Summer vibes T
his issue, there has been so much going on in the world and no, I’m not talking about the pandemic! Although on the topic of our Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he got married to his bride, Carrie Symonds, who rented her Christos Costarellos wedding dress - would you, or wouldn’t you, rent yours? Singer Ariana Grande caused an Instagram frenzy recently when she married at her home, coining the term ‘ceremini’ that’s inspired our hot topic feature this issue. We’ve got plenty of ideas for a staycation summer spent wedding planning now that restrictions have lifted, from a llama-shaped piñata holding wedding rings to a new covered terrace with a floating stretch tent at exclusive-use Berkshire wedding venue Wasing Park. There’s also fun fashion, big-day beauty and ideas for your honeymoon so enjoy the issue!
I love the wonderful details and tipi backdrop shown in our Festival fun shoot on page 51, photographed by www.dorianedescamps.com

Exclusive-use Berkshire wedding venue Wasing Park has unveiled a new covered terrace with a floating stretch tent alongside the Grade II listed Castle Barn. Adorned with fairylights and home to an outdoor kitchen and firepit, the new area offers an alternative year-round al fresco dining option with enough room for a band or DJ. Events manager Lisa Buffery tells us how the addition of the uplighters, speakers, heaters and a firepit have made the covered terrace a versatile space for guests. She says, “The new covered terrace will provide a more usable space that can be enjoyed all year round. The idea stemmed from the pandemic and has developed into a very special area for use by our wedding couples and corporate guests seating up to 50 people for lunch or dinner.” To book, visit www.wasing.co.uk and turn to page 17 to read more.

Rosalind Norton is the creator of Little Ideas, an online store selling quirky handmade gifts. Rosalind tells us, “It first started when my daughter wanted to make decorations using vintage books and I loved the idea. I thought it was a brilliant way of recycling so I started by making hedgehog, sausage dog, cat and fairy house shapes out of old books. During the lockdown, I had more time to focus on the business and came up with lots of little ideas! One was paper bridal bouquets and buttonholes offered in a variety of colours and I adore my book bridal bouquets. This one, pictured, has been created using a Harry Potter book. I think it’s a great way of incorporating something that means a lot to the couple on their special day. If we can source the book, we can turn it into a bouquet! They are also affordable, with paper bridal bouquets starting from just £45 each.” Your Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wedding magazine has teamed up with Rosalind to offer readers a 10% discount on all paper bouquets. J
odie and Michael first met more than ten years ago, becoming friends for a few years before they started dating. “We lost touch and then met up again in a pub a few years later and our relationship developed from there,” Jodie tells us. The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal in Paris for Jodie’s 27th birthday. “Michael proposed the night before my birthday on the Pont des Arts,” Jodie says. “He had planned a surprise trip and the first I knew about it was when we arrived at the airport - it was a complete surprise, I had no idea!”
SETTING THE SCENE Jodie and Michael were due to get married in 2020 in South Wales where Jodie grew up but had to change their plans due to the restrictions in place because of the pandemic. “After four cancellations with venues, we decided to get married at Windsor Guildhall which is a public building that complied with the restrictions at the time,” Jodie explains. “When the government announced that receptions had to be held outside, the lovely team at Oakley Court were able to host us and provided the fantastic catering which everyone loved! We were just so relieved to get married because we were beginning to think that it wouldn’t happen!”
“Our ceremony took place on the same day, and at the same time, that proceedings were beginning for HRH Prince Phillip's funeral which was happening next door at Windsor Castle. We deliberately left plenty of time to travel to our wedding because we anticipated lots of traffic but we arrived very early. As we left Windsor Guildhall, the press covering the funeral wanted to interview us so we made in onto the BBC news!” - Jodie and Michael 29

MICRO WEDDING SPECIAL
“Because we had to postpone our honeymoon due to the travel restrictions in place, we enjoyed a minimoon in Devon staying in the most beautiful cottage.” – Jodie and Michael The couple chose a vibrant green colour theme for their big day. “Our floral arrangements included foliage, gypsophila and stunning cream blooms,” Jodie says. “They were created by my friend's mum Amanda who owners Paper Rose Events. She filled round hat boxes and wooden crates printed with our new married name with these varieties.” The couple chose green organza table runners and matching chair backs, plus Fortnum & Mason wicker hampers, to decorate their al fresco wedding breakfast where guests were sat at three individual tables. “The stunning hotel building provided a magnificent backdrop, and we were so lucky with the bright sunshine that we had on our special day,” Jodie tells us. “We placed bottles of Champagne Tattinger Reims on each table and gifted our loved ones a slate coaster each with their name printed on as favours,” Jodie describes.
LOOKING THE PART Jodie wore a dress by Spanish brand Pronovias teamed with a veil that was her something borrowed from her sister and a pair of ivory bridal shoes. “I loved my personalised denim jacket with Mrs Durnian printed on the back,” Jodie says. “Michael and his groomsmen wore grey checked suits while my sister, who was my maid-of-honour, wore a green chiffon dress and my niece, who was our flowergirl, chose an ivory lace dress tied with the same ribbon that was on my sister’s gown.” 31
Top tip: “Really think about what’s important to you both, we were so concerned about having a small wedding but it was a perfect day.” - Jodie and Michael

plenty of time during your day to chat with all your guests, don’t make your schedule too tight. Relaxed, reportage photos of you and your loved ones make wonderful keepsakes.” - Loren
Loren Stone is a wedding, portrait, event and commercial photographer based in Maidenhead, Berkshire.
“Think carefully who you choose to give a speech - you don’t always have to go with tradition. Pick somebody who can captivate your guests and make them laugh because some of the best photos of people laughing at weddings are taken during the speeches so you want someone who can command the room and induce much merriment.” - Loren
“What was lovely about shooting smaller weddings that took place during the pandemic was the extra time that couples had on the day to enjoy to themselves and also venture off with me as their photographer to have portraits taken of just the two of them. Now that larger weddings have resumed, the pressure can be on to fit as much as possible into the day. Allow a bit of time, just the two of you, for relaxed couple photographs to be taken at different points during the day. There’s nothing better than a stunning sunset shot or a backlit photo taken at night.” - Loren “Having so many guests to chat to on your wedding day now that numbers are no longer limited on larger weddings, you’ll be forgiven for wondering if you’ll have time to see everyone! Make sure you allow
“Think outside the box when it comes to entertaining your guests. Why not arrange a fun activity for everyone to take part in - you’ll be surprised how much your guests will love it and the photos will be awesome!” - Loren “Make the most of being able to get ready with your mum and bridesmaids and have your chosen photographer present during this. It’s such a perfect start to your day and the photos will help to remind you of the fun that you had. Just try to keep the room as tidy as possible because the photos will show up any mess in the background! - Loren

Photographer and proprietor of Wallingford Portraits & Weddings, Tonja Fritz-Johnson, is a wedding, portrait, commercial and pet photographer based in Oxfordshire. “Does size matter? The pandemic has no doubt brought about a change of thinking for many couples who have had to scale back their day and opt for either smaller weddings or accept multiple, long postponements.” - Tonja “I have had the chance, and privilege, to photograph large and small weddings both pre-pandemic and during the restrictions and people enjoy themselves whatever the size of the guest list.” - Tonja “Often I hear that with larger weddings, the couple did not have the chance to speak to everyone and that the day is over so quickly, but it mattered to them to have everybody there.”- Tonja “From couples who recently opted for a smaller wedding, I hear that they appreciated the intimate and relaxed day that they were able to have, with the decision made for them about how many guests to invite.” - Tonja “Despite the restrictions, many couples still thought creatively about how to celebrate and what they wanted to do, rather than sticking to traditions. As a photographer, it’s always great to see everyone’s ideas come to life!” - Tonja “I believe there are only three important things that need to be in place to achieve the best wedding photographs. Most importantly, you’re marrying the person you love. Secondly, that you have fun on the day and also that I, as the photographer, get to spend time with you both creating amazing wedding photographs that will remind you of a fantastic day for many years to come.” - Tonja

Graham Lee is the talent behind the lens at Yellow Door Photography based in Buckinghamshire. “Along with a house purchase, your wedding will no doubt rank as one of the biggest expenditures you’ll have. At such an expensive time when everyone seems to want a slice of the cake, many couples will try and look at ways to ensure their budget goes as far as possible. Your wedding photos are your memories for life and something you’ll treasure and show generations to come so it isn’t worth cutting back on these.” - Graham “Now that larger weddings are back with a longer guest list, relying on a friend, or somebody who is a ‘weekend photographer’ to take your big-day photographs can be a false economy. Whilst they may be great at shooting landscape images, do they have the experience of photographing a wedding under pressure to capture those one-time shots? - Graham “Getting friends involved in contributing, for example by posting pictures on social media or your wedding website, can be invaluable. This means that you can hire the professional photographer at his basic rate or for less time.” - Graham “Don’t opt for an album package upfront. An album can always be added at a later date if the budget allows. It’s more important to spend that hard-earned cash on quality photography, to begin with.” - Graham “Is there something unusual or noteworthy about your wedding that the photographer can use to promote themselves? For example, having your wedding featured in a magazine is a great way to showcase your day and impress family and friends.” - Graham “Do find a couple of photographers whose work you like and that offer quality images. Sometimes value is not just about getting the cheapest price, but the energy and enthusiasm, coupled with what’s included in the package and who wants to work with you.” - Graham

The Long Dog is a family-run restaurant situated in the village of Waddesdon in Buckinghamshire. Private dining is available for weddings and exclusive use of the venue or the bar area, restaurant or garden can be booked. A comfortable capacity for a wedding at the property is between 40 and 60 guests with room for a DJ and dancing. Full packages start from £2,500 for a mid-week wedding and £4,500 for a weekend celebration which includes venue hire for the day and food. Tailored packages are available for each couple’s needs and on the menu is authentic British cuisine made with ingredients sourced from independent suppliers with everything made fresh on-site. Mains include hot smoked salmon supreme, pan-roasted halibut and lobster thermidor and dishes are paired with a fine selection of wines, locally brewed beers and signature cocktails created by head barman Rob Kovacs.
General manager Jackie Seago tells us, “We have a new head chef, Matteo Romeo, who has come from The Pointer country pub located in Brill which won the best pub in Buckinghamshire with him at the helm so we’re aiming for rosettes.” The team partner with local celebrant Mark Avis and St Michael and All Angels church is situated close by for couples wanting to book a ceremony. Jackie tells us, “We’ll soon have a small woodland area that will look magical as a backdrop for big-day photographs in addition to the newly refurbished restaurant and bar area that’s ideal for the reception.”

The bars are handmade by owner Joe Jerrome using recycled wood and start at 1.5 metres wide and range up to 6 metres to cater for events of all sizes. “Whether it’s welcome drinks on arrival or a bar to party the night away with, I’ve got it covered with either a pre-paid or cash bar,” Joe tells us. “I cater for large celebrations as well as smaller weddings with a micro bar hire and table service delivering cocktails to guests during the reception’. Joe says, “A wide range of cocktails, beers, wines and spirits are available. Our cocktails are freshly made and served in jam jars finished with fresh fruit from Fletchers Greengrocer in Wokingham. I support small local businesses like mine. A backdrop displaying the menus is available for each event which looks cool lit up at night. Favourites on the cocktail menu are a French Martini, the ever-popular Mojito, an Aperol Spritz and a Floradora. I also make favour boxes containing small bottles of cocktails and gift-wrapping them for guests to take home.” If couples are planning an intimate wedding and want guests who can’t be with them on the day to feel a part of it then the cocktail boxes are a must! Lorna Sansom is the cake designer, baker and sugar florist at Sweet Marguerite Cakes based in Aylesbury. She has recently seen an increase in demand for two-tier designs for weddings with between 40 and 50 guests. She tells us, “This isn’t to say that larger cakes aren’t still in vogue for smaller weddings because those orders are still being booked – one of my couples who married just after the restrictions lifted had an intimate guest list of 45 loved ones but still wanted a large statement cake and served bigger slices.” Lorna continues, “A trending flavour for summer is lemon and elderflower - layers of moist, zesty lemon and elderflower sponge soaked with lemon, elderflower and limoncello liqueur syrup and filled with lemon curd and a smooth swiss meringue buttercream. My rhubarb and 64
custard cake, made with layers of rhubarb-flavoured sponge soaked in a rhubarb gin syrup and filled with rhubarb jam and a vanilla buttercream blended with custard is also proving extremely popular.” Lorna says they’ll be a return of dessert tables and afternoon tea set-ups for weddings as the year progresses and confidence returns. “I love providing afternoon tea for weddings so I’m looking forward to being able to offer this service again.”

EXPERT ADVICE

TOPIC
Our experts answer your questions about micro weddings
THE RISE OF THE CEREMINI
Alison says: A micro-wedding, with just a few hand-picked guests, is an exclusive event. Couples may feel more comfortable expressing their emotions in front of a smaller number of loved ones. The focus is just on them and the commitment they’re making to each other and having a smaller guest list means it’s easier for everyone to get involved in the ceremony which creates some poignant heartfelt moments. Here are some ideas: Promise of support A marriage needs support. Here I ask the guests as a group to promise to support the couple, to love them and encourage their love for each other. The guests respond with “we will, we promise.” Ring-warming ceremony The exchanging of rings is the traditional way of sealing the marriage contract. It’s an unbroken circle, symbolising unending and everlasting love and is the outward sign of the lifelong promise that has been made. You could introduce a ring-warming ceremony just before this where each guest holds both rings while making a wish, or saying a prayer, and then passes it on to the person next to them, creating an inclusive and intimate aspect to the ceremony. An alternative way to approach the ring-warming ceremony is to have a ring-blessing ceremony that avoids the multi-touch element of the ringwarming ceremony. The rings are placed on a cushion, box or tray and passed around for each person to say a blessing. At the other end of the scale is the new trend of anniversary receptions – you can easily incorporate a celebration ceremony where the couple can reaffirm their love with all their friends and family. A very simple way to create a poignant moment is for each guest to light a candle and say a few words or to make a wish for the happy couple. A ceremini with your trusted circle of family and friends, those that mean the most in the world to you, creates an intimate setting where everyone feels they can be more expressive with their emotions which makes the ceremony even more personal. Meet the expert: Lynn Tierney is an independent wedding and family celebrant based in Oxfordshire and founder of Lynn Tierney Ceremonies. She works with couples planning a wedding, vow renewal, naming ceremony or any unique occasion in a location of the couple’s choice. Lynn says: Having a small and intimate wedding offers many opportunities to embrace romance and emotion – here are some meaningful examples. Hand-fasting ceremony Think Mel Gibson in Braveheart kneeling on a woodland ground, just a couple in love and their celebrant... well, maybe you wouldn’t want to be kneeling, but you get the idea! Hands are held together and bound with each couple’s own special cords as they make their vows. Love letters in a box A couple can write a love letter to one another, telling each other why they fell in love, what they still love about them and what each other’s future hopes and dreams are. The sealed letters are placed inside a box to be opened and enjoyed on a future anniversary. Love lock There are bridges all over the world where lovers have placed their padlocks and thrown away the keys. Couples can find a spot in their garden, or a sentimental place to them, to attach their padlocks as they speak their vows, locking the love. Personal vows or special poems Imagine declaring personal vows, or a sentimental poem, in an intimate setting. Partners can share special words, written from the heart and committing to a future with the person who loves them the most in the world. Loving cup Consider sharing a quaich (which is a two-handled drinking cup) for the first toast. Couples can hold the cup between them taking three sips each - the first to toast the love that brought them together, the second for the love they celebrate on the day and the third for the love that carries them into their future. As they require minimal equipment, they’re ideal for a small venue, and their acoustic sound will bring any party to life without overwhelming your guests. YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY Please can you give us some styling ideas for our small intimate wedding? Meet the expert: Elizabeth Wong is a wedding and event stylist and the founder of Elizabeth Weddings. She offers bespoke venue styling, design and hire at weddings and events throughout Oxfordshire, Bristol and the Cotswolds. Elizabeth says: A venue stylist can help make a wedding look extra-special, researching elaborate place settings featuring beautiful crockery, charger plates, cutlery and much more. Even with a small wedding, hiring a venue stylist can give couples peace of mind and remove some of the pressure on the day itself. They can help design and coordinate all the finer details, ensuring that everything is perfect. The styling or decorations shouldn’t be sacrificed with a micro wedding – it should still look like a dream day and one way of doing this is by using large statement centrepieces that create the wow factor! At Elizabeth Weddings, we offer bespoke styling and décor packages and accommodate smaller celebrations. I feel that with intimate weddings, the couple and I can focus more on the finer details to make the day feel extra-special. BUZZ
BYE BYE TO DRY
When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. The Skin Republic Foot Peel offers the solution. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

ROSY GLOW
Some exciting newness from Pixi Beauty has hit the shelves recently and I’m nuts about the +Rose Glow-y Powder (£14) in particular. This silky soft, rose infused, multiuse powder can be applied as a veil of blush or highlighter adding a touch of radiance and luminosity as it brightens the complexion. What’s more, the natural mineral formula contains ceremides to give time-release moisture to the skin. Click play and check out the bridal look I’ve created using this beauty with the Flawless Beauty Primer, +C Under Eye Brightener, Endless Shade Stick in pink quartz and Endless Silky Eye Pen in black noir. THE CLEANSING EXPRESS
Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk
POLISH PERFECTION
Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.
SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk
BE AT PEACE
Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com
HAIR REPAIR
If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 83

Q&A These talented hair and make-up artists reveal all about summer weddings
FRESH-FACED
SIMPLY CHIC
Meet the expert: Mia Towndrow is a qualified massage therapist, reflexologist and reiki specialist and the owner of Pure Wellbeing Therapy based in Crowthorne. She offers a mobile service throughout Wokingham, Ascot, Reading and the surrounding areas.
Meet the expert: Sophie Casey is a professional make-up artist and hair stylist based in Oxford specialising in weddings. Her career has seen her work in fashion, film and television including on Downton Abbey.
What are the benefits of having a regular facial massage? I’m considering this before my wedding.
Sophie says: I’m seeing a shift from boho-chic looks to simpler yet textured styles. The tousled ponytail is trending at the moment and is simple to create with the volume on top and a soft curl or wave throughout. It looks great pinned into a low, seamless ponytail with loosely curled strands left at the front to frame the face. This style looks effortless finished with a wire hair accessory worn at the side and a veil can also be added. The low bun is another simple yet elegant option. The hair is lightly curled throughout to give it some texture. It’s then delicately pinned at the nape of the neck into a twisted bun with strands left around the face to soften the look. Add a stylish hair comb for the finishing touch.
Mia says: There are many benefits to having a Natural Facial Lifting Massage before your wedding works on various levels. It helps to promote a healthy and youthful glow for your special day and is a non-invasive treatment. It gives an instant lift by relaxing the muscles in the face, as well as tightening, toning, and improving skin elasticity, leaving you looking, and feeling, rejuvenated and refreshed. Facial massage is beneficial to the nervous and immune system, especially if you may be feeling the effects of stress and tiredness from the preparations. The massage stimulates blood flow and oxygen to the skin and muscles, flushing toxins that help with puffiness and dry, stressed-out skin. It encourages cell renewal and removes dead skin cells. This form of massage benefits the entire body and mind ahead of your wedding, melting away any stress and tension from the face, head, neck, and shoulders. Natural facial lifting massage uses a blend of Indian face massage, Japanese massage techniques and facial reflexology that work on the meridians of the face, helping to re-balance health throughout the body.
Please can you give me some summer bridal hair ideas?

hair guide
THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley
A
nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 86
Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry
strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair
BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrientdense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to haircare. The integrity of a product and what
hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients. ❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily
at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-or-death situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 87
