Spring fever

Hellolovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding!

Spring is finally here, and I couldn’t be more thrilled! After being cooped up indoors trying to stay warm, I can’t wait to venture outdoors and embrace more sunshine. The time of year is all about getting organised and new beginnings, which is perfect if you’re trying to plan your wedding. Spring nuptials are always a fabulous season to tie the knot with more seasonal produce, fun colour palettes, plenty of natural lighting for photographs and more flowers to pick from. Gardens will be in full bloom, meaning you’ll naturally have dreamworthy backdrops to take advantage of – cherry blossoms are my favourite way to add the wow factor to stunning images. We’ve handselected stunning al fresco venues with glorious gardens to give you a head start on wedding planning!

Ensure you have a backup plan if you want to exchange vows outdoors, as the British weather can be unpredictable. A marquee or indoor space will provide loved ones with cover in case of any April showers. Photographers can capture stunning images no matter the weather, so embrace the rain with a funky pair of wellies and an umbrella for the ultimate photo shoot. Keep in mind any national holidays or events, such as Mother’s Day or school holidays, as many people will be making plans in advance. Before you go, check out our stunning weddings and shoots that are bursting full of inspiration. Here you’ll find talented companies, stunning images and wow-factor details.

That’s all from me; happy planning!

What’s not to love about this gown with delicate lace and a beautiful silhouette?

SPOTLIGHT ON BUCKHURST PHOTOGRAPHY

Here at YHBW HQ, we’ve caught up with Georgina Bedford at Buckhurst Photography to discover more about the talented company. Here’s what Georgina has to say…

When did you start photographing weddings?

I have been photographing weddings for around three years and have only recently decided to take it up professionally. Previously, I have focused on portrait photography but have found a new passion for capturing weddings. I started the company during the Covid lockdowns to live life to the fullest and fulfil my passion for photography – I haven’t looked back since.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR

Located in Hertfordshire, Charlotte White Bridal is excited to announce she has been entered into The Wedding Industry Awards for 2024.

Owner Charlotte White travels nationwide, creating beautiful and stylish hairstyles for all ages. She works hard to ensure clients look amazing and feel confident – ready for the most important walk to married life.

Finding the perfect wedding hairstyle can be stressful with so many options available. That’s why Charlotte is there to help guide you through the experience and discuss different styles. She’ll share advice on what works well with the season, the dress’s neckline and the wedding theme. After working in the wedding industry for 15 years, she is an expert! She says, “My top tip is to opt for a hair trial! Wear white to understand how your hairstyle will complement your wedding dress. Make the most of your hair trial by going out afterwards or trying dresses on to see how the style lasts throughout the day.”

Please visit her website for more information on Charlotte or to book your 2024 wedding.

Check out: www.charlottewhitebridal.co.uk

I offer an array of wedding packages, from the Bronze Package starting at £400 right the way up to the Platinum Package costing £1,400.

What’s your photography style?

I prefer capturing natural shots over posed images, as I love capturing moments as they happen. The key for me is making couples feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera so they can enjoy the day.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is using my creative ideas to capture images that will encapsulate a feeling, moment or emotion for my clients. I also love the editing process and seeing the images transform into the final piece I envisaged.

She says, “It was probably around 10.15 pm when I got the news from my friend DJ Mike Readings, who won National Highly Commended DJ, and I was blown away!” She continues, “I’d like to say a huge thank you to all of my couples that spent the time voting for me and rating my business for judges to deem me highly commended nationwide. THYME OF OUR LIVES

Richard and Catherine had an outdoor wedding surrounded by nature and herbs

Images courtesy of Sharron Gibson Photographer

26

Richard and Catherine met at university, where they were training to become actors. The pair reconnected a few years after graduation as they had lost contact, but this time saw each other in a new light. It took a while to build up the courage to admit their feelings as they didn’t want to lose their friendship if the feelings weren’t reciprocated. It was no surprise to their mutual friends when they finally took that next step; it was the start of something special.

The couple had escaped to Cornwall for a week just before Christmas to attend a wedding, so love and marriage were indeed in their thoughts! They walked down to a secluded beach that Catherine had known since she was a little girl and admired the sea views when Richard got down on one knee. He says, “We both knew we wanted to get married at some stage, but it still came as a surprise for Catherine! The pebbles were slightly uncomfortable, but it was worth it!”

SETTING THE SCENE

As the lovebirds were coming out of a Covid-19 lockdown when they started wedding planning, they knew they wanted a big party with as many loved ones as possible. They exchanged vows in the beautiful Hertford Baptist Church before heading to their reception at Brook Farm Cuffley.

The venue created the perfect backdrop to their reception, thanks to the beautiful lake and gorgeous surroundings. Richard comments, “We loved being outdoors and so close to nature, which inspired us when planning the big day. We loved the freedom of tailoring every decision to reflect who we are as a couple.”

During the lockdown, the nearlyweds got into growing their own herbs, which became the inspiration for the wedding décor. They wanted the favours to be something people could use, so they gave out little pots of mixed herbs and strawberry jam.

When planning the table plan, the pair found it easy to group guests on big round tables. To help everyone find their seats, they created a gardening scene for the table plan on a hessian board plonked onto a wheelbarrow and covered in flowers. Each table was named after a location special to the pair and had a corresponding piece to match. For example, the ‘Strawberry Field’ table featured a punnet of strawberries, while the Cornwall table included some clotted cream fudge – all these things made great talking points for the guests.

The couple used mixed herb pots, which the bride’s mother helped arrange to carry on the herb theme. Some guests were lucky enough to take them home.

The stunning flowers were sourced and arranged by the wonderful Alison McCollum, and the blooms were exactly how the couple imagined. The deep reds worked well against the sage green colours. The flowers for the ceremony were arranged by members of the church congregation, who also worked extremely hard to get everything right. After the wedding, the bride’s mum divided up the arrangements and gave a bunch of flowers to various members of the church community. The guests knew how much of a sweet tooth the couple had, so they were excited to see the cake. Catherine says, “I love icing, so there was no chance of a naked-style cake. We had a real showstopper with lemon, vanilla and orange flavours. The baker supplied us with a gluten-free chocolate cake for those with dietary requirements.”

The couple displayed 300 pictures of loved ones around the marquee, which was a massive hit with guests. They included photos from their weddings, which was a great way to make them feel included.

It can be hard to cater for different tastes when it comes to keeping guests from going hungry. The bride comments, “We tried to have a good mixture of options for the food without forcing ideas or beliefs onto anyone. Kingfisher Caterers were great with this; the food was plentiful and delicious.” She adds, “In the evening, we provided a

REAL WEDDINGS 27

buffet with huge charcuterie boards so that everyone could pick what they wanted.” There was also some locally sourced bread from a local bakery, Proto Artisan Bakery in Ware and Richard’s parents bought a delicious cheese from The Mousetrap Cheese Shop in Ludlow.

LOOKING THE PART

Finding the perfect gown was challenging for Catherine, who had to shop around during a Covid lockdown and couldn’t try anything on. She says, “I found my dress at Adore Brides, and the team were so helpful in letting me take it home to try on. I tend to have a flare for the dramatic style, so I went with the longest veil I could find with a princess tiara.”

As the dress was quite long at the back, so the bride changed in the evening into something she could dance the night away in. Her bridesmaid Alice found the perfect dress from Halston, who was famous for his 70s styles.

Richard wore a sage green tweed suit with a burgundy tie, brown brogues, a brown belt and burgundy socks. The groom comments, “We didn’t request the groomsmen to wear a particular colour, so they could wear any suit that matched the burgundy tie we had bought for them.” Catherine had been a bridesmaid seven times before, so she knew what wearing many different styles and colours was like. She wanted the bridesmaids to feel comfortable and let them choose any outfit to match the colour scheme. One bridesmaid wore a lovely vintage-style dress, while the other opted for a chic-oversized suit and a high-neck blouse –they both looked great.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The lovebirds were thrilled to have booked the Tom Braggins Trio, a local band who regularly play in and around Hertford. As their first dance track faded, the band seamlessly carried on the song and went on with their set. Some of their guests stayed on the dancefloor the entire night, so they must have enjoyed the music! The trio played lots of funky dancefloor fillers, and a few people stood in awe as they appreciated how technically gifted they were as musicians.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The couple experienced many emotions as the day went on. Catherine says, “It’s hard not to feel a little apprehensive on the day as there’s a lot of pressure on the bride to look and be a certain way. I felt relieved that the hard work was over and excited to see everyone.”

Richard felt super excited in the morning and couldn’t wait to see his bride. He comments, “I was looking forward to seeing Catherine in her dress, and I couldn’t wait to make that commitment to each other to spend the rest of our lives together. I couldn’t believe it when I woke up to clear blue skies and bright sunshine in March!”

The lovebirds had a long ceremony full of readings, performances and even a video of themselves to show at the beginning. Different music styles were performed during the ceremony; the bride’s best friend Jo played the oboe, a family friend Mike performed a folk song and another family friend sang Misty by Ella Fitzgerald and led the worship band. Richard says, “We were taken aback when so many of our guests told us that the speeches were some of the best they had ever heard at a wedding. A huge thanks to my father-in-law and my best man, Sam, who made us all gasp in shock at times and roar with laughter throughout.”

So many guests and suppliers made Richard and Catherine’s wedding extra special. Catherine says, “Our parents were a great support, and we had an army of people at Hertford Baptist Church who gave up their time to assist us with the ceremony. Our photographer Sharron did an incredible job with the pictures, and our friend Sean did a lovely video. I must thank my bridesmaids for stepping up during the whole wedding week, from last-minute shopping trips to bossing around my brothers and painting picture frames.”

HONEYMOON

The couple wanted sun, sand, clear waters and plenty of cocktails for their honeymoon. What better way to escape the British weather than a honeymoon to Mexico for 10 days? Richard says, “We didn’t want the hassle of organising the trip ourselves, so we employed the help of a family friend who works for Travel Counsellors – she was amazing and sorted everything out for us!” He continues, “It was an incredible getaway where we swam, snorkelled and saw the ancient Mayan ruins.”

Pretty in pink

Sophie and Alex’s stunning wedding at Offley Place featured plenty of local suppliers Images courtesy of Nikki Watkins Photo & Film

33 REAL
WEDDINGS

Sophie

and Alex first met at school and dated during their teens before going their separate ways. Alex went to study in Hong Kong after taking a year abroad towards his studying to become an engineer at the University of Bristol, and Sophie lived in Spain after studying history and politics at the University of Leicester. Throughout the years, they vaguely stayed in touch before moving back to Hitchin and bumping into each other while commuting to London one day. They reconnected as friends and decided to date again.

Alex proposed in Scotland on a road trip through Skye. The pair were staying on a secluded beach in an eco-lodge and went for a walk at sunset when Alex popped the question. Sophie says, “It was a total surprise – so much so that I didn’t say anything for a few minutes while I took it all in. Alex had started acting slightly odd ten minutes before, which made me think something may be about to happen.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple set the date for October 10th 2022, and set out to use as many local suppliers as possible to support small businesses. Their number one goal was to avoid adding any extra pressure because as long as they were together with loved ones, that was all that mattered.

When finding the backdrop to their day, the lovebirds wanted a property close to home where guests could feel comfortable and enjoy the day. After viewing several venues, they discovered Offley Place and fell in love. The bride says, “It was everything I wanted when I imagined myself getting married; it looked grand but still intimate. We knew the grounds would look spectacular in Autumn, especially the beautiful vines around the building, and there were plenty of rooms for our guests to stay over.”

The groom made his grand entrance in a red Austin 7 vintage car, which made the perfect backdrop to photos during the day. The newlyweds went for a drive after the ceremony, which was the ideal opportunity to spend time together and reflect on their vows as they drove around the block.

The couple had framed wedding photos from their loved ones’ weddings inside the property, a lovely personal touch that was a huge hit with guests. They also had a pick ‘n’ mix table, flip flops in a basket for guests, sparklers before the firework display and an LED sparkle dancefloor that came with ‘Mr & Mrs Coles’ light-up letters.

The table plan was displayed on a giant map, usually found in the pair’s house, and pins indicated all the places they had travelled or lived. Table names were displayed in gold frames with an image of the couple at that location. Alex has a blog from his travels, and the pair used snippets on the back of the frames that people could read and a link for them to view the whole post. They also had QR codes on the tables, which linked to a shared Google image folder for loved ones to upload their snaps from the day – some of the photos are incredible!

Alternating tower stands and short vases with flowers inside comprised the centrepieces, which matched the colour scheme perfectly. The bride wanted the tall golden stands to be full of flowers and absolutely loved the final result. The flowers were mainly white and light pink with eucalyptus greenery around the edges. The pair enlisted the help of a local florist, Ellice from Willow & Blossom Floral Design, who made their dream vision come true. Sophie says, “I cried when Ellice first dropped off the flowers as it was the first time I saw everything coming together –they were just so beautiful!”

Guests were given ceramic pots for favours with tea lights inside, matching the day’s intimate and relaxed vibe. The pair now love visiting guests and seeing the pots on display.

The confetti used on the day was homegrown by a family friend, who cut and dried litres of confetti. The personal touch meant a lot to the lovebirds; they still have some leftovers to keep forever.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride unintentionally fell in love with an off-the-rack dress after thinking she had already found the one. She says, “I was adamant I wasn’t wearing a sleeveless dress, and I knew I wanted something really classic that I would be comfortable in. I took my cousin, mum and aunt dressing shopping for a bit of fun and to try on some dresses in different styles. I picked a white Mikado gown because I just felt like me – plus I loved the pockets and huge train.” Sophie wore

34

pearl earrings, a necklace and a bracelet from loved ones to accessorise her look. Later in the evening, she swapped into a diamanté necklace, her grandmother’s sapphire ring and a bracelet Alex had gifted her on the morning of the wedding. Silk flats finished off her look with a bit of bling around the edges. The bride comments, “I felt happy and comfortable with my look. I had this odd moment where my bridesmaids and mum were all out of the room getting ready, and I was standing alone in my dress. I remember feeling completely at ease, which is all I could have asked for.”

The bridesmaids wore beautiful off-the-shoulder chiffon dresses with beautiful details on the back with buttons and ribbon.

Alex wore a morning suit hired from HRH Holmes & Son Ltd in Hitchin. He had a different waistcoat from the groomsmen to stand out; he wore blue while the others had grey. The company shared plenty of advice with the pair and were fantastic throughout the process – they even sorted last-minute alterations.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The pair hired a DJ and saxophonist to help keep guests entertained in the evening; they were great and really got the party started. The bride says, “The team nailed the playlist! It’s hard to entertain loads of 30-year-olds and 60-yearolds, but they did a great job of catering to all.”

The pair both felt at ease and really happy during the day. Sophie says, “During the ceremony, I felt a bit like a dear in headlights as everything happened so quickly – we couldn’t remember afterwards what we’d even said! We took moments to sit back and enjoy it together during the day, which we’re grateful for. I remember desperately wanting to remember every moment and detail by trying to be as present as possible.”

The couple had rehearsed their first dance and set up fireworks as a surprise for all of the guests, and they felt more relaxed after this had taken place.

Seeing all their guest together was so special for Sophie and Alex. The bride says, “After spending months trying to plan and visualise the day, seeing it all come together in front of you is a great feeling and a bit surreal! We also had so many happy guests – lots of love and happiness all day.” She continues, “One thing that stood out was the staff at Offley Place. Our on-the-day coordinator, Angela, was absolutely incredible and was there before you needed her every time. She covered everything and made us feel so at ease – the whole team were outstanding, and we couldn’t have asked for more. We felt as though everyone really cared about our day, and they were so happy to help.”

The couple’s parents and the wedding party helped the day come together –the pair will forever be grateful to everyone involved. The fantastic photographer and videographer Nikki and Kane Watkins are wedding experts! They were excellent at directing guests to ensure everyone was in the right place and at the right time while making the pair feel relaxed in front of the camera. They knew the venue and the timings to the minute – a benefit of using local suppliers! The team helped the lovebirds envision the day before it happened and captured the most incredible shots that the newlyweds will treasure forever, including excelling at the almost impossible task of surprise firework photos!

Most guests commented on one hilarious moment: how the flowergirl dropped a wedding ring during the vows. After the unmistakable ‘ding’ as the ring hit the floor, the whole room erupted into laughter – thankfully, the piece was located and it helped everyone relax while setting the tone for day!

Check out this modern shoot at Rothamsted Manor in Hertfordshire Images courtesy of Shrigley Photography & Film

Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside is the stunning Rothamsted Manor, a hidden gem set in acres of woodland with beautifully manicured walled gardens. The venue provides the perfect wedding setting, and the talented chefs create delicious, locally sourced menus. Angela Hodson at Angela Jane Cake Design and Louise Shrigley at Shrigley Photography and Film aspired to showcase the Manor as well as local suppliers as part of a modern-styled shoot. They opted for a green and white colour scheme with hints of blush, blue and gold.

Décor was kept minimal in the ceremony room to showcase the listed features, with blush pink touches and candles. Green and white blooms comprised the bouquet and the floral arrangements in the Great Hall, where tall centrepieces and candles embraced the impressive space. The stationery featured an embossed image of the venue, and the place settings incorporated the colour palette perfectly.

The all-white elegant wedding cake with clear acrylic tiers and handmade sugar flowers looked stunning, as did the biscuit favours with edible gold accents.

The female model wore a full-length beaded gown before changing into a mini dress with an oversized bow to start the party! The male model wore a light blue three-piece lounge suit before changing into black tie attire for the evening.

AS THE

night falls

This romantic-styled shoot was captured during twilight and is full of striking shots

Images courtesy of Helen-Jane Photography

Shoot coordinator Melanie Rich at Enchanted Bridal Boutique pulled together a fantastic team of suppliers to create this twilight shoot, which featured a burgundy and purple colour scheme.

The Manor of Groves Hotel is a stunning Georgian property surrounded by beautiful countryside –it was the perfect backdrop to the shoot.

The female models wore classic Mikado dresses from The House of Nicholas, which were elegant and perfectly accompanied the night-time mood. The brief was sultry with a touch of drama for the hair and make-up by Laura Cartwright. Meanwhile, the male model looked relaxed in his casual suit – the perfect charmer.

Helen Adams at Helen-Jane Photography used misty fading light with various techniques, including smoke bombs, to capture amazing eye-catching shots.

The florals on the day were stunning. Iulia Blooms blended the floral colour theme to incorporate texture and movement to complement the seasonal varieties. While the beautiful white blossom arch from Décor and Blooms offered the perfect backdrop to images, as did the very popular VW Campervan from Lucky Penny Weddings!

BAKE OFF

Discover more about the amazing bakers behind these big-day cakes

Wedding cakes are a staple at every wedding and allow couples to get creative to bring their dream vision to life while incorporating their theme and colour scheme. So, finding a company that believes in your vision and has plenty of experience is essential. They should be able to take your ideas and use their expertise to create something magical. To help you find the perfect fit, we’ve gathered incredible bakers to share all about their lovely businesses.

ANGELA HODSON AT ANGELA JANE CAKE DESIGN

When did your passion for baking start?

I have always loved to bake for family and friends! After leaving a long and successful corporate career, I followed my passion for art and design for everything edible – I’ve never looked back!

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I’m celebrating five years in the wedding industry; it has been a wonderful creative journey. I’ve continued developing my cake designs and flower crafting skills to produce edible centrepieces for my couples while offering my knowledge, expertise and guidance to creating their dream wedding cake.

What’s trending in the world of wedding cakes?

I have seen a rise in cake favours, hand-painted designs, wafer paper, sugar flowers and texture. Many couples opt for sugar flowers for a more sustainable and gorgeous keepsake. You’ll benefit from a wider choice of varieties and colours – not bound by seasonal availability. There’s an increase in tall and slim-tiered cakes, which offers a sense of grandeur even with an intimate wedding by using one or two tall tiers.

What is your favourite part of the job?

HELEN HORTON AT HELEN’S HOMEMADE CAKERY

When did your passion for baking start?

My passion for baking started in my nan’s kitchen! She taught me how to bake everything, and I still use some of her recipes today – especially for jams and curds. After she passed away when I was 25, I took over baking for all the family’s occasion cakes.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

The company has been running for more than six years! I offer tiered cakes, cupcakes, mini-individual cakes as well as iced biscuits for favours and place settings. I create a few designs after a free consultation with couples over the phone or via Zoom. Lovebirds can then order cake samples to enjoy at home to help decide on the flavours.

What’s trending in the world of wedding cakes?

This year’s biggest cake trend is big, bold and unusual bakes! Couples are being much more creative with their weddings, and some opt for separated or floating tiers with different textures and colours.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is creating all the finer details, like sugar or wafer paper flowers. I get lost for hours making all the petals and leaves. It’s also the first time I the your design coming to life.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

Bakers are getting booked for peak wedding season, sometimes nine months in advance. So even if you can’t decide on the final design of your cake, you need to have at least the date booked with your preferred baker after the tasting and initial consultation.

What cake would you design for your own wedding?

I would definitely have a square cake with a mixture of acrylic and metal tier separators to give the bake some extra height. I would choose a traditional white fondant with a blue and purple marble or a watercolour effect before decorating it with wafer paper and isomalt sails.

Check out: www.helenshomemadecakery.co.uk

My favourite part is working with my clients to create their dream design and delivering the final illustration in delicious cake form! I often see bridal parties when I’m setting up; it’s a thrill to see and hear their reactions.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples? Contact your favourite designer as soon as possible because we get booked so far in advance – it’s best to secure your spot.

What cake would you design for your own wedding?

If my husband and I got married again, I would love to create a slim and tall cake with fabulous unstructured sugar flowers, some wafer paper elements, textured tiers and edible gold leaf accents.

MARCIA BAIRSTOW AT MARCIA’S WEDDING CAKES

When did your passion for baking start?

I have always loved baking for family and friends. I wanted a new path to follow when I retired from my teaching career, which would allow me to engage with people and share my love of creating.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I have been making cakes for the past eight years and endeavour to provide my clients with delicious bakes at reasonable costs.

What’s trending in the world of wedding cakes?

Larger cakes are now possible after a few years with only a few guests. This year, we’re creating a cake with a lace design and floral style.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Meeting lovely clients and learning a little about them and their lives is a highlight. It’s a lovely feeling to know that the cake you have made really helps to make their day special.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

Your cake is the wedding’s centrepiece, so it must reflect your thoughts and ideas.

What cake would you design for your own wedding?

My dream cake would have a vintage style, with lace patterns, pearls, beautiful flowers and a romantic style.

DANNICA ROSE AT ROSE CAKE DESIGN

When did your passion for baking start?

My passion for baking started at a very young age. I was always in the kitchen making something, and my dad always enjoyed sampling the results.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

My company has been trading for around six years now. I love offering nearlyweds a personalised and creative service. After discussing designs with couples, I work hard to bring their ideas to life as each cake is made with such love and passion!

What’s trending in the world of wedding cakes?

I’d say there’s a big focus on bakes that incorporate separators and spacer stands, which really helps to create an elongated and dramatic look.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part of the job is seeing the finished product! I love arriving at a venue to assemble a cake and seeing the finished creation.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

My one piece of advice would be to do what you want! Too often, wedding planning can become all about loved ones and keeping the peace. You can forget the little details you’ve always dreamed of – so make decisions for yourself.

What cake would you design for your own wedding?

My dream wedding cake would be four or five tiers high, with the bottom tier being a hexagon shape and the remaining tiers showing off different heights and textures with handmade sugar flowers!

STACEY BADGER AT THE MAD BATTER’S BAKED GOODS

When did your passion for baking start?

I used to bake with my grandmother when I was younger, who later gave me my first cake mixer. I am gluten-free, and it’s essential that free-from cakes taste as good as classic bakes. When I wanted to explore this, I also wanted to be able to cater for other dietary requirements as well.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

The company is six years old, and our wedding offerings have entirely changed. We offer something for everyone while catering for nearly all dietary requirements, and the price doesn’t change just because you need it to be free from. We also offer phone consultations and wedding cake tasters.

What’s trending in the world of wedding cakes?

Lambeth cakes are a huge 2023 trend as well as pressed florals, individual cakes on each table and separated tiers. Dessert tables also seem to be a trend that’s here to stay with doughnut walls, brownie stacks or an assortment of items.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I love the consultation process, hearing exactly what couples are looking for and being able to bring that to life. From writing ideas down on paper to displaying the cake at the venue and seeing photographers capture the moment couples see the bake is priceless.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

Remember that it’s your wedding. Don’t get caught up in what we should do or what we could do for anyone else.

What cake would you design for your own wedding?

I was lucky enough to create my wedding cake in November 2022! We had a combination of a wedding cake and a dessert table. I used gold leaves and textures on each tier with sharp buttercream edges. We filled a perspex tier with succulents to bring all those elements together. Of course, everything was gluten-free!

JANNIE TURNBULL AT JENNIE’S CAKES & CATERING

When did your passion for baking start?

I have always baked since I can remember and loved baking goodies for people at work. I’ve also always made my little girl’s birthday cakes since she was born. I decided to do something different on her 4th birthday and discovered fondant; this was a game-changer for me! I decided to take the plunge and turned my passion into a business.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

The company has been running for 12 years. I not only do wedding cakes and favours but also offer a range of catering options, including afternoon teas and hog roasts.

What’s trending in the world of wedding cakes?

Semi-naked cakes are still a massive hit, probably half of my wedding orders, but I love it when couples also want something different. What is your favourite part of the job?

It’s the fact that I am self-employed and I can run my own schedule. Creating cakes and seeing the final product is also fantastic, especially when I see how happy my creations make others.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples? Enjoy the wedding process, and don’t stress about the little things as no one will remember or probably even notice if something goes wrong. Your day will go quickly; you’ll want to take it all in.

What cake would you design for your own wedding?

I would want a semi-naked mini cake with fruits and then a massive tower of brownies, doughnuts and cake slices to have a bit of everything.

BOOST YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN

Raising the bar, St.Tropez’s new Self Tan Luxe Body Serum infused with a unique collagen-enhancing complex, responds to consumer demand for a hydrating, longer-lasting natural glow with skincare benefits. It works to firm, smooth, soothe, reduce redness and even skin tone while instantly hydrating skin in the most easy-to-use format yet. What’s more, it’s infused with the iconic St.Tropez Luxe scent, a fine fragrance with Tritech Olfactory Fragrance Technology, which equals no biscuity smell.

Having learned of its zero transfer attribute I asked Michaella Bolder, St.Tropez tanning and skincare expert, whether she’d recommend this particular product to brides, and if so when would be the best time to apply. She told me, “Yes, it’s a beautiful tan for brides. However, I’d always recommend to apply tan the day before. This way, you can be prepped and make sure you apply evenly without any worries or concerns on the morning of your wedding. It is zero transfer but as the tan starts to take, you want to make sure you’re super-confident, as it comes through over four to eight hours. So, always apply the day, evening or 24 hours before your big day. It leaves you with a beautiful rich, medium glow and with the skin being so hydrated it just beams.”

£35, available at Boots, Superdrug, Look Fantastic, ASOS, Amazon and all leading online retailers.

DAWN ‘TIL DUSK

Left with a hole in my life when my previous primer ran out I was bereft. Until Milk’s Pore Eclipse Mattifying Primer landed on my desk that is. This lightweight water cream makeup primer with skincare benefits claims to blur pores and control shine for a long-lasting soft matte finish, and I can confirm it does just that. It feels fantastic to apply and leaves skin feeling satin smooth. After a long day visiting London recently my foundation looked as good when I arrived home as it did when I left. What’s more, it’s 90 per cent natural, clean, vegan, cruelty-free, noncomedogenic, paraben-free, and silicone-free. I’ve found a new favourite! £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk

OH-SO NATURAL

Founded in 1996, Ringana is a pioneering Austrian skincare company creating products so fresh it’s recommended they’re used within 10 weeks of opening. As well as using fantastic vegan formulations, the products also feature some of 2023’s most sought after active ingredients. I love the Tinted Moisturiser from the brand’s FRESH range, containing squalane. This olive-oil based ingredient is becoming increasingly popular because it helps to reconstitute our hydrolipidic film and is easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue behind. It works to strengthen the skin’s barrier and maintain hydration too. As a result, this gorgeous moisturiser creates a radiant, perfectly even complexion. Plus, the product covers the skin in a delicate tint, thanks to mineral pigments that adapt beautifully to its tone erasing small defects, redness and pigmentation spots. £40.80 (€46,90), www.ringana.com

ENCOUNTER THE ELEMENTS

This year sees perfume house Issey Miyake present two new fragrances: L’Eau d’Issey Pivonie (£68, 50ml) and L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme Vétiver (£59, 50ml). The two launches celebrate nature in all its beauty, starting with water, of course, but also ushering in lush, vibrant florals and the intensity of vetiver.

L’Eau d’Issey Pivoine is 87 per cent made up of ingredients of natural origin, while this proportion for L’Eau d’Issey pour Home Vétiver is even higher at 93 per cent. These ingredients are exclusively sourced in a manner that respects the principles of fair trade and are responsibly harvested.

The perfect duo for the perfect duo! Available exclusively at The Perfume Shop from 26th March, 2023.

IN NEED OF A BOOST?

Green mandarin essential oil is packed with antioxidants and is known for its rejuvenating and brightening properties. It leaves dull skin looking luminous and radiant, perfect for reviving your complexion and bringing a gorgeous glow to it. That’s why the clever folk at Decléor have harnessed its power to create its Green Mandarin Glowing Collection.

TRIED & TESTED

Having keenly followed celebs’ ravings about Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream on social media, excitement levels at CWM HQ were high when a tub arrived in the office. Editor Olivia Gibson stepped up to try it, here’s what she had to say:

“This cream smells unbelievable and absorbs quickly, leaving behind beautifully hydrated skin, and after the first use I noticed a smooth and refreshed feeling. Fast-forward a few weeks and my skin now appears firmer and tighter too.

This award-winning product is free from parabens, soy, artificial colours, phthalates, sulphates and mineral oils – it’s suitable for vegans and is crueltyfree too. With skin-loving ingredients including guaraná, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, açaí oil, Brazil nut and more – this cream is the ultimate body skincare product.” Find it at www.lookfantastic.com, £20

SHINE BRIGHT

I’ve fallen in particular for the Green Mandarin Aromaplastie Glow Booster Mask, which is designed to boost radiance and revitalise the complexion. A potent treatment that brightens and energises dull and tired-looking skin, offers the ideal pre-wedding boost. £37, www.facethefuture.co.uk

LUSCIOUS LASHES

LEGIT Lashes is Huda

Kattan’s debut mascara that’s been more than four years in the making. It features not one, but two full-size mascaras in one product. An innovative combo, it’s the ultimate multitasker helping to achieve the three pillars of luscious lashes – volume, length, and curl – in seconds. Each wand works effortlessly to give you the lashes you’re after, with both ends loaded with Huda’s signature extra black, Black-2 Liquid pigment. £24, https://hudabeauty.com

eSalon’s Silk Shine (£17) is a nourishing argan oil treatment that increases shine, strengthens hair and protects colour. Just a few small pumps (or one if you have short hair like me) gives hair an instantly radiant shine, while hydrating dry-to-the-touch ends and safeguarding against colour fade. It’s done wonders for the condition of my hair and a little does indeed go a long way.

eSalon is reinventing the way we colour our hair by creating a fully-customised professional-grade home hair colour that’s made to order and shipped directly to the door. Find out more at www.esalon.co.uk

SELF-CARE Soothing

Our Social Media Editor, Gracie Leader, immersed herself in the world of Reiki to find out if the form of meditation can help you remain calm in the lead up to your big day

66

It’sno understatement to say that planning your big day can cause your stress levels to shoot all the way up. Not only are you spending a great deal of time (and money) to ensure every little detail is perfect; it also represents a giant life change you are about to experience with your partner.

That’s why, in the lead up to your nuptials, practicing self-care is more important than ever. Whilst self-care can look different for everyone (exercising, eating healthily or reading) one form of mindfulness you may not have thought of before is reiki.

Reiki is best known as a form of Complementary Therapy that focuses on energy healing. It works with the energy fields around the body and involves the transfer of universal energy, to be channelled from the practitioner’s palms to your body.

The thought process behind Reiki is that every living thing and their surrounding atmosphere contains energy, and so this can be channelled in a way to rebalance energy.

For a person, this is within the body and mind to support both your physical and emotional wellbeing. The physical in terms of aches and pains, the emotional in terms of feelings of anxiety and stress.

There is scepticism that surrounds the practice of Reiki. But there is a reason the NHS supports and recommends it as a hospital service and even if you are not a fan of spirituality, there is evidence to suggest Reiki may be useful to help manage mental health conditions, particularly anxiety, stress and depression.

Of course, I couldn’t possibly recommend Reiki without indulging in the self-care practice myself. So, in February, after a hectic and busy start to the year I met with Reiki Master, Georgina Hemsley. Georgina has been practicing Reiki for over 11 years. A qualified therapist, Georgina owned her own salon for 3 years specialising in massage, Reiki and facial treatments and a focus on organic and natural skincare.

“Reiki supports our emotional and mental well-being in many different ways, and can be different for each person, each time, Georgina explained to me. “This is dependent on what a person may be experiencing at the time of receiving reiki or if they have come for a reiki session for a specific reason, for example, to help them, in advance, navigate the sometimes overwhelming process of getting married. We suggest a treatment per month in the run up to your big day so we can support you from the beginning and you can enjoy the entire process right up to when you say I do.”

After getting myself comfortable on the treatment bed, Georgina explained how my body might (or might not) react to the treatment. She told me that some people feel very hot, others feel extremely cold, and some describe seeing bright colours or flashes of light. Georgina warned me it can be an emotional process and to allow any or all feelings to bubble up.

Georgina began the session with some guided mediation including breathwork and manifestation. She asked me to clearly consider my intentions for the rest of 2023 and place them at the front of my mind.

Your intention are vital when practicing reiki. Georgina encouraged me to ask myself “what are my stresses? Is anything troubling me? What would I like to receive?” I learnt, the more direct you can be about your self-healing practice, the more the universe will hear you.

I then received a temple massage to release tension and promote relaxation. This absolutely eased me into the right mindset for the rest of the treatment and allowed me to drift into a world of calm.

For the rest of the hour Georgina got to work – doing what she does best – using a combination of crystals, sound baths, and gentle touches to my pressure points.

At the end of the session Georgina informed me she had spent time rebalancing my chakras – noting my throat chakra was particularly unbalanced. She explained I might feel a difference in the way I communicate in the next few days - wanting to stay quiet or be more vocal.

“During a treatment, I disassociate myself from the physical being of the client. I am an extension of their energy. A vessel if you will,” Georgina explains. “It is not unusual to pick up on their feelings or any pains they may be experiencing during the session. I allow myself to be intuitively guided to move my focus to the parts of the body that need work. I clear this energy and set an intention to balance and instil a sense of calm.”

Whilst everyone sees different results from reiki, I came away from my first treatment feeling relaxed, renewed and with a sense I was better prepared to tackle anything come my way.

I recommend going in with an open mind and allow yourself to fully immerse in the treatment. Although it can’t be guaranteed the treatment will work for everyone, giving yourself an hour to switch off and allow someone else take your worries into their hands, can never be a bad idea.

As Georgina explained to me, she can’t recommend reiki enough for brides-to-be planning their big day. “We all know whilst our wedding is a magical day, the build-up can be very stressful. Reiki healing can help guide you throughout the planning and preparation, reiki will work with you to give you exactly what you need, so you can be very specific on your intention and what you want to gain from the reiki healing,” Georgina explains. “This could be to receive more support from your friends and family, to conquer any last-minute hurdles that arise, to ease your nerves, or to support your energy to feel calm and relaxed throughout.”

Caring for yourself and practicing mindfulness doesn’t always have to be seeking out these treatments however. Not everyone has the time, or indeed money, to meet a reiki master regularly.

Instead, it is important to find what works for you and build it in to your daily routine. Taking elements of Reiki into your self-care routine in the run up to the big day will help you to feel more relaxed and calmer. Self-care for you could reading, journaling or completing your skincare routine.

As Georgina is also the founder of Hemsley Organics she knows the importance of a good skin care routine. “Our Organic skincare can give you a well-deserved serotonin boost and provides an opportunity for mindfulness. Having a morning or evening routine can make you feel happier, as it’s all about the ritual and putting time and energy into making yourself feel good,” she explains. “Implementing a ritual can deepen that sense of well-being and prompt you to take just a little time out for yourself each morning and evening.”

Georgina and her husband Joe created the Anahata Collection to combine Skincare and Reiki. Feel good products that work to balance the plant-based extractions from the manufacturing process. Allowing them to be in their purest state of energy, as nature intended, supercharging them with their natural energies to enhance the efficacy of their benefits and provide a more spiritual skincare experience. BAN THE BLOAT

Professional nutritionists Wedding Wellness explain how to avoid untimely bloating on your wedding day

One of the most common digestive complaints is bloating, an uncomfortable, sometimes heavy sensation that can follow after eating a meal that for some, also results in feeling tired, unable to concentrate and having a physically noticeable bloated tummy. Not symptoms you want to endure on any day, let alone on one as special as your wedding. There are many possible causes of bloating, some of which come with additional digestive complaints such as pain, constipation and flatulence – usually an indication of poor gut health. These symptoms are usually referred to as IBS by doctors, but may also be the result of intolerances, allergies or other gut disease. There are however some simple, everyday things you can consider to help reduce that after-meal bloat. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, chatted to Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more.

CHEW PROPERLY

Most of us chow down through conversation, mid emails or in front of the telly without giving much thought to chewing our food. But, there are enzymes in the mouth that kick start digestion and if you haven’t allowed enough time for them to work in the mouth, it can make life more difficult for the rest of the gut to properly break down food, leading to irritation and bloating. Aim to chew each bite 20 to 30

times to allow the gut to digest with ease.

EAT AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS

Focussing on food in front of you not only helps you to taste it better, your brain also has the chance to engage with what you see and smell before the first bite. Without the distraction of something else, potentially stressful, such as work emails, social media, or the latest crime drama on TV, your body is in a state of calm referred to as “rest and digest,” which is optimal at meal times. An otherwise engaged body won’t produce enough stomach acid to properly break down food, which may result in bloating and irritation. Take a proper lunch break, sit at the dining table without the TV on and put your phone away to allow your gut to concentrate on doing its thing.

START WITH SOMETHING BITTER

Ever wondered why a bitter green salad usually accompanies steak, or mint sauce is served with lamb? Bitter foots such as rocket, kale, chicory, lemon and watercress help kick start the digestive process by encouraging stomach acid production. This is especially important for meals that include fats and red meat, which compared to other foods, take longer to break down. Include raw and bitter foods with a lemon or vinegary dressing to start your meal and help your gut prepare for optimal digestion.

AVOID DRINKING WITH MEALS

It’s important for the stomach to be very acidic when digesting food, but drinking lots of liquid between mouthfuls can lower the concentration of acid, reducing the rate at which the gut digests. It’s recommended to drink 20 to 30 minutes before or after a meal to aid efficient digestion and prevent bloating. If you do like to drink with your food, stick to smaller sips rather than large gulps.

LOOK OUT FOR PATTERNS

If you tend to feel bloated after most meals, take note of what might be causing it. Some common culprits can be gluten or wheat, dairy, sugar, or fat-heavy foods such as red meat and fried foods. Compare how you feel when you don’t eat these items to get an idea of triggers or possible intolerances. Speak to a health professional for tailored advice and support on how to improve your symptoms with functional testing available for further insight.

Q&A Fashion and Beauty

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

What beauty look will suit my traditional country house venue?

A traditional country house wedding can offer a fantastic mix of historic classic features and modern luxury. A sleek chignon would provide effortless elegance if you're getting married inside. For longer hair, go for classic Hollywood waves with one side tucked behind your ear with a delicate clip giving you a timeless look.

If you're getting married on the grounds of a traditional country house in a conservatory or marquee, a softer romantic look will work well with a textured bun. The slightly undone updo with faceframing pieces left out will soften the look, or a half-up and half-down hairstyle finished with flowers would look perfect.

When choosing your bridal hairstyle, go for what makes you feel comfortable and confident regardless of trends - true beauty comes from within.

BRING ON SPRING

We’re having a spring wedding with many bright colours, and I want to incorporate our theme into my make-up without overdoing it. Do you have any suggestions?

My absolute go-to would be a pop of colour on your lips, as it’s a perfect way to incorporate beautiful spring colours without feeling overdone. If you’re after something more subtle for the ceremony, opt for a slightly softer tone for the vows before using a bright shade for a completely different look for the reception.

If bright lips are too much for you, a bright blush at the high points of the cheeks elevates a look too. Dior has some beautiful bold blushes that look so soft on the skin.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

I bought a dress with no embellishments, and now I’m worried it’s too plain. How can I add the wow factor to it?

Even with simple pieces, you can accessorise a wedding dress to add some wow factor. A simple belt will visually make your waist appear thinner while drawing attention to the details. You can choose a satin ribbon, a corset belt or a jewel version for some added luxury. Shoulder straps can be a charming touch to a wedding dress with bare shoulders, which can be made of precious stones or left plain to match the gown. Or a neckline can be embellished by a lace insert, requiring precise sewing.

Beadwork not only adds some sparkle but that luxurious dimension. Beautiful multicoloured patterns can be achieved by adding small beads on the corset, sleeves, skirt, gloves and veil. Why not add the same pattern to the groom’s accessories for a harmonised look?

Almost any alteration is possible with sufficient starting materials; don’t be shy to ask a professional seamstress for ideas. Remember, it’s also possible to convert your wedding dress into a fantastic evening gown after the big day.

FINDING YOUR DREAM VENUE

What advice can you share regarding finding our dream wedding venue?

Start with the area where you’re looking to hold your wedding celebrations and the type of venue you’re after. Consider if you’re after a stately home, barn, countryside setting, contemporary space or somewhere in a city centre.

Make a rough guest list to see how many guests you’ll likely have in attendance to help narrow your search. Some venues might not be large enough to host all your loved ones if you’re having a grand wedding. If you’re after an intimate wedding with fewer guests, check if the properties you consider have a minimum number.

Next, you can calculate what fits within your budget. Contact the properties to obtain their price list for venue hire, catering, drinks and any extra touches. Check what’s included in the packages and what else you’ll need to consider, such as entertainment and venue styling.

If you have a particular date that you are set on, check to see if the venues have that day free. Ask to place a holding deposit while you decide between your shortlisted venues to take any extra pressure away.

Do your homework on each venue’s website. Look at some of the previous wedding photos to give you an idea of some of the memories you can make on your special day. Are there any particular features the venue has that must be included in your photographer’s portfolio?

You can provide your guests with a traditional wedding breakfast or a barbecue if that’s more your thing. Some venues will also offer a dry hire option whereby you can bring in your own caterers if you’d prefer.

Only book a venue after visiting the property. Most will hold spring and autumn wedding fayres, so you can visit the spaces and meet other suppliers simultaneously. You can also book a private viewing to discuss what you’re after in more detail. See if the venue has testimonials on their website and if any previous guests have left a review – recommendations are invaluable.

BRING ON SPRING

What flowers work best for a spring wedding, and what should we keep in mind?

Spring is the season for soft-stemmed bulb flowers – think tulips, hellebores, muscari, daffodils and ranunculus. There’s also the brief chance to use romantic blossom branches! Bulb flowers have delicate stems, so avoid tightly binding bouquets to prevent anything from getting crushed.

If you love the eucalyptus look, remember it’s out of season from May to June. So, choose alternative grey or green foliage such as senecio (dusty miller) instead.

RUSTIC ROMANCE

My hubby-to-be and I are having a rustic-themed wedding and would love to incorporate the style into our décor. Do you have any ideas?

It’s essential to start with your colour scheme to help us bring rustic elements to your day. We can incorporate the shades into the ceremony through the styling and décor elements. A wooden statement piece like an arbour will be the perfect backdrop to the vows, and we can move this piece to the top table for the reception. Incorporate wooden log slices with cylinder vases, candles, bud vases, personal touches and chair sashes to the aisle to add those all-important details.

Incorporate your colour palette to your top table during the reception, as this is a statement location where you’ll have many photos taken. Continue the rustic touches with log slices, wooden table numbers and a personalised wooden box filled with beautiful flowers to highlight your colour scheme. We can incorporate these rustic touches to the guest tables if you’d like a continuous style or combine the theme with something different on each table. A table plan and rustic signage made from reclaimed wood will create the perfect finishing touches.

The key to a memorable wedding is attention to detail. Alongside your venue stylist, who should be friendly and supportive, you should be able to make your dreams a reality.

CAPTURING MEMORIES

So many photographers are out there – how do we choose the right one for us?

Firstly, shortlist photographers whose style grabs your attention. Look at their website and social media pages to get an idea of their work before asking to see a couple of wedding galleries too. Typically, you only see a few highlights from each wedding on social media or their website. So, seeing the full range of what they can offer is ideal.

Consider if you prefer a more natural style or lots of posed and dramatic images. Hiring someone you get along famously with is no good if their editing style doesn’t match what you’re after. A light and airy photographer will not want to edit your photos in a dark and moody style or vice versa. Ensure you’re happy with what they typically offer and you have a shared vision for the day.

Always read reviews from couples who have used the company to give you an idea of how they work and might fit into your day. Try to meet the prospective photographer in person before booking them, as it could ruin your wedding if you don’t get along well with them.

NOW THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

We’re looking for entertainment that will appeal to guests of all ages. Do you have any suggestions?

A DJ is the perfect entertainment option for your big day. Playing the right music at the right time in a wedding environment is a skill that takes years of experience to perfect, as there’s time for eating, catching up with loved ones and dancing. Encouraging your guests to suggest songs in advance is lovely, but be prepared not to like their choices. Requests on the night require quick thinking from the DJ. Will the songs fit with the current vibe of the room or clear the dancefloor? A DJ has the whole room in mind as it’s their job to keep the atmosphere popping. They must be quick-witted, have a good knowledge of the couple’s musical tastes and only play requests that fit the specific criteria. Saying no to recommendations based on this knowledge can be tricky, especially when some guests might have had one too many drinks. A friendly and diplomatic personality is necessary for a wedding DJ in these circumstances!

Around 20 songs or genres chosen by the nearlyweds in advance is the perfect number to allow the entertainer to work their magic. Mark each song or genre on your list with ‘must play’, ‘could play’, and perhaps ‘do not play’. You’ll then be able to relax knowing your DJ has your back and wants your night to succeed as much as you do.

Styling advice for the groom-to-be

Choosing a wedding dress is only part of the story when it comes to your big-day styling. To achieve a coordinated look, it’s important to think about what the groom-to-be and groomsmen will be wearing too. What you choose will ultimately come down to the style of wedding that you’re planning, the location and, of course, the time of year. To help you create the perfect look, the experts at Suit Direct (www.suitdirect.co.uk) have shared their styling advice.

HOW SHOULD A SUIT FIT?

Whichever style you go for can make or break your look. An ill-fitting suit, sagging shoulders, or a bunched-up jacket instantly cheapens your look – so how can you tell if a suit fits correctly?

Shoulders – a perfect fit will see your suit jacket lie flat on your shoulders and not be too bunched up or hanging off at the edges. A good benchmark is being able to relax your shoulders easily and comfortably.

Jacket – a suit jacket should close without strain and not cause creases, bunching, or sag forward when buttoned up. Equally, it should drape smartly when open and not droop down at the sides. You should be able to slide your thumb between the button of the jacket and your stomach without it feeling too tight or loose. In terms of length, the bottom of the jacket should end where your thumb knuckle is, and you should leave the bottom button undone to allow more freedom of movement.

Arms – the sleeves of a suit should be snug but not tight and show around 1cm of the shirt’s cuff – perfect if you want to show off cufflinks.

Trousers – the trousers of your suit should fit comfortably around the waist without falling away from your hips. They should just graze the top of your shoes or even leave a small gap. Trousers that are too long will bunch up and spill over your shoe – so make sure you know your leg measurements.

HOW TO MEASURE A SUIT

Measuring for a suit can take a little bit of effort, but it’s worthwhile to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated on the day. Size up if you’re looking for a skinny-fit jacket and trousers, and don’t rely on old measurements – you’d be surprised how quickly they can change.

Measure and note down the most prominent part of your chest, the narrowest part of your

waist and from the top seam of your inside leg to the trouser hem. Then, slip on a jacket and measure from your shoulder to your shirt’s cuff. Men with larger waistlines should take this measurement where they would naturally wear their trousers – this will ensure a plus-sized gentleman can still get a comfortable fit.

HOW TO MIX AND MATCH SUITS?

When it comes to mixing and matching, the main thing to note is the colour of each suiting element; create a combination that works in harmony, complements each piece and doesn’t clash too much. Pair a coloured jacket with dark trousers or chinos for the perfect smart-casual look, or pair a classic tailored men’s suit jacket with a mismatched pair of coloured trousers. Whether you’re after a formal look or a creative combo – the options are endless. The suit has evolved, and it’s now acceptable to wear tailoring your way.

AFFAIR A grand

Louise Prance experienced the ultimate luxury combined with traditional Greek appeal at Rhodes-based Ixian Grand & All Suites

Approaching Rhodes by air, you’d be forgiven for missing a bird’s-eye view of the Ixian Grand & All Suites thanks to the beauty of Greece’s largest island, but for the eagle-eyed travellers you can spot the hotel due to its inimitable layout and luxurious beachfront private pool suites nestled luxuriously on the beach of Ixia Bay, just metres away from the sea.

Ixian Grand & All Suites is only 7km away from Rhodes town and the Medieval City of Rhodes, as well as being a mere 10-minute drive from Filerimos, one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes.

Overlooking the Ixia Bay and Aegean Sea, this hotel has the beauty of being adult-only, so is the ideal destination for a honeymoon offering total relaxation.

LUXE APPEAL

With 124 deluxe guestrooms with garden or sea view, the garden complex offers accommodation in 122 spacious and comfortable guestrooms, while the suites area is comprised of five buildings with 102 rooms and suites.

While all rooms offer a level of luxury only befitting a resort of this calibre, the aforementioned beachfront private pool suites are without doubt the way to go if you’re looking for a once-ina-lifetime experience, and I can attest you will wake up every morning to pinch-me-moments looking out over your private infinity pool to the crystal clear Aegean sea that stretches as far as

the eye can see. Looking for further wow factor? Enjoy a romantic soak in the bath and appreciate the floor-to-ceiling windows while watching the sun set over the ocean.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Talking romance, no honeymoon is complete without a romantic meal or five, and the Ixian Grand & All Suites has romantic eateries down to a fine art. Vis-à-Vis, the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, focuses mostly on the Mediterranean diet and the Greek cuisine, but also international food.

Milonges, is an open-air restaurant offers traditional Greek cuisine and is located by the main swimming pool, serving lunch and dinner, while Muza Htista offers Japanese and Peruvian cultures. My personal favourite was the Alazonia Suites Restaurant – while only available to those staying in suites, this stylish restaurant serves breakfast and dinner, with outdoor or indoor seating options.

Evenings were spent embracing the laidback Greek culture and indulging in a tipple or three at Truman’s Lobby Bar, which has a stunning terrace with views to the gardens, pools and the sea.

AND RELAX…

If you’re able to drag yourself away from the room, the pools and the idyllic scenery, then it’s almost a perquisite to try out the hotel’s spa, and Ixian Grand & All Suites offers one of the most tranquil I’ve had the pleasure of attending.

Offering massages, facials and beauty therapies, the spa also has an indoor pool and a Turkish bath, as well as a complimentary gym with a fitness instructor offering various daily classes – if you’re so inclined. I opted for a more relaxing pastime instead, and indulged in a full body

massage. An hour of total bliss, I emerged feeling even more relaxed, if that’s at all possible.

SIGHT SEEING

While it may be unimaginable why you’d want to leave the hotel’s complex, it would be remiss to visit a Greek island and not explore the locality and embrace the culture. We opted for a day trip to the Medieval Rhodes Old Town.

With walls four kilometres long, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and dates back more than 2000 years. With a breathtaking history, the site features Medieval buildings, mosques, traditional fountains, oriental motifs, Byzantine and Gothic churches, shops, a market and restaurants aplenty.

We whiled away hours mooching inbetween the castle walls, picking up classic Greek souvenirs before sampling traditional Greek food – and of course wine. What could be better than enjoying a sun-drenched glass of white while looking at white-washed buildings before heading back for sundowners at the hotel?

No honeymoon would be complete without getting out on the water, and activities abound in Rhodes. From SUP fun, to romantic boat rides, to kayak tours. Tick the aqua box and your romantic Greek getaway would be really complete.

A SPA DAY Santa needs

Now, I’ve been lucky enough to stay at The Runnymede once before, although the warm summer’s day certainly wasn’t comparable to the wintry, grey November day I found myself in when visiting a second time. I wondered; did it alter my view having been before? Could I honestly find enough about it to tell all my lovely readers about an authentic experience – well, read on, because you’ll hear why it was second time’s a charm for me!

As previously mentioned, the ominous grey skies of this winter’s day (and the M25 car park), hadn’t set me up for the most relaxed of mindsets to start my night away at The Runnymede. Arriving at the hotel, I was a tad deflated to say the least. However, no sooner had I trudged my way through the hotel’s revolving front doors was I warmed to the bones with a cosy ambience exuding from the lounge and lobby area. A true winter-warmer, there was a huge log fire keeping everyone toasty, Christmas trees and decorations glistening in abundance, low lighting complementing the hum of people relaxing and chatting away – I was instantly enthralled.

The modern aesthetic of the hotel has been sympathetically considered so that style never surpasses comfort. The large sofas and seating areas are all strategically placed to provide snug yet social spaces to catch up with loved ones or enjoy as a romantic twosome. Attentive waiters attend to your needs immediately; it wasn’t long before I was relaxing on a plush sofa next to the log fire, looking out at the river – still picturesque even in the winter – with a cocktail in hand. My morning was forgotten, a distant memory, although I think the cocktail helped with that too!

Our spacious River View suite was more than enough for two people on a much-needed night away. Armchairs and a table perfectly poised to watch the river run by, an enormous bed offered a perfect night’s sleep, and the bathroom was a suite in itself: two sinks and mirrors, walk-in shower and bath – it was like your very own beauty parlour! I could have easily whiled away an hour or two in our suite, but I swiftly changed into my robe, grabbed my book and headed down to the spa.

The spa is accessible from the main hotel, with its own entrance and reception area it feels like a luxurious members-only retreat. Whether you want to get the endorphins going in the fitness centre – which boasts river views – or while away the time in the swimming pool or Jacuzzi it’s got something for everyone. There are also adult-only times for the facilities which is perfect for minimooners.

After reading a few chapters in my book while enjoying a fruit

tea in the spa’s lounge area, I was greeted by a therapist to take me for my complimentary treatment an ESPA Back, Neck & Shoulder Massage.

Now, I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack, not just because I’m knotted up like a coil, but I also find it hard to practice mindfulness and enjoy the experience. I’m also out of my comfort-zone sat there in only a towel – I even hide in the bathroom at home! My therapist Claire was amazing, putting me at ease, she was incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions I had; it speaks volumes that I was able to nearly doze off! I also felt the knots in my back disperse for the first time, I knew I’d had a thoroughly wonderful and beneficial massage. The Runnymede is perfect for a spot of pre- or post-wedding pampering, treatments include manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and a variety of massages as well as half-day and full-day spa experiences.

When staying in hotels, I’m always keen to book into the restaurants rather than venture out. Both dinner and breakfast were served in Leftbank, the hotel’s renowned buffet restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the river. At night, the dark winter evening was interspersed with intimate lighting, and the hotel’s festive décor really came in to its own with an extra splattering of fairylights and shimmering tones. The food was insatiable, for even the most discerning of critic who may shy away from the word ‘buffet’ but this is not an average offering!

With all kinds of culinary delights from delicious antipasti boards and salads to a variety of meat and fish options there’s something for everyone for starters, mains and desserts. As it was a Sunday we delved in to a hearty roast dinner (which was also on offer) and, not that I really had room for dessert but they certainly went down a treat – I tried three of the delicacies on offer! The open kitchen, wood-fired oven and rotisserie also provide a visual extravaganza too, cooking right before your eyes. Breakfast the next day didn’t disappoint either. Due to the light flooding in, the Leftbank feels bright and airy in the mornings, energising you for the day ahead. Again, there was possibly too much choice of fare from continental to hot cooked options, sweet and savoury, healthy fruits and muesli. There was not one fault in the dining experience on offer here.

After a final coffee, gazing at the river, we were thinking about our day ahead in Windsor complete with a visit to the castle to see the Christmas decorations! Alas, it was time to say goodbye. I couldn’t quite believe the whirlwind 24-hours I had here and that was all down to the wonderful experience The Runnymede had given me. From the surroundings to the staff, the wellbeing ethos to the mouth-watering food, I was looked after, rejuvenated and ready for the world again. Thank you!
