THE WALLED GARDEN

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours.

Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place.

Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats.

EVENTS ARENA

At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away.

Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn.

Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Best day ever!

After months, even years, of reading my excited babble about our dear CWM colleague Melissa’s wedding day, you may be relieved to hear that it finally happened, and what a day it was! I’ll leave the storytelling to the bride herself, as you can read all about it from page 90, but I would like to impart a little of my own bridesmaid’s wisdom centred around the morning preparations. These moments were the highlight for me, and it’s a part of the day often overlooked amongst the hubbub of wedding planning, so…

 Be as organised as you possibly can in the lead up. This way, you’ll have very little to worry about on the day. Admittedly, Melissa’s abilities in this area are superhuman, but knowing we weren’t allowed into the venue to set up until 10am she’d put together individual boxes containing everything each reception table needed. All we had to do when we arrived was unpack them in the right place. We were done in no time, stress free and ready to be beautified.

 When you have your trial, be sure to discuss with your hair and make-up artists the morning’s timings. Understanding whether there’ll be any travel time to the ceremony involved; or restrictions such as when you’re allowed entry to the venue, if you’re getting ready there, will help them work out where they should be up to and when. Melissa’s team had everything running like clockwork in a very tight time frame.

 Enjoy every moment. I can’t explain how special these few hours spent with our bride were. Chaotic and gone in a flash, but oh-so precious. I spent a significant proportion of it in tears and I could probably count the number of times I’ve happy cried prior to this on one hand! As we waited for Melissa to be called in to see the registrar, only the four of us remained in the cottage, and a hush descended for the first time that day as the bride centred herself and absorbed the enormity of what was about to happen. I swear I’ll never forget that time, my heart nearly beat right out of my chest with love for my amazing friends.

My point is this: devote some of your planning time to the morning preparations and when your photographer offers you the option of capturing them, take them up on it. You won’t regret it, promise.

Now, while I leave you and mull over what on Earth I’m going to regale you with now the wedding is over, I hope you enjoy this issue. It’s bursting at the seams with inspiration! We’ve taken a look into the world of wedding entertainment, and put together an indispensable A to Z guide to dress shopping not to be missed.

Enjoy and keeeep planning!

We're delighted to announce some local interest as Sarah Parham of Sussex-based ring brand SVP Jewellery has been awarded Commercial Jewellery Designer of the Year.

With 21 targeted categories, the awards cover every aspect of the industry, from jewellery design and ethical business practice through to customer service and successful retailing. Ruth Faulkner, editor of Retail Jeweller, the event’s organiser, says, “We received a record number of entries for this year’s event and our judging panel had an incredibly difficult task deciding on the eventual winners. Congratulations must go to all of our shorlisted finalists and, of course, our winners. They must be applauded as the leading lights in our sector and really are the very best in the business.

CHEERS!

The UK’s largest specialist wine retailer, Majestic, is opening a new store in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. Situated in the heartlands of English sparkling wine production and with domestic vineyard visits on the rise, the new store is expected to see record sales of homegrown fizz sold within its first weekend alone.

The area is already home to some of the leading names in English wine including Nytimber and Bolney, both of which will be stocked at the new Majestic store. Interest in visiting English vineyards has boomed over recent years and more and more holidaymakers are choosing to visit as part of their staycations. So much so in fact that AirBnB recently added a vineyard category to its website.

Majestic provides all of its new colleagues with WSET qualifications as one of Europe’s largest wine educators, ensuring they have the expertise in wine that sets the brand’s shopping experience apart. So, if you’re looking for advice on the perfect wine for your big day, why not head over there and check it out? You can also find Majestic online at www.majestic.co.uk

VIRTUAL ART

Alice and John at The Paint Club have been busy running hen parties over the summer, and are delighted to see everything opening up with people willing and able to meet in person once more following the Covid lockdowns of the past couple of years. Able to run their arty hen parties at any venue of your choice, John tells us, “I’ve seen some amazing AirBnBs around the country recently!” However, if there’s one thing adapting to the pandemic taught them it’s the value of the hybrid event with virtual options still offered for those friends and family who can’t get together. With this latest offering, those who can’t make it are simply sent a painting kit and they can follow along with the live instruction virtually either from one of the artists or as a pre-recorded video in cases where the whole event is virtual. So, even if you wish to invite loved ones on the other side of the world, distance needn’t be a hindrance as these hybrid painting parties still allow you all to get together and have a fab time.

The perfect creative activity to add to a hen do, the team at The Paint Club will bring (or send) everything you need to paint a masterpiece, whether its in your AirBnB, home or local pub. Choose your painting or surprise the bride with a custom design and the team will take care of the rest. With your favourite drink in one hand, paint

brush in the other, a professional artist will guide you through the artwork step by step.

HEN DO HOT SPOT

Getting your nearest and dearest together for a hen party can be challenging and pairing that with a cost-of-living crisis might mean you’re looking to celebrate a little closer to home. So, hen party decoration supplier Ginger Ray has done a little digging to find you the top 19 UK cities to host your pre-wedding girls trip and it may delight you to know that you don’t have far to travel for the very best!

Based on an overall ranking of cities providing the most options for a memorable stay, according to Trip Advisor data, considering everything from bottomless brunches and spa treatments to availability of the hugely popular Whispering Angel wine, our beloved Brighton came out in second place just behind Bath. With an impressive 587 group activities on offer there’ll never be a dull moment and given the strong showing in categories such as restaurants with brunch options, accessibility, spots with outdoor heating, vegan options and a good bar scene, everyone in your group should be guaranteed a fun, and above all, comfortable time.

Jess Martin, decoration expert at Ginger Ray says, “It’s surprising to see how the different cities ranked, with some unexpected ones such as London and Manchester towards the bottom of the list. While the bride is the main focus of your hen party, so many people are involved in making it special so it’s really important to factor this into your planning, whether it’s dietary needs or accessibility. The index is also a great way to scope out which city suits your group’s vibe, whether it be outdoor activities or bars and restaurants. Making sure the place you visit is the best for those preferences will ensure there’s no disappointment among the group.”

So, there you have it. In case there was ever any doubt, here’s the proof: Brighton is the place to be!

They’ll be out and about this autumn with stands at various wedding shows around the county, so if you can’t make it along to the venue, be sure to catch them for a chat at The West Sussex Wedding Fayre, Horsham on Sunday20th November.

From your first point of contact through to the day itself, you’ll be able to rest assured knowing that your very own wedding coordinator will be taking care of every detail, whether you’ve opted for a traditional reception, civil ceremony or partnership.

FIVE MINUTES WITH...

Debbie Vickers from Chopperwhoppers

Tell us about yourself

I’m Debbie, single mum of three and cabin manager for a well-known airline. I discovered rolled ice cream while on a trip in Thailand back in 2015. I heard a loud chopping noise and saw a gathering of people watching a local lady create ice cream rolls right there in front of us using a cold plate, fresh mango and condensed milk. I was in awe. I’d never seen anything like it in my travels during my flying career. I chose a mango and banana one and watched eagerly as she worked her magic. It was all very theatrical and beautifully presented. The taste was astonishing, so light and fresh, unlike anything I’d had before. I knew then that I had to bring this new creative idea back to the UK. Back home I started researching suppliers of the ice pan machines, created a logo, and then dreamt up the name of my new venture… Chopperwhoppers.

Rolled ice cream is new to us! What makes it different to the ice cream we usually get?

Rolled ice cream is so different from the usual soft or scoop ice cream, because you actually watch it being made. It doesn’t get any fresher than that. No nasty ice crystals and no deep freezing for months on end.

The ice pans freeze the ingredients super-quick. The mixture is then spread out in a thin layer over the pan, which usually is set at around -30. Once it’s set it’s then carefully teased off the pan using the chopping spatula – et voila, the ice cream rolls are made. They’re placed upright into a tub and look like flowers, so pretty.

What can you offer couples for their wedding?

As rolled ice cream is so unusual it makes a memorable addition to a wedding. It really brings that extra something, that wow factor. Newlyweds can even try their hand at creating it too, providing a great photo opportunity.

We offer unlimited flavour combinations, three or four of which are chosen and can be mixed and matched. Flavours vary from delicious local seasonal fruits or your favourite indulgent chocolate, all with unlimited serving options. If you fancy a tipple in your ice cream rolls, we can offer that too. Baileys works really well with smooth

throw-away mentality that unfortunately still exists within the wedding industry and become aware of alternative ways of styling. By hiring from us you can be sure items will be loved and used time and time again. You certainly won’t find any plastic or disposable items here!”

white chocolate. Of course, it goes without saying that we can also offer vegan alternatives, which taste amazing too.

Our toppings table has been remodelled and now offers lots of goodies to adorn your tubs of ice cream rolls – from mini marshmallows, crushed nuts to creamy fudge pieces. Not forgetting those sprinkles that the children love.

There are various packages available for smaller weddings of 40 guests using just one ice pan, right up to 1,000 guests using four ice pans. All come with the same bespoke, quality, personal and professional service.

BRIGHTON Spotlight on...

We think Brighton is a blooming marvellous place to tie the knot, so check out our whys and wheres

One of Sussex’s most iconic gems, Brighton is a living, breathing juxtaposition of historical and modern, traditional and quirky. Its inherent character, diversity and joie de vivre make it a must-see spot, so it’s no wonder more than nine-and-a-half million visitors descend each and every year. Even George IV was well aware of its charms having fallen in love with the place and had his holiday home built there in the 18th century – The Royal Pavilion. We’re lucky to have this seaside jewel on our doorstep, and whether you have traditional or alternative nuptials in mind, Brighton has plenty to offer.

THINGS TO DO

If you have guests visiting from all over, there won’t be a dull moment for them if they choose to stay in town beyond your big day.

Spend a day shopping in The Lanes

Soak in some history at The Royal Pavilion

Hit the arcades on the Palace Pier

Enjoy the views from the British Airways i360

You can bring your fur-baby. In a study conducted by tails.com Brighton ranked third in a list of top dog-friendly staycation spots.

Something blue

Zoe and Harry’s wonderfully personalised big day was styled in blue hues with a nod to their love of travel Images courtesy of Will Fuller Photography

30

Having moved with his family down to Sussex from London, Harry joined the local sixth form, which Zoe already attended. He was soon cajoled into a night out by his new friend Duncan, and that’s where he met Zoe. “One thing lead to another and now, 10 years later, we’re married,” she says. “We’ve always just enjoyed each other’s company and we often say to each other that we just love doing life together.”

Harry proposed by the lake in the grounds of Villa Melzi, a botanical garden in Bellagio, Lake Como. The couple share a mutual love of the song September by Earth, Wind and Fire, which they routinely played at university parties, and if you’re familiar with the lyrics, you’ll immediately know the date Harry chose to pop the question! Although they’re terrible at managing to pull off surprises for each other, unbeknownst to Zoe, Harry had managed to fly out his step dad and wedding photographer, James, to capture the moment.

Zoe is a home girl, so getting married in her beloved East Sussex was important to her. Wadhurst Castle was hosting a wedding fair shortly after the pair became engaged, so they popped in to look around and practically booked it on the spot! “We met Susan, our venue coordinator that day and knew this was the place for us. We didn’t need to see any others. It overlooks the East Sussex countryside where we spend so much time taking long walks together.” So, the date was set for their 10th anniversary, 26th May 2022. Join us as the newlyweds tell us more...

LOOKING THE PART

The beautiful bride wore India by Madi Lane, a beautiful figurehugging boho-style gown. “I could move and cuddle all my favourite people in it without feeling restricted,” she remembers. It wasn’t a style she’d imagined herself going for, but knew it was the one when she tried it on and felt incredible. “I was so worried Harry wouldn’t like it as it was very lacy, but I thought he was going to fall over when he saw me,” Zoe continues.

Harry wore a blue three-piece suit with a tie colour-matched to the bridesmaids’ dresses. “Who knew how difficult that was going to be to find?!” Zoe remembers. The groomsmen were dressed to match, while bridesmaids wore blue dresses. The flowergirl looked super-cute in a cardigan bearing her nickname, Squidge, paired with a blue tutu.

SETTING THE SCENE

Zoe and Harry settled on a clever something blue theme and set about designing their big day to reflect this. The styling also featured a nod to their favourite pastime, travel, so they chose aeroplaneshaped bottle openers in mini suitcases as wedding favours, which they placed on the entrance table.

The table plan, welcome signs, order of the day and a sign illustrating their love story were all designed to match with their names and wedding date on the bottom. They chose a bold black font that would stand out against the colourful flowers and used the same one throughout the remaining décor. Since there were only 28 guests, the duo decided on one long banquet-style table. But, Zoe remembers, “Arranging the seating plan took more thought than we’d imagined.” The place names were carved from wood and painted black. They sat on top of personalised menus that the couple had made to remind guests of their meal choices.

Zoe adores flowers and had a vision of beautiful blooms lining

the entire centre of the wedding breakfast table, rather than individual centrepieces. “I was speechless when I saw how beautiful the wedding breakfast setup was. My dad and Harry spent hours the previous day making a fairylight canopy above the table and it looked incredible – so much better than I had ever envisioned,” the bride shares.

The florist was briefed to create the floral displays in a wild and relaxed style. Peonies are Zoe’s favourite flowers, so all the bouquets included these and the couple’s little niece had one to carry down the aisle. Zoe says, “The flowers were our biggest expense after the venue hire as they just bring me so much joy, so I wanted them everywhere. It was the element Harry let me run away with and I did just that! They were worth every single penny. Afterwards, our family collected them up and donated them to the local hospice to decorate the patients’ rooms.”

The big-day bake was a semi-naked three-tier showstopper featuring their favourite flavours. It was decorated with flowers to complement the arrangements as well as bride and groom moose models as a nod to their nickname for each other. The table it stood on was draped in blue chiffon to suit the wedding’s palette. They also hired a huge flower wall to serve as a backdrop, complete with neon sign.

The entrance hall was adorned in large prints of world maps and photos from the couple’s travels. Along with the globe guest book was a postcard wall for guests to add their bucket lists of ideas to.

Harry is a lifelong McLaren fan and former employee, so his close friend and groomsman, Alexis, drove him to the venue in a 765LT Spider.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

A sit-down three-course meal was served for the wedding breakfast and the couple supplied wine complete with personalised labels, along with guests’ favourite drinks. The kettle never goes cold in Zoe and Harry’s house, so they decided to have a tea round after the wedding breakfast, served in Mr and Mrs Neale mugs and for guests, mugs bearing tea-related phrases. There was also a teacake tower and personalised newspapers saying: “spill the tea!”

In the evening the hog roast, pizza van and ice cream van all proved popular.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

A string quartet played during he ceremony. The jazz band hired to entertain during the wedding breakfast was a nod to one of the duo’s favourite nights ever – “Feeling utterly content in a dark cosy corner of a jazz club in Budapest,” Zoe says.

The couple laid out a selection of carnival-themed games in the walled garden. One of their first dates was spent at a carnival, so they chose the classics like a coconut shy and hook-a-duck. They also made sofas out of hay bales, so guests could watch each other play mini golf, along with a brilliant caricaturist and live painter.

The DJ was a retired professional dancer and taught Zoe and Harry their first dance routine. The wedding breakfast table was moved away allowing them to enjoy it beneath the fairylight canopy. “Even I, who will normally avoid dancing at all costs, felt utterly at home in Zoe’s arms,” Harry remembers.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“I’d honestly never felt so nervous in my life,” Harry says. “I never cry, but I was overcome by emotion and a couple of tears did escape as I stood at the front looking at my stunning soon-to-be wife. I couldn’t believe my luck that I was marrying my dream girl. There was a feeling of utter contentment and relief as we

“You really don’t need to please anyone else by yourselves. Our wedding was exactly what we’d envisioned and was the perfect day.” – Zoe

walked back up the aisle through the confetti and saw all the smiling faces of our loved ones.”

Zoe remembers, “I was so excited to get down the aisle to see Harry. I didn’t feel an ounce of nerves, I was just so ready. I’m such a planner, so I knew everything was under control thanks to my brilliant bridesmaids. I’ll never forget Harry’s face when he saw me. I was just so happy the entire day and it shines through in the photographs.”

The newlyweds shared a pizza on the venue steps towards the end of the evening and lit number 10 candles to commemorate their 10th anniversary together. “I have a framed picture of us scoffing pizza the night we got engaged, so it felt just right to be sharing one on our wedding day.”

Zoe’s dad had a bottle of champagne that he bought the day she was born and kept it to give to her on her wedding day. They set up a champagne coupe tower to pour it into and raise a toast together. However, as it turns out 26-year-old bubbly doesn’t always age so well and it came out a worrying brown colour. “You can see from the photos how it tasted,” Zoe laughs.

A MODERN

classic

Jen and Mike tied the knot at Pelham House in April 2022 after falling head-over-heels in love with the venue

Images courtesy of N Davies Photography

Jen and Mike met at a party when they were 17. A mutual friend who brought Mike along made the pair switch numbers at the end of the night and by the following week, their first date was in the diary – a picnic on the college field. So keen was Jen to see Mike again that she skipped a lesson to meet him during his free period. This obviously wasn’t something she was used to doing as her lecturer quickly found her and brought her back to his lesson!

Mike proposed during the first lockdown. He’d bought the ring in readiness to pop the question on their 11-year anniversary in April, but annoyingly Covid had other ideas. At the time, restrictions did at least

permit dog walks, so Mike suggested they changed their daily route from Polegate to Eastbourne Beach and it was there that Mike got down on one knee with fur-baby Fletcher looking on.

“As soon as we walked into the Blencowe Room at Pelham House we fell in love with the high ceilings and flooring as well as its elegance and simplicity,” Jen says. The garden bar was Mike’s favourite spot as it had a 1920s Great Gatsby vibe. “The Goring Room was exactly what we wanted for the ceremony and I loved how open and light it felt – so beautiful,” Jen continues. So, with the venue decided upon, the date was set for 15th April, 2022. Here, the bride tells us all about the big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 35

We had a stunning balloon arch at the end of the aisle behind the registrar’s table. This was later moved to provide a backdrop for the top table, before being used to frame the guest book signing area. It was so versatile and we couldn’t have loved it more!

We’ve been together for 13 years, so there were no nerves around becoming married, more for the ceremony and formalities, in particular walking down the aisle for me. I did mess up my words, but that actually made me relax!

Mike wanted to wear tweed, but knew it might be too warm for April, so he opted for a checked navy and mustard suit with tweed-style waistcoat. The suit was custom-made and Mike chose the lining then had our names and wedding date embroidered on it. The groomsmen wore the same suit as the groom but with a matching waistcoat. They also wore rust ties and pocket squares. Mike gifted his best man and groomsmen monogrammed cufflinks and tie pin.

I was apprehensive about shopping for a wedding dress, as I’d envisioned only finding big ballgowns, but I looked online and was surprised to find a huge range. My dress was a modern classic A-line with a fitted top. I wanted to be able to eat and drink without worrying about how my tummy looked!

I wore a cathedral-length veil that belonged to my maid-of-honour as my something borrowed, and added a bow with small diamantés. I’d also fallen in love with a tulle belt and bow, but didn’t want to wear both at the same time and overload on bows, so I wore it in the evening when the veil came off.

My maids-of-honour wore A-line, beige tulle dresses to complement my gown. The top had lace beaded detailing.

36

The venue looked so beautiful I couldn’t get over it, and the weather was perfect, which highlighted how amazing the garden and decorations were. The team at Pelham House went above and beyond to give us our perfect day, we can’t fault them.

The centrepieces were gold lanterns filled with flowers and rose petals were scattered on the tables. We also decorated with small jars containing string lights and others holding selfie props. We thought the latter would be fun for photos and help break the ice when people sat down.

We didn’t have a cake to cut as it’s just not our thing, but we had a sweetie table in the evening complete with pick ‘n’ mix, which went down very well.

Our flowers were white, cream and blush with lots of greenery, as I wanted them to have a modern look. We had a spray for the registrar’s table, which we moved to the top table for the wedding breakfast.

We enjoyed a wide variety of canapés including vegan and vegetarian options such as butternut and cauliflower fritter with coconut and lemon salsa. Other options included sausage, onion rings and chips, and Thai chicken with sweet chilli glaze.

37 REAL WEDDINGS
“It was the day I’d always dreamed of and more.”

LOVE letters provided by the venue illuminated one side of the room, while a MR & MRS sign from Twilite lit up the other.

I created playlists for when we had photos and canapés as well as for the wedding breakfast. We had a DJ for the evening and people loved that they could make requests and shout outs. We gave guests the opportunity to help compile the playlist via the RSVPs.

The wedding breakfast was incredible and it too offered both vegan and meat options. We also had a surprise course, which was amazing – it was lemon sorbet served on dry ice with a vodka shot in a pipette. It was a real moment when it came out, people gasped!

THE BRIDE’S TOP TIPS

Prioritise what’s most important to you and work out what you’re happy to let go of.

Don’t act on impulse, think things through.

Think about what you want rather than what other people have had, or what’s traditional. We didn’t have a cake or wedding favours and didn’t regret it.

Don’t stress about where guests will park or stay... they’ll work it out!

Don’t sweat the small stuff on the day.

Make sure you and your partner have time together on the big day, as it goes so quickly.

Fill your day with everything and everyone you love and you can’t go wrong.

Splurging on a videographer as well as a photographer is so worth it for priceless clips of family and friends, along with unseen moments that you wouldn’t otherwise see

WE do!

Stephanie and Harry said “I do” at The Ravenswood in May, 2022 Images courtesy of John Scofield Photography

Stephanie and Harry met through a mutual friend more than a decade ago. “We’re both very laid back and family orientated, which is why I think we instantly clicked,” Stephanie tells us. Harry proposed while away on holiday with friends in the New Forest. The couple are keen runners and Harry suggested they go out for a jog in the forest one morning. Along the way he stopped, supposedly to to tie his shoe laces, but instead he was getting down on one knee to

pop the question. “It was such a beautiful spot and a special moment,” Stephanie remembers.

Stephanie went to view The Ravenswood one evening with her mum and mother-in-law and instantly fell in love with it. “The grounds were beautiful and I loved that we’d have sole use of the venue on the day with options if the weather took a turn for the worse,” Stephanie shares. Read on as the bride tells us more about the big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 41

My nan read a poem during the ceremony that she’d written. It meant a lot to us.

I fell in love with my Essense of Australia dress, Lavender. It seemed to be meant for me as it matched the wedding’s colour theme. It was beautifully detailed with a stunning train. I always knew I’d have a fitted dress.

Harry was dressed in a navy check suit. He wanted to stand out from the groomsmen so he decided to wear a different tie and a waistcoat. He also wore my late grandad’s pocket watch, which he’d always told Harry he could wear for the wedding.

The groomsmen wore the same suits as Harry without the waistcoat. They accessorised with a gold, textured tie to complement the suit lining and Harry’s own tie, which had gold embroidery on it.

The bridesmaids wore dusky lilac multiway dresses. I was drawn to them asthese meant the ladies were able to wear them in the style they each felt mostcomfortable in. There were so many options to choose from that it was ahard decision on the day, but we got there in the end and they alllooked stunning.

Our favours were scratch cards with a chance to win a drink on us.

42

Our table plan was written out on a large, ornate mirror. It took a longtime to make, but it looked lovely and is something we can keep. Our floristdecorated it with fresh flowers.

Our centrepieces were bowls filled with decorative crystals and a candle. Green and lilac wreaths were wrapped around them.

Our floral arrangements featured lilac, pink, and purple blooms with foliage. We went for a meadow style so that they looked less structured and more natural.

Place names were scribed on sage green card to complement the foliage. The tables were numbered and printed on card with eucalyptus to match the colour palette.

Each of our cake’s three tiers was flavoured differently. It was adornedwith flowers and a cake topper featuring our initials.

Our brother-in-law is a professional magician and we asked him to provide some evening entertainment for our guests. His magic is great and was hit with everyone.

REAL WEDDINGS 43

We’d had lots of advice from family and friends to take it all in and enjoyit, but you never know how you’re going to feel until the day. Harry wasvery chilled and relaxed, he enjoyed every moment. Once the ceremony wasdone, I did too... maybe it was the thought of standing in front of 90 peoplethat was making me nervous!

I can’t thank our suppliers enough for their support and professionalism. They really put me at ease. John, our photographer, particularly stood out. He made the whole day run smoothly and made sure we took time together when we could.

Inspired by 2022’s most popular wedding palette, dusky pink and burgundy, shoot coordinator Julie Madge of Madgicks produced a line of floral accessories to fit. Keen to show them off in the best possible way, she devised a styled shoot to celebrate not only her beautiful work but the oh-so gorgeous palette itself, illustrating just why it’s been so on trend.

Armed with the colour brief and an alternative twist in mind, the team set off for Two Woods Estate where they came together to build on the foundation the accessories provided to encapsulate the whole wedding day’s styling.

20 ideas for keeping your wedding guests entertained

WE LOVE to boogie

1 PHOTO BOOTH

From standard photo booths, to selfie mirrors and even boomerang booths the wedding market has it covered when it comes to letting guests in on the photography action. All provide prints for loved ones to take home and treasure and many offer guest books so you can get copies to laugh about later too! You can even hire a photo booth housed in an oh-so chic retro airstream. Check out www.airstreamstudio.co.uk

2 GARDEN GAMES

What could be better to entertain wedding guests on a balmy summer’s day than a selection of garden games? Ideal to spread out on the lawn as your loved ones mingle and sip on reception drinks – think quoits, giant Jenga, boules, giant Connect 4, croquet, we could go on...

3 MINI GOLF

Mini golf is a British institution and heaps of fun to boot. Sure to delight nearest and dearest of all ages, you can enjoy wedding-themed obstacles and could even set up a leaderboard for the day – who doesn’t love a bit of healthy competition?

5 DJ

We’d definitely recommend investing in a DJ rather than attempting to fill the dancefloor with your Spotify playlist. These folks have years of experience and not only do they know exactly what to play and when, they can create the atmosphere you’re looking for during your big bash.

4 FIREWORKS

Fireworks will literally wow the crowds at your wedding as your guests “ooh” and “ahh” at the display. Be sure to leave it to the professionals and you won’t be disappointed. Different packages are usually available to fit around your budget and be sure to check with your venue first, in case they don’t permit fireworks. Check out https://sussexfireworksforweddings.co.uk

Brian Mole is an award-winning wedding DJ based in West Sussex, who specialises in providing exceptional customer service. He has some valuable wisdom to impart when it comes to planning the big day’s entertainment and says, “When you’re researching your vendors, make sure you’re able to meet the people who’ll be working for you on the big day, either in person or virtually. The personal touch is so important to ensure the success of your wedding and it’s essential you get on with them.” Be sure to discuss your likes and dislikes as well as any song requests you simply can’t do without, including the all-important first dance.”

Brian continues, “Make sure your vendor shares a written agreement for your peace of mind and check they have the required documentation to work for you at your venue. Usually, this is public liability insurance, electrical equipment testing and risk assessment.”

6 MAGICIAN

It’s easy to avoid the awkward lull in proceedings while you scamper off for your photos when a magician is on hand. Brilliant at breaking the ice, a magician will have your guests enthralled and chatting as though they’ve known each other for years thanks to their exciting shared experience. 7 LIVE BAND

The brain child of husband and wife team Nathan and Rachel Evans, Toast was born in 2010. Nathan plays with popular wedding band The Deloreans (www.thedeloreansband.com), and after years of working in the industry he identified the need for a company to cater to the demand from clients for entertainers they could trust. With an understanding of events from both sides of the coin, and a network of artists and performers, the Toast roster started to grow offering a range of acts, but not so many you could get lost when trying to choose the right one for you.

Nathan says, “Every act we work with is hand picked and meets the highest quality we aim for. We’re proud to work closely with some amazing local wedding venues such as Farbridge, Southend Barns, Upwaltham Barns and Goodwood to name a few. We work closely with our clients and acts to offer a seamless service.” Check out www.toastlive.co.uk

8 TRIBUTE ACT

Wish your favourite chart-topping act could play at your wedding, but can’t quite stretch to it? There are plenty of uncannily accurate tribute acts around, so why not opt for the next best thing?

9 CARICATURES

Give your loved ones their own unique piece of artwork to take home. It’s easier than it sounds when you hire a caricaturist. Everyone will be so busy lining up for their turn, they won’t even notice when you disappear with your photographer.

10 SINGING WAITERS

The looks on your guests’ faces will be priceless and worthy of tagging when singing waiters are in town. #Awks turns into joy, laughter and delight in a heartbeat.

11 HARPIST

TOP TIP

“When choosing a band or DJ for your big day, think about all of your guests and what they’ll enjoy in order to create the perfect soundtrack and an atmosphere to remember.”

– Nathan Evans, Toast

14 COCKTAILS

Make the drinks reception all the more fun and personalised with your own wedding-day cocktail, whether it’s your favourite or something of your own creation.

Harpist Margaret Watson has been playing the harp for more than 20 years and has a wealth of experience playing at weddings. Be it in a village church, cathedral, garden, castle or even The Ritz, Margaret caters for all musical tastes from classical and traditional to the old favourites, film scores, songs from the shows and recent hits. She’s always more than happy to discuss your needs prior to the event, tailoring her service to meet them. If you’re a fan of live music, why not hire an acoustic soloist for the parts of the day that aren’t necessarily suited to a full plugged-in band?

16 CASINO

17 GLITTER BAR

The perfect addition to a festival-themed wedding a glitter bar will bring all the sparkly fun. Keep it ecofriendly and look for a company that supplies biodegradable glitter.

18 SAXOPHONIST

Strike a laid-back Ibiza party note with a live saxophonist to accompany your DJ on the dancefloor. Mingling with guests, that edge of interactive excitement will truly create the wedding wow factor.

19 THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT!

If there’ll be a lot of mini guests attending your wedding, we recommend looking into enlisting the help of a professional crèche service. Event Childcare is owned and run by Sophia Mainwaring and sister Lucy. As two of 13 siblings with 28 nieces and nephews, you could say they were destined for the roles in childcare. Based in West Sussex, the business has been in operation for more than a decade and they still come across people who weren’t aware a service like theirs existed! Sophia says, “We know children are such an important part of every event, but we also know mums, dads and caregivers need some adult time too – this is why we come to any venue and any event to provide our mobile crèche, activities and total on-site childcare solution.”

The team works within the parameters set out by Ofsted and all of their nannies are enhanced DBS checked, uniformed, insured and paediatric firstaid trained. They love to work with large groups and also offer one-on-one and overnight babysits. Check out www.eventchildcare.net

20 STRING QUARTET

Most of us have been Bridgerton obsessed since it hit our screens, and it’s easy to recreate that oh-so romantic Georgian atmosphere with a string quartet. While the show’s innovative soundtrack of modern hits make it a standout, this is something our modern day string musicians have been doing forever. Check out www.sussexstringquartet.com

Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

GREEN GOALS

How can we make sure our big day is as sustainable as it can be?

Planning a sustainable wedding in no way means being 100 per cent environmentally friendly – that would be impossible. However, there are many ways you can be sustainably conscious when starting out on your planning journey. Sadly, I’ve witnessed so much unnecessary waste go into landfill from within the events sector over the years, so I’d like to share a few ways of reducing that and encouraging you to be aware of where and who you’re hiring from.

Firstly, try to find suppliers who are local to your venue. This is a great way of keeping your carbon footprint down. There’s a huge collection of wedding suppliers on Instagram, it’s a great place to start, but be sure to get a feel for their ethos. With caterers for example, ask where their produce is sourced from, if locally from farms holding the Red Tractor logo then you know you’re onto a winner!

Try to find a florist who has connections with their local flower farms. Weddings displaying our great British flowers are some of the best in my opinion! Try to avoid blooms that are flown in. There are also some amazing confetti farms in the UK, by purchasing your confetti from these businesses not only are you supporting the domestic farming industry but also our amazing, bird and insect colonies.

Ditch disposable tableware and hire yours from a reputable company. Avoid plastics and bamboo plates etc, don’t be fooled into thinking they can be recycled, as not all can. Hiring them ensures each item will be used and enjoyed time and time again with nothing being discarded.

Lastly, if you’re looking for an outdoor wedding venue look for one that

doesn’t host back-to-back weddings. You may need to book further in advance for this but by offering fewer dates each year the land has time to recuperate between each event and the wildlife and surroundings are less disturbed.

If we all do a bit, we can make a big difference.

SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND

I’d really like my wedding ring to include some precious stones. How would this work?

These days, many wedding rings feature diamonds in one way or another. However, other types of stone are rarely used as they’re far less durable and are easily scratched or scuffed through day-to-day wear. Diamonds are ranked at 10 on Mohs’ hardness scale, whereas sapphires and rubies, rank at 9, so they’re much softer – all other gemstones are softer still. This means that diamonds can only be scratched by other diamonds making them the only stone that’s really suitable for everyday wear.

If your engagement ring features diamonds, it’s wise to use more

of a similar quality in your wedding band. Most people want their engagement ring to remain the focal point, so stone size is important here – if the diamonds in the wedding band are bigger than those in the engagement ring, the two will be competing for attention, rather than complementing one another. It makes sense to decide on the most appropriate width of band to put with your engagement ring, and then consider how diamonds could work within it.

With a custom-made ring you can decide on the number of stones, their size and quality, as well as how they are to be arranged. In fact, the subject of stones is just one element of the overall design and can be fully explored at a design consultation with a bespoke jeweller.

EXPERT ADVICE 57

OCTOBER-FEST

We both love the autumn, which is why we’ve chosen October to get married! Is there any way to reflect what we love about the season in our wedding photos to give them a twist?

Autumn is my favourite time of year! Definitely take advantage of fall colours surrounding your venue. Changing leaves and autumn foliage will create beautiful, picturesque landscapes.

Have a clear plan with your photographer. During fall, the sun sets earlier, so be sure to make the most of the light. Look up the sunset time in advance to allow you to schedule in time for golden hour portraits where possible. The golden hour creates a gorgeous soft, warm light for portraits and can really enhance the autumnal hues and foliage around you.

Think about the colours of the season and perhaps try to incorporate these warm, rich tones into your colour palette. Deep burgundy, burnt orange, forest greens in floral arrangements, wedding party outfits and tablescapes can really enhance the gorgeous fall tones in your photos. Why not consider adding further subtle touches into the detail of your day, such as fir cones, autumn leaves or even small pumpkins?

This time of year means slightly colder weather, so make sure you and your guests stay warm. Blankets are a great way to keep the chill off during the evening. You could also incorporate a blanket or shawl in an autumnal colour for your couple photos to create that cosy fall feeling.

AN AUTUMNAL TREAT

How can we reflect our autumnal wedding theme in our big-day bake?

Your wedding cake is the perfect way to bring together the details of your chosen colour scheme, theme or overall vibe for your big day and there are so many ways to incorporate an autumnal feel into it. The distinct colour palette of the season includes bright yet muted colours of dark orange, yellows, rich pinks, browns and greens. These can be brought into play through the use of a floral or sugar flower arrangement, watercolour details, the base colour of the cake or coloured textures. Contrast these with soft, neutral hues for a gentler pop of colour.

The style of the cake can become very organic, with loose foliage, a wide trailing silk ribbon, or a flowing design that encompasses the feeling of being windswept. Including natural textures such as tree bark or stone can also be used to lend it a natural, weathered feel. Dried florals and grasses such as pampas are still popular and these embody the feeling of the seasons turning, as do seasonal fruits, which can be arranged onto the cake, such as blackberries, figs and pears.

You can also flavour your cake to continue the theme. Try swapping out strawberry conserve for fig or blackberry, or adding ginger or salted caramel to your flavour choices for a sweet, warming kick.

The ultimate A-Z guide to wedding-dress shopping

AIS FOR ALTERATIONS

Once you’ve ordered your dream dress you’ll need to start looking for a seamstress to do your alterations. Even though you’ve ordered your size, chances are it’ll still need a little tweak here and there as dresses fit everyone differently. Often the bridal boutique will be able to make a recommendation or may even have one in house. If not, look on social media for those with plenty of good reviews.

CIS FOR CATWALK

Our top tip for newly-engaged couples is to hit the wedding shows as soon as you can. It’s the best way to meet suppliers and assemble your W-day team. While you’re there, be sure to experience a catwalk show. It’ll help you find the inspiration you’ve been looking for from silhouettes, to fabrics and designers; as well as guiding you towards a boutique you might want to make an appointment with.

DIS FOR DIARY

Claire says, “For many brides looking for the perfect wedding dress can start out as an overwhelming shopping experience. Do your research on designers, styles and the price ranges bridal shops offer before you make an appointment. Bringing nude underwear with you and wearing minimal make-up are practical pointers, but all we ask really is that you bring an open mind and sense of fun! It’s important to us that you feel relaxed and enjoy the process.”

E IS FOR ENTOURAGE

“Whether you want the whole entourageand-champagne moment or something more cosy, relaxed and intimate is something you need to think about. Covid limited the number of people who could come along to a boutique appointment, which worked for many who could only bring the most important people with trusted opinions to help them choose. Ultimately, only you know how a dress makes you feel, so go with your gut feeling. This is definitely an emotional purchase rather than a practical one, and is all about your vision for yourself on your wedding day,” Claire tells us.

BIS FOR BODY BEAUTIFUL

Claire Baldwin from Clara Fitz Bridal in Worthing (www.clarafitzbridal.com) says, “It’s so important to us here to have dresses to fit everyone and stock sizes from 8 to 28 in the boutique, but most styles can be ordered up to a 32. You all deserve to feel your most beautiful on your wedding day, so being able to get a true vision of how you’ll look is so important. Our Silhouette Collection by Romantica of Devon has everything from classic to boho.”

IS FOR FABRIC

The fabric you end up opting for will largely be governed by the style you’ve fallen in love with. Gorgeous floaty chiffon and tulle are delicate, lightweight materials often found in soft, effortless, boho-chic gowns – ideal for summer nuptials. Sparkle tulles in particular have been on trend in 2022. Classic satins with modern twists too are very much en vogue when it comes to beautifully structured shapes and clean lines.

“Sustainable fabrics such as organic lace, satin, Mikado and natural silk are set to be big in 2023,” says County Wedding Magazines’ fashion editor Claire Ridley. “Stretch crepe is the ultimate fabric for the modern bride with the sassy mermaid silhouette receiving an update thanks to this material, and sheathstyle gowns also made from it showcase sexy front splits.”

GIS FOR GOWNS

There are so many silhouettes and styles to choose from, so start by having a look in your own wardrobe to see what vibe you usually veer

towards for a special occasion or what you know feels comfortable on your body. If you’re not used to something fitted, your wedding day might not be the time to try – so avoid the fit and flares and look at the A-lines. Likewise, think about your overall vision. For example, a boho rustic event cries out for something relaxed, soft, non-structured and flowing.

HIS FOR HAPPY TEARS

Fear not, when you find the one all is not necessarily as we see it on TV with much arm flapping and tears. If you’re not the emotional sort, it’s unlikely you’ll suddenly start while you’re dress shopping, and that’s completely fine. Sometimes, it will simply be a case of weighing up your options and feeling satisfied with your decision. As long as you feel comfortable in that, there’s no reason to doubt it, so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

IIS FOR IVORY

Here comes the bride, all dressed in white... or is she? While Queen Victoria made it popular for the bride to wear white, having done so on her own wedding day, commitment to this tradition has by and large been relegated to the annals of history. More popular hues now are warmer ones such as ivory of course, as well as moscato, almond, rum and champagne. If you’re feeling daring you could even go floral or with something bold. Just ensure the colour complements your skin tone and doesn’t wash you out.

JIS FOR JEWELLERY

The fun doesn’t end when you order your dress, as now you get to start shopping for your accessories. It’s generally recommended to do this after you’ve decided on your attire as it’s easier to make the jewellery work with the dress rather than the other way around. The right piece can elevate your look or solve any niggles you may have. Your choice can depend on your neckline, hairstyle and detail on your dress.

KIS FOR KICK UP YOUR HEELS

Once you’ve ordered your gown, it’s time to give your footwear some serious thought. You’ll need to have your shoes in the bag by the time your alterations appointment comes round as it’s important to make sure the seamstress knows the exact length the dress needs to be, and heels versus flats will make quite the difference.

Make sure you’re comfortable. If you generally live and die in trainers, there are some gorgeous bridal options out there. Alternatively, many brides choose to make their shoes their wedding-day treat to themselves and spend months saving for the ultimate Jimmy Choos. Your footwear offers another opportunity to put your own stamp on your attire and Brighton-based brand Irregular Choice always proves a popular choice amongst those looking to add a super-fun twist.

MIS FOR MONEY

LIS FOR LACE

Lace has long been used in wedding dresses thanks to its luxurious nature, having historically been labour-intensive to produce. Once again Queen Vic is in part responsible for its popularity, having sported handmade lace on her wedding dress. But if you’re now thinking of grandma’s doilies – stop!

Modern lace is as varied as it is beautiful. Alencon, eyelet, Chantilly, embroidered, guipure (sometimes called Venetian), soft knit, and point d’esprit are all popular with today’s designers, covering a myriad of styles.

It’s easy to get swept up in all the gorgeous gowns on offer, so how to avoid busting the budget and before that, how to settle on one? There’s a general rule of thumb out there on the internet that says you should allocate five to 10 per cent of your overall budget to the dress but it really does depend on what you feel comfortable with and whether this is one of your non-negotiable elements. We recommend above all that you’re realistic about what you want and the rest will fall into place. For example, if you love lots of detailing and heavy beading, an acceptance that this isn’t going to come cheap will stand you in good stead, it’s then up to you whether you want to compromise.

NIS FOR NECKLINES

As there are many silhouettes to choose from, there's also a world of necklines, each having its part to play in complementing or accentuating your figure. Head to Google and research sweetheart, plunging, off-the-shoulder, high, halter, one-shoulder, V, illusion, boat, empire, queen, scoop... we could go on!

RIS FOR REVIEWS

As you would when researching any supplier for your W-day team, check out your local bridal boutique’s reviews. They’re understandably proud of the kind words their past brides have shared, so many will have a tab on their website you can look through. Alternatively, Facebook is a good place to see what’s hot. If nothing else, they’ll help to reassure you that you’re in good hands if you’re nervous before your appointment.

OIS FOR ORDERING

Claire says, “Most designers will quote around 20 weeks plus from your order to the arrival of your dress. You’ll then need to allow time for your alterations, especially during busy summer periods, so allowing yourself nine to 12 months is optimal.”

PIS FOR PRELOVED

If you’d rather invest your cash in other areas of the wedding, but don’t want to compromise on your look, you may want to consider looking at preloved gowns. Kinder on the pocket, these dresses will have been worn only once, some not at all, and may be no older than last season. Check out Bridal Reloved Rustington (https://bridalreloved.co.uk).

QIS FOR QUICK

Another budget-saving solution, or an idea if you’re short on time, is a sample sale. At the end of the season bridal boutiques will often hold special events where they sell their sample dresses at a reduced cost to give them room in the boutique for the new lines. You’ll be limited on size of course, so be prepared to spend more on alterations. But they’re ready and waiting for you to take away, so no year-in-advance ordering is required.

Some boutiques such as Clara Fitz Bridal offer a speedy solution if you’re in a hurry. Claire says, “We have plenty of dresses available for you to take away the very same day, so always ask and grab yourself a bargain too.”

SIS FOR SLEEVES

Sleeves are becoming incredibly popular and offer a multitude of flexible options – you only have to look at our fashion feature Standout Sleeves this issue to see what we mean. Many designs are available with or without them, with detachable sleeves allowing you to change the look from daytime to evening, or you can also choose the length. You could even talk to your seamstress about adding to gowns that don’t already have them if you’re self-conscious about your arms or just love the look.

TIS FOR TRENDS

County Wedding Magazines’ fashion editor Claire Ridley tells us what to look out for in the world of wedding fashion in 2023...

Plain dresses featuring clean-cut lines with a minimalist aesthetic.

Statement sleeves, which are here to stay with lightly puffed styles adding the wow factor.

Lace bodices adorned with beautiful beadwork and voluminous skirts made with layers of organza offering a new take on princessstyle dresses.

Contoured corsetry boasting square or strapless necklines.

Wide, low backlines, which provide a fresh update to the illusion look, as does the option to include a cape veil.

The midi-length dress with a soft tulle skirt (à la Carrie Bradshaw) combined with off-the-shoulder sleeves

Couture details such as structured box pleats with hidden pockets, lace appliqué and floral motifs

VIS FOR VEIL

“A veil always adds drama and frames your beautiful bridal image. I always favour a long veil due to the softness it creates. A shorter veil definitely works too as it frames the whole silhouette. Have fun trying different lengths and styles when you’re narrowing down your favourite dresses, even if you think you don’t want one – you might surprise yourself,” Claire tells us.

WIS FOR WILD CARD

YOur golden rule when it comes to wedding-dress shopping is to go in with a completely open mind, as tunnel vision could lead to a stressful situation if the style you set your heart on just doesn’t work out how you thought. Your stylist or one of your entourage may pull out a wild card, something you never thought you’d go for. Trust us, try it on, it could be the one

IS FOR “YES”

do you know this is the dress for you? We have some ideas...

You don’t want to take it off.

You compare every other dress to it.

You feel beautiful and confident

You can picture yourself walking down the aisle in it.

You’ve already started accessorising in your mind

UIS FOR UNIQUE

Couples are finding more and more wonderful ways to personalise their wedding days, and this is something easily extended to your attire. If you’ve found a gown that’s nearly there but not quite discuss options with your consultant, whether it be a few extra sparkles, lace, appliqué detail, or buttons. They can often work with you to make sure your dress is everything you ever dreamed of and completely you You could even make it super-personal by adding a swatch of fabric from a loved one’s wedding dress or go all out and commission a bespoke gown.

XIS FOR X-PERT

Ok, we cheated a bit, but we couldn’t finish up without extolling the virtues of the amazing local boutique consultants. They have your best interests at heart and they really know their stuff. When you arrive for your appointment you’ll have an initial consultation, which will help your stylist to understand you and your vision. We like to think of them as the dress whisperers! ZIS FOR ZOOM

It’s inevitable your dress will have a little travelling to do –when you collect it and when you take it to the venue, as a minimum. To keep it in tip-top condition invest in a good quality, acid-free garment bag to store it in, and once it’s home keep it away from any harsh light or temperatures. When you’re heading for the venue lay down the seats of the car and place the dress flat if you can, or hang from the garment hook if that fails. Just be sure to hang it up again as soon as you arrive. We’d also highly recommend taking a handheld steamer with you – we speak from experience! Your seamstress will steam it for you once she’s worked her magic, but it doesn’t take much for some fabrics to crumple again.

Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals

SHORT AND SWEET

How can you style a long pixie cut or short bob to elevate it into the realms of a bridal look?

Alison says: Not every bride wants to grow her hair for her wedding day. If you have a short hairstyle, I recommend you start by thinking about a hair accessory, then your stylist can give you ideas of how to style your locks around it. I love a beautiful statement headband on short hair, but make sure it fits comfortably and securely. Accessories that clip into short hair also work well but avoid anything too heavy.

When it comes to styling, longer lengths of hair at the front can be twisted or braided away from the face for the effect of an up-do. A wavy bob with one side clipped up looks great and has been popular with my short-haired brides. Maybe you have enough hair for a low bun or chignon, leaving some tresses out at the front to frame your face. Another up-do option is to tease some volume into the top and then twist and pinup the rest of the hair, leaving shorter lengths out around the face. Twists and braids from the front pinned behind the crown make a perfect half-up style. For a vintage vibe, try some finger waves.

Whatever the length of your hair, it can still be amazing on your wedding day!

HEAVEN SCENT

I’m looking for the perfect perfume for my wedding day. Do you have any suggestions on where to start?

Hollie says: When it comes to planning your special day, selecting your ideal wedding perfume will not only complete your outfit, it will also remind you of the big day for years to come. Scents are renowned for triggering memories, so what better way to remember your momentous occasion than through a new scent?

You can, of course, choose whichever fragrance you love. But I’d recommend trying a completely new discovery, something you’ve never worn before. This ensures it has no relation to any previous memory and means the new scent will always transport you back to your wedding.

You’ll also want a fragrance that will last throughout the day, so opt for an eau de parfum, which has a higher concentration of fragrance oil (around 25 per cent), which typically makes them stronger and longerlasting. Also, look for such notes as patchouli, white musk, sandalwood, tuberose, vetiver, and freesia as these linger on the skin for longer.

Check out Lancome La Via Est Belle, Barbour Female, Carolina Herrera Good Girl Supreme, Jennifer Lopez Promise, Ghost Orb Of Night and Estée Lauder Beautiful – all great bridal fragrances. Alternatively, if you’re struggling to find the perfect scent match, flirt before you buy with The Fragrance Shop scentaddict subscription, and choose a new 8ml fragrance each month for £12. They’re also perfect to carry with you on the big day.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub

£13, 100ml, www.glossybox.co.uk

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial Cream

£24, 75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, 15ml, www.lookfantastic.com

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology!

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors.

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body.

£18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it looked!

Check out https://taoh.co.uk

WEDDING-READY SKIN

We all know stress can play havoc with our skin and let’s face it, planning a wedding can be trying. Peace Out skincare has a range of solution-based products to ensure your complexion is picture-perfect on your big day.

It all starts with the prep and so it’s time to bring your A-game… vitamin A that is! Peace Out’s Retinol Face Stick (£28) and Retinol Eye Stick (£25) offer an encapsulated retinol blend that softens the look of wrinkles and texture without any of the harsh side effects. In addition, the fruit enzyme complex combines papaya and pumpkin to target pores and reveal brighter, smoother-looking skin. Start using three-months prior to the nuptials to ensure you’re wedding ready.

Nicole Petty, haircare expert for Milk + Blush, shares 2022’s most popular wedding hair trends and how to achieve them

MESSY BUN

Although, achieving the perfect messy bun can feel like an impossible task TikTok has the answer with a viral hack that’s seen more than six million views…

Section your hair into two ponytails and twist into rope braids. Next, tie the ends of the hair back into the pony to create two loops. Finally, thread one loop through the other to create the bun and secure in place with bobby pins. To elevate the look into the bridal realm, pull out some face-framing tendrils and loosely curl them for the ultimate romantic up do.

POLISHED PONYTAIL

With heatwaves expected to become more frequent, ponytails are a popular and chic style to sport for comfortably enjoying your summer wedding. Take inspiration from Ariana Grande, who showed off her trademark sleek high pony at her wedding last year.

To get this voluminous look, make two ponytails with your top and bottom layers. Next, create a gap in the top pony that you can thread the bottom through to create a layered look. If you need more length, why not invest in clip-in extensions?

FLIPPY BOB

We often think of long hair being the height of romance, but shorter wedding hair is having a moment in 2022. Many have taken inspiration from Kourtney Kardashian's latest look and have adopted her flippy bob for their big days.

To get the look, use a hair mousse for plenty of volume. Then, with a round brush, blow dry the ends upwards to create the flick. Follow with the cool setting to help your locks stay in place and finish by spritzing with hairspray.

HOLLYWOOD WAVES

Nothing exudes glamour like Hollywood waves, a firm favourite among brides. Jennifer Lopez showed just how stunning the style can be at her recent wedding to Ben Affleck, styling her hair in loose curls, with the top layer pulled back into a subtle bouffant.

To recreate the look, use a oneinch curling iron to curl the tresses in layers from the bottom up, holding the curling iron horizontally and rolling the hair downwards as though you’re using rollers. Finish by gently combing through and positioning the hair to create continuous waves before holding the still-hot curling iron against where they dip and clip them in place to cool and set.

HALF-UP, HALF-DOWN

Romantic, versatile and effortlessly elegant this has been one of the most popular styles for brides to wear this year.

Almost anyone can wear a half-up, half-down do, but for those with fine hair, consider investing in some extensions for more body. Focus on creating some height at the crown with some volumising spray and backcombing.

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Our wedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details andmade sure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minutemeeting with her to run through the plan for the day, whichwe found was a great help and meant we knew exactly what toexpect. I recommend booking a venue with a dedicated weddingcoordinator or hiring an external company, so that you can relaxand enjoy yourself without having to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our photographer while he was working at a friend’s wedding. He has an amazing style that we both loved, and we found him really easy to be around. One of the best things we did in the run-up to the wedding was book a prewedding shoot. We were both quite nervous in front of the camera, and this put us at ease and meant that when we got to the big day, we both felt relaxed having our picture taken.

88

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening receptionthat would get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazingtrio who learnt our first dance song and incorporated someof our favourite tunes into their set list. We were a bit worriedthat people would get bored or restless throughout the day, butall of our guests were quite content chatting during the drinksreception, and I’m quite glad we kept things scaled back as itallowed us to catch up with friends and family who we hadn’t seenin a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’tmeet until the morning of the wedding. Originally, this mademe feel anxious but the whole process went smoothly, and theladies conducting our service were calming and reassuring. Weincorporated promises to each other in our vows that we feltrepresented us as a couple. For those of you about to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, as there’s nothing morespecial than looking into your partner’s eyes and telling them howmuch you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

The ultimate

destination

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to the airport!

Dubrovnik is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on some cocktails.

We had a farewell meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.

92

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi McFarlane (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon).
