Fun times F

inally, the sun is shining! It feels like it’s been a long time coming doesn’t it? As much as I’m very much a winter bunny, I must admit that feeling a warm breeze on my face for a change has cheered me up. My friends and I have decided to compile a bucket list of activities we’d like to enjoy this summer, and plans are well underway for our very own CWM bride’s hen do. If you’re worried about what your best gals might have planned for yours, the best way is to maintain an open line of communication. Make sure you lay down perimeters and make it abundantly clear well in advance if L plates, sashes and the like aren’t your thing. Olivia, Nolwenn and I sat bride Melissa down for a chat first to make sure we didn’t make any faux pas and asked her to provide us with a guest list and options for available dates. No doubt you’ll have been careful about your bridesmaid choices, they love you and know you well, so we’re sure you’re in capable hands. Relax and enjoy the break from planning everything yourself. You’ll find this, the first of our summer issues, brimming with plenty of inspiration and advice as always. If you’re feeling a little bewildered when it comes to finding the perfect photographer to capture your wedding, we introduce you to a few of the region’s finest, as we get to know them and what makes them tick. Still hungry for more wedspiration? Don’t forget to check out our social media channels @YourCheshireMerseysideWedding, @cwm_wedding, @countyweddings and of course, the latest member of the family, our YouTube channel (just head over to www.youtube.com and search “County Wedding Magazines”). Enjoy and keeeep planning! FABULOUS FLORALS While we take an in-depth look into what’s trending in the world of wedding flowers from ceremony to celebrations this issue, let’s not forget our real wedding couples have already put their best foot forward on the floral front Kelly Andrews, editor and are also showing us how it’s done...

BACK ON TRACK Carringtons Catering is welcoming the return of its jam-packed events diary with dates already being booked up until 2025. Hitting record numbers in its 40-year history, the team look set to cater for up to 15 events a week during this next 12 months, with some wedding and private functions requiring more than 70 members of staff to facilitate them. It’s a stark contrast to the previous two years for the company’s directors Darren and Helen Wynn who were heavily hit by the pandemic and left with no choice but to put operations on hold until the easing of national restrictions. Master Chef of Great Britain and director Darren says, “We’re back to doing what we love with the venues we’re proud to work with – we’ve never been this busy.” Carringtons Catering is one of the North West’s longest standing independent caterers, providing bespoke catering, event and hospitality services. The team has built an outstanding reputation for delivering culinary excellence and a professional service, together with a first-class dining experience. Helen added, “It’s great to know that people are still planning for the future and that they haven’t been deterred by the events of the last few years. Many have been waiting years to have their dream days, so we

feel very proud to have been chosen to make these happen. We have so many exciting things coming up in 2022 and beyond, and it’s great to be back.” Watch this space! Check out www.carringtons-catering.co.uk

These concept stores offer an immersive retail experience where you can discover the latest trends and experiment with different looks through the curation of fashionable jewellery and watches. The highlight of the new-look store features for us of course, is the design bar. You can even bring to life your design vision and create your own unique, 8

bespoke item of jewellery. Also in store, you’ll find the HS Loves trend bar where you can get the look by discovering design staples, leading fashion brands and new trends. Plus, the ear-piercing salon – a dedicated space for earpiercing with a selection of earrings to stack and create a look. Signet UK and Ireland managing director, Neil Old says, “We’ve come a long way since Harriet Samuel opened her first store in 1890, but with her customer-focused approach and appreciation of the value of jewellery, we think she’d approve.” The new H Samuel stores being opened in the next few months will be at key UK locations including locally at Liverpool ONE.

LOCAL NEWS WINNING WAYS Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa has been crowned Large Hotel of the Year in the Marketing Cheshire Awards. The Nantwich-based hotel, part of the Hand Picked Hotels collection, was also shortlisted for Wedding Venue of the Year. The prestigious Marketing Cheshire awards recognises excellence and outstanding achievement by local businesses and individuals working in the county and Warrington’s visitor economy and has been running for 16 years. Rookery Hall’s innovation and dedication to its guest experience helped it to scoop this accolade. During the pandemic it opened up its grounds to offer takeaway treats, as well as organising treasure hunts for families and create exciting al fresco dining opportunities. Having gone from strength to strength the hotel has also retained its four red-star rating from the AA and had achieved a second AA Rosette for its restaurant. In addition, it continues to be recognised as a five bubble spa by the Good Spa Guide. NEW VENUE ALERT! Nestled in the heart of Warrington, Cheshire, the old Parr’s Bank has been transformed into the county’s newest wedding venue. Built in 1877 and Grade II listed, every detail in the building has been meticulously thought out. With the overall design leaning towards early 20th-century Art Deco, the oak flooring, glass ceilings, marble pillars and stunning central chandelier are sure to leave you in awe. You and your guests are also able to access the venue’s Coffee Bar, Counters, which provides scrumptious Indian toastie boards, speciality coffee and smoky cocktails. Oddfellows Chester has appointed a new team to focus on driving the events side of the business forward post pandemic. Rebecca Taylor has taken on the role of coordinating events for the Georgian town house hotel, while Jade Bradbourn will support her in managing the food and beverage side of things. Both have previously worked for the award-winning hotel restaurant and garden on the operations side, and jumped at the chance to front the event planning team. Rebecca originally joined Oddfellows after nine years with another iconic local wedding venue, Peckforton Castle. She says, “I’m excited about the opportunity to really get to know our clients, helping them plan their weddings and be creative with how we do it. Most of our couples choose Oddfellows because we’re a venue with personality and are known for our happy, friendly team. I can’t wait – it’s going to be a busy year ahead as we catch up on all the celebrations we missed over the last two years.” Events at Oddfellows Chester can surpass 100 people, with the whole top floor of the design-led hotel encompassing a private three-room event space with separate bar and roof terrace. There are also smaller spaces such as the Tea Rooms, famous for its upside-down tea party hanging from the ceiling and the Secret Garden’s Potting Shed area, which is under cover and heated by glass panelled fires. You won’t be alone as a new study commissioned by the International Golf Travel Market claims more than 40 per cent of golfers name spa facilities to be key influencers when choosing a golf holiday. IN REMEMBRANCE Liverpool Lighthouse Choir has released Abide With Me to mark the 33rd anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster. The much-loved hymn had been sung by the choir’s predecessor, Love and Joy Gospel Choir, at the Hillsborough memorial service while the names of those who lost their lives during the tragedy on 15th April 1989 were read out. This was done every year for the past 20 years before the pandemic. The choir recorded this track as part of a collection to pay tribute to those affected by the disaster, including several of its members, and to offer hope and healing to everyone affected by loss at this time. The 10

effects of the past two years on people’s well-being have been wideranging and unprecedented, so it seemed natural for the Choir, which was formed during lockdown, to extend the dedication of its music to include all those who’ve suffered. Abide With Me is free to stream on all platforms including Spotify and is 99p to download. All proceeds will go to Liverpool Lighthouse Charity, which supports music in the local community with a focus on disadvantaged and vulnerable young people. For further information, check out the website www.liverpoollighthouse.com/community-choir

Closed off by grand wooden barn doors it leads into the private garden. Celebrations are also hosted in the Meadow Barn, which can accommodate 80 for the wedding breakfast and 140 for the evening. REAL WEDDINGS

S

arah and Mike’s eyes met across a crowded room at a friend’s party during their first year of sixth form college. Indeed, it was his eyes that Sarah was attracted to: “They’re a lovely shade of blue,” she says. The pair hit it off right away, immediately feeling at ease in each other’s company, even though it took Mike another month to convince Sarah to go on a date with him. But needless to say, they’re both so glad he did. When the couple had been dating for a year or two, Mike took Sarah to a romantic spot in their home county of Lincolnshire to watch the sun set. But, when he suggested an impromptu visit back to the same place one Friday evening, she had no idea what he had planned. After setting up the camera to film the sun going down, he got down on one knee and asked Sarah to marry him. “I burst into tears, I never thought I’d react that way,” Sarah remembers. Mike had bought the ring months beforehand and had been planning this proposal for some time, despite spending the wedding day of a friend, just days before, deflecting questions about whether they might be next! Mike was keen to say “I do” in a church, and Sarah was happy to go along with his wishes. “We have quite a few around us, but St Helen’s Northwich is definitely the biggest and prettiest in the area. Also, the vicar was lovely and we had a great rapport with him, so felt that was the one quite quickly,” Sarah explains. When it came to the reception venue, the couple fell in love with the family feel of Abbeywood, as well as it’s rustic yet elegant vibe. “We both love walking and being in the countryside, so its beautiful gardens and glass house made it feel just right for us,” Sarah tells us. Join us now as the bride shares more memories of their beautiful wedding day, which took place on 6th November, 2021...

SETTING THE SCENE As a huge book lover, Sarah knew she wanted to include her main hobby in the theme of the wedding day. “I love the classics such as Pride and Prejudice, and Jane Eyre,” she tells us. So, they chose five of Sarah’s favourite books and five of Mike’s and named the tables after them. They also selected quotes about love or marriage from each and incorporated them into the tablenumber design. The table plan itself was also literary themed with each table being depicted as an open book complete with the number on one side and guests names on the other. The place names and favours were combined in the shape of mini honey pots from a local producer. “We wanted to include a nature theme and felt honey would be great,” Sarah explains. Each pot had a ribbon tied around it with a key and name tag attached. The key was a bottle opener and the tag read: “The key to happiness is love and the ability to open a bottle.” Guests names were written on the other side. The centrepieces, created by Victoria from Dressed to Impress, were birdcages wrapped in eucalyptus with candles inside. Each stood on a stack of three antiqued books, surrounded by vases

“My brother read a poem at our ceremony, which I'd given to Mike on his 21st birthday. I hadn't heard it read aloud for so long, and it describes everything I felt for Mike then and still do now.” 29

containing ivory roses and gypsophila. “Victoria amazed me by bringing our vision to life. The room looked incredible. It was better than I imagined and she went above and beyond to make sure it was perfect,” Sarah remembers. Abbeywood has an on-site florist who created the wedding party bouquets and buttonholes as well as an arrangement for the cake. Speaking of the big-day bake, Sarah’s mum spent hours practising to get the right size and texture, which all paid off in the final showstopping product. It was topped with the word “Finally,” which seemed fitting after postponing the wedding twice and eventually getting married 14 months after their original date. The venue’s in-house team took care of the day’s catering needs. Sarah says, “The food was outstanding, our guests were raving about it all day. We gave them the option of three starters, three mains and two desserts and all of them were amazing.” The bride dined on fishcakes to start, sea bass for main and lemon tart to finish. Mike meanwhile, enjoyed sweet potato soup, followed by chicken and a delicious-sounding Baileys chocolate trifle for dessert. Bespoked Wedding Cars provided transport from the church to Abbeywood in the shape of two cars: one for the bride and fatherof-the-bride, which later would carry the newlyweds, and one for the bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride. “They were gorgeous and really spacious, which helped me with my dress as it was so big I needed lots of room! The drivers were lovely too,” Sarah recalls.

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART The beautiful bride chose a Ronald Joyce gown, “I absolutely adored it. I felt like a princess in it and didn’t want to take it off,” she says. It was a simple Mikado silk, off-the-shoulder silhouette, with a jewelled belt around the waist. “I chose this style as I don’t like anything too fussy and it’s such a classic style, it will definitely stand the test of time,” Sarah explains. She accessorised with pearl drop earrings and a pearl and diamanté bracelet from Lace and Favour, plus a Thomas Sabo pearl bracelet, which Mike had given her as a wedding gift. She opted against wearing a necklace for fear it might overshadow the dress’ gorgeous neckline. Mike wore dark grey suit style Darcy (love what they did there), which had an on-trend checked pattern. His groomsmen were dressed in plain grey suits, with checked waistcoats and sage green ties to match the groom. The bridesmaids’ dresses were sage green, with lace corset bodices. They were embellished with tiny sequins, which sparkled as they caught the light. “I needed to find a style to suit all of them, which I managed in the end, but it took a while,” Sarah confides. The flowergirl wore a silk dress in the same material as the bride’s along with a super-cute flower crown.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE A harpist played during the ceremony and drinks reception, proving popular with guests and newlyweds alike. During the evening the couple’s friend Sarah performed her aerial act, which was a big hit and a memorable moment. Later on, a live band filled the dancefloor and the evening was finished with sparklers, which only seemed right the day after Bonfire Night! Sarah remembers, “I’ve Had The Time Of My Life played at the end of the night and one of my bridesmaids asked if I wanted to be lifted, so I agreed. At the same point in the song where Johnny lifts Baby, the girls all picked me up. Mike stood in the middle and boosted me even higher, so my head was touching the drapes!”

“Always shop around and get quotes from different suppliers. It can work massively in your favour.” 31

“Things will always go wrong, you can’t control every aspect of the day, but it’ll still be perfect anyway.”

FOR GREEN Katie and Tom’s venue styling was inspired by their love of houseplants

K

atie and Tom met at their university Freshers’ Week and by the following year they’d decided to move in together, just the two of them. Tom got down on one knee and proposed to Katie on holiday in Greece seven years later. “We feel incredibly lucky that we decided on September 2021 as our wedding date. It was our 10-year anniversary and we thought it would give us lots of time to save some money,” Katie says. Little did they know the disruption the intervening pandemic would have caused them if they’d chosen an earlier date. “Somehow, everything worked out completely in our favour,” Katie continues. The couple adore North Wales. Katie has holidayed around Conwy since she was tiny and since being together she and Tom have spent many a week walking the hills in and around Snowdonia. So, the area holds a special place in their hearts. “When deciding on a venue we wanted to choose somewhere that showed off the area to our friends and family and we were so impressed with Plas Maenan that we didn’t really consider anywhere else,” Katie explains. Join us now, as the bride tells us more about the big day itself...

BOTANICAL CHIC Katie and Tom have over 60 houseplants and these served as their inspiration for their venue styling. Table and place names matched the invitations and order-of-the-day, designed in a botanical style with foliage. The tables were all named after various types of houseplants such as pothos, fern and palm. Other venue décor, as well as the centrepieces, was kept simple and classic, using candles, glass jars, foliage and plants. And the wedding favours? Why houseplants all round, of course! The beautiful bouquets, buttonholes and corsages were predominantly made up of foliage including eucalyptus, pine and ferns, with small white wax flowers and navy thistles dispersed throughout. Katie remembers, “Amanda and Jane at Plas Maenan went above and beyond in decorating the venue for us, with green and white everywhere, and even a blossom tree at the top table. It was truly perfect.”

“Attend a wedding fair early on in the planning process. This way you can tick off all the suppliers in one go and get them booked well in advance.” – Katie

36

REAL WEDDINGS IN THE NAVY Katie wore an off-the-shoulder, champagnecoloured lace mermaid-style dress with a bustle. “I wanted a fitted gown and knew as soon as I tried it on that it was the one,” she tells us. She kept her jewellery simple and elegant with a pearl necklace and earrings, and completed the look with a pair of navy heels for a pop of colour. The groom was dressed in a navy check suit with white shirt and brown leather shoes, accessorised with a gold tie and pocket square. His groomsmen were dressed to match with smaller buttonholes, which allowed Tom to stand out. Katie’s sister Becky reported for bridesmaid duties and chose a navy off-the-shoulder dress to complement the palette and the silhouette of Katie’s gown. The wedding rings are particularly special as they were handmade by the couple, while being overseen by jeweller Amber CooperGreen, and old friend of Tom’s.

MUSIC TO MY EARS Piano and vocal duo Carly & Russ performed during the ceremony and Katie walked down the aisle to their rendition of The Book Of Love by Peter Gabriel. “It was a true highlight for everyone, Carly has the voice of an angel,” Katie remembers. For the evening a DJ provided the music and was a great success.

“Have a whole wedding weekend if you can as the day itself will fly by. Splashing out on a full two days means you actually have time to relax and take it all in.” – Tom MEMORABLE MOMENT Katie recalls, “Just before the ceremony, I was in the bridal suite looking out at the view and pulling myself together. I looked down and there was Tom, outside the main entrance doing the exact same thing. My hair and make-up artist quickly shouted, ‘Don’t turn around!’ This moment of both taking some deep breaths, together yet apart, was very special.”

REAL WEDDINGS

BLACK-TIE Nikki and James’ wedding day was elegant, intimate and oh-so romantic Images courtesy of Meredith Photography

O

ne could argue that Nikki and James’ wedding day is wholly thanks to James’ friends. After all, if they hadn’t convinced him not to head home early from a night out in 2016, he and Nikki may never have met. But happily, meet they did and felt an immediate attraction, each finding the other incredibly easy to get on with. They spent the whole evening talking, with James doing his utmost to impress her by ordering expensive cocktails! Knowing she was the woman for him, James bought an engagement ring just a few months later. James had intended to propose exactly one year to the day after

they met, but the nerves became too much, so he brought his plans forward a week! They were on holiday in Thailand on the banks of the Chao Phraya river when he popped the question, which was a complete surprise to Nikki who had absolutely no idea. Nikki’s parents were married at the beautiful Christ Church Port Sunlight, so she knew from the moment they were engaged that she wanted to do the same. The reception venue too was an easy choice – The Art School being one of the couple’s favourite restaurants in Liverpool. The date was set for 10th September 2021, and the theme was uber-chic black tie. Read on as Nikki tells us more... 39

James wore a bespoke navy velvet jacket, with a different bow tie to his groomsmen. The gents all wore black tie to fit the theme.

I knew I wanted something fitted with sleeves and a long train and tried on loads of dresses before deciding on the one, a Mark Lesley gown. I accessorised with jewellery that James bought me as well as a custom-made tiara.

The flowers were important to me as I wanted to replicate as far as possible the shape of James’ nan’s bouquet when she married more than 70 years ago. The end result was a big bouquet with a dramatic draping effect. The flowers were white and green to fit the theme.

Since we didn’t have an evening party, we held a cocktail reception after the ceremony for our guests who came to see us get married at the church.

James says, ‘The highlight for me was that first glimpse of Nikki as she walked down the aisle. She looked stunning.’ Walking down the aisle on my dad’s arm was also my most memorable moment.

40

While the drinks were being served, we had a violinist playing some of our favourite songs. He was very much a hit and played during the ceremony too.

The candle holders in our centrepieces were black for a simple effect that tied in with the elegant theme.

REAL WEDDINGS

The bridesmaids’ dresses were custom-made in ivory with a black band around the waist. We matched the ivory hue with that of my wedding dress. The simple place names were written in elegant calligraphy.

Our friend surprised us with some cupcakes on the day of the wedding, which she’d made herself and decorated in black and white icing.

“The whole day exceeded my expectations.” For our wedding breakfast, we dined on a seasonal tasting menu with vegan and vegetarian options for my dad and James’ sister.

As wedding favours, we had glass jars containing M&Ms, custom made with our initials printed on them

The unforgettable speeches from best man Robert and my father, John, were heartwarming and humorous in equal measure. Rob had even gone to the trouble of buying outfits to wear to superimpose himself into old photographs of James, which had everyone in hysterics.

We went to London for a week on honeymoon – something we planned together. We saw a few shows and ate at some nice restaurants. It was a great trip and we thoroughly enjoyed spending time together after the wedding.

“We used https://trello.com to organise our tasks, which we found really useful.”

We were just so smiley on the day as it’d been almost four years since getting engaged and our third attempt due to Covid. We were so glad to finally get married with the people we love around us.

LOVE CHANGES

Annie and Thom’s big-day plans were thrown into turmoil when their venue suffered a fire just days before the wedding Images courtesy of Matthew Rycraft Photography

T

hom was Annie’s first ever Tinder date and as it turned out, they’d grown up just one road away from each other. “We knew loads of the same people and enjoyed all the same local places, yet it took an algorithm to bring us together!” Annie says. After a whirlwind romance they bought their first home together four months later and Thom proposed on their first anniversary. To celebrate the occasion they planned a weekend away and Thom suggested they go for a walk on Crosby Beach, as this was where they shared their first date. It was there, much to Annie’s surprise, that Thom popped the question. The couple took their time choosing a wedding venue, a process which included two trips to Barbados just to rule it out! But one thing that was clear was the date, 12th February, as this was when they met and got engaged. The downside to this was that their original 2021 plans all had to be moved by a full year due to Covid. They wanted to say “I do” at Thom’s family church, St Peter’s, and fell in love with their reception venue Thornton Manor on the first viewing. “With its history and cosy feel we felt it was the perfect winter-wedding venue,” Annie says. However, disaster loomed around the corner as a fire broke out at Thornton Manor the weekend before the big day. “It was a surreal day, finding out the wedding we’d been planning for more than three years wasn’t going to happen. Plus, it was such a sad sight seeing a building that meant so much to us be destroyed, but

we both agreed that whatever was to come, we’d be walking down the aisle that Saturday,” Annie remembers. So, they gathered their options together and made a plan. On Monday morning Annie called 75 wedding venues to see if there was any way they could host the wedding, which was just one week away. By 11am, they had a few options with viewings set up and a self-imposed 4pm deadline to make a decision and let suppliers and guests know. Not least because they had guests who were already on their way over from the U.S! Then, they met their wedding’s saviour, Rachael from the Isla Gladstone Conservatory. Annie tells us what happened next, “She agreed to let us have a viewing within the hour and as soon as we walked in we knew it was right. Although very different, it still felt historical and even on that dull February day the light and airiness of the space was amazing. So, Rachael got straight to work and we achieved together in two days what most people do in 12 months. Nothing was too much trouble and she worked with our existing suppliers, even allowing our caterer to work in their kitchens. We really do owe saving our wedding to her. She went above and beyond to make a miracle happen.” So, after enough re-planning and stress to last anyone a lifetime the big day went ahead on the all-important date at the beautiful Isla Gladstone Conservatory. Read on as the bride shares more happy memories of the occasion with us... 45

We left the church in a vintage Rolls Royce. It was so nice for us both to have that time alone together. Thom asked our chauffeur to drive past Goodison Park for the 3pm match kick-off, which lead to fans shouting their congratulations to us and banging on the windows. It was definitely a memorable part of the day.

Kim from Qube Events went above and beyon d with our venue décor, adapting what we’d already booked to suit the new venue. We went with blossom tree centrepieces, with gypso phila and eucalyptus and floating candles.

Food was always important to us and Barrett’s had been incredible from the start. The team delivered the most amazing menu even in an unfamiliar kitchen. Our wedding breakfast was a picnic plate starter, sous vide beef or salmon with lobster bisque and Eton tidy.

BEHIND

Allow us to introduce you to some of the region’s finest wedding photographers DEBBIE MCGREGOR PHOTOGRAPHY

www.debbiemcgregorphotography.com

Debbie began her photography journey by taking images of tress and leaves, then later cats and bees, before her subject matter evolved into weddings. Today she photographs elopements, weddings and dancers all over the world. She’s now been in the realm of photography for seven years, and absolutely loves what she does. “I’ve always had a creative and colourful soul with a big love for happily ever afters. I’m so happy I get to be a part of people’s lives in such a special and happy way,” she says. How would you describe your style of photography? “Colourful, wild, romantic yet relaxed. I love to play with colours, details, textures and storytelling. I’m hugely influenced by old fairytales like the Brothers Grimm and love how beautifully the stories are brought to life through various art forms. I love experimenting with different locations too, I’m not afraid to leap over hedges or get stuck in the mud for that perfect shot! I want my couples to have a photographer that I’d want at my own wedding.” What’s your favourite Debbie McGregor shot? “My lovely friend asked me to shoot her wedding and I remember being so nervous and excited at the same time. I love this image as it’s very intimate. They’re sharing a beautiful moment as the sun is gold and setting – super romantic. She’s absolutely breathtaking, but I love the way he’s looking at her, so the focus is on his reaction.”

CAROLINE WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

Back in 2000, Caroline was struggling to find a photographer for her own wedding. On her list was someone who was unobtrusive and creative. Naturally, she and her spouse-to-be wanted to spend the day with family and friends, not be taken away for hours and in Caroline’s words, “bullied,” something she’d experienced many times as a bridesmaid. Finally, they found the one and guests commented on how amazing she was having found the whole experience to be a breath of fresh air. Caroline tells us, “I changed my career on my wedding day. It was a blast of a light bulb moment for me. This is what I want to do with my life – be creative and offer this experience. I’ve never looked back!” How would you describe your style of photography? “I find it tricky to define as I adapt to each couple, venue and lighting. For me, it’s all about your experience and how you feel in that moment. I will say though, I’m in love with light like you wouldn’t believe! So, the answer in a nutshell? Unobtrusive, creative, emotive, romantic and dramatic.”

There are so many wedding photographers out there. How do couples choose the right one for them? “Just like you choose each other – from how you feel. Sure, the photographs have to resonate with you, but you need to have that connection with your photographer so you can trust them and feel comfortable to be vulnerable enough for them to photograph you. In fact, everything about your wedding is about how you feel, it’s an emotive day after all. If you book all of your suppliers in the same way, then you’ll find your tribe, and they’ll move mountains for you.” 51

DANIEL COOPER PHOTOGRAPHY

www.danielcooperphotography.com

Daniel’s passion for photography originated in his home country, New Zealand, where he picked up his dad’s camera and took it with him on his travels around the world. One day, he received a phone call from a close friend who was adamant that he should photograph their wedding. Despite his initial reluctance, he agreed to take that first leap and discovered his passion for wedding photography. How would you describe your style of photography? “I have a natural style and love working in black and white, as it strips the photo back, letting you focus on the raw elements of the subject.” How would you capture amazing outdoor pictures at a winter wedding if the weather turns bad? “Not to fear, some of the most unique photos are taken in bad weather. It’s all about being prepared, both in terms of clothing and

footwear, and mentally. Basically, allow yourself to go with the flow and have faith in the skills and ability of the team you’ve put together. Just remember, the UK weather can’t be tamed! So, embrace it.”

KEVIN BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY

Around 16 years ago, Kevin was asked by a friend of a friend to photograph their upcoming wedding as they’d seen and loved some of his travel images, which he’d been taking since the early 90s. Kevin enjoyed himself so much that a few months later when someone else asked him to capture their big day he jumped at the chance... that was more than 500 weddings ago.

How would you describe your style of photography? “Our style is relaxed with an emphasis on capturing all those precious moments, while getting some family and posed shots with minimum fuss. Our images aren’t overworked and we don’t use filters, which means they won’t date and will still look good in 50 years, especially the black and white ones, which are timeless. We also include a pre-wedding shoot, which is a lovely way to run through the plans for the day and get our couples used to being in front of the camera.”

What are the benefits of having a second shooter on the day? “Carole and I pretty much always work together so that at certain parts of the day, such as during the ceremony, we can capture pictures from different angles. We also manage to split up during the morning to get the preparations of both partners. Carole, as a mum of two girls, is always a very soothing influence and as one of our brides said, “Everyone needs a Carole.”

LAURA PALMERIA PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTOGRAPHY

www.laurapalmeriaphotography.co.uk

Laura has a long-held passion for photography. She spent her 20s gaining the relevant qualifications and by her 30s she was capturing weddings as an assistant photographer. By her late 30s she’d decided to strike out on her own and become a self-employed photographer and has been happily working hard ever since. Even the pandemic couldn’t put an end to her love for the art, as she found herself commissioned by Claire House Children’s Hospice, where she has offered pregnancy photography for the past two years. How would you describe your style of photography? “Candid, professional and completely committed to my customers.” What questions should we ask our wedding photographer before booking? “Find out whether photography is their business or their hobby. Too many people are using their hobby to try to deliver an excellent quality of service. Next, it’s important to find out if they’re insured and whether they have a contract. Particularly, given the uncertainty of the last couple of

years, I’d also advise finding out what their policy is if the wedding date is moved. And finally, of course, you’ll want to know what’s included in the packages they offer.”

Stephen’s love of photography began at an early age. He remembers even as a kid when his friends would knock for him to go to the beach, he’d grab his camera. As the years passed his trusty camera had always been within arm’s reach and when he moved to London he saved up his wages from his bar job to buy a Praktika BMS 35mm SLR. It went through so much film and one day, while back in Liverpool getting a roll developed, the woman behind the counter asked him a question he says he’ll never forget: “How long have you been a professional photographer?” Stephen tells us, “It was the biggest wake-up call I’ve ever had. My dream job had been staring me in the face all that time and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Together with his wife, he’s been photographing weddings for more than a decade now, and they’ve loved every moment.

How would you describe your style of photography? “I believe every photographer has their own style, their own eye. My personality is very quiet, I watch everything. So, if I had to label my style, I’d say documentary. I look for the moments that might have gone unnoticed on the day. I love it when I show couples their images and they say, ‘When was that taken?’” Are black and white images still popular and should we opt to have them? “That’s a big ‘yes’ in my opinion! They’re timeless and you’ll never get tired of looking at a black and white image. Undoubtedly colour has its place, but a black and white image of a church can be so stunning. I think they show more of an atmosphere.” 55

“Just wanted to say a huge thank you for our beautiful wedding flowers on Sunday. They were honestly just perfect and I cannot tell you how pleased I was. Everything form my gorgeous bouquet, to the bridesmaids posies and the tables flowers they turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. The entire team at Booker have been so helpful and easy to deal with and I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate it. The flowers fitted in perfectly to the surroundings on the day and just finished off a perfect setting. Thanks again for everything.” — Eilidh and James, July 2021

EXPERT ADVICE

SHOW YOUR METAL I don’t know if I should wear silver, white gold or rose gold jewellery with my wedding dress. Are there any hard and fast rules?

Getty Images

It’s your day so you need to wear what you love. If there’s any detail on your dress though, it can look amazing to complement this with your jewellery and other accessories, some might have silver or pearl embellishments for example. A lot of brides like to keep their wedding jewellery the same colour as their wedding and engagement rings, but equally many others who have white gold or platinum rings, have an overall theme for the day of rose gold, so they’ve worn that instead. It’s your day, so as long as you love everything that you’re wearing and it makes you feel fabulous that’s all that matters. Rachael Whitwam | www.oharesjewellers.co.uk

HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know A MATTER OF FAITH I’m a Christian, but my husband-to-be isn’t and we’re struggling to decide what sort of ceremony to have to make sure we’re both happy and feel married. Can you help? I see this dilemma between couples often and it’s not easily overcome without guidance. Any compromise would leave the other feeling like they’ve sacrificed their values and beliefs, which can lead to resentment – not the best start to married life! Your differences should be celebrated and not be a reason to clash, but the strict rules for officiants are what causes the problem. Opting for a member of the clergy to officiate will mean a full religious ceremony. Opting for a registrar or a humanist celebrant will mean a stricly non-religious ceremony, but there is another option. An independent celebrant has the complete freedom to include anything in your ceremony. Incorporating some religion can be a happy medium and you’d be surprised how easy that actually is. Some popular wedding poems are actually based on the scriptures. For example, 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 (Love is patient, love is kind...) Remember, you are two individuals coming together to share your lives. Your beliefs and values are a part of who you are and will also contribute to why you love each other so much. BEACHY VOWS

Getty Images

We’ve got our hearts set on saying “I do” on our favourite beach, it’s somewhere that means a lot to us. But we aren’t sure of the legalities now that more outdoor ceremony spaces are licensed. What does it all mean and can we do this? Let me first assure you that yes, you can absolutely have your wedding ceremony on a beach. In the UK, you can easily make this dream a reality. Once you’ve completed the statutory marriage at your local registry office, you’re free to have a celebrant-led wedding anywhere you like. The sky really is the limit when it comes to celebrant-led weddings. Whether you’re planning a ceremony by the sea, in the mountains or even in your own backyard, the options are endless. The recent changes to the law around marriages outside only apply at licensed venues. Although the UK government is considering recommendations from the Law Commission’s review of marriage laws, whereby celebrants will hopefully be able to legally marry couples in outdoor locations other than licensed venues. So, we can’t wait to see all the beautiful weddings that will be taking place in the months and years to come. Sheila Duncan | www.puresilkceremonies.co.uk

PLEASE BE SEATED I’ve been putting off the seating plan as the thought terrifies me! Do you have any advice on making it work? Though difficult to arrange, a formal seating chart can make things much simpler on the day, especially when it comes to serving your guests the right food. So, where do you start? First, check the tables and their arrangement. Most venues provide circular dining tables, but they do differ in size and capacity, so this will ultimately dictate your seating arrangement. From here, you can begin grouping your guest list. Our advice would be to keep mixing to a minimum here. For example, if you have a group of friends from university, seat them together. Although you want people to 64

mix and mingle, guests will feel much more comfortable if they’re sat with at least a few familiar faces. As far as positioning goes, etiquette states that you place close friends and family as near to the main wedding party table as possible. This is a way to show their importance and significance and will help special guests feel like a big part of your day. When creating your seating plan we can’t recommend a digital chart enough. Apps like WeddingWire, Wedding Mapper and AllSeated make it easy to plot your wedding breakfast with drag-and-drop functionality to rearrange guests until you’ve cracked it. Q&A

Q&A Shopping for the dream dress

THE ENTOURAGE Who should I bring to my boutique appointment with me? Heather Laver from The Bridal Lounge in Northwich (www.thebridallounge.co.uk) shares some words of wisdom. The great thing is there’s no right or wrong answer here. Normally, brides bring along their mother, maid-of-honour and a few bridesmaids, but you can choose whoever your wish to join you. I’ve even had a few fathers, brothers and grandfathers come along to appointments. Usually, the guests you choose to accompany you are there for one of two reasons: you either want their seal of approval for the dress or you want their honest opinions. Bring people who know what you like and what you look good in. The last thing you want is to wear someone else’s idea of the perfect dress when it’s clearly not right for you. Also, don’t bring too many people. If you want to invite several family members and all the bridesmaids consider booking two separate appointments. Everyone will want you to listen to their opinions, which can get confusing and stressful when eight people are talking to you at once! We recommend keeping the entourage to a maximum of four guests per appointment, then come back with others if you need to.

PERFECT TIMING When should I start looking for a wedding dress and do you have any advice on how to go about my search? Ali Hamilton at local boutique Blue & Sixpence (www.blueandsixpence.co.uk) gives us the benefit of her experience. Work backwards from your date and venue. These are the crucial factors in narrowing down your style. There’s no point setting your heart on a summer beach boho gown for a grand hotel. Your wedding gown should be your first big purchase, then the bridesmaids’ dresses, not the other way around. The focus is always on the bride! Next, set a budget. Research within it and maybe 10 per cent extra, but no more. Also, remember to factor in alterations and accessories. Be realistic and honest with yourself and your bridal consultant. It also helps to choose a boutique that offers payment plans, like we do, as this will really help you spread the cost. If you need to economise anywhere, do so on the things that won’t be seen, such as underskirts, shoes, garters and so on. You can save hundreds by buying these pre-owned or even borrow them. We specialise in sample designer wedding gowns, which are bought off-thepeg. So, we recommend shopping 12 to 15 months in advance, particularly if you still need to purchase other big-ticket items. Don’t leave it until the last minute as seamstresses get booked up months in advance. But also, don’t shop too far ahead as your plans, taste or venue may change. 81

Now, Deck of Scarlet is launching in the UK with its signature range including the Threeway Solid Lip Oil (£25), Metal Leaf Shadow Pot (£22) and Dual Drama Liquid Liner (£25). Available at www.deckofscarlet.com

BLUSHING BRIDE

Cream blush has seen a surge in popularity of late, probably because of its subtle glow and ability to brighten up the complexion. ICONIC London’s Sheer Blush melts into the skin, giving cheeks a beautiful veil of soft-focus colour. The gel-to-watercolour formula puts you in full control, and it’s a dream to build and blend leaving cheeks sculpted and lifted. Big-day beauty at its best! £21, www.iconiclondoninc.com 82

BUILDING BLOCKS

Introducing The Elements, a new beauty brand on the block that combines science with nature to create specialist skincare formulations. Based on the periodic table of elements, the range has been formulated with a combination of results-driven active ingredients and trend-led extracts. Each element is portrayed clearly on the front of the pack, allowing for straight forward, fuss-free regime building. The start of the brand’s skincare story, born during the pandemic when skin was at its most stressed, is the Clear Skin collection, made up of seven products including Deep Pore Cleanser (£8), Purifying Detox Mask (£8) and Pore Refining Serum (£10). Available at www.the-elements.co.uk

LASH LOVE

Helping lashes to stand out from the crowd is Mavala’s best-selling Double Lash treatment. This award-winning overnight serum uses a new and improved clinically proven formula to increase eyelash retention and growth for fuller, longer and healthier lashes in around 30 days. Designed to use much like a hair conditioner, the treatment revitalises and repairs lashes, preventing breakage and nourishing from root to tip. BEAUTY NEWS

FULL BLAST

There are plenty of hair products out there offering volume and texture, but the problem with these is that they’re formulated with typical texturising ingredients that weigh strands down. What’s more, fine hair in particular comes with its own challenges as it can’t hang on to the added body boost. So, Living Proof decided to step up to the plate and create its new Full Dry Volume & Texture Spay that not only does what it says on the can but also provides flexible hold for even more style-staying power. Perfect for the ultimate bridal updo – use it as your braid aid, messy bun hero or bouncy blowout finisher. £28, available at www.lookfantastic.com

POST-VACAY COMPLEXION

Nail the latest must-have complexion trend, faux freckles with Lottie London Freckle Tint. This favourite hack is now available in a new shade: Deep. This easy-to-apply temporary skin tint adds instant radiance to any look, just dot onto the face and blend in before setting with your favourite powder. £6.95, https://lottie.london

HERE COMES THE SUN

We all know that too much sun is damaging to the skin, so to ensure yours is on point for W-day it’s important to protect it. Dr. Hauschka’s new Tinted Face Sun Cream SPF 30 gives the face a radiantly fresh, sun-kissed glow and supports the skin’s natural defences. Using mineral UV filters that act like a mirror, it protects against the force of UV radiation and prevents light-induced skin ageing. This daytime companion is water resistant too and boasts a rich texture to gently pamper. £34, available at www.drhauschka.co.uk

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Furla continues its fragrance journey with Autentica Eau De Parfum, a beautifully romantic scent. The vibrancy of Italian mandarin together with raspberry and pear create an irresistible opening, while the softness of cherry blossom mingles with the slight spiciness of peony and freshness of lily of the valley. Then comes the secret of Autentica’s character in its base notes of patchouli, musk and cashmere wood creating a comforting sensation. £35 for 30ml, £49 for 50ml, £72 for 100ml, available at www.fenwick.co.uk

EYES ON THE PRIZE

Let your eyes do the talking on your big day with Lash Star’s Full Control Lash Sculpting Mascara (£30) and the portable 3-in-1 Heated Lash Curler (£32). Designed for pretty, perfectly sculpted lashes, the double-ended mascara boosts volume by up to 4,100% using its two formulas and brushes. Meanwhile, the innovative heated curler lifts and styles your lashes into place with gentle heat, helping to lock in that lift for longer-lasting results. Since I’ve added it to my routine, I haven’t looked back. Available at www.lashstarbeauty.com

Revolutionary U.S. skincare brand goodhabit has recently launched in the UK with a range of products that have effective, naturederived ingredients at their core. Each is created with the same goal of achieving radiant, glowing, healthy skin every day. The best news is you’ll never find microbeads, nonoparticles, parabens or phthalates in goodhabit’s formulas or any harmful ingredients at all for that matter. I love Clean Scene Micellar Gel. A rinse-free gel it whisks away both waterproof and long-wearing formulas as well as dirt, excess oil and impurities without stripping your skin of essential moisture. Gentle enough to use on your entire face, even eyes and lips, it’s also powerful enough to deliver a clean finish in a single swipe. £24, www.goodhabitskin.com 83

It really does do what it says on the bottle, rebuilding the strands for healthier-looking, glossy hair. I've used it every day for four days and can already see such a difference, the frizz is smoother, and my hair looks more wavy than unruly! It's become my new haircare essential.” – Claire Ridley

THICK AND UNRULY Viva La Moisture Shampoo (£19.99), www.salon64products.co.uk “This shampoo uses only natural, cruelty-free ingredients to help hydrate tired locks. I’ve even received a few compliments since using it.” – Melissa Barker

DULL AND FINE OGX Frizz Free + Keratin Smoothing Oil Shampoo (£5.32) and Conditioner (£5.32), www.superdrug.com “The smell of this shampoo is what does it for me, the scent lasts for days and the products leave a fantastic shine. Enriched with keratin oil, the strengthening formulas tend to brittle hair damaged by excessive heat, chemical processes or general wear and tear, so it’s perfect for the summer months ahead. A lovely product to use.” – Rachel Westall

DRY WITH SPLIT ENDS Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Prickly Pear Oil (£50), and Christophe Robin Regenerating Shampoo with Prickly Pear Oil (£31), www.christopherobin.co.uk “This regenerating duo, infused with prickly pear oil, smells fantastic. After just one use, the nourishing formulas have transformed my hair, leaving behind a shiny finish with less frizz – hallelujah! The mask worked wonders for me, and I love how you only need to wait five minutes for it to work its magic – I can be very impatient sometimes. All in all, I would highly recommend it!” – Olivia Gibson

FINE HAIR LACKING VOLUME Grow Gorgeous Volume Duo (£27), www.growgorgeous.co.uk “After rinsing the products out, my hair was left intensely soft and smooth, and instantly felt like it had more body, even when soaking wet – the Grow Gorgeous Volume Conditioner is the detangler my dreams are made of! I was careful to take my time blow drying, section by section with a barrel brush and was amazed to see that my lifeless, flat hair looked double the thickness and had a bounce to it. I genuinely cannot wait to continue using.” – Beth Morton 84

DRY AND DAMAGED Naturecan CBD Infused Coconut Shampoo (£16.99) and Conditioner (£16.99), https://uk.naturecan.com “I won’t lie, I’m a bit dubious about products containing CBD as I’ve tried moisturisers with it and honestly can’t tell the difference. However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey

SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

Nobu Hotel and Restaurant is a new property in Santorini that will open its doors in spring 2022. The restaurant houses a gastronomic experience, serving signature Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine, and the signature twolevel infinity pool offers unobstructed views of the island’s famed sunset. The luxurious rooms and villas with private pools become a haven, offering panoramic views of the impressive Caldera and the Aegean Sea. The gym, along with the fully-equipped spa room, encapsulates an oasis of wellness. Dimos Stasinopoulos, the CEO and founder of Epoque Collection, tells us: “We’re beyond excited to have an active role in the creation of the first Nobu Hotel and Restaurant in Greece, on the island of Santorini. Our cooperation with MonteRock International, a group with an international presence in the business and hospitality sector, guarantees that this project carves a new path in the way boutique hotels are perceived domestically. Hotels will not only be singled out due to brand’s name but also for its design, location, landscape, and service.” Check out www.nobuhotels.com for more information.

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! There is

a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 95
