Where has the year gone?

Is it me, or does it only seem like yesterday that we were ringing in 2022? Suddenly the nights have well and truly drawn in and the heating is very much switched on – and with it there goes a huge portion of your wedding budget.

Energy bill jokes aside, I, for one, love this time of year. OK, so you can no longer enjoy a beer garden afternoon with your mates, but instead you get to snuggle together with your intended on the sofa, glass of red in hand, talking of your hopes and dreams for the future. And, if you’re reading this, that means your current hopes and dreams are all things wedding – so let’s get cracking with planning the best day of your lives!

Starting on page 15, we’ve six pages of gorgeous North East wedding venues for you to discover, from County Durham’s finest, to hotels where you can say your vows before bedding down for the night. Next, head over to page 45 for all your wedding transport needs, before flicking to our regional spread on wedding fashion suppliers you’ve simply got to approach for your big day (p57).

Finally, speaking of big days, I can’t sign off until I’ve mentioned my cousin Jade’s wedding to his wife Simone, which you can read about in all its glory over on page 32. See if you can spot me laughing with my husband and the groom with my multitude of tiny chins – I should have kept my guard well and truly up knowing the photographers were on the prowl!

Happy wedding planning – see you in 2023…

Mark Lloyd, an international master goldsmith and fellow of The Institute of Professional Goldsmiths, is preparing for the Christmas rush from his Hartlepool jewellery store. With over 36 years of experience, Mark is now recognised as one of the best jewellery designers, making bespoke commissions for clients around the world.

Due to his popularity, throughout December you’ll see him opening his store from 9am-6pm, rather than 9am-5pm, on the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd of the month. “Most people work from 9am-5pm, so visiting the shop during opening times is impossible for many,” says Mark. “This gives customers the opportunity to come in outside of their working day.”

Mark and his team will also be offering a voucher code that runs from 22nd November to the 17th December, so be sure to follow them on social media to stay updated with the sales they’ll be running. That’s why North Shields wedding and party hire specialist Vanilla Teas is now offering an Easy Hire DIY Wedding Catalogue, packed with beautiful items designed to make setting your own big day up easier than ever.

“We know how difficult a time this is for many people planning their celebration,” says Vanilla Teas’ Helen Edwards. “The catalogue features items such as our unique chair drops that require no tying, or our beautiful new fairytale and princess range, which goes from box to table in 20 seconds. HOT OFF THE PRESS!

Engaged couples searching for somewhere to tie the knot should consider Newcastle’s Great North Hotel, which opened its doors to the public last year following a £7.5m development. Now welcoming weddings, it boasts a purpose-built function suite and three packages designed to relieve couples of all the pressure of planning.

Central to the hotel’s appeal for wedding parties is its Ouseburn Suite, with private bar, which can cater for between 25 and 80 guests and can be sub-divided to create a smaller space for more intimate celebrations. To aid couples planning their event, the venue has created bronze, silver and gold price packages, all of which include hire of the suite, reception drinks and a three-course wedding breakfast. Also included are a DJ and LED dancefloor, evening buffet, red carpet, and overnight accommodation for the bride and groom in one of the hotel’s suites following the wedding.

Packages start from £2,950, with the hotel also offering bespoke wedding packages. Visit www.greatnorthhotel.co.uk/weddings-at-great-north-hotel for more information.

Bowburn Hall offers Edwardian elegance at its finest. A pretty brick building, the Hall was originally a private home, where, much like today, visitors were welcomed with every effort made to ensure their comfort. An exquisite combination of traditional country house charm and 21st century opulence, current owner Ramside Estates has now extended accommodation into the hotel’s grounds with the addition of five new garden lodges, while a beautifully romantic garden pagoda provides the perfect location for outdoor vows. Its 20 individually-styled bedrooms are the last word in luxury, with crystal chandeliers, freestanding copper baths

and antique furniture – while a spectacular four poster bed graces the honeymoon suite.

Bowburn Hall can be hired exclusively as a wedding venue for the whole day, making for a very intimate atmosphere. The hotel’s stunning ballroom makes for a memorable ceremony and reception space, capable of hosting 160 wedding breakfast guests and up to 250 in the evening. The ballroom also opens out onto picturesque-landscaped gardens, perfect for drinks and canapés in the sun. Speaking of the warmer months, in summer couples can exchange their vows under an ornate garden pagoda, as up to 160 friends and family look on from their seating on the wedding lawns. For the younger guests, the garden also boasts an extensive play area.

THE ACT

of love

Faye and Jack’s treehouse wedding was magical from start to finish Images courtesy of Paul Liddement Wedding Stories

Faye and Jack met at London’s West End Stage drama school back in 2012. “Despite it not being love at first sight, we became close friends quite quickly and enjoyed spending time together,” says Faye. “It was only after a year of being friends that we became a couple, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

Jack proposed on a trip to Paris to celebrate Faye’s 21st birthday. “We went to Le Train Bleu for a fancy meal before going up the Eiffel Tower,” continues the bride. “I could tell that Jack was nervous,

which is unusual, as he’s usually relaxed. We got to the top, and, while looking across the skyline, Jack got down on one knee and proposed. I’d hoped that he would ask me to marry him, but when it happened I was overwhelmed! It was an amazing day and made my 21st very special.”

The couple set the date for the 22nd April, 2022, marrying at Alnwick Garden Treehouse. Here, Faye tells us more about their big day…

27 REAL WEDDINGS
Scan to view video

We decided a treehouse would be a fun venue to get married in, so travelled three hours up to Alnwick hoping it would be where we said, ‘I do’. It was idyllic – so we booked it there and then!

We placed a stepladder in the corner of the venue, with pictures of our parents’ and grandparents’ wedding days, plus one of ourselves getting engaged. This was important to both of us, honouring family members who were no longer around to see us get married.

My dress was Madi Lane Bridal’s Bronte design, a floral lace A-line gown with sweetheart neckline and off the shoulder detail.

I accessorised with a jewelled peacock feather comb over a chapellength veil; a diamond pendant given to me by my Great Aunt; and a sapphire and diamond ring given to me by my late Nan.

I carried a bouquet of roses, peonies, freesia, delphiniums, thistle and eucalyptus, along with some white peacock feathers. My bridesmaids wore wrist corsages with roses, gypsophila, thistle and greenery, fixed on pearl bracelets and finished with peacock feathers and cream ribbon.

We decided to incorporate a ‘rose ceremony’ as part of our marriage, where the mother of the bride and groom place a rose into a vase to symbolise the joining of families. After the wedding, we used the roses to remember my late Nan and my friend Paul, who sadly passed during the pandemic.

The centrepieces were made by my mum, using birdcages and filling them with faux flowers and peacock feathers. We also had sweet jars of pic ’n’ mix for guests to enjoy, while rose scented candles gave the venue a gorgeous aroma.
28

Jack and I wanted something different to a traditional cake, choosing cake popsicles, cupcakes and geo hearts, which were pretty but also practical for COVID guidelines. Instead of cutting the cake, we did a pop toast with our arms linked.

Jack looked incredible in his three-piece Marc Darcy suit and tan brogue- style shoes. I also bought him some commissioned cufflinks as a wedding gift to represent his maternal grandparents, who are no longer with us.

For transport, we hired a beautiful 1920s-style Regent Landaulette, decorated with ivory ribbons and floral decorations. It fitted our vintage souls perfectly, and I felt like royalty travelling to the venue!

My two bridesmaids wore maxi-length forest green dresses with off the shoulder detail and a ruffled split shoulder sleeve. Both ladies also wore a 1920s-style peacock feather clip in their hair, to tie the look together.

Jack’s two groomsmen wore their own suits but with forest green ties and cufflinks. We wanted to make sure that they felt comfortable and happy in what they wore, yet had key elements to match us and our theme.

We hired the band Borderland to play at our wedding, who performed everything from the 1950s to present day music. They also learned our first dance song, FallingSlowly from the musical Once, as well as Still the One by Shania Twain, for my dance with my mum.

We hired a bubbleologist as part of the entertainment – and are so glad we did! The pictures look spectacular and gave our day a whimsical feel. Jesse made incredible shapes and entertained guests by putting them in bubbles!

29 REAL WEDDINGS

There was a lot of uncertainty when planning due to COVID, so we organised the day to a 30-guest limit. It was amazing having a smaller, more intimate wedding, as we had all of our nearest and dearest celebrating with us.

Having wedding photographs taken under delicate pink blossom felt ethereal and magical. Our photographer, Paul, was outstanding, capturing the natural and organic elements of our wedding, while putting us at ease throughout the day.

I loved the fact that we did things unconventionally, such as having my grandad as our flower man, and my father in law being referred to as ‘The Lord of the Rings’, instead of the ring bearer. Those little touches made us smile and reflected our love story perfectly. FAYE

Who’d have thought a dog walk would lead to Simone and Jade’s happily ever after?

Simone

met Jade while out walking their dogs. “Jade had two foxhounds, Marley and Cruiser, and I have two jackhuahuas, Rupert and Hugo,” says the bride. “We often stopped to talk to each other, but it was a few years before we found ourselves single at the same time, arranging to take a walk along the beach for our first date. We’d only been seeing each other for a couple of months when lockdown hit, which resulted in me being furloughed from my job. Jade continued to work full-time, so I agreed to stay at his to look after the dogs as his usual walker couldn’t visit. It’s fair to say lockdown speeded up our relationship!”

The couple didn’t intend on getting married at first, as they’d both been hurt in previous relationships. “One day I mentioned to Jade that I’d seen a stunning pre-loved 18 carat yellow gold emerald and diamond ring at the company I work for,” continues Simone. “It was quite close to Christmas, so Jade asked me if I’d like it as a present. I said no, as it was an engagement ring – so Jade replied with, ‘well, let’s get married then!’ All of our friends and family were over the moon, as they could see how in love we were and felt we should have always been together.”

The couple set the date for the 9th July, 2022, choosing Great Ayton’s Howard Court for their big day. Here, Simone tells us more about their amazing wedding…

OUR DAY, OUR WAY

When it came to choosing a venue, it was important for Simone and Jade that their guests didn’t travel far. “In the end we only looked at Howard Court, as we knew straight away that it was right for us,” says Simone. “It was a very new venue and didn’t even have bathrooms installed at the time, but the owners had big plans for it – and we could see their vision. By the time our big day arrived it had been transformed into a stunning venue! We were also able to have the entire space to ourselves from Friday lunchtime until Sunday afternoon, with our families staying in the on-site cottage and two shepherds’ huts.”

With Howard Court being a blank canvas venue, the couple were able to choose their own suppliers and decorate as they wanted. “I loved this side of the planning and painted our ‘Welcome’ canvas myself,” says Simone. “I also decorated the venue the day before with a beach theme in mind. I used lots of white muslin runners, pearl cluster string lights, glass tea lights and scented candles on the tables, along with glass cylinder vases filled with roses and sea thistle, as well as white pillar candles and seashells. Outside, we used lots of storm lanterns, along with glasses filled with pink and white roses, baby’s breath and greenery.”

RING AND RING AND ROSES

Simone left choosing their wedding florist in her fiancé’s hands. “We used The Flower Box in Guisborough as that’s where Jade regularly buys me flowers from,” continues the bride. “I didn’t carry a bouquet, choosing a white orchid wrist corsage instead. My mum, Jade’s mam and my bridesmaids had wrist corsages of white roses, while the men wore white rose buttonholes. We also made our own rose petal confetti, collected and dried by my wonderful mum and dad from their garden. My neighbour’s daughter held the basket and made sure all of our guests had a handful ready to throw.”

When it came to weddings bands, Simone didn’t have far to look. “I work for Middlesbrough jewellery and finance company, Ramsdens, so was lucky enough to get our rings designed and made,” she says. “I opted for an 18 carat yellow gold band with half hoop diamonds, while Jade and I designed his ring together, incorporating our love of the beach – and his love of surfing. His platinum band features a sand effect on one half; etched in the centre with a wave; with the other half smooth like the sea.”

IT’S ALL IN THE NAME

As Simone’s only four feet 10 inches, she wanted a dress that complemented her shape. “I was looking for a design that was simple and classic, while still highlighting my curves,” she says. “I found my Stella York dress in the Joanne Kay Bridal Boutique, initially only going there because my mum’s called Kay –and my best friend’s called Joanne! As soon as I put it on, I knew it was the dress for me. I then went to award-winning milliner, Lynne Young, for my bespoke hat. I gave her a brief of keeping it simple, but with a birdcage veil. She sourced a crystal moon and star to add a touch of sparkle, which was also a nod to what Jade and I messaged each other every night before we moved in together – ‘I love you to the moon and stars’.”

Jade also looked the part on their big day, heading to Middlesbrough’s Bakers Bespoke Tailoring. “The owner, Paul, is a close friend, and has been in the business for over 40 years,” says Simone. “He measured Jade to perfection – and the fit was incredible. Jade wanted a slim Sixties ‘mod’ style, choosing a beautiful blue two tone fabric. He teamed it with a classic navy polka dot silk tie and handkerchief, bespoke Cuban heeled boots, and silver cufflinks, which were a gift from my parents. He also carried his mam and dad’s wedding rings in his pocket for luck. Jade’s dad, Peter, passed away a few years ago, so I never got to meet him. Having his dad’s wedding ring close to Jade’s heart was important to us both.”

EAT AND GREET

Food was another important element of Simone and Jade’s wedding. “Jade’s school friend, Matthew, is a professional caterer, and he nailed our buffet perfectly,” continues the bride. “Our friends and family enjoyed a delicious spread of salad and pasta dishes, seafood, Italian meats and artisan breads, along with a very popular hog roast. Jade also has a very sweet tooth – so I had to make sure that was catered for! We hired an old-fashioned ice cream bicycle, getting all of the kids invited to choose the flavours they wanted before the big day. We also had a rustic wooden cart filled with pic ’n’ mix sweets to enjoy, while our delicious wedding cake – three tiers of vanilla, lemon and chocolate orange – kept guests satisfied throughout the remainder of the evening.”

A good selection of drinks was also readily available in the form of Redcarbased horsebox bar, Mr Bentley’s. “Carole and June, who run the bar with their husbands, are friends from my running group,” says Simone. “Welcome drinks included Pimm’s, pink prosecco and bottles of alcoholic and non-alcoholic lager, which went down a treat. They even gave our cocktails names associated with us and our dogs!”

Then there were the other nods to the couple’s fur babies throughout Simone and Jade’s wedding. “Our invitations featured our boys sitting on the beach, and were beautifully illustrated by a local artist,” continues Simone. “She even gave us the original picture as a wedding present, which is now hanging in our living room. Our oldest dog, Marley, was quite poorly at the time, and we were so grateful that he still made it to our wedding. A couple of months later he finally went to sleep, and it means the absolute world to us that he was with us on the best day of our lives.”

LET’S PARTY

When it came to keeping their guests entertained Simone and Jade made sure that both children and adults were catered for. “I found a fabulous local company in Middlesbrough, Stargazers Tepee & Event Hire, who set up a beautiful bell tent for the kids to enjoy,” says the bride. “They filled it with plenty of cushions, throws, bunting and lights. It was incredibly popular with the little ones – and some of the older ones later on, too! We also hired a magician, Marc Dominic Thompson, who was a great addition to the day – and a real surprise for our guests. He kept everyone mesmerised with his card tricks and sleight of hand illusions.”

The choice of music the couple wanted for their big day was also a vital part of their celebrations. “Alan, the DJ, is another of Jade’s friends, so we always knew he’d be the one for us,” says Simone. “He put together an amazing playlist of Northern soul, funk and old disco classics, which had our friends and family dancing all night. We also had our first dance to Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together, which was very fitting, as it’s what Jade played to me when he first asked me to be his girlfriend.”

MADE FOR each other

Rachel and Lewis’s big day was nothing short of spectacular Images courtesy of Lee Scullion Photography

Rachel met Lewis when she worked as a barmaid in his local pub. “We had mutual friends but didn’t know each other very well,” says the bride. “I was good friends with Lewis’s brother and cousin before I actually got to know Lewis himself. It’s fair to say I was interested in him before he was interested in me!”

Lewis proposed on a surprise trip to Dublin. “We flew out on my birthday and spent the first day doing all the usual touristy things, including a trip to the Guinness Storehouse,” continues

Rachel. “On the second day Lewis said he wanted to visit the Castle, and after wandering around we went into the gardens. We started walking up some steps, and as we got to the top Lewis got down on one knee. I was so surprised that I shouted, ‘What are you doing?’ before I realised, quickly replying, ‘Yes!’.”

The couple set the date of 4 March, 2022, choosing Northumberland’s Newton Hall as their venue. Here, Rachel tells us more about their big day…

39 REAL WEDDINGS

Lewis

I wore the Maggie Sottero Rhiannon design. I always thought I’d wear a fitted dress, but when I tried those styles on, I didn’t feel special. Dani at Y.A.P Bridal listened to my feedback and pulled out the Rhiannon as a wild card. As soon as I saw myself in it, I knew it was the one.

We had to delay our wedding by nine months due to COVID. However, on our original date one of Lewis’s close family members ended up in hospital. It made us realise that everything happens for a reason.

My three bridesmaids wore pink Champagne fishtail fitted dresses, with scoop backs and belt-style detail at the waist. They wore their hair up and looked absolutely stunning.

We wanted a venue that could cope with a large party, as we knew our wedding would be a big affair! The Stotts are never-ending, and I have a big family, too, so Newton Hall was the perfect choice.

We asked our cake-maker to create a seminaked bake with pink roses and greenery as decoration. It was elegant, classy – and tasted delicious!

My bridesmaids and I carried beautiful bouquets of pink avalanche roses, calla lilies, anemones, astilbe, lisianthus, astanthia and eucalyptus. Our florist did an incredible job!

looked absolutely amazing in his three-piece suit, which comprised of a stone waistcoat and jacket with navy trousers and tie.
40

Our guests loved Paul, the swing singer. He had a wireless mic so got right in the midst of everyone on the dance floor!

After our swing singer the rock band The Firelight Opera came out to perform. Then it was time for our DJ! He made sure the dance floor was packed all night long with his Nineties and RnB tunes.

Walking down the aisle really stood out as an amazing moment for me. I’ll never forget the look in Lewis’s eyes when he saw me in my dress.

There’s nothing quite like having all your loved ones with you at the same time. We invited 107 guests for the day – and an additional 130 for the night!

Lewis works away from Monday to Friday, so his best man secretly handed out keys to some lads at our wedding. During his speech he said, ‘I know Rachel gets lonely when Lewis works away, but they’re married now, so you all need to hand your keys back’. Twelve of them came forward –followed by Lewis’s dad! It was the funniest thing ever!

Our photos are amazing. The weather wasn’t the best on the day, but Lee still made it work – which is pretty incredible seeing as the venue was also covered in scaffolding!

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

AN EYE FOR ROMANCE

Founded by MUA Karla Powell, Karla Cosmetics creates handmade, on trend, colour-shifting eyeshadows and has recently launched its Romance Quad Palette – get ready to fall in love! Two years in the making, this innovative palette combines velvety-soft matte eyeshadows with the brand’s best-selling multichrome opal shades seen in pressed formula for the first time.

Inspired by all things romance and love, these shadows evoke passion with complementary warm pinks, cherry-hues and deep burgundies taking you all the way from fun and flirty to sultry siren. Meanwhile, the formula means the product glides on with ease, and the ultrapigmented rich tones give minimum fall out and maximum impact. £69, www.karlastore.co.uk

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. The texture offers lightweight full coverage that blends in so well it’s virtually undetectable, and the smart doubleended format features a fine tip for precise application with a foam tip for blending. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. It conceals without drying out the skin, and with continued use can even benefit the complexion since alpha-bisabolol of natural origin is soothing. This is a must-have if you’re striving for that flawless bridal look. £46, www.sisley-paris.com

SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection. Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

PERFECT POUT

Can you suggest some showstopping make-up ideas for my winter wedding?

Winter is the perfect time to rock a statement lip, and a confident bride who boldly accessorises with a red carpet pout will definitely have the wow factor on the big day!

A fresh faced complexion with a striking pop of lip colour is a favourite with the A-listers for special events, and the good news is there’s a bold colour to suit everyone. From cherry red to zesty orange; pretty pink or vampy burgundy; choose the shade that best suits your personality and confidence level. You can even think of tying this lip colour in with your bouquet or colour theme.

Just be sure to invest in a matching lip liner, which is a must to ensure that your strong colour doesn’t bleed over your lip line, and remember to reapply your lipstick throughout the day to keep your look crisp and clean. After all, photographs are snapped all day long, and as a bride you’ll no doubt want to look and feel your best from morning to night!

HAIR’S TO YOU!

When should I start thinking about booking my hairstylist for my wedding – and do you have any tips for finding one that’s right for me?

Thinking about how you would like your hair is a key part of the wedding prep, especially once you’ve chosen your dress. It’s a good idea to start following wedding hair specialists to gain an idea of their work, as well as the styles you like, again taking into consideration your dress and the areas of it you want to show off. I’d advise booking a wedding hairdresser one to two years before your big day if possible, asking lots of questions first off, from whether they are confident working with hair extensions, if you use them, to the actual amount they’ll charge. It’s also a good idea to have a trial, discussing hair likes and dislikes as well as making sure you’re comfortable with each other. At my trials I also advise how to look after your hair in preparation leading up to your wedding, so that it will be in the best possible condition.

DANDY THREADS

Where? Guisborough

Why us? “We are award-winning tailors that offer a very personal service covering all ages, sizes and genders,” says Dandy Threads’ Nicholas HJ Langley. “When booking with us you’ll start the process off with an in-depth tailoring and styling consultation, focusing on your requirements to create the perfect outfit for you or your wedding party. Right now, we are noticing a shift from stronger checked and detailed suits to plainer or softer fabrics with sharper cuts. Colour-wise, blues are always popular, but hues such as greens, browns, fawns, rusts and deep burgundy have grown, making a refreshing alternative to a wardrobe that may already be groaning from blue suits acquired from a backlog of weddings.”

Top tip: “Focus on you first – you and your partner are the most important members of the wedding, and it is an opportunity to indulge and invest in getting a beautifully tailored outfit that can become a key piece in your wardrobe. You don’t have to wear the same as your party members either. They can be an element of your outfit, whether it be a waistcoat, a tie set or simply a buttonhole, so long as it complements your look. Because you’d never see the bridesmaids wearing the same as the bride…”

The current trends for bridesmaids centres around simplicity and elegance, with soft pink and sage green colours popular. Think an outfit they could potentially wear again for a special occasion and you’re on the right track.”

Top tip: “Comfort is key! An outfit might be a far cry from what you envisioned, but if it is comfortable and the person wearing it feels good in it then that’s all that matters.”

AMBLE BRIDAL AND PROM SERVICES

Where? Amble

Why us? “We design and make mother of the bride and mother of the groom coordinating millinery and outfits, working with the client to choose colours and shapes suitable for their style and figure,” says Amble’s Norma Arthur. “We can alter ready-made outfits, too, to ensure the perfect fit, adding secret panels to let out dresses, or adjusting tailoring, cuffs and hems on suits. We even have a dry cleaning service for after the event.”

Top tip: “Take a trusted friend with you who will give an honest opinion about what does and does not suit you. Also, from an alteration perspective, it is much easier to take something in or make it shorter than to let something out. Make sure you sit down after everything is pinned, as well, to see that it’s comfortable, not too short – and makes you look and feel amazing!”

EPERNAY BRIDAL

Where? Newcastle upon Tyne

Why us? “Not only will you find your perfect dress at our boutique, but we also stock bridesmaid dresses designed by Hayley Paige,” says Epernay’s Judith Wade and Laurie Barnett. “The bridesmaid looks many of our brides go for are dresses of the same colour, but in different styles and silhouettes that suit each maid’s shape. Another look we love is a lovely colour palette of dresses, that are similar in style but different shades. The important thing to consider is not to follow trends if a dress feels right for you and your bridesmaids –luckily we are on-hand to help and advise with any queries you might have when trying outfits on. Plus, the bonus of visiting us is that we are both professional make-up artists, too, meaning you can also book our make-up services for the wedding day!”

Top tip: “Don’t over shop – instead visit a small number of boutiques. Check out the social pages of the boutiques you discover, too, to get to know their vibe. Look at the designers they stock and their content, including their reviews, dresses and services.”

Why us? “We specialise in occasion wear perfect for mother of the bride or groom,” explains Evie Black’s Charlotte Graham. “We are a complete one-stop shop with bespoke private appointments, where ladies can try on as many styles, designs and colours as they wish. To complete each outfit, we also have many hats to choose from, and of course, not forgetting the shoes and handbag to match! We stock designers including Lizabella, Ispirato and Gabriela Sanchez, and cater for a wide range of sizes from 8 to 30. Trend-wise, millinery is still very strong, as well as outfits that can be worn again for other occasions, which in the current climate is very popular. What’s important to note is that lots of ladies visit us and think they know exactly what suits them – however, on many occasions they are totally surprised when we make suggestions, instead purchasing something completely different that makes them feel fabulous!”

Top tip: “Make sure your wedding party is totally comfortable with what they are wearing, so they don’t worry about how they look for the wedding photos. If a lady feels comfortable then her confidence will follow!” https://evieblack.co.uk

THE LITTLE SEAMSTRESS

Where? North Shields

Why us? “I make bespoke garments that are unique to the customer, and are made to their exact measurements,” says The Little Seamstress’ Raffaella Orazi. “My clients are involved in the creation of their outfit and can see their garment develop through the fitting process. Because of this I don’t tend to work around trends – instead each customer has their own vision of exactly what it is they want; and I am that person to turn their dreams in to a reality! For me, it’s all about your wedding party wearing something that’s suited to their own individual style. I’d advise against making your bridesmaids wear something they’d never normally choose, just because you think this is what they should wear to your wedding – you want them to be as happy on the day as you are.”

Walking in a winter wonderland

Want to plan a seasonal wedding but unsure where to start? We’ve put together a guide to help you create the ultimate celebration

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME

One of the first things you should do is decide on a colour palette. This time of year has some wonderful hues available, including greens, reds, golds, blues and silvers. Choose one or two and stick to them. If you try and include every colour, it may look overwhelming and messy. If you want to go against tradition, an up-and-coming trend that we’ve seen here at County Wedding Magazines HQ is jewel tones. These can add warmth to your venue and can be incorporated into your glassware, candles and cutlery.

DECIDING ON A VENUE

Picking a venue can be overwhelming, especially if you have a restrictive criteria. Look through social media and magazines to get some inspiration, and once you have an idea of how many people you want to attend and the area you want to get married in, you can begin narrowing down your search. The weather, as we all know, can be pretty unpredictable, so if you’re going for an outdoor ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan in case it rains or snows.

FINDING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

If you’re tying the knot in the middle of winter, chances are it’s going to be pretty cold. Take this into consideration when choosing your dress, as you might start to feel chilly in a sleeveless gown. Those of you thinking of wearing a suit, choose warm fabrics and colours that will tie in with your theme.

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Accessories are your best friend when it comes to winter weddings. Do you desperately want a strapless gown but don’t want to freeze? Opt for a cover-up or bolero to keep you warm. These will tie in nicely with your theme and look super cute in those all-important photographs.

70

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES WARM

If you’re worried your guests might feel the chill, supply blankets and slippers. A firepit is another way of keeping everyone toasty while also adding a fun element to your day. If you want to take it to the next level, supply some marshmallows – yum!

MUST-HAVE FLOWERS

Whether you opt for an arch, grand centrepieces, an oversized bouquet or a hanging masterpiece, your flowers will create a statement in your photographs. There are a range of wintry blooms to choose from, including roses, ranunculus, berries and much more. With a strong emphasis on eco-friendly weddings, ask your florist if their flowers are grown in the UK and if they use eco-products where possible.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE

If you’re big fans of Christmas like us here at CWM, why not lean into the time of year and incorporate aspects of it into your winter theme? You could add a Christmas tree in your reception room, have festive-coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, use reindeers as table names, give your guests baubles as favours or even ask Santa to come and visit the little ones.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Food is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, so it’s important to pick something that fits your theme and personalities. With the cold weather outside, think of warming dishes such as soup or a roast dinner. You could serve mulled wine on arrival and create a fun hot chocolate station for the evening.

ALL THAT JAZZ

ASK THE EXPERTS

Those in-the-know solve your wedding dilemmas

I want to surprise my husband with a jazz singer at our wedding, but I’m a bit clueless myself! What should I be looking out for to make sure I’m booking the right person for the job?

With there being so many styles and variations of jazz music, I would probably broaden the search criteria by looking for a singer that does swing as well as jazz. Why? These two styles go hand in hand perfectly, and open up many more options when it comes to choosing a singer. You also need to decide if you want to go with a solo singer with backing tracks – this is the more budget friendly option – or stretch to having an accompanist, such as a piano player, to add extra ambience.

I’d then start with a good old Google search, gathering a shortlist of three or four singers who you like the sound of. Watch their showreels and listen to any recorded music they have. Don’t forget, professional singers will travel, so don’t be afraid to enquire about a singer who lives elsewhere in the UK! Their fee may be a bit more, but if you like the sound of them, it’ll be 100% worth it.

BLOOMING BAKING

We love flowers and want to incorporate them into our cake. What should we look for?

There are several options that can be taken into consideration. If you would like your cake to match with the flowers your florist is dressing the venue with, we would ask to speak to them and have them supply some extra flowers on the day. This way, when we set up the cake, we can dress it with the same flowers and colours that you have already chosen, and the cake will fit in with everything else. However, with real flowers we would also have to dip them in a food grade wax, or coat the cut stems, so sap doesn’t affect your wedding bake.

You can also use sugar flowers on your cake. This option can be useful when specific colours, designs and positions are required, that are difficult to obtain with real flowers. This option, however, is more expensive, as these are made by hand. Plus, if there are a lot of flowers required, it can add a lot more cost to the cake.

Finally, why not consider silk flowers? There are some fantastic ones out there with no restrictions when adding them onto your cake. However, it can be difficult at times to match specific types of flowers and colours.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

I want to surprise mine and my fiancé’s mam with some custommade pearl jewellery as a thank you at our wedding. What’s on-trend right now that’s stylish but also traditional?

One of the best thank you gifts for mams has got to be a pair of pearl earrings. Pearl jewellery and accessories are very trendy at the moment, and this trend will continue in 2023 and beyond. As well as being trendy, pearls are also very classy and traditional and represent wisdom.

earrings can be the best alternative. The stone can be their birthstone or stone of the month of your wedding. Gemstone studs are a simple yet elegant option for those who like a little colour in their jewellery choices.

You can also let them make their own pair of earrings at a jewellery making workshop. This way they will treasure the jewellery they made and will treasure the time they spent together with their daughter and daughter-in-law – a double gift!

SNAP OUT OF IT

What are your tips for making sure the photographer we choose is going to take pics we’ll love forever? My maid of honour was devastated when she saw her own – and now I’m scared of knowing who to choose…

Choosing a photographer can be a very daunting task! One of our top tips would be to take your time, look at lots of photographers’ websites and work out why you like the photos that you are drawn to. Try not to be too heavily influenced by popular trends if they’re not really ‘you’, too. Next, reach out to those you’re interested in and ask if they can chat to explain a bit more about how they work.

Communication is really important to make sure you’re getting someone you gel with and will be comfortable with on the day. You may also be able to request to see a larger sample of their work, such as a full wedding gallery, which should give you more of an idea of what you will be receiving.

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.

Pure luxury

After hearing about The Belfry Hotel & Resort, an award-winning hotel in the heart of Sutton Coldfield with three world-class golf courses, 300+ bedrooms, multiple restaurants and a luxurious spa, I was excited to experience it first-hand.

The host of The Ryder Cup four times, more than any other venue in the world, The Belfry Hotel & Resort has gone down in history as the backdrop to some extremely notable golf moments and has hosted its fair share of famous names and faces. Less than 10 miles from Birmingham Airport, International Train Station, Alexander Stadium and Birmingham’s NEC, it’s surrounded by prominent local landmarks, and is in a prime position for any travelling guests who need a place to lay their heads.

A ROYAL WELCOME

Walking through the double doors, I was met with a stunning entrance adorned with rich fabrics and beautiful floral displays. Walking past the generous amount of guest seating, the white portico pillars and vibrant yellow neon sign for the Brabazon Bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the quirky chandelier that was taking centre stage.

The very helpful Ryan, who was working at the check-in desk, detailed exactly where we needed to go to find our room. As we walked through

the wood-claded corridors lined with busy event and conference suites, we found the lift up to the second floor in search of the Presidential Suite. The largest and most impressive of all their overnight accommodation, the suite offers a family-sized living room complete with comfortable sofas, a dining table, a mini-kitchen space with all the comforts of home, and two separate balconies with views of the world-class golf courses.

The bedroom had luxurious plush armchairs, a desk, a luscious kingsized bed, and quite possibly the biggest en-suite bathroom I’ve ever seen! Equipped with his and hers wash basins, a free-standing bath, a spacious shower cubicle, and two separate toilets, it’s safe to say you won’t be waiting for your turn to use the bathroom.

REST AND RELAXATION

Picking up our swim bags, we headed to the spa to try out the Fire & Ice Experience. Here, Michelle gave us a guided tour through the varied selection of 12 bio thermal rooms, all designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses. Knowing that this spa had been named a finalist in the Best Day Spa category for the Good Spa Guide Awards 2022, I was excited for the experience to begin. Starting with a foot spa and moving through the hot and cold steam, sauna, and shower rooms,

we experienced both the shock and delight that came with such extreme temperatures – it was divine! Our personal favourites were the Igloo Room, which offers chilled walls and an ever-filling ice bucket for a body massage, and the Aroma and Crystal Steam Rooms, both heavenlyscented spaces designed to cleanse and purify.

From here, we popped down to the iconic Brabazon Bar, which was crowned winner of the Hotel Bar of the Year category at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022, for a cheeky cocktail (or three) and found ourselves transported back in time. The bar, rich in bottle green leathers with portico pillars, showcases a breathtaking raised glass ceiling that is a sight to behold.

READY, SET, PLAY!

After hearing numerous tales of woe from my husband about how he’s always the worst player on his group golfing trips, we both jumped at the chance of hitting a few golf balls at the driving range.

Despite the brilliant Toptracer technology allowing us to see our flight paths and providing data to work on our swing technique, it’s safe to say that we won’t be challenging Tiger Woods to a match any time soon!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort offers an impressive selection of restaurants, each a little different from the other, and we were lucky enough to dine in the fabulous Ryder Grill. The buffet here is one of the most deliciouslooking and gourmet-sounding selections I’d ever seen, but since my hubby is lactose-intolerant and vegetarian, we decided to choose from the à la carte menu.

Having made our selections, we were treated to a stunning salmon, beetroot, and wasabi starter adorned with edible flowers and a vibrant carpaccio of tomatoes. The main course, generous in size, was a seared sea trout with garlic potatoes and a very artistic fennel bhaji. The highlight of the meal was the extra dessert that our wonderful waitress Annie brought out when she realised we were struggling to decide. We scoffed a chocolate torte, a cheese selection and a sticky toffee banana bread – yum!

Our night ended on a high after we made our way back to our Presidential Suite and fell into blissful slumbers in a bed that felt lighter than air.

We had a wonderful time at The Belfry Hotel & Resort and are looking forward to coming back soon!
