ello, lovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your Herts and Beds Wedding! It’s officially the festive season, and you’ll find me playing a winter-inspired playlist with a hot chocolate in hand and a book in the other. Minus scraping the ice off my car in the mornings, winter is my favourite season. There’s something so satisfying about getting cosy, enjoying heart-warming meals, movie nights and Christmas! It’s a magical time with festive cheer, family time, jolly songs, nostalgic films, and plenty of celebrations. For those reading this in January, I hope you’ve all started 2024 with a bang like the fabulous firework displays that lit the sky as Big Ben struck midnight. January is a wonderful time of year! Some may disagree but it signifies new beginnings, which I find rather quite exciting. It’s so freeing to set new goals and ambitions. Just be kind to yourself, don’t add too much pressure and conquer your goals one step at a time. For many, winter will be full of celebrations after many pop the question over the Christmas and New Year period. So, if you’ve just received a shiny new rock, welcome to the world of weddings! We’re so happy you’re here and can’t wait to help you plan the big day. This issue is full of showstopping venues, expert suppliers and plenty of advice – we have it all! We aim to support you from receiving your fabulous engagement ring until you walk down the aisle while keeping it local. It doesn’t stop there, as we share popular honeymoon destinations for unforgettable trips worldwide. So what are you waiting for? Get ready to discover must-have dresses, showstopping accessories, catering inspiration, stunningstyled shoots and local weddings from around the region. Your dream team might only be a few pages away.

CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES

Offley Place is an esteemed luxury country house hotel nestled in the enchanting village of Great Offley that has marked a momentous occasion with 20 years of creating lasting memories and hosting weddings that celebrate love. The anniversary celebration was a delightful afternoon tea party where guests were treated to bubbly beverages and delicious cakes, creating an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie. In attendance were not only the current team and management of Offley Place but also dear neighbours, local councillors and past team members who had contributed to the hotel’s journey. However, the most special guests were the couples who had chosen Offley Place for their wedding. The venue’s director Nazlee Sabahipour says, “It was wonderful to catch up with married couples as far back as 2008! We were equally thrilled to celebrate with our Covid lovebirds, now marking their two-year anniversaries. It was heartwarming to meet their children and to witness the beautiful lives they have built together.” The manor house offers a range of enchanting spaces for ceremonies and receptions, each exuding its unique charm. The meticulously maintained parkland provides a picturesque backdrop for outdoor celebrations and photographs, adding to the magic of every wedding held at Offley Place. In addition, the site boasts 16 individually-designed rooms and suites, ensuring that couples and their guests enjoy luxurious stays. Discover more about the property: www.offleyplace.com
A PASSION FOR FASHION The team at Inna Voronova Bridal LTD is excited to announce the new 2024 Sensuelle collection is now available! Designer Inna Voronova operates out of St Albans and offers an extensive range of bridal gowns, eveningwear and flowergirl dresses, all highly desirable at a great value. The team can also produce custom-made and fitted bridesmaid dresses with many design templates and fabrics to work from. The company started running in mid-2021 when the impact of Covid-19 was causing many other highstreet stores to close. Inna took this opportunity to rent a space and get started. Inna says, “As a child, bright colours and fashion were always very high on the social agenda. As the high school proms drew closer every year, I would dream of arriving in a magnificent dress of my creation. As I grew older, my thoughts turned to marriage and the dream of being the centrepiece of my wedding. I used to draw and paint, which eventually turned into occasionwear. Four years of professional training and many positions in European bridalwear stores led me to the inevitable conclusion that I must open my own store.” The new collection will turn heads with stunning silhouettes, various necklines, delicate details and dream-worthy materials. There’s something for all types of brides: for those looking for dramatic styles to romantic looks and everything in between! Discover the collection: www.inna-voronova.co.uk 9

EDITOR LOVES When it comes to dream-worthy summer weddings, this stunning shoot coordinated by Charlie at The Stables Prop Hire comes to mind! The day was flawless with a bold colour palette paired with 70’s retro touches, modern styling and showstopping floral arrangements. The Enchanted Gardens provided the ultimate al fresco backdrop with plenty of space for weddings with the green fields and the intimate woodland gardens. The ice cream van from Ice Baby and the campervan at Lucky Penny Weddings provided picture-perfect backdrops throughout the day. One of my favourite parts was the gorgeous cake designed by Shaw Bakes. The beautiful design featured two tiers to match the colour palette, adorned with florals and perched on top of a wooden log. Taper candles and flowers inside glass jars surrounded the bake, creating a fun focal point inside the marquee. Both models looked fabulous, especially the bride who wore an elegant and classic Love and Loved Bridal gown. The talented Alexander Wedding Belles created a gorgeous half-up, half-down look with textured curls. Sheer Perfection Beauty perfectly applied her make-up to capture the model’s natural beauty. Flick to page 45 to discover more about the shoot and the talented team involved.
WINE AND DINE The Three Horseshoes in Letchmore Heath in Radlett has joined the stable of the award-winning pub company Peach Pubs, taking the number of excellent pubs owned in Hertfordshire by the business to three. Brand operations director at Peach Pubs, Chris Stagg, says, “The Three Horseshoes is a gorgeous pub that occupies a special place in the village and is enjoyed by guests from across the county. The property shares many of our characteristics while naturally fitting our ethos and approach. Recently extensively and sympathetically restored, it has a warm, inviting atmosphere and friendly faces serving excellent quality seasonal food and drink in the bar, eatery and garden. “We change our menus with the seasons and cook with quality ingredients from suppliers more used to supplying Michelin-starred restaurants than village pubs. Expect Aubrey Allen British beef, freerange Jimmy Butler Blythborough pork, Cornish lamb, native fish, seafood, and seasonal British food, which is part of our ethic. Guests will enjoy top quality, fresh, honest food, from classic gastropub favourites to modern healthy dishes, alongside weekend blow-out specials from our head chefs’ kitchens. We’re also serious about Sunday roasts, serving at least three choices on our weekly menus. The Three Horseshoes will continue to serve good food every day 10
with real ales, quality wines and cocktails that are perfect for popping in for a quick drink, a relaxed supper, a leisurely Sunday lunch with loved ones or a celebration dinner in the refined private dining room. Established more than twenty years ago, Peach has 21 other lovely pubs further afield in Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Warwickshire, each with its character and style. SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
Located in Welwyn Garden City, owner Laura Hall at Be Spoke Petals offers stunning floral designs from bouquets, thank-you gifts, buttonholes and more, all made from paper! Couples can incorporate their favourite book or a map of special destinations for that extra special touch before Laura creates pieces to match any colour schemes. She can even use second-hand pieces to be more sustainable and add plenty of character with the original pages. Paper florals are a lovely way to remember loved ones who may be missing from weddings, with a rose incorporated especially for them or a single bloom on display during the day. Laura can work with the baker to create paper flowers for a cake topper that matches your bouquets. Unlike fresh blooms, these beautiful flowers last long after weddings, and pairs won’t have to worry about preserving the pieces. We’ve teamed up with the company to offer readers one complimentary buttonhole for every bouquet ordered when they quote Your Herts and Beds Wedding before February 1st, 2024. For more information, email Laura to discuss the offer: laura.hall1309@gmail.com Check out: www.instagram.com/be.spoke.petals

Brook Farm is an idyllic outdoor wedding venue outside London in the gorgeous Hertfordshire countryside. Celebrations are held adjacent to a beautiful lake with a walkway over to an island, giving the wow factor that everyone secretly wants on their big day. The surrounding grounds feature woodland and arable farmland, so guests can enjoy the tranquil views and soak up the beauty of having receptions in the great outdoors. Couples will have exclusively use the stunning location with a tipi, marquee or yurt of their choice. Blessings can take place next to the lake at the Pine Tree Aisle, which offers a very natural but spectacular setting, or on the island for wow factor events. The local Parish Church, St Thomas a Becket in Northaw, is beautiful for those thinking about having church ceremonies. Couples
Tie the knot in South Hertfordshire
without an existing connection with the Parish are welcome to marry here if certain criteria is met. The venue’s package includes all of the basic infrastructure needed. The pairs choose their structure, caterer and decorations while the team organise the boring but essential bits like the luxury portable bathrooms, a reliable source of electricity that will meet power requirements, industrial rubbish bins, two security guards, a sound system, parking and coordination. The team will liaise with lovebirds before weddings to understand all plans and offer a ‘two weeks to go’ meeting to review details. Access is granted two days before celebrations, which leaves the day before for setting up internally and externally. As long as what’s planned won’t damage the lovely countryside, feel free to get busy! Get the bunting out, string some hammocks, choose table decorations, and have fun. Pairs must clear up decorations and fixings, so please consider this during the planning process.

Situated on seven acres of picturesque gardens, Ware Priory is a traditional Grade I listed building with contemporary touches and architecture dating back to Medieval times. The main Ware Priory building has much character and historical features, whereas Fletcher’s Lea offers a more contemporary feel. The riverside grounds provide the perfect backdrop to weddings and photography. Here, couples will find river life of narrowboats, swans, geese and ducks. The back lawns are well-kept and great for drinks receptions, and team-building games, while the wisteria archway offers a beautiful space for those iconic confetti pictures. Situated in what were the cloisters of the original Friary, the Priory Hall can accommodate ceremonies with 100 loved ones. With stained glass windows and a series of French windows that open onto the riverside gardens, the space is the perfect destination for the “I dos”
and receptions with 80 people. Alternatively, The Conservatory offers a bright and spacious interior with room to accommodate 100 people for the vows. The area was completely rebuilt during extensive renovations in the mid-1990s and is ideal for wedding breakfasts with 120 people or receptions with 140. The Hadsley Room, part of the Lady Suite, dates from the 15th-century and boasts a superb example of a crown post roof. The large refectory table used by the registrar to conduct ceremonies dates back to the 14th-century and is believed to be from the original Friary. The room is named after Robert Hadsley, who purchased the Priory in 1685, and his family owned the estate for the best of 200 years. The location is now popular for intimate weddings with 40 guests for ceremonies and receptions. Or why not exchange vows in the Riverside Suite with 200 nearest and dearest? Within Fletcher’s Lea, the larger suite can host wedding receptions with up to 160 guests for dining and 220 for buffet settings. The standalone building has all the catering and bar facilities needed.

REAL WEDDINGS
T
hese lovebirds first met around 10 years ago but lost contact over time. It wasn’t until Dom moved back from London in 2018 that he messaged Dan to meet for a drink – it all restarted from there! “Sense of humour is what initially attracted us to one another and as our relationship grew, it was obvious that we had so many similarities”, says Dom. He popped the question a few years later during a beach walk with their dog. He says, “There was little romance to it; I asked Dan if he fancied having a wedding and when he said ‘yes’, I replied, 'Oh that's good because I have a ring’. It was a surprise to Dan but nobody else. I roped in one of his best friends and her husband to find out his ring size, keeping quiet is not one of my strengths!” Here Dom shares details about their special day…
SETTING THE SCENE The couple’s main goal was to have a wedding that they would enjoy and remember, as well as guests too! Dom comments, “To us, this meant breaking down all traditions. Everyone told us we’d look back on our day and think of things we would do differently; we didn’t want to be in the situation. Luckily, looking back, we can say we achieved it!” Putting aside how beautiful the venue is, the amazing grounds and the peacocks attracted the lovebirds to Pendley Manor. They had the freedom to have whatever they wanted, how they wanted it. The goal was to create a wedding that seemed like a holiday to guests – the venue’s hotel and spa meant they could do that. Not only did the venue accommodate their needs, but the wedding planner was beyond patient with the pair and helped guide them through the unknowns of planning a wedding. The food and wine options were amazing, a no-brainer for the special day! Guests could choose from various food options, and everyone commented how excellent the dishes were. The pair thought they had over-ordered the wine, but not one bottle was left! Flowers are Dom’s favourite thing, and this is where they spent a large amount of the budget – for good reason! They went mainly with white roses and peonies accompanied by minimal green foliage. The ballroom at Pendley Manor is huge, and the pair were concerned about filling the space until their florist came to the rescue with large balls of white roses and peonies about 2ft off the table. This meant that everyone could still talk across the table and helped to balance the room with the ornate wallpaper and chandeliers. Single peonies and candles accompanied the stunning arrangements, while the top table had a 20-foot runner of roses. While the flower displays were large and impressive, the bridesmaids' flowers were simple, with each member holding bouquets of long-stem white roses. With the venue being so ornate and the number of flowers used, the couple kept other decorations to a minimum. One of the hardest parts of the planning process for Dom and Dan was the table plan not because they needed to keep people apart but mainly because all their friends knew each other – it was hard to split people up. The newlyweds used Rose Signage Co to produce all the signage and they helped to produce some lovely orders-of-theday, seating plans and name places in keeping with the white colour scheme with gold accents. Tables were named after their favourite music artists and the table plan had “Find your diva…” as the header. The couple had a logo designed for the wedding, which was a theme through a lot of the finishing touches. All the guests love to drink, so the grooms gifted each person a miniature bottle of 29

REAL WEDDINGS belvedere, most of which were empty before the speeches, and a shot glass as a keepsake. Dan’s domain was a stunning cake that featured a classic design that made a statement. It was also their way of adding colour to the otherwise white colour scheme. It was a traditional four-tiered bake with a waterfall of pastel colour macaroons with hints of gold leaf. This was all assembled on the morning of the wedding at the venue.
LOOKING THE PART In keeping with their timeless wedding, the grooms opted for traditional morning suits with duck egg blue waistcoats in keeping with some of the décor already in the venue. They both wore matching grey pin-stripe trousers with black tailcoats. Breaking tradition, the lovebirds got ready together with their wedding party. It took a lot of the nerves away as it was just like getting ready for a night out – the only stressful part was the state of the room at the end! The bridesmaids wore figure-hugging, Bardot white bridal dresses with a thigh-length slit as the grooms wanted them to stand out – plus, there needed to be some hint of traditionalism in there! Accessories were kept to a minimum, with strappy block heels and pearl studs.
TIME TO CELEBRATE One of the best bits of advice the couple had received is that there is a lot of quiet time to fill for guests. So, they hired a string quartet for the ceremony who played a mix of classical and modern pop songs. During the drinks reception, a fantastic singer performed while the DJ kept the celebrations going in the evening. A percussionist and saxophonist accompanied the DJ for the first half of the reception. Dom says, “This was a massive hit with guests! We had no concerns about our dancefloor not being full, but they really helped get everyone off their seats. The team helped to break the evening up and were super interactive with our guests. We paid for a late licence, so our evening ran from 7 pm to 1 am to keep the party going. There was also a selfie mirror with props, and our guests got to keep a copy of all the printouts to look back on.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS The lovebirds planned the wedding quickly, in under a year, so there wasn’t enough time to build up anxiety for the day. Their biggest concern was people not turning up but soon relaxed as most guests arrived the day before. The morning seemed to fly by; it was only as they were about to get married that the nerves crept in. Once the ceremony was done and they had a few glasses of champagne, the couple felt like they were at a party with friends. Dom says, “Having half of our wedding guests come back to our suite once the wedding was over was a moment that stood out! We nearly missed the early morning breakfast with our guests the day after. Another fun moment was when Dan’s dad told everyone that his favourite memory was of him singing to a bus full of people Stop by the Spice Girls as part of his speech. The whole room then proceeded to sing the chorus! “Every one of our wedding guests and suppliers contributed to our special day! The speeches were the right mix of funny and sentimental moments that we will treasure. We had everyone we cared about in one room, so many people have commented on the love that could be felt. It was a real shame that Dan’s grandparents were unable to come due to illness.”
HONEYMOON The couple had a mini-moon in Corfu straight after the wedding, which was great to decompress as the wedding blues crept in. The pair is excited to head off to South Africa for their main honeymoon, travelling across the country with a mix of safari, city breaks and beach holidays. 31

Christmas WISHES REAL WEDDINGS
Elle and Jason had a beautiful wedding at Offley Place in Hitchin Images courtesy of Angels With Dirty Faces Photography
T
hese love birds had known of each other through the grapevine, but swiping right on Tinder brought them together! Jason proposed in Barcelona, Elle’s favourite city, in a secluded area amongst the trees overlooking the city during a picnic. It was on the first day of their holiday, so they enjoyed the rest of the week celebrating. It was a complete surprise and Jason did well to get through airport security smoothly – his bag usually sets alarms off! Here the bride shares details about their special day… 41
We fell in love with The Conservatory at Offley Place! The two separate lounges allowed our guests to enjoy with roaring fires, which was perfect for our winter wedding.
My original bridesmaids’ dresses were blush with short sleeves for our spring wedding, so I decided to change these to green and red to match the season.
We had to push our wedding back four times; three times due to Covid and once due to our baby boy being due the month before! We officially got married in May 2021but our goal was always to celebrate with all our guests in attendance – this took place in December 2022.
Two of our best friends ‘officiated’ our ceremony! I’ve known one of my bridesmaids and her husband for 20 years and 10 years respectively. The ceremony was short but thoughtful, and it was lovely to have people who have known us for so long talk about our life together.
We allowed our guests to choose between five spirit shots for favours while sweets were given to the non-drinkers and kids.
We had tall floral arrangements and two smaller urns for our centrepieces, exactly how I envisioned. We wanted to ensure our guests could still see and talk to people across the table.
42
REAL WEDDINGS
I wanted to recognise it being so close to Christmas with nods of green and red paired white and gold, which was incorporated throughout the floral arrangements.
Our simple and rustic cake featured green and red flower accents as well as a golden retriever figurine to represent our dog Lola, who had already started ‘eating’ the cake!
Our tables were named after cities we had visited during our time together, and our table plan was a world map
For all the cheese lovers, we had a tower of different options for guests to enjoy!
The venue provided the catering for canapés, the wedding breakfast and the evening buffet, which all went down a treat with our guests. The team allowed me to add my favourite mac and cheese balls, which was a nice touch. We also wanted to give our guests the option between three meals for greater choice, which the staff were happy to accommodate.
I always wanted an A-line gown and the detailing on a Stella York dress drew me in. Although I wanted to tailor it by adding sleeves and dropping the back zip, I saw the potential at the first appointment. 43
I felt in awe on the big day; my make-up and hair were exactly how I’d envisioned! I loved showing off my dress for the second time.
Jason wore a blue morning suit with an ivory waistcoat to stand out.
We had a pianist during the ceremony and drinks reception, who played the Jurassic Park theme song upon my entrance and We Go To Together by Grease leaving The Conservatory.
A guitarist/singer played in the foyer and welcomed our evening guests. Our main evening entertainment was a DJ.
We both felt relieved, excited and happy that our son could be there with us – it had been a long time coming.

REGIONAL SHOOT
Bold and
BEAUTIFUL
This boho-styled shoot was inspired by the 70s’ with retro touches Images courtesy of Weddings by Alexandra Arlett
T
his shoot was created to inspire modern couples looking for a fresh and contemporary approach to styling their outdoor venue. The focus was on celebrating individuality and capturing the fun, frivolity and creativity shown throughout weddings. The team wanted the overall aesthetic to be a refreshing update on the popular bohemian style, keeping the mood light and relaxed. The retro disco vibe influenced the colour scheme, with a burnt orange and red palette pair with clashing pinks and yellows. Disco balls, a neon sign and oversized paper lanterns were a nod to the 70’s era, accompanied by a vintage VW Campervan and ice cream van. The bold floral choices, distinctive table decor and modern attire stood out among the green fields and the intimate woodland gardens. 47

Finally, a super chic ballgown can look stunning for a church wedding. Keep it simple with a luxurious fabric and first-class cut – you can’t go wrong with the Freda Bennet Tulsa gown. Long veils are still very popular and will continue to be next year. With a more simple dress, a deep tulle frill around the edge of a veil or with 3D petal appliqués will be fabulous. Statement earrings are a lovely choice, especially with an open neckline. Discover more about the boutique: www.morgandaviesbridal.co.uk

We can see some strong trends for bridal wear in 2024! The corsetstyle bodice is still trendy and will continue as a style into next year, especially when embellished with a modern take on appliqué like the Milla Nova Trinity gown. Super flattering draping will feature in many styles and is a great way of adding detail to a plainer dress. A stunning example of this is the Anna Kara Tamar dress. Brides love two-piece dresses with a long ceremony gown and a short party dress! Milla Nova’s Pixie is a great example; this look can also be achieved by pairing an overskirt with a shorter dress.

AMY RICHARDSON AT WHAT ALICE WORE
We’re seeing two distinct bride tribes next year: a swathe of those who love minimalist, tailored designs that create impact and those who love a maximalist approach in the form of modern beading, dramatic shapes and deep champagne tones. We love catering to both brides at What Alice Wore, and our collections reflect these aesthetics. But the common thread that runs through all gown choices is that they must be modern, dancefloor-proof and have just that touch different from collections you’ll see elsewhere. Our gowns are also highly customisable so that we can
truly deliver what brides desire. Are you searching for luminous ivory and clean lines? Our designers, Cizzy Bridal, Miss Scarlett and our newest signing, Luna Novias, may be for you. Dreaming of luxury shimmer and a dress you’ve never seen before? Zavana Couture, Zavana Bridal and Monreal will be the perfect fit. We look forward to welcoming you to our breezy St Albans boutique soon to help you find that dream gown. Discover more about the boutique: www.whataliceworebridal.com

Bountiful and romantic tailoring is hitting the sweet spot in 2024! Decadent floral and autumnal lace patterns richly embellishing the entire dress can seem overindulgent, but it simply looks amazing while striking an emphatically romantic chord. Another elevated way to show off how sexy and gorgeous you are is through a corset bodice. A mild obsession with this trend leaves the bride feeling secure but comfortable, sleek and sexy. Think separates for your after-party look! Leave those skin-tight sequin mini-dresses behind and make a statement with a second look that feels elevated enough to wear again post-wedding. This concept can be integrated in to the original dress design, or a great seamstress can simple recreate your gown to create great eveningwear!
Detachable sleeves and outer layer trains help free up the arms and legs to kick the shoes off on the dancefloor during the reception, ready to party. Remember, your wedding dress does not have to be white. More brides opt for colour, and bridal designers are give us more each season – think of bold shades and big silhouettes. Many brides might opt for classic and timeless silhouettes for their big day, but others want to be adventurous in a big tulle cupcake gown and pearl adornments. Throw on a cape or sexy bowtie appliqués, wear big jewellery and add a longer train – it’s your big day. Discover more about the boutique: www.inna-voronova.co.uk
TOP TIPS! We know how stressful finding your dream gown can be; there are so many gorgeous dresses with different styles, necklines, materials, lengths and embellishments to pick from – it can quickly become overwhelming! Shopping for your dream gown should be an exciting experience, so we’ve shared our top tips to help. While searching for inspiration online is helpful to see an extensive array of styles, it’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole very quickly. Our suggestion is to research local boutiques to discuss concerns and requirements; the experts will then be able to advise on what will suit you. Check out websites and social media pages before reading reviews to find out what other brides thought of the team and the service offered throughout the whole experience from start to finish. It can be tricky deciding who to bring along to your bridal appointment, but avoid bringing a crowd as everyone will have different opinions – it will quickly become overwhelming. We suggest inviting only a select few most important to you, such as your mum, grandmother, siblings or closest friends. Enusre to call ahead to check how many people the boutique allows. Many brides go into their appointment with a dress in mind but come out with something completely different, so be open-minded and try on a few different styles to see what suits your body shape and personal
style best. Always try a wild card as it might surprise you! Be open and honest with your stylist about your budget, who will help you select a beautiful dress that fits your price range. The worst thing you could do is fall in love with a gown only to discover that it’s well over your budget – don’t torture yourself if you can’t afford it. You must also remember to save some money for the accessories and alterations. It’s essential to wear nude underwear when trying gowns and avoid bright or bold patterns at all costs! If you’re planning to wear shapewear on the day, bring this along to get the full effect, as well as heels that are a similar height to what you’re after to see if alterations are needed. Remember the time of year when shopping for a gown. Think of breathable fabrics in summer like chiffon, crepe and tulle while avoiding long sleeves as you don’t want to be too hot on the day. For the colder months, Mikado, brocade and gabardine are perfect materials. Be prepared with a bridal wrap or jacket for outdoor pictures to stay warm. Some boutiques offer jewellery and accessories to finish the look; this is a great chance to try a few different options with the gown – especially regarding the veil. Here, you’ll see what works with the overall style and neckline. 53

We chat to Hannah Martin about her new book, Makeup, and all things bridal beauty
H
annah Martin is a world-class make-up artist to the stars and one of the most respected professionals in the industry. With 15 years experience, she works her magic everywhere from catwalks to masterclasses, as well as creating looks for industry giants such as L’Oréal Paris, Clé de Peau Beauté and SpaceNK. In February 2020, she joined Channel 5’s revamped 10 Years Younger in 10 Days as its resident beauty expert, where her life-changing makeovers were an instant hit with audiences. A YouTube sensation with more than four million views, Vogue hailed her the queen of radiant skin and smoky eye tutorials while her social channels are a treasure trove of easy make-up tips and tutorials for novices and seasoned professionals alike. Now, Hannah shares her expertise in a new must-have book: Makeup. CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with her at the time of its launch to tap into her wealth of knowledge on bridal beauty and skin prep know-how. Congratulations on the launch of your book. What can you tell us about it? Thank you! I’ve always been passionate about helping people do their make-up and understand how products work and how to master different application techniques so it was the logical next step to put everything I’ve learnt over the last 20 years onto paper, creating a resource people can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of as and when they want to. I hope the result is an easy-to-read guide for those interested in make-up.
Some of the work you’re most famous for is creating flawless bridal make-up for Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice. Are there any elements of these royal looks that our brides could apply to their own for the big day? I want to help all my brides achieve a beautiful make-up look that will last all day and make them feel amazing. I’ve mainly worked on the basis that bridal make-up should be timeless and not dated by trends. I suppose the looks I’m best known for are more on the natural side but I have a little secret: natural make-up doesn’t mean minimal, it’s just make-up that allows a person’s natural beauty to shine through. It means a sheer base so you can see your skin, eye make-up that frames without overwhelming, and lip and cheek colours that enhance the tones naturally present in the skin. Brides need their make-up to last all day. How can they make sure it doesn’t slide of their faces by the speeches? It starts at skin care. I love rich plumping moisturisers but on a wedding day it’s advisable to use light layers of water-based hydration so your skin is moisturised but not slippery, meaning products have a better grip. Light layers of concealer and foundation worked in well lasts significantly better than thick layers, and setting powder is essential. I know a lot of brides don’t like to use powder but a little under the eyes, around the nose and chin will lock the base in place before you finish with a spritz of a setting spray. Powder applied with a brush will set lightly, powder applied with a sponge or puff will set even more effectively. Just be sure to use a setting spray that’s made for longevity and not for rehydration because you could inadvertently be adding more moisture, which won’t help it to stay put. 66
There’s an emerging trend for brides to switch up their attire from daytime to evening bash. Can this be applied to make-up too and how can they transform to a party look quickly and easily? I love this trend but I do remind brides that it’s the one day to be as present as possible and not spend all day in the make-up chair, so I like to suggest quick and easy tweaks. The easiest after a quick base touch up is to add a bold lip. A bright red is so fun for brides who like the idea of the impact but don’t want to wear red all day or for the all important first kiss. My other go-to is a smoky eye. The addition of a darker shadow all over the lid and up through the crease with a sparkle shadow pressed on top makes for the most beautiful soft, smoky eye that shouldn’t take longer than about half an hour. I usually do this while the hair stylist redoes the hair.
INTERVIEW
How can our readers ensure their skin is in tip top shape providing the perfect canvas for their W-day make-up artist? The best thing you can do is drink water! Yes cleansing and exfoliating are extremely important but being really well hydrated from the inside out can make a whole world of difference to the skin. I also advise my brides to go easy on the sugar intake in the week leading up to the wedding and to avoid excessively salty food the night before, as this can result in puffiness and water retention on the big day. What I strenuously suggest brides don’t do is try facials or treatments before the wedding that they’ve never tried before. So many times I’ve been confronted with brides who have either had a reaction or their skin has broken out as a result of a treatment they’ve not had before. If you’re in the habit of having facials then by all means continue but don’t have one, or indeed any other new treatment right before the wedding, if you’ve never done so before, as they could have a negative impact on your skin. In your new book you talk about the tools needed for the job. Is there a set of basics that we should all have in our make-up bags? Tools are key when it comes to make-up application. I’m an avid believer in using your fingers if you’re happy to do so but if not then decent brushes make all the difference. It’s a bit like cooking: chopping an onion with a bent, blunt knife is a real challenge but like slicing butter if you have a good quality kitchen knife. The same goes for make-up brushes. As a make-up artist I own hundreds but not everyone needs that many. A base brush for all cream and liquid products (like skincare, foundation, cream bronzer, cream blush); a powder brush (for powder, blusher and bronzer); an angled brush (for eyeliner and eyebrows); and a classic eyeshadow brush are the key essentials along with a decent eyelash curler. A smoky eye is one of your trademarks. How can this be adapted to suit a bridal look? When I create a smoky eye for a bride I tend to keep the shades I use a little softer than I would for a red carpet moment just to ensure the eyes aren’t lost in too much darkness. I’m obsessed with soft bronze shadows all over the lid with dark brown kohl smudged along the lash line and a few lashes added for a little extra lash density. If bronze isn’t your tone then any muted shade like grey, heather, mink, mocha, mushroom are all gorgeous for a soft smoky eye.
What is it that makes you so passionate about make-up and skincare? I’ve always loved the creativity and art of make-up. I never tire of trying new products and experimenting with trends but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised that actually what I love most about my job is helping other people feel good about themselves. I’ve had the privilege of seeing complete transformations with clients over the years, there’s something so magical about lavishing someone with your time, care, attention and artistry and seeing someone morph from shy, reserved and lacking in energy to beaming with confidence thanks to liking what they see in the mirror. I can assure you the make-up itself is only partly responsible for the transformation, it’s more about the personal connection made between artist and client. What’s been your career highlight so far? I’ve been lucky enough to have many but one of my greatest accomplishments is my book, Makeup. I’m not an academic and writing has never come easy. In fact I gave up on my dissertation at university because it was all together too much for me, and I ended up getting a diploma instead of a degree. So, to think almost 20 years later I managed to get my words out and actually wrote a book, a book that was number two in the Sunday Times best-seller list no less, is extraordinary to me. What’s next for you? Now that’s a question! I absolutely love what I do and I feel extremely grateful that that’s the case. I loved my time on 10 Years Younger so would always be open to another opportunity in TV but I’ve also loved working with brands on various product development moments and collaborations so I hope to do more of the same. I’d love my own brand one day but the market is so oversaturated at the moment so it won’t be any time soon. Makeup by Hannah Martin is published by HQ, Harper Collins. Available in hardback, £22, and in eBook and audio formats. You can follow Hannah on Instagram at www.instagram.com/ hannahmartinmakeup, and on YouTube at www.youtube.com/BBProHannahMartin
The lips are going to get a lot of attention on the big day! So, what do you suggest to make them perfectly kissable with colour that has staying power? A gentle scrub is imperative the evening before the wedding or at least three hours prior (to allow for any redness to subside). A simple sugar scrub will gently exfoliate the lips so they feel soft and smooth allowing lip balm to absorb efficiently. More importantly lip products will sit seamlessly without any visible cracks or flakes. Be sure to apply balm first thing in the morning as part of your cleansing routine to start the hydration process then again at the very start of your make-up application to make sure the lips are as soft as they can be. Blot away any excess before lipstick is applied. I prefer to line the lips first with long-wearing liners, then fill in with a long-wear liquid lipstick – I find sheer layers best for both comfort and wear. Then, for a soft finish, I press on a creamy lipstick and a tiny bit of gloss so the lips look full and plump. The liquid lipstick underneath acts as an insurance and the colour lasts for hours. A touch-up kit is essential and I always suggest my brides remove all remnants of lip colour, apply some balm, blot, then reapply for the freshest look. 67
Well grounded If wedding planning stress is getting the better of you, take this time-out with Ground Wellbeing’s Peigin Crowley
A
n award-winning spa consultant Peigin Crowley has spent more than 20 years crafting distinctive and transformative wellness products and treats for fivestar luxury properties. But in 2020, her attention shifted to the home. Experiencing the devastating impacts of stress, burnout, loss of identity and disconnection from the natural world, she embarked on a quest to create products and at-home rituals that could easily be incorporated into a daily self-care routine. Today her brand, Ground Wellbeing, continues to grow, focusing on craft and quality over quantity, sustainable business practices and the promotion of accessible and intuitive self-care for all. Committed to the power of touch, the brand’s rituals are created by Peigin to deliver carefully developed massage treatments through her years of work as an aromatherapist, where she gained a deeper sense of empathy, compassion and understanding. She is also dedicated to addressing women’s health issues. Here, Peigin tells us how to tackle wedding planning stress and build an effective self-care routine amidst a hectic schedule.
sure you’re both on the same page. Always remember the why – remind yourselves why you’re getting married in the first place. Focus on the love and commitment you share rather than getting lost in the details of the event.
TIME TO RECONNECT I think it’s really important to understand how we wake into the day, and how we go to sleep at night. Our first 10-15 minutes of the morning as we wake up into the day are crucial in terms of our attitude, intention and breathwork, as well as just being kind to ourselves. Likewise, at the end of the day, using aromatherapy products to help you slow down, helps invite sleep and gives you a moment to reconnect with yourself. So, those would be the two most important times of the day to remember to look after yourself, then you can build your self-care routine from there. When we’re busy, we can tend to forget to look after ourselves. We need to recognise the importance of self-care and make it a nonnegotiable part of our daily or weekly schedules. Understand that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity.
BETTER TOGETHER The first thing to say is that it’s natural to be overwhelmed and stressed in the run up to your wedding. It’s a really important day and you want all your friends and family to enjoy it. Acknowledge these feelings with each other and book out time each week to go on a walk or do something together. Take some time out where you don’t speak about the wedding at all! Do something else to take your minds off it, relax and focus on each other. Prioritise self-care routines individually and as a couple: go for a massage, have a treatment together, or just relax and de-stress. Even just running each other a bath and making sure you acknowledge the stress and really looking after each other is helpful. Communication is key, so voice concerns with one another and make

FINISHING TOUCHES
I want to look and feel my best on our big day, what advice can you share?
We want bespoke jewellery that incorporates nature for our wedding, how can we achieve the best results?
I have an excellent knowledge of skin as a beautician and make-up artist, but I also believe in starting from the inside out. As a 2024 bride, I’ve started with vitamins and marine collagen. While having a good skincare routine all year round is essential, having professional facials is an excellent way of improving your skin. The treatment cleanses, rejuvenates, hydrates and brightens your skin better than you can achieve at home. Most wedding dresses expose some of your upper body. We often focus on our face and forget other areas, such as the neck and décolletage area when it comes to skincare. Not treating these spots can lead to a mismatched and uneven skin tone compared to the face with an overall duller look. I believe in treating the skin as one, which means giving these areas the same level of care. Don’t forget your arms and back if they are exposed too. So, use regular scrubs and keep moisturised! With your skin looking fabulous, you’ll look and feel your best with beautifully applied make-up.
At Notion Jewellery, we create handmade woodland-themed jewellery from castings of actual trees and plants from The Chilterns area. A wide selection of silver and gold pieces are available, but jewellery can also be created from an impression of any particular tree or plant. So, whether you opt for us or a similar company, it’s essential to consider several factors. It’s crucial to keep plant material fresh by sealing the pieces in a plastic bag and sending it to the supplier quickly for casting. Leaves are best picked in the spring and early summer, while twigs can be used anytime. Remember, you may need to plan depending on the season. Leaves can be reduced in size once an impression is taken by 3D scanning and printing at a very high resolution before casting. Additionally, jewellery can be made by repurposing your sentimental heirloom pieces. It’s essential to remember that it may take several months to create an individual piece from start to finish, so remember to allow plenty of time to create your perfect wedding jewellery.

BAKED WITH LOVE What flavours would you suggest for our Christmasthemed wedding cake? Christmas always makes me think of spices and warmth; many cake flavours instantly make you think of this special time of year. Here are a couple of my favourites... •Orange, apricot and ginger sponge filled with apricot conserve and vanilla buttercream. The hint of ginger makes you think of gingerbread, and the orange gives it a lovely citrusy hit. •Spiced carrot cake filled with orange buttercream. You get the warmth of the ginger and cinnamon spices in the cake combined with the carrot and walnuts, while the orange buttercream breaks up the sweetness without overpowering the sponge. FLORAL FANTASY We want to incorporate flowers throughout our venue’s styling. Do you have any suggestions? Flowers can really add beauty to an already fabulous venue. Think of focal areas where your guests are going to be looking at you and your partner, such as your ceremony, top table, cake cutting and instead of a photo booth, especially if you’re on a strict budget. Forget pew ends and gift bouquets, decorating sweet tables and chair backs, think beautifully presented urn arrangements that can frame your ceremony area. These can really give the wow factor, and then be repurposed to frame the top table (if you’re having one) or create a photo area for your guests. As these designs are made in either moss or floral foam in a container, you can then gift the flower arrangements to your nearest and dearest at the end of the day. Another design to amaze your guests is a freestanding moon gate or broken arch. Create a framed area for the vows with glorious flowers and foliage between fairylights, glass baubles, tea lights, lanterns and candles. It’s not a legal requirement to stand in front of the registrar’s table, only that they have a nearby table. If you’re having a celebrantled wedding, you can arrange the ceremony to your liking. This arch can then be moved during the day as a photo area for loved ones. For an additional fee, your florist can move the arrangement to another location for the reception to be enjoyed. CAPTURING MEMORIES We’re on the hunt for our dream photographer; what should we keep in mind? If you have a few photographers in mind, don’t make a decision purely on the shots you see on their website. Ask to see a full wedding gallery from start to finish. You’ll want to see images of all the special moments throughout the day, like the couple getting ready, the ceremony, the first dance, the reception and detail shots. Photographers cover several events throughout the day in different lighting, so decide how well they cover all of these key moments, not just the couples’ photos. A good photographer will always be happy to show you this and answer any other questions; you only have to ask. Natalie Martinez | Natalie Martinez Photography www.nataliemartinezphotography.com 72

We’re getting married this winter and want to transform our venue into a winter wonderland. Do you have any suggestions? Creating a winter wonderland wedding in the UK can be a magical and memorable experience. Choose a property with large windows to capture the beauty of the winter landscape. An estate, barn, or a cosy historic building with fire places can provide the perfect backdrop. If you’re feeling adventurous, an outdoor ceremony with a snow-covered landscape can be stunning – weather permitting. Embrace a colour palette of icy blues, silvers, and whites. Use snowflake motifs in your invitations, table settings, and centrepieces to capture the time of year. Incorporate twinkling fairylights, candles and faux snow to create a wintry ambience around your venue. Create a cosy atmosphere with soft, warm lighting and choose music that resonates with the season. Serve hot mulled wine and hearty comfort foods for guests to enjoy followed by a winter-themed wedding cake adorned with snowflakes or edible silver accents. Send guests home with winter-themed favours such as custom-made snow globes or personalised ornaments so they can look back and remember the special day. BLOOMING BEAUTIFUL Why choose faux flowers over fresh flowers for your wedding or special occasion? We create beautiful floral displays at Sarah Stuart Flowers using luxury faux flowers. While we also love working with fresh flowers, these are a great alternative as the blooms are incredibly long-lasting and won’t wilt, whatever the weather. Why have your bridal bouquet for a couple of days when you can enjoy it for many years? In 2023, 80 per cent of our weddings used faux flowers in some form. Table centrepieces can be created with fresh greenery and incorporate faux flowers; we offer this on a rental basis, reducing wedding flower costs without compromising style or elegance for your event. The blooms require no maintenance or pruning. It also offers a perfect solution for anyone who struggles with allergies. Many faux stems are now made with recycled plastics or fabrics, therefore kinder to the environment. These florals are incredibly versatile and can be used in various settings and occasions. Plus, it’s cost-effective in the long run. While the initial outlay may be more expensive, they’ll last many years. Can you believe scented faux flowers will soon be a thing? Influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel reveal their hair care tips for grooms-to-be
M
odel, TV personality, and influencer Eyal Booker and his brother Ariel Booker have launched Wavy, the Everyday Curl Crème for men. Designed to maintain and enhance curls for all hair types, the everyday cream uses high-quality ingredients and lasts for up to 30 days when used daily. Our grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Eyal and Ariel to discuss male hair care and the next era of men’s grooming. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their hair in the run-up to the big day? Don’t do anything drastic or try a new barber or hairdresser; the key is to get your haircut a week or two before the wedding so that if anything goes wrong, there is still enough time for your hair to grow back to your preferred look. It’s important to communicate with your hairdresser about what it is you’re looking for, and then you can go in for a slight touch-up a couple days before the wedding.
People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our hair? Always look for brands that are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable. Looking at their packaging is crucial; find a brand that uses sustainable packaging and works towards an eco-friendly future. Most brands are making a conscious effort to be more sustainable and typically mention this on their websites.
How do you recommend styling my hair for the big day? The big day is all about you looking and feeling your best. Go with whatever makes you feel most confident. Our recommendation is to go for a timeless style; your pictures are going to last a lifetime and will remind you of one of the best days of your life, so it’s important that you choose a style that you’re happy with.
What do you consider to be the biggest development in men’s hair in the past five years, and what do you think will be the next big trend? We think it’s within the formulations that are being used. In the past couple of years, consumers have trusted brands, and they weren’t asking any questions. More recently, men have become more aware of the good and bad ingredients and, as such, are looking for them in the products they use. If a brand is quiet about their formulation and/or what they’re putting in their products, the likelihood is that their ingredients are probably not the best for your hair. One in four men in their 30s experiences male pattern baldness. What tips or advice can you give to help men look after their hair and delay this onset? We have noticed that a lot of this comes down to the lifestyle that men have. It’s crucial to make sure that your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs, as this impacts how the body reacts to hair growth. We suggest that males experiencing baldness try taking supplements that strengthen their hair and help it grow back to its potential. This will slow down the balding

process and give men a chance to keep their hair looking its best and, most importantly, feeling its best.

Hilton’s signature hotel brand is set to open its first resort in the Seychelles. Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island lies just over 130 kilometres south of Mahé on a pristine atoll fringed by palm forests and protected by its own lagoon and coral reef. Much of Platte Island’s surrounding scenery remains untouched, meaning guests are likely to see native Hawksbill turtles, eagle rays, manta rays, and whale sharks. Sitatunga Private Island is a new water-based safari camp in the upper reaches of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Built on a raised, wrap-around private deck, Sitatunga Private Island can accommodate four adults in two private suites. Constructed almost entirely of recycled materials, the camp offers couples a ‘slow safari’ that is as sustainable as it is luxurious. The suites come complete with an indoor lounge, bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a deck with outdoor lounging and seating areas, as well as a private pool with views over the lagoon. Dereck Joubert, the CEO of Great Plains, tells us: “Sitatunga Private Island is unlike any other Great Plains property, pushing the ecodesign boundary in a remote region in Botswana whilst also offering the highest level of hospitality and accommodation. It is also one of the few locations in the world where one can still see sitatunga, the rare aquatic antelope. Head out on a boat to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos all day, every day.” Discover more about Sitatunga Private Island and its offerings at www.greatplainsconservation.com/safari/sitatunga-private-island

The Italian dream
Louise Prance enjoys her inaugural visit to Italy, discovering the delights of Sardinia with a stay at the impressive Forte Village
F
or many, when you think ‘honeymoon’ you think white sands, clear seas, sunshine and an abundance of rest and relaxation. But, if you’re anything like me, sometimes you need a little bit more – enter Forte Village, Sardinia. A self-confessed travel addict with eternal wanderlust, I’m ashamed to say that my recent visit to Sardinia was my virgin voyage to Italy. And what an error or judgement that was. Just a hop, skip and a very short two-hour flight from the UK it was clear from touch down that Sardinia lived up to the Italian dream stereotype and then some.
on offer. For me, the focus on health and fitness was an instant draw, there are, wait for it, a whopping 11 pools, a gym, tennis club – the resort offers exciting events such as lessons with tennis legends – football pitches, boxing arena and climbing wall – which induced a severe bout of FOMO from my climbing-obsessed partner back in the UK. If that’s not enough, there’s a plethora of fitness classes available in the ‘FIT-ZONE’ including the likes of HIIT and yoga.
RESPLENDENT IN ITS BEAUTY
The focus on fun doesn’t stop at the exercise offerings, with there being something for all the family. Heading off on a Familymoon? The kids club feels like a separate resort in itself with its own swimming pool, Mario’s Village and, my personal favourite, life-sized Barbie Dreamhouse. Fancy some family activities to enjoy together? The on-site Go Karting and Bowling tick that box nicely.
Those looking for the aforementioned honeymoon vision of sun, sea and sand would be hard pushed to beat this beautiful destination. Giving off Greek island vibes, Sardinia is resplendent in its beauty, with the softest white beaches, dream-like crystal clear oceans, and an impressive history – there are Roman ruins at archaeological site Nora and a network of underground grottos some 530 million years old at the Caves of Is Zuddas, to explore. And of course, there’s the food. With Italy known for its cuisine, Sardinia didn’t disappoint, and neither did the culinary offerings at Forte Village – a resort set in a whopping 50 acres in the South of Sardinia.
FITNESS FIRST While of course exploring the island is a must-do recommendation, when you stay at Forte Village, you really won’t feel like you’ve missed out if you decide to stay put. Village by name, village by nature, the resort emulates a quintessential small Italian town, with residents getting around either by foot or on the quaint bikes provided, where the 21 restaurants (with three boasting Michelin stars) being just the beginning of what’s

own space, being just a stone’s throw from the white sandy beach and breakfast restaurant.
LOOKING FOR MORE?
Back to newlywed life, Forte Village’s spa is its shining glory. Loved by the Italian National Football Team, the Thalassotherapy Circuit was perhaps one of the most memorable spa experiences I’ve ever had. Offering six Thalasso pools, the circuit is designed to follow a pre-designed route to generate optimum health benefits. My personal favourite? Pool number one was a magnesium-heavy sea oil pool heated to a balmy 38c. Wearing an inflatable neck pillow you’re encouraged to simply float in the water, which is effortless thanks to the high salinity. I challenge anyone to leave the pool after the recommended 20 minutes feeling anything other than heavenly. The further five pools offer similar blissful experiences, which were only surpassed by the spa treatment I received after. The treatment rooms are set amongst the trees in a private tropical garden, with floor-to-ceiling (one-way) windows providing an awe-inspiring setting. My full body mud treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and relaxed, ready to take on another day in paradise.
For me, a getaway is not complete without a water-based excursion, and Sardinia offers ocean activities galore. However, always up for trying something new, I jumped at the chance to be taken out on a Jeep safari up the Monte Santo di Pula. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we bumped our way to the top of the mountain to take in some wow-factor views. We were then met by local Shephard Roberto, who did a demonstration under the forest canopy of how his family continue to make pecorino the traditional way. Coupled with some delicious red wine and authentic Italian fare, it was a memorable experience. It’s safe to say that Italy didn’t disappoint, with the Sardinian town of Cagliari being a wonderful final destination to explore. And while it may have been my first venture to the country, it certainly won’t be my last. Intoxicated by the setting, people, food and culture, Sardinia, and Forte Village, is a destination that should rank highly on your honeymoon shortlist.
DOWN TIME The endless fitness, spa, food and activity choices aren’t the only things you’ll no doubt have the pleasure of deciding upon at Forte Village, with the accommodation options as wonderfully expansive as the rest of the resort offerings. There are a selection of hotels, suites and bungalows dotted around, each with their own restaurant and pool. The decision between beach front, private garden, terrace, or balcony is where the difficulty will end, with each choice being as decadent as the next. My private garden bungalow was the perfect place to relax in my
