Say he o to 2023!
Hello lovely readers and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding
This year we’re already seeing showstopping nuptials around the counties with stunning touches and heartwarming moments.
As we look to the year ahead, I can’t wait to see weddings feature Pantone’s colour of the year –viva magenta. The shade will undoubtedly impact the industry thanks to its bold and empowering hue.
Congratulations if you’ve just got engaged over the festive period! If I could share one piece of advice for wedding planning, it would be to ensure the day reflects you both – don’t get sidetracked trying to please others.
Planning your big day should be a fun experience where you find a theme you both love, a colour scheme to complement your day, a showstopping venue and talented companies who can bring your vision to life.
There’s a reason traditional weddings have been popular for decades. The classic styling, grand settings and formal attire will always create elegant nuptials year-round. But expect to see more couples breaking away from tradition in 2023.
If you don’t know where to start with the planning process, you’re in luck as we’ve been busy sourcing the very best local suppliers to provide top inspiration. Expect to see talented florists, photographers, bakers, videographers, venue stylists and more.
That’s all from me! I hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as I‘ve loved putting it together.
Here’s to another year of fabulous weddings!
This local shoot at Harlaxton Manor is bursting full of inspiration from elegant styling, timeless attire and showstopping touches.
Check out this stunning bake from Red Robin Cakery.

Zoe has been creating wedding cakes for more than four years but has been baking cakes for 10 years in total. She says, “I’ve always loved weddings since I was little! I get to share the build-up excitement as I work with lovebirds to create their dream design while ensuring each bake truly fits their theme.”

Nikki and John had a stunning outdoor wedding with rustic touches

Nikki was looking for cat food in Sainsbury’s when she first noticed John. “I was concentrating on what to buy when I realised someone was walking behind me. When I turned around, this gorgeous man was turning to look at me – the moment took my breath away.” At the checkout, they had that awkward ‘do you come here often’ type of chat before going their separate ways. Over the next few weeks, the pair kept bumping into each other at various supermarkets and along country lanes when Nikki was out riding her horse. After chatting more, the pair decided to date and the rest is history!
The couple was relaxing one Sunday afternoon when they heard the village church bells ring, which started a conversation about marriage. They both decided they wanted to tie the knot and started planning their perfect day!
SETTING THE SCENE
From the beginning of the planning journey, the couple knew they wanted an outdoor wedding as they’re very outdoorsy people who love nature – it’s where they feel most at home. The day needed to be personal to them both as well as memorable to guests.
After trying to find a venue that matched their vision, the couple turned to the team at Brook Meadow where John works –they were delighted to host their wedding!
The lovebirds found an overgrown woodland clearing tucked away from the main farmyard and campsite, which they knew would be perfect for their day. They started clearing bits of old machinery, metal spikes on the trees and overgrown plants to create the perfect setting. The next step was to roll the ground flat before sowing grass and wildflowers. Together they built a rustic structure decorated with simple voile drapes, a simple chandelier and candles to create a romantic atmosphere.
As there was no power and the pair didn’t want the drone of generators to spoil the ambience, they used lots of solar lights. They also cleared another clearing for the bathroom area with a dressing table, a large mirror, a hand wash station, some toiletries and portaloos.
The couple decided to have a celebrant-led ceremony and incorporated the traditional practice of handfasting, where they asked family members to come up and place ribbons around their wrists. It’s the perfect way for loved ones to give their blessings and symbolises the binding of the pair’s love.
What better way to surprise guests and add the wow factor than having an owl ring bearer? A beautiful barn owl called Ophelia didn’t disappoint! Guests were able to hold and have photos taken with the owl as well as a selection of birds of prey during the reception.
The reception took place between two wooded areas with straw bales arranged in sociable scallop shapes along the edges. Here guests enjoyed the free bar with barrels of local beer, wine, prosecco, water, soft drinks and a kettle for hot drinks. Everyone brought a picnic to enjoy and spent the afternoon socialising with loved ones.
The pair had layers of British cheese from a local delicatessen instead of a traditional wedding cake. The cheese was decorated with fresh grapes, figs, nuts and a traditional corn dolly mouse climbing up the side. It was served later in the day with biscuits, olives and dates. The pair also provided locally pulled pork burgers with Asian slaw from the local farm shop.
A surprise for the guests was the John Deere tractor and trailer that transported them to and from the wedding areas, which the pair decorated with swags of voile, bunting and roses.
25 REAL WEDDINGS
LOOKING THE PART
Nikki looked online for inspiration before finding her perfect gown – she knew the shape and style would be perfect! With help from a fabulous local seamstress who worked magic on all the delicate appliqué flowers, the gown fitted like a dream. The bride found some gorgeous fabric embroidered with wildflowers for her veil.
The bouquet and headdress were handmade by the bride’s friend from a local flower club. She got Nikki’s vision spot on and even grew some flowers to incorporate. The bride says, “I wanted the pieces to have woodland foliage with touches of white and shaped in a similar way to my great aunt’s bouquet.”
The bride had a fabulous hair and make-up artist who created a natural look, which left Nikki feeling amazing. To finish off her look, she wore white lace ankle boots with blue soles and white stars from Joe Browns.
The groom wore a mismatched tweed suit, boots, socks with tractors on, a floral shirt, a bow tie and a buttonhole made from feathers. Nikki’s nephew was the couple’s only page boy, who wore a tweed waistcoat and trousers, a flat cap, a white shirt and red baseball boots.
TIME TO CELEBRATE
The couple provided equipment and invited guests to make their flower crowns by foraging for flowers and adding them to a wire frame. They also made a traditional horseshoe toss game and coordinated a wellie-wanging competition, providing excellent photographic opportunities. They even made a tree swing big enough for two people for an extra special touch that was a massive hit with guests.
The pair had acoustic bands perform for guests, including a village folk band that played throughout the ceremony and a duo that performed during the picnic. The couple also had a local brass/New Orleans jazz band in the evening. They mingled with loved ones and got everyone involved with a sing-along. After a full day of celebrations, the night ended with fireworks and a tractor ride.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
The couple felt slightly stressed in the morning as they didn’t have time to set everything up as planned. However, it didn’t matter once they were dressed and everything got underway.
Nikki and John loved every moment of the day; they were pleased to see their nearest and dearest having fun. The bride says, “We felt like little puppy dogs scamping from one person to the next, trying to speak to everyone – it was an absolute whirlwind!” She adds, “Every hour of hard work had paid off, as many of our guests said it was the best wedding they’d ever been to. The list of memorable moments goes on, but making our promises to each other during the ceremony was a real highlight!”

Jade and Tim’s festival-style wedding was full of fun elements and pops of colour
Images courtesy of The Crowthers Photo & Film
Tim was playing at a festival in Nottingham when he first met Jade, who went to support her friend Leah’s fiancé Sam. The nearlyweds got to work on the clever seating arrangements for their wedding in July 2019 after Tim mentioned he liked Jade and they sat the pair together. The couple completely hit it off and decided to go on a few dates – the rest is history!
Tim proposed on the beach at sunset in Cornwall in September 2020. Jade says, “We had spoken about our future together, so I knew a proposal was coming! We were having a lovely day when Tim suggested we go for a barbecue on the beach and a swim in the sea. We got in the car to go to our campsite to get our stuff, but there was a car fire blocking our only way home and we didn’t have enough time to eat. Tim was adamant we at least have a mojito on the beach, which is where he popped the question!”
Here Jade shares details about their special day…
29 REAL WEDDINGS
We wanted a fun day with all our friends and family without anything being too formal. When I stumbled across Warren Farmhouse, I knew it would be the perfect venue for our relaxed day!
Our aim for the day was to create as little waste as possible, so we did some DIY bits and used pallets for the signage.
We
We had a nine-tiered cheese tower instead of a traditional cake, which went down a treat!
We had a laid-back barbecue during the day, pizza in the evening and an ice cream van in the afternoon!
had paper lanterns throughout the marquee and dream catchers in the trees.

Frond & Bloom created the bridal party’s flowers, which featured pink and orange dahlias.
For our favours, we donated to the Alzheimer’s Society and gave everyone a pin badge in memory of my grandma, who passed away in February 2021 with vascular dementia.
I wore a dress called Nyika by Charlie Brear as I didn’t want a typically structured dress. I accessorised with a belt, blue heels, pearl accessories and a flower crown – I felt amazing!
Tim wore light-coloured trousers and a blue suit jacket from Hugo Boss. To complete the look, he rocked a floral tie and braces as well as a bright belt.
We asked the groomsmen to wear what they felt comfortable in. They all wore different suits, which worked really well!
I wanted my bridesmaids to feel comfortable and asked them to pick any dress in sage green.
We had an open mic session at the wedding as we had many talented guests. Lots of singing and dancing got the party started!
31 REAL WEDDINGS
We both felt nervous but excited on the day – it was much more emotional than expected!
A few moments that stood out were walking down the aisle, going for a stroll after the ceremony and seeing all our guests relaxing.
My friend Lisa bought a fancy dress frog head with her, which featured heavily on the dancefloor!
Rebecca at Warren Farmhouse truly made our day, as nothing was too much trouble! Many of our guests commented on the amazing team.

LOVIN’
Charlotte and Lewis had a rustic-style wedding at Norton Fields Images courtesy of Tom Beynon Photography
REAL WEDDINGS 35
Charlotte
and Lewis first met through mutual friends in year 10 as their friendship groups overlapped. It wasn’t until year 13 that the pair became closer and started messaging via Snapchat. She continues, “We spoke every night after school for a couple of weeks and realised we were both going out into town on a May bank holiday. We both remember being nervous before going out, but that faded away once we saw each other and were inseparable all night.”
Lewis proposed on January 1st 2019, during a trip to Innsbruck in Austria with Charlotte’s family. They headed up the mountains one day, and Lewis took Charlotte to a private area to take selfies. That’s when Lewis got down on one knee and popped the question in the most beautiful setting. To top it all off, Charlotte’s family watched everything from afar!
SETTING THE SCENE
When searching for the perfect setting for their wedding, the couple fell in love with Norton Fields in Leicestershire. The bride says, “Located in the countryside, the working farm has an old cow barn surrounded by plenty of land – it felt like we were in our own little world! The on-site cottage accommodation was beautiful, and the whole venue had such a relaxed atmosphere.”
The couple got creative and transformed the blank canvas spaces to match their theme and colour scheme. The decoration was a massive part of the planning process, and the pair went for a rustic theme to match the venue’s exposed bricks and wooden flooring. They opted for a navy blue and sage green colour scheme to complement the day and match the bright flowers. The florist incorporated pink carnations with pops of yellows, purples, blues and oranges with lots of foliage to create a cottage garden feel. The boutiques and arrangements were a showstopping! The florist also made flower hoops hung above the guests during the ceremony and wedding breakfast.
The couple sat on a big rectangular table down the middle of the venue with their nearest and dearests for the reception, while other guests sat on round tables. This added a relaxed feel to the day and meant the couple could chat more easily with loved ones. Each round table had flowers in three small vases, gold candlesticks, sage green table runners and gold charger plates to add a touch of colour and luxury.
The couple were fortunate to get the opportunity to travel around Southeast Asia, so many of the tables were named after their favourite places. They also had Innsbruck, Austria as the top table name!
Lewis’s mum is an amazing baker and created the biscuit favours with green icing that matched the table runners perfectly! Another sweet treat was the incredible naked-style cake that was a true masterpiece and tasted just as good as it looked. Cakes by Mad Cake Maker created a vegan top tier so the bride could also enjoy some cake. The baker made cats out of icing and placed them at the bottom of the bake for the couple to keep forever.
Light letters on the dancefloor spelling the word love looked great in the photos – as did the fairylights on the back wall.
The couple hired a fantastic catering team who created a bespoke menu with some of the pair’s favourite meals. They had cauliflower fritters to start, mushroom ravioli in a creamy sauce for mains and lemon curd cheesecake for dessert – all vegan dishes. They did have a chicken supreme main option for meat eaters too! The lovebirds had hot dogs for evening food, with vegan options available.
LOOKING THE PART
The bride wore an ivory dress called Pearl by Essense of Australia from Dress Me Pretty Bridal Room in Hinckley. The A-Line style looked stunning with spaghetti straps, a fitted waist, a flowy skirt, floral lace and sequins that added some sparkle. The bride says, “I wanted to feel sexy on the day, so the low cut neckline, sheer panels and split in the skirt lining was perfect!” To finish her look, Charlotte wore a artificial flower crown that her Mum wore on her wedding day, but with the addition of some yellow
36
flowers to match the colour scheme.
The bride’s hairstylist was terrific and stayed until the last minute to ensure that Charlotte looked perfect before walking down the aisle!
Lewis wore the same suit as the groomsmen, the pair’s dads and his stepdad from Smart Grooms in Leicester. He went for navy tweed suits, which matched their colour theme and relaxed style. The groomsmen wore sage green ties and pocket squares to match the bridesmaids, while the groom wore a bespoke tie and pocket square made by Florence and She based in Coalville.
TIME TO CELEBRATE
The couple hired a Synergy Live Band to keep guests entertained, and they performed all day from when the guests arrived until the last dance – they were a massive hit with loved ones! The band are just fantastic singers and entertainers; they knew the right songs to get people up dancing and even sang in Spanish, which added a summery vibe to the day. They also let guests do a bit of karaoke at the end of the night; Lewis and his mum sang Bohemian Rhapsody with guests on the dancefloor like their fans! It was such a funny but special moment that they’ll always treasure.
The couple also had a photo booth with props, which was especially great for entertaining the children! The captured images were placed into a book, and guests could write messages for the lovebirds alongside. The bride says, “I find that at weddings I’ve been to before, it can be easy to forget to write in the guest book. But when it’s in the form of a photo booth, everyone is happy to spend time on it!
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
Charlotte woke up a lot earlier than her alarm on the big day as she tossed and turned all night, hoping everything would go perfectly on the day. She says, “I made a cup of tea and had some croissants for breakfast – it was so nice to have some time to myself.” She adds, “It’s such a strange feeling just before you walk down the aisle because you’re so excited to be married to your soulmate, but the nerves of walking down the aisle in front of everyone and the realisation of how big this moment is just hits you!”
Lewis was a bag of nerves all morning and went into panic mode as he just wanted everything to go right. The bride says, “When we saw each other for the first time, you can quite literally see the relieved, excited and happy looks on our faces in the photos! We both relaxed so much after the ceremony!”
A moment that stood out to Charlotte was the first look with her dad, which was unforgettable and emotional. It was even more special when they walked down the aisle to one of the pair’s favourite songs, which Charlotte also sang to her dad growing up. Her dad made their day extra special as he spent hours outside in his shed, no matter the weather, making props for the day. Charlotte says, “Anything we wanted, he made! Honestly, our wedding wouldn’t have been the same as he made it possible for us to create our dream wedding!”
The couple added some special touches to symbolise loved ones that are no longer with them. The bride had a bouquet charm on her flowers, which included pictures of her grandparents. They picked pink carnations for the flowers and buttonholes as this was her grandmother’s and Lewis’s grandfather’s favourite flower.
Mambo Bars were great and let the couple include a Singapore Sling to the cocktail menu in memory of the bride’s grandmother who went to Singapore and had the drink at the famous Raffles Hotel. The company let the pair name the drink after her, so they picked The Kathycabana as her name was Kathy and she loved Barry Manilow! There was also an area with photos of other loved ones so they could be there in spirit.
REAL WEDDINGS 37
HONEYMOON
After the wedding, Charlotte and Lewis travelled to Mauritius for their honeymoon – somewhere they’d always wanted to go. The couple planned the honeymoon together and had the most fantastic time! They’d always dreamt of going somewhere sunny by the beach with lots of cocktails and great food. The Sunrise Attitude Hotel was the perfect fit as it isn’t just a luxurious resort but is vegan-friendly too.

TIERS OF JOY
Local bakers from around the East Midlands share 2023 cake trends
Finding the perfect cake for your wedding day is a fun experience where you can think outside the box to create your dream bake – there are no rules! By incorporating your colour scheme and theme to tie the whole day together, you can make the perfect addition to your day that will get guests talking for years to come. To help inspire, we’ve selected some of the top bakers to share upcoming trends.
SOPHIE POOLE AT RED ROBIN CAKERY
The year 2023 is an exciting time for wedding cake trends. So many of last year’s bakes were designed pre-pandemic, but we’re now seeing lots of new inspiration – I’m super excited to get stuck in.
One of the cake trends I’m looking forward to most is the use of more natural decorations in the form of pressed edible flowers, herbs and fresh berries. These look amazing, and you won’t have to worry about what you can and can’t use in the form of fresh flowers. Berries also entice your guests to the cake, and the herbs smell amazing.
We’re expecting separated or clear tiers to be on the menu a little more this year. Whether that’s clear acrylic plates between tiers or acrylic dummy tiers filled with fresh flowers or an ornament – both are fantastic ways to add the wow factor.
I can’t wait to start Lambeth cakes this year, which are ornately and elaborately piped cakes often in different shapes like a heart. The bakes can fit perfectly into your wedding theme, from pastel colours to bright and vibrant shades. Usually finished off with some perfect cherries for the vintage feel, your guests will love to get a slice!

REBECCA SHEARD AT BAKEZILLA’S BESPOKE CAKES
In 2023, we’ve seen the return of big wedding cakes! During the past few years of covid postponements, most cakes were either cancelled and not rescheduled or cut down in size due to limited numbers.
Some couples are not holding back and are opting for dessert and grazing-style tables, which include lots of smaller items such as brownie and blondie bites, cookies and other bakes. It’s perfect for when you need a hit of sugar, which we all need on a long day of celebrating.
Buttercream and ganache-covered cakes are still extremely popular, with sugar-paste cakes still far and few between. Buttercream bakes, including semi-naked cakes, aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Another trend I’ve seen creeping in is the addition of edible flowers –these can be pricey but are so worth it!
Gold leaf, neutral colours and foliage are proving popular additions to the requests I’ve been receiving for 2023. Popular flavours are safer options such as vanilla, chocolate, lemon, toffee and red velvet.

LEE-ANNE NEWTON AT DELICIOUSLY DIVINE CAKE DESIGN
Ideas and options for weddings can be overwhelming. So, with our sights on the year ahead, let’s help you understand your options as we look at wedding cake trends and what couples are booking in 2023.
Semi-naked cakes are my most ordered style. The design has a thin scraping of buttercream and is like the ‘little black dress’ of cakes. You can dress it up or down with flowers or fruit to suit any season or colour theme. For those that like these cakes but want more buttercream, a full coating with rustic stripes added using a pallet knife is perfect and works great with minimal decoration.
Alternatively, spatula-painted cakes feature buttercream petals; depending on the style you’re after, these can be busy and opulent or simple and rustic. The designs suit any venue, and you can adapt the cake to fit any colour scheme. As a newer trend, you could be one of the first to have the design.
Another trend is the boho chic theme, where natural elements meet elegance with dried grasses and foliage combined with earthy peach/pink tones. Throw in some rustic gold for that vintage and boho feel. The added elements make these cakes work with any simple cake base, specially textured buttercream. Gold leaf remains popular even as trends change, as it adds a touch of luxury to any design and takes it up a level or two. The simple addition can take a cake from good to great and works with almost all designs. Check out: www.deliciouslydivine.co.uk
VARSHA KORCZYNSKI AT MESMERISING ICING
Couples are becoming more adventurous with their cake design and want to incorporate details that invoke precious memories and represent their love. While smooth-tiered cakes are still an option, there’s a gravitation towards textured cakes with lovebirds opting for bakes with deckled edging, rustic ridges, pallet knife flowers, piping, stencils, edible lace and more. Dressing a cake with natural blooms or sugar florals is still in vogue. We’re seeing a sway towards small bunches of flowers, including one large accent floral or a waterfall cascade of blooms – foliage is also proving popular.
Saturated pink combined with a red hue creates a stunning shade known as Viva Magenta, which is a colour that represents love and harmony. You can incorporate the shade into your cake’s decoration. Another interesting choice is the highlights of metallic bronze.
Flavour fusions are on trends, with rose and cardamom, passionfruit and pineapple or chocolate with peanut butter and caramel proving popular. Couples are becoming more environmentally conscious, wanting their cake to be eco-friendly without compromising taste, appearance or consistency. Many are selecting vegan options for all to enjoy.

Sustainable STYLES
These designers offer something green as they promote their latest collections created using eco-friendly fabrics
SANYUKTA SHRESTHA
Sanyukta (seen here on the red carpet with her daughter, Ameya at the recent world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio) is one of the UK’s leading sustainable wedding dress designers with a conscience being among the first to introduce sustainability to the bridal industry with the launch of her bridal collection in 2011. In 2022 came her Ready to Wed 2022 collection of ethical, vegan wedding dresses. Each one was handmade by highly skilled artisans in Nepal from hand-spun and hand-loomed 100% Fairtrade bamboo; 100% organic cotton; TENCEL (which is a luxe floaty vegan eco-fibre made from the cellulose of wood pulp which is 100% biodegradable and compostable) and also recycled fibres. Her Iconic Bridal collection (pictured) which captures the mood of the 1930s is also made from these organic materials, and her Zero Waste philosophy strongly influenced it.
One of the Nepalese-born designer’s bridal creations is preserved in the Fashion Museum, Bath. A London College of Fashion graduate, Sanyukta’s evening wear has been worn by celebrities including Victoria’s Secret supermodel Candice Swanepoel; classically trained soprano Natalie Coyle and English actress and singer Amy Nuttall to name a few. www.sanyuktashrestha.com
GRACE LOVES LACE
Grace Loves Lace has launched its Memoirs Of Her collection for 2023 of eight stunning made-to-order and ready-to-wear gowns priced between £1,200 and £2,500 plus two intricately embroidered veils. It features silhouettes made with a new 100% recycled eco lace, exclusive to the Australian based-brand which is committed to ethical and sustainable manufacturing with all gowns made in Australia. Founder and creative director Megan Ziems tells us, “There’s plenty of skill that goes into making a dress look effortless, each gown in this collection is an ode to craft and creativity - we have challenged ourselves and our in-house artisans to create pieces that will move you. This level of detail, softened by flowing fabrics, texture and effortless silhouettes strikes a unique balance. These gowns are true works of art.”
Always pushing boundaries, the brand has launched the first-ever wedding dress using lycra swimsuit material to hug and shape the body. Megan adds, “We wanted to introduce a completely unpredictable fabric in this collection that makes a statement. The Zsa Zsa dress is hand-crafted from beautiful and highly visual stretch lycra. Think of a dress that makes you feel supported all over, creates the most beautiful curves and accents the body. For the fun and adventurous bride, you can even swim in it at the end of the night.”
The Memoirs Of Her collection will also be the brand’s first dive into the Metaverse, with 10 brides-to-be to receive an exclusive NFT gift with their gown purchase. Megan said it was the perfect opportunity to introduce something new to the bridal market. “We have always been early adopters in the industry, so introducing NFTs as a gift with purchase is our way of starting to immerse ourselves in the Metaverse, where we can already see highly respected fashion brands investing in.” She adds, “We wanted to explore this idea of taking something old and breathing new life into it, which is how the NFT idea came about. I knew this was the collection to pair traditional heritage art forms, like poetry and calligraphy, with modern keepsakes like NFTs.”

VERA WANG BRIDE
Vera Wang Bride, the high fashion, luxury brand that forms part of Pronovias Group which is on track to reach its goal of a 40% sustainability component in all its dresses by 2025, launches its new collection for 2023. From charming, reworked classical silhouettes to edgier fashion-forward statements, these 54 dresses and accessories all have the hallmarks of Vera Wang’s fashion language.
Hi-lo and bustled skirts, clean bandeau tops and deconstructed ball gowns mixed with debutante design details such as belted ties with lace peplums are some of the highlights along with corseted bustiers with see-through panels and cross-your-heart drapes are modest, but also put a deliberate focus on the décolleté.
Style directions in the new collection see experimental silhouettes including modern bridal shapes such as skirt and crop-top two pieces, pantsuits, and sensual dresses. Lustrous fabrics include new Duchesse, mikado, and taffeta fabrics that are softer and silkier than ever and embedded in crystals and pearls. Playful design details such as lace peplums, cross-your-heart bodices, and mini bows create a certain sense of modesty while also highlighting the décolleté with artisan-made accessories playing a prominent role. From detachable peasant sleeves and opera gloves to Elizabethan-style ruffled collars and bibs, these new add-ons allow brides to transform even the most minimal styles. “What I tried to do this time is create accessories that can personalize your wedding dress when and how you want,” clarifies Wang. She adds, “Women right now are reconsidering what bridal means,” referring to the current mood for unorthodox looks and ‘secondary’ bridal dresses for the wedding celebration. “I think we’ve done everything possible to create a wide range of looks with this collection, which I hope will appeal to so many different brides everywhere.”
In line with the Pronovias Group’s inclusivity policy that applies to all the brands in its portfolio, all the Vera Wang Bride 2023 dresses are available in a range of sizes from 32 to 64 (from 0 to 32). www.verawangbride.com

BO & LUCA
Bo & Luca couture gowns are made, hand-beaded and hand-dyed in their Indian-based atelier. Using an ancient Indian technique known as Tambour, each bead is carefully hand-sewn onto the finest silk by local master craftsmen and women over a three to six-month process. The entire journey celebrates the feminine and carefree romanticism which only the delicate hand-beading, embroidery, and hand-dyeing can emulate. Incorporating this age-old technique into each design produces a finer, more intricate, and higher quality result than machine beading, which is a more favoured method in modern garment manufacturing.
Bo & Luca encourages handmade creations and intertwines this value into each gown created under their diffusion brand, Temple. Whilst many Temple gowns are created in their Indian ateliers, the recent partnership with their European atelier has allowed them to diversify their offering into commercially viable gowns which appeal to their bohemian-loving brides with a reduced budget. Temple allows inclusivity and ensures that more brides can make the dream of being a Bo & Luca bride a reality. www.boandluca.com
ANDREA HAWKES
British bridal designer Andrea Hawkes has introduced her Amaryllis 2023 collection named after the flower which stands the tallest of all winter blooms and symbolises pride, strength and determination which has been Andrea’s creative inspiration. She tells us, “I designed Amaryllis as a celebratory collection, each look has a unique element that will allow our brides to truly express who they are. We have seen so much strength and determination in our brides over the last couple of years; it only seemed right to design a collection that will make them feel proud when walking down the aisle. It’s all about confidence and enabling each bride to sparkle and shine bright whilst enjoying their special day surrounded by their loved ones. Amaryllis is a celebration of individuality.”
Cut from the highest quality natural silks, Andrea’s collections are made in London by her in-house team. Featuring 12 dresses and two tops in light to heavy-weight silks, Amaryllis showcases Andrea’s signature clean cut and minimalist aesthetic with a focus on fit and shape to create both natural and sweeping silhouettes for the modern bride. Contoured corsetry and structured box pleat skirts with hidden pockets feature alongside fluid and split-front dresses. Necklines and back details are square, V-shaped or low, designed to be worn bare or layered with sheer chiffon and georgette silks. Sleeves are either statement blouson, off-the-shoulder, classic long or wide or slim spaghetti straps to perfectly offset the skirt shapes.
Sustainability has always been at the heart of Andrea’s brand ethos working exclusively in natural silks including dress linings. All lace is sourced and produced from French mills with ethical working practices. The London studio enables Andrea to work closely with brides across made-to-measure and bespoke designs and a recently launched post-wedding alteration service offers brides the opportunity to re-purpose their dress by the in-house team creating luxury wardrobe staples that can be re-worn for years to come.

TOP TIPS FOR FINDING THE ONE!
We know how stressful finding your dream gown can be, so it’s important to look online for inspiration on what type of features you like or dislike – Pinterest will be your best friend. Many brides go into their appointment with a dress in mind but come out with something completely different, so be open-minded and try on a few different styles to see what suits your body shape and personal style best.
Search online for local companies or ask for referrals from loved ones when looking for boutiques to visit. Check out the suppliers’ websites and social media pages to ensure the stores stock styles or designers you like. Read reviews to find out what other brides thought of the team and the service offered throughout the whole experience.
It can be tricky deciding who to bring along to your bridal appointment but avoid bringing a whole crowd as everyone will have different opinions, which can quickly become overwhelming. We suggest inviting only a select few most important to you, such as your mum, grandmother, siblings or closest friends. Make sure to call ahead to check how many people the boutique allows.
Be open and honest with your stylist, who will help you select a beautiful dress that fits your price range. The worst thing you could do is fall in love with a gown only to find out that it’s well over your budget – don’t torture yourself if you can’t afford it. You will also need to remember to save some money for the accessories and alterations.
It’s essential to wear nude underwear when trying gowns on, and avoid bright or bold patterns at all costs! If you’re planning to wear shapewear on the day, bring this along to get the full effect. Also, wear heels similar to those you’ll wear on the day to see if alterations are needed.
Remember the time of year for your wedding when shopping for a gown. Think of breathable fabrics in summer like chiffon, crepe, and tulle while avoiding long sleeves as you don’t want to be too hot on the day. For the colder months, Mikado, brocade and velvet are perfect materials. Be prepared and accessorise the gown with a bridal wrap or jacket for outdoor pictures.

THE hair NECESSITIES
Achieve wedding-ready locks with multi-award-winning celebrity hair stylist and TV hair expert Vicki Lord
Multi-award winner Vicki Lord (www.vickilord.co.uk) is no stranger to the wonderful world of bridal hair; indeed, with more than 30 years of experience, weddings are her passion. The current brand ambassador for Colour Wow, this work has most recently taken her to Australia. She can list among her latest celebrity clients Jack Whitehall, Roxy Horner, Kara Tointon, and Shona Mcgarty.
Vicki took a break from the whirlwind of the session hair world to speak to beauty editor Kelly Andrews about how best to prepare hair for the big day and shares her top bridal trend predictions for 2023.
What’s the best time to seek out a bridal hair stylist and start thinking about the big-day look?
Selecting the right time to see your hair stylist for a consultation and trial is paramount and brides are always eager to book it months or even a year in advance. That said; although it may seem like a good idea, do bear in mind that hair fashions change seasonally throughout the year. Summer may be about braids, whereas winter could usher in a time of slick buns. I suggest and recommend having a trial approximately three to four months prior to your big day allowing your locks plenty of time to grow, while catering for a colour change and fashions. This will also give you enough time to find an alternative hair stylist just in case you’re not comfortable with your first choice.
Why are consultations such an important part of the process? Consultations are key when selecting your desired look for your special day. I’ve experienced many brides coming to me with photos of what they’d like their hair to look like, but sadly overlook important aspects that play a vital role when selecting a style. The shape of the face, the texture of the hair, and most importantly the neckline of that all-important dress are all crucial. For example, if you have a square jawline and want a side bun this will likely exaggerate the width of the face. I work a lot with shapes and silhouettes to make sure the look that’s chosen best complements all of my brides’ features beautifully. A good hair stylist
should be able to help and guide you to choose the perfect wedding hair for your dress.
What’s the most important consideration in the run up to W-day? It’s important to maintain the health of your hair prior to your big day. I’d recommend regular trims and conditioning treatments to keep your luscious locks in tip top condition. After all, shiny, healthy hair looks great on camera!
What bridal hair trends do you expect to see emerging in 2023? Personally, I’d like to see editorial runway hairstyles on brides and will be working on this innovative trend with my soon-to-be-weds as well as teaching these techniques to other bridal hair and make-up artists in my new academy course launching in 2023.
Delving into 2023 fashion trends, I feel inspired by 90s spiky buns as seen on the likes of Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and other social media influencers. Centre partings and wet-look styles with high shine as seen on Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Balmain runways are also fashionforward looks to keep an eye out for. I also love Giorgio Armani’s simplistic ponytails, bubble braids and pigtails.
Big hair accessories are making an appearance within designers’ collections. Think head scarves, large bows, Frida Kahlo-style flower crowns, and mini and beaded headbands. I’d love to see a bridal take on all of these to complement hair and gowns this year.

TRIED AND TESTED
Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, making the appearance of those dreaded lines and wrinkles more pronounced. But RoC’s new Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer comes to the rescue with SPF 30 helping to restore skin’s natural moisture, visibly replumping lines and replenishing hydration. CWM editor Rachel Westall put it to the test.
“As a woman in my 30s, my skin is an area I need to pay attention to, and with RoC endorsed by one of my all-time fave gals, Sarah Jessica Parker, I was already sold! These winter months can be so harsh on your skin so this has been a welcome addition to my morning routine, keeping my face hydrated with a natural glow. It’s superlightweight so it’s easy to apply and leaves no residue behind, only soft smooth skin all day. I can’t wait to try the entire range.” £35.99, https://rocskincare.co.uk

The truth ABOUT SUGAR
Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists
Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!
The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.
Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.
READ FOOD LABELS
To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or
switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).
WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK
Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.
CURB THE CRAVINGS
No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!
IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE
A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.
HEALTHY SUGARS
Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such
as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.
FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND
Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.
A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP
All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.
Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

Look your big-day best with top expert advice
OH-SO GLAMOROUS
I’d like to give my bridal look an extra touch of glamour. What would you suggest that’s hot for spring weddings? It’s all about sleek styles in 2023, and nothing says glamour more! Here are a few options for red-carpet-ready looks.
First up is a super sleek low bun that’s tight to the head and has plenty of shine. There won’t be a hair out of place with this simplistic style. You can also create a softer, voluminous and more romantic version, but ensure to keep the look simple.
The super glam Hollywood wave trend is going nowhere and is perfect if you wish to wear your hair down. Slick one side behind your ear and add sparkle with a slide or stick-on pearls/crystals for a modern touch. You could also go for big, soft and voluminous waves for a softer version with added drama.

SMUDGE PROOF
I find my make-up smudges during the day. How do I ensure it stays in place on my wedding day? Book a morning trial with a recommended make-up artist at least six months before your wedding. Explain your concerns about cosmetics smudging so they can use products to suit your skin type as well as style. An early trial allows you to enjoy the look all day while seeing if it stands the test of time – literally! Your make-up artist can also recommend products to purchase before the wedding to touch up your look throughout the day. Ensure you have a responsible bridesmaid to keep the items close by.

Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas
ONCE UPON A TIME
We’re having a fairytale-themed wedding in a marquee and want everything to look magical. Do you have any suggestions on how we can decorate the space? Pay attention to all the little details for a fairytale-themed wedding to add a magical atmosphere to your day. You’ll need to tie together the decoration, bridal attire, wedding stationery, catering options and the cake to create a statement theme. Think soft lighting, pastel shades, lots of florals, some vintage touches and soft fairylighs to make the room feel magical. A floral archway will set the mood and give your guests a great photo opportunity too.
Long wooden banquet tables create a more secret garden style, while round tables with linen give a more elegant and fairytale vibe. Adding vintage candelabra or lantern centrepieces will create extra impact.
If the budget allows, details such as antique picture frames and hurricane vases with candles on tree stumps will complete the look. Think about glass chandeliers hanging in the marquee if you want to go all out.

SETTING THE SCENE
Our wedding day is approaching, and I want everything to be perfect on the day. What advice can you share when it comes to creating a stress-free day?
The days leading up to your wedding should be an exciting and stressfree time – it’s all in the planning. At The Dower House Hotel, we share our event orders with couples to ensure we’re all on the same page regarding the big day. That way, our clients can relax knowing all the details are being taken care of. I usually attend weddings, meaning couples have a familiar face on-hand throughout the day.
Creating a calming atmosphere for fun morning preparations is key, something we can offer thanks to our beautiful Wedding Dressing Room. Assign your wedding party with tasks that need sorting, like final touches or essential information to remember. They’re there to support you during the entire wedding and not just the vows, so put them to work. You both need to be calm and stress-free on the day, so ensure your entire day is focused on celebrating your commitment to each other!

HAPPILY EVER AFTER
We’re having an outdoor wedding and looking for the perfect blooms to match our fairytale style – what would you suggest? There isn’t a better colour scheme to match a fairytale wedding than a rainbow of pastel colours.
Go for pale pink and ivory preserved roses, pink preserved gypsophila to make gorgeous floral clouds along with touches of lilac and pale-yellow dried flowers.
What fairytale would be complete without piling on the drama? Include lashings of pale pink pampas grass that flutter in the breeze outside.
Focus on large-preserved flower heads for bouquets, such as roses, achillea and fluffy pastel hydrangeas. Add some pampas grass, bunny tails and ruscus leaves for the ultimate look – all finished with pastel satin ribbons.
Use pampas grass and gypsophila clouds for the venue styling. Opt for a stunning floral backdrop with a pastel rainbow of dried flowers. With dried and preserved flowers, there are no seasonal limitations. Plus, you’ll be able to keep the blooms long after the wedding!

FASHION-FORWARD
I’m looking for attire for my spring wedding; what advice can you share with me?
Spring is such an exciting season for weddings. Floral and fauna choices always heavily dictate colour palettes this time of year. Choose fresh pastels and tints rather than stronger shades to capture the crisp spring light. As the weather can vary, you’ll want to keep that brightness.
I strongly recommend three-piece attire with a waistcoat for an extra layer of warmth for those outdoor moments. The Peter Posh range carries a variety of options that work with spring colours and checks that continue to be popular.
The left Hadley suit in this picture is perfect if you’re working with a lemon or yellow colour palette. The floral print tie from Heirloom complements the subtle royal blue check. Or you can break up a solid colour block with a checked waistcoat from the Mulberry range, here shown with the silver Knighton suit. Cravats also move a plain suit away from feeling like work or business attire. If you’re leaning towards a lilac or pink palette, the Alveley suit on the right is perfect as it carries an amethyst tone. Helen Kirk | Sanders Hirewear www.sandershirewear.co.uk
CAPTURING MEMORIES
We’re both camera-shy and anxious about our photo being taken, but we also want a lovely album to look back on. Can you offer us some advice?
I had a bride who was very nervous about having her photo taken because she thought it was impossible to take a good photograph of her. So as part of their wedding photography package, we booked an engagement shoot to help her feel more comfortable in front of the camera. The shoot allowed the client to get to know me and see how things would work on the day. Spending some time on a pre-wedding shoot just going through the motions of being photographed will boost your confidence, and you’ll hopefully have fun.
Getting to know your photographer is essential, as they’ll be with you for most of the day. Pick a supplier whose work you like, as this will build your confidence from the get-go.

Calling all animal lovers
We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day
Ifyou’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.
WHAT TO CONSIDER
Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.
If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!
GROOMER HAS IT
As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.
If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.
THE PERFECT SETTING
The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.
Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.
76
PET SITTER
Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.
If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!
BON A-PET-TREAT
One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.
If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.
BE PREPARED
Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day. You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.
SPECIAL ROLE
Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.
For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

HONEYMOON NEWS 83
OF THE BAY On the dock
Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.
My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.
HEAVENLY ROOMS
After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view.
We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.
The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.
KICK BACK AND RELAX
As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.
The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.
GET ACTIVE
For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.
FOOD AND DRINK
The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.
During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.
If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.
EXPLORE
The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).
There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.
