EDITOR’S LETTER
Winter warmers W
ell, here we are at the end of the another year. Is it me, or did 2023 fly by faster than usual? Mind you, with the pandemic growing more and more distant in our rear view mirrors as weddings embrace a sense of back- to-normality, it’s no wonder really. The highlights for me were the Coronation and Carlos Alcaraz’s brilliant win at Wimbledon, as well as getting to see some more of Europe and, of course, celebrating Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding’s shiny new website! When you’ve read this issue, why not have a look around? There’s plenty on offer to keep you ahead of the curve with your wedding planning. Autumn has been unseasonably warm, so I have everything crossed for some chilly weather as we head into winter; especially for those of you with cosy December nuptials in store. Summer’s all well and good, but the time comes when it’s great to just snuggle up in your favourite jumper and curl up with your spouse-to-be in front of your favourite Netflix show, or better still, with your tablet and favourite wedding magazine! This issue we go all out on the romance front as local photographers show us the look of love. Meanwhile, if food is what’s on your mind, turn to our catering feature where we round up some of the region’s top caterers, ready and waiting to create the menu of your dreams. Finally, for a touch of winter magic, check out our Hot Topic pages where local experts tell us how to bring the joy of the season to your nuptials. So, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

REAL WEDDINGS
K
erry and Mark met through a mutual friend, and on the first night they met went for a few drinks and a game of doubles pool. Once they got talking Kerry learned that Mark was a plumber, so when they all went back to her apartment to continue to the socialising, he fixed her sink! One week later Mark asked her for a date, and they haven’t looked back since. Mark says he was attracted to Kerry’s glow and confidence. The way he put it in his wedding speech goes: “When I first met Kerry, I remember turning to my friend and saying, ‘Golly gosh, she sure is an attractive lady. I do hope she takes my hand in courtship sometime...’ Or words to that effect!” Kerry meanwhile was drawn to Mark’s stoicism, charm and chivalrousness. Being a very private person, Mark wanted to pop the question somewhere away from the hustle and bustle. So, he booked The Chapel Suite at Lumley Castle in Durham for a weekend away for Kerry’s birthday, which is where he got down on one knee. Kerry says, “After being together for 10 years, we knew each other really well, so I guessed that Mark as going to propose. Mark knew that I knew, but we never discussed it until later – after I’d said, ‘Yes.’” The couple tied the knot on 13th May, 2023. Here, Kerry tells us all about it...
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION As Kerry and Mark both have a strong Christian faith, getting married in church was a priority. They chose St Mary & All Saints Church as they’d fallen in love with its idyllic countryside setting in Great Budworth. Kerry says, “We also wanted the service to be the original and traditional wedding service from The Book of Common Prayer 1662, which is quite unusual, so we had to find a church and vicar who was prepared to undertake this for us.” It was love at first sight for Arley Hall too once they laid eyes on the building and its gardens. “It fitted our ideas for the traditional theme of our wedding,” Kerry explains. “The events team at Arley, in particular Ashley, were so helpful and passionate about being a key part of the day and delivering their service with pride and professionalism.”
PERFECTLY PLANNED “Organisation is one of my super powers,” Kerry says. “I have colour co-ordinated spreadsheets for everything, including going on holiday. So, when it came to the wedding I had to delve deeper to pull off the magical day we wanted. What started off making a few notes and a timetable for the day ended up turning into a full blown eight-page wedding manual! It included who needed to be where and at what time, along with meticulous information about which tasks people needed to complete, how and when. It even included things like how fast the horse and carriage travels in miles per minute (one mile every eight minutes by the way), plus supplier information, names, emails, contact, telephones and websites, and so, so much more. Now, I know that this makes me sound like a bridezilla, but everyone can (hopefully) vouch for me that I wasn’t. It was a collection of information following discussions with suppliers and it just felt that the, now famous, manual was a great central place to collate it all!”
“Everyone said I was one of the happiest brides they’d every seen! I was smiling from ear to ear and laughing all day.” – Kerry 27

SETTING THE SCENE
REAL WEDDINGS
The couple had their hearts set on a grand, regal vibe for their big day. “We even had a wedding coat of arms made so we could achieve that strong theme throughout our stationery and decorative touches,” Kerry shares. Everything from the invitations, which were scrolls presented in boxes, to the scratch card favour holders, all bore the crest. Slim candlesticks were dotted around the venue and held ivory candles, while tall, much bigger candelabras sat on the tables. Little trifle bowls full of flowers lined the centre, and included fresh eucalyptus and ruscus. The bride’s bouquet featured burgundy and cream roses surrounded by foliage, while the bridesmaids’ were slightly smaller and made from cream roses. The A0-size table plan was suspended from a copper frame with ribbon. There was also a mirrored easel at the main entrance bearing a welcome to guests as they arrived. The pair also hung one of their engagement pictures on a frame for guests to sign in place of a guest book. They provided a pen made from an old spitfire, so even this was a feature. The big-day bake featured five tiers iced in a white porcelain effect with gold M&K initials and lace detailing complete with a bride and groom topper. “The day before the wedding, my mum presented me with a silver shoe that was on my late grandma and grandad’s cake when they got married. So, of course, this was put on ours too,” Kerry says. The flavours were: double chocolate with vanilla, chocolate orange buttercream; lemon and poppyseed with lemon curd buttercream; dairy-free raspberry and almond; traditional fruit cake; and traditional Victoria sponge. A vintage double decker bus was hired to transport guests, plus Mark and his ushers, from Arley Hall to the church and back again. Kerry arrived in a beautiful cream carriage drawn by white horses.
LOOKING THE PART Kerry wore a Martina Liana Mikado dress, with a two-metre train and cathedral veil. “We ordered bespoke lace for my veil so that it matched my dress,” she tells us. Of all the gowns she tried it was the one that fitted her body type the best and perfectly matched the grand vision for the day. Kerry was keen to keep accessories simple so as not to detract from the gown and opted for a mined diamond necklace on a platinum snake chain, and her late grandmother’s watch, along with earrings, which were a gift from her mum. There was an outfit change in the evening, allowing the bride to dance the night away to her heart’s content! Mark wore a tailor-made brown tweed suit with a burgundy stitch running through it. The date of the wedding and the couple’s names were embroidered on the inside. He also looked dapper in his matching tweed waistcoat made from paisley two-tone metallic burgundy fabric. His shirt too was bespoke and featured his initials embroidered on the cuff with copper penny cufflinks to finish. The ushers were dressed to match Mark, but with slightly different waistcoats. The bridesmaids looked stunning in burgundy fitted gowns, and the flowergirl was super-cute in her white dress with burgundy band and bow.
“Our wedding was only as incredible as it was because our suppliers made our day that way.” – Kerry 29
CELEBRATE IN STYLE Kerry and Mark went all out to make sure their guests had a fun and memorable day. The bill included a gospel choir who performed This Little Light of Mine during the ceremony and sang again later at Arley Hall, and a harpist. The list of evening entertainment was jam packed with laser clay pigeon shoots, a photo booth with 1950s-style camera, acrobats, a magician, a DJ and a live rock band. Kerry even surprised her guests by singing her own rendition of Proud Mary along with them.

REAL WEDDINGS
LOVE
Aimee and Sami styled their day with a modern rustic flair and burnt orange at the heart of their palette Images courtesy of SMH Photography
A
imee and Sami met through a mutual friend in Brighton, East Sussex. When Aimee had gone to visit her one day and was picked up from the station, Sami was already in the car. They were introduced and Sami told Aimee she smelled good! A few days later the two began texting and that’s where their story began. Sami proposed on New Year’s Eve in 2020. She’d planned for the two of them to go to London and have a big New Year’s Eve together, but Covid had other ideas and the country went into lockdown again. So, Sami decorated their flat while Aimee was out and cooked them a delicious meal. She’d intended to wait until midnight to pop the question,
but was too excited and ended up proposing sooner. “It was absolutely perfect, and a big surprise,” Aimee remembers. “We actually had a different venue booked but I took Sami to see Colshaw Hall just to be sure, and we both fell in love,” Aimee shares. From the grounds to the building itself, the venue was truly in harmony with them and the fact that there was accommodation on site made it even better. “We really wanted to get married outside too, which Colshaw Hall could accommodate, so it was a no brainer,” Aimee explains. They chose 29th August as W-day, and here Aimee gives us the lowdown...
33
I wore a Martina Liana gown. I found it in the second bridal boutique I went to and as soon as I put it on I knew it was the one! It was an A-line dress, which really suited my figure. We tweaked it a little by adding a bit of sparkle, which is me all over! I felt like a real-life princess.
I had a pendant with a picture of my mum in it attached to my bouquet, as well as a picture of Sami’s grandma, both of whom are no longer with us. It meant they both walked down the aisle with me and were a very special part of our day.
Willow and Fig did an amazing job of reusing the aisle décor inside the Peel Suite, using flowers and wooden rustic textures they created a warm and beautiful atmosphere. Sami completely surprised me with her outfit of choice, and OMG did she look incredible! She wore a wide leg white suit with a body and accents of burnt orange to match my bridesmaids. She accessorised with a small flower crown and buttonhole to match my bouquet.
34
As Sami is South African we had keyrings made of South African animals with a note about her grandma’s charity, and why it’s so close to our hearts. The children had their own colouring books etc so they could have fun too.
REAL WEDDINGS
Our centrepieces had a wooden and brass rustic feel to lend them a more modern edge. We didn’t want too much height on the round tables so that our guests could all talk feely.
Putting a table plan together is harder than it looks. In fact, this was probably the hardest part of wedding planning! Willow and Fig did an incredible job of creating the table plan board as well as the table names, all in keeping with the rustic vibe we were going for.
As my family is Italian we opted for a taste of Italy. Our starter was a trio of fish in the style of fish and chips, an homage to Brighton – where we met and where Sami is from. It’s those little details that really meant a lot to us.
Our three-tier cake was a buttercream Victoria sponge. We went with something to suit our rustic vibe, with added gold leaf and flowers. Alongside it we set up a double photo of both our parents cutting their wedding cakes. Combined with a gorgeous backdrop it added an extra special touch.
As Sami is a DJ and we both have eclectic tastes in music so our tables were named after our favourite genres. Sami plays house music, so she got her own way and the top table was named after it!
We had fairylights behind the top table, which added a touch of magic and sparkle to our perfect day. We also had a ‘Til Death Do Us Party’ sign, which provided a great photo opportunity for guests once the party started. 35
We had DJs perform in the evening, including Sami. Although I told her she couldn’t do it for long as I wanted to dance with her. Sami’s bridal crew wore grey suits or dresses with burnt orange ties and pocket squares.
We set out garden games like space hoppers and tug of war, which all went down a treat with guests of all ages. We even had a tug of war contest between me and my bridesmaids and Sami and her bridal crew... we won of course! I told Sami we were going to Centre Parcs after the wedding, but on the morning of, I’d made a jigsaw for her to put together, which depicted the island in the Maldives were were actually going to!
My bridesmaids all wore long burnt orange dresses, which suited every skin tone. They looked just how I dreamed.
All of our suppliers went above and beyond for us, we felt very lucky to have picked these companies and the people who made our day special. Tracey from Colshaw Hall ensured everything ran smoothly for the day, and was great fun. Sandra and Steve, our photographers, felt like part of the family and were an absolute pleasure to be around.
Just breathe! Make sure your maid-of-honour or bridesmaids know what your plans for the day are, so if any questions arise, they can deal with them and you can enjoy the day in bliss.

A ROOM WITH A VIEW
Jenny and Gavin said “I do” against a backdrop of spectacular views at Waterfront Southport Hotel Images courtesy of Kevin Brown Photography
J
enny and Gavin met while working for the NHS. Gavin, who was based in the IT department, was repairing a printer at the time. The two got talking and a few weeks later he asked Jenny on a date. A year after that, they moved in together. In July 2021, when Covid restrictions eased the couple spent a weekend away together in London with a meal booked in The Shard. It was there at sunset that Gavin proposed. He’d pre-warned the staff who were standing by to take photographs and they supplied the pair with complimentary champagne. Jenny said, “Yes,” and they spent the evening drinking cocktails together and looking out over the city. After viewing a number of venues across the North West, Waterfront Southport Hotel stood out thanks to its 180-degree view of the Marine Lake and sea. The fact that it was close to home also helped and many friends and family members decided to make a weekend of it staying Friday through Sunday. Read on as Jenny tells us more about the big day – 15th July, 2023... 39
Gavin wore a dark grey suit with a sage green tie to complement the theme. His groomsmen and pageboys all wore matching grey suits, slightly lighter in colour than the groom’s and with the same sage green ties.
I walked down the aisle to I Just Called To Say I Love You by Stevie Wonder. That was the first song I learned to play on the piano at the age of nine and is my dad’s favourite. I always said I wanted to walk down the aisle with him to that tune and it was even more special since he’d been given the all clear from cancer five days beforehand.

We booked a harpist to play before, duri

The cake was a simple three-tiered bake with white roses decorating each layer.
Gavin presented me with a beautiful necklace at the end of his speech, which I wasn’t expecting. I haven’t taken it off since.
We had a big surprise planned for the evening. During my bouquet throw countdown, I stopped, turned and walked over to Gavin’s brother’s girlfriend. I handed her the bouquet and spun her around to see Gavin’s brother waiting on one knee with a ring! The room erupted and thankfully she said, “Yes”!
We had a DJ in the evenin g along with a photo booth with props and guests received their printe d photos there and then. We received a USB with them all on to view wh en we got home. It was a big hit and was great for us to see all of the snaps.

hatever your big-day theme, vibe or vision, there’s one thing we can all agree on: weddings are all about love. It might be easy to lose sight of it amid the chaos of planning, but nevertheless its the reason we’re all here. Weddings celebrate love in all its forms. Of course, everyone is gathered to celebrate the love between the two of you, but they’re there because they, in turn, love you. There’s also the pride and adoration on the faces of our couples’ parents or guardians that we can’t wait to see in our real wedding features. Even capturing a misty-eyed look from, or for, a beloved fur baby warms the heart. Certainly, we could all do with some good cheer so, we decided to ask the region’s wedding photographers to share their favourite loving looks.

CATERING
Food, glorious food Meet the region’s wedding caterers
A
dmit it, whose mind hasn’t immediately leapt to food whenever a wedding invitation arrives in the post. Or is that just us? For many of us, when we’re not eating, we’re thinking about it! So, it’s reasonable to assume that your wedding breakfast will be one of the most highly anticipated elements of your day – no pressure. What you might not have considered though is that it’s another medium through which you can express your personalities, thus making your big day uniquely you. The food should match your vibe from formal, seated, three-course affairs, to chilled grazing spreads. But it’s not only the way you eat, it’s what you eat that can also speak volumes about the two of you. Perhaps you met at a pub for your first date: opt for a menu of pub grub classics. Maybe you got engaged in a far-flung exotic location: give your menu an international twist. The options are endless and if you pick the correct caterer, they’ll creatively work with you to come up with your dream menu, sure to keep guests satisfied and remembering your day for all the right reasons. Read on as we introduce you to some local folk who can help...
BIG 5 CATERING
Now in its 10th year, Big 5 Catering has made a name for itself as a reliable catering business specialising in South African barbecues (or braais as they’re known in South Africa), hog roasts and lamb spit roasts. All meat marinades, spices and a selection of sauces are handmade to achieve that authentic South African flavour. Head chef and owner Darren Andrews has a passion for live fire cooking and sources wood from Namibia to bring that little bit extra to every barbecue he caters. It’s a passion that’s become a living for him.

“The team prides itself on sourcing local ingredients and crafting everything form scratch, ensuring a memorable dining experience on your big day.” – David White, Peninsula Catering
Olive Tree Catering was started and continues to be run by two chefs and their team, using the wealth of knowledge and skills they’ve built up over the past 50 years combined experience of working in high-quality hotels, restaurants and UK food businesses. With their skilled team of chefs, event management staff and extensive range of menus, the two believe they can cater for the requirements of all guests, even the fussiest ones! Olive Tree offers its own recipes and menu development using the best produce, along with fresh ingredients and a passion that ensures the team stay ahead of the latest trends in food. From formal sit-down menus, its renowned tapas wedding breakfast and even evening selections, things are done just a little bit differently! Owner John says, “Some caterers will book you in for a mass food tasting the minute they meet you, showing you all their best sellers, hoping that something sticks. We’ve had many a couple tell us they felt pressured when they’d been for a tasting and the food wasn’t what they really wanted, but felt uncomfortable saying so. At Olive Tree, we like to discuss your requirements first and at least offer a guide quotation based on the food you want. That way, you’ll have an idea of the overall cost for your wedding. Once happy, it’s then that we can book you in for a one-to-one tasting.”
“Be sure to discuss your requirements with your caterer before attending a tasting.” – John Trelfa, Olive Tree Catering 51
HOT TOPIC Winter vibes
Our experts offer stellar wedmin advice on creating an elegant winter wedding SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SMELLS Steph Pringle, weddings and events manager at The Manor, Greasby (https://themanorgreasby.co.uk) says: So much about the colder months can inspire your wedding day with added romance. Embrace the unique charm of winter and you can make your occasion as warm and inviting as it is elegant. Rich feature colours used as accents in your wedding décor can bring a romantic warmth to your big day. Contrast deep tones such as forest green or burgundy with white and gold accents to evoke a cosy winter feel. Amplify this inviting atmosphere and make your palette shine by adding plenty of candlelight to your décor for a winter-inspired ambience. There may be a chill in the air, but that doesn’t mean you can’t embrace the outdoors during your big day. Think eucalyptus, waxflower and pine as key foliage to bring the outside into your styling. Plus, if your chosen venue has an outdoor space such as a courtyard or garden area, why not transform it into an al-fresco hub for your guests with twinkling fairylights, comfy seating and thick blankets, not to mention a few heat lamps or even a firepit? Serve a hot reception drink such as mulled wine or Bailey’s hot chocolate in your very own wedding-day winter wonderland. 52
ASK THE EXPERTS
THE ICING ON THE CAKE
YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding editor Kelly Andrews says: Winter is an incredible time of year to host a wedding, but just like the summer brings with it its very own set of challenges and considerations. Here are just a few things to bear in mind... •Dress for the weather. If you’re planning to pop outside for a photo or to make sure you’re prepared. Invest in a super-cute bridal bolero or cape to cover your shoulders, and take a pair of cosy boots to slip into – you don’t want to ruin those Jimmy Choo heels in the mud! •Don’t forget the beauty prep. Both the central heating and chill in the air will play havoc with your skin. Be sure to pack a hydrating mist for a spritz during the day and a lip balm to keep that pout kissably soft. •Photography. Work with your photographer ahead of time to discuss potential backdrops for your couple shots and devise a plan A and B in case the weather doesn’t allow you get outside. They’ll have the correct lighting and techniques required for fab interior shots, so fear not. But armed with your date, ask potentials for examples of their nighttime and indoor work. Remember, even if it’s dry timing is everything. •Start early. It’s a good idea to plan your ceremony for slightly earlier in the day in order to maximise daylight. Particularly on dull days, a 3pm ceremony could seem like twilight “I dos” even if that’s not what you had in mind. •Opt for an all-in-one venue. To save you and your guests braving the rain, or indeed snow, choose a venue that can host your entire day from ceremony to celebrations. Everyone can stay cosy all day and there’s no need to worry about hairdos going astray or dresses becoming bedraggled. •Christmas decs. It’s a good idea to ask your venue whether they’re likely to have their own Christmas decorations up at the time of your wedding. If so, see if you can get an idea of what they’ve got planned as they may or may not coordinate with your own styling vision.
www.andrewcockerill.com
Clare Deary at Cake On The Lake (www.cakeonthelake.com) says: There are so many ways to bring an elegant winter vibe to your wedding cake. Here are some ideas to get you started... •Dark and metallic colours are popular options for winter wedding cakes, since they embrace the festive, cosy vibe of the season. Navy blue, purple, silver, copper and gold are all gorgeous options especially if you’re having a formal or glamour-themed wedding. Adding metallic accents such as silver or gold leaf can give your cake an elegant touch. You can also use metallic cake toppers or ribbon to add some sparkle alongside sultry dark colours to complement. •A white wedding cake offers a stylish, flawless look and is a classic option that’s perfect all year long. An all-white design is the ideal representation of class, just like crisp white snow. It could even be accompanied by a romantic red and green floral design for a further seasonal twist. •Incorporating winter florals such as ivy, holly, pine cones and berries can add a touch of elegance to your big-day bake. You can also use dried flowers or white blooms such as roses or lilies to create a snowy effect with pearls, just like drops of snow. •Deep, dark green is an amazing winter wedding colour choice. It can look naturally rustic alone, or accompanied by golden accents its simply divine! •Figs are often seen in Christmas and winter recipes, so they’re a natural choice for winter bakes. Teamed with thistles and blackberries on a naked cake they bring the décor a wintry vibe. •A simple ivy-covered rustic wedding cake will work well with any décor, especially if you’re planning a whimsical wedding. Place on a log slice for added effect.
WINTER WARMER Alicia Cox from Talhenbont Hall (https://talhenbonthall.co.uk) says: It all starts with the perfect venue. During the winter, the days are short and the nights are long, so it’s always worth choosing somewhere that’s truly magical during the day and night. Selecting a venue with oodles of charm, characterful spaces and enchanting grounds will provide the perfect start to planning that elegant winter wonderland. To create an elegant winter vibe, choosing your colour scheme will be the next big step. You may want that modern look and may opt for cleaner colours, white with a hint of emerald green to delight your guests. Alternatively, why not take the season literally and bring that festive cheer with emerald greens, ruby reds and purples? These are always firm favourites bringing a touch of warmth to any special day. A true winter wonderland wouldn’t be complete without plenty of sparkle and lights. Choosing the right lighting is just as important as your choice of flowers for example, particularly with those shorter days the proper illumination helps to tie your day together. Don’t forget those candles! Candlelight will give you that sought after romantic, warm, cosy feel. Simply gorgeous white trees, crystal garlands, wreaths, Christmas trees, and frosted decorations are but a few styling options to choose from to bring your winter wedding to life. Why not delight your guests with a few cosy touches too, such as making soft, fluffy blankets available in your colour scheme? And when choosing your venue, don’t forget to look out for those real open fires. 53

INTERVIEW
Mane ATTRACTION
Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be
M
odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.
People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.
How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.
What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding
process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
WINTER WARMER How can I give my make-up look a wintry twist? Cassie McClymont from Cassie M Bridal (www.cassiem.co.uk) says: “My twist on a wintry makeup look would be to use warmer tones when it comes to eyeshadows, blush and lips, just to warm up the face slightly in wintry months when complexions can be paler and the outside weather much darker. Using warmer autumnal tones can look very flattering, and I’m a massive fan of a bold red lip in the winter. It brings a beautiful wintry vibe to a gorgeous bridal look.
OH, THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL!
Getty Images
We’re getting married at Christmas and I really want to be able to get outside for some photographs. What can I wear to keep me warm and complement my gown? Ali Tyrer at Blue & Sixpence (www.blueandsixpence.co.uk) says: There are so many ways to accessorise for your outdoor photos, so don’t assume your only option is a faux-fur wrap – think outside the box. Capes are very popular options. Velvet is both luxurious and warm, and it needn’t match your gown. Maybe you could choose one to complement your colour scheme instead? All sorts of jackets (vintage, customised, modern, borrowed or blue) can set a gown off, too. A nod to the festive season might be your thing. So, how about a seasonally-inspired accessory? I’m thinking something red, trimmed with white, along the lines of Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen’s finale costumes in White Christmas – what could be more fab? Of course, you could go all out and incorporate all sorts of winter warmers into your outdoorsy photo shoot. We’re thinking fur-lined boots, scarves, gloves, wellies, ear-muffs, hand-warmers, or maybe keep those fleece-lined leggings and thermals under wraps beneath your gown? Don’t just think about wearables, perhaps source a fantastic faux-fur rug if you’re in a car or carriage. How about other types of photo opps? Does your venue allow fires outdoors? A firepit can keep the hot coals safely contained while giving off loads of heat, and it looks fantastic. Maybe a more rustic, open fire is more your thing? Just imagine toasting marshmallows on your wedding day. Whatever you choose, we’re sure you’ll look sensational! 71

Beauty queen
We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty
H
annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.
Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 74
There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.
INTERVIEW
How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.
What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin
The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 75
Well grounded If wedding planning stress is getting the better of you, take this time-out with Ground Wellbeing’s Peigin Crowley
A
n award-winning spa consultant Peigin Crowley has spent more than 20 years crafting distinctive and transformative wellness products and treats for fivestar luxury properties. But in 2020, her attention shifted to the home. Experiencing the devastating impacts of stress, burnout, loss of identity and disconnection from the natural world, she embarked on a quest to create products and at-home rituals that could easily be incorporated into a daily self-care routine. Today her brand, Ground Wellbeing, continues to grow, focusing on craft and quality over quantity, sustainable business practices and the promotion of accessible and intuitive self-care for all. Committed to the power of touch, the brand’s rituals are created by Peigin to deliver carefully developed massage treatments through her years of work as an aromatherapist, where she gained a deeper sense of empathy, compassion and understanding. She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.
sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.
TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.
BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

The Italian dream
Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village
F
or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.
on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.
RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY
The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.
Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.
FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.
LOOKING FOR MORE?
Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.
For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.
DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my

As I visited on a Sunday, Yu, the Retreat’s pan-Asian restaurant wasn’t open, but I’ll definitely be back to experience the Japanese fine dining establishment with a reputation not to be ignored! I finished my stay with a full body ‘Made for You’ massage at the Signet Spa. My therapist was able to locate and relax my pressure points leaving me recharged and well cared for. Utter bliss.

tep into luxury at The Retreat, Elcot Park. Since its grand opening in June 2022 it has won many accolades including Britain’s Best Hotel by The Times and the Sunday Times, topping their list of the Top 100 Places to Stay in the UK. So, it was only right for us to check it out for our couples. Located between Newbury and Hungerford, this 18th-century country house hotel & spa is the perfect spot to unwind pre- or post-wedding whether you want a cocktail aside the heated outdoor swimming pool; or are ready to don your hiking boots and clear your mind on the close-by North Wessex Downs. You’re so warmly welcomed as soon as you enter the lobby lounge. Waiting at the reception desk was a lovely couple sipping a glass of wine checking in – yes you get a glass of the good stuff on arrival - and who was at their feet but two four-legged friends. Living the life of Riley, these pampered pooches were also looking forward to their stay in one of the several dog-friendly rooms. They even get a doggie welcome pack on arrival! With a crisp rosé in hand, I check into the Sutton Suite. An interior designer’s dream, sunlight pours into the room which overlooks the surrounding countryside. It’s warm and inviting with whimsy wallpaper, mix-match plush textiles and the prime centrepiece, the stunning copper roll top bath, is just waiting to be enjoyed. With a private mini bar, as well as raiding rights to the pantry (yes, there’s a pantry where you can help yourselves to snacks and drinks!), you’re guaranteed to switch off, unwind and feel truly spoilt. When it comes to food and drink, 1772 Brasserie offers a fine choice of contemporary dishes for all tastes. I chose crispy chilli squid followed by Berkshire lamb rump, cooked to perfection.
