M

y much-loved parents are celebrating 50 years of genuinely happy marriage this June which, in this day and age, is a remarkable achievement. Not only have they provided a happy home life for my brother and I to grow up in – and there’s not a day goes by where I’m not grateful for the carefree childhood that we had – they still provide a loving family unit for us now that we’re adults. When I watch how they love, respect and support one another, take care of each other and talk and laugh a lot, I realise that these are the key ingredients to a long and successful marriage. As a family, we’ll be celebrating their Golden Anniversary this summer and I can’t wait. Another big celebration taking place this June is The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and plenty of our local suppliers will be taking part, including Devon-based drinks company Luscombe who have launched their Street Party Boxes brimming with bunting and other delights. Whatever you’re planning for the extended bank holiday weekend, enjoy this historic milestone. In this issue, we have real-life couples at the start of their marital journey, who I wish all the very best plus styled shoot and venue dressing inspiration, big-day menu ideas, expert advice, offers and news. Until the next issue,

Perched on the spectacular North Coast of Cornwall, Gwel an Mor Resort is the perfect venue for a relaxed, bohemian-themed wedding

O

verlooking the quaint harbour town of Portreath, nestled within some of the most spectacular scenery that Britain has to offer, is the Gwel an Mor Resort. Silver Winner of the 2021 Wedding Venue of the Year award for good reason, couples can experience coastal boho chic at its best with a truly unique wedding experience. The location is stunning - the resort is located at the top of the harbour valley boasting beautiful sea views for those seeking a picture-perfect backdrop. Couples can wind their way through peaceful woodland to soft sandy shores set against rolling waves for photographs. The resort itself offers two choices of wedding venue - the intimate Wedding Yurt and the Wedding Barn. The yurt is the natural choice for smaller ceremonies of up to 89 guests and provides a rustic-inspired setting. The soft canvas open-timber frame can be styled with festoon lighting and rustic furnishings. For larger ceremonies (or used in combination with the yurt) the barn is dressed in swathes of fabric lining with statement chandeliers and fairylights. Just the two of you? The expert team at the venue cater for elopement weddings combining the cosy and stylish lodges with the intimate yurt. Whatever the wedding size, the resort team have been praised for their amazing attention to detail and concierge hospitality. This special venue is at the heart of the extended experience that Gwel an Mor offers. The resort boasts five-star facilities and a truly superb range of luxurious and Scandinavian-style lodges. For the wedding couple, the stylish Lakeside lodges are the perfect hideaway where they

can toast with prosecco in a private hot tub whilst watching the sunset over the Cornish coast. For those seeking something different, the resort is home to Feadon Wildlife Centre and under the expert hand of the on-park keepers, visitors can share the fun with the cute farm animals, exotic reptiles and magnificent birds of prey. Those planning a magical Christmas celebration will love the resident reindeer! The wedding breakfast will be superbly catered for by the head chef using the finest local ingredients including some fresh seafood. The talented kitchen team also provide canapé packages and there’s also the option of clotted cream scones. Gwel an Mor is a wedding experience best sampled over a few days. Facilities include the Wellbeing Spa offering Elemental Herbology treatments each personally matched to specific elements - earth, water, fire, wood or metal. The Terrace Bar and Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner serving dishes made using fresh locally sourced produce. There’s an indoor swimming pool and a wide range of accommodation including hot tubs. For the little ones there’s the Base Camp indoor soft play and clip ‘n climb centre, or guests can try their hand at archery, tennis or the challenging Famous Nine Golf Course, a par 3 course modelled on some of the best holes in world golf. For your special day, you need a special venue and at Gwel an Mor Resort, rustic charm with superb attention to detail and quality of delivery with breathtaking scenery will frame a most unforgettable experience.

LOCAL NEWS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER MARTYN NORSWORTHY Devon-based photographer Martyn Norsworthy has been granted membership in the Photographers Bar, a unique distinction only awarded to those photographers who have successfully had images assessed by the Guild of Photographers for a year and have attained a score that evidences an exceptional level of professional skill and consistency. The Guild of Photographers is a highly respected association for all photographers, and its competition attracted over 13,000 entries in 2021 – all judged by an expert panel of judges each month. Steven and Lesley Thirsk, directors said, “We’re delighted for Martyn as this is a great achievement! Submitting and having images assessed every month for a year and reaching the required standards to become a member of the Photographers Bar is very demanding. It illustrates his commitment, skill, and consistency. Martyn should be immensely proud of what he has achieved.” Martyn adds, “I’m so happy to have been given this award. It’s a challenge to enter each month to a very high standard, but this shows that consistency and hard work pays off!” To find out more, visit www.photoguild.co.uk and to book Martyn for your wedding, visit www.norsworthyphotography.com

REAL WEDDING

S

ophie and James met online. “I lived in Portsmouth and James in Gloucester so we agreed to meet halfway for a drink,” Sophie tells us. “On the day, my car didn’t start so our first date was delayed but James presumed that I wasn’t going to show up!” The couple became engaged almost two years later during a surprise proposal in the Lake District. “James got down on one knee and presented me with a beautiful diamond ring which was a wonderful surprise! We celebrated with dinner in a local pub, it was the perfect private proposal to mirror our intimate family wedding that was to follow.”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple’s first weekend break away together was to Frieda and the Moon near Looe in Cornwall and they fell in love with the beautiful setting in a stunning part of the region. “I visited Cornwall every year with my family when I was a child and James and I were keen to marry somewhere unusual so Frieda and the Moon provided the perfect venue,” Sophie explains. “We loved their focus on intimate weddings, which is what we wanted.” “The Studio at Frieda and the Moon offers a rustic stylish feel with a feature stained-glass window and plenty of quirky details, plus their Observatory had recently been added,” Sophie tells us. “Babs from the venue creates a bouquet for every bride who marries there, asking in advance for preferences, so I requested yellow and orange blooms which are two of my favourite colours and the result was marvellous! Babs also made a colourful buttonhole for the gentlemen and I contacted a local florist, Fleurtations, who provided a stunning orchid headpiece and orchid corsages for the ladies as a nod to my late father who was an extremely talented orchid grower.” Following the couple’s intimate ceremony, the wedding party headed outside into the sunshine for fizz, confetti and photographs. “The exquisite rural setting needed nothing adding to it, the far-flung views across the hills provided the perfect backdrop for our photos and we weren’t expecting glorious sunshine when we booked our October date! Sophie, James and their guests enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea in the Studio that included homemade cakes and scones. “This was provided by Paul and Babs at the venue and tasted delicious,” Sophie says. “We then spent a dreamy afternoon in Polperro where we received such a warm welcome from locals – finding ourselves on Polperro’s Facebook page the next day and seeing so many kind comments and good wishes was the cherry on the cake! The team at The Blue Peter Inn let us have some photographs taken inside the bar and sent us a bottle of fizz to toast our special day. We had hired a car and our friendly driver, Stuart stopped on the journey back to Frieda and the Moon so that we could buy some fish and chips. Our guests were unanimous in crowning the curry sauce the best they had ever had! The evening ended with a playlist and singing and dancing before we retired to our hot tub under the stars.”

LOOKING THE PART Sophie wore a dress called Petal purchased from Vivienne Stella Bridal Gallery. “It was the first wedding gown that I had ever tried on and suited the setting perfectly,” she tells us. “It was a simple, flowing style that was so easy to wear. My sister bought me a denim jacket with ‘I love you to the moon and back’ printed on the back. It fitted perfectly with the astrological theme at Frieda and the Moon and attracted several comments as we wandered through the streets of Polperro!” James wore a blue cotton Oxford shirt teamed with a pair of pastel pink chinos that, without planning to, matched the décor at the venue wonderfully! He added a green waistcoat and a pair of brown brogues which resulted in a relaxed style that suited our wedding theme.

REAL WEDDINGS

N

icola and Clint met in a hostel in Sydney, Australia when they were both backpacking. “We enjoyed several dates during our time in Sydney including Bondi Beach, Sydney Zoo and The Royal Botanic Garden,” Nicola tells us. “I was 23 and he was 31 (which I thought was too old for me) so I never thought it would amount to anything serious. But when I left Sydney a few months later to continue my travels, we were both heartbroken so he surprised me by turning up on my camping trip to Ayers Rock (even though he hates camping!) A month later, he surprised me again, arriving on a remote Fijian island where I was staying (even though he doesn’t like travelling on boats and the only way to reach this island was by a tiny fishing boat!) We fell in love and returned to the UK some months later; me back to my hometown of Torquay in Devon and Clint back to London. We enjoyed a long-distance relationship for six months before I decided to move to London to be with him.” The couple became engaged on holiday in Italy in June 2018, almost ten years after they had first met. “We visited Polignano a Mare in Puglia and then Syracuse in Sicily,” Nicola tells us. “After spending an afternoon at a vineyard enjoying a private tour and wine tasting, we headed back to our hotel with a bottle of the wine we had purchased at the vineyard to enjoy before dinner. Clint suddenly announced that he needed to go back to our room to get something and came back with a plate covered with a teacup explaining that the chef had made something special. He played the Stevie Wonder song Knocks Me Off My Feet on his phone (which later became the track for our first dance) before getting down on one knee, lifting the teacup to reveal a ring box and asking me to marry him!”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple viewed venues near where they live in Windsor and Berkshire but most had a cut-off time of 11 pm, and being partygoers, they wanted their celebrations to go on later than that. “I saw an advert on Facebook for The Ash Barton Estate in Devon which is a DIY farmhouse and barn venue with no curfew,” Nicola explains. “It was perfect so we booked it for four days from Thursday to Sunday to host an entire wedding weekend! We wanted a family dinner on Thursday evening, afternoon tea on Friday, our wedding on Saturday and a barbecue brunch party on Sunday.” Due to the pandemic, Nicola and Clint had to rearrange their original date in March 2020 several times and finally secured 19th February 2022. “There wasn’t much to organise because we postponed everything we had originally planned and moved it to the February date,” Nicola tells us. “The team at the venue and our suppliers were very understanding. When the day finally arrived, we were incredibly excited, not least because we’d be getting married but also because we would be reunited with our friends and family members, most of whom we hadn’t seen for the past two years. Then, a weather warning for Storm Eunice was issued! Around 11 am on Friday as we were setting up the dining room, just four hours before our guests were due to arrive for the afternoon tea, the power went. The venue owners managed to secure an emergency generator and some engineers to fit it and we had the power back on just half an hour before our guests were due to arrive for the ceremony. My Mum’s speech after our wedding breakfast was fantastic, even without a microphone because the power cut out just before we were due to do the speeches! She confidently (and loudly) captured the sentiment of the occasion perfectly, addressing the sombre and emotional element of both my father and Clint’s father’s absence due to their passing and the pandemic. She also included fun and humour and towards the end of her speech, the power came back 43

Canonteign Falls offers an impressive venue in a breathtaking setting Home to one of England’s highest waterfalls Canonteign Falls is a magnificent example of a Victorian folly set in 90 acres of ancient woodland and estate on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park in Devon. The waterfalls themselves descend for over 70m through ferns and woods. At the base of the falls, the woodland gives way to meadows and lakes making this one of the most breathtaking venues in Devon. With a lakeside Pagoda, event Barn, excellent facilities, and free parking the site is well set up to service any bespoke event and provides an impressive backdrop to suit any occasion. A small but experienced event team is on hand to coordinate all events seamlessly at Canonteign Falls estate. on and everyone cheered which was magical!” For their wedding breakfast, Nicola and Clint chose familystyle sharing dishes consisting of large plates of food placed down the centre of their three rectangular tables for guests to help themselves. “For starters, we had king prawn and mango salad with fresh lime and coriander, deep-fried brie wedges served with freshly baked figs, caramelised onion and pine nut salad and vine tomato and basil pesto bruschetta with olive oil ciabatta,” Nicola tells us. “For the main course, our guests had a choice of the low-roast leg of lamb with Caribbean spices; salmon with mustard, dill and orange slices served with baby roast potatoes and roasted summer vegetables; roasted sweet potato salad with crumbled feta, beetroot pine nuts and toasted seeds with cucumber shavings; Tabbouleh salad with fresh mint, parsley, spring onion, cucumber and cherry tomatoes finished with a fresh citrus dressing and green salad with baby leaves, tender stem broccoli and sugar snap peas with basil oil dressing topped with parmesan shavings. The delicious mini desserts included double chocolate brownies, strawberry pavlova and tart au citron.” The couple’s cake was made by a friend who is a chef and the owner of a London restaurant. “It was a three-tier naked cake with a chocolate sponge layer, a vanilla cream one and a red velvet tier decorated with peach roses and eucalyptus,” Nicola describes. “Our favours were key-shaped bottle openers to represent a great party!” The couple’s mint and sage-green colour theme was shown in the relaxed, unstructured floral displays of white, green and soft peach varieties including spray roses, peach roses, white gypsophila and eucalyptus. “My Mum cut ivy from her garden which we wrapped around the hand-painted signs that my grandad painted for us, down the tables and on the chairs,” Nicola says.

REAL WEDDINGS

“Give your phone to your bridesmaid or a trusted friend for the day – you don’t need to be looking at it on your wedding day!” – Nicola

LOOKING THE PART Nicola had originally wanted to buy her dress in Devon and had a clear vision of what she wanted. “I was looking for a fishtail dress with a lace overlay,” she tells us. “After trying on a selection of dresses in his style, I realised it wasn’t me so we visited a store in London where each of my bridesmaids, and my bridesman Freddy, picked a style for me to try. Freddy chose a different style to what I’d tried before with long sleeves and I loved it! It just needed a little something extra so the shop assistant handed me a style called Athens which was perfect - I’d been drawn to Grecian-style dresses previously and had enjoyed my hen do in Greece! I didn’t need any accessories because the dress was beautiful as it was.” Clint and his groomsmen wore navy suits with silver-grey waistcoats and ties and mint-green pocket squares to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. “Our two bridesmaids wore bespoke mint dresses and chose their styles to suit their shapes,” Nicola says. “My bridesman wore a green suit and looked fantastic!”

TIME TO CELEBRATE Nicola and Clint had a Caribbean steel drum band playing outside in the courtyard after the ceremony. “This was a nod to Clint’s family heritage with his mum being from Dominica and his dad from Belize,” Nicola tells us. “After the wedding breakfast, we had a Motown band perform on stage who played our first dance song and plenty of Motown classics including Love Train by The O’Jays and Upside Down by Diana Ross - they were an absolute hit! We chose Motown because we love that genre of music but also thought it would suit all age groups. Afterwards, we had a house and garage DJ playing until the early hours who announced a dance-off between the men and women, playing a track and giving everyone 30 seconds each to perform their best moves which were brilliant!” 45

“We both felt elated on our special day - it was, without a doubt, the best day of our lives.” – Nicola and Clint

Gemma Halliwell is the talent behind the Westcountry Wedding Planner based in Devon and styling weddings in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset, from those held in cottage gardens and on beautiful beaches to grand castle affairs. She tells us how the main trend for weddings throughout 2022 is still the ever-popular boho style and that gold, sage green, white, mauve and dusky pink are still at the top of the colour charts. She says, “Gold vintage candlesticks, cylinder vases filled with foliage and earthenware jars are our most popular centrepieces and dried flowers and pampas grass are trending in bouquets and flower arrangements which may be a reaction to rising flower costs and choosing things that are sustainable.”

FABULOUS FLOWERS Floral towers and columns are becoming increasingly popular with couples looking for a versatile alternative to a floral arch. These designs can be placed at the entrance to the venue or as a backdrop for the ceremony. Unlike a flora-filled archway, these arrangements can be moved to the wedding reception, after the ceremony, to create a focal point or frame the top table. Flower meadows are great design options for the aisle either in a church or ceremony venue. These floor-based designs can be created in a range of styles, from natural wildflower-inspired shapes to more classic and elegant looks. After the ceremony, these blooms look beautiful placed on the floor in front of the top table or around the cake and card tables. ❤ The Flower Press Shop, 01872 270 463, https://theflowerpressshop.co.uk www.instagram.com/theflowerpressshop

PEBORYON SHOWCASES THE LATEST WEDDING CAKE DESIGNS With wedding season upon us, the talented team at Peboryon cakes based in Cornwall has revealed what to watch out for this year. Owner Claire Potts tells us, "We’re delighted that the fondant cake is making a comeback! Along with beautiful sugar flowers, we’re also seeing wafer paper flowers becoming popular. They’re a good alternative to sugar flowers and the two can be combined. Dried flowers are proving an enduring trend, did you know that these can be recreated in sugar and wafer paper? That way, everything decorating the cake is safe to eat - we love working with both!” Another trend that the team are seeing emerging is colour. “A vibrant cake makes a statement centrepiece and the colours can reflect current trends or the couple, for example, their favourite colours,” Claire says. Anne-Marie says, “Being filmed in Dragon’s Den was a truly exciting experience and a brilliant way of letting consumers know about the brand and its drinking experience.” Anne-Marie founded and launched Floreat in autumn 2019 and quickly established a national drinks distributor at the start of 2020 to provide Floreat to high-end spa hotels and wedding venues. Floreat is produced and made in Cornwall providing the modern drinker with an exciting experience, made from wine, and lower in alcohol and calories than a typical bottle of champagne (5.4% ABV and 35 Kcals per 100ml compared to 12.5% ABV and 72 Kcal per 100ml for champagne.) Floreat is at the forefront of incorporating medical-grade herbs within wine and Anne-Marie

FABULOUS FLORALS What are the benefits of having dried and preserved flowers in our wedding arrangements and bouquets? Meet the expert: Grace Michaels is the co-founder of Barn Florist selling wholesale dried and preserved flowers and foliage online. Grace says: The popularity of dried and preserved florals for weddings shows no signs of slowing down. The array of colours, textures and shapes available allow couples to have wow-factor wedding flowers. From pampas and palms to bunny tails and baby’s breath, there’s such a wide variety available which means no theme or colour scheme is offlimits. Not only do they look beautiful but you’ll be left with a long-lasting keepsake from your big day, which makes them sustainable too. The versatility of dried and preserved florals has proven popular through the pandemic for both weddings and interiors. Everlasting varieties are not only perfect for your big day but you’ll be left with a delightful low maintenance arrangement for your home. Preserved florals are a great option if you like the look of fresh flowers but would like to keep them after the wedding. There’s a wide selection to choose from including classic roses, hydrangeas and eucalyptus as well as more unique pieces such as lace ferns and trailing amaranthus. Dried and preserved florals not only work well together but it’s also possible to combine them with fresh ones. 66

EXPERT ADVICE

What’s new in the world of wedding flowers for summer celebrations this year? Meet the expert: Lin Turner is the owner of Sweet Pea Helston, an award-winning florist based in Cornwall. Lin says: This year and next look like being very busy for weddings and we’re excited for the designs we’re going to create with a focus on British-grown flowers. Every wedding is different but we’re seeing a popular trend for dried flowers mixed with fresh blooms and couples are choosing pampas grass and bunny tails teamed with a variety of foliage to add texture and interest to their bridal bouquets and arrangements. Foliage will still influence relaxed and unstructured designs with long table garlands a firm favourite. Foliage plants used as table décor are becoming popular too - they look great nestled amongst table garlands displayed trestle tables with couples often giving these away as gifts. We’re seeing our busiest year yet with statement pieces such as arches and hanging installations adding the wow factor to any space, especially barns. The colour palette is ranging from more earthy colours like coffee, caramel, and coral to pale blues and greens with sage green a favourite choice for bridesmaids’ dresses. 01326 572 243 | www.sweetpeahelston.com Instagram @sweetpeafloralstudio Facebook @sweetpeafloralstudio decorations or making other costly preparations. The sun and sand will set the scene for your ceremony - all you need to bring is your marriage license and your guests! Planning your wedding at the beach can be relatively easy and stress-free. ♥ Save money on décor costs The natural beauty of a beach wedding will be your surroundings. The soft white sand and blue sea can provide the perfect backdrop without breaking the bank. If you want to embellish your ceremony further, you can consider adding seashells as centrepieces or incorporating seaweed into the bouquets and buttonholes.

MAKING WAVES How can we host a laid-back beach wedding? Meet the expert: Simon Daukes is the owner of Arches Beach Weddings based on Newberry Beach in Combe Martin, Devon. It’s a one-of-a-kind, ceremony-only, DIY beach wedding venue. The Daukes family also own The Ash Barton Estate in Braunton, a wedding venue with a manor house and extensive grounds. Simon says: Even if you’re dreaming of a formal affair with a long white dress and tuxedo, a beach wedding can be flexible enough to allow for some personal touches while remaining elegant. The beach offers many benefits that couples may not have considered and there are numerous locations in Devon and Cornwall (and the UK) that specialize in beach weddings. Couples can choose from large or small venues or even say ‘I do’ on a secluded beach. Getting married at the beach allows you to create a unique, memorable event without having to spend hours setting up elaborate

♥ Enjoy a bigger guest list Outdoor weddings can often accommodate more guests because you’re not confined to the size of a ballroom or other indoor space. Since many beaches have miles of shoreline, beach wedding venues can offer private ceremony locations with no traffic or onlookers. ♥ It’s a holiday for your guests A beach wedding provides an opportunity for your loved ones to visit a beautiful place and extend the break. ♥ Comfort is key Couples will have freedom as far as their wedding attire is concerned. There’s no need for heavy dresses and brides can wear something floaty that they feel comfortable in. Grooms can team light-coloured trousers with a dress shirt and no tie. Wedding guests don’t have to worry about dressing up too much either if they don’t want to. 07785 386 622 | www.archesbeachweddings.com 67

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 69

However, this shampoo and conditioner surpassed my expectations tenfold. It left my dry and damaged hair looking healthy and glossy after just one wash. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey 87

ANTARCTICA AND RWANDA

Wilderness Safaris and White Desert have come together to design an adventure-packed itinerary featuring the best of Africa and Antarctica. Set to take place in January 2023, the companies’ shared guests will enjoy the most awe-inspiring experiences, hand-crafted to highlight the best of Wilderness Safaris and White Desert’s offerings. Ice & Fire is a 20-day journey where couples will discover the highlights of Cape Town, Antarctica, and Rwanda. During their stay, tourists will have exclusive access to observe over 14 000 breeding pairs of penguins and their weeks-old chicks. SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! There is

a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Escape to

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

E

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
