Summer lovin’

Hellolovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding! Summer has entered the chat, and I couldn’t be more excited! We’re seeing many festival-themed weddings and outdoor nuptials thanks to the more consistent weather, various seasonal blooms and extra daylight for celebrations.

If you’re embracing the outdoors, remember to provide loved ones with some shaded areas so they can take breaks from the sun. Why not supply sun cream for favours and opt for an ice cream truck for some real summer vibes? If possible, avoid direct sunlight at the hottest points of the day and look for breathable attire to stay cool. For those concerned about the heat, your suppliers will help advise accordingly.

As the time of year is so popular for weddings, ensure you book companies as soon as possible as they will get booked up quickly. Start the planning process with an open mind and ensure you ultimately plan a wedding that symbolises you both. Remember that teamwork makes the dream work! Once you have set a budget, decided on a theme and booked a venue, everything else will fall into place. To help with the process, we’re hand-selected suppliers around the region to help bring your vision to life. We’ve got you covered from showstopping venues, styling inspiration, expert advice, the latest news and trending fashion. We’ve even got stunning local weddings and styled shoots to help inspire.

Be inspired by this romantic and intimatestyled shoot at the Rochford Estate.

TIME TO RELAX

Located in Derbyshire on 24 acres, The Spa at Breedon Priory offers the ultimate setting for pre-wedding pampering. With state-of-the-art facilities, a range of luxurious treatments, attentive staff and fantastic lunches – it’s no wonder why it’s such a popular location. I was fortunate enough to try the Just the Two of Us package with my partner, which left us on cloud nine.

After enjoying a welcoming smoothie shoot freshly prepared by the chefs, the friendly team showed us around the facilities before leaving us to get changed into the fluffy robes and flip-flops provided.

We started the session with the four thermal cabins overlooking the vitality pool, including the Herbal Steam Bath, Himalayan Salt Sauna, Herbal Sauna and Aroma Steam Room, before cooling down thanks to the ice fountain and three experience showers. The different water settings, music, lighting and scents added to the luxurious experience.

The two outdoor heated pools were our favourite spaces! The Outdoor Infinity Edge Relaxation Pool featured underwater massage jets and submerged seating, while The Vitality Pool had plenty of overhead and underwater jets. Both settings were perfect for relaxing with a drink in hand while enjoying the stunning views of the tranquillity garden before heading to the Pure Relaxation Room to relax on the luxurious loungers with cosy blankets. Here we felt our stresses and strains vanish after the hassle and bustle of everyday life.

We enjoyed a delicious two-course lunch in the beautifully decorated Terrace Restaurant. Using fresh and local ingredients where possible, the talented chefs worked their magic to provide us with a memorable meal starting with a double-baked cheese souffle with parmesan, gruyere and chive sauce. I enjoyed perfectly cooked roasted cod with crispy potato terrine, piperade and a salsa verde for the main. The floor-to-ceiling windows ensured we had the perfect views of the surrounding countryside while the attentive staff provided a smooth service.

Included in our package was a 45-minute session in the private Hideaway Suite, complete with a hot tub, lounge area, shower room, sweet treats and a bottle of Processo to enjoy. We relaxed on the outdoor lounger for two with plenty of blankets to cosy up together and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere before heading to the couple’s treatment room for a 45-minute body scrub and massage. The expert beauty therapists tackled our problem areas and left us feeling a million dollars! After such a relaxing session, we headed to the Slumber Lounge to rest on the comfortable loungers surrounded by private curtains.

The Spa at Breedon Priory is the perfect location to take a break from wedding planning, with multiple spa days and treatments available. The passionate staff were fantastic from start to finish; they went above and beyond to ensure we had the perfect day. We will definitely be returning!

chapter

Claire and James had a wedding to remember at Hodsock Priory

Images courtesy of Laura Jayne Photographer

These lovebirds met at school but didn’t connect until eight years ago at a nightclub, where they bonded over their mutual love for chicken and cheesy chips at the end of the night.

James proposed at Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa back in 2018. Claire says, “He sent me off for a spa day with my mum and later in the day, James was waiting on one knee in our suite. He had then arranged a surprise engagement party for that evening with our closest family and friends.”

Here the bride shares details about their special day…

29 REAL WEDDINGS

After

I was actually hungover in the morning, so I was pretty impressed at the miracle the hair and make-up ladies managed – I felt like a real princess!

Guests received cookies by Chessy Bakery for favours as well as egg cups for those staying over. Our friend sang during the ceremony, which was special!

I wore a Maggie Sottero dress from Elizabeth Kate Bridal in Crowle. I originally had an Enzoani gown, but decided the A-line option was more suitable after having a baby – I felt comfortable all day! cancelling our wedding three times due to Covid-19, we finally tied the knot!
30
We both loved the exclusivity and beautiful setting at Hodsock Priory.

The table plan arch featured ribbon and table numbers, which represented something special in our lives with corresponding pictures on the tables. For instance, table one represented our baby while table two was for our two dogs.

The bridesmaids wore sage green gowns, while the flowergirl had an ivory dress with a sage ribbon. James and the groomsmen all wore three-piece suits in navy. Guests loved the prosecco wall and flower wall, which created the perfect backdrop to pictures. We opted for mauve and pink flowers with foliage for our blooms. Single candélabre with faux flower arrangements made up the centrepieces.
31 REAL WEDDINGS

Great musicians performed throughout the day, which were big hits with guests.

We arranged a playlist for our DJ beforehand by asking for song requests on our invites.

The fireworks were a lovely surprise from our in laws.

The wedding was such a whirlwind, but we couldn’t stop smiling all day! It was just so much fun and so amazing to celebrate with loved ones.

Our daughter coming down the aisle in a cart lead by our nephews stood out to us.

The vows, speeches, first dance and boogying with loved ones was so special.

The perfect

DAY

34
Rebecca and Leigh tied the knot at The Dower House Hotel Images courtesy of GJA Photography

Rebeccaand Leigh first met in 2009 through a group of mutual friends and made it official a few months later.

Leigh proposed in February 2021 on a typical Friday night after work. A few days prior, he had secretly asked one of Rebecca’s good friends if she could chat with her about weddings and her preferences regarding rings to see if she wanted to be surprised or pick out her own. Rebecca says, “I never clicked as it was a general conversation we girls normally have.” She continues, “So, I was very confused when Leigh mentioned that exact conversation before asking if I wanted to get married! We then sat down together and picked an engagement ring, which came the next day when Leigh officially asked me.”

SETTING THE SCENE

When planning the wedding, the pair worked as a team to create a magical day they both enjoyed. Leigh was never a huge fan of marriage or a big wedding, so Rebecca wanted to ensure he had a great day. She had previously been to a wedding at The Dower House Hotel and fell in love with the property – she wanted to tie the knot there ever since. The scenery outside is beautiful, as are the buildings and spacious wedding areas. Once the pair were engaged, they had an appointment to view the Hotel and were amazed further. The bedrooms were so big and spacious, which was essential as many guests were staying for the whole weekend. The staff and wedding planner helped the nearlyweds create their perfect day throughout the planning process and on the special day. The most important thing for the pair was having all their loved ones together, something that doesn’t happen very often as Rebecca’s side of the family lives all around the UK and some even in Australia.

THE MAIN EVENT

The bride was nervous and anxious all morning about the upcoming ceremony and walking out in front of everyone. Thankfully, there were plenty of distractions! She says, “Being surrounded by the bridal party, getting ready and having a beautiful breakfast helped calm my nerves. I became a little emotional when it was time for the ceremony; this continued as I walked down the aisle and heard our singer. Once I got to the end of the aisle to Leigh, everything seemed to settle down.”

The florist highlighted the bride’s love for roses and gypsophila throughout the blooms and bouquets. The groomsmen had gypsophila buttonholes, while the mothers and grandmothers wore white rose corsages, which the flowergirl had a smaller version of. The large flower display on the registrar’s table was moved onto the top table for the reception, and there were large flower displays on each side of The Folly.

The wedding breakfast area featured a stunning backdrop behind the top table as well as green chair and table drapes. Large white lanterns with LED candles and purple rose heads made up the centrepieces. Scratch cards in personalised card wallets were given to guests as favours for some added fun.

A large board was displayed outside the Hotel and matched the rest of the stationery, including the welcome sign displayed as guests arrived.

The Dower House Hotel supplied the catering on the day, and the chefs used fresh ingredients to create the ultimate meal! Everyone had fabulous things to say about the dishes and buffet. For a sweet treat in the evening, guests enjoyed an alternate green and white cake, which featured a wooden cake topper and flowers that matched the bouquets. The sweet cart beside the gift table was a massive hit with loved ones.

LOOKING YOUR BEST

Rebecca had always wanted a big flowing dress and fell in love with Sabrine from the Blu collection by Morilee. It featured stunning beading and frosted embroidered appliqués on an elegant organza ball gown with a horsehair hem. She says, “I looked precisely how I’d imagined on my wedding day! My hair, make-up and wedding dress were perfect!”

REAL WEDDINGS 35

The groom wore the same attire as the groomsmen but with a different coloured tie to stand out. They all wore blue suits with tartan-style waistcoats. “Leigh isn’t one for wearing suits, but I thought he looked very handsome and it was nice to see him all dresses up,” says the bride.

The bridesmaids wore sage green dresses, while the maid-of-honour had a slightly different shoulder strap. The little flowergirl, who was only 10 months old, wore a white dress with a flower headband and little cute matching shoes.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

A live singer performed on the piano during the ceremony, drinks reception and between the general disco in the evening to keep the day flowing. There was also a photo booth, which guests enjoyed, and they couldn’t get the children out of it towards the end of the night. The DJ played some great hits in the evening and a good mix of tunes for the different age groups. Loved ones danced all night long until it was time to rest their heads. Family and close friends being together made the pair’s day extra special. As did the incredible flowers, beautiful décor and the striking venue itself. Rebecca says, “Our wedding was even better than I’d imagined! We had lots of comments from everyone regarding how beautiful it was.”

The father-of-the-bride’s speech was a bit hit with the guests! He mentioned when Leigh first arrived on the scene and his first impressions.

CELEBRATION OF love

Discover Lucy and Chris’s festival-themed wedding Images courtesy of Gina Fernandes Photography

These lovebirds met at a pub in Wandsworth and instantly hit it off –the rest is history!

Chris popped the question in Cornwall, overlooking a local beach at their holiday home. Lucy said “yes” after the initial shock and the pair planned the ultimate wedding together. Here the bride shares details about their day…

41 REAL WEDDINGS

We had beautiful wildflowers by PickleBerry Flowers in the church.

Seeing each other for the first time felt really special. It was also great to see all our family and friends together!

We had a traditional ceremony in a church before walking a short distance to our tipi reception at Buckminster Barn.

We wanted to use local businesses and keep the cost down as much as possible.

Our florist took our brief of wild colourful flowers and came up with the best displays.

Chris purchased his suit from Charles Tyrwhitt while his ushers hired their suits from Moss Bros.
42

I went with sage green dresses in different styles for the bridesmaids’ dresses, to ensure everyone felt comfortable.

The wonderful harpist Harriet Flather played during our drinks reception! She let us choose a few songs to learn ahead of the day and then played a great selection of music everyone knew.

The Dimblebee Catering Company fed our guests a selection of canapés to start, followed by a relaxed buffet of handmade kebabs with a selection of sides for main. We had disposable cameras on each table with a jar of props for people to take fun photos and act as a conversation starter if needed!. We didn’t want a traditional wedding cake and both love cheese, so we hired The Melton Cheeseboard to provide a tiered selection.
43 REAL WEDDINGS
We carried on the festival theme with bunting, fairylights, lanterns and festival flags.

We had different flavoured cupcakes by Sugar Shamrocks to ensure there was something for everyone.

The Peel: Wood Fired Kitchen served pizzas in the evening to feed those hungry after all the dancing and drinking.

In the evening, we had a local band called Mansfield Avenue. They let us choose the songs in advance for their two sets and played our own music via their DJ in between.

My fabulous lace wedding gown was from Love Spell Design, a boutique that sells modern boho wedding dresses. My gown captured the festival theme, and I finished my look with a flower crown.

Our first dance to Wonderwall by Oasis was great and got our guests all singing along.

Our brilliant wedding

Gina

She says, “We wanted to take inspiration from the natural surroundings and the buildings’ original features to ensure everything was cohesive. I wanted to collaborate with other local businesses to showcase the talented wedding suppliers in and around Lincolnshire. We wanted to evoke a relaxed, laid-back feel to the venue and its spaces without compromising on high-end, timeless elegance. The colour palette was muted and neutral to allow the beauty of the gardens, plus details within the styling to capture the attention of nearlyweds. The venue is truly breathtaking with an understated design that still feels like the space to let your hair down and dance the night away.”

Windmill Farm provided the perfect backdrop to this relaxed shoot coordinated by Jayde Hawcock at Rustic Sunflower Wedding Photography. PERFECTION Styled to

The West Mill was the ideal setting for this industrial, boho-themed shoot

Images courtesy of Sarita White Photography

Witha vision to create a modern bohemian aesthetic, Bryony Marriott at Bobbi Wren Events pulled together a talented team of suppliers to create this shoot.

The ceremony aisle was uncomplicated yet completely breathtaking with taupe and ivory drapery from ceiling to floor, a suspended pampas cloud over a Persian-style rug and tall flowing pampas stems, all set within the walls of this industrial location. The look transpired over to the table décor with contrasting layers of fabrics, frayed-edge tulips and a dried cascading floral arrangement. An ivory buttermilk cake with an acrylic tier, buds of dried flowers and ombré stationery pulled the look together seamlessly.

The model wore a luxurious yet simple gown in thick satin, debuting a gorgeous low back to create an impacting contrast. Contemporary make-up artistry with dewy skin and block colour eyeshadow perfectly matched the ultramodern hairstyle.

Being Sophie

Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin

Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.

What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?

The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.

What have you been up to since you left the show?

I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.

You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?

Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.

Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?

I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being

70

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!

How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?

I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.

Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?

I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.

For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?

As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the

whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.

Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!

Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?

I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.

What make-up products can’t you live without?

Cream contours and eyebrow gel!

What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?

At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

RoC Skincare has been revolutionising skincare for more than 60 years boasting a legacy of firsts from the first SPF sunscreen proactively preventing signs of ageing, to being the first to discover a method for stabilising retinol. Q&A Fashion and beauty

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

BRIDAL BEAUTY

Why should I book a make-up trial for my wedding?

A make-up trial is vital for brides in many ways. Firstly, it helps to understand the chosen look with your make-up artist and see your ideas come to life before the wedding. Bring inspirational images to ensure you and the supplier are on the same page.

A trial also creates the ideal opportunity to try different options, which is why it takes longer than the make-up on the actual day. Why not try five different lip options to find the perfect shade? There might not be enough time to change something on the wedding day, like eyeliner, so it’s the ideal chance to experiment. Plus, it will ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction to any products before your wedding.

A make-up trial also ensures you’re comfortable around your supplier, which is essential as they’ll be with you all morning on the big day.

If you’re unhappy with your trial, contact your makeup artist and be honest with them. You can then book a second trial for peace of mind. Don’t be afraid to change anything; your make-up artist won’t be offended and would rather know to ensure you achieve the perfect look.

DREAM-WORTHY ACCESSORIES

What should we consider when creating bespoke wedding jewellery?

Every couple has a preconceived idea about their dream wedding look; this doesn’t just stop at the dress, suit and shoes. Outfits are only complete with jewellery, especially wedding attire.

A talented designer can create bespoke wedding pieces to coordinate with your outfit, theme or venue. The price tag for commissioned pieces might put you off the idea, but you might be surprised after enquiring. Pricing varies according to the request and the mediums used. If I include real gold or silver in your pieces, then this will increase the price. However, a bride will often only wear the jewellery on her wedding day or other special occasions. So, they usually don’t need to be entirely sterling silver or gold. You may instead opt for a plated option, which gives the same look but at a more affordable price.

As a jewellery designer, I can offer the more traditional bridal jewellery usually seen at bridal boutiques. But I firmly believe you should be more outrageous on your big day, particularly if you’re going bespoke. I also

use modern mediums such as polymer clay and resin alongside traditional crystals, beads, wire and pearls to create stunning pieces that are never the same. You may have considered what your bridal party is wearing dresses-wise, but have you considered their earrings, necklaces and bracelets? You can colour-coordinate your best girls with polymer clay jewellery, which is lightweight and easy to wear. If you have any men in your bridal party, they can have a stud or cufflinks that match your colour scheme, and so could your future husband.

After your big day, I can even preserve some of your flowers into a jewellery keepsake so you can hold those special memories close. I can do this with rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings.

We’re after a personal wedding, and our friend mentioned a handfasting ceremony. Can you share the benefits and process?

A handfasting ceremony is perfect for Pagans, nature-loving people, Game of Thrones fans or those looking for something non-traditional. It’s a beautiful way to connect to our ancestors by participating in the same ceremony they would have had hundreds of years ago.

A handfasting ceremony is a treat for the senses, with something interesting happening throughout and many ways to involve your guests. The visual aspect gives it the wow factor and is where we get the term ‘tying the knot’ from. Each ceremony is unique because you choose what to include and can add personal touches.

The ceremony takes place in a sacred circle, and you will be taken on a journey around the circle from north to west using the four elements of air, fire, water and earth to represent different parts of your marriage. We end by tying your hands together as a symbol of your unity.

CAPTURE THE MOMENT

What are the benefits of having a videographer at our wedding?

There’s no better way to encapsulate a wedding day than through film, bringing back all those special memories and emotions. Whether shared with those who couldn’t attend, shown to future generations or watched back yourselves to reflect on the day, the film will tell the full story of your wedding. You can’t always be in two places at once, so we’re here to find those subtle moments you might miss in the blink of an eye.

Videographers are discreet when they work; I have a small high-quality kit and have continually developed a great working relationship with the photographers I meet on the day. It’s our job to ensure we’re out of the way of guests and each other, leaving you to celebrate worry-free.

One of the most common regrets from newlyweds is that they wish they had hired a videographer. So, take a moment to look at your budget, and see if you can make it work to ensure your special day is always there to remember.

WEDSPIRATION

We’re looking for wedding inspiration to show our suppliers, what advice can you share when it comes to creating a mood board?

Mood boards are a great wedding tool that can provide clarity during planning. Not only can they help narrow down your choices if you’re feeling overwhelmed with ideas, but you can also share them with other suppliers to help communicate your vision more clearly.

Start offline, as you’re more likely to end up down a rabbit hole otherwise! Look at the magazines you like reading first. It doesn’t have to be wedding related; it could be fashion, home interiors or travel – whatever interests you. Visit your local haberdashery to pick up swatches of your favourite colours and textures of materials, even ribbons and trims. You could even pop to your local hardware store to pick up some paint charts – choose whatever you’re drawn to the most. Then, it’s time to narrow down your options.

Lay all your items out so you can see everything before considering what goes together and what excites you the most. Keep moving things around before you pin everything down on a board. Ask yourself, do these colours represent the season you’re getting married in? Will this style fit in with the kind of venue you want, and is the atmosphere what you’re aiming for? If not, keep going until you’re happy. Words are powerful and can help guide your choices. So, name your mood board to summarise the overall vibe or pick three keywords that describe it. Check everything aligns with your words whenever you’re making a decision. When you get to this stage, put your mood board somewhere you can see it. If you look at it every day and feel excited, you’re clearly on your way to creating your dream day. I offer The Creative Kickstart service to help create a clear vision if you need extra help, so you feel confident moving forward.

YOUR TYPE ON PAPER

We’re looking for on-trend stationery to match our outdoorthemed wedding. What do you suggest we look for?

For an outdoor wedding, you could look to the seasons for inspiration to give the most natural palette of colours to work with. Stunning tones are abundant for spring and summer weddings, from soft pinks, lilacs and creams to brighter purples and greens. Autumn introduces deeper creams, taupes and oranges, while winter welcomes rich greens, creams and intense reds or purples. Make your stationery personal by including personal elements like illustrations of your flowers, wedding venue, hobbies or pets. Don’t forget to ask your stationer about paper options. Textured papers from pure whites to subtle flecks can add an extra dimension your guests will love. Seed paper is a beautiful option for an outdoor wedding that gives back to nature. Embedded with wildflowers, guests can enjoy planting the blooms after your wedding day. Remember, the best trend to follow for your stationery is your style, as it should feel most true to you by reflecting on the wedding day and telling your love story.

DON’T STOP THE MUSIC

We’d really like a singer to perform outside during our wedding breakfast and reception, what should we consider?

Things to take into consideration are shelter and electricity. Most singers will require a power socket for their equipment. Most will bring a long extension lead, but it must be close enough to reach. I now have a battery-powered speaker to play in any area.

The shelter is the most essential factor. Not only will this protect your performer in extreme weather conditions, but it also protects their equipment. Speakers, iPads and electricals can overheat and, of course, don’t mix with water.

You should work together with your venue and entertainer before and during the day, as the ever-changing weather may change the location of your singer ever so slightly.

Love through a lens

We’ve rounded up local photographers from around the region

LAURA JAYNE RICHARDS AT LAURA JAYNE PHOTOGRAPHER

When did your passion for photography start?

I was encouraged to be creative from a very young age, and my father always had a camera in his hands. After studying Art GCSE and A levels, I studied fashion and advertising photography at university. I adored capturing people and their personalities and began photographing families after my studies before finally finding my passion for wedding photography. The emotions, interactions and importance hooked me.

What do you offer newlyweds?

I offer support and guidance with a friendly face in some of the most nerve-wracking moments of their lives. I pride myself on making my

couples feel at ease in front of the camera, allowing me to capture beautiful, authentic and organic moments. My style is true to life, with its brightness and timelessness. I hope my work never ages and couples can reminisce on their photographs throughout generations.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I genuinely love my job, but my favourite part has to be the couple portraits! Here I can be creative and capture the love between my beautiful couples.

What advice can you share with nearlyweds?

Don’t stress the small stuff. Plan your day how you want to, and ensure you have time to soak it all in.

SIMON DEWEY AT SIMON DEWEY PHOTOGRAPHY

When did your passion for photography start?

I always appreciated photography but only realised I had a skill for it once I received a camera as a wedding present. I realised this was my passion in life, lots of photos later, and I’ve been photographing weddings for the last 12 years. I’ve always had a very documentary style with a hands-off approach, and while my style has come on leaps and bounds, my ethos has remained the same – it’s all about a couple’s day, and the photos are secondary to the experience.

What do you offer newlyweds?

I offer a relaxed and unobtrusive photography style that lets you enjoy

the day while beautiful photographs are captured. All those authentic moments are where the true beauty of the day is.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part is meeting many different people and telling many unique stories. I love that weddings are so different, with various characters and emotions on the day.

What advice can you share with nearlyweds?

The wedding day will fly by, so ensure you plan moments to pause and take it all in.

PHOTOGRAPHY 79

When did your passion for photography start?

My first photography experience was being given a little 35mm point-and-shoot camera as a young boy. I loved taking images and unwrapping the Klick-developed pack of 6 x 4 photos with my mum.

I’m fortunate to have had such supportive parents, which has helped me develop my photography from the slightly blurred images as an eight-year-old to the great images I can capture today. My passion for photography grew when I moved to the Peak District aged 15, capturing the beautiful landscape.

What do you offer newlyweds?

I have developed my style as a wedding photographer over the last 13 years, focusing on documenting weddings to capture stories unfolding and taking a short time to get some amazing wedding portraits. The most

important thing for couples is to have amazing images telling the story of their once-in-a-lifetime special day.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is capturing emotion between people, whether full of energy and laughter or more calm and even sombre moments. I love blending in and becoming just another guest that is handy with a camera. Meeting new people and being part of a party is the best! What advice can you share with nearlyweds?

I want to ensure that my couples get the chance to make the most of their wedding day and for me, that’s them cherishing precious time with loved ones. Ensure you print your favourite images, especially those with your closest circle. Put them up around your home and enjoy the happy memories that each photo should bring.

DANNY INWOOD AT DANNY INWOOD PHOTOGRAPHY

When did your passion for photography start?

My passion for photography started at a young age, where I would take photos on holidays and at special events. It was only a 35mm film pointand-shoot camera, but it was the foundation for my love of photography. It was then at secondary school that I opted for photography in art. Along my journey, I attended several different photography workshops where I furthered my knowledge and experience.

What do you offer newlyweds?

I support couples at every step, from their enquiry to delivering the images. I always tell my couples that I’m at the end of my phone for a quick chat, message or email no matter how big or small the question. I offer my newlyweds, as standard, a 12-month passworded cloud-based (Pixieset) gallery with all of their edited high-resolution images. Here they

can download, share and even order large artwork prints. With every package, pairs receive a wooden presentation box with 100 6x4 prints of their choice along with a matching wooden USB memory stick with two sets of images, one with high-resolution photos and the other with lowresolution that are social media ready.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I love talking to people about their interests and wedding plans. I like to find elements in common from the moment I talk to potential wedding couples, so I’m considered a friend leading up to the day to aid the ease of taking natural pictures.

What advice can you share with nearlyweds?

Enjoy the day and take in every minute, from getting ready with your wedding party to embracing the first dance. Keep relaxed and allow me to capture the wedding as it happens naturally. Check out: www.dannyinwoodphotography.com

CLAUDIA HARRISONWHITE AT CHERISHED PHOTOGRAPHY BY

When did your passion for photography start?

When my daughter was born, I wanted to remember all the little details and the big milestones. I’ve always been the person with a camera at weddings and family events – I love capturing special moments!

What do you offer newlyweds?

Everything starts with a chat and often a cuppa! Here I want to know all about the wedding from the guest list, if pets are coming, any treats or surprises lined up. We would discuss what you're looking for and devise a plan to deliver on these expectations. I always offer pre-shoots to get everyone comfortable and relaxed for the big day. The venue, colour scheme and theme discussions are a vital part of my planning process as these set the tone as to how I edit the images and the overall feel.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I enjoy going back over the images to almost relive the event, like the speeches that can often be joyful and emotional. I’ve witnessed a bride’s daughter hand the groom adoption paperwork, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room – including mine!

What advice can you share with nearlyweds?

It’s your day, so be picky with everything from your guest list to your suppliers. Have an unplugged day by asking guests to put their phones down and let your photographer take the pictures. Check out: www.cherishedbyclaudia.co.uk

PAUL SCREEN AT SCREEN PHOTOGRAPHY

When did your passion for photography start?

I took a point-and-shoot camera on a safari holiday in Kenya 16 years ago and within two months, my wife bought me a Canon EOS 400D and Tamron 70-300mm lens for Christmas. I started mainly with sports photography as a hobby before turning into a full-time photographer about seven years ago. These days, the photography and lighting kit is vast compared to where it all started.

What do you offer newlyweds?

I offer creative wedding photographs using a drone or setting up a fivelight system, sometimes with gels and flares. I love photographing and flying the drone while being a big part of weddings. When returning to repeat venues, I constantly push boundaries and do something different with my couples.

What advice can you share with nearlyweds?

Ensure your photographer is approachable, knowledgeable and can use light on those darker days while blending into the background. They'll be with you for up to 13 hours on a long summer’s day if you also have twilight pictures done – you must get along with them. Check out: www.screenphotography.co.uk

AMY-LEE WINFIELD AT CURVYBRIDES PHOTOGRAPHY

When did your passion for photography start?

I have done wedding photography for about 20 years, but I decided to specialise in curvy and camera-shy couples after my own wedding. I’m a larger girl, and it takes a photographer's care and attention to know exactly how I need to look to love the outcome. I realised I could not be the only woman anxious about the images.

What do you offer newlyweds?

I offer pose sessions in my Worksop studio, where we can do private sessions if you’re not feeling confident. We can shoot tethered so you can see the outcomes to work with us to develop poses that work for you before going somewhere in public, like a local garden, to get more confident in front of the camera.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

I enjoy sending the images to my clients as I edit their wedding photos and hear their reactions! It’s great when they love the shots, but I also appreciate it when they ask me to change or tweak things, as those little things make all the difference.

What advice can you share with nearly-weds?

Leave plenty of time for photos! You will need 40 minutes for group shots and then at least an hour for couple portraits, which is often the quietest and most intimate part of the day.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.

Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

Dressed TO IMPRESS

The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:

CHOOSING A STYLE

There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.

Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.

Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.

Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.

Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.

Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.

HIRING

Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance

and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.

Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.

ACCESSORIES

The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.

Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.

Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.

Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.

Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.

A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.

If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!

Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.

Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf.

Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.

Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.

GROOMING

Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.

AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.

UNDERWATER LIFE

Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.

indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.

A FOODIES’ PARADISE

Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.

Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.

FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL

Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...

TRUE ROMANCE

It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

HONEYMOON REVIEW 89

HAVEN A Celtic

Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland

WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!

Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.

A SPOT OF R&R

The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.

If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!

We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...

This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.

As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!

The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.

HEARTY FARE

The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.

This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.

Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.

I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.

When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.

I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.

For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 91

Do not disturb

Olivia Gibson ventures to Staffordshire for a spa minimoon at Moddershall Oaks

Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.

I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.

REST YOUR HEAD

With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.

All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.

When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.

THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION

Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to

snuggle up.

The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.

I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.

Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
