Iwas chuffed when the powers that be at KD Events & Publishing Towers approved my suggestion to run bride and groom, Louise and Dewar, along with their gorgeous boys, as our latest cover stars. Why?

It’s no longer the case of girl meets boy, girl marries boy, girl falls pregnant and so starts family life. These days it can be girl meets girl, or they meets them – and kids can come before or after your nuptials. That’s why I was keen to have an entire family on the November/December cover. Long gone is the notion that you have to marry the opposite sex – and that you should be in wedlock before having a child. At the end of the day, if you fall for your soulmate and have children before you get hitched, good on you! And if you decide having kids isn’t your bag, relax with your decision and be proud of it.

Now that I’ve got off my stool and had my say, it’s time to talk about our fantastic issue and all we’ve got in store for you over the next 100 pages. There’s Louise and Dewar’s fantastic wedding, of course, over on page 36 – if you like the thought of guys in kilts you’ll be in for a nice surprise! An Essex Wedding is pleased to announce the newest luxury wedding venue launching in your favourite county. Say hello to St Osyth Priory, now taking bookings for summer 2023 at the estate’s newly refurbished wedding venue, Darcy House.

The Wedding Barn at Old Hall is a beautiful Grade II listed barn which has recently been restored to its former glory. Historically, the venue was a working grain drying barn, and the exterior still retains remnants of its former life, giving the building a truly authentic feel.

The main body of the barn provides a picturesque wedding venue, with its original beams and fabulous high ceiling. A meadow directly in front –where the Bridal Boudoir Shepherd’s Hut resides – offers incredible views, while a paved courtyard connected to the back of the barn displays beautiful flowerbeds, plus an orchard full of apple trees, situated perfectly

for those golden hour shots.

Civil ceremonies take place within the barn where there are a number of layouts to choose from to create a space for the ceremony. If opting for a celebrant-led affair, you can choose any of The Wedding Barn’s outdoor spaces, with a maximum capacity of up to 120. Receptions are then held within the main body of the barn, surrounded by all the beautiful flint and beams. As well as a dance floor, there’s an in-house bar for your evening party, while couples who’ve previously married there particularly like the three chandelier hoops for some great photo opportunities.

Tuffon Hall’s 400 year old threshing barn, the Cellar Door, was converted in spring 2019 and comfortably accommodates up to 100 people seated, and 200 standing. Retaining as much of the barn’s heritage as possible, the venue still boasts old beams and traditional red brickwork, along with the original arrow slits which have been framed to add to the character. Underfloor ground source heating allows year-round use, while large glass windows on both sides let in as much light as possible, capturing

beautiful sunsets across the back lawn during the evenings.

Open air ceremonies in the Vineyard are available from June to September, when the vines are at their best. Here, up to 100 guests are seated on rustic benches, set out to mirror the shape of the cedar-wood gazebo. There’s also the Cellar Door lawn, where you can exchange vows at the top of the stone steps against the backdrop of the flint walls (capacity 100); under the magnificent rafters of the Cellar Door (capacity 100); or upstairs on the mezzanine level overlooking the main body of the barn (capacity 80). Winter’s Coming

At the heart of a walled estate and down a torch-lined sweeping drive you’ll find Braxted Park, a truly impressive setting for a winter wedding. What’s more, from mid-November Braxted undertakes a significant festive makeover as it heads into the winter months. Couples can take advantage of the world-class decor and theming put in place by the venue’s team for their Christmas season, with December weddings including ceiling chandeliers and drapes in the Pavilion, enhanced dancefloor lighting, and additional garden lights and flares.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to saying ‘I do’ at this venue, with many options for up to 170 guests. If a winter wedding’s not for you there’s also the option to tie the knot in the warmer months at

the heart of the walled garden, as your guests soak up the sun and floral scents dance on the breeze. Afterwards, host your reception for up to 350 in the Pavilion, with neutral décor so you can truly make it your own. The in-house catering team will create a spectacular menu for your special day, then, come evening, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system and huge dance floor ensure that you and your guests will enjoy yourselves long into the night.

Dating back as far as 1021, Down Hall’s grandiose stately home radiates a gorgeous country mansion charm perfect for your big day. Connected to the 19th century Italianate mansion house, the enhanced West Wing underwent a £1.2m refurbishment in 2019, creating a stand-alone space which caters for weddings for up to 220. Decorated in traditional heritage colours, with bright accents in classic country house-meets contemporary chic, the banqueting and ballrooms feature panoramic views of the beautiful gardens, creating the perfect backdrop for the most elegant of

ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and receptions.

Fully licensed for civil ceremonies and with a dedicated wedding space including a regal ballroom, Down Hall has a wonderful array of spacious rooms and lavish suites to house your guests. In the winter, roaring fireplaces, crystal chandeliers and gilded ceilings provide a cosy atmosphere, while the extensive gardens surrounding the hotel will provide a magical backdrop to your fairy-tale wedding. Paul and Jess’s relationship blossomed on a night shift at work

met Paul at Basildon University Hospital back in 2016. “Paul was a newly-qualified nurse, and I’m a radiographer,” says Jess. “Our initial attraction stemmed from the odd bit of small talk, but progressed when Paul bribed me with sweets and a doughnut while on a night shift! Having said that, I still avoided Paul’s requests for a date for around three months, until his birthday, when he guilt tripped me in to a trip to the cinema!”

Four years later, Paul popped the question on the Greek island of Santorini. “Our holiday had been delayed by six months due to Covid restrictions, so we were delighted just to be going away!” continues the bride. “It was the penultimate night of our trip, which fell on the 1st September. This might not mean much to most, but I hate odd numbers, so 1/9 was a date I never suspected a proposal would happen! Paul hired out a rooftop, getting down on one knee while we watched the sun set over the Caldera. There were flowers, Champagne and music, and it was absolutely perfect.”

The couple chose the 2nd April, 2022 for their wedding, saying ‘I do’ at Hutton Hall. Here, Jess tells us all about their incredible day…

With Covid numbers increasing and another lockdown looming, we saw 12 venues in a short space of time before booking Hutton Hall. We booked the 2nd April, 2022 – all even numbers! – and started planning immediately.

The cake was made of four levels, with vegan Oreo, salted caramel, vanilla and carrot cake flavours. We also had a small iced rabbit on the side of one of the tiers, in honour of our house rabbit, Tilly.

We decided to have a travel-themed wedding as we love to explore, incorporating this in our favours, table plans and place names. We try to visit far and obscure countries with our backpacks as much as we can!

The venue was already decorated beautifully, so we simply added a few spring-coloured artificial flowers. The bouquets consisted of David Austin patience roses, pale pink tulips, small pito, eucalyptus populus and eucalyptus cinerea.

Our food was fantastic, from the drinks’ canapés to our wedding breakfast of Caesar salad, chicken, bacon and leek pie with potatoes, and apple crumble and ice cream. For the evening, our guests also enjoyed mini burgers, fish and chip cones and falafel wraps.

My emotions were a rollercoaster on the morning of our wedding. I was anxious, nervous and excited, all rolled into one. I didn’t know what to do with myself! Thank goodness for Rescue Remedy and mint tea, as I couldn’t face the prosecco the bridesmaids were enjoying!

My five bridesmaids wore blush pink dresses from Wed2B, which were accessorised with a ‘can’t tie the knot without you’ silver bracelet. They picked their own hair styles on the morning of the wedding, so their looks expressed their own personalities.

I wanted the focus to be on the back of my dress, so opted for having my hair up – and I knew it would also last longer! When it came to my make-up, I asked for a natural but glam look, so I still looked like me – just better for the camera.

Our magician was one of the standout performers of the day, keeping our guests laughing with his skills and banter! He even stayed longer than expected as he was enjoying himself so much.

Throughout the meal and canapés we hired the pianist Bryan Edery. This man can play anything! He was very approachable, interacted with the crowd and kept all of our friends and family entertained.

My Romantica Tuscany gown was the fortieth dress I’d tried on! The attention to detail, stitching and design was beautiful, and I accessorised it with a pearl necklace with matching earrings worn by my mum on her wedding day.

Paul wore a three-piece navy suit with ivory tie and pocket square, complete with black shoes and pocket watch that I bought for him as an engagement present. He also had personalised stitching of our wedding day under his collar.

JESS’S TOP TIP

We hired a photobooth which was positioned in one of the rooms at Hutton Hall. This kept the guests entertained with the props available – which eventually came onto the dancefloor to add to the fun!

Nobody wanted our wedding to come to an end – so some didn’t! After the DJ had finished our ushers and some friends went clubbing! We can only imagine the looks they got turning up to a nightclub in wedding attire!

Our wedding was a wedding of all seasons, as we had sun, cloud, rain and snow in the space of four hours! Thankfully the sun came out during our canapés on the lawn, and it stayed dry whilst the evening guests were with us.

The evening party surprise was our saxophonist, Olly, who was amazing. He played lots of Ibiza classics alongside the DJ, making sure the dancefloor was packed. He also gave us an additional list to choose from so he could formulate his music to our wishes.

Louise and Dewar’s wedding involved kilts, bagpipes – and dodgy dancing on the tables

Louise met Dewar at an Annie Mac gig when they were there with mutual friends. “My dad owned a motorbike shop, and after chatting we realised Dewar had bought his first bike there before we even knew each other!” says Louise. “I loved that Dewar was confident, but not cocky, and he made me laugh all the time – plus he’s very easy on the eye! He says it was my hairstyle at the time that attracted him to me –which was red and shaved down one side! – as well as my quirky personality.”

Dewar proposed to Louise on her 30th birthday at Leigh on Sea restaurant, The Boatyard. “The waitress asked if we’d be happy to sit upstairs, which I thought was inconvenient as we had our youngest, Archer, in his pram. However, Dewar said it would be nice to look out at the sea, so we went upstairs – and there was nobody else there! I assumed it was just a quiet lunchtime, but after we sat down Dewar passed me his phone and told me to watch something. I’m a huge fan of the Netflix series, Selling Sunset, so was shocked to see a video from one of its stars, Maya, wishing me a happy birthday, and saying she hoped I said ‘yes’ to the proposal. At this point I looked up to see Dewar on one knee, alongside our four year-old son, Maddox. Dewar told Maddox to hand me the ring box – which he promptly threw at me! – and I opened it to see a stunning ring inside. I always said I wanted a low-key engagement, so this was perfect, and I was so overwhelmed. I of course then FaceTimed my mum and sister who were just as hysterical as me!”

The couple set the date for the 12th August, 2022, choosing Creeksea Place for their big day. Here, Louise tells us more about their amazing wedding…

ACCIDENTAL HERO

The couple originally discussed getting married in Devon, but soon realised it wasn’t logistically possible with all of their guests. “I found Creeksea Place by accident when I was looking for outdoor venues,” continues the bride. “I checked their website and saw they had availability for a twilight wedding in just four months, so my sister and I went to have a look around a week later. As soon as we pulled into the gates, I knew it was going to tick all the boxes, and it ended up being the first and only venue we looked at. The outdoor ceremony area which they call The Orchard is breathtaking, and it made for the most beautiful setting.”

Louise and Dewar fell in love with Creeksea Place not only as a venue, but also due to its attentive staff. “Our wedding planner Claire was incredible from the moment we made our booking, and we became friends throughout the process,” says Louise. “Michelle, another coordinator, and Jon-Paul, the owner, were also amazing on the day. Nothing was too much trouble, and they ensured our day went without a hitch – and that we both had a drink in hand at all times! I honestly cannot recommend Creeksea Place enough.”

GO FRESH

When planning their wedding the couple wanted everything to look fresh and natural, deciding on a white and green theme. “I own a wedding stationery business, so made all of our wedding invitations, order of the days and welcome sign,” continues Louise. “I used a Perspex sheet for the sign, with sage green paint and artificial flowers to give our guests an idea of our colour scheme as soon as they arrived. It was also important to us that our wedding was mainly about everyone having a great time celebrating our marriage, so our sign read ‘Let’s Get This Party Started’, which was very fitting!”

Louise and Dewar’s flowers and centrepieces also followed the same theme. “My bouquet consisted of white English roses, ranunculus, eucalyptus and clematis leaf,” continues the bride “My sister, who was my maid-of-honour, had the same flowers in a smaller bouquet, while my other bridesmaids had large gypsophila bouquets, with the flower

girls carrying lighter versions. Dewar and the groomsmen wore rose and gypsophila buttonholes, and all of our family members had a small buttonhole, too.”

When it came to dressing the tables, the couple decided to remember friends and family no longer with them. “We opted for simple milk bottles, filled with artificial roses, peonies and noble leaf sprays, before adding a name tag to each bottle of the friends and family we wished were still here, alongside their framed photograph.”

HEART ON MY SLEEVE

Louise didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a wedding dress she’d only wear for a few hours. “I went to my local Wed2B store with an open mind, with the dress I chose nothing like what I thought I’d buy!” she says. “It had beautiful lace detail on the train and body, and buttons all the way down the back. The shop assistants both cried when they saw me in it, so I knew it was the one! However, I really wanted sleeves, so I took my gown to an amazing local dressmaker I’ve used multiple times, who added incredibly beautiful organza, bishop-sleeves with cuffed, button up wrist detail. I couldn’t believe how perfect they were and how much of a difference they made, and the comments I had throughout the day were overwhelming.”

Louise’s bridesmaids wore sage green dresses to further complement the couple’s scheme. “I initially wanted white, but seeing as my gown was off-white it was impossible to find anything that looked quite right – plus it’s really hard to buy white bridesmaid dresses! In the end I looked on ASOS and found the dresses the girls wore, mixing two different styles together. They both had lovely waist wrap detail, and my bridesmaids all said they were really happy with how the outfits accentuated their shape. Our flower girl dresses were from Next, and featured lovely button and bow details at the back. They looked so cute and said they felt like Princesses for the day!”

ALL A KILT-ER

Dewar’s dad is Scottish, so it was important for the bride and groom to reflect this on the day. “Dewar loves to wear a kilt at any and every

opportunity – and I love to see him in one! – so when we set the date we knew straight away that the male wedding party would wear them,” says Louise. “We hired the kilts from Moss Bros, choosing Douglas Modern tartan as it went well with the bridesmaids’ dresses. They teamed them with dress shirts, waistcoats and jackets, along with bow ties, sock flashes and sporrans. I think they secretly all loved wearing them, even though a couple of the lads were worried about their legs being on show! Our page boys, however, didn’t want to put on a ‘skirt’, so wore navy chino shorts, shirts, tartan bow ties and braces.”

The nod to Dewar’s Scottish heritage didn’t end there, with the groom’s parents organising a bagpiper as a surprise for Dewar to keep in with tradition. “The photographer got some amazing shots of Dewar coming out of the manor house to see the bagpiper playing,” continues Louise. “It really added an extra special element for both us and our guests.”

HAVE YOUR FAKE AND EAT IT

It may come as a huge surprise to read that Louise and Dewar’s wedding cake was completely fake! “Dewar’s sister, Emma, makes cakes for a living, so when we discussed what kind of design we wanted Emma was worried about the cake melting and losing its shape. We weren’t planning on doing the traditional cake-cutting anyway, so she suggested we create a fake cake, instead, with cupcakes for guests to enjoy in the evening. It was a fantastic idea! Our sage green ‘cake’ tied in with the colour scheme and had a silk bow tied around it that trailed down onto the table. It looked beautiful, and no one could believe that it wasn’t real!”

The food Louise and Dewar’s friends and family enjoyed was also hugely important to the couple. “As we had a twilight wedding, we decided against a formal wedding breakfast, to go with our laid-back vibe,” says the bride. “We’ve been to multiple weddings in the past, and although the dinners are delicious, they can be a long affair, and we didn’t want to spend such a big chunk of time eating when there was socialising to be done! We decided on a street food van, with our guests enjoying burgers, sausages, skin-on fries and cheesey chips. We had tons of compliments saying how much they loved the food and how it added another element of fun to the day.”

MAKING MEMORIES

While becoming husband and wife was the most memorable part of Louise and Dewar’s wedding, there were a few other moments they’ll never forget. “Hiring childcare to look after the kids was a great idea, as it took every element of stress relating to children out of the equation,” says Louise. “Weddings aren’t exactly fun for little ones, with the team we used looking after the kids for over five hours, with bags of toys, games and crafts for them to enjoy. It was nice for the parents not to have to worry about where the children were, and I’d recommend the company to anyone planning on inviting kids to their big day.”

There were also a fair few laughs at the couple’s wedding which Louise and Dewar are sure to remember. “At one point in the evening, Dewar and I thought it would be a good idea to dance on the table!” laughs the bride. “We ended up nearly tipping it over, and there was nearly a big bride and groom pile-up on the floor! My brother-inlaw also fell asleep with my nieces after a few too many beers, on a makeshift bed made from chairs and a random duvet. I think this was the most photographed moment of the day! It ended up with him being sick in a rose bush, which is surely the sign of a good wedding!”

Holly met Burak on dating app Bumble. “We got along easily straight away as we have similar values, interests and the same sense of humour,” says Holly. “Our first date was in a coffee shop in King’s Cross. It went so well that we ended up going for drinks afterwards, followed by a walk along the canal.”

Burak popped the question four years later during a glamping trip to the Cotswolds. “Little did I know he’d already

picked the perfect ring a few months before,” continues the bride. “He asked me to marry him right at the beginning of our long weekend away, giving us the rest of the break to celebrate. It was a total surprise, and I couldn’t have asked for a better trip away.”

The couple married on the 9th July, 2022, choosing Thames Chase Forest Centre for their venue. Here, Holly tells us more about their day…

Our relaxed and rustic vision wasn’t necessarily traditional, so we loved the idea of having an outdoor ceremony – plus the fact we could choose what we did with the venue’s barn.

Our celebrant was amazing. She made our ceremony so personal, summing up our relationship through her beautiful script, while adding a little bit of humour to it, too.

We decided to do our own flowers, buying wholesale to save on costs. We wanted a ‘wildflower’ feel with colour and foliage, getting invaluable help from the wholesaler for the perfect mix of stock, waxflowers, freesias, lisianthus, alstroemeria and lavender.

I wanted a lace dress with a bohemian style and low back, finding one in London’s Love Spell Design. The lace on the dress was so different to usual, and they even customised the neckline for me.

My stylist Emmie taught me so much about handling curls! On the day I had my hair clipped back but with a few cascades left loose, so it didn’t get too out of control as the day went on –and the dancing started!

For the tables we bought small wooden centrepieces, covering them with recycled jars, bottles, flower-filled glasses and pictures of me and Burak as children.

I wanted quite natural make-up, but had a few individual lashes put in, too. I loved the finish look and I know my mum and sister loved their make-up as well.

Instead of a traditional cake we chose a mountain of Krispy Kremes! Burak arranged them on the morning of the wedding, finishing the stack with bride and groom toppers. They melted a little in the heat, which made them look even more yummy!

My sister and eight-year-old niece were my bridesmaids. My sister chose an off-the-shoulder blush pink design from Quiz, while my niece looked adorable in her Monsoon dress. I love that she picked out a little pink handbag, too, which she hardly put down all day!

Burak wore a French Connection grey flannel suit, which was the perfect balance of lightweight and formal. His groomsmen wore their own suits, tying them together with matching pocket squares, ties and buttonholes

What our guests ate was one of our top priorities. Burak is Turkish, so Turkish food was an easy decision, with a BBQ of flatbreads, shish, bulgur rice and salad. We also hired another caterer who served ice cream and sorbet from his vintage bike.

In the afternoon, Burak’s brother and his girlfriend sang and played the guitar and harmonica. In the evening, we hired the band, The In-Laws. They got everyone on the dancefloor –where they stayed all night!

We were so happy to have our friends and family celebrate with us. When the sun was setting and everyone was sat out on the grass, enjoying the music and the last of the sun, it felt like a festival.

Our caterer has a belly dancer who performs at the restaurant, so we asked if she’d dance at our wedding. She was amazing – she had everyone dancing and taught us all a few moves!

Do exactly what you want to do, remembering what you’re doing it all for in the first place. Congratulations – you’re so lucky to have found your person!

TAN COMMANDMENTS

I really want to be a nice colour for my wedding, but I’ve been put off by spray tans in the past due to a bad experience. How can I know this won’t happen again?

We’ve worked with Vita Liberata for many years; well-known for being an organic tanning brand that leaves you with a beautiful, sun-kissed golden glow. Prior to your visit, we start by sending you a ‘Pre Prep’ email, ensuring you have perfectly prepped skin for the best results. This includes ensuring you do any hair removal between 24 to 48 hours before your spray tan, depending on the method of removal. You should also start exfoliating three days prior to your appointment, and come in wearing loose dark clothing to avoid transfer.

After your tan, you will then be provided with an aftercare leaflet to take away, which explains the importance of not scrubbing your skin, and to use oil or fragrance-free moisturisers for long-lasting results. We always suggest a trial tan, too – usually before your hen – to decide exactly what colour suits you best, as well as giving you the opportunity to see if you want to go lighter or darker for the wedding.

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Engagement shoots offer many benefits to marrying couples. Firstly, it’s the perfect opportunity to be photographed by your chosen photographer without the inevitable pressure of the wedding day. It’s a chance to have fun, chat, get to know each other and take some lovely photographs. It’s not essential this happens, but growing an early relationship with your photographer will always make a difference to the experience on the wedding day. Trying out a photoshoot before the wedding also breaks the ice and means couples will generally be more relaxed in front of the camera when the wedding day portraits come around. My photography is all about natural, relaxed moments but even so, there will always be an element of posing here and there, so if you have the opportunity to practice with your photographer, and get some gorgeous photos before your wedding, then I highly recommend doing so.

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.
