The Bugle – A WONDER OF THE SOLENT

Wonder House Group, a newly formed collection of one-of-a-kind historical houses, has announced the opening of The Bugle, a landmark building on Southampton’s Bugle Street, renowned as one of the city’s most important addresses. Starting off 2023 with this exciting opening, this is the first of three venues to open over the coming years, with the delightful Dunford House in West Sussex to follow.

STEP INSIDE

The Bugle is a picturesque townhouse venue overlooking Southampton’s Royal Pier, available as a location for photo shoots and unique homestays as well as events. The building was built and designed in 1846 by local architect Thomas Sandon Hack and initially used as a private members club. The Grade II-listed Italianate features of The Bugle have resulted in it being regarded as the most beautiful Victorian building in the city, retaining many of its original features today.

BE OUR GUEST

The most unique aspect of The Bugle is the freedom the venue allows its guests. The house is a blank canvas that can be fully customised for any event – from intimate cocktail parties to glorious wedding celebrations and corporate get togethers. When hiring The Bugle, guests are given the keys to the house where they can decorate the venue in their own style, select a caterer that suits them and literally have the run of the house.

WEDDINGS, EVENTS AND HOME STAYS, OH MY!

The five-storey townhouse accommodates celebrations up to 104 guests seated with further capacity for standing events and provides customers with the use of three event spaces, eight unique bedrooms, a completely equipped kitchen and a fully stocked late-night basement bar.

For home stays, the house sleeps 16 guests across the eight rooms, along with access to the whole house with the set up able to be completely unique for every stay, dependent on requirements. Guests can also explore the rest Southampton, or even take a short trip to visit the Isle of Wight.

THE FINER DETAILS

When hiring this venue prices start from £2,500, which includes: exclusive hire of venue and grounds, 24-hour security, full bar service and glassware, advice on catering and suppliers, trestle tables and chairs to seat 120.

Happy New Year!

Hello

lovely readers and welcome to another issue of Your Hampshire and

Dorset Wedding!

As we welcome 2023, there are no January blues here as I’m excited to see what this following year will bring. One thing is for sure, more showstopping nuptials!

I can’t wait to see weddings feature Pantone’s colour of the year, viva magenta. The shade will undoubtedly impact the wedding industry thanks to its powerful and empowering hue. Congratulations if you’ve got engaged over the festive period! If I could share one piece of advice for wedding planning, it would be to ensure the day reflects you both and don’t get sidetracked by trying to please others. This should be a fun experience where you find a colour scheme and theme you both love before searching for talented companies who can bring your vision to life.

There’s a reason traditional weddings have been popular for decades. The classic styling, grand venues and traditional attire will always create elegant nuptials year-round. But expect to see more couples breaking away from tradition in 2023 and pushing the boundaries to create their dream day.

If you don’t know where to start with wedding planning, you’re in luck as we’ve been busy sourcing the very best local suppliers to provide top inspiration. Expect to see talented florists, photographers, bakers, videographers, venue stylists and more. We’ve gathered caterers to help us create the ultimate guide to wedding catering with everything from canapés, traditional wedding breakfasts, barbecues, food trucks and mobile bars –you’ll find something to match your special day and keep loved ones from going hungry. We also have a feature dedicated to helping brides-to-be look and feel their best. Here you’ll find make-up artists, hairstylists, bridal boutiques and jewellers. That’s all from me! I hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as I‘ve loved putting it together.

Here’s to another year of fabulous weddings!

Rustic romance

Sophie and Steve’s stunning wedding took place at The Old Milking Parlour at Cavokay House Images courtesy of Sophie Wheeler Photography

After Sophie moved to North Dorset in 2015, her friend introduced her to Steve on a night out. After messaging via social media for a few months, they finally had their first date on Christmas Eve. Sophie thought Steve was charming, generous and patient – it was no surprise when they started dating.

Steve proposed in front of the Christmas tree at home three years later, which was perfect timing as Sophie loves the festive season and it was their third anniversary!

SETTING THE SCENE

From day one of planning the wedding, the couple fell in love with the rustic spaces at The Old Milking Parlour at Cavokay House. The team allowed the couple to decorate the spaces as they pleased, and make the most of the lawn area with games. The woodland provided an incredible backdrop to couple shots, and the wooden door in the heart of the woods is something out of a fairytale!

A Campervan called Lily transported Sophie and her two bridesmaids on the wedding day. The couple has used the Campervan twice; the first time was when they legally tied the knot at their local church in 2021. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the couple only had 15 guests and decided to plan another wedding with all their loved ones the following year.

The couple were lucky enough to win their wedding favours in a competition hosted by BLOOM Gin, which was dedicated to couples whose wedding plans were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Each guest received a miniature bottle of the company’s gin.

To highlight their love of gin even more, the pair also used a wooden ladder to display gin bottles for their table plan. The bride used parcel labels and vellum around the neck of the bottles to show where each guest was sitting. There were also bottles in the windows to represent loved ones no longer here; Harrison gin was dedicated to Sophie’s late Grandpa.

For the centrepieces, the couple used gin bottles on mirror plates with fairylights inside and flowers in recycled jars decorated with twine, hessian, wooden hearts and ribbon to emphasise the rustic theme. The bride says, “It was satisfying to see all the little details coming together on the day, from the menus to the unplugged ceremony chalkboard – all our efforts paid off in the end.”

Outside, the bride wrapped twine around the trees and hung photos of the couple over the years using wooden pegs.

Dried flowers were featured throughout the day with pampas grass, poppy heads and bunny tails. A stunning garland made by Pamplemousse Dorset was draped on top of the welcoming sign, and there was also a garland for the top table made by Olive and the Bumblebee while the bride’s bouquet came from MUD Urban Flowers.

The couple’s two-tiered cake was made by a friend called Mike who has a lifelong love for baking. The bottom tier was chocolate Guinness flavoured, while the top tier was lemon and elderflower. The bake was covered in cream cheese frosting and was decorated with dried flowers. There were two small cat figurines dedicated to the pair’s furry friends, Benji and Luci, which sat on either side of the cake on the cake swing provided by the venue.

The couple chose Victoria O’Brien for their catering needs; she provided a gorgeous roast chicken supreme with all the trimmings. Her cauliflower cheese was a huge hit as were the pigs in blankets! Victoria’s famous and incredible Biscoff cheesecake followed for dessert. For the evening, Victoria

29 REAL WEDDINGS

displayed a beautiful grazing table packed with meats, cheeses and other delicious snacks.

LOOKING THE PART

With a fondness for Disney, Sophie picked a gown with Cinderella vibes and added tulle sleeves for the perfect finishing touch. She wore a cathedral-length veil embroidered with Roman numerals by Tessa’s Tiaras. The pair’s original wedding date, the legal ceremony date and the long-awaited big day was added at the bottom of the veil.

Steve wore a Ted Baker navy suit with a swordfishes lining. He stood out from the groomsmen, who wore dark navy suits, by wearing an ivory tie and a large buttonhole. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in pale pink dresses that matched the colour scheme perfectly.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

To keep guests entertained, the couple hired Big Brass SKA. Sophie says, “Everyone was up on their feet dancing the night away to hits by Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners and so much more. The venue’s team said it was the most packed dancefloor they’d ever had.”

A big hit with loved ones was the photo booth provided by Pikabooth, which came with high-quality props and provided great fun for all ages.

The adult bouncy castle created many photographic opportunities and allowed guests to let their hair down and have extra fun.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The pair couldn’t have been more grateful to finally celebrate with loved ones after postponing their day. The bride says, “With Covid-19 restrictions, it felt like we were never going to get the big day we deserved. We both felt a huge sense of relief that the day finally came, we appreciated every moment even more after waiting so long.”

With help from Olivia Coleman Celebrant, the couple created a tailor-made ceremony full of personal touches. They’ll always treasure the moment they shared their vows, which were full of meaningful and heart-warming words. A reading from Winnie-the-Pooh was read by a loved one and had the bride in tears – it was such a special moment.

The best man’s speech was 20 minutes long and was hysterical; some said it was the best speech they’d ever heard.

Another funny moment was when Steve brought a bib for the wedding breakfast because he knew Sophie would spill food down herself!

HONEYMOON

The lovebirds went to Cancún in Mexico for 14 nights, which was pure bliss! Sophie says, “We did some amazing excursions such as Xcaret Park and visited one of the new seven wonders of the world – Chichen Itza. We relaxed by the pool, drank cocktails and enjoyed plenty of food as our resort had several speciality restaurants.

Charlotte and Ben’s rustic-styled wedding had a Lord of the Rings theme Images courtesy of Emma Moore Photography

Charlotte and Ben met on a dating app, and their sense of humour first attracted them to each other. The bride’s strapline was ‘looking for a gladiator’, and Ben’s opening line was ‘will a spartan do?’ It’s safe to say they were the perfect match and ended up dating.

In 2019, Ben proposed during a weekend away to Ilfracombe with their dog Max. On the last night of the trip, they had a lovely shellfish dinner before taking a stroll along the pier during a gorgeous sunset. Charlotte says, “It’s funny because I thought this would be a perfect time for Ben to propose, but there’s no way he’d be that organised.” She continues, “But then Ben set his camera on the floor to take a video, which I thought was strange as I normally take the pictures. He started to look at me and gigged, by which point I knew what was coming.” Ben recited a few lines from the Lord of the Rings, Charlotte’s favourite film, and proposed with a replica of the Evenstar necklace as a placeholder ring until they picked one together.

Here Charlotte shares details about their special day…

35 REAL WEDDINGS

We wanted plenty of flowers and opted for wild cottage-style blooms to match our venue.

We had rustic touches like barrels, apple crates, hay bales, bunting, oldstyle suitcases, wicker hampers and a few Lord of the Rings signs around the property.

Ben wore a tweed suit in sage green with brown boots, a pink bow tie and a flower pocket square. As he always calls me his little sunflower, he also wore sunflower cufflinks to finish off his look. My stunning Martina Liana gown featured off-the-shoulder sleeves and a boho style.
36
The Great Barn in Titchfield was the perfect wedding venue! We loved the rustic style and blank canvas space that allowed us to bring our vision to life.

Our two-tiered cake had hummingbird, chocolate and Biscoff flavours.

The day was so surreal as we had to postpone our day twice due to Covid-19. We were both so excited that the day was finally happening!

We named the tables after characters from the Lord of the Rings Ben and I have enjoyed many camping holidays in his Campervan, so it was nice to travel in an old-style VW Campervan on the day. Our favours were charity tokens from Victoria’s Promise, an organisation close to our hearts.
37 REAL WEDDINGS
Catering was a big part of our day as we’re both big foodies! We had a hog roast during the day and offered Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the evening, which was a big hit with guests.

The groomsmen wore the same attire as Ben but with pink ties to allow the groom to stand out.

As my sister was eight months pregnant, I picked simple flowy dresses for the bridesmaids to ensure she was comfortable.

Our DJ was fantastic on the day! He kept the day flowing and played great music in the evening to keep guests entertained. He also brought some advice cards, which were read out before we cut the cake.

Ben’s two younger brothers were the best men; they performed an excellent double act for their speech, which had everyone laughing and crying.

The day was full of memorable moments, but the speeches were particularly special – especially my dad’s.

Mauritius was the perfect destination for our honeymoon. We explored the beautiful island, tried the local rum, relaxed and went swimming with turtles and dolphins.

Nicky and Rich’s bohostyled wedding had festival

vibes

Images courtesy of Rachel Jane Photography

Nicky and Rich first met at Brockenhurst College while studying maths. The pair kept in touch and headed off to different universities before getting together several years later. “On our first date, we realised we got on really well and immediately felt a strong connection”, says Nicky. From there, the couple became closer and started dating.

Rich proposed the day before the couple’s fifth anniversary. During a four-week backpacking holiday through Peru and Bolivia, the couple set out for a four-day trek up to Machu Picchu. When they reached the first peak, they were taking fun photos on a timer while jumping in the air. On one of the jumps, Rich got down on one knee! Nicky says, “We timed the photo perfectly as it showed my shocked face; I was overcome with emotion and there were plenty of happy tears.” She continues, “It was an amazing moment with no one around except for some chickens.”

Here Nicky shares details about their special day…

41 REAL WEDDINGS

What’s not to love about Hale Park Weddings? The surroundings are stunning and we loved the venue’s flexibility. We could even camp in a nearby field and play music until the early hours of the morning.

We had beautiful flowers in rustic stone vases for the centrepieces.

After seeing Alice Dale perform at various pubs over the last six years, I was thrilled she said ‘yes’ to performing at our wedding and put a band together for us! They were the best band most of our guests had seen at a wedding.

We had natural free-flowing flowers with lots of eucalyptus – our florist got the blooms spot on!

We exchanged vows in the sweetest church on our venue’s stunning grounds.
42

We had a traditional cake with different flavours including fruit cake, strawberry and vanilla, Seville orange plus lemon and elderflower.

Old pallets with string and pegs made up our table plan. The tables were named after mountains we had trekked from Wales and the Lake District to Peru. Of course Machu Picchu was our top table!

We had a three-course wedding breakfast and the food was delicious! In the evening, guests enjoyed noodles in takeaway pots with chopsticks, which went down a treat.

I wore a simple fit-and-flare dress with a low back and V-neckline. I felt incredible on the day and just so excited to marry Rich!

The groom wore a navy three-piece suit from Cavendish Menswear with a sage green pocket square and tie.

I picked multiway dresses for my bridesmaids as the gowns could be styled to suit each person, which was important as I wanted everyone to be comfortable and feel amazing.

43 REAL WEDDINGS

Our venue was incredible, especially the venue’s wedding coordinator Danielle. Plus, the food was even better than we’d imagined!

Our photographer was amazing; it felt like our friend was taking the photos and we’re chuffed with the results.

Our first dance song was Send Me On My Way by Rusted Root, which went down a storm with guests! We picked this song because whenever we had a bad day, we would put this song on and dance in the kitchen!

The original concept for this stunning shoot was a collaboration between Emma Winters Photography and Lucy Farrant Photography as part of a series of styled shoots. The photographers took inspiration from the golden sandy beaches against the Dorset countryside, where coastal chic meets rustic charm. Emma-Louise Winters says, “Having both lived by the coast our entire lives, we were keen to utilise our gorgeous local beaches. We aimed to create aesthetically and visually decadent imagery while ensuring that the couple’s look would translate into a real wedding. Here at Your Hampshire and Dorset Wedding, we love this stunning shoot influenced by the popular Netflix series, Bridgerton After being inspired by the wedding scene in season two, shoot coordinator and wedding planner Holly Annetts at Entwine Wedding Planning brought together a team of local suppliers to create this traditional and romantic shoot. The talented team used a white and green colour scheme with touches of lilac to perfectly complement the theme.

FOOD FOOD glorious

The ultimate A to Z guide to wedding catering

Finding the perfect catering company is essential to creating wow factor weddings. Food brings people together and it’s something your loved ones will remember long after the special day. That’s why we’ve created the ultimate guide from sweet treats, traditional delights and alternative options – thank us later!

IS FOR AFTERNOON TEA

IS FOR BARBECUE

Sure to please, a barbecue is the ideal fit for a summer wedding. It’s simple to cater for all tastes and dietary needs, plus the theatre of the food cooking amongst you creates a wonderful atmosphere.

IS FOR DOUGHNUTS

There’s a reason doughnut walls have been so popular over the last few years. The wall not only looks great but will be a hit with adults and kids alike.

IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT

B C D E

Combine catering and entertainment for the ultimate wow factor wedding. Molecular Magic Creative Catering Ltd is a family-run business that started trading in 2015. The team works hard to create bespoke packages for weddings; they can offer a traditional service or a more theatrical style for memorable experiences. Using the finest and locally sourced produce from the team’s tried and tested local suppliers, the multi-awardwinning company offers exceptional quality food that’s expertly prepared. All members are highly trained, professional with a friendly approach and love bringing the magic to events.

IS FOR GRAZING

Serving up an afternoon tea after the ceremony is the perfect addition to weddings. There’s something for everyone from sandwiches, scones, cakes and other sweet treats.

IS FOR COMMUNITY

Why not book a company that gives back to the community? Munch is a family firm with five decades of experience running events. The company uses 100 per cent of profits to fund workshops to teach kids how to cook. The team specialises in building a food offering around your day. They’ve made classical fine dining wedding breakfasts with three courses, amuse-bouche and burritos served from a van. The team will always be transparent about their costs and will work hard to ensure your wedding is extra special.

IS FOR FAVOURS

With many options available for favours, we’ve found that some of the most popular options incorporate treats. Why not opt for personalised sweets, biscuits, chocolate or perhaps mini bottles of your favourite tipple.

One trend that has kicked off over the last year is grazing platters. Based in the heart of Southampton, Gilberts is a bespoke catering company that provides quality catering for special occasions. The team specialises in bespoke grazing tables and afternoon teas that will wow guests. With more than 12 years’ experience working in prestigious hotels, Gilberts is based on quality produce and sourcing the best ingredients to create delicious feasts tailored to suit your requirements.

HIS FOR HOT CHOCOLATE

Why not warm up your guests with a hot chocolate station for those colder months? Take it to the next level with marshmallows, chocolate flakes, whipped cream and different flavoured syrups.

CATERING 57

IS FOR JARS OF SWEETS

Add an element of fun to your wedding with a sweet cart, which is perfect for those with a sweet tooth and will provide snacks throughout the reception! The station is perfect, especially if you have little ones on the day.

IS FOR ICE CREAM

Van, bike or trike: ice cream can be served at your wedding in a variety of quirky ways and will be most welcome on a hot day.

KIS FOR KNOWLEDGE

When it comes to picking the right suppliers for your day, it’s important to do your research once you’ve settled on a budget. Search for local companies while viewing both their website and social media pages, where you will be able to read reviews from newlyweds. Once you have narrowed down your search, contact the companies to arrange a phone call or in person meetings where you can discuss options for your day and any concerns.

L

IS FOR LATE

MThe wedding breakfast can end up being served quite late in the day by the time you’ve said “I do,” and popped off for your photographs. To prevent your loved ones flagging, ensure there are plenty of delicious canapés on hand for the drinks reception. A selection of five to six is a good guide and we love the idea of mini fish ‘n’ chip cones or warming bitesize pies for the winter.

IS FOR MOBILE BAR

The choices at weddings are practically endless, with more fun and fab ideas always cropping up. We love bars that serve speciality tipples for your post-vow reception. The Saddle Stop offers different packages to suit every couple as the team can offer a traditional bar or an alternative option like a gin or prosecco bar. Not only do the team offer services for weddings, but hen parties, afternoon teas and other special events in Dorset too!

Check out: www.instagram.com/the_saddle_stop_weymouth

IS FOR NO WASTAGE

Food wastage at weddings is a huge issue, check if your venue is signed up to a scheme such as Too Good To Go (https://toogoodtogo.org) that connects its app users to businesses that have surplus food, allowing it to be enjoyed rather than wasted. If not, you could consider donating any leftovers to the local food bank.

IS FOR PIZZA

Adults and children alike will love watching their food being prepared right before their eyes. A pizza truck is a perfect addition to evening receptions and stops guests from going hungry. Plus, who doesn’t love pizza?

O

IS FOR ORIGIN

Some venues grow their own herbs and vegetables and many caterers will support local farmers by using their produce. Serving locally-sourced food at your wedding not only adds to the ambience, but also supports the community, ensures quality and offers sustainability by reducing the miles it’s had to travel.

IS FOR QUICHE

Not everyone likes the same food and if you’re worried about guests disliking the menu options, why not opt for a modern buffet to allow everyone to pick their favourite dishes? Think street food stations, tapas, sausage sarnies and mini sliders.

IS FOR RAISE A GLASS

Ensure guests have a glass in hand to toast your nuptials. Try some local flavour by checking out your local vineyard, and who doesn’t love a pimp your prosecco station?

IS FOR TRADITIONAL

IS FOR SEASONAL

If you’re stuck for what to serve, tailoring your menu according to the season is always a lovely way to go. Think fresh flavours in the summer or warming comfort food for the winter. You could even offer Christmas pudding for dessert with gingerbread favours at your festive nuptials.

There’s a reason the classic three-course dining experience has been popular for decades, it not only sets an elegant feel but allows guests to mingle as they’re served all sorts of dishes and keeps everything on schedule.

IS FOR UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES

Whatever food option you go for, make it beautiful! Ceremony arches can be moved and utilised in your reception space – they provide a stylish backdrop for any food, dessert or cake table for example.

IS FOR VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN

The days of bland and uninspiring vegetarian and vegan food are long gone, thanks to fantastic companies like Vegan Magda. The team offers bespoke menus designed especially for your big day. From abundant sharing-style tables and canapés at drinks receptions to elegantly plated dishes, owner Magda Zuber can provide a style of food that will match your venue and personality. Creative and beautifully prepared vegetables will steal the hearts of your guests, and no one will realise that there was no meat at the tables. Book a free tasting session and experience food with genuine soul and heart, cooked by real hands with love.

IS YORKSHIRE PUDDING

The idea of a wedding carvery fills us with joy! Everyone will be delighted by a roast dinner and you also have that added element of interaction and entertainment as designated guests carve at the table in chef’s hat and pinny.

IS FOR WORLD CUISINE

Spice up your life with an exciting international menu. If you love overseas travel and want the all-important meal to reflect this, talk to your caterer about serving your favourite world cuisine. Your wedding will be the talk of the town!

IS X MARKS THE SPOT

Don’t forget to incorporate catering options into your RSVPs. Your caterer will need to know of any food intolerances or dietary requirements ahead of time when tailoring your menu.

IS FOR ZOOM

It’s important to meet with your wedding caterer ahead of time and work together to plan the perfect feast. Face-to-face meetings are great but if distance is an issue, most will offer a virtual catch up, so there’s no excuse!

TRIED AND TESTED

Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, making the appearance of those dreaded lines and wrinkles more pronounced. But RoC’s new Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer comes to the rescue with SPF 30 helping to restore skin’s natural moisture, visibly replumping lines and replenishing hydration. CWM editor Rachel Westall put it to the test.

“As a woman in my 30s, my skin is an area I need to pay attention to, and with RoC endorsed by one of my all-time fave gals, Sarah Jessica Parker, I was already sold! These winter months can be so harsh on your skin so this has been a welcome addition to my morning routine, keeping my face hydrated with a natural glow. It’s superlightweight so it’s easy to apply and leaves no residue behind, only soft smooth skin all day. I can’t wait to try the entire range.” £35.99, https://rocskincare.co.uk

The Jojoba Company, which grows the plant organically and filters it 14 times to ensure absolute purity, offers a range of products harnessing its benefits. If you’re keen to take a first foray into the world of jojoba skincare, we recommend trying the Australian Jojoba. The brand’s top seller it can be used on face, body and hair. However, the recently-launched Utan Pen makes this goal totally achievable with zero sun damage. Designed to create instant natural-looking freckles that develop to suit each individual skin tone, it has been compared to semi-permanent make-up. The brand’s founder and perfumer Romano Ricci says of the new scent, “It would take me more than a lifetime to explore the complexity of women! Since the beginning I’ve attempted to unravel, layer by layer, the facets of women with a capital W. With this latest opus, I wanted to unite them all. Sometimes femme fatale, sometimes romantic, sometimes boyish, Ego Straits embraces all those contradictions while blurring the lines.”

The truth ABOUT SUGAR

Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists

Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!

The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.

Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.

READ FOOD LABELS

To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or

switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.

CURB THE CRAVINGS

No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!

IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE

A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.

HEALTHY SUGARS

Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such

as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND

Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.

A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.

Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

Local professionals solve fashion and beauty concerns to get you big-day ready

THE DREAM TEAM

There are so many hair and make-up artists to pick from. How do I find the person that’s right for me?

When looking for a hair and make-up artist, check the company’s social media pages to ensure you like their work style. Do this with all suppliers to see which ones stand out to you most.

Next, contact the team to see how quickly they respond and if they call you personally for a quick chat to answer any further questions. Personal one-to-one conversations are great! Take time to speak about timings on the day, what happens if they’re ill, if they’ll travel on the day and any other concerns to give you a feel for their expertise.

Read the company’s reviews on Google and Facebook; these are from previous brides and cannot be removed.

Experience is the key! Look at how long the company has been in business for and check what wedding directories they’re affiliated with, awards they’ve won and what other suppliers recommend the team. Remember, you always pay for what you get. Someone who is cheaper usually is just starting out and has a limited portfolio – typically lots of photos of themselves with different make-up looks but not on brides.

Finally, have a make-up trial to meet the supplier. You must feel confident they’ll add a calming presence and laughter to your day, as it’s always great to have a fun morning! The supplier should be reassuring while going out of their way to ensure everyone looks and feels their best.

With 20 years of happy brides behind us, impeccable service, a genuine portfolio and many awards, we would love to bring your dream hair and make-up looks to life.

FINDING THE ONE

I’m nervous about my first bridal appointment. What can I expect?

Nearly all our brides are nervous about their first appointment, so you’re not alone! When looking for boutiques, have a little search on the shop’s website and social media pages before booking an appointment; this will give you insight into what each shop offers.

Don’t worry if you don’t know what styles you’re after, as it’s the consultant’s job to guide you through the process.

The most frequently asked question we get is about what to wear for an appointment. Pick underwear you feel most comfortable and secure in; if that means control shorts, wear them! It’s important you feel like yourself.

Your appointment should be fun and relaxed, just like our service. We will start with a drink and a chat to help ease any nerves before we get down to trying the dresses on.

WOW-FACTOR DRESSES

I’ve bought a dress with no embellishments, and now I’m worried it’s too plain. How can I add the wow-factor? Let’s start by saying you’ve not purchased a plain dress; you have picked a classic and elegant design for your big day that you felt confident and beautiful in.

We understand you may want to add some touches to give the gown some added wow factor, and there are plenty of ways to achieve this. Most boutiques will suggest a belt to add some sparkle, but here are our three top suggestions.

 Not every bride wants to wear a veil, but remember it doesn’t have to be the traditional type. One of our absolute favourites is the pearl bow veil handmade by Hayze Bridal. We guarantee your guests will comment on this striking piece!

 How about a colourful pair of shoes, maybe blue if you’re feeling daring? Or sparkly and strappy heels are always a winner.

 Add some large chandelier earrings or an oversized necklace for some added wow factor.

BIG-DAY BEAUTIFUL

How do I pick the best foundation to suit my skin? There are a few things to consider when looking for a foundation, such as your age if you have fine lines.

Slightly mature skin is much more suited to a lighter foundation with a hydrating formula. Steer clear of powder products, which will age the skin compared to giving a youthful glow when using hydrating liquid products.

Consider how much coverage you’re after and if you have any problem areas that need covering up. If so, my tip would be to colour-correct with a concealer and use as little product as needed rather than using a heavy foundation – this will create a more natural and glowing look overall.

The foundations that I love and use in my make-up kit are NARS Cosmetics Sheer Glow Foundation, Armani Power Fabric, Bobbi Brown Intensive Serum Foundation and MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation. An absolute must is to ensure that your foundation has a decent SPF all year round to protect you from sun damage. Olivia Sharp | Olivia Sharp Makeup Artist | www.oliviasharpmakeup.co.uk

WINTER WINDS

I’m looking for a dress that will keep me warm at our January wedding. Do you have any ideas of what I should look for?

You might want to wear something blue on your special day, but hopefully it won’t be your lip colour because you’re freezing! It will definitely show in photos if you’re uncomfortably cold on your wedding day. For extra warmth, consider wearing a dress with sleeves like this lace and tulle dress from Milla Nova, which is perfect for giving you some coverage.

If you’ve fall head over heels for a strapless gown, you could always choose to accessorise with a little faux fur wrap or cape, which gives a great second look and extra layers to keep warm. Or opt for long satin gloves for a modern but classic feel – think Nicola Peltz-Beckham vibes. Anneliese Ward | Chameleon Bride | www.chameleonbride.co.uk

LOCKS OF LOVE

How can I ensure my hair is in its best condition for my wedding day?

We usually carry out a full hair consultation three months before your wedding day during your hair trial appointment, but don’t leave it until then to get your barnet in its best condition! Here are our top tips for achieving healthy hair...

 Carry out regular hair treatments such as hair masks, which you can do in the comfort of your own home or have done professionally by your hairdresser. We love and recommend Redken’s Acidic Bonding Concentrate range.

 Have regular haircuts/trims! Don’t leave this too close to your wedding day in case your hairdresser gets scissor happy!

 Avoid high sun exposure, especially if you’re having a summer wedding to avoid dehydration, colour fade and frazzled ends.

 Consider taking a food supplement such as Hair Gain, which contains 10 essential vitamins to maintain healthy hair growth.

 Consult an experienced colourist if you want to change your hair colour, but don’t experiment too close to the wedding day.

HEAVEN SCENT

I’m looking for the perfect perfume for my wedding day. Do you have any suggestions on where to start?

When it comes to planning your special day, selecting your ideal wedding perfume will not only complete your outfit, it will also remind you of the big day for years to come. Scents are renowned for triggering memories, so what better way to remember your momentous and unforgettable occasion than through a new scent for your big day?

You can, of course, choose whichever fragrance you love. But I’d recommend trying a completely new discovery, something you’ve never worn before. This ensures it has no relation to any previous memory and means the new scent will always transport you back to your wedding.

You’ll also want a fragrance that will last throughout the day, so opt for an eau de parfum, which has a higher concentration of fragrance oil (around 25 per cent), which typically makes them stronger and longer lasting. Also, look for such notes as patchouli, white musk, sandalwood, tuberose, vetiver, and freesia as these linger on the skin for longer.

Check out Lancôme La Via Est Belle, Barbour Female, Carolina Herrera Good Girl Supreme, Jennifer Lopez Promise, Ghost Orb Of Night and Estée Lauder Beautiful – all great bridal fragrances. Alternatively, if you’re struggling to find the perfect scent match, flirt before you buy with The Fragrance Shop scentaddict subscription, and choose a new 8ml fragrance each month for £12. They’re also perfect to carry with you on the big day.  Hollie Race, The Fragrance Shop | www.thefragranceshop.co.uk

A POP OF COLOUR

We’re having a colourful wedding and I want to add some fun to my look with accessories. What would you suggest?

A simple dress gives you the freedom to add personality and colour to your outfit with jewellery. Long statement earrings or a coloured gemstone necklace will add character and flair. Our brides appreciate the sentiment of certain jewellery that incorporates their birthstone or their partner’s. We carry a collection of birthstone jewellery that can be worn together on the big day and are easy to wear daily after the wedding. Some bright jewellery paired with a feature headpiece or veil can make the outfit memorable.

ALL ABOUT THAT BASE

How do I get my skin looking its best in the run-up to my big day, and what products do you recommend for a flawless base?

Begin preparing the skin at least two weeks before your make-up trial. Start cleansing your face with a gentle creamy cleanser such as BYBI’s Milk Melt or Garnier’s Micellar Water Facial Cleanser in the mornings and evenings.

Always aim to exfoliate twice a week. Often dead skin builds and is usually mistaken as dry skin and can cause make-up to appear patchy – I recommend the Lotus Scrub by AlumierMD. Aim to incorporate a serum, such as The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Boost Instant Smoother or the Zo Skin Health Growth Factor Serum. This should be dotted onto the skin lightly with your fingertips. Once a serum is regularly included in a skincare routine, your moisturiser will absorb much quicker. I recommend using AlumierMD Sheer Hydration SPF 40 all year round followed by a primer such as Trinny London Miracle Blur.

Always use a separate eye cream. The AlumierMD AluminEye is perfect for reducing dark areas and works well under make-up. Use a daily lip balm such as Albus & Flora’s Mountain Rose for a soft pink tint to the lips.  Professional facials or even massages shouldn’t be booked in the two weeks leading up to the wedding or make-up trial to avoid drawing out too many toxins.

Finally, never underestimate the benefits of drinking plenty of water as it makes such a difference to the skin, as does cutting down on your salt intake. It’s never too early or too late to start looking after your skin.

FREE FROM FRIZZ

What is the most effective way to reduce frizz? The first thing to remember is flyaways are different to frizz! Everyone will naturally have a few because of regrowth. Flyaways are mainly caused by hair breakage and to help prevent this, use a good brush to release any knots before you wash it. Once washed, use a comb to style your hair before using a hair dryer. Avoid using a hairbrush on wet hair as it’s so much weaker and also ensure your hair is dry before sleeping. If you wear your hair in a bun or a ponytail, use a hair scrunchie instead of a band to put less pressure on your hair.

Frizz often means you have a natural curl pattern; try looking into the curly girl method to enhance your curls or waves. Use a co-wash conditioner and a Denman D3 brush to define those wet curls, then add curl cream and a mousse before using a low-energy setting on your diffuser to gently dry your hair.

Hair that’s very dry or damaged can also cause frizz. Use a hair mask weekly if this sounds like you – I love the Living Proof Triple Bond Complex. Argan oil and black seed oil are the best options for adding shine and nourishment to hair. Apply through the lengths of your hair and leave for more than two hours before washing. It’s even better to wait overnight; remember to pop a shower cap on to protect your bedding! Another forever staple in my kit is the Moroccanoil Treatment, a small amount smoothed through your ends after styling works a treat.

Another contributor to damaged hair is the excessive use of hair tools. So set the tools to 180 degrees so it’s not too hot and keep your hair dryer setting to a medium heat – ensure you’re always using a heat protectant spray or serum.

If you see frizz through your ends, trust your hairdresser to trim away as much as needed so your hair looks healthier and thicker.

PLANNING SOS

I’m feeling stressed and overwhelmed by the planning process. What are your top tips for creating a stress-free wedding?

Most couples can feel these emotions when planning their wedding; so here are two helpful key points to focus on!

Concentrate on what makes you both happy when planning the wedding, and remember the day is for you both to enjoy. Take time away from everyone else during the wedding to reflect on the special

THROUGH THE LENS

We’re not the best posers, but we would love a few snaps in the venue’s wintry grounds. What should we do?

Finding a photographer you feel comfortable around on your wedding day is essential. If you’re super relaxed in front of the camera or are looking for natural-style photos, then search for photographers with that type of style.

moments together.

Try to be organised by making a list, setting up a joint email or even creating a spreadsheet to stay on track. It never hurts to have another set of eyes check everything, so ask for help from a professional, a friend or a family member. Let them see your list to double-check you’ve covered everything.

CAPTURING MEMORIES

We’re considering booking a videographer for our wedding; do you have any tips when searching for a company?

A videographer can help capture special memories on the day, so picking the right company is essential. Here are my tips to help you find the perfect videographer for your wedding. 

Look for a company that has experience shooting weddings; this will ensure they know how to capture the important moments and tell the story of your special day.  Check out the videographer’s portfolio to see if their editing style aligns with what you’re after. 

Ask for a consultation with prospective suppliers and ask plenty of questions to help put your mind at ease. You’ll also see how well you connect with each photographer, which is essential as they’ll be with you throughout the day. It’s important to have a fun and light-hearted relationship, which is something I have with my couples. I discuss and establish how intimate clients what this to be during their engagement session, which I include in my wedding packages.

Most of what I do is natural but directed to ensure my couples don’t feel awkward in front of the camera – this allows me to capture authentic, beautiful moments.

Nikki Legg | Nikki Legg Photography www.nikkileggphotography.co.uk

Read reviews from previous clients to get an idea of the supplier’s quality of work and customer service.  Discuss your vision for the video with the company. Ensure they understand what you’re looking for and that they can deliver on your expectations.  Set a budget for the videographer and discuss pricing upfront. Ensure you understand what’s included in the price and any additional costs that may be added.

MUM’S THE WORD

My mum is looking for an outfit for our winter wedding, what’s stylish and will keep her warm?

DREAM-WORTHY ATTIRE

We’re searching for the perfect pageboy outfit for our winter wedding; what would you suggest?

When picking an outfit, always consider if your pageboy will be warm enough during the ceremony and when photographs are taken.

Fabrics that are perfect for the winter season are cotton velvet or even a high-quality wool that would be excellent for regulating the pageboy’s temperature without looking too bulky. Ensure the garments are silk lined to avoid itchy skin irritations.

www.veni-infantino.com

Dressing for a winter wedding can be a more challenging compared to spring/summer weddings, but you can still look stylish and keep warm. We can experience some freezing weather, so opt for thermal undergarments which are available in various shades and styles. Thanks to the different thicknesses available, the pieces can be worn underneath your outfit without becoming too tight and uncomfortable. Once the formal proceeding is finished, you’ll inevitably go to a heated venue – even garden marquees can have heating provided. If you’re worried that you’ll be too hot for the reception, a quick change at the venue is easily done.

If you’re looking for something different, why not consider a bespoke military-style jacket teamed up with a pair of long trousers? For a more traditional look, opt for a gorgeous waistcoat with long trousers, a pair of braces and a tie/bow tie that matches the groom or bridesmaids.

www.kateizakphotography.com

Finally, why not finish off the look with a matching suit jacket? Consider a vintage-inspired edge-to-edge jacket, which has less bulk around the neck area but still looks stunning?

THE PERFECT SETTING

We’re just starting our big day journey; what should we look for when booking a venue?

If you’re considering a venue not close to home, check if the property has accommodation for your guests and even yourself if you need to stay the night before the big day. If not, ask the venue for a list of recommended accommodations nearby and if they offer discounted rates for your guests.

Some venues will have a minimum amount of guests needed, which is difficult if you have limited numbers. A better option would then be to find a flexible property with a minimum spend regardless of numbers.

Ask for a full breakdown of what’s included in the price so there are no unexpected additional fees at a later date! Packages with supplier services included can save you so much time and make your planning process less stressful.

Consider the type of cuisine you’d like to offer and see what venue caterers provide this. Check to see if you can have a menu tasting session to preview what will be offered on the day.

It’s essential to check if you’re held to the venue’s suppliers or if you may enlist your own. Some venues have a list of recommended suppliers that are often familiar with the property – they’ll know what works well and are the most reliable.

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

If you’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

86

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day.

You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view. We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.

This sanctuary nestled in a peaceful location on the banks of the River Thames is ideal for honeymooners, and their four-legged friends and children are also welcome for those wanting to book a family-moon. The tranquil, back-to-nature bolthole, a former Elizabethan coaching inn has some famous neighbours – Hollywood movie star George Clooney and wife Amal live in this quaint village tucked away in the Berkshire countryside.

DO NOT DISTURB

There are 49 individually designed rooms and suites with The Coach House Apartment located in the courtyard being the hotel’s best offering for newlyweds which became my home-from-home for the night. It’s a quirky split-level suite with a separate TV room that doubles up as a second bedroom, perfect if it is a family-moon you’re after. A highlight for me was the large roll-top bath – I dived straight in!

A FOODIE HEAVEN

At the heart of this boutique hotel is the swish Coppa Club clubhouse. The brand is well-known for providing the very best elements of a café, bar, restaurant and lounge all combined into one setting with a private members club feel, without the fee. Those passionate about food will love the extensive menus including the all-day, weekend and non-gluten offerings plus grills, grazing plates and sourdough pizzas - a takeaway menu is also offered. Being practically vegan, I tucked into the mouth-watering Coppa burger made with a delicious plant-based patty and cheese served with skinny fries. Other highlights on the menu were the chalkstream trout and the 10oz rib British steak on the bone. The buckwheat and rye pancakes were the perfect way to start my day the following morning at breakfast.

WHAT’S NEW?

The latest addition are the cosy igloos perched outside the large impressive glass-covered terrace lining the garden leading to the river. The best seat in the house, they provide private dining all year round for up to eight people and there are even blankets provided for the chilly evenings.
