THE BAY TREE PUB REVEALS GARDEN MAKEOVER

The Bay Tree pub located in Grove, Wantage, has undergone a significant garden investment including the installation of a new 75-inch external television to showcase outdoor sporting events plus a new covered awning with heating, festoon lighting and revamped dining furniture. The children’s play area also boasts new artificial turf and the pub has added to its drinks selection with more than 35 different types of gin, rum, whisky and vodka. WYCOMBE MUSEUM, HIGH WYCOMBE This local history museum located in Castle Hill House and Gardens is a hidden gem located in a calm oasis just a few minutes walk from the town centre where couples can tie the knot in one of five licensed spaces. The front garden features extensive grounds, perfect for an outdoor summer ceremony, that are overlooked by the entrance hall, spacious café lounge bar and ground-floor Chilterns Gallery. There are plenty of outdoor seating options outside, close to the main building, and many photogenic areas on the grounds for guests to explore. An informal canopy marquee makes a great cover from May to September which comes as a basic structure with attachable sides and two window walls revealing views of the grounds (additional marquees are also permitted.) The museum provides a unique backdrop with the galleries open during the wedding afternoon for guests to visit. The largest licensed ceremony room, The Old Stables, is located in the outbuilding, a brick and flint original stable building with a high-beamed ceiling and neutral internal décor. tacey and Jake met through an online dating app. “As our first date, Jake took me for breakfast after one of my night shifts which was a real treat,” Stacey tells us. “We became engaged during the week that we went into the first lockdown! It was very romantic because we were at home and Jake had asked my mum to call me as a distraction while he decorated our home with candles and flowers. He had Tale As Old As Time from Beauty And The Beast playing, which is my favourite Disney movie that ended up being the song I walked down the aisle to because we hired a string trio who played a beautiful arrangement for us.”

SETTING THE SCENE “The venue was perfect - we both loved it the first time we visited,” Stacey says. “The outdoor areas looked so pretty and we wanted to get married outside using the gazebo by the river. The conservatory where we held our wedding breakfast felt so bright and spacious and everyone stayed over at the hotel to prolong the celebrations!” The couple hired a vintage car to have photographs taken with because Stacey stayed at the hotel the night before so didn’t need any transport. “I have a Fiat 500 and a slight obsession with the vintage versions so we hired a beautiful white vintage Fiat decorated with a hessian ‘Just Married’ sign, a white flower and foliage garland placed on the bonnet and balloons,” she tells us. The couple decorated their day with a white and green colour theme and some other fun décor. “My stepsister Karla-Louise designed all of our stationery including our table plan, place names and table names using a cork-brown card,” Stacey tells us. “She also created some white leafy bunting using eucalyptus leaves that we strung everywhere from the gazebo used for our ceremony to the

“We can’t thank our amazing photographer, Vicky Lewis, enough. Winning her gift to photograph our entire wedding lifted us so much during those first few months of the pandemic. She went above and beyond for us and gave us so many good tips, which was much-needed for Jake who hates having his photo taken. She made us feel so relaxed on the day and the results were amazing!” – Stacey conservatory and also in the small barn where we placed a photo booth and Mr & Mrs-themed table tennis to entertain our guests.” Stacey wanted large white balloons scattered around the venue so included these as centrepieces attached to stands wrapped in hessian. “My stepdad sourced some log slices for the base and our florist provided the leaf stems to climb up the stands,” Stacey says. The couple’s florist also created garlands for the photo booth, vintage Fiat and the bouquets. “My main request was for plenty of foliage with pops of white to tie in with our theme,” Stacey explains. Stacey and Jake chose a white tiered cake decorated with leaves and a hessian bunting cake topper. Their catering was provided by the talented team at the hotel. “We enjoyed canapés outside by the river, a three-course sit-down meal and Jake’s favourite food during the evening - hog roast rolls with all the trimmings!” Stacey says.

LOOKING THE PART The couple’s bridesmaids wore sage-green tulle dresses featuring different necklines. “Jake, his groomsmen and our dads all wore navy suits with sage-green ties, pocket squares and brown shoes,” Stacey tells us. “Jake and his best man, Ben, wore a three-piece suit to stand out and Jake wore some personalised map cufflinks. One featured a map of Salcombe in Devon where his family used to enjoy holidays - it;s also a place that we have visited many times together and where Jake asked me to be his girlfriend! The other showed a map of Oxford which is where we live and where Jake proposed - he’s such a romantic!”

TIME TO CELEBRATE Along with the wooden photo booth (made by Jake’s dad) and table tennis, the couple hired an Irish band as their evening entertainment. “They performed our first dance song and various sets throughout the night,” Stacey explains. “The Irish jigs went down particularly well, especially after a couple of glasses of wine!” 31

Gemma Bartholomew married Alexander Martin (known as Alex) on 6th August 2021 at Oakley Court in Windsor.

emma and Alex met through a dating app. “I never imagined it would lead me to my husband,” Gemma tells us. “We enjoyed our first date in Windsor and Alex came across as kind, genuine and he made me laugh. It wasn’t long before we found a shared love of travelling and began planning adventures of our own.” Alex adds, “When I first saw Gemma’s online dating profile, I was immediately attracted to her. She has a beautiful smile and deep blue eyes and we got along well from the start. Everything felt so natural and easy and before we knew it, we had fallen in love.” The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal in Singapore. “Alex proposed on holiday. I’d sensed that he might

pop the question but we’d travelled across Vietnam for almost three weeks and he hadn’t asked me so to be honest, I wasn’t thinking about it,” Gemma tells us. “Little did I know, but obstacles kept getting in the way of his plan to propose, one of them being that I had unknowingly put the ring in the hold luggage when I’d reorganised our bags for a flight! Another time, there was a storm whilst we were on a cruise across Hą Long Bay. Eventually, Alex asked me to marry him when we arrived in Singapore which was a wonderful surprise.” Here, Gemma tells us about their special day at riverside wedding venue Oakley Court in Windsor. 35

Our flower arrangements helped deter mine our colour theme and were created by a talented family friend, Mark. I showed him pictures of the types of arrangements and bouquets that I liked and then let him work his magic! It was such a wonderful surprise when I first saw them in the room that was being set up for our wedding - we couldn’t have asked for more!

“I had a close shave from the barber the day before so on the big day, my neck was sore and red. My best man’s wife recommended some cream that contained foundation to help remove the redness. I put on far too much then buttoned my shirt up, ending up with an orange collar! Luckily I had a spare one!” – Alex

My mum also made our four -tier wedding cake featuring lemon and elderflower, vanilla and salted caramel, chocolate fudge and white chocolate and raspberr y layers. It was decorated with sugar flowers and gold leaf which tied in beautifully with our colour sche me – our guests loved it!

Everyone enjoyed a selection of drinks and canapés served on the lawn next to the river followed by a mouth-watering threecourse wedding breakfast. We loved the fact that all of our guests had a choice of three starters, main courses and desserts. During the evening we had a buffet and with multiple chefs within the family, we ensured that we picked a venue that could provide excellent catering which was important to us.

I chose a dress by Essence of Australia called Romy. I knew I wanted an A-line style and when I tried this gown on, I knew that it was the one - it felt elegant with the right amount of detail.

I wore a pair of simple, timeless bridal shoes that were very comfortable, a peridot necklace that was my something borrowed, a hair vine which I loved and my stunning engagement ring.

“One of my bridesmaids wrote me a lovely card to read on the evening before the wedding that I was very grateful for. It was a lovely touch and a tear-jerker! On the day, the speeches provided much laughter and some great memories.” – Gemma

I loved having my hair and mak e-up done on the mor ning of our wedding and with the artist Sam Sheppard doing it, it felt like having a friend getting ready with myself and my bridal party - we were all delighted with how it lasted throughout the day. 37

“Every supplier we used was brilliant right from the booking stage through to the date alterations because of the pandemic and the service on the day.” – Gemma and Alex

For the evening reception, we enjoyed the band called Daft! They were excellent, providing sets of live music with a DJ service in between. After waiting such a long time for our wedding, and being unsure whether we would even be allowed to have live music, it was a real treat to dance with our loved ones.

mma and Grant met almost 15 years ago aged just 17 through mutual friends. “Our first date was in the local Harvester!” Emma tells us. “We grew up together throughout those years and then finally moved in together.” The couple became engaged when Grant proposed on Emma’s 30th birthday at their home. “We were getting ready to leave for a special family meal at the Oxo Tower in London and I came down the stairs to find him on one knee!” Emma tells us. “It was a memorable day and we got some lovely photographs by the Thames - it was worth the wait!”

REAL WEDDINGS LOOKING THE PART Emma wore a dress for her ceremony by Pronovias. “It was one of the first styles that I tried on and I loved the lace detailing and the regal feel,” she tells us. “The finer details, such as the belt, was added after and it was fitted to perfection, so much so that some guests thought it was a made-to-measure gown!” Emma felt a bit apprehensive about her dress being too big to dance in so she chose a second gown for their reception. “I love to dance!” she tells us. “Luckily (for me and not the bank balance) I happened to see another dress I loved in Pronovias, again with elegant lace sleeves and flowing material, and I just couldn’t say no to having two dresses! During the day, I wore a simple pair of vintage diamond earrings which were a gift from my mum and for the evening reception, I added some sparkle with a matching Swarovski set.” Grant and the groomsmen wore matching blue tuxedos. “Grant chose a different shirt, shoes, bow tie and buttonhole to help him stand out along with a pair of personalised cufflinks,” Emma tells us. “Our beautiful bridesmaids wore blush full-length dresses with handmade hair accessories to match mine. The flower girls wore pretty white dresses with a large bow on the back and had white matching accessories in their hair.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE During the reception, the couple and their guests enjoyed acoustic music performed by a friend, Josh Campbell Music. “The Master of Ceremonies, Barney, was also a close friend of ours which made the day even more special,” Emma tells us. “During the evening, our guests were entertained by the band The Hot Keys and many commented that they were the best wedding band they had ever heard! This was while everyone enjoyed authentic wood-fired pizza and a magic mirror set-up once everyone had consumed a few drinks - we still laugh at some of the photos!”

“We don’t remember much because the day went by so fast, it felt like a dream. Looking back, as cliché as it may sound, it was the best day of our lives. We now can’t wait to watch the wedding video and look through the photos to remind ourselves of the smaller details. The speeches, in particular, were so heartfelt and many of our guests said that it was the best moment of the day for them too (with many tears all round!)” – Emma 43

TOP TIP: “Don’t be pushed into rushing decisions and take your time to find reputable suppliers, as this will make the process so much easier. Everything will come together in the end, so try not to stress and just enjoy the day!” – Emma and Grant

Berkshire-based photographer Annabel Farley can help organise surprise proposal photo shoots which can be a great opportunity to capture that moment of surprise. She tells us, “Planning your wedding is a wonderful and exciting time for you and your partner but where do you start once one of you has popped the question? Booking your photographer should be the first thing you do after securing your date and your venue to get your first choice – they can be booked up to 24 months in advance!” She continues, “With 18 months to go, secure your other suppliers and the number of your party size to use as a guideline for the rest of your planning. With 12 months to go, say “yes” to the perfect dress - with so much choice, the earlier you begin, the better. Six months before your wedding you want to be testing your cake, make-up and hair before sending out your invites and finally, scheduling a plan for the day to ensure that everything runs smoothly.” Annabel has some words of wisdom for couples wishing to celebrate with their furry friends. “If you have a pet, you may wish to bring them along and have a few photos taken together. Firstly, check that your venue is welcoming of pets, three in the local area that are includes De Vere Wokefield Estate in Berkshire, Ufton Court near Reading and The Swan at Streatley.” Annabel continues, “Why not dress your pet for the occasion by giving them a bow tie that matches your colour theme and let them walk down the aisle with you?” Annabel advises couples on how to get some of the iconic shots on the special day. “Want to guarantee that perfect confetti picture? It’s one of the most fun, colourful shots when everyone is in the moment enjoying Scan to view video

themselves. The key is having plenty of confetti and I mean plenty! Ask your ushers to give it to guests as they walk out of the church or ceremony room. It helps if it’s loose so they can just take a big handful, making it easier to throw. Choose confetti colours to coordinate with the theme of your wedding or the season.” She continues, “Want to achieve the best sparkler shots? Ask your bridesmaids to hand sparklers to all of your guests, preferably early in the evening. Make sure they’ve got something to light them with and ask the venue to have some sand or water buckets ready for putting them out. Choose the longer gold ones which give a nice warm glow and will burn for longer which means more fun for your guests and plenty of time for the photographer to capture the photos.”

Windsor-based wedding photographer Abi offers her top tips for couples. “Think about what you’d like from your photographer as there are plenty of different styles, from those offering a natural story-telling approach capturing relaxed memories of your day to those that will create more artistic portraits. Look through websites and social media feeds to get a feel for what you like.” She continues, “Everyone wants to look their best in their wedding photos so it’s worth getting some tips about posing from your photographer and taking a few moments before your wedding day to practice in front of a mirror.”

Ensure you feel comfortable around them which will enable them to photograph you authentically.” She continues, “Book a pre-wedding shoot, I promise this will help! It will enable you to spend some time with your wedding photographer and relax in front of the camera so you are completely at ease on your big day.” Gabrielle adds, “Take the time to go through the details of your day with your wedding photographer, it’s so important that they know what’s happening when, whether it’s a small or big wedding.”

BECKY ADAMS PHOTOGRAPHY Berkshire-based Becky suggests booking a photographer whose work you like and consider hiring a second photographer. She tells us, “Your photographer should recommend you the opportunity to have a second shooter attend to capture the groom preparations, candid guest shots and details of the day. I highly recommend this because it’s a great way of capturing those special moments that the main photographer might miss while taking the couple portraits and group photos.” Becky suggests, “Give as many details about your day to the photographer including timings and suppliers. If you’re having a confetti picture then get more confetti than needed - this is because the more you have, the more you will see in your pictures, it ensures beautiful, natural photographs.” She continues, “Always have someone from the bridal party to call out names for the group shots. The photographer won’t know who is who, so to help, make sure you nominate someone that will know who is needed 52

and when. Try to remember no loose hands, keep them in pockets or hold something (like the bouquets). Connect during the couple portraits by hugging, kissing and touching and enjoy those first moments as a newly wedded couple. Don’t look at the camera - natural images, whether silly or romantic, are important.” Becky suggests it’s worth considering the time that the sun sets if you want golden hour shots (the hour before sunset). “Is it a winter wedding? Are you getting married during summer in the middle of the day? Light is really important in photography, it can make the difference between a dynamic image and a flat one. If you want a certain ‘look’, consider the timings.”

She says, “There’s often an ironing board and carrier bags in the bridal prep suite and staff setting up the wedding breakfast room ahead of the celebrations which we don’t want to see in the background of images. Get rid of the carrier bags and if the room is dark, ask for another suite to get ready in, the brighter the better – your make-up artist will thank you too! I always turn off the overhead lighting and make use of the natural daylight flooding through the windows. I do everything to keep my eyes peeled for background spoilers but sometimes I want to get that candid shot. Black and white photography

Stand close to each other with your hands down low and at the end of your ceremony, smile at your guests. As you walk out, a kiss, high-five or a cheer always looks fantastic!”

She advises, “If they haven’t then suggest that they meet you at your venue ahead of your wedding to have a look around and go through everything with you. Also, look through whole albums of weddings they have photographed so you get an idea of the pictures you will be getting.” Loren adds, “Couples that enjoyed an engagement shoot with me always seem to be more relaxed on the day. They already have some experience of the couple shots and look confident and fabulous! Meet the expert: Louise Allison is the owner of Louise Rose Couture based in Reading, offering made-to-order bridal and couture evening wear. Louise also offers sample gowns available to rent. Louise says: Having your wedding dress made for you is an exciting experience, it’s not often you have a professionally trained designer and seamstress at your fingertips! My first piece of advice before committing to a bespoke design is to make sure you have tried various silhouettes on to ensure you know what shape works best for you. Often, brides visit me with a very clear idea of what they want, but after trying on my sample dresses, ideas can evolve or even change completely. Once we have the overall style decided, we can look at the finer details such as fabric and finishes, for example, you might want to add longer sleeves or change the neckline. All designers work slightly differently, but after the initial consultation with me, you can expect to receive a sketch of your dress along with a quote and time frame. For a made-to-order gown, most designers will create a mock-up of your dress for fitting purposes before cutting into your bridal fabric. Expect to have four to five visits for the entire process. Costs can vary widely, but on average you could expect to pay between £1,250 and £2,500 depending on the fabric and level of detail. BOHO BRIDE I’d love some ideas for a whimsical, ethereal wedding dress for my boho-inspired spring wedding – can you help? Ruby Mimi in Zurich opened in October 2021, and is the first hotel of the Munich-based Ruby Group, to open in Switzerland. Situated where one of the first cinemas in Zurich used to thrill audiences more than 100 years ago, the Art Deco-listed hotel’s 208 rooms are spread over its seven floors. The new hotel takes guests on a journey back to the exciting golden era of Hollywood of the 1910s and 1920s with its charming cinema hall. Broadrayne Farm in the Lake District has launched The Byre, a chic minimoon hideaway for two. A careful renovation has preserved features while adding in contemporary comforts in both the white-bricked Pavilion and Temple buildings that make up this Berkshire-based YTL Hotels property. It’s accessed via a footbridge (after checking in at the Boat House on the mainland) and is home to luxury accommodation in a choice of 40 stylish bedrooms and The Wedgewood Suite commanding prime position in the original Temple building with wrap-around views. As the hotel’s grandest offering for newlyweds, this spacious Grade I listed suite boasts character features including the original Wedgewood blue ceiling with contrasting white friezes, a custom-designed bed with an upholstered headboard, a separate seating area and a walk-in closet with an exposed bath tub. The Floating Spa By Spa Village is nestled in a tranquil spot moored on the banks of the river. It’s only open to hotel residents and the wellness journey starts the moment you step onboard with a choice of indulgent treatments. A must-try is The Floating Massage by Moss of the Isles performed while lying on an aqua cushion, giving the illusion you’re floating on a cloud of warm water.

MADE FOR ROMANCE Weddings take place in a choice of elegant function suites located in the Pavilion. Ceremonies are held in the impressive River Room with its floor-to-ceiling windows revealing far-flung views of the river and idyllic surroundings. There’s direct access to a private patio area with a firepit and couples wanting an outdoor ceremony can enjoy the foliage-clad gazebo with guests seated outside on the lawn. A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.

Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.

WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.
