I love this time of year, not only because I am a magpie who loves anything that sparkles, but because it’s an opportunity for me to create a magazine full of seasonal splendour! Whether you’re putting the finishing touches to a micro wedding this winter (our hot topic feature offers tips for this) or planning a larger affair for next Christmas (in which case our venue section is a must-read), it’s always fun for me to compile our end-of-year issue. I asked some of my favourite wedding photographers in the regions to send me their wintry real weddings so this section is packed with fab festive ideas. There’s also glittery accessories, fairytale wedding dresses, fashionable groomswear and big-day beauty, along with much more, so I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did compiling it, and I’ll see you next year. Until then...

WASING PARK OPENS FOR WEEKEND STAYCATIONS
YOUR ESSENTIALS
Exclusive-use wedding venue Wasing Park is, for the first time, welcoming guests for weekend staycations to the 4,000-acre Berkshire estate. Visitors can enjoy walking trails through the woods, yoga in the on-site studio, forest bathing, relaxing by the fireside in the Stables Bar and an à la carte menu prepared by the highly trained chefs. Guests can cook their own woodfired pizza or firepit-flamed venison burger for lunch under the guidance of Executive Chef, Stuart Tyler, at Wasing's unique woodland venue - there might even be time for a little foraging too! The Grade II listed old estate rooms include The Granary, The Smithy (a former blacksmith’s shop that’s now a large boutique bedroom) and two-story room, The Dovecote. Owner of the Wasing Estate, Joshua Dugdale, tell us, “Until now, it was only our wedding guests and corporate clients who were able to stay with us, so we are delighted to be able to offer weekend breaks for the first time. Over the years, many visitors have asked us about returning for a staycation but this hasn’t been possible until now.” Prices start at £195 per room per night on a bed and breakfast basis and breaks are offered on a minimum two-night basis. MACDONALD BERYSTEDE HOTEL & SPA UNVEILS NEW WEDDING PACKAGES
Macdonald Berystede Hotel & Spa has launched a series of flexible wedding packages created to help couples tie the knot following lockdown. The four-star venue has responded to demand and in line with government guidelines, now offers intimate ceremonies with small groups of loved ones with the potential for a larger reception at a later date. These ‘sequel weddings’ have been particularly popular, with wedding coordinators working closely with couples to plan not one, but two special days. Demand is also growing for ‘shift weddings’ which mean couples do not have to compromise on numbers, hosting one group of family and friends for the ceremony and another for an extended wedding breakfast the following day. Bookings for larger weddings in 2021 and 2022 are on the rise and the hotel is seeing increased bookings for up to 400 guests in its Windsor and Eton Suite. Couples are wanting their celebration held under one roof rather than having to liaise with multiple suppliers, and the hotel can easily and quickly adapt its offering in line with changing government guidelines. For more information and to book, visit www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/our-hotels/southengland/ascot/macdonald-berystede-hotel-spa www.instagram.com/macdonaldhotelsandresorts Turn to page 25 to read more about this wedding venue.

Christmas
Notley Abbey in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire was the beautiful backdrop for Kimberley and Rob's festive day Images courtesy of Yellow Door Wedding Photography

REAL WEDDINGS
Kimberley and Rob Barlow married on 20th December 2019 at St Peter & St Pauls church in Ellesborough followed by a reception at Notley Abbey in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
K
imberley and Rob met in The Red Lion Whiteleaf pub in Buckinghamshire where she was working behind the bar and Rob visited with a friend who was a family friend of hers. "We didn't speak much at first," Kimberley tells us, "but after my shift, I had a Facebook friend request pending!" Rob proposed to Kimberley in Venice on the 8th December 2018. "We had always wanted to visit there and thought that by doing so in December, it would be beautiful and festive," Kimberley says. "Rob took charge of booking the flights and hotel, surprising me with business class flights (which we nearly missed due to waking up late because we had both been at our Christmas work parties the night before!) and a room upgrade on arrival at Hotel Danieli. He got down on one knee in our hotel suite and asked me if I would be his wife, Mrs Barlow. I was so surprised that I didn't answer immediately because I couldn't believe it!"
SETTING THE SCENE
“Seeing my dad for the first time in my dress was the moment when I started to feel emotional. I loved having him walk me down the aisle.” - Kimberley
Kimberley and Rob both grew up in Buckinghamshire and had always wanted to get married there. “We had looked at other wedding venues in different areas, but as soon as we visited Notley Abbey, we knew it was the one for our special day,” Kimberley says. “We decided to have our ceremony in the church that I was christened in before hosting our reception there.” As the couple lives in London, they wanted to involve the capital city in some way so chose two vintage London buses to transport guests from the church to Notley Abbey. "One of our favourite things to do as a couple is visiting the pub so we added a surprise pub stop for our guests after the ceremony en route to Notley Abbey, where everyone enjoyed mulled wine, mince pies, and sausage rolls," Kimberley explains. Because the couple chose to marry in December, it meant that they were able to enjoy Christmas touches. “Our colour theme was a light grey and silver palette reflected in many of our decorative details,” Kimberley says. “We knew that December would be a cold month and that the fires at Notley Abbey would be lit, so we wanted to create a cosy feel. We filled a basket with blankets for our guests and attached a cute sign saying ‘to have and to hold incase you get cold.’ We filled the venue and aisle in the church with tea lights, candles and light-up trees. Our centrepieces consisted of pine cones and glass baubles that were filled with flowers and tea lights and suspended from bare twigs, and our favours were homemade mulled wine spice kits because after all, who doesn’t love a glass of mulled wine at Christmas!” 29

REAL WEDDINGS “The attention to detail from our amazing lead photographer Graham from Yellow Door Photography and Sian, who came along to assist him, was wonderful. A few close family friends helped us set up the venue on the morning of the wedding and Graham captured these beautifully. Also, having a videographer there to capture the entire day was something that we both are so glad that we booked. It's so nice watching it back after the special day.” - Kimberley
The couple chose their top table flower arrangements that included pine cones, berried eucalyptus, silver eucalyptus, pale pink and ivory roses and gypsophila. Their tables were named after their favourite holiday destinations to reflect their love of travel, and they displayed several photographs from these holidays on each table with the top one named Venice, after their romantic Italian proposal. “We made our table plan by showcasing a map of the world with our guests' names written on luggage tags and each one pinned at our holiday destinations,” Kimberley tells us. Rob's mum, Angela, made the three-tier wedding cake that consisted of the couple's favourite flavours - Victoria sponge, lemon cake and a fruit cake as a nod to Xmas. "Not only did it look amazing, but it also tasted delicious," Kimberley tells us. "The middle tier featured a grey marble design with twigs and iced flower detailing to tie in with our tables. Angela knows how much of a fan of Tottenham Hotspur F.C. that Rob is, so she added a subtle cockerel to the side of the cake!"
LOOKING THE PART Kimberley wore a dress by Enzoani called Laura that was a fitted strapless style featuring a sweetheart neckline, elegant embellishment and a beautiful lace train. "I always thought that I wanted to wear this style of dress and after visiting several bridal shops and trying on various styles, I knew this gown was the one as soon as I tried it on," Kimberley says. "I paired it with a stunning cathedral-length veil trimmed with lace and crystals. My designer bridal shoes by Freya Rose added some sparkle and I also wore a pearl necklace that belonged to my grandmother, and a pair of delicate teardrop earrings." Rob had his suit tailor-made and decided on a navy design teamed with a grey waistcoat to stand out from his groomsmen. “Rob always wanted to have the suit that he was to get married in tailor-made and it fitted him perfectly,” Kimberley tells us. “He finished his look with a white shirt, silver-grey paisley-print tie and pocket square, a pair of smart brown shoes and a pale pink rose buttonhole. Our groomsmen wore a similar look with ivory rose buttonholes.” The couple's bridesmaids looked elegant in their light-grey, floor-length halterneck dresses with silver beading teamed with strappy sandals, a bracelet and a pair of delicate teardrop earrings that were a thank you gift from the couple.
TIME TO ENTERTAIN With Kimberley being half-Scottish, the couple wanted this reflected in their day so they booked a Ceilidh band for the evening entertainment. “It was brilliant! All of our guests said how much fun it was and it encouraged them to get on the dancefloor,” Kimberley tells us. “The music was so upbeat and everyone was dancing which was wonderful to see. We also had a DJ after the band who played a few Christmas songs to add to the festive spirit!” The little ones didn't miss out either. Because Kimberley works as a nanny, it was important for her to have children involved in the wedding and to keep them entertained so they hired a couple of nannies to attend with toys and planned a movie with popcorn as the night went on. “Our guests who had children were able to drop them off knowing that they were in safe hands having a great time which meant that they were able to enjoy the party. They were all so grateful that we had given their children some thought,” Kimberley tells us. The couple hired a photo booth for the evening which helped create their guest book. “It was so nice to look back at all the funny photographs of everyone,” Kimberley says. 31

achel and Dan met online and enjoyed their first date at a coffee shop. "I wore my gym clothes and Dan turned up in shorts and a t-shirt, it was all very relaxed," Rachel tells us. "I was attracted to Dan's easy-going nature and he liked my sense of humour and the fact that I was always smiling." The couple became engaged after just a couple of months of dating. "Dan told me on our third date that he was going to marry me, and kept telling me it frequently after that!" Rachel says. "So after a couple of months, I called his bluff and said 'OK then, let's do it!' We booked the date and venue before we had even chosen the ring. When we had found the ring, we announced our engagement to our families and friends."
SETTING THE SCENE
Rachel Presnail, 34, married Dan Wells, 33, on 31st December 2019 at Monkton Barn in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.
The couple loved Monkton Barn as soon as they first saw it. "The main attraction for us was the flexibility of the venue because we wanted to have a big party and Monkton Barn allowed us to stay there until 3 am which was very important because it was New Year's Eve!" Rachel tells us. "I also wanted a relaxed, rustic-looking venue so it was perfect.” The couple chose a winter wonderland theme decorated with navy and silver touches. “Our centrepieces were a mix of glass milk bottles brimming with gypsophila and glass vases filled with silver and navy baubles and fairylights,” Rachel explains. “We also had empty wine bottles that we sprayed silver each holding a candle.” The table plan matched the couple's invitations with each table named after a country or special place that they had visited together and was presented, along with each guest name, on a sheet of paper featuring a navy and silver background suspended from a large wooden board using string and pegs. “As favours, we gave each guest a 50ml bottle of whiskey, gin or vodka, displaying a homemade label. We wanted to buy everyone a drink so thought that this would be a good idea and we gave the children and non-drinkers a nonalcoholic option,” Rachel says. The couple's guests were treated to canapés during the drinks reception, a hog roast as the wedding breakfast followed by a choice of two puddings, a cheese tower made with sausage rolls and pork pies, and slices of pizza for the evening buffet. “Our three-tier cake offered guests a fruit cake option, a delicious chocolate layer and a Victoria sponge cake,” Rachel says. 35

“The cake topper was a Sylvanian Families bride and groom which were toys that I absolutely loved as a child.”
LOOKING THE PART Rachel and Dan opted for plenty of green foliage, ivy and holly in their flower displays and Rachel's bridal bouquet contained thistles, gypsophila and green foliage. This was the finishing touch to her open-back lace dress which she chose for its vintage style. “My gown was my something new and my veil that was borrowed from my mother’s friend’s daughter which matched it perfectly was my something borrowed. I also wore a silver diamond necklace which had been given to me for my 21st birthday as my something old and my engagement ring contained a sapphire so became my something blue. Because our wedding was in December, I also wore a furry jacket while we were outside to keep warm.” Dan hired a navy three-piece suit for himself and his three groomsmen. “Dan’s waistcoat was silver while the groomsmen wore navy ones,” Rachel says. “Dan and his best man Russ had silver ties while the groomsmen wore navy ones and my brother, who gave me away, also wore a navy suit and the same buttonhole as the groomsmen. Dan’s buttonhole included a thistle as a nod to our seasonal day.” The couple's bridesmaids wore navy floor-length dresses with a lace design around the collar. “They all looked so beautiful and were very emotional just before we all walked into the ceremony,” Rachel tells us.
"We had two black Friesian horses pulling a closed carriage that collected me, my brother and my bridesmaids from the Crowne Plaza hotel and transported us to the venue. After the ceremony, myself and Dan went for a short ride which was wonderful." Rachel
TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple had a violinist play traditional Irish music during their drinks reception and hosted a music quiz during their wedding breakfast. “The winning table received the prize of a magnum of prosecco which they loved and after dinner, we had a band who then DJ’d until the early hours,” Rachel says. 37
“My mum gave a lovely speech. I know she was nervous but she delivered it beautifully and it was really heartfelt and very special. - Rachel

REAL WEDDINGS Claire Burton, 35, married Peter (known as Pete) Gardner, 34, on 30th November 2019 at Bucks County Museum followed by a reception at Waddesdon Hall.

laire and Pete met just as each of them was ready to give up on the world of online dating. “Without knowing it, we both agreed to our date with the thought of giving it one last go, and if it didn’t go well, we would forget the swiping left and right for a while!” Claire tells us. “Luckily, after matching on Tinder, we met up and instantly felt relaxed in each other’s company so quickly arranged a second date! Within a few weeks, we both knew that we had found something special. He was a kind, generous and genuine person and he liked the fact that I had a passion for my job, loved superheroes, and am funny!” The couple became engaged on Christmas day. “The proposal was a few months in the making,” Claire says. “Pete had recently started to learn to play the piano, rehearsing one of my favourite songs to sing, Stand By Me by Ben E. King. On Christmas morning, he gathered our close friends and my mum at our house and announced that we would be performing it to them! Afterwards, he got down on one knee, produced a ring and asked me to stand by him forever! I said ‘yes’ of course! Christmas is my favourite time of year, so he knew that it would be a perfect time to propose.” Here, Claire tells us about their festive day.

We knew that we wanted to stick to our budget so we looked at different venues that didn’t have expensive hire charges. I stumbled across Waddesdon Hall online, it’s a local village hall in the centre of Waddesdon and is beautiful. When we first viewed it, we knew that we had found the place for our reception.
Finding the ceremony venue was a little trickier but we settled on Bucks County Museum because the room was a blank canvas and the venue is located in the centre of old Aylesbury with its quaint cobbled streets.
A special feature in the ceremony room and the reception venue was the large Christmas trees so we styled each one with traditional white decorations and lots of sepia photographs of us and our children which I have kept and put into an album. Every tree had a home for the Christmas season with the venue keeping one, two coming back with us, and the final one gifted to my mum.
Pete is from Edinburgh so to reflect this, we opted for plenty of green foliage and thistles in our beautiful wedding flowers. My bouquet was stunning, and our flowergirls loved their fairy wands! Our on-the-day coordinator, Rebecca Moore of The Wedding Spark, expertly arranged our flowers around the reception venue in beautiful displays.

REAL WEDDINGS
I knew that my dress was the one for me as soon as I tried it on and it was the only one that made my bridesmaids gasp when I stepped out of the changing room. I knew I wanted a lace gown and the corset gave me a shape that I loved. It also had a romantic train and sleeves - an essential on my list for a winter wedding.
We spent a few month s collecting various pie ces of furniture to provide a comfy chillout area, and hired sev era l tables and stools to complete the look, including a very coo l vin tag e suitcase table! Decoration and centre pieces were something tha t I thoroughly researched. We wante d something natural, and not too expensive, so we spent a few mo nths collecting gin an d wine bottles, and cu glass vases and bowl t s from which we ma de lanterns using str ing s of fairylights.
I chose a pearl belt that my seamstress attached to the dress, and a one-tier simple veil to complete my bridal look.
Pete wore a traditional tartan kilt with a navy jacket. His groomsmen wore the same and so did my nephew, who loved trying on a kilt for the first time!
The best women (Pete’s sisters) wore navy dresses with matching tartan scarves. I knew that I wanted our bridesmaids in green so chose forest-green styles which they loved.
“Because our wedding took place the day before advent began, Pete came up with the brilliant idea of giving everyone an advent calendar which seemed to be a real hit with the kids and grown-ups alike!” - Claire

Our entertainment consisted of two main parts. While our guests were enjoying a drink and we were having our photographs taken, we entertained them with a pop-up pianist called Elliot Porter. Our guests were able to request songs which he then performed beautifully. Later, we had a live band, The Hoops, who were fantastic!

REAL WEDDINGS Nicola Harrison, 32, married Nick Roberts, 31 married on 4th Jan 2020 at The Tythe Barn in Launton.
The Tythe Barn was the romantic backdrop for Nicola and Nick's January celebration in which they embraced the Christmas theme Images courtesy of Monika at MT Studios
A WINTER'S
tale

N
icola and Nick met when they were teenagers and became inseparable. They got engaged years later when Nick proposed to Nicola in Japan. "He had taken me on a business trip which turned out to be a very memorable holiday for us!" Nicola tells us. "Nick had spent all week trying to find a quiet, dry, uncrowded place to propose before settling on a hastily booked Japanese onsen - a traditional bathhouse – that we visited towards the end of our time there. We were wearing full kimonos, right down to the white toe socks! As a couple who had been together for most of our lives, it wasn't a surprise, despite Nick's efforts to keep it a secret, but the setting and timing did come as a bit of a happy shock."
SETTING THE SCENE The couple decided to have their wedding in January because they wanted to invite family to join them from around the globe so combining trips with the Christmas holidays was preferable. “We had attended so many summer weddings and wanted to create something different. The idea of a warm, cosy, family orientated atmosphere was exactly what we wanted,” Nicola says. “We needed a venue that would be large enough to accommodate our loved ones while keeping everyone inside, warm and entertained.” The Tythe Barn was the perfect choice for the couple, with interconnecting rooms and open spaces, and real fireplaces providing a romantic ambience. It was already styled with Christmas trees and fairylights offering an atmospheric and seasonal feel, so the couple added festive touches with handmade Christmas crackers filled with Lindt chocolate balls and fairylights displayed in jam jars and glass bottles as centrepieces. "We were fortunate that my sister-in-law is an accomplished wedding florist in Australia with an eye for natural and national flowers," Nicola tells us. "With her help, we were able to create a range of simple and elegant arrangements using gypsophila which we presented at the end of each row of seats during the ceremony, and reused as table centrepieces and arrangements to decorate the venue with." Nicola and Nick seated their guests in groups of loved ones who already knew one another. "Our top table included our bridesmaid and groomsmen and their partners, whilst our parents hosted tables of friends and close family members, leading to plenty of fun and laughter that outshone some of the tables of younger groups! We wanted to create the atmosphere of a family Christmas dinner and we certainly did this," Nicola says. "Our place names were beautifully presented within origami cranes as a nod to our Japanese engagement and my mum made hundreds of mini ones to create a beautiful curtain, and also crane place name holders which were wonderful."
"Little did we realise how many of our friend's weddings would be affected by the events of this past year, and that our special day would be one of the few to be unaffected. We were so glad to have gathered so many loved ones together as possible because it was the last time that so many of them have been able to see each other in person this year. For that reason, among others, it will always be a very special day." - Nicola and Nick.

REAL WEDDINGS
The couple chose a carvery option that guests could eat and enjoy at their own pace. "The food was phenomenal," Nicola tells us. "We are both well-known for our love of puddings so the caterers did an amazing platter of three not-somini treats for each guest which were delicious! Because the team at the venue have such a close relationship with the caterers, Absolute Taste, they performed a fun routine for us. The carvers were preselected by us ahead of the wedding and then these unsuspecting guests were quietly taken away after the speeches and given a quick overview of their responsibilities, dressed in aprons and chef's hats and given an entrance fanfare ahead of the delivery of the food! We chose Jingle Bell Rock as their entrance song, and they rose to the occasion, joined by some of our younger family members, in a dancing parade into the dining room.” Later in the evening, the couple and their loved ones enjoyed pizza from the built-in pizza oven at the venue and guests were also treated to a chocolate wedding cake (to reflect the couple's love of chocolate) and Nicola's mum had baked a fruit cake.
LOOKING THE PART Nicola chose a simple A-line bridal dress by the designer Stella York that she had customised. “I had the neckline altered,
and sleeves and extra sequins added to the lace detailing on the bodice for a little bit of extra sparkle that looked fantastic twinkling under the fairylights,” Nicola says. “My bridesmaid looked stunning in her full-length navy gown, and Nick looked so handsome in his tailored blue suit teamed with brown shoes and a belt.” The couple allowed their groomsmen to wear their own suits, although asked them to stick to dark colours, and they all had matching ivory pocket squares and ties.
TIME TO CELEBRATE Nicola and Nick provided a box of fun props for their guests to dress up in and take photographs using an old phone on a selfie stick. "Some of the most memorable photos came from here," Nicola tells us. "Nick's parents had previously attended a wedding in America where they had been introduced to the national sport of beer-pong. Knowing our friends were also semi-pros at this sport, and with the permission of the venue, we were able to erect a table in one of the side rooms and several battles ensued! We also had a fantastic DJ who kept everyone on their feet throughout the evening and because it was dry outside, we were able to provide seating and blankets which allowed guests to sit around the chiminea and enjoy being outdoors."

HOT TOPIC Our regional experts share their top trends for micro weddings
ICING ON THE CAKE
We are planning a micro wedding for spring 2021 so can you give us some ideas for a wow-factor cake? Meet the expert: Clare Hartland-Brown is the owner of Betty Bee Bakes, a bespoke wedding and celebration cake company based in Old Windsor, Berkshire.
Betty Bee Bakes | 07989 980 041 https://bettybeebakes.wordpress.com | www.facebook.com/bettybeebakes
Meet the expert: Eva Cockrell is the designer behind Euthymia Cakes, a luxury bespoke cake and sugar floristry company based in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. Eva says: If you’re planning a stylish small wedding and have your heart set on a large cake then why not consider a dummy tier? They look like the real thing and are very cost-effective. Alternatively, one slightly taller tier can be topped with your favourite sweet treats including meringue kisses, or created with a dramatic drip design that looks fabulous in photographs. Finally, sweetie tables are still trending and if you speak to your venue, they may serve your guests without them having to leave their seats. Single-tier monogram cake serves six guests.
Cake featuring autumnal flowers and a gold leaf design serves 15 guests. Pearl cake serves 12 guests.
Clare says: If you’re planning a small yet perfectly formed wedding then there are plenty of options for a spectacular wedding cake other than the three-tiered design that might not get eaten. A smaller cake doesn’t mean less impact. Choose your decorations wisely and it will still look as stunning as a larger design. A four-inch tier on top of a six-inch tier will serve 20 finger-sized portions after the coffee and speeches when guests are already full. If you have your heart set on a threetier design then why not serve it as dessert? Consider having cupcakes that look so cute displayed on a vintage-style cake stand. A cupcake tower offers a more contemporary look and the cupcakes can be themed – I have made superhero ones for a wedding before! They are quick and easy to set up which is ideal for the social distancing measures in place. If you’re not so bothered about the cutting of the cake then consider having a cake buffet. Brownies, cookies, scones and a Victoria sponge cake are perfect for this, and I could bake a selection while you ask your guests to get involved and bring something along (you’ll need to check that the venue is happy with this idea first). Other popular ideas are a doughnut wall, candy cart and dessert trios served instead of cake. Finally, consider going savoury with a cheese and pork pie tower (which is what I did at my wedding). Fill cake stands with your favourite cheese varieties and provide individual plates of crackers and small bowls of pickles – you’re set to enjoy a wedding day that’s truly unique and no less memorable for being just you and your nearest and dearest.

EXPERT ADVICE
ALL THAT SPARKLES
Meet the expert: Alison Cooper is the owner of bespoke jewellery brand Alicia J Diamonds based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, offering a personal jewellery design service, creating pieces for life’s special moments that will be cherished for a lifetime. We are newly engaged since the lockdown period so can you give us some tips on buying an engagement ring together?
SPRING BRIDE
Meet the expert: Melissa Clare is a professional bridal, fashion and editorial make-up and hair artist based in Berkshire. Please can you give me some ideas for my spring wedding make-up and lashes? Melissa says: Ombré eyeshadow is a beautiful choice for a spring wedding. This is where you transition the colours on your eyelids across a few gradients creating a beautiful blend of tones, allowing you to add in a popping shade with some more natural ones to enhance your eye colour. Popping shades of purple blended with hazel browns look beautiful on green eyes. Mix orange and pink tones with bronze for blue eyes and try burgundy and golden shades for brown eyes. To keep your skin looking fresh, start by spring cleaning your products and investing in a new beauty regime. Whilst it’s important not to dramatically change your skincare too close to your wedding date, it’s important to adapt to how you treat your skin with each season. As winter tends to wreak havoc, it’s important to keep it looking hydrated. Pay close attention to moisturising dry areas around your nose and forehead, and keep your complexion glowing with a regular enzyme peel and exfoliator. If you’re on a budget, instead of throwing out your winter foundation, try mixing it with a small drop of face oil which will tone down a heavier foundation and add a sheen, perfect for a glowing spring wedding. When it comes to blusher, think fresh and rosy pinks and use a soft pink highlighter on your cheekbones. Choose creme products if you want your skin to look radiant, or use a powder if you have oily skin.
Alison says: This is an exciting time and a great thing to do together. Firstly, gather online inspiration. We recommend that clients make a mood board of rings that they love. It’s such a personal choice – some customers want the classic round brilliant diamond while others find that a rectangular emerald-cut stone is for them. We use this inspiration to discuss your options, advise on price and talk about diamond characteristics and design tips. Secondly, remember that diamonds are about more than carat (the weight of the diamond). Customers often think that the carat is the main marker of a diamond’s worth but there are four important elements cut, clarity, carat and colour. The value, beauty and rarity of a diamond is about getting the right balance of all of these. An engagement ring is intended to be worn every day for life so it’s important to put the wearer’s style first. If you’re choosing together, then this is much easier. If you’re choosing for your partner for a surprise engagement then start by looking at her current jewellery. Is it mostly gold or silver? Ideally, the metal should match what the wearer already wears. Is the style simple or bold, chunky or delicate? If you’re choosing one together, choose something that suits your usual taste. For something a bit different, a gemstone engagement ring rather than a diamond could be an option. Lifestyle is important, too. If you’re very active, then choose a durable metal such as platinum. Remember that the personal service of buying a bespoke engagement ring adds to the magic of it so choose a trustworthy jeweller who will guide you through the process. This is important when designing a bespoke engagement ring to ensure that you get the best possible ring for your budget. Finally, think about the finishing touches. You can add personal touches that hold meaning to both of you, for example engraving a special date, name or symbol into the ring, or adding a birthstone or gemstone which holds meaning. You can even incorporate the metal or stone from your parents or grandparents’ ring into your new design. Top tip: We always recommend asking to see a GIA report before purchasing a diamond. As an independent third party, the GIA issues trustworthy and accurate reports so that buyers know they are getting great quality and a fair deal. At Alicia J, we only deal with GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certified diamonds. Alicia J Diamonds | 0333 987 4985 | www.aliciajdiamonds.com | www.instagram.com/aliciajdiamonds

THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress
n w o g F
ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.
Dave Benett for Getty Images
What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.
80
What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an
FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!
It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.
What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.
Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.
Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.
Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw
her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com
“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews
“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey
Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker
GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve 84

Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson
EXPERT ADVICE
Beauty
Q&A Our experts answer your questions FESTIVE GLAM Please can you give me some fun ideas for my Xmas-themed wedding make-up and lashes? Meet the expert: Nicolette Smith is the face of The Beauty Coach based in Buckinghamshire. She’s a qualified beautician and nail technician offering a variety of skincare and make-up services. Nicolette says: Firstly, it’s important to determine your make-up style. Do you love bold lipstick, or do you prefer the natural make-up look? There are so many ways to approach the Christmas theme and it depends on the style of dress and the setting. You could opt for the Snow White look using a quality foundation for flawless skin, creating the backdrop for dramatic red lipstick, minimal eye make-up, white highlighter in the inner corners of each eye and long sultry tapered lashes with a hint of rose blusher on your cheeks. Or, you can play around with this look by using grey, silver and white eyeshadow, or even subtle shades of blue. Add some sparkle either on your lashes – you can buy false lashes with gems – or dab silver or gold eyeshadow in the centre or inner corners or your eyelids to highlight them. There are even gold and silver mascaras and eyeliners available to add some extra sparkle. Your winter bridal look can also be understated and natural. Enjoy the focus on your eyes by keeping your lip colour and cheeks very natural with a hint of pink, and using complementary shades on your eyes to bring out the colour of them. A good quality liner and lashes help frame them. You could add very natural sheer-looking false lashes that elongate and accentuate your natural ones.
FRESH-FACED
Please can you give me some fresh ideas for my spring-themed micro wedding make-up and lashes? Meet the expert: Laura Carroll is a Buckinghamshire-based makeup artist specialising in weddings, events and commercial work. Laura says: Make-up for this season is all about achieving glowing skin after the long cold winter months. When preparing your skin ahead of your wedding, ensure to add in some extra treatments to give it a boost, especially after the lack of Vitamin D. Serums, masks and hydrating facials suited to your skin type are perfect for this and the most popular colours used at this time of year are warm pinks, mauve, soft browns and pops of creamy champagne shades. A popular product is the Pillow Talk Luxury Palette by Charlotte Tilbury. If your skin is dry, look for cream-based products. Glowing foundations work well along with cream or liquid blushers. I love Pot Rouge for Lips & Cheeks by Bobbi Brown that can be applied using your finger. It melts into the skin, adding luminosity but also a natural flush of colour. The ideal lash treatment is the Triple Enhance Lash Serum by Nouveau Lashes. Your natural ones are lifted and tinted, opening the eyes making them pop. The treatment lasts up to six weeks, perfect if your honeymoon is soon after the wedding. Micro weddings, in particular, do not require make-up to be heavy because the day is very intimate so it’s the details of the make-up that have the most impact.

WINTER TRAVEL
With travel rules and regulations constantly changing, newlyweds and nearlyweds will be looking to the UK to celebrate post-vows, and minimooners will be spoilt for choice when sticking to destinations closer to home; here’s two to whet your appetite: Situated deep in the Scottish Highlands, 57 Nord occupies a dramatic position between three ancient sea lochs surrounded by the majestic Kintail Mountains. With floor to ceiling windows that frame the panoramic views stays here are largely elemental, particularly in the autumn and winter months when the weather is ever more startling. Cosy up by the fire and watch the weather roll in with a dram of specially selected whiskey from the honesty bar and tuck into the hamper of artisan goodies. There are ample wet weather activities for epicureans: from the neighbourhood Fairy Tale Distillery to the internationally acclaimed Talisker; fine dining at Kinloch Lodge or fresh crayfish cooked at home from Duncan, the neighbourhood fisherman. At night watch the famous Eilean Donan castle light up from the cottage and spend the evening on a tour of the night’s sky with the help of the in-house guide – how romantic!
