an you believe we’re now into summer already? Sure, I’m looking forward to longer days, sunny conditions and barbecues with friends, but above all I’m excited about the triumphant return of weddings. And boy, have you all waited long enough! I can’t wait to see how your plans come to life and can see big days being even more celebratory than they previously were, if that’s even possible. We’ve all developed a deeper appreciation for the finer things in life over the past 18 months, love being chief among them, and to see it taking centre stage once more is something I’m thrilled about. So, as soon as Boris gives the green light, grab your loved ones, hug them as tight as possible and party like it’s 1999! And, when you’ve done that, don’t forget to head over to www.yourcheshiremerseyside.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding and tell us all about it, so we can spread the joy. If there’s one thing I do know, it’s that as giddy as you are at the prospect of finally going ahead with your well-deserved dream day, your suppliers will be every bit as cock-a-hoop to be getting back to what they love. They can’t hide their lights under a bushel for long, so as usual; this issue is about showcasing what they do best. I’ve rounded up my highlights for you across these two pages, so dive in to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Bohemian-look weddings are here to stay, so our fashion editor Claire has rounded up her top whimsical wedding dresses, perfect for this vibe. See page 65.

The rooms all have thermostatically controlled slim line radiators and beds, blankets, toys, scratch posts, bowls are all provided, along with a wide selection from the a la cat menu. iki and Jonny met on an evening out with friends in Liverpool. They exchanged numbers, but due to the long hours they both worked in the NHS they only managed to keep in touch via social media at first. But before long they discovered a shared sense of humour and outlook. “Jonny always made me laugh and smile whenever I was feeling down,” Niki says. So, despite living some distance apart they began dating and further town the line Jonny moved in with Niki and her son Jakub, who’d really taken to him. Jonny knew that Niki had always wanted to see the Colosseum, so he took her on a city break to Rome. On the second day the pair took a stroll around the historical site, as they’d missed the last entry for that day. As the sun began to set they found a grassy spot to sit and it was there, in the shadow of the Colosseum, that Jonny got down on one knee. “Of course I said ‘yes.’ I then gave him a book I’d had made for him as I know him too well! It told the story of us and how I wanted to marry him. He was shocked but pleased as it confirmed that we were meant to be together.” Niki moved to the UK from from the Czech Republic 10 years ago and with her family still living there it was important to her that when they came to visit for the wedding they’d be able to experience the best the North West had to offer. “We’d looked all over the region for a reception venue to suit our needs until Jonny attended an open evening at West Tower while I was at work and told me that this was the place. Not only was it right on our doorstep, but it was exclusive-use and could accommodate everything we wanted,” Niki tells us. This was the trickiest part of the location decision taken care of then, as Jonny knew he wanted to hold the ceremony at St. Mary’s Church in West Derby, Liverpool as he’d been head chorister in the choir there and his mum is a lay reader, plus Niki too had always dreamed of a church wedding. Read on as the bride shares her account of the big day...

SETTING THE SCENE After much discussion the couple decided on a rose gold theme. The flowers, table dressings, chair covers and centrepieces were all made together so everything matched beautifully. Jonny sourced some rose gold tea light holders and had wooden rose gold place names made for all the guests. He even found some rose gold confetti for the tables – “he knows how much I like sparkly things,” Niki explains. Already stunning, the venue didn’t need much extra embellishment, but the couple did hire a blossom-tree canopy to walk under as they entered and exited the room. They also arranged with local suppliers to have a flower wall backdrop for guests’ photos, as well as light-up LOVE letters. Lovers of the handmade, Niki and Jonny made the favours together. They included some personalised sweets, counters complete with wedding date, small wooden photo holders, drink tokens for the bar, and mints. They also created some children’s favours with small toys to keep them occupied during the speeches. These were all presented in rose gold or cream boxes to complement the theme and table linen. The big-day bake featured three tiers of delicious red velvet cake and a combination of vanilla and rose gold icing with a topper featuring the newlyweds’ names. The church and reception venue were around a 20- to 30-minute drive apart, so Jonny booked vintage wedding cars for Niki and her bridesmaids to travel in. A minibus was also arranged for guests who weren’t driving, ensuring they could get from A to B with ease. 23

REAL WEDDING

LOOKING THE PART It was love at first sight for Niki when she laid eyes on a dress at the Liverpool Wedding Show. However, she’d forgotten the stand she’d seen it on and ended up hunting high and low for it. She even bought a different one, which she later returned as it just didn’t match up. She tells us, “My mother-in-law was absolutely amazing and attended all of the appointments with me. She even found the one at the Wedding House in Liverpool, where I said ‘yes to the dress’ straight away.” Niki added some of her beloved sparkle to the look in the shape of a tiara, earrings, necklace and bracelet. She also wore a lovely pair of Kurt Geiger shoes for the ceremony before changing into some personalised dancefloorready Mrs Yates wedding Converse gifted to her by her groom. Jonny opted for a bold blue suit with dusky pink cravat and white waistcoat. His look allowed him to stand out from the groomsmen who all paired their suits with blue waistcoats. They also managed to find matching children’s suits for Jakub and Jonny’s nephew. The bridesmaids’ outfits were rose gold gowns with top sparkle detail. Niki tells us, “It wasn’t easy for all of them to decide on the same dress, but in the end they agreed on a design and I was pleased with how their look complemented both mine and the groomsmen.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE As the wedding party and guests arrived at West Tower they were greeted with canopies and a violinist, who also entertained throughout the wedding breakfast. Niki says, “We wanted to make our guests feel like VIPs so we made sure there were plenty of snacks and drinks available all day. We served strawberry daiquiris at our evening drinks reception and had a candy cart complete with popcorn and candyfloss – the room smelt amazing!” DJ Steve Mitchell kept the dancefloor full during the evening and guests loved the photo booth set up in a side room. The guest book it provided was a real treat for the newlyweds who wanted a funny reminder of their loved ones – “Seeing how they dressed up for the photos alongside their kind messages made a fantastic keepsake of the day,” Niki remembers.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS Niki says, “The priest who married us was Jonny’s priest at the church as a young boy. It was a wonderful gesture for him to perform the ceremony for us as he’s no longer at St. Mary’s and was there by special arrangement. “Jonny’s 10-year-old nephew sang Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love while we signed the register and Jakub gave a surprise speech at the reception. He was only 10 too at the time, and hadn’t done any public speaking before. Everyone commented on how amazing and funny it was.”

NIKI’S WEDDING WISDOM “When planning your special day please be flexible. Wedding suppliers know their trade and what works and simply doesn’t. You’ll save so much stress by talking and listening to them before making decisions,” the bride shares. 25

ONCE UPON Alex and David’s wedding was styled in a pink floral theme, with a nod to favourite Disney princesses Images courtesy of Stacey Oliver Photography

lex and David were on holiday in Wales together with their little girl, when David popped the question. Deciding to spend a day at their favourite beach in Harlech, father and daughter headed off together to play in the sea while Alex set about laying out a picnic. Before she knew it the pair returned with little one carrying a small glass bottle containing a knot and asking whether mummy would agree to marry daddy. “It was so special to have her there for such a memorable moment,” Alex says. The family then went into town to celebrate with an ice cream! “The moment we set foot inside Delamere Manor we both knew that it was the perfect venue for us,” Alex remembers. With plans for a Thursday wedding so they could carry celebrations over the whole weekend, they loved the nightclub element of the venue as well as the gorgeous grounds. Join us now as the bride shares her treasured memories of the wedding day... 29

One of the day’s highlights for me was seeing the look of my daughter’s and bridesmaids’ faces when they saw me in my dress for the first time. Then when my dad came into the room the pure emotion on his face too was just lovely. I wore a Justin Alexander fitted chantilly lace dress with pearl beading and leaf appliqué detail. It was just perfect from the moment I tried it on. I finished my look with a single-tier floor-length veil and a pearl headpiece to set off my hair. Our flowers were all silk and I wanted dusky pink and cream complemented with lots of green foliage. The stems were hydrangeas, peonies and roses – all of my favourites.

My husband has a laid-back style and wanted to feel himself on the day, so he wore a lightweight wool suit in navy accessorised with a blue floral tie and pocket square. The groomsmen on the other hand had pink linen ties and pocket squares to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses.

A local string quartet played as I walked down the aisle and again at the drinks reception. They were amazing and set a wonderful relaxed feel for the day. 30

REAL WEDDINGS

During the ceremony, one of my oldest friends read a piece written by another friend who I’ve also known since nursery.

The centrepieces featured frosted-silver vases filled with flowers. These were paired with small lanterns and candles in glass or silver holders with a modern-vintage feel. And, as my daughter and I are Disney mad we wanted to bring a big element of this to our wedding without it being too overbearing. So, we incorporated Disney princesses in our place names, which were pink and cream to complement our palette.

We had flowers everywhere, as well as a wall of ivy as a backdrop to our wedding breakfast, so I made sure there was ivy in our bouquets and centrepieces to tie everything together.

As a further nod to our love for Disney our tables were named after the princesses Belle, Aurora, Elsa, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Snow White and Moana. The top table was Ariel as she was our daughter’s favourite at the time.

Favours were heart-shaped biscuits with pink icing to complement the wedding colour palette. We also hired a catering company called Cheeky Chilli Events and I can’t recommend them enough. The food was delicious.

My bridesmaids were dressed in floor-length dresses in dusky pink with lace detail at the top. I wanted my girls to feel comfortable, but look amazing, which they all did. 31

It was incredible to have our little girl be such a big part of our day and having her share our first dance was such a special moment.

We had fantastic alternative 90s dance band, Scratch, play for us in the evening. I’d seen them at a bar in Chester earlier that year and instantly knew they’d get the party going. They created the vibe we wanted and the dancefloor was packed.

Delamere Manor was wonderful, they looked after us and our guests so well, there was no job too small.

Our amazing cake was a naked Victoria sponge decorated with the same flowers as our arrangements. We had our initials as the cake topper.

Relax and take everything in your stride. Don’t worry about things that’re out of your control – what will be will be. Make sure you surround yourself with the people you trust when getting ready, because you want to enjoy that part of the day just as much as the wedding itself.

D

octors Jen and Tom met at Leeds Medical School. “We were just great friends for many years until Tom asked me out on our first date. That was 10 years ago.” Jen explains. Tom took her to their favourite spot in Padstow, Cornwall and proposed over breakfast on the beach. The date was originally set for 28th March, 2020, but unfortunately only five days beforehand the country went into lockdown, so they were forced to postpone. Jen says, “We were both absolutely devastated. After almost two years of planning, then having to cancel the event with less than a week’s notice was heartbreaking.” As doctors, the couple also had to work throughout the pandemic, which was difficult for them, not least because they very sadly lost family members along the way. “We decided that life was too short and that we’d get married on 12th April, 2021,” Jen tells us. This was after no less than five date changes, but with restrictions being eased, this meant that they could invite 15 guests and enjoy a wonderful day together. The main 120-guest reception has been postponed to 2022 and with all they’ve been through the couple are certainly deserving of a prolonged celebration. Read on as the bride tells us more about their beautifully intimate April wedding day...

We both felt completely relaxed on the day – like a weight had finally been lifted. We were able to go ahead and get married, we were so happy.

It was such a joy to finally be able to walk down the aisle with dad towards Tom. My brother James played piano for me as I walked, and then played clarinet as we signed the register. Also, our dog Marley was allowed in the church for the ceremony, which was brilliant.

I wore a lace Justin Alexander dress with a long train. I paired it with a cathedrallength veil to complement the pearls on my Charlotte Mills shoes.

My bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses in thyme green. Only two of the four were able to join us on the day due to restrictions, but we’ll make up for that at our reception next year. My flowergirls wore white dresses with palette-fitting sashes and gypsophila flower crowns.

Tom was dressed in a pale blue checked suit with a thyme green bow tie to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. He also wore an engraved pocket watch that I’d given him. 36

Our favours were charity badges in memory of our beloved grandparents and the centrepiece was made up of foliage with floating candles. We all sat around one square table. It was a very intimate day and meant we got to speak to everyone, which was fantastic.

REAL WEDDING

We enjoyed a delicious three-course meal for the 15 of us at Thornton Manor. The most wonderful harpist played for us during the meal and to mark the end of the day Tom and I shared our first dance and cut the cake.

Intimate weddings are absolutely fantastic. There was no stress and everyone had a fabulous time. You just have to make the best of the situation you have and know that at the end of the day, the most important thing is getting married. The main celebration can wait until it’s safe.

Be organised, stay calm and enjoy every moment – the day just flies by. Don’t stress the little things on the day!

After the wedding we were able to get a few days away together in North Yorkshire. Just having a full week off at the same time is so rare with our rotas! So, it was lovely just to get away and relax. 37 37

With the havoc Covid had wreaked on 2020 weddings at the forefront of their minds, the duo excitedly began sharing ideas for an intimate, outdoor wedding shoot to inspire couples considering a micro celebration in the open air. “We knew the project would need to be about creating a beautiful, inviting, comfortable space embedded in the natural environment, laced with elements to keep newlyweds relaxed, well-fed and entertained. We wanted it to inspire joy while highlighting the importance of a wedding day being about the connection between the couple and encourage people to consider turning a familiar setting such as this on its head to become the most wonderful wedding location,” Heidi explains. Thanks to some meticulous planning and constant monitoring of weather apps the team found themselves bathed in the golden late-summer sunset they’d dreamed of. Heidi continues, “It reminded us that although the last year has provided couples planning their weddings with the biggest of challenges, with love and positivity comes warmth and joy.” 47

VENUE STYLING

FINDING WONDERLAND Style your wedding venue with flair

W

hen faced with the initial blank canvas that is your venue you may view it in one of two ways: with total panic or giddy excitement. In which case, you’ll either be in need of inspiration or focus. So, by way of support, we’ve gathered together our top venue-styling tips and trends. ▲

Think about how you can make use of your venue’s empty corners and fill them with something your guests will go wild for. We love the idea of treat stations, as well as dessert, cake and memory tables.

▲ Flower power doesn’t have to be limited to your bouquet and the centrepieces. Floral displays can often be moved from the ceremony area and utilised later in your reception space. Moon gates, arches and hanging installations are all becoming styling must-haves thanks to their versatility.

▼ Consider how you’ll use the space available to you. Both layout and flow will affect the atmosphere of your big day. Are you going for a formal and traditional celebration with a threecourse wedding breakfast at round tables? Or is relaxed family-style dining with banqueting tables more your vibe? Perhaps you’d prefer to ditch the table plan completely and opt for a barbecue buffet where guests can mingle.

The clever use of lighting creates the perfect ambience for your day and can even change it from mellow and elegant during the day to celebratory in the evening. Use festoon lighting to enhance a festival or rustic vibe, and coloured uplighters in your wedding’s colour palette for a party atmosphere.

EXPERT ADVICE “Maintain a consistent colour palette and pay attention to details ensuring a flawless finish. For a simple open-plan tipi create a luxury feel using layers of foliage and flowers combined with candles and glassware to complement the crockery for a rich, opulent look. Place cards and menus add the finishing touches, while a welcome sign will set the scene for the day.” – Amanda Nelson, www.wachadoin.events ▲

Styling with oodles of gorgeous green foliage is still enjoying a moment in the sun. Think garlands, centrepieces, table runners, arches and hoops. Also, use it to highlight features of your venue such as a mantlepiece or staircase. ▼ Chill-out areas complete with comfy sofas, and even firepits if you’re outside, are great for guests who’d rather opt out of the the dancing and spend time catching up instead.

▲ Incorporating a sustainable angle into your big day is not only a trend but a growing necessity. That’s why dried flowers are making waves in the world of venue styling with super-cool pampas grass features making a fab backdrop for vows, speeches and photos.

o veil or not to veil? Gold or silver? Tiara or hair vine? These may well be the next batch of questions whizzing around your head once you’ve said “yes” to the dress. So, we talked to the region’s experts in all things bling to bring you the lowdown on completing your all-important look with flair.

I don’t want my face covered...

https://livi-edwards.com

www.pronovias.com

https://joyce-jackson.co.uk

“Don’t worry, you don’t have to. If you want a simple veil that comes from the back of your head, you’ll be looking for a single tier. These are an elegant option and sit beautifully in your hair. If you do decide to opt for added drama though, why not cover your face while walking down the aisle and pull it back when you arrive beside your intended? In this case you’ll need a two-tier veil with blusher. This is the shorter piece of tulle that covers the face. Once pulled back it offers more volume from behind for a timeless look.”

What lengths are available?

https://livi-edwards.com

“If your gown has a detailed or plunging back, a shorter veil will avoid blocking this highlight. A cathedral-length plain soft Italian tulle would also work perfectly here. If on the other hand, you’re wearing a simple silhouette, you may want to jazz it up with the veil. There are plenty of options here from lace and sparkle, to pearls and flowers. We love it when a bride asks for a bespoke veil to match her dress as the design process is so much fun. ”

54

What are the alternatives? “Capes and wings are a huge bridal trend and make an amazing statement. Ideal for a boho style, wings usually attach to the straps on the back of the dress and can be detached for two different looks. A cape also allows you to switch up your look. Again, they attach to the back or at the neck and come in lace or the same fabric as your dress.”

https://madison-james.com

What veil is right for my dress?

To know a veil

Who better to turn to for advice on choosing the right veil than a bridal boutique owner? Allow us to introduce the lovely Hanni Frankland of My Funny Valentine (https://mfvbridal.com) in Chester. She’s here to guide you through this potentially confusing minefield. www.pronovias.com

“The most common lengths from shortest to longest are: birdcage, waist, fingertip, chapel or train and cathedral. Alternatively, for dramatic impact look out for veils much longer than standard cathedral, which many designers do offer.”

Hanni Frankland of My Funny Valentine (https://mfvbridal.com) says, “We’d recommend waiting until you’ve found your dress before choosing your hair accessories. What you select will also depend on how you plan to wear your hair, so it’s a good idea to know which accessories will work with that particular do. “Look for something that best suits your bridal style, whether that be boho, romantic or total princess. Your choice will also depend on the height of your up do and whether you want the accessory to be easily removed or entwined like a hair vine. For example, a comb can be layered with the one attached to your veil and will sit neatly on top. Once you’re ready to remove the veil just pop the comb back in for some sparkle in the evening. Pins also work well as they’ll be scattered throughout your hair for a twinkly effect without affecting your veil.”

www.bluebugphotos.com

JEWELLERY AND ACCESSORIES

Cassie McClymont of Cassie M Bridal (www.cassiem.co.uk) says, “Where a chosen hair accessory will sit is a common concern. The typical place is directly onto the crown, but that’s not necessarily the best option with certain hairstyles. Why not try it over to one side instead? This will show off the full hair design and bring a little something different. If you really want to stand out with a modern take on the tiara, our bespoke pearl encrusted crown is a real showstopper. It suits both glossy flowing curls and the sleek bun beautifully.”

https://livi-edwards.com

“Statement headbands are popular and add the wow factor. Whether you want Swarovski crystals, pearls or elegant 3D flowers, headbands can transform a look and complement your dress.” – Hanni

“There’s no need to worry about wilting fresh flowers with our porcelain bloom and gold leaf pins.” – Cassie 55

Wedding rings aren’t just the most important piece of jewellery you’ll wear for your big day, but for the rest of your life. So, take your time to think about what you really want. Francesca offers some excellent advice: “Start by thinking about your style and budget. This is crucial as it’ll determine the type of ring that’s perfect for you. Once that’s decided, consider your metal preference – 18ct gold is used for its durability and this should be your choice for a delicate band. “Do you want to incorporate precious stones and does it need to fit around an engagement ring? These are the next two questions you should be asking yourself. I’d strongly consider how your ring looks when worn alone too as it’s often the case over the years that engagement rings are worn less, so make sure a shaped band still looks strong. “Finally, I’d recommend that you think about where and how your wedding bands are made. Are the materials sustainably and responsibly sourced? Where was it manufactured and is there full traceability?” 56

https://anuka-jewellery.com

https://anuka-jewellery.com

Francesca Kippax of Anuka Jewellery (https://anuka-jewellery.com) says, “Choosing key pieces of jewellery to bring your bridal look together is essential to get just right. Too much can throw off an outfit, whereas too little could leave it lacking that perfect touch. Different dress styles allow for different jewellery looks – let’s break it down: ❤ Bohemian. This floaty, relaxed silhouette works well with gold hues. I’d recommend looking at organic hoop earrings and dainty layered necklaces. ❤ Simple. Make a statement with eyecatching earrings, or pair it right back with simple studs and a delicate necklace. I love layering using a combination of studs, small ear crawlers and varying ear cuffs.

https://anuka-jewellery.com

https://anuka-jewellery.com

SPARKLE AND SHINE

Francesca demystifies the process of complementing your dress’ neckline... ❤ High. Stick only to a pair of earrings that complement the gown. ❤ Sweetheart, strapless or square. Keep it dainty with a 15-inch necklace that sits along your collarbone. Add a touch of sparkle or go for a coloured gemstone to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. ❤ V-neck. Layer it up or go for a single piece. You can afford to go longer in chain length here – a 16- or 18-inch necklace is ideal.

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

H

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

PRETTY AS A PICTURE Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

BRIDE’S DIARY

I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.

Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.

We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.

A room full of candles is a must!

For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row of diamonds that match my engagement ring.

I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for a very natural look.

Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.

No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.

This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 59

HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

DON’T FORGET!

Would you recommend sending out save-the-dates and why? We can’t decide if they’re necessary. In all honesty, I don’t always recommend save-the-date cards. But, don’t get me wrong, they are a fun way to set the scene and get the buzz going around your big day. I always advise sending them out at least a year in advance, and they’re especially important when you’re planning to get married around a significant date such as Christmas, New Year, or in the middle of a busy holiday period. Many people book their vacations a year in advance and you don’t want your nearest and dearest to miss your celebration. I also think they’re super-useful if you have a lot of guests travelling significant distances, as they’ll probably appreciate the heads up so they can book accommodation – hotels often offer better rates for early bookings. So, there are times when save-the-dates are a good idea, but you will need to consider your date and circumstances as they’re not always essential. My top tip? Make them work for you. Why not include a list of local accommodation to make planning their stay easier for your guests? Make them easy to display too, after all, they’re there to ensure people remember. Fridge magnets and stickers are fantastic ideas. Ling Warlow | Dragonfly Couture Stationery www.dragonflycouturestationery.com

A FAMILY AFFAIR

How can we include close friends and family members in our ceremony? There are several ways, so here are seven of my top tips to get you started: ❤ Have the youngest guests escort you down the aisle, perhaps scattering flower petals or handing out confetti packets to those on the end of rows. ❤ Buck tradition and get both your parents and/or siblings to walk down the aisle with you as you enter the ceremony space. ❤ Ask a confident friend or relative to read a poem or an extract from a favourite book or film. ❤ If you know someone who has a way with words, ask them to write something special for your day. ❤ If you’ve opted for a handfasting ceremony, have different friends or family members present each ribbon or piece of fabric. ❤ If you have a musically talented loved one, ask them to play or sing some meaningful music as you walk down the aisle or sign the register. ❤ Dancers add a dramatic element to any ceremony, and to be led on entry or exit by those who can weave magic with their bodies would definitely add that extra special touch to proceedings. Above all, have fun and make it your own. Sarah Nelson | Moments To www.momentsto.co.uk 60

EXPERT ADVICE RUSTIC CHIC

What floral centrepieces would best suit our rustic-themed wedding? For a rustic-themed wedding the go-to floral table centrepieces are jars of flowers placed atop log slices. This is a really versatile option that can easily be customised to complement your wedding’s colour palette. However, sometimes less if more and another option could be floating candles surrounded by greenery and minimal flowers. The pictured example features eucalyptus and a few roses – the smell was divine! Gemma Wakerley Booker Flowers & Gifts www.bookerflowersandgifts.co.uk

YOUR CHARIOT AWAITS

I’ve always dreamed of travelling to my wedding in a horse-drawn carriage. What do I need to know before booking one? Indeed, love and marriage go together like horse and carriage! Many have dreamt of the perfect wedding complete with the most romantic of arrivals. So, when looking to make these childhood fantasies a reality, there are several factors to consider. First, is the distance and time it will take to get to

your venue. Horses travel at seven miles per hour over a maximum distance of eight miles. If you’re only going a short way, enquire about additional journeys for bridesmaids, mother-of-the-bride, mother-of-thegroom etc and explore the ways you can make the day uniquely yours. The British weather likes to keep us all guessing, so it really is essential to choose a carriage with a fitted hood. You’ll also want to select a company that fully dresses their vehicles and offers to elegantly tie this in with your colour palette at no extra charge. It’s so important too to choose a supplier who’s passionate about the welfare, care and training of the horses, with a commitment to excellence, a friendly nature and attention to detail. Look for recommendations or ask on wedding-related social media groups. Sarah Ashford | Ashcroft Carriages www.ashcroftcarriages.co.uk 61

Q&A Look your big-day best with advice from our professionals

BEST OF BOTH

I’m planning an outdoor boho wedding. How should I wear my hair to suit my free-spirited look? Cassie says: There’s certainly a real interest in romantically styled boho bridal hair this summer. And if you don’t want to wear your hair completely down, a half up/half down hairstyle is the ideal fit for this wedding theme. Pair this look with a beautifully bohemian hair vine, which are becoming a favourite with 2021 brides. These fit in perfectly with the relaxed, romantic feel while rocking the boho look.

IT’S HIGH SHINE

My dress has a high neckline with lots of lace. How would you suggest I wear my hair to complement it? Rebecca says: I’d recommend something smooth and chic such as a low or high bun – depending on what suits you best. Make the most of the high neck by showing it off. Keep textured hair to a minimum as the lace will bring that element for you, so your hair would look perfect with a silky and shiny finish.

BE PREPARED

We’re planning a summer wedding, and I’m concerned the heat will wreak havoc with my make-up. What can you suggest? Julie says: Oh the great British summer! It’s all down to three things: preparation, application and having back-ups to hand on the day. The first step is to ensure your moisturiser is fully absorbed before applying a good quality mattifying primer. Then, following the base application, apply loose or pressed powder to eyelids and T-zone. I’d recommend using a velour puff rather than a brush for the best finish. Adopt a press and roll application technique especially across the forehead, down the sides of the nose and across the upper lip line and chin. Finish with a mattifying setting spray and don’t forget to ask a member of your bride tribe to keep some powder and blotting papers in their handbag for you.

POLISH PERFECTION

Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.

SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk

HAIR REPAIR

If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 81

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley

A

nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 82

Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry

strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair

BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrient-dense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution

to haircare. The integrity of a product and what hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients.

❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-ordeath situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 83

The darling buds

fo May

Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade IIlisted Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dog-friendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.

STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy village-green

views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort, amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.

EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with

guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.

EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morris-designed stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a wellearned pint makes it all worth it.

BOOK IT: Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis. Visit www.thealicehawthorn.com 88
