We aim to support you from receiving your fabulous engagement ring until you walk down the aisle and dance the night away while keeping it local. Spring 2024 sees the launch of a beautiful new tableware collection from the inspirational Designers Guild, featuring one of the brand’s most popular designs – Ikebana! Infused with the refined yet dynamic spirit of the ancient arts of Japan, Ikebana celebrates the beauty of this floral artistry and the flowers within. Reflecting a fusion of age-old techniques and modernity, the original hand-painted design comprises beautifully painted flowers, foliage and butterflies arranged in an artful kaleidoscopic form. This joyful design has been delicately deconstructed and thoughtfully reimagined as a series of vibrant patterns in four contrasting colourways across the beautiful Ikebana tableware collection. The pieces will match different colour schemes, ideal for garden and spring-themed weddings. Designed as stackable place settings to be mixed and matched, Ikebana is offered in boxed sets of dinner plates, side plates, pasta plates, cereal bowls, teacups and mugs, providing customers with versatility, colour and creativity in their tablescapes. Founded by creative director Tricia Guild in 1970, Designers Guild is a luxury interiors brand whose colourful and contemporary designs are internationally renowned for their creativity and innovation. THE FINISHING TOUCHES Camilla Kirk-Reynolds unveils her bespoke permanent jewellery service, redefining the Notting Hill space. The chain-based line consists of delicate made-to-measure gold bespoke pieces tailored and fitted to each individual with few limitations. Opuluxe was created after Camilla noticed a gap in the market, with consumers being offered narrow choices and nothing truly bespoke. Her search for delicate yet durable pieces led her to believe she could create something new in the space as the choice was limited and often of poor quality. The company provides an incredible range of options, meaning pieces can be completely individual, from bracelets, anklets and necklaces to hand and foot jewellery as well as body chains. Camilla’s vision was to allow people to create the jewellery they wanted, removing intimidation from the design process and replacing it with a fun, affordable, and achievable service. The jewellery is a great way to celebrate and mark symbolic moments in life, whether creating a fun friendship bracelet or a piece that signifies a special bond between a mother and daughter. At consultations, customers will choose the metal colour and type before picking a chai from various options. The team will measure clients and decide how they want the pieces to sit before they are meticulously welded together while wrapped around the chosen body part. People can then add a unique connector or a charm to personalise the item further. Fitting time will depend on choices; a

bracelet fitting can take 5 minutes, whereas a piece of hand jewellery could take up to 60 minutes. Prices start from £90. In addition to Camilla’s Notting Hill studio, Opuluxe has a mobile jewellery service that makes it convenient. Perfect for birthday celebrations, hen parties or intimate events with friends. If some peoples’ lifestyles do not lend themselves to permanent jewellery, it’s possible to add a clasp so it can be removed. Discover: https://opuluxeuk.com 9

The area has swiftly become one of London’s most popular hangouts. Steeped in history and home to Spitalfields Market and Brick Lane with Shoreditch just up the road, the local area is home to many established artists and designers showcasing the latest street art scene. The historic streets next to the Church are lined with immaculately conserved Huguenot houses often used in films and fashion shoots. This cultural tapestry is woven together by the food and drink hotspots of the area. Considered by many to be architect Nicholas Hawksmoor’s magnum opus, the venue is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture that was fully restored to its original splendour in 2004. 22

perfect backdrop. The interconnected studios offer seamless changeovers throughout weddings, from ceremonies and cocktail hours to wedding breakfasts and reception parties. Outdoors, guests can make the most of the huge courtyard during the afternoons and early evenings. Lovebirds can have the option of dry-hire DIY or bespoke wedding planning and catering packages, so there’s something for everyone. The largest space here can host 170 guests for the vows and up to 200 for evening celebrations, with ample space for dancing.

The site is easily accessed with London Liverpool Street station just an eight-minute walk away, as well as Shoreditch High Street and Aldgate East even closer. The property offers versatile event spaces within this Baroque masterpiece. Each room is steeped in rich history and provides a blank canvas, ready for couples to add unique touches. As the central part of the Church, the magnificent Nave is a versatile space that exudes grandeur with clerestory windows, mezzanine galleries and a main hall accented with Tuscan columns. It can host celebrations with 250 people at round tables or 200 at long tables. A cornerstone of Nicholas Hawksmoor’s architectural gem, the lowerlevel Crypt was built along with the church in 1729. Contrary to what the name might suggest, this surprisingly light and airy space has been recently re-designed to incorporate the historic stone foundations of the original structure with modern oak panelling and heating. These iconic settings host weddings with 250 loved ones.

REAL WEDDINGS

D

aniel went to a summer camp with Camp America in 2016, which is quite popular while studying at university in the UK. He travelled to San Diego after his summer in Pennsylvania with some mutual friends of Laura, who grew up in California, which led to the pair meeting and hitting it off. They had a longdistance relationship for four years before Laura moved to London – they’ve lived together ever since. Daniel proposed with the stunning Jurassic coast as a backdrop. He planned a weekend away, which started with a breakfast picnic. The couple left their house in London around 4 am to drive down in time to see the sunrise, but the entrance leading down to Durdle Door was closed and ironically, it didn’t open until sunrise. Daniel quickly improvised and drove a little way along the coast to an area called Lulworth Cove instead, with impressive views of the entire coast beyond. As the sun rose, they were drinking coffee from a flask and eating when he got down on one knee! Laura comments, “I had a hunch he might ask me that weekend, and his improvisation ultimately turned fortuitous when we Facetimed my parents to tell them the news later that day! My mom said Lulworth Cove was one of my nana and grandad’s favourite places. We spent the rest of the morning hiking along the coast, before enjoying a lovely dinner in Bournemouth later that night. Daniel’s family had planned a surprise engagement party the following day, which was amazing and so special!”

SETTING THE SCENE The lovebirds originally wanted an intimate wedding followed by a bigger celebration in the US a few years later, but that evolved quickly into a more full-on celebration here in the UK. Throughout all the planning, they focused on ensuring everything was true to themselves and chose details that were unique to their love story and personalities without focusing on trends or traditions. After exploring a lot of venues all over the country, none of them felt very personal to them both. So, they started searching for a venue close to their home in London, which meant somewhere in Hammersmith. When they came across Linden House on the council website, Laura was excited and planned to meet the coordinators. They fell even more in love as they felt welcomed and supported from day one. It was the easiest decision they made in the whole process! Laura was in disbelief on the day; she couldn’t believe the wedding was finally here after all the planning! She comments, “I was very calm the entire morning! I started getting nervous but excited as we travelled to the venue where I got changed upstairs in a hidden room with about 30 to 40 minutes before the ceremony. The one person I wanted to see was Danny, which I couldn’t do as he wanted to see me for the first time at the ceremony – it was worth it!” Danny’s morning was a bit different; he got ready with his mum and sister at their flat before his friends came round for a drink on the terrace. He was in full host mode, greeting everyone and being the star of the show downstairs. He cried when he saw his beautiful bride walking down the aisle; they both felt excited and relieved once the ceremony nerves wore off. They snuck away afterwards for a few minutes, one of the only times they were alone together all day. It was so nice to be in their own space, hug each other and feel so in love! They had an amazing day surrounded by so many incredible friends and family. The couple opted for long U-shaped to create a one big family vibe. They use a combination of varied coloured bud vases along the tables as centrepieces to suit the seating arrangement and contribute to the natural, earthy and whimsical style of the florals throughout the day. The catering options included a two-course meal and cake as dessert from Luminary Bakery. Laura says, “I learned about this company years ago through a friend and had tried their cakes before, so I knew they could create a perfect, simple, beautiful and delicious bake for our day. The company is more than just a delicious and talented bakery; it’s a social enterprise that helps to create jobs and community while supporting women who have experienced social and economic disadvantage. They offer courses, work experience and paid employment within the bakery, empowering women to build their careers. By choosing Luminary to 29

REAL WEDDINGS supply our cake, we hopefully did a small part to help the company’s community of women as well.”

LOOKING THE PART The bride looked stunning in an Alexandra Grecco gown called Sabine, which she purchased as a sample dress from Lovely Bride London. She comments, “I knew I wanted a dress with a deep V neckline, an open back, a semi-dramatic train and buttons while still easily being able to dance. This dress was up against others but was another easy choice once I had tried it on for a second time.” The bride accessorised her look with a small diamond necklace, gold bar earrings and low nude heels. The most special parts of her outfit were borrowed, like her auntie’s veil, who brought the piece to Laura’s follow-up dress appointment. The satin trim perfectly matched her dress and was short, just the style Laura preferred. She says, “I felt so chic and happy with how everything had come together. I hadn’t tried on everything all at once yet until the day, and I felt so pretty!” Danny looked dapper in a navy and gold patterned suit with a neutral gold tie. Laura says, “I remember thinking ‘I’m so happy to see him finally’ during the ceremony as he steadied me immediately. I was so grateful to be standing beside him, holding his hand as I was so nervous! Danny remembers feeling incredibly happy and lucky when he first saw me.” The pair didn’t have a wedding party, but their sisters were witnesses, and both chose to wear the same colour independently and matched in the end!

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The couple hired a live band to entertain guests, which was one of their main goals. The team were incredible, and the dancefloor was packed as they played a fantastic variety of genres with plenty of classics that had everyone moving. “I didn’t want anything too modern, as I always feel it can be a bit too polarising for guests, so we stuck with the classics”, says the bride. Laura remembers being seated during the wedding breakfast, looking out and seeing her loved ones laughing and enjoying what turned out to be a glorious, sunny day along the River Thames. It was heartwarming to see so many people from their lives in one space together. Since the couple planned their wedding so quickly, many of the bride’s friends and family from the US couldn’t join them, so the pair planned to livestream the wedding via Zoom. Laura found out later that evening that Danny had forgotten the laptop at home when he left, and he only realised when he arrived at the venue. Luckily, the property isn’t far from the flat, and his sister could return to get it quickly! Another classic moment was with Danny’s mum, known for being a bit clumsy. Laura comments, “Midway through the meal, she leaned over to speak to me, but we couldn’t hear each other because it was so loud. She tried to scoot her chair towards me, but it got caught on a piece of the wooden floor, sending her chair backwards and her with it. Everyone panicked to ensure she was okay; thankfully, she was, but both of us were dying of laughter – it wouldn’t have been our wedding if she hadn’t fallen over at some point!” The couple’s venue coordinator, Tara, was incredible! Leading up to the wedding, she offered the couple so much advice they were grateful for – her experience was invaluable to their planning. She was attentive on the day, and nothing was too much trouble. The lovebirds felt so special and taken care of like celebrities! The mother-of-the-groom’s speech was a bit of a tear-jerker and had everyone laughing/crying. The groom also gave a speech to thank everyone. He managed to individually recognise each of their family and friends around the room – most notably, referring to his mum’s boyfriend of more than ten years as the closest thing he’s had to a father, which sent everyone into tears. There’s a photo of them hugging afterwards; it’s such a sweet reminder of this moment! 31

REAL WEDDINGS

We loved the Asylum Chapel for our ceremony and Brunswick House for our reception! Both properties were quite different from any venues we had seen before and felt right for us. The Asylum Chapel provided candles as part of our booking, so we had lots for our ceremony and used these again around Brunswick House as we felt it suited the cosy vibe of the venue.

We had walked past Brunswick House many times but had never been inside – we were blown away when we finally did! It’s like being transpor ted somewhere else with how individual the décor and antiques were in each room.

Winter WINDS REAL WEDDINGS

Lucy and Rob had a rustic wedding with a burgundy and navy colour scheme Images courtesy of Al Green Photography & Videography

T

hese lovebirds met in December 2019 while playing in a tag rugby Christmas-themed tournament. During the prizegiving and drinks celebrations afterwards, Rob fired a champagne cork at Lucy’s head to get her attention. It worked, as he managed to get her number! Rob proposed in September 2022, which was a complete surprise for Lucy! She says, “We went for a lovely dinner at Gaucho in London Bridge, which Rob had said was to celebrate a promotion at work. Afterwards, we walked up to Tower Bridge when he suggested we have a picture. However, he secretly asked the random passer-by to record a video rather than take a photo. While I thought we were about to have our picture taken, Rob bent down on one knee and proposed. Everyone around us was cheering, and fireworks went off nearby by chance – it was perfect in every way!” Here the bride shares details about their wedding... 39

We had met in London where many of our friends lived and made our home together. It therefore felt very natural to look for venues and locations in a place that felt close to both of us.

When looking for a ceremony setting, we decided the first port of call should be our local parish church. As soon as we arrived at St Barnabas, we were struck with how welcoming the team were and knew straight away we wanted to get married there.

We didn’t want our loved ones travelling out of London with the added expense of paying for extra travel and accommodation costs. We wanted the day to feel warm, cosy, relaxed and understated. We therefore went with a cosy pub for our reception.

We had rustic wooden light up letters from We Love Occasions and lots of curtain fairylights that we purchased ourselves. 40

I wanted the flowers to be bold but not too structured with mixes of burgundy, green and ivory. My bouquet was made by Bunch London and was wrapped in ribbon with the wedding vows in Welsh. I added a charm with a message from my late grandmother engraved onto it.

We kept favours simple and understated with small boxes of personalised sweets and heart-shaped mint chocolates for our guests to enjoy!

I travelled to the church in a vintage white London taxi with my parents before heading to our reception venue with Rob.

The Bedford were really accommodating, allowing us to veer off their usual menu. We had sausage and mash with gravy for main followed by sticky toffee pudding for dessert. My hair was done by Lauren at Adam Alexander London. She knew exactly how I liked my hair and it was perfect in a half up style. It’s a cliché but I felt like a princess and held back tears once I was ready.

I fell in love with a classic and sleek dress with a bit of sparkle! The sleeves were detachable allowing me to have a different look for the evening.

My veil was my something borrowed from my sister! I kept my jewellery simple with my gran’s drop earrings and LK Bennet floret heels in pale blue. Tied to my shoe was an enamel sixpence belonging to my granny. 41

I sing with a Welsh choir in London who performed before and during the ceremony – it was so special to have them there!

A few moments that stood out to Rob was seeing me walk down the aisle, bursting with laughter at the best man speech and the first few dances. It was quite simply the best day of our lives filled with love and laughter.

We had The Dukes as our band who were brilliant and got everyone on the dancefloor! A highlight was the dance off between the me and Rob.

Our dog, Derek, was Rob’s ‘best dog’ and he was waiting for me outside the church when I arrived. He’s such a big part of our life and just had to be there.

hoot coordinator Claudia Fox from Greenfox Bakery, alongside a talented team of suppliers, took the colours and styles from Piazza Italiana to create a modern Italianthemed shoot. The day was broken into two distinct setups: one a very classic look and one less traditional. The venue has the most beautiful ceiling, which inspired the colour combinations. The suppliers wanted to pull out the blues and golds, so they created a more intimate setup with this fun but still elegant colour combo – it was very Venetian-inspired. The less traditional set had a more paparazzi style of photography showcasing what a fun, less conventional London wedding venue Piazza is. The team was inspired by the biggest 2023 trends, including champagne towers, short wedding dresses and neon signs. London weddings sometimes have a reputation for being a little stuffy, but the team showed the venue to be anything but that! 45

PLANNING SOS

Local suppliers share tips and tricks to help couples create their dream day

P

Remember, communication is vital! Take this opportunity to work together as a team so the day fully represents you both. Don’t get caught up trying to please everyone else; it’s your day and your loved ones should support your vision. Consider the time of year and the season, as this can help dictate your colour scheme, type of venue, wedding theme, and venue styling. To help the planning process, our experts have shared their advice to help you achieve your dream wedding.

www.gettyimages.co.uk

lanning a wedding might seem daunting, but it should be a fun experience where you can reflect your style and personality to create the ultimate wedding. Get organised from the get-go. Make a list of everything important to you both and highlight any priorities. Knowing what you’re after is always good, but I recommend not just focusing on one style and ruling everything out. Start the planning process with an open mind and discover new elements and exciting ideas.

HAIR GOALS

One of the easiest ways for those looking to add volume to your hair is to put some layers in it. If you’ve got collarbone-length locks or longer, then longish layers are best with the shortest being chin or jaw length. This way, you take weight out of the hair but keep the length while creating body. Having a fringe put in is also a great way of achieving more volume. Because a fringe is made up of hair taken from the top of the head, you’re removing weight and pushing it to the front. Blow-drying your hair properly is a good idea using a small, round brush dry from roots upwards. People think a big brush is the best way to create the body, but a smaller size is better as you can get right in at the root, lifting from the scalp. Blow-drying hair with your head upside down is also a good trick. Remember, you’re trying to defy gravity, getting the hair away from the head. The MDLondon Blow with a large nozzle and a really good bristle brush will give you a fantastic blow-dry for a frizz-free shine and lots of volume! You’ll want to look for resin-based blow-dry products containing PDP VA core polymers, such as mousse, blow-dry sprays and hair protection sprays. These can go hard or a bit crispy, but as long as you’re constantly moving the brush while you’re drying, you’ll avoid the worst of this. Bear

in mind that you need some of that crunchiness as texture support volume. I love a product called Sugarlift by Wella EIMI. Dry shampoos and dry texturising sprays are good at supporting volume too. I use Umberto Giannini Texture Boost on myself and my clients. You can use it throughout the day, so if you feel your hair getting a bit flat, just flip your head forward and spray it in at the roots whenever you need to. Above all, you don’t want anything oily on the hair – no oils, no serums, nothing greasy as they’re heavy. Another good method for creating body is adding waves. Putting a curling tong through sections of your hair creates volume as it pushes against other sections. But if you don’t put enough waves in at the roots, the hair will sit flat, so concentrate the tongs where you want the lift. On the big day, put medium velcro rollers in your hair and leave them while you do your make-up. Try a bit of backcombing at the roots, teasing the hair with a wide-toothed comb. You could do one or all of these tips to help. I guess what you don’t want is unrealistic volume so that it looks like a parody. You want to find a happy medium where the hair is healthy looking, so I’d recommend experimenting before the wedding until you find that sweet spot. BIG-DAY BAKES

Pick suppliers based on who’s already done events or cakes you adore. To get the most out of the team, tap into what each supplier does best and what’s drawn you to them. You can give the team images for inspiration, but don’t expect them to recreate someone else’s work. Be confident that you’ll love what they do. It’s always a good idea to ask your suppliers for suggestions to get their creative juices flowing and ask them if they can add anything unique or different. Try and ensure whatever you order matches your personality. Whether the design features your favourite flavours, colours or a venue that means something to both of you, it will only make the day feel more special Get the cake delivered the day before the wedding at the venue if

wedding day and ask any questions. Schedule an engagement shoot, a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera and get to know your photographer’s style. It will also allow you to see how your photos turn out before the big day. Plan the wedding timeline with the supplier to ensure you have enough time for all the photos desired. Ensure to communicate any essential details, such as specific shots or any family members you want included in the pictures. By following these tips, you can ensure that your wedding photos turn out just how you want them and that you’ll have beautiful memories to cherish for years to come. PICTURE-PERFECT PHOTOGRAPHY

Planning your wedding photography can be both exciting and overwhelming. It’s one of the most memorable days of your life, and you’ll want to capture every moment perfectly. It’s essential to start your search for a photographer as early as possible to find a supplier you love and who is available. Consider your budget! Wedding photography can be expensive, so setting a budget before you start your search is important. Factor any additional costs, such as prints or albums. Requesting referrals from friends and family can be a great way to find a trustworthy company. You can also search for reviews online to understand what other couples have experienced. Meet with the photographer to ensure you feel comfortable, discuss your vision for the

possible. Ensure that collecting or accepting the cake on delivery is allocated to someone you can trust to eliminate stress. Give contact numbers to the bakery and people on the receiving end to ensure this communication doesn’t need to involve you on the big day. Always check what your baker recommends for storage/serving advice, as this can vary depending on the type of cake you order and the weather. You’ll want the cake to be left out on display for a certain amount of time. If you’re providing a cake stand or a cake topper, ensure you have told and checked this with the bakery before ordering so they can check measurements so everything fits! PLANNING SOS

LOOKING YOUR BEST

Inspiration is abundant online these days and although it can be overwhelming, there has never been a better time to find trusted industry professionals through their online portfolios. From our website and socials to any other marketing material you’ve seen on your search, we offer a vast styling portfolio. A good hair and make-up artist will have a professional website and a presence on social media with regular updates. Here, you should be able to get a feel for their style of work. Many suppliers now offer discovery calls to prospective clients; these are a no-obligation opportunity to gain a more personal interaction before confirming your booking. We don’t see a bridal trial as a ‘test’ or a ‘try before you buy’ situation. The trial is a dry run of the hair and make-up styling ahead of your day, carefully curated following an in-depth consultation while considering your dress, venue styling and personal style. We work together to ensure your vision comes to life in a way that’s authentic to you. Come prepared with lots of inspirational images; it helps if these are from your hair and make-up artist’s social media pages, not just a selection of random Pinterest images. Wear a white top with a neckline that mimics your dress to represent how your look will come together on your wedding day. Arrange fun plans after your trial to make the most of your hair and make-up. Book to go and try your dress on, head out for lunch/dinner with your bridesmaids and enjoy a date night with your partner – don’t just go home and take it all off to sit in front of the TV for the evening! A good skincare routine is not to be underestimated! So many brides have dehydrated skin and lack a proper routine. Hydration is vital when achieving a flawless and glowing bridal look, so prioritise your skincare routine, morning and evening. If you don’t know where to start, speak to your make-up artist or seek an appointment with a facialist/dermatologist. Prep your touch-up kit! Although you shouldn’t need to do much, there may be little things you need to reapply. Things I advise you to have in your kits include blotting papers, a pressed setting powder (Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Finish Powder is a favourite of mine), your lipstick and liner of choice. Finally, a hairbrush or comb if you’re having your hair down. It’s easy to get swept up in the stresses of planning a wedding, but don’t forget to enjoy it! This should be exciting and a time when you come together as a couple to celebrate what makes your love unique. Chloe Gottlieb-Hunt | Chloe GH Bridal | www.chloeghbridal.com

THE IDEAL SETTING

Firstly, set a clear budget and openly discuss financial responsibilities. Knowing who will cover what expenses alleviates potential stress and ensures everyone is on the same page. Establishing this early on creates a foundation of transparency, fostering a harmonious planning process. Keep track of expenses throughout the planning process and build a buffer for unexpected costs. Next, envision the look and feel of your dream wedding. Consider the non-negotiable elements that are essential to you both. Identifying these priorities early will guide your decisions and streamline the planning process, whether it’s a specific theme, colour scheme or venue. Timing is crucial! Secure vital vendors, such as photographers, florists and cake vendors well in advance to ensure you get your preferred choices. Booking early not only guarantees availability but can also lead to cost savings. Communication is vital as well; regularly check in with vendors. On the wedding day, enjoy the moment. Delegate tasks to trusted individuals, allowing you to focus on the celebrations. Layla Jensen | Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill www.hyatt.com

SKINCARE 101 with Adele O ’Donoghue

Holistic therapist and SBC Skincare’s head of education shares her ultimate guide to wedding-prep skincare

A

dele O’Donoghue has gained more than 20 years’ experience working in the skincare industry, which for her all began when she trained as a holistic therapist. During her time practising the valuable techniques she learned, she felt a passion to share her practical, relatable and affordable beauty tips, which is just what she gets to do as a regular guest presenter at QVC and TVSN. Plus, as head of education for SBC Skincare she strives to ensure the brand brings relatable conversations to the forefront, ensuring everyone feels understood

and included. So, who better to turn to for advice on handling wedding stress and the toll that can take on your body, as well as on achieving that flawless complexion in time for the big day? Beauty and wellness editor Kelly Andrews quizzed Adele in search of answers. What do you love about SBC, what makes it different? SBC is a small independent British skincare brand that has an exceptional reputation within the industry. We’ve been supplying skincare solutions to the professionals for over 30 years. The trust and reputation we’ve built over that time makes me extremely proud. Every formula is made in small batches in the UK, which gives us complete ingredient traceability and quality control. SBC Skincare remains an affordable, luxurious brand with exceptional customer loyalty built upon results. What are your top skincare tips for our brides-to-be? Wherever possible, begin to take care of your skin and wellbeing sooner rather than later. Don’t make dramatic last-minute changes a few weeks before your wedding that may cause a reaction. Great results don’t rely on one facial the week before your wedding but on consistent care over a longer period until you’re glowing on your day. Try to cut out overly processed foods too. Eat a diet rich in colourful vegetables and fruits, as well as protein, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Great skincare starts from within so eat your skin beautiful. How can holistic therapy help with wedding planning fatigue and stress? Holistic therapy doesn’t have to be complex or reserved for expensive retreats. Simply having an awareness that our everyday rituals including the small habits and thought patterns could have an impact on our emotional and physical wellbeing can improve our stress levels. Taking the time to understand your own personal stress triggers and circumstances can help you to adjust to a demanding lifestyle. Changes to diet and sleep habits will improve energy levels and by prioritising yourself in these ways, your self-worth, mental clarity, and confidence will improve. 64

Breakouts are a common side effect of stress. How can we prevent and treat these so as not to jeopardise the look of wedding make-up? Try to prevent stress by introducing some self-care practices. Ensure that some of your daily exercise includes mindful stretching and meditation, yoga is always a great choice. If you have time before your wedding, try introducing a retinol into your regime. Considered the gold standard of skin care, retinols accelerate cell turnover to reveal fresher, younger skin cells and decrease congestion. Always apply in the evening followed by a broad-spectrum SPF the following day. Regular facials aren’t always within budget. Can you recommend a daily at-home self-care/skincare regime to perfect the complexion in time for the big day? You can most definitely achieve great results at home, make sure your basic regime is consistent. Always cleanse thoroughly morning and night, apply broad-spectrum SPF during the day and a daily moisturiser regardless of your skin type. Protecting your natural barrier is key to achieving healthy strong skin so look for ceremides, lipids and antioxidants within your skincare formulas. You can upgrade to salon-worthy skin care by introducing a weekly mask. I’d recommend SBC Hydra-Collagen Clay Mask to purify the skin, while combatting fine lines. To quench thirsty skin, apply one of SBC’s Moisturising Gels: Hydra-Collagen, Hyaluronic, or Propolis & White Willow for example. Use a thick layer to tackle specific concerns while hydrating thirsty skin. What are the biggest trends in skincare at the moment and what’s your favourite? I prefer proven results rather than trends, but I’m delighted to see a return to the clean skin aesthetic. I would, however, urge you not to feel under pressure to achieve flawless skin. Remember that your skin is the most incredible vital organ and feeling comfortable within it and learning to love your own is the real success. Enjoying the process of massaging your skin helps to energise and uplift you before your day begins, and think about just how therapeutic a deep cleanse can be at the end of the day. It all helps us to clear our minds and decompress.

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

Can effective skincare have an impact on mood and stress reduction? Feeling comfortable within your skin will affect your mood and stress levels, particularly if you’re suffering with a skin concern such as sensitivity or irritation. Finding a regime that not only suits your skin but brings back radiance and health is essential for your confidence. As we’re in the midst of winter, how can we protect and treat skin for the ravages of the season? Winter brings different challenges to our skin. The most important thing you can do to protect it is to apply a broad-spectrum SPF regardless of the weather. UV rays are around us 365 days a year and UVA rays that are present in light penetrate deeper into the epidermis where they disrupt the production of collagen and elastin.Look for skin care containing nourishing and repairing ingredients, such as propolis, rosehip oil and hyaluronic acid to protect and maintain the skin’s natural barrier that may be compromised by harsh winter stresses. Dry and stressed skin can really benefit from the addition of a balm, such as the Propolis & Honey Rescue Balm. Finally, indulge in some winter habits you’ll love! Our Arnica & Sandalwood Muscle Soak creates a warming cocoon to soak cold, tired muscles with a beautifully comforting aromatic.

unsettled, but a well-established sleep regime will really help. SBC’s Night Rituals range is formulated with a luxurious sleep-inducing fragrance and enriched with magnesium and silk proteins. Wedding gowns with plunging necklines and open backs are on trend at the moment. What can brides do to make sure skin shown off looks its best. Exfoliation is the skincare key to that vital glow! SBC’s Glycolic Serum is a lightweight body moisturiser that contains a carefully balanced blend of AHA’s to gently remove the dry, dull skin cells on the surface of the skin to reveal fresh, young, and plump skin cells. It also helps to prep before any hair removal, preventing in growing hairs, and of course, if your thing is using self-tan, it will ensure a radiant finish. FLYING HIGH I always breakout after a flight; what tips can you share to ensure I look my best for our honeymoon? We can quickly transfer bacteria from our hands to our faces. Adding make-up into the mix that isn’t then cleansed off can wreak havoc with our skin and cause breakouts. As soon as you’re on the plane, remove your make-up as thoroughly as possible. A double cleanse that removes products and balances your skin’s PH balance is ideal. Many brands produce minis that are ideal for taking onboard, and it’s a great chance to use your time wisely to kickstart your holiday with self-care. On a flight when your skin is prone to dryness, add a moisturising hyaluronic-based gel or serum to provide your skin with the moisture it needs without using anything too heavy, which could clog pores. Many of us forget to apply SPF on the way to our sun-drenched destination, but did you know SPF is just as important on the flight as it is when you land? UV radiation can be as high as ground level, so ensure you apply a good quality SPF 50. As well as using this on your face, apply a lip balm and hand cream containing SPF to hydrate those areas too. Now you’re in holiday mode; it’s a great time to relax as much as possible and enjoy the journey by creating your own spa-like experience on the plane. Give yourself a mini facial by applying a hydrating sheet mask, setting the mood with essential oils, and enjoying a deep clean with a luxurious cleanser. Play a relaxing playlist to take your spa experience one step further for maximum relaxation. Cleanse your face as soon as you reach the hotel or, even better, right after landing. If you’re prone to breakouts and have oily skin, apply a salicylic acid after cleansing. Then use a hyaluronic-based moisturiser and, of course, SPF 50. I’m getting extensions for the first time; what advice can you share to ensure my locks look their best for my wedding? We’ve all encountered a hair extension disaster in the shape of matted or frazzled extensions, but these can be avoided with a decent amount of aftercare to keep everything looking gorgeous and prevent damage to your natural hair. Once your extensions are fitted, wait 24 hours after application to wash your hair and always brush your locks before shampooing to avoid tangling. When washing your own hair, always do this standing upright and never in the bath upside down – this helps prevent any excess weight from pulling at your extensions and the root of your hair. If you’re going to sleep or hitting the gym, loosely tie up your mane. Too tight, and you’ll risk pulling on the bonds. Sleeping with your locks down can cause unwanted matting and tangles, so try to stay consistent with keeping hair tied up no matter how tempting it is to let it down! Use a soft brush when brushing your hair gently to ensure you don’t damage or break the bonds. You can hold onto hair for extra support. Ensure to brush over nano-bond extensions and separate them from natural hair to prevent matting at the roots. Never backcomb; this will matt and tangle your extensions. Use hair products formulated for extensions – your stylist can recommend these. Keep your heat tools away from bonds or tape because these could melt if heat comes into contact. Don’t DIY; always have a stylist remove your hair extensions. Tyler Moore | Live True London | https://livetruelondon.com 67

HOT TOPIC Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

RING-A-DING-DING What advice can you share when it comes to finding the perfect wedding rings? When choosing the perfect wedding band, there are a few factors to consider. Firstly, the piece must match the same hardness of the metal your engagement ring is crafted in. For instance, platinum, palladium, gold and silver all differ on the scale. If you were to wear two different metals together, it could damage the softer ring over time. Therefore, ensure you pick the same durability as your engagement ring to avoid the rings scratching. Furthermore, you need to consider the design of your engagement ring, as you’ll want this to be neatly stacked with the wedding band on your finger. This is possible with a traditional piece if your engagement ring is a standard round-cut single diamond or if

you have a wed-fit style, where the rings are designed to fit next to a traditional wedding ring perfectly. However, if your stone is cut into a different shape, like a pear and marquise style or features a halo design, this may prevent the rings from sitting perfectly together. Therefore, you may need to opt for a different design, like a wishbone style. Try on different-shaped bands to ensure you find the right one. Finally, the width of your wedding band should complement your finger size. The best width for women ranges between 1.6mm and 4mm, while men opt for anywhere between 4mm and 7mm. For women, it should complement the engagement ring as one too thick may draw attention away from your sparkling rock. Therefore, opt for a wedding band that has a similar width to your engagement ring for the perfect look. Expert team | Sacet | www.sacet.com

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE I’m looking for a bespoke bridal headpiece for my winter wedding; what advice can you share to help the process? Move away from sinamay pieces, as they’re not suitable for winter. We would start the process by chatting about where the wedding is taking place and the attire, which makes a big difference when picking a headpiece. It should not overpower your dress but complement the gown and your face while still making a statement. I usually prefer a more straightforward style of custom-designed headbands as they would be easy to wear with a long veil but still comfortable after a party. Most of my brides use their headpieces for other events after the big day, which makes it more sustainable. I like to use flowers but never in a way that would overpower the piece, emphasising on the shape of the flower to complements the piece and detailing without shades or colours but movements. Though if we need something blue or a touch of colour, I’m never against it! On the other hand, a cool fedora looks fantastic if you’re going for a suit. Never be afraid of having that cool look. Remember, simple is more of a statement than anything else. For those very light dresses, a plain and specially-shaped headpiece can look as delicate as the gown. For a simple dress suit and more of a court ceremony, I always go with a bit of a vintage touch, like a pillbox with a veil or a headband for that 50s/60s style. Some brides want to do a rock ’n’ roll wedding, and we can go all out on the headpiece to be the day’s statement according to their wishes. Every person is different, and it’s all about finding your perfect option. I always see my brides as my collaborators; I try to incorporate everything they want in the piece while ensuring it still complements their look. Ultimately, it’s their day, and the most important thing is they feel happy and confident with the piece. Merve Bayindir | Merve Bayindir | www.mervebayindir.com 69

NOW THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT We’re thinking of booking our entertainment, but we’re a bit worried about booking someone online that we’ve never met. Do you have any suggestions? See the entertainer live if an opportunity arrives, although most function bands don’t play public gigs. If this isn’t possible, have a video call with the band leader, booker or entertainer to get a feeling about them. That way, you’ll get a more personalised approach, while ensuring you can achieve your dream wedding. You can also ask to see videos of the team performing live to get a taste of what they offer newlyweds. Javier Moreno | Los Amigos | www.losamigosband.co.uk

We’re getting married next year and want the perfect confetti shot! What advice can you share? For a stunning confetti shot, always opt for biodegradable confetti such as natural petals or paper confetti. Both are great options for your special day. However, paper is best for photos as it falls slowly, allowing maximum time to capture gorgeous shots. Decide in advance when and where to take your confetti photos. For example, you might like to have confetti thrown as you exit the ceremony, save it until later on the dancefloor, or both! Either way, let your photographer know so they can coordinate your guests and be in the best position to capture the magic. Once your big day arrives, it’s a great idea to set up a confetti station or place confetti-filled envelopes on guests’ seats to encourage everyone to get involved. A handy tip is to remind guests to throw up high and overhead as you walk by so the confetti gently cascades down around them. Above all else, remember to smile, have fun and soak up your special moment. That way, you’ll have the most awesome confetti photos to cherish for life! WEDDING NERVOUS I’m getting nervous about my wedding speech as I hate public speaking! What advice can you share with me? Speeches can sprawl quickly when you’re trying to cover so much, making them difficult to follow. When planning your speech, it’s helpful to throw many ideas around but then focus on an overall theme or approach. This could be a personality trait, a great joke or a more heartfelt approach. When it comes to content, remember to keep it clean and universal. By all means, poke fun at your subject with a glint in your eye, but consider who may be present and keep the shaming stories for another time. Similarly, consider what your audience can relate to. No one wants to sit through five-minutes of private jokes they don’t understand! It’s challenging to distil a friendship or relationship into a couple of minutes, but you will be thanked for this – I recommend three to five minutes and no more than eight. The groom or bride can allow themselves longer. A clear, tight structure will help you deliver a brilliant speech and leave everyone wanting more. This is equally important on the day itself; do not go off script and meander through your thoughts. If you lose your place, you can pause and refer to your notes, but do not freestyle and make it up as you go along. I have never seen a long wedding speech that has been well received. Listen and respond to other speeches; this is a slightly harder tip to follow, but it will make your speech seem authentic and give it a place among the celebrations. Rehearse enough so you know the overall structure and points off by heart, and then use notes as a guide on the day. Your speech will feel much more natural for this and help you look up and out across the room. Make eye contact around the room instead of with the floor before you, and don’t read off your phone! My acronym for putting the finishing touches on an excellent speech is

body language, speed and energy. Once you’ve written your speech, the crucial next step is to rehearse it so you’re comfortable with your material and delivery. Ensure you rehearse in front of the mirror so you can see how you deliver the speech. Watch for any nervous ticks and what your hands are doing. Remember to keep it slow. We have a habit of speaking fast when nervous, making it hard for our audience to follow. I suggest recording yourself so you can play it back and work out how much to slow down. It’s also essential to allow moments to pause for reaction and to take your breath or a sip of water. To avoid monotone delivery, work out the energy of each section in your speech and practise moving between different registers. This will help keep it exciting and ensure your audience follows along. INTIMATE SETTINGS

Joanna at Ribbon & Rose says, “The Depot is a cosy and intimate venue in North London that provided the perfect setting for this rustic event. The time of year allowed us to feature warm autumnal tones offset by some brighter pinks and oranges for a striking effect. Different coloured chrysanthemums, roses, dalias and eustomas worked well at the venue. For those after a similar effect, all the flowers come in some lovely different shades this time of year. “Table runners are an excellent way to incorporate your colour scheme while creating photographic opportunities. The table décor at this intimate reception featured greenery runners using eucalyptus and ivy, which gives the table a nice texture. This was highlighted on the top table to bring the whole look together. Tea lights and tapered candles in crystal holders are a great addition to any table as a finishing touch to give a warm and intimate atmosphere.”

www.sueannsimon.co.uk

Afia from Afmena says, “There’s a growing appreciation for the intimate weddings in the world of celebrations, where small gatherings become the opportunity for meaningful connections. Low floral arrangements that bring the beauty of nature to eye level play a pivotal role in achieving this, as with an intimate space, statement centrepieces can obstruct views and hinder conversations. Instead, opt for blooms that gracefully sprawl across tables, allowing guests to engage in easy conversation without the interference of towering arrangements that can dominate the tables and overwhelm the intimate setting. “To elevate the intimacy further, candles are an indispensable addition to the equation. The soft flicker of candlelight adds a touch of romance and creates a warm and inviting ambience. We strategically place candles amidst the floral arrangements with this occasion to enhance the overall aesthetic. A mix of sizes and styles adds to the visual interest. Taper candles in elegant holders can add height and drama, while tea lights scattered among the blooms create a whimsical and enchanting glow. In an intimate setting, less is often more. It’s crucial to balance creating a visually stunning atmosphere while ensuring the spaces remain inviting and uncluttered.”

Bronte from Amarante London says, “We recommend focusing on florals that create a magical atmosphere for an intimate dream wedding. Choose a colour palette that complements your theme and the venue’s aesthetics. Keep arrangements simple, incorporating personal touches like favourite flowers. Smaller arrangements can be best to maximise the impact without overwhelming the space. This can also be achieved by concentrating on key areas, like the aisle or reception tables. It’s always best to look at your venue and decide what parts you would like to enhance and then see what type of floral installation would fit well within the chosen spaces of the venue.”

www.tomgrovesweddings.co.uk

Afia says, “When celebrating love amidst nature’s embrace, an outdoor wedding ceremony is a delightful choice. However, the whims of weather, especially in the hot summer, can pose challenges for floral arrangements. The vibrant hues of summer blooms can add unparalleled beauty to an outdoor ceremony, but the potential scorch of the sun demands thoughtful consideration. Opt for heat-tolerant flowers such as sunflowers, zinnias, and marigolds. Roses, dahlias and lilies are also excellent heat-resistant choices. These resilient blossoms not only withstand high temperatures but also have a lively charm that compliments the joyous occasion of a wedding. “Secondly, hydration is vital. An experienced florist will work hard to ensure the flowers are well-hydrated before the ceremony, soaking them in water for a few hours before arranging to help them endure the heat. With outdoor ceremonies, we typically arrange flowers in potted plants to retain moisture better. Pots also provide stability in wind and can be moved if needed. This works perfectly when floral arrangements are being repurposed for use in the wedding breakfast area. “Lastly, while you may hope for clear skies when wedding planning, nature has a way of surprising us – especially in Britain. A well-thought-out contingency plan is crucial, and you will need to be mindful that in such a situation, you may need to compromise on your original vision for the design.”

Joanna says, “Matt and Shaleen had a lovely outdoor summer wedding at Bingham River House in Richmond. We suggest using lots of wild blooms and a mix of colours for this time of year. With the green garden setting, we could use a handful of June-themed colours. Delphiniums, lavender, roses, cosmos, sweetpeas and allium worked well. Consider using peonies instead of roses at this time of year, some Stocks as an alternative to delphiniums and some sunflowers to complement the summer outdoor theme. For some props, include some vintage doors as an effective feature.”

Bronte says, “For a dreamy outdoor wedding, we recommend selecting a cohesive colour palette that complements the natural surroundings of your wedding. Seasonal blooms enhance the overall aesthetic and match your chosen wedding setting. You can incorporate these chosen flowers into various installations, including arches, walls and centrepieces that can be placed throughout. When outdoors, a gorgeous wedding arch is often favoured as a stunning backdrop to the ceremony but can be just as effective as a part of the reception. Smaller arrangements are beautiful to add to the aisle or as statement pieces to the wedding tables.” 74

GRAND EVENTS

VENUE STYLING

Afia says, “At grand events, the venue’s sheer size demands floral arrangements that command attention. For such occasions, opt for towering centrepieces that draw the eye upward and fill the expansive space with luxury. Think cascading floral installations, grand arches and voluminous arrangements that make a bold statement. Regarding flowers, consider the grandeur of oversized blooms like peonies, hydrangeas, and orchids. These larger-than-life flowers add a touch of luxury and fill the room with a captivating fragrance, creating a multisensory experience for guests. Remember that there is no limit to what can be created with flowers; you can literally take your floral design to new heights. For example, you can elevate the grandeur by incorporating suspended floral installations that hang gracefully from the ceiling. Imagine guests entering a ballroom adorned with a breathtaking floral chandelier or dancing beneath a canopy of suspended blossoms. These installations create a visual spectacle and optimise space, allowing for unobstructed views and seamless flow. Also, consider working with your florist to customise some arrangements that reflect the personality and theme of the event. An experienced florist will need to carefully think through the logistics of transporting and installing such grand arrangements and make arrangements for proper care to keep the blooms looking fresh throughout the celebration. “Whether it’s a grand celebration or an intimate gathering, the nature of your event is uniquely elevated by the inclusion of carefully chosen blooms. As we have explored some important factors with floral design, it’s evident that flowers play an indisputable and transformative role regardless of the scale or nature of your celebration.”

Joanna says, “If you’re looking for grandeur, look no further than Morden Hall. Andy and Jo celebrated their wedding on New Year’s Eve with loved ones. Interspersed with lots of green, we used a very classic white and cream colour scheme to go with the venue. Hydrangeas, roses, spray roses, long ruscus and gypsophila were all featured on the day. To continue the theme, the happy couple arrived at a floral arch we put together at the entrance, as well as bannister runners up the grand staircase using the same flowers. These arrangements set the scene while adding the wow factor to events. Reception tables also featured lovely centrepieces with the same elegant neutral colours as the rest of the décor. Keeping arrangements tall, large and full of flowers is an effective way to match the look of a grand event!”

https://photos.everlastingmoments.co.uk

https://beatriciphotography.co.uk

Bronte says, “For a grand event, choosing a cohesive colour palette that complements your theme is something we recommend to start with. From here, you can see what installations are best suited to your space. Statement pieces like towering centrepieces and beautiful floral arches are preferred to create an extravagant look while maintaining the perfect balance for your chosen space. Embrace diverse textures and shapes for visual interest, and incorporate personal touches, like your favourite flower, to make every installation your own. Even for a grand affair, don’t shy away from smaller arrangements too, as they can bring as much elegance, especially to areas of your venue that prefer to preferevantly untouched.”

Ring-a-ding-ding How to choose the perfect wedding ring

J

ewellery expert Sach Kukadia from 7879 shares the differences between platinum, gold and white gold rings.

What is a platinum ring? Platinum is a naturally white metal that is both harder to find and more durable than gold. It’s used in a much purer form than white gold, which is why it’s also typically more expensive. The durability of platinum is one of the many reasons it’s a popular choice for wedding rings. This is based primarily on the common belief that it is entirely scratch-proof. While this is technically true, it doesn’t mean your ring will be completely free of blemishes throughout its lifetime. Platinum is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it a fantastic choice for sensitive skin. Unlike white gold, which is commonly plated with rhodium, the absence of these alloys in platinum jewellery means you can purchase it safely, knowing that there’s a low chance you’ll have a reaction. What is a 24-karat gold ring? The other option when considering metal wedding rings is, of course, 24-karat gold. It’s a soft metal, making it easier to scratch and dent than platinum. That being said, 24-karat gold is a beautiful metal that many couples choose for their wedding rings. It has a warm, golden hue that complements every skin tone, and its softness makes it easy to mould into any shape or style. As is the case with platinum, 24-karat gold is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it another great option for sensitive skin. It also requires less maintenance than other metals with just a polish every now and then.

your fingers are usually a bit smaller when your hands are cold! Keep in mind that platinum is a heavier metal than gold, so if you think you’d be uncomfortable with a heavier ring, 24-karat gold may be the way to go. Adversely, many people choose platinum over gold because of the added weight. Which one is right for you? Ultimately, the decision is completely up to you. Try both styles to see what will work best with your preferences, budget and lifestyle.

Budget Considering you will ideally be wearing your wedding ring every day, it’s a good idea to choose something that you really like and is high quality. Since 24-karat gold is more expensive than platinum, if you’re on a budget, platinum could be the way to go. Plus, if you’re a little clumsy with your jewellery already, it may be best to invest in something slightly more durable. Shape and size The most important thing is to find a shape, metal and size that you’re happy with and comfortable wearing. Due to its quality, the best ring metals are also the most comfortable. When sizing, ensure your rings are big enough not to be uncomfortable but small enough not to fall off. Remember that

A song of sun AND SEA

County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

W

hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.

ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.

you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

REST AND RELAXATION

FUN IN THE SUN

One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that

Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

84

HONEYMOON

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.

A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.

HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and

introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.

Viva España! Kelly Andrews experiences the finer side of life at Hostal de La Gavina in Spain’s Costa Brava

M

y name is Kelly, I’m 42 years old, British and I’ve never been to Spain. Never. How did I manage to miss out on the quintessential Brits abroad destination? Probably because that exact connotation was all I’d ever seen of Spain: Ibiza, 18-30 holidays, and all that jazz. It didn’t appeal. How wrong was I? Let me tell you, the breathtakingly beautiful Costa Brava could not be further from all of that. Having been on my first adventure to sunny Spain recently, I’m happy to report it’s now my most beloved part of the world, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to honeymooners, and here’s why...

THE GOLDEN AGE OF LUXURY Nestled between two secluded bays on the Costa Brava, Spain’s less trodden coastline, S’Agaro’s Hostal de La Gavina sings with elegance, luxury and old-world glamour from every corner. Since opening in 1932, the hotel has been patronised by stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age including Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Peter Sellers; and, for me at least, evokes memories of classics such as To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Indeed, Pandora starring Ava Gardner, Suddenly Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mr Arkadin by Orson Welles were all shot here. With 74 suites and rooms with sweeping views over the Mediterranean, its effortless style and second-to-none hospitality will give you a honeymoon to remember. Comfortably ensconced in one of the hotel’s 11 superior rooms, I was very much taken with its Mediterranean romance. The balcony terrace and its breathtaking view is something I’ll never forget. From the moment I arrived and swung open the doors, I sat there looking out to sea and would quite happily still be there now. It was definitely the most difficult farewell when the time came to leave. For two honeymooners enjoying breakfast here, surely there could be nothing better. The glorious shining jewel in the hotel’s crown though is the Royal Suite,

which has played host to Spanish royalty, celebs and honeymooners alike. Stepping through its doors is akin to entering a stately home. Designed in spectacular Louis XV style, the walls are adorned with wood and silks, while Sevres vases, only otherwise found in the Louvre, decorate the alcoves. The opulent, genuine Bohemian candle-glass chandelier is the sitting room’s centrepiece and looms large above the decorative marble floor. Of course, the large terrace spanning the width of the suite is a highlight, complete with loungers and patio set ready and waiting for lazy days sipping champagne and enjoying a bite to eat. The first free moment I got during the trip, not caring a jot for the rain (which we brought with us from Blighty) I made a beeline for the outdoor, seawater pool. I’d been excited to take a dip from the moment I arrived. Bobbing along alone in the bracingly icy, buoyant waters, looking out over the bay at sunset was an experience of sheer bliss. Of course, during the warmer months with the sun beating down on it, the pool will offer you yet another vibe, but this was heavenly for me! Alongside the pool, facing the Med, is the Gavina Spa. Its privileged indoor swimming area boasts magnificent views over the bay of S’Agaro along with a Jacuzzi, two spaces for massages and treatments, plus saunas and a small gym room.

A FOODIE’S PARADISE In nearby Girona, there are no fewer than 18 Michelin stars held between 12 restaurants, including one with three, and Hostal de La Gavina is very much part of that local foodie culture. Indeed, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Candlelight, is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Romain Fornell. Renowned for its exquisite haute cuisine menu, the restaurant combines tradition and modernity in its beautifully tranquil setting where candles flicker and piano music fills the air. I had the privileged opportunity to try the eight-course Spring Collection tasting menu, which was utterly unforgettable. Dishes included white asparagus, beurre blanc

HONEYMOON REVIEW

and caviar; tortellini of langoustine and foie with Nantua cream; and squab in two firings with souffle potatoes. All was expertly paired with unbelievable wine selections by the knowledgeable sommelier. Equally unmissable is La Taverna del Mar, located on the beach of Sant Pol, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. Let’s be clear, seafood is a big deal here, as it is for the region as a whole, and this eatery will bring you the freshest and very best. It was here I discovered Catalonian delicacy sonsos, or Mediterranean sand eel. Fried and crispy it’s delicious served with a chilled glass of local white wine. Plus, the serving of wild sea bass in a sea salt crust is a wonderful piece of theatre, not to mention the perfect way to cook fish. It’s also well worth trying Galician clams and red tuna tartare. In fact, whatever the experts suggest, trust me, go with it. I’ve never eaten seafood like it and given the restaurant’s partnership with local fisherman to deliver the freshest fare, I likely never will again. For a lighter meal in between dips, head to poolside restaurant Garbi. Its light and healthy menu offers many of the delights found in the renowned Mediterranean diet. The paella here is to die for!

on Carrer Ciutadans. For dessert the final stop was the oh-so quirky, Wonkaesque Rocambolesc Gelerateria. As I was visiting during Girona’s Temp de Flors (Flower Festival) they were offering new floral flavours created especially for the occasion, which had to be tasted! If you’re a wine enthusiast, a little further out of town you’ll find Clos d’Agon (https://closdagon.com), a 15th-century vineyard based around a picturesque historical farmhouse. Hostal de La Gavina has recently partnered with it to offer guests exclusive wine experiences. I met the estate’s Nora for a fascinating tour, where I learned of the vineyard’s own micro climate, which allows it to be ecological as the wind clears the humidity creating the perfect environment for its fruit. The grapes are all picked by hand so only the best ones get through at harvest time allowing the passionate winemakers, such as Miguel, to make award-winning wines. Although the aforementioned wet weather didn’t permit us to, you do have the chance to idyllically picnic among the vines, as you indulge in a glass of the wonderful Clos d’Agon Valmaña wine with cheese and charcuterie board.

OUT AND ABOUT

TAKE IN THE VIEW

Just one hour north of Barcelona and half an hour from beautiful Girona, Hostal de La Gavina is excellently appointed for exploring the Costa Brava. I headed into the medieval city of Girona for a culinary tour and thoroughly recommend a visit. Catalans are quite rightly very proud of their local dishes and delicacies, and during the tour I had the opportunity to sample many of them. If you’re in town, do seek out a xiuxiu for breakfast. Made from an old Girona recipe these sweet treats can only be found in the city and its surroundings. When in Catalonia it’s virtually impossible not to try some jamon (Iberico ham), unless of course you’re vegetarian or vegan in which case there’s no shortage of equally divine alternative local bites. Served with some Manchego cheese or perhaps some local Catalan goat’s cheese and a glass of Cava it’s a real treat. I became addicted in a very short space of time! Girona was originally a city of traders, which is a heritage still evident in the city’s food markets. With vegetables at least three times the size of anything I’d ever seen before and more fresh fish than you could ever dream of finding in your local Morrisons – anchovies, cod tartare, sonsos – they’re worth looking in on. Paella is of course a must-have in Spain, but if you get the chance, do try Catalan speciality Fideua, made from short noodles instead of rice. Packed so full of flavour, you won’t be happy until you’ve finished the dish! I stopped at L’Arròs &... for mine, an intimate seafood restaurant

For days when you’re looking to stay a little closer to base, the Cami de Ronda coastal path (www.camideronda.com) runs alongside Hostal de La Gavina. The entire 43-kilometre stretch would take around two days to walk in its entirety, but you can enjoy a gentle stroll in stretches however you wish. I thoroughly enjoyed a short 30-minute stint along the bay, with it’s breathtaking views of S’Agaro, the Mediterranean and the historical hotel with its folly, a particular treat first thing in the morning. So, there you have it. The Costa Brava is an idyllic corner of the world, a paradise for foodies, wine lovers and history buffs alike. Whether you’re looking to relax and enjoy the luxurious surroundings, or set out on an adventure to explore the region, Catalonia has so much to offer and Hostal de La Gavina is a dream of a base.

Parisian elegance

Part of the prestigious Oetker Collection, Le Bristol Paris is everything you could dream of from a once in a lifetime visit to La Ville-Lumière, The City of Light. Rachel Westall checks it out...

I

f a honeymoon with the wow factor is what you’re after, you’ve found it. The iconic Le Bristol Paris is located at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The hotel opened in April 1925, when the roaring twenties were in full swing. During that carefree and prosperous era, Paris attracted all the big movers and shakers from the worlds of culture and fashion: think Balenciaga, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Picasso, Mondrian and Dali. Over the years, famous clients have continued to parade through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: from Rita Hayworth to Charlie Chaplin. Today, photographers still anticipate who will be revolving through the entrance of this chic establishment. This fashionable location is at the heart of Paris, moments’ walk from Metro line Madelaine and walking distance to sights including the Tuileries, Les Invalides and Musee d’Orsay. When you want to rest your feet from city life, the indoor rooftop pool on the sixth floor makes this hotel a cut above the rest. Expect views over Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower. Utterly breathtaking. The spa, backing onto a courtyard garden, offers a menu of luxurious treatments. There are eight treatment rooms, including a private couple suite. What more could you want after a morning at The Louvre than a soothing, restorative massage?

HONEYMOON

PEACEFUL PARIS Did you know, Le Bristol was the first hotel in France to receive the title of Palace? This is a much higher honour than being a five-star hotel. The rooms really are the epitome of comfort – and they’re huge! Indulge in suites with beautiful Louis XV and Louis XVI-period furniture and original artworks. Vast marble bathrooms have roomy showers and deep tubs; many have dual vanities, Dyson hairdryers and plush toiletries. Le Bristol’s Junior Suites can be extended with adjoining Deluxe rooms to create more space for the entire family. Everyone is welcome.

WELCOME HOME Le Bristol Paris is a house of incomparable Parisian style and elegance, where you immediately feel at home. It has an extraordinary way of welcoming guests from the moment you enter. Expect warmth, conversation and even a sighting of Socrate, the resident hotel cat. For pet-owning guests, Le Bristol Paris is singular in its ability to welcome fourlegged family members. As a family-run hotel, VIP treatment is waiting for your mini me’s! Children receive a welcome gift on arrival, as well as special surprise in the room, and the concierge team can arrange a wide range of activities in and around Paris that are sure to appeal to young and old alike. There’s even a kid’s club!

THE SECRET GARDEN A favourite place of mine was the new garden - a hidden treasure where you forget you’re in the French capital. It’s an oasis of flowers and calm where each tree, shrub and flower was deliberately chosen with care by Lady Arabella Lennox – Boyd, world-renowned landscape designer.

HOME TO FOUR MICHELIN STARS Foodies’, there’s no need to leave your hotel. At Epicure restaurant, chef Eric Frechon, who holds four Michelin stars, has created a celebrated establishment that’s typically French and fabulous. White tablecloths and immaculate attention to detail, this is for special occasions. Secondly, there’s the less formal Le 114 Faubourg, for lunch and dinner, which also possesses its own Michelin star. Here, sample dishes such as hand-chopped beef tartar flavoured with anchovies, and potato wafers or Grenebloise style roasted brill, cauliflower mousseline with seaweed butter – mouthwatering. Furthermore, Café Antonia reflects a more spontaneous side of Parisian life, where you can enjoy breakfast, stop for coffee or enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine. Le Bristol really is a reason in itself to visit the City of Love. You’ll fall head over heels time and time again.
