THE WALLED GARDEN Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours.

Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place.

Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats.

EVENTS ARENA

At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away.

Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn.

Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Happy birthday to us!

Your Sussex Wedding is 100 and doesn’t it look great for its age? That’s right, well into our 17th year of publishing, we’re celebrating our 100th issue! I’ve been the editor of this wonderful title since issue 75 and feel incredibly proud to have been part of its history. The first issue hit the shelves in 2006 with a venue focus on Brighton and boy have things changed since then! I managed to find a copy in the archives and dusted it off to find that fashions had more in common with the 1990s than they do the 2020s. Designs were all about taffeta, boned bodices and bags of embellishment – words I hardly hear these days in relation to wedding dresses. What’s more, it was rare indeed to see a groom not sporting a cravat.

However, some things don’t change. Then editor Demelza, looking into the world of wedding planning, told readers: “Employing a planner can dramatically reduce the stress that sometimes occurs as a result of organising such a big event. Indeed, being able to speak to someone objectively, with plenty of experience in this field, will not only give you confidence about the running of your big day, but will also give you plenty of ideas and inspiration along the way.” And that’s as true now as it ever was.

Vintage-themed weddings were equally on trend in 2006 and we featured the gorgeous real wedding of Laura and Jerome, where the bride looked every bit the picture-perfect image of Lady Mary, back when Downton Abbey was still a figment of Julian Fellowes’ imagination! Plus, many of the same suppliers were featured that we’re still proud to work with today.

Your Sussex Wedding has been bringing local wedding content to nearlyweds for the best part of two decades, becoming a much-valued go-to source of inspiration and advice for many tying the knot in this gorgeous county. We exist to champion the local and very much hope that we can continue to do so for many moons to come. We’d never have reached this ripe old age (still looking good) without our lovely readers and Sussex’s amazing suppliers who’ve supported us all these years. A huge thank you to you all.

Here’s to the next 100 issues! And as ever, keeeep planning!

Kelly x

Kelly Andrews, editor Issue 75 to 100... and beyond!

Issue one – if it were human it’d nearly be old enough to drink and I’d be saving to send it to university!

THE SECRET TO OUR SUCCESS

With 100 issues-worth of real wedding features behind us, I often wonder how our past couples are getting on, so it was wonderful to hear from Maria and Jessica whose big day featured in issue 82. Delighted to hear how happy they are together, I asked them to let us in on the secrets to their successful marriage.

Maria says, “Firstly, start and finish the day with an 'I love you.' And get the in-laws to love you – mine calls me TLM (The Lovely Maria)! Continue to find common interests, in our case it's red wine, and revisit places that are special to both of you. For example, where the proposal was, where you got married, where you went on honeymoon.

“We've had an amazing, eye-opening, life-changing three-and-ahalf years since getting married and we're very excited about the future.”

The pair honeymooned in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand and were kind enough to share some of their gorgeous photos.

EDITOR LOVES

Scent My Wedding was started by two best friends, Holly and Sara. Based on a love of home fragrance and styling, the two female entrepreneurs saw a gap in the wedding market while planning Sara’s wedding. They already own a successful home fragrance business and saw this as a natural extension to what they already do.

Scent My Wedding offers a bespoke venue-scenting service where you can have your favourite or chosen scent discreetly diffused throughout your entire day via a powerful diffuser unit or a series of beautiful candles and reed diffusers.

The company also offers wedding favours in the form of miniature reed diffusers, candles or wax melts: wonderful gifts for all your guests to evoke memories of your incredible day. All favours can be personalised in your colour palette, with labels and packaging to match.

Use code SWM2022 to receive an exclusive 25 per cent extra free offer on all favours purchased before 31 March 2023. Also, check out www.scentmywedding.co.uk

SWEET DREAMS

Wedding venue Cissbury Barns has opened the doors to The North Wing at Cissbury House, its new elegant and inviting two-bedroom apartment. Lovingly decorated with an abundance of charm, it’s perfect for the night before the big day, bridal preparations and the wedding night.

The private entrance leads to a bright and airy lobby with stairs taking you up to the first floor where you’ll find a beautiful light-filled sitting room with fireplace, comfy sofa, chairs and dining area. The two gorgeous bedrooms have the most luxurious deep mattresses ensuring the best night’s sleep.

The largest of the two rooms has a super-king size bed, original fireplace and built-in wardrobe. The smaller bedroom has a king-size bed, fireplace, dressing table and modern clothes rail. Both offer fluffy bathrobes and cosy slippers.

The North Wing also has a fully-fitted galley kitchen complete with tableware, appliances and bathroom with power shower and bath. You’ll also have access to a private, secluded garden. What more could you wish for?

A NEW DEPARTURE

November marked the launch of a new brand identity for Brighton’s viewing tower from British Airways i360 to Brighton i360, further aligning the beloved attraction to the vibrant city of Brighton and Hove.

Ian Hart, chief operating officer, says, “As one of the city’s major tourist attractions we’re thrilled to rebrand to our new name of Brighton i360. It enables us to further embrace all that’s great about our wonderful location and community here in Brighton and injects a sense of fun. Part of embracing our local community is working with local businesses to develop our new brand identity. Local brand agency, Designate, has designed our new logo, brand guidelines and advertising campaign, while Brighton-based fashion brand, Gresham Blake, has designed our fabulous new uniform.”

Brighton i360 is a unique attraction featuring a giant glass viewing pod, home to the South Coast’s highest sky bar. THE THEATRE OF CIVIL CEREMONIES

Fresh, charismatic personality Mark Inscoe has entered the expanding network of independent civil celebrants and is looking forward to creating and presenting personalised ceremonies as Civil Celebrant Sussex.

Having enjoyed a long and successful career as an actor, Mark’s background is in musical theatre and has appeared in the original London casts of Sunset Boulevard, Grand Hotel and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. Most recently he portrayed Florenz Ziegfeld in Funny Girl in Paris for five months.

Mark is also a voice-over artist and has been heard narrating various TV documentaries, voicing characters on the BAFTA-winning game Divinity: Original Sin II and was the voice of the E Harmony commercial campaign for three years. In fact, this voice work was a lifesaver throughout Covid lockdowns, but like many, this period of disruption forced a career rethink. Mark was inspired by theatre colleague Alison who moved into the civil ceremony industry about six years ago and having the chance to see her in action brought the realisation that this would be hugely rewarding work.

Alison’s advice was invaluable and led Mark to Civil Ceremonies Ltd where he completed two Level 3 diplomas and has now qualified to create and deliver customised ceremonies for wedding celebrations, renewal of vows and more. “Meeting clients and the writing process and presentation of ceremonies is the perfect work to utilise the skill set and life experience gained over decades of being an actor. Civil celebrancy is a sort of theatre in many ways,” he says.

Mark has lived in Brighton for 20 years, and has been part of its vibrant, diverse and forward-thinking community, which now offers the ideal location to launch his new business. To discover how Mark can put together the perfect wedding ceremony for you, get in touch via www.civilcelebrantsussex.com

TO THE NEWLYWEDS!

East Sussex wine estate Everflyht has recently released its debut wines, the Brut Sparkling NV (£28) and Sparkling Rosé de Saignée 2019 (£40). The former is a blend of pino noir and chardonnay, with a small percentage of pinto meunier bringing structure and complexity. A portion of the blend has spent time in old and new oak, with 20 per cent of the blend made up of Everflyht’s reserve wine. Meanwhile, the Rosé de Saignée 2019 is a blend of 60 per cent pino noir and 40 per cent pinor meunier and made in a fruit-forward style with a portion of the blend matured on lees in old oak barrels for added depth and character. Both make for a delightful glass of bubbly to toast your big day with.

Owners Sam and Ben Ellis play a hands-on role with the viticulture and winemaking, working closely with general manager Luke Spalding. Sam says, “We wanted to make our own unique style of premium English sparkling wine, with plenty of fruit, flavour and individuality. We’re so excited that this Christmas we’ll finally be able to enjoy our own wines with friends and family!”

A late release and a Blanc de Noirs are expected in 2023/24. Find out more at www.everflyht.com

You’re timeless to me

Tasia and Daniel tied the knot on 8th October, 2022 and styled their day in a gorgeously befitting emerald green palette Images courtesy of Nikki Legg Photography

Our story is one built on never-ending patience and a complete inability to understand hints,” bride Tasia tells us. It begins in 2013 when she and Daniel were thrown together while studying theology and religion at the University of Chichester, and Tasia quickly decided they’d be great friends. Daniel on the other hand, was less convinced. Tasia was loud and friendly, while he couldn’t have been more different. Yet, deep down they both shared many similarities and were yet to realise just how compatible they were. As they went through university, they became good friends and even joked about getting married one day. After Daniel graduated, they stayed in close contact while Tasia finished her final year and growing closer, they turned their wonderful friendship into a relationship.

The couple booked a mini-break in Wales in October 2020, staying in Ty Gwyn Shepherds Huts where they could escape for a few days. Daniel had designed the engagement ring and had it made by a jewellers in London, but there was a slight delay with the courier, so he secretly arranged to have it delivered to the hut’s owner. On the last day of their break, the ring finally arrived, and Daniel got down on one knee and asked the all-important question. The answer of, “Me? Are you sure?” was unexpected, but it happily turned into a, “Yes!”

The pair were due to be married at St James’ Church in Shere, their vicar’s home church, but had to relocate as they couldn’t find the perfect reception venue close by. It was important to them that Rev. Sarah conducted their ceremony as Daniel used to work with her and they had become close friends. Deciding to look for somewhere closer to home, they stumbled upon and fell in love with Cottesmore Golf and Country Club. “Something inside us knew then that this venue would be perfect, and as soon as we were able after lockdown restrictions lifted, we scheduled a visit,” Tasia shares. What’s more they could have the barn room as well as the main ballroom, which was important since they’d decided to have their first dance alone allowing them to share this special moment privately together. “Cottesmore was everything we’d imagined and hoped for. It was our wedding venue. Before even deciding on a church close by, we’d booked it!” Luckily, they were able to visit St Mary’s Church, Horsham a couple of weeks later and as soon as they entered through the grand doors and saw the breathtaking stained-glass window, they knew this was where they wanted to say “I do.”

Join us as the bride shares her happy memories of the big day...

SETTING THE SCENE

Tasia and Daniel decided on a palette with emerald green at its heart. “We thought this would be perfect for our autumn/winter wedding and we both love the colour. We decided then to add classic black and white with hints of silver,” Tasia explains.

The bride has an incredibly talented friend who was able to create the stunning emerald green and silver place names. For a year, she worked hard to ensure the colour was perfect and each piece of silver leaf was carefully placed. They wanted to have a table plan that no one had seen before and had the wow factor. After hours of searching for ideas online, Tasia found one that she fell in love with. It was black with each guest’s name and table on an individual card decorated with a sprig of gypsophila. The plan was then decorated with green foliage and accentuated by silver lanterns and black candlesticks. “This was a project and a half,” says Tasia. “But our fantastic events coordinator was as invested as we were and created an absolute masterpiece.”

As for all of their wedding stationery the couple wanted something sleek, simple, timeless and classic for their table names. So, they found Jasmine from Dreams to Themes who worked with them

to create these, as well as the invitations, table plan cards, wedding welcome signs and timeline. “All of our stationery had the same theme: the black border with a mixture of italics and capitalised words, then our initials at the top. Each time a draft was sent Jasmine exceeded our expectations and created absolute perfection,” Tasia says.

Flowers seemed to have fallen by the wayside amongst the rest of the planning and the couple didn’t actually have a florist until four months before the wedding when Cathy and Paul from Sussex Roses came to the rescue. The bride remembers, “They were fantastic to work with and they knew exactly what we had in mind. We aren’t big flower people and just wanted dark foliage for the centrepieces, signage and photo hoop, with gypsophila for each guest’s card on the table plan as well as the bouquets.” They decided on a minimalist approach for the centrepieces, which featured black candlesticks with electric taper candles, dark green foliage, silver tea light holders and real pinecones.

Despite having a traditional wedding the duo knew they didn’t want a traditional wedding cake. Happily they found the amazing Carrie at Caritas Cake Design and fell in love with her designs. After sharing their vision with her, she was as excited about the cake as they were and it turned out even more incredible than Tasia could ever have imagined. “More importantly, it was the best cake we’ve ever eaten,” she says. It had five tiers, which included lemon cake, red velvet and chocolate fudge cake filled with salted caramel butter cream and a caramel drizzle. There was also a dummy tier enrobed in Belgian chocolate ganache.

In keeping with the traditional and sophisticated theme Tasia and Daniel opted for the classic wedding car. They found Brooklands Wedding Cars online and they made everything so easy, which was very much appreciated in the midst of planning. “On the day, our driver was a star. She was so kind, helpful and an expert in knowing exactly what we might want or need after our ceremony. She even came prepared with water and champagne, and offered to drive a longer route to allow us some quiet time together,” Tasia shares.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride initially struggled to find her dream dress. She visited several stores, but nothing was calling out to her. She was looking for something with sleeves and no lace, but didn’t expect how difficult it would be to find. Deciding to broaden her search she came across bespoke bridal designer Emma Tindley and reached out to her. Tasia remembers, “Emma understood exaclty what I wanted and was honest about what would or wouldn’t work. We then sketched my dress and it was made entirely bespoke. It was made from a Mikado fabric, woven using recycled fibres, meaning it was carbon neutral. We added a layer of tulle on the skirt to make it a little more playful and the style was perfect for me.”

Given the sleek and classic nature of the dress Tasia chose not to have many accessories, but was the keen to have the longest veil her head would hold! This was also made by Emma Tindley and it added beautifully to the drama of the back of the dress.

“Before the big day Daniel never knew the levels he’d go to in the name of style,” Tasia laughs. Not just any suit would do – if it could be worn in the office it was ruled out. After some careful searching, the groom and groomsmen chose dark navy suits with emerald green ties and pocket squares. Wanting to stand out Daniel then went on the hunt for a silver waistcoat and managed to snag one before having the suit tailored.

Tasia’s vision for the bridesmaids was of dresses with sleeves. She wanted them to feel comfortable as they’d no idea what the weather would be like, this look would also mirror her own gown beautifully. Eventually, she found the perfect one in emerald green on ASOS. “It looked stunning on each bridesmaid and they looked unbelievably beautiful,” she says.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

To entertain guests, the couple hired a band and a magician. Tasia tells us, “Luckily, one of our close university friends is an outstanding close-up magician, and we knew he’d provide fantastic entertainment. We weren’t wrong! By the end of the night, everyone was coming up to us saying: ‘Have you seen the magic man?’!”

Originally, they’d decided against a band, but the more they visualised the day, the more they started to regret that decision. “We found Electric Outfit who kept the party going all night. They interacted with our guests and even managed to get

REAL WEDDINGS 37

the most ardent non-dancers busting their moves,” the bride says. Rounding off the day perfectly, all assembled gathered in the courtyard for sparklers before heading up to the veranda for hot chocolate and fireworks. The couple provided personalised cups for the hot chocolates and guests were able to add cream, marshmallows and some delicious syrup flavours.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Tasia says, “In the morning I was feeling a little nervous and a bit stressed but then I remembered that the one person I want by my side when things are getting chaotic was at the church waiting for me! With this realisation, all the worry melted away and I would have happily run through the streets of Horsham to marry him.”

Daniel shares, “I’m not known for being a terribly calm person during big occasions. Plenty gets me nervous, but from the day before an immense feeling of calm excitement came over me. Being in the church and marrying the person I know is right for me felt so completely natural. From then, it was a blur of seeing all of the people I love most celebrating and enjoying the sight of our planning coming to fruition. It’s such a great feeling to say that my happiest and proudest day was our wedding day.”

WITH THANKS

“We were honestly blown away with Cottesmore’s commitment and care for our wedding,” Tasia says. “They’d been absolutely fantastic throughout the planning process and in the morning the staff came outside to wave me off to the church. It’s a moment I’ll remember forever. They prioritised us completely and made us feel like we were the only people in the world getting married.”

Although Daniel was originally sceptical about hiring a venue styling company when Amy from Events by Amy and Tasia turned up to their first meeting wearing practically identical outfits, he knew it was right and Amy would be the perfect person to help their vision come to life. “Amy was so brilliant to work with and no idea ever seemed crazy or impossible. We are so thankful to her for everything she and her team did. She brought our wedding to life,” the bride says.

TASIA & DANIEL’S TOP TIP

“Give yourself as much time as possible to plan. We didn’t want to be planning every evening and weekend and wanted to enjoy the process. We had two years to put everything together and if there was a weekend where we weren’t particularly up for talking about the wedding, we could take time off. The wedding we initially pictured was completely different to the one we had! As we had more time, we were able to think more about the finer details and not rush into decisions.”

BUTTERFLIES You give me

When Kayleigh and Haden discovered their wedding fell on the same day as the local air show they decided to make the most of it

Images courtesy of Ashley Hemsley Photography

Kayleigh and Haden met while working as prison officers. Together, they built a strong friendship, then further down the line this naturally blossomed into a relationship. Haden proposed at home one day. He came into their bedroom, where Kayleigh was sitting at the time, with her daughters – Immi, three, and Leila, five. Her youngest gave Kayleigh a ring box and asked, “Will you marry Haden?” Kayleigh remembers, “It was a massive surprise and completely perfect to involve the children.”

The couple chose to tie the knot at All Saints the Old Chapel in

Eastbourne. “It just took our breath away as soon as we walked in. Its high ceilings, stained-glass windows and beautiful garden were just so romantic and utterly perfect for our ceremony,” Kayleigh explains. After they set the date they discovered it would be Airbourne that weekend, and knew they needed to find a reception venue that’d give them a view of the seafront and the planes! The Royal Eastbourne Golf Club was just the place.

Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day – 19th August, 2022...

REAL WEDDINGS 41

Haden was staring at me during the vows and totally forgot what he was meant to be saying! It made everyone laugh when the registrar had to repeat it.

An amazing harpist played during ceremony, she gave it such a romantic vibe. Haden even convinced her to play Eye Of The Tiger as as our exit music!

I found my dream dress by Allure Bridals and felt like a princess all day!

Haden bought me a beautiful Vera Wang necklace to wear with it and I wore my hair up to show off the neckline and back detail of my gown. I also had Sophia Webster Chiara heels – the most comfortable I’ve ever worn!

Haden wore a light grey jacket and waistcoat with black trousers. The groomsmen wore the same suits but with pink waistcoats. We weren’t worried about everyone matching completely, but they all tied in together nicely.

42

My bridesmaids wore grey multiway dresses. I wanted to go for something they might be able to wear again. The flowergirls wore white and grey dresses, which they all said made them feel like princesses.

My mum and Haden booked a horse and carriage as a surprise for me. I’m a massive horse lover and it totally made my day. They we beautiful and so calm, even when our guests were making a fuss of them.

Tracey and the team at Ambers Florist are amazing! I told her I wanted roses and eucalyptus and they made the most perfect bouquets and buttonholes.

For our centrepieces we had Martini glasses filled with roses, which sat on mirrors.

Our favours were mirrored butterflies with our names and wedding date on them, and a mini pack of personalised Love Heart sweets both in a little butterfly-shaped box.

Cuckoo Cakes made three different flavoured tiers for our wedding cake and gave it a beautiful ombre effect. Everyone loved it.

REAL WEDDINGS 43

I can honestly say, I married my best friend. I look at the photos and in most of them I have that silly smile that you only get when you’re truly happy. Blending our families officially was perfect. I knew it was right because there isn’t anyone else I’d want to spend the rest of my life with.

Our

It was

We went to the Ambre Hotel in Mauritius on honeymoon for a week. Haden planned and booked the entire thing and it was absolutely incredible. We saw grey whales, swam with wild dolphins, did a walk under the sea and went parasailing.

My top planning tip? Let the groom do it! Haden planned the majority of our wedding and it was amazing. As long as you’re happily married to the person you can’t spend your life without by the end of the day, then you’ve done what you set out to do. Everything else is a bonus.

Charlotte and Kieran said “I do” at Laughton Barns in August 2022

Images courtesy of N Davies Photography

Kieran proposed to Charlotte in Santorini. “He took me to a spot high up, by the water, to get the best view of the sunset,” Charlotte tells us. He set up his camera to take a selfie of the two of them, and as Charlotte readied herself she looked over at Kieran and he was down on one knee. “It was such a shock, and he caught the moment on camera perfectly,” she says. When the couple began to look for a venue, they were immediately drawn to Laughton Barns, thanks to its amazing grounds, beautiful barn and fishing lake – Kieran loves to fish. So, the location was booked and the date set for 5th August, 2022. Read on as Charlotte tells us more...

47 REAL WEDDINGS

What stood out for me was seeing my children walk down the aisle, their little faces so happy.

My dress wasn’t one I’d chosen to try on myself. The lady in the shop actually picked it out and that’s the one I went for in the end. Both my friends cried when I walked out and I just felt right in it.

I was very emotional leading up to the day, as I hadn’t had long to get my head around my dad not being there to walk me down the aisle. I felt so nervous about this part of the day, but once this was done, I felt I could relax and enjoy it.

The bridesmaids were dressed in pink multiway gowns.

Kieran wore a three-piece suit in light blue with a navy waistcoat. The groomsmen wore the same suit in navy with the light blue waistcoat, making the groom stand out. Our three children wore the suit in light blue too.

Kieran hired a singer as a surprise, who performed outside after the ceremony, which was beautiful. Then, during the groom’s speech he announced that he’d written a song for me and called the singer back in to perform it. It was amazing, the best speech I’ve ever heard.

48

For the children we had a bouncy castle, giant Jenga, tug of war and a giant Connect4.

We put our own touch on as much as we could. Our tables were all named after Ed Sheeran songs, as we’re massive fans. Our top table was Perfect, which was also our first dance song.

We doubled up our favours and place names by having individuallywrapped biscuits with Mr & Mrs Brown, the wedding date and the guest’s name on them, all in a mixture of white, light pink and dusky pink to go with our colour palette.

Our amazing flowers featured a combination of white, pinks and some greenery. We had some low arrangements on the tables and some high ones placed on tall stands. They were beautiful.

We went on honeymoon to Belek in Turkey and stayed at a wonderful resort called Sueno Delux. We actually won it last year! Our wedding had been postponed twice due to Covid, so we’d provisionally booked to go there back in 2020. Everyone who had a booking back then got put into a draw and we were lucky enough to be picked!

This talented team of local suppliers turned their hands to creating not one but three different looks for this styled shoot at The Grand Eastbourne

Images courtesy of The Soul Of My Lens Photography

Owner of Beauty Ninjas Claire Reed, together with her team of local wedding suppliers, set out to demonstrate their versatility through three different themes. Read on as Claire tells us more about the stunning looks they put together...

“For Becky’s boho styling we chose a curly chignon and kept the make-up earthy in tone. These images really showcase the stainedglass windows at the Hotel, and the cake and invitations were designed to complement the boho theme.”

52

“Nina’s look is classically glamorous, so we chose a high chignon with black eyeliner, smoky eye and natural lip.”

“For Kaiya we chose a modern take on Hollywood glamour and opted for loose waves, a brown smoky eye and a natural lip. These dark, dramatic shots contrast beautifully with the light, bright images captured elsewhere in the shoot.”

Autumn’s IN THE AIR

From the minds of East Sussex’s creative suppliers comes this celebration of autumn wedding perfection

The seed of thought for this stunning seasonal styled shoot began to take root with Emily from My Little Vintage, and it wasn’t long before she got in touch with photography team Charlotte and Callum from C&C Imagery to help bring the vision to life. The largely East Sussex-based team set about creating a showcase of their style through a warm, vintage, rustic vibe.

Kelly and Laurence from Bella June Flowers used an array of warm autumnal tones to set the scene at the Yoghurt Rooms. Soft, muted coffee roses nestled among strong corals and peachy hues painted the perfect picture for this gorgeous rural set up. Meanwhile, Kieron’s Kitchen showcased an autumn-themed afternoon tea, based around simple combinations of colour and flavours using local suppliers to provide sweet and savoury bite-size treats, such as a glazed cinnamon Italian meringue pumpkin pie. These tasty morsels were perfectly complemented by My Little Vintage’s authentic vintage crockery and table styling with oodles of elegance and style. The team from Ashdown Events were also on hand to style the venue, bringing drapes and small props to fit the vintage barn theme.

We love everything about this shoot, not least the incredible bespoke veils from Anne-Marie Prescott, complete with custom autumn-leaf embroidery. Seasonal wedding perfection!

THE TIME OF OUR LIVES

We take a look back at 2022 through the lenses of the county’s wedding photographers

What a wedding-packed year it’s been – 2022: our first full year of restriction-free celebrations since the start of the pandemic. Surely it’s one for this history books. Our local wedding suppliers have never been so busy turning their couples’ wedding dreams into a long-awaited, reality. “Finally” is certainly a word we’ve heard a lot this year!

Before we bid farewell to 2022 we asked the region’s wedding photographers to guide us on a look back at their year’s highlights. They’ve been rushed of their feet and are no doubt ready to put them up in front of the fire and enjoy some Christmas telly, but we reckon they wouldn’t have it any other way!

on! THEME

The ultimate guide to styling your venue

Join us for a stroll through the wonderful world of wedding venue styling. It’s all too easy to get carried away, but when a simple idea is executed to perfection, well, that’s when you have a theme come true!

CHOOSING A THEME

Settling on a theme can be a tricky business, so the best way forward might be to consider your personalities and common ground, and don’t be afraid to seek help. Rachel Piper from The Fantastical Events Company says, “The theme you choose for your wedding will ultimately come down to your personal tastes, the style of venue, the time year and your budget. There are so many options available from traditional, rustic or boho to modern and festival-inspired. The whole prospect can be daunting on top of organising guests, photographers, caterers – the whole shebang! This is where event stylists come in. We discuss all the ins and outs of the wedding with you and get a feel for your personalities, clarify your likes and dislikes, check for any limitations at the venue, then, based on your budget, present you with a moodboard of ideas and the props we can offer, fully styled. Pinterest and Instagram are great sources for décor inspiration and any good stylist will take on board your suggestions to come up with your perfect wedding at a price you can afford.”

The rustic theme has been extremely popular in recent years and shows no signs of abating. So, if this is one you have your own hearts set on look out for local suppliers who specialise in creating this vibe. One such company is West Sussex-based Ace Rustic Hire. Owner Vikki started out by creating various rustic items along with her dad for her own wedding. They received so many compliments that they decided to share these creations and the business began. Vikki says, “The majority of our items are hand made using reclaimed wood and our range includes table decorations, centrepieces, welcome signs, crates, backdrops, post boxes, seating plan, running order displays, display ladder, sweet cart and bars.”

EXPERT TOP TIPS

Emily from Weddings by Emily Charlotte shares her expert advice on how to choose a theme.

Think about how you envision your wedding day, not just from a style perspective, but the overall atmosphere and setting. Start by writing down some key words that help summarise this, for example: indoors/outdoors, summer/autumn, relaxed/formal, intimate/ party. If someone asked you about your ideal wedding day, these should be the words that instantly come to mind.

Think about how you want your guests to feel at your wedding. Do you want it to be comfortable and familiar, or an impressive experience? Is it important that they have wow-factor moments, or would you prefer a more subtle day but one that’s done well?

Next, consider your own personal style; what are you, your partner and your bridal party likely to be wearing? You don’t need to have your exact wedding dress picked out yet but if you dream of a black-tie affair then this will suit certain venues and styles more than others.

Don’t be too influenced by trends. By their very nature, trends come and go. If you want your wedding style to last the test of time, then don’t do something just because it’s fashionable. If you love it, then that’s different, go for it! But if you go for a style purely because it’s current, you may look back at your photos in years to come and wish you hadn’t!

SPEAKS VOLUMES

It doesn’t pay to overlook the setting you’ll be styling, not only when deciding on a theme and palette, but practicality too is crucial. Rachel from The Fantastical Events Company explains, “Picking a venue is not without its considerations. While there are so many beautiful hotels, castles, farms, barns and blank canvases to choose from in Sussex, it’s best to do your research to ensure there are no limitations in terms of what you can and can’t do on your special day. For example, some venues may insist on providing catering themselves. Others may have noise restrictions in terms of live music or DJs, only allow preferred suppliers or, if they’re in demand, may only give you 24 hours to set up and take down, which can be super-stressful.

“Location is also very important. How far is the venue? How will your guests get there? Is there ample parking and accommodation nearby for those faraway relatives? If you’re opting for a festival-style celebration in a hired field more planning will be involved to ensure factors such as power, lighting, weather-proof areas, catering and guest safety are covered.”

Draping can transform a venue into an intimate romantic haven, but there are elements you’ll need to take into account with regards your venue. Fiona Sharkey from Ashdown Events tells us more, “Don’t try to cover up something too big to hide. By draping you can sometimes just draw attention to the very thing you’re trying to disguise! Also, consider any air con units as we can’t cover those.

“What’s more, a lot of ceilings are too low to drape and you’ll make the room seem a lot smaller by trying. Finally, be sure to manage your expectations. Budgets for those big glitzy venues in the U.S. are huge, if you don’t have a £100,000 budget best not look at the pictures!”

EXPERT TOP TIPS

Emily from Weddings by Emily Charlotte shares her expert advice on what to bear in mind when it comes to your venue and styling it.

How will your day flow at the venue, which spaces will you use, and where will your guests walk to get from one location to the next? Look at what is (or isn’t) in situ at the venue: colours, patterns, textures, structures. Take photos so you can refer back to this once you get to the styling stage of your wedding.

Look at both your plan A (good weather) and plan B (wet weather) options; will your décor plans need to change if you had to implement the latter or can they simply be transferred from one space to another?

Check if there are any restrictions or specific suppliers that must be used in your preferred spaces; for example, don’t assume flower installations on existing fixtures will be permitted, if in doubt always ask to avoid any surprises after you’ve committed to a particular design theme.

Request clear details on what is (and just as important, what isn’t) included in your venue. Do they offer a choice of tables, chairs, linens, glassware, crockery etc? Be clear on what is available to you within the fee, what may come at an extra cost and what will need to be hired externally.

LOOKING AFTER THE PENNIES

We’d always recommend that you sit down together and agree on a budget at the very start of your W-day journey, before you do anything else. Deciding how much you’ll devote to the venue styling will be an important part of that, not least because it’s an area in which you can all too easily get swept away. This way, when you’re looking at venues you can get an idea of whether you’ll be able to achieve the look you want within budget given the blank canvas you have in front of you.

Emily from Weddings by Emily Charlotte has some suggestion on where to start.

Know how important venue styling is to you. I love the flowers, stationery and place settings, so in an ideal world everyone would allocate a good proportion of their budget to the styling and décor, but for some it’s just not a big deal, so this is an area they’d look to cut back on. If it’s important to you, then be prepared to allocate a reasonable chunk.

Sussex Florals © www.laurenbethphotography.co.uk 68

Be realistic. It’s totally okay to be unsure of what to expect. Ask your suppliers for guideline figures based on the ideas you have in mind, and be prepared to adjust either your brief or your budget if needed. Trust the experts’ advice. We’ll always work with you where possible, but there’s a limit to how much magic our wands can do! If your style ideas are more than your preferred price point, then a planner or the relevant supplier can help you to come up with alternatives that may give a similar aesthetic at a more cost-effective price.

Be honest. When working with your planner or suppliers, always be honest about what you have to spend as it’s important that we know what we’re truly working with so that the design concept is suitable for you.

Don’t forget about hidden costs. Delivery, set up and dismantle fees can often apply when hiring in rental items or for floral setups. Remember you’re not just paying for the product but also for people’s time, so allow for this when budgeting.

CEREMONY TO CELEBRATIONS

So, you’ve decided on your theme and allocated a budget. How can you get the most out of that pot? One way is to utilise your décor from the ceremony in your reception space. Petra Beaton from Sussex Florals tells us more, “The ceremony area and reception area will most likely have the same colour scheme and style so we always recommend repurposing as many of the floral arrangements as possible. One arrangement that’s almost always reused is the ceremony table flowers, the long and low style is still a popular choice and it’s so easy to move over to the top table after the ‘I dos.’

“The aisle decorations can also be moved and we often supply vases for tied chair aisle bunches to be placed into in the reception area, allowing them to be used as centrepieces or to decorate another area like the bar or window sills. Likewise, where we’ve used gorgeous flower-filled lanterns to decorate the aisle, all intertwined with fairy lights, these too can be used for reception tables. All of this ties your theme together perfectly and is also so much more sustainable.”

“Sustainability is something we’re becoming more aware of in all aspects of our lives and it’s definitely filtering through to weddings. I work with my couples to repurpose flowers as much as possible throughout the day, and many are foregoing wedding favours completely to avoid the wastage as they often get left or

thrown away.” – Emily, Weddings by Emily Charlotte

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

WINTER TREAT

How can we give our wedding cake a wintry twist?

Winter weddings can be designed to embrace the stunning array of sensations of the season. Use muted, gentle tones in the decoration like blush pink or ivory paired with deep rich jewel tones such as dark red or ivy green to create a comfy, sheltered feel. If warm colours aren’t your thing, icy blues and greys can be used to create a soft modern design. Alternatively, embrace strong geometric patterns or bold textures with a contemporary monochrome vibe. White on white textures can be very striking and lend themselves beautifully to the season.

Whichever colour angle you go for, adding some glitter and sparkle provides a magical, wintry feel. Incorporating a metallic element like gold or copper can bring a warm, inviting feel, or use silver for a bold frosty kick.

Finally, bring in some winter flavours such as orange or apple, cinnamon, ginger, peppermint, or for the adults, spike a tier with a warming, spicy tipple such as brandy, Grand Marnier or amaretto.

WINTER WARMERS

What are your suggestions for a warming winter wedding feast?

A warming winter wedding feast should be all about comfort and simplicity but most of all sharing. Think bold flavours, and something that’s filling, delicious and moreish. For me, a slow-cooked pulled shoulder of lamb in a rich Moroccan-style sauce with smoked paprika, caramelised onions, chickpeas and wilted spinach, topped off with a minted yoghurt and pomegranate dressing really hits the spot. I love the melt-in-themouth, well-seasoned lamb served alongside a warm chilli spiced cous cous, and chargrilled garlic buttered flatbreads to tear with your guests around the table.

Dessert is easy! A white chocolate, caramelised orange and rosemary bread and butter pudding screams winter flavours and scents, served with cream Anglaise and dairy ice cream.

Serve everything around the table in large bowls for sharing, take as much or as little as you want surrounded by friends and family. Feast... the clue is in the title!

SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY

I’d like to have a bespoke piece of jewellery to wear on my wedding day. Can you make any suggestions as to how it could incorporate our winter theme?

Wedding jewellery is very often costume jewellery, which means it’s made from non-precious materials, like base metals and imitation stones, so you can go all out for your winter theme without worrying whether it will be worn again.

If you want real jewellery that you’ll be able to wear in the future though, you might want to choose something that’s not too weddingy. This depends on your personal style.

When it comes to the winter theme, white metals like silver or platinum have a colder look than yellow gold, and diamonds or white crystals add to that effect. If you’re going for coloured gems, you should be guided by your palette and find something that fits it.

EXPERT ADVICE 73

SET THE SCENE

We’re getting married in January and we’d love some gorgeous couple portraits to treasure, but we’re worried about losing the natural light so early. Are there ways around this?

Winter days being shorter means a little forward thinking is required. While fading light can be challenging, there are a number of ways around this...

It may be that you plan your ceremony for earlier in the day, while the light is more favourable. Bringing your timings forward by just an hour could make a significant difference. You may also choose to use fairylights, candles and even sparklers to bring excitement, atmosphere and importantly, lovely ambient light to your images.

Thinking outside the box a little, how about a first look where you have your couple photo shoot before the ceremony? By doing this you can alleviate any worries, knowing that your formal photos are in the bag regardless of when the sun sets.

Most importantly, you and your photographer need to understand the

THE YOUNG ONES

There will be children of all ages from 0 to 14 at our wedding, how on earth do we keep them all out of trouble?!

A wedding can be a really long day for the little guests. To keep them all busy and entertained we suggest enlisting the help of a crèche company. For example, we at Event Childcare, will set up at your wedding venue with our mobile crèche and activities along with qualified nannies, taking the stress away from you as well as their parents, allowing you all to relax and unwind.

At booking stage we’ll ask you about the ages and numbers of children we’ll be taking care of, and it’s vital this is accurate, as we work within the ratios set out by Ofsted. What’s more, if you mention to your coordinator or planner that you’re looking into hiring nannies, they’ll be able to give you the options of the rooms and spaces available for your crèche company to set up camp.

Some examples of activities include, but are not limited to: bubble machine, bracelet making, tote bag designing, badge making, pebble painting, reading and word games, dress-up box, Lego and Duplo, and toy vehicles. Seasonal crafts such as Easter hat making, bauble painting, Valentine’s card making and Halloween mask painting are also an option. What’s more, if you’re having a themed wedding, let us know and we’ll match our activities to it.

LUXURY BEAUTY LIVE

The Bridal Beauty Festival takes place twiceyearly in the heart of London and features many of the beauty and wellness world’s biggest brands, all there to talk to you about you and your wedding. With live workshops, expert talks, guest appearances and even incredible live music, it’s the place to be if you’re thinking about your big-day look.

I visited the event in September at the luxurious Rosewood London and it was packed with plenty of my favourite brands. On the beauty and cosmetics side there were such titans as Charlotte Tilbury, Pixi, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown, while Penhaligons and The Wedding Scent Edit were on hand to talk big-day fragrances. The latter showcased an impressive array of highend perfumes from brands such as Juliette has a gun Parfums, Parle Moi De Parfum, Atelier Materi, Maison Crivelli and Mizensir. They were arranged in an inspired edit according to your wedding day vibe, be it elegant, beach, boho and more. I took home a sample of Une Tonne De Roses by Parle Moi De Parfum and have been receiving complements every time I wear it – highly recommended. In fact, I’m a huge fan of floral fragrances and also fell in love with Penhaligons’ Elisabethan Rose.

Experts were on hand from each brand offering complimentary makeovers, trials and tips for those with questions. I couldn’t tear myself away from the programme of talks taking place throughout the day. These included A Pixi Perfect Glowing Bridal Masterclass, Bridal Scenting with Carolina Herrera, Create a Radiant Wedding-Day Look with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, and Beauty Complex: Skin, Hair and Nails with Dr Anita. I learnt a thing or two myself! My top tip gathered on the day was to always look down into a mirror when applying mascara. You’ll catch more of your lashes and are far less likely to get product all over your eyelid.

Check out the video above for some masterclass inspiration from Carolina Herrera and Bobbi Brown, and look out for the super-stylish customisable lipsticks from the new Caroline Herrera make-up range. You can choose your own cap design, bangle, charm and tassel for the ultimate wedding-day handbag accessory for on-the-day touch ups.

The next Bridal Beauty Festival is due to take place in October 2023, so keep an eye on the website for tickets to this must-visit event, www.thebridalbeautyfestival.com

PEEL POWER

Dr. Craft launched its sustainable mandarin skincare range recently and what makes this a world first is the use of mandarin peel. There’s currently no commercial use for it meaning 10 million tonnes are incinerated and wasted annually. However, the range’s creator, Professor Richard Blackburn, an expert in green chemistry, has been able to harvest the peel’s extract and produce this exciting range of products including the Soothing Cream Cleanser (£18), Gentle Brightening Exfoliator (£20), Purifying Toning Mist (£18), and Antioxidant Rescue Serum (£26). Bioflavonoid ingredients promote skin repair, soothe the complexion and have anti-inflammatory benefits. They also prevent oxidative stress, a type of environmental skin damage caused by pollution and UV rays. Find out more at https://drcraft.co.uk

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and the first line of defence from environmental threats and lifestyle stress, but its barrier is a delicate balance of natural lipids, which without care, can become compromised. The new Body Cleanser contains an innovative formula that’s been five years in development. Created for dry or dehydrated skin, it’s soap and sulphate-free and features a complex of five mild surfactants, derived from sugar, amino acids and responsibly-sourced coconut and palm. A RESTORATIVE SLEEP

It’s a well-know fact when it comes to skin that sleep is a great beauty ally, but did you know this also applies to our hair? During the night, the release of the hormone melatonin allows our tresses, as well as our skin, to regenerate. Consequently, its in ideal condition to receive a stronger dose of nutrition than during the day and so your night-time routine is essential.

Christophe Robin has developed a new nighttime ritual composed of two treatments targeting different types of damaged hair: The Night Recovery Cream with White Lotus Flower formulated for fine to medium damaged hair, and the Night Recover Monoi with White Lotus Flower for medium to thick damaged hair. Apply to dry, freshly brushed locks before you going to bed, working in sections from root to end. Wrap, leave overnight and rinse and shampoo in the morning, by which time the beauty of your hair, deeply nourished, is revealed. £35, www.christopherobin.com

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

After agriculture the beauty industry uses the most water. On average a bottle of shampoo contains 70 per cent water with around 90 per cent in conditioner. So, pioneering new beauty brand We Are Concentrate is on a mission to create sustainable and essential products using as little water and plastic as possible. No water is added to the production process and with only a marble-sized amount needed per hair wash, these concentrated pastes contain all the actives and benefits of traditional haircare products, without any of the added water. Plus, to make sure nothing goes to waste, the tubes can be paired with a squeezer and shower hanger to ensure every last drop is used. BRIDAL HAIR SPECIAL

Anne Matthews from Sussex-based The Bridal Hair Company shares her expertise

With a decade in business as the Bridal Hair Company (https://bridalhaircompany.co.uk), Anne Matthews’ styles vary from glamorous to boho and plenty in between. She works predominantly with smaller wedding parties consisting of the bride and up to three bridesmaids, but also has a team of hair and make-up artists to call in for bigger bride tribes. “What I hope to achieve is for me to work together with the bride-to-be during her hair trial and interpret her vision of how she’d like to look on her wedding day,” she says.

Now, Anne has collaborated with a team of fellow wedding experts to create this stunning Rococo-inspired styled shoot with delicate, muted tones and bridal embellishments. Here, she offers a wealth of hair-spiration and tells us how she achieved these looks.

In this look my model’s hair is yet to be brushed out. Her locks have been tonged into barrel curls and set with pin-curl clips.

To create the waves, start combing hair into a side parting, then use a paddle brush. You’ll need to brush for much longer than you expect. Continue brushing until you see the sleek waves start to appear and complete the look with a decorative hair accessory.

TOP TREND

“My top bridal trend for 2023 has to be the glamorous Hollywood waves with a modern twist. Not too structured and moving away from the vintage look.”

87 BEAUTY SHOOT

I used padding to create fullness in this textured low bun, which is a style popular with brides and bridesmaids. You can also add a braid and some decorative hand-sculpted clay flowers.

These beautiful padded headbands are going to be on trend for 2023 brides. They can be custom-made using pearls and beaded floral materials. With the hair sleek and worn off the face you’re sure to make an entrance to remember.

ANNE’S TOP TIP

“Once you’ve chosen your dress, venue and wedding theme, spend some time looking at hairstyles on Pinterest. Once you have a selection you like, find a bridal hair stylist, and bear in mind many get booked up fast, so don’t delay! Look through at least six websites, this will help you find the right artist for your big day.”

Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

BOHO VIBES

I’m going for a relaxed boho vibe for my wedding. What make-up look would be most fitting?

Claire says: A feel of effortlessness is key. Keep the foundation minimal – MAC Face & Body is a great water-based foundation that gives just enough coverage and still leaves your complexion looking like skin.

Forget fussy contouring, instead gently sculpt the face with bronzer. This technique is known as brontouring. MAC Harmony is a great shade for this as it’s cool-toned with a hint of warmth.

Replace complicated eye-shading with a wash of peachy shimmer. Charlotte Tilbury Eyes to Mesmerise in rose gold is a great option. Instead of precision liner, go for a smoked-out wing using Charlotte Tilbury Rock ‘n’ Kohl Liner in Barbarella Brown. Fluffy brows are great for a boho vibe too, so brush a little Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Freeze through, plus NYX Microbrow in your shade to add any individual hair strokes needed.

Warm up the cheeks with Glossier Cloud Paint in shade Beam for a flushed-from-within glow. Then, on the lips, keep it unfussy and neutral in a natural, peachy shade. We love MAC Lip Pencil in Whirl with a slick of MAC Lipglass in clear. Add a few individual lashes and mascara and go party!

WINTER WISDOM

I’m planning a winter wedding and need some ideas for my bridal hair and make-up look. Can you help? Is there anything I need to bear in mind given the season?

Alison says: I love a winter wedding and the changes it brings in hair and make-up. Will you be getting ready at the venue or will you be travelling between locations? I’d recommend an up-do if you’re venturing outside, ensuring your hair stays in tip-top condition and in place all day. If you’re wearing a cape or jacket over your dress, choose a hairstyle that won’t get damaged by rubbing against the collar. I love sparkle in the hair for a winter bride but if flowers are your preference, choose winter blooms that will survive cold temperatures without wilting.

The winter air can make hair dry and dull, so ask your hairdresser about a glossing treatment ahead of your wedding day or use deep conditioning masks at home. Likewise, cold weather and central heating can contribute to dry skin and chapped lips so start a good skincare regime and drink plenty of water to keep it hydrated. Invest in a good moisturiser for your skin type and gently exfoliate once a week to get rid of dead cells. Use a lip scrub a couple of times a week along with a nourishing lip balm every day.

As more of your day will be in artificial light at this time of year, I recommend slightly stronger make-up for my winter brides. Keep skin dewy and luminous with a light-reflecting foundation, cream-based blusher and highlighter. I love a stronger lip colour too in the winter and just a touch of soft bronzing to warm the skin.

Relaxation-on-sea

A restful mini-moon awaits at The Beachcroft Hotel’s Beach Hut Suites on Felpham seafront

Occupying a prime position on Felpham’s seafront, among the West Sussex South Downs, The Beachcroft Hotel’s Beach Hut Suites offer all the British seaside charm you could wish for along with a particularly healthy dose of pure luxury. Situated on a seven-mile coastal footpath, the local area boasts secluded beaches, award-winning seafront with Grade II listed pier and green-flag parks. A stone’s throw from Bognor Regis, Felpham is the Yin to its neighbour’s Yang. A delightful Sussex village it’s every bit as quiet and relaxing as Bognor is bustling and vibrant. Your Sussex Wedding editor Kelly Andrews spent two nights in Beach Hut Suite Pebble, and here she shares the one-of-a-kind experience that might await you as mini-mooners.

COME ON IN

Having arrived at The Beachcroft Hotel, tucked away on a quiet residential street, just after nightfall, I popped into reception to check in. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and already I felt like a valued guest. The Beach Hut Suites are located a mere hop, skip and a jump from the Hotel just opposite, and have their own little car park with each Hut allocated a space, so there’s no trekking across the street with luggage.

The four Beach Hut Suites have each been given a cute seasideinspired name – we were welcomed to Pebble. But regardless of which one you’re allocated, you’ll find a stylish lounge area, its own terrace overlooking the pebble beach, a mezzanine master bedroom, and for those who want to bring the kids there’s a small bunk bedroom. The latter was the first room we encountered as we entered complete with buckets,

spades and activity sheets already laid out on the beds. The team here really have thought of everything, more on that later. Next was the bathroom with the necessary facilities, plus rainfall shower, and light-up mirror, excellent for those of us who need good lighting to do our makeup in the mornings!

It wasn’t until the next morning though, that we were able to fully appreciate the view from the bi-folding glass door, which spans most of the Hut’s width. In fact as I pulled the curtains open my breath was taken away – “wow!” I’m from the seaside myself, so can be a little blasé about sea views, but this was truly idyllic. With the rising sun glistening on the water and the beach right there in front of me, I hadn’t appreciated just how close we were until then. The hut’s little patio complete with loungers is the perfect place to take it all in. Despite it being mid-October, we were determined to make the most of the setting, immediately folding back the door and keeping it that way all day as we listened to the waves and took in the refreshing sea air. Eventually, the sun set and the temperature dropped, but we were still comfortable once we’d bid goodnight to the view and drawn the curtains thanks to the Hut’s ultra-modern underfloor heating.

Here, in this home away from home you’ll find plenty of comforts and treats to make your stay special from the chilled bottle of rose in the oh-so chic Smeg fridge (which I enjoyed while watching Strictly) and a decanter of sloe gin, to yoga mats and complimentary toiletries. I particularly fell in love with all the quirky finishing touches such as the local artwork and giant champagne cork bedside tables. If all you want to do is kick back there’s a good Wi-Fi connection plus a Netflix-connected TV so, put your feet up and enjoy your favourite shows curled up together on the sofa with the provided blankets.

TO DINE FOR

One night we headed over to The Beachcroft Hotel and Tamarisk Restaurant to enjoy a three-course meal. I cannot overstate how impressed I was with the food here! The welcoming family-eatery feel of the dining room only hinted at the culinary excellence that would be served. Head chef Damian Czerny has an array of experience working in kitchens across the continent, and it’s easy to see his passion and enthusiasm through his food. Not for the first time during our stay I uttered a, “wow,” as our main courses arrived. I had opted for chicken ballotine stuffed with smoked pancetta, spinach and fresh sage, which was absolutely delicious. Mum chose the fillet of lamb with garlic roasted new potatoes, pea and mint puree, grilled shallots, and a red wine jus; and commented that she’d never tasted lamb so perfectly cooked.

We’d decided to have a breakfast hamper delivered to the hut for the following morning, which arrived promptly at 8.30am as requested. I

92

was super-excited to unveil its contents. Among the gingham there was a platter of croissants, pain au chocolat, cheese, ham, jam and butter; along with fruit salad, yoghurt, orange juice and flasks of tea and coffee. It was wonderful to enjoy the indulgent treat that is a hotel breakfast, while relaxing in the privacy of your own space and of course, that view.

Still reluctant to remove ourselves from the comfortable luxury of the hut’s lounge, we also had a lunch hamper delivered. Equally as delicious as its breakfast counterpart, this included a fruit platter, artisan bread rolls, an incredible smoked mackerel pate, ham, cheese, and a Mediterranean salad of olives and sun-dried tomatoes. The food was accompanied by two mini bottles of prosecco and orange juice, so we decided to make bucks fizz!

Even if you were to spend several nights here you could choose to dine differently for every one. Apart from the incredible Tamarisk Restaurant in the main hotel, there’s also the outdoor garden terrace, Blake’s, which features dining pods, and Monty’s Bistro too. What’s more, there’s the option to order freshly-prepared and boxed-up fish and chips to enjoy on the terrace or back at the hut.

Before heading off we enjoyed breakfast over at the hotel on our final morning. Here, we found a mouthwatering continental breakfast spread, while hot food was available to order. Mum was equally complimentary about her porridge as she was her lamb on the first night and I tucked into a full English breakfast, which the friendly staff are patient enough to allow you to tailor to you own tastes.

OUT AND ABOUT

If, like us, you decide to stay cocooned in the comfort of your Beach Hut Suite, you’re sure to find you have everything you need and more, but if you’d rather get out and about there’s plenty to do...

The hotel offers a personally-curated walking guide allowing you to explore the beautiful region to the fullest.

Each hut has a guide to West Sussex, so it’s easy to find out more about the local attractions and places of interest.

Head out to the beach for a spot of beach-combing for treasures or shell picking. 

Neighbouring Pagham Harbour biological and geological site is one of the best places for bird watching. You’re likely to spot black-tailed godwits, brent geese, little egrets, little turns and pintails. Dolphins have also been seen close to the shoreline.

Hire paddle boards.

Adult bicycles are included as part of your stay in a Beach Hut Suite.

Visit nearby Tinwood Estate for wine tasting and vineyard tours.

Check out Goodwood for horse and motor racing.

For a spot of history head to nearby Arundel Castle.

NEED TO KNOW

The Beach Hut Suites are part of The Beachcroft Hotel, so rates include breakfast, and room service is available.

The huts and hotel are dog friendly, so if you want to take your fur baby with you, check out the Doggy Getaway break under the Stay tab on the website.

Gather the bride tribe and book The Penthouse with its three bedrooms sleeping six, large lounge, and dining area with floorto-ceiling windows looking out to sea. It’s an ideal base for a hen do getaway.

REVIEW 93

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.
