THE

WARDROBE WALLED GARDEN WEDDINGS

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury. The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party. The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire. The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event. A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of

style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available. The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day. An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”! We are now licenced for small ceremonies inside and larger ones in the Walled Garden.

EDITOR’S FAVOURITE I’ll be drinking Cotswold Cloudy Christmas Gin this Xmas and New Year. It’s made with a combination of nine botanicals, with a festive core of clementine and piney juniper alongside the likes of cardamom, lavender, grapefruit, bay leaf, black pepper, coriander, and angelica. As with the classic Cotswolds Dry Gin, the distillers use plenty of botanicals, meaning the gin has a lot of botanical oils in it, so when it’s mixed with gin, it’ll turn cloudy. It’s priced at £34.95 for 70cl and available from www.cotswoldsdistillery.com/products/cotswolds-dry-gin

WHATLEY MANOR WINS VISIONARY INITIATIVE EXCELLENCE AWARD PoB Hotels continues to advance its sustainability mission in collaboration with EarthCheck, a leading scientific benchmarking certification and advisory group for the travel and tourism industry. The hotel brand is proud to announce that it has achieved a prestigious silver certification from EarthCheck, symbolizing its unwavering dedication to sustainability and responsible travel. This achievement underscores PoB Hotels’ commitment to advocating sustainable practices across its array of hotels in the United Kingdom. In a recent survey conducted by PoB Hotels, it was revealed that a substantial 50% of its member hotels have identified sustainability initiatives as a top priority for the upcoming year. This significant percentage reflects their strong commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability. Furthermore, an impressive 30% of its member hotels have taken proactive measures by enrolling in sustainability accreditation programmes, enabling them to quantitatively assess their environmental impact and track their progress in adopting best practices for the environment. Sustainability is not only a priority for PoB Hotels’ members but also resonates with their esteemed guests and dedicated staff. A remarkable 45% of PoB Hotels’ members acknowledge that sustainability holds great importance for their valued guests, while 40% emphasize its significance for their loyal and hardworking staff. This collective recognition highlights the shared focus on critical areas such as community support, carbon footprint reduction, resource conservation, adherence to social responsibility principles, and ensuring long-term economic viability. Each year, PoB Hotels meticulously assesses its member hotels through an annual mystery guest inspection process, culminating in the prestigious recognition of three special categories. These awards are unveiled with great anticipation at the annual conference, serving as a remarkable opportunity for members to not only celebrate their achievements but

also inspire one another. This year, the deserving winners included Sue Williams at Whatley Manor in Malmesbury, Wiltshire who won the Visionary Initiative Excellence Award which recognises an individual or team who has gone above and beyond to show initiative and make a difference outside of the day-to-day business of their hotel. Whether this be by benefiting the local community, encouraging sustainable practices, or supporting the hospitality industry, this award celebrates what members do over and above their everyday roles. Sue Williams, one of the most well-respected hoteliers in the UK, has tirelessly campaigned for increased sustainability in UK hotels for almost a decade, generating tangible results across the sector, and inspiring both colleagues and guests along the way. Having recently stepped down from her role as GM of Whatley Manor now is the perfect time to celebrate Sue’s achievements, from winning a Catey for Whatley Manor’s sustainability achievements, to steering the PoB Hotels board as Chairman from 2020 to 2022, always championing environmental goals both for the brand and each member. eorgia and Nathan met at work. “A friend of ours at the Christmas party told me that Nathan had a little soft spot for me and the rest was history from that evening,” Georgia tells us. “Nathan asked me to marry him four years later in Bath which was the perfect place because it’s where he had taken me for our first ever weekend away. We spent an amazing day together enjoying a meal at The Ivy during the evening. On the walk back to our hotel room, Nathan got down on one knee and proposed which was a wonderful moment.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We loved the contemporary monochrome feel that The Pear Tree Purton offered – the interior looked so chic,” Georgia tells us. “It made styling our special day much easier because it set the tone for our minimalistic, timeless, black and white theme and we knew that everything would coordinate well.” Georgia and Nathan were seated at a top table with their parents and daughter and had a further eight tables of between 10 and 12 guests. “We used table numbers and printed Polaroid pictures of our guests for their place settings,” Georgia explains. “The pictures were of each guest with Nathan or myself and everybody loved them - it was one of my favourite things that I incorporated into our wedding day. Another personalised touch was the shortbread favours with our newly married surname printed on.” The couple chose Etiquette Events to dress the venue and

provide the floristry. “Beth and her team were amazing,” Georgia says. “Our pretty bouquets and flower arrangements consisted of Playa Blanca roses and gypsophila. We also had the bridesmaids’ bouquets placed in vases with ivory petals and candles scattered around them on each table as our centrepieces. Reusing the bouquets was cost-effective and meant that our bridesmaids had somewhere to put their bouquets while they ate.” Georgia, Nathan and their guests sat down to a delicious wedding breakfast prepared by the in-house team at the venue. “Our two-tier cake was a simple design with a bow tied around the middle and a personalised topper saying The Westwoods which was exactly what we wanted,” Georgia says.

LOOKING THE PART Georgia’s dress was the style Oliviana 2022 from the Blue Collection by Enzoani. “I added a long train and veil and it was perfect,” she explains. “Nathan’s suit was by Slaters. He wore the same one as both of our fathers and his best man. His shirt featured black buttons instead of white to look slightly different to the others and all of the male bridal party wore bowties.” The couple’s bridesmaids’ dresses were oyster-coloured gowns made to fit each of them. “Our flowergirl’s dress was teamed with a pair of ballet shoes which looked so cute,” Georgia says.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Georgia and Nathan hired the wedding singer Libby to perform during their ceremony and drinks reception. “She was fantastic,” Georgia says. “We also had a saxophonist play during the evening called Lizzie. Every time she performed, the dancefloor was full. She came as part of a package with our DJ booked through Cosmic Events and the two of them thrived off each other. Our guests still speak about the musicians now!”

“Our bridesmaid, Sophie, gave a personal and touching reading about us both from when we first met to our future together as husband and wife. My sister, Gemma, my maid-of-honour also gave a wonderful speech - she made us all laugh and cry! Both of them included Ed Sheeran’s lyrics because Nathan and I are fans. When we listen to those songs now, we think back to those precious moments.” - Georgia and Nathan

ammy and Graeme met while at university when they both went on a skiing trip to France. “We bonded over being beginners on the slopes and throwing some interesting shapes on the dancefloor,” they tell us. “I was immediately attracted to Sammy and, at the advice of my friends, I thought I was playing it cool by waiting an entire day to ask her out!” Graeme says. “For our first date, keen to impress, I planned a tour around some of the best cocktails bars – but I was so nervous that I arranged the meeting time for two hours before the music started in the first bar and then I missed her numerous hints for food while asking the waitress for more free popcorn! Still, it can’t have gone too badly, because by spring we’d become inseparable.” Sammy adds, “We got on so well, sharing the same humour, values and outlook on life so I knew he was a keeper.” The couple became engaged during a holiday to Turkey. “I proposed at Princess Islands where there’s a small church at the top of a large hill overlooking Istanbul,” Graeme tells us. “It was a relief that Sammy hadn’t guessed I was going to ask her because it was a wonderful surprise!” Here, the couple tell us all about their summer garden party wedding at Larmer Tree in Salisbury which was decorated with a forest green, gold and navy theme.

rang and Kurtis met at university. “I spoke to Trang at the annual ball,” Kurtis tells us. “We got on well and over the next few weeks, I discovered the fun and silly side of her personality.” Trang adds, “I thought Kurtis was funny when I first met him and as I got to know him more, the small things attracted me to him including his gentle, calm demeanour and love of animals.” Deciding to get married was a mutual decision for the couple following various discussions. “I purchased the engagement ring

and gave it to our dog to carry in a pouch on her collar,” Kurtis tells us. “I knew Trang would have been embarrassed by a big gesture in public.”

SETTING THE SCENE Cripps Barn was the first venue that Trang and Kurtis visited and as soon as they saw the interior, they both fell in love with it. “I knew that I wanted a venue with period features, and the ceremony room inside the barns looked amazing with a fireplace and statement

“Our suppliers were all so professional.” - Kurtis hanging wheel made with foliage,” Trang tells us. “Kurtis was also very happy with the venue and saw how excited I was when we were viewing it, so it was a very quick decision for us.” The couple’s colour theme was inspired by a scene in the Japanese animated fantasy film Spirited Away (Studio Ghibli), where the main characters pass through a narrow flower-filled alley. “I love pink and wanted to go for a soft romantic look for our wedding décor,” Trang tells us. “I showed images from the film to my florist as inspiration and had a discussion with her about what flower varieties would be available at the time of our wedding. We decided on using different types in various shades of pink and lilac including roses, delphiniums, clematis and lisianthus. For my bridal bouquet, I wanted lily of the valley because they symbolise purity, joy, love, sincerity, happiness and luck.” The decorations were provided by the couple’s chosen florist and included hanging tea lights in the ceremony room, a flower ring, a mirrored welcome sign and tapered candles placed on the dinner tables to create a cosy and classy vibe. “We used the names of our chosen flowers as the table names,” Trang explains. Kurtis hired a pink vintage Fiat 500 as their wedding car. “He knows how much I love the colour pink,” Trang says. “It looked very cute, especially in our photographs!” The reviews about the catering at the venue were so positive that the couple booked a food-tasting session before their big day. “We both loved the crispy skin pork roast and since it’s a dish that is popular in Vietnamese culture, that was what we chose to serve on our special day,” Trang says. Trang and Kurtis opted for a small two-tier cake. “I found the local bakery, The Village Cakery, on Instagram and spotted a design that I liked with sprinkled edible pearls that look quite similar to those on my wedding dress,” Trang says. “The cake tasted amazing and we even asked the venue to save a chunk of it just for us.”

“It was very windy when we had our couple portrait photographs taken which meant I ended up wearing Trang’s veil!” - Kurtis

LOOKING THE PART Trang chose the wedding dress called Aretta by the designer Eva Lendel. “During the earlier stage of the wedding planning, I spent a lot of time on Pinterest and this dress popped up on my feed one day,” she tells us. “I kept thinking about it and luckily there was a bridal boutique, Ellie Sanderson, near where I live that stocked it. This was the first gown that I tried on and none of the other ones made me feel as special. I was searching for a design that would appear timeless when I looked back and this classic silhouette with a fully beaded bodice was it!” To complete the look, Trang chose a Cathedral-length blusher veil, a pair of pearl-embellished wedding 39

shoes a dainty pearl tiara. Kurtis wore a light-brown and grey tweed three-piece suit using the waistcoat to differentiate from his groomsmen. “I wanted to fit in with the aesthetic of the venue and I also wanted my suit to look muted because the dress is more important!” Kurtis says. “Our three groomsmen were my best man and my two brothers who all wore hire suits similar to mine without a waistcoat. My youngest brother, Louis wore a child’s suit with the addition of a clip-on cravat.” Trang adds, “I wanted our bridesmaids to be happy and confident in their dresses, so I allowed them to pick the styles they wanted to wear from a selection. They agreed on the elegant sage-green colour so that was the shade we went with in different styles.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We both love movies made by Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation studio so we wanted to have Ghibli music for our special day,” Trang says. “It was difficult finding local wedding musicians who play it, but we were very lucky to have found the Aderyn String Quartet. Their example performance was amazing, one of the members even had Ghibli music for his wedding, so we knew we booked the right musicians. Their performance made me cry happy tears as I walked down the aisle to Promise of the World – I wanted my dad to slow down whilst walking to make the most of it!”

HOT TOPIC Our regional experts reveal all

SAY IT WITH WORDS

We’re newly engaged so can you advise us on choosing wedding stationery?

Jessica says: Wedding invitations are the first glimpse and set the tone for your wedding day. So much effort goes into the details of the day, your invitations should showcase this and create excitement for the first impression. Your stationery details play a huge part in communicating information and allow you to personalise your wedding whilst tying your entire theme together. How do you choose the stationery that is right for you as a couple? Choosing your wedding stationery can feel overwhelming with so many options out there so think about what you might need. This will vary for each couple based on your plans for the event, priorities and budget. Consider anything you might need from bridal party proposal cards to table plans and stationery for the day. I would recommend starting with the items that you need to include and then adding to these based on your budget and requirements, here are the most common: •Save-the-date cards •Wedding invitations •RSVP cards - will you include a return envelope with a printout, or opt for a website or email address for guests to respond to? •Information cards (with details of accommodation, wedding timelines and any other information about the day) •Order of service cards •Wedding menus •Seating plans and welcome signs •Place cards and table names or numbers •Vow booklets and speech cards •Thank you cards Decide on your stationery style and consider the importance of personalisation Do you want your stationery to look modern, minimal, fun or formal? Seek inspiration but stick to the styles you love, with your wedding day in mind. Trends will come and go but a personal touch will stand the test of time. Speaking to a stationer on a discovery call or at a wedding fair can help. Creating a vision board based on what you both love could also help you define your wedding style. Consider if further personalisation is important to you both. Examples of this could be including hand-drawn elements of something sentimental to you both like a venue illustration or map - the possibilities are endless! A cohesive look from save-the-date cards to the table plans and cake menus will set the tone. If this is something you would like to include then working with a stationer that offers this service could be the right choice 48

Meet the expert: Jessica Hole is the founder of Wiltshire-based Design Inspired By You which specialises in creating beautiful, personal wedding stationery and simplistic hand-drawn line illustrations. In addition to bespoke, Jessica offers a range of custom wedding collections, cards, prints, digital foiling and more. Fuelled by a lifelong passion for art and design, she aspires to create stationery that excites and compliments each individual. This is achieved by working closely with every couple to make sure they love the finished product and want to cherish it forever.

for you. I offer complimentary discovery calls where I get to know you both as a couple so that I can best advise. During the call, you can ask me as many questions as you like and hopefully come away with plenty of helpful information and an idea of price. Research price guidelines based on these factors and set a budget Without a clear budget in mind your stationery details can quickly add up so do your research by searching online shops and talking to wedding stationers. When setting a budget be mindful of the time that might go into DIY invitations from creating them through to the assembling stage. Consider where you might buy or create the design alongside confidently sourcing the right printers, card stock, envelopes and finishes. Your stationery budget will ultimately come down to time and your values. If beautiful, custom-designed stationery is one of the top priorities then expect to spend more for this service. Experienced stationery designers are very knowledgeable and will work closely with couples to help make decisions based on their budget and style. Plan your stationery timeline accordingly You’ll want to put together a rough stationery timeline. It’s important to give yourself enough preparation time to organise everything and avoid any last-minute stress so 12 to 18 months before your wedding is a good time to start researching your stationery options. For a bespoke design service, book in your slot for at least 12 weeks before you would like to send them out. Booking a discovery call with stationers you might like to work with is a good idea at this stage. Some designers are booked up a year in advance so if you know who you want to work with, book them in ASAP and work out the design details later to avoid disappointment. When you send out your invitations will vary for each couple. Send save-the-dates six to 12 months before your wedding. If you’re planning a destination wedding, or you need to give your guests plenty of notice to make arrangements then 12 months is better. For wedding invitations, aim to send these out a minimum of 12 weeks before your wedding date. If you haven’t sent save-the-date cards, I would recommend sending your invitations out at least six months in advance. To stick to your timeline, remember to order your stationery in advance and not when you want to send it out as these things take time. https://designinspiredbyyou.com www.facebook.com/designsinspiredbyyou www.instagram.com/designinspiredbyyou

Libby says: When it comes to deciding on wedding hair choices, whether it be a curly, straight, half-up, all-up or all-down style, it can be an overwhelming decision to make. Here are my top tips:

that you’re just trying to achieve a more polished version of yourself and not look like a different person. •Don’t make any radical colour changes before your big day. if you feel you want to look a bit different then talk to your hairdresser or colour consultant who can guide you towards a high-shine treatment or suggest a slightly brighter or richer colour. •We all love pictures for inspiration but don’t get distracted. Look for styles that suit your hair type. For example, if you have fine hair then search for images of styles for fine hair. •Choose hair accessories wisely because this is the finishing touch and can show your personality.

•Don’t book your trial too early. •Go with a style that you’re most comfortable with. If you usually wear your hair down, choose soft waves or a blow dry. Always remember

WHERE TO WED Sudeley Castle & Gardens in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire provides a wonderful historic backdrop for weddings set in more than 1,200 acres of grounds. Recently opened is the breathtakingly beautiful Orangery which, combined with the historic Old Coach House provides spacious dining and celebration areas to seat up to 150 people, with many more guests able to enjoy the large terrace and outdoor bar. The Orangery is a bright and timeless setting located in the unique surroundings of the 15th-century Sudeley Castle and Gardens, with views of the castle exterior and across the rolling Cotswold Hills. It’s the perfect space to bring the outside in while the Old Coach House boasts tall ceilings, stone floors and art-filled walls to transport guests back in time at this castle that has royal connections spanning back one thousand years. The award-winning gardens sweep around the castle and grounds and are known as being some of the most romantic in the Cotswolds. With ruins, and roses aplenty, there are awe-inspiring views and when the sun begins to set, the Cotswold stone of the castle and ruins magically glow. Blessings take place in the private on-site chapel which seats up to 130 guests. Queen Kathrine Parr lies entombed in the 15th-century chapel and is the only English queen to be buried on private land.

They can also take place inside the Tithe Barn ruins looking across the carp pond to the famous view of the castle itself for up to 100 people. Outdoor blessings can enjoy views of the Queen’s Garden, castle, ruins and chapel, for up to 150 guests. Ceremonies can enjoy the historic library as a backdrop for up to 50 loved ones, or they can also take place outside the Old Coach House. A drinks reception can take place in the Queen’s Garden that’s overflowing with roses in the summer. There are other gardens to choose from to ensure each wedding is bespoke. The wedding breakfast and evening reception can take place in the Orangery for up to 150 loved ones or inside the Old Coach House for up to 100 people. For larger weddings with more than 150 guests and for up to 400 people, there’s the exclusive North Lawn located on the private side of the castle for marquee weddings. https://sudeleycastle.co.uk/weddings www.facebook.com/sudeleycastle www.instagram.com/sudeleycastle

STATEMENT CENTREPIECES Big-day bakes are now taking centre stage at receptions with most wedding cakes placed on their own cake table in the centre of the room during the wedding breakfast before being moved to the reception to be cut. The taller the tiers, the more dramatic the statement. Claire Davey is the founder of Cake Daydreams based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. She’s a talented wedding cake designer who reveals how many of her wedding couples are opting for personalisation on their cake, for example, their newly married initials. Sugar flowers and buttercream florals are also proving popular, especially a more natural style on the cake to replicate the fresh flowers supplied by the florists.

We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty

H

annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.

Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 66

There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.

INTERVIEW

How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.

What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin

The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 67

Well grounded If wedding planning stress is getting the better of you, take this time-out with Ground Wellbeing’s Peigin Crowley

A

n award-winning spa consultant Peigin Crowley has spent more than 20 years crafting distinctive and transformative wellness products and treats for fivestar luxury properties. But in 2020, her attention shifted to the home. Experiencing the devastating impacts of stress, burnout, loss of identity and disconnection from the natural world, she embarked on a quest to create products and at-home rituals that could easily be incorporated into a daily self-care routine. Today her brand, Ground Wellbeing, continues to grow, focusing on craft and quality over quantity, sustainable business practices and the promotion of accessible and intuitive self-care for all. Committed to the power of touch, the brand’s rituals are created by Peigin to deliver carefully developed massage treatments through her years of work as an aromatherapist, where she gained a deeper sense of empathy, compassion and understanding. She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.

sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.

TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.

BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

EXPERT ADVICE

I’m getting married in February. What can I do to look after my skin over the winter months, so that it looks its best on my wedding day? Lou says: As the festive period approaches, try to remember it is important to stay hydrated and not overindulge in alcohol. Your skin is your biggest organ and it does show when it is dehydrated. Alcohol can exacerbate certain skin conditions, such as eczema and acne rosacea. Getting outside for some fresh air is just as good for you in the winter as it is during the summer. It helps to refresh your whole body - just make sure you use a moisturiser to protect against cold winds and blustery showers. It’s important to use an SPF during the winter, it may not feel as warm on your skin but the ultraviolet rays will continue to break down your skin cells regardless of the season. When you come in from the cold, don’t be tempted to have a scorching shower or bath - keep the water a gentle and warm temperature - if it is too hot, it can cause dry and patchy areas. Find yourself a good beauty salon and invest in regular facials every four to six weeks which will help to even out skin tone and texture and stimulate cell renewal. It helps you to have the appearance of smoother, fuller skin and can reduce the development of fine lines. Finally and probably most importantly, get yourself into a good skin care routine. In winter we tend to wear more make-up so make sure that you remove it every night and think of yourself as a battery that has to recharge overnight - your skin can’t breathe and repair itself properly if it still has make-up on. Sleeping in your make-up will lead to more fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin will also appear more dull and lifeless so double cleanse your skin a couple of times a week and exfoliate at least once a week. Using a toner before you moisturise will ensure that your skin is clean and your pores are closed before applying any heavier products. There are plenty of products on the market today and you must find the right ones for your skin type as well as your wallet. There’s no point in buying one that is too expensive if you use it sparingly and not to the manufacturer’s recommendation. I can recommend the Beauty Sleep Overnight Treatment from Neal’s Yard Remedies which is a lightweight serum helping to support your skin’s natural rejuvenation while you sleep. It also smells amazing! I also love Beauty Pie’s Wonderscrub Bio-Dermabrasion Face Polish which visibly renews skin and optimises translucency to combat dulling effects that occur over time - my face feels so smooth after I have used it. If I’ve got a client who has dry and patchy skin, I apply Polyglutamic Acid Serum by The Inkey List under the moisturiser. Polyglutamic acid holds four times more moisturiser than hyaluronic acid so it locks in moisture and helps the skin appear instantly smoother. Along with its silky texture, it is a game changer and perfect for make-up prep. I am a fan of Charlotte’s Magic Cream from the popular Charlotte Tilbury brand which hydrates, plumps, brightens, smooths, firms and revives the look of your skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. www.kaikoudabeauty.co.uk www.facebook.com/kaikoudabeauty

SKIN SOS Meet the expert: Lou Parmenter is a mobile beauty specialist and the face of Kaikouda Beauty based in Devizes, Wiltshire.

CURL POWER Meet the expert: Rebecca (Becky) Pattenden is the founder of Beauty and Hair by Rebecca located in Gloucester offering a wide range of bridal beauty and hair treatments. Can you recommend a hairstyle that looks romantic and will last all day? Becky says: Many brides want curls in their hair for their wedding day, which can look romantic and sultry. If you have long locks then trendy boho-inspired curls won’t last very long, you’d need a tighter type of curl to last for the duration of the wedding day and evening reception. A popular style that’s trusted to last is a curly bun which can appear soft and romantic by keeping loose tendrils hanging down the side of the face, and the odd few coming out of the bun. www.beautyandhairbyrebecca.com; www.facebook.com/Beautyhairbyrebecca 69

Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be

M

odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.

People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.

How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.

What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding

process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

The Italian dream

Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village

F

or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.

on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.

RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY

The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.

Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.

FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.

LOOKING FOR MORE?

Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.

For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.

DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my

tep into luxury at The Retreat, Elcot Park. Since its grand opening in June 2022 it has won many accolades including Britain’s Best Hotel by The Times and the Sunday Times, topping their list of the Top 100 Places to Stay in the UK. So, it was only right for us to check it out for our couples. Located between Newbury and Hungerford, this 18th-century country house hotel & spa is the perfect spot to unwind pre- or post-wedding whether you want a cocktail aside the heated outdoor swimming pool; or are ready to don your hiking boots and clear your mind on the close-by North Wessex Downs. You’re so warmly welcomed as soon as you enter the lobby lounge. Waiting at the reception desk was a lovely couple sipping a glass of wine checking in – yes you get a glass of the good stuff on arrival - and who was at their feet but two four-legged friends. Living the life of Riley, these pampered pooches were also looking forward to their stay in one of the several dog-friendly rooms. They even get a doggie welcome pack on arrival! With a crisp rosé in hand, I check into the Sutton Suite. An interior designer’s dream, sunlight pours into the room which overlooks the surrounding countryside. It’s warm and inviting with whimsy wallpaper, mix-match plush textiles and the prime centrepiece, the stunning copper roll top bath, is just waiting to be enjoyed. With a private mini bar, as well as raiding rights to the pantry (yes, there’s a pantry where you can help yourselves to snacks and drinks!), you’re guaranteed to switch off, unwind and feel truly spoilt. When it comes to food and drink, 1772 Brasserie offers a fine choice of contemporary dishes for all tastes. I chose crispy chilli squid followed by Berkshire lamb rump, cooked to perfection.
