YOUR ESSENTIALS

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

Kevin and Carole, the successful husband and wife team behind Kevin Brown Photography are set to celebrate their 15th year photographing weddings. Their combined life experiences have made them a popular choice for hundreds of happy couples and have seen them go from strength to strength. Kevin became hooked on photography after a friend, having recognised his passion and keen eye for the art, asked him to capture his wedding day back in 2006. He tells us about the next move: “After several years photographing weddings down South, I relocated up North to my hometown and Kevin Brown Photography was launched.” Carole fell in love with the wedding industry after accompanying Kevin to many a beautiful venue up and down the country. Her experience as an estate agent helped with her attention to detail and led her to become an excellent photographer in her own right. One of the highlights of the last few years for Kevin was photographing Carole’s daughter’s wedding – “Carole wasn’t allowed to pick up a camera that day,” he says. “Not only was the wedding featured in Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding, it also got the front cover,” he continues (issue 46). We hope you’ll join us in congratulating this lovely pair on their milestone business anniversary. We wish you many more successful years. To find out more head over to www.kevinbrownphotography.co.uk

STAY SAFE

Thornton Manor Estate on the Wirral hopes to trial a pioneering approach to save the wedding industry with a new 15-minute Covid screening approach for staff and wedding guests. The venue has already invested in these testing kits, similar to those due to be trialled in Liverpool, which will help to ensure everyone entering the venue is free of the virus. Any guest or staff member who tests positive would be sent home immediately to self-isolate. Thornton Manor, a Grade II listed building, the creation of William Lever, is set amongst 120 acres of exquisite gardens and lakeside woodland. This exclusive wedding venue includes the historical manor house and three marquees, offering an exceptional range of enchanting locations for wedding ceremonies and celebrations. Head over to www.thorntonmanor.co.uk to discover more.

LASTING LOVE

Ling Warlow of Merseyside-based wedding stationer Dragonfly Couture, has been hard at work developing a new product line for her lovely couples. She tells us, “Paper flowers are a fabulous alternative to the real thing. Not only are they locally made form recyclable materials, rather than flown in from the other side of the world, but they last forever, leaving a fabulous memento of the big day.” What’s more, opting for these little beauties also means you can still get your favourite blooms whether they're in season at the right time of year for you or not! We’re obsessed with these already. Find out more at www.dragonflycouturestationery.com

THINK BIG

Q Hotels is launching its Little Big Wedding concept, appealing to couples to enjoy their nuptials in early 2021 and make the celebration a wow experience with help from the hotel group. Participating hotels, which include Crewe Hall and The Park Royal, both in Cheshire, will gift their happy couples with plenty of add-ons making celebrations more exciting and memorable. Sarah Harvey, head of events at the QHotels Group says, “Every wedding is big to us. Who says size matters?” She continues, “Our Little Big Wedding concept is extra special and gives everyone who books with us the chance to go a bit bigger on their plans at no extra cost.” So what does this all mean? Well, those choosing a traditional fourcourse wedding breakfast will enjoy a complimentary half bottle of wine per table; reception celebrations with afternoon tea will be gifted unlimited scones and tea; and all packages will receive free arrival drinks, as well as for the speeches with canapés throughout. “This is us being little on costs and big on ideas. Give us your intimate wedding, and we’ll give you back the big event you always dreamed of with so much love and care,” Sarah concludes. 5 MINUTES WITH…

Celebrant Sarah Nelson of Merseyside-based Moments To Please tell us about yourself. I began my career as an English teacher, and while there were a lot of brilliant days, most of them were taken up marking. I wanted to use my knowledge of English literature in a more creative way, and that’s when I heard about becoming a celebrant. There are no second chances when it comes to conducting a wedding ceremony, so I made sure I trained fully. Now, I get to meet amazing couples and create joyous and fun ceremonies for them. Why should couples opt for a celebrant over a registrar? Registrars have a specific job to do and a tight schedule to do it in. They also have to use a specific ceremony script, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that your ceremony will sound pretty much like everyone else’s. You may well be fine with that, but if something more unique is for you, given you’ve handpicked everything else for your day, then a celebrant is the way to go. We use information about how you met, your hopes and dreams, your quirks, hobbies, favourite songs and even pets to write a ceremony just for you. As an added bonus, we’re not constrained by time or venue, so if you want to say “I do” at dawn on a mountaintop or in a forest at midnight a celebrant can do that for you. What advice would you give to couples uncertain about the future of their wedding in light of the ever-changing Covid situation? ❤ Remember why you’re getting married. It’s about the two of you first and foremost. ❤ If you can still have your venue and ceremony, albeit with a reduced guest list – do it. ❤ If you’ve culled several large forests sending and resending save-the-date cards, stop. Get an appointment for a simple ceremony with a registrar and get married. Plan the real showstopper with all the trimmings and a celebrant-led ceremony once the vaccine is rolled out. A classical and elegant venue, which can be hired for exclusive use when also booking an evening reception there, it provides a radiant choice of cosy and vintage-themed spaces for you to utilise for your big day. Then, once the night has drawn to a close, rest your head in one of 26 fabulous bedrooms.

There are four areas suitable for ceremonies, which can accommodate anywhere between two and 110 guests. The Games Room, for example, can host 25. But if you’re looking to take over the whole place, the Main Bar makes for a beautiful spot for 110 guests to witness you tying the knot. When it comes to the reception, there’s something for everyone here, whether you’re looking for an intimate meal for 22 in the Games Room, a cosy candlelight supper in the Library for 40 or the vintage backdrop of the Garden Room for 50. With exclusive use up to 120 guests can enjoy a meal for 230 for an evening reception. What’s more, if you have youngsters on the guest list, they’ll love the new bespoke play area, which is complete with a real tractor and their parents can chill in the outside bar, The Hut.

GROSVENOR PULFORD HOTEL & SPA

01244 570 560 | www.grosvenorpulfordhotel.co.uk From the opulent reception with its feature chandelier to the super-stylish design of 75 bedrooms, this four-star hotel represents the height of modern elegance. The impressive red-brick exterior of the original building dates back to the late 19th-century, and the hotel’s abundance of character comes from its rich heritage, which links back to the Grosvenor estate of the Duke of Westminster. The wonderfully romantic grounds include the beautiful Asian 20

Sensory Garden, the picturesque lake with a quaint wooden bridge and the charming thatched gazebo, all set against a backdrop of the charming Cheshire countryside. The Grosvenor Suite is a grand and opulent space for your vows and celebrations, with capacity for 200 guests. On the other hand, the Belgrave and the Westminster Suites are both recently refurbished and offer you two options for more intimate “I dos” and evening revelries. They can both accommodate 50 guests. Along with the Grosvenor Suite, these spaces can be transformed from day to night with twinkling fairylights, love letters and whimsical blossom trees, as you choose. Alternatively, The Lakeside Gazebo is an ideal spot for romantic al fresco nuptials in the warmer months.

CRABWALL MANOR HOTEL & SPA

01244 851 666 | www.legacy-hotels.co.uk On the outskirts of historic Chester city centre, the Crabwall Manor Hotel & Spa is surrounded by 11 acres of beautiful gardens and countryside. With ample land, there’s even a helipad for a truly spectacular wedding entrance! The gardens, which boast an array of trees and plants, guarantee an evergreen feel all year round. This 17th-century, Grade II listed country manor is full of charm and character with a romantic castellated façade and an open terraced area. The traditional and timeless décor is reflected throughout, with some stunning original features, plus a recent

refurbishment has introduced some more modernstyle bedrooms. Ceremonies take place in The Conservatory, which boasts plenty of natural daylight with views towards the gardens. It has capacity for 100 guests. The Lyle Suite is also an option for more intimate “I dos” accompanied by 50 loved ones. It’s just off the impressive Gallery walkway in the manor house and has a large ornate mirror as its focal point. Finally, for the vows, there’s the Jacob Suite, available for 20 of your nearest and dearest. It’s ideal if you prefer to say your vows outside first, then come inside to perform the legal part. The Conservatory and Lyle Suite are also available for your reception with capacities of 100 and 30 respectively. The latter can also be used in conjunction with The Conservatory to host the buffet service or evening entertainments such as a casino.

ROOKERY HALL HOTEL & SPA

01270 610 016 | www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/rookeryhall Built in 1816, this country house has striking gothic features such as mullioned, arched windows, enchanting carved pillars and detailed stonework, and the French chateau style tower provides a stunning focal point as you approach. Effortlessly combining the old with the new, the original hall has an intricate tile mosaic floor, traditional wood-panelled lounge and a stunning Georgian staircase, perfect for dramatic wedding shots. Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa is set within in 38 acres of lush Cheshire countryside and is reached by a long, private, tree-lined drive. The outdoor terrace has romantic views of a lawn fountain, set within manicured gardens – a beautiful setting for open-air reception drinks. The Wardle Suite with its floor-to-ceiling windows is filled with

natural light, and has access to the outdoor terrace – it can host 120 guests for your ceremony. The Garden Pavilion also offers a magical setting for your al fresco vows with 140 guests. Head into the Worleston Suite post ceremony, when the Wardle Suite’s partition is removed. It can then accommodate 160 diners and 250 guests for the evening bash. You’re treated to a complimentary executive bedroom on the night of your wedding, as well as a private room for a full traditional breakfast for the residential wedding party the following morning. REAL WEDDINGS

H

annah met Mike on a night out with friends and thought he was good looking as soon as she clapped eyes on him. “We got chatting after too many double vodka and Diet Cokes and ended up exchanging numbers. The rest is history,” she tells us. “Mike and I are polar opposites in personality, but we just seem to work well together,” she continues. The pair began to discuss the topic of marriage in earnest around six years later and within a couple of months were looking for engagement rings. “I chose the ring so that Mike could go back later to buy it once he’d decided how and when to propose,” she explains. He opted for Ladies Day at Aintree races, already one of Hannah’s favourite annual events. The first race came and went and Hannah was determined to quickly get some food before the next. “Kudos to Mike for instead persuading me to have our photo taken on the balcony of our stand overlooking the winning post,” she says. It was here that he popped the question. “It was the best win I had that day,” Hannah laughs. The couple are from Crosby and were keen to have a Catholic church ceremony in their own parish. The beautiful St Joseph’s was the gorgeous setting of choice, surrounded by greenery and just a stone’s throw from Crosby beach. Hannah had dreamt of getting married there since childhood. For the reception they’d provisionally booked another venue before visiting Titanic Hotel, “But that was forgotten as soon as we saw the West Bay function room,” Hannah remembers. She continues: “It captured the history of our amazing city with a sophisticated and modern feel. We were so grateful for the way our wedding coordinator at the hotel handled our changes due to the pandemic restrictions. Every effort was made to ensure our day was perfect, which was very much appreciated.” Join us as the beautiful bride shares more details of their special day…

SETTING THE SCENE With a plum colour palette in mind Hannah and Mike set about enlisting help to style their big day and Red Events Creative was chosen to provide the venue décor. The expert supplier adorned the space in fairylights, centrepieces of silver candelabras, lanterns decorated with beautiful plum and lilac blooms, white chair covers with plum sashes, and a pretty moongate with green foliage and hanging tea lights, which served as the backdrop to the cheese cake. The lovely flowers were provided by a local Crosby supplier, Flowerbox. Hannah’s bouquet featured roses, freesia, lisianthus and gypsophila in lilac, cream and white. “After the wedding we gave my bouquet to my 98-year-old nan who lives in a local care home and was therefore unable to attend. It was nice to be able to include her somehow,” Hannah tells us. The tables were named after locations in Liverpool: Anthony Gormley’s Another Place, Liver Building, Anfield and Goodison. The couple took photos of themselves at each place and used these as table numbers for a personal touch. The menus and seating plan were appropriately selected from Tatty Lashes’ ‘In Our Liverpool Home’ range, and place names were purchased from Etsy to be stuck in wine corks. The family made a valiant effort in drinking enough bottles of wine to supply enough corks for the original guest list, even though they weren’t all needed in the end! “Mike and I aren’t huge cake people, so we decided on a cheese cake quite early on – there’s nothing better than cheese and crackers after a few drinks,” Hannah says. They visited Birkdale Cheese Company for a tasting and the team there helped them make their selections for a showstopping wedding (cheese) cake. For the favours the pair bought miniature bottles to fill with pink 23 

REAL WEDDINGS gin and label with “we tied the knot, now take a shot” stickers. Hannah remembers, “It was a simple plan but my parents’ dining room smelt like a distillery by the time we were finished! I was glad we only had 15 to do rather than the original 95.”

LOOKING THE PART Hannah kept an open mind when it came to the all-important dress. She noticed that Boutique Brides of Crosby was holding a Ronald Joyce trunk show and thought this would be a good place to start. “I fell in love with the first dress I tried on. It wasn’t anything I thought I’d ever go for, but it suited me perfectly,” she says. Hannah had selected Celine, an ivory off-the-shoulder, A-line with a full skirt cinched at the waist. She paired the gown with a midheel shoe from Phase Eight, which she was happy to have lasted all day in, but wisely came prepared with a pair of sparkly cream trainers for dancing. Although sadly, these didn’t get the outing that was intended for them due to Covid restrictions on music and dancing. Mike wore a blue suit from Next, as did his groomsmen and the fathers. They were all three-piece, but the groom paired his with a different coloured waistcoat to stand out as the man of the hour. All of the gents completed their look with plum ties and pocket squares, and Hannah gifted Mike cufflinks and a tie clip engraved with their initials. Finally, not allowing Covid to compromise style, Mike wore a face mask to match his suit. Hannah knew she wanted her best girls to wear the same shade of plum and gave the choice of two beautiful styles – a one shoulder or a sleeveless with a cowl back. “All three preferred the latter, which looked great on them,” Hannah shares.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Since the DJ had to be cancelled due to pandemic-related music restrictions, Hannah and Mike put together their own playlist, which played softly in the background while they ate. “We entered the room to One Day Like This by Elbow and had our first dance to Follow Me, Follow You by Genesis. Only we were able to dance, but it was still special,” the bride tells us. The newlyweds and their guests were able to make use of the hotel’s VIP lounge for table service drinks until the 10pm curfew in groups of six. “It meant we were able to chat to all of our guests and enjoy their company rather than just through Zoom, as had been the case in the preceding months,” Hannah says.

LOVE IN THE MIDST OF CHAOS Hannah tells us about the rollercoaster of emotions they experienced replanning and hosting their big day in the midst of a global crisis: “We started planning our wedding 18 months ahead and were filled with grand ideas about what we wanted our day to be. However, the stress of replanning under such difficult circumstances was horrible. Our guest list was cut from 95 to 30, then two weeks beforehand down to 15. All enjoyment had gone from the process and we just wanted the day over with, which was really sad. “In hindsight though, stress aside, we wouldn’t have had our day any other way and made sure it still stayed true to us as a couple. We were waved into the church by friends and family who couldn’t attend and we were overwhelmed by the support shown. Everyone was willing our day to go ahead, as it was something to bring joy. Plus, we were able to enjoy our guests’ company as well as having time to reflect, just the two of us.” The newlyweds are planning to host their evening party next year, around the time of their first anniversary, with loved ones from their original guest list all in attendance. We wish them every happiness. 25 

arla and Chris were both working in the brasserie at the Crowne Plaza Liverpool when they met. They swiftly became close friends, but this didn’t evolve into a date until years down the line. Chris proposed to Karla on her 31st birthday for which he’d booked a romantic getaway to Ullswater in the Lake District. He picked a stunning spot in front of Aira Force Waterfall to get down on one knee, completely surprising Karla with this perfect end to their lovely weekend. Read on as we get the lowdown on the couple’s wedding day from the bride herself…

The gardens at Abbeywood Estate are beautiful and by the time we’d seen the rooms in the house, we’d fallen in love with it. We didn’t need to look at any more.

We gifted our male guests with honey jars as wedding favours, and our female guests with candles. We also gave the children personalised activity packs.

We were both feeling fine until I approached the aisle and then my legs started to shake. I became really emotional and struggled to get my words out! For our place names we sourced Scrabble tiles and ordered some stands online. My parents kindly assembled them all for us.

I designed the table plan and names myself and then got them professionally printed. 30

Dinky Bakes made our delicious wedding cake.

Chris wore a suit from Groom paired with a checked waistcoat and theme-fitting lilac cravat. The groomsmen wore the same suits as Chris, but accessorised theirs with green cravats and navy waistcoats, except the best man who wore a cravat to complement the groom’s. The catering by Benjamin Lauren was exceptional! Plus, the pizza from Wood Fire Smoke in Wilmslow was the perfect addition to our evening buffet.

We also had a cheese cake from The Cheese Yard in Knutsford

The style of my dress wasn’t anything like I’d imagined wearing, but I fell in love with it and knew it was the one as soon as I put it on. 31

“Our top tip? Plan together. Plan early.”

I had four bridesmaids. Two wore lilac dresses while the little ones wore light green. They all had lace tops.

Our day was perfect from start to finish, from beautiful weather to precious time spent with friends and family. We couldn’t have asked for anything else.

Leos Strings played during our ceremony and drinks reception, and the brilliant Marc Kenny sang in the evening as well as performing a DJ set.

We went to Italy for two weeks on honeymoon. We spent the first week in Amalfi and the second in Sorrento. We planned it together and visited so many wonderful places as well as spending relaxing days on the beach.

A friendship blossomed straight away and they started dating a few years later, by which time James was working in a cocktail bar – queue for a song? A B C E D Your A-Z guide to wedding entertainment

IS FOR ACOUSTIC Nothing creates a romantic atmosphere quite like the sounds of an acoustic musician. Guitar, piano, you name it, music unplugged is the way to go from ceremony, to drinks reception and wedding breakfast. We suggest pianist and composer, Andrea Lamballe. Check out www.andrealamballe.co.uk

IS FOR DJ We recommend meeting with your DJ prior to the big day, whether that be face to face or virtually. They’ll need to understand your musical tastes and your guest list to get a feel for the floor fillers needed. Why not send out a request form with your RSVPs to guarantee popular playlist? Check out @prestigeweddingevents

IS FOR BAND Bring the elation and exuberance of a gig to your celebrations with a live band. Many will even go to the extra trouble of learning your song especially for your first dance. Dancefloor full, guaranteed. Check out www.thegroovemembership.com

F

IS FOR CASINO Fear not, your guests aren’t in danger of gambling away their life savings! These games, including roulette, blackjack and more, are purely for fun. We suggest www.funcasino-royale.co.uk

IS FOR EXTRAS Whether it be a basket of blankets so guests can chill out and chat in your venue’s gardens when the sun goes down, or a box of flip flops to soothe those dancing feet, your loved ones will appreciate any added extras to keep them comfortable.

IS FOR FIREWORKS What could be more memorable than ending the day with a bang? A sure-fire way to wow your guests and a further opportunity for spectacular photos.

IS FOR GLITTER You can never go far wrong with a dab of sparkle. Add a festival-vibe to your celebrations with a glitter bar for blinged-up beards and glistening cheekbones. IS FOR JIG Ceilidhs are so much fun they should be illegal! A great way to get all ages hitting the dancefloor for hours of fun and giggles.

IS FOR INFLATABLES Brilliant fun for children and adults alike, why not hire a wedding-white bouncy castle. Check out www.inflatablebouncycastles.co.uk

IS FOR KIDS Keep your mini guests occupied all day with a craft table, or enlist the help of a professional wedding creche company who’ll make sure they’re all safe and having a whale of a time with a whole parade of super-fun activities.

IS FOR LESSONS For a first dance with a difference book yourselves some lessons and perform a choreographed routine to surprise your guests.

N

P

IS FOR NOSTALGIA Make the most of your venue’s grounds and lay out some vintage garden games. Croquet, giant Jenga, Connect4, hoopla and hooka-duck. Your guests will have so much fun while they wait for the wedding breakfast they’ll barely notice their tummies rumble.

IS FOR PHOTO BOOTH Once booked, never regretted! Goofy times from hours of propfilled fun in a photo booth, or in front of a selfie mirror, make for a hilarious guest book that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear for years to come. We suggest www.shimmerandblush.com

IS FOR HARP Harp music at a wedding is the ultimate romantic touch offering relaxing background music. Southport-based Susan Lambert is professional harpist performing at wide variety of venues from open air to castles and everywhere in between, and has even appeared on the BBC. Find out more at www.weddingharp.co.uk

IS FOR MAGICIAN The perfect icebreaker, a magician will get your guests engaging with each other through a shared experience, ensuring plenty of amazed faces. We suggest close-up magician Dave Hooper, otherwise known as The Magic 1. Performing for more than 25 years he’s developed his own inimitable style of magic. You and your loved ones will witness his incredible tricks up close and won’t believe your own eyes – certainly a talking point that’ll continue long after the dancefloor has cleared and guests have dispersed. Check out www.themagic1.co.uk

IS FOR QUIZ Pop an icebreaker quiz on the tables to get guests talking over dinner, or host a Mr & Mrs gameshow extravaganza on the dancefloor before the revelries begin in earnest.

ENTERTAINMENT IS FOR SAX From a cool Ibiza club vibe, to the smooth sounds of jazz, a live saxophonist can create the ambience of your choice, while adding a fun and interactive edge to your evening bash.

IS FOR TUNES If the date of your wedding means you’ll be restricted on entertainment by Covid guidelines, create your own playlist. Real wedding couple, Hannah and Mike’s was so good, the venue staff asked where they could download it (page 22)!

IS FOR VOCALIST Employ the soothing tones of a solo vocalist to bring that special something to your ceremony as you walk down the aisle or sign the register. They can also add an air of sophistication to your drinks reception.

IS FOR UNIQUE Personalise your day by filling it with what you love and making it uniquely you. Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race? Why not hire a drag performer to make a surprise appearance. If you love to sing, prepare a super-romantic surprise performance for your new husband or wife. Perhaps, you’re a member of a choir – can you organise for them to sing at your ceremony?

Y Z

IS FOR WAITERS For the ultimate surprise singing waiters are often hilarious, brilliantly entertaining and will, without doubt, provide a talking point far beyond the day itself. IS FOR X-PERTS Ok, we cheated here! But in all seriousness, your professional entertainers are experts in their field. Be sure to tap into their wealth of knowledge and experience with a pre-wedding meeting. Nobody knows how to fill a dancefloor like they do.

IS FOR YAKETY-YAK If your guestlist is filled with folk who haven’t seen each other for donkey’s years, sometimes less is more. They’ll love time to catch up, so consider periods of downtime or chill out zones away from all the action.

IS FOR ZZZ Time for bed, but no need to let the evening fizzle out. Be sent off in style with a sparkler guard of honour as you bid farewell. 47

T

ower is a hidden gem of a place that the world needs to know about,” says photographer and shoot coordinator Stacey Oliver. Set in a stunning rural area of North Wales, the venue offers an incredibly versatile approach to weddings, combining the grandeur of the main house with the laid-back boho nature of its woodland surroundings. Instantly finding herself on the same page as the venue’s owner when it came to the vision for the place, it became apparent that a styled shoot would be a wonderful way to capture its magic. Once a mood board was created, the creative passions of the area’s finest wedding suppliers were ignited. Despite a few date alterations due to the ever-changing situation surrounding the pandemic, patience won the day and the team were able to go ahead with safety measures in place. The resulting images speak far louder than words, so we’ll leave you to enjoy them – simply stunning!

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Wachadoin Events

Local experts offer some stellar wedmin advice

SEASONAL STYLE

What are your suggestions for styling a wintry wedding celebration? Winter brings a wonderful opportunity to add rich, warm colours and tones to your wedding dressings. Be it the rich reds we associate with the festive season, dark sumptuous blues and greens to give a luxurious feel, or crisp winter whites to reflect the scenery around us.

Accentuating the base palette with metallic golds and coppers can build structure, but will also add warmth and opulence to the look, while beautiful winter foliage can soften the dressings to create a wonderful, welcoming setting. Whether your styling is grand or intimate, small details such as berries, pine cones and foliage in silvery tones can add to the wintry feel, while the use of candles and fairylights will reflect the magical sparkle this season brings. Amanda Nelson, www.wachadoin.events

WARMING BAKES

There are so many delicious wedding cake flavours available now, that it’s hard to choose! Which would you recommend for our winter wedding? The colder months are the perfect time to enjoy something a little richer and more decadent than you’d perhaps choose during the summer. One of my most popular winter flavours is sticky toffee pudding, a rich and sticky sponge, sweet with brown sugar and Medjool dates, layered with a homemade sticky toffee sauce and a deliciously smooth vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. The best bit is, I can also provide extra jugs of sticky toffee sauce to be heated and served alongside – the perfect winter warming sweet treat! If you want something that captures the spices associated with the wintertime, then how about a carrot cake? Full of cinnamon, ginger and cloves, it’s packed full of crunchy walnuts and layered with a deliciously zesty orange buttercream for a real taste of the season. YOU’RE A NATURAL

We’re both a bit camera shy and are feeling anxious about a lot of photos on our wedding day. Can you offer us some advice? Don’t worry, it’s your photographer’s job to make you feel as comfortable as possible. The chats you’ll have with us in the run up to your big day help us discover what you like and what you’re worried about. There are very few concerns we haven’t heard, so don’t be afraid to share yours so that we can put your mind at ease. What’s more, you’ll be having such a wonderful time with friends and family, most of the time you won’t even notice us taking photos. Occasionally we’ll say: “Just look this way,” then you’re done. Of course, we all want some stunning portraits, just the two of

you, so we’ll sneak you away from your guests leaving them to drink to your happiness. We’ll have already found the perfect areas of your venue, so no time will be wasted and we can have a little fun and let you have a little quiet time together too. Fear not, you won’t be gone so long that your guests will have started the wedding breakfast without you! One way to get some fun practice in is to book a pre-wedding shoot with your chosen photographer, either in the studio or at your favourite location. Whatever worries you may have, you’ll have a good time overcoming them. After all’s said and done, what you’ll remember when you look through your wedding album is having a wonderful day together with your loves ones. Karen Boyle, www.andyboylephotography.com

A TO B

Our venue is a little off the beaten track so we’re keen to offer our guests transport home at the end of the night. What would you suggest? Guest transport is often overlooked. Many believe local taxi companies will always be available. But alas, outside of large towns and cities you might find they require several days’ notice. Good quality shuttles are an inexpensive way to have two or three vehicles on site for a few hours transporting guests safely and efficiently and ensuring they’re just as well looked after as the bridal party in their wedding cars. While you should expect to pay slightly more than standard taxi rates, it does mean you’ll have dedicated vehicles allocated to you for a specific time scale. Your venue may know of a local business that can offer this type of service or you can search independent hire operators in the region. We offer a tailored solution to ensure everyone is taken care of and arrive back at their homes or accommodation in comfort. James Whitewood, www.reemexecutive.com 54

FASHION ADVICE

GO FIGURE! How to dress for your big day whatever your beautiful shape

PEAR

K

nowing your body shape is a great place to start when thinking about your wedding dress. Your everyday wardrobe might already be screaming clues at you as it’ll be full of styles and shapes that you naturally gravitate towards. Have a look at other dresses you’ve worn to formal occasions or even to the office and see if they follow a general shape. If they do, this is a great guide to what silhouette of wedding dress to try on first. But the golden rules really are to keep an open mind and trust your bridal consultant. Emma Kendrick, manager of Maria Modes (www.mariamodes.com) in Macclesfield says, “If they pull a dress that’s a bit of a wild card don’t be alarmed! We’re trained to know what suits you best and if you don’t give it a go, you’ll never know.” Your Cheshire & Merseyside Wedding editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Emma for a chat about dressing according to body type and together they’ve gathered their top tips, just for you!

You’re likely to be boasting a pear or triangle body shape if you’d consider your hips and bottom to be wider than your shoulders and bust.

Emma says, “Choose a dress that subtly draws attention away from your waist and hips and flatters your figure, such as an A-line. Gowns with detailing and embellishment on the bodice work well as it draws the eye to your chest and waist.” Emma suggests: Hopkins by Pronovias Privee

Kelly says, “V and U-shaped necklines are great for the pear-shaped bride as they bring the angles away from the hips. Styles with sleeves also work wonders to broaden the shoulders and bring balance.”

Kelly suggests: Sara by Sassi Holford 59 

HOURGLASS

Emma says, “Choose a dress to accentuate and highlight those curves – don’t try to hide them! Corset, mermaid and fit and flare silhouettes are all perfect choices. If you have your heart set on a ballgown, don’t panic, just make sure the bodice is structured enough to still highlight your feminine shape.” Emma suggests: Lonnie by Maggie Sottero

If you’d describe your body as “curvy” and your bust and hip measurements are roughly equal, you most likely have an hourglass figure.

Kelly says, “Look for a corset back to really show off those curves, along with a beautiful sweetheart neckline to enhance the balance between bust and hips. If you’re not sure about a bold mermaid silhouette, a trumpet gown is a more subtle version and will look incredible on you!”

Kelly suggests: Berkeley by Morilee, The Other White Dress collection

APPLE

Kelly says, “Avoid strapless gowns. Instead look out for modern styles with wider straps, which flatter the shoulders and offer plenty of support. Choose a neckline that will show off your bustline and draw attention upward.” Kelly suggests: Izzy by True Bride, True Curves collection

Your body shape is likely to be described as “apple” if your shoulders, bust, waist and hips are fairly similar in measurement, with slightly narrower shoulders and hips.

Emma suggests: Farrah by Pronovias Emma says “Choose a gown with structure to pull you in at the waist and one with a full skirt to balance out your top half. Soft A-line dresses or ballgowns are great options. Avoid anything with a lot of detail on the neckline as this can make you look too busty.” 60

FASHION ADVICE Emma says, “Opt for a dress with an eye-catching pattern, a feature such as ruffles or an unusual neckline to draw the eye. Fit and flare or a soft A-line silhouette will work beautifully to give you a fabulous shape.” Emma suggests: Marquette by Sottero & Midgely

You’re most likely sporting a rectangle figure if you have straight hips and a straight body line. Don’t be deceived, you can still have a rectangle shape whether you’re size 8 or size 28.

Kelly says, “Think about adding some angles with a pretty belt or sash, a V-neck, or a bolero. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something completely different why not try a bridal two piece or suit, great for an ultra-stylish city wedding.” Kelly suggests: Tatum by Justin Alexander

INVERTED TRIANGLE

Kelly says, “A stunning dress with plenty of lace or detail will draw the eye away from any one area in particular. Opt for sleeves or wide straps to play down the shoulder area or give a daring sheath a try for a super-sleek look” Kelly suggests: Metropolis by Eliza Jane Howell

If you deem your shoulders to be the widest part of your body and you find your measurements narrow as you move down to your hips and waist, you can call your body shape an inverted triangle.

Emma suggests: Pickford by Pronovias, with detachable skirt

Emma says, “Find a dress with plenty of shoulder detailing, or if this isn’t your style, go for a large ballgown to bring balance to your bottom half.”

LOVELY LOCKS

I’m looking for a modern style to keep my hair away from my face on the big day. What can you suggest? Cassie says: I’d advise you go for a textured up do, a classy and elegant style that suits every hair type. Even if you’ve got fine hair, this is a great look – all hail the transformative power of clip-in hair extensions! This style will give you a generous amount of natural volume for an elegant look, but isn’t overpowering. I’d also incorporate some slight twists and overlapping to get the full potential from the style, with soft tendrils curled slightly around the face to flatter your features. A gorgeous hair accessory can be placed with a veil at the top of your head or underneath at the nape of the neck, keeping your up do on show.

SCULPTED

I’ve heard about contouring, but never fully understood how to do it. Can you help?

Cathryn says: Contouring is a way of enhancing and sculpting a person’s face by using shadow and highlights. The shadow can be used to slim down a face, create higher cheekbones and narrow a nose. Avoid using a bronzer for the shadow though, as they’re too warm to create the desired effect. Highlight, on the other hand, brings forward the good bits that you’d like to show off, such as the top of the cheekbone. Every face shape is different and has its own way of contouring. The key is subtlety and meticulous blending. You should never be able to tell that someone’s been contoured. My go to contouring palettes are Daniel Sandler Sculpt, and Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Bronze and Glow.

Good GLOW!

I love a fresh, glowing face. How do I create this without looking shiny? Julie says: A large part of achieving the perfect glowing look is in the preparation. Your skincare routine should be up to date, addressing any concerns, and in full swing. Make-up will never look its best if your skin is neglected or dehydrated. Start with your moisturiser and leave a good ten minutes for

it to thoroughly soak in before following with an illuminating primer. Some of my personal favourite primer brands are Laura Mercier and Charlotte Tilbury. Then, apply your makeup as normal. Liquid foundations work much better when applied with a beauty blender. Next, you’ll need to lightly powder your T-zone. Keep the look fresh and go for a dewy, natural shade of blush with just a hint of shimmer. A subtle highlight to the top of the cheekbones also works well, and a final spritz of an illuminating setting spray will leave you with a good glow.

“After using a tint for the first time I’m a convert! This colour was divine, and what I like is that you can layer it up and build the tone to your desired effect; soft subtle pink by day and a deep red by night. It lasted all day after drinking and eating, and even stayed on when I applied a balm over the top. A must-have for your make-up bag.” – Danielle Harvey

“Straight away, I loved the sturdy packaging and precise applicator. The lightweight formula has fantastic pigmentation and the product has a matte finish. There’s no cracking or bleeding because of the avocado oil, vitamin E, and hyaluronic filling spheres, which I’m very thankful for as there’s nothing I hate more than dry lips! The beautiful shade lasted hours on my lips and I got compliments all day when I wore it!” – Olivia Gibson

“The Lip Definer was easy to use, and I loved the way it looked. I put it on first thing, and by the time I went to bed it was still firmly in place, looking fabulous, even though I’d been in the rain most of the day. I had fun playing with the dual-ended pencil and brush creating a look that suited me and paired it with Unforgettable Lipstick in Legendary, but as it’s a natural shade it would work well with most colours.” – Melissa Barker

SHADE: UNDRESSED WITH LEGENDARY

“Historically, matte lipsticks have been my worst enemy – being a notorious lip-biter they show up all my flaws. But it’s safe to say that this product has changed my mindset. The finish, although definitely matte, is somehow silky and smooth. The best thing about this particular shade is that it’s bold enough to look like you’ve made an effort without being OTT – the perfect lazy-girl hack! It also has incredible staying power, but that does mean you need to be careful to apply correctly the first time as it doesn’t budge!” – Beth Morton
