Tilgate Park Weddings YOUR VENUE YOUR WAY
OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS BEAUTIFUL WEDDING GARDEN • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • MAZE • Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings. THE WALLED GARDEN Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats. EVENTS ARENA At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away. Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Autumnal creations
EDITOR’S LETTER
Y
es, I successfully survived the summer – hurrah! To be fair, I don’t know if we can even describe the last few months as summer, but never mind, it suited me down to the ground! Now, here we are in autumn already. This season is growing enormously in popularity for weddings and is one of my favourites as I love to see couples getting super-creative with their themes and colour palettes. Think rich jewel tones, which are stunning on their own or used with pastels as an accent colour. Rust is huge at the moment. Oh-so modern, it comes into its own during the autumn months. More so than any other season, autumn immediately conjures up associated colours typified by nature at this time of year, such as the reds and oranges of turning leaves. It’s also ideal timing if you fancy something a bit quirky. With Halloween on the horizon, add plenty of pumpkins to your styling. What about carving your own romantic scenes into them to represent your unique love story and using as illuminated centrepieces? Gothic and enchanted forest vibes also work particularly well at this time of year. What’s more, the much-loved rustic feel really comes into it’s own when given a harvest-time twist. September and October are also awash with wedding fairs, so as well as being a lush time to get married, it’s the ideal time to flesh out your vision with supplier soul mates! Our sister brand, County Wedding Events, is hosting an array of wedding shows across the South East this autumn including one at Selden Barns in Worthing. Head over to www.countyweddingevents.com to register. This issue we’ve got three stunning real weddings for you offering a whole heap of wedspiration. Meanwhile, the county’s wedding entertainers and bridal boutiques, give us the benefit of their wisdom to aid you in your quest to put together your dream day. So, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

It’s all go at Cottesmore Hotel Golf & Country Club! The dual aspect, first floor windows overlooking the grounds offer swoon-worthy views across the golf course. Kate and Kate Celebrants are super-proud to be named in a 2023 industry list of the top 29 celebrants in the UK, especially since they're the only ones from Sussex! Kate and Kate say, “As we’re knee-deep in 2023 wedding season we’re loving meeting our couples, hearing their stories, getting a feel for the vibe they’re after for their ceremony, throwing ideas about and drawing on our many years of experience to give them the best wedding ever. In fact, we still love the whole process as much as we did when we started. We’re so thrilled that our couples thought enough of us to not only nominate us but follow up with votes of confidence in the form of five-star reviews and being in the top 29 celebrants in the whole of the UK is just amazing. We’re so grateful to all the wonderful couples we’ve worked with over the years, who’ve put their trust in us to tell their story and give their ceremony a bit of K&K sparkle.” If you’d like your ceremony to be award-winning too, make a date with Kate and Kate, via www.kateandkatecelebrants.co.uk
COUNTRYSIDE CALM The UK countryside offers some of the most dramatically beautiful and diverse retreats you could ask for when it comes to a spa escape. The most popular destinations have been revealed by Spabreaks.com, with East Sussex National Golf Resort and Spa featuring in the top five. All rooms in the contemporary East Sussex National Golf Resort and Spa overlook either the resort’s 18-hole championship golf course or the 1,000 acres of lush green South Downs countryside, setting the scene for a relaxing getaway with your best girls or your soon-to-be spouse. To keep in shape, the hotel’s Health Club runs yoga, pilates and studio cycling classes, after which a refreshing swim in the heated indoor pool will be just the tonic. Besides an aromatherapy room and monsoon shower, the main event here is the menu of luxury treatments, which range from an invigorating massage to a relaxing facial. A GRAND OCCASION
While visiting The Grand Hotel Eastbourne recently, I was able to pop in to its autumn wedding fair where guests could see this breathtaking venue wedding-ready in all its finery. Able to accommodate weddings of all sizes from 16 guests for a wedding breakfast on the Gallery to 250 reception guests in The Compton Room, The Grand had the whole range on display. I loved the intimate wedding area, with the Arundel Room set up for a ceremony, the Norfolk Room set up for a drinks reception and the Arlington Room set up for the wedding breakfast. Peacefully secluded along their own corridor these three rooms make sure you have the privacy you’d want on your big yet small day. Flutterby Events (www.flutterbyevents.me.uk) and Buds That Bloom (www.budsthatbloom.co.uk) had decorated the three rooms to perfection, with the grand banqueting table opulently adorned in gold tones befitting The Grand’s own décor. The Compton Room is the complete opposite. A real showstopper it’s truly reminiscent of the grand balls and dinners than must have gone on in the past. So, the fact that it’s now used as the venue’s biggest wedding celebration space seems only right. The opulent plasterwork, high ceilings and balconies only add to the sense of grandeur, and the space was beautifully decked out again by the dream team of Buds That Bloom and Flutterby Events. Here, there’s space for 192 wedding breakfast guests and 250 reception guests. It’s a space made for entertaining, and with the Hotel’s recommended suppliers this is well taken care of. First and Foremost Entertainment (www.firstandforemostentertainment.com), Twilite (www.twilite.uk), Letters in Lights (www.lettersinlights.uk), MTA Events (www.mta-events.com), Kevin Morton Magician (https://kevinmortonmagician.co.uk) and more, all seemed to have the 10
matter well in hand! Finally, guests got to experience the gorgeous Princes Room set up for a ceremony with gorgeous blush pink floral arch and on-trend dusky pink sashes draped around Chivari chairs, complementing the room’s gold and cream palette. It can host 120 guests for the ceremony, 77 for the wedding breakfast, and 120 for the evening. Helpfully, so you could imagine your dream dress as you walk down the aisle, Claire De Lune Bridal (https://clairedelunebridal.com) had some gorgeous gowns on display, with Celebrant Elegant, Maureen Marsh (www.celebrantelegant.com), on hand to discuss the “I dos.” Don’t forget though, should you wish to experience an al fresco ceremony with the sea breeze in your hair, The Grand’s newly licensed ceremony space in the gardens is now an option for you and up to 120 guests. You can find out more about tying the knot at The Grand Hotel, Eastbourne at www.grandeastbourne.com/wedding-venue-sussex

BRIGHTON Tie the knot in a local hotspot
ROYAL PAVILION, BRIGHTON 03000 290 905 | https://brightonmuseums.org.uk Brighton’s Royal Pavilion is an icon of the city and emblematic of its rich Regency heritage. This inimitable former royal palace offers a unique venue for civil wedding ceremonies and receptions in the heart of Brighton and Hove’s cultural quarter. After many decades of restoration, today it can be enjoyed in its original 1823 splendour. An extraordinary building, the Royal Pavilion is often referred to as a fantasy palace. Where there was once a modest house by the sea, George IV created one of the most strikingly beautiful buildings in the UK. Designed as a royal party palace, the purpose of the Royal Pavilion has always been to delight and enchant guests at every turn. Today, it continues to serve this purpose, both as a visitor attraction and as a remarkable wedding venue. The Royal Pavilion’s glorious estate is one of the few surviving examples of a Regency garden in the country. Designed to lead guests on a journey of discovery, the views have been maintained for centuries, ensuring these magical moments can be enjoyed by guests today, offering a pictureperfect backdrop for your big day. The Red Drawing Room is licensed for ceremonies and retains much of George IV’s striking 1820s decorative scheme, featuring distinctive dragon wallpaper and palm tree pillars. Not open to the general public, it benefits from its own private entrance leading directly from the Regency garden, equating to exclusive-use of this area of the palace. It can host 44 loved ones and is available for day and evening hire.
The Music Room too is licensed but available for evening hire only. Imagine exchanging vows in the dazzling splendour of one of the most spectacular and impressive state rooms. If you’re looking for a ceremony space to take the breath away, this is it! The extraordinary interior is lit by nine lotus-shaped chandeliers, with stunning panels of rich red and gold, supported by painted dragons. Meanwhile, the gilded domed ceiling is made up of hundreds of plaster cockleshells creating an illusion of height, making it hard not to gaze upwards as you enter the room. The Royal Pavilion can be hired for your reception even if you’re not holding your ceremony here. The King William IV Room is situated on the first floor of the palace above the Red Drawing Room, and offers an elegant setting for both day and evening receptions. With exquisite handpainted floral wallpaper and hanging lanterns, it also benefits from a private entrance, its own lobby and caterers kitchen. It can host 80 for a drinks reception, 60 for a seated dinner and 70 for a standing buffet. The Banqueting Room, which is available for evening hire only, is one of the palace’s state rooms and has hosted many opulent feasts for George IV and his guests. A glittering and extravagant room, it is quite simply awe-inspiring. From the huge mirrored dragon chandelier to the hand-painted wallpaper, carved wood edging to gilded ceramic lamps, no detail is left unembellished in this spectacular space. Your guests can enjoy evening dining around the huge banqueting table, laid out with porcelain and flickering candles. Here you can welcome 180 for a drinks reception, 90 for a seated dinner, and 150 for a standing buffet. It’s worth noting that as a historic building, the Royal Pavilion is not suitable for parties, and dancing is not permitted.

OLD TIME
Editor Kelly Andrews checked in to The Grand Hotel in Eastbourne to find out what five-star service is really all about
T
he impressive facade of The Grand Eastbourne cuts a fine figure, dominating the shoreline with its magnificent 19th-century grandeur. Often affectionately known as the White Palace, it was commissioned by local resident William Earp and built in 1875 at a cost of £50,000. It opened its doors as a hotel in an era when the upper classes ruled and loved nothing more than to holiday by the sea, bringing with them their entire staff and entourage. Having hosted a plethora of the great and good over the years including Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, Arthur Conan Doyle and King Constantine of Greece, the hotel today offers the warmest of welcomes to every guest to step through its doors. I was delighted to be part of this long tradition. The reason I harp on about history is that it’s no small part of the appeal of this incredible place, not only does it physically envelope you, it’s also present in the service and attention received before you even exit the car. There’s an old-fashioned charm in the way the staff look after you and I mean that in the best possible sense, as this is something that’s by and large been lost over the years. I’m talking about the warm welcome received by the porters as you drive into the car park and get shown to your reserved space, the staff who remember your name and wish you a ‘good morning’ as you pass, the fact that your luggage is taken from you at your earliest convenience and magically finds its way to your room, and the consideration for what you might need before you even know you need it.

LADY KELLY I found myself imagining myself at the upper echelon of Victorian or Edwardian society as I made my way through the lounges and corridors having left all my troubles and stresses behind. I could almost hear the sound of string and piano music drifting through even though all was quiet. We were being shown to our Master Suite on the ground floor by the charming Chris who seemed genuinely delighted to show us around, while I did my best to play it cool! The footprint of the suite was probably larger than the ground floor of my entire house! The vast master bedroom featured a king-size bed, and was definitely worthy of its title. I decided to sleep in the smaller, but no less luxurious bedroom, to save my mum the ordeal of my snoring and we both enjoyed a restful night’s sleep. The highlight of the suite for me was the living room. Beautifully appointed, its huge windows lining two walls offered views of the terrace and outdoor pool, allowing us to feel in the heart of the action. I left mum relaxing in the comfy sofa and armchairs, while I headed to the outdoor pool to cool off.
COOL COMFORT If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know by now that I... don’t... do... heat. So, on what was unexpectedly one of the hottest days of the year midSeptember, the outdoor pool was most welcome. The lovely spa with

European flavours. It’s no wonder that this beautifully tranquil environment attracts many couples, there were at least two celebrating their anniversaries that I was aware of. You can, in fact, celebrate post-vows in The Mirabelle. Able to accommodate up to 50 guests, it’s available to book exclusively for your wedding breakfast and even has access to its own garden, which can be used for reception drinks during the warmer months. If you’re both foodies, I’d highly recommend this option. I’ve eaten here several times and on each occasion I declare it the best meal I’ve ever had, this time was no different. What’s more, the waiting staff offer the finest service the hospitality industry has to offer.
its ample facilities is also well worth a visit if you’re staying, and with treatment rooms too, you can get in some pampering before the vows. But I must confess to only having a quick nosey as the 30-plus degree heat was beckoning me to cooler waters. I managed to grab a sun lounger and settle in – it wasn’t long before I got that summer holiday vibe. I’ve never been one for laying around a pool but for once I actually understood the appeal! If you tie the knot here in the summer, this experience is definitely not to be missed. Even if you don’t encounter the ridiculous temperatures I did, the pool is heated to a comfortable 28 to 30 degrees, so it’s as comfortable on cooler days as it is the scorchers.
C’EST BELLE! Feeling human again it was time to head to The Mirabelle, The Grand’s fine-dining restaurant. Since it opened it’s been recognised with several awards and accolades from the UK’s top food writers. Not only is it considered one of the finest restaurants in Eastbourne, but The Independent placed it in the top 50 best restaurants in the UK. Mirroring the seascape beyond its windows the décor is awash with Wedgewood blue and greys, creating an elegant and calming environment, which detracts in no way from its divine menu of modern
MUSIC TO MY EARS The Grand Hotel has a long and auspicious association with music. Debussy completed his Symphony Le Mer in Suite 200 in 1905, and The Grand Hotel Orchestra would broadcast live on the BBC from the Great Hall every Sunday night from 1924 to 1939. As well as music being part of the fabric of the place with a pianist tickling the ivories as you dine in either restaurant and live music in the lounge on Saturday evenings, there’s still a regular programme of music events throughout the year. Do check out the website to find out more on that. Never knowingly missing out on a cocktail, we made a beeline for the lounge after dinner. Having selected Sweet Opinion from the impressive menu, we settled in to the elegant surroundings to listen to a live jazz band and watch couples glide across floor, practising their best ballroom moves. This feel of a bygone era and ultimate escapism isn’t something you find just anywhere.

REAL WEDDING
L
eanne and Alex knew of each other from a young age when Alex played cricket with Leanne’s brother. It wasn’t until 2018 though that Leanne received an Instagram follow request from Alex, which is when the pair started messaging and meeting up. In July 2021, and by now a couple for three years, they booked a UK glamping trip as overseas holidays weren’t easy at the time. As Leanne had organised it, the last thing she’d expected was a proposal. They arrived in Merriwood, Devon, and unpacked before discovering their wood-fired outdoor bath and decided to jump in for a soak right away. It took a while to heat but there was a complimentary bottle of bubbly to enjoy while they waited. It wasn’t long though before Alex started pacing, eager for his moment to arrive. No sooner had Leanne sat down in the tub and taken a sip of wine, than Alex was there at her side, down on one knee. “After crying and nearly choking, I eventually managed to say, ‘yes,’” Leanne remembers. Owning a floristry shop means Leanne gets to see a lot of wedding venues week in week out. “I wanted one that stood out to me and also somewhere that I hadn’t attended for friends’ or family weddings,” she explains. Although she’d worked on a small amount of weddings at Brookfield Barn, she fell in love with it right away. “The outside lake ceremony area is to die for,” she says. Alex comments, “I didn’t know much about venues when I went with Leanne to view Brookfield Barn, but her smile said it all so I knew at that point that’s where we were getting married.” Decision made, the date was set for 10th June, 2023. Join us, as Leanne tells us more...
SETTING THE SCENE Given Leanne’s career, it was only natural that flowers should form the heart of the venue styling. “My team at The Village Florist, Lancing, helped bring our floral vision to life,” she tells us. “We had flowers pretty much everywhere but managed to repurpose many of the arrangements from the ceremony for the barn reception afterwards.” There was an impressive 1.6m statement floral chandelier hanging in the barn, and the top table was adorned in a 5ft-long arrangement. Large black urns framed the couple as they said their “I dos,” before being moved to a photo area in the barn. Meanwhile, Amanda at Hire Your Day provided support in the shape of blossom trees, chair sashes and ethereal white draping for the ceremony pergola. The wedding’s welcome sign and table plan were made by the bride. Each panel in the white door represented a table, which were all named after significant plants in the couple’s garden. With Leanne being a florist and Alex a landscape gardener, flowers and plants are understandably significant to both.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT The big-day bake and sweet-treat favours were made by The Painter’s Pantry. The couple opted for four tiers with fruit at the bottom, then chocolate, then coconut and lime, all topped with a layer of billionaires flavour. Cake-maker Sarah helped to include the couple’s fur children in the day, by hand-painting both cats on the back of the bake. Favours were plain shortbread biscuits personalised with Mr & Mrs Maynard. Sarah also hand-painted these, this time to complement the theme. Leanne and Alex also decided to bring a personal touch to their welcome cocktails. They chose passion fruit Martini to represent their ginger cat, Eddie, and named it The Ginger Pig. A further option was an espresso Martini in honour of their black and white cat Billy, called The Billy Bob. As you can imagine, these created quite the talking point. All assembled dined well on chicken Caesar salad to start, chicken and ham pie for main, and sticky toffee pudding to finish. Leanne says, “I can safely say, I’ve never been to a wedding where I’ve felt stuffed after the meal, but at my own I felt comfortably full, and many of our guests told me the same.” 33

“Have faith in your suppliers. It’s their job to make your day the best and they’ll work very hard to ensure that happens.” – Leanne
REAL WEDDING
LOOKING THE PART Leanne wore Raven by Maggie Sottero. “I always thought I wanted a big dress, but when I tried on the larger ballgown silhouettes, they really didn’t suit me. After trying on plenty of styles I discovered that A-line was the look for me,” Leanne shares. Pearls played a big part in the day as they’re the bride’s birthstone and also provided a nod to her late nan. Raven was embellished with small pearls along the straps and across the waistband, so this offered further proof, if it was needed, that this was the one. “However, me being me, I couldn’t just have an off-the-peg dress,” Leanne smiles. “So, we added an extra 18 inches to the train, and had more pearls sewn onto the waistband. It was perfect.” The couple actually stumbled across Alex’s groomswear in 2022, when looking for a suit for him to wear as groomsman for a friend’s wedding in Italy. Remembering the look when shopping for their own, they opted for the linen-effect light grey suits they’d seen with navy ties and white or navy pocket squares for his own groom’s party. Alex and the father-of-the-bride also wore waistcoats to set them apart. Leanne was originally looking for navy dresses for her bride tribe, but when she stumbled across some white and navy dresses online, she took the plunge and ordered them straight away. Shortly after, she was due to fly out to Dubai to see her best friend and ask her to be a bridesmaid, so she managed to take a couple with her to try. Success! She and the rest of the girls loved them and they fit beautifully.
TIME TO CELEBRATE Tobias Alexander from Lumimix entertained the couple and their loved ones from post-ceremony drinks through to midnight. “He’s an amazing singer, and a real entertainer,” Leanne tells us. “Our guests were all talking about him throughout the day, and still are!” The couple also booked magician, Jimmy Sheridan, who wowed everyone during the canapés and wedding breakfast. “He completely blew people away with his magic and they’re still talking about how incredible he was,” Leanne remembers.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS The newlyweds both agree that one of the highlights of the day for them was heading off to the other side of the lake for sunset photos. The venue provided golf buggies for the trip and they were joined by their photographer, as well as their videographer, and nephew. Once the photo session was complete, everyone bundled back into the buggies, except the happy couple who took a romantic stroll back to the venue alone. “We could see all of our guests across the lake and it was such an emotional moment having that time to ourselves, just to reminisce about how the day had gone so far. We both got choked up,” the bride recalls.

Lucy and Daniel incorporated heaps of personal touches into their big day to show guests how much they were appreciated
Images courtesy of Dominic Smith Photography “
T
hank goodness we swiped right!” says bride Lucy. She met Daniel on Tinder after her best friend insisted she sign up. It was actually she who swiped right for Dan as Lucy didn’t think he was her type on paper. The pair met up for their first date in Shoreham in 2017 and by the July had moved in together. “We were the perfect match. He’s calm, funny and thoughtful. I’m slightly less calm, but much funnier!” Lucy says. When the time came, Dan chose a special moment and place to pop the question. He’d booked a table for the two of them at The Grand Brighton. “It’s our place,” Lucy says. “Every Christmas we go there and have our photo taken by the tree. It holds such special memories for us.” Little did she know while posing for their picture this time, Dan had arranged to have it filmed as he got down on one knee. “I cried,” says Lucy. “A lot!” Southwater Church was Dan’s choice of ceremony venue as it has such a strong connection to his family. Meanwhile, Cottesmore Hotel Golf and Country Club seemed to be the perfect reception space as there was so much potential for the couple’s decorative vision. “We wanted somewhere our family and friends could stay too, so we could all have breakfast together the day after,” Lucy explains. The date was set for 13th May, 2023. Read on as the bride tells us all about it...

My mother-in-law and sister-in-law are big Say Yes To The Dress fans, so we went to Confetti and Lace in Lakeside a year before the wedding, and I found my dress there: Sadie by Sophia Tolli. As soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one. Although I did go back three times to check, as I kept having doubts!
My bouquet featured blue hydrangeas and white roses, which was mirrored for the bridesmaids who had white hydrangeas. Dan’s buttonhole also included a blue hydrange a, while the groomsmen wore white roses. Our youngest wore a beau tiful flower crown of white roses, and both mums had stunning wrist corsa ges with pearl straps.
We didn’t realise that one of the hymns we picked was a different version to the one we had printed in the order of service. There was an awkward but hilarious moment where the music kept going but our guests didn’t have the words to sing along. We didn’t think to check that out! 40
The shoes were an easy decision. I love Sex In The City and have always wanted Carrie shoes; you know, the ones Mr Big proposes to her with. So, I had the Manolo Blahnik Hagisi in blue as my wedding shoe.
I walked myself down the aisle. My parents walked down ahead of me with our two girls, but it felt important to me that no one was ‘giving’ me away. This was a decision made by me and for me. Walking in after all my loved ones to Dan at the end of the aisle was incredibly special.
The bridal car was a Rolls Royce Clou d, which was utterly beautiful. The bridesmaids travelled in a seven-seater Daimler.
REAL WEDDINGS
Dan wore a light blue suit, which contrasted with the darker blue Ted Baker suits the groomsmen wore.
My bridesmaids wore dresses in the same fabric and colour but in different styles. They all looked amazing. The little ones wore pretty white dresses with blue petals in the netting.
We used Rose Petal Cake Company to create bespoke shortbread biscuits bearing our initials. There were also his ‘n’ hers sweets for each guest. The children had personalised water cups and the wedding party were all gifted personalised champag ne flutes, which were handed to them at the drinks’ reception.
We used our guests’ nicknames rather than their actual names on the table plan! Hopefully it gave everyone a giggle. We named each of our tables after places that mean a great deal to us as a couple. The top table was home, our families were on Twyford (where I’m from), and Southwater (where Dan is from). We then had places we’d visited on holiday like Croatia and Thailand.

Cottesmore provided us with a selection of canapés for the drinks’ reception... not that I managed to eat any as we were off having photos! For our wedding breakfast, we dined on ham hock terrine, chicken stuffed with wild mushrooms and sticky toffee pudding to finish. The evening buffet was cheese platters, lamb koftas, pulled pork baps and, of course, wedding cake!
My top tips? Use an Excel sheet and get it set up early. Sit back and take it all in. And ladies, do a speech and take blotting sheets!
Our venue stylist, Sarah Shelley, was incredible from our first meeting where she bought me a coffee and sat down to listen to all our ideas, right through to the day itself. Nothing was too much trouble and she brought our dream to life.
We had a wonderful pianist playing in the courtyard as all the guests arrived for the drinks’ reception. We had given him a list of our wedding party’s first dances or meaning ful songs, which he learned and played for them. We also had a close-up magician who was brilliant. Our guests loved him, and everyone was stunned.
The Oliver Soul band sang 90s RnB, Moto wn and funk tunes, keeping ever yone enter tained throughout the even ing. We’d asked them to sing our first song and they totally smashed it. We also had a DJ.

aisey and Lee met on the school run – Lee was collecting his nephews while Daisey was picking up her kids. “Lee didn’t have any children of his own, whereas I have four who were aged four, five, six and seven at the time, but this never phased him. Little did I know that he would eventually join our family,” Daisey tells us. It was the last weekend of November, and by now a couple, Daisey and Lee decided to put their Christmas decorations up. Daisey was determined to get them all up with lights on before they went for a dog walk, but Lee was adamant they should all head to the beach for a stroll before it got too dark. The tide was out so there was plenty of sand for the kids and dog to play on, while Daisey followed behind enjoying the peace. That was until her inner calm was disturbed by someone shouting, “Mum, mum, look!” Her eldest, Ivy, was standing in the rock pool ahead holding something up in the air. As Daisey drew nearer she saw was it was a bottle. “I’d never found a bottle washed up on the beach before, so I was amazed that we’d come across one. Just like in the bedtime story I’d been reading to the kids!” Daisey shares. It wasn’t until she got halfway through the poem inside that she realised what it really was: a proposal. By the time she reached the last line, Lee was on one knee awaiting her answer. “The kids were so excited,” Daisey remembers. “And I was so happy that Lee had managed to pull it off in such a personal way, it couldn’t have been any more special. He’d chosen the spot where we went walking together when we were getting to know each other.” The venue hunt began and the couple were looking for something a little bit quirky, something different from the norm. Due to Covid restrictions at the time though, they could only pencil in a date to view The Bell in Ticehurst, which was a torturous four months away. Daisey explains: “We’d been informed that it had undergone an extensive makeover, but we only had a handful of new photos to go by. The Bell already had a great reputation and had won several awards for its food. So we were feeling really positive about our visit, and certainly weren’t disappointed.” They were so blown away by that first tour with the lovely wedding coordinator Tess, that they paid the deposit on the spot. Read on as Daisey tells us more about the big day – 6th August, 2022...
THAT PERSONAL TOUCH Daisey and Lee wanted to go with wedding favours injected with a bit of their personalities, so they turned to local Battle company, Mini Mouthfuls, the bride’s ultimate go-to for fudge treats! They’d invited 60 day guests, so they selected six different fudge flavours, and sealed the bags with a personalised sticker. The couple found that the centrepieces were one of the most difficult parts of their planning journey. “There were so many ways to decorate, but we really didn’t want to lose the true character and décor of the function room with its beautifully painted wallpaper,” Daisey says of the challenge they encountered. Ultimately, they decided to keep things simple and bought chunky whitewashed candlesticks, in which they placed white candles. These were then dressed perfectly by wedding florist Andrea, with greenery and textures to achieve the desired look. On the subject of flowers, florist Andrea wildly impressed the couple with the arrangements she put together for the big day. Daisey sent through a list of colours and a few photos depicting her vision, and left her to create something unique. Andrea didn’t disappoint having gone above and beyond. “I remember when she delivered our bouquets, I was so over the moon, they were everything I’d asked for and more. In fact, Andrea dressed the whole venue beautifully,” the bride tells us. “We were surprised, or somewhat naïve, when it came to the cost of wedding flowers, as we hadn’t done much research in the beginning. Consequently, we ended up spending more on them than we’d ever imagined,” Daisey continues. “But it was 100 per cent necessary, and we wouldn’t have done it any other way!” The venue oozes with such an amazing charm that neither felt the need to worry about dressing it too much more. They loved it the way it was, so they just went ahead and did things their way, in a chic minimalist fashion.
LOVE AND CARRIAGE Daisey wanted to get ready at her parents’ house on the morning of the wedding, which meant she had the opportunity to travel to The Bell in style. She and her dad conspired to track down Daisey’s mum’s dream wedding car for the journey as a surprise, since hers had been cancelled last minute on her own big day. They trawled the internet and were delighted to find the vintage black Daimler they’d been looking for at Chariots Chauffeurs. It was a seven-seater so it could carry the whole bridal party, including the all-important passenger-of-honour, Daisey’s mum. “It’s safe to say 46
that mum really liked the surprise,” Daisey says.
REAL WEDDING
FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD Newlyweds and guests dined on an incredible menu prepared by The Bell’s team, known for their brilliant food. Daisey and Lee had been lucky enough to sample a preview at their tasting evening, and felt confident that everyone was in for a real treat. “I wasn’t too concerned about what we’d choose for our wedding breakfast, but Lee is more of a food connoisseur and wanted it to be special, and somewhat fancy!” Daisey tells us. Despite feeling bewildered by the choice of designs and styles possible when she met wedding cake maker Charlie, Daisey knew she was in safe hands. “Charlie created a beautifully elegant cake that didn’t just look amazing, but tasted great too,” she says.
“Our photographer Darren made us feel so relaxed even though we hate having our photos taken! He and his wife Jade slotted in effortlessly and have captured so many memories that we’ll cherish forever.” – Daisey GRAND DESIGNS As a bride-to-be, Daisey started her wedding dress shopping looking at gowns around the top end of her budget, but left the first boutique feeling deflated at not finding her dream dress. “They were all so beautiful, but I just couldn’t shake the fact that they were all so expensive,” she says. So, Covid masks at the ready, they tried another boutique with the aim of trying on several different styles. Due to the restrictions in place she could only pick out five; luckily though, Daisey says, “This worked in my favour as I found the one! It was the one style I wasn’t keen on trying. It was fitted, which I assumed wouldn’t do me any favours, but I absolutely loved it, and all for under £500 including any alternations needed nearer the time.” Lee decided early on that he didn’t want to wear anything that he’d feel uncomfortable in. The search wasn’t an easy one we’re told, but eventually he opted for chinos and a shirt, waistcoat and jacket. He used local independent menswear store, Dickies Menswear, where he bought the gents’ jackets and waistcoats in a gorgeous sage green tweed. The only hitch was that this range had no junior version for Daisey’s 10-year-old son, but ebay came to the rescue with a well nigh perfect match. The groom chose chinos in a slightly different hue to the rest of his party to help him stand out, and voila, all were suited, booted and good to go. Maid-of-honour, Daisey’s sister, was the only adult in the bridal party, and looked stunning in a beautiful soft champagne colour, which complemented the blush under layer of the bride’s dress. The remainder of the bride tribe were Daisey’s lovely girls, who wore dresses from JJ’s House following a previous drama with a supplier in the U.S.
CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES A live band that came highly recommended by The Bell entertained everyone in the evening. They played a live version of the couple’s first dance song, Amazed by Lonestar and introduced the bride’s surprise twist on a father/daughter dance, Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. The couple had also hired a photo booth, which allowed guests to take a memento of the day home with them. The newlyweds also got a USB with all of the images of the night on it.
THE BIG REVEAL “I was just so relieved at how well my speech went down,” Lee says. “I’d been jotting down paragraphs here and there since I proposed and had read the words a thousand times over, but I couldn’t gage what everyone else’s reaction would be. It was here that I was able to tell everyone that my wife was in fact a liar... She’d been giving various excuses for not drinking alcohol for many weeks, when the truth was, she was actually pregnant! We’d only told our immediate family the news the day before, so it was lovely to share it with everyone on our wedding day.” Daisey says, “I’d actually recommend avoiding alcohol on your wedding day if you can. I could only have a few sips, but not being able to drink was great for me as I’m able to remember every last detail about my day!” 47

Alice from entertainment booking service Entertainment Nation says, “How you want your day to feel is a really important factor when nailing your wedding entertainment. If you have visions of a serene atmosphere with elegant musical backdrops, then a string quartet, singing guitarist or instrumentalist would be ideal to keep the drinks and chatter flowing. However, if something quiet and understated just isn’t your vibe and you’d prefer everyone to be dancing and singing while non-stop partying leads to sore feet in the morning, an awesome pop, indie or rock band is a nobrainer. Alternatively, perhaps a funky soul and disco band would go down a treat with you soul music lovers. “Want to make a statement at your wedding and make sure it’s unforgettable? Alternative entertainment like singing waiters and DJ live bands, who are known for involving the crowd, are stand-out options for a memorable wedding celebration that’s personal to you. For top advice, recommendations and a really friendly expert team, contact
to join you in the crowd as you party with your nearest and dearest. The live horn section made up of saxophones, trumpets and trombones brings the music to life along with rhythm and percussion. “Looking for that extra special moment? We will learn and perform your first dance song live for that unforgettable memory,” Olly says. The Brighton Party Band also offers full production and staging for any venue. The room can be transformed into anything you want and the band always performs with its own technicians. From 50 to 500 guests or more, the latest production and audio equipment ensures a stunning show every single time! MTA EVENTS www.mta-events.com “‘Where words fail, music speaks.’ This quote is so true when it comes to the music at your wedding ceremony,” says MTA Events’ Phil Morton. “The music played as you walk down the aisle channels all the emotion in the room from the guests and the two of you.” Phil has performed at hundreds of wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships during the course of the past 15 years. The first note from his piano as guests stand up for the start of the ceremony sets the tone for the rest of the day, such as traditional wedding piece Canon in D. Having music played live on a beautiful white grand piano, which MTA Events supplies, adds a touch of elegance to your day. Phil also specialises in taking a couple’s favourite piece of music and turning it into something that the bridal party can walk down the aisle to. If you’ve ever seen Phil do this at a wedding fair, the tears of emotion from the couple and their family when they hear their song transformed in this way speaks volumes. He finds that they book immediately after this too! MTA Events is currently taking bookings well into 2026, so don’t delay. Relaxed vibes 52

FIONA HOSFORD www.harpist.uk.com “I adore my job,” says harpist Fiona Hosford. “Having played at weddings for more than 20 years now, I can honestly say that although the harp is a classical instrument, it’s not only classical music that can be played on it.” Fiona has collated in excess of 4,500 pieces of music throughout her professional career, and also receives a huge amount of requests at weddings, so nothing phases her. In fact she finds it a real honour to be asked to transpose a favourite piece onto the harp. Genres that transpose well onto the harp to give them a more relaxed, fun and modern feel include film, video game and rock music. One of Fiona’s favourite playlists is 80s/90s, which always brings a fun vibe to any wedding and goes down really well. As a client of Fiona’s you’ll be invited to a Zoom meeting with her before your big day, which means that she can get to know you and begin a personal connection. This is very important as it can give her an idea of what other musical items you might like. Some of the more interesting pieces she’s been able to play for her couples are: Star Wars, Monty Python’s Always Look On The Bright Side of Life, Pokemon and Jurassic Park.

ENTERTAINMENT
Relaxed vibes Johnny B Memphis offers his services at for all stages of the wedding day from ceremony and wedding breakfast, to evening reception.
JOHNNY B MEMPHIS www.johnnybmemphis.com If you’re a fan of the King of Rock’n’roll, Johnny B Memphis’ performance will be one you’ll remember for years to come! His aim is to get everyone up by the end of the night, singing and dancing along to Elvis’ classics such as Suspicious Minds and The Wonder Of You, as well as everyone’s favourite Neil Diamond song Sweet Caroline. Johnny says, “I strive to offer a near-accurate vocal performance with the dance moves Elvis was so well known for while dressed in his 1970s-period stage costume. I’ve studied Elvis for years and have put in a lot of work to make my performance as authentic as possible.” While the music of Elvis Presley might not be everyone’s cup of tea, Johnny has been told on numerous occasions by wedding guests that although they’re not really fans, they really enjoyed the performance. Some even state that they couldn’t believe how many songs they knew, and that they’d definitely go and see him again. Others have hailed him as the best tribute they’ve ever seen; “Which is a really lovely complement to be given,” says Johnny. He continues, “Elvis’ music is for all ages and that’s why it’s perfect for weddings. It’s great fun for me and everyone, young and old, has a great time too!”

HARPIST IONA https://harpistiona.wixsite.com/harpistiona Iona Duncan has been mastering the harp for more than 20 years, performing solo concertos and touring orchestral works internationally. As a youngster, she was an upcoming talent, playing on the BBC Proms aged just 16 and was leader of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. In 2021, Iona graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance with a first-class honours and since then has become a regular booking for weddings and functions. With a repertoire spanning all genres from Mozart to Metallica, she prides herself in first-class service in both performance and customer service. When you enquire you’ll be greeted with a welcome pack and repertoire list. From here, you’ll be able to decide how you’d like to tailor your booking to suit your vision. While some opt for ceremony only, others love the idea of the sounds of a harp for their welcome drinks or dinner. Iona even allows her clients to determine the colour of her gown! You’ll also be sent videos of the music prior to the wedding and are also welcome to have a 30-minute Zoom session to finalise ideas and hear the music live.

ASK THE EXPERTS
The county’s experts offer stellar advice on personalising your nuptials
WITH THIS RING
Andrew Leggett from Aurum Designer Jewellers (www.aurumjewellers.com) says: Whereas most aspects of your wedding are just for the big day, your wedding ring is something you’ll be wearing every day for the rest of your life. It’s important to go for a ring that’s perfect for you. Consider going for a bespoke, handmade design, rather than an offthe-shelf, factory-made product. Being involved in the design process opens up a world of possibilities. You’ll have control over every aspect and when everything comes together the result is a ring that’s perfect for you.
If you have an engagement ring, your wedding band should be designed so that the two complement one another. You might find that your engagement ring needs a fitted band to sit comfortably alongside it. Many couples like the idea of having matching rings, but individual tastes vary and it usually ends up that each partner prefers a ring that suits them. So, while they won’t be identical, it is nice if they can have something in common. That could be as simple as the material or perhaps something more complex like a design feature. If you have a design-consultation with a goldsmith, you’ll be able to bear this in mind as you discuss the specifications of your ideal rings.

THE STORY OF US
Vicky Edwards from Spot On Ceremonies (https://spotonceremonies.co.uk) says: Given that a wedding day pivots on ‘the story of us’, not telling it would be a crying shame. And while your guests will each know snippets, most won’t know the complete story, so this is a really lovely opportunity to share it. The love story is usually the centrepiece of a celebrant-led wedding, so the first thing to do is find the celebrant that you feel a connection with. Then, in as much detail as you can (and that you’re prepared to share with everyone), tell them your story. Tell it in all its romantic, funny, silly and heart-warming glory, including how, where and when the proposal happened. Equipped with all the ingredients, your celebrant will then weave together something beautiful, meaningful and memorable; something that’s bespoke, super-personal and absolutely you as a couple. Because a good celebrant is a great storyteller, on the big day you can be sure they’ll tell your tale in a way that inspires laughter, fuzzy feelings and happy tears. Or in other words: how you started at once upon a time and arrived at happily ever after.
57
SAY “CHEESE!”
Your Sussex Wedding editor Kelly Andrews says: Using photos throughout your day is a wonderful way to tell your story and personalise your celebrations. There are so many cool and quirky ways you can incorporate them too, for example, did you know you could have a photo printed onto the lining of the groom’s and fathers’ ties? A memory wall is popular with many couples. Utilise a beautiful backdrop or wooden pallet for more rustic vibes to create a timeline of your relationship through snaps; or if you share a mutual love of travelling, what about a world map with pics of the two of you captured in that location pinned to it? Instead of a guestbook, it’s a great idea to get a large mounted print of your favourite engagement shoot image and have guests sign that. This way it can later be framed and hung in your home as a reminder of your best day ever! A lovely trend we’re seeing at the moment is couples incorporating photos in their table names. Pick a meaningful date, name your table after it and label the table with a relevant piccy of the two of you. Alternatively, I love the idea of choosing several ages and including baby and childhood photos of each of the two of you. Super-cute! 58

YOU DO YOU
Roxy, a humanist wedding celebrant from Roxy Celebrates Love (www.roxycelebrateslove.com), says: With a celebrant wedding, your ceremony is guaranteed to be completely personalised to reflect you as a couple. Unlike a formulaic registrar service by someone you meet minutes before walking down the aisle, your celebrant will spend time getting to know you both so that your ceremony will tell your love story. With the boring formal elements such as the legalities removed, there’s so much space to truly celebrate you, both as a couple and as individuals. More often than not, the ceremony is seen as the boring, official bit before the fun actually begins. If you want a ceremony brimming with joy, love, tears and personality, and something all of your guests will be talking about afterwards (for all the right reasons), a celebrant ceremony could be the option for you. The feedback I often get is that the ceremony was one of the best parts of the day and unlike anything guests had seen before. It’s a chance to bring people into your lives and tell your story in a truly unique way that sets the tone for the party that follows.
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
Penny Evison from Hellbore & Rose Floral Design (www.helleboreandrose.co.uk) says: For hundreds of years, flowers have been beautifully sourced to send and portray unspoken messages of the heart. Designed by nature, their secret language attracts us to their fleeting delicacy and fragrant aroma. Taking time to capture the floral details is how we flourish when it comes to bringing your love story to life. So, we take our time, breathe in and build together a natural portfolio of flowers that reflects your love, romance and personalities, to ensure that when your wedding day arrives, the floral beauty is how you envision it to be. We love to blend nature’s beautiful combinations of flora and foliage, structure and scent. Whether in soft tones, vibrant colour or a fusion of both, every creative design is thoughtfully considered to reflect your personalities. Enhancing and entwining everything that’s unique to your relationship matters when creating the floral designs for the day you’re imagining.

wonderful wedding day WISHING HUE A
As we pass through the seasons of this year and next, colour schemes can vary and adapt with trends. Here editorial assistant Jess Bayley has created a guide to inspire you for your own big day
F
rom delicate tones in spring to crisp shades in winter, colour schemes are vital to curating your dream wedding. Not only is a colour palette important when deciding what atmosphere you wish to create, but it will also ensure the theme is timeless when you look back through photographs post-vows. Choosing a scheme of two to four main colours depending on your chosen theme creates gateways for inspiration and aesthetics across various on-the-day styling elements.
SPRING WEDDINGS As flowers begin to bloom you’ll see colour schemes reflected in nature, with frequent hues of peach, lilac, sage and azure. This season of new life and fresh starts will manifest and relate to a couple’s new chapter in life ‒ their wedding. The balance of sunshine and cloud coverage will be sure to make the soft, yet striking tones of your styling choices pop in photos. For a rustic spring wedding, soft pinks and blues incorporating subtle floral elements will delicately complement any wedding. Blush pink bridesmaid dresses are a traditional choice, allowing your wedding to embrace full elegance, while you can implement large amounts of light blue through the suits and table runners, for a contrasting air of fantasy. A spring garden approach develops a seasonal and romantic atmosphere, with the use of pastel shades and plenty of flowers. This scheme is versatile and could be adapted to suit almost any venue, although a botanical venue whether that be a woodland, historical site or vineyard will really make this theme shine. When it comes to stationery, gentle pastel tones of blues, pinks or sage with the use of floral designs and foliage are recommended think: fresh, floral and fun!
SUMMER WEDDINGS Summertime can be ideal for outdoor weddings and the collaboration of natural and artificial colours can be mixed to find your ideal combination. With vibrant summer themes such as tropical, carnival and retro surf, it‘s no surprise that vivid yellows, oranges and greens are popular. While these schemes can be quite bold and lively, they can also be warm and relaxed, the options are boundless! Hues can be selected to match the intended atmosphere of a wedding, whilst using opposing tones of the colour wheel to form pops of colour in photos. A light blue and coral scheme can set a vibe of playfulness, why not opt for light blue bridesmaid dresses, ties, stationery and tablecloths, offset with a dreamy bouquet of coral and cream? You can employ small details of coral throughout the wedding styling using the larger statement pieces to show off the blue hue. For the theme of ‘retro surf’, implement an arrangement of bold yellows and pinks for an energetic and zesty look. Often these citrus-inspired hues complement natural accents such as wood or leather allowing couples the freedom to experiment with different textures too for a true outdoor-wedding-vibe! 60
COLOUR PALETTES
AUTUMN WEDDINGS The charm of an autumn wedding is irresistible; the leaves changing colour and foliage increasing, it can also be a season for an outside wedding, with picturesque and colourful views for photos – be sure to wrap up warm though! When opting for a big day at this time of year, a ‘golden glow’ colour scheme can be combined with warmer tones of terracotta, saffron and maple ‒ watch a mature and earthy feel transpire. For that much-needed colour pop, mustard is an on-trend hue to brighten the look. This colour scheme also works well with a more bohemian approach using natural material, think: linens, rattan, macramé and hessian. Metallic tones such as bronze or copper offer a sophisticated spin on an autumn wedding. Perhaps a coppereffect seating arrangement and table decorations ‒beautifully compatible with green foliage! By displaying your wedding cake on a copper cake stand, the scheme will follow into a focal point of your wedding, you can even implement your colour palette into the cake decoration itself with edible gold leaf detailing.
WINTER WEDDINGS
As temperatures begin to decrease, colour schemes can begin to cool with forest green, icy white, frosted blue and glistening silver being go-to winter wedding hues. But these colours can go hand in hand with some warmer earthy tones such as red, berry and brown ‒ rich in life and sumptuous additions. Green and berry tones are a classic and timeless combination creating a festive atmosphere which can incorporated into any venue ‒ some may already have their Christmas decorations up you can utilise! Bring the outside-in with plenty of natural garlands such as ivy, fern and holly displayed around the venue. When it comes to choosing a style for the wedding cake, opt for a simplistic design with the focus on nature-inspired decoration such as pinecones, velvet ribbons and holly to reinstate the theme. Along with the cake, a bouquet can also be kept simple with the use of white flowers, green leaves and red berries, often the addition of red among white flowers creates a pop of colour and adds some much-needed warmth for the time of year. An aqua and silver scheme considers the cool tones of winter, forming a regal and icy atmosphere for the wedding. This sophisticated palette can be emphasised through greys and blues in décor as well within the groom’s and groomsmens’ suits. For a bride, a pair of diamond white or aquamarine blue earrings can add subtle hints of the theme complementing a white dress. When it comes to decorating a venue, fairy lights can add warmth to the frozen aura of a winter wedding, making you feel as though you are under the stars, a magical way to end celebrations as the evening draws in. 61

SKINCARE ADVICE
Skin
DEEP WarPaint For Men shares its make-up and skincare tips for grooms-to-be
O
ur grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with the founder of WarPaint For Men, Danny Gray, to discuss his skincare advice for grooms-to-be. Base prep – As great make-up starts with healthy skin, preparation is key to ensuring any products you apply, like tinted moisturiser or concealer, sit well and last all day. Start by using a hydrating cleanser with warm water to wash your face. Follow this up with a hydrating moisturiser and a primer to create a great base for your make-up. It’s a good idea to leave the primer for a minute or so before applying any products. SPF always – It’s important to wear SPF every single day to protect your skin from sun damage. Don’t worry; sun cream designed for your face isn’t the same greasy stuff you’d use for your body. It's often lighter and non-greasy, helping to create a good base for make-up. Foundation vs tinted moisturiser – Sometimes, foundation can feel a bit too much in the warmer months, so instead, you can opt for a tinted moisturiser. These offer light coverage for your complexion while keeping your skin moisturised. Cool eyes – Using an eye cream is a great way to combat dark undereyes and crow’s feet. A hack to really wake up and refresh tired eyes is to keep your eye cream in the fridge. Anything cooling will help depuff your eyes and
help you feel fresher on a hot day. Even complexion – To make sure your make-up looks even and natural, use a brush or sponge for application. When applying foundation or tinted moisturiser, blend it all over your face, up to your hairline, and down your neck. Take extra care to blend in areas that crease, which might get warmer during the summer, such as around the nose and under the eyes. Get bronzed – Do you want that just-backfrom-holiday look without reaching for the fake tan? Try using a bronzer to lightly contour the face and add extra warmth to your skin. Lightly sweep the bronzer across the top of your forehead and cheekbones using a powder brush, and gently buff out any harsh lines using the brush. Facial hair focus – Are your beard or brows looking a little patchy, or lighter after time in the sun? Keep your facial hair looking fuller and thicker with a make-up pencil. Keep the pencil sharp, and you’ll be able to draw hair-like strokes to fill any patches or lighter areas. Try using a small comb to blend and shape the hair. Don’t sweat it – If you’re worried about looking sweaty or oily, using a light, translucent powder on the face can help take away shine. Gently sweep the powder in circular motions over any areas of your face that can look shiny, usually the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

BEAUTY ADVICE
Q&A Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals
AUTUMN VIBES I’m struggling for ideas on how to wear my hair for my autumnal themed wedding. What would you suggest? Chloë Campbell from Chloë Campbell Hair and Makeup (www.chloecampbellmua.com) says: If you’re set to have your wedding during the autumn and wish to incorporate your wedding vibes into your hair, short of dying it a warm reddish brown, a great way to achieve the look is through your hair accessories. Autumn is full of warm earthy tones that look fantastic paired with any hair colour. Cool autumn breezes give you the opportunity to wear your hair down without the risk of over heating. Swap out beachy summer tousled locks for a more sleek, polished wave. If you want a further nod to the boho feel, which is forever a popular wedding style, then incorporate flowers into your hairstyle. Fresh or silk, this is a fantastic way to highlight the wonderful tones emblematic of autumn. If an Indian summer is in the forecast and you have the potential for a very warm wedding day, then an up-do is always a safe and elegant option. A low textured bun is a wonderful way of making hair appear more voluminous and is more forgiving on a long wedding day than a sleek undo. Whichever style you opt for, the key to highlighting your autumnal theme is through the incorporation of warm, rich textures and tones throughout the hair and accessories.
PICTURE-PERFECT BROWS How can I make sure my eye brows look picture-perfect on my wedding day?
Getty Images
Claire Reed from The Beauty Ninjas (www.thebeautyninjas.co.uk) says: It’s advisable to have regular brow appointments with a reputable salon from at least six months before your big day. Your technician will be able to advise you on suitable treatments such as shaping, tinting and lamination. This will help to get your natural brows into the best possible shape. It’s best to avoid trying a new treatment or salon very close to the big day though. Excessively dark or over-plucked brows the week before your wedding won’t be a good look! If you do decide to tackle your own shaping, do it perfectly by familiarising yourself with the ratios of the face and use a flesh toned eye pencil to mark out your brows before you commit to the tweeze. On the big day itself, brows can be slicked into place with a clear gel such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze, and topped up with hair strokes using the NYX Micro Brow Pencil.

ORANGE YOU GLAD YOU TRIED IT?
I won’t lie, when Huda Beauty’s new #FauxFilter Colour Correctors Correct & Brighten turned up in the office, their orangey hues made me think the brand’s boffins had lost the plot! How wrong was I? These little wonders harness the power of colour theory by using opposing colours to neutralise unwanted discolouration. The peachy tones cancel out darkness and pigmentation to create even skin, which explains why this is the best product I’ve ever used for concealing my dark under-eye circles. Never again will I question Huda Beauty! £26, https://hudabeauty.com
WOODEN HEART
Luxury British skincare brand Ashmira Botanica is formulated with high quality natural ingredients packed with natural plant extracts, essential oils, and clays, is completely vegan, and formulated in small batches to minimise its ecological footprint. Inspired by Chinese medicine, the core concept is derived from the ancient philosophy of the five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The holistic, natural treatments can be personalised based on your biorhythm (year of birth), current skincare issues, and/or emotions, as well as being tuned to the season and time of year. I recently met the brand’s founder Tracey at a wedding show and discovered that my element is wood, she then proceeded to describe me to a tee based on this, which was eerily fascinating! Head over to the website, https://ashmirabotanica.com, to discover your own element and check out the box sets. The Ashmira Botanica Wood Gift Set, £45, includes a 25g pot of Elemental Clay Powder, 5ml Elemental Elixir, 15ml Rice Balm Face Cream and 100ml Organic Rose Hydrosol.

Best face forward Beauty editor Kelly Andrews investigates the much-discussed bridal must-have treatment, HydraFacial
A
s beauty editor here at County Wedding Magazines I get to talk to a lot of bridal make-up artists and skincare specialists, and have heard them recommend a course of HydraFacials on many an occasion. It’s suitable for all skin types and addresses all skincare needs, so this apparently is the best way forward to glowing big-day skin. I needed to investigate for myself so, I headed to my local HydraFacial provider, The Melrose Clinic in Leigh-on-Sea, quick smart. I was lucky enough to have the chance to give the gold level HydraFacial a whirl, and my treatment begun with a cleanse before my therapist, Cornelia, went in with a lymphatic drainage massage. This stage is designed to assist your body’s natural ability to recycle, by opening up its lymphatic system. It helps to get rid of toxins built up in the skin, as well as reducing puffiness. The first step of the HydraFacial proper is an exfoliation, offering the skin a second, deeper cleanse. The system uses vortex technology, a vacuum to the uninitiated, via the device’s wand, which is where the magic happens. HydraFacial works with several highly-regarded professional brands including JLO Beauty, Murad, ZO Skin Health and Circadia to produce signature products especially for this treatment and its associated technology. The liquid is released into the tip of the wand, which is then passed over the face. Meanwhile, the technology delivers deeper product penetration and longer-lasting results than a traditional facial ever could. The first solution, Active Pore, contains algae extract, lacid acid and glucosamine. Nothing too harsh, and it works to give the skin a deep exfoliation. Next is a light GlySal peel, so called as it contains both glycolic and salicylic acids. When you book the recommended course of
86
HydraFacials, your therapist will gradually move you through the strengths – 7.5 per cent, 15 per cent, and 30 per cent. It’s important not to shock the skin, so they’ll check all the way to make sure it’s happy and reacting well before moving to the more intense versions. The peel opens up the pores and exfoliates even more deeply than the previous exfoliation step. You’ll also find it has a brightening effect and helps with breakouts, no doubt music to your ears as you prepare for your big day. Moving on to the extraction part of the process, the vacuum technology comes into its own removing black heads from the nose, and is much kinder to the skin than squeezing them out. Although I didn’t have any blackheads, I do struggle with an oily T-zone, so this was one of the most satisfying sections for me. Be gone dirt and debris! The chemical peel is then neutralised before moving on to the booster, exclusive to the gold level. During my consultation at the beginning of the treatment, we’d discovered that my skin was particularly dehydrated. The sudden temperature change hadn’t been doing it any favours and what I thought were just dry skin patches, turned out to be eczema. So, my therapist selected Hydraglucan by Nassif MD. As well as a healthy helping of hyaluronic acid it also contains glucosamine, which aids collagen production and softens skin tissue. My skin was so parched, it soaked the product up in double quick time, literally lapping up every drop of goodness from the booster. I was next put under red LED and infrared lights to bring any redness down and ensure the serum fully penetrated the skin. These also heal, which was great news for my eczema patches. There’s also a blue light option, which is likely the one your therapist will opt for if you suffer from breakouts as it’s antibacterial. I relaxed beneath the glow for 15 minutes, while I tried not to doze off, so relaxed was I by this point. Finally, came the skin infusion, the part that makes the complexion really glow. It contains hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, arnica to calm, and mineral skin conditioners – copper, magnesium and zinc. If you ask your therapist at the end, they’ll show you the gunky jar! This is where all of the extractions from your skin end up. To be fair, mine could have been worse. But knowing the content of that jar was once stored in the pores of my face and now isn’t, was super-satisfying. No lie, I’ve been talking about this treatment since I left the clinic. I entered with utterly miserable skin and over the next few days it began to feel clearer, lighter and crucially was responding to the skin care I was applying. I’m happy to report that I’m so pleased with the result, I no longer feel self-conscious when I dare to go out make-up free. I can only imagine the results following a full course. For brides-to-be a course of six HydraFacials six months before the big day is recommended. This allows time for the chemical peel intensity to be increased gradually and have optimum effect. It’s advised that your final treatment be left no later than a week prior to the wedding just in case of any adverse reactions. The most popular option amongst nearlyweds is the silver HydraFacial, priced at £140 the cost comes down when you book a course, and includes everything I’ve talked about above, minus the booster serum. Contact your local HydraFacial provider to learn more. You can find your nearest at https://hydrafacial.co.uk

Lady of the dance Beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews, talks to Strictly’s Luba Mushtuk about health, wellbeing and the all-important first dance
L
uba Mushtuk has been a pro dancer on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing since 2016. On a break between tours, she took some time out to chat to our beauty and wellness editor, Kelly Andrews. Here, she shares her top health and wellbeing tips for soon-to-be weds, as well as giving us the lowdown on how she keeps fit and healthy when she’s not performing on the show or touring.
We understand you’re a fan of getting outdoors to exercise. Where do you most love to go? I love the outdoors especially on those rare sunny days. I’m a big sun lover! One of my favourite spots in London where I go for a run and exercise outdoors is Hampstead Heath; it’s so big and full of nature, with a great view over the city. I love being out in the fresh air.
How did you discover your passion for dance and decide to make it a career? It all started when I fell in love with a skirt that my mum made for me when I was around three years old. I was a very naughty child, but once I had music and a skirt I was just off dancing by myself, rather than making a mess around the house! That was why my mum was so keen for me to keep dancing, it kept me out of trouble! From the age of four, I started competing. My oldest brother was already a dancer by that time and gave me a lot of lessons at home, so even at four I was very advanced compared to my peers. I guess the universe made a decision for me, I never even questioned my career path, as I’d already been doing it my whole life. I can’t even imagine doing anything else.
What does a typical day look like for you? How does your fitness and wellness regime fit in? If you want to fit it in, you will. It’s all about prioritising fitness and wellness that makes you feel good. I think you’re more likely to stick to a schedule if you work out in the morning, then there’s less chance of something coming up in the day that can cause exercise to fall down the list of priorities. Doing it first thing means you can’t push it back. There’s also something to be said for putting yourself first – do something for you first thing. My typical day starts with an early morning workout, I find it sets the
What is the proudest moment of your career so far? I’m proud of how I’m able to communicate my passion and love for dance with millions of people and hopefully make them feel every single emotion I’m expressing through my art. Being on TV is so amazing, as you can bring joy to so many people, and hopefully inspire them too. How did you get involved with Strictly? I started as an assistant choreographer in 2016, which I did for two years and absolutely loved working behind the scenes. I always dreamed of being a professional dancer on the show though, so I’m grateful it happened that way. What style would you suggest a couple learn for their first dance as beginners, even for those of us with two left feet! The first dance is such a special moment and should be magical. I’ve choreographed a good few for for my friends, I love doing them, but it all depends on music choice. Once, I did a wedding dance mix of eight songs complete with a change of a dress. It’s about the couple, music choice and what they really want. A waltz or American smooth are both good choices for a classic first dance but if you want something a bit different, more fun, just go for it! Tell us about your own healthy living regime. How do you stay fit and healthy in between series and tours? It’s so important to stay healthy while on tour, as our schedule is so busy. But I also keep fit and healthy between tours and building up to Strictly Come Dancing. It’s actually very simple for me – I eat very clean and exercise daily, whether that’s pilates, a run, boxing, or dance. I also think sleep is such an important part of staying healthy. I certainly love my beauty sleep – I never get less than seven hours and always try to listen to my body. 88
WELLBEING INTERVIEW
tone for the rest of the day. I finish the workout feeling strong, energetic and proud that I started the day with something positive. I obviously love dancing, but I’ve been really enjoying pilates recently too. Following that, I’ll eat breakfast, have some coffee, check my diary to make sure I don’t miss any commitments, then let the day begin.
What are your top tips for a couple looking to get in shape for their wedding, and how can they maintain it once it’s back to reality with a bump? It’s a common goal for couples to get into shape for their big day. It might be obvious, but my advice would be to focus on both nutrition and daily movement. Eating a balanced diet that includes wholefoods and avoiding highly processed, sugary foods can make a huge difference to how you feel. It’s also very important to keep hydrated and get enough sleep. I believe to look good you must feel good. In terms of movement, finding an exercise routine that works for both partners can be helpful. You could schedule some joint sessions and some separately. For example, if you’re learning some fresh moves for your first dance you could take a dance class together (and learning that will get you into shape let me tell you!). Then, perhaps a running session apart, if that makes sense for your schedule. It’s also nice to have some ‘me’ time. For maintaining after the wedding, I think it’s important to remember how good the new routine made you feel. But most of all, remember to love your body whatever shape you are. Beauty comes from the confidence within, so make sure if you’re looking to get into shape, you’re doing it to be stronger and healthier. Getting in shape is not always easy, but it can be a rewarding experience. If you could tell people about one simple, initial change we could all make to our lives to start us out on the path to a healthier lifestyle, body and mind, what would it be? Personally, I’ve found our minds and bodies are completely interconnected, and if you love yourself, you’ll fuel your body and mind with good nutrition, movement and affirmations. So, I think making a commitment to self-care and self-love is the initial step needed to make positive lifestyle changes. Then to look after your physical self, perhaps start with smaller changes that are achievable. If you’re early in your journey, you could start to get to know your body better by doing 10 minutes of stretching every morning, or if you’re slightly further along, start a new fitness class. Whatever changes you choose to make, the key is to stay committed and consistent. Remember to be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way. You’re an incredibly busy lady, how do you maintain a healthy mind amidst the pressures of a hectic schedule? Maintaining a healthy mindset throughout a hectic schedule is just
All images courtesy of www.instagram.com/lubamushtuk
What keeps you motivated? I find motivation within myself. I’m constantly looking to improve and become better than I was yesterday. I think that this attitude is part of being a professional dancer, you have to want to keep pushing to be better. I’m driven to grow and evolve as a person too. I love learning and experiencing new things. I think it’s important to broaden your knowledge and change as you gain experience, which is why I try to always say “yes” to new opportunities, even if they seem scary or risky at the time. I also find motivation in the people around me. Whether it’s family, friends, or people I work with. I’m constantly inspired by them and their achievements.
something that comes with experience, it’s definitely become easier over time! I’ve learned what I need to prioritise in order to make sure I can remain consistent. This means exercising in the morning, spending time meditating, and keeping an organised diary. Now I’m able to just get things done without thinking about it, but that’s only because I’ve managed to put in the time and hard work to figure it all out. Be patient with yourself and stay committed, and you’ll get there, wherever it is you want to go. Is there anything you can suggest to calm the stress levels during wedding planning? Try to remember that it’s a blessing to have met the love of your life, that both committing to each other for a lifetime is a beautiful thing and the rest is just details. I’m a very organised person and I love to plan things, but I can imagine that planning something as big as a wedding would be super stressful. If you’re lucky enough to have friends or family members who want to support you with the planning, maybe take them up on it! Or if you can afford it, seek support from a professional wedding planner. It’s also important to remember that your wedding day is about you and your partner, and not about pleasing everyone else. I’ve heard a lot of my friends who’ve got married say that it’s impossible to please everyone. So, I suppose you can remove some of that stress by prioritising what you want and what makes you both happy, whether that means having a big wedding or eloping. Don’t feel pressured to conform to society’s expectations or what others want from or for you. What’s next for you? My goal is to continue growing, continuing to improve my craft, and grab on to any opportunities that inspire and challenge me! I love life so I’m just going to keep on living and hopefully I’ll have many more wonderful opportunities to inspire others. You can follow Luba on Instagram at www.instagram.com/lubamushtuk, and catch her on Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1 this autumn. 89

Olivia Gibson discovers the delights of Provence at Hôtel Crillon le Brave
BREAKFAST IS SERVED While strolling through the labyrinth of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, hand-in-hand, we had to take a step back to bask in the gentle breeze, chirping birds and the occasional church bells. Together it created the ideal atmosphere to relax while enjoying a delicious Provençal buffet for breakfast on the panoramic terrace. What better way to start the morning than by eating delicious food while enjoying such breathtaking and wide-ranging views? We tucked into homemade pastries, fresh fruit and granola on our first morning before enjoying a cooked breakfast with freshly baked breads on our second day ‒ the Nyons olive bread is a must try!

body and facial treatments. Located in an ancient 18th-century stonevaulted stable with three treatment rooms, one of which is a double room, the team has paid close attention to the spa with cosy features and charming touches to create a calming atmosphere. After being greeted by the beauty therapist, I was whisked away to a room for an expertly executed massage. During my hour-long treatment, the masseuse went to town tackling my problem areas using traditional massage techniques to help me relax, reduce muscle tension throughout my body, and promote blood circulation. I felt all my worries melt away, as well as my knots. An aroma of essential oils filled the dark-lit room and I almost drifted off! The intimate setting combines gentle and effective approaches to enhancing overall wellbeing – I felt fully disconnected from the outside world, bliss!
REST AND RELAX With 17 bedrooms and 17 suites, the hotel offers a stunning range of spaces for all celebrations. Our beautiful suite was complete with a spacious bedroom, lounge area and bathroom with all the amenities needed. The interior was something out of a storybook with a charming style, plush furnishing, neutral materials, an ornate fireplace and a green colour scheme. The red floor tiles are typical of Provence and can be seen throughout the space, through to the bathroom, which has a freestanding bathtub, double sinks and a spacious shower. The luxurious touches continued to the living room with a flat-screen TV, minibar, tasteful artwork, comfortable sofas and armchairs. With the summer approaching, we were thankful for the adjustable air conditioning too! Sleeping in the large, king-sized bed was like laying on a fluffy cloud. The large windows overlooking the valley allowed plenty of natural light for a gentle and calming morning wake-up call, leaving us feeling wellrested and rejuvenated.

nown for its diverse landscapes, picturesque views, iconic lavender fields, vineyards and Mediterranean coastline, Provence is the ultimate honeymoon destination that oozes romance at every turn. When the opportunity arose to visit Maisons Pariente’s Hotel Crillon le Brave, I packed my bags and headed to the airport alongside my partner for a magical stay at the sought-after property. After a short flight and transfers to the five-star destination, we were welcomed by the oh-so-accommodating staff, who gave us a personal tour of the hotel. The charming spaces captured our hearts from the moment we arrived – it was like something out of a movie! The architecture made from blond Crillon stone is perched at the top of the village, boasting captivating views of Mont-Ventoux and the surrounding rolling countryside. Every corner of the private setting offered a stunning backdrop to escape the outside world and disconnect for a while.
and passionate chefs, the service was impeccable on both evenings. My favourite beverage of the trip was the La Douceur de Crillon, a must-try cocktail featuring white peach, apricot from Roussillon, homemade lavender syrup and prosecco – yum! After our meals, we spent time in the bar area, the oldest house in the hotel. Located on the ground floor of the Maison Roche, this gorgeous space provides a cosy setting to relax with a drink in hand, especially with the extensive wine menu! An equally wonderful setting to relax during the day with a game of chess, whilst taking a break from the sun.
THE FINAL VERDICT After such a memorable experience, I cannot recommend Hôtel Crillon le Brave enough! It’s the ultimate setting for romantic honeymoons, with a rural location, spectacular views, delicious dishes, charming buildings and a tranquil setting. The magical trip will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we have many memories to treasure for years – we will definitely be returning!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
EXPLORE PROVENCE
As a massive foodie, I was excited to try the local cuisine. Hôtel Crillon le Brave has two on-site restaurants offering local produce. Head chef Adrien Brunet has presented new menus with locally sourced delicacies, inviting guests on a gourmet journey through Provence. La Madeleine is a Michelin-starred gastronomic restaurant that offers a spectacular experience on a panoramic terrace with must-see views. Expertly balancing textures and flavours, the team has created a gourmet menu with extraordinary dishes exquisitely presented. The bistronomic restaurant, La Table du Ventoux, has a relaxed atmosphere, and Adrien has created a classic menu inspired by the best of southern France. We were privileged to dine at the restaurant twice. On the first night, I enjoyed the tempura scampi for starter, with shiso and juice extract, before tucking it into the Ardèche trout with watercress ravioli and lemongrass broth. I finished off the meal with a soft and fluffy Fraisier cake, which melted in my mouth! On our second evening, I opted for the fish bouillabaisse with a delicious sauce and spring vegetables, followed by the lamb Wellington with chlorophyll, nut-brow buttered polenta, and bay leaf. What better way to finish the meal than with a lemon cheesecake finger adorned with gold flakes? Thanks to the attentive staff
Local attractions and nearby entertainment! •Discover the beautiful village and stunning views on an electric scooter or bike. •Visit the iconic lavender fields that flower mid-June to the end of July. •Calling all wine lovers, discover the many local vineyards and meet the passionate teams behind them. •Arrange a rural picnic with the team, who will supply local products for romantic lunches. •With multiple golf courses nearby, why not swing a few golf clubs for some friendly competition?

MAKING A SPLASH I was desperate to catch some rays after the winter months, and the pool area at Hôtel Crillon le Brave was just what we needed! The heated, turquoise water overlooked the surrounding countryside and provided just enough space to get some morning lengths in. We spent most of our time in the tranquil setting, whether having a dip or enjoying the peaceful atmosphere with a good book. With multiple sun loungers scattered around, guests can easily find the perfect location to sit, whether it’s in the sun or under an umbrella. For the fitness-fanatics, the on-site fitness room boasts all the equipment needed to break a sweat; I recommend enjoying some morning yoga to start the day off before breakfast. Alternatively, I would recommend taking part in some friendly competition with a game of Pétanque, a French sport with the objective of getting boules closest to a target. I’m happy to announce that I won most of our games!

Magical
MAURITIUS
Editor Claire Ridley fell in love with this year-round honeymoon hotspot A LUXURY RETREAT
Greetings from Île Plate
Nestled on the north coast of the island in Anse la Raie (a popular kite surfing spot) sits the five-star, eco-committed boutique hotel Paradise Cove. With Mauritius fast becoming a sustainable island, Paradise Cove’s effort to go green includes being part of the Positive Impact Movement (created by the Attitude hotel group) ensuring local sourcing and no single-use plastic.

I was excited to visit this adults-only tropical paradise, an acclaimed Small Luxury Hotels of the World, having benefitted from a renovation in 2019. It offers a warm welcome with 75 rooms and suites including the Deluxe Premium Rooms, one of which was to become my home for three blissful nights. This honeymoon hideout has been authentically designed in the island’s signature style with wood, rattan and tropical palm-print wallpaper and furnishings. The rooms have been positioned to admire the panoramic cove views, along with the cluster of other areas that make up this glamorous getaway. Centred around the main reception built under a charming thatch roof is the stylish STAY bar; the complimentary tea bar boasting locally grown flavours; the main swimming pool where I enjoyed an early morning dip each day and The Dining Room restaurant where the delicious buffet breakfast was brimming with exotic flavours.
overlooking the jetty and lagoon with far-flung views stretching across to the five north islands in one direction, and the new infinity pool (that’s heated during the winter months) in the other. A highlight was an invite to the launch of the new five-course vegan fine dining experience by Michelin-starred Chef Alexis Gauthier. I tucked into a fondant heart of palm made with pressed watermelon followed by a semi-confit cut of giraumon with a medley of grains and wild rice. The lychee wine is a must-try while you’re on the island, it became my favourite tipple of the trip!
RIDING THE OCEAN WAVES I was lucky enough to hop on board the hotel’s 12-seat catamaran for a full-day cruise around Îlot Gabriel and Île Plate (also known as the Flat Island). After settling in for a suntan, and a delicious barbecue lunch, the boat reached Coin de Mire where it was time to grab my swimmers and jump into the warm Indian Ocean to snorkel (dive enthusiasts can scuba dive here). Looking to make a memory on a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon? Then book a sunset cruise or the Stargazing experience with an astrologer out on the jetty which is just one of the many You&Me Moments the resort offers. Back on land, activities include yoga, Tai Chi, a gym plus two floodlit tennis courts. One of my favourite pastimes was relaxing in the cute love nests dotted around the grounds, promising privacy for honeymooners.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
ISLAND ESCAPE
There’s so much choice between the four restaurants at this dreamy destination with a Dine-Around experience available in three of them for half-board and all-inclusive guests. For delicious sushi, the à la carte Japanese XO restaurant won’t disappoint while if it’s seafood you’re after, try the Cove Restaurant’s private kiosks on the sand for catch of the day. I was in for a treat at the trendy Peninsular Restaurant and bar perched
The wellness journey starts the moment you enter the lush open-air spa where
the tempting treatments are known as Beauty Rituals of the World of the organic French brand Cinq Mondes. I indulged in a 50-minute full body massage with therapist Samantha who used a scented pure coconut oil made on the island. Dreaming of a couple’s massage in one of the love nests at the water’s edge? Consider it done!
WITH LOVE FROM MAURITIUS Step back in time at the historic Château De Labourdonnais, a twostorey, colonial-style Creole mansion and heritage site which was once a sugar plantation. This local landmark boasts French-style furnishings plus an orchard in the grounds that contributes to the fruit production on the island. There’s a rum distillery, plus you’ll be spoilt by the menu choice at La Table du Château, (https://domainedelabourdonnais.com). No trip to Mauritius is complete without a visit to the vibrant capital city of Port Louis with its street markets and bustling scenes - it was a fun way to fill my Insta feed at every turn!
TRAVEL SNAPSHOT Couples can get married at Paradise Cove – the Classic Wedding Package includes locally grown flowers, no single-use plastic and locally sourced ingredients for the dinner – a romantic Renewal of Vows is also an option. HONEYMOONS
Loving the snorkelling trail at Lagoon Attitude
Soaking up the rays at Sunrise Attitude
Chilling out at Gran Zil, Zilwa Attitude
A WARM WELCOME I was invited to stay at the newly opened adults-only Sunrise Attitude, a four-star hotel committed to tourism with a positive impact with 153 rooms commanding prime position on the east coast. It’s opposite the powder-white sandy beach at Belle Mare boasting picture-perfect views of the clear lagoon which I couldn’t wait to swim in. Beach volley is a pastime here, along with sundowners on the shore - the local Phoenix Beer is a must-try! Stand-out features include eight villas with plunge pools where you can wake up to room service. The 28 swimup rooms are another fab offering for honeymooners, linking each terrace to the main Papaya Pool and swim-up bar, plus there’s also Bar 31 boasting a stunning view of the beach and pool. As with all eight Attitude properties, Sunrise Attitude has been designed in keeping with the local surroundings, marrying earthy tones with on-trend, hand-crafted furnishings created by local artisans using locally sourced materials including raffia. In their bid to eliminate single-use plastic, this eco resort provides you with a reusable water bottle and tea and coffee are collected from reusable glass jars at the Bulk Shop - don’t miss sampling the local passionfruit, mango and vanilla tea!
DINE IN STYLE
Headphones on at Secret Sunrise
Learning to cook Mauritian style at dinner with Concita
I had high expectations for an authentic tapas-style dinner at the brand’s signature Kot Nou restaurant (present at all Attitude hotels) and I wasn’t disappointed – you can take a cookery class here to learn the local recipes. Similar to Paradise Cove, the DineAround option allows you to pick between three restaurants on a halfboard basis where you’ll be spoilt for choice! The Market restaurant specialises in local and international delicacies using the freshest seasonal and sustainable ingredients – I tucked into vegan pancakes for breakfast.
The Social House restaurant and bar is an informal setting playing live music during the evening where I shared tasty vegan platters, and my favourite spot for lunch had to be Taba-j, the brightly painted kiosk serving traditional takeout street food. I couldn’t get enough of the local roti washed down with alouda (a Mauritian milkshake). Experience one of your first meals as newlyweds with an invite to a local team member’s home for an Otentik dinner. My host was Concita Fortuno, who welcomed me for a wonderful evening of food, music and dance – she even taught me how to cook gateaux piment (chilli bites!)
EARLY TO RISE I couldn’t wait to experience the Secret Sunrise guided meditation to music on the beach – even if it did mean getting up earlier than normal! Chilling out wearing headphones, it was an experience I’ll never forget. It’s free and takes place twice a week and a private 20-minute session can be arranged, with large groups invited to experience the interactive dance session.
LET THE MAGIC HAPPEN I indulged in treatments at the new Spa POZ (meaning to relax and take a break). Dotted within this tranquil leafy space are single and double open-air creole treatment huts, a salt hammam (that helps to soothe skin problems) and a beauty salon. The vegan spa products packaged in reusable tins are handmade on the island using local plants with 5% of each purchase at Spa POZ (and from the Otentik Bazaars selling souvenirs) donated to
the Green Attitude Foundation helping fund sustainable development projects.
WISH YOU WERE HERE Why not split your stay between the three and four-star Attitude hotels that cater for most budgets in adults-only and family-friendly properties? Coin de Mire Attitude offers great value for money (https://hotels-attitude. com/en/ coin-de-mire-attitude) while Lagoon Attitude boasts 182 rooms including ten romantic whirlpool suites (https://hotels-attitude.com/ en/lagoon-attitude). It’s home to the Marine Discovery Centre, dedicated to the preservation of the marine ecosystem from where I set sail on a glass-bottom boat for a snorkelling trail to marvel at the underwater world. If you’re lucky, you might spot some whales from the boat ride too! I was fortunate to visit Tropical Attitude with its 58 sea-facing rooms and 11 villas with private pools where a floating breakfast can be served (https://hotels-attitude.com/en/ tropical-attitude). A complimentary boat trip departs twice daily from here to the untouched Ile aux Cerfs where I sunbathed on the pure white sand. If you’re searching for a fun-filled family-moon then head to Zilwa Attitude (https://hotels-attitude.com/ en/zilwa-attitude) which faces the northern islands. I couldn’t wait to take the raft over to Gran Zil for a beach barbecue lunch and chill out in an over-water hammock - I didn’t want to leave. Weddings take place here, with exclusive use of the island booked creating memories made in Mauritius.

BODY BLISS
Louise Prance visited Warwickshire’s Ardencote Spa, where she experienced total body bliss and a weekend of wellness…
L
ocated in Warwickshire, Ardencote Spa is easily accessible for a spa day or weekend away, however, upon arriving down the leafy drive, you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Set in 83 acres of landscaped gardens, Ardencote is a modern hotel and destination spa offering everything needed for a weekend of wellness after the big day. A pool, treatment rooms,18-hole golf course, leisure facilities, tennis courts and a restaurant and bar await for a blissful UK-based honeymoon. Upon arrival my partner and I were shown to our sizeable, wellequipped room, one of 110 at the hotel, that overlooked the stunning outdoor pool and jacuzzi. After settling in, this was exactly where we headed first. Whilst the weather was on the cold side for the pool, the temperature of the jacuzzi was just right for a lengthy soak, glass of fizz in hand. Not much could have dragged us away from this lap of luxury, but a full body massage was calling and much needed. Of all the massages I’ve had, this one was up there and highly recommended. If the jacuzzi float had left any aches and pains, the massage certainly rid me of any further niggles! Furthering our relaxation, we induldged in the many spa rooms, including the Himalayan salt sauna, and after final dip in the atmospheric indoor pool the sun loungers were just perfect for whiling away the hours with a good book or post-wedding reminiscing. Feeling a world away from the stresses of everyday life, we enjoyed a luxurious afternoon nap on the sumptuous bed, before getting ready for a delicious dinner at the 1 Rosette Brasserie, which complements the existing and ever-popular Conservatory Bar. I was treated to a delicious vegan burger, while my companion enjoyed a mouth-watering tagine, of course polished off with sizeable desserts. Heading to the bar for a night cap, the aura of calm permeates every aspect of Ardencote and it wasn’t long before we took ourselves to bed,
feeling fully rested, content and peaceful. After a leisurely lie-in the next morning, we headed down for breakfast before another dip in the pool and a stroll around the extensive grounds. If you’re so inclined, you can take part in racket sports tennis, squash and racquetball or table tennis, or take in a round of golf ‒ the winddown options are endless.
AN ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY Ardencote dates back to 1863, when it was built as the dowry house for Mary the daughter of Thomas Phillips, a wool manufacturer from Manchester. Having passed through many hands, and having undergone many extensions and updates since then, the beautiful estate was purchased by local entrepreneur Mr Huckerby in 1996. The Huckerby family still retains ownership, making Ardencote a truly family-run, independent hotel.
