It's A Winter Wedding Wonderland

It's the quiet season for everyone in the industry now. After the rush of sunny summer ceremonies, everyone is pausing for breath and catching up on essential tasks. But for couples brave enough to opt for an off season do, you can take advantage of some major perks. Winter weddings can be magical and we have some top tips to make the most of the alternative wedding season.

The Barn at Cott Farm

Get in touch with that venue that really made your heart sing but you thought might be beyond your budget. You might be surprised at some of the off peak packages out there.

Suppliers are snapped up for the summer months but mid winter they're much more likely to be able to fit you in. This is the time to assemble your dream team with way less stress.

Stuck for a theme? Winter has its very own style that will help pull everything together. Add a hint of Christmas with cracker favours, baubles and wreaths. Lean in to the green - the foliage is amazing and ivy is also a thrifty option to boot!

The pandemic put a big pause on everything, but now things are back to normal we're ready for a big refresh of, well, everything!

Take part in our Somerset Ceremonies survey online and help shape the future of our service - and your weddings. We want to know it all: what's important, what's not, what little extras would make your day, right down to the mood and style that would make you feel the happiest. Relaxed and intimate? Grand and formal? Fun and modern? We're listening. Find the survey here: https://bit.ly/3D6ljK6

Like our featured photos? Check out more from the shoot and get some great winter wedding inspiration in our blog. Massive thanks to The Barn At Cott Farm team and their trusty suppliers for sharing them with us.

www.somersetweddingservice.org.uk/blog/

Nothing brings you together like a hearty meal with friends in a cosy dining room, safe from the elements. See what your caterer can rustle up from local seasonal produce.

Mulled wine for welcome drinks or toasts? Hot chocolate station for the little ones...who are we kidding - we all want some!

Embrace the dark - sparklers for the photos, fireworks, or how about glow in the dark garden games? Fairy lights and a big stash of warm blankets will make the most of the outdoors too.

Yes, it’s that magical time of the year once again! I don’t know about you but this year has passed by quickly for me, and luckily it has been a wonderful one. We’ve celebrated my mum and dad’s Golden Wedding Anniversary, we’re looking forward to welcoming our Australian relatives to the UK this Christmas and my brother and sister-in-law are having their first baby this December which is the best present ever! I also managed to take a couple of sun-drenched trips this year, including to Oia in Santorini where I stayed at the fabulous Villa Mellow, booked through The Greek Villas (https://thegreekvillas.com/destinations/santorini-villas/ oia/mellow) and to Athens where I was very spoilt in the rooftop 501 Milos Terrace Suite at boutique hotel xenodocheio Milos (https://xenodocheiomilos.com). Read all about these wonderful properties, perfect for honeymooners in my Greece is the word review on page 84.

To celebrate the festive period, we’ve compiled a seasonal issue for you to enjoy. There’s everything from summery-themed real weddings and elegantly styled shoots for couples planning their nuptials next year to snow-capped venues perfect for winter weddings. Don’t miss the latest news, offers, fashion, beauty and honeymoon destinations plus there are handmade ideas for those planning a DIY wedding, and advice about big-day photography and videography.

For those of you getting married soon then I wish you many congratulations and for those not taking the plunge until 2023, I’ll see you next issue.

Happy Christmas!

One of my favourite European countries is Greece which I’ve been fortunate enough to visit many times. On this trip, I soaked up the warm sunshine in Santorini at Villa Mellow and admired the city views in Athens from the rooftop terrace at hotel xenodocheio Milos. Find out how you can book a dream honeymoon at both properties on page 84.

I’ve always been a fan of actress Sarah Jessica Parker, especially her Manolo Blahnikloving character Carrie Bradshaw so being the fashion editor across the County Wedding brand is my dream job! When I selected the accessories for our fashion section starting on page 64, I added them all to my Christmas wish list, especially this pale pink babydoll trimmed with marabou feathers from https://gildapearl.co.uk

Berry colours are some of my favourite shades so I fell in lust with the finer details in this photo from Ambience Venue Styling. See more of their work on page 55.

Thanks to the local award-winning, Gloucestershire-based Daylesford Organics for the delicious tea samples that they recently sent to me in time for the festive season – it’s easy to see why their products were awarded at the recent Tiptree World Bread Awards with Brook Food. Read all about it on page 55.

Anyone who knows me well will tell you how much I love anything that glitters! So when the images from Etiquette Events’ third birthday celebrations landed in my inbox, photographed by the talented Clem Stevens Photography, I fell in love with the disco balls and neon! Turn to page 55 to see more.

Wow! I love black and white photography so compiling the winter and Christmas-themed photography feature for this issue was so enjoyable! I’m a big fan of the talented Gloucestershire-based photographer Daniella Marinos

THE LAKES BY YOO IN LECHLADE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE OPENS

Nine waterside cabins and 18 apartments debuted this summer on the 850-acre estate at The Lakes by YOO in the Cotswolds, located outside the small town of Lechlade.

The OMNI Wellness Retreats has also launched at the property, during which guests can relax and recharge in beautiful surroundings. Retreats include outdoor activities such as lake sailing, paddle boarding, rock climbing and trapezing, all of which allow guests to be at one with nature.

OMNI will also offer at least two fitness classes per day with expert trainers ranging from Strength & Conditioning to Pilates and Barre, alongside delicious Michelin-starred dining. The Lakes by YOO are also popular for those in pursuit of wild swimming. The freshwater lakes are surprisingly at their warmest in the early autumn when they’ve been heating up all summer. Guests can experience an entirely new way of exploring the outdoors from the water or perfect their dive from the floating jetties.

PAXTON & WHITFIELD CELEBRATE 225 YEARS WITH CHRISTMAS CHEESE VARIETIES

2022 marks Paxton & Whitfield’s 225th birthday and to celebrate, they have launched a collection of Christmas treats.

Dan Bliss, the cheese buyer for Paxton & Whitfield, said: “Our cheeseboard selection for Christmas 2022 celebrates 225 years of Paxton & Whitfield. It features three of the most iconic cheeses from our heritage and two of our most recent innovations that have been developed at our new cheese maturation facility. These cheeses not only help to celebrate and tell our story, but they taste incredible too, either as a collection on the festive cheeseboard or as individual cheeses.”

Still shopping for that perfect festive gift? Paxton & Whitfield has a treat for all budgets in its 2022 Christmas hamper collection. These thoughtful gifts feature the finest artisan cheese, expertly paired with crackers, accompaniments and some with wines, to create collections of luxuriously festive fayre.

Dan Bliss explains: “Our Christmas 2022 gift collections compile the finest cheeses and paired accompaniments for a delicious unwrapping experience. As the company celebrates its 225th birthday, we have given a nod to the past with our Georgian-inspired photography styling and gifts such as our ‘Historic Gourmet Feast Box’ and ‘Cheese for Honey’ collections. We also look forward to the future with items such as a sustainability-focused ‘Planting Trees and Eating Cheese – Edible Christmas Card’ and innovative new artisan elements such as the allnew British Cheese ‘Cullum’ and new hand-baked Paxton & Whitfield Sourdough Crispbreads.”

All of the hampers feature reusable ice packs and 100% sheep’s wool insulation for a chilled delivery and a free Paxton & Whitfield gift card; printed with the customer’s personal message.

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.

The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.

The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire.

The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.

A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.

The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day.

An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!

A sweeping original Georgian staircase sits below ornately carved covings and a full-size French crystal chandelier, leading to a magnificent, grand, light and airy ballroom situated on the first floor with four chandeliers, silk-curtained curtains and full-length sash windows stretching the entire width of the house. The historic basement vault houses a bar, dancefloor area and cinema room.

All of the rooms are licensed for ceremonies with three principal rooms. The Directors Room, located on the ground floor, is a wood-panelled space with a marble fireplace, arched carving, ornate ceiling and antique furniture that’s licensed for 30 seated guests for ceremonies.

The Drawing Room is an elegant pale blue and white suite that can seat up to 40 guests for ceremonies. It’s also located on the ground floor and is home to stunning period features including originally carved ceiling coving, a marble fireplace and exposed original floorboards.

Paris and Elijah met at her sister’s wedding in 2018. “We haven’t gone a day without speaking since,” Paris tells us.

Elijah proposed on his 21st birthday. “After he asked me to marry him, we headed to his home to surprise our families with the news and celebrate - it was a big surprise for everybody!”

The couple chose the elegant Orangery at the wedding venue De Vere Tortworth Court located in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire for their grey and white-themed day. “The orangery was the main attraction to us. It was our dream venue and perfect for our intimate summer wedding,” they tell us. “We had a small wedding with close family and friends

who made it very special for us.” Paris adds, Walking down the aisle in this beautiful venue was surreal for me, something I’ll never forget.”

SETTING THE SCENE

Paris and Elijah’s centrepieces were a combination of flowers that complimented her bridal bouquet. “My bouquet was filled with sweet peas which were perfect because I wanted a soft, delicate flower variety,” Paris tells us. “We got married on one of the hottest days of the year! Trying to prevent the flowers from wilting and the cake from not melting in 32-degree heat was a challenge! Our wedding cake was a seven-tier white design iced with

“We were both so relaxed on our wedding day. The atmosphere was very chilled out which was exactly what we wanted.”

giant flakes and each tier was a different flavour.”

The couple gifted their loved ones personalised iced biscuits as favours which everybody loved, and all of their stationary was designed by Paris’s sister, Chanel. “She was a big help during the entire planning process,” Paris tells us.

LOOKING THE PART

Paris’s dress was by Milla Nova. “My mum picked it out and I instantly loved it, it was the first dress that I tried on and no other styles compared to it,” she tells us. “I accessorised it with a bow for my hair made using the material from my dress. I kept my jewellery simple with my something blue being a Tiffany & Co. silver bracelet with an aquamarine stone and my necklace featured a moonstone gemstone which was a gift from my sister for my wedding.”

Elijah and his best man (his brother, Noah) wore matching light grey checked suits. Paris’s little cousin, Escada and Elijah’s niece, Skyla were the couple’s bridesmaids. “They wore platinum grey floor-length dresses by Dessy. My sister was meant to be my maidof-honour but she was pregnant during the planning process and couldn’t fit into the dress chosen for her by the end of it!”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Paris and Elijah hired a DJ for the evening reception. “I made a Spotify playlist and he made sure he played every song which was fantastic!” Paris tells us.

A winter wedding

Beatrice and Ann chose to have their ceremony at St Peter & St Paul Blockley followed by a reception at Cotswold House Hotel & Spa in Chipping Campden. “I have always wanted to get married in this church because I used to sing in the choir there when I was younger,” Beatrice tells us. Having the choir sing and the organist, Doreen, play at our wedding was like having extended family present. We also knew The Very Reverend Canon Dana Delap well and wanted her to marry us. We giggled throughout the entire ceremony because we were so incredibly happy!”

Beatrice arrived at the church, and she and Andrew left as newlyweds, in a 1952 gold and black Bentley Mark VI. “The driver made us a personalised number plate with our wedding date on it which was special,” Beatrice says.

For the reception, the couple were only able to invite 15 guests due to the covid restrictions in place at the time. “We needed somewhere that had a small and intimate space,” Beatrice explains. The Fig Room at the hotel was perfect being small, intimate and beautiful.

Beatrice and Andrew styled their winter wedding with a red and dark-blue colour theme with hints of pink and white. “We chose red, white and pink flowers teamed with gypsophila and green eucalyptus for our bouquets and centrepieces,” Beatrice tells us. “We had a multi-picture frame as our table plan that displayed some photos from our engagement shoot (that was also taken by our wedding photographer, Jade) and we named the tables after funny Australian places which proved very entertaining listening to everybody trying to pronounce them correctly! I made white heart-shaped Christmas tree decorations as our place names that featured our new married name and date on the back. Our favours were small boxes filled with Australian sweets, a single red rose and a small bottle of hand sanitiser with a label saying spread love, not germs.”

On the menu were a choice of canapés including cray fishtails with

caviar Marie rose sauce, peppered duck breast with apple compote and thinly sliced pork fillet with basil pesto. The starter was smoked duck breast, fennel carpaccio, pickled radishes with truffled brioche snippets while the main course was a rib eye of beef served with sweet potato fondant, creamed spinach and celeriac with a burgundy jus. “We enjoyed raspberry mousse, burnt meringue and macaroons for dessert,” Beatrice says. “I made a classic three-tier cake with my mother. I created a gluten-free lemon and orange drizzle cake as the middle tier and she made the fruit cakes for the top and bottom tiers that all tasted delicious.”

Beatrice chose a dress with detailed embroidery on the bodice which cascaded down the skirt. Donna, the owner of Posy & Pearl Bridal Boutique where she purchased her dress from makes bespoke hair accessories so she was able to design her own piece with her. She tells us, “I decided on a long hair vine with a cluster of pearl flowers and a couple of small pins for each of my bridesmaids which looked so pretty. Donna also gifted me a beautiful blue ribbon garter for my something blue.”

Beatrice teamed her dress with a pearl, white gold and diamond drop pendant necklace and earrings. “I also borrowed a silver and moonstone bracelet from my mother and my father put a silver sixpence in my shoe!”

Andrew chose a stylish blue herringbone check suit teamed with a tan-coloured check waistcoat featuring a burgundy paisley pattern on the back to match the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses and a pair of chestnut-brown brogues. “His suit was a lighter shade of blue than the best man and my father’s so that he stood out but they all wore matching waistcoats,” Beatrice says. Our bridesmaids looking stunning in their burgundy Bardot-style midi dresses which they teamed with a tan faux-fur bolero shawl to keep warm.”

Beatrice Ann Cranke married Andrew Francis Crossley on 23rd December 2020 at St Peter & St Paul Blockley followed by a reception at Cotswold House Hotel & Spa in Chipping Campden.

A spring wedding

Hannah and Simon chose the DoubleTree by Hilton Cheltenham as their venue because it was a hotel that they regularly visited. “The gardens are beautiful and the staff are very friendly,” Hannah tells us. “We had booked a wedding package allowing 80 guests to attend during the day and 100 during the evening but because of the restrictions in place at the time of our wedding, we could only invite 30 guests for the entire day. Everybody needed to wear a face covering apart from myself, Simon and my dad but this didn’t bother us because it was amazing to have my dad and our close family and friends around us.”

The couple kept their table plan simple with everyone seated at two round tables and a long rectangular top table. “My mum made our centrepieces using Whitley Neil gin bottles that she had been collecting especially. She filled them with fairylights and placed them on mirrored plates. She also got silver and navy balloons to place in the middle of the round tables and at the ends of the top table. It looked simple yet beautiful, I really can’t thank her enough for all the help and support she gave us.”

Hannah and Simon purchased scratch card holders personalised with their married name and wedding date which they gave as favours. “My mum sourced some heart-shaped chocolates with navy and sliver detail to fit in with our colour theme,” Hannah tells us. “My flowers also complemented our theme and our red velvet and carrot cake that was made by my 16-year-old sister, Rose, was decorated with fresh flowers.”

The couple’s catering was provided by the talented team at the hotel and included arrival drinks, the wedding breakfast and the evening buffet. The options for dinner were chicken liver pâté, tomato soup or prawn cocktail to start followed by pork belly, sea bass or stuffed chicken as the main course.

Hannah chose a princess-style gown with a sweetheart neckline. “It was so beautiful,” she tells us. “I had visited a couple of wedding dress boutiques but nothing caught my eye as much as this one did from Rosella Wedding Gowns in Cirencester. Simon, his best man, father and Hannah’s dad and stepdad all wore navy three-piece tweed suits and Hannah’s maid-of-honour’s dress was also navy with the couple’s two bridesmaids dressed in pink and grey gowns.

Kayleigh and Tom visited four venues before they viewed Matara. “We met the owner, Geoffrey who showed us around the popular Asian-inspired, exclusive-use venue and its vast gardens,” Kayleigh tells us. “As soon as we arrived, I welled up with tears and just knew that it was the place for us to get married, it was beautiful. Geoffrey has worked hard to make it a relaxing and peaceful environment with oriental influences from his travels. We loved the rose garden and wild meadows - we had wanted something a bit different and this venue offered it.”

The couple chose a natural theme using neutral colours with the flowers being the main focal point of their décor. “The area where our wedding breakfast was held has a beautiful dome in the centre and I knew that a flower cloud would look stunning suspended from it,” Kayleigh tells us. “I found a local florist, Emma from Thistle by Nature who understood the look that I was trying to achieve and her work was outstanding. I wanted a mix of dried flowers and grasses so that I could keep them afterwards. There are now several vases around our home displaying the flowers which is a wonderful reminder of our special day. Emma also created three meadow boxes that framed the ceremony beautifully in the courtyard.”

For their tables, Kayleigh and Tom wanted to keep the design simple by draping fabric runners topped with a mix of candles and foliage running down the centre. “I chose the fabric from a local shop and spent a week making the table runners and the napkins with my mother-in-law-to-be,” Emma tells us. “It was wonderful to spend some quality time together and the result was better than we expected! Each table was named after our favourite places and each place name was attached to a menu.”

The food and wine were really important to the couple. “We both

love cooking and going out for dinner and I spent 10 years working for Laithwaites, the wine company so we sourced and paired the wine ourselves opting for a Portuguese red variety and a delightful Picpoul de Pinet. The food by the kitchen team at Matara was outstanding and all of the produce was locally sourced and organic. Our guests had three choices of scallops, arancini balls and ginger panna cotta.”

Kayleigh and Tom chose a three-tier wedding cake. “Two of the tiers had a light coconut sponge with a zesty lime buttercream,” Kayleigh tells us. “Our son chose the chocolate middle tier and the result tasted delicious.”

Kayleigh chose a strapless dress with a soft lining and an ivory lace overlay by the designer Justin Alexander. “It was similar to the Berta designer wedding dresses I had been lusting over and my bridesmaids loved it!” Kayleigh explains. “It was being discontinued the following month and we were also going back into lockdown so I made a quick decision to purchase it. I also purchased a mini shift dress decorated with sequins that I could change into for the evening and can wear to parties in the future.”

Tom wore a pale-green suit teamed with a natural-coloured waistcoat featuring mother-of-pearl buttons and a silk lining. “Our son wore the same suit with a similar colour waistcoat and they looked very handsome together!” Kayleigh says. “Tom’s handmade English shoes added the final finishing touch. I wanted the groomsmen to wear a contrasting suit to Tom’s so we decided on the same style in grey with neutral-coloured waistcoats. I wanted to ensure that the groomsmen had a suit they could wear again in future.”

The couple’s two bridesmaids, Susie and Rhian and their maid-ofhonour, Rachel choose dresses that they loved in the chosen colour theme. “The result was gorgeous, each one looked stunning and the colours worked perfectly,” Kayleigh says.

Daisy and Alex Meehan married on 21st November 2021 at Cripps Barn in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Daisy and Alex viewed a few barn wedding venues before walking into Cripps Barn. “We both instantly knew that we wanted to get married there,” Daisy tells us. “We adored the rustic-inspired, romantic setting and the open fireplace was perfect for our winter wedding,” Daisy explains. “We were inviting 60 guests in total so the barn provided an ideal intimate setting.”

Daisy and Alex chose a personalised wooden board as their table plan. “It featured a watercolour stag design with burgundy touches that matched our invitations and welcome board,” Daisy tells us. “My uncle made the table numbers using horseshoes placed in the centre of each table on oak slabs and my father has a collection of restored post boxes and lent us one to use as a wedding post box which he drilled on to a wooden board and positioned on the side next to our guestbook.” The couple gave each guest a personalised wooden coaster with their name on it, which doubled up as their place setting and favour and provided a wonderful keepsake.

Daisy and Alex’s choice of flowers included white blooms with a hint of pink mixed with plenty of foliage. “Our bouquets and buttonholes looked perfect,” Daisy tells us. “Our florist collected the arrangements the following day and we loved being able to hand bunches out to our loved ones and keep some ourselves. Our buttercream cake was also decorated with fresh flowers along with a personalised wooden cake topper.”

The couple chose the British feast menu for their wedding breakfast. “It created a relaxed, social atmosphere with everyone helping themselves from large platters of food,” Daisy says. “Because our families are from different parts of the country, it got everybody talking which was lovely to watch. For the main course, we chose roast lamb with all the trimmings which was the best lamb we’ve ever had, and many of our guests said the same! Everything from the canapés to the pork baps served in the evening tasted delicious.”

Daisy wore a plain satin A-line gown featuring a pearl and diamanté belt that she teamed with a faux-fur cape and a satin-lined veil. “The shape of my dress was very flattering and I finished my look with some subtle diamond jewellery.”

Alex wore a grey morning suit, the same as the groomsmen, but teamed his with an ivory waistcoat while the others wore grey waistcoats. “The men wore matching pocket watches and cufflinks along with buttonholes made with pink roses and foliage plus burgundy ties and pocket squares to match the burgundy bridesmaids’ dresses,” Daisy tells us. “Our bridesmaids also wore fluffy cardigans with their fulllength dresses that looked stunning.”

Donna Regueira and Richard Regueira-Ibanez married on 2nd July 2022 at The Moonraker hotel in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.

Donna and Richard met when she purchased her first property and he was her mortgage advisor. “After a couple of professional meetings, it was clear there was a spark between us,” Donna says. “I was attracted to his easygoing and kind nature and we shared a love of good food and spending time together with friends, something we prioritise in our relationship. His handsome good looks didn’t hurt either!” Richard adds, “When we first met, I was taken aback at how stunning she was. As time went on with me helping her, I decided to take the plunge and ask her out on a date which was the best first and last first date ever and the rest is history.”

The couple became engaged during a trip to Venice, Italy in February 2019. “We had visited before and both fell in love with the city, so it was the perfect place for the surprise proposal!” Donna tells us. “Richard asked me to marry him on 11th February on the Rialto Bridge with a beautiful platinum and diamond ring that resembles the bridge from the side. The weather was misty and the streets were lined with fairylights so it looked beautiful.” Richard adds, “The week before we were due to fly to Venice, I spoke to Donna’s parents to ask their permission. Whilst in Venice, I took the ring out with me every night until the time I proposed.”

SETTING THE SCENE

The couple chose The Moonraker, a hotel located in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire as their wedding venue. They tell us, “The hotel offered the relaxed atmosphere that we were looking for, one that would make our guests feel at ease. We liked the beautiful setting, the neutral colour scheme and the stunning fireplace that we would be married in front of.”

Donna and Richard also liked the fact that they would have sole use of the venue for their entire day and evening, with rooms for their guests to stay over. “The deciding factor was when we stumbled upon the Hennessy plaque in the bar –Hennessy being my father’s surname,” Donna tells us. “At the time, he was very unwell (he sadly passed away in 2020) so this was a sign that the venue was meant to be. I went home to tell him and we set up a photograph of him in that corner of the bar on our special day.”

Donna travelled in style to her wedding venue in a baby blue vintage Fiat 500. “It was called Bluebell and perfect for our photographs!” she tells us. “After waiting two years for our special day, I was so happy to be marrying Richard and his vows were wonderful, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.” Just before I walked down the aisle, a robin flew down the aisle and perched on top of the ceremony chairs for a moment, in front of all the seated guests. It returned for the speeches which felt like a special someone was not going to miss our day.”

Richard adds, “Donna looked so beautiful and the first time I saw her in her dress, I had to turn away to stop myself from crying - there was a tear in my eyes.”

The couple’s pink and burgundy colour theme enjoyed a retro disco theme. “We used a brilliant stationary supplier called Sundown Paper to design our table plan and invitations with a fun, retro vibe in pink and burgundy,” Donna tells us. “We wanted our guests to open their invites and know that they were going to have a fun day!” The table names were things that reminded them of Venice where they became engaged. “This included Aperol Spritz,” Donna says. “For our favours, we gave each guest a scratch card which was the perfect icebreaker and a winning choice for some! I attached a shiny penny to each place name card with a pink heart on it, so everyone had a lucky penny to scratch off their cards with.”

For their centrepieces, Donna and Richard chose a selection of gin and champagne bottles filled with fairylights and small

disco balls. “Our florist created displays on each table of bright flowers with minimal foliage, to add the wow factor,” Donna says. “We got married in front of a beautiful old fireplace which our florist decorated with an amazing display of small and large disco balls, big blousy blooms, pampas grass and bottles filled with lights. Our loved ones kindly obliged by drinking plenty before our big day and saving the bottles for us!”

Donna’s bridal bouquet was stunning and more beautiful than she could have wished for. “It was filled with burgundy, red, pink and blush-coloured roses, hydrangea, and pink pampas and also featured a beautiful arch of orchids tumbling down,” she tells us. “I added a handmade pin badge featuring my favourite photograph of my dad.”

The team at The Moonraker hotel provided the couple’s catering. “We chose a selection of canapés for our guests to enjoy after our ceremony to pair with the prosecco,” they tell us. “We all tucked into a delicious three-course wedding breakfast followed by treats from a sweet cart that everyone loved. During the evening reception, our guests enjoyed fish and chips, pizza and ice cream served from a vintage bicycle. We also had doughnuts displayed on vintage cake stands along with our wedding cake. A good friend of ours, Tracey Butler made the mouthwatering lemon cake iced with rosette buttercream and finished with a retro cake topper of our names.”

LOOKING THE PART

Donna’s parents bought her wedding dress which was an A-line gown, style D3241 from Essence of Australia. “I chose it after visiting The Cotswold Frock Shop with my mum,” Donna tells us. “I fell in love with it. It had a sweetheart neckline, and off-theshoulder sleeves and was made from a glittery fabric underneath beaded lace. I teamed it with a pair of statement celestial earrings to keep the look modern and whimsical. Richard gave me a gold bangle with our wedding date which I also wore along with a pair of gold platform sandals and a custom-made pearl and gold glitter handbag with Mrs Regueira on.”

Donna’s hair was worn up in a relaxed style for a fun and casual feel. “I wore a personalised Mrs R hair grip for the evening reception. Our beautiful bridesmaids wore individual dresses that they chose in a selection of colours to match our wedding theme.”

Richard chose a blue morning suit with a white waistcoat and rose-pink cravat which he hired along with those for his groomsmen. “The suits fitted to perfection and the groomsmen matched mine apart from the detail on their waistcoats which had a simple stripe compared to the diamond pattern on my one,” Richard explains.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We hired a DJ for our evening reception who got the party started!” Donna and Richard tell us. “The dancefloor was packed from the moment he started until midnight!”

Our experts answer all your big-day questions

ALL THAT GLITTERS

The last thing on our to-do list for our upcoming festive wedding is to purchase the jewellery. What can we expect to see in store?

Meet the expert: Lorna Haddon is head of diamonds and jewellery at Beaverbrooks stores nationwide with a branch located in The Brunel Shopping Centre in Swindon, Wiltshire.

Lorna says: This Christmas we will be seeing several festive weddings, engagements and celebrations going ahead so we expect there will be significant demand for diamonds, jewellery and watches. Diamonds are always a best-seller for the Christmas period in our experience. We recently launched our new diamond collection called Essence featuring 27 pieces including a stunning variety of pendants, earrings, bracelets and rings. Our vision behind the collection is about capturing the ‘essence’ of life, so we wanted to create a diverse range that

encapsulates those magical moments. So many of us hold such deep, sentimental meanings behind the jewellery pieces we purchase – from signifying a new beginning to marking a connection with someone special.

Christmas time sees the party jewellery trend rise in popularity once again as customers wish to add some sparkle to their festive outfits with statement pieces, such as dazzling necklaces or drop earrings. The Essence range is perfectly suited to this trend, as well as bridal jewellery or sentimental gifting.

Also favourable for wedding gifts are designer and Swiss luxury watches. Silver jewellery also does particularly well – we expect coloured stones, birthstones, and initial jewellery to be top of the charts for our customers this year.

BIG-DAY BUDGET

We’re concerned about the rising cost of living on our big-day budget and venue choice. Any tips?

Meet the expert: Jonny Rose is the marketing manager at Slater Menswear with a store in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

Jonny says: Many newly engaged couples are planning their special day but it can be challenging trying to find that picture-perfect venue. Amid the cost of living crisis, there are some easy ways that newly engaged couples can keep their wedding expenses low while still enjoying an elegant and lavish venue: 

Limit your guest list

While the idea of inviting everyone you know to your wedding seems like tradition, this can end up costing you more.

 Stick to a set amount of people that you want to invite, for example, 40 to begin with, and make sure that all the important people are accounted for. By only keeping it close family and friends, you’ll be saving thousands of pounds in the long run.

www.gettyimages.co.uk

Food and drink

Make your invites e-invitations for as little as 20p per person

Although selecting wedding invites that are adorned with your name and pretty details can be a special keepsake from your big day, it can also be extremely costly. From postage stamps to matching envelopes, the price can quickly add up. Instead of opting for the traditional, evites can be personalised for as little as 20p per invite. Essentially, an e-invitation is an electronic invitation that’s sent to your invitees via email and can be a fun introduction to your wedding. You’re able to pick your design from a range of templates as well as add images and all the details of your big day.

If you’re looking to save money, getting married later in the day means that you’ll only have to serve one meal as opposed to two. Many venues allow for external catering and buffet-style food to be served at their location. Although the idea of serving a meal is more elegant, a buffet-style feast means that people can come and go as they please. You can set the tables up as one for starters and soups, another for mains and one for desserts. If you’re looking to add a special, personalised touch, you can also opt for themed tables with your favourite food. EXPERT ADVICE 61

Walking in a winter wonderland

Want to plan a seasonal wedding but unsure where to start? We’ve put together a guide to help you create the ultimate celebration

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME

One of the first things you should do is decide on a colour palette. This time of year has some wonderful hues available, including greens, reds, golds, blues and silvers. Choose one or two and stick to them. If you try and include every colour, it may look overwhelming and messy. If you want to go against tradition, an up-and-coming trend that we’ve seen here at County Wedding Magazines HQ is jewel tones. These can add warmth to your venue and can be incorporated into your glassware, candles and cutlery.

DECIDING ON A VENUE

Picking a venue can be overwhelming, especially if you have a restrictive criteria. Look through social media and magazines to get some inspiration, and once you have an idea of how many people you want to attend and the area you want to get married in, you can begin narrowing down your search. The weather, as we all know, can be pretty unpredictable, so if you’re going for an outdoor ceremony, make sure you have a backup plan in case it rains or snows.

FINDING THE PERFECT OUTFIT

If you’re tying the knot in the middle of winter, chances are it’s going to be pretty cold. Take this into consideration when choosing your dress, as you might start to feel chilly in a sleeveless gown. Those of you thinking of wearing a suit, choose warm fabrics and colours that will tie in with your theme.

Feather-trim dress, £45, www.dcey.co.uk

Bridal sandals, from a selection, www.davidsbridal.co.uk

ACCESSORISE AND SHINE

Accessories are your best friend when it comes to winter weddings. Do you desperately want a strapless gown but don’t want to freeze? Opt for a cover-up or bolero to keep you warm. These will tie in nicely with your theme and look super cute in those all-important photographs.

62

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES WARM

If you’re worried your guests might feel the chill, supply blankets and slippers. A firepit is another way of keeping everyone toasty while also adding a fun element to your day. If you want to take it to the next level, supply some marshmallows – yum!

MUST-HAVE FLOWERS

Whether you opt for an arch, grand centrepieces, an oversized bouquet or a hanging masterpiece, your flowers will create a statement in your photographs. There are a range of wintry blooms to choose from, including roses, ranunculus, berries and much more. With a strong emphasis on eco-friendly weddings, ask your florist if their flowers are grown in the UK and if they use eco-products where possible.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE

If you’re big fans of Christmas like us here at CWM, why not lean into the time of year and incorporate aspects of it into your winter theme? You could add a Christmas tree in your reception room, have festive-coloured bridesmaids’ dresses, use reindeers as table names, give your guests baubles as favours or even ask Santa to come and visit the little ones.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Food is one of the most important aspects of any wedding, so it’s important to pick something that fits your theme and personalities. With the cold weather outside, think of warming dishes such as soup or a roast dinner. You could serve mulled wine on arrival and create a fun hot chocolate station for the evening.

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

KIND AND CARING

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. Olverum’s diligently-crafted solution to effective, gentle cleansing is a combination of botanical mastery and scientific know-how. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. It turns into a dense, luxurious lather when wet and cleanses the body while respecting the skin, to leave it soft, supple and nourished with avocado oil. What’s more, its heavenly aromatic blend of essential oils, synonymous with Olverum’s hero products, helps to ease stress and relax tension. £26.50, www.olverum.com

A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. We Are Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner are both priced at £14 and can be found at www.weareconcentrate.com

AN EYE FOR ROMANCE

Founded by MUA Karla Powell, Karla Cosmetics creates handmade, on trend, colour-shifting eyeshadows and has recently launched its Romance Quad Palette – get ready to fall in love! Two years in the making, this innovative palette combines velvety-soft matte eyeshadows with the brand’s best-selling multichrome opal shades seen in pressed formula for the first time.

Inspired by all things romance and love, these shadows evoke passion with complementary warm pinks, cherry-hues and deep burgundies taking you all the way from fun and flirty to sultry siren. Meanwhile, the formula means the product glides on with ease, and the ultrapigmented rich tones give minimum fall out and maximum impact. £69, www.karlastore.co.uk

Continuing the no-filter beauty revolution, Sisley has revealed a new concealer. Hailed as a one-of-a-kind product it offers a new way to enhance natural beauty. The texture offers lightweight full coverage that blends in so well it’s virtually undetectable, and the smart doubleended format features a fine tip for precise application with a foam tip for blending. Its soft-focus effect and immediate radiance leave the skin looking more even and disguise any pigmentation flaws. So you can say “so long” to dilated pores, spots, fine lines, roughness, dark spots and redness. It conceals without drying out the skin, and with continued use can even benefit the complexion since alpha-bisabolol of natural origin is soothing. SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection. Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

Q&A

We reveal what’s trending this season

Claire says: Sustainable fabrics include organic lace, satin, mikado and natural silk

MAKE YOUR ENTRANCE IN STYLE

Meet the expert: Alexander Edwards is the managing director of The Cotswold Tailor with stores in Shipston-on-Stour in the North Cotswolds (close to the popular Gloucestershire towns of Chipping Campden, Broadway and Moreton-in-Marsh) and also a store in Woodstock in Oxfordshire.

We’re shopping for our gentlemen’s wedding attire for a mid-winter celebration – what styles, colours and fabrics are popular at the moment?

Alex says: This winter promises to be just as eventful and busy as the summer was. Our shop is buzzing with the excitement of newly engaged couples finalising their arrangements for their special day. As always with this time of year, we see a lot of the light-coloured, pastel shades of waistcoats and ties replaced with more autumnal colours. Burgundy patterned ties are always incredibly popular, as are navy, and an emerging trend seems to be burnt orange. All of the above pair nicely with tweed three-piece suits. The slightly more textured-looking tweeds, such as Harris tweed, not only look wintery but are also super-practical, providing warmth to their wearer which is perfect for those frosty December days.

Another shift that we’re seeing this season is the change in footwear. Boots are rarely worn for summer weddings but are hugely popular for winter weddings. Brown and dark tan continue to be the colour of choice with our 2022 winter grooms, with the darkened toe and coloured laces. It’s important to note, trousers fall very differently over a boot so make sure you opt for the right length of trousers depending on

your choice of footwear.

One exciting development is the return in popularity of the morning suit. We’re hiring out more morning suits this year than ever before. This traditional garment can’t hesitate to turn heads and is ideal for slightly more formal venues such as the stately homes. Just because these classic suits have been around for decades, they don’t have to be shapeless and old-fashioned. There are many companies out there such as ours that have taken these classic garments and given them a contemporary twist. Our morning suits have tailored fitted trousers, flat fronts instead of the usual pleated trousers and a nice waisted silhouette offering the wearer a very flattering fit.

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

86

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.

Pure luxury

After hearing about The Belfry Hotel & Resort, an award-winning hotel in the heart of Sutton Coldfield with three world-class golf courses, 300+ bedrooms, multiple restaurants and a luxurious spa, I was excited to experience it first-hand.

The host of The Ryder Cup four times, more than any other venue in the world, The Belfry Hotel & Resort has gone down in history as the backdrop to some extremely notable golf moments and has hosted its fair share of famous names and faces. Less than 10 miles from Birmingham Airport, International Train Station, Alexander Stadium and Birmingham’s NEC, it’s surrounded by prominent local landmarks, and is in a prime position for any travelling guests who need a place to lay their heads.

A ROYAL WELCOME

Walking through the double doors, I was met with a stunning entrance adorned with rich fabrics and beautiful floral displays. Walking past the generous amount of guest seating, the white portico pillars and vibrant yellow neon sign for the Brabazon Bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the quirky chandelier that was taking centre stage.

The very helpful Ryan, who was working at the check-in desk, detailed exactly where we needed to go to find our room. As we walked through

the wood-claded corridors lined with busy event and conference suites, we found the lift up to the second floor in search of the Presidential Suite. The largest and most impressive of all their overnight accommodation, the suite offers a family-sized living room complete with comfortable sofas, a dining table, a mini-kitchen space with all the comforts of home, and two separate balconies with views of the world-class golf courses.

The bedroom had luxurious plush armchairs, a desk, a luscious kingsized bed, and quite possibly the biggest en-suite bathroom I’ve ever seen! Equipped with his and hers wash basins, a free-standing bath, a spacious shower cubicle, and two separate toilets, it’s safe to say you won’t be waiting for your turn to use the bathroom.

REST AND RELAXATION

Picking up our swim bags, we headed to the spa to try out the Fire & Ice Experience. Here, Michelle gave us a guided tour through the varied selection of 12 bio thermal rooms, all designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses. Knowing that this spa had been named a finalist in the Best Day Spa category for the Good Spa Guide Awards 2022, I was excited for the experience to begin. Starting with a foot spa and moving through the hot and cold steam, sauna, and shower rooms,

88
Beth Morton and her hubby visited The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield

we experienced both the shock and delight that came with such extreme temperatures – it was divine! Our personal favourites were the Igloo Room, which offers chilled walls and an ever-filling ice bucket for a body massage, and the Aroma and Crystal Steam Rooms, both heavenlyscented spaces designed to cleanse and purify.

From here, we popped down to the iconic Brabazon Bar, which was crowned winner of the Hotel Bar of the Year category at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022, for a cheeky cocktail (or three) and found ourselves transported back in time. The bar, rich in bottle green leathers with portico pillars, showcases a breathtaking raised glass ceiling that is a sight to behold.

READY, SET, PLAY!

After hearing numerous tales of woe from my husband about how he’s always the worst player on his group golfing trips, we both jumped at the chance of hitting a few golf balls at the driving range.

Despite the brilliant Toptracer technology allowing us to see our flight paths and providing data to work on our swing technique, it’s safe to say that we won’t be challenging Tiger Woods to a match any time soon!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort offers an impressive selection of restaurants, each a little different from the other, and we were lucky enough to dine in the fabulous Ryder Grill. The buffet here is one of the most deliciouslooking and gourmet-sounding selections I’d ever seen, but since my hubby is lactose-intolerant and vegetarian, we decided to choose from the à la carte menu.

Having made our selections, we were treated to a stunning salmon, beetroot, and wasabi starter adorned with edible flowers and a vibrant carpaccio of tomatoes. The main course, generous in size, was a seared sea trout with garlic potatoes and a very artistic fennel bhaji. The highlight of the meal was the extra dessert that our wonderful waitress Annie brought out when she realised we were struggling to decide. We scoffed a chocolate torte, a cheese selection and a sticky toffee banana bread – yum!

Our night ended on a high after we made our way back to our Presidential Suite and fell into blissful slumbers in a bed that felt lighter than air.

We had a wonderful time at The Belfry Hotel & Resort and are looking forward to coming back soon!
