ust like that, it’s the end of another year. I don’t know about you, but the older I get, the quicker time seems to fly by. It seems like only yesterday that I was writing about my upcoming wedding, and here we are over a year later. If you’ve recently become engaged and the wedding feels like it’s forever away, trust me, it will be here before you know it. The best piece of advice I can offer is to enjoy the planning process and celebrate the small things. If you’ve said yes to the dress or booked that special venue that you’ve had your eye on, take the time to celebrate – go out on a date, treat yourselves, and make a scrapbook of those key moments. Once the wedding is over, you’ll love having those memories to look back on. It’s been wonderful seeing the wedding industry flourish again this year. I’ve loved seeing your nuptials, businesses beginning to return to normal, and new companies opening their doors, so to celebrate and end the year with a bang, we’ve gone all out with an issue full of must-see venues, photography and wedding dresses.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Susan McGregor Celebrant is celebrating one year as a wedding celebrant – congratulations! “I have loved officiating the weddings I undertook this year; the highlights include my first wedding in a beautiful family garden in the Suffolk countryside and another marrying a fabulous couple who, having married each other over 35 years ago and then sadly divorced, decided they were ‘better together’ and tied the knot for a second time,” says Susan. “Next year I have a range of bookings already; June and August are the busiest months so far, and I’m looking forward to giving them all a wonderful ceremony to cherish and remember forever! I would love any couple looking for a beautiful, personalised wedding ceremony to get in touch with me for a no-obligation chat to talk over their plans. Having a wedding ceremony planned and prepared with love and attention is what every couple deserves. “I will be exhibiting at the Hintlesham Hall Wedding Show in January and the Newmarket Wedding Show in February. It’s a lovely time to chat with and meet wonderful couples who are beginning to plan their wedding day and already know they want something more than an ‘ordinary’ ceremony.” Head over to www.susanmcgregorcelebrant.co.uk for more information.
JUST THE TWO OF US The Guildhall in Bury St. Edmunds is offering a special deal for micro-weddings. Priced at £400 for the ceremony (normally £550), the deal is perfect for couples looking to tie the knot in January, February, or March 2024, from Tuesday to Thursday, with up to eight of their nearest and dearest. The ceremony will be held in the Robing Room, which was used in the past for the mayor and other dignitaries of the town to change into their ceremonial robes. The price includes access to The Guildhall on your wedding day for 45 minutes before the ceremony and up to one hour afterwards. You can arrange for drinks to be served either in the garden, the Robing Room or the Royal Observer Corps Ops Room after the ceremony, if you wish. You have access to the courtyard and gardens (weather permitting) for photographs, and volunteer witnesses can be provided if required for a small donation to Guildhall funds. As The Guildhall has a fully fitted catering kitchen, you can have an intimate lunch or dinner served to your guests, and the team can recommend a selection of excellent caterers who will be happy to provide pricing. WHERE THE

Kylie and Joe incorporated their love of lavender into their wedding at Cley Windmill Images courtesy of Tim Doyle Photography
K
ylie and Joe met 14 years ago thanks to a mutual friend. “Our bond was ignited by our shared sense of humour, which quickly brought us closer together,” says Kylie. “Our connection grew, leading us to embark on numerous dates and lots of fun activities, which included a lot of sight-seeing.” After thinking marriage might not be on the cards for them, Kylie was shocked when Joe popped the question. “He whisked me away to London for a day, treating me to the joyous spectacle of Mamma Mia The Party and a vibrant party at the London O2 arena,” shares the
bride. “The performance was utterly enchanting, filled with laughter, dancing, and delectable cuisine. Amid the dancing, Joe arranged for someone to capture a snapshot of us. To my astonishment, he got down on one knee, asking me to marry him. My eyes couldn’t believe what they were witnessing. Strangely, instead of saying ‘yes’, I instinctively responded with a thumbs-up, a moment we now fondly laugh and joke about.” Read on to see some of Kylie’s favourite moments from their big day... 35
I was drawn to Cley Windmill because of its unique charm and picturesque setting. The windmill’s rustic yet elegant ambiance, coupled with its stunning coastal location, captured my heart. The historical character, breathtaking views, and sense of intimacy made the perfect backdrop for our special day, creating an unforgettable and romantic atmosphere that resonated deeply with my vision of a dream wedding.
The marquee was a sight to behold. It was a laid-back yet captivating space adorned with lanterns, twinkling fairylights, and an illuminated love sign. Adding to the charm was an antique suitcase brimming with an array of delightful sweets, all thoughtfully curated to harmonise with our lavender theme.
Our cake was provided by Scrumptious Buns and was adorned with lavender piping and fresh flowers. 36
Our aim was to evoke a soothing atmosphere that harmonised with the venue’s essence while also highlighting the distinctive qualities of the windmill itself. For our favours, we opted for cookies crafted in the likeness of a windmill, and to extend the sense of tranquilly, we provided lavender and pampas grass tokens for our guests to take home. This was a perfect match to the exquisite centrepieces thoughtfully designed by Bev from Serendipity Wedding Hire.
Upon entering Cley Windmill, our guests were met with a stunning wedding sign extending a warm welcome to our celebration. Adjacent to this was a bicycle adorned with flowers.
The ceremony location featured exquisite seating arrangements with purple blooms gracing each chair, as well as delicate flowers on the ropes near the reeds of the windmill.
REAL WEDDINGS
My gown, an exclusive creation by Ronald Joyce, matched my vision perfectly. It was a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that perfectly harmonised with Cley Windmill’s setting while granting me a princess-like feeling. To complement the dress, I adorned a stunning custom veil, expertly crafted by the wife of a colleague from my workplace who owns Beth O in Nigeria.
We went for ivory bridesmaids’ dresses that had beautiful crystals on the waistline.
We wanted to create a laid-back atmosphere, so we gathered in the marquee and enjoyed our personalised wedding playlist, which prompted us all to joyfully sing and dance along.
For our food, the pièce de résistance was a classic cheeseboard that exceeded all of our expectations. It was skillfully crafted by the exceptional Cley Windmill staff.
I had no involvement in what Joe was going to wear, so it was a total surprise when he wore a flattering three-piece suit from Revolver Menswear. He chose a cream design with a navy waistcoat, a gold and navy tie, and a gold pocket watch.
On our wedding day, our hearts swelled with overwhelming happiness. Walking down the aisle towards the love of my life, surrounded by our cherished friends and family, we felt a mixture of exhilaration and serenity. The vows we exchanged held profound significance, solidifying our bond in a way I had always dreamed of. 37
My dad’s speech was amazing and it brought back so many happy memories for us. Every detail, from the décor to the music, was a reflection of our journey and love story. As we looked into each other’s eyes, we knew that this day was the beginning of our beautiful adventure together.
We’re due to fly out to America soon, but our honeymoon has been rebranded as a family-moon as we are taking the kids to Disney. We brought our dogs, Minne and Buddy, and when they saw me, Buddy dived towards me and knocked me and my drink flying!

hloe and Ryan met through a mutual friend. “I used to be a barber and cut Ryan’s hair,” says Chloe. “We bonded through our love of Harry Potter, and the rest is history.” Ryan proposed on Chloe’s birthday. “It was a few months after the birth of our daughter Matilda,” shares the bride. “It was a complete surprise! He told me there was a present behind the sofa, but when I looked, there was nothing there. I turned around, and there he was, down on one knee.”
SETTING THE SCENE The happy couple chose Hintlesham Golf Club as their wedding venue. “It’s very local to home and Ryan is a member of the golf club,” explains Chloe. “It had recently been refurbished, and as soon as we walked in and saw all the fairylights on the beams, we knew it would be perfect for our winter wedding. The staff also provided our food. We chose roasted leek and potato soup to start, parma ham and sage-wrapped pork tenderloin for the main, and a trio of desserts for afters. In case our guests wanted something extra, we gave them sweets as favours. We filled the bags with our favourites – blue and pink fizzy cola bottles and white chocolate Jazzies.” The couple decided to have 10 tables, with the top table seating their parents and daughter. “To decorate the tables, we chose tall flute glasses,” recalls Chloe. “We added wooden hearts and pearls with wisteria branches provided by ExtravOrganza. To finish the look, we chose ivory lace hoods for the chairs and an eucalyptus arch, which we also got married under. “Our flowers were created by Henley Flowers,” adds the bride. “My bouquet was made up of mainly roses, ranunculus, anemone, freesia, and lisianthus in whites, ivory, and greens. My three bridesmaids’ bouquets were similar but smaller. We also had a long and low arrangement for the ceremony and top table.” Luca’s Cakes provided the couple’s four-tiered wedding cake. “It had a buttercream finish and was decorated with fresh flowers,” says Chloe. “It was made up of cookies and cream, marble sponge, vanilla and jam, and lemon sponge with lemon buttercream and curd.” Simon’s White Wedding Cars provided a Mercedes S Class S500L to transport Chloe and her dad to the venue and a stretched limousine for the bridesmaids, flowergirls, and mother-of-the-bride.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I chose a Stella York dress called 7424 from The Wedding Shop,” shares the bride. “I chose this gown because it had some drama in the skirt with gorgeous detailing and a jewelled bodice. It was the first dress I tried on, and I loved it more and more with every fitting. I accessorised with a layered veil that looked beautiful. “Ryan opted for a grey suit from The Groom’s Room with a forest green tie and a pocket square,” continues Chloe. “The green complemented the bridesmaids’ dresses, which were forest green multiway designs that we purchased at Lá Closet Dé Chánel.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE “To keep our guests entertained, we hire cello and classical guitarist Duetto Arpeggione to perform during the ceremony and drinks reception,” explains Chloe. “They played while I walked down the aisle and performed a selection of songs during the drinks reception, which the guests loved. My dad surprised us with The Tailors Surprise Singers after the speeches; these were not just your standard singing waiters, as all of the song lyrics were personalised for us. It went down a storm with our guests, and we still speak about it to this day.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “On the morning of the wedding, I felt very nervous, and it took me until just before I put my dress on to realise that I was actually getting married,” recalls Chloe. “The whole day was very emotional and full of so much love. One of 41

my favourite moments was my dress reveal to my bridesmaids and then to my dad, as only my mum had seen my dress before the day. “Some of the stories shared by the best man in his speech were hilarious,” adds Chloe. “My dad’s speech was so emotional but also funny. I also love our daddy/daughter dance, which was very special.”

HONEYMOON “We went to the Dominican Republic for a week, which we planned together after the wedding to give us something to enjoy after our special day was over,” says Chloe. “It was really nice to spend some quality time together for the first time in two years since we had our daughter.”
CHLOE AND RYAN’S TOP TIP “Try and shorten the list of posed photographs that you want, especially the big family ones,” shares Chloe. ”Natural photos are much more magical, and it means you can spend more time with each other and your guests.”

THE BEAUTY OF Carla and Matt opted for a rustic celebration at Isaacs on the Quay Images courtesy of Zoë Gibbs Photography
C
arla and Matt met online. “I liked how down to earth, kind, and understanding Matt was and how easily the conversation flowed,” says Carla. “Matt said that he fell for how kind and sweet I am.” Matt proposed to Carla during the pandemic. “Matt originally planned to propose at Centre Parcs, but lockdown restrictions meant we couldn’t go,” shares the bride. “As the restrictions allowed for wedding venue viewings, Matt suggested visiting Hedingham Castle
as a chance to get out of the house. I felt bad that we were wasting the venue’s time in the middle of a pandemic, but little did I know, they were in on the surprise. We got shown to the ceremony room, had a look around, and Matt then took me to the end of the aisle and asked me to marry him.” Read on to see some of Carla’s favourite moments from their big day...

Isaacs on the Quay was the ideal venue for us and had the intimate, rustic feel that we were looking for with beautiful views of the marina. It was close to lots of hotels, so our guests could stay the night if they wanted, and it was accessible by car or train. There was also accommodation that could be hired at the back of the venue, which we stayed in the night before and after the wedding. Donna and the venue team were extremely helpful throughout the wedding planning process, which took away so much of the hassle and kept us calm.

Our flowers were mainly white with lots of greenery to match the natural theme. We had a table topper for the wedding ceremony where the register was signed; this was reused at the wedding breakfast on the top table and at the wedding reception by the guest book.
The cake was kindly made by Matt’s mum and had a Victoria sponge, chocolate and lemon drizzle layer. The cake was put on a log slice to match the table centrepieces. We purchased a personalised topper from Mudcards on Etsy that resembled us in our wedding attire. It also featured our cat, Luna, for an extra personal touch.
For our centrepieces, we purchased jars with chalkboard lids and wrote the table numbers on them. We used fake ivy and fairy lights to put in the jars to give them a warm and natural feel. We finished the look with mini gold jars with roses, log slices and gems.

We had a choice of two to three options per course for the wedding breakfast. In the evening, we could pick a traditional buffet or bacon and sausage butties with chips. We decided for the latter, and they went down a treat! The catering team at Isaacs on the Quay was very accommodating of our guests’ dietary requirements.
I wore a Morilee design called 6904 from London Bride UK. They had a lockdown sale and a home try-on service, so the dress was delivered to my house. I tried it on during my lunch break and unexpectedly found the one! I had an additional set of straps added to the dress, so there were two straps on each side that crossed over at the back.

I accessorised with gold cuff earrings with silver leaves to match the foliage. I also wore gold sparkly heels from Kurt Geiger that I could wear again after the wedding.
The bridesmaids wore forest green multi-way dresses from Lá Closet Dé Chánel. I asked them to choose whichever style they felt most comfortable in. They accessorised with gold necklaces with leaves on and gold shoes.
To keep our guests enter tained, we hired My Big Fat Wedding Disco. We also played Mr. and Mrs before our first dance and bought bubble guns in place of confetti, which kept the guests amused throughout the evening!

I got the wrong contact lens in each eye on the morning of the wedding and, not realising that I already had it out, managed to poke myself in the eye! Luckily, one of the ushers was a contact lens optician, so he came to the rescue!

We had our first dance choreographed by Starlight Dancing, which we kept a surprise from our guests. The dance went smoothly, and everyone kept commenting on how good it was.
We made each other’s wedding rings at The Jewellery Cottage in Attlebridge. It was a fun and memorable experience. We love knowing that our rings are personal and unique to us.
For our honeymoon, we finally got our Centre Parcs trip! We planned the break together and stayed for five nigh ts in total. We really enjoyed the time away, and the weather was in our favour. We were pleased that we went a few days after the wedding, so we could process the day.

WEDDING WORRIES
Our experts solve your problems WHATEVER THE WEATHER
How can we capture amazing outdoor pictures at our December wedding if the weather turns bad?
www.lizbishopphotography.co.uk
There’s no such thing as bad weather when it comes to wedding photos. It’s just a matter of turning the bad into good. For example, on a windy day, make use of the wind; it’s a great chance to get lovely shots of the bride’s veil floating instead of getting someone to throw it up in the air. Rain can be a couple’s worst nightmare, but rain also means puddles that can be used to create reflection photos. The use of umbrellas with a
FESTIVE CHEER We’re having a Christmas-themed wedding and want to incorporate the season into our photographs. Do you have any ideas of how we can create wintry images?
flash behind the couple also looks great in photos. I’ve yet to do a wedding where it snowed, but that would make for amazing photos, provided the couple is dressed for it with the bride in a lovely fur wrap. If it doesn’t snow but is cold enough, then the beautiful, crisp frost will make everything pop and look gorgeous. Don’t worry too much about the weather; it’s simply a chance to get different photos. Allen Blasdell www.creativepixelphotos.com

HOT
EXPERT ADVICE
A MOMENT IN TIME What questions should we ask a photographer before booking them for our wedding?
The daylight can be really special in the winter. Take advantage of the beautiful low sunshine at this time of year and incorporate sculptural foliage and warm hues. Even without the sunshine, you can get some great moody, atmospheric shots, so make use of the daylight hours. I love twinkly lights; the more, the better! The ambient light from candles, lamps, and fires makes for the most beautiful backdrops and really brings your photos to life. With a little creative lighting from your photographer, you can create some truly magical images. One of my favourite winter weddings had it all: sparklers, ice sculptures, a fire breather, and beautiful chandeliers. But when it comes down to it, nothing says Christmas more than twinkly lights, garlands, and, of course, a crackling open fire.
Firstly, I would advise checking that they are insured with public liability insurance. This is a legal requirement and helps protect all parties involved. No photographer should be photographing a wedding without insurance. Many venues will ask for a photographer’s documents a month or so before your wedding, and if your supplier does not have the correct legal requirements, they will not be allowed on-site to photograph your wedding, leaving you with the headache of finding a new photographer with only weeks to go! Secondly, do they own all of their equipment, including at least two cameras? Why two cameras? We need a backup camera in case something goes wrong. I actually take three cameras to every wedding. I work with two all day, and the third is my backup. In addition to the cameras, your photographer should have a selection of backup lenses, flash guns, battery packs, and memory cards ready just in case they’re needed.

HOLD ME CLOSE My hubby-to-be and I love Christmas and want to incorporate festive nods into our ceremony. Do you have any ideas of how we could do this?
You should consider having an engagement shoot with your photographer for several reasons. An engagement shoot is an investment that not only enhances the quality of your wedding photos, but it is also a fun and meaningful experience. The shoot will allow you to establish a good rapport with your photographer. This familiarity will really help you feel more at ease in front of the camera on your wedding day, leading to more natural and authentic photos. One thing you must do is trust your photographer. I may ask my couples to do some strange things, but go with it! An engagement shoot provides an opportunity to practice posing and expressions. As a couple, you can experiment with different prompts, ensuring you appear your best in your wedding photos and know exactly what to expect. Engagement shoots capture a specific moment in your wedding planning journey. These images often reflect your personalities and interests, making them more personal and meaningful. The photos from your engagement shoot can also be used for wedding invitations, save-the-dates and wedding décor, adding a personalised touch to these important elements of your wedding.
Creating a magical ceremony with festive nods is exactly what an independent celebrant will do. Whether you want a sprinkling of Christmas (or a great big dollop), you’ll work with your celebrant to create the perfect feel for your big day. Think about the music that you’ll come into and exit to, and if you want to have a favourite festive piece played during the ceremony. Readings can be themed, and even your vows and promises can be built around your favourite festive movies or movie quotes, the gifts you’ve given each other over the years, or the places you’ve visited over the season. Symbolic rituals can also be added. A wine, gin or mulled-wine blending ceremony can bring the season to life and is something that your lovely guests can be included in too. Blend your chosen drink, then have a tot ready for your guests to toast you with at the same time. Handfasting ribbons with themed colours, a candle ceremony to light your way, or a holly bush or ivy bush planting are just some of the limitless choices. Whether you choose one to highlight during your ceremony or to do a few to sprinkle even more magic on the occasion, your ceremony will be the highlight of your day, creating that wonderful Christmas cheer!

BEHIND THE LENS Lots of photographers offer an engagement shoot, but we’re camera shy and don’t know if it’s really for us. What are the benefits?
CAMERA READY
Your videographer should be able to capture the essence of the seasons, such as close-ups of falling autumn leaves, blooming flowers, rain, or a snowy landscape, giving your video a genuine seasonal feel. Choosing a venue that represents that season in its full glory is very important. If you’re having a spring or summer wedding, choose a venue with beautiful gardens where your videographer can capture blooming flowers, buzzing bees, and butterflies. Having the ceremony and reception outdoors will also look stunning and immediately show the season. A summer wedding in the fields, with tall grass as a striking backdrop for the golden hour footage and campfires for when the sun goes down, creates an air of outdoor romance. In the autumn, the amazing colours of the changing foliage will create a beautiful backdrop for your portraits, so look for a venue that has plenty of trees. For winter weddings, as most of the day will be indoors, consider reflecting the season in your décor. Lots of warm lighting and candles create a romantic, cosy, yet luxurious feel throughout the day. Of course, if you are lucky and are in a location where the winters are white, have 54

something warm to wear over your wedding attire and go outdoors for those couple shots. Have your ceremony earlier than you would have if your wedding were in the summer, as we lose the natural light so quickly and there will be less time to capture your portraits. Work with your videographer and photographer to figure out when the sun goes down and set an optimal time for your ceremony. Tanya Allenby www.tanyaallenby.com

The latest seasonal wedding dress trends
ou said ‘yes’, the ring is on your finger, so what’s next? The dress, of course! For many brides-to-be it’s one of the most exciting parts of the wedding journey and it’s tempting to rush out to the shops straight away and start trying on gorgeous gowns. After all, it’s not every day you get the chance, right? Not wanting to sound like a killjoy, but taking the time to do your homework first can help you avoid costly mistakes. There are many factors to take into account to make sure your dress is not only the right fit for you, but that it ties in with the style and feel of your day. The time of year, type of ceremony and the venue are all key considerations, as well as the kind of entertainment you’re planning. To help give you some inspiration, we’ve asked local bridal boutiques to send in some of their favourite seasonal dresses...

Be upfront with the boutique about your budget. They will have worked with lots of brides with budgets of all sizes, so they can help you find your dream gown at a price you can afford. Most shops have sale rails or sample dresses, which can offer great savings. The dresses are usually in perfect condition but need to be sold to make room for new stock. Your bridal consultant will have worked with many brides of all shapes and sizes, so they will know what will work for your body type. Searching for your dream dress
It can be overwhelming when you first start looking for your dress. Ideally, before your appointment, do a bit of research to get some wedding dress inspiration as to what you want your gown to look like, whether it be in magazines, on Pinterest, or on Instagram. This gives your stylist more insight into your bridal vision and helps to progress the appointment in the right direction. Bring a small entourage whose opinions you can trust. Keep in mind that if a party is too large, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by a flood of differing opinions, making it impossible to make a decision. Finally, don’t try on too many dresses! After trying on 10–15 gowns, ensure that you carefully select the dresses you try on and avoid designs that are chosen solely to please your entourage. Pick a bridal boutique that best suits you and your style, not necessarily the one that is closest to you. It’s important that you research a multitude of different stores, exploring the designers that they stock as well as past customer reviews via their website and social media platforms.

Preparing for your appointment
Wear clothes that are easy to take off for your appointment, and don’t worry about your underwear. A skin-coloured bra is good, but not essential. The most important thing is that you’re comfortable! Remember, your consultant is there to help you, not judge you. You should book your appointment around a year before the wedding. Some gowns can take six months or longer to arrive in store, so that will give you enough time to try them on and get alterations done. We recommend booking your seamstress once you've purchased your dress, as they get very busy, especially for summer weddings. Check with your boutique about what sizes they stock. Most will have a gorgeous selection in a range of sizes for you to try on. Should a dress not be the exact size for you, your consultant can make the gown look like it fits you by clamping, pinning, or adding a panel if needed. They may also have hoops for you to try on with your dresses; these make the gown more comfortable to walk in and can enhance the shape of the skirt too. 69

Blush dresses have been around for a while, but in 2024 we expect to see even more of them, as well as other pastel colours. These hues are perfect for spring and summer nuptials or for those of you who don't want to go with the traditional white look. Black dresses are also growing in popularity. We expect to see more fitted gowns – think sleek, elegant, dramatic gowns in a variety of colours, perfect for winter and autumn weddings. If you're not feeling brave enough to go for a full black dress, incorporate a detachable overskirt into your gown that you can remove later in the evening, giving you two looks in one. Bows are also going to be on-trend, both small and big. Small versions will be adorning dresses and veils, and bigger bows will act as key features in the back of dresses. Having two dresses is a trend we expect to grow next year. Whether you opt for two completely different designs, an overskirt, or a two-piece, there is something out there to suit your style.

Beauty queen
We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty
H
annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.
Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 84
There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.
INTERVIEW
How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.
What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin
The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 85
Beauty
Q&A
A classic bridal look includes simple but impactful make-up and hair. Lashes play a big role in taking your make-up to the next level. Natural but subtly fluffy lashes with a lovely rose or goldentoned shimmery eyelid, lined with a dark pencil, softly smudged throughout the lash line, is the ultimate classic yet modern look. When it comes to hair, I believe that the hairpiece you choose to decorate your hair with speaks volume. Put some lovely fresh flowers all around the crown to create a classic vintage style, or dot them over the plaited or twisted hair. Don’t forget to leave out a few strands of hair to frame your face with. www.barbasboth.com
Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best
CLASSIC BEAUTY What’s a classic bridal look that I’ll love in my photos for years to come?
It’s important to take time for yourself when you’re planning a wedding. It can be easy to spend all your time making other people happy, and it can lead to you feeling burned out before your big day. I have three things that I recommend to our guests who need some TLC before their wedding day: Planning self-care: Book yourself in for a series of rejuvenating facials to ensure your skin is glowing and get some much-needed time out. Our expert therapists will tailor a bespoke ESPA facial for you and can also recommend a skincare routine tailored to your individual needs. Additionally, if you have the time, I recommend indulging in a massage treatment to relax your body and mind. These therapeutic sessions can help you unwind and alleviate any pre-wedding stress. Confidence-boosting and anxiety reduction: Whether it’s addressing pre-wedding jitters, wedding speech anxiety, or any other concerns, hypnotherapy is a powerful tool to help you and your loved ones find your inner calm and self-assurance. We’re excited to announce our forthcoming partnership with an incredible hypnotherapist who can provide confidenceboosting and anxiety-reducing sessions. Mindfulness and relaxation programmes: There are lots of incredible mindfulness and relaxation apps to keep you grounded during the hectic wedding preparations. ALL EYES ON YOU What is your top beauty tip? My top beauty tip for your wedding make-up would be to start with your skin! For your make-up to look absolutely flawless on your wedding day, you need to be well hydrated and have a good skincare routine. Even if you are prone to breakouts, redness, rosacea, or anything else, by investing in the proper care and treatments for your skin, you will have the best base to start your wedding make-up. I recommend visiting a dermatologist, beautician, or skincare counter to find out how you can optimise your skin’s appearance for your wedding day about eight to nine months before. If you aren’t sure who to go to, ask your make-up artist, as they will most likely have knowledge of how to best look after your skin or know a professional who does. It may be as simple as adding a serum to your skincare routine or just being more consistent. Putting the time and effort into this step will help ensure your wedding make-up is perfect. www.adriannaweddingphotography.com

Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be
M
odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.
People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.
How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.
What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding
process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

The Italian dream
Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village
F
or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.
on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.
RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY
The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.
Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.
FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.
LOOKING FOR MORE?
Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.
For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.
DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my

It’s warm and inviting with whimsy wallpaper, mix-match plush textiles and the prime centrepiece, the stunning copper roll top bath, is just waiting to be enjoyed.
