EDITOR’S LETTER

Winter warmers W

ell, hello to all you lovely couples of this fine county, and welcome to my very first issue of Your Yorkshire Wedding. I’m super-excited to bring you the absolute best this area has to offer you and your big day, so let’s dive straight in. As we get to know each other, there’s one thing you’ll grow to understand about me: there’s only one thing I’m as obsessed with as weddings and that’s Christmas! So, I’m giddy with excitement already. Yes, here we are at the end of the another year, and is it me, or did 2023 fly by faster than usual? Mind you, with the pandemic growing more and more distant in our rear view mirrors as weddings embrace a sense of back-to-normality, it’s no wonder really. The highlights for me were the Coronation and Carlos Alcaraz’s brilliant win at Wimbledon, as well as getting to see some more of Europe and, of course, celebrating Your Yorkshire Wedding’s shiny new website! When you’ve read this issue, why not have a look around? There’s plenty on offer to keep you ahead of the curve with your wedding planning. Autumn has been unseasonably warm, so I have everything crossed for some chilly weather as we head into winter; especially for those of you with some cosy December nuptials in store. Summer’s all well and good, but the time comes when it’s great to just snuggle up in your favourite jumper and curl up with your spouse-to-be in front of your favourite Netflix show, or better still, with your tablet and favourite wedding magazine! This issue we let the good times roll with our roundup of local wedding entertainment ideas to ensure your big day is one to remember for everyone involved. What’s more, as we take a look into the world of dressing your bridal party you can make sure your bride tribe or groom’s gang are all hot to trot. Finally, for a touch of winter magic, check out our Hot Topic pages where local experts tell us how to bring the joy of the season to your nuptials. So as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

FAIRYTALE DREAMS Bolton Castle has offered weddings and private hire for a number of years alongside its commitment to welcoming visitors during its open season. Now, this beautiful location has been shortlisted in the North of England Wedding Awards for the Countryside Venue award. What makes these awards special is that it’s only couples who’ve tied the knot at the venue who are eligible to vote, so as a small venue, the team are delighted to have been recognised among other much larger venues in the region. The Castle’s GM, Jacqui Naylor says, “To be a finalist in such awards is a real boost for the entire team who ensure weddings at Bolton Castle exceed all expectations of our couples, as well as their family and their friends. “As a much-loved visitor attraction, we work hard to bring a programme of excellent visitor events between March and November, with weddings and private event hire offered all year round. To date, it has worked well and whether our couples opt for private or shared hire, the castle provides a fairytale day whatever their plans or budget. The awards are yet to be announced but we feel we’ve already won with our shortlisting.” To find out more, head over to www.boltoncastle.co.uk, and to see whether the venue has been triumphant visit www.northofenglandweddingawards.com

CHEERS TO YOU There’s lots going on at The Gilchrist Collection’s venues at the moment, which locally include Rushpool Hall, Danby Castle Barn and Hackness Grange. The collection has announced its biggest and best giveaway yet, offering you the chance to win your wedding! The incredible prize is a complimentary wedding package at any one of its exclusive-use properties for 40 day guests and 100 evening guests on a Sunday through to Thursday. This includes canapés, champagne, a three-course meal, wine, evening buffet and much more. The competition is open to residents of the UK who are aged 18 and over, and legally eligible to enter into a marriage or civil partnership. To enter visit the website of your chosen participating venue (www.rushpoolhall.co.uk/win-a-wedding, www.danbycastle.com/win-a-wedding, or www.hacknessgrange.co.uk/win-a-wedding) and fill out the form, details can also be found on their social media. Entry closes on Tuesday 2nd January 2024, and the winner will be announced on the 4th. In other news from The Gilchrist Collection, CEO and founder Samantha Gilchrist has conducted a survey of 2,000 UK adults to learn about their wedding drinking habits. Sober guests said they were often left feeling uncomfortable sipping a soft drink, as 35 per cent of respondents said they’re questioned about it. In response to the lack of non-alcoholic options available at venues, The Gilchrist Collection has partnered with star barman Merlin Griffiths from Channel 4’s First Dates to add to the venues’ existing menu, providing sober guests with three new grown-up and celebration-

worthy options. Each recipe is perfectly suited to different key moments during the celebrations. Samantha says, “Rather than mimic existing cocktails or simply mix together some fruit juices, each of the new drinks has been designed to give the happy couple and their guests the chance to experience all the wonderful flavours a cocktail has, but without the alcohol. Last CHRISTMAS

REAL WEDDINGS

mma met Tom at a friend’s Christmas party in Newcastle. “I was a student in my second year of uni, whereas Tom’s from the city,” says Emma. “There was an instant attraction and we spent the whole party getting to know each other ending the evening dancing in the living room to Wham’s Last Christmas oblivious to everyone watching! We arranged to meet up after the party and Tom moved into my university house! After graduating I got offered a job in Oxford, so while Tom continued his studies at Teesside University, we had to do long distance for a number of years. You could say we got well acquainted with trains and late night farewells on a Sunday. After five years we finally settled down and lived together in Oxfordshire.” Tom proposed in December 2020 at Emma’s family villa in Spain. “Tom’s a game designer, so it only seemed right that he create a scavenger hunt-style proposal for me, hiding clues around the villa with the help of my sisters,” continues Emma. “Each clue was personal to our story, such as: ‘This next clue can be found somewhere cold and is also the name of one of our favourite movies’. Of course, he meant Frozen, so the next clue was in the freezer, and so on. The final clue led me outside, where I found flickering candles guiding me to the terrace. Our song, Shania Twain’s You’re Still The One, was playing on the loudspeakers, with Tom waiting for me under our family olive tree, with the final clue asking me to marry him. We celebrated with amazing fireworks, red velvet cake and champagne!” The couple set the date for 3 December 2022, choosing Trinity Methodist Church Harrogate for their service, and Goldsborough Hall for their reception. Here, Emma tells us more about their wedding…

MEET ME AT THE ALTAR When it came to choosing where to wed, there was no doubt in the couple’s mind. “I’m Harrogate born and bred, and Tom’s from the North too, so we couldn’t picture anywhere else!” says the bride. “We knew we wanted to get married at Christmas, and also wanted a religious service. The whole church ceremony was incredible, especially hearing the poem my cousin Pippa wrote and read. Entitled A Promise Kept, it was all about our relationship, detailing how we met, and how Tom gave me a promise ring on our one year anniversary, knowing one day we’d tie the knot. It was so personal, and we now have it in pride of place at home!” Music is a huge part of Emma’s life, so she was thrilled when her childhood choir, St Robert’s, agreed to sing at their wedding. “They included our favourite carol O Holy Night, as well as O Come all Ye Faithful and Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” continues Emma. “I thoroughly enjoyed singing along to the descant with the choir, much to Tom’s amusement!”

IT’S CHRISTMAS! Scan to view video

The couple were keen to embody the spirit of Christmas for their wedding, but without being over the top. “We opted for a subtle and elegant winter wonderland theme, choosing maroon and burgundy with hints of rose gold and blush,” says Emma. “We used this scheme for our invitations – rich burgundy with rose gold foil – also weaving it into our table plans and place cards. As one of our favourite things about Christmas is the festive films, 27

we also decided to have It’s a Wonderful Life, The Santa Clause, Elf, The Grinch, The Snowman, Bad Santa, Christmas Carol, Home Alone and Love Actually as table names.” Dressing the tables was equally as important. “We used frosted acrylic glass stands to embody the festive theme, with candelabras with a festive wreath and winter flowers for our centrepieces,” continues Emma. “We also added a selfie stick to each table, so guests could take group shots together. This worked really well – we got some great photos!”

WEAR IT WELL Emma found her dream dress at Harrogate Bridal Rogue Gallery. “I tried on four gowns in total, falling in love with the Pronovias Elara A-line tulle design,” remembers the bride. “The diamanté sparkles looked like glittering ice on the white dress, and both my mum and step mum cried tears of joy when they saw me in it! I teamed it with a feathered white shawl, cathedral veil with diamanté crystals and a lace and silver leaf hair accessory.” Emma and Tom made sure the rest of the party was also dressed to impress. “Tom wore a tailored black velvet dinner jacket and matching trousers, with double-breasted waistcoat, bow tie and patent shoes. His two best men wore matching black tie tuxedos, while my bridesmaids looked stunning in maroon floor-length dresses with faux fur shrugs. Then there was our flowergirl, Rosie, who looked gorgeous in her rose gold dress with sparkly shoes and flower crown. Even our family dog, cockapoo Molly, got involved as our dog-of-honour. She had a personalised maroon bandana to match the bridesmaids!”

FESTIVE FEAST Emma and Tom made sure their guests were well fed on their big day. “The food at Goldsborough Hall for the wedding breakfast was incredible,” says the bride. “We chose smoked salmon with lemon, pickled shallot and capers to begin, followed by roasted corn-fed chicken, mushroom duxelles, pommes Anna and madeira sauce for our main meal. Dessert came in the form of a truly decadent sticky toffee pudding. My husband was very lucky that my step mum let him have hers as well since she was too full!” The couple’s wedding cake also had serious wow factor. “We wanted to continue our maroon, blush and rose gold theme, with our supplier creating a beautiful four-tiered cake with flavours of chocolate, red velvet, Victoria sponge and carrot,” continues Emma. “We served this for our evening guests as part of the buffet, which went down a treat.”

DANCEFLOOR READY Entertainment-wise, Emma and Tom opted for a live band and DJ. “For our first dance we of course chose You’re Still the One, as it holds a lot of importance to us,” says Emma. “The band sang this live and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! They then sang We Found Love, which immediately had guests up on the dancefloor, jumping up and down to Rihanna’s classic tune. To be honest, there really wasn’t a moment where the dancefloor wasn’t full and we couldn’t stop smiling all night.” Emma was also keen to have a traditional father daughter dance. “What song works better than Boney M’s Daddy Cool?” laughs the bride. “It was such a fun song to dance to, with Tom and I twisting and twirling around with our dads. My sisters then joined in and dad loved having his moment to show off his spectacular dancing!” 28

An unexpected illness led to wedding bells for Nicola and Ian Images courtesy of Creative Images Photography

N

icola and Ian met at school back in the 80s. “We then went to the same college, where Ian asked me out on the steps in front of his friends – and I said, ‘No!’” says Nicola. “Years passed, then one day Ian popped up on Facebook as a friend suggestion. Messaging each other, he explained he was getting divorced, so being a lawyer I offered my help and suggested a coffee date. That first coffee was lovely; a great catch up while talking about the legal stuff. The next time we met was to get his divorce and conveyancing moving. Ian then asked me out for a third time for no reason, saying we should go for a walk the next morning. We talked for hours, then as we said goodbye he kissed me. Boom – that’s when I knew this was something special.” Ian proposed after Nicola became seriously unwell. “I was so ill I was put on life support,” continues the bride. “When I woke Ian gave me a rare tanzanite promise ring, explaining how he’d even asked my parents’ permission to marry me while I was in a coma. His promise was that when I was better, he would ask for my hand properly, but not until I was well enough for it to be a romantic moment. Months passed, with me having to learn to walk and talk again, until one day Ian suggested we look at a few wedding venues. I explained that he was doing things the wrong way round – you get engaged and then you go looking! – but we still set off, arriving at Whitley Hall and with me determined to leave my wheelchair in the car. We stopped in the bar for a drink, and Ian instantly dropped to his knees and asked me. It was a beautiful moment, and we booked the date there and then for the 6th December.” 31

Regal romance

Jake and Adam’s big day at Carlton Towers was a right royal occasion Images courtesy of Lynsey Doran Photography

W

hen Adam and Jake met online they were both immediately drawn to each other’s values, love of family and strong work ethic. So, naturally their relationship flourished and one day down the line Jake decided it was time to propose. He took Adam to their favourite spot, the West Cliff Pier at Whitby on New Year’s Eve, which was also Adam’s birthday. When Jake popped the question, it was a complete surprise for Adam, and although he never wanted a public engagement, the whole of the North East was seemingly on the pier that day, which Jake assures us was completely unintentional! Adam always had his heart set on tying the knot at a country estate or castle, while Jake was keen on somewhere more modern with a classic twist. Carlton Towers offered them the perfect combination of both with its impressive grounds, large stately rooms and original features. The couple were confident in their vision from the outset and with plenty of help from The Blonde & The Blooms this was brought to life in the most incredible way. Read on as we spill the beans on Adam and Jake’s wonderful wedding day: 4th August, 2023...

36

REAL WEDDINGS

The two felt nervous initially but incredibly excited too. The day couldn’t have gone any more smoothly and as soon as they were ready they felt a million dollars knowing they were about to enjoy their big day with their loved ones.

The couple knew they wanted a lot of flowers, but the finishing touches and finer details were even better than they could have imagined thanks to The Blonde & The Blooms.

The brief for both grooms’ attire was black and gold red-carpet glamour. Adam wore a gold suit jacket with a black waistcoat, while Jake wore a black jacket with gold waistcoat, each complementing the other’s colour and pattern.

The Blonde & The Blooms created a 12ft flower arch, which framed the ceremony room doors beneath which the duo said “I do.” At the entrance to the ceremony room stood two large urns filled with Ecuadorian roses while the theme was continued via the roses either side of the aisle making it a real showstopper. During the ceremony various loved ones read reflections and readings, lending it an air of intimacy and emotion. The couple’s friends Rosie and Leanne, as well as Jake’s grandma, Sheila, had written pieces about Jake and Adam and their memories of them. Jake’s friend Maria read a piece called Love Is Love.

White King Louis chairs added to the regal finish and the ceremony room decoration provided quite the talking point for the couple’s guests. 37

Singer Jennifer Owens performed You Are The Reason by Callum Scott as Adam and Jake walked down the aisle. She also sang a reflection song: How To Save A Life by The Fray, and How Do I Live by LeAnn Rimes for signing the register. The newlyweds exited to Rather Be by Clean Bandit. She then performed a two-hour set while guests enjoyed drinks and canapés on the lawn.

The groomsmaids wore a high fashion champagne-coloured dress with champagne sequins and a detachable train, which was worn for the ceremony and removed later in the evening to switch up the look.

The regal country-living theme and neutral colour palette was also elegantly carried through the day’s stationery including the order of the day, seating plan and welcome sign. The wedding breakfast room was decorated with gold candelabras entwined with Ecuadorian roses and stems of olive branch.

Favours were handmade macarons from Where The Ribbon Ends embossed with gold A and J initials, and wrapped in silk cloth boxes. 38

REAL WEDDINGS

There was also an incredible sweet treat table alongside the four-tier cake, all decorated in keeping with the day’s colour palette and again embossed with gold A and J.

Saxophonist Sarah Sax performed immediately following the newlyweds’ first dance and surprised everyone as she entered to Jubel, which definitely got the party started. We’re told that Sarah was the highlight of the day.

Special mention also goes to Anna at The Blonde & The Blooms. “She went out of her way to make sure everything looked sensational and has become a friend. We can’t thank her enough for her hard work, commitment and vision for our wedding day,” Adam and Jake say.

Smoothie Band performed a mix of music from the 60s to present day, which meant the dancefloor was never empty. They engaged brilliantly with guests and collaborated well with Sarah. Adam’s nanna Sheila, 85, was a particular fan and didn’t stop dancing! The resident DJ at Carlton Towers finished the night off until 1am with a great mix of tunes.

The newlyweds wish to give a big shout out to Janet at Carlton Towers who really helped to make the day special. “Throughout the three days Janet and the rest of her team couldn’t do enough to make us, along with our guests, feel like royalty,” they tell us.

Vanity Fair This summer fairytale wedding shoot celebrates female empowerment and individuality Images courtesy of Clare Coleman Photography

I

“ nspired by the strong history and breathtaking beauty of Birdsall House, I wanted to design a Vanity Fair floral wedding shoot to create a timeless and elegant feel,” says Helen Emson of Willow & Bear Floral Design. “The focus was on empowering our bride to be strong, independent and individual in her wedding styling and choices. Having three different styling and floral looks reflected different sides of her personality, with a consistent strong classical look from her groom standing strong by her side. I used classical

summer pastel ingredients with lots of roses, peonies, hydrangeas and seasonal British blooms for a bold contemporary look that blended with the stunning surroundings. The asymmetrical arch at the front is a bold representation of combining strength and beauty through florals; designed to set the trends rather than follow them. The table is set for an intimate celebration with a refined classical look and a contemporary edge to honour the couples’ love and devotion to each other.”

Could it be magic?

ADRIAN SALAMON 07849 123 560 | https://adriansalamon.co.uk Adrian Salamon is a wedding magician, based in York, with more than 10 years’ experience. He knows your wedding is a special day that you’ll remember for the rest of your lives and understands that you’ll want everything to be perfect, including the entertainment. “My magic can be a great addition to your wedding. In fact, it can be an important part of the day for several reasons,” he says. By helping to break the ice among guests from different social circles,

Adrian’s performances can lead to meaningful conversations and connections between those gathered. You can rest assured that no one will be feeling left out or alone, making sure you can relax on what can be a stressful day. Adrian’s performances also help to capture amazing photos. By working with your photographer he can make sure you get shots of some fantastic reactions and happy faces, ensuring you have a visual record of the fun and excitement on your special day.

ENTERTAINMENT

The all-rounders

In the picture

How you want your day to feel is a really important factor when nailing your wedding entertainment. If you have visions of serene atmospheres and elegant musical backdrops, then a string quartet, singing guitarist or instrumentalist would be ideal to keep the drinks and chatter flowing. However, if the idea of quiet and understated is just not your vibe, and everyone simply must be dancing, singing, non-stop partying and have sore feet in the morning, then an awesome folk-pop and indie band is a no-brainer, or perhaps a funky soul and disco band would go down a treat with your soul music lovers. Want to make a statement at your wedding and make sure it’s unforgettable? Alternative entertainment like singing waiters and DJ live bands, who are known for involving the crowd, are stand-out options for a memorable wedding celebration that’s personal to you. For top advice, recommendations and a really friendly expert team, get in touch with Entertainment Nation who’ll help make your wedding dream a reality.

Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals UNDER CONTROL

WHAT’S HOT?

My hair tends to go frizzy in the winter. What can I do to tame it and have smooth shiny locks ready for my stylist on my wedding day?

What bridal hairstyle trends should we be looking out for in 2024?

Samantha of Hair by Samantha Ashley (www.instagram.com/hairbysamanthaashley) says: If you have naturally frizzy hair, it’s hard going from season to season while keeping the frizz at bay. This is something I understand all too well having a natural wave plus some lovely post-partum regrowth myself. Thankfully, there are some products and methods that have been tried and tested by me and seem to do the trick. Hopefully they will for you too! I cannot stress enough the importance of a really good shampoo and conditioner, my go to is Olaplex. I was introduced to it by my lovely hairdresser when the products were launched in the salon and honestly haven’t looked back since. I use the shampoo and conditioner, followed by the bond smoother leave-in styling treatment when the hair is wet. Drying your hair smooth is key. There are so many different tools you can buy to help you get a salon-smooth blow dry at home, whether it be a big hair-rotating heated brush, a hair dryer using a smoothing nozzle and brush, or splashing out on a high-end branded tool such as an air wrap, which comes with many different attachments to achieve a variety of styles. Drying your hair properly and sectioning it as you go will make such a huge difference. Lastly, and this tip is the real secret weapon: Colour WOW Dream Coat Supernatural Spray. This is applied after the hair has been shampooed, conditioned and towel dried so the hair is damp. This spray creates an invisible waterproof cloak over the hair to help protect against humidity or any sort of damp in the air. You would then dry the hair smooth as normal and style... you can thank me later!

Kay at Kay Binnersley Hair (www.kaybinnersleyhair.co.uk) says: Every bride dreams of looking timeless and radiant on her wedding day, and in 2024, bridal hairstyle trends are all about embracing a sense of effortless elegance. Here are some of the standout styles that will be making waves down the aisle: •Undone updos. The undone look is gaining popularity among brides who want a hairstyle that feels both relaxed and refined. These updos feature soft, loose tendrils framing the face and a slightly messy bun or twist at the back. It’s the perfect balance between casual and chic. •Bridal waves. Classic waves never go out of style, but in 2024, they’re getting a modern twist. Expect to see brides opting for loose, beachy waves that exude a carefree vibe. Whether you wear your hair down or partially pinned up, these waves add a touch of romance to any bridal look. •Half up, half down. The timeless half up half down style is making a comeback with a contemporary twist. Brides are incorporating delicate accessories like pins, pearls, or flowers into this versatile hairstyle. It provides the best of both worlds, allowing hair to flow gracefully while keeping it secure and comfortable. •Braided updos. Braids continue to be a popular choice for brides in 2024. From intricate fishtail braids to elegant French braids, there are countless ways to incorporate these into your bridal updo. They add texture, dimension, and a touch of whimsy to your hairstyle. •Keep it personal. In 2024, bridal hairstyles are all about personalisation. Brides are encouraged to choose styles that reflect their unique personalities and preferences, ensuring they feel confident and beautiful on their big day. Whatever style you opt for, remember that the key to a stunning bridal hairstyle is to make it your own. 69

Beauty queen

We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty

H

annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.

Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 70

There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.

INTERVIEW

How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.

What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin

The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 71

Well grounded If wedding planning stress is getting the better of you, take this time-out with Ground Wellbeing’s Peigin Crowley

But in 2020, her attention shifted to the home. Experiencing the devastating impacts of stress, burnout, loss of identity and disconnection from the natural world, she embarked on a quest to create products and at-home rituals that could easily be incorporated into a daily self-care routine. Today her brand, Ground Wellbeing, continues to grow, focusing on craft and quality over quantity, sustainable business practices and the promotion of accessible and intuitive self-care for all. Committed to the power of touch, the brand’s rituals are created by Peigin to deliver carefully developed massage treatments through her years of work as an aromatherapist, where she gained a deeper sense of empathy, compassion and understanding. She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.

sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.

TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.

BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

Mane ATTRACTION

Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be

M

odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.

People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.

How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.

What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding

process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

Wonderland Blooms Making floral dreams come true

ASK THE EXPERTS

HOT TOPIC Winter wonderland

Our experts offer stellar wedmin advice on creating an elegant winter wedding A TOUCH OF FROST

Vicki Endersby from Wonderland Blooms (www.wonderlandblooms.uk) says: To infuse an elegant winter vibe into your wedding flowers, first consider some key elements. Embrace rich, regal colours such as burgundy, deep greens, navy, and plum for a cosy winter feel. Incorporate textural elements too, for example velvet ribbons, faux fur wraps or metallic accents for added luxury. Meanwhile, include evergreen foliage like pine, cedar, and eucalyptus to achieve a winter forest vibe, complete with a touch of gold or silver metallic accents to create a sense of opulence. Alternatively, to mimic the glistening frost of

winter, incorporate crystal elements or sparkling accessories. You might even consider a light dusting of artificial snow or iridescent glitter for a frosty touch. If a rustic vibe is more your thing, go ultra seasonal with red berries and pine cones. Finally, candlelit décor is a must when creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, so combine with your floral arrangements to achieve the full effect. By blending any of these elements you and your floral designer can create wedding flower arrangements that exude the elegance and magic of a winter wonderland, making your special day one to remember.

WINTER WONDERLAND Andrea Graham at High Trenhouse (www.hightrenhouseweddings.com) says: Winter can be the most beautiful season of the year for your wedding as it brings a sense of magic and romance. Here at High Trenhouse we boast the warmth of a 17th-century farmhouse and the incredible views are the ideal backdrop for photos. You can also enjoy the cosiness of log-burner fires in both of our bars and inside the ceremony areas as just one of our many features that bring the feeling of welcome and homeliness at this time of year. We also have three outside areas available as well as the lawn, even if they’re covered in snow! There’s our bespoke firepit, which is used for toasting marshmallows (or your treat of choice) and for snuggling up alongside to enjoy the warmth and glow of the fire. We pride ourselves on making our guests feel welcome for the most romantic winter weddings possible. It’s what we do, as we’re the blank canvas for you to bring your special day to life, and is as idyllic as you could wish for – a perfect winter wonderland! 79

COSY ELEGANCE Rebecca Barker from Rise Hall (www.dine.co.uk/venues/rise-hall) says: Finding the perfect venue to host your elegant winter wedding will set the tone for the wedding plans to come! A perfect venue will provide everything from spectacular indoor spaces for wedding photographs, cosy spots for guests to relax in while enjoying a drinks reception of delectable canapés, to backdrops only enhanced by a dusting of snow. Rise Hall in East Yorkshire is an ideal choice when it comes to a venue that encapsulates elegance. Arriving to a wedding weekend hosting 62 of your nearest and dearest, welcomed by the house butler, means your guests will enjoy relaxed luxury at its best. With a sweeping elegant staircase, cosy library, open fire and views of the Yorkshire countryside blissfully dusted by Jack Frost, it’s a must see. Taking seasonality across your menu choices will allow the stunning winter wedding theme to continue. An elegant wedding breakfast showcasing dishes with winter flavours, rich decadent desserts and velvet wines will leave guests blown away. No elegant winter wedding vibe is complete without a showstopping experience for guests and ending the evening with a firework display held at Rise Hall is the perfect choice to light up the inky darkness of the star-filled nights sky. While loved ones cosy up around the firepit watching the display, a hot toddy in hand, winter will suddenly become everyone’s favourite wedding season.

SHADES OF WINTER Christian Kelly at Laser Made Occasions (www.lasermadeoccasions.co.uk) says: It’s important to think about your theme and choose a colour palette that complements the season nicely. For example, many couples at this time of year looking to create an elegant, winter theme opt for luxury silver, rose gold, bronze and gold; all-white themes; or deep, rich colour schemes such as plum, burgundy, dark emerald and navy. It also helps to choose a palette that goes well with your venue’s style. Once you’ve figured out the perfect colours and overall theme for your big day, it’s easy to create a well-thought-out and stylish look. Consistency in your theme can be the key to creating this luxurious, elegant atmosphere while avoiding a laid-back, mismatched style. Choosing a set of classic and script-style fonts you’ll use throughout your wedding stationery and signage also helps to add that air of luxury. One of our favourite seasonal weddings we helped create invitations, menus and signage for was for a couple who’d chosen a deep autumnal colour palette. They worked with us to create bespoke mirrored bronze maple leaf-shaped invitations and place names, which looked stunning with their closely colour-matched floral displays, other signage and bridal party outfits. 80

HOT WHEELS Rob Slater from Lady J Wedding Car Hire ( Lady J Wedding Car Hire | 07739 883 994) says: If the weather on your special day is cold and wet it’s not a disaster. We’ll ensure you still arrive in style and will pull out the stops to make sure that, first and foremost, you get into our elegant vehicle as dry as possible. Lady J always carries large golf umbrellas and underfoot, when necessary, I’ll roll out a special non slip mat! Once safely inside, Lady J offers you the very best in elegant transportation for your wedding day. What could be better than sitting in a car that offers you heated seats and lambs wool rugs all within a climatecontrolled environment? My normal celebratory drink for the happy couple is champagne, but if the weather’s cold you may choose a hot toddy while relaxing in the back. While Lady J offers all the style and comfort of a limousine, she also offers the safety of anti-skid control should the going become slippy. She rides on air suspension, so that hot toddy shouldn’t spill as you take your first ride. She’s supremely quiet and her style will impress your guests. So, if you wish for the very best in winter comfort Lady J is ready to help!

The suites come complete with an indoor lounge, bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas, as well as a private pool with views over the lagoon. Dereck Joubert, the CEO of Great Plains, tells us: “Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the ecodesign boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day.” Discover more about Sitatunga Private Island and its offerings at www.greatplainsconservation.com/safari/sitatunga-private-island

The Italian dream

Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village

F

or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.

on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.

RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY

The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.

Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.

FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.

LOOKING FOR MORE?

Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.

For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.

DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my

Since its grand opening in June 2022 it has won many accolades including Britain’s Best Hotel by The Times and the Sunday Times, topping their list of the Top 100 Places to Stay in the UK. So, it was only right for us to check it out for our couples. Located between Newbury and Hungerford, this 18th-century country house hotel & spa is the perfect spot to unwind pre- or post-wedding whether you want a cocktail aside the heated outdoor swimming pool; or are ready to don your hiking boots and clear your mind on the close-by North Wessex Downs. You’re so warmly welcomed as soon as you enter the lobby lounge. Waiting at the reception desk was a lovely couple sipping a glass of wine checking in – yes you get a glass of the good stuff on arrival - and who was at their feet but two four-legged friends. Living the life of Riley, these pampered pooches were also looking forward to their stay in one of the several dog-friendly rooms. They even get a doggie welcome pack on arrival! With a crisp rosé in hand, I check into the Sutton Suite. An interior designer’s dream, sunlight pours into the room which overlooks the surrounding countryside. It’s warm and inviting with whimsy wallpaper, mix-match plush textiles and the prime centrepiece, the stunning copper roll top bath, is just waiting to be enjoyed. With a private mini bar, as well as raiding rights to the pantry (yes, there’s a pantry where you can help yourselves to snacks and drinks!), you’re guaranteed to switch off, unwind and feel truly spoilt. When it comes to food and drink, 1772 Brasserie offers a fine choice of contemporary dishes for all tastes. I chose crispy chilli squid followed by Berkshire lamb rump, cooked to perfection.
