Floral wonders

EDITORIAL

Senior Editor Melissa Cullen | 01376 535 611 melissa.cullen@county.wedding

Helloeveryone and welcome to another issue of Your East Anglian Wedding. As always, our June/July issue is full of inspiration, but my favourite part is the flowers feature. When I got married last year choosing the right florist was really important to me. I wanted flowers to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme, but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than seven years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet which was exactly what I wanted. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our vision with them. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting your florists face-to-face if possible.

Sarah Ellis | 01376 535 602 sarah.ellis@county.wedding

The only thing I regret about my wedding flowers is not having them preserved afterwards. I attempted to do it at home using resin, and it was a complete disaster! If you have the budget to have your flowers preserved, I would highly recommend it. The day goes by in a flash, so you’ll love having something to look at regularly as a reminder of your special day.

KIMBERLEY HALL, NR18 0RS 01603 759 447 | www.kimberleyhall.co.uk

A romantic Queen Anne house built in 1712, Kimberley Hall offers breathtaking views of a vast lake and private park designed by Capability Brown. The house is distinguished by a classical redbrick façade and a symphony of colour when illuminated at night. It boasts central pediments, curved colonnades, wings, turrets, and architectural features that provide it with its unique character.

When choosing this big-day venue, you will benefit from a wine and food tasting, a choice of caterers, in-house advice and a professional wedding planner. What’s more, there’s ample accommodation for 40 guests in the main house or cottages on the estate, including four-poster beds and a Drummonds double shower in the bridal suite, which has a raised bath to enjoy spectacular views of the romantic lake and beautiful landscape.

Celebrate in style

The Music Room, where the wedding ceremony traditionally takes place, is a light and elegant space with historic plaster work that connects onward to the garden via a beautiful spiral staircase capped by a coffered dome. The garden may be accessed via a hexagonal room adjacent to the Music Room that links to the stylish West Wing entertainment space via a spacious curved colonnade and contemporary bar. Your ceremony may also take place as a duo ceremony on the rear manicured lawn.

Multiple options exist for the reception, both inside and outside on the terraced garden among the yew trees overlooking the historic park with its romantic lake and ancient oaks.

If your numbers exceed the maximum capacity of the West Wing, then a marquee can be hired amongst the ancient yew trees in the rear garden.

We love...

New for 2023 is an underground nightclub with vaulted rooms in the cellars with a late licence to go beyond midnight.

NEWMARKET Renewed in

Myhusband and I were keen to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary with a romantic night away. We go away every year, even for a night, to reconnect, reflect and look forward to the year ahead – and this year was no exception. In the heart of Suffolk, the Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa is a four AA red star hotel nestled in three acres of manicured gardens in Newmarket, the ancestral home of British horseracing. We’d popped in to the town prior to our arrival, and it was hard to believe that mere minutes down the road was a serene hotel setting. On approach, the pretty white building flanked by a grand driveway, shrubbery and trees was certainly smile-inducing, it felt in the middle of nowhere.

Of fering luxury throughout, the hotel has seamlessly combined the old and the new, modern extensions and sumptuous aesthetics are sympathetic to its Georgian 18th-century beginnings. Standing in reception, stylish yet welcoming, the friendly staff gave us such a warm welcome that I immediately felt relaxed and ready to enjoy the stay…

THE SUITE SPOT

Heading through the hotel to find our little haven for the night, we ended up outside the Mews; a two-story building adjacent to the hotel – by only a few steps – it comes with its own parking space and views over the neighbouring famous trainer’s yard. The luxury Mews comprises of one executive suite, two superior rooms and a private dining area, perfect for groups. The exclusivity of it certainly got the excitement going to see what delights were in our room. With an upmarket home from home feel, our huge Executive Suite certainly didn’t disappoint with a resounding ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ upon opening the door. The staff had attentively left a welcome gift for our anniversary which made us feel super-special. The room was elegant, charming and welcoming, with more space than we could need; as was the bed, we laughed how it took a couple of rolls to meet in the middle! All bedrooms have been fitted with many deluxe flourishes including Bose speakers and a Nespresso coffee machine, and the Executive Suite also features an elegant free-standing bath, a walk-in rainfall shower and grand double sink – happy anniversary indeed! Normally we’d check in to a hotel, dump our bags and head out exploring but we were both so taken with the room we said let’s make the most of it, which says it all.

TO DINE FOR

The only thing that would’ve dragged us away from our suite that day was the excitement of dinner! Both complete foodies, we’d been thinking about dining in the hotel’s two AA Rosette restaurant since the morning. The award-winning Squires Restaurant has become a renowned

destination; providing a modern culinary experience, the artistic décor, sumptuous furnishings and mood lighting provided the ideal ambience for such a special occasion.

Casting an eye over the menu was a delight, everything was jumping out ‘eat me, eat me’: pork belly, oysters, smoked haddock, pigeon wellington, pumpkin tortellini, Herdwick Hogget, Chateaubriand ‒ the choice was certainly tantalising those tastebuds. Using only the finest seasonal ingredients, and wherever possible sourced locally within a 50-mile radius of the hotel, we picked for starters the pork belly bao and line caught mackerel, followed by Sutton hoo chicken and poached plaice. My ever-so professional analysis of food that I love is when every mouthful is an absolute explosion of flavour, and that I’m silent immersed in the meal except for reinforcing ‘yummy’ noises. We both agreed, it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had, and we’ve been lucky to have eaten in some rather lovely places. Our waitress was a true delight, even asking the kitchen to add a special ‘Happy Anniversary’ message to our dessert plate, her whole demeanour contributed to the pleasant evening. A toast to us, with our chosen cocktails, we spent some time enjoying the atmosphere of the restaurant before retreating to the Mews!

SOME TLC

For that extra piece of luxury, the 5-bubble-rated award-winning spa sits adjacent to the hotel, boasting a rooftop hot tub, hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna, and experiential showers. The Spa also offers an extensive spa menu including massage, nails, Mii tanning and advanced facial treatments and more across 10 treatment rooms. What’s more, it can adapt treatments to suit all guests, offering a select menu to support Wellness for Cancer and spa clientele. Not only boasting luxury facilities there’s also an impressive Spa Lounge where guests can relax with a glass of fizz or favourite book on comfy loungers ‒ there’s also healthy (and indulgent!) food and beverages to enjoy in-between treatments!

The hotel itself also provides its own health and fitness club for staying guests, featuring a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment and the latest cardio and resistance training apparatus. Fully air-conditioned, the gym has a large flat screen TV and superb sound system. After a vigorous workout, you can take a swim in the tranquil 15-metre pool or relax in the spa bath, sauna and steam room. My hubby and I did take a look at the facilities, with every good intention of making use of them ‒ I packed my gym gear honest! ‒ but after mustering up just enough energy to wake up and enjoy our divine but hearty breakfast there just really wasn’t the motivation for a workout! But, my fitness instructor spouse said it looked like a really good gym so there’s an endorsement for you! We’ll be back!

Maite and Luke met online and years later they tied the knot at Happy Valley Norfolk

Images courtesy of Alex Grant Photo

Like most modern couples, Maite and Luke met online. “We are very different but complement each other well,” says Maite. “He is funny and never fails to make me laugh. He’s the rational aspect of our relationship, while I’m more fiery and creative.”

Luke popped the question at Maite’s family home in the South of France. “He knew the house meant a lot to us, and it was the last time we would be there as it was going to be sold,” shares the bride. “He gathered a group of our closest friends and proposed by the river behind the house underneath a beautiful bridge. It was very thoughtful and a total surprise. The engagement ring was made by a small jewellery studio in Cornwall who specialise in sand casting; he cast the engagement ring with Cornish sand and we collected some from the place where he proposed to use in our wedding rings as a souvenir.”

Here Maite shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

33 REAL WEDDINGS

I wanted to reflect nature as much as possible in our décor and chose a lot of plants, flowers and foliage. I wanted our guests to be blown away visually!

Buns Of Fun provided our beautiful wedding cake. The food was influenced by my South American roots and Luke’s Suffolk side of the family. My main inspiration was an English Garden with pastel colours. The menus were printed on seeded paper, and our guests received a seed kit and a spray blend to take home. Happy Valley Norfolk was the perfect setting for our dream outdoor wedding and had everything we wanted.
34

For the bridesmaids, I wanted to make sure they were all comfortable in what they were wearing, so I sent them a colour palette and stated the fabric I wanted, and they all chose what they wanted from that. It turned out perfect and we looked amazing as a whole.

For the evening, I wanted to go a bit more controversial and wear colour, so I chose a red muslin dress with a striking headpiece.

We both felt overwhelmed and incredibly content. Luke had this little kid’s smile on all day and it made me happy. We were blessed that all our guests got along together. Everyone was talking to each other despite coming from such different backgrounds or friendship groups.

I wore two different outfits from The Fall Bridal Ltd. My wedding dress was a beautiful off-white lace gown with balloon sleeves and an open back.
35 REAL WEDDINGS
Luke chose a navy suit that matched his groomsmen and white shoes.

Our suppliers did an incredible job, and everything felt so in tune. We had such a wonderful day, and after the wedding, we went on our honeymoon to Bali for 10 days. It was lovely and very relaxing.

I wanted to keep my guests on their toes. My main surprise was driving my dad down the aisle on a motorbike with a sidecar and then driving back with Luke after the ceremony. We also had Luke’s friend play some acoustic sea shanties at the end of the night, which turned out to be super popular.

JUST WHEN loveclicks

Izzy and Andrew started as friends, but their bond grew until they realised they were perfect for each other

Izzy and Andrew first laid eyes on each other at work.

“We share a similar sense of humour and a love for food, so we got on straight away,” says Izzy. “We became friends while working in a hotel and eventually moved to work in the same restaurant where we finally got together!”

Andrew proposed to Izzy at Wells-Next-The-Sea beach in early 2021. “We own a pub, so during lockdown, as we couldn’t work, we had a lot of free time, so we spent a lot of it walking along the beach,” shares the bride. “The entire beach was empty on the day Andrew proposed. It was just the two of us and our dog Franco on a sunny, chilly day.”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

39 REAL WEDDINGS

As soon as we saw Barn Drift, we knew it was the right place for us. We loved that we could hire the venue for a longer period so we wouldn’t have to rush the next morning to pack everything away, and the views were stunning.

Our cake from The Welly Boot Bakery was three tiers and made up of red velvet, chocolate and lemon.

Emma from Bayfield Catering provided our canapés and sitdown food. Emma and her staff went above and beyond to make sure all our guests had everything they wanted. The food was amazing, especially the canapés!

We kept the décor in the hangar simple, with an arch at the end of the aisle. This was kept simple so that it could be easily moved out of the way ready for the evening party. For our champagne reception, we moved into the house and made use of the gorgeous dining room. It had large bifold doors, and we were lucky enough with the weather to have them open.

Andrew and I chose a white, gold and dark green theme. We opted for wine bottles, spray painted gold, with green candles and flower arrangements as our centrepieces. We also had gold cutlery, charger plates and glasses with gold rims.

In the evening, we had a neon sign, a dancefloor and draping across the ceiling.

40

I wore a Madi Lane dress from City Brides Norwich for the main part of the day and changed into a Hope & Ivy gown for the evening. My hair was styled with a green velvet ribbon to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. My main dress was covered in sequins, it wasn’t what I expected to wear, but as soon as I put it on, I loved it.

We had a band called Bear Club perform in the evening, which everyone loved. They played a great mix of music and interacted with all of our guests!

The weather during the day was amazing, which meant our champagne reception could happen in the dining area with the bifold doors open. Everyone had plenty of space to move around and mix and it was so lovely to see everyone together.

We ended up moving house five days after our wedding, so we’ve delayed our honeymoon for now.

Andrew and his groomsmen wore navy suits with dark green ties. Luis Holden, our photographer, was incredible! He got stunning photos during the day and ceremony, and in the evening, he got stuck in with all our guests and captured the night perfectly! The bridesmaids chose beautiful dark green velvet dresses.

“The grounds at The Garden Barn were stunning and we were drawn to the rustic and intimate feel of the barn,” shares Emily. “We risked choosing an outside ceremony because the setting and backdrop were so breathtaking. The owners were lovely and offered so much support, which meant we could make it the day of our dreams. The Garden Barn allowed lots of flexibility, including what suppliers we could use which was another selling point as some venues have restrictions. My family has a small catering business called Poppies Catering, who provided the canapés, cake, hog roast and buffet. For late night snacks, we also had cupcakes, cheeses and traditional pork pies.”

The couple decided to keep the decorations simple so it didn’t draw attention away from the beauty of the barn. “We wanted people to sit where they felt most comfortable, so we didn’t create a table plan,” adds the bride. “We chose white tablecloths with navy runners across them and added clear gems to the tables so they looked like sprinkled diamonds. The flowers used on the tables were sourced from The Flower Shed in Isleham. We also made the groomsmen’s lapels using faux flowers and gave them a choice of Lego figures which they got to keep.

“We created a cupcake tower with a cake on top which was used for the traditional cutting of the cake,” explains Emily. “All of the cupcakes were made by a family friend who is well known in the community for her baking.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“I sourced my dress from Peter’s Bridal Warehouse in Soham, where they have hundreds of dresses and regularly get new ones in,” recalls Emily. “It was a one-off Italian dress with a sweetheart neckline and lace sleeves. I wanted to wear something completely different to what I would normally wear. It had a massive skirt and train, so I felt a veil would be too much. Instead, I paired it with the tiara my mum wore when she got married and blue sapphire earrings that matched my engagement ring.

“Craig went shopping with his mum, sister and groomsmen to get his suit,” continues Emily. “After visiting several shops, he ended up choosing a Moss Bros suit as they were able to accommodate a tailored fit without the need for a custom design. He chose a grey three piece so that if he wanted to remove his jacket, he would still feel smart on the day in just the waistcoat, and it separated him from the groomsmen.”

The bridesmaids wore chiffon dresses from Ever-Pretty. “I wanted a colour and shape that would complement everyone, so I chose navy as this also went well with Craig’s suit,” says the bride. “In case it was chilly, I purchased grey shawls for them to wrap around their shoulders.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

To keep everyone entertained, the couple hired a DJ from Vital Soundz & Lighting, who kept their guests dancing all night.

“We were both nervous and excited on the morning of the wedding,” shares Emily. “For me the worst past was the anticipation whilst in the car and right before the ceremony started, but it all went away once I saw Craig. At the end of the ceremony, when it comes to the ‘I dos’, Craig opted for a less traditional response and instead went for: ‘hell yeah’ – it’s a good thing we weren’t in a church!”

The couple had the perfect day thanks to many of their suppliers. “Our photographer, Brittany, was amazing,” explains Emily. “She made everything so easy and relaxed. There was also some secret planning she had done with my mum and some close friends to bring my horse for a surprise visit on the day. The venue owner, Emily, was also incredibly thoughtful; she put so many little touches in place and made sure everything went smoothly.

I will always be grateful to Emily; she made sure the barn was all ready for us and set up garden furniture as well as the seating for the ceremony. The whole set-up was great, there was space for people inside the barn, in the marquee and also out in the gardens. It made for a fun and relaxing atmosphere.

“Our families helped in the lead up to and on the day and we couldn’t have done it without them,” adds Emily. “The cars that the bridesmaids and I arrived in were all thanks to my friend Sarah who organised them as they belonged to her dad. He even dressed up as a chauffeur with a special hat and matched the ribbons on the car to my dress!”

HONEYMOON

“We have booked to go away to Cape Verde for two weeks next year as our official honeymoon, but in the week after the wedding, we had a mini-moon at Quy Mill Hotel & Spa, Cambridge, for a couple of days so that we could relax and just be together after all the festivities,” recalls the bride. “We also treated ourselves to a couple of pamper sessions.”

GOTHIC romance

Tracy and Neil met when they were teenagers, but slowly drifted apart until fate brought them back together

Images courtesy of Pengelly Photography

Tracy and Neil met when Tracy and her older sister were walking along the main road on Canvey Island. Neil and his friend stopped on their motorbikes to ask where a certain pub was and they got talking. “Neil was 17 and I was 13, but we quickly became friends doing everything together within our friendship group,” says Tracy. “The first thing I noticed about him with his shoulder length black hair and dark eyes. My teenage years were idyllic with Neil and our group of friends, but when Neil went to college, we seemed to drift apart. We stopped seeing each other and lost contact. I heard through mutual friends that he was working in America and had got married. I eventually got married too, but never forgot about Neil. Many years later, when our marriages were over, Neil

contacted my sister asking how I was and we started talking.” Their relationship blossomed and Neil asked Tracy to marry him over the phone while he was in America. “Neil moved back to England and we went to Hatton Garden to purchase our rings. That evening when we returned from Hatton Garden with my beautiful engagement ring and the wedding rings, we went to my mum and step dad’s house and Neil got down on one knee in front of me and my parents and proposed properly. It was a big surprise as he’d already proposed, but both my mum and I cried. It was a wonderful moment.”

Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

51 REAL WEDDINGS

We were looking for a venue where we would have exclusive use and that everyone could stay the night. It was important that the staff could see my vision and be able to adapt ideas so that we could achieve our perfect day. Tracy Cole from Hintlesham Hall was extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. The service we received from everyone at Hintlesham Hall was impeccable.

We chose to get married between Christmas and New Year as people were able to get the time off work more easily. I built our theme around my black lace wedding dress, then added red roses and gold hues to tie in with Hintlesham Hall’s décor.

Our centrepieces were clear glass chargers with gold beading and large black candelabra with cascading ivy and red roses.

Neil and I chose round tables that we named after Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Our cake was a Gothic design in a sepia colour; it had fruit layers infused with single-malt whisky. It was decorated with 3D trees and black branches, which formed an arch at the top that held two large fresh red rose buds. I designed the cake with the help of Terri from EriVica Cakes, who was amazing.

Neil and I sat on our own in front of a large fireplace, which we decorated with an off-centre flower display.

52

I wore a beautiful black lace gown called Zander by Sottero Midgley. I chose this style because I am not a ‘young’ bride, I like to wear black and it had a nude underskirt. I sourced it from TDR Bridal Birmingham as no one else could get it made and ordered from Italy for me. When it arrived, it was over two sizes too big, but my wonderful seamstress Heather worked over the course of six visits to completely tailor it to fit me.

Neil wore a bespoke tuxedo from Anthony Formal Wear with cufflinks that I bought for him for Christmas. When we first met, I gave him a St Christopher for his 18th birthday, which he had since lost, so for his groom’s present, I gave him a new gold St Christopher.

I had my future step-granddaughter as my flowergirl. She wore a beautiful dark nude dress with black embroidery, which complemented my dress.

Paul Arnold played the piano during the wedding breakfast; he was so good and our guests had a sing along with him in the orangery. We then had a DJ from Your Wedding Disco play our chosen music until the early morning.

I was excited to be marrying the love of my life and surprisingly relaxed. We were so happy that our friends and family enjoyed themselves, and although we had a wide range of age groups, everyone seemed to blend well and have fun.

Saying our vows was very memorable; we held hands and giggled and even kissed halfway through.

53 REAL WEDDINGS

My hairdresser, Sam Bigden, styled my hair amazingly. I have short hair, but he made it look thick and wavy, and I had a huge number of compliments.

The cake was perfect and numerous guests took pictures of it.

The whole experience was amazing, and family and friends are still talking about how unusual a wedding it was now.

At Christmas, my dog Luna snapped her cruciate ligament and broke off a piece of bone, so she was in the hospital during our wedding, so we did not go on a honeymoon as we have been nursing her back to health. We are going to Venice for a long weekend soon which we have planned together.

Local florists share their favourite seasonal flowers

“Dried flowers are a great way to add a wintry touch to your wedding. In this bridal bouquet, we used roses and bleached, soft ruscus.” –Andrew from Battersea Bloem.

“Here the bride wanted to incorporate whites and green into her flowers to highlight the time of year. We used roses, thistles, waxflowers, lisianthus and two types of eucalyptus and salal. Alternative seasonal flowers you could incorporate are eucharis, ornithogalum, protea, snowberries, hypericum along with seasonal foliage.” –Cheryl from Cheryls Flowers.

Welove flowers here at Your East Anglian Wedding, but with so many gorgeous blooms to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming. To help you create the perfect arrangement, we’ve asked local florists to share their favourite seasonal choices… www.cherylsflowers.co.uk

“Most couples have no idea what flowers are seasonally available and the truth is you don’t need to know; that’s why you put trust in your suppliers to do what they do best and guide you every step of the way. The first thing you should do when deciding on your flowers is create a moodboard. Use your wedding venue, colour palette and theme as an influence and put all your ideas in one place, so you can visualise what it will look like on the big day.” – Wendy from Blush & Bloom Florals.

“Use tall arrangements in places with high ceilings.” – Andrew from Battersea Bloem.

“During the winter months, there are fewer flowers naturally in season, but this is no reason not to have stunning arrangements on your big day. Combine beautiful seasonal foliage, berries and seed heads to create unique designs with lots of textures and colours that will delight your guests.” – Zoë from Zoë Bidwell Bespoke Flowers.

“In the above arrangement, we used a mixture of florals including tulips, lisianthus, clematis, allium and tanacetum along with eucalyptus, thlaspi and bupleurum. Alternative flowers perfect for this time of year include ammi, Helleborus, forsythia, Lily of the Valley, narcissus, forget me not, peonies, hyacinth and muscari.” – Cheryl from Cheryls Flowers.

“Spring is a fantastic opportunity to introduce some colour to your wedding, and after the cold winter months, the new season’s flowers don’t disappoint, from big and blousy peony-style double tulips in oranges, yellows and pinks, to striking branches of pastel pink blossom there’s something to suit all styles and themes. And if that wasn’t enough, many spring blooms such as stunning double narcissi, hyacinths and lilac are all highly perfumed and will fill your day with the most heavenly scent.” – Zoë from Zoë Bidwell Bespoke Flowers.

“Most wedding florists will book up between a year and 18 months before the wedding, especially on peak summer dates. Remember that every florist is different and their personalities and styles are shown through their work, so do some research and have a look through their portfolios, recommendations and past work before booking.” –

“You may have a few flowers you’d like to include, but it’s important to keep an open mind, your florist has a wealth of knowledge on what’s seasonally available, and they will make suggestions you may not have come across before that will bring your whole look together. It’s important to remember that seasonal flowers tend to be more reasonably priced and better quality, ask your florist to create and design something for you. That’s what we’re here for!” – Wendy from Blush & Bloom Florals.

“This bouquet was a loose style with a selection of roses (white avalanche, peach Juliet and Miss Piggy), lisianthus, alchemilla mollis and eucalyptus. Alternative seasonal flowers could include: dahlias, antirrhinum, lysimachia, hydrangeas, nerine, phlox, delphinium and gomphrena.”  – Cheryl from Cheryls Flowers. www.bespokeeventflowers.co.uk

“For autumn weddings, there’s so much choice, including deep reds, burnt oranges and yellows, but if that’s a little too much colour for you, a floral theme combining seed heads, dried wheat and pampas with blooms in shades of caramel, rich chocolate browns and vanilla creams can be a stylish and subtler alternative but still full of autumnal flavour.” – Zoë from Zoë Bidwell Bespoke Flowers.

SUMMER LOVING

My wife-to-be and I are having a summer wedding and would love to incorporate the season into our cake. Do you have any ideas?

The best thing about summer is the flavours; ripe berries and sharp citrus flavours are perfect for reflecting bright and warm summer sunshine. I encourage you to go large on the fruit flavours available this time of year. Whether they are baked into the cake, a filling or decoration – nothing says summer better.

Your cake maker should be able to use fresh fruits in their sponges or freeze-dried fruit, sharp curds and fruit purees to really give that fresh summer punch. In our opinion, the inside of a cake says as much as the outside.

JUST THE TWO OF US

Lots of photographers offer an engagement shoot, but we’re camera shy and don’t know if it’s for us. What are the benefits?

Being camera shy is one of the best reasons for booking an engagement shoot. The last thing you want to happen is to be awkward in front of the camera on your wedding day. Engagement shoots are your opportunity to really get to know your photographer and to get accustomed to how they work.

An engagement shoot can take you through poses that may be used for your wedding photography, and just as importantly identify things that you wouldn’t want. For example, your version of ‘sweet and romantic’, may be another couples ‘yuk and cheesy’.

Some people may prefer a completely candid approach to their wedding photography, so an engagement shoot is a chance to have a relaxed time with your photographer, capturing the love and fun between you while taking part in an activity that you love. Creating candid moments during your engagement shoot makes it 100 per cent easier to do on your wedding day.

Choose a location for your engagement shoot that has meaning to you such as a favourite walk or where you first met, that way you’ll be more relaxed and get the best out of your time with your photographer. You can’t get things wrong on an engagement shoot, it’s a time to get rid of your camera shyness and get that all important confidence in your wedding photographer. Let them know what you want from your wedding images and listen to their suggestions. Together you’ll come up with the best way to create your perfect wedding photographs.

A SPECIAL TOUCH

How can a celebrant help us make our ceremony extra special?

Your wedding day is an important day for you both; the ceremony is the main event and a celebrant will help create a fantastic, one-of-a-kind opening that will set the tone and atmosphere for the celebrations that follow.

Your celebrant will put you first. You will be the only couple that they look after that day and give their whole focus to. You are investing in them to create a seamless ceremony around you and your love story. It will be a very personalised ceremony that will bring you and your guests together, which you’ll all remember with great love and affection.

Your celebrant should be someone you can trust. You’ll be booking a supplier with a high degree of skill and professionalism, who can engage your guests and lead from the front.

Your celebrant will spend time with you beforehand to make sure they understand what you’d love to see in your wedding ceremony. On the day you’ll know them well and you’ll trust them to deliver so that you have a ceremony which encapsulates everything that’s important to you both.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

I’m nervous about my first bridal appointment. What can I expect, and what should I take with me?

First off, it is completely normal to be nervous. It’s such a huge thing for a bride to find her dress, but your nerves should be mixed with excitement too!

I make it my priority to chat with my brides about their wedding, to try and alleviate some of those nerves and get a feel of what style they might like. Most brides come in with no idea of what they like, and that is absolutely fine! Your stylist is with you, part of your bride tribe now, and they will use their judgement and experience to help guide you through dresses until you find the one

There are only two things that are essential to take with you for your bridal appointment. Firstly, whoever you need to be there to help you say yes to the dress. If you want your nan’s approval, make sure she’s there! Whoever it is, ensure you bring them along on the day. Secondly, keep an open mind – your stylist knows what they’re doing!

If you wanted, there are some items which you might like to bring, but they’re not that important at this point:

•Shoes similar to those that you’d like to wear on the day.

•Any jewellery or accessories that you know you’ll be wearing with your dress.

•Nude underwear, especially if you’re thinking of a fitted dress.

•A hair clip is usually handy to pop your hair up and out the way whilst you’re trying on lots of dresses.

Remember to just enjoy the experience, regardless of whether you find the dress or not. Ensure you take something away from every single appointment, whether that’s a particular shape or colour or neckline that you like. Then you begin to narrow your search down to find the one

CHOICES, CHOICES

We’ve narrowed down our venue choices but can’t seem to make up our minds. What questions should we ask to help us decide?

A lot of people will give recommendations, which are helpful, but keep in your mind what you both want. Visit your narrowed-down venues multiple times. Every time you visit, you will notice more about the space. Are there enough plug sockets where you want them? You don’t want to be tripping over extension leads just so you can have the photo booth you’ve been dreaming of.

Set a budget. It isn’t always easy, but you will be able to find a beautiful venue that fits in with how much you want to spend.

Location. Do you have many friends and family coming from a distance? Is on-site or nearby accommodation important? Are the travel connections reasonable?

Confirm the decorating and supplier options for the venue. Some have a list of recommended suppliers they allow on-site, which may not include the one you have your eye on. It may also not have the space for the four-piece band you have in mind, or their music cut-off time may be earlier than you had hoped.

How much involvement do you hope to have in the setting up? Would you prefer to be the one to put the favours on each place setting for the wedding breakfast or would you like to minimise the stress with a wedding planner to do this for you? This may not be an option with barn-style

PICTURE PERFECT

Can you offer us some advice on how to look natural in front of the camera?

There are several ways a couple can ease their camera shyness and anxiety, some are for the couple to do and others for the photographer. Most wedding photographers would call themselves ‘documentary’, which basically means you shouldn’t really notice them – it’s their job to fade into the background and capture the events as they unfold but using their experience and skill to get great photos rather than just snapshots. They’ll use different lenses and cameras and so on, none of which you need to worry about and probably will never even notice. Just enjoy the day and allow the photographer to do their job. For myself, I like to intrude on the day slightly and many other photographers will too. We’ll simply find a few perfect places for photos of you as a couple, somewhere with a light and colourful background, where the light will make you look a million dollars. We’ll just ask you to stand or sit and maybe say: ‘have a chat and catch up on the day’. We’ll then wait for a moment where you’re gazing into each other’s eyes and without you realising we’ll take a photo. These photos are often used as the centre-fold for the wedding album later. Do note though that some photographers make a big deal of the couple photos and will want to spend a long time with you both on multiple occasions, for many couples this is perfect, but if you’re camera shy or anxious, then it may be best not to select this type of photographer, so choose ‘documentary’ or ‘reportage’ instead.

venues, whereas typically with hotel weddings, an in-house wedding planner can reduce the workload and assist with the planning process, as well as the hands-on aspects of the day.

After a long winter, a group of talented suppliers wanted to welcome the emergence of summer with a fresh, bright and clean aesthetic that radiates positivity

Jo Pyman from One Curious Dream wanted to create a beautifully clean, crisp aesthetic that welcomed spring with open arms. “White, light and airy, the orangery at Baddow Park House provided the perfect setting to showcase some beautiful floristry from Fiori & Co paired with stunning

tableware and furniture from The Banqueting Hire Service,” adds Jo. “With draped linens, plenty of candles and metallic hints in the cutlery and glassware, the aim was to keep the feeling fluid and contemporary whilst creating a setting that couples could take inspiration from.”

OPEN AIR ‘I dos’

We discuss how to plan an outdoor wedding with help from East Anglia’s local professionals

Love for the great outdoors is blooming. After being shut up indoors during the pandemic, there’s a growing appreciation of open spaces, fresh air and all that nature has to offer. Demand for chilled al fresco weddings continues to rise and shows no sign of stopping any time soon. Luckily, we’re blessed in East Anglia with everything from beautiful coast and countryside, to magical woods, forests and more, so the world’s your oyster. Read on for top tips on how to pull off a dream outdoor wedding in style…

TENTS AND TIPIS

Events Under Canvas (www.eventsundercanvas.co.uk) was launched in September 2013 with a mission to create magnificent outdoor events under beautiful giant tipis, with impeccable service and attention to detail. The company caters for events of all sizes from small garden parties to festival spaces, corporate events and grand weddings. MD Jenna Ackerley says: “First things first, picture your dream day. Think about the vibe you’re going for, are you after a boho-chic festival feel or more of a rustic or romantic affair? Once you’ve got a vision in mind, it’ll make all the decision-making a piece of cake.”

Jenna’s top tips

Location is everything. You want a spot that has enough room for your guests, tents and a backdrop that’ll make your Instagram followers drool. Make sure it’s easy to get to, and if you need any permits, get them sorted pronto. You’ll also need to consider parking, accommodation and transport too.

To make your celebration pop, get some experienced suppliers on board. You want people who know their way around outdoor weddings and can deliver top-notch service and products. Remember, you’re outdoors, so why not embrace nature? Add flowers, foliage, and wooden accents to your décor. And to really get your guests into the spirit, why not throw in some lawn games or a good old-fashioned bonfire? Glamping as guest accommodation is brilliant too. Finally, don’t forget to have a plan B in case Mother Nature decides to play havoc. Rain happens, so be prepared and have a contingency plan in place.

Now, the tents themselves are the pièce de résistance. Think about how many guests you’re inviting and what kind of set up will work best for you. Do you need lighting, furniture, firepits, heating, toilets and generators? The possibilities are endless, so let your imagination run wild. Your tent company should support you through all this.

In a nutshell, planning and organising an outdoor celebration in a tipi or tent takes some thought and effort, but it’s worth it to create a day you’ll always remember.

MARQUEE MAGIC

Morton’s Event Hire Ltd (www.mortonevents.co.uk) provides luxury marquees for all occasions. Offering sailcloth tents, traditional marquees, and unique hexagonal modular pods, the company create personalised events for couples from the ground up. Rob Morton, tells us: “When planning an outdoor wedding with a site in mind, just think about the logistics of getting everything in place, you may have large vehicles that need to get on site for the marquee build, caterering vans, fridge trailers, luxury toilet trailers and generators. It's also preferential to have these all tucked away out of site. Discuss with your caterers, bar company, DJ and band what their power requirements are, as often only a generator is needed to power the whole wedding.”

AL FRESCO VOWS

Oaktree Ceremonies (www.oaktreeceremonies.co.uk) are a global celebrant service provider creating beautiful alternatives to traditional nuptials. Whether you’re planning a wedding in the UK, renewing vows, celebrating the arrival of a new family member or saying goodbye to a loved one, Oaktree Ceremonies will deliver a personal and special occasion for you with their team of independent celebrants. Celebrant Rob Head explains: “Outdoor weddings are a wonderful option for natureloving couples wanting to hold their wedding celebrations in the great outdoors. Getting married outside is a growing trend, which we believe will be even more popular in the future.”

DELECTABLE DELIGHTS

First opening its doors in 2010, Buns of Fun (www.bunsoffun.co.uk) is owned by self-taught Emma, who works from her garage conversion kitchen. She prepares every cake from scratch using the best ingredients, mostly with a Norfolk provenance. Emma tells us: “If you’re having a wedding cake in a marquee, place it in front of a blank background, situated near a source of natural light so that it photographs well. If you’re in a barn or other covered gathering space, pay attention to the wall or area behind the cake. Your cake maker will have spent hours making your delights, and you want it to look in peak condition when you get your photographs back.”

Rob’s top tips

www.eloiseandmitch.com

Most couples would choose a spring or summer wedding, when the weather is warmer. Spring brings blooming gardens and summer has fantastic blue skies – both of which create a beautiful backdrop for exchanging your vows. But that doesn’t mean we should dismiss a late autumn or winter wedding. Although you’re gambling with the elements a little more, autumn weddings offer earthy colours and winter weddings have a magical air to them, and you might even get a dusting of snow!

There are a huge number of benefits to hosting an outdoor wedding, such as more space. Your guests will have the option to mix and mingle without being confined in one room. And you won’t have to worry about narrowing your guest list down or as many decorations. Choose a location that gives you a backdrop that matches your ideal themed wedding. Natural lighting will flow throughout the day, creating a wide range of options for your photos. Take advantage of the warm colours from the sun during the day and find the right photographer for amazing night shots.

STYLED TO PERFECTION

When it comes to decorating your wedding venue, the options are endless. Whether you want to incorporate your favourite colour, a particular theme or showcase your personality, there’s a lot you need to take into consideration. To help, the team here at Your East Anglian Wedding have put together some ideas to help you style your al fresco nuptials.

Getty Images

Colourful archways will help create a focal point for your ceremony or reception. These look stunning in photographs and can be a fun way of incorporating your theme.

Getty Images

If you want to be eco-conscious, do your research. Plan a vegetarian or vegan menu, purchase bio-degradable confetti, use public transport where possible and consider sustainable favours. It’s also worth asking your venue what their green policy is and finding out if they recycle or grow their own produce.

Getty Images

Al fresco weddings lend themselves beautifully to neutral flowers. Everyone is loving pampas at the moment, and the tones and textures will add depth to any design.

Getty Images

Add a touch of gold to your tables, flowers and stationery to create a luxurious look. It’s also worth using lots of different flowers in your centrepieces and bouquet but in the same colours. Mixing lower-cost options with more expensive versions like orchids can help reduce the overall price.

Getty Images

Wooden palettes and signs are perfect for directing your guests. They also look great as table plans or order-of-the-days.

Getty Images

Outdoor props such as sofas, benches and carpets can be rented to add an outside feel to your venue. Barrels will also fit beautifully with the al fresco theme and provide a place to pop your drink down.

Help the bees by giving your guests packets of seeds as wedding favours or a plant to take home to add to their garden.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

SKIN DEEP

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great

The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.

possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.

Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.

What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?

This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.

I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.

People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?

I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.

We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where

What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.

Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or

“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.

A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.

Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.

What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?

I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.

The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.

It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right

ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.

When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?

It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.

What products couldn’t you live without?

I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

SOME MUCH NEEDED TLC

Why do we need to change our skincare routine in the summer?

As we transition into the warmer seasons, it’s a good idea to focus on rejuvenating and refreshing your skin after months of harsh cold weather and central heating. Look out for the following ingredients in your skincare – they may already be in your bathroom cabinet waiting to be used.

Hyaluronic acid – this amazing ingredient binds to water and helps to hydrate the skin; it’s perfect for when the air is not as dry as it is during winter.

Vitamin C – This works as an antioxidant and helps to brighten skin and protect it from damaging UV rays, making it ideal for when the sun finally comes out again.

Niacinamide – This is quite a trendy skincare ingredient at the moment, it can work wonders reducing inflammation and soothing the skin. Ideal if you suffer from allergies and skin sensitivity.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) – This might sound scary because of the ‘acid’ part of the name, but both glycolic acid and lactic acid (types of AHA) are gentle enough to use on the skin for exfoliation and removing dead skin cells. They help to reveal smoother and brighter skin.

Lightweight moisturisers – You may have enjoyed using a heavier moisturiser in the depths of winter, but as the weather gets warmer you can switch to something lighter. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile and cucumber to soothe and hydrate your skin.

Q&A Fashion and Beauty

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

HERE COME THE BOYS

My hubby-to-be is having six groomsmen, and we’d like them to wear something suitable for our summer wedding. What colours and styles should we look for?

Your groomsmen’s outfits should follow a similar theme to the groom and best man. Firstly, decide how the groom will be styled and this will narrow the choices for your groomsmen. In terms of timescale, we suggest you come for fittings four months before the big day.

There are so many options available, but a traditional morning suit is still very popular. A classic lounge suit is on-trend and offers a slightly less formal option. Evening suits are also growing in popularity for wedding parties. Styles include satin lapels, coloured velvets and paisley prints. Tweed is the latest trend for weddings. Here at Golding of Newmarket, we offer a mix-and-match tweed in blue and brown that can be adapted to suit the style of the wedding.

Our popular ranges include Cheltenham with black tails and stripe trousers, the Newmarket range in navy blue and Blenheima, which is ideal for a summer wedding. If your party contains children, they can be fitted within the ranges too.

Watch this space

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.

There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving.

I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
92

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 95

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.
