Summer lovin’
Hellolovely readers, and welcome to another Your Herts and Beds Wedding issue! Summer has entered the chat, and I couldn’t be more excited! We’re seeing many festival-themed weddings and outdoor nuptials thanks to the more consistent weather, various seasonal blooms and extra daylight for celebrations.
If you’re embracing the outdoors, remember to provide loved ones with some shaded areas so they can take breaks from the sun. Why not supply sun cream for favours and opt for an ice cream truck for some real summer vibes? If possible, avoid direct sunlight at the hottest points of the day and look for breathable attire to stay cool. For those concerned about the heat, your suppliers will help advise accordingly.
As the time of year is so popular for weddings, ensure you book companies as soon as possible as they’ll get booked up quickly. Start the planning process with an open mind and ensure you ultimately plan a wedding that symbolises you both. Remember that teamwork makes the dream work! Once you have set a budget, decided on a theme and booked a venue, everything else will fall into place. To help with the process, we’re hand-selected suppliers around the region to help bring your vision to life. We’ve got you covered from showstopping venues, styling inspiration, expert advice, the latest news and trending fashion. We’ve even got stunning local weddings and styled shoots to help inspire.
That’s all from me; happy planning! Olivia

Craft & Cleaver Catering are super excited to announce their 2024 wedding menu. The talented chefs specialise in rustic feasts cooked over live fires, and the on-trend menu includes showstopping dishes such as cedar-plank hot-smoked salmon served straight to the table still nailed to the plank, tendersmoked beef brisket and sticky maple squash with creamy miso cauliflower. Canapé options include lamb tacos with wild garlic and nettle chimichurri as well as rockefeller oysters cooked on the coals.
Adam Richardson, owner and firemaster, talks us through the concept. He says, “We’re on a mission to redefine wedding food with rustic feasts cooked over sustainable wood and charcoal. Our idea was born out of our sister business, St. Albans barbecue restaurant Craft & Cleaver, with the same principles of using fire and smoke as an ingredient paired with excellent customer service. Couples can expect the same quality that has made the restaurant a Hertfordshire firm favourite, and we love going above and beyond to make weddings memorable.” Contact the team to discuss more details and what else they can offer.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Based in Hertfordshire, Brookmans offers a complete dining experience for memorable moments with loved ones. Great food is vital for a successful gastro pub, so I was eager to try the dishes and spoiler alert – I wasn’t disappointed!
Located in the heart of Brooksmans Park, a peaceful village surrounded by countryside, the pub offers a contemporary setting with luxurious and charming interiors. As we walked through the doors, the friendly staff welcomed us to our table before providing a menu featuring various meals.
For starters, I opted for the flavourable twice-baked cheddar and comté souffle, which was light and airy, paired with a walnut and rocket salad. Both the taste and texture were spot on!
Next was the pan-fried seabass with butter beans and sun-dried tomatoes. When I tell you this was the best seabass I’ve had in the UK, know I’m not exaggerating. The team perfectly cooked the delicately flavoured fish, and the salsa verde complemented it perfectly. Each

The company’s first wine festival was a huge success! The team welcomed more than 500 wine enthusiasts to the stunning Lucas Lane Cricket Club. mouthful offered all types of wonderful flavours to enjoy.
What better way to finish the meal than a smooth, creamy lemon mascarpone cheesecake? The sweetness of the white chocolate and raspberries worked well with the sharp lemon and tangy flavours. The passionate chefs beautifully presented each dish with plenty of love and care, making our experience even more special.
General manager, Mitch Brummitt, ensured we had the perfect meal from start to finish. As did the enthusiastic team, who were attentive, professional and knowledgeable about the dishes. We had a wonderful evening full of delicious food in such a beautiful setting – I will definitely be returning soon!
The atmosphere provides the perfect setting for relaxing with loved ones before the big day or pre-wedding date nights. With multiple events coming up, seasonal menus, private dining and outdoor space for al fresco meals, what location could be better for memorable occasions?

As well as being a beautiful setting, guests may be intrigued to learn about Knebworth House & Park, also known as The Stately Home of Rock. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Oasis and more than 100 other major artists have played at Knebworth Festivals. The site has also made starring appearances on the big screen in major feature films, series and music videos, including Batman, The Crown and The King’s Speech
The beautiful 16th-century barns are filled with charm and character.
The Manor Barn can accommodate up to 150 guests for ceremonies and wedding breakfasts, while the Lodge Barn is the perfect place to dance the night away with space for up to 250 guests. Alternatively, The Lytton Barn can host up to 80 for ceremonies, whereas the Cobbold Barn can accommodate up to 120 guests for wedding breakfasts and 200 guests for evening entertainment. The stunning Knebworth House Banqueting Hall is steeped in history, creating a magical atmosphere for guests. The space can host 100 people for the vows or 60 guests for wedding meals. Or, St Mary’s Church of England is also located within Knebworth Park, and the venue’s team will happily contact lovebirds to discuss options directly with the church. Why not tie the knot in the beautiful formal gardens for those looking for al fresco celebrations?
The staff at Knebworth House are on-hand to discuss how they can enhance special events. They understand the importance of weddings and will be there to help coordinate events so everything runs smoothly.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN
Arthur and Megan’s gorgeous reception featured a peach and gold colour scheme
Images courtesy of Lorna Newman Wedding Photography
These lovebirds were originally friends but decided to date three years later when sparks began to fly. As they were already good friends, the pair knew plenty about each together and spent years making special memories before Arthur proposed at a ruined castle on the Isle of Skye over a picnic – it was a big surprise for Megan! After tying the knot on the island, the pair planned a large reception to celebrate with all loved ones. Here Megan shares details about their special day…
REAL WEDDINGS 25
We wanted a games theme, so the large garden and the pool area at Shortmead House were perfect!
Our whole party was centred around the Highland Games theme, which involved tug of war, cricket and welly wanging. We divided our guests into teams and designed a round-robin tournament so everyone got involved.
We dotted around peach roses, eucalyptus and bunny tails around the venue.
We used fairylights, lanterns and flags to decorate the marquee.
We asked our guests to bring their favourite photographs of us to hang around the bar area with notes written on each.
The groomsmen and our fathers had buttonholes, while the bridal party had wrist corsages.
26
We let our wedding party wear what they wanted, as long as it was in keeping with
Guests played water polo in the evening, which was competitive and brilliant to watch!
Our mums and Arthur’s grandma made our semi-naked cake, which was decorated with fresh fruit.
Arthur wore a gold cummerbund and a larger buttonhole to stand out with his tuxedo.
A brilliant band performed after dinner, and some guests are booking the team for their special day.
the black-tie theme.
REAL WEDDINGS 27
I wore a Justin Alexander dress with long sleeves and opted for a ponytail to show off the beaded back. I finished the look with some simple silver earrings and trusty Birkenstocks so I could properly compete in the competitions!
We enjoyed the day and were so happy to celebrate with loved ones.
I was so pleased with how our friends and family got stuck in and enjoyed the games together.
One of the groomsmen made our day extra special; he was the masterof-ceremonies and let us borrow his Land Rover for photos!
Our photographer Lorna Newman was terrific and I’m so pleased we chose her to capture the day!

TRUE LOVE
George and Sean had a beautiful wedding surrounded by their nearest and dearest Images courtesy of Angels With Dirty Faces Photography
George and Sean met at the Barn Theatre in Welwyn Garden City in a production of Blue Stockings. But it turns out they’d met before! The pair both went to the same secondary school and were in the same form for a few months before George moved. They never crossed paths again until meeting 13 years later!
Sean proposed on a clifftop in Cornwall just before lockdown in 2020. George grew up camping every summer at Mother Ivey’s Bay with family, and this particular spot overlooking the beach is her favourite place on earth. The pair made it even more special over the years together, so what location could be better for such a memorable moment? The bride says, “It was an extremely rough day with high winds and I stood on the cliff edge looking out to sea, totally oblivious to Sean down on one knee behind me asking the big question – I didn’t hear a word! I nearly took too many steps backwards in surprise when I eventually turned around!”
SETTING THE SCENE
When planning the wedding, the couple wanted a relaxed day surrounded by many wonderful people. The bride says, “We didn’t want to get bogged down in frills or details; it was all about the people for us and making mum’s presence felt as much as possible. My mum's dear friend Selina is a reverend and used to read at our local church. She took the service for my mum’s funeral shortly after we got engaged. The current reverend at St Giles was kind enough to let her officiate for us, which was special as mum always loved the idea that she might marry us one day.” Having a lifelong family friend conduct the ceremony was incredibly special, and Selina ensured the day was extra personal – she was a dream come true. The couple wanted a big garden party for the reception, which was perfect as the bride’s family home was just a short drive from the church and had ample outdoor space. George says, “The location holds a special place in many hearts, not least of all my mum’s. So it was an easy choice for us, and luckily my dad was up for hosting 150 revellers!”
The lovebirds were very chilled about all the arrangements and the day itself. They just wanted everyone to kick off their shoes and feel relaxed. The bride’s godmother, mother-in-law and mumma C pulled together a team of the mother-of-the-bride's friends in the days before to decorate the huge stretch tent with flowers from the garden, table runners made from coffee bean sacks, wrapped jam jars in hessian filled with flowers, a wooden palette with timings of the day and fairylights. The pair hired trestle tables, benches and borrowed haybales from the neighbouring farmer, which were covered in blankets. The same farmer let them use the field behind the garden for parking. The bride says, ”Another of mum's close friends is an incredibly talented florist who made the bouquets and buttonholes, which were stunning.”
To keep guests from going hungry, loved ones enjoyed a three-course meal with wine and fizz from Majestic Wine. The bride’s brother baked 500 of their mum’s famous sausage rolls for canapés, and the lovebirds booked a fantastic vegan caterer Veg Heads to keep guests from going hungry. The team served burgers and hotdogs from a food stall and a doughnut wall for pudding.
The overall effect was a garden fit for fairy royalty, filled with light, magic and the very best of people who literally kicked off their shoes and danced the night away – just as the pair had hoped for.
LOOKING THE PART
The bride wore Somerset by Wtoo from Heritage Brides at Hatfield House, and her rose gold Louboutins were a wedding gift from the
REAL WEDDINGS 31
groom. She says, “I’d always envisioned a classic silk fitted dress, but it didn’t fit the relaxed garden vibe we were going for. My consultant Sam picked a lightweight, sleeveless gown with a thigh-high split off the rail that sang A Midsummer Night’s Dream George borrowed a veil and garter from her maid-of-honours, and Steve at Godshaw Jewellers let her borrow her favourite pieces for the day – a fortunate bride indeed! Thanks to her make-up artist, she felt amazing after getting ready and couldn’t wait to see Sean. The groom wore a tailor-made suit from Beggars Run, which he'd always dreamt of, and it happened to be the final one being made when he placed the order! The groomsmen chose their suits as the pair wanted everyone to be comfortable. The man-of-honour and Sean’s eightyear-old groomsman were in matching suits by chance, which looked so lovely in photographs.
The maid-of-honours wore the well-known infinity dresses in mauve and looked radiant! Two just had babies, so the bride was fortunate to have two beautiful flowergirls three weeks and six weeks old. So, the mums needed to be comfortable and able to move and feed easily.
TIME TO CELEBRATE
The newlyweds were fortunate to have many creative and talented people in their lives, including a reverend, florist, artist and musicians! Pete Dawson played the cello for them during the ceremony and the reception. He’s an exceptional musician that’s a master of many instruments and musical languages. So many dreams come true thanks to the generosity and kindness of friends. In the evening, the pair dragged the tables and benches aside to make way for a dancefloor, which the brilliant DJ kept filled all night, knowing exactly what music guests wanted!
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
The couple felt happy, excited, overwhelmed and a little nervous on the day. But once the official bits were over, they were buzzing to spend time with everyone and enjoyed every second of the day –particularly the first dance to Mumford & Sons' Lover Of The Light
The speeches were fantastic; there was so much laughter and a few tears. George comments, “We loved having all our loved ones' children with us too! Nothing adds to the joy of a day like kids running wild and having fun!”
So many people went above and beyond to ensure the lovebirds had the perfect day. The bride says, “Selina created a service that brought mum into the room, Julie stepped in as mum when I needed her most, my brother baked for us, Sam’s best man speech was terrific, everyone came to party and our loved one Jenny read a beautiful poem that had us bawling. Plus, our photographer Denise captured everyone and the vibe of our day beautifully – we can treasure the images forever."
HONEYMOON
Eight months after the special day, the pair spent 10 days in Sri Lanka thanks to guest contributions towards the trip. The lovebirds planned the honeymoon and had a fantastic time adventuring around the coast and mountains, swimming with turtles, watching whales, eating lots of food and relaxing by the sea.

THE DAY perfect
Hanbury Manor provided the perfect location for Emma and Greg’s wedding Images courtesy of Purple Kite Photography
These lovebirds met working together at Somerset House in central London and bonded over their love of Game of Thrones – the rest is history!
Greg proposed during a week’s holiday to St Lucia at the end of March 2022 at Rodney Bay. He says, “I was quite nervous, and although it was quiet, people kept walking by! I had to wait for them to walk off before I got down on one knee as I didn’t want an audience!” He popped the question during the sunset, which was very romantic and an absolute surprise for Emma!
Here she shares details about their special day…
35 REAL WEDDINGS
We fell in love with The Summer House at Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club. It’s such a beautiful light and airy space that overlooks the garden courts with blooming flowers.
I felt surprisingly calm until I was about to walk down the aisle! But once I saw Greg, I focused on him and relaxed after the ceremony.
The Summer House brought the outside in, and the large room right behind it was the perfect setting for our wedding breakfast with a balcony, sweeping stairs and a beautiful fireplace.
We donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK on behalf of all the guests and had little cards printed on the day to honour Greg’s mum who has Alzheimer’s.
I drew a decorative flower border for the table plan and table name cards to add a personal touch. The team at Coral and Blue Events then arranged the names and created a timeline in gold for the table plan.
The centrepieces were gold plinths with tiered candles provided by Coral and Blue Events, and was put together by our friend Michelle who did amazing flower displays.
36
We had a beautiful threetiered naked cake, and each layer was a different flavour starting with a Madeira jam sponge on the bottom, lemon cake in the middle and a boiled fruit cake on top.
I wore a Stella York wedding dress customised to have a boat neckline – it was simple, understated and classic. The dress also had pockets and a short train with buttons down the back.
The hotel provided all our catering! We had toasted goat’s cheese and smoked mackerel to start, chicken and risotto for mains and a milk chocolate cheesecake for dessert paired with Australian wine to keep on theme!
I loved my hair and make-up on the day as it brought my whole look together!
I knew I didn’t want a veil, so I chose a beautiful pearl headband to complement and finish my look.
The groom wore a three-piece navy suit from Antique Rogue with brown brogues, a tie, a pocket square and personalised cufflinks. The suit was a lighter shade of blue to stand out against the groomsmen.
37 REAL WEDDINGS
The bridesmaids wore sage green dresses to match the colour scheme, but each chose a different style that suited them best.
We had a custom-made photo booth for the day and a Polaroid camera, which was a hit with the children! Guests could stick their photos and leave a message in our memory book.
We also laid a table of Greg’s favourite chocolates and sweets from Australia for everyone to enjoy.
Seeing our loved ones all together was very special as Greg’s family had travelled from Australia to be with us on the day.
As it rained all day, we had some fantastic pictures with umbrellas thanks to our wonderful photographer Sarah.
We had a fun evening with loved ones thanks to the passionate team at Hanbury Manor, who ensured we had the perfect wedding.

DREAM WEDDINGS
Local suppliers share tips and tricks to help couples create their dream day
Planning a wedding might seem daunting, but it should be a fun experience where you can reflect your style and personality to create the ultimate wedding. Get organised from the get-go by listing everything important to you both and highlighting any priorities. It’s always good to know what you want on your big day, but I recommend not focusing on one style and ruling everything else out.
Start the planning process with an open mind to discover new elements and exciting ideas that could work well for your day. Remember, communication is vital! Take this opportunity to work together as a team so the day fully represents you both. Don’t get caught up trying to please everyone else; remember it’s your day, and your loved ones should support your vision.
When planning your wedding, remember the time of year and the season, as this can help dictate your colour scheme, venue, theme and venue styling – it's a great place to start if you're stuck! Search online for inspiration to find styles you love, Pinterest will be your best friend,
and create a mood board to combine all your ideas. Here you'll be able to see if something doesn't look quite right or needs tweaking. Ensure you have left plenty of time to book your favourite companies when sourcing local suppliers, especially if you're exchanging vows during the busy wedding season – suppliers will get booked quickly. Search the companies online to view their work and read reviews from past couples to find out their experiences with the team.
A good company should be reliable, knowledgeable and helpful. We suggest an in-person meeting to gauge the team and discuss your wedding in detail. Communication is critical when creating dreamworthy weddings, so ensure you update your suppliers with any changes in the run-up to the day or any concerns you might have.
Remember, they want you to have the best possible day and should be there to help in any way possible.
To help you plan your dream wedding, we've asked experts to share their tips and trick to help with the planning process.

SARAH PURKIS AT SP WEDDING ART
Magicians, wedding artists, photo booths, garden games and arcade games – the list goes on! All types of entertainment will drive conversation, provide entertainment and create those all-important memories of your big day. However, some can even double as wedding favours for your guests!
If you choose to hire a wedding artist, keep in mind the flow and atmosphere of your day to help find the perfect supplier to accompany your event. There are a wide variety of wedding artists, ranging from mobile caricaturists who move around your venue doing quick ink drawings of your guests to static painters who can take a few hours to
create one stunning larger painting for the happy couple to cherish. A middle ground would be illustrators and painters like myself, who sit and create a gallery of pictures of individuals, couples and small groups for guests to take home.
Once you find someone who will fit your wedding, don’t hesitate to check them out on social media and email them. They may have packages or suggestions, which you haven’t considered! It’s never too late to consider adding an extra touch to your wedding, especially as some suppliers offer last-minute deals.

SHARON ALLAM AT SUNFLOWER CEREMONIES
Be different and don’t allow the ceremony to be the boring bit of your day. Guests should not think about when the service will end and how quickly they can reach the bar. There are also numerous ways a celebrant can involve your guests. Why not consider introducing a ring-warming ceremony, guest commitment vows or perhaps a midceremony champagne toast?
Nerves are natural, so don’t worry about standing and speaking in front of your guests. You’ll get to know your celebrant beforehand, so they’ll understand what you’re comfortable with. Super memory skills are unimportant. Vows can be read and repeated, or you may choose
to respond to your celebrants’ questions.
Embrace the hiccups as you’ll look back and laugh about these moments. Understand that however well-organised you are, a child may run up to you mid-ceremony, a granny may have one too many glasses of fizz, or you may drop the ring during the ring exchange. It doesn’t matter! These moments will become memories and often make the most fabulous photos.
Finally, trust your suppliers and use their experience to your advantage. They want you to have the best possible day.

ELIZABETH MARSHALL AT GATWARDS OF HITCHIN
Those getting married this year may be considering their wedding rings for the big day, which is an essential purchase with many things to consider. At Gatwards, we’ve been helping couples find their ideal wedding rings for more than 250 years. So we’ve put together our top tips when buying your wedding rings.
Firstly, don’t mix metals! If the engagement ring is platinum, the wedding ring must match – this is the same as white or yellow gold. Over time, the different metals will wear down at different rates as some metals are harder than others. For example, platinum is a stronger metal than gold. Remember, there are different styles of rings and a thicker band could mean a different ring size than a thinner one. The finger size will increase if the hand is warm and decrease if it’s cold. We recommend coming into a shop and having your finger measured by a qualified
jeweller to ensure the perfect fit.
Most wedding rings are made to order and therefore take approximately four to six weeks to arrive in-store. Please don’t leave your ring shopping to the last minute because you don’t need the added stress of not knowing whether your rings will be ready in time.
Think about whether you intend to wear your wedding ring all the time because this will influence your choice about whether to go for a plain band or a gem-set band, which will need additional cleaning and regular maintenance every so often.
Did you know that wedding bands can also be engraved with either the date of your big day or a short meaningful message? Whatever your requirements, we're happy to help find dream-worthy rings.

RACHEL DIXON AT UNTAMED FLORALS
Flowers are an essential part of your wedding; they set the tone and theme for the day. It’s advisable to start looking at florists as soon as possible after securing a wedding date and venue to ensure you find the perfect supplier before they get booked.
When looking at different companies, consider whose style you love and what designs resonate with you the most. That way, they’ll have the perfect atmosphere for your big day.
Budget is essential when deciding on flowers, so be honest with your
florist. As a rough guide, you should spend approximately 10 per cent of your wedding budget on the blooms. To maximise your costs, try to be flexible regarding flower types and varieties. Your florist will then pick the best blooms available for your wedding date.
It’s a great idea to repurpose your arrangements. For example, a floral arch could be moved from the ceremony entrance to behind the top table for the perfect backdrop to the wedding breakfast. Check out: www.untamedflorals.co.uk

Look your big-day best with top expert advice
What are your top beauty tips to get me looking my best?
Your skincare routine is the first step towards flawless make-up! Find what products work best for you and stick to them; this will help to avoid any potential breakouts near your big event as your skin is getting used to everything. So, ensure you’ve found your perfect routine in plenty of time.
Not to sound like a broken record, but drink plenty of water. It might mean numerous inconvenient trips to the toilet while your body is flushing out toxins, but this will quickly reduce back to normal – your skin will thank you!
Looking your best is all to do with confidence! There’s a lot to be said when you feel happy and at peace with yourself – your smile will say it all!

NAILED IT!
My boho wedding is quickly approaching, and I’m trying to plan the perfect bridal nails. What would you suggest?
The first step is to think about your budget. Consider if you would like a luxury full-service experience, a bridal package, a travelling service or a salon. Then consider the style of nails you’re after. Multiple options include gel polish, builder gel, acrylic, UV gel, extensions or natural nails. Think about whether you want a solid colour, nail art or rhinestones.
Pinterest and Instagram are perfect for finding inspiration! Create a moodboard of all the styles you like. Neutrals shades, ombré effects, leaves, feathers and lace nail art are currently popular options.
Look through the social media pages of nail technicians that fit your requirements. Keep in mind if awards, continuous training, prestigious events, published work or celebrity clientele are essential to you. Don’t risk infection or an allergic reaction! Choose a certified and insured nail technician, which is a legal requirement in the UK.
For a cute memory, ask your nail tech if they can recreate press-on nails for a keepsake shadow box with your bouquet – a great way to remember your big day.
TOP TIP: Oil your cuticles daily for healthier nails that will last.

Being Sophie
Sophie Stonehouse on body positivity, self-love and flawless skin
Social media sensation Sophie Stonehouse, is perhaps best known for her appearance on the fourth series of Netflix’s reality dating show, Too Hot To Handle. Hailing from Brighton, she was the only British cast member and made her mark as the group of risqué singletons were put to the test of abstinence in order to keep their prize money high and stay in with a chance of winning it. Since leaving the villa, she has dedicated her time to producing fashion and style content for her social media followers, now numbering in their hundreds of thousands. Lesser known however are her struggles with body dysmorphia and her fight to achieve body positivity. Being the centre of attention on their wedding day, isn’t every couple’s dream with issues such as Sophie’s becoming more prevalent, and importantly more commonly discussed. So, CWM’s beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, caught up with Sophie to find out how she overcame these personal challenges, as well as discovering her top health and wellbeing tips.
What will you take away from your time on Too Hot To Handle?
The experience really taught me about self-love and respect. It also taught me that the most incredible experiences in life, happen when you least expect it. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to go on the show.
What have you been up to since you left the show?
I’ve completely transformed my career to become a full-time content creator. It’s a job I’ve always wanted to do. It’s definitely not an easy one, but it’s very fulfilling. I’ve also found a new relationship since leaving the show, and I’m very happy.
You seem very at home in your own body. How did you find this confidence?
Body confidence is something I’ve definitely struggled with, and I’m definitely a victim of body dysmorphia. But, I found the confidence to be at home in my own body, when I realised that I was never truly going to be happy with it. I noticed that I was always finding something to complain about whether I was overweight or underweight. Once I learned to accept myself, only then did I truly feel at home.
Are you able to tell us a bit about your battle with body dysmorphia and coming out the other side?
I’ve suffered badly with it over the past couple years. Since being
66

a young adult, my weight has fluctuated year after year, and when I turned 18, I put on quite a bit. Then, as the first Covid lockdown hit I fell in love with fitness and completely transformed my life and body. However, that did come with its own disadvantages. I became obsessed with it all and would really get down on myself when I didn’t work out or eat right. Ultimately though, it taught me that no matter where I am with my body, I’m always going to want to change something whether I’m in perfect shape or not. I feel that now I have a happy balance and have accepted myself the way I am. I know that I want to look good, but I also want to enjoy my fried chicken burger, fries and a gallon of mayo without feeling bad!
How do you want to encourage and inspire women to discover their own self-love?
I think it’s important to remember that no one really cares. That’s what I learnt after suffering with pretty bad acne. I thought everyone was looking at me and the reality was that they just weren’t. As soon as you start putting yourself outside of your comfort zone, your confidence will grow. Another big one: don’t be mean to yourself, give yourself a break.
Wedding dress shopping can be a stressful time for those with worries about certain aspects of their body. What should they be looking for to feel more confident on the big day?
I think it’s so important to leave any expectations at the door. Go into the shopping experience with an open mind and a clean canvas. I’d be looking for something I feel comfortable and myself in. I think it’s important to remember that most people aren’t completely happy with themselves, and that’s okay. Go with what feels right and remember: on the day you really won’t care about the little things.
For many, their wedding day is the first time a couple will find themselves the centre of attention with all eyes on them. Some may find this uncomfortable, particularly if they’re feeling self conscious about their body. What advice would you have for them?
As long as you’ve made the day enjoyable for yourself as well as your guests, you’ll get lost in the experience. I think a lot of couples get caught up in making the experience great for their guests, but forget about their own wants and needs. I think it’s important to have fun with the
whole thing, don’t do anything or wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or not yourself. This is your day to shine. If you don’t like wearing a high heel and it isn’t for you, then don’t! Make the day perfect for you and throw on those trainers.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day at the moment starts with a dog walk and a coffee. I live next to a canal, so I walk my dog there every morning. I then get back and make myself some breakfast and start my working day. After work I’ll try to walk him again before heading home to make dinner and relax. At this point in my life, it’s all about career and I’m happy with that.
Your skin is flawless! Tell us about your daily skincare routine. Surprisingly I don’t do a lot! I have very sensitive skin, so I like to keep it minimal. My go-to everyday skincare routine consists of my Garnier Micellar Water on a cotton pad, which I use to clean my face and remove all make-up. I follow that with Simple’s Replenishing Rich Moisturiser and Eye Cream. It’s really just that simple… less is more!
Are there any products you’d recommend to a nearlywed looking to get their skin in top condition for the big day?
I’d highly recommend GlamGlow’s face masks. They’re incredible and will help to get your skin looking perfect for the big day. For those suffering with acne, my top tip is: stop touching your face! I’m a picker and once I stopped it went away, very quickly.
What make-up products can’t you live without?
Cream contours and eyebrow gel!
What’s next for Sophie Stonehouse?
At the moment I’m working towards growing my platform. We have some exciting things in the pipeline for this year so you’ll just have to wait and see!

CARTER HAIR & MAKEUP
Holly says, “The bronzed look creates the perfect sunkissed vibe for those looking for a natural style. The look is created using shades matching your skin tone and can be adapted for any bride looking for a holiday feel to their wedding day make-up.”

NIKI MAKEUP
Nikki says, “This look features natural and glowing skin, highlighting the bride’s best features while defining her eyes to make them stand out in photographs. Subtle shades of pink and peach on the cheeks and lips complete this look beautifully.”
MAKEUP BY KATY
Katy says, “Pink tones can be soft and feminine but enhance blue eyes when used correctly. Warm, muted pinks on the lips give a chic and elegant finish, which allows the focus to be on the eyes. Cool toned skin will find this look natural and effortless, but it can also be enhanced for a dramatic effect.”

LORELLA MARELLA MAKEUP ARTIST
Lorella says, “If you’re a bride-to-be that generally doesn’t wear a lot of make-up but still wants to feel like herself with a flawless finish, this look is for you! The glowy skin is soft; you can still see my client’s freckles. Matte eyes finished the look perfectly when paired with a neutral lip.”
NIKI MAKEUP
Niki says, “I like to emphasise eyes and skin using golden tones for added warmth and a soft lit-from-within glow. Eyes are defined using shades of gold and bronze while creme bronzer, golden highlighter and dewy foundations achieve beautiful glowing skin.”

CARTER
HAIR & MAKEUP
Holly says, “This look uses delicate pinks for a muted version of glam make-up and is more suited to a bridal look. Using the correct colours to complement your eye colour works beautifully as a stronger look.”
GLOW BY KT
Katie says, “Pink make-up is trending, but pops of pink have been a bridal favourite for a while for those looking for that romantic feel – I absolutely love this look!”
MAKEUP BY KATY
Katy says, “This soft, peach-toned look is wearable on all skin tones and takes you from spring to autumn. Blended with rich bronze tones, the look brings a summery vibe and lifts the skin tone when used as a pop of colour.”
LORELLA MARELLA MAKEUP ARTIST
Lorella says, “Glowing skin, warm bronze eye make-up and flare corner lashes work perfectly for the summer months or even a wedding abroad. Foundation mixed with highlighter creates that perfect glow, especially when there’s peachy blush on the apples of the cheeks and a nude lip.”
GLOW BY KT
Katie says, “Glowing skin is in, especially when paired with a soft wing and glossy lip – you really can’t go wrong. The make-up style is quickly becoming my most requested look for brides-to-be.”

CARTER
Holly says, “The bold lip is perfect for the bride who isn’t afraid of a bit of colour. Keeping the rest of the look clean is often more effective, so the focus is kept on the lip for a striking look that can be used year-round.”
MAKEUP BY KATY
Katy says, “You can absolutely rock a bold lip on your wedding day when paired with softly defined eyes, so the lips are the focus. Keep the skin looking flawless but skin-like while keeping everything else muted yet defined for balance.”
Lorella says, “This look is for the bride who wants that Hollywood glam. Keeping the skin coverage medium with a soft contour and use bronze glam for the eye make-up with layers of mascara. Highlight the inner corners for that pop, and a rosy lip will finish the look off.”

NIKI MAKEUP
Niki says, “A classic look is best enhanced by applying individual lashes for a natural-looking finish while still enhancing and defining the eyes in photographs. Unlike a strip lash that feels heavy and irritating, they’re easily removed and comfortable.”
GLOW BY KT
Katie says, “This stripped-back natural look is super skin focused to enhance my client’s gorgeous freckles. I used champagne tones and cluster lashes to make her eyes pop – the finished result is simply stunning!”

HOT TOPIC
Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas
PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT
We’re tying the knot next year, and a friend mentioned getting a prenuptial agreement. Is this worthwhile?
A prenuptial agreement is a formal document signed by a couple before they marry or enter a civil partnership. It sets out how the couple wishes their assets to be divided if they divorce or have their civil partnership dissolved. Here are several reasons why couples choose to create a prenuptial agreement:
•One or both parties wish to protect assets built up before the marriage.
•They wish to clearly state what will happen to any assets acquired during the marriage or civil partnership.
•There are family trusts and or inheritance plans need to be considered.
•There are debt obligations.
Prenuptial agreements may be automatically enforceable in other countries, but this differs in England and Wales. However, a professionally drafted and executed prenuptial agreement will likely be persuasive to the court. There are reported cases where a judge has considered a prenuptial agreement unfair and will not consider it during a settlement case. Fairness is always the court’s key consideration, and it will always seek to protect the needs of both parties and any dependent children (current or future).
The agreement must be capable of being enforced contractually, and the terms of the agreement must be fair and reasonable. The parties must enter into the agreement at their own free will and will likely not be upheld if there’s any evidence of undue influence or duress. The agreement must be signed or executed as a deed, with parties providing full and frank financial disclosure.
The agreement must also be prepared before the wedding to allow both parties to receive legal advice. The Law Commission report deals with Qualifying Nuptial Agreements and recommends that the prenuptial agreement be entered at least 28 days before the wedding. If you do not have enough time before your wedding, entering into a postnuptial agreement after your marriage is possible.

SUMMER VIBES
What advice can you share for our summer wedding?
If you’ve booked your wedding far enough in advance, it’s a great idea to visit your wedding venue a year before the big day to see what flowers and colours are prominent on the grounds. That way, you can match your floral décor, headpieces and bridesmaids’ dresses.
Check that your venue has air conditioning in case your wedding day is baked in lovely summer sunshine, but also have a plan B in case the weather takes a rainy turn.
Consider a barbecue for the wedding breakfast, which makes a delicious alternative to a formal dinner. Offer guests some summer cocktails to add something extra special to your day. Why not also arrange for an ice cream cart to be on hand in the gardens so that guests can enjoy a nice, sweet treat in the late afternoon sunshine while the team are turning your ceremony space around for the evening party?
To avoid your guests getting blisters while they dance the night away, consider providing a basketful of flip-flops to change into when the heels get too much!

CREATURE COMFORTS
Your Herts and Beds editor, Olivia Gibson, says: Probably the biggest challenge you’ll face when planning an al fresco wedding is – all together now – the weather! But if you plan, you’ll find ways around it while still having the best open-air celebration you could wish for.
Make sure everyone’s adequately informed. When you send out your invitations, ensure you’re clear about what parts of your day will be celebrated outside, or indeed all of it, so that guests know to make their arrangements for attire and protection. Keep an open line of communication with your suppliers too, and collaborate with them on wetweather backup plans. For example, at which point will you be prepared to take it all inside? Who is going to be responsible for moving the whole shebang? Check on the access to your venue. If you’re tying the knot in a field, is there parking nearby? Are there accessible roads and paths to get to you? If not, think about overcoming these challenges for your guests. Perhaps you must lay on extra transport from a local car park, for example. Also, think about accessibility from the point of view of any less
able-bodied guests you may have coming.
Sound tends to drift away in the open air, so ensure you have all the tech in place to ensure everyone can hear you say, “I do.”
You’ll also need to check with the venue whether there are any restrictions on late-night music, as you don’t want to disturb the local wildlife or residents! Also, do you have all the creature comforts in place on the tech front, such as loos and generators?
Think of what cover you want to provide for you and your guests; this is crucial for the comfort of all in terms of wet weather protection and the sun – we’ve had some scorchers in recent years. Once you’ve settled on a vibe for your nuptials, this should all become clear. An elegant, lined marquee is ideal for a classic wedding, whereas a tipi is the perfect choice for a boho or rustic vibe.
When it comes to styling, look at your setting and plan ways to complement it with your theme. Nature can do incredible heavy lifting on this front if you strive to work with it rather than against it.
A SLICE OF THE ACTION
How much is a wedding cake and how much do we need?
TIME TO CELEBRATE
What advice can you share for the perfect confetti throw?
Wedding confetti throws make for some of the most joyful photographs in wedding albums. You can maximise getting the most out of these shots in some great ways. From confetti’s size, shape and style to how it’s thrown and presented.
If you want to use real petals, our advice is the bigger the better. Larger petals take longer to fall and have less disruption from the breeze, which works better for outdoor photos. The added weight makes them easier to aim, and their size makes more of an impression in your photographs. For dried petals, choose a mix of sizes to help with coverage. Just make sure guests throw up and not at you! If you’re an animal lover or having a child-friendly wedding, a confetti pony could be for you! Children are absolutely enthralled with these gorgeous miniature ponies. It’s a truly memorable way of carrying and presenting confetti to guests.
If your venue doesn’t allow wedding confetti, bubbles are a brilliant alternative. Not only do they add beautiful luminescent colours to your shots, but there’s also no clearing up afterwards! Invest in some bubble guns with greater power and trajectory to fill the photos. Alternatively, smoke bombs inject colour and personality into your wedding shots. Just choose a great backdrop and give yourself lots of space.
Paper wedding confetti comes in all shapes, sizes and colours. Best of all, lots of options are now biodegradable. We recommend this kind, not just for the environment, but because it will travel a long way. Some of our favourite shots have come from using the multi-coloured discs – perfect for summer weddings! Don’t be afraid to load up on wedding confetti; the more, the better!
Champagne sprays are perfect for party-loving couples and will make you laugh. Plan your spray at night with targeted production lighting for dramatic photos to capture every last drop.
With any throw or spray ideas, always speak to your venue and photographer to ensure they are both on board and happy with your choices.

When ordering a wedding cake for the first time, setting aside a budget is tricky! As you browse for inspiration for your dream cake, there’s no ‘one size/price fits all’ approach. Here are a few options to consider.
•Size matters: Different-sized cakes can offer different portion numbers in a tiered arrangement. Ideally, cater for 80 per cent of guests unless serving the cake as dessert.
•Flavours: Guests may devour a slice of each if you opt for different flavour tiers, and you may need additional cake if you save a tier for yourselves.
•Design: Sugar flowers, edible gold leaf, sparkles and those beautiful ruffles you set your heart on add to the cost. A four-tiered wedding cake with fondant ruffles and sugar flowers could take 20 to 30 hours to create and, depending on design complexity, cost upwards of several hundred pounds.
•Venue: If you’ve booked your dreamy large manor house with vaulted ceilings, a small-tiered cake could disappear within the grandeur. So faux polystyrene tiers, acrylic or metal separators can replace cake to minimise leftovers and achieve a stunning centrepiece.
Cake designers will always provide a starting price using the above information to help you budget your dream cake!

Dressed TO IMPRESS
The team at Colour Me Beautiful share their fashion advice for the groom-to-be
Choosing the right outfit for your special day will come down to a variety of factors: the style of wedding you’re having, the venue, the time of year and, of course, what your partner is wearing. To help you find the perfect look, we’ve asked Cliff Bashforth, the MD of Colour Me Beautiful, to share his top styling tips:
CHOOSING A STYLE
There are different styles of formal attire available for men, some of which are more traditional than others.
Morning dress: This is the most formal suit worn during the day and works well for all body shapes and sizes.
Tuxedo: A formal look typically used for evening receptions, tuxedos can be either single or double-breasted, and for a less formal look you have the option of adding a coloured tie and waistcoat or cummerbund.
Frock coat: A popular addition to the wedding scene, the frock coat can be made from luxury fabrics such as brocade or velvet. It’s best suited for average to tall, inverted triangle and rectangle body shapes, but can be worn with a waistcoat.
Lounge suit: This is a relaxed formal wear and is suitable for any time of day. If you aren’t used to wearing a suit during the day, this might be the most comfortable option. Choose fabrics carefully: a crisper fabric for an inverted triangle, lightweight for a rectangle and a softer, woven fabric such as lightweight flannel for a round body shape.
Alternatives: If a uniform is part of your life, you may want to wear a formal version of it for your wedding. The same applies if you have traditional dress, religious or otherwise. For an informal wedding, you may want to wear a lounge suit, with or without a tie.
HIRING
Don’t hesitate to hire the men’s attire, but make sure that you have tried your suit on in advance
and that the sleeve lengths are correct, and the trousers fit properly.
Whether you want the best man, fathers, and ushers to wear the same as the groom is entirely a personal choice. However, the best man usually wears the same style of suit as the groom. What the other men in the bridal party wear often depends on the formality of the wedding. If you choose to have a page boy or ring bearer, make sure that he’s comfortable in what he wears to avoid any last-minute tantrums.
ACCESSORIES
The way the men in the bridal party wear the various accessories that complete their outfit is important, and you will want to make sure they get it right. This is where you can co-ordinate or contrast colours and demonstrate some of your personality.
Shirts, ties, and cufflinks: The choice of shirt will depend on the neckwear. For example, a tie requires a standard shirt and collar, a self-tie cravat can be worn with a standard or wing collar, a cravat needs a wing collar to go with it and if you’ve decided to go for a bow tie, team it with a standard or wing collar. Whatever the type of neckwear, it should be made from silk so it falls well.
Cufflinks are only worn with a shirt that has double fold back cuffs. Beware of choosing jokey inappropriate cufflinks for a formal wedding.
Waistcoats: You can choose a waistcoat in the same colour as your jacket or a contrasting one. Consider wearing something different from the rest of the men to help you stand out and make your own fashion statement. As with any waistcoat, always leave the lowest button open.
Cummerbunds, belts and braces: A cummerbund can be worn with a black tie or tuxedo and is great for tidying up the waistline and disguising a rounded stomach.
A cummerbund should always be teamed with a bow tie, and you can have fun choosing suitable colours for both.
If the suit trousers have loops, these call for a belt (and certainly no braces), but if these are unable to be altered to fit for the occasion and there are no belt loops, braces will be needed. Under no circumstances should these be worn together!
Shoes and socks: Black shoes should be highly polished and not scuffed; black patent can be worn with black tie. Make sure any labels on the soles are removed before wearing them.
Socks should be worn in plain, dark colours and made from wool, cotton, or silk. Avoid man-made fibres to prevent discomfort. They should be long enough to cover your lower calf. Boutonnière or buttonholes: A boutonnière is a small flower arrangement placed in the buttonhole. Your boutonnière should match the flowers or colours used throughout the rest of the wedding.
Boutonnières for the rest of the men in the wedding party should be the same style or colour as yours, but not exactly the same in other respects. Double check that the stem of the boutonnière is securely pinned to the lapel.
GROOMING
Make sure you’ve booked a haircut for the photographs. If you have heavy brows, they should be controlled – you may need to get your tweezers out! It goes without saying that shaving or beard trimming must be attended to at the appropriate time prior to the ceremony. Your hands will also be on display on the day, so treat yourself to a manicure the day before the wedding or do it yourself if you have the time.

Groomed Mobile Barbers have seen a rise in bookings for home haircuts and beard trims for weddings. Able to set up anywhere, Groomed Mobile Barbers bring with them everything needed to ensure your hair is styled, beard is trimmed and shave is perfectly smooth.
Owner Giuliano Dore tells us: “In many cultures, the bride gathers with her bridesmaids to have her make-up and hair done just before the wedding, but in the past, men simply queued at their local barber shop waiting for their turn. Now, everyone wants to have memorable photos, look their best and make more of the morning preparations. I advise grooms-to-be to consult with a barber about the style that they want before the wedding. A dramatic change may not be the most sensible thing to do just before you say your vows. Have a restyle a month or two before so that your wedding cut is just a tidy up and there are no shocks on the day.”

MY EVERYTHINGMy first, my last,
Located in the South Ari Atoll, renowned for its marine life and coral gardens, the resort is spread over two islands: one, the blissfully peaceful adult only island; the other slightly more buzzy, welcoming families; both stunningly beautiful and connected via a 500m wooden bridge – the first of its kind in the Maldives! Getting there couldn’t be easier with BA flying direct from London Heathrow! Once you land in Malé, you can rest in the Conrad Lounge to cool off with a refreshing juice, bite to eat and even a shower if you so wish before you embark on your seaplane for a 30-minute breathtaking flight to your home for the duration of your honeymoon. And home it is. The resort’s friendliness is not to be taken for granted, expect warm smiles, relaxed vibes and no stuffiness often associated with such glamorous resorts.
AN ISLAND OF FIRSTS!
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island boasts the nation’s first underground wine cellar, first below sea level bedroom in The Muraka (with the first underwater elevator in the Maldives!), first dedicated cheese bar and the first to open an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Maldives, Ufaa – to name a few of its innovations. It’s only right to be the first destination to experience as a married couple. Goosebumps, right?
A ROOM WITH A VIEW
I was fortunate to stay in one of the sunset water villas complete with a private plunge infinity pool allowing you to watch the sky turn from the brightest blue to blazon orange with a glass of bubbles in hand. Utter indulgence. If staying over the water is not your thing, the opposing side of the island offers fabulously chic beach villas with private pool just steps away from the turquoise waters that you’ve only ever seen on postcards.
UNDERWATER LIFE
Maldives offers worldclass snorkelling and diving opportunities. On the Rangali Island’s house reef, I was lucky enough to spot a manta ray, baby black fin sharks, who have kept to the shallows to learn to feed and grow, parrot fish, turtles, reef sharks and shoals of colourful fish imitating a scene

Rachel Westall experienced five-star, desert island luxury at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
from Finding Nemo! If this isn’t enough, the resort offers an excellent range of water sports and boasts a PADI 5* dive centre. I was lucky enough to enjoy a champagne sunset cruise where we viewed joyful spinner dolphins playing gleefully in the waves; as well as our search for the magnificent whale shark which, like us, enjoys bathing in these warm, tropical waters.
indulged in a 90-minute session entitled Mindful Bliss. Watching the fish beneath through the glass-bottomed treatment room, my therapist began the ritual to restore harmony and balance. She started with the most fabulous back massage, followed by a mini facial using clear quartz crystal wands and finished with the entrancing effect of fragrant coconut oil being gently poured on my forehead and hairline (often known as your Third-Eye Chakra). My hair has never felt so nourished following this invigorating hair and scalp massage.
A FOODIES’ PARADISE
Foodies are in for a treat with 12 restaurants to sample. Wake up to room service or enjoy breakfast at Vilu, the à la carte establishment offering dishes from smashed avocado with sourdough to eggs benedict to sensational pancakes for those with a sweet tooth, or head over to the very relaxed Atoll Market, the resort’s only buffet restaurant. Here you can sample many international cuisines, everything from sushi to freshlymade omelettes and help yourself to a smoothie pressed-to-order or a fruit platter from the cold room.
Another first, dine below deck at fine-dining restaurant, Ithaa. Here, I was lucky enough to enjoy a set menu which consisted of silky dill-infused salmon, foie gras torchon, and miso and truffle marinated black cod fillet, all beautifully paired with a sensational Sauvignon Blanc – all this whilst watching reef sharks gliding past the surrounding glass walls. As well as these choices, there’s Ufaa by Jereme Leung, where you can sample handmade noodles and dim sum; and the island’s health restaurant, Mandhoo – expect freshly caught seafood, lobster and fragrant flavours aplenty.
FEEL-GOOD TRAVEL
Eco-conscious travel is all the rage and Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is certainly getting involved in the promise to go green. You’d be hard pushed to find a single-use plastic in the resort as bamboo options (even your key card) are being introduced at every opportunity. Furthermore, and I was so excited to be a part of this, in 2017 the resort launched a coral regeneration programme, which aims to protect the surrounding reefs. With a complex eco-system and more than 10,000 species in the Maldives, the programme includes a coral nursery and a coral adoption programme for guests to partake in. The super-friendly dive team and I took to the waters to replant baby coral to flourish in their new home and hopefully thrive and grow. In six months’ time they’ll update me on my coral’s progress! Watch this space...
TRUE ROMANCE
It’s safe to say the staff at Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will do everything to make your stay one to remember whether you’d like to experience private dining beneath the stars on your veranda listening to the sea lap around your stilted accommodation; or a private beach dinner, just you, your love and the powder white sand beneath your feet. For total relaxation, a visit to one of the island’s two spas is a must. I

HONEYMOON REVIEW 81
HAVEN A Celtic
Peace and tranquillity awaits honeymooners at Galgorm in Northern Ireland
WhileNorthern Ireland might not be the first place you think of when planning a mini-moon, having spent two nights at the incredible Galgorm Resort near Ballymena, CWM deputy managing editor Kelly Andrews is here to change that!
Northern Ireland’s premier luxury hotel and spa, located just 30 minutes from Belfast, offers the ultimate haven of relaxation. Set within 380 acres of parkland with the sometimes rushing, sometimes babbling River Maine running through it, Galgorm’s enviable location truly provides an escape from the real world.
A SPOT OF R&R
The jewel in Galgorm’s crown is the Thermal Spa Village, which I’d go so far as to say is unique, as I can honestly say I’ve never encountered its like. So vast is it that you need a map to orientate yourself! It’s fortunate indeed then that it has it’s own app containing just that, plus all the info you could possibly need during your stay. My accommodation was a mere two-minute walk to the entrance, so I was up bright and early, donned the robe and flip flops provided, and was off to investigate. Despite the flight from Stansted the previous day being one of the most stressful in recent memory, I could already feel the tension melt away as I strolled alongside the River nodding a cheerful, “good morning,” to fellow guests as I went.
If your experience of a spa is a pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and a sauna, maybe a hot tub if you’re really lucky, you’ll be swept off your feet by the Thermal Village! Mainly based in the open air it features a Wonderland of treats to explore and experience around every corner. I happened upon the Riverside Garden first; home to outdoor pools, hot tubs, The Salt Cave, a cafe and the Celtic Sauna. In some of the Resort’s packages you’ll receive a complementary 10-minute Celtic Sauna Infusion here, which was the case with my shepherd’s hut accommodation. So naturally, I wasted no time!
We were shown into the sauna by our sauna master, where I was pleasantly surprised to find a floor-to-ceiling window along one side acting as a frame for the stunning, tranquil landscape beyond. It occurred to me that what this place does so well is allow nature to do its thing in providing all the beauty and relaxation anyone could wish for. The landscape is part of the experience, not just a mere sideline, but I digress...
This treatment is a traditional Aufghuss ceremony consisting of three balls of ice being thrown onto hot coals, each one containing essential oils to benefit the body in a different way (breathing, circulation and skin) with each temperature more intense than the last. The air was circulated by the sauna master who used a towel to push the aromas towards us in the mesmerising, dance-like movements characteristic of the ceremony. As Celtic music played softly in the background, it was easy to drift away. When the ritual was over, we were escorted to the firepit area, where we were served a cool and refreshing watermelon punch to bring the body temperature back down.
As I continued my explorations, I came across The Walled Garden and couldn’t resist stopping for a cocktail in The Palm House, where I was able to recline and take in the views of the beautifully manicured gardens. Soon though, it was time for my private Riverside Bathing Experience. From reception, charming host Kenneth showed me the way to Birch, my very own secluded hot tub for the hour. The water is heated by log burner to 39 degrees, and the comforting smell of the wood burning only adds to the experience. A glass of prosecco waited for me and I was able to order more drinks using the QR code provided, which would be served tubside. All of my senses were engaged as I listened to the calming music and the sounds of the flowing river, sipped on my prosecco, enjoyed the smell of the wood smoke, and felt the warm water relax my muscles – this was the life!
The Thermal Village is actually open until 9pm, but by 6pm it was

time for me to reluctantly head back to the hut to get ready for dinner. I procrastinated all the way though, stopping en route for one last visit to my beloved River House (with its infared beds and views of the cascading River), a hot chocolate enjoyed on the riverside boardwalk, and a spell in The Alpine Garden’s vitality pool.
HEARTY FARE
The foodies amongst you will be equally as delighted by Galgorm as the spa aficionados since there are no fewer than three restaurants to choose from for dinner: Fratelli Ristorante, Gillies Grill and Castle Kitchen + Bar (the latter just a short transfer away). That’s not even counting the other options for afternoon tea in The Conservatory, where you can also find the Cocktail Bar & Gin Library, and McKendry’s, all up at the main house.
This was my first visit to Northern Ireland and I found the people to be some of the friendliest I’ve ever encountered while travelling. We honestly felt like we were among friends, and the staff at Galgorm can’t do enough for their guests. We didn’t have to make the walk from our shepherd’s hut to Gillies Grill once as we simply dialled reception and a short while later a thoroughly charming member of staff would be there to collect us, which was most appreciated, particularly when it rained.
Gillies Grill is reportedly a favourite amongst guests and locals alike, and it’s not difficult to see why. With a warm informal atmosphere, and hunting lodge vibes, it offers a menu sure to delight any palate. Interestingly, the menus for all of the eateries at the Resort are accessed via QR code, so you can peruse at leisure on your phone. No doubt developed during the pandemic, it helps to keep everyone safe, but is also kind to the environment cutting down on paper.
I opted for the barbecue pork bites, followed by the braised brisket of beef for main, finished off with a selection of delicious Irish cheeses. After thanking our super-sweet and helpful server, we made our way through to the adjoining McKendry’s. With a traditional Irish pub vibe, it’s also the Resort’s exclusive whiskey bar, offering an impressive collection of 300plus varieties from more than 21 countries. Here, we happily let our dinner go down while sipping on another cocktail and listening to the live music.
When it comes to culinary highlights, for me, it was breakfast. I’ll admit to being like a kid in a sweetshop! The spread was a joyous sight to behold with everything you could possibly dream of for the most important meal of the day from muffins and pastries; fish, cold meats and cheeses; cereals and fruit; to pancakes, full Irish breakfast, waffles and toast. Self control was most definitely needed!
HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Opened as a bed and breakfast more than 30 years ago, Galgorm has grown into the immense site it is today with 125 luxurious guestrooms, including 48 deluxe rooms, Junior and Signature suites, along with a range of more out-of-the-ordinary accommodation such as log cabins, cottage suites, shepherd’s huts and exclusive residences perfect for groups. But it hasn’t stopped there as it’s still growing with works currently underway and more in the pipeline. Even as I visited, work on a group of two storey cottages was nearing completion and land was about to be cleared for the new treehouse accommodation.
I was happily ensconced in one of the Resort’s shepherd’s huts during my stay. Welcomed by an electric woodburner cosily heating this home away from home, we quickly discovered all the comforts we could wish for were provided. I was obsessed with the huge outdoor copper bath, which I made a dive for as soon as I’d dumped my bags. The complimentary G&T and bath bomb, were much appreciated additions following the aforementioned airport hell.
For honeymooners though, there are two particular showstoppers that I would highly recommend! If you’re looking for ultimate luxury, Suite 1857 can be found in the original manor house and offers unrivalled views of the River from its Juliet balcony. Elegant and romantic, its rooms are decorated in brocade wall coverings in a muted palette, antique lighting, and French Baroque-style furniture, with solid oak floors and beams. It features a lounge area with sofa and two arm chairs for curling up in front of the TV, plus bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower.
If a secluded, rustic, woodland escape is more your vibe the Shepherd’s Hut Suite is the place for you. Nestled in Galgorm Wood with the cascading River running alongside it, it’s luxuriously appointed with a lounge, mini kitchen, and bathroom with shower room and free-standing bath. But the stand-out features, without doubt, are your very own sauna and hot tub on the terrace. Enjoy a soak in the warm waters as you watch the sun set and raise a glass to yourselves, the newlyweds.

Do not disturb
Nestled in 72 acres of tranquil parkland in the Staffordshire countryside, Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat is a luxurious property with lavish suites, spa facilities, lakeside dining and a wellness centre. The retreat offers a private location surrounded by unspoilt views of the rolling countryside, setting the perfect scene for romantic minimoons and getaways.
I felt a calming oasis as soon as I ventured onto Moddershall Oaks’ winding driveway. With the sun beaming down on me, I quickly left the outside world behind. The next thing I knew, I was enjoying an elderflower spritz while chatting to the attentive and friendly staff who were on hand throughout my entire stay.
REST YOUR HEAD
With only 10 suites on-site, I was excited to see my accommodation, and I wasn’t disappointed when I entered the modern space. Complete with air-conditioning, a seating area with plush furnishings, a private terrace, a smart TV, a desk, and a stylish bathroom with a rainfall shower; it had all the amenities needed for a tranquil stay.
All overnight guests can book a private 30-minute session in the outdoor hot tub. I went for a late night dip, so I could enjoy the sun setting and view the beautiful stars. The water was the perfect temperature, with water jets and warm lighting to add to the oh-so-romantic atmosphere.
When it was time to rest my head, I quickly entered dreamland thanks to the comfortable king-sized bed and fluffy pillows.
THE ULTIMATE SPA SESSION
Moddershall Oaks is more than just a spa; it’s a tranquil setting to enjoy quality time with loved ones. In the heart of the property, couples will find an outdoor heated vitality pool to enjoy year-round regardless of the weather. Surrounding the pool are comfortable loungers, providing the ideal location to read a book and enjoy a bite from the spa deli. I loved the views of the rolling countryside from the Kelo sauna and the calming setting in the intimate relaxation lounge with comfy sofas and blankets to
snuggle up.
The indoor spa area was my favourite space, with a hydrotherapy pool plus two overhead water jets designed to massage the upper back and neck muscles, while helping to promote blood circulation. Some of my personal highlights included the steam room, the 10-meter pool, the foot baths, heated loungers and the experience shower.
I was lucky enough to experience an Indian-inspired head massage during my stay. The talented beauty therapist used the latest massaging techniques to help tackle the problem areas in my upper back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. As someone who struggles with tension headaches, I didn’t realise how much I needed the treatment. For 25 minutes, my problems melted away while I focused on the relaxing music and the calming aromas.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to enjoy a two-course meal at The Oak House Restaurant after hearing great things about the menu. Spoiler alert, I wasn’t disappointed! Using local produce and fresh seasonal ingredients, where possible, the talented chefs created a feast. For my starter, I went with the lemongrass chicken bao buns with apple and cucumber salad and a spiced honey dressing. I opted for the beerbattered haddock fillet for my main, with skin-on triple-cooked chips, homemade tartare sauce and pea puree – the flavours were exquisite.
Wrapped in my fluffy robe, I returned to the restaurant for breakfast the following morning – the perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a continental breakfast followed by avocado on toasted sourdough and a poached egg before walking around the lake and relaxing in the hammocks. I was sad to be checking out of this wonderful resort and can’t wait to return soon.
