After months, even years, of reading my excited babble about our dear CWM colleague Melissa’s wedding day, you may be relieved to hear that it finally happened, and what a day it was! I’ll leave the storytelling to the bride herself, as you can read all about it from page 111, but I would like to impart a little of my own bridesmaid’s wisdom centred around the morning preparations.

These moments were the highlight for me, and it’s a part of the day often overlooked amongst the hubbub of wedding planning, so…

❤ Be as organised as you possibly can in the lead up. This way, you’ll have very little to worry about on the day. Admittedly, Melissa’s abilities in this area are superhuman, but knowing we weren’t allowed into the venue to set up until 10am she’d put together individual boxes containing everything each reception table needed. All we had to do when we arrived was unpack them in the right place. We were done in no time, stress free and ready to be beautified.

❤ When you have your trial, be sure to discuss with your hair and make-up artists the morning’s timings. Understanding whether there’ll be any travel time to the ceremony involved; or restrictions such as when you’re allowed entry to the venue, if you’re getting ready there, will help them work out where they should be up to and when. Melissa’s team had everything running like clockwork in a very tight time frame.

❤ Enjoy every moment. I can’t explain how special these few hours spent with our bride were. Chaotic and gone in a flash, but oh-so precious. I spent a significant proportion of it in tears and I could probably count the number of times I’ve happy cried prior to this on one hand! As we waited for Melissa to be called in to see the registrar, only the four of us remained in the cottage, and a hush descended for the first time that day as the bride centred herself and absorbed the enormity of what was about to happen. I swear I’ll never forget that time, my heart nearly beat right out of my chest with love for my amazing friends. My point is this: devote some of your planning time to the morning preparations and when your photographer offers you the option of capturing them, take them up on it. You won’t regret it, promise.

Now, while I leave you and mull over what on Earth I’m going to regale you with now the wedding is over, I hope you enjoy this issue. It’s bursting at the seams with inspiration! We’ve taken a look into the world of outdoor weddings and put together some wedding transport tips. keeeep planning!

Enjoy and

HOW BLOOMIN’ KIND

New Liverpool-based floristry business Somerset Blooms was set up by Nathalie Somerset earlier this year, adopting environmentally friendly working practices. “I’m creative with how I run the company and always look for new ways to add to my eco promise. I source alternatives to polyribbon, wet foam and single-use plastics and use ribbon crafted from old plastic bottles, natural and earth-friendly agra wool and biodegradable plastics. I even grow some of the flowers myself,” she tells us. Nathalie’s most recent eco action is delivering flowers in her local area by bicyle. Bright pink with a basket on the front, its super-girly and a win win as she gets her daily dose of exercise while she works! Mainly though, it’s because no fuel is used in theNathalieprocess.continues, “There’s so much more businesses can do to become more eco-conscious, they just need to be creative and think outside the box. My customers enjoy the luxury of my flowers alongside the feel-good factor knowing they don’t come at a price to the planet.” Somerset Blooms also undertakes bespoke design work for weddings so to find out more head over to https://somersetblooms.co.uk

“I ZOO”

Chester Zoo has released a set of artist’s impressions providing the first glimpse of the wildlife charity’s new 200-capacity wedding venue. The images show the building’s bright and spacious interiors, which feature patterns and textures drawing inspiration from the zoo’s mission to prevent the extinction of endangered species. Featuring an impressive gated entrance, the building will have its own large private courtyard, exposed brick walls, vaulted rafters and large windows overlooking the botanical gardens, as well as a host of preserved historical features.

The luxury space is an extension of an existing Grade II listed stable block that has stood at the heart of the 128-acre zoo since it opened in 1931. The original structures were once home to some of the attraction’s first animals such as lions, bears and chimpanzees. Zoo conservationists say they plan to retain the rich history and character of the building, while renovating and extending some areas using sustainably-sourced, wildlife-friendly materials.

Jamie Christon, CEO at Chester Zoo says, “While we have for some time offered an intimate wedding space for 50 guests at The Oakfield gastropub, we’re frequently asked if we can accommodate larger scale events. That’s why we’re really excited to begin welcoming guests to this incredible new venue from early next year.” The grand opening of The Square is planned for spring 2023 and wedding dates are still available. The main event room is expected to have a capacity of 200, while reception and breakout rooms bring the total capacity of the building to 380.

CHILDHOODsweethearts

Chloe and Alex met doing the Duke of Edinburgh Award at school. “He was two years older, but I was early in completing my bronze and silver awards, so we ended up meeting at a gold award session when we both became part of the same group,” Chloe explains. The pair trekked through North Wales together, climbing Snowdon and slowly fell in love as they went. They obviously shared a love for the great outdoors and being active, but as time went on, they discovered even more similarities and interests. Plus, says Chloe, “I love that he’s a real cheeky chappy and makes me laugh every day!”

Alex is a caring and romantic gent and adores surprising Chloe with special trips. On one such occasion he told her to pack an overnight bag and took her to the train station, at which point he passed her an envelope. On it was the number one and he told her this was the first clue of the day. Inside was a poem from which she had to guess their destination – York. The city is special to the couple as they both attended university there, living there for five years.

Throughout the day Alex took Chloe to all of their favourite places, including bars, restaurants and gardens, all holding special memories for them. As they went along Chloe was handed more envelopes with more clues until she was given the penultimate one in the Minster gardens, which held a ticket to go up York Minster Towers. Little did she know though that Alex had arranged a private viewing and at the

top he handed her the final envelope containing a series of letters, which she was asked to lay out on the floor in front of her. By the time she realised the letters spelled, “Will you marry me?”, Alex was on one

had gleefully accepted and they’d come down from the Tower, they headed off for a drink at the hotel bar. When she turned the corner Chloe found both of their families there waiting for them with balloons, flowers and champagne. Alex had arranged for them all the stay the night and help them celebrate. “It was a weekend I’ll never forget,” Chloe says.

The couple wasted no time in starting to research wedding venues, and before long, Chloe had compiled a list of no less than 32 she wanted to visit! So, they made a start, but nowhere came close to their shared vision. They decided to visit Colshaw Hall open day as a lastminute thing and from the moment they set foot inside the ceremony room, they knew it was the one. “The staff couldn’t do enough for us and allowed us to create the wedding we wanted, offering everything we could have wished for. We loved the exclusivity, the rooms for our closest family of guests and, of course, the bridal make-up room that dreams are made of!” Chloe explains.

35 REAL WEDDINGS

I wore an Allure gown with low-cut sweetheart neckline, low back and long train. I teamed this with an Ivory & Co. tiara and two-tier cathedral-length veil.

The bridesmaids were dressed in chiffon one-shoulder gowns, while the flowergirls wore knee-length A-line dresses with lace detailing and a champagne satin sash around the waist.

The men all wore blue checked three-piece suits with a champagne knitted tie.

The bouquets featured fresh flowers in white and champagne peonies and roses, along with greenery such as eucalyptus.

Our main wedding favour was a donation to Macmillan Cancer Support, presented in frames on the tables, but we also gave our guests bags of flower seeds labelled: ‘take one and let love grow.’

The cake was white with champagne gold leaf embellishment, flowers to complement the main arrangements and our initials.

The venue provided beautiful hanging wisteria. We also had a memory and favour table, and light-up

Myself and my family are big on music and wanted to reflect that on the big day, with no lulls. So, we had a variety of entertainment planned throughout the day. Family friend, Ryan Noon, played piano throughout; Backchat Brass Band played after the ceremony and during the drinks reception; and Six 15 played during the evening – a DJ, saxophonist and drummer.

We spent the whole day grinning from ear to ear like Cheshire cats! We had the most perfect day and loved every single second of it. It was lovely to watch people enjoy the day we’d been planning for so long.

Our centrepieces were all made from faux flowers to match the theme, along with floating candles.
37 REAL WEDDINGS

We had the venue for two days, so before the wedding we invited our closest family members, as well as the bridal and groom’s party to spend the evening with us for a rehearsal dinner. It was such a lovely way to start the celebrations.

We had a mini-moon, mid-moon and a honeymoon! We escaped to the Lake District straight after the wedding for a couple of days, then enjoyed a trip to Cape Verde for a week in May. We’re super-excited for our main honeymoon in August – three-and-ahalf weeks in Dubai, Sri Lanka and the Maldives

Ian, was incredible! He did a fantastic job interacting with everyone. He made us laugh constantly and involved the flowergirls in activities throughout the day. A true gent and an absolute legend.

Be organised before the week of your wedding so you can relax and enjoy the whole experience.

Joanne and John celebrated their big day with a New York theme Images courtesy of Matthew Rycraft Photography
42

Jo and John met while working at the same Liverpool law firm. At the time John was going through a difficult time due to the sad passing of his father and Jo, who was unaware of his struggles, asked him on a date – not once, but twice! Understandably he wasn’t looking for love, his focus being purely on trying to overcome his grief, but Jo’s persistence helped him through that in a way, and the couple have never looked back. John proposed in New York on a helicopter ride over the Hudson River seven years later, which was a complete surprise to Jo.

The pair chose Blessed Sacrament RC Church in Walton Vale, Liverpool for their ceremony. Jo had attended the church with her nan and grandad as a child and it was always her dream to get married there since it holds such special memories for her. The Titanic Hotel would host their celebrations – “Its rustic vibe was perfect for us,” Jo Here, explains.the newlyweds give us the lowdown on W-day, 22nd April, 2022…

SETTING THE SCENE

In homage to the city of their engagement, Jo and John opted to style their day with a New York theme complemented with an oh-so romantic ivory, blush and gold palette. The table plan featured the New York skyline in gold and the place names were designed to match. The tables were all named after iconic Big Apple landmarks. Wedding favours were M&Ms as a further nod to the city, which is home to the brand’s huge store in Times Square.

The beautiful centrepieces included tall ivory blossom trees along with glass cylinders and floating candles; while the floral arrangements all featured blush and ivory roses and peonies, with plenty of gorgeous greenery. The venue was decked in more blooms in the shape of a pretty flower wall, floral cake stand and arch leading from the bar to the main

Theroom.cake was comprised of three delicious tiers flavoured with chocolate orange, Victoria sponge and lemon drizzle all iced in buttercream. It was adorned with fresh flowers and topped with a gold Mr & Mrs Radcliffe and two cat silhouettes, plus a toddler, to represent their family.

The bride and groom travelled in style in a Royal Imperial and Daimler limousine. “Travelling from the church to the wedding reception was the first time we were alone as a married couple and it felt nice to have a moment to take it all in,” John remembers. The guests meanwhile were transported from church to hotel in a vintage London Routemaster double decker bus.

LOOKING THE PART

Jo wore a tulle A-line dress by Millie May Bridal with bespoke alterations. Crystals were added to the tulle to mirror her veil and lace added to the neckline to create a round neck rather than a V. The shoulders were also customised with the addition of a cap sleeve. “I bought an ivory diamante belt and asked my seamstress to sew this on to the waist. I found this made it even more flattering.

I always wanted a princess-style gown as I’m not really one for wearing tight-fitting clothes. It was perfect for me and no one else will ever have the same one thanks to the

bespoke design,” Jo explains. She accessorised with a simple pearl and crystal necklace with matching bracelet by Jon Richard. She also wore a complementing tiara.

John looked dapper in a black tuxedo with satin shawl lapel, black bow tie, double breasted waistcoat and gold pocket watch. It was the lapel that set him apart from his groomsmen, as although they were dressed to match their lapels were peaked.

The bridesmaids were dressed in dusky pink, full-length chiffon dresses with lace top and capped sleeves. They paired the gowns with pink diamante heels, diamante bracelets and heart necklaces.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The littlest guests were kept entertained throughout the day by a kids’ corner including soft play, mini ride on bikes, small slide, three tipis, colouring books, and personalised treat boxes. As you can imagine, this was a huge hit and kept them well and truly occupied while the adults enjoyed the speeches and their wine.

A DJ entertained guests in the evening. “We chose Conversations In The Dark by John Legend for the first dance. I knew it was our song from the moment I first heard it. It was wonderful to share the experience with our son, Theo,” Jo remembers.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Jo says, “I felt a mix of every emotion, but most of all excitement that the day was finally here after waiting so long.” John agrees, he tells us, “I was nervous but excited. The day was a long time coming and it felt surreal that it had finally arrived. For both of us, it was the best day of our lives.”

Jo continues, “Driving to the church with my dad was one of the highlights for me. It’s a road I drive down every single day, but this time felt different, like nothing else mattered. I’ll cherish that moment forever.

“I’ll never forget the sight of John standing at the altar. He looked like someone out of a James Bond film – so handsome. As soon as I saw him, I immediately felt at ease.”

John too shares one of his highlights: “The moment we were announced into the room as husband and wife, and seeing our friends and family clapping and cheering will definitely stay with me, as will the speeches. I was so nervous, but as soon as I started talking, I relaxed and surprisingly enjoyed it.” This success was partly thanks to toastmaster, Mike Culleton, who read the groom’s speech 10 minutes before he gave it and suggested changing the final toast, which worked beautifully.

In fact, the couple have a great deal they wish to thank Mike for. Jo shares, “The thought and planning he put into making our day run as smoothly as possible was second to none. From the first meeting we had with him, we knew we were in safe hands. He made us feel like we could just relax and didn’t have to worry about a thing. Every detail was taken care of, even down to him handing me a glass of water at the entrance to the church.”

Jo shares some words of wisdom: “If you’re staying at a hotel on the night of your wedding, try to book an extra night if possible. We did and it was the best decision ever! We were able to spend the next day in the hotel, child free, and treated ourselves to a spa and room service.”

“Also, don’t hesitate to change into flat shoes for the evening. I wore gold Converse pumps and it was so good to be able to dance in comfort!”

Emily describes meeting Samuel as love at first sight. “He’s such a caring individual who always thinks of me before himself,” she says. Samuel proposed while away on holiday in Cancun, Mexico, just six months later – as he says, “When you know, you know!”

They say lightening never strikes twice, but the pair experienced love at first sight again, this time with their venue, Merrydale Manor. “We loved the rural location, the size of it and the venue staff who were so attentive. The interior was modern, yet classic with a twist of everything we were looking for. We knew as soon as we viewed it that it was the one,” Emily explains.

51 REAL WEDDINGS

We had a lot of performers as we were due to get married when the pandemic hit, so this gave us more time to think about what we really wanted to ensure a memorable party after spending so much time apart from our friends and family. To start the day we had an electric violinist. She performed as I walked down the aisle and during the wedding breakfast.

My gown was by Essense of Australia. I was captivated by the detail on the train and the neckline was beautiful. I also wore a bespoke overskirt, made to match the detail on the dress and complete the look. My groom gifted me a Rolex the morning of the wedding, which I wore all day and my bridesmaids bought me a Swarovski bracelet as my something blue.

Our wedding favours were jam jars filled with mixed chocolates, personalised name cookies and place names made from acrylic that guests could take home and keep. The bridesmaids wore A-line dresses in navy with a silk bottom and lace top, with button detail down the back to complement mine. The Friendly Paper Company designed the table plan and I put it in a copper frame, which I decorated with fairylights, and placed floating candles and rose petals around it. Samuel and his groomsmen wore tailored three-piece suits in navy tweed, accompanied by gold dickie bows and brown brogues.

The centrepieces included stunning white hydrangeas and more floating candles, while the top table was dressed with a long trail of eucalyptus, more greenery and baby’s breath. The fresh flower arrangements and bouquets matched our white and green palette with some pampas grass included. Private florist Denise Whiteside was impeccable at all the small details. Our flowers were phenomenal, I’ve now dried them to keep forever.

Our cake had five tiers, all flavoured differently: chocolate sponge, toffee sponge, lemon Madeira, raspberry and vanilla sponge, and fruit cake. A personalised acrylic sign next to the cake showed our guests the different flavours. It was decorated with traditional white icing and lilies trailing down one side. We also had a handmade copper cake topper.

Acoustic guitartist, Danny Boyle, sang during the drinks reception and kept our guests dancing. During the evening, our fabulous DJ really knew how to get our guests partying. He also had pictures of Samuel and I displayed on a screen, which was a lovely touch.

The day’s food was traditional, tasty fare. We chose soup for starter, country chicken dinner for main, with chocolate tart and raspberry sorbetfor dessert. This was accompanied by wine and prosecco from a much-loved vineyard in Ryedale, Yorkshire.

We also had a talented saxophonist who played classic jazz and house music. Arielist Anastasia Whittaker, performed an outstanding display pouring champagne upside down into guests’ glasses.

53 REAL WEDDINGS
We also had a balloon arch, chocolate photo booth, ice sculpture luge, sweet cart polaroid book.
My top tip would be to take your time. You’ve worked so hard planning, so let the day be enjoyable. Get as many photographs as you can with your loved ones and don’t forget to sit down and rest those feet! Finally, take everything in and remember why you’re there: to celebrate your unconditional love. We got married during one of the worst British storms in recent memory –great day for it! The weather was shocking, heavy wind and rain like we’d never seen. During the speeches, the electricity cut out and the lights and mic went off until the generator kicked in! All of our suppliers were very special and worked so hard for us. So much of ourday wouldn’t have gone to plan without them all. Thank you to our wonderfulphotographer who captured incredible photos even in extreme conditions and to ourtoastmaster, George, for reassuring us when many guests couldn’t come last minute. Grand designs

Bursting with ideas for showing off a grand, historical wedding venue, and looking for the right moment to showcase a fabulous lockdown project, owner of Liverpool-based Thornton Events Lindsey Hanson was inspired to put together a styled shoot. “It was a massive success and I’m so excited about the future of the business. We have a lot of exciting things happening and I can’t wait to share them with everyone,” she says.

Having worked with many wonderful suppliers in the wedding industry Lindsey found it quite the undertaking to settle on just the few she needed

to help her. She tells us, “The dream team of Danielle and Elizabeth worked so hard creating beautiful hair and make-up looks and the dresses we chose along with the black tux were ideal for that wow-factor look. Foam Flowers weren’t given any pictures of what we had planned, just a description and they managed to match our ideas perfectly with every set up!”

We hope you feel inspired as you delve into these pages, where Lindsey tells us more about the stunning setups…

Starting with the stone pagoda, we decided to add a bit of colour and opted for bougainvillea. During lockdown we stripped, sanded and painted some doors and had been waiting for the perfect moment to show them off! This was it and I’m so glad. We chose a greenery and white themed arch for the veranda, which really didn’t need much as it’s already beautiful. So, we kept it simple.

Plan your al fresco nuptials with help from the experts

“I dos”OPEN-AIR

Outdoor weddings have been trending for some time now, having been helped along by pandemic restrictions and now the new law surrounding exactly where you can legally say “I do.” While tying the knot al fresco is an undoubtedly worthwhile experience in the end, it doesn’t come without its pitfalls and planning difficulties, so we turned to some of the region’s experts for the answers.

DID YOU KNOW?

From 1st July, 2022, the law changed allowing you to say “I do” anywhere within the grounds of an approved wedding venue. Whereas under the previous version, the legal ceremony was required to take place in a licensed room or permanent structure such as a gazebo, bandstand or pavilion if outside. Jennifer Walker of JW Ceremonies (www.instagram.com/celebrantjenwalker) says, “This move gives couples and the wedding industry more choice and flexibility for those who dream of an outdoor wedding ceremony.”

While this is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, there’s currently an exciting review underway, which is pushing the Law Commission to update the outdated Marriage Act of 1949. Sarah Boalch of Ceremonies With Personality (www.ceremonieswithpersonality.com) explains, “If

passed, it will be the officiant who is licensed rather than the venue –meaning couples will have the choice to legalise their marriage absolutely anywhere. So, rather than having to sign legal documents separately, couples will be able to do everything in one setting. This could be a few years away yet, but ultimately the review is asking the law to give couples more choice and freedom when planning their big day.”

You can still have the ceremony of your dreams anywhere even now though as, Sheila Duncan at Pure Silk Ceremonies (https://puresilkceremonies.co.uk) explains, “Once you’ve completed the statutory marriage at your local registry office, you’re free to have a celebrant-led wedding anywhere you like. The sky really is the limit, so whether you dream of a ceremony-by-the-sea, in the mountains, even in your own backyard, the choice is yours.”

PLANNED TO PERFECTION

So, now you can take advantage of the great outdoors from vows to celebrations, where do you start planning and what do you need to take into account that you otherwise wouldn’t at a traditional indoor venue? Our local experts have these top tips...

Celebrate with a celebrant Sarah says, “If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, the first thing you need to do is find a celebrant who suits your style. There are many across the region all with their own style and sense of creativity. A great place to start is The Celebrant Directory.

“Next, think about your location. Are you happiest with sand between your toes, taking in the view from a mountain top or simply surrounded by rolling hills and countryside?

“Finally, consider what suppliers you might need to transform your outdoor wedding vision into a reality. Whether you’re going for sweet and simple, or big and bold, life will be so much easier if you call in the help of the professionals, perhaps starting with a wedding planner.”

Whatever the weather

Sheila says, “Always take care to plan around the weather as much as possible. If your wedding is in the height of summer, think about providing shade for your guests. And there’ll always need to be a plan B in the event of adverse conditions. Usually, your wedding venue will make the decision on the day to set up outside or inside. What’s more, if you’re holding your wedding in a park or woodland consider a marquee or tipis to protect you all from the elements and make it easy to move inside if needs be.

Lindsey Hanson from Thornton Events (www.thorntonevents.com) advises, “Take note of how the weather has been the day before. If it’s been raining, the ground may still be wet and muddy. Plus, we may struggle to put some styling items onto the grass if it’s not level.”

Be prepared

Jennifer says, “Let your guests know that you plan to have an outdoor ceremony, giving them sufficient notice so they can be prepared. They’ll be ushered to the ceremony area in plenty of time, so supplying things like sunscreen, hats and sunglasses is a great idea.

“Carefully plan your attire from your veil to what you’ll wear on your feet. Every bride wants to make sure their grand entrance is a thing of elegance but walking on grass or sand in stilettos is not the easiest! Opting for a pair of pretty wedges or flats will aid that glide down the“Acousticsaisle!

can be non-existent in the great outdoors, so a good PA system with strategic planning and placing of microphones is imperative to ensure your congregation can actually hear your ‘I dos.’ Most celebrants will have their own PA system but bear in mind that you may need to contact a different supplier to take charge of this.”

Sheila also has these pointers for your tick list:

❤ Is the area you’ve selected large enough for the number of guests you’ve invited?

❤ Think about accessibility for all of your guests if for example, the ground is uneven.

❤ What time of day will you be getting married? This can make all the difference to your photographs.

STYLE IT OUT

When faced with a blank space, even an open field, where do you start?

Jacqui Owen of Jacqui O Flowers (www.jacquio.co.uk) has the answer: “Think about what your guests’ experience will be. I suggest you walk from where they’ll park, to the ceremony and then into the reception. What will they see? What information do they need? The details make all the difference – your loved ones will notice these things, take them on a journey with your venue styling.”

Overall, our local experts have the key to successfully decorating your open-air nuptials: use what you have around you. Sarah says, “In the forest? String some pretty fairylights between the branches. On the beach? Line your aisle with seashells...” Jacqui is of the same mind. She says, “Consider how you can maximise the surrounding natural beauty to enhance the space with flowers. For example, if there’s a stunning rose

garden nearby add some roses into your designs, or you could go for drama and surprise your guests with blooms they wouldn’t expect.”

As you do this it’s vital to create your focal point for the ceremony, where there won’t be an existing altar. After all, you want to make sure all eyes are on you as you say, “I do,” and clever use of your venue’s features can play a part in this too. Jacqui tells us, “I recently created a floral arch in a field with the majestic trees as its backdrop. It looked magical and we used the location’s natural beauty to enhance our creation.” While Jennifer adds, “Make the most of the view behind you. If there are countryside vistas, sea views, mountain ranges, a lake – make sure you’ve positioned your focal point in front of it for that allimportant moment.” Don’t get too swept away though as there are some practicalities you’ll need to bear in mind: “A stunning floral arch or similar makes the perfect altar but do bear in mind your environment. Beaches,

“Make sure all of your suppliers understand you’re planning an outside wedding, particularly your hairstylist and photographer.” Sheila Duncan, Pure Silk Ceremonies

clifftops or large open spaces can get windy, so choose a stylist with experience in dressing outdoor events. Also, bear in mind the position of the sun as you exchange your vows. Having it glaring into your eyes will be uncomfortable and won’t make for the best photographs. Simply mindfully placing your altar at the best angle can overcome the problem,” Jennifer explains.

Once the focal point is taken care of you may want to turn to your big entrance next and consider how you’ll decorate the aisle. “Firstly, you’ll need to make sure it’s wide enough,” Lindsey says. “Then, look at your surroundings. Some plants may be brightly coloured, so it would be a nice

idea to complement them with your wedding colours. Your venue stylist or florist can help you with suggestions. I’d also suggest some lanterns as candles are usually pointless outside. It’s a good plan to have an usher to seat guests, ensuring your beautiful decorations don’t get disturbed and the aisle is kept looking perfect for your arrival.” After you’ve officially tied the knot, make the most of your ceremony decorations and repurpose them for your reception. A moongate or flower arch make ideal selfie or top table backdrops, and aisle flowers can be used as centrepieces. Find out if your stylist or venue team are happy to move them for you, alternatively put your own team together in advance.

CHECK OUT THESE STYLING IDEAS...

❤ Help the bees by giving guests packets of seeds as wedding favours.

❤ Provide plenty of stylish signage to help the flow from A to B particularly if you’re at a rather sprawling outdoor venue.

❤ Barrels and hay bales fit beautifully with the outdoor theme and offer comfy seating or a place to pop your drink down.

❤ Chic natural and earthy colour palettes are totally on trend this year – think hues of green, rust and white. But if your personalities are more colourful, a bright and bold rainbow scheme would work equally well.

❤ You two are the perfect match, but your styling elements don’t have to be! Mismatched or upcycled furniture and tableware bring an oh-so cool and relaxed vintage vibe.

❤ Keep guests of all ages entertained with lawn games.

❤ Try individual jam jars or coloured glass vases filled with wild flowers dotted along the centre of banquet tables rather than large, structured arrangements.

❤ Embrace the informal rustic vibe with dreamcatchers, macrame, streamers and bunting.

Map out an itinerary of the big day – how much time will be spent where and when – and share this with your transport company. Here, you’ll want to take time to consider if there are any factors along the way that will affect your transport, such as whether your ceremony and reception are in different locations and if you want the car to stay for photos. We recommend seeking out suppliers who will only book your vehicle for your wedding for the day, meaning they won’t be constantly clock-watching.Discusstravel

times with your transport provider and bear in mind some vehicles can travel faster than others! Just because your car can get from A to B in a certain time, it doesn’t mean a vintage motor or horse and carriage can cover the same distance as fast!

Finally on this note, be prepared! Check in with your driver or company the week of the wedding to make sure they have the correct address, timing and emergency phone numbers.

THE FINE PRINT

Make sure you check out every detail of the agreement when you book and ensure you know exactly what’s included. Here are a few of the things you’ll need to look out for:

❤ How long do you have the transport for?

❤ Is there a charge for unforeseen overtime?

❤ Will there be an extra charge for photos?

How are you being charged? Is it a flat fee or based on mileage and petrol costs? How much is the deposit?

❤ Does the supplier have a contingency plan in place in case of vehicle breakdown or driver illness?

REPUTATION

Always look for a reputable supplier you can rely on. Seek out a company with plenty of great reviews and arrange to meet them. It’s also worth asking to see the vehicle you’ll be riding in on the day so there are no surprises. If they’re reluctant to show you, there’s something amiss! Wedding fairs offer a good opportunity for this. Also, don’t be afraid to ask to see details of insurance and licensing.

GET CREATIVE

Just as you would any element of your day, you can look for transport to fit your personalities as well as the vibe for your day. For a rustic wedding, think super-cool VW Campervans; for a vintage vibe consider a Rolls Royce; or for a touch of the traditional and classic opt for a sleek, modern Mercedes, such as the luxury E-Class or S-Class from https://hollywoodcars.co.uk

https://hollywoodcars.co.ukImagesGetty74

ALL ABOARD!

Have a think about who you need to provide transport for. While this might largely depend on your budget, you may want to give a thought to your guests if your ceremony and reception are some distance apart, or if the venue is particularly difficult to reach. If you’re asking your loved ones to make a tricky journey, you might want to lend them a hand.

Aintree Coachline has been providing transport for all occasions since 1986 and offers a range of coaches with seating capacity from 35 to 98. The vintage coach is particularly popular and provides a memorable, fun experience for your nearest and dearest! Check out www.aintreecoachline.com

WHEN TO BOOK

The quick answer is: as early as possible. Some suppliers will have one vehicle, their pride and joy, and can only be in one place at one time so secure your date to avoid disappointment.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Find out whether your supplier provides any décor in the shape of palettefitting ribbons or flowers for the parcel shelf as part of the package or for an additional charge. If not, check whether they’re happy for you to make your own arrangements.

We also recommend enquiring about the chauffeur’s attire! You don’t want anyone letting the side down, and full livery looks oh-so smart.

SNAP HAPPY

You’ve devoted as much care and attention to choosing your transport as to any other element of your day, so don’t miss out on capturing those all-important photographs. When booking make sure you’ve allocated time for this.

If your ceremony and reception are at the same venue, why not ask if you can take a little trip together just the two of you, after the “I dos”? This time to soak up those first few moments as newlyweds will be precious and memorable. Plus, if you can bring your photographer along, there’ll be opportunities to get some couple shots at some fabulous locations along the way.

SURPRISE!

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN?

Your guests will need to be the first to arrive at the ceremony, and they’ll be followed by the groom and groom’s party. Traditionally, the bridesmaids travel to the ceremony with the mother-of-the-bride, while the bride follows on afterwards with her father, or whoever she has chosen to walk her down the aisle. Think about your budget and ask your prospective suppliers what they’d recommend. Some may be able to make repeat journeys to come back for different members of the wedding party, others may suggest you book multiple vehicles if this isn’t practical. To save money you could hire one vehicle for the bride, later for the newlyweds, and book taxis for your best girls.

One thing’s for sure, you won’t be short on space or wow factor in Hollywood Cars’ Ford Excursion Stretch Limo, which can seat up to 13 passengers. It comes complete with fully-equipped bar, VIP area, bluetooth music palyer, USB, iPod connection, TV and DVD. Check out https://hollywoodcars.co.uk

Looking for an extra special gift for your spouse-to-be and their party on the morning of the wedding? A sports car to get them to the ceremony on time will certainly be one to remember for the motoring enthusiast!

CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Our big day is fast approaching and we’ve decided to book a videographer, but we’re not sure what to look for. Do you have any tips?

Check out videographers who have a good social media following and a professional website with plenty of reviews and examples of previous work. I’d also recommend contacting them to check availability as soon as possible, and let them know what you’d like filmed on your special day. It’s also important to discuss budget as there are suppliers, like me, who are happy to work around what you want to spend. A reputable videographer will be happy to show you examples of their previous work and will ask you questions to discover your wants and needs.

A TASTE OF AUTUMN

How can we reflect the best of the autumn through our wedding cake?

For me, the best of autumn is the array of colours and warm food on a cold, rainy night. If you’re having a wedding at this time of year, here are four ways to incorporate the season into your cake:

❤ Flowers. A simple yet stunning way to bring your day together, incorporate your wedding florals onto your cake to add a pop of colour.

❤ Flavours. A heavier, spiced or currant-filled sponge is perfect for an autumnal wedding. We offer flavours such a custard cake with spiced cinnamon apple compote, and sticky toffee with dates and all spice, which are both ideal for bringing in those warm, spicy notes.

❤ Coloured tiers. This is sure to make a statement! However, if you’ve been thinking about creating a display for your cake, or if you’ve hired a venue stylist, then I’d recommend this option. Your big-day bake will be remembered for all the right reasons.

❤ Ribbon. Simple and stylish. A luxurious ribbon can effortlessly bring in those classic autumnal hues. It’s one of the most underrated details you can have on a cake. Perfect for all those classic couples out there, and easy on the budget too!

We want our loved ones to enjoy our wedding as much as we will. Can you offer any advice for planning entertainment to keep a smile on their faces?

It may be your big day, but for many guests, it’s a big bore if you don’t get the details and entertainment just right! A survey conducted by Silver Service Singers, of more than 2,000 wedding goers revealed some surprising truths, which should help you make your big day one to remember.

The ceremony going on too long and the photographs immediately afterwards are critical points for keeping your guests engaged. Nearly 40 per cent of those asked lost interest at the photographs. According to the survey, the speeches on average should all take less than 30 minutes and when it comes to the wedding breakfast Brits believe it should last for a maximum of 90 minutes. One word of caution, don’t sit guests on a table where they don’t know anyone as 31 per cent said this spoiled their day.

This has been the year of the wedding after numerous couples have had to delay and rearrange their big days due to the pandemic. But keeping the pace and entertaining guests is critical as folks’ interest can wane over the course of a long day, especially if the ceremony starts at the most popular time of midday. Ask your venue what they’ve done in the past, or what they’re happy to do for your big day. The more questions you ask, the easier it’ll be to make decisions on things like entertainment and how the day will unfold. Check out our infographic guide to timing your day and you won’t go too far wrong.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

We have a lot of guests with dietary requirements coming to our wedding, not least my husband-to-be. But we’d still like them to be able to enjoy our cake. Is this possible?

Indeed, it’s essential that dietary requirements are considered when catering for your guests for the safety and accommodation of everyone involved. But, there are plenty of flavour options to meet the needs of most. It just means there could be a few restrictions when it comes to certain designs and styles, since working with free-from ingredients can have its challenges in terms of structure and finish.

Always ask lots of questions about what’s involved and make sure your cake maker adheres to food safety rules set by the government in terms of allergens.

LEAVE YOUR MARK

I’m looking for a gorgeous piece of jewellery to give my mother as a gift on the morning of my wedding. Are there any pieces you would recommend?

When it comes to giving a gift to commemorate an occasion as special as your wedding day, our advice is to make it Ourgift,yourselfputasday.youthathowshejustyourSomethingpersonal.thatletsmotherknowhowimportantistoyouandmuchitmeansshe’stherewithonyourspecialIwouldgofarastosaysomethingofintothatquiteliterally.rangeofkeepsake

jewellery can be engraved with your fingerprints to allow you to leave the most personal of marks on that gift. Fingerprints, handprints even your own handwriting or a small drawing can be engraved onto your chosen gift. Available as bracelet charms, pendants, lockets or rings to name just a few options, there’s something to suit everyone, allowing you to make this gift as personal as you like. Coupled with a special message or indeed the date of your big day, these pieces become a lasting memento treasured by your loved ones for years to come. What better way to show your mother how you feel about her on this memorable occasion?

The Bridgerton effect

Everyone’s favourite period drama re-entered our lives with a bang at the end of March when season two of Bridgerton became Netflix’s most viewed English-language TV series, watched for 251.7 million hours in its debut week alone.

And the show is certainly not going anywhere, having been renewed for both seasons three and four back in April of last year, following the huge success of season one.

Many of us are captivated by the opulence and extravagance of high society shown on our screens and so desperate to feed some historical glamour into our own lives – especially during our big day.

Regency era and Bridgerton-themed celebrations are set to be one of the biggest wedding trends this year. Achieving this lavish style may seem impossible at first but we’ve broken down some of the simplest ways to inject 18th-century luxury into your nuptials.

VENUES

One aspect that defines the awe-inspiring beauty of the show is the grand country homes and sweeping ballrooms.

As nearly all of the filming for the show took place in the South of England, many of the real locations you see in the show can in fact be hired out for your wedding celebrations.

In the opening episode of the first season, the outdoor Vauxhall Ball set the standard for the grandness we could expect.

The parklands of Stowe House (www.stowe.co.uk) in Bedfordshire was the location for these scenes, the 17th-century Ducal Palace boasts individuality and elegance for a fairytale wedding.

The ballrooms in Leigh Court (www.leighcourt.co.uk) in Bristol are where we see many of the characters dance together at a number of parties held throughout the series. The 19th-century mansion is surrounded by 27 acres of wooded grounds and green lawns, and the grand double staircase in the Great Hall is perfect for making your first entrance as a married couple.

COLOUR PALETTE

The Regency era was defined by the baby blue colour that can be spotted in almost every episode. Known as Regency blue, it is the perfect hue to weave into your flowers, decorations or dress code.

For a 21st-century update, Pantone have named the colour of 2022 ‘Very Peri’. The shade of violet-infused blue is perfect for a subtle nod to the Bridgerton world.

Soft tones of blush and pink were also extremely popular at the time and are perfect for creating an ultra romantic setting when you tie the knot. Take inspiration from Princess Beatrice of York’s wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in summer of 2020, the pretty pinks and fresh natural palette were a more modern twist on a classic regal wedding.

INVITATIONS

Sending out your invitations to your guests is one of the first ways to set the tone for your wedding. Handwritten notes featuring swooping calligraphy perfectly encapsulate the elegant nature of yourIncorporatecelebration.watercolour and impressionist-style florals into your stationery for a whimsical affair. Gold detailing and other refined touches make sure your wedding stationery gives a perfect nod to the Regency era. Sealing your invites with a wax seal will make guests feel as though they’re receiving salacious gossip from Lady Whistledown herself.

FLOWERS

Any watcher of Bridgerton will know the budget they had for flowers when making the show was pretty impressive. The dreamy purple wisteria that draped over the exterior of the Bridgerton family’s residence caused fans mass hysteria, as many were keen to recreate the swoon-worthy look.

Although it can be hard to get your hands on, if you’re having a spring time wedding you may be lucky as many country house wedding venues have wisteria climbing up the outside of their buildings. It’s definitely something worth asking your venue about.

If you want to recreate the lush floral arrangements seen in Daphne’s wedding to the Duke of Hastings in the first season, shown last year, English garden-style arrangements with fresh greenery are best to create that clean and natural setting.

Standing beneath a floral arch, just like Daphne and Simon, when saying your vows will ensure your photographer can capture some dreamy and ethereal images from your ceremony.

FASHION

It’s not just on screen fashion that has been inspired by the extravagance of the Regency era. Those attending this year’s Met Gala were asked to adhere to the dress code ‘Gilded Glamour’, taking inspiration from the high society of Gilded Age New York during the late 1800s.

For a wedding gown fit to make you a diamond of the first water lots of inspiration can be taken from the dresses of this time.

Empire waist gowns were extremely popular during the time period and it’s unsurprising considering how flattering they are. For an ultraromantic style look for a dress with capped sleeves also.

Corsets were, of course, a huge part of fashion in the Regency era and now they are once again having resurgence. Whilst during the time

period they were a part of the undergarments worn by the bride, now they can be a featured part of your ensemble.

One easy way to add a touch of gilded glamour to your look is by accessorising with opera gloves. To modernise your wedding gown a sheer pair is the way forward.

Grooms can take inspiration from the dukes of Bridgerton and wear a morning suit complete with a tailcoat for a look that can compete with Jane Austen’s Mr Darcy.

To ensure all your guests are involved with the theme of your celebrations, a black tie or formal wear dress code can encourage everyone to attend in their finery.

CAKE

One of the most spectacular visuals from Daphne and Simon’s wedding was a massive wedding cake that stood at 4.5-foot tall.

In addition to its impressive height, the centrepiece was extremely detailed, right down to the Bridgerton and Hastings crests iced on.

Detailed, extravagant cakes are certainly making a comeback in 2022. This year the UK’s oldest British caterer is recreating a royal wedding cake made by its founder 126 years ago, to celebrate their 175thSearcy’sanniversary.catering (https://searcys.co.uk) has taken a trip back through its archives to the cake made for the1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Five-tiersDenmark.of

Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold lattice work icing before topped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits, cherubs and lions all recreated by the cakemakers. This style of cake is perfect for those going all out regalia-inspired on their wedding day.

Pressed floral cakes are a great option for those still inspired by the 18th century but wanting a more earthy, whimsical feel for their day. Bakeries typically use edible flowers grown, picked and hand-pressed. They can be designed according to your favourite flowers and even match your bouquet.

ENTERTAINMENT

One of the ofmemorablemostelements

Bridgerton that audiences hold close to their heart is the orchestral renditions of pop throughoutsongsthe show.

Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift played by string ensemble provides the backdrop for Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma’s courtship in season two. If you wish to recreate this soundtrack for your own love story, a string quartet or harpist will produce the perfect atmosphere for walking down the aisle or during your first dance.

If you too want a mixture of classical and chart tunes, ask your guests to suggest some of their favourite tracks to be played by your musicians.

If you plan on getting hitched in the warmer months, traditional lawn games are an amazing era-inspired way to entertain your guests after the ceremony. A game of croquet before the evening celebrations is fun for both young and older guests alike.

DECORATION

Maximalists rejoice as the only way to decorate a Regency era-inspired wedding is to go all out. And we mean ALL OUT.

Look to see if your venue has a chandelier, as this is a perfect way to recreate the grand atmosphere seen in the Bridgerton world.

Oversized centrepieces are a signature of nearly all the weddings and balls held in the series. Work with your florist and wedding planner to create some awe-inspiring table decorations your guest will remember.

For your tableware, fine, floral china is a gorgeous nod to 18th-century Britain and the perfect decorative touch for the detail-orientated bride. Gold cutlery or gold-rimmed glassware flaunt opulence and abundance but can be inexpensive if hired.

Having a champagne tower at your reception is the perfect indulgence enjoyed by high society – and your guests too. It’s a great touch to follow your wedding toast or a grand welcome as your guests enter.

Nicole Petty, haircare expert for Milk + Blush, shares 2022’s most popular wedding hair trends and how to achieve them

▲ FLIPPY BOB

We often think of long hair being the height of romance, but shorter wedding hair is having a moment in 2022. Many have taken inspiration from Kourtney Kardashian's latest look and have adopted her flippy bob for their big days.

To get the look, use a hair mousse for plenty of volume. Then, with a round brush, blow dry the ends upwards to create the flick. Follow with the cool setting to help your locks stay in place and finish by spritzing with hairspray.

▲ MESSY BUN

Although, achieving the perfect messy bun can feel like an impossible task TikTok has the answer with a viral hack that’s seen more than six millionSectionviews…your hair into two ponytails and twist into rope braids. Next, tie the ends of the hair back into the pony to create two loops. Finally, thread one loop through the other to create the bun and secure in place with bobby pins. To elevate the look into the bridal realm, pull out some face-framing tendrils and loosely curl them for the ultimate romantic up do.

PONYTAILPOLISHED

▲ HOLLYWOOD WAVES

Nothing exudes glamour like Hollywood waves, a firm favourite among brides. Jennifer Lopez showed just how stunning the style can be at her recent wedding to Ben Affleck, styling her hair in loose curls, with the top layer pulled back into a subtle bouffant.

To recreate the look, use a oneinch curling iron to curl the tresses in layers from the bottom up, holding the curling iron horizontally and rolling the hair downwards as though you’re using rollers. Finish by gently combing through and positioning the hair to create continuous waves before holding the still-hot curling iron against where they dip and clip them in place to cool and set.

▲ HALF-UP, HALF-DOWN

Romantic, versatile and effortlessly elegant this has been one of the most popular styles for brides to wear this year.

Almost anyone can wear a half-up, half-down do, but for those with fine hair, consider investing in some extensions for more body. Focus on creating some height at the crown with some volumising spray and

HEAT TRAP

I’m getting married next year and given 2022’s terrifying temperature records, I’m worried about overheating in my gown. What should I be looking for when dress shopping?

Heather says: The last thing you want to be is overheating on your wedding day! Quite often brides forget to think about the weather or temperature, which is why visiting a bridal boutique exaclty one year before the big day is a good idea. It will give you a good understanding of the weather, or at the very least, the temperatures you can expect.

As for the dress itself, it’s worth knowing what you want to prioritise. If comfort is important, then look for a gown with fewer layers. Chiffon, for example, is a great way of keeping the floating movement of a dress, but is light and breathable. If you have your heart set on a ballgown or princess style, an underskirt or hoop will keep the lining and inner layers of it away from your legs, helping you to keep cool. You’ll feel much more comfortable and it’ll also prevent you tripping over the skirts!

Be aware too: sleeves can be hotter than they look. Illusion sleeves can appear to let a breeze through, but in reality they’re very good at trapping the heat next to your skin.

Finally, make sure there’s plenty of shade and water available for the both of you, and your guests.

HEAVEN SCENT

I’m looking for the perfect perfume for my wedding day. Do you have any suggestions on where to start?

Hollie says: When it comes to planning your special day, selecting your ideal wedding perfume will not only complete your outfit, it will also remind you of the big day for years to come. Scents are renowned for triggering memories, so what better way to remember your momentous and unforgettable occasion than through a new scent for your big day?

You can, of course, choose whichever fragrance you love. But I’d recommend trying a completely new discovery, something you’ve never worn before. This ensures it has no relation to any previous memory and means the new scent will always transport you back to your wedding.

You’ll also want a fragrance that will last throughout the day, so opt for an eau de parfum, which has a higher concentration of fragrance oil (around 25 per cent), which typically makes them stronger and longer lasting. Also, look for such notes as patchouli, white musk, sandalwood, tuberose, vetiver, and freesia as these linger on the skin for longer.

Check out Lancôme La Via Est Belle, Barbour Female, Carolina Herrera Good Girl Supreme, Jennifer Lopez Promise, Ghost Orb Of Night and Estée Lauder Beautiful – all great bridal fragrances. Alternatively, if you’re struggling to find the perfect scent match, flirt before you buy with The Fragrance Shop scentaddict subscription, and choose a new 8ml fragrance each month for £12. They’re also perfect to carry with you on the big day.

BRIDE & TESTED

As you’ll know if you’ve been following her Bride’s Dairy features, our own CWM bride, Melissa Barker (now Cullen), tied the knot this summer. When her make-up artist advised at her trial that she begin a skincare regime and invest in a moisturiser, exfoliator and eye cream, we leapt into action to find the best products for her. Here, Melissa shares her skincare journey to W-day…

Glossybox Skincare Exfoliating Clay Scrub £13, www.glossybox.co.uk100ml,

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this exfoliating scrub, but after just one use, my skin felt smoother and healthier. Unlike many other exfoliators I’ve tried, this wasn’t too harsh on my skin, but still did a great job of cleaning my pores. After six weeks of use, I still have over half of the 100ml bottle left, so it’s great value for money, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Ameliorate Replenishing Facial £24,Cream75ml, www.ameliorate.com

I was a little apprehensive about trying this face cream, as more often than not, new products make my skin break out. I was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt hydrated and smooth and best of all, it didn’t cause any unwanted reactions. I’ve been using this twice a day for six weeks, and I’ve definitely seen a smoother and softer result.

Perricone MD Cold Plasma Plus + Eye £83, www.lookfantastic.com15ml,

This cream is designed to reduce the look of dark spots and smooth the appearance of lines, wrinkles and uneven texture underneath your eyes. I’m 27 and like to think I don’t have too many wrinkles yet, but I do have dark circles, so I was interested to see whether this cream would help. After six weeks of use, it had decreased the puffiness around my eyes and has made the dark circles less noticeable. It’s left my skin feeling soft and hydrated, and a little goes a long way.

JUST CHILL

When Patchology’s Rosé Sheet Masks landed on my desk in the middle of the summer heatwave I couldn’t wait to get home and chill. Literally that is, as the pack states “served chilled,” so I popped them in the fridge post haste. I’d been suffering with very dry skin, which had me in a panic about Melissa’s impending wedding day and how it would affect the look of my make-up – one more reason to take this mask out for a spin as it’s packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid. Even the pack adorned with champagne glasses looks wedding ready!

So, I smoothed one of these chilled sheets masks onto my hot and bothered face and settled myself on the patio with a glass of wine and a book. Let me tell you, after a scorching day, this was heaven. It calmed my angry skin right down, but not only that, the dry patches were much improved after massaging the remaining serum into my skin. In fact, my make-up artist wasn’t sure what I was worried about when I shared my dry skin woes on the big day, and my foundation went on a dream. Thanks Patchology! £28 for four masks, https://patchology.co.uk

THINK PINK

Premium Spanish spa brand Germaine de Capuccinni will be ditching the usual grey bottle of its hero product, Timexpert SRNS Repair Night Progress Serum, in favour of a pink version in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The brand’s most technologically advanced booster serum for youthful, rejuvenated skin is packed with no less than 22 active ingredients. Having evolved over the years, its new formula includes an innovative ingredient that increases the power of absorption by eight, making the serum penetrate deeper for fast, effective results. At night, while your skin is more receptive, it repairs damage and re-activates cellular regeneration. During the day it protects skin against environmental factors and external aggressors. £127.50, https://germaine-de-capuccini.co.uk

RAISING THE BAR

Far from an ordinary bar of soap, le savon lune from silver-based brand ARgENTUM is an ingenious cleanser in solid form, making it perfect for popping into your suitcase as you head off on honeymoon.

Any water content in the product is replaced with the brand’s patented fusion of silver hydrosol and DNA HP, and targets blemishes while leaving skin clean, cushioned and visibly healthier. Great for men or women, the formulation is also enhanced by bentonite, a colloidal clay composed of aged volcanic ash, traditionally used for its healing effect. Combined with other winning ingredients, this ensures a purifying action without dehydrating or irritating your skin, keeping it in check without upsetting its natural balance. £80, www.argentumapothecary.com

SILKY SMOOTH

According to experts, keratosis pilaris or strawberry legs is something that’s present in 80 per cent of adolescents and 40 per cent of adults and is aggravated by heat and sun exposure. At last count #strawberrylegs peaked at 144.9 million views, but is still growing. Enter Luna Daily’s Everything Oil, this skincare saviour is clinically proven to visibly reduce ingrown hairs, scars, stretch marks, dark spots, redness and bumps for smooth, soft skin. Plus, this lightweight and deeply moisturising, multi-tasking oil is gentle enough to use anywhere on your body. £18, https://luna-daily.com

AU NATUREL

If you prefer to de-fuzz at home, check out Parissa’s 100 per cent natural cruelty-free and leaping-bunny-certified wax range. The products and their packaging are all made from sustainable, ethically-sourced, natural materials, so if you care as much about the environment as you do about what you put on your skin, give them a go. Say “no” to synthetic waxes!

There are a wide range of options available depending on your experience and hair type. I tried Parissa Legs & Body Warm Wax (£13). Just pop it in the microwave to warm it up and you’re off! Everything you need is included from spatulas to strips. I decided to wax one leg and shave the other for comparison. There’s a slight chance I over heated the product as my waxed leg was livid with me afterwards. However, the redness had all gone down by the morning and I was left with a silky-smooth result versus the shaved leg, which was dry and still a bit rough. The waxed leg was good to go beyond the spray tan too, so I didn’t need to risk any damage, and lasted past Melissa’s wedding and well into the following week before I needed to take further action. My advice would be to start with the wax strips if you’re not used to waxing at home or have sensitive skin, but I was super-pleased with the results.

TIME TO SHINE

The days of using a wealth of products on your hair are over with TAOH, as the brand makes taking care of your locks a doddle with its line of key products with all-in-one solutions to help you achieve the glossiest, most luxe-looking and healthy tresses no matter the type or condition.

The Hydrate Shampoo (£17) and Conditioner (£18) are now a mainstay in my shower and are infused with organic plant oils that have breathed new life into my hair. By far my favourite product in the range though is the TAOH Oil (£20). Argan, macadamia and kukui oils help to restore the life and shine of locks, while promoting scalp health to encourage growth and vitality. It also prevents split ends, calms frizz and detangles. I used it after washing my hair the morning of Melissa’s wedding and received multiple compliments throughout the day about how shiny it

British independent designer, The Camden Watch Company has announced its move into jewellery. The new Memento Mori 925 sterling silver unisex ring is adorned with the company’s Memento Mori design.

Memento Mori translates as: ‘Remember you must die’, a recurring theme in Victorian jewellery and art. Contrary to how that may sound, Memento Moris was intended as a celebration of life, to remind us that life is short and every second counts.

Anneke Short, designer and co-founder of The Camden Watch Company, said: “While watch design has always been a passion, I originally studied jewellery making and decided it was time to pursue this. While I love all the products we make, the Memento Mori seemed most natural, especially with its link to the Victorian era who had a fascination with collecting Memento Mori keepsakes.”

Our happily ever after

County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Cullen shares her wedding planning journey Images courtesy of www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

My husband (it still feels weird saying that) and I were engaged for 18 months before we finally tied the knot. Planning our wedding during a global pandemic wasn’t something I ever imagined happening, but thankfully, despite the ups and downs, we managed to have our

special day. I know it’s cliché to say, but we really did have the perfect day, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. Now that I’m finally Mrs Cullen, I thought I’d take the time to share with you some tips that I learnt from planning our big day...

We chose a rustic property that looked gorgeous all year round. Ourwedding coordinator, Eloise, took care of all the details and madesure everything ran seamlessly. We arranged a last minute meetingwith her to run through the plan for the day, which we found was agreat help and meant we knew exactly what to expect. I recommendbooking a venue with a dedicated wedding coordinator or hiring anexternal company, so that you can relax and enjoy yourself withouthaving to worry.

Flowers can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to us. If like me, you’re awful with flower names, I’d suggest going for a ready-made package. I told our florist what I liked and left the rest to her - a decision that saved me hours of stress! One thing I didn’t consider was just how many flowers we would need to take home the next day. We gave our friends and family some of the centrepieces as gifts, which they loved, and it meant we didn’t have to take them all home with us - win, win!

I didn’t anticipate how I would feel after purchasing my dress. I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-with-emotion moment when wearing it, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. My poor bridesmaids had to deal with so many meltdowns about it, but now that the day has been and gone, I can say that the dress was perfect for me. If you start to panic that you’ve made the wrong choice, think about how you felt when you first tried it on and cling to that feeling. I had several photos of myself in the dress that I would obsess over and criticise, and if I could go back in time, I would delete those photos so I wouldn’t waste time worrying. On the day, with your hair and make-up done, you’ll feel amazing, and all those doubts will drift away. Go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, and do what makes you happy!

Dave and I met our andamazingfriend’swhilephotographerhewasworkingatawedding.Hehasanstylethatwebothloved,wefoundhimreallyeasytobearound.Oneofthebestthingswedidintherun-uptotheweddingwasbookapre-weddingshoot.Wewerebothquitenervousinfrontofthecamera,andthisputusateaseandmeantthatwhenwegottothebigday,webothfeltrelaxedhavingourpicturetaken.

BRIDE’S DIARY 111

As some of you may remember, make-up is not my forte, and I’m embarrassed to tell you that I can’t tell the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer! I booked a trial with my hair and make-up artist a few weeks before the wedding. If you’re worried about how you’ll look on the day or want to try different styles, I would definitely recommend doing this. I’m so glad I did, and it meant that I felt relaxed knowing that my suppliers had everything under control on the day.

One thing that we learnt after the wedding is that everyone loves cake! We purchased 50 cake boxes as we’ve both been to weddings where it gets left at the end of the night, so we thought that would be more than enough. However, those 50 went within an hour, and we had guests asking for additional pieces, so I would definitely provide more boxes than you need.

Surround yourself with people that you trust and love. My bridesmaids were amazing in the run-up to the wedding and on the day itself. They spoiled me with two hen dos, which were fabulous, a wedding-themed advent calendar full of fun and thoughtful gifts and endless support and love throughout the planning process. Trust me when I say that you will feel calmer on the wedding morning if you’re surrounded by your best friends. They made sure I looked and felt perfect, and I don’t think I could have done it without them.

Dave and I knew we wanted a band for our evening reception thatwould get everyone up and dancing. We booked an amazing trio wholearnt our first dance song and incorporated some of our favouritetunes into their set list. We were a bit worried that people would getbored or restless throughout the day, but all of our guests were quitecontent chatting during the drinks reception, and I’m quite glad wekept things scaled back as it allowed us to catch up with friends andfamily who we hadn’t seen in a long time due to the pandemic.

Our ceremony was performed by a registrar, who we didn’t meet untilthe morning of the wedding. Originally, this made me feel anxious butthe whole process went smoothly, and the ladies conducting our servicewere calming and reassuring. We incorporated promises to each otherin our vows that we felt represented us as a couple. For those of youabout to tie the knot, try and forget about all of the small things, asthere’s nothing more special than looking into your partner’s eyes andtelling them how much you love them in front of your loved ones.

Talk to your friends and family and see if they’d like to have an active role in your day. Our mums were really pleased that we asked them to be our witnesses, and it was a lovely way of including them in the ceremony. My beloved bridesmaid, Kelly, also sang a song accompanied by Dave on the guitar during the wedding breakfast. It was really touching and one of my favourite moments from the day.

The ultimate

Olivia Gibson discovers why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

After what felt like an eternity of not being able to travel due to restrictions, I was so excited to visit the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel – especially after seeing images of the stunning property online. For the first time in three years, I packed my bags and headed to theDubrovnikairport!

is a wonderful place to visit, evident even from thousands of feet up in the air. The crystal-clear waters, beautiful beaches and picturesque landscapes create the perfect backdrop for honeymoons –no wonder it’s known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. After a short flight, we touched down and the real adventure began!

THE PERFECT SETTING

With a beachfront location and a showstopping backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, the five-star hotel offers some of the best views in Dubrovnik. From the moment I arrived, the staff were so welcoming and accommodating –nothing was too much trouble.

With 292 luxurious rooms, I couldn’t wait to see where I would spend the next few nights and wasn’t disappointed when I entered the spacious deluxe double room. The air-conditioned space featured double sinks, a waterfall shower, bath, seating area and a queen-sized bed. My favourite part of the room was the balcony, where I spent most of my time soaking up the sun on the loungers.

The hotel has everything needed for memorable holidays from restaurants, bars, pools, a spa area and a gym – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The well-maintained facilities were excellent, and I especially loved the outdoor pool area surrounded by sun loungers – the perfect location to relax your senses.

The beach was located only a few meters from the property and was a wonderful place to relax. With a peaceful atmosphere, crystal-clear waters and the sound of crashing waves, what better location to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life?

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

As a massive food lover, I couldn’t wait to try some local delicacies. The hotel is home to three restaurants; each offering something different to cater for all tastes.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we had a welcoming meal in the Momenti Restaurant. Here I enjoyed a prawn and beetroot starter, sea bass with potatoes and asparagus for main and a tasty chocolate cake

for dessert. The food was divine, especially the fluffy and dreamy potatoes!

Each morning I was greeted with a delicious sea of food, from cereals, pastries, granola and fresh fruit to a selection of hot food, including sausages, omelettes, bacon and hash browns. The buffet restaurant was superb, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of food on offer. Every night the chefs used fresh ingredients to create a fantastic selection of Mediterranean and international specialities that even the fussiest eaters would enjoy. A highlight of my trip was sitting outside on the terrace during dinner, it had a romantic atmosphere and was the perfect location to watch the sun set. For those chilly evenings, guests can sit indoors while enjoying the stunning views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. One of my favourite meals from the restaurant was a spaghetti dish - the flavours were unbelievable and I wish I knew the recipe!

For more of a relaxed meal, the Miramare is a beachfront restaurant that offers panoramic views and a wide range of food. It was here where I enjoyed a chicken BLT, the best sandwich I’d ever eaten, and sipped on someWecocktails. hadafarewell

meal at the Momenti Restaurant on our last night at the hotel’s sister property – Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel. After a short walk, we arrived at the sophisticated space and enjoyed a goose liver pâté with puff pastry pears, followed by scallops and a hazelnut and chocolate cake to finish. Croatia is well known for its wine, so of course I had to try a few glasses.  destination

I couldn’t fault the service, the staff were always very attentive, friendly and professional. My glass was never empty, and I felt thoroughly looked after.

TIME TO EXPLORE

What better way to explore Dubrovnik than on an electric tuktuk? The tour started at the portside market in Gruz Harbour where we got a chance to see the local area and fishermen. We had so much fun whizzing around the streets and enjoying the incredible views, especially from the Franjo Tuđman Bridge. I loved visiting the top of Srđ Mountain and seeing the beautiful islands off the coast. The guides were excellent and they shared so much history and knowledge.

The hotel is only a few minutes from the charming Old Town, which is enclosed by Medieval walls, and is a must-visit destination. Game of Thrones fans would recognise the spaces from the much-loved show as the town was a filming destination for some very iconic scenes.

In the Old Town you’ll find cobbled streets, bars, shops and restaurants, alongside many awe-inspiring historical features and architecture. The town has survived chronicled events, such as the 17th-century earthquake and The Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s.

REST AND RELAX

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is home to the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Here we truly indulged in the facilities and treatment menu. I had a 35-minute de-stress massage which I was nervous about at first, as I’d never had a massage before, but the team were fantastic and put my mind at ease. My body felt amazing and I will be getting another one soon! I walked out of the room completely at peace and headed straight to the waterbeds in the relaxation room. There are many other treatments guests can book too including facials, pedicures, manicures, body treatments and more.

The facilities in the spa were great with a steam room and saunas, indoor pool and, for ladies-only, The Afrodita Spa.

Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel is perfect for those on a budget who still want to enjoy pure luxury. This four-spa hotel has many stylish rooms, a refurbished lobby and pool area.

FUN IN THE SUN

I highly recommend visiting the Coral Beach Club Dubrovnik for those staying in either hotel. With beach activities, excellent dining, entertainment, bars and spa elements, this popular space is not one to miss! The food here was fantastic and it’s the ideal space to spend a few hours relaxing with a cocktail in hand.

THE FINAL VERDICT

I couldn’t fault my stay at the Dubrovnik President Valamar Collection Hotel. If you’re searching for the perfect honeymoon destination, look no further. The hotel provides the most romantic setting to relax and enjoy quality time with loved ones.

FROM MADRIDWith love

Editor Claire Ridley spent Easter in Spain’s vibrant capital city

From the moment I arrived in Madrid, a two-and-a-half hour flight from London, I was greeted by a myriad of narrow streets and large squares filled with landmarks to fill my Insta feed at every turn, from the iconic Royal Palace of Madrid and Plaza Mayor to the eclectic mix of boutiques, tapas restaurants and bars. This extended bank holiday is a great time to visit when the weather has warmed up (average temperature 67 degrees) but the heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended on the city.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this largest city in Spain, tucked away on Calle de Echegaray, sits the five-star Gran Hotel Inglés, Madrid’s oldest hotel having opened its doors for the first time in 1886. Located a 25-minute drive from the airport, I was excited to visit this boutique property, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, that oozes the glamour of bygone times from the moment you step into the decadent 1920s-inspired lobby with its feature bar, mirrored walls and Art Deco touches.

into a delicious menu of pastries, cold meats and cheese, eggs benedict and a selection of miniature desserts washed down with a Cosmopolitan cocktail, all while enjoying live music from talented singer, songwriter and guitarist Gigi (www.instagram.com/gigimcfarlane).McFarlane

with a choice of L’Occitane bath products. A highlight was the balcony providing outside space in the city –stepping on to it and admiring the view, I felt like I was in a movie.

DINE IN STYLE

Restaurant Casa Lobo in the hotel is well-known on the Madrid dining scene, with its open-plan kitchen serving traditional dishes. A highlight for me was the Show Brunch, priced at 45 euros per person and served every Sunday in the lobby, where I tucked

TAKE A DIP

A fun way of giving my body a little TLC after a day spent sightseeing was a visit to the dedicated spa facility and wellness area where I reserved the jacuzzi and had exclusive use of the entire spa. Tempting treatments on the extensive spa menu that uses Sisley products include an aromatic Californian massage.

WHAT TO SEE

A visit to the tourist hotspot Sol-Gran Via is a must, where adjoining streets blend culture and history with theatres, restaurants and shops. El Retiro Park provides a green oasis in the heart of the city, the perfect spot for a picnic with its pretty Rosaleda Rose Garden and a large artificial lake where rowing boats can be rented.

DO NOT DISTURB

The hotel boasts 48 luxurious rooms and suites, from the spacious Deluxe and Grand Deluxe Rooms to the Echegaray Suite (bearing the same name as the street outside) which was my home-from-home for three nights. This stylish space sleeps up to four people in two large suites interconnected by a hallway (perfect if you’re enjoying a family-moon). There are two king-size beds with a pillow menu that guaranteed my beauty sleep, two fully equipped bathrooms with waterfall showers and a freestanding vintage-inspired bathtub

Last but certainly not least, the La Latina neighbourhood situated in the heart of Madrid, dating back to the Middle Ages, is home to the famous El Rastro Flea Market which was top of my list to discover. Allow some time in this bustling area that offers a romantic mix of old meets new. Viva España! IT: Rates at from approx £325 per room per night on a bed and breakfast
