EDITOR’S LETTER
In with the new W
elcome to the first Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding magazine for 2022! For those of you tying the knot this year, January 1st will have marked a significant milestone as you draw ever closer to the big day. How’s your planning going? If you find you’ve got a little bit of extra budget for those amazing finishing touches, you won’t want to miss one page as there’s inspiration aplenty as always. As you know, I’m going to be a bridesmaid for my friend and fellow CWM editor, Melissa, in July and it’s taken her this long to talk her other half, Dave, into booking a photo booth. This was actually thanks to another of our gorgeous colleagues, social media coordinator Beth who hired one for her big day, and we were barely out of it all evening! So, these super-cool elements are well worth looking into if you can. The other thing I’ve learned since I last spoke to you is on the topic of shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses. Speaking from experience I can tell you that for your best gals, choosing that perfect dress for the big day could be almost, if not equally, as important to them as finding yours was to you. You’ve asked them to be part of this enormous occasion in your life and in all likelihood, they’ll want to give the best account of themselves as they support you. So, inspired by the unbelievably patient and all-round diamond Melissa, my advice is this: be kind. Perhaps they’ve got body confidence issues, perhaps they’re feeling the pressure – don’t leave it to the last minute, allow them as much time as possible to make their decision. You love your bride tribe, that’s why you asked them to be by your side. If you want them to feel comfortable and enjoy the day alongside you, helping them to feel their bigday best too will go a long way towards that. Oh, and don’t forget to have bags of fun along the way! To celebrate the wonder that is your bride tribe, I’ve gathered together my bridesmaid highlights from this issue’s bumper crop of fab real weddings. That’s all from me this issue, except to extend a very warm welcome to those of you who’ve recently said “yes” and are new to Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding. I hope you feel inspired by what you find here.

AND THE WINNER IS... The winners of the South West Wedding Awards were announced recently and the recipient of the accolade for ‘Something Different’ was Somerton-based The Flower Preservation Workshop. We asked business owner Rachel Ruddle how she felt about receiving such recognition, she told us, “We won! I’m absolutely blown away to even be a finalist for this award, but to win... I’m lost for words, possibly a first! Despite knowing how amazing my team is, each time I send out an order I still worry that it might not meet our clients’ expectations. We’ve completed thousands of orders and I still have this feeling. We’re so passionate about our work and to be recognised for an award is just amazing. Thank you to everyone who voted for us, we couldn’t have achieved this without your support.” The South West Wedding Awards recognise businesses within the industry that exceed their customers’ expectations and deliver outstanding customer service. They are voted for by the public, rather than a team of panellists, so to receive one is quite the honour. Flower Preservation Workshop specialises in designing handmade floral paperweights, which perfectly preserve clients’ wedding flowers allowing them to be treasured forever. Toilets might not be the most glamorous part of your wedding planning, but if you’re hosting an al fresco event they’re pretty much the most important. And this is something that owners of Wight Event Toilets understand well. After years of attending music festivals and events Sam and Ollie Haines discovered a need in the market for high-end luxury toilet hire, allowing customers to experience some home-from-home comforts. The business has gone from strength to strength over the years and the significant expansion of the past couple in particular has brought it to a point where the vast majority of its work is wedding based. The company now has 32 luxury toilet trailers and four luxury shower trailers and operates within a 50-mile radius of Bath. Its new trailers, available now, are super-stylish and wrapped in a wood-style effect – the perfect fit for rustic nuptials with a festival-vibe. Plus, the team can cater for any size of wedding from 20 guests up to 3,000. Check out the full range of toilet and shower trailers on the website at www.wethire.co.uk

HONEYMOON HEAVEN At time of writing the news is full of reports that Covid will likely be downgraded to endemic status before too long. And as we emerge from the roller coaster of the last couple of years resigned to the fact that it’s here to stay, we hope to see international travel back onto an even keel, and this issue’s couples have a terrific tip when it comes to a honeymoon hotspot: Venice. While the pandemic has thus far prevented Ruby and Adam jumping on a plane, the groom is in the process of planning a honeymoon trip to Venice this year for them both. Kayley and George meanwhile, managed to get away to The Floating City and had this to say about their romantic break: “We decided to book Venice as a very last minute mini-moon after the wedding. We were unsure how things how things would go due to Covid, hence the late decision! We booked through British Airways and off we went. My mum looked after the children and it was so lovely to have some time, just the two of us, to relax after a stressful couple of years planning a wedding during a pandemic. Venice was stunning. We stayed for three nights, which was the perfect amount of time to make sure we managed to see it all without rushing.” 9

ade and Harry met at university. Harry played rugby and Jade was part of the cheerleading team. Romance blossomed when they spent 22 hours in each other’s company on a coach trip through Europe on the university’s annual sports holiday. They made the most of the long hours on the road discovering a common love of films, travelling and generally enjoying life. Jade says, “Our dates were full of laughter and we always seemed to accidentally have that extra bottle of wine! Travelling and exploring the world is something that we both absolutely love to do and we regularly find ourselves planning our next adventure together.” Having decided they’d spend New Year 2019 in another country, Harry suggested Cyprus knowing he’d be able to propose in Jade’s favourite spot, The Natural Bridge of Koraka (Lover’s Bridge) at Cape Greco. Following a stressful journey through security with Harry hiding the ring and Jade nursing an NYE hangover, the proposal was a complete surprise. Harry even managed to set up his GoPro and captured the whole thing on camera for posterity. Join us now as bride Jade shares her treasured memories of the big day, 10th July 2021...
“Walk around during the wedding breakfast. We were served first and had time to chat to our guests. It meant that we had a memory with every single person without worrying about finding people on the dancefloor.” – Harry
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Having always been set on the idea of tying the knot at a country-house venue, the couple fell in love with Coombe Lodge in an instant, along with its views of Cheddar Gorge and the Bristol Channel. “As we made our way through the grounds up to the building there was a sense of a timeless mystique making us feel as though we were walking through a fairy tale,” Jade explains. The opportunity for an outdoor ceremony beneath the beautiful sandstone arches was also a major draw. “The guest rooms were exceptional with many having standalone baths and floods of natural light,” the bride recalls. What’s more, nothing was too much trouble for the venue’s team and any idea the couple discussed with them was met with a warmth and eagerness to oblige.
SETTING THE SCENE “We both love a party, so there was only one choice of favour for us – the beloved shot,” Jade laughs. They opted for limoncello, which is a favourite with both of them from their travels to Venice. The favours were used to raise a toast at the end of Harry’s speech with a hearty: “Yamas!” (“Cheers” in Greek Cypriot). Wanting to share with guests all of the beautiful places the couple have visited together they selected a table plan design entitled: “Where in our world are you sitting?” In a bid for chic simplicity place names were etched onto clear acrylic. The table names too shared a travel theme, named after favourite holiday destinations. Love Bridge was a natural choice for the top table. Each one was paired with a Polaroid of the couple in the corresponding location. Florist Stephanie Saunders created a combination of candelabra ball displays with a cluster of bud vases, and jars filled with flowers and candles to create varying heights across the space. Blooms included coral peonies mixed with white avalanche roses, eucalyptus and lisianthus. The bridal bouquet was a teardrop shape featuring white flowers with coral tones, broken up with foliage. Harry’s buttonhole was a single white rose finished with lisianthus and foliage.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD After the ceremony guests were served canapés of confit duck fritter with chilli and soy, wild mushroom and taleggio arancini, and sesame halloumi bites with chilli jam. For the wedding breakfast, there was a choice of two delicious options, as well as an additional one for those with dietary requirements. The starter was spring pea and pancetta soup or ham hock terrine with piccalilli. For the main, the couple opted for a more traditional choice of chargrilled Somerset chicken breast or seared beef, and the finale was a crème brûlée with fresh raspberries or a milk chocolate and pistachio parfait. Much to the chagrin of Jade’s mum, the duo chose a cheese tower over a traditional sweet showstopper. The six-tier tower of all that’s right with the world was expertly curated with the assistance of The Cheeseworks, and it was served along with a hog board and selection of accompaniments in the evening.
REAL WEDDINGS
LOOKING THE PART Jade wore a Morilee gown, which was the complete opposite to the style she thought she wanted. “Once it was on, I didn’t want to take it off. It felt timeless,” she says. The bride accessorised with a lace and diamanté belt and a cathedral-length veil customised with the couple’s initials and wedding date. Having always dreamed of wearing Jimmy Choos on her wedding day she was finally able to invest in a dusky golden glitter pair after a summer of saving. She also wore a personalised lace garter with a small blue ribbon – her something blue – and a charm with initials and date. Personalisation is important to the pair, so they also chose to have their wedding rings engraved with their wedding date and title of their first dance song, The Wonder of You. Harry wore a grey three-piece morning suit channelling Connery’s Bond, with a dark navy tail jacket. His waistcoat was a deeper cut than the groomsmen’s and his tie was blue as opposed to their pink ones. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in high-neck blush maxi dresses with embellished waistbands.
CELEBRATE IN STYLE A string quartet entertained guests during the afternoon with an impressive modern repertoire of hits from Beyonce and Avicii to Queen and AC/DC. In the evening, three-piece live band Renegades of Rock played covers of some of rock’s greatest songs. They performed two sets with a DJ set in between. “We had so many compliments from our guests on just how incredible they were,” Jade tells us. The newlyweds shared their first dance outside as the sun was setting. “We always say this moment was one small blessing following the pandemic, as without it our first dance would most likely have been inside,” Jade says. The photo booth too with its variety of props was a great hit. It provided unlimited photos with the wedding’s very own branded backdrop and also managed the guestbook. At the end of the evening all 12 guests staying overnight at Coombe Lodge retreated to a small living area upstairs for some final intimate drinks, which turned out to be one of the day’s highlights.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Jade tells us, “Surprisingly, my nerves seemed to vanish on the day and I remember feeling utterly calm and relieved that the day had finally arrived. I was so excited to marry Harry and couldn’t wait to see him standing at the end of the aisle, it was a moment we’d talked about for two years. I had the most amazing morning getting ready with my five bridesmaids, mum and stepmum.” Harry says, “I just felt excited from the moment I woke up. I couldn’t wait for the groomsmen and Jade’s dad to arrive for breakfast. The arrival of our guests was fantastic, we hadn’t seen many of them since before the pandemic, so the excitement of the day was boosted by the joy of being reunited. But the highlight of the day for me was the moment Jade turned the corner, arm in arm with her dad and I saw her in her beautiful dress. I was the last to see her and it’s an image I’ll never forget.” 29
“While you’re sitting at the top table, take five minutes to pause and take in the room: the decorations, the atmosphere, your family and loved ones. It’s a moment I’ll treasure forever.” – Jade

iana and Simon had been close throughout their school years, but it wasn’t until they reached college that their relationship started to grow into something more than friendship. Simon romantically proposed to Kiana on a beach in Majorca in 2013, taking her very much by surprise. They started to plan the big day in 2018 and fell in love with Quantock Lakes the moment they saw it. Unfortuantely, the pandemic forced them to postpone several times, but it did allow them to build a strong bond with the team at the venue and they’ve felt like part of the family ever since. Kiana tells us, “As wedding photographers we’ve photographed many weddings there in the lead up to our own and all of a sudden it felt like a second home to us.” Read on as the bride gives us the lowdown on the big day, which took place on 5th October 2021...

espite attending the same primary and secondary schools Ruby and Adam never really saw each other as prospective partners until the ages of 19 and 21 respectively. Adam proposed while on a family trip in France in 2017. Ruby, who had organised the trip, was pregnant with their first child and becoming engaged was the furthest thing from her mind. Adam managed to keep the whole thing secret for more than a year, and even roped her family in on the plan. They all had banners and balloons set up at the chateau they were staying in ready for the big moment. “It was the biggest shock of my life to date,” Ruby remembers. Join us as the bride takes us on a journey through the couple’s gorgeous wedding day... 39
I felt incredibly nervous in the morning, but once the ceremony was over I felt slightly more relaxed albeit still emotional. Adam says he just felt excited and so happy it was finally happening. I designed my dress in my head and Karen Reilly brought it to life. She’s based in Bristol and is incredibly talented. She helped me make some decisions along the way, but ultimately left it up to me to decide how I wanted everything. She made the entire thing from scratch so it was completely bespoke.
Adam wore a black satin tuxedo as did the groomsmen. However, the groom paired his with a waistcoat and a white orchid, whereas the groomsmen accessorised with cummerbunds and rose buttonholes. Our two pageboys were also dressed in matching tuxes. The bridesmaids wore dresses in different styles to suit their individuality, but they were all made from a deep rust red satin. Our flowergirls wore beautiful coffee-coloured tutus with white leotards and carried pomanders instead of flowers.

REAL WEDDINGS
We loved how unique Walton Castle is, as well as the fact that it’s all enclosed and felt intimate. It was also great that our closest family and friends could stay with us for the whole weekend. As a florist, the flowers were as important to me as the dress. I chose blooms I adore – rustic pampas grasses and structured artichokes, interspersed with soft white orchids and deep red dahlias, plus lots of green foliage and texture.
We opted for a simple threetier cake of chocolate, vanilla and coffee sponges, all iced with buttercream and decorated with roses.
Instead of a table plan we had a sign, which read: “Come as you are, stay as long as you can, we’re all family here, there’s no seating plan.” We hired long trestle tables and chairs so everyone felt a vibe of togetherness rather than being sectioned off. I put together large floral arrangements, which stood on top of the tables in modern gold flower stands and placed large rocks from the grounds of the castle at the bottom to weigh them down.. To represent our wedding rings I found a large gold hoop and decorated it with two asymmetrical arrangements either side for maximum impact. We had a banquet-style spread with breads, hummus, cheeses, olives, cold meats and other delicious concoctions. For the evening we dined on street food-style wraps.
41
My bridal hair accessories were handmade by Jacqui Weaver at Floral Creativity using a blend of gold, beautiful taupes with brown beads and pearls.
We booked a children’s entertainer, which was ideal for keeping them busy for a few hours. They all loved her!
Our live band played acoustically outside for us while we shared our first dance, then later played an amplified set inside allowing everyone to enjoy a good dance in the evening.
Do things your own way, not because of tradition or because of how others want things to be. It’s your day, no one else’s!

THE
OF HOME
Kayley and George hosted their big day at the groom’s family farm Images courtesy of James Fear Photography
K
ayley and George were set up on a blind date by one of their eventual bridesmaids a decade ago. Kayley remembers, “We went out for dinner on a Thursday evening and the rest is history.” Or not quite! George unfortunately got he impression that Kayley didn’t like him, which she puts down to nerves, and they didn’t speak for a couple of weeks after their date. Happily however, the friend who’d set them up stepped in and texted George to tell him the truth: that Kayley really liked him. Then, that really was that! George booked a weekend away to celebrate Kayley’s 30th birthday. He kept the location a secret until the airport when he showed her a video he’d created revealing the incredible surprise destination to be Rome. Kayley tells us about what happened next: “We enjoyed an amazing meal the night we arrived, which was my
birthday, then went for a walk around a beautiful square complete with fountains. It was then that George got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was a moment we’ll never forget.” When it came to selecting a venue for the big day the couple already knew where they wanted to tie the knot – George’s parents’ farm. Emborough Church (Church of The Blessed Virgin Mary) is right next door and their children had been Christened there, so like the farm itself with its magnificent views, it was a place that meant a lot to George. In order to get married at the church a special license from the Archbishop of Canterbury was required, so it was quite the honour to be able to hold their nuptials there. Read on as Kayley tells us more about the big day – 15th December, 2021...

I utterly adore my dress and felt truly amazing in it. I’d always dreamed of being a Suzanne Neville bride so, I tracked down a shop with a wonderful selection of her dresses and tried on all kinds of styles. I fell in love with Heather from the Classic Collection. I even got to meet Suzanne on the day as she was in the shop for a designer day.
George wore a navy mohair suit together with a light blue doublebreasted waistcoat and yellow tie. The groomsmen wore the same but with silver/grey waistcoats.
My gorgeous bridesmaids wore the stunning Athena dress in ivory from TH&TH Bridesmaids. Our children played the roles of flowergirl and pageboy. Ruby wore a beautiful handmade dress and Chester wore a navy velvet romper with a white Peter Pan collar shirt. They really did steal the show when walking down the aisle.
We had two beautiful vintage cars to take the bridal party from the hotel to the church.
Walking down the aisle with my dad, children and bridesmaids, seeing George at the end waiting for me was the just the most wonderful experience. I felt so proud to have our children there – emotional and nervous too!
46
A large green and white foliage arch welcomed guests into the church. There was also lots of foliage on the church’s window sills.
REAL WEDDINGS
We opted for an A1-size printed table plan by our stationer, Lauren. Friends had told me that creating the layout would be one of the most difficult parts of wedding planning. But while George was out one night I made a start with it, and did it super-quickly. Everyone had a blast on their tables! We had tall, green foliage centrepieces on some tables and stem vases on the others.
Our cake was one of our favourite things from the wedding. We decided it would be fun to use it to tell our story. There was a London scene at the bottom (where we fell in love), Glastonbury Tor going up the side (we live in Glastonbury), our two gorgeous children sat half way up and the Colusseum was there too (representing our engagement). Plus, it tasted amazing!
Hanging floral hoops and flowers were suspended from the bars up high on the ceiling of the marquee. We also had a stunning wooden circle bar, which we made a feature of in the marquee with a foliage hoop hanging above it – such a simple way to create a big impact.
47
Place names were printed at the top of each menu and placed inside a napkin with a stem of foliage.
The food and wine was a huge part of the day for us as we both love dining out together. It was important to us that everything was locally sourced and seasonal. We told a story through our menu. There were Indian tandoori flavours in our starter of scallops and monk fish. Then we dined on ruby red beef for the main (our daughter’s name is Ruby), full of traditional English flavours. Italy was the theme of our dessert – a boozy tiramisu.
The tables were named after memorable places for us as a family, such as Salcombe, Maldives, Amsterdam and Bracken. Each name was placed in a gorgeous gold open-out frame, which now hold our wedding photos.
I underestimated how hard planning a marquee wedding would be. Although it’s great to be free to do as you wish, we needed a lot of suppliers and towards the end I started to feel overwhelmed by it all. I decided to book a wedding planner a couple of months before our big day and I wish I’d done it from the start. She became part of our family, organising things, speaking to suppliers, listening to me when I felt anxious about Covid. She ran the day for us, making sure everything ran smoothly.
We listened to so many bands online trying to find what we were looking for and within budget. My sister-in-law recommended End of the Century to us as they’d performed at a wedding she’d been to a few year’s prior. We loved their music and booked them right away. They were incredible! We danced all night until the very end.
We were both so excited and couldn’t believe our day was finally happening. This was the third date we’d set due to Covid. For a while it felt like we’d be in the planning stages forever. So, being able to dance all night with loved ones was a huge highlight after such a long time not being allowed to thanks to the restrictions.

o doubt your planning checklist will already feature most of the all-important elements that immediately spring to mind the moment anyone says “wedding.” You’ve got your venue, flowers, cake, photographer, attire, catering, and so on. But it’s those extra special finishing touches that’ll make your personalities shine through and make this celebration of your love one that everyone present will remember forever. The even better news? These added touches don’t need to break to bank! We reached out to the region’s talented suppliers for their most creative ideas, sure to inspire you.
“There are ways you can make sure you spend plenty of time together on the day. For example, walk around while guests are sitting down for the wedding breakfast and thank everyone for coming, give out the wedding cake, or stand at the doors welcoming guests as they enter the reception.” – Chris Pitman, Cakes From The Soul
“Arrival is key! We see luxury cars, horse-drawn carriages and limos regularly, but have you considered a tuk tuk to reflect your love of overseas travel, a London bus for a city wedding, or a tandem bike to remind you of your first date? There are plenty of quirky modes of wedding transport to reflect your personalities.” – Craig Cheber, Booth Nineteen

Finishing touches to complete your day
“Hiring props to enhance your venue styling can bring your wedding palette together and bring the wow factor. Many are useful and others just add an element of fun.” – Gillian Thomas, Chair Covers of Bristol and Bath
“Why not have a wishing tree instead of a traditional guest book? Loved ones can write their heartfelt wishes on a ribbon tag, which can then be tied to the tree. These can be taken down after the wedding and treasured in a keepsake box.” – Alison Hieron, Creative Collections
“Create a photo montage of your life together as a couple. You could have this projected during the evening.” – Thérèsa Jordan, Hummingbird Events
“Speak to your suppliers and find out what they can do uniquely for you. We offer the option of a bespoke prop selection and photo booth backdrop. We can also use your wedding invitations to design your photo print template to match.” – Craig, Booth Nineteen 51
“Leave little notes on the tables allowing guests to write messages to you – a lovely way to remember the day.” – Chris, Cakes From The Soul
“Venues’ chairs can very often be dull, the wrong colour and frankly in need of covering! Solve this with chair covers dressed with sashes to complement your theme.” – Gillian, Chair Covers of Bristol and Bath

“Consider a display of some family favourites in a whisky lounge for a classy finish. As well as displaying old memories, be sure to save room for the new.” – Craig, Booth Nineteen
“Personalised signage can be a beautiful way of adding your personality to the styling. These can range from elegant welcome messages on mirrors to comical chalkboard notices. Neon signs are another fun way of making a statement!” – Alison, Creative Collections
“The obvious choice for live music is a band for the evening, but how about a musician performing during the ceremony or drinks reception? Having your special song performed live as you walk down the aisle or leave as newlyweds has such a magical effect.” – Lucy Harvey, Saxophonist 52

IS FOR NO WASTE
Food wastage at weddings is a huge issue, so find out if your venue is signed up to a scheme such as Too Good To Go (https://toogoodtogo.org) that connects its app users with businesses that have surplus food, allowing it to be enjoyed rather than wasted. IS FOR ORIGIN
Some venues grow their own herbs and vegetables and many caterers will support local farmers by using their meat and produce. Serving locally-sourced food at your wedding not only adds to the ambience, but also supports the community, ensures quality and offers sustainability by reducing the miles it’s had to travel. Check out https://queenandwhippet.com which uses seasonal and local produce from around Bristol, Somerset and The Cotswolds.

IS FOR SEASONAL
If you’re stuck for what to serve tailoring your menu according to the season is always a lovely way to go. Think fresh flavours in the summer or warming comfort food for the winter. You could even offer Christmas pud for dessert with gingerbread favours at your festive nuptials.
IS FOR RAISE A GLASS Make sure your guests have a glass in hand to toast your nuptials. Try some local flavour by checking out a nearby vineyard, and who doesn’t love a pimp your prosecco station?
T
IS FOR UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES
Whatever food option you go for, make it beautiful! Ceremony arches can be moved and utilised in your reception space – they provide a stylish backdrop for any food, dessert or cake table for example.
IS FOR TRADITIONAL
Have a think about the ambience you’re trying to create and that’ll steer you towards a dining style. Is an elegant, more traditional seated three-course dining experience your thing, or do you dream of a relaxed boho-vibe with food trucks or table planfree grazing?
IS FOR VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN One stress-free way to ensure all dietary needs are catered for is to create an inclusive menu with options to suit everyone. The days of bland and uninspiring vegetarian food are long gone. Alternatively, offer dishes with an interchangeable element should someone need a vegan or dairy-free option, that way you can still have your dream menu with just a few switches. Talk to your caterer about your requirements as they’re sure to have the inspiration and expertise to pull it off.

CATERING
IS FOR YORKSHIRE PUDDING The idea of a wedding carvery fills us with joy! Everyone will be delighted by a roast dinner and you also have that added element of interaction and entertainment as designated guests carve at the table in chef’s hat and pinny.
IS FOR WORLD CUISINE Spice up your life with an exciting international menu. If you love overseas travel and want the all-important meal to reflect this, talk to your caterer about serving your favourite world cuisine. Your wedding will be the talk of the town!
IS FOR X MARKS THE SPOT Don’t forget to incorporate catering options into your RSVPs. Your caterer will need to know of any food intolerances or dietary requirements ahead of time when tailoring your menu.
Z
IS FOR ZOOM It’s important to meet with your wedding caterer ahead of time and work together to plan the perfect feast. If face-to-face meetings are still an issue, or distance is a factor, most will offer a virtual catch up, so there’s no excuse!

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know
LEARNING THE ROPES We’ve heard about all of the different rituals we can have during a celebrant-led ceremony from hand-fasting to candle-lighting, but what’s the difference and how do we know which is right for us? During a Celebrant led ceremony, anything is possible – there are no limits to what rituals (or elements as they are sometimes referred to) you can include, as long as they’re within the current law of the land. It’s a perfect opportunity to really make your ceremony reflect your personality. Hand-fasting and unity candles are both gorgeous, traditional elements and can involve family and friends, plus you can still use them in a modern way. For example, you don’t have to use ribbons for hand-fasting, perhaps you’re both keen rock climbers and would prefer to incorporate a fancy-coloured climbing rope and some shiny carabineers with personal charms that mean something to you both.
As more and more families are coming together and blending as one, sand ceremonies are becoming very popular. A beautiful glass vessel is filled with different layers of coloured sand, each representing a person and the creation of one family unified. Your personalities should shine through during your ceremony. If you’re karaoke fans, why not have a sing song with your guests to your favourite songs? For Harry Potter fans out there, you could even include a sorting hat or make a blended cocktail potion as part of a wine ceremony. If you’re eco-conscious, plant a tree or scatter a wild seed mix. If you’re both creative, paint something together or as a collective on a blank canvas, which represents the day of your wedding and a new beginning – you’ll always have a piece of unique art too. The only limitation is your imagination. Remember: this is your wedding, so do it your way! Jen Whitworth | www.jenthecelebrant.co.uk 63
CAMERA READY
“I DOS” JUST FOR YOU We’re interested in using a celebrant to conduct our ceremony and would like to know the process. Can you tell us more? In choosing a celebrant-led wedding you have the opportunity to create a bespoke ceremony that’s uniquely yours, and memorable for all the right reasons! Once you’ve found the right celebrant for you the next step is to explore your hopes and dreams for your wedding. After sending out a questionnaire with some playful ideas for sharing as a couple, we arrange a visioning session that includes suggestions for rituals and structure, so you can start to visualise the form of your ceremony. Your celebrant can provide ideas for making it inclusive with elements of participation and collaboration. From here, your celebrant visits the venue and begins working on your wedding script, articulating your personal love story and suggesting readings, while designing a ceremony based on your preferences. You’ll have full editorial control over this and can tweak it to perfection. Meanwhile, you’re beginning to write your vows and your celebrant can support you with this, offering inspiration and guidance so you can speak your own words straight from the heart. I also like to offer some practices for you to explore as a couple before your wedding to help focus your attention and enrich your depth of connection and commitment. On your wedding day, your celebrant arrives early at the venue to set up the area and hold the emotional space for those present. This could include anxiety calming techniques, a neck massage or running over speeches. They welcome guests and conduct the ceremony in a caring and grounded way, to ensure the essence of love infuses the whole day and you feel truly supported and celebrated. JUST DESSERTS We want a showstopping big-day bake to wow our guests. Do you have any suggestions? Why not go all-out to impress your guests with a dessert table – an artistic display of sweet treats, all decorated to match your wedding palette and theme? Treat your loved ones to delicious royal-iced biscuits, wonderfully light macarons, chocolate-covered cakesicles, buttercream-topped cupcakes, fluffy meringues, mini morsels of cake pops, sweet lollies, chocolate-dipped marshmallows and even miniature pots of flavoured jellies. Taking centre stage will be your wonderful wedding cake, making it the focal point of your wedding reception. Sarah Churchill www.sarahssugarcraft.co.uk 64
Simply be yourselves. Our job as wedding photographers is to capture your day as it happens, as well as doing our best to look after our couples. I personally like to tell a story when shooting as your day unfolds and simply want you to be you. There is really no need to feel awkward in front of the camera, as with my documentary-style shooting, you’ll barely know I’m there most of the time! It’s important to get to know your wedding photographer before the big day. An engagement shoot is the best way to do this, as is meeting up or exchanging phone calls. This will all help to put you at ease in front of the camera. On the day itself I may prompt my couples with simple tasks such as, “Hold hands and walk towards me.” All nice natural actions to get the best out of you and your photos. You’re not expected to be super models for the day, so the best thing you can do is to relax and enjoy. It’s part of our job to make sure this happens (we don’t just take photos). Try to soak in as much as possible, then you can enjoy your album for years to come. Flynn Guard | www.flynnguardphotography.co.uk

We’re both a bit camera shy and are feeling anxious about photos on our wedding day, but also want a lovely album to look back on. Can you offer us some advice?
As your celebrant and wedding officiant I am devoted to creating meaningful and memorable ceremonies that celebrate who you are and what you hope to become together. With Soulmaking Ceremonies you are encouraged to reimagine the traditional wedding ceremony and create something truly unique. Choosing to create a bespoke wedding ceremony enables you to include your individual and collective dreams, inspiration and spiritual beliefs in a way that is relevant and authentic for you. Designing a wedding ceremony that is personal, participatory and held with care, love and intention is my speciality, as well as incorporating ritual and elements of the natural world to celebrate your connection with what you hold sacred. I welcome all faiths, genders and beliefs, holding an inclusive space for you and your guests to come together and share a profound experience of love that will infuse the rest of your day and future together. “Isla’s approach is thoughtful, intuitive and flexible. She worked with us to come up with the perfect order of ceremony, incorporating our ideas and suggesting rituals which would symbolise some of our goals as a couple. Our guests gave us fantastic feedback, even the most traditional saying it was the best wedding they had been to.” “She held the ceremony with such elegance and familiarity and conducted the ceremony with such gentle confidence and ease. From start to end we felt supported, loved and able to just be us. .”

Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
FRESH AND FAB We’re having a country garden wedding in the spring, and I’d love to appear fresh-faced and dewy. How do I achieve this?
FINDING THE ONE I’m nervous about my first bridal appointment. What can I expect and what should I take with me? Cathy says: It’s only natural as this is the most special dress you’ll ever wear. We recommend booking your boutique appointment at least eight to 12 months before your wedding. Dresses can take a few months to arrive and then tweak for a perfect fit, so you’ll want to allow enough time to find her. If however, your day is soon and you’re yet to find the one, there are still options in the form of fabulous dresses available off the peg. Our personal appointments last for 90 minutes, you’ll find most boutiques offer similar. Your consultant will start by getting to know you, in our case over a cuppa. You’ll then be invited to choose and try on a beautiful selection of dresses. Remember Goldilocks’ advice... she tried a few, but not too many to find something that’s just right. When you arrive for your appointment you’ll need just three things: an open mind, comfortable light-coloured underwear and the most valuable opinions only. Limit your entourage to just two or three people so you don’t become overwhelmed. To help you throughout the experience your consultant will listen to what you think, working towards exactly what you’re looking for and maybe encourage a wild card to ensure you’ve tried just the right selection before you consider saying “yes” to the dress. We’re a friendly boutique with years of experience and would love to help you on this special journey!
SWITCH IT UP I’m stuck in a rut with my make-up. What would you advise to turn heads on my big day? Jane says: Heading into spring and summer weddings you may be feeling a little uninspired, so why not switch things up, experiment and step out of your comfort zone? My first recommendation is that you get to know yourself. What do you love about your current make-up look and what would you like to change? Being confident will show in your whole demeanour, as your make-up should reflect the very best version of yourself. Don’t get overwhelmed with pictures of edited supermodels with perfect features, we’re not all made that way! Here are some more top tips... ❤ Choose colours to suit your style and season of your wedding. ❤ A new skincare routine will ensure flawless application. ❤ Use a primer. ❤ Match your concealer and foundation to best suit your tone and texture. I adore Jane Iredale or Estée Lauder for longevity. ❤ Declutter your cosmetics bag. ❤ Use your favourite lippy for the ceremony then pop a bolder hue on top later for something new. ❤ Get inspired by a new eyeshadow palette. Urban Decay is my recommendation. ❤ Change your eyeliner colour or apply your favourite shadow using a dampened angled brush for a soft smoky look. ❤ Invest in a new mascara, waterproof of course, and treat yourself to lashes. ❤ Define your brows. This frames and balances the overall look. ❤ Use a peachy- or pinky-toned blush blended on the apple of your cheeks with a hint of bronzer for warmth. Now you’re make-up ready for the big day!

Katie says: For a dewy, fresh-faced make-up look you want to use cream and liquid-based products rather than powder ones. Start by prepping the skin – my favourite primer is Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base. Then build your coverage on top using a lightweight foundation. My all-time go to is Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder. It’s buildable without being heavy and making you feel caked in make-up. Next, lightly build your cream or liquid bronzer, blush and highlighter and set with a radiant pressed powder such as the NARS Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder, a firm favourite of mine also. Finally, ensure everything stays in place with a setting spray. You can either opt for a luminous-finish product such as the Iconic London Prep-Set-Glow, or the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray. Just try to avoid anything too mattifying.

BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent natural-origin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

BRIDE’S DIARY
Let me eat cake!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
A
s some of you may know, my fiancé and I are due to get married in July 2022 – eek! We got engaged on Christmas Day 2020 and have been eagerly counting down the months waiting for the big day to arrive. We’ve booked most of our suppliers and are just finishing up the last few things, so fingers crossed the next few months go smoothly! In this issue, read about our search for the perfect entertainment and wedding cake.
JUST ONE SLICE We’ve been going back and forth since getting engaged about having a wedding cake. Dave doesn’t have a sweet tooth, while I can’t get enough of anything smothered in chocolate! After talking to our family (who were all team cake by the way) we decided to get one made up of layers of lemon and chocolate – delish! I found an amazing cake company in An Essex Wedding, which I emailed to see if they could replicate a semi-naked design I’d fallen in love with. We originally wanted a two-tier
design, but with 110 guests in the evening, we were informed that we would need a three-tier design to cater for 80 per cent of the people attending, the bigger the better I say. During my research, I came across a company that creates personalised cake toppers that were oh-so-cute I just had to have one! Made from clay, the topper will be figures of us dressed in our wedding attire accompanied by a model of our beloved cat. We’ve been told that the big day will fly by in the blink of an eye, so we’re keen to get mementos of the day that we can treasure for years to come and this cake topper will certainly be going in the wedding box. We’re so excited to see it all come together, but I’m also slightly nervous since we won’t see the finished designs until the reception. I have complete trust in our suppliers, but the control freak in me wishes I could do everything myself to ensure it’s perfect – but what do I honestly know about making cakes or moulding clay cats? So I’ll be leaving it to the professionals!
entertained all night long. Choosing songs is a lot harder than we anticipated. The band has asked us to choose 10 from their repertoire, 30 we want to appear in their DJ set and one for our first dance. Dave and I have a similar taste in music, but it’s quite overwhelming trying to find tunes that represent us as a couple that will also keep our friends and family happy. For our first dance, we wanted something a bit different, so we’ve chosen I Just Don’t Think I’ll Get Over You by Colin Hay. To try and help us narrow down the other options, we’ve asked our guests to leave song suggestions on our wedding website, which will hopefully help us give us some ideas! Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the bridesmaids’ dresses and groomsmen’s outfits.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY Dave and I couldn’t decide if we wanted to have a band or DJ for our evening entertainment and it’s such a big part of the reception we knew we had to get it right. I came across an agency in An Essex Wedding that provides hundreds of bands across the UK. We spent hours going through the acts within our budget, and we eventually decided on one we loved. As companies are getting booked up quite far in advance due to the pandemic, it turned out the band we wanted was unavailable. We felt quite disheartened, but the representative came to the rescue listing a few alternatives that were within our price range and offered a similar type of music – problem solved! We decided that a three-piece all-male band suited us perfectly; they will play three sets with a DJ in between to ensure our guests are

Here’s my moodboard to give you heaps of inspiration.
Sparklers are a lovely addition to any photo, and I can’t wait to take some pictures in the evening with them.
To tie in with our rustic theme, we want a log slice cake stand, but I’m struggling to find one big enough!
Who doesn’t love a flower arch? Our florist is going to provide a small version outside our wedding marquee.
I’ve purchased some cute bridesmaids’ robes for the girls to wear on the morning of the wedding while they have their hair and make-up done.
Generally, I’m not a massive fan of pearls, so I’ve surprised myself by choosing to wear them on the day.
I’ve finally decided on an up do with a gorgeous pearl hairclip and veil.
My bridesmaids and I are going shopping soon and are looking for floor-length A-line gowns with flowing sleeves.
Dave and I are going to pick suits in January and are leaning towards something casual and blue.
The bridesmaids are planning to wear comfortable block heels.
