Autumn vibes A

s the sun sets on summer, I’ve compiled an action-packed issue for you and it promises to be a great read! I love planning a magazine for this time of year, with autumn and all of its wonderful colours the inspiration for seasonal celebrations. The real wedding of Laura and Sean caught my eye because of its beautiful barn venue, Notley Tythe Barn, which is an ideal choice for a cosy wedding as the evenings draw in and the temperature drops – turn to page 42 to read all about it. If you’d like to see your special day gracing the pages of Your Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wedding then please do email me at claire.ridley@countyweddingmagazines.com In this issue, there’s fabulous fashion (which is one of my favourite parts of the job, browsing all of the wonderful bridal dresses that land in my inbox), big-day beauty ideas and honeymoon inspiration (now that we’re allowed to travel again, yay!) So before the build-up to Christmas and New Year, which will be the inspiration behind the next issue, sit back and enjoy the wedding planning journey with me. Until the next issue,

YOUR ESSENTIALS NEW WOODLAND WEDDING SETTING Lucy Shaw, estate director of Nuneham Estate, recently opened The Cricket Field, a new marquee wedding reception venue, for a wedding showcase to help promote small local suppliers and businesses emerging from lockdown. It was important to the team at the country estate that small businesses were given a chance to get back on their feet after the uncertainties of the past year at no cost. Harry Saunders, owner of Husk Marquees (www.huskmarquees.co.uk) who is partnering with Nuneham Estate, provided the backdrop in one of his stunning structures ideal for a woodland-style wedding while Berkshire-based wedding photographer The Beautiful Due (http://thebeautifuldue.co.uk) captured some incredible images (pictured). Couples planning their wedding at the venue can be assured that the preferred list of suppliers is known and trusted. Tracy Hammond, who oversaw the event on behalf of Nuneham Estate, is now setting up a wedding network so that these positive collaborations can be strengthened and coming soon for weddings at the venue will be The Walled Garden, a magical space for celebrations. HEDSOR HOUSE LAUNCHES CANINE CONCIERGE SERVICE Quintessential English wedding venue Hedsor House, located in Buckinghamshire, has launched a Canine Concierge service for couples wishing to include their dog in their wedding. In partnership with Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, couples marrying at the venue can now add their furry friend to the guest list. With the support of an external professional dog handler, they’ll be safe in the knowledge that their pet pooch will be chaperoned, pampered and entertained. A Pawfect Day package includes the provision of tailored practical advice on how to care for the dog throughout the day, as well as a personalised Hedsor House gift and edible treats. The Unconditional Love package is where a professional dog handler will attend to care for the canine from the beginning of the day, assisting with everything from a pre-ceremony walk around the estate to supervising the photo opportunities. Couples will be able to craft a tailored itinerary ensuring the dog is available to greet guests and walk down the aisle. Bespoke dog attire, flower crowns, a doggie wedding breakfast and a personalised dog wedding cake can be provided at an additional cost. Overnight dog-sitting is also available, with the pet being returned to the happy couple the following morning. For every dog-friendly wedding, the property will be donating to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. The team at the venue tell us, “Dogs have always been part of family life at Hedsor House and we know that many couples are happiest when their furry friends are there to share

the special moments with them. We’re thrilled that our new Canine Concierge Service will also benefit a worthwhile canine cause, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, who are local to us in Buckinghamshire.” A Spokesman for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People added, “A dog is a huge part of the family so it’s only natural for couples to want to include them on their big day. We love how Hedsor House recognise this and go above and beyond to welcome dogs to their gorgeous venue, and to make them feel happy and comfortable. We’re delighted to be partnering with them. Their support will help us train more hearing dogs that will change the lives of deaf people.” To find out more and to book, visit www.hedsor.com 9

GREENE KING INNS UNVEIL NEW WEDDING TREND Green King Inns, with properties across the UK including in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, has revealed that intimate ceremonies are extremely popular following the pandemic. These smaller wedding sizes are causing a shift from couples choosing traditional venues, as 27 per cent of people would now consider tying the knot in their local pub and more than half (53 per cent) would contemplate having a micro wedding. Liane Hunt, spokesperson for Greene King Inns said, “The pandemic has caused us to reevaluate many aspects of our lives, and weddings certainly haven’t escaped this. Thousands of couples have had to delay their celebrations until they have been able to fit everyone in again – but over the last 17 months or so, it appears the wedding goalposts have been moving as people consider downsizing from a Covid-safe perspective, but also to keep costs down.” She continues, “Despite this new lean towards smaller weddings, Greene King Inns offer plenty of places to tie the knot with wedding packages that cater for both large and small affairs. With accommodation, function rooms and even hotels with capacity for larger weddings, should people want to go all out for their big day, they can.” To find out more and to book, visit www.greenekinginns.co.uk 10

ORWELLS RESTAURANT OWNERS SAVE THE LOCAL PUB Renowned chefs Ryan and Liam Simpson-Trotman, joint owners of award-winning Orwells Restaurant in Henley-on-Thames, have delighted their local community by saving disused village pub The Plowden Arms. Ryan and Liam will launch their first pub venture, bringing to it their trademark commitment to quality ingredients with a strong focus on sustainability. The pair, also known for their appearances on the television show James Martin’s Saturday Morning, has established a loyal following since launching Orwells Restaurant in 2010 and have won multiple accolades including four AA Rosettes. They plan to reopen the pub under its original name, The Plough at Shiplake, which dates back to 1774, retaining many of the much-loved qualities. The overall philosophy will mirror that of Orwells Restaurant which has been celebrated for its sustainable and entirely seasonal menu with up to 75% of the fruit and vegetables used grown by Ryan and Liam in their smallholding. Maria and Callum met in a local pub in Abingdon after a mutual friend introduced them. “We began texting one another and then dating, and the rest is history! Maria tells us. The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal on New Year’s Eve. “After almost three years together, we went on holiday to Gran Canaria for a festive trip,” Maria says. “On New Year’s Eve, we visited the beach during the evening to watch the fireworks and as the clock struck midnight, Callum got down on one knee and presented me with a stunning ring. I said ‘yes’ instantly – it was the best surprise ever!”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple had originally planned their wedding to take place during August 2020 in Las Vegas where they had visited on holiday a few years before and loved it. “Unfortunately, our date was cancelled due to the pandemic so “I had butterflies in my stomach we started to look for local venues,” Maria explains. “I had visited The Crazy Bear hotel but was extremely excited to for a wedding fair and loved it, it’s a beautiful venue and I hadn’t seen anything quite like make Maria my wife. Just it before so I knew that it was the one. Our before she arrived, I was so outdoor ceremony was simply stunning - we overwhelmed with emotion that were so lucky with the weather because the sun I started to cry. As she walked shone all day.” The couple decided on a glitzy theme down the aisle, I just remember inspired by their original plans to marry in Las Vegas. “Our mirrored acrylic gold and how beautiful she looked, white table plan and welcome sign suited absolute perfection. I couldn’t the venue and our theme perfectly,” Maria describes. “We also had gold and white table stop the tears!” − Callum numbers, and name cards decorated with gold metallic watercolour paints.” The couple chose gold Moroccan lanterns as their table centrepieces after being inspired by The Glasshouse, the room in which they hosted their wedding breakfast. “As our favours, we treated our guests to ivory heart-shaped scented wax melts topped with glitter from my friend Lucy’s company, Wax Whiff,” Maria explains. “My friends and I are always buying them for our homes so I knew that they would make great favours. We hand-picked the scent called pink fizz and pomelo and they suited our theme perfectly. Whenever I melt them, I always think of our special day.” The couple also gave scratch cards to their male guests placed in personalised envelopes which read ‘we’ve tied the knot, now hit the jackpot’ which was a reference to Las Vegas. Maria and Callum chose ivory roses mixed with plenty of foliage for their big-day blooms. “I carried a teardrop bouquet featuring these varieties and some of the roses had pearls 31

placed in the centre,” Maria tells us. “Our groomsmen had matching buttonholes and one of my bridesmaids, Brittany, handmade all of the bouquets for the bridesmaids and flowergirls using artificial blooms and accessories that everyone could keep as a memory of our day.” The couple also hired a flower arch that matched those used in their top table display. “The team at the venue were so impressed with the arch that they asked the company to be a regular supplier for future weddings and events,” Maria says. The couple chose a four-tier cake that was handmade by a family friend, Caroline Doran. “Two tiers were ivory in colour and filled with vanilla sponge and raspberry jam,” Maria describes. “The other two were gold chocolate-flavoured layers (our favourite!) finished with a sequin effect and flowers, plus a handmade Mr and Mrs Hastings cake topper.” Maria and Callum also treated their guests to a pick-andmix station filled with retro sweets. “I have lots of nieces and nephews so this proved to be very popular, even with the adults, and everyone took home a bag of candy,” Maria says. “We also had a heart-shaped doughnut wall placed next to the dancefloor – perfect for an energy boost!”

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART Maria wore a fishtail dress with long sleeves. “It was the “Our videographer, David, opposite of what I thought was fantastic. He captured I would choose but my bridesmaids insisted that I the day beautifully and it tried on every style of dress was fantastic to watch it and I loved this one the moment I put it on,” she tells back and relive the happy us. “I adored the fitted shape memories all over again.” that flared out at the bottom which was so flattering. I − Maria and Callum teamed it with a pair of my sister’s Chanel earrings (which both my sisters had worn on their wedding days and which became my something borrowed). Callum had bought me a stunning Tiffany & Co. bracelet which he gave to me the night before our wedding that I also wore and I finished my look with a short veil that I planned on removing after the ceremony but loved it so much I wore it all night!” The couple’s bridesmaids looked glamorous in their gold-sequinned gowns that suited the glitzy theme and Callum and his groomsmen chose navy suits teamed with champagne-coloured ties and pocket squares. “I surprised Callum with a navy Armani watch and matching cufflinks for our big day,” Maria tells us.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Maria and Callum wanted to create a Vegas feel to their reception as a reminder of their original wedding plans. “My mum and I secretly hired an Elvis impersonator who joined us for our first dance and sung Can’t Help Falling In Love,” Maria describes. “The DJ started playing the song as we started dancing and then Elvis appeared! Callum and our guests were gobsmacked but they loved it. He sang the song for a second time followed by a few Elvis classics.” As if this wasn’t enough excitement, everyone was asked to gather outside towards the end of the evening. “My parents surprised us all with an incredible firework display,” Maria tells us. “It was magnificent - I’ve never seen fireworks like it, they lit up the entire sky. It was so romantic to watch it with my new husband and it provided the perfect grande finale.” 33

“The day was the first time that we had been able to see our close friends and family together without any restrictions and it was a big celebration! The fizz was flowing and everyone was having a wonderful time.” − Maria and Callum

“Our photographer, Vicky, captured our day perfectly. S

amantha and Ben met at secondary school when he moved to the area from London. “Over the years, we become best friends, spending most days together,” Samantha tells us. “When Ben turned 19 and decided to join the British Army, we spent more time together than usual in the months leading up to the start of his basic training. The time that followed was a shock to the system for us both because he was positioned at the other end of the country and we were unable to speak. After six long weeks, Ben came home for some leave and we have been inseparable ever since.” The couple became engaged at the start of 2019 in their new house. “We had only recently moved in and I had spent the day at a spa with my mum and arrived home that evening to one of my favourite songs playing and candles and rose petals scattered everywhere,” Samantha tells us. “Ben gave a little speech, which he later told me he had been practising all day, before getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him. At this point, we had been together for more than seven years so I very quickly said yes!” Here, Samantha tells us all about their summer wedding that followed a grey and green theme.

The energy that our loved ones exuded on the day was contagious and, considering that we only had 30 guests, I’ve never been to a wedding where there were so many people crying! It was a very emotional day for everyone.

We had a live acoustic duo perform for the drinks reception, and during the evening, which our guests loved. We added in plenty of personal touches. Our tables were named after our favourite Guns N’ Roses songs and we had 7-inch records by the band displayed on each table that formed part of our centrepieces.

Along with the records, our centrepieces included three candles in tall candlesticks, and champagne flutes, placed on a mirrored plate scattered with hydrangea petals. The flutes were engraved with each guests’ name and doubled up as favours to give everyone a keepsake from our special day.

REAL WEDDINGS “The event manager at Wasing, Nikki, was great because nothing was too much trouble in the build-up to our wedding, or on the day itself. She helped us navigate the postponement and ensured that everything ran smoothly.” − Samantha and Ben

We chose dried flowers for the bouquets and buttonholes that could still be enjoyed long after our wedding.

Our single-tier lemon-flavoured semi-naked cake was made by a family friend. It tasted delicious and was just the right size for our party.

I wore a dress from the Ella Rosa collection by Kenneth Winston (style no BE470). From the moment I became engaged, I started researching dresses and fell in love with this one. I managed to find a bridal store that stocked it so that I could try it on but it was 80 miles away! I tried on three other gowns before this one, and all of them looked beautiful, but when I saw myself in this dress, I burst into happy tears!

“Our photographer, Ben, exceeded our expectations. He knew exactly what to do and say at just the right moments. He was so skilled at getting everyone gathered in the right place at the right time and even fixed my veil in place after we realised my hair and make-up artist had left and I had completely forgotten about it!” − Samantha

We hired a DJ for the evening and performed our first dance under the new outdoor stretch tent at the venue. My grandad provided some additional entertainment when he carried a tray of flaming sambucas and accidentally knocked one over, making it look like he was carrying a tray that was on fire!

“We booked a caricaturist who was a huge hit! It meant that everyone had a keepsake to take home with them.” − Samantha and Ben THE DREAM TEAM

TOGETHER

Premium wedding venue Notley Tythe Barn in Aylesbury provided the rustic backdrop for Laura and Sean’s special day that was rearranged four times Images courtesy of Yellow Door Wedding Photography

Laura and Sean Kelly married on 25th June 2021 at Notley Tythe Barn in Buckinghamshire.

REAL WEDDINGS Laura and Sean met at the age of 16 through mutual friends and hit it off immediately. “We became boyfriend and girlfriend and after 13 years together, we got engaged on holiday,” Laura tells us. “We had booked a cruise around the Mediterranean and Sean had planned to pop the question on our first stop in Santorini. Unfortunately, it was too windy to dock but we ventured out on the deck to take a photograph of the sunset and that’s when he proposed - of course, I said ‘yes’ and it came as a wonderful surprise!”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple chose Notley Tythe Barn in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire to hold their ceremony and reception. “Sean found it while researching venues before he proposed and fell in love with the place,” Laura tells us. “He suggested that it should be one of the first venues that we visited after getting engaged and I instantly fell in love with it too. Our original wedding date would have marked 14 years together but unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we had to change the date four times!” Laura arrived in style in a 1936 Rolls-Royce 25/30 limousine called Elsie that became a stylish backdrop for their couple portraits. “We loved the car,” Laura tells us. “It looked fantastic in our big-day photographs.” The couple added some personal touches to their wedding with the help of their family and friends. “Our best man arranged a personal video message from Ronan Keating for us which was very special and I ended up walking down the aisle to Ronan’s song called This I Promise You,” Laura tells us. “After our ceremony, it was wonderful to see all of our loved ones gathered together outside enjoying drinks and canapés, especially after such an uncertain year due to the pandemic.” Laura and Sean named their tables after places that they had visited together over the years. “Our favours were charity

The flavours were lemon, raspberry and blackberry and it was finished with a Mr & Mrs Kelly cake topper and decorated with fresh flowers matching those in my bouquet.” The couple styled their ceremony and reception with stunning pink and cream blooms mixed with plenty of greenery. “We had foliage draped from the beams in the barn where we said our vows,” Laura tells us. “My bridal bouquet and the bridesmaids’ posies contained pale pink and cream roses while our buttonholes featured a single pale pink rose. We filled jam jar vases wrapped in hessian with similar varieties and presented them on log slices as our centrepieces.”

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART Laura wore the dress called Faye by Essense of Australia. “I loved the embroidered lace detail and the statement open back,” Laura tells us. “I teamed it with a short veil and a pearl hair vine and my friend, Georgia, created my elegant up do. I finished my bridal look with a silver pendant cross necklace, silver bracelet and a pair of stud earrings.” Sean and his groomsmen chose navy suits styled with soft pink ties and pocket squares to match their buttonholes. “Our bridesmaids’ dresses tied everything together because they were decorated with pink, blue and green sequin flowers,” Laura says.

TIME TO ENTERTAIN “We felt so blessed to be allowed to have everyone attend our wedding,” Laura tells us. “We enjoyed our first dance to This Is It by Scotty McCreery outside on the courtyard which all of our guests loved watching.”

“Neither of us felt nervous, we were just so excited and happy that our day had finally arrived!” − Laura and Sean

Our experts answer your questions

‘I DO’ Meet the expert: Tony Dunne is an independent celebrant trained by The Academy of Modern Celebrancy. We want to write our wedding vows. Can you offer us any tips? Tony says: Writing your vows can be daunting, but if you follow some simple guidelines, then it can be the emotional highlight of your wedding ceremony. It’s important to discuss your vows with your partner before you start composing them, so you can agree how long they should be, whether you would like them to include humour or to be traditionally sentimental or romantic. Remember to be yourself. If you’re a romantic person, then this is the

HONEYMOON HOT LIST Meet the expert: Emma Holden is an experienced travel agent planning vacations and honeymoons. We want to book an adventure of a lifetime for our honeymoon but don’t know where to start and don’t have time to research it alongside planning a wedding. Can you help? Emma says: I can offer a bespoke personal concierge service to build your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, and to create your special memories. I remove the stress from the planning, especially during these current times with the various restrictions in place due to Covid, and am ABTA protected so that you can book with confidence. I have years of experience and knowledge of the travel industry and can secure very competitive prices, offer quality advice and personal support from start to finish. time to be as sentimental as you wish, and don’t forget to tell your partner what you love most about them. Read your vows out aloud a few times before the day to ensure you’re very familiar with them, as you may be nervous on the day. Finally, keep your vows secret from your partner until you’re declaring them at the ceremony. This will heighten the emotion and love felt by both of you and your family and friends. I’m about to start wedding dress shopping – what styles can I expect to see in store for the new season?

D265 by Essense of Australia

BEST-DRESSED BRIDES Meet the expert: Bride To Be is an award-winning boutique based in Reading, Berkshire, selling dresses for brides and bridesmaids as well as a selection of accessories.

EXPERT ADVICE

PH8008 by Phoenix Gowns

Isabella tells us: Here are some of our most popular dress styles at the moment. This style D265 by Essense of Australia is a popular gown for brides searching for a timeless clean-cut look. The matte mikado fabric creates a sophisticated and glamorous effect and having a V-neckline helps frame the face. The beaded belt accentuates the waist and the V-back adds a touch of something special while the dramatic train completes the look. Style PH8008 by Phoenix Gowns is the ideal choice if you’re after an embellished gown and a more detailed design. This features Gatsby-inspired lace appliqué that adds detail to this strapless style complete with a sweetheart neckline. It enhances curves by gently flaring from the hips into a fuller skirt and the corset back leads to the statement chapel train with a full lace hem. The finishing touch is the elegant bolero jacket with cap sleeves featuring a delicate scalloped edge. CAUGHT ON CAMERA Meet the expert: Danielle Newton Photography is a Buckinghamshire-based photographer specialising in weddings, baby, child, family and pet photography. We’ve just got engaged so how do we go about booking a good wedding photographer? Danielle says: The quality of the photographer’s work should be what captures your eye. If you’re drawn to a particular photographer then ask to see their full portfolio because they should be able to offer candid and posed pictures along with other styles. Be aware that images should not be heavily edited, they should be natural. Enquire whether they have a contract and the relevant insurance because all good photographers will have this in place. To get the best images of the most important day of your lives it’s important that you both feel comfortable and relaxed with your chosen photographer. Ensure you meet them in person or via a video call before your big day to sense whether you have a connection. Your photographer will play a big part in the organisation of your day. I have tweaked the hair for bridesmaids, dressed the bride and looked after children during my career as a wedding photographer. Taking photos is only a part of it so if a photographer does not have the necessary experience, the most important moments can be missed. Ask if they’re willing to visit your venue and call or meet with your wedding coordinator because a professional will do all of this to ensure that their couples don’t need to worry. Most of my bookings have come from word of mouth from my

previous clients. A good photographer will be able to give you some testimonials. Danielle Newton Photography | 07876 767 555 www.facebook.com/DanielleNewtonPhotography www.instagram.com/daniellenewtonphoto 59

Love is in the air

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.

FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would

60

be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them

and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.

I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.

Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.

Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.

How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.

Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.

The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.

To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.

To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 61

Be beautiful

BE YOU

Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty

Tim McBaj

It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.

B

orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 74

liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!

Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant

and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.

“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and

sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

Made from a naturally antimicrobial performance fabric it allows the hair to dry without force or heat and eliminates the frizz, damage and breakage caused by harsh terry towels. SILKY SMOOTH

Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. This Is Silk Cleansing Cloths in Noir are £21.99 for three at https://thisissilk.com

PERFECT PREP

Award-winning and cruelty-free make-up brand Milani Cosmetics has introduced the Rose Prep + Prime range to Boots and Beauty Bay. It’s all about nourishing and replenishing your skin for a radiant complexion and dewy glow. I’m a fan of the lip treatment products in particular, which were game-changers for me! The Rose Sugar Lip Scrub (£13.75) comes first in the pamper session, polishing dry and chapped areas for an ultra-soft and smooth pout. Follow with The Rose Butter Lip Mask (£13.75), which contains hyaluronic acid to plump and replenish moisture. Your lipstick will look perfect on the day and your bridal make-up artist will love you for doing all the prep for them! These little heroes are available at www.milanimakeup.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

y t u a e B

www.gettyimages.co.uk

Q&A ALL MADE UP Meet the expert: Rosie Scott is a hair and make-up artist based in Berkshire specialising in bridal, shoots, fashion editorial, television, film and music videos. I need some inspiration! What are the bridal hair and make-up trends for this winter when I’m getting married?

www.facebook.com/Vaughanstephensphotography

Our experts reveal all

Rosie says: Winter wedding trends for hair and make-up are all about enhancing your natural style and glow. A year of wearing face coverings has influenced the trend for effortless style with great skin and a focus on the eyes. Natural brows, subtle lashes, light smokey eyeshadow and a soft lipstick shade or gloss will help to keep your look fresh and modern. For a contemporary winter look, you could opt for a natural eye and a stronger lip in a red or berry shade which is very seasonal. Hairstyles are also trending towards a more relaxed vibe with low ponytails and casual buns. A half-up, half-down style with loose curls and simple accessories also never dates. Remember that your wedding is all about you and your style so you must feel comfortable and confident with the looks that you choose regardless of the trends.

COLOUR-POP Meet the expert: Pam Wrigley is an awardwinning wedding make-up artist and hair stylist covering weddings throughout the three regions. She has more than 20 years of experience and has been involved in the BAFTAS and London Fashion Week. I want to wear a bright lipstick shade or bold eye make-up at my winter wedding, do you have any tips for these statement looks? Pam says: A bright lip can add a perfect pop of colour. If you’re keen to choose this vibrant look, keep the rest of your face natural and pick your colour with caution! It must suit your skin tone or the result will be less than flattering. You can be as brave as you want and don’t be put off by age, if you’re a mature bride who loves the idea of a bright lip then go for it! The smoky eye is a classic wedding look and you might want to mix it up a little - there are two ways to add colour to your eyes. You can go all out and pick a bright, bold eyeshadow that is modern, daring and fun. If that seems intimidating then opt for a coloured eyeliner for a subtle hint of colour instead.

Huda Beauty Glow Obsessions Highlighter Palette £27, www.boots.com “For all those glamorous brides-to-be, this is the perfect product to define your features and achieve that gorgeous glow. The pocket-sized palettes come with four different shades to match any make-up style and I loved mixing them to create a bespoke hue. To achieve a luminous complexion, I applied to the high points of my face including my cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and bridge of my nose, and this buttery, powdered formula blended in beautifully. A big bonus for me was that you can add a small amount for a natural look or build up for a glam finish that looks great in photos.” — Olivia Gibson

GLOW UP!

Looking to achieve that oh-so stunning bridal glow for your wedding day? These products can help and team CWM have put them to the test Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Liquid Illuminator £26, www.spacenk.com “On turning to YouTube for help on how to use this product I found a tutorial video by Kevyn Aucoin’s fab director of artistry and education, Nick Lujan, and less than 10 minutes later, I was good to go! I put two of Nick’s suggested uses to the test and was impressed by both. Day one: layering Glass Glow on the cheekbones before foundation application, I received compliments on my luminous complexion! Day two: I mixed Glass Glow with my foundation and was wowed by the fresh even, natural-looking glow I achieved. Top tip? Don’t be deterred by the sparkle, the result is flawless.” — Kelly Andrews

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacianmide Dew Drops £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “As a bride-to-be, I know how important it is to look fabulous on your big day, so I was excited to try these drops designed to give you a fresh, dewy look. The product smells amazing, and a little pump goes a long way, so although it’s not the cheapest, it’ll take you a long time to go through it all. I used the drops every morning for a few days and noticed a difference right away. My skin felt softer and looked hydrated. I’m planning to use it on the morning of my wedding and would definitely recommend it.” — Melissa Barker 80

Sculpted by Aimee Second Skin Dewy Finish Foundation £24, www.sculptedbyaimee.com “Ideal for normal to dry skin this moisturising foundation has a gorgeously smooth texture that’s super-easy to blend resulting in an even finish. One pump is all that’s needed for a light application or for days when more coverage is in order a couple of pumps should do the trick. I loved the healthy glow and breathable feel it left me with. I was also thrilled to learn of its anti-ageing properties: music to my ears having hit 40 during lockdown!” — Kelly Andrews

Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist £18, www.naos-store.co.uk “I’ve never used a mist before but I’m very much a convert after this product. It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” — Danielle Harvey

Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Skin Tint £32, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This little beauty is a must in anyone’s make-up kit; the lightweight product blends like a dream. The sheer coverage formula was the perfect balance to even out my skin tone while leaving a natural-looking finish. I used the shade fair, applied it with a beauty blender and found that all my other beauty products layered beautifully over it. I was left with a glowy base and brightened complexion. I’d recommend this product for the summer and warmer weather!” — Olivia Gibson
