inter weddings are really coming in to their own; couples are embracing the autumnal hues, the cosy atmosphere and the delish hearty food options on offer at this time of year! The best thing about a winter wedding for me, is that you know what you’re letting yourself in for when it comes to the weather. I tied the knot in February (a few years ago now!), and although I kept an eye on the weather apps, I couldn’t be disheartened when the heavens opened and it rained most of the day. It didn’t change the day at all, we dashed outside with brollies for some pictures, and we celebrated the whole day in a gorgeous venue without a care what happening in the world outside. We were in wedded bliss whatever the weather, so don’t worry if you too have a wedding in the coming months – I hear rain on the wedding day is lucky anyway! Here’s what you have to look forward to this issue: we have hotel wedding venues on page 27 (perfect for winter nuptials), and a feature looking at finishing touches to complete your day– be inspired on page 57. If you’re embarking on your wedding dress (or jumpsuit!) search, then check out our bridal fashion features from page 61 to 72 where we help you with this daunting task. What’s more, our Wedding Planning article starting on page 51 will answer all your planning woes. Our real wedding couples this issue all talk about their dream days, so from pages 31 to 46 there could be some ideas you want to pinch and apply to your own virtual moodboard. The Kent countryside retreat combines a restaurant headed by executive chef Scott Goss, creating a unique destination for food enthusiasts and those seeking the perfect escape. Champion of Kent produce and alumni of the late great Gary Rhodes, chef Scott Goss says, “I’m thrilled that we are able to offer guests a culinary experience through our restaurant, events and weddings, plus the addition of offering a luxe home from home. THE CASTLE WESTENHANGER 01303 261 068 | www.westenhangercastle.co.uk The Castle Westenhanger is situated just outside the historic market town of Hythe. The scheduled ancient monument is surrounded by 14 acres of magnificent countryside, where couples can find countless photo opportunities. This fortified, quadrangular manor house, dating back to 1343, is a hidden gem and has been sympathetically restored in recent years; beautiful sash windows symmetrically line the front of the manor house and ancient ruins surround the venue. The venue’s interior is quirky and full of character, with surprises to be found at every turn: flagstone flooring, exposed brick walls, beautiful wooden beams − all tell the story of this historic venue. There’s also a unique and romantic dovecote with 400 nesting boxes, glowing candles, and twinkling lights cascading from the ceiling. The quirky room is perfect for intimate wedding photos and holds a special place in the hearts of many couples who have tied the knot at The Castle Westenhanger. For ceremonies the venue’s outdoor ceremony area, The Gazebo, seats up to 120 guests. Its enchanting, thatched roof and oak-frame is positioned on the castle lawn and enjoys spectacular views of the castle

and Medieval ruins, including the intriguing Rosamund’s Tower. Inside, The Banqueting Hall seats up to 120 guests, with exposed wooden beams, beautiful brickwork, and Medieval windows, the former banqueting hall promises an unforgettable indoor ceremony option. For larger ceremonies the marquee, positioned on the castle lawn, has views of the ruins and provides a perfect location for up to 300 guests. Jessica and James’ big day had a music theme and lots of personal touches

ess and James met through mutual friends in 2012 and found mutual interests in music and festivals for a relationship to soon blossom. James proposed to Jess on 17th December 2021 on a cold Christmas getaway to Berlin, Germany, which was a surprise to the unsuspecting bride-to-be. The big date was set, 13th May, 2023, with Reach Court Farm setting the scene. Here, Jess tells us more about their day… 33

We always knew that we wanted to get married at Reach Court Farm. I love the atmosphere and the outside space, it has a very ‘Kentish’ feel both inside and out. I love the outdoor ceremony area, and all the seating outside, perfect for a spring/summer wedding. James and Oliver were incredible people to plan a wedding with.

We gave everyone scratchards with ‘we tied the knot so we hope you hit the jackpot’ on them. We wanted something people could do together on the table and get involved with, not something you take home and stick in a drawer and forget about.

We wanted to mix my love of pastel flowe rs and springtime peonies with our other favourite thing: music and recor ds. On the table plan, each table was a vinyl record of one of our favo urite bands, surrounded by pastel peonies to pull in the theme.

I really hate shopping, so wedding dress shopping was not at the top of my to-do list. Zoe, from Beautiful in Curves, made me feel so comfortable; she pulled the dress off the rack, and I instantly knew that this was going to be the dress. I styled it with some high top lace bridal Converse, because you need to be comfortable on your wedding day.

We had a string quartet for the ceremony and after for the canapé reception. They were incredible, we still talk about how great they were. I walked down the aisle to the Jurassic Park theme tune, and everyone was so happy and shocked. During the ceremony they played songs by the Foo Fighters and Beatles which was just great and very us.

As soon as we woke up and the sun was shining we knew it was going to be a great day. We were very chilled and were more than happy to go with the flow and didn’t really fixate on timings as I knew it would just stress us out.

James and Hannah, our photographers, were just amazing from the moment we booked them to discussing our final photos. They were so sweet and friendly, and made the day so easy for us both. For two people that hate having our photo taken, they really made us feel at ease. There was no pressure and they were totally guided by us and what we were comfortable with. Not only that, but they are a great laugh and so easy to get on with.

my and Dan met when they were 17 and hit it off straight away. “I worked in a tearoom and Dan worked in a fruit and vegetable shop and delivered to us. Dan was the guy that all the ladies fancied so I thought there was no chance; he was handsome with dark hair and chatty, I thought: he’s a bit of alright!” Dan adds, “Amy was always chatty too, she never stopped talking; plus, as she worked in the tearooms I would always get a free breakfast!” After a relationship beckoned, Dan proposed on the 10th July 2021. Dan had planned to do it at Cirque Du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall, however this was cancelled due to Covid. He then decided to propose at Trafalgar Square by the fountains, but little did he know, England would make the World Cup finals! “He had no choice but to try and find somewhere else to propose,” shares Amy. “Luckily we had a nice walk along the embankment and strolled down to the London Eye, where Dan proposed on one knee! This took me by complete surprise, I was not expecting it whatsoever! It also took Dan by surprise as London was so busy with lots of England fans so he had a big audience!” The date was set, 2nd September, 2023, with Chilston Park Hotel setting the scene. “Chilston Park Hotel blew us away! It has so much to offer; beautiful interior and décor, and stunning grounds. It just looked stunning from the moment we drove down the driveway!” recalls Amy. “Sophie, our coordinator, was exceptional, going above and beyond to help make sure everything was perfect, which it was!”

THE LOOK OF THE DAY Wanting the overall look and feel of the day to have a neutral aesthetic, Amy and Dan kept the finer details plain and simple. “The florist, Linda, created each centrepiece for reception tables and the registrar table arrangement with a mix of creams and whites, with green foliage,” shares Amy, “Linda also made a teardrop bouquet with silk ribbon wrapped around the stems which matched the other floral elements.” The centrepieces, were large martini glasses filled with small gel balls, cream pearls drooped down the side, with a stunning mix of cream and white flowers inside to create a dome effect. The table plan added a pop of colour with a navy background, made using stencils and then the addition of faux flowers. For favours on the tables, Amy made white butterfly cases filled with small chocolates tied with a ribbon. A focal point at any reception, the couple’s big-day bake was a three-tier cake with red velvet layers and a top tier of fruit cake, “This was especially for my nan!” adds Amy. “Angela has always made my cakes, so there was no other choice of who was going to make our wedding cake. She used a cream-coloured icing and added our initials and fine swirly details which we’d requested – it tasted amazing!” Amy and Dan also hired KC Weddings & Events which dressed the Chiavari chairs and also the top table. “They used cream ruffle drapes adorned with pearl brooches − these were stunning!” adds Amy. “Finally, the hotel also provided the catering. We had a menu tasting beforehand to pick which meals we wanted, and the food was incredible.” 39

LOOKING THE PART Amy had always known that when she tied the knot, she wanted a ballgown-style dress. “I would always walk past this shop and be like ‘I want that one!’. So, when the day came, I knew where to go, and that was Perfection in Maidstone. The dress I picked was Sincerity by Justin Alexander.” Dan looked dapper in a tan, tweed, three-piece suit from Marc Darcy which had darker patches on both elbows, as well the collar, which were a suede material. “The suit really complemented the venue, and he looked so handsome,” shares Amy. “Our son was in a matching suit from Marc Darcy too!” The groomsmen were in contrasting navy blazers with light beige chinos and a tweed tie; while the bridesmaids wore dusky pink, Grecian-style, off-the-shoulder dresses, with a pearl brooch on their shoulder and a pearl headpiece to match.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS On the day both Amy and Dan were nervous but so excited to be marrying one another as well. “There were so many parts of our day that stood out. It’s so hard to name them all, of course, looking at Dan and our two children all looking gorgeous as ever,” shares Amy. “Walking down the aisle to see one another was an amazing feeling. That’s all we could see, just each other knowing we are going to spend the rest of our lives together.” “Amy looked stunning in her dress it took my breath away and yes I did have a cry,” recalls Dan. “Seeing everyone at our special day and being so happy makes us happy.” The first dance was a moment to remember for the pair, their chosen song was by George Ezra Hold My Girl, “It’s our little girl’s song so it holds a special place in our hearts, we had our moment to dance as newlyweds but also to dance as a family as well – it was a very emotional moment. “247 DJs were amazing at getting our guests up and dancing about. They were also great at listening to what we wanted for our big day. “We both thought ‘what an amazing day we both had’ and loved every minute and wish we could do it all over again. We were so very lucky that Nicky’s Photography captured all our special moments so we can look back and remember the most special day of our lives. “Having our nearest and dearest being there made our day. We couldn’t have done it without them. Having my nan being able to watch me on our big day meant the world to me, knowing that my mum, who sadly passed away, was not there. S

ophie and Sam instantly clicked 10 years ago when they met on a night out at Kent University; Sophie was a student and Sam was out with his rugby team. After starting a relationship Sam later proposed while the couple were in Thailand after a day of exploring the Phiphi Islands on a secluded beach. “He felt like it was the right moment, after

carrying the ring in a box on a wobbly boat for the entire day!” shares Sophie. “It was near the beginning of the holiday, so it gave us a good excuse to celebrate for the remaining duration!” The big date was set, 8th July 2023 with Chapel House Estate setting the scene. Here, Sophie tells us more about their day... 45

Sam and the groomsmen wore matching black velvet jackets and trousers from Next.

I wore a Charlie Brear dress from Clementine Bridal, tailored by Delphine Couture. I accessorised with a hairpiece and earrings by Tilly Thomas Lux. My engagement and wedding ring were designed by Fitzgerald Jewellers in Canterbury.

Our wedding cars were Sam’s dad’s! It’s a bit of a tradition to have the cars within a family wedding day, plus they are beautiful!

The bridesmaids wore Style Cheat satin dressed in a champagne tone. The flowers were by Jacqui Arnold Simply Flowers. She was absolutely amazing and my friends have also used her services for their weddings.

46

The centrepieces I partially rented from the brilliant Boho and Bloom Hire and also bought pieces myself.

REAL WEDDINGS

We instantly fell in love with Chapel House Estate as a venue. It’s a very adaptable venue, our taste is quite modern and we didn’t want a traditional wedding style and knew we could dress it how we wanted. The whole site is built for weddings, and we really tried to use every single available space! It was a great location too, easy to get to for all our guests and the option of on-site accommodation was a huge bonus.

Our amazing backdrops were by Prestige Party Balloons. The owner is incredibly talented and they made the room!

47

The wedding breakfast catering, by Chapel House Estate, was incredible and one of the reasons we chose the venue! Evening pizza was provided by Barney and The Pizza − which was also incredible!

We had the amazing Flo Collective for the evening music. They covered the DJing too and definitely made the wedding!

I felt very relaxed on the morning of the wedding... not too many nerves! It helped that we had access to the venue to set up some parts the day before. We really enjoyed the build up, in the bridal beauty lodge, it helped that we had the loveliest hair and make-up ladies, it was such a nice atmosphere.

We loved that after the ceremony, we had our reception drinks in the walled courtyard of the venue. It was lovely to enjoy a moment just chatting afterwards with our loved ones.

Sam and his groomsmen decided to wear traditional bow ties, only to realise on the morning of the wedding that none of them knew how to tie one. Fortunately, our fantastic photographer/videographer This Modern Revelry were pros in this field and saved the day! The entrance into the wedding breakfast was a really exciting moment that Sam and I enjoyed immensely.

What made our day extra special, was all of our loved ones. We are so lucky to have such amazing friends and family and our wedding wouldn’t have been what it was without them!

We went to Sri Lanka for two weeks, planned by Trailfinders in Canterbury. We absolutely loved it, leaving on The Monday after our Saturday wedding, meant we still had the wedding buzz! Top tip: If you’re going on honeymoon immediately after the wedding, make sure you pack before the big day!

THE CHOICE IS YOURS

Q We wanted to hire a celebrant for complete freedom of how to have our ceremony. Now we’re at the point of deciding what we want, we don’t know what we want − there’s so much choice! What are a few of the celebrant rituals we could be inspired by? A This depends on your beliefs, personality, and identity as a couple. This is part of the excitement of working with a celebrant to design your perfect ceremony. For example, you might want a completely nonspiritual wedding, in which case you might love to have a hand-tying ceremony, a cocktail ceremony or to create a beautiful sand sculpture as part of a sand ceremony. However, if you wanted to represent a particular belief, an independent celebrant like me can help you to include aspects of faith into the ceremony; for example Greek crowns, Pagan hand-fasting, Celtic oathing stone or Christian candle-lighting ceremonies might suit you. In many faiths, some form of symbolic tying forms part of the ceremony. In Christian ceremonies the priest or vicar often covers the couple’s hands with his ceremonial scarf. In Sikh ceremonies the couple are tied together by items of clothing, and in the UK couples would have a hand-

fasting ceremony which joined them for a year and a day before a final ceremony confirmed their union. I hope this has explained some of the many options available to you and helped to guide you to your perfect wedding ceremony! Kate, Celebrant Kate, https://celebrantkate.co.uk

A WALK FOR TWO

DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? Q How do we know if a magician has mastered his craft before booking his services for our wedding? A If they are part of the Magic Circle then they would be of a good standard. A lot of magicians say they are part of the Magic Circle when they are not, you can check this out by contacting the magic circle directly (https://themagiccircle.co.uk) or ask the magician to show you their Magic Circle profile. But the best way is to seek recommendation from someone who has had a magician, they will give you honest advice and will tell you how good or poor the magician is. To check to ensure he’s a reputable professional, social media is the best way. A good magician will always have a social media profile, on there you can see the weddings the magician has attended, and any reviews left by customers/clients of how good the magician was on their special day. Read the reviews, it will give you a good indication of what to expect. Richard, Magician Richard Harrington www.facebook.com/Magicianrichardharrington

Q My fiancée and I would like to walk down the aisle together on our wedding, and are unsure of the logistics when choosing this option. A Thanks for your question! It’s lovely that you want to enter the ceremony together on the day, it really shows your love and respect for each other, and to everyone there, before either of you have said a word! It depends on your venue of course, but unless the space is really tight then most venues will be able to space the chairs for the guests out so that there’s enough room in the aisle for you both to walk down together. If I was your celebrant this is something that I would be checking with the wedding coordinator at the venue on the day, just to make sure. And of course, we would need to be certain there was nothing in the aisle that could cause any problems − like lit candles for example! If you both have bridesmaids and attendants such as pageboys and/or flowergirls these could walk down the aisle in front of you in pairs, and if you are having anyone to present you they could follow behind them − we want you both to be the stars of the day! Paul, Rainbow Weddings, www.rainbowweddings.net 51

fantastic by day and amazing when lit at night. Should the weather not be on your side then Trapeze marquees are available with a choice of window walls or white-side walls, both can be opened in the centre to allow the outside in. It’s a sturdy and solid design making it superior to other similar shaped marquees. Our marquees are premium quality, and we aim to provide an excellent service with our professional and friendly staff. We will work out the best package for your event, being flexible until set up day with your choice of completely open, or adding walls for our ever-changing English weather. www.richardreaderphotography.co.uk

ROOM WITH A VIEW Q We’re having an al fresco wedding reception but do want to provide cover as you can never trust the weather, although we want to maintain the outside vibe! What style of marquee would give our desired reception feel? A A Trapeze marquee is the perfect solution. Our range of stunning and unique Trapeze marquees give an individual look to your event, their elegant and distinctive design eliminates the need for ropes, guy lines and linings, maximising your space. With their sweeping lines, Trapeze marquees are dramatically different to traditional framed styles. They look

EDITOR’S TOP TIP Q What top tip do you have from the wonderful world of weddings? A In all my time of writing about weddings (20 years!) I have never seen this piece of advice, so I wanted to share a recent mishap I had with you and prevent the same happening to you. My sister is tying the knot in February and her make-up trial was booked for a lovely sunny Saturday morning in November. Due to be there at 10am, and it’s only 20-minutes away, I left at 9.30am meaning I would be early – what could go wrong right? Well, a flat tyre is what happened with an ensuing panic and trips to multiple local petrol garages to put air in it where they were either broken, blocked or being used! I arrived an hour late, I was mortified, I’m never late for anything. It got me thinking: thank god this wasn’t the day of the wedding, and I’m driving to her house to get ready or even take her to the wedding! I would never have thought to check the car was in working order, let alone the tyre pressure (I have a sensor for that too!). So, whether you’re the wedding couple, the bridal party or a guest, if you’re using your car on the big day, hen do or getting to the airport for your honeymoon, give your vehicle a once over – tyre pressure and all! Danielle, County Wedding Magazines editor, www.yourkent.wedding 52

OFF WITH A BANG Q We really want a firework display to end our wedding day so want to choose the venue accordingly. What do we need to consider? A The main thing to consider is whether or not the venue allows fireworks in the first place and, if they do, do they require them to be lower noise? Lower noise displays are just as impactful but you must manage your own expectations as the happy couple; you will not get to see a sky full of aerial shells but instead would be treated to a more gentle and wide-sweeping fan effect made up from ground material, single shots and candles. When done correctly they are just as dramatic and fill the sky with a similar presence just minus the noise! You could also consider having your display set to music and this really does make up for any shortfall in firework noise and is equally as dramatic! PLANNING SOS

A WEDDING JOURNEY

www.jpsinghphotography.co.uk

Q When couples book a celebrant service for their wedding day, how do you work with couples in the run-up to the event and on the day itself? A We talk (and laugh!) a lot! This is where designing and creating a ceremony that is absolutely ‘you’ starts. Choosing to have a bespoke wedding ceremony with an independent celebrant means that this moment will be the heart of your day; and to get it just right, takes a lot of talking (usually on Zoom), a lot of questions, both in our chats and on your questionnaires, and a lot of laughing from us all! If you’re comfortable enough with your celebrant to share all your stories and a smattering of your secrets (knowing that unlike the best man’s speech you’ll have full editorial control over what goes into the final script), then we can create a ceremony for you that’s totally you and will leave your guests wondering how long we’ve been friends! And that’s how it will feel on the day itself. Your celebrant will steady your nerves and welcome you with a big smile into that special space we create together, the one where you can stand up in front of your friends and family, open a window for them into the fun of your world and make some truly meaningful promises. Alex, Alex Hilder Celebrant, www.alexhildercelebrant.co.uk

WITH THIS RING… Q We’re thinking about making our own wedding rings but have no idea of the cost or process – help! A Most couples who come to make their wedding rings have no prior experience. I break the process down into easy-to-follow steps. I demonstrate each step before you go and carry out the step yourself. Because each couple wants to make different ring designs, I price up materials individually per couple, but I’m happy to offer a no obligation estimate for you. At the end of the workshop, you can take your wedding rings away with you provided you don’t want them hallmarked, laser engraved, or stones added. If you do want any of the additional services, I can arrange all of that for you and let you know how long they will take. Elizabeth, Elizabeth Anne Norris Jewellery, www.eanjewellery.com

Q I really want my bridal party to have a coordinated look; but with varying ages from five to 35 what’s the best way to achieve this? A Finding a dress that suits all your maids with different shapes, sizes and ages can be tricky. The key is sticking to no more than two variables, for example: different styles but same shade/ material, or same style but in difference complementing shades. For a fully cohesive bridesmaid look, we recommend the same dress in age-appropriate styles, thus creating full coordination in the same colour and fabric. Alternatively, a blended look can work just as well allowing each maid to select a style that they feel comfortable in but in the same colour and fabric – this will still offer a coordinated look whilst keeping your maids happy! Adding a hint of colour with a sash on an ivory or white flowergirl dress will complement your own gown and complete your bridal party. For that extra touch, coordinate your bridesmaids and groomsmen by using the same colour with accessories such as tie, pocket square and even socks! Fran, Birchington Brides, https://birchingtonbrides.co.uk

LET THEM EAT CAKE Q I adore flowers and would love our cake to reflect the floral displays on the wedding day. How could a cake designer achieve this look? A Sugar flowers are a fantastic option to bring your wedding florals to the forefront of your wedding cake design. As a specialist in ultra realistic sugar flowers, I can recreate your wedding blooms in sugar to adorn your wedding cake and 95% of the wedding cakes I create have some element of floral aspect to them. Liaising directly with your florist means that I can match your flowers, colours and style of the arrangements perfectly through my beautifully created sugar floristry. Sugar flowers also give you the ability to have your cake decorated without any concerns regarding food safety. There are many fresh varities that are considered poisonous and should never be placed on your wedding cake but made from sugar there are no limitations to the design you can choose. Another way that I love to incorporate florals into my cake designs is using cocoa butter painting and palette knife techniques − different styles of painting are a perfect way to mirror your displays. As every cake I create is fully bespoke, I tailor my painted designs to seamlessly reflect my couples’ wedding flowers and often also combine this 2D-style alongside beautifully crafted sugar flowers for the ultimate floral extravaganza. ELIZABETH ANNE NORRIS JEWELLERY, AWARDWINNING JEWELLERY DESIGNER ELIZABETH SAYS… About the company Elizabeth Anne Norris offers ‘make your own wedding ring’ workshops, just outside Sevenoaks in Kent. As well as this, consumers have an array of sustainably made jewellery collections to choose from. Finally, you can commission a unique piece of bespoke jewellery with Elizabeth, as well as have one-to-one jewellery tuition at the workshop. The finishing touch “It often surprises me how some couples place finding the wedding rings way down on the priority list when planning their wedding. To me, the wedding rings and the exchange of them on the day symbolises the most important thing between couples: their love for each other. Of all the things you pick out for your big day, the wedding rings are the thing that remain far beyond your special day. You may have found the perfect venue, the most flattering attire, drop-dead gorgeous flowers and mouthwatering food but, in my humble opinion, your rings complete

your ceremony. “At Elizabeth Anne Norris jewellery you can make your own wedding rings using recycled gold or silver. You’ll be guided step by step to make unique rings that you can personalise with a name, date or message inside − this adds an extra layer of sentiment to these symbols of love. “If making your own rings doesn’t appeal, I also offer many unique wedding ring designs to choose from on my website. So instead of tossing that carefully designed bouquet, contact us for the most beautiful wedding keepsake! The finishing touch “Your florist will do an amazing job of making your flowers look perfect for your big day, but what happens to them when the lights go down? All the thought, decision making and care (not to mention money!) makes it a great shame for them to be so temporary; preserving them after the big day in a beautiful frame will be a life-long keepsake.” Visit www.facebook.com/daisysimpressed | @daisysflowerpreservation 58

The finishing touch “Being an illustration-led studio, I love to portray magical moments through drawings. This comes through a lot in my wedding stationery designs in which venues and maps are very prominent. I always find it easier to draw rather than write, so I rely on my drawings to transport people through to the final destination. I often say that wedding venue drawings and maps are the perfect keepsakes for your special day, and I believe this will always be true. Not only can you have these on your wedding invitations, seeing a drawing of your venue or map will generate excitement for everyone receiving it in anticipation for your event, but once the day is over, you can have them as prints to encapsulate the magical feelings you had that day – almost as if they’re frozen in time. The drawing will be a moment in history which can be passed through generations as a family heirloom bringing a smile to everyone that sees it. “The happiness of your wedding day doesn’t have to last just for that one day, the drawings will create memorable forever keepsakes of the amazing celebration of love.” Visit www.emilyssdesign.com | @emilyssdesign

Crafted with care and creativity, adding personalised cocktail menus also allows for a thematic or seasonal approach, incorporating the couple’s favourite flavours, colours, or even the wedding’s overall theme. “Coming in a variety of different sizes from mini little signs at A5 size, perfect for propping on the bar, to large A1 signs perfect for that wow-factor at bar entrances - these signs give couples flexibility for incorporating additional menus into their day. We have an extensive portfolio of more than 250 watercolour cocktails to create a bespoke showstopper cocktail menu: from classics such as an Old Fashioned, Espresso Martini and Peach Bellini to a far-flung speciality such as a Singapore Sling or Lychee Martini. “Fingerprint trees have emerged as a unique and interactive alternative

to traditional guestbooks at weddings. Adding a personal touch to the celebrations, they offer a modern and creative twist instead of simply signing their names, guests leave their fingerprints on a designated treeshaped canvas. The fingerprint tree serves as a lasting memento of the big day, capturing who attended and transforming into a piece of art that the newlyweds can display and cherish for years to come. Each fingerprint tree is personalised with the couple’s names and wedding date and has their initials etched into the heart on the tree trunk. Couples can also choose from a large variety of different ink pads to match their fingerprint tree to their colour scheme. Fingerprint trees, with their visual appeal, are making them a popular choice for couples seeking a distinctive and personal wedding keepsake.” Visit www.ottie.co.uk | @ottiedesign

DE HAVILLAND MEMORIES, BESPOKE STATIONERY AND CALLIGRAPHY SERVICES, FLORRIE SAYS…

About the company “de Havilland Memories is primarily a wedding stationery company, brought to you by me, Florrie Warrener. My passion has always been to create, and when I started learning calligraphy, everything clicked into place. “As someone who has planned their own wedding, I understand the stresses that come along with it. You work tirelessly to make everything perfect and cohesive, and there are always unforeseen difficulties along the way. I’d love to be able to help save you time and stress by working with you to design your dream wedding invitation suite. I’ll work behind the scenes to make sure this part of the planning is as seamless, effortless, and yet still as exciting for you as possible. I’ll create designs that are completely bespoke to you, removing all confusion and uncertainty that might be met when using invitation templates. You can be sure that the end result will be beautiful, unique and exactly as you’d hoped for and more.” The finishing touch “Your wedding day is the biggest day of your life, and the little details are what really make your big day shine. There are so many ways to achieve this, but one of the most popular at the moment is to use calligraphy to elevate the experience for your guests. I’ve seen a big rise in requests for calligraphy, and it’s a trend that I don’t think will be

going away anytime soon. As a professional calligrapher, I offer a variety of services from wedding gifts to on-theday services. Some of the most popular items being handwritten place cards which also double up as a bookmark for your guests to take home. Another personal favourite is to have each guest’s name written beautifully on their invitations which gives just an extra special touch. It’s these little, finishing touches that make your wedding stand out and will keep your loved ones talking about it as something to remember! Even after your wedding, we can make something unique together by creating an artwork of your wedding vows – the perfect way to preserve your big day.” Visit www.dehavillandmemories.com | @dehavillandmemories 59

BEAUTY Q&A

Beauty

Q&A https://tomphotos.co.uk

Our local professionals answer your wedding beauty worries

CROWNING GLORY

#NAILED IT! Q: I absolutely love having my nails professionally done, but it’s left them in a bad condition. I don’t want to give up my little luxry habit, especially coming up to my wedding day, but how can I give them some much-needed TLC to counteract the damage that’s been done? I find it sad that a regular manicure has left your nails in such bad condition! A manicure which can translate to ‘care of the hands’ shouldn’t be doing this. I have four different stages just to take care of the cuticles alone! A manicure really should be leaving your nails in ultimate condition with a gel polish, as an extra on top, to make them look pretty. A manicure done regularly should leave your hands well looked after and totally nourished. Here’s a step by step look at one of my signature gel manicures to know what you

should be expecting: • Nail file and shaping • Push back cuticles • E file with a flame bit to remove dead skin on nail plate • Nip away all cuticle • E file polishing ball to smooth around the nail • Lightly buff nail smooth • Apply gel polish • Use a scrub on the hands • Wash off with nourishing cleanser and dry • Cuticle oil • Hand cream massaged into hands and arm

Q: I’d love to wear a flower crown for my summer wedding, although I’m worried about how it’s secured on the head and whether it will completely flatten the hairstyle for when I take it off in the afternoon/evening!

…and ta-dah! That will be one well looked-after pair of hands and don’t accept anything less!

We work with lots of brides that choose flower crowns for their big day. Flower crowns work well with soft boho styles that suit the vibe of the crown and don’t flatten when the crown is removed. We would add a slight bit of texture at the root of your hair to give us something to secure the crown onto with hair pins you wouldn’t see! We then show a member of the bridal party how to remove the crown without disturbing the style; the texture at the root is still there, so a quick tweak or shake-out is all it will need to boost it back to life for the evening.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: 2024 WEDDING TRENDS VENUE STYLING

A Welcome 2024! Always exciting to start a new year looking at new ideas and colours for the coming season; so what do we expect to see? Looking at trends both in wedding décor and in interior design, which always has an influence, the use of bold colour is expected to be big this year, with hues such as olive green and cobalt blue predicted to be everywhere. One phrase which really caught my eye recently, and I think beautifully sums it up, is: ‘decorate in a colour which makes you happy’. You deserve the day of your dreams, so make it to your taste, that way you will always look back at your images with a smile. Combine a warm, cosy palette of more neutral colours, then add in bold accents in your favourite colour, to give it drama and a more personal touch. Here (pictured) we applied that principle; we used shades of nude and champagne but then added accents of bold dark red, and used black stands and frames to add depth and drama.

www.olegssamsonovsphotography.com Venue: The Orangery, Maidstone

Q What do you expect to see in 2024 when it comes to wedding venue styling trends?

We also expect large statement floral installations and arches to remain big this year, replacing the more traditional backdrops, as they are much more Instagrammable. Claire Smith, director at Creative Venue Wedding & Event Styling 03330 112 841 www.instagram.com/creativevenue_ www.thecreativevenue.info

CEREMONIES Q What are couples doing differently in 2024 when it comes to planning their ceremony? A Three words: alternative, unconventional and pink! I see couples wanting to really push those concepts of an alternative and unconventional wedding, and truly make the ceremony central to the party and their celebrations. It’s an exciting time for celebrants as we can really get creative. It’s not only the ceremony, where couples are looking to be innovative, but they’re seeking out alternative venues too. It’s great to see more traditional venues, pivot and start to cater for the new styles and ways of hosting weddings. In addition to a party style ceremony, the colour pink seems to be on the way up! Yes, this particularly includes the guys − hot pink is hot! – this goes for outfits, décor and flowers. With a hint of orange, green and gold, your wedding is sure to really stand out − imagine those photos − so, funk it up by going pink!

STATIONERY Q We need some inspiration for our wedding stationery suite – what trends in the coming year can we be inspired by? A In 2024, with regards to stationery, couples will be looking to create a really personal touch for each of their guests. This means either offering more than just the place cards with their names on, or multi-functional name cards. I think this will be achieved by using place cards and also having a personalised favour or creating a favour and using it as their place name; for this I’ve seen mini-cacti used with the guests’ names on the pots! I think that a lot more thought is going to be spent on how couples can to make their wedding an ‘experience’ for their guests so that their big day really stands out and is talked about for years to come − creating little bespoke pieces around each individual guest is a fantastic way to do this. Florrie de Havilland, de Havilland Memories www.instagram.com/dehavillandmemories www.dehavillandmemories.com

MUSIC Q What are couples doing differently in 2024 when it comes to planning their wedding music? A It’s a little tricky answering that question, as trends do tend to come and go, or even last from one year to the next. However, what I would say too couples is to not be afraid to make more unusual requests for their favourite genres or specific songs when it comes to choosing their wedding music. One of my favourite weddings from last year, was when I was requested to play early house music and funk/soul. The music doesn’t have to just be one genre or another as a mixture balances a wedding and reflects the couple’s individuality and I’m happy to arrange and play any song! WEDDING PLANNING

A 2024 is set to be a year of fun, fashion and entertainment and as a wedding planner who puts guest experience at the forefront of her work, I’m here for it! Live performers are becoming a focal point of weddings and generally throwing a real good party is going to be key for our 2024 couples. Photography is leaning more towards the editorial style, with film photography also making a comeback. More brides are going to be opting for versatile or multiple wedding dresses to switch up their look throughout the day. With social media becoming increasingly important, there’s more emphasis on having Instagrammable, fashion-forward wedding dresses. So, aesthetics will continue to grow in individuality. Immersive entertainment such as audio guest books, 360-degree photo booths and selfie mirrors are also set to be highly sought after. Here are some more of my 2024 wedding trend predictions: •Champagne towers •Removable wedding dress sleeves and long gloves •Grazing tables •Sparklers and cold sparks •Signature cocktails •Wedding content creators •Sax players •Short veils 82

Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones reveals his skincare tips for grooms-to-be

O

ur grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones, to discuss male skincare. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their skin in the run-up to the big day? Research potential products and test them on a small part of your skin a few weeks before the wedding. If everything is good, work out a simple routine of cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising, and try to add in a weekly mask to help get your skin in shape for the big day. Keep to a routine that works for you, and drink plenty of water, as it will help massively. On the big day, use a face spray to refresh the skin in case you get a bit hot and nervous. It’s also good at taking away any oiliness or shine. Do you have a skincare routine you would recommend? I always use a face wash, followed by a clarifying toner, serum and moisturiser. My routine is pretty straightforward, and it suits my skin and its needs. I use the Shakeup Face 4Ward Multi-Action Facial Wash, the brilliant Face 4Ward Pro-Youth Serum, and the trusty Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick. I’m also obsessed with the Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream. With a new baby and a Strictly schedule, it’s certainly helping me look like I’ve had a good night’s sleep when I haven’t. Throughout the day, I use a moisturiser or

face spray to keep my skin soft and hydrated, and then in the evening, I follow the same process. A couple of nights a week, I like to use the You Do the Mask Purifying Clay Mask from Shakeup to help banish any buildup and blemishes. Tell us about your own healthy living regime. How do you stay fit and healthy in between series and tours? Well, honestly, this is something I struggled with in the past, as you just want to rest and recover. But now I’m finding that the best way to recover is with active recovery, which means I continue in the gym but with strength and mobility because my body needs to be able to move. I’m a big ice and cold-water therapy fan, as I find it helps with my blood flow, and mental state, so I take regular ice baths and daily cold showers. I’ve also decided to reduce sugar in my life, but I’ll still have the occasional cake or dessert but no soft drinks. I now drink a lot of tea, black and herbal, plus matcha and as much water as I can, but I’ve never really indulged in alcohol or coffee. Eating the right foods gives our body the vital fuel it needs, and knowing what ingredients are in them and asking where they came from is just as important. You can still have a hamburger, but it’s about the quality. People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our skin? Great question, and one I am excited and passionate about. I truly feel that if we eat and

86

shop more locally, it will have a massive positive impact. I know this is not always possible, but I try to search for a local farm or farmer’s shop, butcher or baker. I’m also looking into how I use my garden because we can grow so much of the food that we use to cook. It’s all about using what we have. Nature provides food in its own protective packaging, so don’t buy it if it’s in extra cellophane. Just one step at a time, day by day, small changes can help. What products couldn’t you live without? Without a doubt, it’s the Shakeup Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick – it’s an essential, and I also can’t live without my Murdock Beard Moisturiser. The new Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream is also a must. It’s helping tackle those eye bags and dark circles I have right now! How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst the pressures of a hectic schedule? It’s really hard, but it’s all about discipline, preparation and balance. Plan your meals and prepare them because you can’t make decisions when you’re hungry or tired. Get enough good-quality sleep and spend as much time as you can being happy with loved ones. Is there anything you can suggest to calm the stress levels during wedding planning? A cold shower! It helps you feel less stressed and brings your blood pressure down. Shakeup products are available from www.shakeupcosmetics.com and www.amazon.co.uk

Ring-a-ding-ding How to choose the perfect wedding ring

J

ewellery expert Sach Kukadia from 7879 shares the differences between platinum, gold and white gold rings.

What is a platinum ring? Platinum is a naturally white metal that is both harder to find and more durable than gold. It’s used in a much purer form than white gold, which is why it’s also typically more expensive. The durability of platinum is one of the many reasons it’s a popular choice for wedding rings. This is based primarily on the common belief that it is entirely scratch-proof. While this is technically true, it doesn’t mean your ring will be completely free of blemishes throughout its lifetime. Platinum is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it a fantastic choice for sensitive skin. Unlike white gold, which is commonly plated with rhodium, the absence of these alloys in platinum jewellery means you can purchase it safely, knowing that there’s a low chance you’ll have a reaction. What is a 24-karat gold ring? The other option when considering metal wedding rings is, of course, 24-karat gold. It’s a soft metal, making it easier to scratch and dent than platinum. That being said, 24-karat gold is a beautiful metal that many couples choose for their wedding rings. It has a warm, golden hue that complements every skin tone, and its softness makes it easy to mould into any shape or style. As is the case with platinum, 24-karat gold is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it another great option for sensitive skin. It also requires less maintenance than other metals with just a polish every now and then.

your fingers are usually a bit smaller when your hands are cold! Keep in mind that platinum is a heavier metal than gold, so if you think you’d be uncomfortable with a heavier ring, 24-karat gold may be the way to go. Adversely, many people choose platinum over gold because of the added weight. Which one is right for you? Ultimately, the decision is completely up to you. Try both styles to see what will work best with your preferences, budget and lifestyle.

Budget Considering you will ideally be wearing your wedding ring every day, it’s a good idea to choose something that you really like and is high quality. Since 24-karat gold is more expensive than platinum, if you’re on a budget, platinum could be the way to go. Plus, if you’re a little clumsy with your jewellery already, it may be best to invest in something slightly more durable. Shape and size The most important thing is to find a shape, metal and size that you’re happy with and comfortable wearing. Due to its quality, the best ring metals are also the most comfortable. When sizing, ensure your rings are big enough not to be uncomfortable but small enough not to fall off. Remember that

A song of sun AND SEA

County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

W

hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.

ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.

you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

REST AND RELAXATION

FUN IN THE SUN

One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that

Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

94

HONEYMOON

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.

A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.

HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and

introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.
