Ho, ho, ho

Yes, it’s that magical time of the year once again! I don’t know about you but this year has passed by quickly for me, and luckily it has been a wonderful one. We’ve celebrated my mum and dad’s Golden Wedding Anniversary, we’re looking forward to welcoming our Australian relatives to the UK this Christmas and my brother and sister-in-law are having their first baby this December which is the best present ever! I also managed to take a couple of sun-drenched trips this year, including to Oia in Santorini where I stayed at the fabulous Villa Mellow, booked through The Greek Villas (https://thegreekvillas.com/destinations/ santorini-villas/oia/mellow) and to Athens where I was very spoilt in the rooftop 501 Milos Terrace Suite at boutique hotel xenodocheio Milos (https://xenodocheiomilos.com). Read all about these wonderful properties, perfect for honeymooners in my Greece is the word review on page 94.

To celebrate the festive period, we’ve compiled a seasonal issue for you to enjoy. There’s everything from stunning summery-themed real weddings and a coastal-styled shoot for couples planning al fresco nuptials next year to snow-capped venues perfect for winter weddings. Don’t miss the latest news, offers, fashion, beauty and honeymoon ideas plus there are handmade ideas for those planning a DIY wedding, and advice about big-day photography and videography.

For those of you getting married soon then I wish you many congratulations and for those not taking the plunge until 2023, I’ll see you next issue.

Happy Christmas! Claire x

One of my favourite European countries is Greece which I’ve been fortunate enough to visit many times. On this trip, I soaked up the warm sunshine in Santorini at Villa Mellow and admired the city views in Athens from the rooftop terrace at hotel xenodocheio Milos. Find out how you can book a dream honeymoon at both properties on page 84.

I love the fact that Emma and Jamie could enjoy their first dance outdoors at the Knightor Winery, not to mention the cute ice cream trike from Proper Vintage Cornwall! Don’t miss reading all about their wedding on page 33.

Pastel colours are my favourite so I fell in love with the sugar-coated details at Katie and Ben’s wedding as soon as it landed in my inbox. It was photographed by So Natural Photography and can be seen in full on page 38.

How cute is the label on this bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau 2022, Domaine Bel Avenir from Devon-based online wine and spirit merchant Wickhams? I’ll be indulging this Christmas! Turn to page nine to read, and see more.

Margo R Photography captured this stunning seaside image as part of one of our styled shoots for this issue on page 49 that took place at Pier One Plymouth. How cool is The Vintage 21 Bar, hired by couple Helen and Phil for their marquee celebration and photographed by KJP Photography? Find out more on page 26. Charlotte Razzell Photography took this couple’s portrait as part of the chic styled shoot at The Barn at Pengelly that we’re featuring on page 45. Look how romantic Wyndham Trenython Manor looks here decorated for Christmas. I can’t wait to visit this Cornish venue that hosts up to 80 guests for weddings. Turn to page 15 where all will be revealed.

Building on the success of

Cove is delighted to introduce Cove Passion Liqueur. This exceptional hand-crafted liqueur is made by combining fresh passion fruits with their luxuriously smooth Devon potato vodka and the result is enchanting, exotic and delicious.

Try Cove Passion Liqueur over ice with a twist of grapefruit, with cloudy lemonade or in a cocktail. Presented in a stylish bottle with a wooden cork so you can easily reseal the bottle after use.

Commenting on the launch, the founder of Cove, Leanne Carr said: “We are thrilled to bring this product to the market. By using fresh passion fruits we’ve created a uniquely delicate liqueur which will not only excite those who like to make quality cocktails at home but also those who prefer something sweeter than whisky as a digestif since it works well on its own.”

Devon Cove creates exceptional vodka using King Edward potatoes lovingly grown by the sea on founder Leanne Carr’s family farm overlooking Hope Cove in South Devon. Low-carb and also gluten-free, Cove Vodka is as pure and clean as the sea air around it and uniquely smooth to taste.

Since its launch in 2019 Devon Cove has gone from strength to strength bagging a handful of high-profile taste awards, the most recent of which was a Gold award in the Ultra Premium category at the Vodka Masters 2022. Devon Cove has also expanded its range of liqueurs and launched a cocktail club subscription service so you need never be without a good cocktail at home. Leanne has become somewhat of a master mixologist and looks forward to featuring Cove Passion Liqueur in new cocktail kits to be released soon.

Cove Passion Liqueur with 25% ABV is available to buy from www.devoncove.co.uk 5cl (£5.95) and 50cl (£33.00).

Less than two years since its launch, Devon-based independent online wine and spirit merchant, Wickhams has been included in the Decanter Retailer Awards 2022 shortlist in not one but three categories; ‘Best Specialist Retailer, England & Wales, ‘Best Specialist Retailer, South and Regional France’ and ‘Best Small Online Retailer’. The 2022 Awards are more competitive than ever with entries epitomising the exceptional choice consumers have when it comes to buying wine in the UK.

Wickhams’ Founder Dan Farrell-Wright comments: “My aim with Wickhams is to provide easy access to great wine for everyone so to be shortlisted in three categories in such a prestigious and important retailer award is hugely gratifying. It is an impressive achievement for such a young business and further proof we are doing lots right!”

At the core of Wickhams’ business is the desire to offer customers the chance to try new wines, whether in specially curated cases, the tasty mixed-case-of-six value option or via their tasting events. All Wickhams events are interactive, plenty of fun and come highly recommended. They are hosted by wine expert Pip Vanham and Wickhams’ founder Dan Farrell-Wright, alongside other guest hosts. For online tastings, the wines are delivered through the letterbox in tasting-size packets large enough for two pours, before the event, ready for customers to enjoy from the comfort of their own sofa.

The Winter Wine Discovery is taking place on Saturday 19th November between 12-6 pm at the Mercure Hotel, Exeter Rougemont.

FEVER & BOUTIQUE BRING THE PARTY TO EXETER

After months of planning, preparation and building, locals have had their first glimpse of the new-look Fever & Boutique, as the doors to the transformed club finally opened.

The refurbishment, worth more than £1,500,000 and over three months in the making, saw the building stripped back to bricks and mortar, with the extensive refit creating an all-new space. There are new bars, new furniture and new lighting.

Across the club’s two rooms, partygoers can expect a bigger and better experience than before. In Boutique, the club’s largest room, there are dance podiums and VIP booths. In Fever, the second room, there’s a light-up dancefloor.

Dominic Borg, general manager of Fever & Boutique, said: “We’ve been excited to unveil our new look ever since we shut for refurbishment in June, so our reopening certainly feels like a long time coming! After such a huge renovation project, it’s great to see our dance floors full once again!”

SHARP’S RELEASES ATLANTIC PALE ALE IN A CAN

Multi-award-winning Atlantic Pale Ale is proving to be so popular that Rock-based Sharp’s Brewery in Cornwall has launched it in a four-pack of cans. Available now in retail outlets across the UK, the 500ml cans are encased in a recyclable cardboard sleeve meaning they are completely plastic-free.

Sharp’s is responding to an increasing demand amongst consumers for different ways to enjoy their beer at home or social events. Loaded with tropical notes and a refreshing flavour, it is a popular choice in pubs, bars and restaurant settings as well as at home.

Inspired by the dynamism of the Atlantic Ocean, Sharp’s Atlantic Pale Ale is deep golden with the aroma of stunning citrus notes, juicy tropical fruits and fresh-picked hops with a touch of candy floss. The flavour has a delicate sweetness with fruity succulence and citrus spice brought to the fore. The finish is sweet at first becoming dry and lingering with hop zest. All this, along with Sharp’s trademark complexity and balance, gives a beautifully refreshing pale ale without the intense bitterness sometimes associated with New World pale ales.

Many brewers now offer their beers in a can because cans limit exposure to both light and oxygen, keeping the beer inside fresh and flavourful for longer. Consumers are increasingly seeking new ways to enjoy their favourite products.

Sharp’s Atlantic Pale Ale has been repeatedly recognised by consumers and experts alike for its taste and quality. Testament to this is the numerous awards the beer has won. The ale recently won bronze in the World Beer Awards 2022 and the World Beer Awards 2021. In addition, it also won gold in the International Cask Beer category in the 2021 International Beer Challenge.

Sharp’s Brewery’s marketing controller, James Nicholls, said, “Atlantic Pale Ale is proving to be so popular with our customers that we are investing in a new can format. We also know more people are enjoying at-home social occasions, so the launch of these multipacks is ideal for this trend.”

In other news, Sharp’s Brewery and Cornwall’s smallest nano-brewery Bluntrock brewers have united in collaboration and produced a new limited-edition Camel Trail Pale Ale available in both cans and kegs. Due to their proximity and a shared love of brewing and history, the two actually couldn’t be more excited to be working together. Their first co-conceived small batch brew, Camel Trail Pale Ale, is a hoppy, hazy 4.5% beer, brewed using a special American IPA yeast strain.

Sharp’s is the largest brewer of cask ale in the South West, and Doom Bar is probably the most successful cask beer of its generation. Doom Bar is currently the UK’s no.1 cask beer brand alongside national favourites such as Atlantic, Sea Fury and Offshore. In comparison, Bluntrock is one of Cornwall’s newest breweries, having set up in August 2021, with a focus on modern styles of beer, from hop forward hazy IPAs to fruited kettle sours. Sharp’s sells its beer from John O’Groats to Land’s End, whilst everything Bluntrock brews are sold from their onsite Taproom,

which is right next to the nano brewery.

George Collins, Bluntrock’s head brewer has joined forces with Sharp’s head brewer Aaron McClure and technical brewer Jon Wide, all of whom worked together at Sharp’s Brewery in the early days of their brewing careers, to collaborate on this new limited-edition beer. Camel Trail Pale Ale is named after the local cycle track where people regularly use tandem bikes. It will be available at local Cornish outlets including The Mariners in Rock and as a canned version from both the Bluntrock and the Sharp’s Brewery shops.

Jon Wide says, “It’s been really fun to work with George and to create the same brew on both of our brewing kits. George’s nano-plant makes 150 litres and our small-scale pilot plant makes over 1,000 litres per batch, whereas our normal scale is up to 25,000 litres per brew so it’s great to brew at different scales and on different equipment. George’s beers are big and bold and he challenged us to step out of our comfort zones and create something different from our norm. We’ve used liquid hops in this beer, which Bluntrock Brewery use a lot, but which we’ve not used before at Sharps. It’s been a really interesting journey, and just brilliant to be collaborating now as close neighbours.”

George Collins of Bluntrock says, “This has been exciting for all of us and it’s good to see that a brewery with Sharp’s success is still keen to engage with a tiny brewery like ours at Bluntrock. For me, it’s been great to be able to go back to where I started brewing and be made to feel so welcome all these years later. It’s also been really good to see how a brewery like Sharp’s has approached collaboration with a different brew style like ours, and how we’ve been able to complement each other’s brewing styles in the process. Sharp’s help us out a lot, and we’ve all enjoyed creating this new, and very tasty, beer together.”

AFTERNOON TEA

In partnership with The Roald Dahl Story Company, Luxury Family Hotels has created a Matilda Afternoon Tea - a magical dining experience themed on the iconic children’s story. To commemorate one of the best children’s authors of all time, Roald Dahl Day is celebrated every year on his birthday – the 13th of September – to remember the magic that he brought and continues to bring to children all over the world.

The Matilda Afternoon Tea is currently available at all five Luxury Family Hotels properties until April 2023 including at Fowey Hall in South Cornwall.

The perfect modern tale of triumph over adversity, Matilda is the story of a smart young girl who, through bravery, sheer determination, and a little help from her friends, overcomes the much bigger bullies in her life and changes her story for the better.

As a much-loved tale by many, Luxury Family Hotels were thrilled at the unique opportunity to collaborate with The Roald Dahl Story Company and bring the delightful story, with all its wonderful foodie moments, to its hotels.

Eat, eat, eat! The Matilda Afternoon Tea experience includes both an adult and children’s menu and has been lovingly crafted to celebrate the story’s iconic food moments, from the cosy after-school sharing of bread and margarine in Miss Honey’s cottage to Bruce’s formidable battle with an enormous chocolate cake – and of course who can forget the infamous newt slipped into the Trunchbull’s water jug!

Families of all ages can share in the surprise and delight of the tale together, enjoying the scrumptious and theatrical creations crafted by the Luxury Family Hotels culinary team.

The magic starts with a selection of carefully curated sandwiches

Melody-rose Hair & Weddings "Melody is a truly amazing hairdresser. I booked her for my wedding in January and as we are based in Essex was unable to do a hair trial. I needn't have worried as she took my rough idea and produced a fantastic hairstyle. She went above and beyond on the day even doing my makeup when she realised I hadn’t got one booked. COURT,

a hill with 32 acres of grounds and ancient woodland looking across the North Devon countryside.

The fountain at the front and the 16th-century Elizabethan Gatehouse with its original wood doors both offer a great setting for a ceremony and big-day photographs. Another al fresco ceremony option is outside the front of the house on the grounds with a backdrop of views stretching across the valley to Codden Hill.

The Courtyard has recently been transformed into a stunning space with ambience lighting, plenty of tables and seating underneath a canopy of fairylights, a decked area and swinging chairs.

Indoor ceremonies take place in The Panelled Hall for up to 90 guests with its two carved wooden pillars and working fireplace. The large front doors open out on to the balustrade with the fountain in the background. Alternatively, St. Peter’s Church is a two-minute walk down the bottom of the garden.

Two period-style comfortable lounges form a Gatsby-inspired cocktail and gin bar. The Main Bar is modern, yet vintage in style with a flagstone floor and The Old Refectory, which has been transformed into an elegant function room to host larger receptions has a beautiful parquet floor and reclaimed wood feature wall. In the evening, it sets the stage for a band or a disco with up to 180 guests.

POLURRIAN ON THE LIZARD, CORNWALL

This pristine white clifftop location was awarded Silver in the Wedding Venue of the Year category in the Cornwall Tourism Awards 2021/22 and it’s not hard to see why! Not only does the venue, perched on the unspoilt Lizard Peninsula benefit from the best sunsets in the region, but it also offers a variety of wedding packages to suit all budgets, and bespoke menus easily catering for all dietary requirements.

With reception rooms boasting unbeatable views across Mounts Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, a choice of function rooms includes the Marconi Room designed for ceremonies of up to 60 guests (or elopement nuptials) and the Cove View Suite, complete with its own bar, which can host up to 90 people for the ceremony and 100 for the wedding breakfast. The restaurant boasting a Gozney wood-fired oven also provides a romantic ceremony backdrop and top-quality catering is promised for all packages, with highlights on the menu including Thai fishcakes, gin-cured salmon and hake loin.

The property is home to 41 individually styled bedrooms perfect for wedding guests, making this an idyllic coastal spot for both low-key, intimate weddings and larger parties. The venue can also be hired on an exclusive basis, providing use of the entire hotel and 12 acres of cliff-top gardens.

Originally built in 1890, the property was a fashionable railway

hotel appealing to distinguished guests. Destroyed by a fire in 1909 and rebuilt, the hotel has hosted glamorous guests from Hollywood’s heyday to Strictly Come Dancing stars. Every bit as welcoming now as it was then, the modern-day Polurrian on the Lizard enjoyed an exciting refurbishment in 2019 and remains a fashionable escape with a health club and spa, seasonal outdoor pool and restaurant serving up Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

Weddings and events manager Megan Walsingham achieved the further accolade of Bronze in the Unsung Hero category in the awards so couples are in good hands as her expert skills promise to remove the stress from the planning process. Megan tells us, “I help from the enquiry stage through to the big day. It’s important to me to have a great relationship with all of my couples and I have worked hard to build great relationships with local suppliers.”

This award-winning, exclusive-use wedding venue offers an indoor and outdoor ceremony space in the beautiful Walled Garden under the Oak Arbour, and in the Cider Barn for year-round celebrations. New for 2022 has been the addition of The Paddock providing the bridal party with a spa-worthy space to get ready in, overlooking the rolling hills and patchwork fields of the Devonshire countryside through the vast floor-to-ceiling windows. The carefully considered interior design details and colour schemes have created ultra-luxe spaces and suppliers are equipped with a hair-washing basin and hair and make-up stations. There are also showers, fluffy towels, premium toiletries and plenty of little luxuries creating a home-from-home feel. This additional space is available to hire from 7 am until the ceremony begins when the wedding coordinator will accompany everyone down to the main venue for the wedding entrance.

The Stalls are located just behind The Paddock and offer guests somewhere seriously stylish to stay on the night of the wedding in new accommodation pods set within a woodland glade. These rustic retreats

with Hygge-inspired décor have been designed in a minimalist Scandistyle. The Stalls can host up to eight people (two per pod) and are automatically booked for the night of the wedding to retain exclusivity.

The venue’s hand-picked collection of local caterers includes Pickle Shack and Mulberry Catering Co, both family-run businesses using independent suppliers and seasonal produce. Both work hard to ensure minimal food wastage.

HAREFIELD BARN, CREDITON, DEVON

Although it’s known for its fabulous views and outside space, it’s easy to forget that Harefield Barn is also perfect for winter weddings. The barn is based on a family-run farm amid the beautiful Mid-Devon countryside, just a 10-minute drive from Exeter. The owners are committed to making each day a relaxed and unique experience for each couple, so the number of weddings each year is limited, and the use of Harefield Barn and its grounds is exclusive.

For winter weddings, The Tallet is a dedicated ceremony room, so you don’t need to worry about what the British weather may be doing outside. The vaulted ceiling and flexible lighting provide a calm, chapel-like atmosphere in which to exchange vows. Licensed for up to 100 people, The Tallet can be used alongside the spacious bar and gallery areas, providing plenty of space. Underfloor heating keeps it warm and cosy during the winter and there’s nothing quite like watching the logs crackle in the wood burner whilst enjoying a drink in The Sawpit Bar.

Holding a wedding at Harefield Barn means that couples have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the experience, as their extended hire period

gives them the entire day beforehand to decorate and prepare. They also have free choice of their own suppliers (including caterers) to create a celebration personal to them.

There are so many fabulous winter styling ideas to choose from. Why not make the most of the high-beamed ceiling in the Main Hall and suspend twinkling lights overhead, or take advantage of Christmas and style the venue with decorations? Guests can also enjoy toasted marshmallows around the firepit with festive mulled wine or cider.

LOVIN’

Helen and Phil enjoyed a country marquee wedding with a purple, grey and sage green theme Images courtesy of KJP Photography
26
Helen Jayne Parkin, 31, married Phillip Arthur Daniels, 50, on 16th July 2022 at the Church of St John the Baptist, East Down in North Devon. This was followed by a marquee reception held at their home farm in Combe Martin.

Helenand Phil met through friends of friends on a night out in Barnstaple in 2011. Helen tells us, “He was tall, dark and handsome with plenty of charm and personality!” Phil adds, “I was instantly drawn to Helen’s gorgeous eyes and thought what a little stunner! We got talking and hit it off right away, sharing similar interests in farming, countryside sports and socialising with our friends. We enjoyed several dates and 11 years later, here we are!”

The couple became engaged when Phil proposed in January 2020 in their favourite holiday destination of Tenerife. “Phil did very well hiding the ring until the second day of our holiday,” Helen says. “After enjoying a long walk, we got back to the hotel as the sun was going down and enjoyed a glass of sangria whilst taking pictures of the sunset. Without any expectation, Phil suddenly asked me to be his wife. Of course, I said yes after crying happy tears!”

SETTING THE SCENE

Being a traditional couple, Helen and Phil both wanted to be married in church. “We live in the parish of East Down that’s home to a beautiful church,” Phil tells us. “We wanted to host our reception at home and are lucky that Helen’s parents own the farm where we live so we were able to organise a marquee wedding keeping our fingers crossed for good weather! The field we used for the marquee boasts spectacular views across Exmoor and Dartmoor.”

Helen’s uncle Richard drove Helen and her father Steve to the church. “My uncle Alan and auntie Alf arranged the additional transport for our bridal party and decorated the cars with ribbon and flowers,” Helen says. “Phil and his best man, Nick arrived at the church in Nick’s uncle’s van via a quick stop at the pub en route! We were both a bit nervous but once the ceremony started, we relaxed and enjoyed every minute. Both the Rev’d. Rosie Austin and Rev’d Sue Davies-Fletcher took the service and did a fantastic job of making it fun, relaxed and very fitting for us as individuals. Everyone commented on how wonderful it was and Phil made everyone laugh when he started to read his vows to Rosie instead of addressing them to me!”

At their reception, Helen and Phil had round tables of eight guests. “Our table plan was designed with purple flowers, wheat and horseshoes which suited our country theme perfectly,” Helen says. “We made our centrepieces using logs that were cut, sanded and varnished by Phil. We displayed glass jars on top decorated with ribbon and hessian made by myself and my mum, Pam. These were filled with flowers provided by our florist and arranged by my sister-in-law. Our table names were traditional horseshoe-shaped stands welded together and spray-painted in rose gold. A card was placed in each horseshoe featuring the names of the fields on the farm including The Moor and Stone Field. We kept our favours simple by filling small boxes with sweets and small packets of personalised love hearts.”

The couple chose a three-tier fruit cake with royal icing that was made by a very good friend. “It was decorated with handmade iced flowers and real horseshoes,” Helen says. This was served to their guests after dinner which included plated roast beef, chicken or spinach and feta tart as the main course followed by a trio of desserts. “The service by Liz White and her incredible catering team was faultless,” says Helen.

Gratton’s Butchers provided a delicious hog roast for the evening. “Liz put together a mix of brownies, rocky road cakes and meringues to accompany this and we had a cheese board and the wedding cake cut for our guests,” Helen says.

Helen and Phil decorated the marquee with bunting in shades of purple, green and grey with help from their bridesmaids, family and friends. “Purple paper lanterns were suspended from

the ceiling of the marquee along with fairylights and chandeliers that lit up the space. We had bottles filled with lights which shone in the evening and solar lights and more bunting provided a boundary to the marquee area. We placed straw bales outside for everyone to sit on which looked fantastic! Phil painted a pallet outlining the order of the day and made the wedding signs so that our guests could find their way to the farm.”

LOOKING THE PART

Helen wore a Mori Lee gown called Saskia. “I fell in love with its sleek, sophisticated silhouette which was very flattering,” she tells us. “I wasn’t sure whether I wanted lace detail or plain fabric but this dress offered it all! It featured Chantilly lace panelling down the sides, a beautiful illusion back, a sweeping neckline and it was scattered with sequins that sparkled in the light. The long train was impractical but I loved and embraced it! As soon as I put it on I knew it was the one for me. My mum, Pam and stepdaughter, Hollie were there with me and they loved it too. I teamed it with a full-length veil which was the same length as the train and decorated with crystals.”

Helen’s bridal sandals were perfect for a hot summer’s day and very comfortable. “I lasted all day and night wearing them!” she tells us. “They had a blue gem underneath which was my something blue and I also wore a pair of delicate drop earrings and a bracelet borrowed from my maid-of-honour, Debbie as my something old and something borrowed.

The bridal boutique did a fabulous job with my mum’s dress knowing immediately what style would suit her. She decided on a fitted grey and ivory dress by Veni Infantino with a matching jacket.”

Phil’s best man, Nick along with his brother Chris, son Callum, nephew Daniel and Helen’s dad, Steve all wore the same dark-grey suits with grey tweed check waistcoats. Phil tells us, “I knew I wanted a dark-grey suit and chose purple ties and pocket handkerchiefs to match Helen’s choice of colour for the bridesmaids’ dresses. I also wore a pocket watch which was a wonderful gift from Helen on the day engraved with our wedding date, time and the words ‘Please meet Miss Parkin – 16th July 2022, 2 pm – and leave with Mrs Daniels”.

The couple’s bridesmaids were Helen’s sister Gemma, Phil’s daughter Hollie and Helen’s cousin Hayley. Their maid-of-honour was Debbie. “Their purple floor-length gowns were all the same halterneck styles,” Helen says. “We gifted them bracelets to wear and they chose the rest of their jewellery, hairstyles and shoes themselves. We also gave them personalised robes to wear while we all got ready.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Phil made Helen’s horsebox into a homemade photo booth which was a great hit with their guests. “We captured plenty of fun photographs and hired a double-decker bus for the bar which was cool! It was fun climbing up on the top deck to see the surrounding views - you could even see the sea!” Helen says.

The couple hired a live band to kick-start the evening and they performed until late. “They played a varied mix of songs which suited all ages. When they finished, our DJ Chris took over playing 90’s classics and dancefloor anthems to keep the party going until the early hours!” Helen says. “It was amazing to see the dance floor full and everyone having a great time. It was funny watching everyone stagger out of the marquee afterwards and we both stayed on drinking red wine and eating cheese and biscuits until 5 am after everybody had left. We always planned to be the last ones to leave the marquee and once it was quiet, we strolled back down the lane to our house with the sun just starting to rise.”

Emma and Jamie met through Jamie’s brother Sammy and Emma’s best friend Lewis. “We had seen each other on a few nights out previously but had never spoken until I attended Jamie’s 25th birthday,” Emma tells us. “As soon as we spoke, that was it! Ten years later we have three sons together and are married. Sammy and Lewis have a lot to be thanked for!”

Jamie proposed to Emma in St. Ives when she was 38 weeks pregnant with their second child. “I thought we were going for a chilled weekend in Camelford where my parents have a holiday

lodge but Jamie convinced me to take a day trip to St. Ives and made us park in the car park that was furthest away from the town in the middle of November!” Emma says. “We walked to a spot overlooking Porthmeor Beach where both of our families were standing holding a large banner saying ‘Emma will you marry me?’ It was completely unexpected and a happy shock - now I know why he was so adamant that I bought my hospital bag with me!”

Here, Emma tells us all about their celebration which was styled with a green and white theme.

33 REAL WEDDINGS
Emma and Jamie Dean married on 21st May 2022 at Knightor Winery in Saint Austell, Cornwall.

We wanted a relaxed wedding with nothing too formal and Knightor Winery offered that. We loved the fact that we were able to hold the entire day outside if we wanted to.

I loved getting ready with my bridesmaids on the morning of the wedding wearing our personalised robes.

I felt lucky to have my best friend and ‘bride’s man’ as my make-up artist making the morning feel much more chilled.

My dad seeing me in my dress for the first time was a wonderful moment I won’t forget.

We seated our guests on hay bales which looked great and suited our outdoor theme.

Having our four-year-old son as the ring bearer was so cute and he’s still very proud of himself now!

We displayed milk churns of flowers to decorate the arbour and the courtyard after the ceremony.

The theme for the wedding styling was plenty of foliage and white flowers so we carried this through with our table plan and welcome sign. Our table names were after places in Cornwall.

34

We used corks as place card holders because we got married in a winery – they doubled up as keepsakes for our guests.

We suspended white lanterns hanging from the beams of the barn where we held our wedding breakfast - they transformed the room.

My bouquet was stunning and packed full of blooms. Our bridesmaids carried mini versions of mine.

We had a semi-naked wedding cake decorated with fresh flowers from our florist and a few macarons in the colours of the bridesmaids’ dresses. It tasted delicious!

Not only did the venue look beautiful, but the team also offered many different catering options. We chose to have a barbecue as our wedding breakfast which tasted great and filled everyone up!

For dessert, we hired an ice cream tricycle to serve ice cream in the courtyard which was a hit with our guests! For our evening food, we had Cornish Pasties - you can’t visit Cornwall without having a pasty!

We had trestle tables with ruscas foliage centrepieces running down the centre of each one dotted with tea lights in jam jars which looked romantic.
35 REAL WEDDINGS

Everybody loved our Doom Bar! We decided to give drink tokens to each guest as favours. We ordered acrylic tokens with our names on them and placed them in gold envelopes

I wore a pair of cuff earrings that my sister gifted me, a blue Swarovski crystal bracelet that my parents gave to me on the morning of the wedding and an elegant crystal hair accessory.

I wore an Essence of Australia dress (style number D2840). It was an A-line gown with a high-leg split in the shimmery underskirt which sold it to me!

I treated myself to a pair of Charlotte Mills bridal shoes after falling in love with them and they were so comfortable that I managed to wear them all day.

I was given a silver horseshoe to hold that was very sentimental.

The bridesmaids wore Dessy dresses in the shade of Desert Rose. Our seamstress added belts to the dresses using similar detailing to that on my dress.

Jamie wore a navy flannel suit with a grey checked waistcoat that was different to those worn by the rest of the groomsmen.

The groomsmen wore the same suit as Jamie with a matching waistcoat to their suit. Their ties and pocket squares were the matching material to Jamie’s waistcoat and our three sons who were our three best men wore the same suits as their daddy!

We had a local band perform in the courtyard during the afternoon which sounded great. The sun was shining and it was better than we had ever imagined it could be, a real highlight of the day.

He also wore brown brogues and a cool pair of cufflinks!

THE DREAM TEAM

We performed our first dance outside in the courtyard which was fun and unexpected!

Katie and Ben created a colourful wedding at Cornwall’s Kehelland Trust Images courtesy of So Natural Photography

Katie and Ben Nicholas married on 28th May 2022 at the Kehelland Trust in Cornwall.

Katie and Ben met via an online dating app. “I was attracted to Katie’s eyes and smile,” Ben tells us. “After our first date, it was love at first sight for me!” Katie was attracted to Ben and found him an interesting person to talk to. “I was excited to see where our relationship would go,” she says.

The couple became engaged when Ben proposed to Katie on 4th April 2021. “It was at Carn Marth,” Katie tells us. “Ben suggested going for a walk there and said he was going to take his wetsuit and enjoy for a swim. We found a spot to sit with our two-month-old son and Ben asked me whether I thought he could touch the bottom of the lake before taking a dip. When he reached the middle of the lake, he dived under the water. When he came back up, he told me that he had found something and swam over to the side where I was sitting. He got out of the water with something in his hand and before I could see what it was, he was down on one knee with an engagement ring! I burst into tears and said ‘yes’ and it turns out that Ben had sneaked the ring into the water on his baby finger and nervously swam with it, hoping it wouldn’t fall off!” Ben adds, “I was a bit embarrassed when Katie started crying and screaming at the side of the water when other people were quietly fishing!”

SETTING THE SCENE

Katie and Ben loved the Kehelland Trust in Cornwall because it offered a mostly outdoor venue, surrounded by nature that would give their wedding a wild and authentic atmosphere. “We liked the fact that it was a blank canvas that we could make our own, but it didn’t need too much styling because it was already naturally beautiful,” the couple tell us. “It supports a local trust providing social and therapeutic horticulture tasks for adults with learning and physical disabilities which was a positive factor.”

On the day, Katie, her dad and her bridesmaids arrived at the venue in a VW Campervan called Lola. The couple’s ceremony was a memorable moment for both of them. “Watching Katie walk up the aisle in the apple orchard with her dad was an amazing moment,” Ben says. “There was a buzzard circling overhead at that point and I had the feeling that this was exactly where I was meant to be.” Katie adds, “Watching our two sons Mawgan, aged nine and Jory, aged one coming up the aisle together was something I’ll never forget. Mawgan pulled Jory along in a wooden cart which we made from reclaimed wood.”

The couple’s summer wedding enjoyed a laid-back vibe with no formal sit-down meal and was decorated with a pretty pastel theme. “We enjoyed a buffet during the day and Cornish pasties in the evening and our guests were invited to bring their own alcohol,” Katie explains. “We strung bunting everywhere and had a crisp wall made by my mum, Julie, which went down a storm! All of our signage was handmade by myself and Ben using recycled wood from a pallet. Our guest board was handmade by Ben and is an amazing keepsake instead of a traditional guest book - we also made the photo booth out of recycled pallets.”

The couple chose wildflower seeds wrapped in individual brown envelopes with their own stamp on them as favours. “We placed them in a wooden wheelbarrow with a sign that said take one and watch love grow. We chose wildflowers in pink, green and purple as our flower

varieties that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses that were grown, and arranged by the team at the venue.”

The couple’s four-tier cake followed the pastel colour palette with a purple chocolate-flavoured tier at the bottom, a pink vanilla-flavoured layer on top of that, a green raspberry and white chocolate-flavoured tier on this and an ivory top tier that was lemon-flavoured. “My nan also made her traditional fruit cake which tasted delicious,” Katie says.

LOOKING THE PART

Katie wore a Maggie Sottero dress called Macey. “I chose it because I felt great wearing it and it was a flattering style,” she tells us. “It’s nothing like what I thought I would pick but I fell in love with it and nothing else compared to it. I wore it with a pair of colourful shoes by Irregular Choice that are not your average bridal shoes. They had a photograph of my great auntie Dorothy who passed away in 2020.”

Ben chose a casual outfit consisting of a white long-sleeved shirt, a pair of stone-coloured chinos, braces and a sage-green bow tie. “Anyone who knows Ben well will know that this was a smart look for him!” Katie says. “Our groomsmen wore the same as him but we had three colour choices for the bow ties that matched the bridesmaids’ dusky pink, green and mauve multi-way dresses. The buttonholes were all made on-site by the talented team at the Kehelland Trust.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The couple had great weather on the day so all of their guests spent time outside chatting and playing on the lawn. “We hired various lawn games and had ball pools and slides for the children although some of the adults loved playing with these too!” Katie says. “During the evening, we had a DJ and my grandad, George, had our guests in tears by singing two lovely songs.” Ben adds, “Katie and her dad did a surprise dance for everyone which started slow and then burst into a version of We Are Family by Sister Sledge! No one knew about it and it got everyone up dancing.”

SAY CHEERS TO DEVONIA’S SUCCESS

Looking for a non-alcoholic alternative this Christmas? The sustainable Devon spring water company is celebrating a bumper summer of sales – and saving nearly 150,000kg of glass from going to landfill. The company, which puts sustainability at the centre of everything it does, has sold 250,000 bottles of water and reused an impressive 201,000.

It’s the only spring water company in the south of England with a business model focused on reusing glass bottles again and again. Washing and refilling the bottles use just 6% of the energy required to recycle glass, reducing CO2 by 94%. Plus, there’s no plastic pollution going into the world’s oceans.

Over Devonia’s 18 years in business, the company has saved a whopping 144,995kg of glass from going to landfill, by collecting and reusing its bottles from hotels, pubs, cafes, restaurants, special events and private customers across Devon. After adding 35 new trade customers to its books this summer, including 15 wedding and events venues, Devonia is on track to double the size of its operations in 2023. The company wants to move to a larger facility that will allow for more organic growth and is looking to hire new staff, as well as purchase new vans and machinery.

The Telegraph has recently declared Devon the greatest county in England, according to science. With the winning combination of the great outdoors and delicious local food and drink, it’s hard to argue. Say cheers with a delicious South Devon Southside cocktail recipe, featuring Devonia sparkling water.

Devonia’s water is bottled at source from a spring that bubbles up on the edge of a meadow near the villages of Beeson and Beesands, less than a mile from the sea. With a natural soft taste, both still and sparkling products are available in 330ml or 750ml bottles.

As well as being a sustainable business, Devonia supports the Dartmoor Rescue Group’s Ashburton team, of which owner Neil Graham has been a full member for years. By purchasing Devonia water, customers are also supporting the incredible work of the mountain rescue team.

VICTORIA SEWART GALLERY REVEALS NEW WEDDING AND ENGAGEMENT RINGS

At the Victoria Sewart Gallery in Plymouth, an experienced team of jewellers are on hand to help couples pick the perfect engagement and wedding rings. As well as showcasing a wonderful selection of contemporary jewellery, the gallery also accommodates a wide range of hand-crafted rings from more than fifty UK-based jewellery designers.

Over Easter every year, the gallery runs an exhibition called Ringing the Changes, a celebration of rings from various designers producing everything from modern and contemporary pieces to traditional and sculptural rings featuring precious stones, art pieces and much more!

Creative couples can design and make their own rings by booking a jewellery workshop course which is a truly memorable experience. With more than 20 years of teaching experience, Victoria will guide them through each step of the process in a one-day workshop held above the gallery in her purpose-built studio where they will hand-craft their very own rings from start to finish. The question is, do they make their own rings or each others?

59 IDEAS AND INSPIRATION

Walking in a winter wonderland

Want to plan a seasonal wedding but unsure where to start? We’ve put together a guide to help you create the ultimate celebration

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME

One of the first things you should do is decide on a colour palette. This time of year has some wonderful hues available, including greens, reds, golds, blues and silvers. Choose one or two and stick to them. If you try and include every colour, it may look overwhelming and messy. If you want to go against tradition, an up-and-coming trend that we’ve seen here at County Wedding Magazines HQ is jewel tones. These can add warmth to your venue and can be incorporated into your glassware, candles and cutlery.

DECIDING ON A VENUE

Picking a venue can be overwhelming, especially if you have a restrictive criteria. Look through social media and magazines to get some inspiration, and once you have an idea of how many people you want to attend and the area you want to get married in, you can begin narrowing down your search. The weather, as we all know, can be pretty unpredictable, so if you’re going for an outdoor ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan in case it rains or snows.

FINDING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

If you’re tying the knot in the middle of winter, chances are it’s going to be pretty cold. Take this into consideration when choosing your dress, as you might start to feel chilly in a sleeveless gown. Those of you thinking of wearing a suit, choose warm fabrics and colours that will tie in with your theme.

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Accessories are your best friend when it comes to winter weddings. Do you desperately want a strapless gown but don’t want to freeze? Opt for a cover-up or bolero to keep you warm. These will tie in nicely with your theme and look super cute in those all-important photographs.

60

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES WARM

If you’re worried your guests might feel the chill, supply blankets and slippers. A firepit is another way of keeping everyone toasty while also adding a fun element to your day. If you want to take it to the next level, supply some marshmallows – yum!

MUST-HAVE FLOWERS

Whether you opt for an arch, grand centrepieces, an oversized bouquet or a hanging masterpiece, your flowers will create a statement in your photographs. There are a range of wintry blooms to choose from, including roses, ranunculus, berries and much more. With a strong emphasis on eco-friendly weddings, ask your florist if their flowers are grown in the UK and if they use eco-products where possible.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE

If you’re big fans of Christmas like us here at CWM, why not lean into the time of year and incorporate aspects of it into your winter theme? You could add a Christmas tree in your reception room, have festive-coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, use reindeers as table names, give your guests baubles as favours or even ask Santa to come and visit the little ones.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Food is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, so it’s important to pick something that fits your theme and personalities. With the cold weather outside, think of warming dishes such as soup or a roast dinner. You could serve mulled wine on arrival and create a fun hot chocolate station for the evening.

THE PERFECT BLEND

How do we celebrate the creation of a new blended family and how do we incorporate our stepchildren into our wedding ceremony?

Meet the expert: Sabine Smith is a wedding celebrant who creates bespoke ceremonies in Cornwall and Devon, working with couples to ensure their celebration is exactly how they want it to be.

Sabine says: In the UK, about 16% of dependent children are living in blended families where a household has stepparents and stepsiblings. For a modern blended family, working with a wedding celebrant can be instrumental in ensuring that each member of the family feels valued, enabling them to build strong bonds for the future. Your wedding ceremony is at the heart of your special day so here are my top tips to ensure that every member of the family feels included:

 A Sand Ceremony is a beautiful way of demonstrating the coming together of the individual members of the family to celebrate a new blended one. It not only symbolises the unity of the couple, but also the unity of their children. By joining together the different coloured sands in a vessel of choice, it symbolises that everybody has significance. As each grain of sand is poured, it instantly blends, signifying that you’ll never be able to separate them again; the family will be united and joined together as one blended family. My personal favourite!

 What could be more sustainable and in touch with nature than planting a tree together? This is a favourite idea for outdoor and nature-loving couples and their children. The tree can be planted at the wedding venue or the family home and together, you can nurture and care for it, watching it grow over the years as a family.

Everyone loves hearing words of appreciation and love. Couples can create personal vows and promises for each other and lovingly involve the children who are adapting to being part of a new blended family,

along with a personal gift or a piece of bespoke jewellery. I love it when I see a thank you or a love you note hand-written to one another and placed into a memory box. 

A hand-fasting ceremony is a perfect way to symbolise the coming together of the different family members to tie the knot on the special day. Each person places a different coloured ribbon over joined hands during the ceremony. With the help of the celebrant, couples will create a lasting visual keepsake and memory to treasure in the future. This is a joy-filled and colourful way to celebrate which will make everyone feel included. 

If you and your blended family members are the creative types, why not make a painting together on the day using your favourite colours and textures? A little bit like the sand ceremony mentioned earlier, the result will be colourful and give a visual symbol of the blended family that you have created which can involve everyone. 

A Fingerprint Tree is a symbolic ritual that I recently used to show the commitment of the entire family towards the newly formed, blended one. Everyone places their name and a print of their thumb on to the family tree as an everlasting keepsake of the day and the ceremony. This can be replicated and sent to close family members as a loving memory of this special moment. 

Children love having a special and important job during the wedding ceremony of their parents whether it be the job of page boy or flowergirl. Another idea can be to allow the children to sign the commitment certificate after the ceremony. I believe the most important responsibility for a child of a blended family is being the ring-bearer. Taking care of the beautiful bands which symbolise eternity and which remind the couple every day of the love they possess for one another will make them very proud and give them the feeling of being part of this unity and love.

Please can you give us some ideas for my soon-to-be husband’s wedding suit for our summer celebration next year?

Meet the expert: George Arkwright is the brand development manager at Zebel Bespoke which offers a bespoke suit tailoring experience with a one-to-one service, tailoring specialists and skilled craftspeople on hand. They also provide a full in-house tailoring service on pre-existing garments and have branches in Exeter and London.

George says: Zebel Bespoke, a premier purveyor of fine bespoke suiting is here to guide you through the latest trends for men’s attire at weddings in 2023. The first is the colour green which is very much in vogue. Whether it’s sage green or forest green, fabrics like wool, linen and thicker ones like tweed in this stunning shade are becoming very popular.

After a few years of working from home, and with a rise in laid-back, rustic-inspired weddings, many grooms-to-be are looking for something a little less formal for their wedding suiting. They’re straying from the blues, greys and blacks in favour of something a little more playful, eye-catching and informal.

Double-breasted suiting has been making a comeback for several years but seems to be reaching its peak now. The wrap-around nature of double-breasted suiting provides length and contour, allowing more freedom to the cut and styling of the trouser. Adding that refined ‘70s edge to the look, we think double-breasted suiting is a must this season!

Pinstripes are traditionally businesswear - sticking with muted colours

and a white stripe, we can understand that customers see this as more Wall Street than wedding wear. However, recently several clothiers have been making beautiful patterns with an interesting combination of colours and styles. Asymmetric stripes, contrasting light block and stripe combinations and multi-coloured stripes have all been seen and we think that styled correctly, pinstripes can look fantastic standing at the altar! Techwear has also been a growing trend for several years now. The marriage of function with fashion has always existed in a masculine fashion, and wedding suiting is no exception. With a belted, cinched waist providing a striking silhouette, and the addition of pockets for a rough and ready look, this style of safari jacket generally differs from traditional men’s suiting, and we think this is an exciting elevation of standard wedding wear.

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. The texture offers lightweight full coverage that blends in so well it’s virtually undetectable, and the smart doubleended format features a fine tip for precise application with a foam tip for blending. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection. Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

Editor Claire Ridley speaks to bridal designer Sarah Treble about wedding dress trends for the new year

Meet the expert: Sarah Treble is an Exeter-based bespoke bridal and evening wear designer with more than 20 years of experience in the wonderful world of weddings. She began designing and making couture wedding gowns and garments for private clients, moving from her London atelier to her Devon studio in 2009. Each piece is handmade using the highest quality fabrics and couture methods such as hand-embroidery and bespoke lace making.

Sarah tells us: Trend-wise, I have plenty of bridal dress commissions for 2023 from two different ends of the design spectrum. One is the romantic look with full, layered skirts decorated with exquisite embellishments, plunging necklines and lace sleeves (these are extremely popular!) Then there’s the emergence of simple, clean silhouettes and trouser suits or jumpsuits. I’m also noticing an interest in prints, particularly floral, that look almost painterly like.

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

86

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.

Pure luxury

After hearing about The Belfry Hotel & Resort, an award-winning hotel in the heart of Sutton Coldfield with three world-class golf courses, 300+ bedrooms, multiple restaurants and a luxurious spa, I was excited to experience it first-hand.

The host of The Ryder Cup four times, more than any other venue in the world, The Belfry Hotel & Resort has gone down in history as the backdrop to some extremely notable golf moments and has hosted its fair share of famous names and faces. Less than 10 miles from Birmingham Airport, International Train Station, Alexander Stadium and Birmingham’s NEC, it’s surrounded by prominent local landmarks, and is in a prime position for any travelling guests who need a place to lay their heads.

A ROYAL WELCOME

Walking through the double doors, I was met with a stunning entrance adorned with rich fabrics and beautiful floral displays. Walking past the generous amount of guest seating, the white portico pillars and vibrant yellow neon sign for the Brabazon Bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the quirky chandelier that was taking centre stage.

The very helpful Ryan, who was working at the check-in desk, detailed exactly where we needed to go to find our room. As we walked through

the wood-claded corridors lined with busy event and conference suites, we found the lift up to the second floor in search of the Presidential Suite. The largest and most impressive of all their overnight accommodation, the suite offers a family-sized living room complete with comfortable sofas, a dining table, a mini-kitchen space with all the comforts of home, and two separate balconies with views of the world-class golf courses.

The bedroom had luxurious plush armchairs, a desk, a luscious kingsized bed, and quite possibly the biggest en-suite bathroom I’ve ever seen! Equipped with his and hers wash basins, a free-standing bath, a spacious shower cubicle, and two separate toilets, it’s safe to say you won’t be waiting for your turn to use the bathroom.

REST AND RELAXATION

Picking up our swim bags, we headed to the spa to try out the Fire & Ice Experience. Here, Michelle gave us a guided tour through the varied selection of 12 bio thermal rooms, all designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses. Knowing that this spa had been named a finalist in the Best Day Spa category for the Good Spa Guide Awards 2022, I was excited for the experience to begin. Starting with a foot spa and moving through the hot and cold steam, sauna, and shower rooms,

we experienced both the shock and delight that came with such extreme temperatures – it was divine! Our personal favourites were the Igloo Room, which offers chilled walls and an ever-filling ice bucket for a body massage, and the Aroma and Crystal Steam Rooms, both heavenlyscented spaces designed to cleanse and purify.

From here, we popped down to the iconic Brabazon Bar, which was crowned winner of the Hotel Bar of the Year category at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022, for a cheeky cocktail (or three) and found ourselves transported back in time. The bar, rich in bottle green leathers with portico pillars, showcases a breathtaking raised glass ceiling that is a sight to behold.

READY, SET, PLAY!

After hearing numerous tales of woe from my husband about how he’s always the worst player on his group golfing trips, we both jumped at the chance of hitting a few golf balls at the driving range.

Despite the brilliant Toptracer technology allowing us to see our flight paths and providing data to work on our swing technique, it’s safe to say that we won’t be challenging Tiger Woods to a match any time soon!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort offers an impressive selection of restaurants, each a little different from the other, and we were lucky enough to dine in the fabulous Ryder Grill. The buffet here is one of the most deliciouslooking and gourmet-sounding selections I’d ever seen, but since my hubby is lactose-intolerant and vegetarian, we decided to choose from the à la carte menu.

Having made our selections, we were treated to a stunning salmon, beetroot, and wasabi starter adorned with edible flowers and a vibrant carpaccio of tomatoes. The main course, generous in size, was a seared sea trout with garlic potatoes and a very artistic fennel bhaji. The highlight of the meal was the extra dessert that our wonderful waitress Annie brought out when she realised we were struggling to decide. We scoffed a chocolate torte, a cheese selection and a sticky toffee banana bread – yum!

Our night ended on a high after we made our way back to our Presidential Suite and fell into blissful slumbers in a bed that felt lighter than air.

We had a wonderful time at The Belfry Hotel & Resort and are looking forward to coming back soon!
