’m going to be a bridesmaid! As you’ll have gathered, I’m giddy with excitement and couldn’t wait to share my news with you. Our dear Melissa Barker, fellow editor here at CWM, popped to the question last month asking me if I’d accept this huge honour. I’m thrilled to be taking this journey with such a dear friend and we’ll be sharing our learnings every step of the way, so don’t miss Melissa’s bridal diary and moodboard over on page 80. Even bigger news of course is something that affects us all: Boris’ roadmap out of this mess. Here at CWM HQ we were thrilled to see a plan back to wedding normality. It’ll be a slow process, but with everyone pulling together and staying safe it should mean we see our beloved weddings and wedding industry back in full force by the end of June. That in itself is cause for celebration. On that note, let’s take a look at what we’ve got for you this issue as I round up my highlights across these two pages. Enjoy and keeeep planning!

Liverpool is an oh-so cool location to tie the knot and you’ll want to make the most of it by getting out and about with your photographer. I love this shot of bride Katy in front of Akse’s mural of Jürgen Klopp on Jordan Street. Read all about her big day from page 26.

A great spot for a close-to-home romantic minimoon amongst nature. Home to a new collection of eco-sensitive cabins, Delamere Forest is set amidst the Cheshire Plain spanning 2,400 acres of broadleaf and evergreen trees. The bridesmaids’ pick

Picture January 2020, the good old days, the calm before the storm. Beth Boyle owner of Laraine Westwood, had taken a leap of faith and designed her own line of bridesmaid dresses. After being a personal shopper to bridesmaids for many years, she found herself designing around the issues often faced. But just as interest in her designs started gathering momentum, Covid put a stop to everything. Not to be disheartened Beth soon realised there was an opportunity to take the time to develop her collection and focus on her planned clothing line. So, fast forward to January 2021 and she’s now launching a made-to-order bridesmaid dress and flowergirl collection, as well as a made-to-order clothing line, and the ReMaid concept (all about redesigning bridesmaid dresses to be worn again after the wedding). She’s also found herself with a growing obsession for finding eco-friendly ways to work. Beth says, “I allow the bridal party to truly have the final say. Once a skirt shape has been picked, the neckline, sleeve, back detail and length can all be selected to create exactly what’s needed to work with the individual’s shape, size and style. Too many times a dress would have been perfect, if only a bra could be worn or it had a daring back detail or a sleeve. All these are choices for Laraine Westwood’s bridesmaids, not problems.” Find out more at www.larainewestwood.co.uk

REAL WEDDING

N

atalie and Adam became firm friends after meeting at a birthday party in their teens and started dating several years later. Adam proposed during a trip to Belfast, where they were on a pilgrimage around the various Game of Thrones filming locations. After walking miles in the wind and rain to find the very spot where Jon Snow bonded with Drogon on the cliffs of Fairhead, Adam presented Natalie with an official HBO dragon ring and popped the question. Natalie explains, “He knew I wanted to choose my own ring should we ever get engaged, so this was perfect. We were soaked and freezing but felt like we were the only two people in the world.” The decision to tie the knot in Liverpool was a natural one since the city holds so many memories for the pair. “My nan was a Scouser born and bred. She passed away in 2008 and would have been so proud of us marrying in her home town,” Natalie tells us. So, Liverpool Town Hall and The Corinthian Grand were booked for 13th April, 2019 – the one-year anniversary of “Walking into the Adam’s clifftop proposal. ceremony room Here, the bride shares her account of the was nerve-racking big day…

but exciting, it’s so intimidating having all eyes on you, but I managed to do it without falling over!”

SETTING THE SCENE

Natalie and Adam’s choice of colour palette was quite ingenious! “We chose green and white. Green because we got engaged on the Emerald Isle and White for our surname,” the bride explains. The glorious floral arrangements and bouquets romantically reflected this using white hydrangeas, ivy and gypsy grass. With a Game of Thrones theme being a must, the couple opted for themed mini bottles of liquor for wedding favours – gin, vodka, absinthe and rum. The table plan had a parchment effect to it and guests’ names were written in the Game of Thrones’ font. The place names were designed to match. Mini iron throne photo clips held the table names, all labelled in honour of castles featured in the series. The ceremony space at Liverpool Town Hall was decorated beautifully with a white flower arch, scattered white rose petals and tealight cylinders. At the reception, tables were adorned in gorgeous centrepieces featuring a combination of glass cylinders, flower-filled vases, floral crowns, and creeping ivy candelabra. These were no doubt the source of great admiration as guests dined on a starter of goat’s cheese tartlet or game slice, blade of beef or roast chicken for main, and crème brûlée or apple frangipane tart for dessert.

LOOKING THE PART Natalie looked stunning in Tate by Ronald Joyce. “It ticked all the boxes for me. After trying on several different silhouettes, I knew I wanted something backless with a high neckline and subtle embellishment,” she says. The look was completed with her nan’s engagement ring, worn on a necklace underneath her dress, a diamond bracelet gifted by her mum and Pandora earrings to match her bridesmaids’. Adam wore a grey, three-piece suit paired with silver cufflinks that his bride bought him “I think we were both as a wedding present. They tied elegantly into the theme featuring a direwolf head, nervous but excited the Stark family crest. The groomsmen at the same time.” were dressed to match and wore smaller buttonholes allowing the groom to stand out. When it came to the bridesmaids’ dresses Natalie tells us, “I found it so difficult to find the right shade of green to suit all my girls, in fact it was a bit of a nightmare. So, I changed my mind and went for a blush pink, which looked beautiful against the flowers. I’m glad as they all looked stunning and got so many compliments throughout the day.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE The hugely talented Harmony String Quartet entertained guests and played the Game of Thrones theme as Natalie walked down the aisle. Later, the newlyweds entered their reception to The Rains of Castamere, the soundtrack behind the show’s most famous scene, The Red Wedding. Natalie says, “They played so many of our favourite songs by artists including Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Sigur Rós and Guns ‘n’ Roses. They were magical to listen to.” Later in the evening a DJ played the couple’s requests, all tunes from their younger years. “We felt like teenagers again singing away on the dancefloor,” Natalie remembers.

THE GETAWAY The newlyweds jetted off to another Game of Thrones location for a three-night minimoon: Dubrovnik, Croatia. “Where else could we have honeymooned but King’s Landing?” Natalie asks. The trip was short as they didn’t want to leave their daughter for too long, but they needn’t have worried as she was off having a whale of a time at Butlin’s with her grandparents!

hey say when you know, you know and that was certainly the case for Katy and Sean. The pair clicked instantly and only a few short weeks after meeting they’d booked their first holiday together. “We both love to travel and we’ve just gone from strength to strength ever since,” Katy explains. Just over a year later, Sean took Katy to Otterspool Promenade, where they’d been on their first date and proposed in front of some fishermen. “I knew it was coming but it was still very special,” Katy remembers. The couple celebrated with a meal at the restaurant they’d also visited on that first date. The pair decided on St George’s Hall for their ceremony, a gorgeous grand location, with celebrations to follow at Love Lane Brewery, Liverpool. They were forced to downsize their day due to Covid, but Katy says, “Becky at Love Lane was brilliant at adapting around the situation and ensured all the rules were kept to.” Join us as we learn more from the bride about the big day, which took place on 18th September, 2020…

REAL WEDDING

My make-up artist was amazing, keeping us all calm. I loved having my mum, aunt and bridesmaids getting ready with me in the morning and Lisa felt like one of us. My bridesmaids were dressed in dusky pink princess-style dresses. I let them choose the style they were comfortable in and they both agreed on the same one. They also chose their own shoes, which my groom insisted on buying for them hoping they would wear them again and think of our special day.

I fell in love with my fishtail gown from the moment I tried it on. It had plenty of lace, one layer of which had a hint of blush. I also wore a lace veil, my dream pink Jimmy Choos and my wedding-morning gift of diamond necklace and earrings from my husband-to-be.

I had a crystal from the live-action version of Cinderella in my bouquet. It was given to me by a friend in the U.S. who was unable to travel to the wedding due to Covid

Our family fuses Liverpool and Moffat, Scotland together. So, weaving in little touches that acknowledged these ties, such as Sean’s custom-made cufflinks, was important.

Sean wore a three-piece navy suit with a pink tie. 27

Our photographers were amazing. They felt like two extra guests and ensured every single special moment was captured Centrepieces were rustic jars filled with flowers to match my bridal bouquet.

Covid rules made post-ceremony celebrations quite a challenge, but between photographs, speeches, canapés and the wedding breakfast we managed to stay busy. We played The Wedding Shoe Game that mum organised. This went down extremely well and got plenty of laughs.

“The table plan was themed around Liverpool landmarks, with each table named after an iconic building.”

We were able to select a Liverpool-themed welcome cocktail to serve our guests on arrival. Love Lane was also able to meet my request of serving pink Bollinger champagne for the toasts despite it not normally being on the menu. 28

Our big-day bake had two tiers, one chocolate and one vanilla. It was decorated in blooms to complement our floral displays.

Our favours were mini bottles of Moffat Whisky and Liverpool Gin.

REAL WEDDING

Our wedding song was a country song called Die A Happy Man by Thomas Rhett, perfect for our 2020 wedding with lyrics like “I don’t need no vacation, no fancy destination,” and “If all I got is your hand in my hand, baby I could die a happy man.”

We also had a Happily Ever After neon sign to reflect my love of Disney.

Love Lane was incredible. All our guests raved about the beer, cocktails, food and service. The team did everything they possibly could to ensure the day went off with a bang. We were able to go into the brewery for some photos, which for my craft beer-obsessed husband was incredible.

The day couldn’t have gone any better than it did, against all the Covid odds. It was everything we’ve always dreamed of and more. It really was the best day ever.

espite initially giving David the cold shoulder when he pursued her at university, Megan did feel the attraction too. Luckily, David is a persistent chap and eventually his determination paid off. “We were drawn to each other by an inexplicable energy, like magnets,” Megan explains. Not long after they started dating, Megan took up a fantastic job opportunity in Dubai, and it only took David a month to realise he couldn’t live without her, following her out there. They lived happily in the UAE together for many years

before returning home to the UK to settle and tie the knot. David proposed during their time in Dubai. He took Megan up Jebel Jais, the country’s highest peak, and at sunset got down on one knee to pop the question. “It was a complete surprise to me, but an amazing one of course,” Megan remembers. The date was set for 12th July, 2019 at Thornton Manor. Here, the bride shares her treasured memories of the gorgeous wedding…

As we lived in Dubai for many years and it means so much to us, we decided to name all our tables after our favourite places there. We dined on a threecourse wedding breakfast and enjoyed fish and chip cones in the evening.

I wore Diva by Naama & Anat. I tried on around 100 dresses all over the world, but this one stood out. It had glamorous sparkle, with a backless mesh and a shape that complemented by figure.

You’ll love this effortlessly elegant styling with a nod to yesteryear Images courtesy of Keyhole Studios Muted tones of the Edwardian era, dramatic photography and a modern rustic twist characterise this elegant shoot. “We wanted to show that your wedding venue can be transformed into whatever you want it to be,” explains shoot coordinator Joanne Fenna of Bliss Wedding Shows. “We had our wedding flowers done by Bookers! Absolutely gorgeous! Could not have been happier with them! - Helen Marteau

I have had a life-long love affair with flowers, working in the florist industry for over 25 years. However, I don’t have a rule book. I believe that floral art is a natural talent, with no boundaries. I love working with my clients, getting to know them, their personalities and vision - whether it be quirky, rustic, traditional or glamourous. In short, I love to create floral magic. My aim as a floral artist, is to enable my clients to feel confident that they are in safe hands. When your guests step into a room, I want them to gasp and have their breath taken away. My aim for you is to create a wow factor that will leave long lasting memories, even when your special day is over.

15 showstopping and creative ways to use flowers in your wedding

Louise Dawson of Boujee Boxes says, “We love to incorporate boxes of all sizes and designs into our bespoke weddings. These may be hat boxes, metal, open frames, glass cubes, acrylic plinths and more. When used as a centrepiece they’re easy to gift to guests at the end of the night.”

UNDERNEATH THE ARCHES

Ceremony and moon arches are growing in popularity, symbolising the home you’ll create together and offering a beautiful backdrop to proceedings and photos. When decorated with flowers they become truly special. Gemma Wakerley of Booker Flowers & Gifts says, “Wallmounted hoops can also be used as a floating display for photo opportunities.”

3THANK YOU

Louise says, “What about incorporating flowers into your bespoke gifts for brides, bridesmaids, mums or even the best man? They’re great alongside a bottle of bubbly and a special gift.” https:// philipantrobusphotography.co.uk for Booker Flowers & Gifts

4CROWNING GLORY

With a whimsical feel flower crowns are the staple of bohemian weddings, with dried flowers now making a splash. Gemma says, “Delicate and dainty or blousy and full they’re an excellent way to celebrate with flowers and colour.” If your style is more traditional though, ask your hair stylist to tuck a few blooms into your up do for a softer alternative to a hair accessory.

5BUTTONHOLES

Don’t forget the gents when planning your flowers. Buttonholes are a great way to tie the wedding party together thematically and can help the groom stand out with a showstopping variation. This rustic vintage version by Flowers at the Dutch Barn ties in perfectly with the groom’s tweed suit. 47 

Flower walls offer a breathtaking focal point for the top table and a background for the speeches. Reposition later as a backdrop to your guests’ super-fun red-carpet arrival style shots.

8SELF-RAISING FLOWER

Decorating your big-day bake with blooms to match your arrangements ties it together nicely with the rest of your styling. If you’re nervous about using fresh flowers, why not ask your cake-maker to replicate them in sugar paste or adorn the cake table with an arrangement transferred from the ceremony?

9PEW COMPLETE ME

Sweet little posies of flowers tied to pew ends in a church or aisle ends in your venue’s ceremony space are a lovely finishing touch. Alternatively, to achieve the romantic feel of walking through a fragrant meadow towards your intended, opt for something more substantial such as these beauties by Flowers at the Dutch Barn, which can be transported to the reception space after the ceremony.

CHAT 10CHIT

At a banquetingstyle reception with long tables a floral runner laid down the centre makes a gorgeous alternative to traditional centrepieces, and means guests can be sociable. If you’re sitting at round tables however, you can still ensure unimpeded chit chat by opting for raised arrangements with clear bases like this one by Booker Flowers & Gifts, which almost looks like it’s floating. 48

Probably the first thing that springs to mind when we think of wedding flowers, and the most traditional. Your bouquet is a way to reflect your personality by choosing your favourite blooms and those that hold special meaning to you. Reflect your theme and the season by carefully selecting the style from free and easy meadow to formal glamour. We love these creations by Boujee Boxes and Flowers at the Dutch Barn.

13HANG ABOUT!

If you don’t have room for table centres or need to fill a vast overhead space consider a hanging floral installation. Totally on trend and a fabulous focal point. These foliage versions by Flowers at the Dutch Barn make ingenious use of the festoon lighting cables.

Boujee Boxes

Boujee Boxes

For long tables using small vases or jars filled with flowers is a supercute way to go. Pack each vase with an array of different blooms or create a repeat pattern of vases each containing a posy of one feature flower as per these delightful arrangements by Flowers at the Dutch Barn.

YOU CAN 12CORSAGE

Boujee Boxes

Corsages offer a great bouquet alternative for your bridesmaids, bringing a little something different. They’re also a great way to make mum feel more involved in the bridal party, with a design to complement your bouquet.

15GO FOR BROKE

Tall centrepieces can look top heavy, so try decorating the base. Think floating candles and flower heads in vases of varying heights grouped with small floral arrangements, votive candles and flower heads dotted in between. Simply stunning.

14BE SEATED

Add some floral fascination to your place names. Let your theme guide you to a choice of rose head or sprig of foliage, lavender or pampas grass – all offer a gorgeous finishing touch making your guests feel extra special.

HOT TOPIC Stellar wedmin advice from those in the know

MUSIC FOR THE SOUL How can we incorporate live music into our ceremony to make it even more meaningful? One wonderful way is to walk down the aisle towards your beloved to the sound of a cello playing your special song. It’s an instrument with an incredibly beautiful and emotive sound, perfect for this moment. There won’t be a dry eye in the house! Then, after the “I dos,” to avoid a lull in proceedings for your guests as you sign the register, have your cellist play music that reflects your mutual interests before you walk out as husband and wife to your favourite upbeat song. The live acoustic of a cello can perfectly and romantically create your personalised, meaningful musical moment. Claire Thackeray | CelloUna www.cellouna.com

A BLANK CANVAS Hiring a marquee seemed like a good idea, but now we’re feeling overwhelmed by the vast blank space to fill. Where do we start? Don’t worry – part of the reason you booked the marquee was because you loved the space. You don’t need to fill every part of it. Think about the different elements of your wedding: where are the key areas and how do you want to use them? Making a feature of your top table or sweetheart table by adding a backdrop or arch can give a focal point to the room. Adding dressings such as flowers and lights to some of the marquee’s features such as poles or wires can also help to create the look you want, while breaking down the space and softening the structure. Amanda Nelson Wachadoin Events www.wachadoin.events

SWEET TOOTH We love the idea of a wedding cake as a showstopping centrepiece, but neither of us are keen on sponge. Is there an alternative? Why not try a different filling? You could always take the more traditional route with a fruit cake, rich with spices and bursting with flavour. Or follow the lead of one of my couples who’ll be celebrating with an Irish chocolate biscuit cake in honour of the bride’s heritage. Based on the classic chocolate tiffin, the cake is iced and could be used as a single tier of your design or for the whole cake. Alternatively, you could consider a twist on tradition and opt for a macaron tower, providing an unusual and beautiful centrepiece with the opportunity to incorporate a combination of different flavours such as salted caramel, raspberry, pistachio, coffee, vanilla, chocolate or honey. There are so many possibilities! You can choose to have your macarons all one colour, include hand-painted details, or even opt for a multi-shade ombré effect running up the height of the tower. ON PAPER How can we tailor our stationery to suit our barn venue rustic theme?

http://andrewab.photography

I love to take inspiration from the venue, it’s always a great way of tying everything together. While it’s lovely to have a colour to bind your theme, I love it when the stationery is used to bring an extra element into the decor on the day, and I often do this using illustration. I also love to use materials which reflect the venue, and the rustic barn styling is perfect for this. For example, the venue’s alpacas were the inspiration for the stationery pictured and I emphasised the rustic theme using natural twine, hessian wraps, wood-grain papers and kraft envelopes. All items were printed on a nice quality 100 per cent recycled board and the autumnal colours referenced the time of year. Like the contrast between the wedding decor and a barn venue’s walls, I like the unusual twist of adding crystals to kraft board. It’s reminiscent of fairylights twinkling against a rough wall. My overall advice though would be to keep it simple and keep it green. Ling Warlow | Dragonfly Couture Stationery www.paperbydragonfly.com

BE OUR GUEST We’d like to have a guestbook as a memento of our day, but they’re such a chore for guests to do. How can we make it fun for them? I’ve lost count of how many guest books I’ve seen containing only a handful of comments. The happy couple are so busy enjoying their day they don’t usually notice it’s empty until they see it afterwards and the disappointment is real. You can’t really blame your nearest and dearest as it’s so difficult to know what to say. At the end of the day, there’s only so many times you want to read, “You look absolutely fabulous” or, “Health, wealth and happiness to you both.” That’s why we supply a beautiful complimentary guest book with our photo booths. For every snap taken, our booth prints an extra copy, which is then stuck into the book by our attendant and its subjects are asked to write a comment alongside while they wait for their own prints. In our experience, guests are much more willing to contribute as they’re having fun and actually have something to comment on. In fact, we find that these are so popular they’re usually filled by the end of the night providing a fun-filled and happy memento for the newlyweds. Kim Shaw | Premier Photo Booths www.premierphotobooths.co.uk

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU We’ve waited so long to get married due to the pandemic and are now rethinking our registrar-led ceremony in favour of something more meaningful. What would you recommend? This sounds like a great idea! A celebrant in England and Wales writes and performs a non-legal wedding ceremony. It’s written entirely for you, so there’ll be no other like it. You can ask friends and family to take part as well, making it that much more meaningful. The legal admin side of your marriage can be sorted out with a couple of short visits to the registry office, so no worries there. Your celebrant should meet with you to find out more about you both and what you envisage for your wedding. They’ll use this information to structure and write a script, which you should be able to check along the way. Most celebrants will also help you create your own vows. Q&A Look your big-day best with advice from our professionals

WILD CHILD

My hair is curly and rather unruly. How can I ensure it's looking it's best for W-day? Cassie says: Curly and unruly is actually one of the easiest hair types to manage with the correct products used for certain styles. Medium hold smoothing creams and frizz controllers are perfect to tame the locks and offer a more smooth and defined curl. A liquid hair spray is also a great alternative for holding curls in and it’s much better than an aerosol equivalent for this hair type. Embrace those curls ladies!

Andrews by Pronovias

A TOUCH OF CLASS

I’m looking for a gown that’s classic and timeless. What style and designers would you suggest as being a good fit for me? Hanni says: There are so many gorgeous, classic and timeless gowns available at the moment, whether you want a beautiful ballgown or a fitted silhouette. We’d suggest looking for classic necklines like strapless, off-the-shoulder, simple straps or even long fitted sleeves. Remember, you can add sleeves or straps later, so try to keep an open mind when trying on different styles. Also, try fabrics that’ll never date such as silk, crepe, satin, Mikado or an Italian-style lace. If you’ve a high-end budget to play with, look to Pronovias. The designer is the global leader in bridalwear for a reason. It works with the most incredible fabrics, bringing a modern edge to classic silhouettes. Signature styles range from dramatic ballgowns to ethereal romantic looks. For more modest budgets, Spanish designer Luna Novias offers delicate, flowing and classic gowns in a wealth of fabrics and textures, perfect for the contemporary bride. Designs feature sweetheart necklines, stunning V-backs and beautiful bodices sprinkled with Chantilly lace and beaded appliques. Our top timeless styles for the spring/summer 2021 season are Andrews, Farrah and Geraldine by Pronovias, or Yumei and Yoshiro by Luna Novias.

THE NEWBIE

I don't normally wear make-up. What looks, shades and products might suit me for my big day? Olivia says: Don’t worry, this is a question we often get asked. We always like to ensure that a bridal look is simply an enhancement of your natural features. There’s nothing worse than wearing make-up and suddenly feeling like a different person. Start by wearing a foundation shade that matches your natural skin tone to give an even, flawless complexion. Neutral or bronze tones work best for the eyes, finished with a short natural-looking set of lashes to open them up and make them pop. The thought of false eyelashes might make you feel apprehensive if you’re not used to them, but as long as you choose the right style to suit your eye shape, they can offer a stunning finishing touch. Finally, finish your natural look with a cool-toned lipstick and gloss. All of our brides get a complimentary bride survival kit included in their bridal package, so there’s no need to worry about whether you have the right shade to touch up your lippy during the day.

SILKY SMOOTH

I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my supercute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

MAKING

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks

70

INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute. If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their bigday, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.

A

ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs event-ready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.

Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere. What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb. How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day? I would say, start with the neckline of your

desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos. What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day. How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together. What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too. For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk

What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 71

Wedding wellness

The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com

#FRESHSTART Bored with hot water and lemon in the morning? Then maybe it’s time for a Fresh Start with Pukka’s newest caffeine-free organic tea. Expertly blended with sustainablysourced organic herbs, delicious zesty organic lemon and warming aromatic fennel seeds, it gently awakens your body and mind to a new day helping you feel your brightest self. What’s more, this stimulating yet soothing blend helps to strengthen the digestive system to support optimum metabolism. Priced at £2.99 for 20 sachets, it’s available at https://uk.pukkaherbs.com, and from health food stores and supermarkets across the land.

Find it at www.espaskincare.com 72

#ThePowerOfSleep Given the trials of the last year, looking after ourselves at home has never been more important, so to help with this endeavour, The Somerset Toiletry Company has created a collection of gifts to promote self-care and wellness and we’re all about its Sleepeze range. After all, the importance of sleep when it comes to ultimate wellbeing can never be underestimated, it’s crucial for body and mind. The Sleepeze Calming Gift Set, £9.95, includes a silky eye mask, pillow mist, and essential oil-based rollerball. Then there’s the Calming Sleep Stones, £11.95 – 200g of volcanic rock infused with essential oils to enhance your night-time routine. Finally, in the collection is the Calming Bath Salts, £4.95, perfect for washing away that build up of daily stress before bed. Treat yourself at www.thesomersettoiletryco.co.uk

#SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com

Sark is the smallest of the Channel Islands and considered the jewel of them all. Already famous for several things; its unspoilt beauty, for having no cars and for being the world’s first Dark Skies Island, it now welcomes a new attraction. The tiny island is celebrating the imminent launch of its first community dairy. From this June, no trip to this stunning rural island hideaway will be complete without meeting the 16 stunning Guernsey dairy cows, seeing the dairy parlour in action and picking up treats from the shop. At the helm are dairy farmers Jason and Katharine Salisbury, who, with 20 years’ experience of looking after Channel Island dairy cows in Suffolk, harboured a longheld dream of running their own small artisanal farm in Sark. From 80 applicants worldwide the Salisburys bagged their dream job, combining authentic dairy farming with providing a delightful destination where you can visit and be charmed. The island enjoys a variety of accommodation options from glamping to luxury hotels and everything in between. For self-catering the beautiful Clos a Joan rental cottages are a must-visit (www.sarkholidaycottages.co.uk) or, for a touch of honeymoon luxury, check out Stocks Hotel (www.stockshotel.com). Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

L

ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on

Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and over-budgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.

THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers 80

and budget, we began the exciting part – looking at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

BRIDE’S DIARY

Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.

Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.

Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.

We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.

Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!

This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 81
