-day is imminent! As the County Wedding Magazines editorial crew prepare to see our beloved senior editor, Melissa, become a Mrs, we can’t help but be niggled by at least a small sense of shock at just how quickly the big day has come around. Something, I’ve no doubt you’re all experiencing too as your own weddings draw closer. Christmas Day 2020 feels like only yesterday, when my fellow bridesmaid, Olivia, and I bombarded Melissa with WhatsApp messages: “Has he done it yet? Has he done it yet?” We knew the proposal was imminent you see, and were more than just a tad excited! Boy, have we had an adventure together since: the tears of joy at being asked to be bridesmaids (“Are you sure you want me?”), the fun of shopping for the dresses, and the hilarity of the hen dos (yes plural, she deserves it). The past year-and-a-half has seen us grow closer as friends, not just Melissa, Olivia and I – the three amigos; but also with our gorgeous fellow bridesmaid Nolwenn and the groom, dear Dave. Weddings have a habit of doing that don’t they? Of course, they’re a celebration of love between the all-important couple, but more than that, they allow a much wider expression of love for friends, family and even fur-babies! After all, that’s why we’re all here isn’t it? I know it’s why I spend my days writing about your amazing big days and why I never tire of looking at the resulting photographs. To quote a hero of mine, RuPaul: “Everybody say love.” I hope you enjoy the oodles of inspiration this issue has to offer. We’ve got a breathtaking styled shoot packed with ideas from the region’s finest wedding suppliers, as well as three incredible real weddings. Plus, there’s plenty of guidance on hand if you’re starting out on your wedding journey in our Planning SOS feature (page 49), and we’ve honed in on venue styling from page 59. So, dive in, notebook and pen at the ready. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

MY LITTLE PONY Cheshire Pony Parties has created a new service to add to its repertoire: wedding ponies. Owner Amanda Keech tells us, “I was approached by a London-based wedding planner to provide a pony to carry the bubbly at a wedding hosted at a prestigious venue in Cheshire. It inspired me to put my 14 years of experience in delivering professionally organised, high end, engaging pony and unicorn parties with the wow factor, to create a new service for weddings.” The gorgeous wedding ponies will be available to cover Cheshire and occasionally, surrounding counties, carrying either champagne for the newlyweds, while you’re having your photos taken and/or confetti for your guests to throw. These little treasures offer an adorable extra to a country wedding or for a horse-loving couple. Amanda continues, “I wanted the ponies to have a simple country look, so was delighted to find some gorgeous tiny wicker baskets, just big enough to carry a bottle.” Cuteness overload! THE RISE OF THE SPARKLING SOLITAIRE What do Kourtney Kardasian, Hayley Bieber and Britney Spears all have in common aside from masses of Instagram followers? Each one of these stars has been spotted sporting solitaire diamond engagement rings. The style, which has doubled in sales at ROX over the past 12 months, is a popular choice as the style shows the diamond to its full potential, throwing light into it for superior sparkle. So, whether you’re looking to replace a temporary engagement ring or you’d like to congratulate yourself for being bang on trend, you may want to take note! The term “oval solitaire engagement ring” has seen a 50 per cent increase in searches over the last year. Like Kourtney Kardashian’s swoon-worthy piece, the ROX Honour Oval Cut Diamond Ring in platinum (from £2,295) will also make a showstopping statement. ROX Love Brilliant Cut Diamond Ring (from £2,750) set in platinum with 14 brilliant cut diamonds on each shoulder is the ideal choice for those who like to stand out from the crowd. More women are opting for yellow gold bands with a white diamond. While these have a vintage feel, you only have to look at the likes of Emily Ratajkowski and Megan Markle to know that gold has timeless appeal. Check out ROX’s Honour Oval Solitaire Diamond Ring in yellow gold (from £2,060). Princess Eugenie, Jennifer Lopez had Victoria Beckham have all worn dazzling pink-stoned engagement rings and ROX Honour Pink Sapphire Diamond Ring in platinum (£17,995) is the perfect choice for an ultra-feminine bride who likes to buck tradition. You can find your nearest ROX showroom on St Peter’s Lane in Liverpool. Check out www.rox.co.uk

Blue & Sixpence is an award-winning bridal boutique located in Liverpool offering professional, kind, friendly advice and gorgeous wedding gowns at fantastic prices. The idea behind this innovative store was born from experience. Owner Ali Hamilton says, “We wanted fabulous service, choice, style, fit and price, but just couldn’t find it.” On average, a gown takes 9,000 litres of water to make, consumes vast amounts of raw materials and resources before being shipped halfway around the world. “We knew we could do better,” Ali continues. Therefore, all the gowns stocked by Blue & Sixpence are new designer samples, meaning you save at least 50% compared to buying made-to-order. The team also helps recent brides to sell their own gowns and boasts an impressive stock of stunning preloved dresses. Interest-free payment plans are now available, making the gowns even more affordable and sizes 8 to 32 are in stock, so whatever your shape, size, style or budget you can enjoy the relaxed and private bridal experience here. We’ve partnered with Blue & Sixpence to offer a 10% discount off all gowns and accessories including discount stock throughout July and August (offer excludes commission gowns). REAL WEDDINGS
P
abs and Adam met online, deciding to go on a date shortly afterwards. They talked for hours over cocktails and, Pabs says, “There was an instant connection between us. We both felt like we’d known each other for a long time.” Pabs hadn’t been home to Sri Lanka for five years, so the couple planned a trip so she could introduce Adam to her parents. “I was really excited for him to meet them and to show him my country... I never expected him to propose!” she tells us. They booked a hotel in Kandy, Pabs’ home city, overlooking the mountains. Then after her birthday dinner he popped the question. It was incredibly special to Pabs that he’d chosen the city she grew up in as the setting for such an important moment. The pair considered tying the knot in Sri Lanka, but with Covid they decided it wouldn’t be viable. So, if they were going to say “I do” in the UK, they wanted it to be somewhere traditionally English. Pabs remembers, “When we visited Knowsley Hall, we were mesmerised by the grounds as well as how elegant and beautiful the interiors were. When I saw the ceremony room, I could instantly imagine myself walking down the aisle there.” Join us, as Pabs tells us more about their elegant and timeless big day – 30th April, 2022...
SETTING THE SCENE Pabs had a timeless, classic styling vision for the day. “I designed everything based on the idea that when we look back on our pictures in 20 or 30 years time, the theme and decorations will still look relevant,” she explains. Pabs was careful to strike a balance and avoid overdecorating, since Knowsley Hall is already so grand, and selected a palette of light pink, ivory and cream. With the help of venue stylist Thornton Events, the aisle was lined with white blossom trees and candles. Centrepieces for some of the eight tables were tall glass vases filled with pink, white and cream blooms, while others were adorned with blossom trees hung with baubles containing pink flowers. The same colours and blooms featured in the bride’s bouquet of roses and peonies. The wedding invitations displayed a gorgeous image of Knowsley Hall along with a white pearl button and golden ribbons. The same design was carried throughout the onthe-day stationery from the table plan to the guest book. The icing of the three-tier cake echoed the lace pattern from the bride’s wedding dress, as well as sugar-flower replicas of the blooms from her bouquet. Cake maker Suzie also created handmade heart-shaped cookies with the couples initials on, which served as wedding favours. Plus, there were even more treats on offer for the lucky guests in the shape of a sweet cart. The couple hired a white 1930s classic tourer car to get them from A to B. Pab remembers, “It was perfectly aligned with our theme and looks great in the pictures on Knowsley Hall’s long drive against the grand front gates.” Everyone was well and truly entertained in the evening with a DJ and selfie mirror booth.

REAL WEDDINGS LOOKING THE PART Pabs wore a made-to-measure Suzanne Neville gown, Rowana, with sleeves added to give it a more classic look. The veil was the same length as the dress’ train and boasted a delicate shimmer. The bride’s Jimmy Choos were chosen to echo this touch of sparkle. In the evening, the bride changed into a traditional Sri Lankan Kandyan saree to pay homage to her heritage. “It was special to wear that and take pictures with my family,” she recalls. Adam wore a navy Hugo Boss suit with a grey waistcoat. His groomsmen were also dressed in navy, including the waistcoasts, which allowed the groom to stand out. The bridesmaids’ dresses were blush pink to match the flowers in Pabs’ bouquet.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS Pabs’ parents live in Sri Lanka and had made the journey across land and sea especially for the big day – it was actually their first visit to the UK. “My mum couldn’t come with me when I went to try on the dress, so the day of the wedding was the first time she and my father had seen me in it. It was a truly special moment with tears of joy,” the bride shares. Pabs tells us about another of the day’s highlights: “I’ll never forget the way Adam looked at me as I walked down the aisle. I felt truly happy to see him at the end waiting for me.” When the registrar met the couple before the ceremony, she spent a lot of time carefully making sure she knew how to pronounce Pabs’ full Sri Lankan name. However, when the time came it wasn’t Pabudu’s name that caused the problem, but Adam’s! “She accidentally called him by his middle name. Once the mistake had been made it stuck in her head and got repeated a number of times. The guests all thought it was hilarious and Adam’s friends now have a new nickname for him,” the bride laughs. The newlyweds have nothing but great things to say about their wedding suppliers: “I feel everyone did such an amazing job. They were all equally brilliant! They worked together very well and made our lives easy. The Knowsley team were exceptional. The whole day ran smoothly and they went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed the day. Everything was perfect for our guests too. Our photographer Matthew captured all of those special moments so beautifully, and we’ll cherish the photos forever.”
“Picking suppliers who’ve worked with the venue before is a huge advantage. Everyone I used knew the people and processes at Knowsley Hall so it made things so much easier.” 29

REAL WEDDINGS
Very vintage Emma and Joe styled their relaxed and informal wedding day in a palette of pink, cream and gold, with a nod to the fabulous 1950s Images courtesy of Danielle Flynn Wedding Photography
W
hen Emma went to see a friend’s band play at the Matthew Street Festival in Liverpool, she never imagined she’d meet the love of her life. She got chatting to bass-player Joe after the gig and they headed into town together. He fell in love with her confidence right away, and had enjoyed watching her having such a great time at the show. Although initially attracted to the musician, Emma found herself seeing beyond that as the evening wore on, falling for Joe’s intelligence, love of animals and mutual interest in music, film and travel. Plus, she says, “We’d both been in prior relationships where our partners had sadly passed away, so we had this in common too.” After nine happy years together, Emma and Joe started discussing the possibility of marriage. “It seemed like the next logical thing to do!
Getting married was the last thing on the to-do list. Getting a dog, and becoming parents as well as homeowners had already been ticked off,” Emma explains. Apparently, Emma loves a good staircase, and the one at The Racquet Club is so showstopping that it was enough to seal the deal when it came to choosing the wedding venue. The location also more than fitted the bill when other must-haves were ticked of the list: history, a great exterior and nothing too modern! “The staff couldn’t have been more accommodating when answering our questions, so we went ahead and paid the deposit,” Emma remembers. Read on as the bride tells us more about 25th September, 2021 – W-day... 33
I wore a backless tea-length dress by White Rose Bridal. I always wanted a dress I could easily dance in, so a short one was the only option for me. My hair was up in victory rolls – very 1950s in style to complement the vintage theme.
I felt absolutely fine all morning while getting dressed, but the nerves finally kicked in about an hour before the ceremony. Joe meanwhile, was calm as a cucumber the whole day.

The bridesmaids were given a brief: soft, autumnal colours. They both have very different body shapes, so I didn’t want either of them to wear anything they were uncomfortable in. I wasn’t even too fussed if they were matching, but they did end up finding and liking the same dress.

We’d already been together for a while, so I suppose ours was quite an informal day. After a difficult couple of years with Covid we just wanted everyone to have a good day and hold a great party.
My tip would be to make sure you keep in contact with your suppliers. And, while easier said than done, do your best to relax. Your suppliers are in business for a reason and they love what they do. They want to see your big day go according to plan as much as you do!

REAL WEDDINGS
Pretty IN PINK Melissa and Josh tied the knot at Nunsmere Hall on 16th April, 2022 Images courtesy of Terri Pashley Photography
J
osh asked Melissa to marry him in the Oblix Restaurant at the Shangri La The Shard having whisked her away to London for a surprise weekend. After a day of sightseeing, food and drink, the day ended with a glorious meal at this fancy eatery and Josh asked the all-important question. The couple chose Nunsmere Hall to host their wedding day. Melissa says, “It was a perfect manor house with stunning marquee and gorgeous grounds. Straight away we could imagine our family and friends enjoying the day there.” Read on as Melissa tells us more.
39
The moment I saw Josh at the end of the aisle, the excitement kicked in and the rest of the day was filled with so much laughter and happiness.
I wore Torrance by Martin Thornburg. I saw a picture of it on Instagram and instantly fell in love with it. I found it at Bethany Hannah Bridal and tried it on along with some others to make sure I wasn’t rushing in, but nothing else compared. I chose a short veil so that it wouldn’t hide the dress’ beautiful train.
Josh wore a black tuxedo as did his best men and usher.
“I felt quite strange in the morning! I just couldn’t believe the day was finally here and I was actually going to be a bride.”
Josh got rather emotional when he saw me walking down the aisle towards him.
During the ceremony Josh put my wedding ring on the wrong finger and I had to correct him! Then, when asked if anyone had any objections, our niece, aged one, decided this was the perfect moment to shout out, filling the room with laughter!
40
My bridesmaids were dressed in pink, one-shoulder dresses with diamanté belts.
REAL WEDDINGS
We were lucky enough to have amazing weather, so everyone could be out on the terrace enjoying the sun, drinks and food – just what we wanted. Our venue styling featured a pink and white palette with plenty of florals.
We knew our suppliers were going to be amazing, but couldn’t believe how above and beyond they went to make sure it was the best and most memorable day of our lives. We couldn’t recommend them all enough.
We had the most amazing singer, Abbie Hanlon, to entertain our guests througout the day. She started with a chilled mixture of songs for the drinks reception, followed by some upbeat songs after the first dance to get the night started. Everyone commented on how great she was – such an incredible singer and a lovely girl to have around on the day.
While you want to see everyone you’ve invited, don’t over do it trying to make that happen. Spend the day with the people who make you happiest and make sure you see each other as much as possible. 41

LOCAL SHOOT
The make-up design offers an elegant yet natural look, while the hair is pinned at the back for a traditional feel, but loosely shaped around the face for overall softness. In the bouquet we opted for tulips, roses and frilly lisianthus for the base, complemented by delicately scented ginster blossoms and foliage.
The arch and table décor also featured orange ranunculus to create a naturally wild meadow look.

WEDDING PLANNING
PLANNING SOS Local suppliers from various specialisms share words of wisdom to get your planning off on the right foot
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
We’re engaged! Now what? There’s so much racing around the mind when planning your wedding, but the best thing you can do is start by looking for a venue. The place where you decide to get married is very much an extension of your personality, so it needs to be just right. This can take some time, but enjoy looking around the beautiful country houses, and function areas. Do some research on alternative weddings too, there are lots of options for outdoor weddings now. How many wedding guests can you have in the tipis and domes? The possibilities are endless really! Tipis can be linked infinitely, so realistically you can have as many guests as you wish. They can also be linked into different shapes, so you can have them in a line, in a triangle, a diamond, or even a doughnut! How can we make our big day totally us? Think about everything around you in your life, such as the music you like and your fashion sense. Think about how you met and the things you enjoy together, most importantly think about the things you love about each other and reflect this in your wedding day.

HANNAH MAY CALIGARI, EVENT IN A TENT www.event-in-a-tent.co.uk
What’s your top planning tip? Check everything twice, three times and even four times! Sometimes the little things get missed out, and they can turn into big things along the way. Invest in a pretty notebook or wedding planner book, this will help you so much as you can keep track and tick things off as you go. It never fails to get you into the spirit and beauty of planning your wedding. 49
LET PLANNING COMMENCE! CLARA MURRAY, NELSON HOTELS https://nelsonhotels.co.uk We’re engaged! Now what? Relax, there’s no rush. The wedding market is overflowing with options, and you need to look around to find what’s best for you. Make some appointments at a variety of venues, even ones you’re not sure about. They can be so different in person and there’s no amount of Googling that can account for the feel you get for a space and location. You may end up celebrating somewhere you hadn’t even considered when you started out. What’s the one question you most commonly get asked and how do you respond? “What would you do?” I get this a lot and my answer is always, “It’s your big day, it’s about what the two of you want.” Throw out the perfectwedding rulebook and work with your team to make your big day unique to you. Don’t worry about making your day the most on trend, or about pleasing everyone else.
WORDS OF WISDOM JENNIFER WALKER, JW CEREMONIES https://jwceremonies.com We don’t want our ceremony to be the boring part of the day that everyone has to sit through in order to get to the party! How can we make it as fun-filled as the rest of the day to reflect our personalities? Your ceremony should be the heart of the day, not the snoozefest formalities before the party can start! It will set the tone for the rest of the day, so it’s important to get it right. If you opt for a celebrant-led ceremony, they’ll get to know you and your love story, and be able to make suggestions that will be a good fit for you and your family. Not all celebrants have like-for-like services though, so arrange consultations with a few to see who you like and click with. If you’re having registrar-led “I dos,” you can opt to design the ceremony yourself. But this can be a daunting task and anything you write will need to be vetted by the registrar’s office and could be rejected if any wording or music choices are deemed unsuitable. I do however, offer consultation services to help you with the process if this the route you wish to take. A ceremony full of laughter, insights into your relationship and heartfelt moments that keep your guests engaged is a fabulous way of keeping all those happy feels flowing. Having a friend or officiant read light-hearted readings and poems, messages of love, or marriage advice from your congregation are all great ways of adding personality to this, the most important part of the day.
50
How can we make our big day totally us? Your food and beverage choices are the recipe for success if you want to show off your personalities. Perhaps you both have a favourite dish or drink you can’t wait to share with your guests? If your tastes differ, how about a his and hers cocktail duo behind the bar? Forget tradition and bring your own loves to the occasion! We’ve had tea-mad couples swapping fizz for speciality cuppas as their welcome drink. And if cake isn’t your style, why not choose a tower of doughnuts, cheeses or macarons? Finally, why not get your beloved pet involved? Our venue is dogfriendly, making us a great option if you can’t imagine your celebrations without your fur baby. The opportunities to make your day truly yours are practically endless. What’s your top planning tip? List, lists, lists. We all know that wedding planning can easily overwhelm – who’s coming? Who’s wearing what? What needs to be done by when? Is anyone allergic to anything? You can prevent these questions and more like it keeping you up at night by breaking everything down into manageable chunks. Nothing is as satisfying as ticking off jobs on your to-do list. Take it from someone who has a multitude of weddings to plan at once, your lists will keep you sane!

WORDS OF WISDOM KEVIN BROWN, KEVIN BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY www.kevinbrownphotography.co.uk
www.kevinbrownphotography.co.uk
Some photographers offer an engagement or pre-wedding shoot, but we’re camera shy and don’t know if it’s for us. What are the benefits? With around 500 weddings photographed we’ve lost count of the times people have said, “We’re not really that comfortable in front of the camera.” Carole and I have always included a short shoot in our pre-wedding meetings were possible. It’s is a great way to get used to being more at ease in front of the camera, as well as running through the plans for the wedding day. Occasionally, if we haven’t worked at a venue before we’ll meet there where possible – we only need half-an-hour or so. We’ve been doing this long enough to make our couples feel completely at ease, even if we haven’t met up with them until the wedding, although that’s rare. But our newlyweds always tell us that they felt so much more comfortable on the big day because of the pre-wedding shoot. We also ask them to choose a few images from it that we make into a set of table cards including a password and link to the online gallery for the wedding images.
What if I’ve lost weight by the time wedding dress arrives? The process for ordering means we measure you and then your dress goes into production and arrives approximately six months later. It will be a very close fit to the measurements we took at the time of you visiting, but if you’ve lost or gained weight slightly, fear not! This is where the seamstress comes in and works her magic. We won’t let you leave looking less than 100 per cent perfect and ready for your big day. Dresses can be taken in and let out slightly. They always need a slight tweak anyway, generally to get the length right, which is why we have fittings so you don’t need to worry. How can we make our big day totally us? By remembering one rule... your day, your way! Speak to your suppliers and share your vision for the big day. We’re full of ideas if you need help, but it’s our job to listen too. Maybe even screenshot ideas from magazines, social media pages and so on. When it comes to your wedding dress, once you’ve found the one we can look at accessories – do you want a veil or blooms in your hair? Hair, make-up, flowers, adding a sash or belt – it’s all personal choice. Every bride is different, so the look you’ve chosen will be special to you. What’s your top planning tip? You’ll need your bridal shoes for your fitting. This is so that the length when wearing your shoes is perfect!

We’re engaged! Now what? Now you can start your research – read magazines, visit wedding fairs and get a feel for the theme you want for your wedding. The venue is always the first place to start. Once you’ve decided on that, you can discuss with them available dates and once set, you can start planning the rest of your big day. Your venue will generally recommend suppliers for you to look at, however it’s best to research all avenues. Once you have a few suppliers in mind, visit their websites and social media pages to get a feel for who they are and what they do. Look at reviews too and trust your gut.
53
SARAH BOALCH, NORTH WALES CELEBRANT www.northwalescelebrant.co.uk We’re engaged! Now what? Sit back and reflect on where your journey has brought you and raise a glass (or two) to the amazing adventures that lie ahead for you both. By reflecting on your story so far, you’ll find it easier to highlight what makes you… you. This will make planning your big day so much easier as it will more than likely reveal your wedding style. If a celebrant conducts our ceremony, will we be legally married? Most couples don’t realise it’s the paperwork that makes a marriage legal, not the ceremony itself. Couples I work with carry out the formalities at their local registry office with two witnesses, which takes 10 minutes and costs around £60. This then opens up a whole world of freedom to you. By simply separating the legalities the ceremony can now include anything and be held anywhere, even outdoors. Not only that, but it can be 100 per cent tailored around you, your personalities, your story, and your hopes for the future – a real celebration of your unique relationship. How can we make our big day totally us? In the weeks running up to your wedding we’ll get to know each other better and I’ll ask all sorts of questions about key points in your relationship. This will help me to create a ceremony that really reflects you both and tells your story. What could be more you than that? What’s your top planning tip? Be true to you. As soon as a couple gets engaged, they’re often bombarded by well-meaning family members and friends making suggestions for W-day. So much so, you may eventually find yourself thinking things like, “Nan wouldn’t approve of that.” But remember, it’s your big day so the most important thing is that you love it. Thank them for their advice of course, but you do you and stick to your guns. 54
We’re engaged! Now what? For memories to treasure forever take some time to discuss what’s important to you both and incorporate some heartfelt, personal touches into your festivities. Getting started early means you get all the best suppliers to make your dreams come true, so it’s best to be organised. Take things one step at a time and prioritise all your wishes so you spend your money on the things that are most important first. If you love music, book the musicians or DJ first. Consider what you’re willing to compromise on, this will help you stay within budget. Also, let one supplier lead you to another – your florist might recommend a venue stylist or vice versa. I know nothing about flowers. Where do I start? How will I pick my flowers when I don’t know their names? Most couples will have an idea of the colours and ambience they wish to create, but perhaps not the flower names and that’s ok. That’s why having a floral expert on your team makes life easier. They’ll guide you and show you what’s available in any given season. After all, your wedding florals are so much more than bunches of flowers, they’re the fragrant focal point of your venue styling; a source of scent that will evoke memories of your big day for years to come; a symbolic accessory enriched with personal significance. How can we make our big day totally us? You’re the secret ingredient so be authentic and weave your personality into your day. Start by identifying your style –is it rustic chic or classic elegant? Look to your passions and loves in life for inspiration. What’s your favourite colour, do you love spontaneous, playful, bold splashes of colour or do you prefer timeless neutrals reminiscent of dreamlike frothy textural florals you would see in a Jane Austen film? What’s your passion or hobby in your spare time? What’s your top planning tip? Don’t be afraid to ask. Your chosen suppliers are your go-to, most-trusted experts during the planning process. When working with them, you should feel comfortable having honest conversations about what you really want. Their job will be to tell you what’s possible. Remember: planning your wedding should be fun. So, celebrate as many of your planning events as you can – go for lunch and have a glass of fizz or two after your dress fitting or meeting your suppliers. alexandrawilsonphoto.wixsite.com

A THEME
come true
The ultimate guide to styling your venue
oin us for a stroll through the wonderful world of wedding venue styling. It’s all too easy to get carried away, but when a simple idea is executed to perfection... well, that’s when you have a theme come true!
CHOOSING A THEME Settling on a theme can be a tricky business, so the best way forward might be to consider your personalities and common ground. Lauren Marnell at R’marnies Weddings & Events says, “For a truly personal wedding, look at what you both like, what you’ve dreamed of, what you enjoy and what makes you smile, as well as your life experiences, and places and people important to you.” Whatever theme you opt for, it’s a way to communicate your own love story and ensure your big day is as unique as the two of you. Regardless of what you have in mind, the best place to start is by having a chat with your venue stylist, recommends Amanda Nelson of Wachadoin Events. She tells us, “Your venue stylist can help you keep things viable whatever you go for, whether it’s something current such as rustic or botanical themes; traditional, classic design; or something completely different. You’ll need to decide how far you want to take the idea – it could be as simple as using a table plan and name cards to add in a hint of the theme, or you can go all out and decorate the whole venue. From pirates to motor racing or Disney and beyond anything can work, but you need to maintain a good balance between the theme and how you want your day to look and feel.”
PICK A PALETTE One of the keys to settling on the perfect palette for your big day is the time of year. Different seasons will naturally lend themselves to different colours. During the spring or summer for example, many opt for pretty pastels such as the oh-so on trend blush pink and sage. Autumn and winter on the other hand bring out the gorgeous rich jewel tones such as burgundy or emerald green, or seasonal hues of frosty white, blue and silver. Don’t fret though, as Katie Lloyd at Maddison J Creations says, “You’ll know what you’re drawn to the most when it comes to colour and style. Don’t be afraid to be different, you don’t have to stick to the trends – this is your day. There are many different ways to add pops of colour throughout the styling, which is why we think it’s so important to meet with your stylist at your venue.” Wachadoin Events

THE VENUE SPEAKS VOLUMES It doesn’t pay to ignore your setting when it comes to the styling, not only when picking a theme and palette, but practicality too is crucial. In fact, it’s so important that Katie advises you to choose your venue before you set your heart on anything else. She says, “Some are light and airy, others can be dark and historical. Settling on where you’ll marry first, gives you a starting point for your theme. Most will have an image gallery of previous weddings on their website to help inspire you.” So, to the aforementioned practicalities. We recommend you ask your venue team as many questions as possible and ask for a meeting with 58
VENUE STYLING VENUE STYLING DOS AND DON’TS ...according to Katie at Maddison J Creations THE DOS ❤ Make sure your venue stylist is insured and has relevant up-to-date public liability. ❤ Take along as many ideas as possible when you meet with your venue stylist. The more examples you can show, the more your stylist will understand what you want. Mood boards are great for this. ❤ Have an input, even if you feel overwhelmed at the thought of designing your wedding. This is your day and your decor should reflect your personalities. Your venue stylist will work with you and apply their expert knowledge and advice. ❤ To guide your budget planning, break your styling down into sections – ceremony, venue and wedding breakfast. Remember your ceremony is less than 30 minutes, guests will be in your main wedding breakfast room for most of the day.
Maddison J Creations
THE DON’TS ❤ Don’t hire two venue stylists as their work could clash and fail to create a uniformed appearance. ❤ If your venue has strong colours don’t fight them. Go with the flow and chose hues that complement the surroundings.
Maddison J Creations
“Incorporate your bridal bouquets into your top table décor. Ask your venue stylist to leave out vases with fresh water to give them a place to sit and save them wilting throughout the day.” – Katie Lloyd, Maddison J Creations LOOKING AFTER THE PENNIES We’d always recommend that you sit down together and agree on a budget at the very start of your journey to W-day. Deciding how much you want to devote to the venue styling will be an important part of that, not least because it’s an area in which you can all too easily get swept away. “Look at affordability, look at what you want and be prepared to be open minded to small changes that could make a difference to your budget, but not to your vision,” Lauren advises. Katie says, “Be realistic with what you want to spend, there are lots of companies who caterer for all different budgets. Most will provide a detailed quote allowing you to decide on your must-haves. After all, everyone will see the venue styling as soon as they walk in, it makes an impact, so if it’s important to you, allocate the budget.” Research local venue stylists carefully and you’re sure to find the right one who’ll help you work out a budget and will be happy to operate within it. For example, the team of specialists at R’marnies work with their couples to do just that. Lauren explains, “We make the effort to provide the perfect day within the allocated allowance, tailoring our bespoke packages to suit. We want all our couples to be happy and stress free so we find exchanging ideas, creating options and providing a great service for a fair price is the surest way to ensure a fabulous occasion.”

your venue stylist to guide you. You’ll need to know about things such as ceiling height, which will affect your centrepieces; what chairs are available; how much time to you get to set up; and whether you/your stylist can attach anything to beams, ceiling and/or walls. Another key question to ask is whether the venue team will transfer your ceremony décor to the reception, as reusing these elements in both parts of the day is a sure fire way to save money and to make sure everything is cohesive. Lauren says, “Dress your ceremony aisle well as it sets the tone. Careful planning here means you can transfer some of your décor to create stunning centrepieces and other items can be placed around the venue. If you’re having a church ceremony and then going on to a venue, giving the church props a minimalist vibe will make them easier to transfer. With lanterns and candles, a couple of blossom trees and pew bows you’ll have a beautiful romantic ceremony with easy-to-move elements that are kind on the budget.”

Fashion Q&A
Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals YOU’RE TIMELESS TO ME
I don’t want to look back on my photos and have any regrets about my outfit. How can I ensure my look is timeless? Ali says: Go with what suits you, not what’s on trend. As a trend is exactly that, something of the moment. How many times have you looked back on photos and thought, “Oh my goodness, what was I thinking?” So, consider how your wedding ensemble will look when it’s all together, as well as how it will look at your venue, since it’ll never be photographed or videoed in isolation. If you absolutely must have the season’s key look though, choose one and incorporate it into your attire. Love a bishop sleeve? Maybe add detachable ones so you can change up your look from day to evening and make sure you get photos and videos of both. Our advice: Keep the bang-on-trend look for your hen do, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner or other pre-wedding event and opt for something that will date less quickly for your big day. It’s the best of both worlds.
MAKE IT POP Although I still love it, I’m now a bit worried that my simple wedding dress might be a bit too plain for our colourful and fun wedding day. Is there anything I can add to it for a bit more oomph? Hanni says: Simple dresses are the perfect backdrop for colourful weddings as they offer a blank canvas, so please don’t worry. You can easily dress up and personalise a simple dress with various accessories. Firstly, think about your flowers. A large and brightly coloured bouquet can often be enough to add that extra wow factor to a simple silhouette. If florals are your thing, you can always look at adding something super-fun like a showstopping flower crown. Another great way to give something simple more oomph is by choosing statement hair accessories and jewellery pieces. Ornate headbands or statement jewellery are great options when it comes to personalising your look, and they’re things you can use again in the future. We also love a long statement veil for a fabulous dramatic effect. This can transform your gown by giving you various ways to switch it up throughout the day. Finally, if you’re brave enough, adding a brightly coloured bridal shoe for that pop of colour also works well and creates a perfect photo opportunity.
LOVELY IN LACE I adore lace and want a gown that shows it off. Can you suggest what I should be looking for in order to keep the look modern? Heather says: There are so many different types of lace to choose from that it can be confusing! From delicate chantilly lace to big appliquéd, embroidered lace, it can be hard to know what suits your style. My best advice would be to research online before your appointment. Get familiar with the different types and what might fit your wedding theme. Eyelet lace has a boho vibe, with small holes and geometric patterns. It’s a good option if you’re looking for something modern with a vintage feel. Embroidered lace often comes in large appliqués focusing on
flowers and leafy patterns. These look great on any dress whether it be A-line or slim fitting. They also work beautifully with a warm colour beneath to make them stand out, such as blush or champagne. Even within different types of lace there are hundreds of variations to choose from, such as sparkly, beaded, silver or even 3D. Another way to keep the look modern with this material is not to use it all over. Try a plain mikado skirt with a lace bodice or a cut-out lace train or extension. You could also wear a lace veil over a plain dress.

From Miss to Mrs County Wedding Magazines’ senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey t’s finally here, my last bride’s diary entry before I become a married woman! When we first got engaged nearly 18 months ago, the wedding seemed so far away that it almost didn’t feel real, and yet here we are about to walk down the aisle. The last few weeks of planning have been a bit manic with all of our suppliers getting in touch asking for lastminute details, and although it can feel a little overwhelming, it’s also really exciting! This issue is all about my dress alterations, hair and make-up trial and keeping positive as the big day approaches...
FITS LIKE A GLOVE I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t incredibly nervous for my first dress fitting. I purchased my gown over a year ago, and I’ve gone through phases during that time where I’ve loved it and also doubted it. It was a size too big when I bought it, so looking back at the pictures it was hard to imagine what it would look like fitting properly. I think my main worry was ‘what if it doesn’t look like I imagined or even worse, what if the seamstress makes it too small or too short!?’ As someone who likes to micromanage everything, this situation was certainly out of my comfort zone. I took two of my bridesmaids with me for my first appointment for moral support, and the seamstress, Danielle, was wonderful. She made us feel really at ease and like nothing was too much trouble. She knew right away how to alter my dress and was able to do it within a quick timeframe. I left the appointment feeling much calmer but also a little apprehensive about how the dress would eventually turn out. Fast forward a month, it was time for my second fitting and for the bridesmaids’ dresses to be altered. After a morning of panicking and worrying, I can’t put into words how relieved I felt when I tried on my dress and it fit like a glove. It still needed a few tweaks here and there, but overall I felt much happier as I was no longer drowning in a sea of fabric and worrying that my boobs might fall out at a moment’s notice! Danielle was also very reassuring to the bridesmaids who were worried about parts of their dresses and, within a week, we had all three back looking perfect. Having had several meltdowns over this, my advice to any nearlyweds-to-be is to try not to panic and trust your suppliers. As long as they have good reviews and are confident in their capabilities, then leave it to them – they’re the experts after all! 80
FACING FACTS As someone who has only worn make-up once for prom night many years ago, I was unsure of what I wanted when it came to my bridal make-up. Make-up is not my forte and, much to my friends’ amusement, I can’t tell you the difference between highlighter, foundation and concealer – and that’s just for starters! For this reason, I chose a hair stylist and make-up artist with great reviews, who are familiar with my venue and whole-heartedly put my trust in them. During my trial, she sat me down and asked what I wanted, and I was honest and said ‘no idea’. She laughed and reassured me that I’m not the only woman in the world who doesn’t wear make-up (even though it feels like it sometimes). She went for a very natural look and talked me through the process. Even though my make-up looked great and was very subtle, it was still a shock to see myself with it on. It took me the whole day to get used to it, but I was really pleased with the result, and felt like a princess. When it comes to hair (you’ll be pleased to hear I’m not as clueless), I had a rough idea of what style I wanted but was torn between a half up and half down look or an up do. My hair stylist was wonderful! She created both looks for me, took loads of pictures and made sure I was happy with both styles. After a lot of deliberation I’ve decided on an up do, as my dress has dramatic front and back detailing that I didn’t want anything to detract from. I left my hair and make-up in place, like they suggested, for the whole day and it still looked wonderful by 11pm. I was really pleased with the whole experience and being dressed up made me feel so excited to finally marry my best friend. Thank you all for sticking with me throughout my wedding journey. I hope you enjoy planning your own day and everything turns out perfectly!

Melissa’s hubby-to-be opens a window into the wedding planning journey from the groom’s perspective
H
ello readers, as I’m sure you’re all well aware, my beautiful Melissa has been detailing our journey from our couch-based lockdown proposal to the wedding altar, and what a journey it has been! Thankfully Melissa is the most organised person on the planet, so my involvement in this process has been minimal at best, however that being said, I’ve picked up one or two things along the way that Melissa has generously given me this space to share...

GUEST LIST Being the social beast I am, I found putting together a finalised wedding guest list quite difficult. Much to Melissa’s dismay I wanted to invite everyone I’d ever met and their postman. However, (thankfully) the capacity of our venue and overall budget (I don’t think I appreciated how expensive day guests are) put the brakes on my invite rampage and forced me to reign in my expectations somewhat. I found that I felt quite guilty about not inviting everyone I’ve ever spoken to, but you definitely do need to draw the line somewhere. My advice to anyone planning a
wedding is don’t lose any sleep over not inviting someone, chances are they probably weren’t going to invite you to their wedding anyway!
CHOOSING YOUR GROOMSMEN Thankfully this was quite an easy one for me. My best man has been my closest ally and confident for 15 years now, so there was no hesitation in my mind when asking him. My biggest concern was that having four groomsmen might be too many, but I couldn’t imagine any of them not being next to me for support, so the thought of losing one of them from the party would have been like removing oxygen. Another thing I’m grateful for is that they all get along brilliantly. I’ve heard some real horror stories about infighting between people’s bridesmaids and groomsmen, so this is definitely something to consider when selecting your party. You might love them all, but do they like each other? You’d think that people would pull together for their friend’s biggest day, but you never know.
PLANNING YOUR STAG DO I’ll be honest, I never really saw the purpose of a stag do. Admittedly in my mind, I had this warped perception of the event being a trip to a dubious location to take part in nefarious activities. I’m not a particularly good drinker, and as I creep onto the darker side of my 30s, I’m even worse at handling a hangover, so the prospect of this seemed less than appealing. Sitting down to discuss with my (similarly worldweary) best man, we came to the reassuring
realisation that a stag do can be whatever you want it to be. In my instance, I like Centre Parcs, and the thought of a trip there (and many, many barbecues) seemed like a slice of heaven, so this was a bit of a no-brainer. Ultimately my advice to any groom-to-be is don’t be afraid to book something that will make you happy. If your groomsmen deserve their place in your party, they won’t challenge your choices.
THE SPEECH This is a big one, probably the biggest responsibility of the groom. The wedding day is such a big event in a person’s life, and the speeches really stick with attendees – good or bad! My first piece of advice would be not to leave it to the last minute. It’s certainly one of those things that can be put off, but I promise it won’t be worth the anxiety! There are thousands of great speech templates online that you can use as a starting point. Once I got started, I found writing about my loved ones and the significance of the day was easy, as it’s your opportunity to be honest, and just gush about everything. You proposed for a reason and this is your chance to share it with everyone, including your bride. Write from your heart, speak from the bottom of your lungs and try not to stare at your feet the whole time! Oh, and practicing the speech once or twice before the big day probably isn’t a bad idea! Thank you for reading and good luck!

Travel goals
An island country nestled in South Asia, Sri Lanka has always been a bucket-list destination for Louise Prance, with her recent trip living up to her expectations and then some…
T
here were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family. While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.
MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean 84
along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.
A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT While tired and hungry from our journey, these emotions were soon replaced with appreciation of the traditional welcome we received. Heading into the hotel we were given a quick tour of the awe-inspiring grounds and facilities, and it was straight down to breakfast. With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay. If you’re looking for something ala carte, the beachside Sea-MeatsSpice Seafood restaurant is the place to be. With the Head Chef looking after the menu, be prepared for a gastronomical sensation, before retiring to the plush sofas for a sundowner with the sand between your toes. The Fuze bar is perfect for a nightcap, and with dramatic ceilings and art aplenty, it oozes luxury. Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

ART AND CULTURE Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.
OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter from predators. With little stops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest – and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.
TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…
A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.
ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

Caribbean vibes Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand
A
s the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

ACCOMMODATION Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.
THE LANDINGS SPA The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.
ST. LUCIAN CUISINE You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).
EXCURSIONS If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!
FIVE STAR LUXURY If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. Go on, treat yourself !
