Festive cheer J

ust like that, it’s the end of another year. I don’t know about you, but the older I get, the quicker time seems to fly by. It seems like only yesterday that I was writing about my upcoming wedding, and here we are over a year later. If you’ve recently become engaged and the wedding feels like it’s forever away, trust me, it will be here before you know it. The best piece of advice I can offer is to enjoy the planning process and celebrate the small things. If you’ve said yes to the dress or booked that special venue that you’ve had your eye on, take the time to celebrate – go out on a date, treat yourselves, and make a scrapbook of those key moments. Once the wedding is over, you’ll love having those memories to look back on. It’s been wonderful seeing the wedding industry flourish again this year. I’ve loved seeing your nuptials, businesses beginning to return to normal, and new companies opening their doors, so to celebrate and end the year with a bang, we’ve gone all out with an issue full of must-see venues, photography and wedding dresses.

51 Meet the finalists from this year’s Welsh National Wedding Awards.

The Holiday Inn Cardiff City Centre has unveiled a £500,000 refurbishment that has transformed its public spaces. The stylish new open lobby, designed to provide guests with one multi-faceted public space to eat, meet, relax, socialise, and work as they choose, will revolutionise the way guests stay at the Cardiff hotel. The traditionally separate zones of a reception, lobby, bar, lounge, restaurant, and business centre have been merged into one cohesive space. Key new features include free high-speed Wi-Fi, an all day dining menu, a living-room-style media lounge with comfy seating, games, magazines, and TVs, and an E-Bar where guests can relax. Richard Platts, the general manager for the Holiday Inn Cardiff City Centre, commented: “I’m thrilled to welcome guests to our new open lobby space. Already, we can see how guests are ‘living’ differently at the hotel and making full use of every new zone, which is exactly what we wanted with this investment. There are so many options and areas to plug in or switch off that our business and travel guests will love what we’ve done. The new open lobby will also appeal to local Cardiff residents and networking groups, as well as families of Welsh rugby players and past rugby stars who often call in when Wales play at home. We are well equipped to host everybody on all occasions.” Check out www.lghhm.com for more information. 9

Llantilio House is a listed 18th-century farmhouse in a picturesque 300acre farm in Monmouthshire. The venue has been refurbished in the most sustainable way possible, with ground-source heating throughout and great care taken to use traditional, environmentally friendly materials and wool insulation. Owners Lottie and George were keen to honour the venue’s original features in the re-development. Lottie’s background as a film draughtsman and the interconnectedness of the venue have resulted in a relaxed and contemporary feel throughout. Consisting of a courtyard with two interlinking barns, Llantilio House has a granary, a farmhouse with front and back gardens, an additional courtyard with a heated (natural) pool, and two outbuildings. There is a large courtyard and grounds overlooking the river Trothy valley, which is in the process of being restored to a wildflower meadow via a grant from Natural Resources Wales. Made up of a mixture of pasture and woodland, the property provides a picturesque location for retreats and events. Inspired by permaculture design, the farming system used at Three Pools is being converted to balance high-quality food production with a beautiful landscape in harmony with nature. There’s a Georgian farmhouse on-site, Medieval stone barns, diverse woodland, pasture meadows, tranquil pools, and hilltop views, meaning there are plenty of places both inside and outside to explore and take those all-important photographs.

Three Pools has a fully licensed bar, and the wedding team will assist with the planning, setting up, licensing and packing down of events, so you can relax knowing everything is taken care of. YOU ARE MY

REAL WEDDINGS

Rachel and Ghandi opted for a sunflower-themed wedding at The Great House Hotel and Restaurant Images courtesy of Daniel Brown Photography

R

achel and Ghandi met at a friend’s party. “At the party, Ghandi asked how my son was doing (from a previous marriage), and the rest is history,” says Rachel. “There’s a 17year age gap between us, which on paper shouldn’t work, but as Ghandi says, he’s Peter Pan and has never grown up, so that helps! We spent two years living 230 miles apart and only seeing each other every other weekend until Ghandi made the commitment to close his business, sell his house, and move to Wales.” The happy couple had been together for more than 10 years when Ghandi popped the question. “It was my grandmother’s 92nd birthday, and all of the family were at her house,” shares the bride. “As we were about to leave, Ghandi asked to take a family photo, so we all huddled together when he paused and began showing us a magic trick. He pulled out a black cable tie and pliers and was messing around with it before getting down on one

knee and asking me to marry him. It was an absolute surprise, and I didn’t believe him at first and didn’t stop crying. My mum had to prompt me to answer! The cable tie engagement ring lasted a week before it was replaced with a beautiful diamond ring.” The happy couple hosted their big day at The Great House Hotel and Restaurant. “We wanted a venue that had rooms as Ghandi’s friends and family were travelling from Bedford,” explains Rachel. “The hotel is actually less than half a mile from our house, but we’d never visited. From the moment we walked through the courtyard, we knew that it was the venue for us. It has so much character, was intimate yet roomy, and the fact that we had exclusive use on the day made it a winner in our eyes.” Read on to see some of Rachel’s favourite moments from their big day... 29

The staff at The Great House Hotel and Restaurant were amazing. A big shout out to Eleanor and the team; they went above and beyond to the point that we didn’t even notice them there! They did all the set-up and turn-around of the room without us having to do anything, and it was perfect every time.

Our favours were mini jars of honey and wildflower seeds.

For the table plan, we created a handmade frame with hanging pieces of paper that were removed and a canvas added for the guests to sign instead of a guest book in the evening.

The centrepieces were wooden logs decorated with honey pots, glass candle holders, and honeycomb vases filled with sunflowers.

Papillon Coffee House provided our three-tiered buttercream cake. It was made up of three different flavours: lemon drizzle, chocolate orange, and coconut. 30

The chefs at The Great House Hotel and Restaurant created amazing food for the evening before and breakfast for guests who stayed the night. The wedding breakfast meal was outstanding, and all of our guests commented on how good it was. The venue also organised for Bang-On Brewery to create personalised labels for the beer bottles, which was such a lovely touch.

REAL WEDDINGS

My dress was made-to-measure by Pink Butterfly Brides, who I’d seen on The Wedding Dress Shop on BBC One Wales. I said if I ever got married again, I’d go there, as it looked so much fun. I’m obsessed with shoes and knew I had to get married in Louboutin’s, so I needed a dress that would show off the shoes, which is why I went with a dipped hem ivory dress. I ended up with two pairs of Louboutin’s: heels for the day and trainers for the night.

As part of the wedding package with The Great House Hotel and Restaurant, we had a DJ, but we also hired a singer called Blobbie Williams, which nobody knew about. We’d seen him a few years ago and thought he was amazing; he’s a Robbie Williams tribute but brings a comedy element to the act.

Seeing Ghandi in his military uniform for the first time and the distance that guest had travelled to be with us on our day was so special. This was the first time in two years that we’d seen a lot of the guests due to the pandemic, so we tried to make sure that everyone had a day to remember.

I was so chilled out and relaxed on the morning of the wedding with no nerves whatsoever; I just knew it was right. Ghandi, on the other hand, was anxious as he wanted to make sure everything was perfect for me.

The groomsmen wore three-piece navy suites and yellow ties from Suit Hire Bridgend. I thought Ghandi was wearing the same after being measured, but little did I know that he’d gotten permission to wear his regimental number one dress, which was a surprise to me on the day.

During Ghandi’s speech, he welcomed the guests to Wales and informed them that Wales was for the Welsh Dragon. He then timely glanced at my mum which had the whole room in laughter. 31

ROMANCE

Sam and Beth opted for a boho-themed celebration at Gileston Manor Images courtesy of Lewis Fackrell Photography

REAL WEDDINGS

S

am and Beth met in 2013 while they were both working part-time at Homebase. “I worked on the customer service desk, and Beth was on the shop floor,” says Sam. “I was newly ‘out’ in the LBGT world and noticed Beth during one of our shifts. Beth was quiet and no one knew her name, so I plucked up the courage to go over and invite her on a night out with the girls. Afterwards, Beth asked me on a date to walk her dog, and the rest is history. I loved Beth’s confidence and thought she was really cool; we had fun together from the very beginning.” Beth proposed on a beach on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides in August 2020. “It was a complete surprise,” shares Sam. “We had just spent the first COVID lockdown converting our van into a DIY camper, so we booked to go away to the Outer Hebrides for two weeks for the van’s first major outing. Beth had been adamant up until this point that marriage wasn’t on the cards yet, but looking back, she had been acting quite strange and suspicious in the lead up to our trip. On the second day, Beth started asking me questions like, ‘What’s your favourite sunrise or sunset?’ and ‘What’s been your favourite beach so far?’ And lo and behold, the following morning, we got up at sunrise and made our way to a beach on Vatersay. It was the windiest day of the entire holiday, and our dog jumped through a barbed wire fence on the way to the beach, but it was still beautiful. Beth originally asked me to be her girlfriend in 2014 using a photo that she’d drawn, so while we were sitting on the sand watching the sunrise, Beth gave me a photo that she’d drawn of her proposing to me. She then pulled a ring out of her pocket and asked me to marry her!”

SETTING THE SCENE “We knew we wanted an outdoor wedding but were struggling to find anywhere that felt right,” explains Sam. “We came across Gileston Manor by chance and instantly loved that we could get married outside but have the luxury of the manor house for accommodation. The accommodation was beautifully quirky and each room had a different design. It was also dog-friendly, which was a big must for us, as our golden retriever was our ring bearer! “Beth and I decorated the space with a wooden arch, which we used to hang a neon ‘The Woolleys’ sign,” continues Sam. “We used vintage-style rugs as decoration beneath the table, repurposing them as a dancefloor for the evening. We had one long table with seats on either side and we sat in the centre in peacock chairs from The Roaming Caravan Co surrounded by our family and closest friends. To decorate the table, we used a teal table runner covered in tall black candlesticks, vintage ale and glass beer bottles with dried flowers in them. Above the table, we opted for large macramé lanterns and dried flowers hanging from the ceiling. Jan Lima Flowers provided all the flowers for the day. They were a mixture of fresh and dried flowers with blues, greens, and white daisies; they were perfect and exactly what we wanted.” For their favours, the happy couple gave their guests small bottles of Kin Toffee Vodka, as it’s one of their favourites. Alongside the favours were place names that the couple made themselves. “We cross-stitched each guest name onto an oval frame,” recalls Sam. “Each was unique, and everyone was able to take them home with them. We also handmade napkin holders using a wooden ring and macramé decorations.” For their cake, Sam and Beth opted for a two-tiered, semi-naked drip design from The Vale Cake Boutique. “The top tier was white chocolate and raspberry, and the bottom tier was lemon and blueberry,” reveals Sam. “We had cake toppers of a lion and a giraffe wearing veils and eucalyptus decorating the cake and stand. We also had towers of glazed doughnuts surrounding the cake. Cleverchefs provided the sit-down meal, which was fantastic. We gave our guests the option of beef or chicken for the main course and sticky toffee pudding or lemon posset for dessert.” 35

We offer a carefully selected range of beautiful gowns form leading bridal designers. From the moment you walk through the door you will have our undivided attention, with the entire bridal boutique reserved exclusively for you. Book your appointment today.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

REAL WEDDINGS

Sam wore an Essense of Australia dress called D3023 with a light pink undergown, which she purchased from Laura May Bridal. “I was instantly drawn to Essense of Australia’s dresses when I started looking,” adds Sam. “The dress I chose was not at all what I was expecting to wear, but I liked the plunging neckline, and both my mum and nan wore pink on their wedding day, so that was a nice touch. I accessorised with a bracelet from my parents, a necklace and earrings that were a present from Beth on the day, and my great-gran’s wedding ring.” Beth chose a dress by Rachel Burgess named Isla. “The underdress was ivory, with a lace layer over the top covered in embroidery daisies,” says Beth. “I loved my dress and knew straight away when I tried it on that it was the one. I wore a necklace and earrings that were a present from Sam on the morning of the wedding. My mam also sewed a ring from my grandmother and a locket from my other grandmother to the underside of my dress, using a blue ribbon as my something old, borrowed, and blue.” The couple had six people in their wedding party. “I had three bridesmaids, and Beth had her sister as her maid-of-honour and two bridesmen,” shares Sam. “Our bridesmaids and maid-of-honour wore dresses from Timeless Elegance Bridal in hunter green, and the two bridesmen opted for sage green tweed three-piece suits from Moss Bros.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had the Aderyn String Quartet play in the walled garden during the ceremony and post-ceremony, which we kept a surprise from everyone until the day,” explains Sam. “We also had a range of garden games to entertain guests between the ceremony and reception. All the guests got stuck into the games, with the women even taking their shoes off for better leverage in tug of war! There were multiple space hopper races and lots of falls captured on camera. We also had a beer pong table set up in the reception area. In the evening, we had a band called The Wildcards, who were great, and a photo booth for lots of drunken pictures. We also had a caravan bar from Bars of Distinction serving drinks all night.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “We felt excited and anxious, but overall very happy,” recalls Sam. “We spent the morning getting ready separately and were anxiously waiting to see each other the entire time. We wanted to be ‘traditional’ and not see each other before the ceremony, and we’re happy that we did that, but deep down, we would have loved to have gotten ready together! “Our favourite and most memorable moment was our ‘first touch’,” adds Sam. “We didn’t want to do a first look, but we knew we’d want to connect somehow before we walked down the aisle. We came outside a few minutes before the ceremony began, and with the help of some of our family and our photographer, we held hands around the corner of a wall. It was the most peaceful and grounding moment of the entire day and made us both incredibly emotional.” Sam and Beth took part in a space hopper race, which turned out to be more eventful than they originally planned. “The race was neck and neck until the very end, where Beth fell off and kicked the space hopper in disappointment,” says Sam. “The space hopper bounced off a pole and flew back, hitting Beth square in the face! “It was so special that we had Riley, our dog, with us all day,” continues Sam. “Riley was the ring bearer and spent the day running around the walled garden. She does everything with us, so it was important that she was there with us for our special day. The speeches were also all very special. Beth, both dad’s and the maid-of-honour all gave speeches, and the maid-of-honour even turned hers into a drinking game!”

HONEYMOON “I planned our honeymoons,” shares Sam. “We went to St. Ives for five days and stayed in a lovely beach-side cottage, spending the week eating pasties, drinking and shopping. We then went to Mauritius for two weeks, which was absolutely beautiful and so relaxing.” 37

Gone are the days when the only option was to bin them or air-dry them; there are now lots of ways flowers can be preserved. Encapsulated Memories is a small business in Llanharan offering flower preservation. The owner, Emma Cross, tells us more: “My heart

LOCAL INSPIRATION Cakes Especially offers delicious wedding cakes across South Wales. Owner Jenny Leeb-Du Toit tells us about her company: “I’ve always loved baking and making sweet treats. It was my go-to activity when I was growing up, and I learned from my mistakes and had fun in the process. I was quite a proficient baker by the time I left school. I practiced for friends and family for years and built up my decorating skills. I was a laboratory scientist for a few years, and I find that baking is a scientific process – just much more fun! I enrolled in decorating courses, which led me to open my own business and teach a class in Abergavenny. My favourite thing in the world is making wedding cakes, from meeting clients right through to the design and set-up. “I offer tastings, consultations on certain days, and postal deliveries if required. Ring, message, or email to get booked in. We can discuss and decide on all the design details, flavour choices, etc. After that, you can relax, knowing it’s all in hand, and arrive at your wedding venue on the day to find your dream bake waiting for you.”

Choosing your photographer is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your wedding. The first thing you should do is decide on a style that you like. There are plenty of photographers out there, and each one has a different style; you’ll need to narrow it down to what you like and don’t like. Some photographers prefer to take relaxed, documentary-style pictures that are captured in an unobstructive manner with limited group and posed shots. While others have a more traditional style with more posed snaps. Our top tip is to work out what feels right for you and fits the vibe of your big day.

EXPERT ADVICE

www.facebook.com/danielbrownphotography

JUST ONE SLICE

What wedding cake trends will be popular in 2024? Vintage-style cakes were extremely popular in 2023, and we see this trend continuing with pearlescent details and lace decorations. Flavourwise, we will see Victoria sponge, chocolate, salted caramel, chocolate orange, carrot, lemon, and red velvet continue to be on-trend. Here at Cake Me Away, we offer dairy-free and vegan options, with a choice of over-the-phone and face-to-face consultations available.

PLAN AND PLAN SOME MORE What are your top planning tips? Allocate start and finish times for each key event of the day and allow time for overruns. The most important thing is to forget about everybody else on the day and enjoy yourselves. Whatever happens, you need to take it in your stride. Don’t dwell on minor mishaps, but laugh at them. Never lose sight of the reason you are here: to become a married couple. There is an order to the wedding ceremony, including how and when the guests should be seated and in what order your guests, bridesmaids, and you should enter the ceremony room. Have music playing on a

decent stereo during the 30 minutes or so it takes for all your guests to arrive and be seated in an orderly manner. The procession often starts 10 minutes or so late (as is the fashion) but should still have a set time. Decide who is standing where and draw up the order and location of the bride, groom, and their respective ‘attendants’. Stay organised and understand what happens when and what you need to get done in a timely fashion to ensure you aren’t stressed on the day. The team at Craig Y Nos Castle www.craigynoscastleweddings.com 59

LOVE AT FIRST BITE Winter weddings are a great excuse to bring comfort food into your menu. Greet your guests with mulled wine or spiced cider alongside your fizz and hot canapés. Why not incorporate seasonal ingredients, like game? Thai-spiced partridge satay and mini venison pies with port gel are delicious. The first course should be something light and pretty; citrus-cured salmon and gin are always winners. For the main course, rich flavours are a must; slow-cooked meats braised with aromats served sharing style with bowls of hot sides would be my pick. Desserts should be decadent and definitely involve chocolate! If you’re treating your guests to evening food, keep it simple with something like loaded fries. Pick some funky toppings, so there’s something for everyone; our hoisin duck with pickled chilli, scallions, and sesame are always popular. Or why not finish the night with a beautifully curated cheese station? Everyone loves cheese. Tallulah De Vaux www.tallulahand.co

It goes without saying that if you’re having a December wedding, you either want to embrace the Christmas association or hold it at arms’ length. If you love Christmas, it will be essential that you let your DJ know this and mention your favourite festive songs on your request list. Tell them about any tunes that you dislike for a banned list. The music performed at your wedding will connect you with memories for years to come, so it might be a good idea to have a few newer Christmas songs that you will associate with your wedding instead of past Christmases. A good mobile DJ should be able to provide customised lighting to make your theme a feature. This might be stars, snowflakes, or specific colours. Other ideas to consider are carol singers with lanterns for the drinks reception. You could also hire or arrange for one of the wedding party to dress as Santa to hand out wedding favours and give any gifts to your wedding party. If you’re having a selfie wizard or photo booth, confirm with the supplier that they have Christmas-associated props and/or overlays for printing. HELLO PETAL We are on a tight budget but still want beautiful stand-out flowers on our big day. Do you have any ideas on how we can save money? The cost of fresh wedding flowers can be a big expense, and with the cost of living rising, careful planning is key. Consider artificial flowers; these are realistic-looking, and you can still get the floral style and design you want for your big day without the large price tag. Plus, you don’t have to worry about age damage or dress stains; they are allergen-free and can last forever as home décor after the wedding day. Repurpose and re-use your venue decorations. It takes a lot of work to create the arrangements to dress your venue, so using your flowers in a two-area set-up will help stretch your budget. Ask your venue stylist, coordinator, or a trusted family member to move items from the ceremony room to the reception area during the break. For example, pew end flowers can be reused as table centrepieces and registrar table displays can be moved to the top table. Dried flowers can be added to faux versions. This works well for modern and boho-themed weddings, and these bouquets also have a longer shelf life than fresh options.

STYLED SHOOT

P

hotographer Dan Houghton and florist Faith Ward from Lux Blossom & Co worked together to create this modern styled shoot. “We kept seeing so many wild and outlandish ideas, which we thought couples wouldn’t connect with,” explains Dan. “We wanted to create a shoot that brought together a simple palette of pastels and summer vibes. We reached out to St Mellons Country Club, as their aesthetic matched the mood we wanted to create. We wanted couples to feel like they don’t need to break the bank to get a stylish look for their day.” Vicky from Hwyl Ceremonies created a ceremony for Hannah and James to celebrate their love and to affirm the promises they made on their wedding day. “We included a Celtic Hand Blessing; the ancient Celtic ritual symbolises the binding of two lives by placing ribbons or materials over the couple’s hands,” adds Dan. “Traditionally, cords or ribbons are used and are weaved around the couple’s hands. Leading the hand blessing, Vicky explained the sentiments and why the materials of gold, white, and teal were chosen for their symbolic and sentimental meaning to the couple. After we tied the ribbons, the couple held the materials high above their heads and tied them as tight as they could, literally tying the knot. “Faith created huge statement floral pieces to really make the day stand out,” continues Dan. “She hand-picked peonies, delphiniums to give the arrangements height, fabulous garden roses, and Nigella to match the theme of the shoot.” 63

We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty

H

annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.

Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 78

There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.

INTERVIEW

How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.

What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin

The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 79

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

CLASSIC ELEGANCE What wedding jewellery would you suggest for a timeless look? The choice of what a bride wears down the aisle is one that’s deeply personal and unique. However, it’s always a safe bet to go for a timeless, versatile look that is guaranteed to look stunning in 30 years’ time. Pearls are the epitome of elegance and sophistication, making them a perfect choice for a bride looking to elevate her look. The creamy white hues of pearls make them a versatile stone that will fit perfectly into any colour scheme and add a premium snow-like quality to any winter bride’s outfit. Pearls have undoubtedly had the glow-up of the year and have become the wedding jewellery trend of the moment, with celebs like Barbara Palvin and Sofia Richie-Grainge choosing the timeless look for their big days. Less is always more with wedding jewellery, and pearls embody the timeless vintage trend that’s everywhere this wedding season. The circular fashion movement has brought pearl accessories right back to the top of every bride’s wish list, and we can definitely see why. Ben Roberts – Managing director of Clogau www.clogau.co.uk 80

BRIDAL GLOW I have very dry skin, which tends to make my foundation look like it has been caked on rather than smoothly applied. How can I ensure my wedding look is flawless? Dry skin is by far the hardest to apply make-up to while creating a flawless look. For that reason, I always talk to my brides about how to prepare their skin before their wedding day as best they can. Firstly, I advise them to drink lots of water in the weeks and months leading up to their wedding. Water flushes out toxins, moisturises, and helps to plump the skin. Secondly, use good skincare products that are pH-balanced. Skin has a pH of 5.5, and it is important if you want to rebalance it to use products that aren’t going to stress it further and let it do its job and heal itself. Aloe vera has a natural pH of 5.5; it’s anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. It contains amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. For those reasons, it’s amazing for the skin and helps with rebalancing conditions such as dryness, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and combination skin. Thirdly, get into a good routine. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser every day, preferably pH-balanced, and exfoliate once a week. Using an exfoliative cleanser will remove any dead cells, which then allows moisturisation to penetrate the skin rather than it sitting on top of the dead cells, which will eventually just fall off. Removing these cells will allow the skin to have the glow that we all look for. Use the three levels of moisturisation: tone to close pores and reset the skin after cleansing; use a serum to give a moisturising layer that penetrates into the deep layers of skin; and moisturise to form a final layer to protect it from the day’s pollution. I recommend the Forever-Living Sonya Range, which is specifically developed for combination skin and redness. This has amazing rebalancing and anti-inflammatory properties. Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Serum, and her new Magic Water Cream Moisturiser, which gives 100 hours of hydration, are also great products. Emma Locke www.makeuplocker.com

Mane ATTRACTION

Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be

M

odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.

People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.

How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.

What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding

process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

SEYCHELLES

Hilton’s signature hotel brand is set to open its first resort in the Seychelles. Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island lies just over 130 kilometres south of Mahé on a pristine atoll fringed by palm forests and protected by its own lagoon and coral reef. Much of Platte Island’s surrounding scenery remains untouched, meaning guests are likely to see native Hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, manta rays, and whale sharks. The resort will be home to 50 seafront villas, all equipped with private pools and personal concierges. For more information, visit www.hilton.com/en/brands/waldorf-astoria

Sitatunga Private Island is a new water-based safari camp in the upper reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Built on a raised, wrap-around private deck, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate four adults in two private suites. Constructed almost entirely of recycled materials, the camp offers couples a ‘slow safari’ that is as sustainable as it is luxurious. The suites come complete with an indoor lounge, bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas, as well as a private pool with views over the lagoon. Dereck Joubert, the CEO of Great Plains, tells us: “Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the ecodesign boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day.” Discover more about Sitatunga Private Island and its offerings at www.greatplainsconservation.com/safari/sitatunga-private-island

The Italian dream

Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village

F

or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.

on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.

RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY

The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.

Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.

FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.

LOOKING FOR MORE?

Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.

For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.

DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my

Since its grand opening in June 2022 it has won many accolades including Britain’s Best Hotel by The Times and the Sunday Times, topping their list of the Top 100 Places to Stay in the UK. So, it was only right for us to check it out for our couples. Located between Newbury and Hungerford, this 18th-century country house hotel & spa is the perfect spot to unwind pre- or post-wedding whether you want a cocktail aside the heated outdoor swimming pool; or are ready to don your hiking boots and clear your mind on the close-by North Wessex Downs. You’re so warmly welcomed as soon as you enter the lobby lounge. Waiting at the reception desk was a lovely couple sipping a glass of wine checking in – yes you get a glass of the good stuff on arrival - and who was at their feet but two four-legged friends. Living the life of Riley, these pampered pooches were also looking forward to their stay in one of the several dog-friendly rooms. They even get a doggie welcome pack on arrival! With a crisp rosé in hand, I check into the Sutton Suite. An interior designer’s dream, sunlight pours into the room which overlooks the surrounding countryside. It’s warm and inviting with whimsy wallpaper, mix-match plush textiles and the prime centrepiece, the stunning copper roll top bath, is just waiting to be enjoyed. With a private mini bar, as well as raiding rights to the pantry (yes, there’s a pantry where you can help yourselves to snacks and drinks!), you’re guaranteed to switch off, unwind and feel truly spoilt. When it comes to food and drink, 1772 Brasserie offers a fine choice of contemporary dishes for all tastes. I chose crispy chilli squid followed by Berkshire lamb rump, cooked to perfection.
