elcome to our February/March issue and congratulations to those of you who recently got engaged; we can’t wait to help you plan your special day! Planning your wedding can feel overwhelming, especially at the beginning, but try not to panic. Weddings aren’t one-size-fits-all, so make the day about you, your interests and your love story. For example, if you love Harry Potter, why not incorporate it into your day? After all, it’s your wedding! Having trouble getting started? I found the best thing to do when I got engaged was to make a list of everything that I’d like to include in my day. From the big things like the venue and photographer down to the smaller details such as the cake topper and jewellery. The list might be a few sentences, or five pages long(!); both are absolutely fine. The list is there so you can find which items are important to you and to help you to focus on one thing at a time. My number one piece of advice would be to focus on your venue first, as this will dictate the day and time that you’re getting married. Due to the knock-on effects of the pandemic, many venues are still getting booked years in advance, so get your dream space locked in as soon as possible and then you can start thinking about your other suppliers. If you’re not sure what type of venue you want for your big day, check out our venue features for heaps of inspiration.

Hoping to win the ‘Dog Friendly Business’, ‘Hotel Wedding Venue’ and ‘Resilience and Innovation’ categories, head of weddings Joanne Denton has also been nominated for the ‘Unsung Hero’ award. This is a very special category and we hope each of the finalists are proud to have their name associated with the award, which celebrates the finalists’ achievements and their contributions to the industry. A MOMENT IN TIME
Fish 2 Photography is run by the talented Christina Davies. Based in Preston, she travels all over the North West, capturing stunning weddings. “I started taking photos when I was really young on my dad’s camera and it has always interested me,” shares Christina. “After studying at college and university, I decided to try and explore the TV world and ended up working at the BBC and a few other random jobs, but I missed taking photos. I decided in June 2008 to quit my job and start Fish 2 Photography and I’m so glad I did. I really love photographing weddings; no couple is the same and no wedding is the same and I enjoy capturing personalities and special moments. My style is quite relaxed and natural; I want to capture the day as it happens – every moment, every laugh, or even the tears. I really want couples to feel comfortable, even though having your photo taken isn’t an everyday thing for most people, so I try to make your couple photos as relaxed as possible, picking up on how you naturally interact with each other and reflecting that in the photos.” Christina offers six different packages, covering everything from micro-two-hour weddings to full-day coverage. Exclusively for Your North West Wedding, Fish 2 Photography is offering our readers 10 percent off any packages when you email Christina at info@fish2.co.uk and mention the magazine. The offer ends on 15th April 2024. To find out more about Fish 2 Photography, visit www.fish2.co.uk

THE LAKE DISTRICT
STORRS HALL, LA23 3LG
01539 447 111 | www.storrshall.com Storrs Hall is a Grade II*-listed Georgian mansion house set on the shoreline of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. The hall was built in the 1790s by Sir John Legard, then more than doubled in size with a Victorian extension when it was turned into a hotel in 1892. There are 36 bedrooms, 29 of which retain their original architecture, so every room is different. The original Boathouse is a luxuriously private and indulgent getaway. The open-plan suite in the lakeland stone building is bordered by a large terrace edging the lake and includes a private hot tub and firepit to enhance the outdoor vibe and complement the facilities inside. These are complemented by the six contemporary Lakeside Suites which sit in woodland between the Boathouse and main house, facing west over the lake. Each has a private terrace with its own Japanese-style cedar hot tub. Slide the glass walls back to maximise the back-to-nature feel of these nurturing spaces. Two of these suites are suitable for people
with limited mobility. These spaces are wrapped in 17 acres of private grounds and have a dual-aspect lake frontage looking along the greater length of Windermere. Celebrate in style The wedding team at Storrs Hall will be able to help you plan the wedding of your dreams, from your ceremony to the big reception. You can host your service in a choice of settings with up to 80 guests, including a drinks reception with canapés and a three-course wedding breakfast followed by tea, coffee and petit fours. We love... When tying the knot here, you will receive a complimentary menu tasting, a toastmaster service, a drinks package, wedding chairs and table linens, menus and place cards, an evening reception for up to 110 guests and a dedicated wedding coordinator.
LANGDALE CHASE HOTEL, LA23 1LW 01539 432 201 | www.langdalechase.co.uk Standing on the shores of Lake Windermere, the Langdale Chase Hotel has reopened its doors following a careful 12-month restoration. The hotel’s new look adds a contemporary touch with calming colours to its 30 bedrooms while being sympathetic to the building’s history, which dates back to 1890. Langdale Chase Hotel combines warm service with plenty to do, offering a charming and homely lakeside getaway. Guests can choose to do as much as they wish or kick back and fine-tune the art of doing absolutely nothing at the hotel’s private waterside location. Lovers of the outdoors can enjoy 4x4 off-road driving and clay pigeon shooting, as well as lakeside activities including paddleboarding, wild swimming, boating and kayaking. The hotel’s kitchen will also make up picnic baskets for guests to enjoy while hiking popular walking routes. Those who prefer to stay indoors and relax will enjoy wine tastings led by certified sommelier Julien Hennebelle or a screening in the hotel’s cinema room, which shows three classic films per day alongside complementary ice cream and is also bookable for private screenings. Cosy activity
seekers can snuggle up by one of the four original fireplaces in the new reading room or various lounges. Celebrate in style Langdale Chase Hotel is a beautiful venue, perfect for intimate celebrations. The Sitting Room can seat 10–12 people in the heart of the main house, with a real fire and bay window looking down the lake. Alternatively, The Cellar is an atmospheric setting surrounded by the hotel’s wine collection with room for six to eight guests. The Dining Room is slightly larger and can accommodate 18 loved ones. We love... Each room at the Langdale Chase Hotel is decorated to accentuate the building’s original features. The hotel’s Windermere and Lakehouse Rooms offer a great place to relax with comfortable interiors, and there are five dog-friendly rooms available for guests staying with a four-legged friend. 15

THE FOREST SIDE, LA22 9RN
01539 435 250 | www.theforestside.com
every bathroom has exactly the same high-quality fixtures and fittings.
Built using typical Lake District slate and stone, The Forest Side is a Victorian mansion that dates back to 1853. The Forest Side was originally built on the site of an earlier farm in the magical Lake District for notable Manchester solicitor Stephen Heelis as a statement of position and wealth. He didn’t stint on the gardens, planting extensive pleasure gardens with rhododendrons as the dominant planting scheme, the very height of fashion, with rare and exotic specimens brought back to these shores from China and the Himalayas by some of the great Victorian plant hunters. There are a number of other original Victorian features dotted about in the grounds, including an old fernery based around a small pool fed by a mountain stream, which over time will be restored to its former glory. am and Iain met through a mutual friend and instantly hit it off. “We really enjoyed each other’s company and shared a similar sense of humour,” says Sam. “It felt so easy and natural talking to one another.” Iain proposed during a trip to Paris. “When we arrived, we had a few drinks before heading back to our room,” shares the bride. “We decided to go out to the balcony and enjoy the view. I turned around and Iain was down on one knee. It was a complete shock, as we have always said we wouldn’t get married as it isn’t really our thing.” Read on to see some of Sam’s favourite moments from their big day... 27
A family friend had told us about the café at Samlesbury Hall and how beautiful it was, so we decided to go see what it was like. It was everything that we wanted. Being big walkers, we are always attracted to the woodland style and the venue’s size and private garden were just perfect for us. When we contacted them about having a small wedding there, they actually had another wedding happening in the main hall. They wouldn’t normally arrange another event, but when we explained our situation, the staff were so understanding and supportive, making sure everything went perfectly.
My mother had recently been diagnosed with stage three-four pancreatic cancer, so once we got back from Paris, we made the decision to get married quick and have a small ceremony as we wanted my mother to be there.
For our centrepieces, we chose eucalyptus and candles. I added white petals, but we didn’t really want to put too much on the tables as the venue was beautiful enough!
My lovely cook at work made a cake for us; sadly, it didn’t travel well, so she had to quickly repair and change it, but it still tasted delicious! 28
Our flowers were green and white, with a mix of wild blooms and orchids. I knew nothing about flowers, but I explained the theme to our florist, Call Me Flower, and they did an amazing job.

Iain and I felt nervous, excited and happy. We loved how beautiful the venues and my mother looked.
I wore an Essense of Australia dress called Ophelia D3636 from Emma Louise Bridal. I fell in love with the gown, as it matched our woodland theme perfectly and was so flattering! The bridesmaids wore multi-way olive dresses, which they styled how they liked.
We had our friend, Tom Murphy, play guitar when the guests arrived and after the meal. In the evening, we had DJ Blackpool’s Midas Disco keep our guests entertained.
One of our favourite moments was telling everyone we were expecting a baby girl. 29

zzy and Ryan were brought together through unusual circumstances. “The first time I met Ryan, we were introduced by my previous partner in a nightclub, as he was one of his friends,” says Izzy. “I met him a couple of times after that, but we didn’t really speak much. A few years later, we found out that our partners were seeing each other behind our backs! Ryan and I started to message each other about it and the more we chatted, the more we realised we had lots in common and very similar values. Once I got to know Ryan, I discovered we went to the same high school and knew a lot of the same people.” Ryan organised a surprise birthday party for Izzy’s 23rd birthday. “My birthday gift from him was a surprise holiday with two of our friends to Las Vegas,” shares the bride. “Fast forward to the holiday and Ryan and his friend insisted we book a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. After flying around for a while, we eventually landed and enjoyed a little picnic. Ryan called me over to one side for a photo. Before I knew it, Ryan was giving a speech about how there was a reason we’d come to Vegas and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. In absolute shock, I said, ‘Is this a joke?!’ My friends and the other tourists on the helicopter all laughed. I obviously said ‘yes’ and we then proceeded to have our little picnic with added champagne, which I couldn’t drink because I was on cloud nine. We finished the evening by flying down the Las Vegas strip at night.”
SETTING THE SCENE Izzy and Ryan chose The Glass House in Blackpool to host their big day. “We were first attracted to The Glass House because of the huge windows, which let in lots of natural light and showed views of the grounds,” explains Izzy. “We’d seen a few venues that had hardly any windows and I didn’t like the vibe it gave the rooms. We loved how much of a blank canvas the venue was and that we had a lot of free will to do whatever we wanted with the venue. They allowed us to have CO2 guns during the evening, a smoke machine and cold spark fountains for our first dance, which was an absolute hit with our guests! We’ve since had people come up to us who we don’t even know, saying they’ve seen our wedding on Instagram because of the CO2 guns, which is really cool! “Luckily for me, Ryan had given me the nod to basically decorate the space however I wanted with the occasional seal of approval from himself,” adds Izzy. “I originally wanted a really whimsical mauve theme with lots of candles and fairylights, but as you plan a wedding, you constantly see things that you like and change your mind. In the end, we went with a modern and classic look, with a touch of a whimsical vibe to our day, with lilacs and purples along with lots of green and white flowers. I wanted something classic and timeless, but not overdone. For the rest of the decoration, I left it to the superb team at Above & Beyond Events Ltd., who sorted everything out for us. I told them what I wanted and the results were absolutely stunning.” The happy couple loved creating their table plan. “Typically, organising the seating plan is supposed to be stressful; however, we found it a breeze,” recalls the bride. “Don’t get me wrong, we had family members who don’t like other family members and all that jazz, but we found it quite easy and I think it was down to the number of tables we could have in the room and the number of people we could have around one table. We already knew who we wanted on our top table from the very beginning: Ryan’s parents and my grandparents, as they’ve been my parents; I was even walked down the aisle by my grandad.” Izzy asked her friend to supply their flowers. “I’m extremely lucky to have an amazingly talented friend who used to have her own flower business,” reveals Izzy. “I asked her to create our wedding flowers, and she did a fantastic job; we had lots of compliments. “With the cake, I was extremely lucky to have a client who creates the

most incredible-tasting cakes,” continues the bride. “I gave her a photo for inspiration and she recreated it with our chosen flavours. We went for a four-tiered design, with each layer having a different flavour. It was huge, but she did it so cheaply that we couldn’t resist! My florist friend decorated the cake with flowers and placed my cake topper from Etsy on top.” Twelve Restaurant & Lounge Bar provided the couple’s food for the day. “We went for a taster menu evening and everything was beautiful,” says Izzy. “The staff were extremely helpful and gave us ideas on what we could do with each dish. We had to pick two options for each course for the taster, then decide on which one to have on our wedding menu, and let me tell you, coming from two foodies, it was extremely difficult to pick one as we liked every single option we tasted!”
DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore an Essense of Australia dress called D3247 from Dreamcatcher Bridal Boutique in Kirkham,” shares Izzy. “When my maid-of-honour and I walked into the boutique, it was such a surreal experience. It was a positive, light, and airy space, which gave me good vibes before I had even tried on the dress! One of the lovely ladies who work there was helping me into the dress and before she could even fasten me in fully, I already knew it was the one! I paired the dress with a cathedral-tiered veil that had small, delicate diamonds on it, as I wanted something long to match the train but nothing that was going to interfere with the lace detailing at the bottom of the train. I didn’t want any fussy jewellery or hair pins, as I wanted a sleek, minimal look with the dress and train taking centre stage.” Ryan and his groomsmen opted for three-piece black tuxedos with black shoes, white shirts and black bow ties. “I really wanted this look for Ryan and the lads,” explains the bride. “Even my nephew, the pageboy, had a black suit with a bow tie and looked so cute! “When looking for bridesmaids’ dresses, we struggled to find the right mauve colour as there’s about 100 different shades and nothing looked right, so we ended up going for lilac grey dresses from ASOS,” adds Izzy. “My goddaughter, the flowergirl, wore a white dress from Next, which she was obsessed with and didn’t want to take off, along with her flower crown and wand.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We hired Alex Birtwell to play the guitar and sing during the ceremony,” recalls Izzy. “We’d seen him at a wedding fair and really liked him. He also hosted our reception and played our first dance song. Ryan and his lads were singing and playing the guitar along with Alex for the guests outside. As it was a lovely, hot day, it set the mood and entertained everyone. It also reinforced to our friends and family that they were in for a fun-packed day.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “I remember on the day feeling a sense of calm,” reveals Izzy. “I wasn’t stressed, but I was quite nervous to walk down the aisle without tripping over. You long for this day for so long and all the stress of planning literally don’t even matter; it all disappears on the day. If we could do it all again every day, we would! Looking back at our day and on our wedding video, I made a mistake on our vows because I was nervous. When the celebrant was saying our vows to us, I just went blank and had to ask for her to repeat them a few times! “Our special day wouldn’t have gone as smoothly as it did without the exceptional help from Cieran from The Glass House,” continues Izzy. “He made the day so special. We felt really looked after and he was hilarious. All of our guests loved him and all of our suppliers had their praises sung by our guests! Cieran is honestly so fantastic at what he does.”

How to organise your dream wedding
ere at Your North West Wedding, we understand how overwhelming organising your nuptials can be. To help, we’ve spoken to local experts and asked for their tips on choosing the perfect suppliers and what you should be aware of before booking.
THE WOW FACTOR
Andrew Slinn from Phenomenal Fireworks (www.fireworkdisplay.co.uk) tells us how to choose a fireworks display provider for your wedding: Planning a fireworks display can add a dazzling touch to your special day. To ensure a memorable and safe experience, here are our top tips for couples seeking the perfect wedding fireworks: Start early: Begin your search for a fireworks display supplier well in advance. Quality providers may get booked quickly, especially during peak wedding seasons. Aim to secure your supplier at least six months before your wedding date, where possible. Check reputation and reviews: Research potential suppliers thoroughly. Look for reviews, testimonials, and feedback from previous clients. A reputable supplier should have a history of delivering exceptional displays and reliable service. They should also reply promptly to messages and emails during working hours. Insurance and permits: Confirm that the supplier is fully insured and holds the necessary permits and training for your wedding venue. Compliance with local regulations ensures a safe and legal display. Customisation options: Seek a supplier who can tailor the fireworks display to your preferences and wedding theme. Discuss colour schemes, music synchronisation and any specific effects you desire to make the
display uniquely yours. Visit previous displays or demos: If possible, attend a live display created by your chosen supplier or ask for video demonstrations. This provides a first-hand look at their work, allowing you to assess the quality and style of their fireworks. Budget considerations: Clearly define your budget for the fireworks display and communicate it to potential suppliers. A professional supplier will work with you to create a spectacular show within your financial constraints. Communication is key: Ensure the supplier is responsive and communicative. Clear and prompt communication regarding your vision, logistics and any special requirements will contribute to a seamless and stress-free experience. Backup plans for weather: Discuss contingency plans in case of adverse weather conditions. A reliable supplier should have measures in place to adapt to unforeseen circumstances without compromising safety. Remember, choosing a fireworks supplier is about more than just creating a visual spectacle; it’s about crafting a moment that will be cherished forever. Take the time to find a supplier who understands your vision and can turn it into a breathtaking reality. 45

you’re having a formal wedding, you’ll want to choose a more romantic song. If you’re having a more casual wedding, you can choose something more upbeat. Make sure the song is the right length. You don’t want your first dance to be too short or too long. A good rule of thumb is to choose a song that is between two and three minutes long. Consider choosing a song from a movie or TV show that you and your partner love. You could also choose a song in a different language or a song that is special to your culture. If none of the popular songs resonate with you and you’re still lost trying to find what your dance should be, have you considered having a custom or bespoke first dance? Remember, choosing your perfect first dance song is an important decision, but it shouldn’t be stressful.

Choosing the perfect first dance song is important, as it will set the tone for the rest of your reception. If you’re not sure where to start, here are a few tips: Choose a song that has meaning for you and your partner. Jane Colman from Wreay Syke Alpaca (www.wreaysykealpacas.co.uk) explains how you can include alpacas in your big day: Set your budget first and write down what necessities there are, such as venue, food, cake, dresses, etc., then you can work out how much you have to spend on the things that you’d love to include as part of your special day but wouldn’t necessarily need! The earlier you start looking for venues and suppliers, the better, 46

If you want alpacas to be a part of your celebrations, then you need to check early with your venue to see if they will allow alpacas on their grounds. If you’re not sure about a company’s reputation, then TripAdvisor, social media and website reviews are a good place to start researching.

Christina Davies from Fish 2 Photography (www.fish2.co.uk) shares her tips on finding your dream photographer: When looking for a photographer, the best place to start is online. Look at social media pages, websites, blogs and online magazines. Have a look at what catches your eye, is it documentary, fine art, traditional, or high fashion? Think about what is really drawing you and focus on those types of photographers. Visit wedding fairs in your local area or arrange to meet up and chat with photographers whose Instagrams you really like. Ask to see photos of real couples from a wedding day when you meet. Look through images all the way from getting ready to the ceremony, couple portraits, and the evening reception. A lot of photographers will have albums, either online or printed, that you can look through as you chat. The next thing to think about is: who do you feel comfortable with? When you met the photographer, did you feel comfortable and did you feel you could chat for a while? It’s really important that you feel at ease with whoever you choose to photograph your wedding day and that they have the experience to handle everything a wedding day can throw at them. I’ve been a wedding photographer for 15 years and I’m sure I’ve still not seen everything that could happen at a wedding. With that in mind, here are my top tips to help you when choosing a photographer: •Look online at styles you like and ask friends for recommendations and who they had photograph their day. •Meet up and chat with a photographer before you book and make sure you feel comfortable with them. •Ensure you are happy with their style, packages and experience before you book. •Don’t book at the meeting. Go away and chat to make sure you are both comfortable, something I always encourage couples to do. Once you’ve decided, email them and let them know your decision. •If you aren’t sure, it’s fine to ask further questions by phone or email or meet with other photographers. •Book the photographer you love. It’s important to remember that the photos will be your lasting memory from the day, so you want to capture lots of great memories.

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC: wedding worries www.joemather-photography.co.uk
Our experts solve your problems
Once you’ve decided on your budget, it’s really about shopping around and making sure you find a photographer that fits your day. Knowing what you want is one way of keeping your costs down or up, depending on how you look at it. Do you need an album, or can you do it yourself? Do you want a pre-wedding shoot? Do you need fullday coverage? Are you getting married mid-week? How far in advance are you booking your wedding? I can only speak about my own business, as each photographer will be different, but I only offer full-day coverage for Saturday weddings. However, if the couple doesn’t want getting-ready shots or first dance pictures, I’ll usually do a tailored quote. Once we are within about eight months of a wedding date, I’ll then take a look at shorter packages. Shorter bookings are a lot more expensive per hour, but it’s usually relevant to the quantity of images you’ll receive. Most of the key events at a wedding happen within a four- to five-hour time span, especially if you put the speeches before the meal. One thing I would not suggest doing is getting uncle Bob to photograph the wedding. Now, unless uncle Bob has two camera bodies, two great prime lenses and has shot his fair share of weddings, it’s safe to say he probably won’t do a great job. Wedding photography is about knowing what’s going to happen before it generally does and being able to compose and expose a shot perfectly in a fast-paced environment when, more often than not, the light is challenging. CHERISHED MEMORIES I want to book our photographer and was wondering how I can keep the price down without compromising on quality?
THE WRITE STUFF How can we add a personal touch to our wedding stationery? Find a wedding stationer who will work with you as a couple to design stationery that reflects you and your personalities. After all, that’s what it’s all about! My favourite way of personalising your stationery is to add illustrated portraits as the main feature and better yet, your furry friends too. If you’ve already built a family, it’s a great way to include your children and it will act as a special keepsake. Another option is to have your venue illustrated, or simply include things that you enjoy. I’ve created lots of designs along the way, including Harry Potter, Marvel and even Day of the Dead themes. Whatever you choose, just make sure it reflects you and that you love it. After all, your stationery can add to the entire vibe of the day when done right. Natalie www.designedbynatalie.co.uk 55
While everyone, of course, hopes that their wedding day will go without a hitch, unfortunately, things can and do go wrong. And when they do, it can leave you significantly out of pocket if you don’t have insurance. With the average cost of a wedding coming in at around £20,000, it’s a major financial commitment that you want to make sure is protected. Wedding insurance covers you for things such as cancellation and rearrangement, failure of wedding suppliers, personal liability, damage or theft of your ceremonial attire, wedding gifts, rings, photography and more. Here are a few things to be aware of when you’re shopping around for a wedding insurance policy for your big day: Getting the right amount of cover: Many wedding insurance plans offer different levels of cover. So, work out the cost of your wedding by including all your planned expenses, such as venues, catering, photography, flowers, attire, cakes, entertainment, transport, etc. Once you have an approximate budget in mind, choose the level of cover that covers this planned expenditure. For instance, if you are planning to spend around £20,000 in total on your wedding, then you will need to get cover that will compensate you up to that level should you need to cancel the wedding. Don’t delay: While the wedding to-do list may seem never-ending, it’s important to not delay when it comes to buying wedding insurance. An ideal time to buy is as soon as you’ve paid for any part of the event and you have a venue and date arranged so that your deposits are covered. Make sure to check the policy details, as each insurer approaches this aspect differently. Cheap isn’t always best: Make sure to shop around and compare policies. Look at things like the details of the cover, customer reviews and the reputation of the insurance providers. Sometimes the best deal isn’t the one with the smallest price tag. Double check the cancellation policies: Cancellations are never fun, but they unfortunately do happen, so reviewing the cancellation policy is important. Make sure you understand the terms thoroughly and ask questions if needed. A clear understanding now can save you from any nasty little surprises down the line. Tailor your cover: Whether it’s an extra layer of protection for unforeseen circumstances, cover for elements of the celebration, like a marquee, or public liability cover should there be any ‘slip-ups’ on the dancefloor. Make sure to check the standard policy and review any of the add-ons so that you get the cover you need. While no one ever thinks about having to claim, things can and do go wrong, and so protecting your special day is a small price to pay for peace of mind. There are so many different ways to bring the spring season into your wedding stationery: Colour palette: Think of colours that are inspired by spring, such as soft pinks, greens, blues and yellows. These colours evoke a sense of freshness and new beginnings. Floral designs: Incorporate floral motifs into your stationery and add flowers that are in season during that time of year. Wildlife: Include illustrations that are associated with spring, such as butterflies, birds, bees, or dragonflies. These elements can add a whimsical and romantic feel to your stationery. Seasonal typography: Choose fonts that reflect the light and airy feel of spring. Consider elegant and script fonts that convey a sense of romance and celebration. Remember to keep a cohesive theme throughout your wedding stationery, including save-the-dates, invitations and any on-the-day items. This will create a unified and visually appealing look for your wedding. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY My wife-to-be and I are thinking of getting wedding insurance. How do we go about this?
SPRING FEVER I’m having a spring wedding and was wondering how I could incorporate the time of year into my stationery?
Believe it or not, a lot of us feel this way about being in front of a camera. The best piece of advice we can give is to choose a photographer and videographer whose company you actually enjoy. Look through their portfolio to ensure they have experience capturing authentic and emotional moments. Share your concerns with your supplier beforehand, as any photographer worth their salt will be able to put you at ease and offer guidance on posing and candid shots. Remember that the day is about celebrating your love and commitment to each other. Focus on your partner and the joy of the moment will shine through in the photos. STYLED SHOOT
THE BEAUTY OF THE LAKES Be inspired by this stunning styled shoot at New House Farm Images courtesy of David Rucker Photography
D
avid Rucker Photography worked with a team of talented suppliers to create this stunning styled shoot. “Being a qualified mountaineer, it’s little wonder that I shoot the majority of my weddings in the Lakes or the Highlands of Scotland, where I’ve been in constant wanderlust since I was a young boy,” says David. “I love being surrounded by nature, so when my favourite venue in The Lake District, New House Farm, asked me to photograph a photo shoot with some of their favourite suppliers, I jumped at the opportunity. New House Farm is no ordinary venue; quite simply, it is something else. Nestled in the incomparable Vale of Lorton, surrounded by fells, it feels like you are detached from the hustle and bustle of places like Bowness, Grasmere and Keswick. A date was set, and little did we know that as the time came around, it would be the hottest day of the year. After many cold drinks and a cheeky ice cream later, we hit the slopes of Latrigg above Keswick, where fortunately there was a slight breeze in the air.” 59

“Although neutrals are here to stay, we are expecting to see lots more colour this year, from bright, vibrant florals through to bold wedding stationery. Keep an eye out for coloured and patterned linens that have been popping up over the last year, they really bring venues to life!” – Maria from Detail. Event Styling & Design.

f you’ve booked your venue, then the next thing you’ll be thinking about is how to style it. To help give you some inspiration, we’ve asked local suppliers for their 2024 trend predictions…
“Tapered candles and bud vases are a more cost-effective way of dressing your table, but they look more elegant than jam jars. Tapered-coloured candles help add height and colour to the table décor.” – Jemma from Jemma Khan Studio. 65
“With Pantone’s Colour of the Year being ‘Peach Fuzz’, I think we’ll see a move away from last year’s bright pops of colour to big blousy blooms in pastel tones with peaches, creams, pastel pinks and yellows taking centre stage.” – Indie from IndieBloom. 66

“The positive impact that sustainability has had on the wedding industry has made us more conscious of the products we use and how we re-use them. Other styling elements, such as favours, are becoming better quality and have a better purpose, with guests and re-use at the forefront. Q&A
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best TIMELESS ELEGANCE What’s a classic bridal look that I’ll love in years to come?
As a bridal and occasion make-up specialist, I believe that the prevailing make-up trend in 2024 will be timeless glam and natural elegance. Brides are gravitating towards looks that enhance their features with a touch of sophistication. Imagine radiant skin, subtly defined eyes with bronze tones, rosy cheeks and a focus on the lips. As the demand for pared-back foundations and skin tints increases, we can expect to see more looks that conceal and treat the skin simultaneously. Brides will be opting for fresh, second-skin-like make-up that accentuates their individual beauty, steering away from overly dramatic styles. Ella French www.facebook.com/makeupbyellafrench 78

TREND SETTER What will be the biggest make-up trends in 2024?
A surefire way to ensure you adore your wedding photos in years to come is to choose a classic and timeless make-up look. The beauty industry is quick-paced and always evolving, with new trends developing on a weekly basis. However, some things will never go out of style and that makes the timeless look a must for your special day. Choose warm hues and neutral, earthy tones throughout your look. These will complement your skin tone and make your features really pop. A simple eye look with matte shadows is perfect for this. Consider a cat eye if you like eyeliner; if black feels too dark and heavy, why not try brown for a softer overall feel while still adding depth and definition? Use cluster or single faux eyelashes at the outer corner of the eye to open the eye rather than volume strip lashes, which have the opposite effect. A slightly dewy foundation will glide over imperfections and detract from blemishes and texture. Top this with a rosy blush and a soft highlight that will catch the light. The lip calls for neutral, glossy tones that are comfortable to wear all day. Don’t forget to set your make-up so it lasts into the early hours! A professional artist will be well equipped to help you achieve your desired look, so don’t be afraid to ask questions and reach out to them for a chat! Megan Hartley www.meganhartleymakeupartist.com

A song of sun AND SEA
County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination
W
hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.
ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.
A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.
you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.
REST AND RELAXATION
FUN IN THE SUN
One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that
Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was
84
HONEYMOON
Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.
A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.
HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and
introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.

Viva España! Kelly Andrews experiences the finer side of life at Hostal de La Gavina in Spain’s Costa Brava
M
y name is Kelly, I’m 42 years old, British and I’ve never been to Spain. Never. How did I manage to miss out on the quintessential Brits abroad destination? Probably because that exact connotation was all I’d ever seen of Spain: Ibiza, 18-30 holidays, and all that jazz. It didn’t appeal. How wrong was I? Let me tell you, the breathtakingly beautiful Costa Brava could not be further from all of that. Having been on my first adventure to sunny Spain recently, I’m happy to report it’s now my most beloved part of the world, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to honeymooners, and here’s why...
THE GOLDEN AGE OF LUXURY Nestled between two secluded bays on the Costa Brava, Spain’s less trodden coastline, S’Agaro’s Hostal de La Gavina sings with elegance, luxury and old-world glamour from every corner. Since opening in 1932, the hotel has been patronised by stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age including Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Peter Sellers; and, for me at least, evokes memories of classics such as To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Indeed, Pandora starring Ava Gardner, Suddenly Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mr Arkadin by Orson Welles were all shot here. With 74 suites and rooms with sweeping views over the Mediterranean, its effortless style and second-to-none hospitality will give you a honeymoon to remember. Comfortably ensconced in one of the hotel’s 11 superior rooms, I was very much taken with its Mediterranean romance. The balcony terrace and its breathtaking view is something I’ll never forget. From the moment I arrived and swung open the doors, I sat there looking out to sea and would quite happily still be there now. It was definitely the most difficult farewell when the time came to leave. For two honeymooners enjoying breakfast here, surely there could be nothing better. The glorious shining jewel in the hotel’s crown though is the Royal Suite,
which has played host to Spanish royalty, celebs and honeymooners alike. Stepping through its doors is akin to entering a stately home. Designed in spectacular Louis XV style, the walls are adorned with wood and silks, while Sevres vases, only otherwise found in the Louvre, decorate the alcoves. The opulent, genuine Bohemian candle-glass chandelier is the sitting room’s centrepiece and looms large above the decorative marble floor. Of course, the large terrace spanning the width of the suite is a highlight, complete with loungers and patio set ready and waiting for lazy days sipping champagne and enjoying a bite to eat. The first free moment I got during the trip, not caring a jot for the rain (which we brought with us from Blighty) I made a beeline for the outdoor, seawater pool. I’d been excited to take a dip from the moment I arrived. Bobbing along alone in the bracingly icy, buoyant waters, looking out over the bay at sunset was an experience of sheer bliss. Of course, during the warmer months with the sun beating down on it, the pool will offer you yet another vibe, but this was heavenly for me! Alongside the pool, facing the Med, is the Gavina Spa. Its privileged indoor swimming area boasts magnificent views over the bay of S’Agaro along with a Jacuzzi, two spaces for massages and treatments, plus saunas and a small gym room.
A FOODIE’S PARADISE In nearby Girona, there are no fewer than 18 Michelin stars held between 12 restaurants, including one with three, and Hostal de La Gavina is very much part of that local foodie culture. Indeed, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Candlelight, is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Romain Fornell. Renowned for its exquisite haute cuisine menu, the restaurant combines tradition and modernity in its beautifully tranquil setting where candles flicker and piano music fills the air. I had the privileged opportunity to try the eight-course Spring Collection tasting menu, which was utterly unforgettable. Dishes included white asparagus, beurre blanc

HONEYMOON REVIEW
and caviar; tortellini of langoustine and foie with Nantua cream; and squab in two firings with souffle potatoes. All was expertly paired with unbelievable wine selections by the knowledgeable sommelier. Equally unmissable is La Taverna del Mar, located on the beach of Sant Pol, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. Let’s be clear, seafood is a big deal here, as it is for the region as a whole, and this eatery will bring you the freshest and very best. It was here I discovered Catalonian delicacy sonsos, or Mediterranean sand eel. Fried and crispy it’s delicious served with a chilled glass of local white wine. Plus, the serving of wild sea bass in a sea salt crust is a wonderful piece of theatre, not to mention the perfect way to cook fish. It’s also well worth trying Galician clams and red tuna tartare. In fact, whatever the experts suggest, trust me, go with it. I’ve never eaten seafood like it and given the restaurant’s partnership with local fisherman to deliver the freshest fare, I likely never will again. For a lighter meal in between dips, head to poolside restaurant Garbi. Its light and healthy menu offers many of the delights found in the renowned Mediterranean diet. The paella here is to die for!
on Carrer Ciutadans. For dessert the final stop was the oh-so quirky, Wonkaesque Rocambolesc Gelerateria. As I was visiting during Girona’s Temp de Flors (Flower Festival) they were offering new floral flavours created especially for the occasion, which had to be tasted! If you’re a wine enthusiast, a little further out of town you’ll find Clos d’Agon (https://closdagon.com), a 15th-century vineyard based around a picturesque historical farmhouse. Hostal de La Gavina has recently partnered with it to offer guests exclusive wine experiences. I met the estate’s Nora for a fascinating tour, where I learned of the vineyard’s own micro climate, which allows it to be ecological as the wind clears the humidity creating the perfect environment for its fruit. The grapes are all picked by hand so only the best ones get through at harvest time allowing the passionate winemakers, such as Miguel, to make award-winning wines. Although the aforementioned wet weather didn’t permit us to, you do have the chance to idyllically picnic among the vines, as you indulge in a glass of the wonderful Clos d’Agon Valmaña wine with cheese and charcuterie board.
OUT AND ABOUT
TAKE IN THE VIEW
Just one hour north of Barcelona and half an hour from beautiful Girona, Hostal de La Gavina is excellently appointed for exploring the Costa Brava. I headed into the medieval city of Girona for a culinary tour and thoroughly recommend a visit. Catalans are quite rightly very proud of their local dishes and delicacies, and during the tour I had the opportunity to sample many of them. If you’re in town, do seek out a xiuxiu for breakfast. Made from an old Girona recipe these sweet treats can only be found in the city and its surroundings. When in Catalonia it’s virtually impossible not to try some jamon (Iberico ham), unless of course you’re vegetarian or vegan in which case there’s no shortage of equally divine alternative local bites. Served with some Manchego cheese or perhaps some local Catalan goat’s cheese and a glass of Cava it’s a real treat. I became addicted in a very short space of time! Girona was originally a city of traders, which is a heritage still evident in the city’s food markets. With vegetables at least three times the size of anything I’d ever seen before and more fresh fish than you could ever dream of finding in your local Morrisons – anchovies, cod tartare, sonsos – they’re worth looking in on. Paella is of course a must-have in Spain, but if you get the chance, do try Catalan speciality Fideua, made from short noodles instead of rice. Packed so full of flavour, you won’t be happy until you’ve finished the dish! I stopped at L’Arròs &... for mine, an intimate seafood restaurant
For days when you’re looking to stay a little closer to base, the Cami de Ronda coastal path (www.camideronda.com) runs alongside Hostal de La Gavina. The entire 43-kilometre stretch would take around two days to walk in its entirety, but you can enjoy a gentle stroll in stretches however you wish. I thoroughly enjoyed a short 30-minute stint along the bay, with it’s breathtaking views of S’Agaro, the Mediterranean and the historical hotel with its folly, a particular treat first thing in the morning. So, there you have it. The Costa Brava is an idyllic corner of the world, a paradise for foodies, wine lovers and history buffs alike. Whether you’re looking to relax and enjoy the luxurious surroundings, or set out on an adventure to explore the region, Catalonia has so much to offer and Hostal de La Gavina is a dream of a base.

Parisian elegance
Part of the prestigious Oetker Collection, Le Bristol Paris is everything you could dream of from a once in a lifetime visit to La Ville-Lumière, The City of Light. Rachel Westall checks it out...
I
f a honeymoon with the wow factor is what you’re after, you’ve found it. The iconic Le Bristol Paris is located at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The hotel opened in April 1925, when the roaring twenties were in full swing. During that carefree and prosperous era, Paris attracted all the big movers and shakers from the worlds of culture and fashion: think Balenciaga, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Picasso, Mondrian and Dali. Over the years, famous clients have continued to parade through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: from Rita Hayworth to Charlie Chaplin. Today, photographers still anticipate who will be revolving through the entrance of this chic establishment. This fashionable location is at the heart of Paris, moments’ walk from Metro line Madelaine and walking distance to sights including the Tuileries, Les Invalides and Musee d’Orsay. When you want to rest your feet from city life, the indoor rooftop pool on the sixth floor makes this hotel a cut above the rest. Expect views over Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower. Utterly breathtaking. The spa, backing onto a courtyard garden, offers a menu of luxurious treatments. There are eight treatment rooms, including a private couple suite. What more could you want after a morning at The Louvre than a soothing, restorative massage?

HONEYMOON
PEACEFUL PARIS Did you know, Le Bristol was the first hotel in France to receive the title of Palace? This is a much higher honour than being a five-star hotel. The rooms really are the epitome of comfort – and they’re huge! Indulge in suites with beautiful Louis XV and Louis XVI-period furniture and original artworks. Vast marble bathrooms have roomy showers and deep tubs; many have dual vanities, Dyson hairdryers and plush toiletries. Le Bristol’s Junior Suites can be extended with adjoining Deluxe rooms to create more space for the entire family. Everyone is welcome.
WELCOME HOME Le Bristol Paris is a house of incomparable Parisian style and elegance, where you immediately feel at home. It has an extraordinary way of welcoming guests from the moment you enter. Expect warmth, conversation and even a sighting of Socrate, the resident hotel cat. For pet-owning guests, Le Bristol Paris is singular in its ability to welcome fourlegged family members. As a family-run hotel, VIP treatment is waiting for your mini me’s! Children receive a welcome gift on arrival, as well as special surprise in the room, and the concierge team can arrange a wide range of activities in and around Paris that are sure to appeal to young and old alike. There’s even a kid’s club!
THE SECRET GARDEN A favourite place of mine was the new garden - a hidden treasure where you forget you’re in the French capital. It’s an oasis of flowers and calm where each tree, shrub and flower was deliberately chosen with care by Lady Arabella Lennox – Boyd, world-renowned landscape designer.
HOME TO FOUR MICHELIN STARS Foodies’, there’s no need to leave your hotel. At Epicure restaurant, chef Eric Frechon, who holds four Michelin stars, has created a celebrated establishment that’s typically French and fabulous. White tablecloths and immaculate attention to detail, this is for special occasions. Secondly, there’s the less formal Le 114 Faubourg, for lunch and dinner, which also possesses its own Michelin star. Here, sample dishes such as hand-chopped beef tartar flavoured with anchovies, and potato wafers or Grenebloise style roasted brill, cauliflower mousseline with seaweed butter – mouthwatering. Furthermore, Café Antonia reflects a more spontaneous side of Parisian life, where you can enjoy breakfast, stop for coffee or enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine. Le Bristol really is a reason in itself to visit the City of Love. You’ll fall head over heels time and time again.
