Yes, it’s that magical time of the year once again! I don’t know about you but this year has passed by quickly for me, and luckily it has been a wonderful one. We’ve celebrated my mum and dad’s Golden Wedding Anniversary, we’re looking forward to welcoming our Australian relatives to the UK this Christmas and my brother and sister-in-law are having their first baby this December which is the best present ever! I also managed to take a couple of sun-drenched trips this year, including to Oia in Santorini where I stayed at the fabulous Villa Mellow, booked through The Greek Villas (https:// thegreekvillas.com/destinations/santorini-villas/oia/mellow) and to Athens where I was very spoilt in the rooftop 501 Milos Terrace Suite at boutique hotel xenodocheio Milos (https://xenodocheiomilos. com). Read all about these wonderful properties, perfect for honeymooners in my Greece is the word review on page 92.

To celebrate the festive period, we’ve compiled a seasonal issue for you to enjoy. There’s everything from summery-themed real weddings and a colourful styled shoot for couples planning al fresco nuptials next year to snow-capped venues perfect for winter weddings. Don’t miss the latest news, offers, fashion, beauty and honeymoon ideas plus there are handmade picks for those planning a DIY wedding, and advice about big-day photography and videography.

For those of you getting married soon then I wish you many congratulations and for those not taking the plunge until 2023, I’ll see you next issue.

Happy Christmas!

One of my favourite European countries is Greece which I’ve been fortunate enough to visit many times. On this trip, I soaked up the warm sunshine in Santorini at Villa Mellow and admired the city views in Athens from the rooftop terrace at hotel xenodocheio Milos. Find out how you can book a dream honeymoon at both properties on page 92.

Look how romantic new hotel The Retreat Elcot Park looks here, perfect for a winter escape. I can’t wait to visit this West Berkshire-based property. Turn to page 19 where all will be revealed.

Anyone who knows me well will tell you how much I love anything that glitters! So when our colourful styled shoot for this issue, photographed by the talented Brad Gommon Photography, landed in my inbox, I fell in love with the idea of having a Glitter Bar at a wedding! Turn to page 49 to see more.

This stunning look was created by Berkshire-based make-up

who is our beauty expert this issue on page 84.

Thanks to The Cocktail Society for the delicious Salted Caramel Espresso Martini that they sent to me in time for the festive season – read all about it on page nine!

How cool is the outdoor terrace located on the first floor of the recently opened Hotel La Tour in Milton Keynes? Hannah and Alfie chose this venue for their spring celebration photographed by Jeff Oliver Photography. Read all about it on page 42.

I’ve always been a fan of actress Sarah Jessica Parker, especially her Manolo Blahnik-loving character Carrie Bradshaw so when I spotted bride Laura’s shoes at her wedding to Hugh on page 30, I added them to my Christmas wish list!

Pastel colours are my favourite so I fell in lust with the sugar-coated details at Caroline and Rob’s wedding that was beautifully captured by Absolute Photo UK at De Vere Latimer Estate in Buckinghamshire and can be seen in full on page 37.

It has always been my dream to have a roll-top slipper bath so when I spotted The Disco Tub, a photo booth tub to be hired from wedding, event and prop hire company The Boho Shack (www.thebohoshack.net) I simply had to choose it as my Editor Loves for this issue - what a great idea for a wedding! STICKS’N’SANTA IS BACK

Nearlywed

The latest news from around the counties

Sticks’n’Sushi has announced the return of its popular festive set menus, offering guests a tasty alternative to the traditional turkey and stuffing with enticing Japanese-inspired dishes ideal for pre-Christmas get-togethers.

Until Christmas Eve, three set menus will be available for pre-booked tables of seven or more guests, providing the perfect opportunity to celebrate the festive season with a unique fusion of Japanese and Danish cultures. It will be available at all of their restaurants including their Oxford-based one.

The Festive Menu (£40 pp) includes mouth-watering speciality dishes such as the Shake Tataki made with fresh salmon, daikon, cress, kizami wasabi and ponzu, a Red’n’Green Roll made with roasted pepper, avocado, cucumber, yuzu-kosho, shiso and tsume and the Chicks’n’Blankets stick – a playful take on the Christmas dinner staple.

For those who want their Christmas celebration to sparkle a little brighter, the Mistletoe Menu (£65 pp) is also available, including premium dishes such as the lobster korokke starter of lobster croquettes with shiso and lobster mayo or Gindara No Miso made with delicate black cod and miso.

The Green Menu is also available for guests who follow a plant-based diet. Priced at £40 pp, it includes dishes packed with flavour, like the Portobello Tataki confit mushroom made with truffle oil, ponzu, kizami wasabi and daikon, and Imo Yaki sweet potato stick with coriander cress and teriyaki.

Group bookings placed on a Monday or Tuesday will also receive a glass of Veuve Clicquot for each guest at the table as an extra-special

Christmas gift from the Sticks’n’Sushi elves (conditions apply).

Smaller groups and walk-in guests are also able to have a little taste of Christmas with three seasonal dishes in addition to the all-new main menu. These are the Robusuta Korokke, Wagyu Aburi Nigiri and Miso Fried Sprouts – the perfect Japanese twist to convert even the most avid sprout-hater!

For guests wanting a seasonal tipple, look no further than the special Pear & Ginger Fizz cocktail made with Japanese whisky infused with cinnamon and cloves, pear puree, lemon juice, gingerbread syrup and topped with ginger beer. Or why not try Matcha Eggnog - a brilliantly creative take on the classic Christmas drink?

THE LOCH & THE TYNE ANNOUNCES MAJOR PRICE REDUCTIONS

Adam Handling, the owner of the Adam Handling

Group, is responding to the rising cost of living at his restaurant The Loch & The Tyne, Old Windsor, by offering a real reduction on the price of the seven-course tasting menu that has been reduced by £25.00 per person and is available now. He is also extending choice on the à la carte menu and introducing a new set-price lunchtime menu.

Awarded an impressive three rosettes at the recent AA Awards in London, The Loch & The Tyne restaurant, rooms and terraces maintains the Adam Handling Restaurant Group’s ethos of sustainable British luxury and already offers the most sought-after and highest-rated accommodation in the Windsor area.

“By reducing our prices, whilst maintaining the full quality of what we do best, we’re helping destination and local guests get an amazing meal with us at even better value, at a time when we’re all feeling the pinch. And we’re giving greater choice for regulars by adding more a la carte dishes, so we can welcome them back more regularly,” says Adam. He continues, “The kitchen team, headed by Steven Kerr and Jonny McNeil, has been using their skills and refined techniques to make sure that every part of the highquality produce we use goes into sensational and seasonal dishes and reduces the emphasis on some of the most expensive ingredients, so we can bring down prices overall.”

The new seven-course tasting menu price has been reduced to £55.00 per head (previously £80.00) and includes lobster, plaice and pork. The plant-based tasting menu has been reduced to £50.00 per person including squash, courgette and cauliflower and the à la carte menu has been extended with a wider choice of snacks, small or large servings, classics and desserts. A highlight on the menu is the lobster rarebit omelette made with St Ewe’s eggs and Cornish lobster. This indulgent dish was created 10 years ago in Adam’s first-ever restaurant.

Other new à la carte dishes include crispy plaice with an anchovy emulsion and a whey butter sauce or Cornish mussels steamed in a green curry sauce. “We’ve opted for a more mix-and-match approach so that guests can have a wider choice of small and large dishes and make up their à la carte menu with options for sharing,” says the well-known chef.

The legendary The Loch & Tyne Sunday Lunch is priced at two courses at £48.00 per person and three courses at £58.00 per person.

PEPPERMILLS IN ASCOT CROWNED REGIONAL TAKEAWAY OF THE YEAR AT ARTA

Peppermills in Ascot has been crowned the Regional Takeaway of the Year – South Central, at the Asian Restaurant & Takeaway Awards (ARTA) 2022, the largest celebration of Britain’s vibrant Asian restaurants and takeaway industry. To unveil the finalists, ARTA spotlighted more than 2,370 restaurants and takeaways across the UK that were nominated by more than 700,000 customers of ARTA ‘s strategic partner, ChefOnline which is the digital application to order food and book tables on the go.

The winners were selected by an esteemed panel of ambassadors and judges comprising executive chef and the multi-award-winning celebrity chef Chand Rahman; Mohammed Mujibur Rahman, the ex-mayor of Corby and Graham Taylor, senior chef lecturer of Cambridge Regional College.

Restaurants were awarded based on three key factors: Quality of Food, Quality of Service, and Value for Money, followed by the ARTA score, which includes Food Hygiene Ratings and reviews from websites like TripAdvisor and Google. Restaurants that made it through the first phase were judged and invited to participate in a Cook-Off Competition. The score included various factors including flavour, appearance, texture, hygiene, and aroma.

Photographer David Bostock has just been awarded a Fellowship qualification from the Master

Association (FMPA) with a stunning panel of images of black and white wedding photography, which is David’s speciality.

The five judges commented on the unique style of the images within the panel (all shot on a Cannon 5Dmk4 or R5 or R6 camera) that, when viewed together, formed a cohesive body of work. The commitment to producing photographs of sheer quality was obvious to every member of the judging team.

Fellowship of the MPA is a very difficult qualification to achieve within the photographic profession, as this takes a great deal of time, work and dedication to your art to reach this level. There are only four master photographers with a Fellowship in Wedding Photography in the UK and David, based on the borders of Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire is now one of them.

In addition to their images, photographers must also produce an in-depth working profile about work and business practices. This document covers essential elements such as health and safety, that must be understood when dealing with the public, and also documents a photographer’s creative approach and

future ambitions.

Couples should only book a qualified professional photographer for their wedding because it’s the only way of guaranteeing the best creative photographs and personal service possible.

David tells us, “It has been a goal of mine ever since I became a professional photographer to obtain the coveted Fellowship qualification. Fourteen years of professional photography, honing my skills week in and week out at more than 500 weddings have brought me to this point and I was completely over the moon to be awarded my Fellowship of the Master Photographers Association in Weddings in September at The Photography show. I have always loved black and white photography since the days I had a darkroom in my teens and did my own processing and my black and white imagery in both the reportage/documentary and fine-art/ fashion areas of wedding photography, along with my colour work, very much represents my signature style. Having been awarded this Fellowship means I can get more involved in training and mentoring other photographers and provide wedding couples with the highest level of photography on their special day.”

The Relais Henley is an idyllic waterside retreat located in this iconic town on the River Thames. Situated in a restored heritage building that was traditionally a 16th-century coaching inn, the hotel’s interiors have been inspired by the river that runs parallel and local traditions and craftsmanship have been sensitively incorporated into the redesign. The windows frame the view of the Thames, with bold stripes representing traditional rowing club blazers running throughout its rich wool carpets. The hotel features 40 individually designed rooms, with some named after notable guests to have visited the site including King Charles I and Princess Grace of Monaco.

Boasting four different food and beverage concepts, The Relais Henley is home to The Clipper Restaurant offering all-day dining in a sophisticated setting; The Clip Bar; The Deli and The Quarterdeck Bar, an intimate bolthole tucked into the oldest part of the hotel with the patina of a traditional English pub.

The Glow Medispa located close to the hotel in the town of Henley-on-Thames allows guests to unwind and rejuvenate through a variety of relaxing treatments, available to book in-room at the hotel as well. From the hotel, guests can enjoy a cruise on the River Thames, horse riding within the nearby Chilterns and a round of

golf on some of Oxfordshire’s leading courses.

The Relais Henley re-opened in 2021 showcasing the owners’ shared passion for luxury and community to deliver the best hospitality experience to their guests. Grace Leo, co-owner and managing director says: “I’m so excited that The Relais Henley, our flagship property of Relais Retreats, has joined Pride of Britain Hotels. Christmas

Laura Bowler married Hugh Saunders on 4th December 2021 at Notley Abbey in Aylesbury.
LAST

Laura and Hugh met in the spring of 2016 near their places of work and, after running into each other a few times, he asked her on a date. “I liked her sense of humour (and sense of mischief) and thought that I’d better ask her out or I’d regret it,” he tells us. “I have always loved her confidence, her willingness to get involved in anything and the fact that she laughs at my jokes. She’s gorgeous too, of course!”

The couple became engaged during a holiday in Northern Ireland. Hugh says, “I had intended to propose in May 2020 while on holiday in St Lucia, but the pandemic meant that we couldn’t go. We were able to take a trip to Northern Ireland in September 2020 and since I wasn’t sure when we might be able to get to St Lucia, I still wanted to propose so I thought I had better seize my chance! I asked Laura to marry me in the Culloden Hotel overlooking Belfast Lough, which was more romantic than it sounds!” Laura adds, “The proposal was a complete surpriseparticularly as the waiter had accidentally been calling me Mrs Saunders all evening and it had become a running joke between Hugh and myself. That being said, overlooking Belfast Lough with a fire burning in the background, the setting was very romantic.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple chose Notley Abbey in Aylesbury as the backdrop for their Christmas-themed wedding. “It offered the perfect combination of a country house (which is what we had both been looking for) and a fascinating history,” Hugh explains. “It was in a good location for our guests and the ability to have our immediate family stay on-site was a bonus as we were all able to enjoy breakfast the following morning together!”

Laura adds, “We were looking for a venue that would be intimate but not claustrophobic and, importantly, had plenty of room to dance! Having previously looked at venues where the band or DJ would be in a separate room, we quickly realised that we wanted one that could allow people to be part of the after-dinner entertainment without necessarily needing to hit the dancefloor. Also, the proximity of Notley Abbey to local hotels for friends and extended family to stay made the planning a lot easier.”

The couple named their table after reindeer which set the festive theme. “We chose to have a bit of fun with the table names and our top table was called Rudolph, Laura says. “We used the same design as our wedding invitations for the table plan and continued the blue and silver colour theme. Our centrepieces looked stunning, they were candelabras with Christmas wreaths placed at the bottom. Each guest had to turn their place name over to establish who got to take the wreath home. These were chosen at random and symbolised by a blue star.” Laura and Hugh chose charity pins that donated money to Great Ormond Street and Cancer Research as their favours. These are charities that we support, so it was nice to be able to include these as part of our special day,” they tell us.

The couple chose a mixture of white, pale pink, peach and deep-red flowers with touches of dark blue. “The foliage reflected the seasonal theme because it was a mixture of fir, holly and ivy with touches of thistle, berries, pine cones and cinnamon,” Laura explains. “The dark roses added a pop of colour to the blue and silver theme and hinted at Christmas, and each napkin was tied with holly berries and twine.” Their statement cake showcased a snowy mountain scene with a couple on a ski lift reflecting their shared interest

in skiing. They also had Christmas trees draped in fairylights decorating their venue and mistletoe. “The fires were lit which looked so romantic and each fireplace was decorated with a garland that matched my bouquet,” Laura says. “Instead of being just floral, there was an emphasis on spices including cinnamon sticks, pine cones and dried oranges which, against the heat of the fire created a wonderful smell inside.”

SETTING THE SCENE

Laura chose a Ronald Joyce dress called Cassandra (style number 69419). She tells us, “Having tried on a variety of styles that didn’t suit me, I knew that this was the gown for me. I loved the beading around the straps, the sparkling layers and the lace detailing (I didn’t want a full lace dress). I had it altered to include more boning in the bodice for added structure. I also chose a veil by Ronald Joyce and my Manolo Blahnik shoes were lace and in a similar shade to my dress.”

Hugh wore a royal blue three-piece mohair suit that was tailor-made by Jamie Roxburgh at Norton & Townsend. He tells us, “Under the suit collar, I had a quote embroidered from The Tempest by Shakespeare which read: ‘I would not wish any companion in the world but you, nor can imagination form a shape, besides yourself, to like of.’ I teamed my suit with a white shirt from Turnbull & Asser and a red silk tie from Hermes. My shoes were stylish brown Edgware brogues from Crockett & Jones.”

The best man and usher wore three-piece suits that matched Hugh’s. “They had different silk linings for their suits and waistcoats, and wore purple ties,” Hugh explains. Laura adds, “Our bridesmaid looked glamorous in a blue dress in keeping with the theme teamed with a pair of stunning Jimmy Choo shoes!”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Laura and Hugh created a slideshow of photographs of each of their guests over the years and played this on a screen located in the main reception room. “It brought back many memories and stories that we hadn’t heard before!” they tell us. “We also had a popcorn machine so that people could help themselves and a sweetie cart.”

Laura’s parents had arranged a few surprises that the couple didn’t know about which had been organised with the team at Notley Abbey. “There was a magician who was brilliant both during the drinks reception and at the start of the meal,” Laura says. “My parents had also organised for the singing waiters which was a total surprise. They assisted with the service and, before dessert was served, they broke into song! This got everyone up and dancing, including my grandparents, and got the party started! During the evening reception, Laura and Hugh hired a band that kept everyone dancing into the early hours of the morning with a mixture of live music and DJ sets.

33 REAL WEDDINGS
The ‘reveal’ was amazing and Laura looked so beautiful. I’m not ashamed to say that I shed a little tear! I loved having our photos before the ceremony, but the ceremony itself was what stays with me the most. For much of it, I felt like there was just Laura, myself and our registrar present.”

“Because we were getting married in winter, we knew that we wouldn’t be able to take all the photographs after the ceremony which was at 2.30 pm because the sun was due to set around 4 pm. As a result, we decided that we would have a ‘reveal’ on the picturesque staircase of Notley Abbey and take our couple photographs there ahead of the ceremony. It was a really special moment between Hugh and myself which I do not think we would have had otherwise. It gave us a chance to see each other and capture some really special photos.” - Laura

“A big thank you to our photographer, Suzy who made everybody feel at ease and forget that there was a camera present.” - Laura

AT FIRST swipe Love

Caroline and Rob’s special day at De Vere Latimer Estate in Buckinghamshire enjoyed a blush pink and cream theme with hints of green Images courtesy of Absolute Photo UK

Caroline and Rob first met six years ago on an online dating app and their first date was in London where they met up for a drink and enjoyed a walk by Tower Bridge. “Rob proposed to me on the 17th of October 2020 on top of Mam Tor, one of the highest points in the Peak District,” Caroline tells us. “We have been to the Peak District many times together before including our first time away together six years ago, so it’s a very special

place to us. After a three-hour hike, Rob asked me to take a picture of myself looking into the distance and as I turned back around, he was on one knee which was such a surprise! He was so nervous that I had to remind him to put the ring on my finger!” Here, the couple tells us about their special day at De Vere Latimer Estate in Buckinghamshire which was decorated with a pretty blush pink and cream theme with a hint of green.

37 REAL WEDDINGS
Caroline and Robert (Rob) McCabe married on the 19th of June 2022 at De Vere Latimer Estate Buckinghamshire.

De Vere Latimer Estate was the first and only venue that we viewed. We visited it after we discovered the pictures on their website and both fell in love with the place.

The stylish ceremony room is decorated with panelling and chandeliers which made it feel elegant and classy. We placed lanterns down the aisle for a romantic ambience and the ceremony room already featured beautiful décor so it didn’t need a huge amount of decoration.

During the ceremony, I accidentally said Rob’s middle name during our vows instead of his first name, which also happens to be his dad’s name!

The manor house and the stunning scenery across the Chess Valley are beautiful.

The ceremony, when we became husband and wife, was a memorable moment for us both.

For our favours, we had heart-shaped mints in small, personalised tins decorated with pink flowers.

“I felt excited on the morning of our wedding and the nerves only kicked in when it was time to walk down the aisle - that was the moment it felt real.” – Caroline

Our table plan, table names and place names were designed by a company that works regularly with our venue. We chose the blush pink, floral-printed design.

Our venue provided the catering which tasted delicious. Everyone enjoyed the canapés served during the drinks reception and we chose roast chicken for our main course and a profiterole tower for dessert.

For our centrepieces, we chose flowers that matched the bridesmaids’ bouquets of blush pink and cream varieties with a hint of greenery.

The rest of our flowers followed a soft romantic theme with hints of green showcased through the eucalyptus.

My mum and I visited a few wedding dress shops to find the one. I knew that I wanted an elegant fitted gown with a long train and a low back so I finally chose a beautiful dress called Marianna from Blue by Enzoani.

I kept my accessories simple by wearing a pair of drop earrings to not take away the focus from the dress.

39 REAL WEDDINGS
We chose a simple, elegant white cake covered in icing and decorated with silk flowers matching the colour scheme.

I also wore a cathedral-length plain veil to finish the look.

The groomsmen wore the same three-piece suits as Rob teamed with dusky pink ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses.

Our bridesmaids wore pretty blush pink multi-way, floor-length dresses.

We hired a live band called Railroad Kin for our evening reception who was one of the best suppliers that we chose. One of the members of the band also played the saxophone which was a huge hit with our guests because he performed on the dancefloor getting everyone into the spirit of things. Watching everyone singing and dancing together was a wonderful moment that we’ll never forget.

Hannah and Alfie’s summer celebration took place on the outdoor terrace and inside the sumptuous function suite at the newly opened Hotel La Tour Images courtesy of

Hannah and Alfie met while working at Pizza Hut. “We both noticed a connection between us from day one,” Hannah tells us. “We spent the first night after meeting messaging each other until 4 am! He kept asking me to go out with him but I was nervous and pulled out of our first date. He carried on asking me and I finally decided to go which is when we discovered that there was something special between us.”

They became engaged during a trip to New York in December 2019. “Alfie proposed in Central Park, outside Belvedere Castle the day before my 22nd birthday which was a wonderful surprise,” Hannah says. “I had always maintained that he could propose when I turned 22 so he was one day early! The best thing about the location was being able to walk straight into Tiffany & Co. afterwards to get the ring resized in one day rather than having to wait!”

33 REAL WEDDINGS
Hannah and Alfie Shrewsbury married on 14th May 2022 at St Lauds Church in Sherington followed by a reception at Hotel La Tour in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

SETTING THE SCENE

Hannah and Alfie decided to get married in the church located in the village where Hannah grew up. “My parents and aunt and uncle were married there and my cousins were christened there so there was a strong family connection to it,” she tells us. “Hotel La Tour was being built while we were planning our wedding. We had already booked another venue which closed down due to the pandemic so we looked online and found Hotel La Tour and both fell in love with it. We signed the contract and paid the deposit while it was still being built and crossed our fingers that it would be open in time for the big day. We drove past most days and watched it transform from a 14-storey cement block into the beautiful venue that it is today.”

The couple decided on a pretty blush pink and navy colour theme. “We chose white and blush pink flowers that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses,” Hannah explains. “Our table plan was decorated with light pink and blush-coloured flowers that looked perfect for our spring wedding date. Belvedere Castle, the backdrop for our engagement in NYC, was the natural choice of name for our top table and our place names were created in the same colours and design as the table plan, invitations and table names.” The couple also had miniature perfumes and aftershaves as favours gifted in white bags with Lindor chocolates on the tables.

Hannah and Alfie wanted a relaxed vibe on their day so decided on a barbecue for their wedding breakfast with a pizza buffet during the evening. “We chose this because we met whilst working in a pizza restaurant,” they tell us.

LOOKING THE PART

Alfie’s grandma, Karen made Hannah’s dress. “It was beautiful and so comfortable, I felt like a princess,” Hannah says. “The detail on the dress was created using a necklace that belonged to Alfie’s great nan –it was an honour to have a family heirloom included and I wore my nan’s veil that she had on her wedding day 51 years ago. I finished my look with a Swarovski necklace that my mum bought for me that coordinated perfectly with my dress. I also wore a pair of stylish kitten heels and changed to flat shoes during the evening so that I could dance easier!”

Alfie and the groomsmen all wore identical navy suits teamed with blush ties made from the same material as the bridesmaids’ dresses which were long blush gowns with floral detail on the waist. “Our flowergirl had a cute dress with a white top and a blush skirt decorated with flowers,” Hannah says. “All of these dresses were also made by Alfie’s grandma with some help from his sister which added a personal touch.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Hannah and Alfie hired a DJ, a photo booth and a chocolate fountain to entertain their guests. “Our DJ was brilliant, he kept the party going all evening,” the couple tells us. “Our guests loved the photo booth and we loved looking back at the pictures and messages written in our guest book. The chocolate fountain provided a selection of our favourite sweets including giant foamy bananas that Alfie loved as a child - he remembered taking a tub of them home from his mum’s wedding and he got to take some home from his own wedding, too!”

“I felt a little overwhelmed but so happy. It was amazing to marry my best friend. I loved Alfie’s speech, his words were so touching, he did an amazing job!” — Hannah

We’re an engaged couple living in Oxfordshire where we both work full-time so there isn’t much time left for wedding planning. We’re thinking of marrying in Europe and hiring a planner to arrange our special day for us from here. How does the process work?

Meet the expert: Sofia Gallo is the talent behind Weddings and Events by Sofia. She has been planning weddings for more than 20 years, first in Italy and then since moving to the UK in 2012. She specialises in European destination weddings in Italy and France.

Sofia says: In recent years, there has been an increase in destination weddings with 2022 proving to be popular for Italy, with the Amalfi Coast topping the list. France, Greece, and Spain are other popular hot spots. Here are my five top tips when starting to plan your wedding abroad:

• Take the questionnaire on the www.gov.ouk website by searching ‘marriage abroad’ - it’s a great starting point to understand the minimum requirements because not all European countries allow for civil ceremonies so this tool will guide you through the first steps and even recommend

approved translators.

• Consider at least 18-12 months of planning time when wanting to marry abroad. The requirements may change from town to town and bureaucracy can play a big part.

• Be aware of the hidden costs. If you’re looking for a legal ceremony, there may be some requirements that will inevitably cost you, such as document translations by a recognised translator or CNI (Certificate of No Impediment) to be requested at the local registry office. You may also need to stay at the chosen location for several days before the wedding.

• Have a budget in mind alongside the services you may need. This will help you stick to it and have a clear vision of what you would like on your wedding day.

• Look for a wedding planner who can assist you with all of the above taking some of the wedmin off of you and providing you with a budget tool that will help you make your choices wiser.

59 EXPERT ADVICE

I want to plan a fun hen party which is a bit different to the norm. I live in Oxfordshire – any ideas?

Meet the expert: Kerry Moores works at The Henley Distillery.

Kerry says: At Henley Distillery, we’re excited about offering our facilities to the wedding market. Our gin experience room contains 12 mini stills which can be used as one per person for a private event, perfect for a hen gathering or if guests were happy to share, we could host up to 24 people. For private events, we can tailor all of our experiences to suit the partywhether that be due to budget constraints or timings.

Our Signature Gin Experience lasts for around three hours and invites guests to fully immerse themselves in the gin-making process. Following a tour of the distillery and brief history of gin, guests venture across the courtyard, G&T in hand to the Gin Experience room for a tasting session. After this, our head distiller guides the group through developing their own bespoke recipe by choosing from more than 100 botanicals, eventually distilling and going home with a personal bottle of gin which they have created themselves.

For couples wanting something a bit different, they could plan a visit to design their own wedding gin which would then be produced by us, to be served at the wedding as well as given as gifts and wedding favours (miniatures available). We can help to design and print bespoke gin

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

We’re planning our wedding flowers for our spring 2023 wedding and need some inspiration – can you help?

Meet the expert: Lynn Lines is the owner of Love Flower Studio based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire.

Lynn says: Whilst pinks, lilacs and soft shades are still popular, bright pops of colour such as orange, red and yellow are making a comeback for celebrations in 2023. This is alongside dried, pressed and preserved flowers.

We’re all feeling the purse strings tightening with the current economic situation so our biggest tips for keeping costs down are:

• Keep it as green as possible! Add more foliage to your bouquets and arrangements which will make them cheaper and also more eco-friendly.

• We all love a pop of colour from blooms! Researching what flowers are in season at the time of year that you’re getting married will also keep your costs down.

• Repurpose your designs using your bridesmaids’ bouquets to add more decoration to your venue, for example on the cake table or at the bar - the opportunities are endless.

ELLIE SANDERSON OPENS NEW FLAGSHIP BRIDAL BOUTIQUE IN OXFORDSHIRE

Established bridal boutique owner Ellie Sanderson, who already owns a luxury boutique in Buckinghamshire and one in Oxfordshire, has opened the doors to her new flagship shop at Gate Farm Barns in Kiddington, Oxfordshire, the ultimate visit for a first-class bridal dress shopping experience.

Ellie’s third property has been two years in the making. She tells us, “It has been my ambition for some time to sell my beautiful dresses in a wonderful, organic and rural setting. Stepping away from the issues and stresses of the high street and working in a space that is simply magic.”

Combining retail with experience, it’s a destination, a place of calm, fun and celebration. Ellie continues, “Finding the right building was the hardest thing because barns can be dark. I viewed so many but this one stole my heart on my first visit.”

After the pandemic, the stars aligned in March this year, the Barn came back onto the market and the sunlight that flooded the studio, and the view of spring lambs in the fields beyond sealed the deal for Ellie. “There’s dedicated parking for my brides and a simply wonderful courtyard. Picking the right people to help me bring this vision to life took some time and started with my choice of interior designer. I only wanted to work with artisan craftsmen, I wanted the beautiful pieces of furniture and fixings to be created by hand with love. I wanted every single brushstroke of paint to be applied with precision and care. I honestly wanted the whole building to be steeped in a feeling of love and utter joy. My interior designer was my first-ever Saturday girl, she was studying at that time and has gone on to become one of London’s most talked about new stars in her field. We set our vision and from day

BEST OF BRITISH

We speak to from Vicky Angell, founder and owner of Love & loved Bridal Boutique based in Swanbourne, Buckinghamshire about how to have a stylish but sustainable wedding. She tells us, “With the consumer growing more conscious of their environmental impact, many couples are seeking a more ethical wedding and looking for hints and tips on how to make their day more sustainable. The wedding industry creates an enormous amount of waste but, with pioneers leading the way in the bridal industry, it is possible to have an amazing day without leaving a heavy footprint in your wake.”

Vicky continues, “The best place to start is to think about what’s important to you as a couple and which parts of your day are nonnegotiable. What are your options, are there sustainable solutions already out there? You might have to do your research. I would suggest you start by looking locally. It’s often small start-up suppliers that are creating niche solutions to growing consumer problems. Shopping local has the benefit of supporting your local businesses and economy while reducing your carbon footprint if you’re cutting down on extended transportation time.”

Vicky stresses how it’s important to be realistic. “You might not achieve your mission on every element of your day, but the fact that this is an issue central to your day means you’re already doing your bit. I recommend speaking to suppliers about their sustainability policy and what they’re doing to reduce their impact on the environment. Its always important for a wedding couple to be compatible with their suppliers so make sure you work with people who share your passion for making a difference.”

Vicky suggests considering hiring, borrowing and passing on items. “This is especially achievable with the decor you choose to style your day,” she says. “If you work with a stylist, they will have items that they

one have agreed on pretty much everything - it was meant to be!

Ellie’s choices have been as environmentally friendly as possible. She explains, “I didn’t want to buy factorymade pieces of furniture that were cheap and replicated. Instead we worked with the wonderful Gideon Botha who has handmade most of our furniture, oiled each and every single piece by hand and fitted it perfectly into our space.”

Ellie continues, “Our jewellery trays are handmade terrazzo pieces created by the wonderful Mariana of Bruta. She sourced the colour and poured into the last from pigments chosen in Marrakesh - they are simply gorgeous and natural. Our fabrics are natural linens, delicate velvets and modern Boucle which blend perfectly with our natural organic feel.”

The dresses are a wonderful collection which has been hand-picked to arrive in time for the new space. “We have the same philosophy with dresses in that we don’t sell mass-produced products but instead focus on the provenance of the labels we sell,” Ellie tells us. “Knowing each designer personally and understanding their business philosophy to ensure it matches ours. We work with labels that are diverse, cool and modern and inclusive with their sizing structure. We travel the globe to find these labels, they are all hugely special to us.”

loan to you that will be collected and repurposed for another wedding or occasion. There are also some great companies that hire decor that reflects current trends, again look for companies who are local to you. Confetti doesn’t have to be a no no, there are great biodegradable options available. Consider having your invitations, place names and favours made with seeded plantable paper. Not only do they look great, they provide a sustainable and sentimental solution as your guests can enjoy nurturing new life as a lasting memory of your day.”

When it comes to the bridal outfit, Vicky says to consider investing in a pre-loved wedding dress or find a bridal boutique who is working with British designers or ones that are are innovative in ethical and sustainable luxury bridal fashion. “Many British designers are sourcing their fabrics from the UK, cutting down the impact of international shipping,” she says. “They cut each piece to minimise waste and often donate any waste fabric to local schools and colleges where they are reused for training purposes or to create new pieces. Vegan, cruelty-free and sustainable fabrics are growing in availability. Sanyukta Shrestha is a designer to consider, many of her fabrics derive from hemp and bamboo that are highly sustainable materials with natural properties that make your dress extremely comfortable to wear, and they look great too.”

Bridal designers with sustainability high on their agenda are making an effort to slow down fast fashion, whether that’s creating one collection a year which reduces the cycle of sample dresses and encourages brides to appreciate a well-designed piece whose style is enduring and versatile to suit changing trends.

Finally, Vicky says to consider separates as each piece can be adapted to be worn again. “A bridal top can look great styled with a pair of jeans and consider dying the pieces to rewear at another occasion,” she says. “Having a sustainable and ethical wedding is possible without making compromises.”

For him

We catch up with Alexander Edwards, managing director of The Cotswold Tailor based in Woodstock, Oxfordshire about current wedding menswear trends for your groom-to-be and his male bridal party. He tells us, “This winter promises to be just as eventful and busy as the summer was. Our shop is buzzing with the excitement of newly engaged couples finalising their arrangements for their special day. As always with this time of year, we see a lot of the light-coloured, pastel shades of waistcoats and ties replaced with more autumnal colours. Burgundy patterned ties are always incredibly popular, as are navy, and an emerging trend seems to be burnt orange. All of the above pair really nicely with tweed three-piece suits. The slightly more textured looking tweeds, such as Harris tweed, not only look wintery but they are super-practical, providing warmth to their wearer which is perfect for those frosty December days.”

Another shift that Alex and the team are seeing this season is the change in footwear. “Boots are rarely worn for summer weddings but

are hugely popular for winter ones. Brown and dark-tan continues to be the colour of choice with our 2022 winter grooms, with the darkened toe and coloured laces also being very popular. It’s important to note, trousers fall very differently over a boot so make sure you opt for the right length of trouser depending on your choice of footwear.”

One exciting development is the return in popularity of the morning suit. Alex tells us, “We’re hiring out more morning suits this year than ever before. This traditional garment can’t hesitate to turn heads and suits particularly the slightly more formal venues such as the stately homes.”

Alex continues, “Just because these classic suits have been around for decades, morning suits don’t have to be shapeless and old fashioned. In fact, there are many companies out there such as ours that have taken these classic garments and given them a contemporary twist. Our morning suits have tailored fitted trousers, flat fronts instead of the usual pleated trousers and a nice waisted silhouette offering the wearer a very flattering silhouette.”

Walking in a winter wonderland

Want to plan a seasonal wedding but unsure where to start? We’ve put together a guide to help you create the ultimate celebration

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME

One of the first things you should do is decide on a colour palette. This time of year has some wonderful hues available, including greens, reds, golds, blues and silvers. Choose one or two and stick to them. If you try and include every colour, it may look overwhelming and messy. If you want to go against tradition, an up-and-coming trend that we’ve seen here at County Wedding Magazines HQ is jewel tones. These can add warmth to your venue and can be incorporated into your glassware, candles and cutlery.

DECIDING ON A VENUE

Picking a venue can be overwhelming, especially if you have a restrictive criteria. Look through social media and magazines to get some inspiration, and once you have an idea of how many people you want to attend and the area you want to get married in, you can begin narrowing down your search. The weather, as we all know, can be pretty unpredictable, so if you’re going for an outdoor ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan in case it rains or snows.

FINDING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

If you’re tying the knot in the middle of winter, chances are it’s going to be pretty cold. Take this into consideration when choosing your dress, as you might start to feel chilly in a sleeveless gown. Those of you thinking of wearing a suit, choose warm fabrics and colours that will tie in with your theme.

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Accessories are your best friend when it comes to winter weddings. Do you desperately want a strapless gown but don’t want to freeze? Opt for a cover-up or bolero to keep you warm. These will tie in nicely with your theme and look super cute in those all-important photographs.

68

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES WARM

If you’re worried your guests might feel the chill, supply blankets and slippers. A firepit is another way of keeping everyone toasty while also adding a fun element to your day. If you want to take it to the next level, supply some marshmallows – yum!

MUST-HAVE FLOWERS

Whether you opt for an arch, grand centrepieces, an oversized bouquet or a hanging masterpiece, your flowers will create a statement in your photographs. There are a range of wintry blooms to choose from, including roses, ranunculus, berries and much more. With a strong emphasis on eco-friendly weddings, ask your florist if their flowers are grown in the UK and if they use eco-products where possible.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE

If you’re big fans of Christmas like us here at CWM, why not lean into the time of year and incorporate aspects of it into your winter theme? You could add a Christmas tree in your reception room, have festive-coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, use reindeers as table names, give your guests baubles as favours or even ask Santa to come and visit the little ones.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Food is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, so it’s important to pick something that fits your theme and personalities. With the cold weather outside, think of warming dishes such as soup or a roast dinner. You could serve mulled wine on arrival and create a fun hot chocolate station for the evening.

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

AN EYE FOR ROMANCE

Founded by MUA Karla Powell, Karla Cosmetics creates handmade, on trend, colour-shifting eyeshadows and has recently launched its Romance Quad Palette – get ready to fall in love! Two years in the making, this innovative palette combines velvety-soft matte eyeshadows with the brand’s best-selling multichrome opal shades seen in pressed formula for the first time.

Inspired by all things romance and love, these shadows evoke passion with complementary warm pinks, cherry-hues and deep burgundies taking you all the way from fun and flirty to sultry siren. Meanwhile, the formula means the product glides on with ease, and the ultrapigmented rich tones give minimum fall out and maximum impact. £69, www.karlastore.co.uk

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. The texture offers lightweight full coverage that blends in so well it’s virtually undetectable, and the smart doubleended format features a fine tip for precise application with a foam tip for blending. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. It conceals without drying out the skin, and with continued use can even benefit the complexion since alpha-bisabolol of natural origin is soothing. SHEER PERFECTION

Meet the expert: Melissa Clare is a professional make-up artist covering weddings in Berkshire and surrounding counties. She specialises in natural flawless make-up and romantic, effortless-looking hairstyles.

I’m planning my early-spring wedding and need some make-up ideas using seasonal shades. I have blonde hair and brown eyes so can you help?

Melissa says: As a make-up artist, I see spring as a really exciting time to get married. With the sun starting to shine for longer and the flowers blooming, I would reflect this in the bridal colour palette. I would recommend using a choice of fresh and natural tones alongside a pop of

LET’S TALK ABOUT PERIODS

Meet the expert: Lucy Self is the founder of Save My Knickers, an award-winning blood stain remover product.

Help! I’m due my period on our wedding day. Any tips?

Lucy says: The last thing you want to worry about on your wedding day is your period, especially if you have chosen some light-coloured bridal lingerie, wedding night pyjamas and of course, your wedding dress. Save My Knickers is on hand to keep you and your special wedding day garments safe! It’s a multi-award-winning blood stain remover that successfully works on everything from knickers to bedsheets. Save My Knickers is proud to be plastic-free, cruelty-free and vegan. One tube saves around 20 pairs of knickers and adds no more than 60 seconds to your normal laundry routine. Here are some other top tips for not letting your period spoil your special day:

colour, typically pink or peach on the lips that work well with blonde hair. For brides with brown eyes, I would suggest using a tone that will enhance the shade of brown that you have. If your iris has flecks of green, try using olive browns and taupes, if you have hints of honey then try sandy beige tones or sparkly gold shades. For dark brown eyes, try defining the lashes with a coffee-brown shade of eyeliner.

Keep your skin looking rosy and fresh by using a liquid highlighter mixed into your usual foundation to give it a little special something.

 Track your period; if you keep a track of your monthly cycle then you’ll be more likely to predict when your period is due, which will help you to feel more prepared.

 Stock up; if it’s looking like your period will fall on the day you’re due to say I do, you can be prepared by having a stock of your favourite period products, and maybe even a spare pair of knickers, at the ready (this is where your bridesmaids come in handy!) Your other female wedding guests might also thank you if you have a stock of period products in the toilets.

 Be prepared; if you’re not as regular as clockwork and are worried about any surprise periods, you could always start the day with your favourite products in place. Wearing a pad or moon cup just in case will help keep your mind at ease so you can focus on enjoying your wedding.

SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection.

Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

94

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.

Pure luxury

After hearing about The Belfry Hotel & Resort, an award-winning hotel in the heart of Sutton Coldfield with three world-class golf courses, 300+ bedrooms, multiple restaurants and a luxurious spa, I was excited to experience it first-hand.

The host of The Ryder Cup four times, more than any other venue in the world, The Belfry Hotel & Resort has gone down in history as the backdrop to some extremely notable golf moments and has hosted its fair share of famous names and faces. Less than 10 miles from Birmingham Airport, International Train Station, Alexander Stadium and Birmingham’s NEC, it’s surrounded by prominent local landmarks, and is in a prime position for any travelling guests who need a place to lay their heads.

A ROYAL WELCOME

Walking through the double doors, I was met with a stunning entrance adorned with rich fabrics and beautiful floral displays. Walking past the generous amount of guest seating, the white portico pillars and vibrant yellow neon sign for the Brabazon Bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the quirky chandelier that was taking centre stage.

The very helpful Ryan, who was working at the check-in desk, detailed exactly where we needed to go to find our room. As we walked through

the wood-claded corridors lined with busy event and conference suites, we found the lift up to the second floor in search of the Presidential Suite. The largest and most impressive of all their overnight accommodation, the suite offers a family-sized living room complete with comfortable sofas, a dining table, a mini-kitchen space with all the comforts of home, and two separate balconies with views of the world-class golf courses.

The bedroom had luxurious plush armchairs, a desk, a luscious kingsized bed, and quite possibly the biggest en-suite bathroom I’ve ever seen! Equipped with his and hers wash basins, a free-standing bath, a spacious shower cubicle, and two separate toilets, it’s safe to say you won’t be waiting for your turn to use the bathroom.

REST AND RELAXATION

Picking up our swim bags, we headed to the spa to try out the Fire & Ice Experience. Here, Michelle gave us a guided tour through the varied selection of 12 bio thermal rooms, all designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses. Knowing that this spa had been named a finalist in the Best Day Spa category for the Good Spa Guide Awards 2022, I was excited for the experience to begin. Starting with a foot spa and moving through the hot and cold steam, sauna, and shower rooms,

96
Beth Morton and her hubby visited The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield

we experienced both the shock and delight that came with such extreme temperatures – it was divine! Our personal favourites were the Igloo Room, which offers chilled walls and an ever-filling ice bucket for a body massage, and the Aroma and Crystal Steam Rooms, both heavenlyscented spaces designed to cleanse and purify.

From here, we popped down to the iconic Brabazon Bar, which was crowned winner of the Hotel Bar of the Year category at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022, for a cheeky cocktail (or three) and found ourselves transported back in time. The bar, rich in bottle green leathers with portico pillars, showcases a breathtaking raised glass ceiling that is a sight to behold.

READY, SET, PLAY!

After hearing numerous tales of woe from my husband about how he’s always the worst player on his group golfing trips, we both jumped at the chance of hitting a few golf balls at the driving range.

Despite the brilliant Toptracer technology allowing us to see our flight paths and providing data to work on our swing technique, it’s safe to say that we won’t be challenging Tiger Woods to a match any time soon!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort offers an impressive selection of restaurants, each a little different from the other, and we were lucky enough to dine in the fabulous Ryder Grill. The buffet here is one of the most deliciouslooking and gourmet-sounding selections I’d ever seen, but since my hubby is lactose-intolerant and vegetarian, we decided to choose from the à la carte menu.

Having made our selections, we were treated to a stunning salmon, beetroot, and wasabi starter adorned with edible flowers and a vibrant carpaccio of tomatoes. The main course, generous in size, was a seared sea trout with garlic potatoes and a very artistic fennel bhaji. The highlight of the meal was the extra dessert that our wonderful waitress Annie brought out when she realised we were struggling to decide. We scoffed a chocolate torte, a cheese selection and a sticky toffee banana bread – yum!

Our night ended on a high after we made our way back to our Presidential Suite and fell into blissful slumbers in a bed that felt lighter than air.

We had a wonderful time at The Belfry Hotel & Resort and are looking forward to coming back soon!
