SHINY AND NEW

Natalie Towell, owner of Navette Jewellery in Ashford has been hard at work on a new bridal collection – Nelina. Inspired by vintage lace, the range of pieces depicts delicacy and romance infused with soft feminine charm. Discreetly complementing the bride, pearls drop down from the signature motif stationed along sections of a delicate chain, which is available to order in all colours of 9ct or 18ct gold. From mid-February 2023 the collection will be expanded to include a selection of matching earrings so do keep an eye out for those.

There’s still more though, so time for the gents to look in. Natalie is also ready to launch a ring for grooms who wish for something more dynamic and edgy. This wedding ring is a fusion of the historical signet ring, which in the 14th century was worn as a betrothal band, with a modern wedding band to create a uniquely masculine and on-trend ring. Also available to order in all colours of 9ct or 18ct gold, as well as platinum, to suit your style, you have the option to have the groove darkened too.

RECOGNITION FOR ROCHESTER

Wedding bells rang for The Rochester Corn Exchange after the historical 18th-century venue won acclaim at the South East Regional Finals of the Wedding Industry Awards. It was the first time the building had entered the prestigious UK-wide awards, voted on by a panel of judges and recommendations from couples who had previously booked the venue. The team attended the gala awards evening at The Ravenswood, West Sussex, proudly coming away with a highly commended in the historical venues category.

As you exchange your vows in The Corn Exchange you’ll be standing in a place with centuries of tradition, making it the perfect romantic backdrop for a wedding ceremony, function or evening celebrations. The luxurious, Grade I listed building was constructed in 1706 by the rather splendidly named Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovel, whose coat of arms can be seen above the High Street entrance. It has since enjoyed a rich, varied history as a butcher’s market, a courtroom, a concert hall and a cinema. But for the past 100 years it has functioned as a wonderful venue for weddings and events offering couples the flexibility they desire for the dream day.

WINE AND DINE

Gusbourne, near Ashford, is one of the UK’s most successful English wine producers receiving acclaim for its award-winning sparkling wines and exceptional visitor experience. Founded in 2004, Gusbourne produces a range of sparkling and still wines from grapes grown at its vineyards in Kent and West Sussex. Its sparkling wines are well known, but it’s also growing its reputation for great still wines, and is soon to launch its first 100 per cent Pino Meunier.

The vineyard in Appledore, Kent, is home to The Nest tasting room, and it’s here editor Kelly visited one particularly dark, dank and dreary afternoon. She says, “Located in a beautiful spot The Nest at once feels welcoming and oh-so modern. We were warmly greeted and shown to our seats on the ground floor for our Sparkling Tasting Flight, accompanied by a plate of absolutely delicious local crackers and cheese. Here, mum and I spent an incredibly enjoyable hour sampling the vineyard’s delightful produce, and being educated on how each came about along with how to pair them.

“English sparkling wine is experiencing a heyday at the moment, with plenty of domestic producers giving the Champagne region a run for it’s money. With delightful sparkling wines like Gusbourne’s it’s very easy to see why. It’s so difficult to pick a favourite as it feels like this would be doing the wines I didn’t pick an injustice, so I’d definitely recommend booking this wine flight for yourself to see which would work best with your wedding breakfast.

“After the wine flight we headed upstairs for a Wine Lunch, which gave us a good idea of what wines complement various courses, meats, fish and so on. We started out with an aperitif of the Brut Reserve, which would be the ideal glass of bubbly to serve at a wedding drinks reception. Fine and delicate it’s bursting with orchard fruit notes, perfect for summer nuptials. It’s also worth mentioning the lovely 2018 Rosé here, which we sampled on the wine flight – an English summer’s day in a glass it boasts a fresh palate dominated by red cherry, ripe strawberry and raspberry.

“The incredible starter of spiced venison carpaccio, roasted beetroot, parsnip puree, sweet pickled onion, cheese, watercress and parsley emulsion was served with the Blanc de Noir. It’s a generous wine on the palate with notes of redcurrant, raspberry and red cherry, with floral hints of rose and jasmine. It worked beautifully with the gamey flavour of the venison. Main course was fish, a pan-roasted stone bass with butter beans, lemon, dill and sorrel, crispy pancetta, spinach, roasted cauliflower, toasted hazelnuts, golden raisins soaked in Gusbourne verjus and sea herbs. Again, every mouthful was perfect and we were treated to a glass of Blanc de Blanc along with one of the still wines, Chardonnay Guinevere. The citrus nature of both suited the delicate flavour of the fish beautifully. The meal was rounded off with a dark chocolate and sea salt tart, torched fig, Gusbourne honey and orange gel, vanilla whipped mascarpone, crushed pistachio and orange tuile.”

Home is where the heart is

Jojo and Findley said “I do” on 2nd July, 2022, and based their theme on a dreamy English meadow Images courtesy of Alex Tenters Photography

30

Jojo

met Findley met while studying at the same college at university. “We started hanging out by osmosis really as we shared a mutual friend. A few nights out later and we were seeing each other. We called it official in October 2012, so 2022 marked our 10-year anniversary.”

Findley proposed at the top of The Old Man of Coniston in the Lake District. They paced it up the peak on an unmarked trail in record time partly because they had an early dinner reservation and partly because they knew they had a small window of opportunity with regards the weather. When they reached the top the clouds parted and the sun beamed down, that’s when Findley got down on one knee and asked Jojo to marry him.

Jojo’s parents have lived in a farmhouse in Lamberhurst since 1997, which is where she grew up. Overlooking Lamberhurst Vineyard with beautiful views of the valley and village, it sits in a stunning location. “We’ve always hosted parties there, with a big, well-tended garden, it makes the perfect venue. I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else,” Jojo tells us. So, it was there the couple said “I do” in the open air on the most beautiful of summer days, in the meadow at the bottom of the garden. They had a drinks reception with jazz beneath the oak trees and dancing later in the marquee. Join us as the bride tells us more...

SETTING THE SCENE

The pair opted for a Midsummer Night’s Dream vibe, with a soft English countryside feel where a long grassy meadow meets classic romance. The palette was made up of sage green, dusky pink and cream.

Working with florist Amelia Florence, Jojo and Findley set the scene beautifully for their ceremony with an extraordinary moon arch at the altar and meadow florals lining the aisle for the bride’s whistful entrance. The couple chose centrepieces that were a combination of boxes filled with the same meadowy florals as the ceremony, and simpler bud vases, dotted along the length of the long trestle tables. Amelia also created a stunning installation hanging above the middle trestle table, which was the marquee’s main centrepiece. “I absolutely adored our flowers and was incredibly excited to work with Amelia on them,” Jojo shares. “She got the vision right away. We were getting married in a field of long grass peppered with wild flowers, so we wanted to make the arrangements equally dreamy. The feature blooms were roses and pampas grass, with lots of long and feathery dark and light green foliage, as well as other blooms in blush pink and cappuccino.”

One of the best men, George, makes novelty, interestingly-shaped cakes. In fact, he’s well-known for making a hyper-realistic overfilled ashtray from cake. “He’s an artist, and asked to do our cake, which we knew would be a fun statement,” Jojo shares. “We went through a few different ideas together including a fully-working train moving around a mountain to all of the places Findley and I have ever visited together. Eventually though, we settled on a hyper-real suckling pig. Needless to say it divided opinion. I think a fair few attendees were horrified by it!”

The place names were simple and elegant white cards with a strip of gold at one end, wrapped in blush pink cotton twine, along with a sprig of Rosemary in memory of the bride’s late granny whose name was Rosemary.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The bride and groom worked with Sarah from Amuse Catering on their wedding breakfast. “We didn’t want anything too formal,” Jojo says. “Food is a huge part of our life and our relationship, so we wanted it to feel casual and communal.” The pair opted for canapés at the drinks reception with platter food served along the middle of each trestle table for the wedding breakfast. These included pork rack with crackling and salsa verde, roasted salmon with sauce gribiche, caponata, garlic potatoes, tenderstem broccoli with pine nuts, and rocket, pea and parmesan salad. In Jojo’s words, it was “sublime.”

Dessert was a trio of sweet treats including a pastel de nata, a mini pavlova and a chocolate brownie. Later in the night a cheeseboard was brought out and included some of the couple’s favourite cheeses: Lord London, Morbier and black bomber to name a few.

LOOKING THE PART

Jojo wore a dreamy, ruffle-skirted Stella York gown with a simple white top. “I loved the idea of wearing a full skirt and wanted to have fun wearing it, which I totally did,” the bride shares. She then changed into a slinky, long, white, plunge-neck dress ready to hit the dancefloor later in the evening.

Jojo accessorised classically with three roses in her half up/ half down hairstyle, along with a short custom-made veil with satin trim.

Findley wore a pale blue cotton suit with his favourite Hermes tie, which is yellow with pineapples on it. He gave his groomsmen a broad brief of a blue suit, as he didn’t like the idea of having to ask them to buy a new suit especially for the wedding. So, the gents were dressed in a myriad of blue hues.

Jojo had never envisioned her bridesmaids wearing the same dress or even the same colour. So, along with her maid-ofhonour she started to pull a few of the colours from the floral arrangements such as sage, pale pink, and warm caramel. They found a selection of slinky long dresses on ASOS that fit the bill and Jojo set about ordering a variety. “We had a really fun day at my flat where the girls tried them on, switched them around and discussed their opinions. I absolutely adored the final selection and every bridesmaid looked stunning,” Jojo remembers.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

As the whole day took place at the bride’s parents’ house, the couple had maximum flexibility on entertainment, and made the most of it. As guests arrived a pianist played a range of pop covers and wedding favourites. As Jojo walked down the aisle opera singer Alex performed a beautiful rendition of Handel’s Ombra Mai Fu, from Serse

Later, during the drinks reception a guitarist and saxophonist from the couple’s wedding band, performed a jazz set. Then the main event, the complete cohort of Soho: City Collective played during the evening. “They were literally unreal. I wasn’t off the dancefloor all night,” the bride remembers. “We did our first dance to Paris Hilton’s Stars Are Blind. The crowd genuinely couldn’t quite believe their ears, but then started loving it! The lead singer of the band said it was the best first dance she’d seen!”

REAL WEDDINGS 33

THE GETAWAY

The newlyweds spent two weeks in Thailand on honeymoon. It’s Findley’s favourite place in the world having lived there for while as a teenager. And although he often visits friends there and Jojo too has been on holiday there, the two had never been together so it felt right.

The groom planned the whole trip meticulously, making sure no moment, no meal was wasted. The couple spent a few nights in Bangkok before flying north to Chaing Rai, where they stayed on the border of Laos and Myanmar. There they went elephant trekking, “Which was unbelievable,” Jojo remembers. After that, they rented a car and drove back down to Chaing Mai, seeing the country by road as they went. Along the way they were able to stop at a few roadside dining spots that Findley had researched via the YouTubers he’s followed keenly for a few years. After exploring the city and visiting temples they headed back to Bangkok on an overnight train, which was a first for Jojo. “We had our own compartment, so we got some takeaway noodles and drinks, and whiled away the hours watching downloads on iPlayer. It was super-special.” Last on the itinerary was flying south to Koh Samui for a few beach days.

A dream is a wish your heart makes

Madeleine and Ray chose Kent’s very own fairytale location, Lympne Castle, to host their Disney-themed day Images

Madeleine and Ray met through Tinder, but their first date didn’t get off to the best start. It was a dark, rainy night and Madeleine was half an hour late. They hadn’t booked anywhere to eat, but together they settled on somewhere and once in the warm and able to see each other properly for the first time, the evening started to improve. “I thought Ray was very handsome and was attracted to his amazing big smile. He’s also an excellent conversationalist and really interesting. We had a great evening and I knew then that he was the one,” Madeleine shares.

On the final day of a wonderful, romantic week away in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the couple decided to visit Ljubljana Castle. As they walked along the castle walls on that sunny morning, admiring the beautiful views, Ray got down on one knee to propose. Madeleine remembers, “I was so happy and of course said, ‘Yes.’ I was also super-proud of him for picking out such a beautiful ring. It was such a special day and also happened to be Valentine’s Day.”

Madeleine had long dreamed of getting married in a castle and Lympne Castle was the first venue she and Ray viewed. “We knew straight away it was the one,” she tells us. “It has a fairytale feeling about it. The grounds are stunning and the views are spectacular. We’re so glad we chose it, it was the perfect setting for our big day.”

BE OUR GUEST

I love Disney and wanted to incorporate it into our wedding, so I decided to have each table represent a different Disney story. I found a supplier who custom-made fairylight jam jars depicting various Disney themes and the tables were Winnie-the-Pooh, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Bambi and Tinkerbell. For each table I sat the jars on a circular glass stand and alongside them I added an accessory. These included a ‘Hunny’ pot and chocolate bee for Winnie-the-Pooh, and for the wedding favours jars of miniature honey with customised stickers reading, ‘A sweet thank you,’ along with the wedding date. Beauty and the Beast was accessorised with rose petals and my bridesmaid, Katie, made sponge cakes with grey icing for the wedding favours. I added customised stickers to these too, which read, ‘Try the grey stuff, it’s delicious.’ Ray and I chose to have our own sweetheart table for the wedding breakfast. We had the Tinkerbell theme and accessorised it with little jars of fairy dust, along with jars of sherbet.

The place names were cards depicting the Disney Castle. Similarly, we used a Disney-themed baby pink table plan.

We had a massive statement flower chandelier in the middle of the wedding breakfast room. It looked fabulous and added a lovely floral touch.

We had a naked cake with a different flavour per tier: vanilla, chocolate, and salted caramel. It was decorated with flowers, fruits and berries. Not only did it look beautiful, it tasted delicious!

“When I saw Madeleine during the ceremony, her beauty overwhelmed me. Afterwards, I felt relaxed and really enjoyed the rest of the day. We had the best time.” – Ray
38

We were able to pick three options from the caterer’s menu per course. For starter guests could opt for smoked salmon, pork belly or tomato soup. For the main, there was chicken, beef or sea bass. And for dessert, they could select either chocolate mousse, sticky toffee pudding or lemon tart. The food was amazing and everyone was super-impressed, including us!

LOOKING THE PART

I wore Meadow by Madi Lane in ivory mocha. I love the 3D floral lace detail and key-hole back, and the sleeves give it a really elegant look. It was also comfortable to wear. Instead of a veil I decided to wear a flower crown created by White &Winsome. It was exactly what I was after: colourful and comfortable – it stayed on all day. My bouquet was vibrant, colourful and beautiful, made up of wildflowers and vuvuzela roses, which suited the season.

Ray wore a black tuxedo and black bow tie, with gold-tone embellished seahorse and starfish cufflinks from Paul Smith. As well as having wildflowers in his buttonhole he added a thistle as a nod to his Scottish heritage.

The bridesmaids wore long dresses with lace detail, each in a different colour: green, blue and pink, to represent the three fairies from Sleeping Beauty. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos with different colour bow ties to mirror the bridesmaids’ dresses.

39 REAL WEDDINGS

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE

One of the first suppliers I booked was the harpist who played A Whole New World from Aladdin as I walked down the aisle. She also played a number of other Disney songs as guests arrived. In fact, she learned lots of new songs for us, which we really appreciated.

We hired a DJ for the evening, he did a great job and got everyone up on the dancefloor. My favourite part of the day was probably the first dance to Once Upon a Dream. I felt like a princess in a fairy tale. Plan and organise everything as much as you can before the wedding day. For example, send your suppliers your timeline and include emergency contacts for them to use on the day. Likewise, send this to the wedding coordinators, bridesmaids and groomsmen along with all of the suppliers’ contacts. This means you won’t have to worry about anything on the day and can enjoy peace of mind.

WITH THANKS

My hair and make-up artists, Suzy and Kelli, were amazing on the morning of the wedding. They were so friendly and bubbly, which I think is why I didn’t really feel nervous while getting ready. They managed to see to everyone on time and made the morning preparations an enjoyable experience.

Our photographer Flo went above and beyond on the day, and captured the most incredible photos that we will cherish forever. She also made everyone feel really comfortable and at ease. The fact that she was able to capture so many great images without making us all feel as though we were on a photo shoot is truly an art!

Becca and Pete met at school, aged 15, when they were sat next to each other in geography. They connected straight away and the rest is history. Well, not quite! Becca tells us, “We officially became a couple on the school field in March 2012 and have stuck by each other’s sides ever since. We’re truly the best of friends. We have the same sense of humour and have always mirrored each other’s hopes and dreams.” The pair have been through a lot together in their decade-long relationship, including living an hour away from each other when Becca went to university and Pete began his career at home. But despite living busy lives they always prioritised their relationship and supported one another.

By December 2019, the couple had started talking about marriage and were about to move into their first home together, so it seemed like the next natural step. However, Becca still hadn’t expected what was about to happen when they visited Rye and Camber Sands. On arriving at a quiet spot on the beach Pete got down on one knee in the wet sand and asked Becca to be his wife. “I cried and said ‘yes,’ it was perfect,” Becca shares. “Afterwards, we went to our favourite hot chocolate shop in Rye, Knoops, and then on to brunch, which I couldn’t eat as I was still so shocked!”

History enthusiast Pete dreamed of saying “I do” in a castle, which had rubbed off on Becca. Despite this they never imagined their budget would allow for such an opulent venue, but when Pete discovered Westenhanger Castle online, they were pleasantly surprised. “It has so much history and character, making it feel incredibly special. Alongside the gorgeous ivy-clad manor house, the rest of the grounds are equally stunning,” Becca explains.

The date was set for 3rd August, 2022, and here the bride tells us all about the big day...

43 REAL WEDDINGS

Our registrar was the most lovely lady. She instantly put us at ease and adapted the ceremony to our personalities beautifully. You could tell she loved her job and the ceremony went incredibly smoothly.

After the ceremony we both felt happiness like we’ve never felt before and this feeling didn’t leave us for the whole day. We were over the moon to finally be married and to be celebrating with the people closest to us.

I wore a Romantica of Devon gown. It wasn’t what I originally wanted as I’d envisioned myself in a mermaid-style dress, whereas this was A-line. But I’m so happy I went for this silhouette as it’s the most beautiful I’ve felt in my life.

The bridesmaids were dressed in sage green, flutter sleeve, long, chiffon dresses with scallop-strap blush pink heels with silver accessories. They wore their hair up in a loose, curled bun with our chosen flowers tucked in the back.

Pete wore a slim-fit dark navy suit that matched his groomsmen’s. He also wore a sage tie and pocket square with brown brogue-style shoes.

We lit the dovecote up with 100 tea lights. It was such an intimate and beautiful place to sign our marriage certificate, just the two of us with our witnesses.

“Our venue’s team went above and beyond to ensure our dream wedding came to life.”

For the centrepieces we opted for wooden log slices topped with jars of flowers reflecting our rustic theme and sage green palette.

We used wooden elements as much as possible throughout the venue styling to tie our rustic theme together. Alongside the centrepieces this also included the table plan and easel, place names and table name signs.

Our four-tier semi-naked cake was adorned in more of our wedding flowers.

wedding favours were delicious Mr and Mrs Little cookies. My bouquet contained roses, gypsophila, eucalyptus and ivy.

My mum and dad did a joint speech, which included a video montage of baby photos set to the song I Loved Her First by Heartland. It was so moving so see that they’d put so much effort into it.

After our wedding breakfast we went off with our photographer and videographer for some photos. We had so much fun around the grounds and it gave us some time away from the group to reflect on the day and be with each other.

In the evening our DJ was amazing at responding to our guests’ musical tastes and set such a great atmosphere. He’d studied our preferences carefully and put together a brilliant playlist that had most people on the dancefloor all night.

BOUNTY Nature’s

When I visited Chapel House Estate I was wowed by the outdoor ceremony area and openair spaces. The greens and oranges that naturally colour the surroundings inspired the vibe of this shoot,” says shoot coordinator Julie Walker of Wedding Cakes By The Sea. She was also keen to present an LGBTQ+ wedding shoot and enlisted the help of two real couples. Neither had prior modelling experience so this lent the images a casual edge as we see how much everyone is enjoying themselves. There were even a couple of supercute furry models involved since the venue is dog-friendly.

Love is in the air at Chapel House Estate’s apple and pear orchards Images courtesy of Tony Pullen Photography
Julie’s plan was for apples and pears to be at the forefront of the images wherever possible to reflect the bountiful grounds at Chapel House; as is evident in the fruit-filled floral crown, bridal fruit-bouquet and apple-filled vases framing the aisle. In addition to real fruit, she even created apples from modelling chocolate to adorn the top tier of the wedding cake. Now that’s attention to detail! LOCAL SHOOT 49

INTO THE woods

When you talk woodland wedding ideas anything you conjure up will normally involve autumnal hues, pumpkins and turning leaves. So, I wanted to create a shoot full of these textures, but with everything winter. Think cones, bare branches, bark, faux fur, pheasant features and antlers,” explains shoot coordinator Laurie Edwards of Chic Weddings and Events.

The focus of the shoot was on the woodland area surrounding Rowhill Grange, where the team created a dramatic moon gate as the

ceremony backdrop. Then, to bring the outside in, they selected the wood-panelled private dining room in the main hotel for the wedding breakfast set up. A decadent tablescape fit for a hearty winter meal was created using a mix of vintage gold velvet tablecloths layered with faux fur, while natural, low floral arrangements in gold-footed bowls ran along the centre with a mass of gold tea lights and candles to bring the warmth and winter glow. And of course, what winter setting would be complete without a dusting of snow and a reindeer?

a time ONE STEP AT

Congratulations – you’re engaged! Now what? Find out with our planning timeline compiled with the help of those who know it best, Kent’s incredible wedding suppliers.

IN FOR A PENNY IN FOR A POUND

Before you start surfing the internet for venues and suppliers, sit down together with a cuppa and discuss what you want your wedding day to be. Whatever you decide will have an impact on everything else you do from here on in. Think about your overall vision. Is rustic bliss your vibe, or are you more the modern chic kind of couple? Perhaps you want to keep it classic and traditional. You may even want to go completely your own way and host a festival-style wedding in a field with a temporary structure such as a marquee or tipi for cover. Then there’s the ceremony. What do you want the most important part of the day to look and feel like? Do you have your hearts set on saying “I do” al fresco, or were you hoping for autumn or winter nuptials and therefore comfy and cosy vows under cover? All of these aspects will guide you towards the style of venue you should be researching.

Crucial to this process is the budget and guest numbers, as one will very much dictate the other. You may want to invite 300 people, but are you willing and able to fund 300 wedding breakfasts? Be realistic about what you want to spend, settle on a budget and above all, stick to it. Work together to devise a preliminary guest list as this will guide you

towards the size of venue you’ll be looking for. Jennifer Daniels at Powder Mill Productions says, “Make a wedding planning checklist. This will help you to stay on track and to budget.” And as Becky Rasmus from Waves Weddings and Events says, “If the whole idea of planning your wedding is giving you nightmares, hire a planner. We can help with so many different elements from ensuring you get the perfect venue, to budgeting, supplier selection and overall management. We can save you time, money and stress.”

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

When people ask us what to book first our answer is always: the venue. Without having your venue secured, you won’t have a date and without a date you won’t be able to book the rest of your suppliers. Hit the internet as soon as you’re ready to start planning and check out all of the incredible locations in this glorious county. From historical to quirky and everything in between, Kent has it all. Pop over to the Find a Service section over at www.yourkent.wedding as well as www.yourkent.wedding/venue-inspiration-headlines, both great places to start.

FINE TUNE THE THEME

With venue booked we recommend at this point you start to fine tune your vision in order to narrow down the suppliers to those specialists who can help. Jennifer at Powder Mill Productions explains, “Think about your guests’ experience from the moment they arrive, to the welcome drinks, seating, dining, speeches and evening entertainment. We specialise in creating a delightfully rustic feel for your wedding. Our wooden illuminated letters, candy cart, hessian-covered selfie frame, whisky barrels and authentic iron postboxes are all designed to work in harmony, creating that sought-after rustic effect.”

OH SNAP!

While you’re researching your dream team, we’d recommend putting your photographer towards the top of that list. These talented folk get booked up further ahead than you’d believe. So, when you find the one, don’t delay. Find someone whose work you adore and suits your style and get in touch. If you click with them and believe you’ll feel comfortable having them document your day, snap them up. Local wedding photographer Ray Goodwin says, “Choosing your photographer can be a confusing and expensive task, this is because a professional may offer album print, parents’ albums, or even prints in frames. My advice would be to go for a package to include an album it’ll probably work out better value in the long run.”

FIND YOUR SUPPLIERS

With the all-important wedding date in your diary and vision firmly in your mind, you can start assembling the rest of your W-day team. “Start early,” Becky from Waves Weddings and Events says. Good suppliers are often booked up one to two years in advance, if not longer, so if you have your heart set on someone or something specific, make sure you get into their diary in good time. Choose carefully, work with those you connect with and who really get your vision to ensure you get the day of your dreams.” While Natalie Skingley from Bradbourne House adds, “We recommend starting with your venue’s recommended supplier list, as they know the venue best.”

Another route is to look for a full-service company that allows you to book as much as you can in one place. Jennifer at Powder Mill Productions says, “This takes the stress out of the organisation and helps you concentrate on the nice things! We can provide everything from the bar, to entertainment and décor. You’ll even have your own bookings manager to guide you every step of the way.”

Whoever you decide to bring on board, make sure you’re booking quality. The last thing you want is to be let down on the most important day of your life. Check out the company’s reviews online. Great suppliers will be proud to share what other couples have said about them. Also, be sure of their credentials. Jennifer says, “Ensure your suppliers have public liability insurance, and for any catering check that they have the relevant hygiene or alcohol licenses in place. Powder Mill Productions will take care of any temporary event notices if you want to use our hire bar in a venue like a village hall or a marquee.”

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT

Childcare is also something you’ll need to think about early on. Carole Cassidy from Carousel Creche says, “If you have children attending the day or evening and know you’ll want childcare to keep them safe, happy and entertained, book the date and pay the deposit early on to avoid missing out. Someone else will always want the same date as you!

“Once you’ve narrowed your list down to a preferred supplier, meet with them and at least one of the staff members who’ll be attending on the day. It’s important that you bond with them and feel comfortable with the person who’ll be looking after your precious littlest guests. While you’re there ask for qualification, DBS and insurance certificates and find out what activities they’d provide throughout the day.”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Another area that should be top of the agenda is the catering. Let’s face it who wouldn’t want to prioritise food? If you’ve taken the dry-hire route with a blank canvas venue and you’re pulling the whole shebang together yourself, this is doubly important. Clare Smith from Touchays Event Caterers says, “Organising a dry-hire wedding is a massive undertaking for anyone. Inevitably it comes with its challenges, especially when fitting it around a basic barn or field venue where you have to organise every element. So, why not book a caterer who goes beyond the kitchen and offers a full or partial wedding-planning service as we do? That way you won’t have anything to worry about on the big day.”

READY, STEADY, SHOP!

Since wedding dresses often need to be ordered well in advance, it’s a good idea to start shopping early on as it could take time to settle on the one. Victoria Walton, owner of Victoria Elaine Bridal, has some words of wisdom on this front: “Look out for designer events. Boutiques can’t have every dress by a single designer in one shop. So, they often hold designer events to show off an entire collection for a week or two a year. If you know the designer you love, talk to your local stockist about their next event.

“Once you’ve made your appointment, consider who you want to bring. Trust us on this, you don’t want the entire hen party there! Select two to three people whose opinions are invaluable to you and that’s enough. If something catches your eye on the rail, try it on. Plenty of brides come in with a fixed idea of what they hope to find in a dress and go away with the complete opposite!”

ONE YEAR TO GO

Now’s the time to start tightening up that guest list and sending out savethe-dates. This might be a particularly good idea if your date falls during school holidays or a bank holiday for example, as your guests are likely to fill their diaries much sooner at these times. Natalie at Bradbourne House says, “Send your invites out in plenty of time. Make sure to check for special meal requests and dietary requirements.”

It’s time to say “yes to the dress.” Victoria Walton, owner of Victoria Elaine Bridal Boutique says, “Plan ahead! If you’re after a made-toorder or made-to-measure gown, try to have it ordered at least a year in advance. You need to take into account the time the gown takes to be made and shipped to the store, as well as alteration time.”

If you’re working with an event caterer rather than the venue’s in-house supplier, they’ll likely be devising a bespoke menu for you, so you’ll be thinking about the food a bit earlier in the process. Clare from Touchays recommends you think about the season as you work on this together. “We purposefully design menus to ensure couples are getting the best value for money, but even more importantly, that it highlights the bounty of each season as well as the uniqueness of the occasion,” she says.

THREE TO SIX MONTHS TO GO

“Book your wine and food tasting with your venue,” Natalie advises. “Make sure you’re happy with the dishes you’ve picked and take time to look at the presentation and wine pairing. This is your time to make any changes to suit.”

Be prepared for a busy schedule! “Remember to set aside time for fittings, collections, food tastings and final detail meetings. These appointments and meetings are often held in the week, as your suppliers will be busy on critical days, such as Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as they’re setting up or delivering weddings,” Clare Smith from Touchays Event Caterers tells us.

One such meeting will be with the seamstress making your dress alterations. Victoria at Victoria Elaine Bridal says, “Don’t be afraid to make custom changes to your gown if something’s not quite right. Discuss the area that’s giving you cause for doubt with your stylist or seamstress. We often adapt necklines, add sleeves, change fabrics, or add more sparkle to dresses at the alteration stage to make it absolutely perfect.”

THREE TO ONE MONTH TO GO

You’re nearly there! “Gather all the final arrangements with plenty of time,” Natalie says. “This includes things like your final guest numbers, supplier insurances and seating plan. This will help to eliminate last-minute worry or stress.” Becky from Waves Weddings and Events says, “Plan for every eventuality and make sure you have a plan B in case of changes, particularly important with outdoor weddings when the weather is a key factor.”

During this time you’ll be finalising the details with your suppliers. Ray says, “It’s a good idea to work out approximate timings with your photographer. Things like the time of their arrival to the departure address, and when they’ll need to leave. Don’t forget, photos of the groom and ushers need to be taken and the photographer needs to get to the venue to park, set up equipment and prepare for the bride’s arrival. If you can, do a dry run from wherever you’re getting ready to the wedding venue on the same day of the week at the same time.”

FOUR WEEKS TO GO

“Relax, once everything is handed over to your events coordinator trust you’re in safe hands,” Natalie says. Ray agrees: “On the day, have a great time, let the professionals do the job they love and remember to turn your phone off!”

AFTER THE BIG DAY

The big day may be over, but there’s still plenty to look forward to such as putting your album together. Photographer Ray Goodwin says, “Upon completion of your bespoke wedding album, you’ll have a collection of beautiful images ranging from hair and make-up, portraits in lovely locations, friends and family, the one and only first kiss and a lifetime of memories presented in a stunning handmade album. It’s hard to visualise these products and the quality of the finished images, so I’d highly recommend a chat over a cuppa with your photographer, well away from a computer screen.”

AND BACK To the moon

Saved by its local community, a former Margate synagogue is about to fling open it’s doors once more with a new lease of life as a wedding venue and cultural space Images

64

When a group of local women learned that Margate’s striking synagogue had been put up for sale at auction back in 2019, they set up a Crowdfunder campaign to buy and save it. Each of Jewish heritage, these women saw the potential to transform it into a secular cultural and creative resource for their local community.

Although the fund-raising target wasn’t reached, they were nevertheless successful in attracting someone who bought the building for the very purpose they’d hoped to obtain it for. Jan Ryan, a creative producer and co-founder of the Power of Women festival had also been campaigning to save the space from developers, and is now leading a passionate team working to establish the synagogue as an inclusive and accessible hub. Having collaborated with organisations around the world, including the Barbican in London, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC and the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, she immediately saw the building’s potential as a community space, wedding and music venue.

Renamed ARK and launching as a wedding venue in 2023 the space offers a wonderful location for meaningful celebrations, a mere five-minute walk from the beach. It boasts a stunning, double-height ceiling with ample original, rustic features and a split-level interior with cosy festoon lighting. Best of all, weddings held here will help to fund and support ARK’s creative community programme and ongoing refurbishment, so saying “I do” will be made all the sweeter in the knowledge you’re giving something back.

To show you just what you can do with this characterful venue Camille Roman at Posy Patou set out to create this gorgeous styled shoot in line with its ethos. “Working with ARK’s volunteers and local wedding suppliers, the idea was to use sustainable materials. The moon-keeper theme we ran with is a reference to the celestial features on the windows and to Margate’s expansive skies,” Camille shares.

Inspiring sustainable touches can be found throughout, such as the bridal gown, which was created using repurposed lace, and the earrings made from recycled plastic. Beautiful moon-themed and ethically-printed stationery sits alongside repurposed and illustrated oyster shells, while the printed ribbon tied around the bouquet is reusable making it a wonderful memento of the day. Finally, the beautiful blooms themselves represent responsibly-foraged floristry created by community-run Windmill Gardens in Margate.

You can see ARK’s first exhibition, Cliftonville Voices, at the Margate Museum this spring.

Delight in the details

Personalise your big day with these fabulous finishing touches

How is your big-day checklist coming along? If you’ve just entered the year of the wedding, we expect you’ll have your supplier hotlist firmly in place, and will by now be ironing out the final details. If there are some pennies left in the pot for some fab finishing touches, check out these ideas. They’ll take your wedding to the next level – how can you resist?

Balloon displays today are a world away from the ones we remember from our childhoods. Now oh-so chic, they create a fabulous focal point for your venue and are one of our trends to watch out for in 2023. Do leave it to the professionals though as there's still a tightrope to walk between classy and tacky and they know that they're doing!

Recognising how important couples’ pets are to them, the number of dog-friendly wedding venues in Kent is ever on the rise. Kerry at Furrytail Weddings (www.furrytail-weddings.co.uk) says, “Pets are family and couples don’t want to leave them out.” So, hiring a specialist supplier can make this a breeze. Kerry continues, “Dedicated staff take care of your fur baby’s transport and care needs or help them carry out special duties such as being a ring bearer. What’s more, here at Furrytail Weddings we’re fully-insured to meet the new Kent registrar rules surrounding animals and weddings.”

Hannah at Johanna Event Hire (www.facebook.com/ Johannaeventhire) says, “We’re noticing lots of requests for ceremony backdrops and our full moon gate is proving popular, providing a stunning photo opportunity for the newlyweds. What’s more, creating stunning entrances by way of a wedding arch, flower frame or fabric draping leaves your guests with the feeling they’re entering a special space.”

FINISHING TOUCHES 69

Hannah says, “There seems to be as much focus on the ceremony styling and florals as on the traditional items for the wedding breakfast. Couples booking their 2023 weddings are still loving traditional, classic foliage and florals in soft white – it really is the epitome of romance. Luxurious aisle runners paired with these popular florals create a beautiful space for guests during the ‘I dos’ and when everything is tied into the wedding breakfast palette the flowers can be utilised after the ceremony.”

Tanya from Stem by Stem (https://stembystemflowers.co.uk) says, “The big trend for 2023 is sustainability: lowering the carbon footprint of your wedding can be done by choosing UKgrown flowers, foliage and even plants. The latter can become a lasting reminder of the wedding if planted in the garden or a container afterwards.

“Large statement plants such as olive or bay either side of a doorway or to define an outdoor aisle can then be moved to the reception. Small, planted containers can be great as table arrangements – choose an outdoor or indoor selection of plants depending on the time of year. These also make great presents for guests.”

“UK-grown lavender, olive or rosemary can be used to make place settings and stand up well to being out of water. Small succulents also work beautifully used for the same purpose,” Tanya tells us.

2023 TRENDS SPECIAL

HOT TOPIC

Join us as some of Kent’s wedding aficionados discuss their top 2023 trend predictions

A DAY TO REMEMBER

Kylie Christie from The Old Kent Barn (www.theoldkentbarn.co.uk) says: Modern lifestyles leave less time for wedding planning, so couples are looking for planning support from time of booking, along with resources and advice with remote meetings and solutions to fit around busy schedules. Many are looking for impressive settings to say their “I dos.” Ceremony locations have become a top priority when choosing a venue, with nearlyweds looking for the perfect outdoor location with stunning backdrops.

The 2023 couple are stylish, fashion focused and keen to reflect their personalities. Florals never go out of fashion and many are experimenting with colours and choosing layers of hues, tones and shades for styling. Nature and natural colours are popular palette themes and we expect to see more monochrome styling and black tie looks – classy, elegant and timeless. Locally-sourced menus complementing the season will be key. We also anticipate a rise in popularity of pairing menus with English sparkling wines, Kent being in a perfect location with many vineyards within easy reach of venues in the county.

Expect to see more wows! Soon-to-be weds are opting for highlight moments during the day such as live artists painting watercolour mementos for guests, and spectacular evening celebrations with live music, performances and surprises for family and friends. Finally, remember: it’s all in the details! From beautiful embroidered veils and embossed stationery, to specially selected accessories for curated detail shots, 2023 weddings will focus on the finer things.

SWEET ELEGANCE

Lyndsay Allen-Trott from Cake It Or Leave It (www.cake-it-or-leave-it.co.uk) says: This year, wedding cakes will be back stronger than ever! Naked and buttercream bakes are here to stay and will continue to feature heavily in 2023. They’re great for rustic, rural, vintage or countryside weddings.

In terms of decoration, marble cakes will be a big favourite. These will be perfect if you want a sugar paste cake without the shrillness of huge decorations. Grey and white is a perfect combination for a simple cake that oozes elegance. While other blends of blues, white and rosecoloured marble will also be feature.

Hexagonal cakes look set to play a part in 2023 as well. These offer the ideal mixture of modernity and elegance, with a striking appearance. They’re best kept simple.

When it comes to flavour, red velvet is making a comeback along with coffee cake, which can be harmoniously paired with chocolate. We’ll also see more tropical-themed flavours, with chocolate and fruit combo bakes set to trend.

73 EXPERT ADVICE

PICK OF THE BUNCH

Kate Blott from Atlas Flowers (www.atlasflowers.co.uk) says: Gypsophila is one of the most popular filler flowers used by wedding designers, and has long been a top choice for centrepieces, bouquets and hair adornments, along with several varieties of eucalyptus. While roses, gypsophila and eucalyptus are all still very popular with brides and florists alike, it’s clear that many couples have been inspired to try something new.

Meanwhile, searches for ruscus and bunny tail grass has grown 37 per cent and 21 per cent respectively between summer 2021 and 2022. There’s no single reason why ruscus and lagurus ovatus have surged in popularity, but a quick glance at Instagram and Pinterest make it clear that their popularity is still snowballing. For dried grasses in particular, we’re sure that some of the fresh interest has come from influencers like Mrs Hinch and Stacy Solomon showcasing pampas and other similar grasses in their own homes.

The shift towards artificial and dried bouquets that happened throughout the pandemic also looks like it’s here to stay, with the popularity of these long-lasting options still outstripping interest in other bouquets by a considerable distance each month. Aside from the fact they can be prepared and viewed well in advance of the big day, they also come with the benefit of easy, long-term storage should you decide to keep it as a memento. Some budget-conscious couples are also looking for floral options they can resell once the big day is over, to recoup some of the cost of the event.

www.smileyhuseyinphotography.com

CANDID CAMERA

Fatma Keeley from Smiley Huseyin Photography (www.smileyhuseyinphotography.com) says: Candid photos have always been a fabulous way to document the realness of weddings, which in turn provide couples with actual memories of the joy and excitement experienced on their special day. This type of photography can be achieved as long as couples are out there enjoying their wedding party with their guests.

In the past two years since weddings have been back in full swing, I’d noticed a massive emphasis on group photos with couples having endless lists of shots they wanted, as they valued every member of their wedding party and so wanted to make sure they have a photo of each and every one. This in turn meant they’d have less time to enjoy their pre-breakfast drinks and also meant that there were very few candid shots with their friends and family. Towards the end of 2022, I noticed a change in photo requests, couples are still wanting some group shots, however, what they really want is to enjoy their wedding and to get on with being in those natural candid moments. I predict this will continue into 2023.

SMALL AND PERFECTLY FORMED

Becky Bosman from The Lost Village of Dode (www.dodevillage.com) says: Following the forced scaling back of weddings during the pandemic, we’ve certainly seen more couples looking to continue with this trend of keeping things small, intimate and simple; sharing the day with those who really matter the most. Along with the current rise in cost of living, having a scaled-back wedding can also help with those budgets, but remember, just because a wedding is small it certainly doesn’t mean it’s any less magical.

Q&A andFashionbeauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the experts

This issue we asked the county’s fashion and beauty experts for their top 2023 trend predictions, giving you the jump on the latest looks. This is what they told us...

THE YEAR OF THE NO MAKE-UP LOOK

Kent-based bridal make-up artist Ruth Ashcroft (www.instagram.com/ra.mua) says: I’m expecting 2023 brides to be asking for a flawless, fresh complexion with a minimal make-up look. The eyeshadow will be a less complicated combination of colours, leaning more towards a natural palette, which complements the individual’s own colouring. There could also be a hint of colour to slightly enhance the bride’s eye shade if needed, with everything working together in harmony. Then, there’s the ultra-natural look, which has been stripped back to the bare minimum or so it looks, but there will be products used. This all comes down to application and preparation of the skin. The no make-up make-up look is back! www.rosaclara.es/en

THE YEAR OF FABULOUS FABRICS

CWM fashion editor Claire Ridley says: There’s plenty to love and look out for in new-season bridal dress designs. I’ve fallen for...  Sustainable fabrics including organic lace, satin, Mikado and natural silk.  Plain dresses featuring clean-cut lines with a minimalist aesthetic.  Sheath-style gowns, created in stretch crepe and georgette showcasing fabulous front splits. 

Statement sleeves with lightly puffed styles adding the wow factor.  A new take on princess-style dresses in the form of lace bodices adorned with beautiful beadwork and voluminous skirts made with layers of organza. 

The sassy mermaid silhouette, which has had an update for 2023, made in stretch crepe. 

Contoured corsetry boasting square or strapless necklines.  Wide, low backlines providing a fresh update to the illusion look, along with the option to include cape veils. 

The midi-length dress with a soft tulle skirt (à la Carrie Bradshaw), which is still popular combined with off-the-shoulder sleeves.  A touch of colour with dresses made in champagne and peach hues.  Couture details such as structured box pleats with hidden pockets, lace appliqué and floral motifs.

WatchPilot, a UK-based watch retailer, has opened its first high street store in Richmond, Surrey. Founded in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic by Tim Harrison and Akbar Hussain, WatchPilot launched online with success and has added new brands to the platform monthly. Now, along with affordable and high-end timepieces, the new bricks and mortar store will showcase more than 30 brands of watches and employ experienced and knowledgeable staff.

Tim Harrison tells us: “We will continue to grow our online presence, however, particularly within the luxury side of watch retail, there will always be demand for a premium in-store experience. If our initial Richmond store proves successful, we are open to replicating the concept in other locations.”

TRIED AND TESTED

Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, making the appearance of those dreaded lines and wrinkles more pronounced. But RoC’s new Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer comes to the rescue with SPF 30 helping to restore skin’s natural moisture, visibly replumping lines and replenishing hydration. CWM editor Rachel Westall put it to the test.

“As a woman in my 30s, my skin is an area I need to pay attention to, and with RoC endorsed by one of my all-time fave gals, Sarah Jessica Parker, I was already sold! These winter months can be so harsh on your skin so this has been a welcome addition to my morning routine, keeping my face hydrated with a natural glow. It’s superlightweight so it’s easy to apply and leaves no residue behind, only soft smooth skin all day. I can’t wait to try the entire range.” £35.99, https://rocskincare.co.uk

However, the recently-launched Utan Pen makes this goal totally achievable with zero sun damage. Designed to create instant natural-looking freckles that develop to suit each individual skin tone, it has been compared to semi-permanent make-up. The brand’s founder and perfumer Romano Ricci says of the new scent, “It would take me more than a lifetime to explore the complexity of women! Since the beginning I’ve attempted to unravel, layer by layer, the facets of women with a capital W. With this latest opus, I wanted to unite them all. Sometimes femme fatale, sometimes romantic, sometimes boyish, Ego Straits embraces all those contradictions while blurring the lines.”

THE hair NECESSITIES

Achieve wedding-ready locks with multi-award-winning celebrity hair stylist and TV hair expert Vicki Lord

Multi-award winner Vicki Lord (www.vickilord.co.uk) is no stranger to the wonderful world of bridal hair; indeed, with more than 30 years of experience, weddings are her passion. The current brand ambassador for Colour Wow, this work has most recently taken her to Australia. She can list among her latest celebrity clients Jack Whitehall, Roxy Horner, Kara Tointon, and Shona Mcgarty.

Vicki took a break from the whirlwind of the session hair world to speak to beauty editor Kelly Andrews about how best to prepare hair for the big day and shares her top bridal trend predictions for 2023.

What’s the best time to seek out a bridal hair stylist and start thinking about the big-day look? Selecting the right time to see your hair stylist for a consultation and trial is paramount and brides are always eager to book it months or even a year in advance. That said; although it may seem like a good idea, do bear in mind that hair fashions change seasonally throughout the year. Summer may be about braids, whereas winter could usher in a time of slick buns. I suggest and recommend having a trial approximately three to four months prior to your big day allowing your locks plenty of time to grow, while catering for a colour change and fashions. This will also give you enough time to find an alternative hair stylist just in case you’re not comfortable with your first choice.

Why are consultations such an important part of the process? Consultations are key when selecting your desired look for your special day. I’ve experienced many brides coming to me with photos of what they’d like their hair to look like, but sadly overlook important aspects that play a vital role when selecting a style. The shape of the face, the texture of the hair, and most importantly the neckline of that all-important dress are all crucial. For example, if you have a square jawline and want a side bun this will likely exaggerate the width of the face. I work a lot with shapes and silhouettes to make sure the look that’s chosen best complements all of my brides’ features beautifully. A good hair stylist

should be able to help and guide you to choose the perfect wedding hair for your dress.

What’s the most important consideration in the run up to W-day? It’s important to maintain the health of your hair prior to your big day. I’d recommend regular trims and conditioning treatments to keep your luscious locks in tip top condition. After all, shiny, healthy hair looks great on camera!

What bridal hair trends do you expect to see emerging in 2023? Personally, I’d like to see editorial runway hairstyles on brides and will be working on this innovative trend with my soon-to-be-weds as well as teaching these techniques to other bridal hair and make-up artists in my new academy course launching in 2023.

Delving into 2023 fashion trends, I feel inspired by 90s spiky buns as seen on the likes of Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and other social media influencers. Centre partings and wet-look styles with high shine as seen on Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Balmain runways are also fashionforward looks to keep an eye out for. I also love Giorgio Armani’s simplistic ponytails, bubble braids and pigtails.

Big hair accessories are making an appearance within designers’ collections. Think head scarves, large bows, Frida Kahlo-style flower crowns, and mini and beaded headbands. I’d love to see a bridal take on all of these to complement hair and gowns this year.

The truth ABOUT SUGAR

Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists

Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!

The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.

Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.

READ FOOD LABELS

To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or

switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.

CURB THE CRAVINGS

No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!

IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE

A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.

HEALTHY SUGARS

Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such

as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND

Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.

A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.

Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view. We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.
