THE PERFECT SETTING
Found within award-winning landscaped gardens overlooking the Mendip Hills, the scenic setting of Batch Country House provides endless photo opportunities, with its ponds, waterfalls and fountains. The venue has just become even more idyllic with the team using lockdown as an opportunity to decorate the interiors and update the path leading to the building. “We believe a wedding should be a personal affair,” says owner James. “This is why your reception will be the only one held on your date – so we can give you our undivided attention.” That means this comfortable country house will be all yours. Extended over many years, the venue features a handcrafted oak bar, cosy lounge areas and ample space for couples to celebrate with their nearest and dearest. Visit www.batchcountryhouse.co.uk

How stunning is this sunset shot at the idyllic St. Audries Park? Spanning more than 100 acres in the rolling Quantock Hills, the estate boasts an elevated position with fabulous coastal views, a deer park, lake and serene grounds. The building provides an impressive backdrop for weddings, with towers, turrets, huge stained-glass windows and its Victorianstyle Orangery. A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD
If you’re looking for a venue with something a bit different in terms of accommodation, then take a look at The Barn at Cott Farm in beautiful South Somerset. This country venue has a private campsite with luxury bell tents, which are furnished with king-sized beds that are made up for your arrival with Egyptian cotton bedding. Your guests can even pitch their own tents, campervans or caravans here too and enjoy a full English breakfast the following day. What’s more, the team have just built a shepherd’s hut toilet block for a wonderfully quirky touch. Visit www.cottfarmwedding.co.uk for more details.
Interactive entertainment
CherryTop Weddings has developed a new COVID-secure interactive wedding entertainment experience that can be enjoyed by guests attending as well as friends and relatives watching remotely. It’s also ideal for larger celebrations when restrictions lift. Everyone will receive a Love Story, which is a printed booklet personalised by the couple. It contains photographs of the newlyweds and activities chosen by them, including a quiz to find out how much their guests know about them, wedding-speech bingo, word searches, drawing challenges and much more. Couples design their own Love Story booklet using CherryTop Weddings’ content management system. There’s a range of designs and colourways to choose from that suit all wedding themes and couples choose their design for the front and back cover. The package includes a personalised pen with each booklet, a special souvenir of the day, and activities for children. There are different packages available to suit each couple’s needs starting from £150. For more information call 01872 713 344 or visit www.cherrytopweddings.com
There’s a fabulous range of mother-of-the-bride outfits at Bellissimo Occasion Wear’s new home in Curry Rivel near Langport. “When the pandemic hit and we couldn’t open, we started thinking about selling online,” owner Caroline Kenshole tells us. “In the end, we decided this wasn’t right for our customers. It’s the experience you have in the shop with us that counts: feeling the quality of the material and experimenting with styles and colours.” In October 2020, Caroline had the opportunity to open a boutique just down the road from her home – but she soon had to close again for another lockdown! “The wedding industry has taken a battering throughout the pandemic,” she says. “However, we’re so excited to be open again and helping our customers every step of the way in finding their dream outfit.” Book a stress-free appointment at www.bellissimo-occasionwear.com
AISLE BE BACK
We all have our fingers crossed that the COVID-19 roadmap continues as planned – particularly the team at Love Actually Weddings, who can’t wait to get back to organising wedding fayres. Emma and David have been hosting events in the region since 2008, and are soon to reach their 250-event milestone. “We would have been celebrating this last year,” David says. “But some things in life are worth waiting for. We’re so excited to welcome back our amazing suppliers, along with all the brides and grooms who will be itching to start planning their special day.” There are three events coming up in July… ❤ Tortworth Court 4th July ❤ Bath Racecourse 18th July ❤ The Royal Agricultural University 25th July “Whether you’re walking down the aisle to get married or strolling down the aisle of one of our wedding fayres, it really can’t come soon enough,” Emma says. “It’s been a tough time for the wedding industry, so let’s hope we can hear those champagne corks popping soon.” For more information, head to www.loveactuallyweddings.co.uk and follow the company on Facebook.

Spotlight on... BRISTOL & AROUND Venue capacities may change amid the coronavirus pandemic.
ALDWICK ESTATE 01934 864 404 | www.aldwickestate.co.uk What can you expect? Not far from bustling Bristol is this idyllic country farm venue. Panoramic views flow gently through the gardens before skimming Aldwick’s verdant fields to the River Yeo at the farm’s south boundary and Homefield Vineyard to the west. From the valley rises a patchwork of distant farms, fields and forests to the summit of the Mendip Hills. This pastoral beauty sets the scene for memorable photographs. The venue is the perfect marriage of historic and modern; all the charm of a rustic 17th-century farm is happily united with the comforts and efficiency of the 21st century.
Let’s celebrate! The venue comprises two adjacent stone barns linked by a main reception and the inviting brick-walled Cellar Bar to the rear. The barns are licensed for ceremonies with up to 150 guests. The Old Barn boasts architectural features of the bygone dairy farm, while The New Barn is a light and open space with neutral interiors waiting to be decorated to the couple’s taste. Delicious, bespoke menus are provided by Taste Buds Catering and can be designed to complement the nearlyweds’ wishes. Wine for the wedding breakfast is produced using grapes grown on-site. We love… Newlyweds receive a complimentary wedding-night stay in The Forge, a well-appointed apartment situated in the grounds.
AVON GORGE HOTEL BY HOTEL DU VIN 0117 9064 650 | www.hotelduvin.com What can you expect? The historic Avon Gorge Hotel boasts panoramic views of Clifton Suspension Bridge and the surrounding area from its iconic terrace. Just a stone’s throw away from the boutiques of Clifton Village, the hotel offers classic features alongside newly refurbished, contemporary touches in a brand new events suite located in the former spa pump rooms. There are also 78 luxurious bedrooms for when the festivities are over. Let’s celebrate! Ceremonies (up to 100 guests) and receptions (up to 300 guests) are
held in Aquam Bibe. The self-contained event space, with two adjoining rooms on the lower-ground floor, previously housed the spa pump rooms. With a sweeping marble staircase and sparkling chandeliers, it’s a photographer’s dream. The lovingly restored stained glass windows and mosaic floor make it an atmospheric spot in which to say “I do,” while the breakout area, bar and private terrace make it party-ready. The hotel and all of its rooms are available for exclusive-use. We love… Couples will have a dedicated wedding coordinator. They’re also invited to have a menu tasting and to plan their wine list with the venue’s sommelier. 15

What can you expect? Berwick Lodge offers a grand location for big-day celebrations, with its 18 acres of woodland and views across to Wales. The stunning gardens, managed by former royal gardener Robert Dunster, boast the stunning marble Aphrodite’s Dome, ornate fountains, an orchard and a summerhouse. The imposing red-brick Victorian manor is first glimpsed at the end of a tree- and lantern-lined driveway. Guests step inside to find the interior has an east-meets-west feel, with sumptuous oversized sofas, crystal chandeliers and open fires bringing a luxurious touch to this homely venue. Visitors climb the sweeping staircase to find 14 individually designed bedrooms.
LEIGH COURT 01275 373 393 | www.leighcourt.co.uk What can you expect? Shielded from the bustle of Bristol city by Leigh Woods, this honeycoloured Grade II* listed mansion was designed by architect Thomas Hopper for Bristol’s first recorded millionaire, Sir Philip John Miles. Built in 1814 from Bath stone, its graceful Palladian architecture includes grand columns and terraces. Inside, a bold Greek-revival style is showcased through original features, a stunning floating staircase and an ornate ceiling. Sweeping lawns, which lead to fields and woodland, provide plenty of space for a marquee, tipi or an outdoor reception. 16
Let’s celebrate! There are two options for ceremonies within the Mews, which is a converted stable block. Summeria (50 guests) is a beautifully light room with countryside views, while Mesopotamia (90 guests) is located on the ground floor. Furnished with pillars and large windows, it has access to a patio adjacent to the woodland. Elopement weddings for two are held in the pretty summerhouse. Receptions are held in the intimate atmosphere of the Hattusa dining room (150 guests), with its stylish architecture and twinkling chandeliers. We love… All wedding couples are treated to a complimentary menu and wine tasting evening, while some packages include anniversary stays and wedding-night accommodation.
Dominika Photography
BERWICK LODGE 0117 958 1590 | www.berwicklodge.co.uk
Let’s celebrate! All of the ground-floor rooms are licensed for ceremonies. The Great Hall (110 guests) can offer an elegant bridal entrance down the sweeping staircase, while some couples favour the grandeur of the blush-coloured Morning Room or the exquisite golden Tapestry Room. The Library and The Salon are perfect for couples who want a ceremony room that spills out on to the lawns. We love… Leigh Court can host grand affairs. Receptions can take place for up to 400 guests in one or all of the ground-floor rooms, or a marquee can be hired separately for even bigger celebrations.

MERCURE BRISTOL NORTH THE GRANGE HOTEL 01454 355 012 | www.mercurebristol.co.uk What can you expect? Located in a peaceful pocket of the north Bristol countryside, at the end of a sweeping driveway, is this delightful ivy-covered Bath-stone manor. Dating back to 1851, the hotel provides an idyllic backdrop for nuptials, thanks to its landscaped grounds and secluded secret garden. There’s even a helipad for those looking to arrive in style. After a full refurbishment, it now stylishly mixes classic and contemporary touches, with many design influences taken from the majestic cedar tree in the grounds. Inside, there’s a grand staircase and sparkling chandelier for the perfect bridal entrance.
Let’s celebrate! Couples can opt for one of two spaces in which to celebrate. The Acorn Suite is a charming setting overlooking the garden. The Park Suite oozes elegance, boasting its own bar and French doors that lead on to a private courtyard. We love… Menu tasting is offered to the happy couple, as well as overnight accommodation and a delicious breakfast. Intimate wedding packages are also available.
THE ORANGERY AT GOLDNEY HOUSE 0117 428 4000 | www.bristol.ac.uk/venues What can you expect? Nestled within romantic walled gardens, the enchanting Orangery at Goldney House is a timelessly elegant venue overlooking the city, providing an oasis of calm away from the everyday buzz of Bristol. With a Georgian folly, a shell grotto and ornate water feature, guests can enjoy the serenity of this beautiful space. The Orangery is a historic wisteria-clad building with original stone floors, high ceilings and wonderfully large windows that let in an abundance of light. It benefits from French-style doors that can be opened up on a warm day to let the outside in. There’s also an exclusive area for the newlyweds to take a breath and freshen up during the day.
Let’s celebrate! Ceremonies are held in several spaces, from the intimate Rotunda (14 guests), to the elegant Georgian Drawing Room and Wills Reception Room (80 guests). Most receptions take pace in The Orangery (110 day guests and 150 evening guests), but there are also smaller settings for groups of between 12 and 50 people. We love… The historical grotto, which is encrusted in shells and quartz, can be hired during the drinks reception as something different for guests to enjoy. The venue is also offering a 21% discount on venue hire for Autumn 2021. 19

REAL WEDDINGS
J
ackie and Dan met at their local tennis club, but there was more than one love on the cards. “We embarked on a mixeddoubles losing streak, which we eventually broke,” Jackie says. “Dan asked me out at the gates of the club after we played together a few times.” They both had similar interests and a mutual attraction, so she agreed. Fast forward into their relationship, and Dan was dreaming up the perfect way to pop the question. “We were on a trip to Barcelona and he proposed at night on the beach – I had no idea it was coming,” Jackie tells us. “He bought the ring a few months earlier, just before Valentine’s Day, and was surprised when the jeweller asked if he was planning a Valentine’s proposal!” The pair soon set the date for 7th September, 2019, and they decided to host celebrations at the bride’s family home in Woollard, Somerset. We caught up with Jackie to find out how they did it…
PUTTING THEIR STAMP ON The venue was where Jackie grew up, and it held a lot of special memories. “It has lots of space and idyllic views,” Jackie says. “As it wasn’t a traditional venue, we had the freedom to do what we pleased and add touches to make the day exactly what we wanted.” In keeping with the setting, they chose a rural, outdoorsy theme, and used as many local companies as possible to bring it to life. The pair opted for a relaxed feel, with woodland and meadow florals from Wild About Flowers. “We filled milk churns, wooden crates and an assortment of vases for the tables,” Jackie says. “The centrepieces sat on wooden slices made from trees that had fallen in the garden, alongside candles and flowers.” Instead of a traditional cake, the couple chose a cheese stack, with the cheese selection and design left in the capable hands of their caterer, The Full Spoon. “We didn’t see the design in advance, 29

REAL WEDDINGS which meant we got a surprise on the day,” Jackie says. There was a personal touch to the table plan, with Polaroid pictures of all the guests with the couple’s favourite tennis players as table names – reflecting how they met. Place settings and favours were doubled up, and the couple’s nearest and dearest were treated to homemade sloe gin, using sloes picked from the fields by the house. To fit the rustic vibe, hay bales provided by Stowey Farm were used for seating, while the confetti was made from rose petals that were handpicked and dried from the garden. As well as providing the marquee, Archers Marquees also organised the lighting, which lit up the river beautifully in the evening.
AISLE STYLE Jackie wore Kelsey by Maggie Sottero, which she first saw in the window of Krystle Brides in Bath when she went for an appointment. “The staff in the boutique were so helpful and never made you feel rushed,” Jackie says. “I loved the train and the detail on the back of the dress. It was comfortable and sparkly, but not too formal given the rustic setting of our wedding.” She teamed the gown with a veil and a pair of earrings, which were a gift from one of her bridesmaids. Dan’s tailor-made Moss Bros suit was in a royal blue with his choice of East Asian-inspired lining and gold stitching on the cuffs. The groomsmen wore a similar blue suit, while the bride’s brother, who lives in Scotland, wore a kilt made from his university tartan. The bridesmaids looked elegant in the Salma dress by Ghost, in a luxurious emerald green.
TIME TO CELEBRATE To set the scene and provide a wonderful atmosphere, a string quartet performed while the guests arrived, during the ceremony and for the reception; the lead violinist was Jackie’s old music teacher. After a delicious meal from The Full Spoon, the guests all gathered by the river for a duck race, which saw some of the guests wading in the water to help! “In the evening, the party got started with a live ceilidh band,” Jackie says. “This was followed by our own playlist of dancefloor-fillers.”
MAKING MEMORIES While Jackie was excited on the morning of the big day, Dan was feeling nervous about his speech. “He was so relieved when it was over,” Jackie smiles. “He could then relax and enjoy the rest of the wedding.” The day was full of glorious sunshine. “We had a contingency plan to relocate everything inside the marquee in the event of rain,” Jackie says. “Luckily, the weather was perfect!” The pair loved having their photos taken in the late afternoon in a local tannery. Jackie remembers, “It meant walking across a field, through the woods and crossing a river to reach the location! I had to take my shoes off while Dan held up my train.”
Jackie’s words of wedded wisdom: “Make sure you’re comfortable with the suppliers you choose. This allows you to trust them, leaving you to relax and enjoy the day.”

Despite their plans changing dramatically because of the pandemic, Lynsay and Rhys’ intimate wedding at the Roman Baths was truly magical Images courtesy of Daniel Cooper Photography

ynsay and Rhys met through eHarmony, and had their first date in Monmouth, where Lynsay was doing some vet locum work before moving to Dorset. “We had our second date within three days,” Lynsay tells us. “Our third was in Dorset. I was instantly attracted to Rhys and his passion for life, while he loved my caring nature – and my dog, Roxy!” Rhys decided he would pop the question on Dydd Santes Dwynwen (Welsh Valentine’s Day). “He asked my parents for their blessing,” Lynsay says. “They were on holiday in New Zealand at the time, and had spent the day predicting what he would ask after he arranged a video call with them!” Arriving home after a work course, Rhys took Lynsay totally by surprise when she found red roses, pink champagne and ten cards, each stating something he loved about her. “Next thing, he was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring,” she smiles. The pair originally planned their wedding for May 2020, but the pandemic put paid to that. Instead, their intimate wedding was held at the Roman Baths on 13th December, 2020. Lynsay fills us in on the details… 35

Made foreach other For Chris and Natasha, Barley Wood was the perfect rural setting for their special day Images courtesy of Howell Jones Photography
W
e adore this beautifully personal wedding at Barley Wood in idyllic North Somerset, so we had to find out more about the couple behind it. Chris and Natasha met while they were at sixth form college. Romance blossomed, and a few years later Chris decided to pop the question while the pair were exploring one of their favourite beauty spots in the Quantock Hills. They got to work planning their dream day, starting with finding the perfect venue. Barley Wood was the ideal rural setting near Bristol, so the happy couple set the date here for 3rd August, 2019. Natasha continues the story… 41
It was the beautiful scenery at Barley Wood that made us sure it was the perfect place for us.
We ordered cut flowers that my bridesmaids and family helped put in pots and vases all around the venue. We reused the bridesmaids’ bouquets for table decorations, alongside frames containing flowers that I’d pressed.
42
Each table was named after a drink that we like, and we put the tipple in the middle. We had a quiz on each table and the winner won the drink! It was a great ice-breaker for those who didn’t know each other.
REAL WEDDINGS
I made the place settings by hand with the help of some friends. We also gave a succulent or cactus to each guest as a favour.
We were lucky enough to have our cake made by a friend; it was a delicious lemon and elderflower creation. I wore a Monsoon dress, which I had altered to fit me perfectly.
We added our own character to the setting by hanging bunting and vines. We also rocked up in a VW Campervan!
We found some great suits in TM Lewin for Chris and the groomsmen. They looked brilliant next to my bridesmaids in sage green sequin gowns.
43
The 45s, a live band from Bristol, were a huge hit for the evening party. We also hired a photo booth, which our guests loved.
On the day, we both felt nervous but excited at the same time.

Style and substance Venue styling for the new normal
W
e’ve been on a rollercoaster of restrictions, distancing and guidelines over the last year, with couples and the wedding industry constantly adapting to new regulations. We wanted to explore how weddings have changed in this time and how you can style three different new normal celebrations, whether you’re going small, taking it outside or throwing the ultimate party to celebrate being reunited with loved ones. Thanks to our talented local experts for their advice and tips…
Micro-weddings.
“An intimate wedding should feel unique to you and contain personal touches. How about personalised napkins, which incorporate your wedding hashtag or your favourite quote? Sit together with the people who mean the most to you at a family-style wedding breakfast. Later, get cosy on sofas with blankets and your favourite tipple.” – Alison Hieron, Creative Collections
www.rusticrentals.co.uk | https://mariamadison.co.uk
“Micro-weddings can be magical events, with smaller guest numbers creating an intimate atmosphere. We’re finding that couples are keen to use their full budget to incorporate personal touches and luxury styling options. While you may not have been able to opt for glass charger plates and bespoke stationery for 100 people, it might well be achievable for 30. Consider personal elements, such as photographs or sayings that have significance to you both. Choose flowers or themes that represent your story as a couple. A sweetheart table can be a wonderful touch, set just for the newlyweds, it allows a moment of quiet intimacy with your partner, something which is often lost in the hubbub of a large reception.” – Holly Allman-Lopez, Ambience Venue Styling Bath
www.rusticrentals.co.uk | https://gemhicksphotography.com
www.ambiencevenuestyling.com | https://janebeadnellphotography.co.uk
So many couples have made the most of the situation and planned a smaller celebration. Will these intimate weddings stick around? And if so, how can you style them?
www.rusticrentals.co.uk | https://mariamadison.co.uk
“Micro-weddings need special decor to create the right atmosphere – pieces that focus attention on the tables rather than the whole environment. We’ve developed stands that allow single chandeliers to hang over the dining table without the need for overhead fixings. These can be used inside or outside and provide magical intimacy for small tables; the twinkling crystals shine down like starlight.” – Simon Gerrard, Crescent Moon Events

VENUE STYLING
“This style of wedding gives you the ability to define what the day means to you and focus only on the things that represent your love. There are so many ways to do this: catering from your favourite restaurant, a luxury picnic, a ceremony in the woods or even on top of a mountain. Why not take inspiration from your favourite places you’ve been together? For example, you could have a Moroccan-themed celebration with low tables, rattan, peacock chairs, tagines to serve food and belly dancers for entertainment.” – Lynne Panes, Rustic Rentals 47
“With al fresco weddings you normally have more space to take your wedding up to the next level. You can bring in greenery and blooms to complement the setting; use large displays to dress tired spaces and use tea light baubles or lanterns in darker areas. Why not create an outdoor lounge area with fur throws, velour couches and rugs to make the space pop? Have parasols ready if it gets sunny, and rolled blankets to keep the chill off at night – these can also be given as keepsakes. When it comes to the ceremony, opt for a romantic altar with densely decorated floral arches and drapes; not only will it look amazing but it will smell heavenly.” – Alison Hieron, Creative Collections
“Start by considering three main elements: texture, stationery and lighting. Incorporating soft, elegant textures instantly gives a luxurious vibe. Think flowing chair drapes, pooled table runners, metallic accents and sparkling glass. Your on-the-day stationery plays a big part in setting the tone. Layering place settings with personalised menu cards and place names gives a fine-dining feel. Finally, consider lighting; large clusters of candlelight are effortlessly romantic. Statement pieces such as outdoor chandeliers, fairylights or festoon lights bring drama. Combine all three elements and your day will radiate rustic-luxe.” – Holly Allman-Lopez, Ambience Venue Styling Bath 48
www.rusticrentals.co.uk | https://mariamadison.co.uk
www.ambiencevenuestyling.com | https://janebeadnellphotography.co.uk
“For me, this is all about keeping it simple with natural materials and colours. Luxury tables start with coloured tablecloths rather than white, teamed with metallic cutlery in gold or copper and coloured or sparkling cut glassware to elevate the look. Table decor is all about layering runners, foliage, florals and candlelight (or LED lights if necessary). In the ceremony area, I would add florals, greenery and candlelight to any natural structures such as a tree or pergola, or create a backdrop with an arch or moon gate. We have even created a fireplace in the woods!” – Lynne Panes, Rustic Rentals
www.rusticrentals.co.uk | www.jenniferjanephotography.co.uk
“Everyone loves the opulence of a crystal chandelier. We have developed outdoor versions to take the wonder of the ballroom out into the garden, woods or grounds of any venue. We can hang dozens of smaller chandeliers in the branches of a tree, or create a fairytale walkway into the woods. A pre-pandemic trend was to recreate the atmosphere of hanging gardens inside a venue. Now, our outdoor chandeliers are bringing the dancefloor outside.” – Simon Gerrard, Crescent Moon Events

Go big or go home!
“A big celebration is all about interaction, and experiences could include a super-cool cocktail service, casino tables, live musicians or a comedian. One of the top styling trends for next season is mood lighting. When the sun sets, the lights come on to set the scene for the evening. We also love neon signs hung from frames with florals, balloons and disco balls. Although it’s great to take inspiration from trends, make sure you do things how you want in your own style.” – Alison Hieron, Creative Collections www.creativecollections.uk | www.bradwakefield.com
“We’re seeing a trend for big celebrations in late 2021 and 2022 – and we can understand why! After a year of lockdowns and restrictions, couples are keen to get everyone together and guest lists are growing. Couples are opting for stylish outdoor events with informal catering options such as barbecues and street-food trucks. When it comes to decor, backdrops are going to be big news. From floral moon gates to draped arches and witty neon signs, having a showstopping backdrop for your I dos is very on trend. Why not reuse it in your reception space as a fun photo backdrop or to frame your cake table?” – Holly AllmanLopez, Ambience Venue Styling Bath
“For an opulent celebration, try matching your food to your colour scheme to create a flow throughout the party. For example, if your palette is rose gold, serve pink champagne to coordinate. The sky is the limit when it comes to your styling. You could even keep one area of your venue closed off and reveal it as a secret after-party space when the time is right. Silent discos are a great option for having a big party in a venue where there are sound restrictions after a certain time.” – Lynne Panes, Rustic Rentals
www.rusticrentals.co.uk | https://mariamadison.co.uk
“We’re seeing more emphasis from our couples on having fun with their guests, rather than the formalities of the day. We’ve been asked to design Studio 54-themed days, festival weddings and marquees with their own nightclubs. All the friends and parties that we’ve missed are inspiring the fun that we will have when we’re finally back together.” – Simon Gerrard, Crescent Moon Events

BRIDAL BOUTIQUES
Hannah Faulder meets the people behind the regions’ best bridal boutiques
M
any moons ago, I spent four glorious years working in a bridal boutique. I had an absolute ball, but when it came to picking my own wedding dress years later I thought it might tarnish the experience slightly – knowing how it all works behind the scenes – but I was so wrong! I rounded up the troops (my mum and sister) and we headed out into the big white world of wedding dress shopping. There were bubbles, there were nibbles, but best of all there were amazingly talented, patient and creative people who were ready to answer my every question and concern. Believe me, I wanted to know everything.
My biggest piece of advice to those who are embarking on their journey to find the one is this: try styles on you don’t think you’ll like. Also, listen to the advice of your consultant; they’ll probably have an idea of what will suit you as soon as you walk through the door. I certainly didn’t end up with the flowing long-sleeved Stevie Nicks-style number that I thought I would. Yep – I wore a meringue! We’re lucky enough to have some fantastic boutiques in our region, with styles, price ranges and designers for every type of bride. We’re going to introduce you to just some of them… 53
MEET SUSANNE CLARK OF BRIDAL RELOVED STREET Describe your boutique and service in five words… Fun, friendly, welcoming and affordable. What designers do you stock? We stock dresses from designers such as Ronald Joyce, Justin Alexander, Ian Stuart, Maggie Sottero, Terry Fox, Vera Wang, San Patrick and many more. We also stock Terra Bridal, which is a plus-size brand exclusive to Bridal Reloved. How did you come to launch your business? I started selling pre-loved dresses to raise money for IVF. I fell in love with helping brides find the one at pocket-friendly prices. I also loved that rehoming dresses was so much better for the environment, so I decided to buy into the Bridal Reloved brand. This was a massive change from my 22-year service in the Armed Forces, and I love every minute of it! Why should brides choose to get their gown from a local boutique? I truly believe in shopping local where possible. Not only does it help our communities thrive, but it also helps small family business to pay the bills, rather than paying the overheads of big chains. As a boutique specialising in preloved and sample dresses, we’re a more eco-friendly option – giving another lease of life to these beautiful dresses. Give us your top dress-shopping tip… Arrive open-minded and try on various styles to see what looks and feels best. You might just be surprised! Visit www.bridalreloved.co.uk
Jan’s favourite dress is style 44249 by Sincerity Bridal.
MEET JAN WRIGHT OF BRIDE AT HOME BOUTIQUE Describe your boutique and service in five words… Welcoming, professional, passionate, experienced, attentive. What designers do you stock? Sincerity Bridal, Ronald Joyce, White One, La Sposa and Eternity Bridal. How did you come to launch your business? When I was young, I had no idea that my pen and paper were a canvas for what my future would hold. I followed my heart and took a fashion design and pattern-cutting course. This gave me the courage to start my own business from the extension of my home, and I later moved to the high street. I want to offer brides the most beautiful dresses and leave a sparkle in them that will last a lifetime. Why should brides choose to get their gown from a local boutique? Local boutiques offer brides a more personal service that’s tailored to their needs. It also means professional consultants are never far away to offer advice. The main draw of a local boutique, as opposed to buying online, is getting to try on the dresses and having that moment when you know it’s the perfect gown.
Susanne’s favourite dress is this A-line Sassi Holford dress with a gorgeous structured neckline. 54
What’s your top tip for brides looking for their dream dress? Trust your instinct and be true to what you love; it’s your day and your dress so your feelings come first. Also, enjoy the process. Choosing your wedding gown will give you memories to treasure for life, so don’t get too lost in the search and let your heart guide you. Visit www.brideathome.co.uk

MEET KRYSTLE HERBERT-WORGAN OF KRYSTLE BRIDES Describe your boutique and service in five words… Relaxed, cosy, popular, stylish, award-winning. What designers do you stock? Enzoani, Blue by Enzoani, Maggie Sottero, Ellis Bridals, Mia Mia by Alan Hannah, Ronald Joyce and Victoria Jane by Ronald Joyce. How did you come to launch your business? I was already working as a bridal stylist when an opportunity came up to open my own boutique. After lots of consideration and advice from loved ones, I launched the business in 2011 and have never looked back! Krystle Brides is a very special place to me and I’m so proud of how we have evolved. Why should brides choose to get their gown from a local boutique? We have the choice of beautiful hand-picked designer gowns and an onsite seamstress. Shopping local will enable you to build a relationship with your supplier and feel cared for – support is always available if you need it. What’s your top tip for brides looking for their dream dress? Shop with just a few of your nearest and dearest; too many opinions can be confusing. Don’t be afraid to offend your consultant if you don’t like something – honesty will let you get the most out of the experience and help you find the one. Visit www.krystlebrides.co.uk Krystle’s favourite dress: Natsuko by Enzoani.
BRIDAL BOUTIQUES MEET SARAH HACKETT OF ROOKERY BRIDAL Describe your boutique and service in five words… Gorgeous gowns, fantastic customer service! What designers do you stock? Justin Alexander, Essense of Australia, Paloma Blanca, Randy Fenoli, Romantica of Devon – Silhouette, Rosa Clara – Adriana Alier. How did you come to launch your business? Rookery Bridal was launched nearly 20 years ago. However, I purchased it in 2019. I already owned one boutique but couldn’t resist the temptation to expand and share my love of bridal! Taking forward my goals for offering exceptional customer service and quality products, I have since set about improving the boutique so it can accommodate all brides and budgets. Why should brides choose to get their gown from a local boutique? I always shop local where I can, and I believe we should all try to support small businesses as opposed to large corporations. Most independently owned boutiques need the support of their community in order to thrive, and this is the same for us. We want to be an asset to our community. What’s your top tip for brides looking for their dream dress? Don’t worry about your figure – you are loved for who you are! Also, try not to visit too many shops; it can become overwhelming. Visit www.rookerybridal.co.uk Sarah’s favourite dress: Aidan by Justin Alexander.

An English
REGIONAL SHOOT
This styled shoot is dedicated to those couples who want a deeply intimate and luxurious celebration

S
tylist and planner Chloe Kennedy of Kennedy Events & Weddings dreamed up this gorgeous shoot to showcase just how luxurious an elopement can be. “It’s a celebration of the English countryside, with touches of rambling rose and lavender throughout,” Chloe explains. “In these times when travel is limited, there are also a few subtle nods to the Mediterranean.” The shoot takes us on a journey, starting with the arrival at Priston Mill, where the couple are welcomed by a lavender champagne cocktail in vintage Italian glasses. Chloe wanted the whole feel to be relaxed yet elegant. This is seen through the pared-back gown and beauty look of the bride, through to the wonderfully wild florals, softly draped natural fabrics, exquisite table styling and hand-written stationery. “The cake was small but beautifully formed by Angel’s Kitchen,” Chloe says. “While serving coffee and cake on the terrace, taking shade from the afternoon sun, our couple were able to just be together. To draw things to a close, I created a rustic-style cheese and port table – a flavoursome way to end a beautiful day.”

SILKY SMOOTH
I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my super-cute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

Q&A We ask the regions’ top experts for their tips on summer beauty looks
Q Any tips for keeping skin looking its best in the warmer months? Hydration is key for great skin – so fill up your water bottle regularly! You could also treat yourself to a new skincare routine in the lead-up to your day. I recommend Wild As The Wind (www.wilddigital.co.uk) for natural skincare and essential oils. Q How can you achieve a summer bridal beauty look? ❤ If you have oily skin, skip the moisturiser and use a matte primer. Foundation should look like your skin, so choose a lightweight liquid or tinted moisturiser alongside a liquid tinted concealer.

SUMMER LOVIN’
Q What should brides consider with a summery make-up look? Summer is a magical time to get married, but it can also mean heat and sweat, which is a nightmare for your make-up! You’ll want your look to stay fresh from the first look to the last dance, so the summer bride’s make-up mantra has to be “less is more.”
❤ Prime the eyes and choose a powder eyeshadow palette – Urban Decay products are my favourite! Choose neutral, subtle tones, preferably in matte textures, and apply waterproof mascara, with gel or liquid liners. ❤ Opt for a matte highlighter, or one that is not too luminous, as the heat will make your face look extra shiny if it’s overdone. Apply a matte powder just once – never reapply! ❤ Choose a lipstick shade that’s in keeping with your make-up, style and theme – one that enhances your natural beauty. ❤ Set everything with a setting spray, such as Urban Decay All Nighter. Finally, carry blotting sheets in your kit to lift away any oil for a shine-free finish without disturbing your make-up. Jane Dare | Eye Do Makeup | www.eyedomakeup.co.uk
HEATING UP
https://steveleephotoworks.com
Q What’s your favourite summery beauty look? For the summer months, I love using peaches and pink tones on the lips and cheeks. This gives fresh, glowing skin with a pop of colour.
76
Q Any tips for keeping skin looking its best in the warmer months? SPF40 is my best friend all year round, but especially in the summer when we are more exposed to the sun. Using cream products will help create a natural look. I wear a tinted moisturiser instead of foundation, as it has lighter coverage but still evens out the skin tone. Q What’s your favourite product for summer weddings? This is hard as every client is different. However, Hollywood Flawless Filter by Charlotte Tilbury is such a beautiful product that can be used in many ways, from a primer to a highlighter. You can also mix it into your foundation to give a beautifully natural glow to the skin. Setting spray is also a great product for summer; it hydrates the skin and helps make-up to stay in place. WELLNESS
The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY
We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com
#FRESHSTART Bored with hot water and lemon in the morning? Then maybe it’s time for a Fresh Start with Pukka’s newest caffeine-free organic tea. Expertly blended with sustainablysourced organic herbs, delicious zesty organic lemon and warming aromatic fennel seeds, it gently awakens your body and mind to a new day helping you feel your brightest self. What’s more, this stimulating yet soothing blend helps to strengthen the digestive system to support optimum metabolism. Priced at £2.99 for 20 sachets, it’s available at https://uk.pukkaherbs.com, and from health food stores and supermarkets across the land.
#FindYourInnerCalm Designed to accompany ESPA’s sensorial collection of Signature Blends, the Aromatic Essential Oil Diffuser, £85, harnesses the harmonising power of aromatherapy to nurture your wellbeing. Whether you want to wind down and relax, improve your focus, lift your spirits or lull yourself to sleep, the diffuser’s ultrasonic vibrations humidify the atmosphere and disperse your choice of precious natural essential oils by releasing the perfect amount of fragrant vapour into your home. Find it at www.espaskincare.com
#ThePowerOfSleep Given the trials of the last year, looking after ourselves at home has never been more important, so to help with this endeavour, The Somerset Toiletry Company has created a collection of gifts to promote self-care and wellness and we’re all about its Sleepeze range. After all, the importance of sleep when it comes to ultimate wellbeing can never be underestimated, it’s crucial for body and mind. The Sleepeze Calming Gift Set, £9.95, includes a silky eye mask, pillow mist, and essential oil-based rollerball. Then there’s the Calming Sleep Stones, £11.95 – 200g of volcanic rock infused with essential oils to enhance your night-time routine. Finally, in the collection is the Calming Bath Salts, £4.95, perfect for washing away that build up of daily stress before bed. Treat yourself at www.thesomersettoiletryco.co.uk
#SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com 77
MAKING

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks
78
INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.
A
ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs eventready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.
I would say, start with the neckline of your desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.
If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their big-day, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.
What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.
Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.
How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.
What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.
What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.
How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?
For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk
What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 79

PERFECTLY PERSONAL
Q: We’ve booked a large venue, but now we’re having a small wedding in June under restrictions. How can we make it feel more intimate? The rooms in our historic venues range from intimate to grand, with spaces ideal for any occasion. For example, the Roman Baths is perfect for an elopement or a grand celebration with 150 guests. It’s suitability is all down to how you use the space. Holding a smaller wedding in a large venue has become the norm over the past 12 months. Here are some ideas to make the setting more intimate:
www.athinglikethatphotography.com)
HOT TOPIC ❤ Make use of the room’s features. For example, our venues have some beautiful crystal chandeliers, which make fantastic focal points for a ceremony or seated reception. ❤ Have all your guests on one table in the centre of the room to create an opulent dinner party vibe. ❤ Reduce the number of guests per table to increase table numbers. ❤ Use soft foliage to create a sense of enclosure. ❤ Divide the area into zones for dining, dancing and the bar. You can even hire in lounge furniture to create an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Lizzie Marshall | Bath’s Historic Venues www.bathvenues.co.uk/weddings

WED-FEST
Q: We’re having a festival-style tipi wedding. What catering would suit this? We’d suggest something simple, tasty and easy to eat – all served from a food stall. Festival-style service allows for more relaxed timings; the stand can be open for a couple of hours, with guests collecting their meal at their leisure. Plus, with no need to clear away plates, it saves you precious time so you can move on to the next part of your day. We’d recommend a couple of stalls: one for the main course and one for dessert, such as an ice cream bicycle. Our two catering options, Thali and Pieminister, both complement this style of wedding very well. The pies are served in eco-friendly boxes with mash, minted mushy peas and gravy. Alternatively, Thali dishes have a choice of curry, rice and toppings. Guests just need to collect their food and wooden cutlery, then dig in! It’s super-satisfying, eco- and budget-friendly and stress-free!

ASK THE EXPERTS
THROUGH THE LENS
Q: My partner and I don’t like having our photo taken. How can we relax on the day? We hear this so often – it’s pretty much the norm! A big part of our job is to keep things as relaxed and fun as possible, so we can capture authentic moments. Here are our top tips for camera-shy couples: ❤ Choose a photographer whose style and personality you like. Ring them and have a good chat, or even better, meet for a coffee before booking. How do you feel when you spend time with them? Did you have fun and did they understand you? ❤ Have an engagement shoot. We definitely recommend this to nervous couples – it’s a great way to get to know your photographer, learn about how they work and create some gorgeous non-wedding images. ❤ Remember to be yourself! We love to see you in the moment, having fun and just being together. There will only be a few times during the day that we will ask you to look at the camera. ❤ Plan well, but then relax and let go! We love having a detailed plan and shoot list to work from. This means that on the day we can worry about organising groups and managing timings – not you! ❤ Trust your suppliers. You booked them for a reason, so just relax and enjoy the moment.
MUM’S THE WORD
Jo Hansford | Jo Hansford Photography | www.johansfordphotography.com
SMELL THE ROSES
Q: My mum is pretty trendy, but she has no idea what to wear to my wedding – help! So many of us mums don’t know what to wear to our children’s wedding, or even where to shop! There is so much fun to be had when looking for a wedding outfit. We love experimenting with our customers – trying different styles and colours and eliminating the ones that don’t work. We all have a comfort zone, and many of us keep wearing the same styles. However, as we get older our shapes change and sometimes we need to adapt accordingly. In the boutique, we’ll encourage you to try things that you’ve never dreamed of wearing – and hopefully you’ll be pleasantly surprised! Once you have the outfit, we will help you choose a small fascinator or larger hatinator – and for some mums it just has to be a hat. You also want to be comfortable, so we offer elegant shoes in a range of heel heights, as well finishing off the look with the perfect bag.
Q: After not seeing our loved ones for so long, we want to give something special for our favours. What do you suggest? There are high expectations for weddings this year and couples want to treat their loved ones to something special. Everyone will be excited for a good knees up, and I don’t think champagne-shaped bubble mixture will cut it now! Our gorgeous sizzlers make great wedding favours. The little pots of fragrant happiness can be used over and over by your guests at home. They’re ideal for winding down after your big day, while remembering everything that was so special about it. Your wedding will be exceptional, so don’t settle for less when it comes to gifts for your family and friends!

Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
L
ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup
plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and overbudgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.
THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers and budget, we began the exciting part – looking 96
at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY
Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.
Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.
Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.
Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.
We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.
Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!
This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 97
