Crowning glory

Whatwith last month’s incredible coronation and the launch of Netflix’s Queen Charlotte, I’m reeling from all things royal at the moment, and feeling very proud indeed to be British! Whether you’re royalists yourselves, or merely found your May all the merrier being blessed with an extra bank holiday, there’s been something to celebrate. I always think of our readers as queens and kings, princess and princes, and believe you all deserve the royal treatment on your big day, so why not consider adding a regal edge to your nuptials?

Jewel-toned colour palettes are certainly seeing a surge in popularity, thanks to their opulent, rich hues; and shades such as purple and red have long been associated with royalty. When it comes to dining, think banqueting tables bedecked in gold cutlery and crystal, with tall candelabra and centrepieces. Of course, add this styling to a stately home wedding venue and you’re there!

EDITORIAL

Deputy Managing Editor

Kelly Andrews | 01376 535 611 kelly.andrews@county.wedding

When it comes to your attire, what could be more royal than a ballgown? Pair a full, extravagant skirt with a dramatic train and veil, and you’ll have guests gasping as you make your grand entrance. If you like this idea, but fear the volume will impede you on the dancefloor, opt for a detachable skirt, allowing you to transform your look into a sleek silhouette for the evening. Finally, your very own crown is a must-have for this theme, whether it’s a flower version for a Queen Titania twist or a bejewelled tiara. There’s plenty of fashion inspiration this issue from our local bridal boutique A-Z of dress shopping feature from page 59 to our regular dedicated section from page 65.

As we now enter the summer well and truly ready for some sunshine, don’t miss our host of styled shoots and real weddings this issue, all waiting to inspire as you plan for your big day.

Enjoy and keeeep planning!

EARLY SUCCESS STORY

Somerset-based event planning and styling business Scarlett

Rose Events was one of the final three businesses vying for the title of Start-up of the Year at the Somerset Business Awards 2023 recently.

Founded by Georgina Fisher in April 2021, Scarlett

Rose Events was established following 15 years experience gained in the events industry in the UK and Australia. Georgina says, “Starting a business during the pandemic could have been seen as a risky move, but I saw the potential for events to blossom in a new era. I seized the opportunity to bring a fresh perspective to the event scene of rural Somerset, embracing the beautiful scenery to create unique celebrations.

“I’m incredibly humbled that the success of my businesses resulted in being recognised as a finalist at the Somerset Business Awards, and am looking forward to growing my team and client portfolio over the next year.”

A particular focus for Georgina now is to collaborate with the strong supplier network in the region. She already shares a creative studio with wedding florist Wilde Green at Martock Workspace. Owner and florist Emma Benson says, “Georgi and I work closely together to help clients realise their dream events, ensuring floral designs tie in seamlessly with table and décor schemes.”

This experience is being developed in partnership with other organisations in the city such as universities, local museums and other institutions across Bath and beyond.

Tom Boden, National Trust General Manager for the Bath portfolio says, “This is a pivotal moment in the history of the Bath Assembly Rooms and an exciting time for the Trust. We’ll uncover stories of this world heritage landmark and make plans to share the stories of the future. Working closely with friends and partners, we’ll develop the immersive experience to bring the social scene of Georgian Bath to life and create new ways for everyone to experience coming together in this unique building.”

ARNOS VALE

0117 971 9117 | www.arnosvale.org.uk/weddings

Right in the heart of Bristol, Arnos Vale is the ideal location if you’re looking for something a little bit different. You have the opportunity to mix and match three characterful locations for your ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening revelries.

Nestled among the trees you’ll find woodland wedding venue, the Underwood Centre. Its large oak beams and rustic tin roof complement the surroundings beautifully. Fairylights hang from the canopy to provide a twinkle to your ceremony and wooden benches offer informal seating for your guests. After the “I dos,” make your way to the rustic drinks shed for a celebratory glass of bubbly followed by toasting marshmallows around the firepit.

For an informal feast, think afternoon tea, picnic hampers, sharing platters, barbecue or hog roast. Picnic benches can also be ordered to provide extra seating for your drinks reception or woodland dining. Here, the venue can accommodate up to 80 guests (60 seated and a further 20 standing). Furry friends are also welcome!

The Spielman Centre, designed by Charles Underwood in 1839 is a Victorian building, constructed using the finest materials of its day, The attached Atrium cafe brings a modern twist and an extra space for you

to utilise during the evening celebrations. Make a grand entrance as you ascend the stone steps, through the large wooden doors into the elegant interior where 90 loved ones await with magnificent leaded windows allowing natural light to flood the room. Meanwhile, the natural décor offers a blank canvas for you to create the day of your dreams. Here, you can indulge in a hearty buffet, afternoon tea or informal sharing feast. But if you prefer a more formal dining arrangement there’s space for a sitdown meal for up to 70 nearest and dearest. A band or DJ fits perfectly in the Spielman Centre, which can host 140 for your evening reception. Finally, the Anglican Chapel, complete with original Victorian features is the centrepiece of the venue collection. Ornate floor tiles guide you into the vast space with elegant curved windows and marble wall plaques offering a classic yet stylish atmosphere. Following the vows, make your way outside for a drinks reception while the venue team transform the space for your wedding breakfast. Choose from preferred caterers for delicious seasonal menus. The Anglican Chapel is licensed for up to 100 guests and can accommodate the same for your wedding breakfast. You can also combine it with the Underwood Centre or Spielman Centre for your evening reception to create a bespoke wedding day.

BERWICK LODGE

0117 450 7605 | www.berwicklodge.co.uk

The interior of Berwick Lodge has everything you’d expect from a lodge: open fires, wood panelling and original stone fireplaces. However, it also features a subtle Turkish twist. Sumptuous, over-sized sofas and crystal chandeliers bring a luxurious feel to the place, while allowing it to retain a relaxed and welcoming ambience. A sweeping staircase leads to 14 beautiful bedrooms, all individually designed and named after ancient civilizations of the Anatolian period.

Set in 18 acres of glorious gardens and woodland, Berwick boasts views reaching across to Wales. Features such as a walkway to Aphrodite’s Dome, ornate fountains, a peaceful orchard and a summer house make it a wonderful backdrop for those all-important photos.

The venue caters for any type of wedding from the intimate elopement for two, to grand exclusive parties for 150. Mesopotamia is a light room in the converted stable block, the Mews. It can host civil ceremonies for up to 100 guests. This ground-floor space is home to sparkling

chandeliers, pillars to decorate and large 180-degree windows offering views of the woodland and open countryside beyond.

Summeria is the smaller upstairs room in the eves of the Mews, holding up to 30 nearest and dearest for the “I dos.” Its skylights offer countryside views and the stained-glass window door is a real feature.

For those with a larger guest list looking to wed in the great outdoors, the venue offers three scenic locations among the gardens – Aphrodite’s Dome, The Fountain and The Archway.

The dining room, Hattusa, can host wedding breakfasts for up to 100 guests and up to 150 for an evening do. It’s bright and airy thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens. Characterful features include an old London bar, original fireplace and an ornate pulpit ideal for speeches. The original wooden flooring makes for the perfect dancefloor and the cosy lounge was made for enjoying the quieter moments.

LEIGH COURT 01275 373 393 | www.leighcourt.co.uk

The Leigh Court Estate has a rich history as a religious sanctuary, a family home, and hospital and has been conquered by, gifted to and used as a safe haven by Kings for thousands of years. Shielded from the hustle and bustle of the city by Leigh Woods, the beautiful Leigh Court was designed by architect Thomas Hopper in 1814. You may recognise it more recently from various TV productions including Poldark and Bridgerton. The design of this graceful Grade II listed mansion combines elegant Palladian architecture with opulent Greek revival interiors and lavish 19th-century décor. The first room you’ll see at Leigh Court is the light and airy Outer Hall, which has an unusual domed ceiling encircled by eight marble pillars.

You can choose to hold your ceremony in any of the five tastefully decorated rooms, depending on the size and style of your wedding, or in a marquee on the extensive lawns. All of the stunning ground-floor rooms are licensed for wedding ceremonies. The fairytale staircase, 40 skylights

and working pipe organ in the Great Hall (120 ceremony guests) makes it a popular choice, but the blush-coloured Morning Room (65 ceremony guests) and exquisite golden Tapestry Room (65 ceremony guests) are also favoured by couples looking for an intimate location. Meanwhile, the Library and Salon (65 ceremony guests) are perfect if you’re hoping for a ceremony room that opens directly onto the lawns.

When it comes to receptions, you’re spoilt for choice, as they can be hosted in one or all of the ground-floor rooms including the Tapestry Room (56 seated dining guests), the Library (109 seated dining guests), the Salon (56 seated dining guests), the Outer Hall, the Morning Room (56 seated dining guests), and the bar and lounge. When the weather is too good to stay indoors, guests can spill out onto the lawns directly from the Library and Salon. The venue also has a stretch tent located on the lawn, which you’re welcome to use. Overall, Leigh Court can hold up to 400 for the evening reception if you choose to hire a marquee.

and Alex met on the daily commute, as her office at the time was just down the road from his apartment. Being punctual people and following the same morning routine, they crossed paths quite a few times. One particular day, Alex decided to stop Eleanor on the pavement, much to her delight. “It’s fair to say it was an utter movie moment,” she shares.

Alex proposed in an idyllic spot in Santorini. He’d been carrying the ring around Greece for a while by this point tackling security and hiding it in his bag away from Eleanor. After dinner he lead her down to a beautiful church terrace, asked her to sit down and got down on one knee. It was a huge surprise to Eleanor, which you may not believe if you’d seen her outfit that evening! “I opted for a long white dress that screamed: ‘Make me a bride!’ But yes, a surprise it was, and the absolute best,” she remembers.

The vibe and aesthetic of Homewood Hotel & Spa in Bath matched the couple’s vision for their big day, and a huge plus for them were the rooms on site. So, they decided to make the most of it, hosting an al fresco soiree there the evening prior for close family, friends and guests who’d travelled internationally. Celebrations extended beyond the wedding day too, with the chance to enjoy a delicious breakfast with loved ones.

Read on as Eleanor tells us more about their wonderful wedding, which took place on 22nd July, 2022...

SETTING THE SCENE

Since Alex is half Greek, it was important to Eleanor to reflect this part of his heritage in the day’s celebrations. For wedding favours, the couple chose Greek Koufeta, in keeping with the sugared almond tradition, in gold to complement the palette. They were beautifully presented in handmade white bags, tied with a ribbon.

During the reception guests sat around nine round tables, with the bridal party at a long top table. The plan was presented on a gold-framed mirror with removable acrylic, meaning they could use it again at home post wedding.

The spectacular centrepieces took the form of towering gold candelabras holding an explosion of white flowers. Eleanor explains, “I felt this fitted Homewood’s stunning chandelier room beautifully, which was important to me as I wanted the detailing to come together cohesively.” The flowers were stunningly executed by Laura at Cotswold Blooms – a glorious array of white florals accentuated with sprinklings of gold and tumbling leaves.

The place names were written in elegant script in keeping with the order of service and invitations. A gold seal was included next to each guest’s name and delicately placed with their white linen. The tables were named after wine bottle sizes – Magnum, Methuselah, Nebuchadnezzar, and Salmanazar, alongside Roederer Cristol for the top table. “I asked my talented graphic designer uncle to do a drawing of Alex and I, which we used on our table names,” Eleanor shares.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The bride’s vision for the big-day bake was for it to include French touches, to honour the other part of Alex’s heritage. Such elements included a traditional croquembouche and a peppering of macarons. She also wanted to tie in the lace detail from her dress and Alex’s tie. “The Cake Architect

Eleanor

brought my wishes to life and the taste was divine. We’d opted for salted caramel and mixed berry tiers,” the bride tells us. Eleanor’s father was in the army and worked closely with the Gurkhas, so they opted to use his Gurkha Kukri knife to cut the cake. She continues, “I must also mention our tiered cheese and pork pie cake for the savoury palettes among our guests. This was another showstopper and went down a treat.”

The venue team provided a mouthwatering spread, from confit duck and pork belly, to sea bream. “They were incredibly kind in accommodating our request for tarte flambée for the evening spread, allowing us to bring a slice of Strasbourg to the table, where Alex grew up,” Eleanor says.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride wore the Masazir mermaid crepe dress with a sweetheart neckline from Pronovias’ Eden Collection. “I’d always imagined myself wearing this style, but the detachable Juliette-style sleeves were a huge surprise! They made the dress for me and I didn’t remove them the entire day,” Eleanor says. She completed the look with a cathedral-length veil by Pronovias and crystal encrusted Lottie Blue heels by Freya Rose, painted by a friend with a personal design on the soles.

Alex wore a blue three-piece suit paired with a white shirt and black shoes. His suit was brighter than his groomsmen’s, who also wore light pink lace-patterned ties labelled inside with the couple’s names and wedding date.

The bridesmaids were dressed in elegant floor-length gowns in champagne. Each had a draped back, cowl neckline and extended train. “They looked utterly stunning,” Eleanor remembers. “I’d asked each of them which style they preferred as ultimately, I wanted them to feel sexy

and comfortable on the day, and it just so happened that they all chose the same.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The pair booked a string quartet to perform during the ceremony and reception, who were thoroughly enjoyed by the guests. “I felt they added another level of elegance to the day,” Eleanor shares.

During the evening, DJ Oliver Fatemi played a series of hits and had the dancefloor buzzing until the early hours.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Eleanor and Alex’s wedding day was one of only two stormy days during an incredibly hot and dry summer, so they swiftly decided on plan B, and held their ceremony indoors. “The thunder and rain were actually magnificently romantic and dramatic, and cleared up just in time for the reception and outdoor photographs,” Eleanor remembers. “We felt incredibly happy and lucky to have our loved ones all in one room. It really is something rather remarkable when you look back at all the faces staring up at you and see your cousin, next to your godfather, next to your childhood friend.”

WORDS OF WISDOM

The bride shares her top planning tips: “I highly recommend focusing heavily on the larger elements of the wedding in the lead up, just as much as the smaller things, and relax on the day with the understanding that your wedding venue and team have got everything under control. Working in PR, I like to run the show, but on the day I was fairly Zen knowing they had it all in hand!”

Kim and Andy chose the rustic vibe they’d always dreamed of for their August wedding day

Images courtesy of Zara Rowlands Photography

Kim and Andy met in primary school, at the age of four.

“Apparently I tried to kiss him under a table in our classroom, so I obviously made an impression,” Kim says. They’d spent their childhood years as great friends, and by adulthood, love had blossomed.

Andy proposed in Marbella. He took Kim to a restaurant overlooking the sea and popped the question just as the

sun set.

As a carpenter, the exposed beams in the barn at Wick Farm caught Andy’s eye when they visited for the first time. “We absolutely loved the venue, it’s just so beautiful, and I always wanted a rustic style wedding,” Kim continues. 29 REAL
WEDDINGS

Our photographer, Zara, and videographer, Kien, really saved the day! A matter of weeks beforehand, we found out via social media that the ones we’d booked had gone bankrupt. Zara and Kien both got in touch after seeing a post I’d made on a group looking for a replacement and managed to meet us before booking to put our minds at ease.

30
I wore a Christina Wu dress, which I chose because the train was the biggest I’d ever seen! And it was this that I fell in love with first. I accessorised with a cathedral-length veil with tiny pearls scattered on it.

I also added a belt for a little bit of sparkle, as well as a handmade necklace that hung down my back. As the dress was backless it really finished off the look.

My bridesmaids wore dusky mauve backless dresses.

Andy wore a blue Marc Darcy suit with a grey waistcoat and navy tie. His groomsmen were dressed to match, except for their buttonholes.

I’m very fortunate to have an amazing mum who handcrafted all of our decorative touches.

31 REAL WEDDINGS

Our photo booth looked like an old-fashioned camera, which really suited the venue. We also hired a DJ for the evening and obviously a sweet cart because you’re never too old for sweets!

I wanted a simple-looking cake that fitted with the venue, so I opted for a four-tier semi-naked bake adorned with flowers to match my bouquet. The topper read: 'It was always you.'

I knew Zara was the perfect photographer for us and her work is absolutely breathtaking. I had the most beautiful pictures, better than I could have imagined, and a stunning wedding film to remember the day.

The day passed too quickly. I know everyone says that, but it really did. We remember feeling so happy and I actually felt beautiful.

Lucie and Tom tied the knot at Berwick Lodge in April 2022

Images courtesy of Venetia Norrington Photography

Lucie and Tom met as teenagers while working in B&Q at the weekends. Tom was in the year above Lucie at school, so while they were aware of each other, they’d never formally met. The pair embarked on a relationship the following year, but both still had plenty of growing up to do and parted two years later. Happily, the world of academia brought them together again though, when they bumped into each other at their university’s freshers week. One short year later the relationship was back on and they’ve been together ever since.

Tom proposed to Lucie while taking a road trip around Canada in an RV. The couple share a mutual love for the stars, so it was simply perfect when Tom got down on one knee on a clear night by a lake beneath the heavens. This is the romantic version, Lucie has the true story... “Every night of the trip had been cloudy, and it wasn’t until the last evening in Banff we had clear skies. However, we arrived at our RV site only to be told not to go out after dark due to a cougar sighting! After dinner and a couple of games of UNO, Tom decided to drive the RV down to a beautiful lake to look at the stars but when he stepped out after nightfall, I point blank refused to follow for fear of getting ripped apart by said cougar! So, I stood in the doorway waiting for him to come back and after several moments he returned to make a wonderful speech about love, and got down on one knee to propose. My response to which was: ‘Are you joking?’”

Berwick Lodge was exactly what the couple were looking for in a venue: beautiful, bright, and airy with extensive grounds. “We were looking for somewhere we could go back and visit again and again, somewhere we could make our own, and most importantly a venue that was dog friendly to ensure we could incorporate our fur baby into the day,” Lucie explains.

Join us as the bride gives us the lowdown on W-day, 15th April, 2022...

MY
35 REAL WEDDINGS

Due to postponements and changes in friends, we had someone be our something blue. As I’d already committed to dresses and make-up, I couldn’t add another bridesmaid, so this seemed like the perfect way to make her a special part of the day. She came for photos in the morning, opened gifts and drank fizz with the bridesmaids. She also did a reading during the ceremony.

I absolutely adored our ceremony, which I felt we’d made personal to us. We wrote our own vows and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room! We also had three amazing readings from people in our bridal party.

Tom knew he wanted to wear a navy suit, and his was a very smart fit. He stood out from his groomsmen with a slightly larger buttonhole. We asked the groomsmen to provide their own navy suits. They didn’t all match, but it wasn’t obvious.

I knew I wasn’t going to enjoy wedding dress shopping, so I didn’t plan the usual experience. Instead, I looked online, popped out during my lunch break and bought one. I did panic after that though, and took my sister back later to try on mine, plus two others. That was all I needed to do to know it was the one. There were a few alterations I had in mind, which developed over time, so I took it to a seamstress and created something that was truly mine.

I wasn’t too fussy about the style or colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses. However, after going shopping with my maid-of-honour, I decided on the one colour, allowing my maids to choose their style.

36
The flowers featured subtle pastel blues, pinks and whites with plenty of greenery and a wild look. I love proteas, so I had one to sit at the centre of my bouquet.

We had plenty of garden games between the ceremony and food and left them out for the evening, as it had been such a lovely sunny day.

The best part of our day was having our fur baby, Albie, attend. He was chaperoned by the wonderful Lynn from Waggs ‘n’ Woofs and arrived after the ceremony. He was a huge hit and our guests were queuing up to have a photo taken with him in front of our pom pom backdrop.

Our favours were seed packets as we love our garden, and wanted something people would be able to take home and use. I also entered a Bloom Gin competition during lockdown and won some miniature gin bottle favours.

Our tables were named after places we’d visited together, so I painted a large board with an outline of a world map and pinned on the seating plan.

Each table had the guests’ names, plus two photos of us together at the relevant place. I made white clay hearts as the place names, which the guests could also take home.

Our cake was iced with crisp edges and was designed to suit our colour palette.

37 REAL WEDDINGS

We had lots of handmade signs dotted throughout the venue, along with wooden crates holding candles and family photos. We also had a memory candle and a large board with photos of us throughout the years.

We had a quick game of Mr & Mrs after the meal while the team were changing the room over for the evening. This was managed by our bridesmaids, who made cards for guests to fill out and they then sifted through to find the best questions.

We had a DJ in the evening, who went down a storm. We had no requests on the day as we knew we didn’t want a load of cheesy tunes, but guests were able to request a song when they sent their RSVPs

I bought Tom a dance lesson for his birthday, as I didn’t want to just shuffle awkwardly around the dancefloor. We enjoyed it so much we had a few more and pulled off a little choreographed routine, which we’d kept secret. It was a huge hit.

We went on the trip of a lifetime for our honeymoon! After not being able to go away for so long, we went all out. We were away for four weeks travelling to Singapore, New Zealand and Thailand. New Zealand really was breathtaking and we didn’t want to leave. A highlight was taking a helicopter up to the top of Mount Cook and landing on the glacier.

It’s your day, so you should plan a wedding that you want. Make it personal and don’t let others talk you into anything different! Only invite the people you want there, not because you think you have to or because someone says you should. If you don’t want to invite great auntie Jean twice removed, don’t!

The inspiration behind this local lovely was a timeless, English garden, complete with simple white and ivory blooms and plenty of foliage. “It was important to keep everything understand yet elegant,” says shoot coordinator Cynthia Hoyi. From the bride’s dress and delicate bouquet, to the cake and table settings, every element works in perfect harmony.

The idea behind the project was to inspire couples who not only want the romantic and ethereal feel that naturally comes with an English garden theme, but also wish to look back at their wedding in years to come and feel that their big day is every bit as stylish as it was at the time. Timeless itself, Berwick Lodge offered the perfect backdrop, which was captured beautifully by Timi Oshin and Isobel Buxton.

DISCO DIVA

This team of suppliers worked together to blend a bit of retro and punk into this modern urban space

Images courtesy of Freya Steele Photography

Inspired by her love of roller skating and colour, Somerset-based wedding photographer Freya Steele decided to get a fabulous bunch of suppliers together to create an urban-edged shoot. “I’m crazy for a pop of colour in a photo shoot,” she says. This trendy roller disco wedding features an alternative painted jacket, rock ‘n’ roll banner, plus striking dried flowers and headpiece. The quirky styling is bursting with vibrancy from the vinyl place mats, vibrant pink and orange streamers, and retro love heart stationery. And who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle, brought to us here through the make-up? Rounded out with a gorgeous dress, outstanding suit, impressive cake, epic moving photo booth, bright backdrops and the most kind-hearted celebrant, what more could we wish for in a summer spectacular? Freya finishes, “The team brought the perfect amount of creativeness for eccentric, individual couples looking for wedspiration with a colourful, outside-the-box vibe.”

REGENCY

“Deep, rich tones, such as blues, lilacs and greens offer an instant Regency feel. The Bridgerton style is full, opulent, dramatic and romantic, so consider bold floral displays and beautiful details, such as coloured candles, bespoke calligraphy stationery, and details inspired by the period.”

– Holly Allman-Lopez, Ambience Venue Styling, www.ambiencevenuestyling.com

ECO-CHIC

A sustainable wedding is less to do with the look and more to do with the ethos behind it. But that doesn’t mean it can’t look as stunning as it is kind. Think about switching core elements to eco-friendly alternatives. Use dried or locally-grown flowers, hire props rather than buying, use recycled and recyclable or plantable stationery, and style it all out with handmade, upcycled elements from local suppliers such as bunting, nontoxic candles and biodegradable confetti.

MAXIMALIST

The maximalist style, or as we like to think of it, go big or go home, is a celebration of flamboyance, opulence and excess. Throw in a bit of everything, have fun and go for it!

This year more than any other we can think of, the wedding industry has fallen head over heels for the Pantone Colour of the Year. With jewel tones already proving popular, offering a boost to the more traditional pastels, it wasn’t too much of a stretch. Pair Viva Magenta with blush for the ultimate modern yet timeless treat.

RUST

“Rust and terracotta shades are popular at the moment, and work beautifully in barn and tipi-style venues where couples are looking for something a little more relaxed and rustic. It looks great paired with plenty of fresh foliage, green, copper and grey tones. Or why not add a splash of contrasting purple to really make it pop?”

– Vickie Elliot, Sage and Belle, https://sageandbelle.co.uk

“Rich, warm rust tones are more versatile than you might think. Featured in chair drapes, napkins or within floral displays, these hues give a warming feel perfect for autumnal nuptials bathed in candlelight. However, we’re also seeing them used to accent lighter summer designs. Used in small quantities set against a light base colour, rust and terracotta tones really pop and offer an edgy, contemporary look. Introducing terracotta pots, rust coloured tea lights and even flowers such as toffee roses, painted latte carnations or dried varieties, is a great way to achieve this look while keeping a light and bright overall feel.” – Holly Allman-Lopez, Ambience Venue Styling, www.ambiencevenuestyling.com

FESTIVAL

A festival vibe is the ultimate expression of you. All bets are off and fusty old traditions are thrown out of the window. Consider hosting your celebrations in the great outdoors à la your favourite summer music festivals, and look for tipis or sailcloth tents for cover. Style with as much vibrant colour as possible and bags of fresh features such as streamers, bunting, disco balls, hay bales, barrels, wooden signage and festoon lighting.

A VERY ROYAL

celebration

Feel like kings and queens on your big day with this regal shoot Images courtesy of Eden Photographics

Having witnessed some of the biggest royal events in living memory over the last couple of years, this team of local lovelies felt inspired to create their own tribute. At the time they started planning, back in March 2022, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th Jubilee was at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts, so shoot coordinator and hair stylist Elizabeth Jarrett had in mind a 1940s and 1950s vibe with a regal twist as a tribute to Her Majesty’s incredible achievement. “There wasn’t a lot of money around to spend on weddings in the post-war years so I asked our suppliers to be sustainable and bring a beautiful, simple yet elegant and not too elaborate approach,” Elizabeth explains.

The heartbreaking news of Her Majesty’s passing came in the intervening months, and the images were actually shot the day before the state funeral. Moving apace into 2023, we’ve experienced the incredible pomp and circumstance of King Charles III’s coronation, so now the country is back in party mode and in hindsight, the second model reflects that as well as the joy of a wedding. “We’re also celebrating the fact that when it comes to wedding planning, the possibilities are endless,” Elizabeth says. “We love working in an ever-changing wedding industry here in Somerset.”

GREEN FINGERS

Imogen Stuckes, founder of sustainable wedding florist Flowers by Imogen (www.flowersbyimogen.com) says: Sourcing your wedding flowers locally can be a brilliant way to be more sustainable on your big day. Ask your florist if they could possibly buy blooms from local flower farms, or at least be British grown. Ninety per cent of flowers in the UK are imported, flown over from as far afield as South America, and who knows if they’re ethically grown, so it’s always best to go local. At Flowers by Imogen, I use all British Flowers, including many we’ve grown in our very own cutting garden in Somerset.

If you wanted to look into sourcing the flowers yourself, you can usually pick up buckets from your local flower farm. Look on www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk to find your nearest one. They usually grow artisanal blooms, which will make your wedding flowers bespoke and special. They’re also often grown organically, using sustainable methods; plus you’d be supporting a local, small-scale business.

It’s also a good idea to check that your florist uses sustainable mechanics, and works foam-free. Floral foam is a method of keeping flowers fresh, but it’s made from toxic chemicals including formaldehyde.

REUSE AND RECYLE

HOT TOPIC: SUSTAINABILITY

This issue we asked our experts to tell us how to plan a wedding sustainably

GOING LOCAL

Jo Cranston from Queen & Whippet (www.queenandwhippet.com) says:

My advice is to make sustainability a part of your conversation with potential caterers from your first contact and don’t be shy to ask specific questions. Those, like us, with a strong sustainability policy will be able to tell you how they’ll reduce the environmental impact of your wedding food. Ensure that they’ll be using local produce and that their menus take seasonality into account. Consider a higher proportion of plant-based dishes and ask how any meat or fish is sourced. Salmon is a traditional wedding menu ingredient, but you won’t find it on any of our menus due to sustainability issues. Trout is even more versatile and delicious, and is certified with the MSC blue tick. A good question to ask is how many of your caterer’s dishes are made from scratch. We don’t buy in anything pre-made, so we have much more control over using local ingredients. Ask your caterer’s advice on creating a waste strategy for your event and find out how they’ll take responsibility for the food waste. What can be reused, recycled or composted? At Queen & Whippet we minimise food waste by creating dishes from what might otherwise be discarded, such as our fish skin crackling canapés. Also, bear in mind that no modern caterer should be using disposable plastic serviceware, so if you’re having a buffet or evening food, ask about their compostable or reusable options.

Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding’s editor, Kelly Andrews, says: A good tip when it comes to planning a sustainable wedding day is to keep everything as local as possible. This cuts down on your wedding’s carbon footprint given suppliers have fewer miles to travel.

There are plenty of areas of your big day that you might not dream could have an eco-friendly angle, but even suppliers such as photographers can do their bit. Do your research and look for one that uses renewable energy sources, recyclable and recycled paper for their prints and eco-friendly inks.

The biggest decision you can make is to choose a sustainable venue. Many will rightly boast their credentials on their websites, with a section devoted to their ethos, aims and actions. Check out www.berwicklodge.co.uk and www.royalcrescent.co.uk to name just a couple. Also, cut down on waste by gifting your guests edible wedding favours, something useable such as a natural soap bar, or even make a charitable donation on their behalves. Avoid trinkets that will most likely find their way to the bin when the big day is over. Finally, the best tip I can offer is always to hire, not buy. Even scouring charity shops for décor items leads to waste if you’re not going to reuse or resell. There are ample wedding prop hire companies and venue stylists across our wonderful region who have warehouses full of beautiful items ready and waiting to make your big day stunning, sustainably. So, get exploring!

The ultimate A-Z guide to wedding-dress shopping

IS FOR ALTERATIONS

“With most designers taking six months to make and deliver their gowns, you also need to factor in time for alterations once it arrives. After all, it’s not something you want to rush!” says director of Bath’s Krystle Brides (www. krystlebrides.co.uk) Krystle Worgan. So don’t dilly dally! Once you’ve ordered your dream dress you’ll need to start looking for a seamstress. Even though you’ve ordered your size, chances are it’ll still need a little tweak as gowns fit everyone differently.

CIS FOR CATWALK

BIS FOR BODY BEAUTIFUL

A Rock that frock

Everyone, without exception, deserves to feel beautiful on their wedding day. We all have concerns out about our bodies, but remember there’ll be something stunning out there just for you. Dress for your gorgeous shape making sure you're confident and comfortable, and you can’t go wrong. Now recognising the true average dress size in the UK, more boutiques are holding a much wider range of sample sizes. Check out www. izzistocktonbridal.co.uk, which has gowns from size 8 to 30 in store. Also, look out for designers such as Romantica of Devon and True Bride.

Our top tip for newly-engaged couples is to hit the wedding shows asap. It’s the best way to meet suppliers and assemble your W-day team. While you’re there, be sure to experience a catwalk show. It’ll help you find inspiration from silhouettes, to fabrics and designers; as well as guiding you towards a boutique you might want to make an appointment with.

DIS FOR DIARY

Cathy Keen, owner of 14 & Sixpence (www.14andsixpence.co.uk) in Illminster says, “Around one year before the big day (eight to 12 months minimum), book a couple of appointments at local boutiques. You may want to research a little first, so look into silhouettes you’re drawn to and the look you want to achieve before saving some images to your phone to take with you. You’ll know when you’re getting close to finding the one, and we have a couple of questions to ask to make sure!”

Krystle says, “When you book an appointment with us, you’ll have your own private fitting room for an hour-and-a-half, a bridal stylist to guide and assist you, as well as enough seating for three guests to join you. Our priority is that you feel completely comfortable during your appointment, so we’ll ask you about your venue, your style preferences, and your budget so that we can work with you to find the one. You don’t need to bring anything along with you, although we do recommend that you wear nude underwear.”

EIS FOR ENTOURAGE

“Take a couple of valued people with you to your appointment, those you can’t picture making such an important decision without,” Cathy recommends. “No more than three or four though or you’ll be overwhelmed with too many opinions!”

Sarah Hackett from Rookery Bridal (www.rookerybridal.co.uk) is in agreement: "While it's tempting to bring lots of people, bear in mind that you'll have to be able to deal with their initial reactions. This can be uplifting, but it can equally be the opposite. Having a trusted, smaller group will mean you can seek their input and advice more calmly and develop a deeper understanding of what you're looking for. Be prepared to stand up for what you want. It's all too easy to become influenced by others and you need to feel your choice is the one for you."

FIS FOR FABRIC

The fabric you opt for will largely be governed by the style you’ve fallen in love with. Gorgeous floaty chiffon and tulle are delicate, lightweight materials often found in soft, effortless, boho-chic gowns – ideal for summer nuptials. Sparkle tulles in particular have been experiencing a heyday. Meanwhile, classic satin with a modern twist too is very much en vogue when it comes to beautifully to structured shapes and clean lines.

GIS FOR GOWNS

There are so many silhouettes and styles to choose from, so start by having a look in your own wardrobe to see what vibe you usually veer towards for a special occasion or what you know feels comfortable on your body. If you’re not used to something fitted, your wedding day might not be the time to try – so avoid the fit and flares and look at the A-lines. Likewise, think about your overall vision. For example, a boho rustic event cries out for something relaxed, soft, non-structured and flowing.

JIS FOR JEWELLERY

It’s generally recommended to shop for accessories after you’ve decided on your attire as it’s easier to make the jewellery work with the dress rather than the other way around. The right piece can elevate your look or solve any niggles you may have. Your choice can depend on your neckline, hairstyle and detail on your dress.

HIS FOR HAPPY TEARS

Fear not, when you find the one all is not necessarily as we see it on TV with much arm flapping and tears. If you’re not the emotional sort, it’s unlikely you’ll suddenly start while you’re dress shopping, and that’s completely fine. Sometimes, it will simply be a case of weighing up your options and feeling satisfied with your decision. As long as you feel comfortable in that, there’s no reason to doubt it, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

IIS FOR IVORY

Here comes the bride, all dressed in white... or is she? While Queen Victoria made it popular for the bride to wear white, having done so on her own wedding day, commitment to this tradition has by and large been relegated to the annals of history. “Many designers are now offering their dresses in different colours to help emphasise their designs,” Sarah says. “Essense of Australia have a range of hues available from almond to biscotti and rum, and more. Lillian West use sublte shades such as sand and pink champagne, which I'd recommend to any bride. There are even black options available of you really want a different look.”

LIS FOR LACE

KIS FOR KICK UP YOUR HEELS

Once you’ve ordered your gown, it’s time to give your footwear some serious thought. You’ll need to have your shoes in the bag by the time your alterations appointment comes round as it’s important to make sure the seamstress knows the exact length the dress needs to be.

Make sure you’re comfortable. If you live and die in trainers, there’re some gorgeous bridal options out there. Alternatively, many brides choose to make their shoes their wedding-day treat to themselves and spend months saving for the ultimate Jimmy Choos.

MIS FOR MONEY

We adore lace! It has long been used in wedding dresses largely thanks to its luxurious nature, having historically been labour-intensive to produce. Once again Queen Vic is in part responsible for its popularity, sporting handmade lace on her wedding dress. But if you’re now thinking of grandma’s doilies –stop! Modern lace is as varied as it is beautiful. As, Cathy says, “There are so many options and deciding on the ones you love is so personal. You’ll be drawn to laces that fall into a couple of categories...

 Vintage or boho styles are sometimes created using a cotton or knit lace, which are super soft; or feature Chantilly lace, which is a classic on a wedding dress when delicately used as the second layer of a tulle gown.

 Guipure or Venetian lace offers a bolder look, something very elegant that makes a statement.

 For a soft, feminine look, you may just want to add some appliqués with a beautiful scattering of lace pieces throughout.”

It’s easy to get swept up in all the gorgeous gowns on offer, so how to avoid busting the budget and before that, how to settle on one? There’s a general rule of thumb out there on the internet that says you should allocate five to 10 per cent of your overall budget to the dress but it really does depend on what you feel comfortable with and whether this is one of your non-negotiable elements. We recommend that above all you’re realistic about what you want and the rest will fall into place. For example, if you love lots of detailing and heavy beading, an acceptance that this isn’t going to come cheap will stand you in good stead, it’s then up to you whether you want to compromise.

14 & Sixpence

IS FOR NECKLINES

As there are many silhouettes to choose from, there's also a world of necklines, each having its part to play in complementing or accentuating your figure. Head to Google and research sweetheart, plunging, off-the-shoulder, high, halter, one-shoulder, V, illusion, boat, empire, queen, scoop... we could go on!

OIS FOR ORDERING

“We’ve seen an increase in brides leaving it closer to the big day before placing their order,” says Krystle. “While we can accommodate most time frames, offering samples and priority delivery options for quick turnarounds, the more time you have to play with, the better! Shopping at least a year ahead means you can look for the one knowing that all options are available to you.”

Cathy says, “Once you’ve said ‘yes’ to the dress, you’ll likely need a 50 per cent deposit, and ordering takes anything from three to six months. We’re then with you all the way through choosing accessories, alterations, and on to collection with your gown steamed and ready for the big day.”

PIS FOR PRELOVED

If you’d rather invest your cash in other areas of the wedding, but don’t want to compromise on your look, you may want to consider looking at preloved gowns. Kind on the pocket, these dresses will have been worn only once, some not at all, and may be no older than last season. Check out https://bridalreloved.co.uk in Street.

QIS FOR QUICK

Another budget-saving solution, or an idea if you’re short on time, is a sample sale. At the end of the season bridal boutiques will often hold special events where they sell their sample dresses at a reduced cost to give them room in the boutique for the new lines. You’ll be limited on size of course, so be prepared to spend more on alterations. But they’re ready and waiting for you to take away, so no year-in-advance ordering is required.

Sarah says, "While we recommend looking to buy your gown around 10 months in advance as a minimum, dresses can be ordered later in some circumstances. Some designers offer what they call 'rush services' allowing you to have your dream dress in a shorter timescale."

RIS FOR REVIEWS

As you would when researching any supplier for your W-day team, check out your local bridal boutique’s reviews. They’re understandably proud of the kind words their past brides have shared, so many will have a tab on their website you can look through. Alternatively, Facebook is a good place to see what’s hot.

SIS FOR SLEEVES

Sleeves are becoming incredibly popular and offer a multitude of flexible options. Some designs are available with detachable sleeves allowing you to change the look from daytime to evening, in some cases you can even choose the length. Why not chat to your seamstress about adding to a gown that doesn’t already have them if you’re selfconscious about your arms or just love the look?

IS FOR TRENDS

County Wedding Magazines’ fashion editor Claire Ridley tells us what’s hot in the world of wedding fashion right now...

 Plain dresses featuring clean-cut lines with a minimalist aesthetic.

 Lace bodices adorned with beautiful beadwork and voluminous skirts made with layers of organza offering a new take on princess-style dresses.

 Wide, low backlines providing a fresh update to the illusion look, as does the option to include a cape veil.

 The midi-length dress with a soft tulle skirt (à la Carrie Bradshaw) combined with off-the-shoulder sleeves

 Couture details such as structured box pleats with hidden pockets, lace appliqué and floral motifs.

VIS FOR VEIL

Cathy shares, “Your wedding is your one opportunity in life to wear a veil, so consider the option as there are many to choose from: waist, fingertip, cathedral, royal. Then there’s the pattern or design, be it lace, pearls, sparkle or simple.

“You may want to go with tradition and wear the second tier over your face, known as the blusher. A single tier placed discreetly at the back over a low bun is also perfect. My advice is to visit your local bridal boutique with your dress and let them guide you. We offer this service even if you haven’t chosen your dress from us.”

WIS FOR WILD CARD

Our golden rule when it comes to wedding-dress shopping is to go in with a completely open mind, as tunnel vision could lead to a stressful situation if the style you set your heart on just doesn’t work out how you thought. Cathy says, “Make sure you try on enough dress styles and if your bridal consultant suggests a wild card – give it a go!”

Y“YES” TO THE DRESS

How do you know this is the dress for you? We have some ideas...

 You don’t want to take it off.

 You compare every other dress to it.

 You feel beautiful and confident

 You can picture yourself walking down the aisle in it.

 You’ve already started accessorising in your mind.

IS FOR UNIQUE

If you’ve found a gown that’s nearly there, but not quite, discuss options with your consultant. Whether it be a few extra sparkles, lace, appliqué detail, or buttons. They can often work with you to make sure your dress is completely you You could even personalise it by adding a swatch of fabric from a loved one’s wedding dress or go all out and commission a bespoke gown.

XIS FOR X-PERT

Ok, we cheated a bit, but we couldn’t end without extolling the virtues of the amazing local boutique consultants. They have your best interests at heart and really know their stuff. When you arrive for your appointment you’ll have an initial consultation, which will help them to understand you and your vision. We like to think of them as the dress whisperers!

ZIS FOR ZOOM

It’s inevitable your dress will have a little travelling to do – when you collect it and when you take it to the venue, as a minimum. To keep it in tip-top condition invest in a good quality, acid-free garment bag to store it in, and once it’s home keep it away from any harsh light or temperatures. When you’re heading for the venue, lay down the seats of the car and place the dress flat if you can or hang from the garment hook if that fails. Just be sure to hang it up again as soon as you arrive. We’d also highly recommend taking a handheld steamer with you – we speak from experience! Your seamstress will steam it for you once they've worked their magic, but it doesn’t take much for some fabrics to crumple again.

Watch this space

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.

There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big day best with help from the professionals

ALL OF A FLUTTER

I love the look of false lashes, but I’ve never worn them myself. Should I try them for my wedding day? What advice do you have for me?

Gillian says: Aside from flawless skin, the priority of most brides is their eye make-up. The majority want their eyes to pop without looking overly glam. For someone who’s not wanting a heavy make-up look, often they’ll believe a false lash will be too much for them, especially when they’re not used to wearing them. If this sounds like you, my go-to lash is either a three-quarter-length lash or a cluster of individual lashes at the outer corner. With the latter, no strip is being placed across the length of the lash line, so they’re much more comfortable to wear. I can guarantee that when wearing these, you’ll hardly notice they’re there and no one will ever guess they are either. Whether you’d prefer a natural, barely-there look or long and fluffy lashes on your wedding day, these beauties will do the job.

As a bridal make-up artist, I’m a huge fan of a lash application and find that for photos and film, they really enhance my brides’ eyes to make them shine through the lens. My advice is absolutely to be brave and try them out at your trial, and express how you feel with your make-up artist. It’s our job to help you choose the style that’s perfect for you. Try them, wear them in, get used to them. Keep checking yourself out in the mirror – I promise you’ll love it. If you decide against them afterwards, then that’s fine. But, trust me, when you have the complete look together, dress, hair and make-up, the lashes will look right at home.

TRIED AND TESTED

I’m really nervous about having my hair done for my wedding day as I’m normally quite fussy about my look. What can I expect from a trial?

Sam says: It’s completely understandable to feel nervous about how you’ll look on your special day, so a hair trial is the best way to ease any worries. This is your opportunity to work closely with an experienced, professional stylist who’ll take the time to understand your vision and preferences. They’ll ask for a photo of your dress, details and wedding theme, as well as of your usual look to get a sense of your personal style. Just like buying your dress, what you think you want and what you have may be different, so trust our professional judgement.

Importantly, remember that the front and sides of the style is what you’ll be seeing. Inspiration photos are generally taken from the back. Bring pictures where the hair has a similar colour and texture to your own. If you’re wearing accessories or a veil, take these along too, or try out our samples for ideas.

Based on these factors, your stylist will create a couple of different hairstyles for you. They’ll work with you to adjust each look until you’re happy with the final version. You’ll also be able to get an idea of how the style feels and how it holds up throughout the day, as well as having some photos to take away. With a little bit of preparation, and a great hair stylist, you’re sure to look and feel amazing on your big day!

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

HERE COMES THE SUN

Supergoop! has finally made it to Europe. WhenI met with celebrity hairstylist and OGX ambassador, Michael Douglas to mark the launch of OGX’s new Colour Retention range, I can say with confidence that I was definitely having colour retention problems. I’d recently taken the plunge with my dream pastel violet hair colour, but my beloved shade was quickly running away from me. Michael very kindly offered to top my colour up, and while he mixed together a stunning new violet for me, I asked him about OGX’s new range. “All of the brand’s products are PH-balanced with sulphate-free surfactants, which don’t bind to anything you don’t want them to meaning they’re all very gentle on colour,” he told me.

I’m sure we can all agree that there’s not much better than that fresh-from-the-salon feeling, which is why OGX created the new collection, to extend salon or at home colour for up to four weeks. The new products also contain a colour bond plex technology, which helps to protect and strengthen strands for healthylooking, vibrant hair.

With the gorgeous colour applied, Michael began to style my short crop and I was curious whether he had any advice for brides-to-be thinking about colouring their locks pre-

wedding. He said, “It’s so high risk isn’t it? Do not do anything experimental, that’s the main thing! A lot of people seem to want to look like someone else on their wedding day, but I always think it’s better to look like the best, sexiest version of you – make you look great that day!

“Unless you wear your hair up a lot though, I never think it’s such a good idea. Remember, photos are forever. My favourite look was when Jennifer Aniston married Brad Pitt. She had great hair, everyone knew her for her that. So, actually she just had it down with some little diamonds sewn into it on a thin thread, which pinned it really nicely. I’ve tried the technique myself with a thin fishing wire woven through the hair before a blow dry and it just supports the style beautifully.”

Michael continued, “I also like the idea of doing something for the day and changing it up for the evening.” I was totally on board with this, having noticed an increasing trend in brides pulling off an outfit switch-up between the ‘I dos’ and celebrations. Michael suggested: “There‘s something nice about having the hair scraped back for the morning and then something a wavy in the evening or vice versa.”

By now, I was delighted with my own hair and wanted to know more about achieving the same look at home. After all, we can’t all have a celebrity hair stylist on call! He said, “A lot of people want frizz-free shiny hair and ask me on Instagram what shampoo and conditioner they need to buy, but it’s actually down to styling technique. Use a decent bristle brush with a metal barrel, hold the dryer at a particular angle for a long time, about four seconds longer than you think you need to, and keep the brush moving. So, how did you come to work with OGX as it’s brand ambassador? I asked. “During lockdown when all the hairdressers shut down, I decided to go on social media and talk about the best consumer products to use at home. I was getting around 4,000 people a day watching the lives, so a lot of brands got in touch asking me to talk about their products and OGX offered to send me some of its range. When I realised that most of my audience aren’t going to be spending £20 on a bottle of shampoo, yet were the very people asking for help, I agreed to try them. When I saw the huge range of products all PH balanced and with sulphate-free surfactants, at £6.99-£7.99 a bottle, it peaked my interest. I was able to send hundreds of OGX goodies out to my followers, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of people who came back to me saying how much they loved them. We shot 45 one-minute videos for OGX looking at common hair problems with the products to solve them. It’s a great match!”

I left the studio with a spring in my step confirming that indeed, it is difficult to beat the feeling of a fresh new do!

SKIN DEEP

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great

The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.

possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.

Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.

What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?

This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.

I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.

People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?

I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.

We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where

What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.

Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or

“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.

A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.

Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.

What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?

I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.

The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.

It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right

ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.

When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?

It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.

What products couldn’t you live without?

I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON

Professional nutritionists from Wedding Wellness share their stress-beating tips

Feeling the pressure to get everything right and done on time is inevitable when it comes to wedding planning. With a seemingly endless todo list and preparing to expect the unexpected, the sense of overwhelm can quickly take over. This, in turn, results in its own issues such as impaired sleep, digestive issues, skin breakouts, low mood and anxiety. While it isn’t helpful to tell someone planning their big day to simply not stress, thinking about ways to support a stressed body and maintain overall good health, can help prevent some of these unwanted symptoms and make the whole process more manageable.

Read on to discover five ways to support yourself against stress in the run up to your wedding day, courtesy of Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews at Wedding Wellness...

PRIORITISE SLEEP

One of the most underrated activities when it comes to your health is a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep isn’t purely about how many hours of shut-eye you get, but also about being mindful of eating and lifestyle habits, and how they can affect rest. When we consistently sleep well, our brains and bodies are more resilient, making us better at healing, fighting infection, concentrating and making decisions.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the run up to bed time, as both disrupt the brain’s natural restorative activity and block deep sleep, which is key to optimal health.

MAKE TIME FOR MOVEMENT

Exercise is great for physical health but

movement is just as important for our mental health, and ability to handle stress. Our bodies react to stress in the same way they might if encountering a bear in the wilderness! Allowing them the chance to move and release the build up of tension that comes from being in a stressful state, helps them to calm down and return to a state of normal. Movement in any shape or form also encourages deep or mindful breathing, which is another brilliant way of reducing stress and calming the mind and body. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of your movement of choice per day.

EAT FOODS THAT HELP TO LOWER INFLAMMATION

The reason stress is so harmful is that it causes damage to the body known as oxidative stress. This can result in aches and pains, slow healing and a higher chance of catching a cold. Eating foods that help reduce this damage, are commonly referred to as antiinflammatory, as they promote healing and calm the stress response, aiding everything from gut and hormonal health to improving mood. Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods to include in your meals are: berries, ginger, garlic, dark green leafy vegetables, oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado and wholegrains.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS

When you have an endless to-do list, it’s easy to assume every spare moment should be used to work through as much of it as possible. Taking

proper breaks and using that time to actually relax, will calm your otherwise overworked nervous system and help your body return to a rested state. Use those moments to distract yourself with something calming, such as music, conversation or a proper lunch break away from a screen. Not only will this help reduce how stressed you feel, you will digest meals better and feel less fatigued too.

EAT REGULAR, WHOLESOME MEALS

It might sound obvious, but one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat wholesome, balanced meals at a regular time each day. The body loves habit and thrives on routine, so regular meals will help nourish and support a stressed body. Making sure you’re eating foods that include complex carbs will help you maintain energy, support normal body function and improve general health. Look for wholegrains and vegetables; protein like fish, chicken, beans and pulses; and healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving.

I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
92

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.

THE WARDROBE WALLED

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.

The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.

The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire.

The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.

A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.

The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day.

An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!
