Fun in the sun

Before I tied the knot, several of my friends warned me about the wedding blues – the feeling of sadness once the big day is over. It’s a strange feeling when something you’ve been planning for months or sometimes even years is over in the blink of an eye. To help avoid this, my hubby and I jetted off on our honeymoon to Greece a few days after the wedding. It was wonderful getting to spend quality time with each other, relaxing on the beach and exploring the sights. Having this time together meant we didn’t really feel a sense of sadness that the day was over and it extended our wedding bubble a little bit longer.

If you’re stuck for travel ideas, we have a must-see honeymoon section focusing on gorgeous properties in the UK and abroad. Also in this issue, we reveal the latest catering trends, showcase work from local photographers and some of the best venues in Staffordshire. What’s more, we have real weddings and styled shoots to inspire you.

If you’d like your wedding featured in the magazine or have been involved with a styled shoot, you can submit it at www.yourwestmidlands.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

THE SMELL OF DESIRE

Luluh Lane, an eco-conscious luxury home fragrance and jewellery brand in Shropshire, is offering a new luxury candle. Featuring a crackling infinity wooden wick, the candle offers a seductive scent and includes aphrodisiac oils that help reduce stress and tension.

Using aromatherapy, Luluh Lane have been able to infuse their home fragrance products with the perfect blend of scents to help you de-stress. Emma Moss, the founder and CEO of Luluh Lane, said: “For most, pandemic induced lockdowns created an atmosphere of uncertainty, fear and anxiety. Stress caused by these factors, combined with the inability to experience new things together, significantly impacted relationships, and it was clear within my friendship circle that most of us felt that the romance in our relationships had fizzled out. Myself and co-founder Carly Stone, embarked on a mission to rekindle the flame and romance in our own relationships and want to help others do the same – which is how Luluh Lane was born. Our candles are made with love in-mind, and we have hand-chosen certain oils, which are renowned for playing a powerful role in human connections.”

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The High Field has been crowned the best gastropub in Birmingham and the whole of the Midlands at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022. Now in its sixth year, the awards recognise the best eateries, restaurants, bars, pubs and the people who work in them from across the region. More than 600 people attended the awards, which took place at the Eastside Rooms in Birmingham after a two-year hiatus.

“We are thrilled to have taken home the title of Best Gastropub at this year’s awards, it really does mean a lot,” says the general manager of The High Field, Charlotte Carter. “It’s not the first time we have won – we were delighted to have been given the title in 2016 – but it’s a big deal to win again as we constantly strive to make The High Field the best it can be. We take great pride in putting quality seasonal food on our guests’ plates, keeping their glasses topped up with great beers, wines, spirits and cocktails, and giving them a fantastic experience every time they visit. Being recognised for this in the hotly contended public vote and by leading lights in the hospitality industry here in the city is doubly fantastic!”

A NEW LOOK

The White Lion at Radford Semele has re-opened its doors having been completely transformed inside and out by the new owners. Every inch of the old building has been carefully restored, creating cosy nooks and crannies that are perfect for drinking and dining. There’s a new bar with plenty of spots to linger, lots of original exposed brickwork and dark wooden beams, a light and modern garden room with new bi-fold doors opening onto the terrace and a secluded garden that’s been beautifully landscaped and furnished with lounging sofas and tables for delightful al fresco lunches and suppers.

The new general manager, Lianne Sargent, tells us: “We’ve brought the pub back to life, inside and out and can’t wait to welcome everyone back. The new look is fresh and modern but perfectly in keeping with the building’s history, and we’re looking forward to opening with a menu full of the good stuff. We firmly believe that every great village deserves a great pub, serving seasonal dishes with genuine hospitality, and that’s just what we hope to bring to Radford Semele. I’ll be working with my fantastic team to make sure everyone feels at home, whether you pop in for a glass of wine in the sunshine, spend a couple of hours over a leisurely lunch or come for a celebration dinner with family and friends.”

A MUST-HAVE OFFER!

Ava May Bridal, a bridal boutique in Solihull, is offering every reader who purchases a full-priced gown a free veil worth up to £100. We spoke to the owner, Jen Jamieson, to find out more about this fabulous company: “Ava May Bridal was set up in 2019, so we are still a very young business! My first job when I was 15 was as a bridal consultant, and I dreamt of owning my own shop since then – not that I ever thought it would happen though! However, fate intervened, and I got the opportunity in July 2019 to buy a run-down shop, so I jumped at the chance. I decided to reinvent the shop with a makeover and name change, and Ava May Bridal was born. We are proud to be the UK’s number one stockist of the official Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Collection. We also stock Sophia Tolli, Blue by Enzoani, Pure Bridal and one of my all time favourites – a very boho-inspired range from Wilderly by Allure. We also have a plus-size range which is made up of a combination of the designers I’ve mentioned. We aim to cater for every bride regardless of their budget, age, sexuality, race or size!

“We will put you at ease as soon as you arrive, offer you a drink and start your consultation with your own, personal consultant who will stay with you for every step of the process. We don’t believe in pushy sales techniques, and we would always rather a bride leave 100 per cent happy than be forced into making a decision they aren’t ready for. As well as the standard appointments, we also offer a bigger ‘experience’ appointment which means you can have the whole shop exclusively to yourself and up to eight guests for up to three hours, whilst enjoying a selection of drinks and nibbles. These appointments are available upon request, and I have to say are amazing!”

ESCAPE Treetop

Having recently tied the knot, my hubby and I were eager to enjoy a relaxing minimoon together, so when the opportunity to visit Will’s Treehouse at Winchcombe Farm arrived, we jumped at the chance. An oasis of tranquillity, this five-star glamping retreat has six-holiday homes to choose from, including Warwickshire’s only treehouse. Designed with outdoor living in mind, the treehouse is nestled within four sycamore and ash threes – one of which is even growing through the kitchen! This remote retreat is easy to reach with main roads close by, and it’s only a 20-minute drive from Stratford-Upon-Avon town centre.

UP IN THE SKY

I love exploring a new place, and when we arrived, I was instantly taken aback by how stunning this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was. We parked our car around the back of the property and were delighted to meet the resident alpacas and ponies. After a somewhat extended meet-and-greet with our new neighbours, we headed inside to see what awaited us.

Prior to arrival, we’d researched this family-run retreat, but nothing prepared us for just how wonderful it would be. As we opened the door, we were greeted by a fully-equipped kitchen with a range of SMEG and Joseph Joseph accessories and a luxurious bathroom with a bathtub and toiletries. The interior perfectly combined contemporary design and home comforts, which made us feel instantly at ease. The large living space was complete with a 55-inch Smart TV and DVD player, a sofa which could be moved to reveal two bunk beds, a king-sized bed and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. If that wasn’t enough, we were also treated to a goodie bag upon arrival, which included fresh apples and a delicious cake – yum!

REST AND RELAXATION

Our favourite part of the accommodation was the outdoor area. The treehouse’s terrace includes a private hot tub (which I couldn’t wait to try), a hanging chair, a hammock, an outdoor shower, a barbecue and a pizza oven. As a self-proclaimed pizza connoisseur, I obviously wanted to try the pizza oven and it didn’t disappoint. It was easy to use, thanks to the online guide provided by the owners, and we were really pleased with the result. So much so, that I’ve begun hinting to my hubby to get me one for Christmas much to his dismay. Lounging in the hammock with a cup of tea and a slice of wood-fired pizza, I looked at the surrounding countryside and felt completely at peace. Situated on a private estate, it’s a tranquil space with the only sound coming from the surrounding wildlife.

STAR-CROSSED LOVE

Each holiday home comes equipped with a personal telescope for stargazing. I’d never tried it before, and as my hubby is a space enthusiast, we couldn’t wait to try. Looking at the night’s sky, surrounded

by the beautiful trees, was a wonderful moment that I’ll never forget.

After we’d had far too many cups of tea, enjoyed the luxurious outdoor shower (a must try if you’re staying at the property), cooked dinner and spent the afternoon relaxing in our fluffy robes, it was finally time to try the hob tub. It was very easy to use, and within seconds we were relaxing with a bottle of champagne looking up at the night’s sky. With such hectic lives, it was lovely to just sit and relax together.

After a few hours, we finally jumped into the super-comfy bed and fell asleep watching a film together – the perfect evening. We awoke after the best night’s sleep we’d had in a long time, feeling like royalty. We used the wonderful kitchen to make breakfast before visiting the alpacas and horses once again.

SO MANY CHOICES

With six holiday homes to choose from, there really is something to suit everyone at Winchcombe Farm. Many of the properties have heated geodesic domes with king-sized circular beds, firepits for toasting marshmallows and there’s even a pond with resident ducks.

We loved that Winchcombe Farm works with other local businesses to offer add-on luxury extras, including concierge, pampering, gin delivery, floral decorations, wedding planning and a fine dining private chef service, so you can have the perfect stay without having to go anywhere. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing minimoon or a family getaway, each home has something special to offer.

We were really sad to be leaving after such a wonderful night away and are already planning to return next year!

Love of my life

Demelza and James first met when they were in their early 20s. “We were introduced through mutual friends on a night out,” says Demelza.

“About eight years passed, and we hadn’t seen each other again until a night out in August 2014 when we bumped into one another and exchanged numbers. I believe in fate, and the timing was just right. I thought he was gorgeous, and most importantly, he made me laugh. We are best friends and inseparable.”

James proposed during a weekend away in Bath. “The weekend didn’t go as planned as the heavens opened and we were soaked through,” shares the bride. “In all honesty, I didn’t think James ever wanted to get married, so when he got down on one knee, I thought he was joking. Once I knew he was serious, I didn’t hesitate with my answer, and I was in complete shock for the rest of the weekend. It wasn’t the romantic story that everyone likes to hear, but it was perfect for us!”

Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

Demelza and James celebrated their big day at Bourton Hall surrounded by family and friends Images courtesy of Chris Chambers Photography
REAL WEDDINGS 27

I first went to see Bourton Hall with my mom and dad as James was unable to come, and it felt like home from home. It had the turrets and the look of a castle but let more light in. I fell in love with it straight away. The original décor was stunning, and the chapel was exactly what I was looking for. We went back as a couple and agreed the venue was perfect for us.

We wanted the wedding to be a little over the top but still classy. I didn’t want to stick to a colour scheme, so I used neutral hues with a touch of rose gold and copper.

James and I picked Sally Marie Cakes to create our big-day bake as I had seen her previous work and knew she made the most amazing sugar flowers I had ever seen!

I fell in love with blossom trees and knew I had to have them as they were over the top but still very classy. I explained this to our florist, Wedding Wishes, and she knew exactly what I meant. She produced 10 white blossom trees, which were perfect, and people still talk about them now! For the top table I wanted a long row of flowers to go across the front that matched my bouquet, so I asked for white flowers with some greenery to add a pop of colour.

For our favours, we chose scratch cards, pink gin in small bottles with glitter inside, Lindt chocolates and the children were given a small plastic box filled with sweets and chocolate.

The table plan and place names matched my vellum invites perfectly. They were on frosted plastic with rose gold writing, which looked gorgeous. We decided to go with numbers rather than trying to pick a theme for the table names.

When I had my meeting with Sally, we spoke about incorporating rose gold or copper, and she did just that. The final creation was three tiers, with copper leaf trailing down with roses and eucalyptus leaves. Not only did it look stunning, but it tasted out of this world.

28

I had seen dresses from June Peony Bridal Couture on other brides and knew that if they didn’t have a dress in the shop, that they would be able to make my dream dress. The gown that I originally picked was a basque style, however I wanted straps to make myself feel more comfortable. Helen and Mandy knew exactly what I wanted and made just that. We added more beading to the top and slightly more to the train so that when it was bustled you could see the sparkles in the skirt. It was absolutely amazing, and I didn’t want to take it off. To finish the look, I had a beautiful veil made by June Peony Bridal Couture that everyone still talks about now!

I knew I wanted something for the evening that I would be able to dance in. On my dress journey I went to a shop called Cotswold Bridal Boutique, where I tried on a Eva Lendel playsuit called Lynn. It was so different, and I knew that no one would ever expect me to change into it, so I had to have it! I was luckily able to afford the sample one that fitted me like an absolute dream, and it was just perfect. I found Rawhide Corsets, a sister company of The Couture Company, and Jo made the most perfect made-to-measure corset, so that I could wear the playsuit comfortably in the evening.

We looked at different suitmakers and found Ziggi Menswear in Birmingham. James opted for a three-piece made-to-measure black embroidered dinner suit that looked out of this world. We had an issue with the groomsmen’s suits as the company we ordered them from unfortunately let us down three weeks before the wedding. Luckily we visited Suits U, which were able to fulfil our order, and the men couldn’t have looked smarter.

The only thing that James asked for was a live singer as he loves music. James had already seen clips of Dayton Grey Music, and really wanted him there. Everyone loved him, he got our guests up dancing, and he was so brilliant at singing that some people thought it was a recording until they saw him! We couldn’t have picked anyone better for the job.

The speeches were perfect, I know my dad and James’ best man don’t like public speaking and were nervous about it on the day, but you would never have known. They delivered some emotional speeches, which were hilarious and had everyone laughing.

I saw the bridesmaids’ dresses on a model and just knew my older maids would look stunning in them. I never thought I would want my bridesmaids in white, but as soon as I saw them, I just knew they were right. For my younger bridesmaids, I wanted something more fun, so I opted for a white lace crop top with a mesh midi skirt.

REAL WEDDINGS 29

We had a photo booth from Pouts & Props for the night, which kept everyone entertained. I cannot recommend this company more! The communication was fantastic, we had no issues, and the service was perfect.

The person who I have to thank the most is my mom, as without her hardly any of this would have happened. She was my rock and made my dream wedding come true. She looked wonderful on the day and like a movie star!

Our wedding suppliers did a wonderful job, and nothing was too much for them.

The wedding coordinator, Stuart, made sure the whole day ran as smoothly as possible, even when a random taxi man turned up just as we were going to throw the confetti as he was at the wrong address!

I felt much calmer on the day than I thought I would be. I was ready super early, but I think that helped as I was able to relax. Walking down the aisle was very surreal, and after the ceremony we were given five minutes to ourselves where we were able to reflect. We felt like we were in a bubble and couldn’t quite believe what had just happened!

Our day was honestly magical, I know it’s cliché, and everyone told me it was going to be the best day of my life, but I never really believed them, but it really was.

We still cannot get over the generosity that was shown to us by our guests. We thought that we had asked enough of them by asking them to travel, so for them to give us such generous presents blows our minds!

Let it snow

Jessica and Hayden had a winter-themed wedding at Weston Hall

32

Jessica and Hayden met at university. “Even though we are both from the Telford area, we actually met whilst at Leeds university,” says Jessica. “I was working in a nightclub when Hayden came in for a night out and a colleague of mine introduced us. We got talking and hit it off right away. After we finished university, we moved home together and are best friends, we get on really well and are always laughing and being silly.”

Hayden proposed but not in the way he had originally planned. “We were meant to fly to Rome in March 2020, and he was going to propose there,” shares the bride. “Unfortunately, the trip got cancelled due to COVID-19, so Hayden decided to wait until we could go again, but the pandemic meant we couldn’t reschedule! In the end, Hayden popped the question on Christmas Day 2020. We had already exchanged gifts and were having a coffee in the kitchen when he said he’d forgotten to give me one more gift. It was an A4 sized box, and when I opened it, I saw a picture of Rome. He told me to dig underneath the shredded paper, and I saw two plane tickets which said: ‘where will our next adventure take us?’. He told me to turn it over, and it said flying from ‘Crofts’ (my former name) to ‘Riley’ and the words ‘will you marry me?’. When I looked up, he was on one knee with a ring and asked me the question. I didn’t even look at the ring before hugging him, crying and screaming ‘yes’. I was really surprised!”

SETTING THE SCENE

“Weston Hall was the last venue that we saw, and as soon as we walked through the front doors, we exchanged a look, and just knew it was the one,” explains Jessica. “We were wowed. The staff made us feel so at ease and sorted everything that we needed. They were so attentive and made us feel special.

“For our favours, we chose vintage key-shaped bottle openers for the men and Christmas-scented tea lights for the women,” continues Jessica. “We decorated the space with a welcome sign, a white post-box for cards and a display for photos of my mum and Hayden’s grandma who couldn’t be with us. We also had a beautiful arch and faux petals running down the aisle with candles and pinecones.”

The happy couple opted for a large printed table plan which they placed in a silver frame.

“Our centrepieces were mirror plates with big candelabras in the centre of the table,” adds the bride. “We then had wooden tea light holders, pinecones, faux pink and white roses and a light-up robin near me to represent my mum.”

Jessica and Hayden purchased a three-tiered bake from Amy Bakers Cakes. “It was white, navy and baby pink with our initials on the centre tier,” recalls Jessica. “One tier was fruit cake, another rum and raisin, and the last was chocolate and raspberry. For our catering, we opted for ham hock to start, farmhouse chicken with all the trimmings for main and passionfruit cheesecake for dessert.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

“My dress was called Mel Amanda from Heavenly Wedding Belles under their platinum range,” remembers the bride. “I have always wanted a princess dress, and it was lovely and sparkly. I did customise it, however, by adding a sparklytulle layer and more diamantés to the appliqués. I also wore a tiara, a churchlength veil with beading, a fur shawl for the photos outside, my mum’s wedding earrings and a pearl bracelet with my new last name written on it.”

Hayden chose a navy-tailed suit with an ice blue waistcoat, baby pink tie and brown shoes from Peter Posh Formal Suit Hire. The bridesmaids looked beautiful in navy chiffon maxi dresses with ivory shawls.

We also had a photo booth with props in the evening from Blaze Entertainment. There was a big queue to get photos taken and we have a copy of all the photos from this, and there are some very funny ones! For music entertainment, we had a DJ who took requests, and he even threw in a few Christmas songs!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“We felt like we were in a fairytale on the day,” shares the bride. “We were both nervous before the ceremony, but we soon relaxed when we were together. Our favourite moment was when we were having photos outside in the evening, just the two of us. We had some time to take it all in and spend some time alone. It was magical with all the Christmas lights. The first dance was amazing too and I loved it when everyone joined us at the end.

“Hayden and I gave boxes of decorations to the team at Weston Hall to put out, and my bridesmaids went to check everything looked good downstairs in the morning whilst I was getting my hair done,” continues Jessica. “They came back up with a Mrs & Mrs sign that was on the top table. We hadn’t opened the pack and checked if we’d bought the correct ones! Another funny moment, was at the end of our meal, our arch behind the top table collapsed behind us!”

HONEYMOON

“After Christmas, we went on a minimoon to a hotel in the Wirral and then in April 2021, we did a tour around Sri Lanka for two weeks,” explains Jessica. “We stayed in seven different hotels, and each one did some extra touches for our honeymoon, such as cakes and flowers. We had a lovely time exploring the country.”

A rustic romance

Emma and Andy chose a pink and grey colour palette for their nuptials at Bank House Hotel, Spa and Golf Club Images courtesy of Beki Hare Photography

Emma and Andy met online. “We instantly clicked and knew we were meant to be,” says Emma. “Andy proposed in October 2015 at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. We had taken our daughter to Disneyland Paris, when I was six months pregnant with our son. It wasn’t a significant date, but it was a huge surprise.”

Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 39

We fell in love with Bank House Hotel, Spa and Golf Club as soon as we walked in. We loved how it was all under one roof, there was plenty of room for our guests, the views were stunning, and the price was beyond reasonable. Roz was amazing, and went out of her way to help from the minute she met us.

Andy and I went for a rustic theme with a pink and grey colour palette.

Our big-day bake was created by Alison at Cake Ice.

Our table plan was from VIP Wedding Stationery.
40

My bridesmaids, Sarah and Liv, opted for long pink dresses with alace back from Occasions By Design. Grace, my flowergirl, wore awhite and pink dress from Monsoon.

Everyone went above and beyond to make our wedding special. We really couldn’t have asked for a better day or better people to spend it with.

One of my favourite moments was seeing each other for the first time when I walked down the aisle.

We were on cloud nine on the morning of the wedding. I felt excited, emotional and totally overwhelmed. I wore a Stella York slim-fit lace dress that I accessorised with a veil.

Photographers showcase their favourite images

Your wedding album should be a treasured memento of your big day, so you want it to be packed with fab photos that reflect all of the magical moments. Although fashions may change and hairstyles come and go, the memories are timeless and will be captured forever if you find the right photographer to suit you as a couple and the style of your wedding. To help get you started, we've asked some of the West Midland’s professionals to share their favourite wedding photos from throughout the day.

“Samantha and Wayne look so happy whilst making their way back down the aisle as a married couple with their family and friends showering them with confetti.” – Rebecca Cooper from Becc Photography.

“This couple were so happy and giggly and this photo always makes me smile.” – Leanne Brookes from LB Photography.

“An intimate moment between Ellie and George which captures their love perfectly.” – Molly Georgia from Molly Georgia Photography.

“Beth and James’ wedding at Grittleton House was a dream to capture and a day full of emotion. Beth took it all in her stride and her excitement and joy was so clear to see during the ceremony.” – Chris Kelly from Ginger Jam Photography.

“This image captures one of the happiest moments of a wedding, seconds after saying “I do”. Everyone is so happy and ready to celebrate!” –Heather Rees from Heather Rees Photography.

“I love that one of the family members hand-picked the petals from her garden for the bride and groom’s wedding day. I thought there was something super special about this particular confetti throw!” – Abigail Aston from Abi Lauren Photo.

“Obie waited perfectly for his big moment as this couple said: “I do”. Unfortunately, he stood at the back of the room and didn’t do exactly as he was told, but it worked out perfectly for me with this shot.” – James Merrick from James Merrick Photography.

“This is one of my favourite photos from their wedding. The couple was so happy all day and never without a smile.” – Leanne from LB Photography.

“We shot this image just as the sun was setting on the beautiful Peak District hills. It was so picturesque and romantic.” – Molly from Molly Georgia Photography.

HOLD ME CLOSE

“This couple loved including a smoke bomb into their special day, and it really made their photos pop!” – Abigail from Abi Lauren Photo.

“Earlier this year I was in the Lake District with Sam and Adam for their big day, the weather was incredible and we were looking for a spot to find shade. Having scouted a location earlier in the day, I persuaded the couple to trust me and walk up a pretty steep patch of woodland and got this.” – Chris from Ginger Jam Photography.

“Golden hour is one of my favourite parts of the day as it creates such warm colours and a romantic atmosphere. This sunset was so beautiful and also shows the church in the background.” – Heather from Heather Rees Photography.

“Sometimes you are blessed with the best sunset imaginable, and for Harriet and Ed, strolling along as husband and wife, it was the perfect end to the day.”

– James from James Merrick Photography.

“I love this natural and joyful moment of Kate laughing with her friends during her drinks reception.” – Rebecca from Becc Photography.

“Lucy and Glyn celebrated their wedding reception with singing waiters and it created the most incredible atmosphere. Before long the guests were all on their feet dancing and singing along and the bride and groom enjoyed every second.” – Chris from Ginger Jam Photography.

“This photo makes me smile. I caught these groomsmen filming themselves having a great time and bursting into laughter. Completely spontaneous and full of fun!” – Heather from Heather Rees Photography.

“I love all the emotion and laughter this image captures.” – James from James Merrick Photography.

“I love how this image turned out, thanks to the lights in the distance and the great views.” – Molly from Molly Georgia Photography.

“Here is the bride’s reaction as she was stunned by the magician and couldn’t work out how he did it!” – Leanne from LB Photography.

BIS FOR BARBECUE

Sure to please, a barbecue is the ideal fit for a summer wedding. It’s simple to cater for all tastes and dietary needs, plus the theatre of the food cooking amongst you creates a wonderful atmosphere.

DIS FOR DOUGHNUTS

Why not create a bespoke cocktail for your drinks reception, something that reflects your theme or you as a couple? Irrhysistible Drinks is a Wolverhampton-based cocktail and shot company. “We’ve invented our own sweet and strong-flavoured drinks,” says owner Rhys Linton. “Our five flavours are cherry, strawberry and lemon, tropical, orange and peach and pineapple and coconut. These are available as both cocktails and shots. We’ve had a lot of orders for wedding favours where we’ve personalised the labels to match the décor or couple’s taste.” Check out www.irrhysistibledrinks.co.uk

GIS FOR GRAZING

IS FOR FAVOURS

Factor some treats into your wedding favours for happy faces all around. How about some personalised cookies or mini bottles of your favourite tipple?

The doughnut wall: surely the best invention to hit the wedding market in recent years! These hoops of joy are bound to prove popular, and provide great fuel for the dancefloor. Check out www.jabsevents.com

EIS FOR ECO-FRIENDLY

One way to make your big-day dining sustainable is to opt for biodegradable dinnerware if you’re eating al fresco or in a buffet-style setting. Look for ethically-sourced and environmentally-friendly materials such as bamboo, wood, paper or plant-based compostable products. It’s also worth checking out your venue’s policy on recycling.

FStill massively on trend, grazing platters are a great way of encouraging interaction between your guests and are super delicious to boot. Think artisan cheeses, meats, nuts, fruits, crackers, breads and more. “At Spreads and Breads, we create food that brings people together,” says Sarah and Charlotte. “We offer a cooler alternative to a buffet, where beige food and tiny canapés don’t cut it! Based in Solihull, we specialise in grazing tables, platter boards, wooden trays and eco boxes and with our passions for food, floristry and tablescape styling, we promise to blow your guests away. Our bespoke displays are made up of quality ingredients, sourcing where possible artisan cheeses, cured meats, chutney, fresh fruits and vegetables, ensuring you are getting top-quality produce. We are more than happy to work with you to make your grazing platters and tables as bespoke as you like and follow any themes you may have.” Check out www.spreadsandbreads.co.uk

HIS FOR HOG ROAST

The versatility of a hog roast makes it one of the most popular forms of wedding catering. Serve with an array of salads and sides for an informal wedding breakfast feast or incorporate as an evening food station. “I’ve been involved with the hog roast industry for around six years,” says Sara from Poteys Pigroast. “COVID-19 happened, and my old boss retired which took me to buying my own equipment and Poteys Pigroast was started in May 2022. With help from my partner Tristan and both of our teenage sons we have established a familyrun business and travel up to an hour from our base in Coventry. Perfect for any occasion, we provide hog roasts and other mouth-watering catering for parties, corporate events and weddings. We pride ourselves on using locally sourced, free-range meat, slow cooked to perfection. The delicately seasoned meat falls of the bone, complemented by our freshlybaked bread rolls and home-made sauces.” Check out Poteys on Facebook.

JIS FOR JUST TOO GOOD TO RESIST

The Pudding Post all started during the last lockdown. “With a passion for good food and international catering experience we set about creating a beautiful-converted horse box to cater for weddings and events,” says Kevin Budd. “Our speciality bubble waffles are served in eight varieties using fresh fruit and only the best natural ingredients which are sourced from eco-friendly suppliers. Our other speciality are authentic Belgian waffle sticks, a taste you will never forget and is bound to bring a ray of sunshine into your day. We are very proud of our service and will always go beyond expectations to make your event a time to remember. From birthdays and weddings to festivals and garden parties, we will provide the best available at an affordable price.” Check out www.facebook.com/thepuddingpost

KIS FOR KNOWLEDGE

The benefits of consulting a professional can never be underestimated. Whether it’s your venue’s recommended caterer or one you’ve sourced for yourself, they’ll work closely with you to create the menu of your dreams. They’re a source of all wisdom when it comes to your wedding breakfast, so don’t be afraid to ask them anything.

MIS FOR MOBILE BAR

The choices are practically endless with more fun and fab ideas cropping up all the time. We love horsebox bars that serve speciality tipples such as an array of gins or prosecco for your post-vow reception.

LIS FOR LATE

The wedding breakfast can end up being served quite late in the day by the time you’ve said: “I do,” and popped off for your photographs. So, to prevent your loved ones flagging, ensure there are plenty of delicious canapés on hand for the drinks reception. A selection of five to six is a good guide and we love the idea of mini fish ‘n’ chip cones or warming bitesize pies for the winter.

NIS FOR NO WASTAGE

Food wastage at weddings is a huge issue, so find out if your venue is signed up to a scheme to stop wastage. If not, you could consider donating any leftovers to the local food bank.

OIS FOR ORIGIN

Some venues grow their own herbs and vegetables and many caterers will support local farmers by using their meat and produce. Serving locally-sourced food at your wedding not only adds to the ambience, but also supports the community, ensures quality and offers sustainability by reducing the miles it’s had to travel.

IS FOR PIZZA

Pizza trucks are a great option for the evening reception. With a variety of flavours on offer, there’ll be something to keep even the fussiest eaters happy. Calàbbria Pizza and their authentic Neapolitan stonebaked pizzas are a delicious option for any wedding. “Over 18 months we have catered for more than 50 weddings across the UK,” says Callum Maisey. “We’ve served at all types of weddings, from sit-down formal wedding breakfasts in Stratfordupon-Avon to informal buffets in rustic barns in Tenbury Wells, we’re more than happy to tailor our set-up to suit your theme.” Check out www.facebook.com/calabbria.pizza

QIS FOR QUICHE

Buffets are still the most popular option for an evening feast. If that conjures up less than appetising images of quiche and sandwiches for you, fear not. The modern buffet is a thing of beauty with options like street food stations, tapas, sausage sarnies and mini sliders.

P 54

RIS FOR RAISE A GLASS

Make sure your guests have a glass in hand to toast your nuptials. Try some local flavour by checking out your local vineyard, and who doesn’t love a pimp your prosecco station?

TIS FOR TRADITIONAL

Have a think about the ambience you’re trying to create and that’ll steer you towards a dining style. Is an elegant, more traditional seated three-course dining experience your thing, or do you dream of a relaxed boho-vibe with food trucks or table plan-free grazing?

VIS FOR VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN

SIS FOR SEASONAL

If you’re stuck for what to serve, tailoring your menu according to the season is always a lovely way to go. Think fresh flavours in the summer or warming comfort food for the winter. You could even offer Christmas pud for dessert with gingerbread favours at your festive nuptials.

IS FOR UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES

Whatever food option you go for, make it beautiful! Ceremony arches can be moved and utilised in your reception space – they provide a stylish backdrop for any food, dessert or cake table for example.

One stress-free way to ensure all dietary needs are catered for is to create an inclusive menu with options to suit everyone. The days of bland and uninspiring vegetarian food are long gone. Alternatively, offer dishes with an interchangeable element should someone need a vegan or dairy-free option, that way you can still have your dream menu with just a few switches. If you’re looking for a caterer who can offer a wide range of dishes as well as a bespoke service, then we suggest Caviar & Chips. “Everything we do starts with a blank piece of paper,” says co-owner Marc Hornby. “We work in a bespoke way so that you can enjoy your favourite food, drinks and ingredients served exactly how you like it. Our aim is to create unforgettable memories for everyone through our catering. Whether the events we cater for are in the woods, yurts, tipis, marquees, barns or stately homes; everyone receives the Caviar & Chips experience of exceptional service and distinctive food. We’re a preferred caterer at more than 30 wedding and event venues across the UK and have won multiple awards as best caterer. Our chefs will work their magic and bring together your ideas with their catering, food and drink expertise to craft a menu just for you. We arrange a date, and prepare your menu tasting for you to try, free of charge, just like an intimate, private dinner party.” Check out www.caviarandchips.co.uk

WIS FOR WORLD CUISINE

Spice up your life with an exciting international menu. If you love overseas travel and want the all-important meal to reflect this, talk to your caterer about serving your favourite world cuisine. Your wedding will be the talk of the town!

XIS X MARKS THE SPOT

Don’t forget to incorporate catering options into your RSVPs. Your caterer will need to know of any food intolerances or dietary requirements ahead of time when tailoring your menu.

ZIS FOR ZOOM

YIS YORKSHIRE PUDDING

The idea of a wedding carvery fills us with joy! Everyone will be delighted by a roast dinner, and you also have that added element of interaction and entertainment as designated guests carve at the table in chef’s hat and pinny.

It’s important to meet with your wedding caterer ahead of time and work together to plan the perfect feast. If face-to-face meetings are still an issue, or distance is a factor, most will offer a virtual catch up, so there’s no excuse!

STEP INTO SPRING

When this styled shoot landed in our inbox, we just knew that our lovely readers would adore it. To find out more, we spoke to Jess from April Days Design, who tells us: “I went to view Blithfield Lakeside Barns and was lead through beautiful country lanes, which I instantly fell in love with. I took this as inspiration for our styled shoot, using whimsical flowers, berries and foraged foliage. The wedding barn overlooks Blithfield Reservoir, and I wanted to style the inside of the venue to reflect the nature outside and its stunning surroundings. I got in touch with a group of talented local suppliers, all based in the West Midlands, to work together on this shoot to showcase our work.

“The pallet was muted with whites, greys and greens, which

complemented the wooden beams in the barn and its white walls. The tablescape was a main focus, as I believe it’s important to create a welcoming space and seating area for your guests. The table was dressed in seasonal berries that reflected the menu with matching stationery, an abundance of fresh flowers, delicate draping linens and raw edge napkins to create a picnic feel while keeping the formalities of a wedding breakfast.

“The suppliers did an amazing job and created an effortless look that also felt super chic and wearable for modern couples. We were so pleased with the final images from the amazing talented Danielle Victoria Photography.”

HOT TOPIC: wedding worries

Our experts solve your problems

ECO-FRIENDLY FLOWERS

We want our wedding to be as environmentally friendly as possible. How can we extend this to our flowers?

Sustainability and eco-friendly are words that we are all too familiar with now, so how do we extend this to your wedding flowers? It’s not as complicated as it sounds. In terms of your actual flower choice, ensure they are seasonally available from British growers. This will eliminate the need to order from abroad, limit transportation, and not to mention packaging!

Hiring silk arrangements from your venue stylist and florist is the ultimate eco-friendly option. Many of these ranges are made and hired out time-after-time, so are “recycled” from one wedding to the next. Not only do they look great and very realistic, if professionally made, but it can be a cheaper option. If, however you don’t want to compromise on fresh flowers, you can always find a florist that uses fresh moss and twine as an alternative to oasis, tape and plastic trays.

Other things you can do to help the planet are using recycled-glass jars for your fresh flower bouquets as centrepieces or decoration around the room. You can also give your loved ones fresh, biodegradable confetti for those all important photographs.

Your favours can also help save the bees with a wild seed mix. It will ensure bees and other wildlife will benefit from your choice and your guests will have a lasting reminder of your big day.

WINTER LUXE

What dress styles would you suggest for a winter wedding?

It’s important to remember that you can wear any dress at any time of the year. However, if you want a traditional winter wedding, look for a heavier fabric like satin or mikado in an A-line or princess-cut.

Alternatively, embrace the elegance of a black-tie theme with a sexy dress with one-shoulder or a thigh-split lace and sparkly gown.

To make your look more wintry and wearable in the cold, we recommend items such as faux fur shrugs and rich colours to accessorise with, such as deep purples or the traditional Christmas reds and greens.

Two of our favourite gowns that embody these looks are Kennedy by Sophia Tolli (pictured) and Tiana by Disney Fairy Tale Weddings Collection.

BELOVED PETS

My hubby-to-be and I want to incorporate our beloved dog into our wedding. What should we take into consideration?

Begin by checking that your wedding venue is dog friendly. Once you’ve done this, try and find a dog-loving photographer and videographer. Whoever you choose, make sure to let them know what your plans are for having your pet at your wedding.

Consider your dog’s temperament and what their role might be. There are so many ways you can include your pooch – they could be your ring bearer, VIP guest or flower dog. They could even walk down the aisle with a member of your wedding party, but please ensure that your dog has the right temperament to cope with all the attention.

Invest in a chaperone. A chaperone will plan, coordinate, and take on all the stresses on your wedding day. Our chaperone service is very much in demand, with couples booking for 2023, 2024 and beyond, so please book in advance to avoid disappointment. We cover the West Midlands region, including Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire plus Wales and London. Nationwide cover is also available upon request.

Choose an epic outfit. If you’re considering a flower collar or tuxedo harness, make sure that it’s safe, made-to-fit and is comfortable for your pet. Certain flowers or foliage can be poisonous to dogs, so it’s vital to check or consider artificial flowers.

Finally, let your guests know. A simple note on your invitations or just telling your loved ones that you plan to have your dog with you at your wedding, means that they come prepared, especially if they are nervous around dogs or allergic to them. However, if your pooch is a surprise guest or ring bearer, it may be advisable to tell the nervous and anxious guests beforehand.

AL FRESCO ROMANCE

We would love to have a harpist at our outdoor wedding. Is there anything we should consider before booking?

Having a harp for an outdoor wedding is an excellent choice, but you need to check with the harpist that they can cope with the problems which may arise in a garden or woodland setting. If they have a harp which is suitable for the terrain at your chosen venue, consider the following:

Will the harp be damaged by the rain or sun? Will the venue provide shelter for the harpist? I have often played at venues where there is cover for the wedding party and the guests, but the musicians and photographer are left in the rain. My solution is to have a carbon-fibre harp with gold plated levers, so none of it is damaged by the weather.

If your supplier has a full-sized concert harp, is there reasonable access on a level path for pushing a heavy harp on a trolley? Will there be a level and firm base for the harp to stand on?

There may not be any power points available, so a good wireless

amplifier will be very helpful, especially with a gut-strung soft-toned harp playing for large numbers. A wireless amplifier, with a wireless transmitter, can be hidden discreetly behind bushes and not seen. A carbon-fibre harp is also a great option as it has nylon strings with a very bright sound, which carries really well outdoors.

Will they use digital music or paper music? If the latter, the wind can be a real problem.

These are the logistical considerations that I have discovered over recent years, with far more outdoor weddings now than there used to be. However, the main consideration must be that you enjoy the music that your harpist plays and have a good rapport with them. I would highly recommend meeting your harpist in person and hearing them play before booking.

EXPERT ADVICE 61

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Our wedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details andmade sure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minutemeeting with her to run through the plan for the day, whichwe found was a great help and meant we knew exactly what toexpect. I recommend booking a venue with a dedicated weddingcoordinator or hiring an external company, so that you can relaxand enjoy yourself without having to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our photographer while he was working at a friend’s wedding. He has an amazing style that we both loved, and we found him really easy to be around. One of the best things we did in the run-up to the wedding was book a prewedding shoot. We were both quite nervous in front of the camera, and this put us at ease and meant that when we got to the big day, we both felt relaxed having our picture taken.

62

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening receptionthat would get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazingtrio who learnt our first dance song and incorporated someof our favourite tunes into their set list. We were a bit worriedthat people would get bored or restless throughout the day, butall of our guests were quite content chatting during the drinksreception, and I’m quite glad we kept things scaled back as itallowed us to catch up with friends and family who we hadn’t seenin a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’tmeet until the morning of the wedding. Originally, this mademe feel anxious but the whole process went smoothly, and theladies conducting our service were calming and reassuring. Weincorporated promises to each other in our vows that we feltrepresented us as a couple. For those of you about to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, as there’s nothing morespecial than looking into your partner’s eyes and telling them howmuch you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub

£13, 100ml, www.glossybox.co.uk

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial Cream

£24, 75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, 15ml, www.lookfantastic.com

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology!

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors.

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body.

£18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it looked!

WEDDING-READY SKIN

We all know stress can play havoc with our skin and let’s face it, planning a wedding can be trying. Peace Out skincare has a range of solution-based products to ensure your complexion is picture-perfect on your big day.

It all starts with the prep and so it’s time to bring your A-game… vitamin A that is! Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Start using three-months prior to the nuptials to ensure you’re wedding ready.

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

NATURAL BEAUTY

I don’t wear a lot of make-up, so how do I create the perfect look while still feeling like me?

To create a bridal look where you feel like yourself, skincare preparation is key. Ensure you are cleansing your skin twice a day, exfoliating once a week and using a moisturiser suited to your skin type to help you look hydrated and glowy. Having this base will limit the amount of products used creating a more natural look.

Using a tinted moisturiser instead of a foundation will feel more lightweight but still even out your complexion. Apply a little concealer in the areas where discolouration and breakouts appear, and remember less is more! Lightly apply bronzer, blush and highlighter to give you a lovely glow.

Lightly fill in sparse areas on your eyebrows to give that full but natural effect. Add individual lashes to the outer corner of the eye to enhance your natural lashes without making them feel heavy and add a little shimmer on the lid to make your eyes pop!

Use a lipstick colour that is close to your natural lip. I love Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk, which will add colour but still look natural.

Creating your bridal look, is all about enhancing your natural beauty and not masking it, as it’s important that you feel like you on your big day!

FITS LIKE A GLOVE

I have a very full bust. What dress styles will suit me, and how can I get the right support?

It’s a great question and one we face on a daily basis. Begin by researching designers and visiting boutiques that stock their dresses. Our top designers for a full bust include Maggie Sottero and Essense of Australia as their designs offer lots of beautiful, supportive fabrics with great bust cups, giving you better support and comfort.

Your consultant will help you find the right styles to try on and will be there to help and guide you along the way by listening to your ideas and any concerns you may have. The great news is a lot of necklines can work on a full bust, from V-neck and sweetheart to a square neck and Bardot.

Your stylist will ensure that you are measured correctly for your dress which may mean ordering a slightly bigger size to give you the all important bust coverage. Working with a great seamstress is vital, as they will fit the dress to your body and can even add extra boning or additional bra support if needed.

THE mane EVENT

Nicole Petty, haircare expert for Milk + Blush, shares 2022’s most popular wedding hair trends and how to achieve them

MESSY BUN

Although, achieving the perfect messy bun can feel like an impossible task TikTok has the answer with a viral hack that’s seen more than six million views…

Section your hair into two ponytails and twist into rope braids. Next, tie the ends of the hair back into the pony to create two loops. Finally, thread one loop through the other to create the bun and secure in place with bobby pins. To elevate the look into the bridal realm, pull out some face-framing tendrils and loosely curl them for the ultimate romantic up do.

POLISHED PONYTAIL

With heatwaves expected to become more frequent, ponytails are a popular and chic style to sport for comfortably enjoying your summer wedding. Take inspiration from Ariana Grande, who showed off her trademark sleek high pony at her wedding last year.

To get this voluminous look, make two ponytails with your top and bottom layers. Next, create a gap in the top pony that you can thread the bottom through to create a layered look. If you need more length, why not invest in clip-in extensions?

FLIPPY BOB

We often think of long hair being the height of romance, but shorter wedding hair is having a moment in 2022. Many have taken inspiration from Kourtney Kardashian's latest look and have adopted her flippy bob for their big days.

To get the look, use a hair mousse for plenty of volume. Then, with a round brush, blow dry the ends upwards to create the flick. Follow with the cool setting to help your locks stay in place and finish by spritzing with hairspray.

HOLLYWOOD WAVES

Nothing exudes glamour like Hollywood waves, a firm favourite among brides. Jennifer Lopez showed just how stunning the style can be at her recent wedding to Ben Affleck, styling her hair in loose curls, with the top layer pulled back into a subtle bouffant.

To recreate the look, use a oneinch curling iron to curl the tresses in layers from the bottom up, holding the curling iron horizontally and rolling the hair downwards as though you’re using rollers. Finish by gently combing through and positioning the hair to create continuous waves before holding the still-hot curling iron against where they dip and clip them in place to cool and set.

HALF-UP, HALF-DOWN

Romantic, versatile and effortlessly elegant this has been one of the most popular styles for brides to wear this year.

Almost anyone can wear a half-up, half-down do, but for those with fine hair, consider investing in some extensions for more body. Focus on creating some height at the crown with some volumising spray and backcombing.

For clip-in hair extensions to boost your look, check out www.milkandblush.com

Grooms editor Melissa Cullen reveals the latest best buys and product launches

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

HONEYMOON NEWS 83

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi McFarlane (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon).

There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Allow some time in this bustling area that offers a romantic mix of old meets new. Viva España!

The ultimate

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to the airport!

Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some cocktails.

We had a farewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

86

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.
