Why not enjoy it with a glass of the award-winning Cotswolds Dry Gin which is a full-strength spirit made with nine carefully-considered botanicals including lavender from the Cotswolds and freshly peeled grapefruit and lime zest? NEW £2 MILLION WEDDING AND EVENTS VENUE TO LAUNCH IN THE COTSWOLDS
A new £2 million state-of-the-art events and wedding venue is to launch in the Cotswolds. Midlands-based property development and investment company The Wigley Group has formed a joint venture with leading National Hunt racehorse trainer Ben Pauling to establish The Naunton Downs Estate at his base near Cheltenham.
The company has planning consent for the 5,000 sq ft barn which will cater for exclusive weddings, family celebrations, and corporate and racing events and is planning to start construction in 2023 with completion scheduled for the second half of 2024.
Pauling moved to a new state-of-the-art yard last April after buying the 200-acre site which also includes a golf course and a dining, entertainment and artisan retail venue. The joint venture will also invest around £300,000 in upgrading the existing venue – which is currently also home to the Fitzdares Club – and golfing facilities.
Pauling, who moved his operations to Naunton in Gloucestershire from Bourton Hill Farm last year, said: “We are really excited to move this forward and to have formed the new partnership with The Wigley Group. They are a company we have got to know very well and they are very much embedded in the racing world as well as having a track record of commercially successful developments.
“Purchasing Naunton Downs and creating the new yard was a

real game changer for us as a racing business but the site has much more potential. We are in a great location in the heart of an area of outstanding natural beauty yet easily accessible from London and close to Cheltenham. The existing dining and entertainment venue and Fitzdares Club are well established as luxury destinations and we believe there is significant potential for a luxury venue in this location that can cater for a wide range of events – personal, business and racing-related.”

COOL COCKTAILS
Blacklion is Europe’s first brand of premium sipping vodka made using rare sheep’s milk. This unique spirit is farmed, fermented and distilled in the Cotswolds by entrepreneurs Tim and Tan Spittle, whose sheep farm provides the venue for Gordon Ramsay’s latest episode of Future Food Stars on BBC ONE, (series 2, episode 4) in which they also starred.
Blacklion is not only celebrated by Gordon Ramsay, but it has also won many awards for its unique taste, including the award for Best International Vodka by the prestigious American Distilling Institute. The milk for the vodka comes from Tim and Tan’s flock of Black Lion sheep, all crossbred from Swiss Valais Blacknose and grazed on what has been the family farm for two generations. Blacklion has warming after-notes with an impossibly smooth finish and is best served straight from the freezer over ice. Its original flavour has also been welcomed by top mixologists to create a range of delicious cocktails. Among the nine awards won by Blacklion in just nine months is the UK farming industry’s Diversification Farmer of the Year Award 2022. Tan Spittle tells us, “Transforming whey into a delicious premium vodka helps us further two important goals. To make the best use of our natural resources and sustain the family business.”

THE QUEENS HOTEL IN CHELTENHAM REVEALS
ROYAL CORONATION PACKAGE AVAILABLE
UNTIL 2024
First opening its doors on the 21st of July 1838, and named in honour of Queen Victoria whose coronation fell in the same year, The Queens Hotel in Cheltenham has royal roots running throughout. One of the first purpose-built hotels in Europe, this quintessential British retreat is situated at the south end of the popular Promenade in this Regency town.
The hotel’s impressive Palladian facade exudes elegance and grandeur from the moment guests walk in.
The hotel has launched the ‘Royal Coronation Package’ which is available to book now and is valid for stays until 29th February 2024, excluding weekends, during the Bath markets and the festive season in December. This package is based on two guests sharing a classic bedroom for a minimum of two nights, including breakfast.
As part of the royal Coronation Package, guests can enjoy a day out at the Slimbridge Wetlands Centre, where King Charles III is the Royal patron of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, the perfect treat for wedding guests. To find out more, visit https://suttonhotelcollection.com/experiences
The hotel hosts grand weddings for up to 120 people with a dedicated wedding coordinator, the best chefs and many areas for photographs which includes the Queens Summer Garden.
Following a hugely successful launch last year, the outdoor garden has now reopened with a delicious new menu and an exciting new
programme of events including live music, prosecco on tap and bottomless afternoon tea. It provides an outdoor sanctuary in the heart of historic Cheltenham. The theme for this year’s garden menu and events is centred around getting together and sharing. It’s the perfect place for friends and family to meet to enjoy delicious food in the sunshine.
The new seasonal menu focuses on local provenance and features dishes such as Thai-style mussels served with crusty bread designed for two to share; succulent lemon-fried tiger prawns and a delicious rosemary and garlic-baked camembert, perfect for sharing as the evenings become warmer. The pièce de résistance is the Chinese-style barbecue pork bao bun, served alongside pickled red cabbage and garlic fried pak choi.
The quirky and popular horsebox bar makes a return and the team will be serving cocktails and vodka spritzes from new UK-based partner Edwards alongside the best of British, with English wines such as Folc Rosé and local beers like Hawkstone Lager from the Cotswold Brewery, as well as other summer classics.
The Horsebox bar is home to ‘Prosecco on tap’ and, new for this year, guests can enjoy limitless prosecco with nibbles from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm every Monday to Friday, perfect for those who enjoy a post-work pick-me-up. At just £20 each for two hours, guests will have the option of pouring prosecco for themselves from the tap or having the team serve it to them.
Guests can also enjoy a bottomless afternoon tea in the garden, with 90 minutes of unlimited top-ups of chilled prosecco, freshly made sandwiches and sweet treats every day from 12 noon to 4:00 pm.

SALISBURY AND SOUTH WILTSHIRE Spotlight on...
We reveal where to wed
HATCH HOUSE, TISBURY
Hatch House is a family home in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside accessed via a set of gates and a tree-lined avenue. The 17th-century manor house was transformed in 1908 by the architect Detmar Blow. The stone exterior blends into the setting while the theatrical façade that faces the two-tiered Dutch garden commands picturesque views for miles.
Ceremonies can be held in a choice of three areas. The dining room decorated in vibrant yellow with views of the garden on two sides is a small intimate space seating up to 45 guests. Guests can leave via the hallway, where couples sign the register and venture into the garden for a drinks reception. Alternatively, the porch situated at the back of the house that overlooks the gardens is another ceremony option and the pavilion that takes centre stage in the heart of the walled garden, known as ‘the best room in the house’ offers an al fresco option. The pavilion enjoys wisteria in bloom during late spring and the garden aisle leads from the house through the ornate garden gate to the pavilion.
Receptions take place in the gardens enjoying panoramic views
stretching across to the Vale of Wardour. The central lawn of the walled garden provides ample space for a marquee and up to 200 guests can gather in a large reception here. There are smaller garden rooms that can also be used, either for extra space or for more intimate celebrations and one of them is large enough for a smaller marquee.

PYTHOUSE CLUB, TISBURY
This reception-only wedding venue sits in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside. The clubhouse faces open countryside and offers ample space for a marquee reception on the manicured grounds.

A wide veranda looks out over the stunning green landscape that offers plenty of shade and seating. The veranda can be turned into a fabulous entrance decorated with flowers, bunting and fairylights and it can also provide extra reception space before the wedding breakfast.
Inside, the Clubhouse features a fine wood floor and is filled with plenty of natural daylight. There’s a kitchen located in the main club room and
the remaining space can be turned into a cosy dining room, ideal for a pre-wedding dinner, or used as the main reception room.

THE WARDROBE WALLED
A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.
The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.
The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire.
The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.
A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.
The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day.
An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!

and Rhys met through a mutual friend who set them up. “Rhys was working in Stratford-Upon-Avon managing a bar and I was home on my summer holiday from university,” Daisy tells us. “I met my friend in the bar for a drink and that was Rhys’ cue to come over and serve us our drinks! He listened intently to my conversation, laughing at the right moments and never once taking his eyes off me! He later told our friend that I was one of the most beautiful, bubbly women he had met and he needed my number. I liked the fact that he was assertive and direct. Needless to say, I spent the rest of my summer in the bar!”
Rhys proposed at the Roman Baths in Bath
Spa on 2nd October 2020. “It was a complete surprise because I never dreamt that Rhys would propose in such a public place and I was under the illusion we were on the way to Bournemouth to visit his father,” Daisy explains. “After walking around the Roman Baths, Rhys asked an attendant to take photos of us posing with the cathedral, Bath Abbey in the background. He then got down on one knee and surprised me – we have a series of beautiful photos that captured the moment!”
After the proposal, the couple went to The Hare and Hound pub where Daisy’s parents and her best friend were waiting to surprise her with balloons, cake and champagne. “Without
“Our photographer, Gemma was truly amazing – she went above and beyond, from helping me get into my dress in the morning, to securing my veil back on at the church. She stayed longer than what she was booked for and just generally gave us so much support. I’d highly recommend her!”

Rhys realising it, the date was very meaningful because it’s my parent’s wedding anniversary!” Daisy says.
SETTING THE SCENE
St. Nicholas Church in the village of Loxley has sentimental meaning to Daisy’s family – her parents were married there and she was christened in the church so it was a natural choice for her to be married in.
Daisy travelled to the church in her step-grandfather’s vintage Aston Martin car. “This was a childhood dream come true,” she tells us. “Rhys and I hired a white vintage Imperial Viscount to take us from St Nicholas Church to The Slaughters Manor House. The time in the car travelling from the church to the manor was priceless – a quick half an hour for us both to process the fact we were newly married.”
“Our ceremony was a highlight of the day for me,” says Rhys. Daisy adds, “The memory of walking down the aisle next to my dad toward Rhys will stay with me forever. Whilst I was waiting outside with my dad to enter the church, the wind took my veil off of my head and it blew across the graveyard! One of the locals who had come down to the church to catch a glimpse of the bride got more than she bargained for! I was so grateful that she was there because she ran across the graveyard and got it for me which was caught by our videographer – the way the veil flies up into the air is hilarious (now!) and also incredible.”
After weeks of searching for reception venues, the couple visited The Slaughters Manor House in Gloucestershire. “Daisy turned to me and said this is the one,” Rhys tells us. “Tucked away in the stunning Cotswold village of Lower Slaughter, it looked so charming on arrival, with steps leading up to the impressive front-arched entrance and perfectly manicured gardens. Inside, the reception area felt welcoming and elegant, with the circular bar immediately to your right when entering. We were seated in the lounge, which was a warm intimate space, to meet the wedding coordinator and chat about our plans.”
The couple were shown around the manor and could picture their wedding taking place at the venue, with its pink lounge opposite where the dancefloor and DJ would be set up and the billiards room, where the groomsmen would inevitably be found. “Both rooms featured such ornate decorative ceilings that felt so grand yet the size and space of these rooms were perfect for us,” they tell us. “We didn’t want a large venue with so many rooms that our wedding party would be divided and split between. We wanted the day to feel intimate and this is exactly what The Slaughters Manor House provided. The wedding breakfast would be served downstairs and then the evening celebrations would be hosted upstairs - there was even a secret room leading off the lounge creating a perfect space for the teenage bridesmaids to relax away from the adults on the day!”
Because the rooms are all of such a high standard both in the manor and coach house, Daisy and Rhys found it difficult to choose the one that they wanted to stay in on their wedding night – they only decided two weeks before the big day! “We felt so excited that our close friends and family could stay with us and experience the luxury of the manor for the wedding and the following day.”
The couple chose a spring theme with touches of lemon yellow, plenty of daffodils and daisies and a reference to bees to decorate their day with. “This reflected my pale yellow diamond engagement ring and coordinated with our engagement party invites which set our theme from the start,” Daisy says. “They were illustrated with two bees facing each other, one holding a daisy flower out to the other. I contacted the designer on Etsy who adapted the artwork of the bees so that they were standing under an archway of daisies and daffodils with petals raining down on them, the bee holding the daisy flower had a top hat and the other a veil.”
Daisy and Rhys chose tall gold stands with rectangular frames and large flower arrangements for their table centrepieces. “They

“My mother always goes above and beyond, especially when it came to our wedding. I have inherited a creative flare from her so I consulted her on every decision regarding the flowers, table arrangements and favours. She also helped me source and organise the bridesmaids’ dresses and fittings. Without her, I don’t think I would’ve got everyone together to get the dresses altered and finished on time.” – Daisy
were filled with the same flowers that were displayed in the church, bouquets and buttonholes,” Daisy tells us. “These included daffodils as Rhys’s choice because he is Welsh. I chose daisies to reflect my name and all of the other flower varieties were cream, white and pale yellow mixed with soft green foliage including eucalyptus.”
The couple wanted round tables with no formal top table, instead deciding to sit with their groomsmen and bridesmaids instead of family. “Our seating chart featured our wedding bees with the table number in the centre of the petal arch and gold lettering at the top of the sign,” Daisy explains. “We also had a table plan presented on a gold stand with gold lettering in the same font as the illustration of the wedding bees. For the favours, we gifted guests a small pot of honey and small love spoons individually carved with a daisy and daffodil, plus our names and the date of our wedding.”
Daisy and Rhys also had other decorative details to style their special day. “We loved our feather wall and also the sweetie table that had a yellow ribbon tied around the sweet scoops and boxes in the shape of bee hives,” they explain.
The couple’s cake was a four-tier design covered in white fondant icing and decorated with a gold leaf design. “On top was an iced daisy and daffodil flower,” Daisy says.
LOOKING THE PART
“I chose two dresses,” Daisy tells us. “The first was a gown by Enzoani which was classic with a detachable skirt that featured a dramatic long train. I wore the skirt during the church ceremony and then removed it for the wedding breakfast and our first dance. This revealed the fitted train of the dress which had beautiful button detail going down it.”
Daisy’s second dress was a lace, strapless style with beaded detail. “It had a glamorous 1920s look to it with a small train meaning it was much easier to dance in!”
The bridesmaids wore pale lemon-coloured dresses. “They were wrap maxi dresses with a side split, chiffon overlay and one-shoulder design,” Daisy says.
Rhys wore a three-piece stone-coloured tweed suit with a floral waistcoat. “Our fathers and the groomsmen all wore similar three-piece suits in a slightly different shade and didn’t have the patterning on the back of the waistcoat,” Daisy says. “They all wore pale lemon-coloured ties and had buttonholes with daisies and daffodils in them. We hired brown shoes for everyone which finished off the look perfectly.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
The couple had a vintage tripod camera as their photo guest book which their guests loved. “Everybody had a great time during the evening dancing the night away,” they tell us. “We couldn’t stop smiling and both felt excited throughout the day. We felt so loved not just by each other but also by all of our guests and everyone involved throughout the wedding.”

Monochrome magic
Zoe and George’s special day took place at The Great Barn Tetbury decorated with a stylish black and white theme
Images courtesy of Holly Derrick Photography
Zoe and George were friends who started dating after spending more and more time together and realising how well they got on. “I went to the University of Birmingham a few months later and that’s when we made it official,” Zoe tells us. “Eights years on and now we’re married!” The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal. “We’d discussed getting married for a few years beforehand and thought it would be nice to set the date as our anniversary,” Zoe explains. “I had seen our chosen venue a few years previously on Instagram so we went to view it before we became engaged! We both fell in love with it, paid a deposit and also booked the church and our photographer - our friends thought we were crazy because we hadn’t got engaged yet! A few months passed and although I knew we were getting married, the proposal was a complete surprise - George took me out for a late birthday lunch and then my friends drove over to take me out too. They blindfolded me and the next time I opened my eyes, I was in my garden surrounded by our closest friends and family with George on one knee. Everyone had decorated the garden and house and arranged a surprise proposal and party. This was shortly after the lockdown restrictions were lifted so it was the best feeling having all of our close family and friends witness such a special moment. Although I knew that George was going to officially propose at some point, it was a complete surprise and shock when he did. Not a conventional proposal, but it worked for us!” Here, Zoe tells us all about their wedding at The Great Tythe Barn in Tetbury, Gloucestershire decorated

“In the days leading up to our wedding and on the day itself, my bother helped us so much and we’re so grateful to him. Both my dads’ speech and George’s brothers’ speech were very special, especially George’s brother’s when he said “In the week when everyone lost a queen, George gained one” - that was a memorable moment!” - Zoe
We felt nervous and excited but most of all we both felt so lucky to be surrounded by our loved ones. The church ceremony felt surreal, I do remember being very nervous waking down the aisle, and from the videos, I can see George was nervous too! George’s young niece and nephew did a reading at the church which was so sweet.
It was wonderful to have a bit of time to ourselves in a black 1930s Rolls-Royce after our ceremony so that we could relax and take it all in. The exact car has been used in Peaky Blinders and also Downton Abbey! We had a great driver and enjoyed the journey.
We had the amazing JamDuo playing the cello and piano during our church ceremony. My bridesmaids walked down the aisle to the song Can’t Help Falling In Love With You, and I walked down the aisle to Canon in D Major.

I’ve always liked the idea of a barn wedding and after looking at a few barn wedding venues, The Great Barn Tetbury was perfect in terms of size, layout and pretty outside grounds, we couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else.
The barn is beautiful, it’s decorated with a canopy of fairylights and the grounds are perfect for photos. It was the ideal size for 100 guests.
Our chocolate, lemon and vanilla cake tasted delicious. We wanted a simple design so went for the semi-naked look, and our florist added some greenery. It looked wonderful displayed below our neon sign.
After scrolling through Pinterest, I loved the idea of a mirrored table plan so we had a large arch-shaped black metal-edge mirror with Polaroid photographs displayed on which looked simplistic and modern.
The number of years that we had been together matched our number of tables so we chose years as our table numbers along with a photo of us during that year. We displayed them in black metal frames.
We wanted something simplistic for our centrepieces that fitted in with the black modern theme so we chose greenery teamed with white candles, black candle holders and clear hurricane vases. We displayed black wooden names in a hand-written font that looked effective alongside the white napkins, black candle holders and black table names.
We knew that most favours get left behind if they don’t fit in a handbag so we wanted something simple that everyone would enjoy. We chose our favourite sweetsGeorge’s were M&Ms and mine were Smarties! They were presented in clear bags with black and white stickers.
REAL WEDDINGS 33
Our cake topper matched our place names.
We displayed lanterns and other black accessories around the venue to tie in with our monochrome theme. We had a decorative welcome sign, cake signs and other small signage made using black vinyl which looked very modern.
We were guided by our talented florist about which flowers we should pick. I wanted greenery mixed with white blooms and that’s exactly what I got – I was delighted with them. I had them dried after our wedding and made into various acrylic keyrings and coasters.
On our welcome table was one of my favourite pieces of décor. Alongside the foliage, candles, black accessories (including our table plan) and a white table runner was an old retro black phone which was actually a phone guestbook. Not only did it look amazing but everybody left us such lovely messages!
Our guests tucked into sharing boards of meat, cheese varieties and bread as part of our wedding breakfast. They loved the informal main course which was a mixture of make-your-own burgers, chicken strips, chips and couscous.
We offered wedding cake and a sweetie table as dessert which went down a treat! For our evening food, we had pizza.
During the reception, we had a saxophonist perform while a magician entertained guests - everyone commented on how amazing both were. We highly recommend having something to entertain guests when the official photographs are being taken.
During our wedding breakfast, we had Singing Waiters which was one of my favourite parts of the day. Standing at the top table watching all of our close family and friends waving napkins, singing and dancing was such a good feeling and one I’ll remember forever!

George wanted something timeless and classic so he wore a stylish black tuxedo. He did try on traditional tails but it didn’t have the same effect as the tux. George stood out from the groomsmen, who also wore black tuxedos because he wore a waistcoat and the others wore cummerbunds.
My shoes were closed-toe ivory slingbacks with statement crystal embellishment which fitted with the style of my dress and veil.
I wore the dress called Nini by Blue by Enzoani from TDR Bridal. I first saw this fit-and-flare mermaidstyle lace gown online and I loved how traditional yet modern it looked with a layer of glittery tulle and a long train. It also featured an open back with a keyhole effect. I visited a few shops, where I tried on various styles of dresses, including this one, but the sample was too small so I couldn’t see the true outcome. I visited TDR Bridal and tried it on again in a bigger size and thought it was the one, but thought I best try more on - I finally settled on the Nini style!
George wore a pair of cufflinks personalised with the date of our wedding.
Our bridesmaids wore made-to-measure dark olive green-coloured dresses. They had a fishtail-shaped bottom and cowl top which looked beautiful.

Leah and Arjun Jandu married on 29th January 2023 at Manor by the Lake in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
Leah
and Arjun met online just before the pandemic and soon became engaged. “We have a shared faith and morals,” the couple tells us.
They chose to get married at Manor by the Lake in Cheltenham which was Arjun’s choice. “The appeal was the stunning grounds, the fact that the venue offered exclusive use and that our family could stay over,” he says.
SETTING THE SCENE
The couple chose a black, white and silver colour theme to decorate their day. “We had black drapes on the chairs, beaded charger plates on the tables and our welcome sign and table plan were made using a silver mirror with white writing which was all in keeping with our theme,” Leah tells us. “Our beautiful centrepieces were floating candles with white roses and hydrangeas arranged in high and low-level vases which complemented my white rose bouquet and the bridesmaids’ posies of hydrangeas,” Leah says. “We also had white rose petals scattered down the aisle with white cherry blossom trees placed close to our top table and our place names featured hand-written calligraphy which matched our table numbers and biblical verse that we presented on each table.”
Leah and Arjun’s statement cake was a white three-tier design decorated with white wafer kites and silver leaf detail. “The flavours were red velvet; prosecco and passionfruit and blueberry and lemon,” they tell us. “We also gifted individual Victoria sponge and lemon drizzle cupcakes as favours.”
Leah and Arjun had an English menu for their wedding breakfast that was prepared by the team at the venue and an Indian menu produced by an outside catering company which provided an excellent variety of dishes for their guests.
LOOKING THE PART
Leach wore the dress by Vera Wang Bride called Laurence. “I had custom tulle sleeves added that were made by a seamstress,” she tells us. I teamed my dress with a pair of halo drop earrings and a heart-shaped necklace from Pandora which was one of the first gifts that Arjun gave to me. “I kept my look simple and elegant which is what made me feel confident, it felt suited to my personal style.”

Arjun wore a black embellished Serwani (which is a traditional Indian outfit for the groom) with a matching scarf, a pair of embroidered shoes and black beads. “Black isn’t necessarily a traditional wedding colour so he stood out from the rest of the male bridal party in it, and as the only person wearing Indian attire,” Leah tells us. “The groomsmen wore stylish two-piece grey suits teamed with black ties and shoes, and a white rose buttonhole which looked so smart. Our best man opted for a light-grey check suit.”
The couple’s bridesmaids wore charcoal grey dresses that they styled how they liked. “My maid-of-honour chose a silvery grey coloured gown in the same style and they all look beautiful,” Leah tells us.
TIME TO CELEBRATE
Leah and Arjun chose up-lighting to create a romantic ambience throughout the wedding breakfast and reception and provided activity bags to keep the children happy during the speeches. “The best man’s speech that was delivered by my brother, Aman, was amazing,” Arjun tells us. “We only had one speech which was incredible! We both felt elated and euphoric on the big day and everything came together.”

VINTAGE VIBES
Professional and experienced wedding planner Melanie Jane from Melanie Jane Weddings & Events covering the Cotswolds collaborated on the styled shoot featured on page 43. When it comes to new trends popping up at wedding celebrations this year, she tells us, “Audio guestbooks seem to have become a real hit for weddings this summer. Not only do they look great, with different styles ranging from vintage telephones to retro phone boxes, they offer an excellent alternative to a traditional guest book, allowing you to hear the emotion in your guest’s messages which you can then cherish forever. Such a simple but very effective addition to the day!

FUN FAMILY-MOON
We want to enjoy a family-moon in Gloucestershire, where can you suggest visiting?
Meet the experts: Birdland & Jurassic Journey based in Gloucestershire in Bourton-on-the-Water was one of the first bird encounters to open in the UK and provides a fun day out for all. It’s home to one of the largest collections of exotic birds in the UK including flamingos and pelicans.
What better time to visit Birdland & Jurassic Journey than now to meet the World’s Most Popular Penguin? The Gloucestershire attraction is home to England’s only colony of king penguins and they are the only breeding group left in the UK. Spike, the famous 15-year-old resident King Penguin, has earned the crown after winning a global competition run by Penguins International. There’s also Seth (the oldest male king penguin in Europe) along with Frank, Maggie, Lily and Bill.
Head keeper Alistair Keen said: “At Birdland, we are part of the European Endangered Species Programmes and I sit on the King Penguin Committee. We are committed to increasing the numbers and health of the endangered avian species.” He added, “The kings – which are the world’s second-largest species after Emperors – have been enjoying their new enclosure Penguin Shore since last summer when it reopened after an extensive redesign and renovation.”
There are daily keeper talks on penguins at Birdland and feeding displays take place at 11 am and 2.30 pm when visitors can find out more about the individual personalities of the penguins and how couples will often pair up for life.

Meet the expert: Jessica Rose is a make-up artist based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. She created the beautiful look for the model Esme in our cool and contemporary styled shoot this issue that took place at the new wedding venue The Lakes by Yoo which is revealed on page 51. Here, she tells us how to recreate it.
Jessica says: Brides that book me for an intimate, luxury wedding will generally ask for a modern, minimal and relaxed look. It still needs to stand out in the photographs though, so for this look, I created a matte eye in neutral tones with no shimmer and for this, I used the NYX warm neutrals eyeshadow palette. I kept the definition close to the lash line by applying a good amount of black eyeliner on the upper lid, then pressed a warm matte brown eye shadow over the top to soften the line, and added individual lashes for a subtle, natural look. My secret weapon against crying is NYX waterproof mascara – it has never let me or my brides down!
Longevity is the most important thing for me when it comes to choosing products (after checking that they’re cruelty-free) so I used Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation which I know is a great long-lasting foundation and photographs beautifully.
To finish the make-up look, I added a soft matte lip cream in a barely-there beige tone. The finishing touch was the soft wavy hairstyle, I brushed it through and left it loose.

CELEBRITY STYLE
How can I achieve the make-up that television personality Jamie Laing's new wife Sophie Habboo wore on her big day?
Meet the expert: Emma Beavers is a bridal and occasion make-up artist based in Wiltshire covering the South West.
Emma says: Sophie Habboo’s wedding make-up was the perfect bridal look, flawless yet still appearing like herself, just a more enhanced version. With wedding season in full swing, I know this will be the image of the year that brides use as their inspiration, so how do you achieve it?
There's a widespread misconception between natural makeup and neutral make-up. The difference is that natural make-up is where very little is applied to the skin so that the skin shines through and everything else on the face is minimal. Neutral make-up is generally full-coverage make-up where neutral colours are used to create a desired polished look.
Sophie's radiant make-up is a neutral make-up look and one that we can all create. Sophie built up her base by using two products, the first being a tinted moisturiser (try the DayWear Multi-Protection moisturiser with SPF15 by Estée Lauder) followed by a foundation (try the Double Wear Sheer Long-Wear Makeup by Estée Lauder). By layering these two products, you're hydrating, brightening and improving the appearance of the skin, while adding coverage.

We’re newly engaged and shopping for our engagement ring together. It needs to be sustainably sourced, can you help?
Meet the expert: Hannah Brown Jewellery is an award-winning, sustainably focused contemporary fine jewellery brand based in Wiltshire specialising in bespoke remodelled pieces to create sustainable, one-of-a-kind items.
Claire Ridley, Fashion editor across the County Wedding Magazines brand says: I adore the exquisite pieces created by Hannah who is open for commissions, perfect for engaged couples. Here is a selection of my favourite wedding-worthy pieces!
Hannah Brown Jewellery | https://hannahbrownjewellery.co.uk | www.facebook.com/hannahbrownjewellery | www.instagram.com/hannahbrownjewellery
For the eyes, soft pink tones were used across the lids, blending slightly up towards the brow bone and into the socket of the eye. This gives the eyelids a natural contour which is finished with a soft blend under the lower lash line and some black mascara.
Sophie softly contoured her cheeks, nose, forehead and jawline. The trick to this is not to go too dark with your chosen contour shade (you only need two to four shades darker than your skin tone). You want to create soft subtle shadows, not lines. This can be finished off with a touch of highlighter blush.
Brows can make or break a look! Sophie has groomed brows and this is a must for any bride. They are gently filled in for definition and brushed through.
Sophie's lips are slightly overlined to give her a fuller-looking lip, you can finish this off with sheer lipstick or a tinted lip balm.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN
I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.
Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

SKIN DEEP
Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great
The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.
Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.
possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.
Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.
What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?
This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.
I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.
People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?
I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.
We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where
What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.
Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or
“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.
A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.
Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.
What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?
I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.
The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.
It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right
ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.
When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?
It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.
What products couldn’t you live without?
I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

INTERVIEW 77
WhenI met with celebrity hairstylist and OGX ambassador, Michael Douglas to mark the launch of OGX’s new Colour Retention range, I can say with confidence that I was definitely having colour retention problems. I’d recently taken the plunge with my dream pastel violet hair colour, but my beloved shade was quickly running away from me. Michael very kindly offered to top my colour up, and while he mixed together a stunning new violet for me, I asked him about OGX’s new range. “All of the brand’s products are PH-balanced with sulphate-free surfactants, which don’t bind to anything you don’t want them to meaning they’re all very gentle on colour,” he told me.
I’m sure we can all agree that there’s not much better than that fresh-from-the-salon feeling, which is why OGX created the new collection, to extend salon or at home colour for up to four weeks. The new products also contain a colour bond plex technology, which helps to protect and strengthen strands for healthylooking, vibrant hair.
With the gorgeous colour applied, Michael began to style my short crop and I was curious whether he had any advice for brides-to-be thinking about colouring their locks pre-

wedding. He said, “It’s so high risk isn’t it? Do not do anything experimental, that’s the main thing! A lot of people seem to want to look like someone else on their wedding day, but I always think it’s better to look like the best, sexiest version of you – make you look great that day!
“Unless you wear your hair up a lot though, I never think it’s such a good idea. Remember, photos are forever. My favourite look was when Jennifer Aniston married Brad Pitt. She had great hair, everyone knew her for her that. So, actually she just had it down with some little diamonds sewn into it on a thin thread, which pinned it really nicely. I’ve tried the technique myself with a thin fishing wire woven through the hair before a blow dry and it just supports the style beautifully.”
Michael continued, “I also like the idea of doing something for the day and changing it up for the evening.” I was totally on board with this, having noticed an increasing trend in brides pulling off an outfit switch-up between the ‘I dos’ and celebrations. Michael suggested: “There‘s something nice about having the hair scraped back for the morning and then something a wavy in the evening or vice versa.”
By now, I was delighted with my own hair and wanted to know more about achieving the same look at home. After all, we can’t all have a celebrity hair stylist on call! He said, “A lot of people want frizz-free shiny hair and ask me on Instagram what shampoo and conditioner they need to buy, but it’s actually down to styling technique. Use a decent bristle brush with a metal barrel, hold the dryer at a particular angle for a long time, about four seconds longer than you think you need to, and keep the brush moving. Most of the answers to hair
So, how did you come to work with OGX as it’s brand ambassador? I asked. “During lockdown when all the hairdressers shut down, I decided to go on social media and talk about the best consumer products to use at home. I was getting around 4,000 people a day watching the lives, so a lot of brands got in touch asking me to talk about their products and OGX offered to send me some of its range. When I realised that most of my audience aren’t going to be spending £20 on a bottle of shampoo, yet were the very people asking for help, I agreed to try them. When I saw the huge range of products all PH balanced and with sulphate-free surfactants, at £6.99-£7.99 a bottle, it peaked my interest. I was able to send hundreds of OGX goodies out to my followers, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of people who came back to me saying how much they loved them. We shot 45 one-minute videos for OGX looking at common hair problems with the products to solve them. It’s a great match!”
I left the studio with a spring in my step confirming that indeed, it is difficult to beat the feeling of a fresh new do!

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day
Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...
What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?
The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.
Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.
Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.
The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.
What are the latest watch trends?
Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.
Smart watches are continuing to be a big
trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals. There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.
How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?
A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.
Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?
The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.
When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?
Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.
If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.
Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.
How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?
Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,
keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.
How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.
The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.
If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.
There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.
Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

Riverside romance
TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.
Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.
The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.
I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.
The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!
After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the
Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.
We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.
Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.
The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.
After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.
My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.
New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.
If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.

HONEYMOON NEWS 85
OF LOVEThe city
Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.
FIT FOR ROYALTY
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.
If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.
SUITE DREAMS
Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.
One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.
EAST MEETS WEST
There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.
With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.
Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.
TRUE ROMANCE
With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.
When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.
After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving. I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
86
For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.
Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.
SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED
Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.
DRINK IT ALL IN
After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!
Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!
A FOND FAREWELL
After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.
When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 87
HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for
the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners
I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.
AN IDYLLIC RETREAT
Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.
Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and
the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.
Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.
I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.
TIME TO DINE
It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.
Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

Kelly Andrews headed to
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!
It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.
PERFECTLY PAMPERED
On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.
There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.
BON APPETIT
By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of
SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.
Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!
The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.
