future quite openly. This meant that when she got better they both knew marriage was a step they wanted to take. “There wasn’t a big surprise proposal,” Alex remembers. “However, we did slip away for a celebratory weekend at Burgh Island Hotel for a stay at Agatha Christie’s beach hut.” Sean waited for the tide to come in around the hut so they were completely secluded before he popped the question. The loved-up couple started organising their dream day, but the arrival of the pandemic soon put paid to their plans. After two date changes and a lot of rejigging of the guest list, they held a micro-wedding on 4th September, 2020, at Goldney House in Bristol, with a gorgeous blue colour scheme. Alex continues the story… 34

REAL WEDDINGS

We chose Goldney House as it’s a gorg eous venue in a city that means a lot to us, and it’s very close to our home. Also, who wouldn’t want to get married in a place with a secret grotto?

Couple’s own image

Thea, who owns the flower market stall outside Browns in Bristol went above and beyond for us. She created beautiful bouquets, pins for the men and flower arrangements. We kept it simple and elegant with blooms in white, green and blush.

REAL WEDDINGS

We only had six guests so we went all out and got them each a personal gift, which they had to find on our treasure hunt. From memory books and engraved luggage tags to rose bushes, we wanted to make everyone feel special.

Couple’s own image

Instead of place names, everyone got a card; I designed these as I run my own design company (www.gtdesigns.org). Each envelope included a long personal message of thanks, and the first clue to a treasure hunt that we put on for everyone!

If you haven’t had cak e from Ahh Toots, you ’re missing out! We ha vegan guests, so we ord d a few ered a large chocolate vegan cake covered in gorgeous flowers and fruits. Alongside it we re delicious gluten-free and vegan vanilla cupcakes with a berry and bay jam.

I didn’t want a big white dress, so I wore a simple figurehugging number; it was minimal but still made me feel special. I teamed it with my nan’s gloves that she wore on her wedding day. With his grey Reiss suit, Sean wore kiwi bird cufflinks that I bought him so he could feel connected to his home.

My family decorated our home for the evening. My mum and sister went to town with fairylights, balloons and wonderful decorations hanging in the windows. Everything was white so it gave the space a very open, light feel.

37 

I run my own company, so adapting plans meant a lot of manoeuvring, but the hardest part was that Sean’s family couldn’t join us. This was really sad for us and the most difficult aspect of changing plans because of the pandemic.

Alex’s top tip for couples getting married in the pandemic: “It’s far from ideal, but the most important thing is the two of you. Enjoy the calmness, and a day that feels incredibly intimate.”

The East Village Café we re amazing, providing opt ions that were gluten-free, vegan and org anic. For the non-vegans we stocked up on steaks and seafood for a bar becue surf ’n’ turf – this kep t Sean happy as he’s from New Zealand!

REAL WEDDINGS

For the love OF SOMERSET Louise and James’ big day was brimming with personal elements and touches to reflect our beautiful county Images courtesy of Jo Hansford Photography

A

s first date locations go, the work canteen isn’t the norm, but it worked for Louise and James. “I moved jobs and a friend got in touch to say he knew one of my new colleagues, called James,” Louise remembers. “He suggested it might be good to have lunch with him to get to know the company better.” And the rest, as they say, is history. James knew he wanted to propose, but hadn’t nailed down a particular date. “I decided that I would do it the next time that Louise suggested a walk to local beauty spot The

Seven Sisters on Cothelstone Hill in the Quantocks,” James tells us. “This happened to be on the early May bank holiday in 2018. We had a picnic dinner and I popped the question as the sun set,” James says. “Louise was totally taken by surprise!” The pair set the date for 25th May, 2019, and they knew the wedding had to take place in their beloved Somerset – the county where James grew up and where Louise keeps and rides her horse. Louise continues the story… 41 41 

We wanted our wedding to take place over a long weekend, with a relaxed party feel; Tone Dale House fitted the bill perfectly and gave us lots of flexibility. Our theme centred around horses and planes to represent our interests, while another key element was supporting local Somerset suppliers wherever possible.

We didn’t want anything overstated or too formal for our flowers. Luckily, Sharon at Interiors and Flowers by Design in Wellington understood exactly what we wanted. She came up with a brilliant colour scheme to tie in with the colour of my dress – she even supplied matching flowers for my horse!

Our centrepieces tied in with our theme perfectly. My sister and mum made wooden planes, which ‘flew’ overhead, alongside polished horseshoes on the tables.

Our cake from Mandy’s Classic Cakes was a fourtier semi-naked creation in vanilla, lemon, carrot and passionfruit and coconut flavours. Mandy was a little lost for words when we told her our theme was planes and horses, but she came up with a fantastic topper featuring a horse in a wedding dressing flying a Concorde – an aircraft that James’ grandfather helped to design. Our vegan guests enjoyed a lemon chiffon cake from The Planet Plant Cafe. 42

REAL WEDDINGS

There was a relaxed feel for the Friday night, so guests could get to know each other over delicious street-food style pizzas from Chanbury’s Woodfired Italian. For the main event on Saturday we wanted something more formal, so we opted for the fantastic Milkshed Catering. The team were so flexible and helpful, we knew we could rely on them to deliver amazing food and a worry-free service. They came back to cook us brunch on the Sunday.

James wore a blue three-piece suit from Halon Menswear of Shrewsbury with a bespoke wool tie from The Merchant Fox in Wellington, while the ushers wore three-piece suits with tweed waistcoats hired from Astaire’s, Taunton. Our two bridesmaids looked lovely in simple maxi dresses, which coordinated well with the underskirt of my dress.

We named each table after a fighter plane, and my sister drew each plane on a blackboard for our table plan. This was a surprise to us and completely blew us away – we’ve kept it as a souvenir. We treated our guests to laser-cut coasters, with a drawing of our venue on, as well as my mum and sister’s homemade sloe gin.

I found my dress by chance, having ordered one from Phase Eight to try on for my grandmother, as we weren’t sure her health would allow her to attend the wedding – luckily, it did. I absolutely loved the dress and had it altered locally at Heidi’s Sewing Room. 43 

We aimed to make the weekend as fun as possible, while reflecting the best of the South West. We had gin-tasting on the Friday night, with local gins bought from Rumwell Farm Shop in Taunton. There was also a selection of locally brewed ales, and no Somerset wedding would be complete without cider from Sheppy’s Cider in Taunton.

LOUISE’S TOP TIP: “Take your time, relax and enjoy it! Trust your bridal party to sort out any last-minute issues on the day. ”

On Saturday, Matthew from Birds Hill Days set up on the back lawn and guests were able to take part in archery and pistol shooting. The less competitive people were catered for by Quantock Alpaca Trekking, who brought along three alpacas for guests to take for a walk around the grounds. The ceremony took place at 4pm, after which we had drinks and canapés on the lawn followed by dinner. In the evening, our band, Breakthrough, helped us party the night away.

CLOSING CREDITS

My wonderful friends at Southey Farm in Wellington surprised me with an extra guest: my horse, Educado, or Eddie to his friends! He loved meeting and greeting everyone – especially those with Polos! His presence really added something special to the reception. 44

REGIONAL SHOOT

SHADES OF

Wuthering Heights Incorporating the evocative colours of the Yorkshire Moors with one of the most historic settings in Somerset, this styled shoot is full of romance and intrigue Images courtesy of James and Kerrie Photography

T

his styled shoot is a modern love story inspired by the iconic novel and set against a backdrop of the incredible Bishop’s Palace in Wells. “I’m so fortunate to be the in-house wedding planner at the venue, as well as owning a wedding styling business,” says shoot organiser Chloe Kennedy of Kennedy Events & Weddings. “The moment I saw the ruins of the Great Hall at the Palace, with the grey skies rolling overhead, I was transported back to my Northern roots. Now living in Somerset, I wanted to bring the two together.” Not just for traditional celebrations, Chloe was eager to show that the venue can be transformed into any style. “I wanted to inspire couples and show them that they can take this vast space and make it their own,” she explains. “I used repurposed props from my own selection alongside a rustic banqueting tablescape, with luxurious natural dyed silks and mismatched plates.” A team of local experts brought together whimsical flowers, a showstopping blue dress, exquisite cake and nods to the novel in the calligraphy to complete this beautifully romantic shoot. 51 

BE MARRIED Big-day catering options for every type of wedding

A

fter the craziness of the past year, many engaged couples are rethinking how they will host their big day – and this includes how to feed their nearest and dearest. Whether you’re holding a low-key wedding, tying the knot outside or waiting a little while longer to throw an all-out celebration, our local experts have got food and drink options to suit…

Intimate. Treat your closest family and friends to an unforgettable meal.

www.paxtonandbrown.co.uk

www.mesacatering.co.uk

It doesn’t get much more special than a quintessentially English afternoon tea, and it’s perfect for small parties. Caroline Gent Catering offers a choice of sandwiches from classic mature cheddar with homemade chutney to rare roast beef with creamed horseradish. This is teamed with delicious sausage rolls and a Mediterranean vegetable and mozzarella quiche. Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without scones with homemade jam and fresh local whipped cream and a selection of sumptuous cakes, from Victoria sponge and lemon drizzle to gooey chocolate brownies.

https://rosekentishkitchen.com

“Rose Kentish Kitchen has been producing high-quality restaurantinspired meals for weddings throughout the pandemic,” Rose Kentish says. “While your guest list might have to be reduced, it does mean you have a little more budget to really treat your loved ones and make your wedding breakfast extra special.” We love Rose’s crowd-pleasing summer menu… Starters Beetroot-cured salmon with pink grapefruit, basil mayonnaise and flowers Yellow courgette, lemon and feta salad Mains Free-range organic chicken and pancetta with rich sherry and cream sauce with summer vegetables Ricotta and basil involtini with rich tomato sauce

A smaller wedding allows you to choose exactly what you want to eat, so if you want to eat pie, why not? Check out some of the Pieminister options from Mesa Catering, which are all served with mash, minted mushy peas and red wine gravy… ❤ Moo & Blue. British beef steak and stilton pie ❤ Free Ranger. Free-range British chicken and Wiltshire cured ham pie with leek and thyme ❤ Saag Pie-neer. Pea, paneer, spinach, potato, chilli and mango ❤ Wildshroom. Wild mushroom and asparagus pie in a creamy white wine sauce ❤ Heidi. Goat’s cheese, sweet potato, spinach and red onion

Paxton & Brown have found that couples holding micro-weddings want a showstopping restaurant-style menu, and all dietary requirements can be catered for. “Our executive chef is classically French trained, with more than 35 years experience,” Henny Robinson of Paxton & Brown says. “He can create anything the couple desires!” How about this incredible three-course menu idea: Starters Diver-caught king scallop with pea purée Risotto of lobster and asparagus with parmesan au gratin Warm caramelised fig, pancetta and gorgonzola tart with seasonal leaves and walnut dressing

Dessert Rose-scented panna cotta with fresh fruits and honeycomb Mains Slow-cooked West Country lamb shank with salsa verde and mash Spicy Thai monkfish and tiger prawn curry with sugar snap peas and saffron rice Portobello mushroom, spinach and blue cheese wellington with roasted root vegetables and a red currant jus Desserts Paxton & Brown lemon tart, blueberry compote and clotted cream Sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream Chocolate chilli pots with chantilly cream 55 

Garden party. Enjoy incredible food in the great outdoors. “Rose Kentish Kitchen has lots of classic buffet and family-style summer menus to suit this type of wedding. Banquet-style is my favourite – especially if timings are tricky. We can serve everyone as they sit, so there’s no queuing for the buffet table, and it really gets guests talking as they share dishes.” – Rose Kentish.

We love informal dishes and relaxed service for al fresco weddings. “After a long day, the dancefloor beckons and you need delicious food to keep you going,” Caroline Gent says. “We present our evening food on rustic boards and vintage platters on a dressed table.” Caroline suggests… ❤ Classic West Country ploughman’s featuring a selection of local and artisan cheeses, Somerset honey-glazed ham, pork pies, homemade chutneys, pickled gherkins and onions, classic coleslaw and chunky artisan breads.

Mesa Catering offers a bespoke service to create the perfect catering for your wedding. The mobile popup nature makes it ideal for festival-style weddings, as well as more formal marquee celebrations. Couples can choose from Bristol-based Pieminister’s famous pies or a colourful Indian banquet courtesy of Thali Restaurant, with menus designed to suit a variety of tastes.

“Paxton & Brown’s most popular options for marquee weddings are our family-style sharing feasts,” says Henny Robinson. “Couples can choose two or three main dishes, salads and some dips, and everything is served with amazing flatbreads from Bristol-based Abunoor. Dishes are served at the table by our wonderful staff and guests can help themselves.” Some of the options include… Sharing mains Slow-roast spatchcock chicken with lemon Moroccan lamb tagine Poached salmon Spanakopita – spinach, ricotta and feta in 56

CATERING

www.mesacatering.co.uk

“Why not add a little theatre to proceedings?” says Caroline Gent. “You can have our chef and the team carving in front of your guests. Think roasted leg of lamb in warm pitta pockets with mint and cucumber yoghurt, or how about pulled pork in brioche buns with maple sauce?”

“The most important aspect in creating a showstopping meal is working directly with our couples,” Rose Kentish explains. “This way we ensure that they get food that reflects their own style and requirements. We love personalising menus, and get lots of requests to design dishes around a significant date, a certain style of food or perhaps a place the pair have visited together.”

This is the opportunity to make your wedding breakfast one to remember. Who wouldn’t love a delicious Indian banquet? Mesa Catering offer an incredible menu from Thali Restaurant with main courses such as Keralan chicken thali, Punjabi paneer thali or sweet slow-roasted pumpkin in a coconut and black-eyed bean sauce. All dishes are served with subji, dahl, basmati rice, yoghurt and Karalan salad.

“At Paxton & Brown our barbecues are a favourite,” Henny Robinson tells us. “Guests get to see the chefs at work – offering an exciting visual effect for your friends and family.” Barbecue menus include… Meats Thai chicken skewers Lamb merguez sausage Spicy Izmir lamb koftas Mini rib-eye steak Aberdeen Angus beef burger

Vegetarian and vegan Grilled veg en papillote Fiery black bean burgers Harissa and feta grilled corn on the cob Jamaican jerk grilled aubergine skewers Crispy halloumi burgers Fish Seared mini tuna steaks Mixed seafood brochette Lobster with basil butter Salmon en papillote Fiery prawn and pepper skewers

THE GOLDEN HOUR This romantic fashion-led shoot has us longing for midsummer evenings Images courtesy of Steve Lee Photoworks

P

hotographer Steve Lee was so inspired by the glamorous interiors and picturesque setting of Bath Spa Hotel that he decided to use it as the backdrop to a gorgeous photo shoot. “I wanted to create a fashion-inspired wedding shoot using a team of local suppliers,” Steve says. “My art direction was to produce softly lit images, which captured the love between our real-life couple.” Timing it perfectly to photograph the most exquisite golden-hour and blue-hour shots, the images evoke the feeling of a romantic summer evening stroll. Milani Bold Colour Statement Matte Lipstick, www.milanimakeup.co.uk, £10

“With a creamy matte texture this lippy is comfortable to wear and doesn’t transfer. Long-lasting it stays in place through coffees and snacks, but could probably do with a little top up after lunch. Plus, She’s a Lady is a super-feminine girly pink, lovely for a rosy bride look. Incredible value for money, it’s a great staple for your make-up bag. Why not try all the colours?” – Kelly Andrews

“This handbag must-have goes on like a dream and certainly lived up to its name. The wonderfully lush creamy formula glides on smoothly and stays on without flaking, making me feel fabulous all day! It left my lips feeling soft and smooth too – win, win!” – Sarah Reeve

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long-Wear Lipstick, www.toofaced.co.uk, £20

“After using a tint for the first time I’m a convert! This colour was divine, and what I like is that you can layer it up and build the tone to your desired effect; soft subtle pink by day and a deep red by night. It lasted all day after drinking and eating, and even stayed on when I applied a balm over the top. A must-have for your make-up bag.” – Danielle Harvey

“Straight away, I loved the sturdy packaging and precise applicator. The lightweight formula has fantastic pigmentation and the product has a matte finish. There’s no cracking or bleeding because of the avocado oil, vitamin E, and hyaluronic filling spheres, which I’m very thankful for as there’s nothing I hate more than dry lips! The beautiful shade lasted hours on my lips and I got compliments all day when I wore it!” – Olivia Gibson

MU LAC Velvet Ink, www.mulaccosmetics.com, £13.34

“The Lip Definer was easy to use, and I loved the way it looked. I put it on first thing, and by the time I went to bed it was still firmly in place, looking fabulous, even though I’d been in the rain most of the day. I had fun playing with the dual-ended pencil and brush creating a look that suited me and paired it with Unforgettable Lipstick in Legendary, but as it’s a natural shade it would work well with most colours.” – Melissa Barker

SHADE: UNDRESSED WITH LEGENDARY

“Historically, matte lipsticks have been my worst enemy – being a notorious lip-biter they show up all my flaws. But it’s safe to say that this product has changed my mindset. The finish, although definitely matte, is somehow silky and smooth. The best thing about this particular shade is that it’s bold enough to look like you’ve made an effort without being OTT – the perfect lazy-girl hack! It also has incredible staying power, but that does mean you need to be careful to apply correctly the first time as it doesn’t budge!” – Beth Morton

SHADE: NICE TO MEET YA

Illamasqua Beyond Lipstick, www.illamasqua.com, £20 “Upon application you could definitely tell this was a luxe cream lipstick as it has a balm consistency and left my lips feeling nourished with a noticeable shimmer. Plus, I didn’t have the typical drying of the lips, which I find some products cause. This lipstick is one to keep on you and reapply throughout the day for longevity.” – Danielle Harvey

Q&A

https://courtneymarie-photography.com

We ask two of the regions’ experts for their hair and beauty advice

GO WITH THE GLOW

Q We’re having an intimate candlelit ceremony. How can I make the most of the glow with my make-up? Subdued lighting requires make-up to be more defined, and you should choose to focus on either your lips or eyes for a statement look. Resist the temptation to load foundation on heavily; layers of lightweight matte-based foundation with a slight yellow undertone will look great in artificial light. To prevent flashback from the camera, avoid bases with high SPF. For low light, choose a highlighter that’s four times lighter than your usual shade and contour products that are four times darker. Baby pink or peach blusher offers warmth for lighter skin, medium skin tones suit apricot and darker skin tones look great in raisin or tangerine-coloured blush. Jewel-toned eyeshadows look especially beautiful in low light; ultra-glamorous shades of violet, pink, burgundy and gold will make eyes pop. Try the new Stoned Vibes palette from Urban Decay, and press the creamy metallic shadows into the centre and corner of the eye. Eyeliner blended into the lash line and smudged into the waterline will complete a smokey look. Apply false lashes for added impact. If you’d prefer a more subtle eye, then choose a darker hue for your lip colour such as red brick, burnt sienna or plum. Plump up your colour by applying a dab of gloss in the centre of the lips. WINTER WARMER

Q What style will keep my hair looking great all day for my winter wedding? And how can I get it looking its best in the lead-up? Winter weddings remind me of crisp, misty mornings getting ready, followed by cosy gatherings with roaring fires and mulled wine. But winter can play merry hell with our hair as we go from sleek to frizzy in minutes and curls drop at the slightest spot of rain! Thankfully, we have a toolbox of tricks to keep your mind off your hair, and last year my biggest win was the crown braid. It keeps the hair up and away from your face from morning to dancefloor, and it gives a relaxed boho feel. Not only is it easy to tailor with flowers or a decorative hairvine, but it’s also a perfect anchor for a veil. Don’t forget lashings of hairspray or blow-dry spray to keep humidity at bay. To prep your hair before the big day, I always suggest a deep-conditioning mask. This will work even better if you add heat. Simply apply the mask to damp hair and wrap your head in a warm, wet towel and relax for five to ten minutes before washing it off. The heat in the towel will soak the treatment into the hair cuticles, leaving you with super-soft locks. Victoria Spicer | ToryB Hair | www.torybhair.co.uk

HOT TOPIC Our experts solve your wedding dilemmas

Aisle style Q: How do I narrow down the dress search and focus in on the style that’s right for me? Finding the one can be a daunting but exciting experience. Think about your favourite parts of your body that you would like to show off and for the dress to emphasise. We recommend trying a whole range of styles – even the ones you’re not sure of – to confirm what works and what doesn’t. Once you have found your style, you can then start exploring which colours complement your skin tone. Next, look at the finer details of the gowns and play with accessories to give you a more finished look. If you like elements from multiple dresses, and can’t find one gown that encompasses them all, then consider the possibility of customising styles to create your dream dress. Susie Clark Bridal Reloved Street www.bridalreloved.co.uk 84

GO AL FRESCO

Q: What styling will suit our classic marquee wedding? A marquee provides a blank canvas that you can fill with your ideas. Start by welcoming your loved ones with flowers or a floral arch at the entrance, along with lanterns and a welcome sign to really draw the eye in. For the wedding breakfast, you could choose either long or round tables and make them look spectacular with garlands of foliage and flowers in the centre. Try adding a mix of candles for some romantic lighting; you may also want to add some taller decor like candelabras or geometric flower stands. Add drapes or pearl strands to your chairs for a stylish look. You can hang florals or greenery from the ceiling of the marquee along with hanging glass tea-light baubles and chandeliers to really add impact. Another great addition would be strings of fairylights draped from the ceiling – these will come into their own in the evening. Flower walls work brilliantly in marquees and provide a great backdrop for photos. Add a few neon lights to give the party vibe later on. Outside, bales of hay make great seating and a few garden games for entertaining your guests is always a winner. Alison Hieron | Creative Collections | www.creativecollections.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

LIGHT IT UP

Q: What props will give our micro-wedding the wow factor? To make your day stand out, we have a variety of eye-catching neon signs that can be hung from one of our gorgeous flower walls or frames. To really make an impact, why not let us create a bespoke neon sign to really personalise your day? There’s no limit to what we can offer as the signs are all made by us in-house – so we can create the perfect piece, no matter what your theme. The best part is, we can deliver to local venues and the products are lowvoltage so you just plug in for instant wow factor. Lauren Hayman | Kings Wedding & Events https://www.kingsplastics.co.uk/weddings-and-events/

True romance

Q: What is a classic romantic bridal look for a Valentine’s Day wedding? Valentine’s Day makes me think of red roses, ballgowns and a warm winter glow. A classic look with a vintage twist would suit beautifully. Being in the winter, a full dress accessorised with a faux fur wrap or shrug would be perfect. If you like a retro look, why not try a cardigan or coloured fur to complement? If you don’t like the idea of a ballgown, then I’d suggest a style made from mikado fabric. Ideal for the colder months, this heavy material means you can have a more fitted dress but with the richness to work with the season. Accessorise your hair with romantic flowers – orchids look stunning and are more robust than you think. Of course there are the traditional roses; try black ones, which are a beautiful deep red. Your bridesmaids will look great in warm, wintry colours like reds, greens or golds. Sarah Hackett | Rookery Bridal | www.rookerybridal.co.uk

Q: I’ve chosen a simple dress, but I’m worried it’s too plain. How can I make it my own? The wonderful thing about a simple dress is that it gives you so much scope to add accessories and details without it looking over the top. An understated gown is elegant and sleek, allowing your innate beauty to shine through. Why not add a beautiful hair adornment and matching necklace? Statement accessories teamed with pared-back dresses are very on trend. We specialise in making hair accessories and jewellery that match perfectly. You can choose to go as bold or as simple as you like, and we have a wide colour palette to choose from. You could try matching the colour to your bridesmaids’ dresses, or perhaps your best girls could wear simplified versions of your piece so you all coordinate. We can incorporate family keepsakes into your accessories for a personal touch, or you may like to include pearls or crystals for that extra sparkle. We will help you every step of the way to design your ideal jewellery within your budget. The wonderful thing about having pieces made by a professional is that you can keep them forever and pass them on as a family heirloom. Jean-Paul Berkley
