On the cover Photographer Helen Alderton captured this issue’s stunning front cover image of model Emma Julian and trusty steed Riley as part of a shoot at her stables in Cambridge. “I wanted to showcase some simple yet stunning ideas and poses for brides wanting to include their horses on their wedding day,” she explains. Couples often worry that the horse may not cooperate, but Riley was an absolute star! “The idea was to show how keeping it simple really works,” adds Helen. With planet-friendly practices at the heart of the enterprise, he has partnered with Carbon Neutral Britain to further reduce the environmental impact of his whole operation. Adam explains, “We have been working with them to offset our remaining carbon emissions from travel and other business areas for around six months now. Prior to this, since my wife Anna and I launched the horsebox photo booth, we have planted a tree for every booking. We made the change to make all the businesses 100 per cent carbon neutral in the hope that we can make a difference and show that, with just a little thought, it is possible to have an eco-friendly business without too much effort.”

This wedding was beautifully and simply decorated with olive trees and bowls of lemons. These stylish twisted stemmed bays exude a cool elegance against the marquee on a hot summer’s day. www.tomhalliday.com

The horsebox photo booth is a popular attraction at weddings and has a large solar panel covering the whole roof and 200kg of batteries inside to keep it going well into the night. “It’s the UK’s only fully off-grid one of its kind!” says Adam. “Our indoor booth also runs without the need for mains electricity as it’s battery-powered – even the professional photo printer runs off-grid, all thanks to the latest battery technology and our solar setup at home which charges everything up, the same is true for the photography and film businesses,” he adds.

A big Your East Anglian Wedding high five to Ella, one part of the motherand-daughter duo at Langton Flowers in Mildenhall, Suffolk. After three postponements from 2020, Ella and her now husband Ben, finally wed in May this year. Mum Julie reports, “This was particularly special for us as a business as it meant we could let our creativity run wild. With no design brief, we had the chance to experiment with new ideas and a variety of flowers. Large installation pieces are so popular right now, and it was the perfect opportunity to explore and create large feature pedestals and modern archways. Now we can’t wait for all the weddings to come and more showstopping designs!”

Psst… Don’t miss the next issue for the chance to see the wedding in all its floral glory!

“It’s awesome,” says a delighted Emma. “Just to have been nominated is an achievement. A lot of work goes into weddings and it’s nice to get recognition for what we do, not just for the day itself but all the work that goes on behind the scenes.” Emma started the business in 2013, running it alongside her fulltime job initially before taking the plunge to go self-employed. “Growing the business was the best decision I’ve ever made and, with the help of some very good friends and family, I’ve worked tirelessly to get it to where it is now. Luckily, things have picked up again after the pandemic, weddings are back and I couldn’t be happier,” she adds. Every wedding is bespoke to each couple, covering anything from canapés and two- to three-course wedding breakfasts to picnic-style afternoon tea, platter sharing boards and evening food. The perfect blend of old and new, Bedford Lodge retains the charm and character of its former hunting lodge days, but with all the luxury and comfort of a modern boutique hotel. Surrounded by three acres of secluded rose gardens, the elegant white stucco Georgian house was built for the sixth Duke of Bedford and was converted into a hotel in the 1940s. The grand entrance and flower-filled pathways provide a picturesque backdrop and with formal lawns there’s plenty of great spots in the grounds for standout photos. The Classics Suite is the largest banqueting space and boasts a private garden with manicured topiary, perfect for al fresco ceremonies. You can host your whole day in the elegant room with up to 150 guests and the versatile space can also be adapted to suit more intimate weddings.

A photographer’s dream, there’s plenty of outdoor space to enjoy, including a beautiful lake framing the Georgian buildings, a walled garden, not forgetting the scenic Norfolk countryside stretching as far as the eye can see. The gardens within the West Terrace still have original plants from the 17th century, including a 400-year-old mulberry tree, and the terrace is a wonderful spot for al fresco ceremonies, sundowners and reception drinks. We love… that the bride can make her grand entrance by boat and get married on the venue’s magical Lake Island with up to 50 family and friends.

Beccy and Lewis admired each other from a distance until a work party finally brought them together. Although they’d seen each other at work, they had never actually spoken before.

“The attraction was already there but it was confirmed that evening when I challenged her to a game of beer pong – and she won!” laughs Lewis. He asked her to marry him while they were on holiday in Turkey in September 2020. “I’d had the ring for nine months before we went, but due to the pandemic my options for proposing were limited. Knowing how much Beccy hates being the centre of attention, it had to be private,” he explains. The perfect moment arrived while on a romantic night out at one of the resort’s fanciest restaurants. “We got dressed up for the evening and while going for a ‘photo’ on the balcony, I got down on one knee!” Beccy said ‘yes’ and they tied the knot at Hockwold Hall in Norfolk on 5th February this year. Read on for Lewis’ account of their big day…

Country CHARM A subtle blend of dusky pink, cream and maroon set the tone for Beccy and Lewis’ stylish wedding Images courtesy of Ben Chapman Photos

The bridesmaids looked incredible in their off-the-shoulder, long dresses.

The emotions kicked in just before the ceremony started and we both cried when Beccy walked down the aisle – how could I have not? We chose to get married in Norfolk as it’s where we met and Hockwold Hall was the thirdvenue we saw. It epitomised the area for us and the combination of the old-style house andrural country grounds was exactly what we wanted.

“As soon as I tried on my dress, I instantly felt like a bride, so I knew it was the one.” – Beccy

We all wore identical suits and accessories and bought the same brown boots tofinish off the smart country look. The décor was mainly in different shades of pink and cream and included lots ofgarlands, a big flower arch at the entrance to the marquee and blossom trees.

We gave our guests bottle openers in the shape of rustic keys to take home with them as a small memento of our day.

One of the bridesmaids made our cake. We were expecting it to be small and simple, just to have something to cut, but she went above and beyond, creating a two-tier masterpiece including both our favourite flavours.

We had a flowery candy car and giant LOVE letters and received endless compliments about the décor. POPPING THE QUESTION

THE TIME AND PLACE  They set the date for 14th May 2022 and began the hunt for the perfect setting for their big day. They knew they wanted a barn venue with a laid-back vibe and fell in love with Alpheton Hall Barns in Suffolk. “The venue was beautiful and secluded with everything we wanted, including a separate ceremony room and the barn for the reception was full of character. We ended up getting married outside in the woodland area though, which we hadn’t even seen when we first looked, and it was definitely the right decision. So many people commented on how beautiful the setting was,” recalls Francesca.

After meeting online, the first time Joseph set eyes on Francesca, he knew straight away that she was the one. “Joseph says that as soon as I opened the door to him and smiled for the first time, he knew he was going to marry me, however I took a little longer to realise this,” admits Francesca. At first, she thought the relationship wasn’t likely to go anywhere because Joseph was just too good to be true. However, she changed her mind after confiding in a good friend. “I’m so glad I listened to them as they swiftly told me I was talking nonsense!”

Romance blossomed and when the time came, Joseph surprised Francesca by asking her to marry him during a trip away just before the first Covid lockdown.

“Ever since we started dating, he’d always said he’d never propose on holiday. In fact, it became a running joke between us and whenever we went away, I’d always stop, as if to ask if this was the moment, or he’d get down on one knee, look up at me and then proceed to tie his shoelace. So when we went to Northern Ireland, the thought of him proposing was the furthest thing from my mind!”

However, on a windy day, in a quiet spot while visiting The Giants Causeway, Joseph suddenly got down on one knee – and this time it was for real!

LOOKING THE PART

Despite having a clear vision of what she wanted, Francesca struggled to find her dream dress. “I was sure I would know straight away but that wasn’t the case.

ALL IN THE DETAIL

THE PERSONAL TOUCHES

I was beginning to panic a little until I went to Pure Brides in Norwich and they couldn’t have been more helpful.” She ended up going for a classic, A-line Essense of Australia dress, style D3080, the opposite to previous styles she’d tried on. “I was so glad I went with their recommended seamstress for my alterations too, as she was absolutely amazing!” Joseph had a clear vision of what he wanted and found his three-piece green suit on ASOS. “It was super-skinny and looked amazing with his red hair,” adds Francesca. The bridesmaids completed the picture in matching deep blue dresses.

The table plan for the reception was a DIY affair made from a picture frame with strings and pegs for the printed names. The floral centrepieces were also homemade combining small vases and tea light holders which Francesca decorated to go with the wedding colour scheme. “I drew flowers and hearts on the vases and a zigzag pattern on the tea light holders, which matched the colours of the table names. The tables were named after gig venues they’d been to during their relationship. “We got our children to write and decorate the table name cards as we loved the idea of them being involved and they were really excited to be part of the planning,” explains Francesca. “Music has always been an important part of our relationship and we named our top table The Village Underground as that was where we saw our first gig together.” As favours, they gave their guests personalised pots of Strawberry and Champagne Tiptree jam as it was one of Joseph’s late mother’s favourite flavours. Special pin badges were also attached to the place names in aid of the charity they recently launched in memory of their son Felix who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Their three-tier cake was a fresh take on the traditional with a bottom Snickers layer, followed by pistachio, white chocolate and raspberry and carrot cake on top, all decorated in keeping with the colourful, floral theme of the day. The Asian-inspired food was another highlight with a selection of canapés, chicken

Fortunately, it all worked out for the best and her dad drove them both to the ceremony,” explains Joseph.

REAL WEDDING 39

THE ‘I DOS’ “When I saw Joseph, my eyes filled with the happiest of tears. He cried too before I’d even got down the aisle and one of my favourite photos from the day is of him wiping his eyes,” recalls Francesca. “The ceremony was incredible. Joseph says that seeing me walk down the aisle with our children was a memory he will never forget. It felt really special to include them and for the older two to be of an age that they will be able to remember it. We stood facing our guests for the ceremony which made the occasion feel even more intimate,” she adds. Despite being overcast the day before, the weather was beautiful too with clear blue skies and glorious sunshine. Their florist Nichola made eye-catching hoops with greenery and coloured ribbons to hang in the woods and then reuse for the reception afterwards. The bouquets were a mix of bright blooms and each of the matching buttonholes for the groom’s party included a thistle in a nod to Joseph’s Scottish roots. The wedding car was actually Francesca’s dad’s. “It was a Volvo SP1800, the one The Saint used to drive to be precise. It had been sat as a shell in a garage for more than 30 years and when Francesca asked her dad if she could have it for the wedding, he made it his mission to get it ready. It was a bit hairy as to whether it would be ready or not, right down to the day before!

TIME TO PARTY

The Legends band nailed the evening entertainment. “We took ages deciding on who to go for and are happy we stumbled across these guys. So many of our guests said how good the music was and how much they enjoyed themselves. We specifically asked the band to come as they would for a pub gig as we wanted the atmosphere to be relaxed and fun and for everyone to just party and enjoy themselves and they definitely did just Josephthat!”spent a long time compiling the playlist for during the day and after the band had finished. “He was particularly proud that somehow it seamlessly went from Peter Andre’s Mysterious Girl to Rage Against the Machine’s protest song Killing In the Name. It shouldn’t have worked but somehow it did!” laughs Francesca. They also had a photo booth which was great fun for adults and children alike. “It also provided us with photo memories we can keep forever including some that people don’t even remember being taken!”

REAL WEDDINGS 43

The old saying ‘two’s company, three’s a crowd’ may be true for some couples, but not Vanessa and Mark. They got to know each other online and after chatting for a few weeks, when they arranged their first date Vanessa brought her pet bulldog Keef along too. “We met up and walked Keef together and hit it off straight away,” she recalls. Fast forward a few years and Mark was planning to propose on a romantic weekend away in the Lake District until Covid restrictions kicked in and they couldn’t go. Instead, he waited until moving home the week before lockdown at the end of March 2020. “Mark surprised me and got down on one knee on our first night in our new home,” reveals Vanessa. She said ‘yes’, of course, and they tied the knot on 21st May this year at St John’s Church, Beck Row, Bury St Edmunds, with Keef by their side. Surrounded by family and friends, they celebrated afterwards with a chilled reception at Mildenhall Social Club. Read on for Vanessa’s account of their big day…

“I felt very nervous walking up the aisle and Mark looked like he was about to cry.”

“I had my late nan’s brooch with me which has been passed down to the women in the family to attach to their bouquets.”

44

I always wanted a church wedding and being allowed to have Keef with us as our page(dog) made it extra special. My friend Christine Dowling made mine and all the bridesmaids’ dresses. I just supplied the material and she did the rest.

45 REAL WEDDINGS

I accessorised with a pearl necklace and bracelet I’d worn 30 years ago as a bridesmaid for my sister and gold earrings which were a prewedding present from my daughter who was my maid-of-honour.”

Mark and I sat together at a sweetheart table and we had seven other tables for all our family and friends. We gave our guests personalised chocolates and Love Hearts sweets as favours, along with miniature pink gin and tonic for the ladies, Jack Daniels and Coke for the men and Baileys for the mums.

The Mildenhall Social Club was ideal for our whole celebration as we were able to have the outside caterers we wanted and the bar, disco and reception tables all in one room so everyone could be together.

The colour scheme was a mix of champagne, wine and rose shades.

“I asked our guests for their wedding songs to create a playlist for everyone to listen to during the wedding breakfast.”

Be prepared for a lull while changing over from the daytime events to the evening entertainment. Provide a chillout zone for people to relax and take time out before the party gets underway. A supervised creche or children’s entertainer to keep the little ones amused is also a great idea, especially for parents wanting to cut some moves on the dancefloor.

❤ Trust your professionals – even if you’ve been working on your playlist for ever, if you’re hiring an experienced DJ be open to their expert input, it’s what you pay them for after all! They will know how to work the room and what to play to keep the dancefloor busy all night.

❤ If you’re having a live band, check if your venue has a sound limiter as nothing puts a dampener on the party quite like the power cutting out.

To help make your wedding stand out for all the right reasons, it pays to get the entertainment right. For the happy couple, the big day may go by in a flash, but for family and friends, especially travel-weary guests or those with young children, any lulls in the proceedings can dampen the feelgood factor. To make sure your celebration is one to remember, read on for some handy hints and a snapshot of just some of what’s on offer locally.

❤ Rather than packing all the entertainment into the evening, try spreading it throughout the day. A close-up magician is ideal for helping people to mix and mingle during the drinks reception and if the weather’s fine, outdoor garden games are fun for young and old alike. Pick them to match the style of your wedding, with a coconut shy and hook-theduck for a country-fete theme or croquet on the lawn for a sophisticated garden-party vibe.

❤ End on a high with a breathtaking fireworks display, if your venue allows, or a sparkler send-off. Even if you have it earlier in the evening, it’s still the perfect finale for the wedding album.

❤ If you’re opting for live music at any stage of the day, try to see the act perform first before booking to be sure it’s the best possible fit for you, your guests, the time and place. Online research and personal recommendations are great, but nothing quite beats first-hand experience.

❤ Throw in a few surprises like singing waiters during the meal, a flash mob dance or choreographed routine with you and your best girls or boys to kick-start the evening party. You could even wow your family and friends with a dazzling first dance by having professional lessons in the run-up to the big day.

Fun, games and entertainment for a standout big day The time ofYOUR LIFE

❤ If you’re tying the knot early in the day, help keep the hunger pangs at bay with a traditional ice cream van, serving up cooling treats before the wedding breakfast or as an alternative to dessert – fabulous for fun wedding photos too.

TOP TIPS ❤ The soundtrack to your day can really set the mood and help people get into the spirit of things. Whether it’s a romantic harpist or string quartet playing during the ceremony and post-vows drinks reception or a lively jazz band setting the tone, the music can reflect the style and theme of the wedding and boost the whole atmosphere.

55

❤ A prime time for guests to start getting restless is after the ‘I dos’, while the photos are being taken. Why not lay on a few distractions to keep them engaged, like a caricaturist? Not only fascinating to watch, but the drawings also provide a lasting memento.

“Lookrecommends:forsomeone with personality who will help break the ice. Usually at weddings there are groups of people that don’t know each other and good entertainment should help them to come together to witness and then discuss what they have seen.”

MAGIC MOMENTS A close-up magician can be a godsend at a wedding, drawing people in and helping them to get to know each other. FUN AND GAMES

For plenty of oohs and ahhs, treat your guests to a showstopping fireworks display. Vanessa White of Cambridgeshire-based Whitelightning Pyrotechnics shares her industry insight for a stress-free show:

3. Look at what extras companies can offer, like your initials lit up in a heart, firework fountains down a driveway, or starting the show yourselves with the push of a button.

The Little Lending Company offers a treasure trove of great props and decorative details for hire, including this cute children’s tipi complete with Persian rug and cushions inside. Great for the little ones to take time out for a nap or quiet play.

Based in Suffolk, The Little Horse Picture Booth provides great entertainment for all your guests. Built into a 1960’s horse box, it’s a standout attraction with three different packages to suit you and a new signature range of props. Two prints are produced within seconds, one to put into a customised guest book and the other for loved ones to keep, plus there’s an online gallery, so everyone can have a memory to treasure. And if the wedding is taking place off the beaten track, there’s no need to worry about power either, as the eco-friendly photo booth works off-grid.

They will also liaise with your venue coordinator and have all the relevant training and insurance needed so you don’t have to worry.

LOOKINGtoo. YOUR BEST 61

Top tips from local experts on how to be the bridal best version of you

GET THE LOOK

One of the key priorities on the road to looking and feeling your bridal best, is not leaving things to the last minute. Some things aren’t a quick fix so it pays to put in the groundwork early to get the best results. Do your research, look online, scour wedding magazines and start putting together a moodboard of inspiration; your suppliers will love you for it as it makes their job so much easier if they can share your vision. Matching your look to the style of your venue is another key consideration if you want to achieve a coordinated effect. A good starting point is to focus on the kind of bride you want to be, traditional or alternative, chic and elegant or free-spirited boho. With so much choice, it’s important to find what suits you and your personality so you can still look and feel like you on the big day – just a more glamorous version.

One of the most important things on your wedding day is to feel like the very best version of you. It’s easy to get stressed about all the details, but once you put your dress on, your make-up and hair are done to perfection and you look in the mirror, you want to see a relaxed, radiant bride smiling back at you.

❤ Follow trends but also remember how things change and always include a nod towards classic looks

https://ajg-photography.co.uk then you need time to get your skin looking it’s best before you consider your make-up trial. Rather than just relying on the advice of someone selling products you need someone to take the time to fully diagnose what your skin needs to look it’s very Victoriabest.”recommends:

Your best

❤ Plan ahead for your beauty treatments but don’t try anything new two months before your wedding in case you have a reaction as you’ll need enough time for it to heal.

❤ For lashes, tans and nails, a couple of days before the wedding is fine, especially if you’re going away afterwards. They will see you through your wedding and honeymoon so you’ll really get your money’s worth.

It’s easy to get lost in all the hurly burly of planning the big day and forget one of the most important things – you; and your other half of course! To enjoy the journey and de-stress the process as much as possible, try to let go of the reins, delegate where possible and prioritise the most important things, like being kind to yourself and not sweating the small stuff. Sleepless nights, stress and anxiety are barriers to becoming the relaxed bride of your dreams so remember to add in some all-important ‘me-time’.

BLANK CANVAS

❤ Make sure you exfoliate to get rid of dead skin cells, which can dull your complexion. Then when you have your trial the make-up will sit so much better on cared-for skin and will last the day and night looking radiant.

YOU

Once the dress is in the bag, everything else can flow from there, from the type of hairstyle you choose, the make-up, jewellery and accessories. If you don’t usually wear much make-up or have had the same hairstyle for years, finding the right bridal look can be daunting. Experimenting or having a drastic makeover just before the big day is never a good idea, after all you want your other half to recognise you when you walk up the aisle. Have a play with some new colour combos, products and styles – get your best girls together for a pamper night and see what you feel comfortable with. Then once you’ve got some ideas together, check out the talent pool of amazing hair and beauty experts in the region to help you realise your vision.

❤ Cleanse properly otherwise serums and creams will just slide off clogged pores and neglected skin.

If you’re looking for that all-important bridal glow, it pays to put in the groundwork. Preparation is key as Victoria Bradfield (www.victoriabradfield.co.uk), one of the region’s leading make-up artists, well knows. She says, “One of the most important tips I can give brides is to get your skincare in order.” She recommends starting at least six months before the big day, including regular facials and professional advice about which treatments are best for you and a skincare regime to use at home. “ Most products take two months to start showing results and

It’s the perfect opportunity to ensure that you and your chosen professional are on the same page. When describing looks, especially details like colours, things can get lost in translation. I therefore advise all my brides to bring some pictures of the kind of thing they would like. It can be images of celebrities, your friends or that classic shot that always pops up online when you search ‘bridal make-up’. Having images of your gown, your bridesmaids’ dresses and your colour scheme is helpful too so your artist can tailor the look to suit your day.

Suffolk-based professional make-up artist Abi May of Abilou Beauty (www.abiloubeauty.com) answers some of your frequently asked questions about the pre-wedding make-up trial.

What is a bridal trial, and do I really need one?

A few months before the big day is a good time as the look will still be fresh in your and your make-up artist’s minds.

ABI’S TOP TREND ALERTS

THE MAKE-UP TRIAL

This year seems to be focused far more on enhancing natural beauty than covering up. Brides are opting for glowing, glasslike skin with a simple eye look and cluster lashes. Nude and pink lip shades remain an all-time favourite however, matte lipsticks have been sidelined in favour of satin finish as this gives the lips a dewy look without feeling sticky.

62

It’s best to have one with every make-up artist or stylist you’re interested in working with and go from there. Once you have decided who you want to work with, one trial is probably enough. When should I book my appointment?

The simple answer is ‘yes you do’! You probably wouldn’t get married after only trying your dress on once, and it should be the same for your make-up. A trial is more than just a practice run, it’s the perfect opportunity to get to know your make-up artist and make sure you click with them. It also give you the chance to assess their skill level and decide if they are the right fit for you. You want to feel comfortable and at ease with them and confident that they can create your desired look. How can I make the most of the experience?

Trials are also a great way to test the staying power of the look you want. I’d recommend booking in the morning on a busy day to mimic how your skin or hair will cope during the wedding. It’s a good idea to have your hair trial on the same day too and wear a top or dress with a similar neckline to your bridal gown to get an idea of how you will look for the wedding. The trial will also help you plan ahead as you and your make-up artist will be able to discuss how much time to allow for you and your wedding party to get ready. You’ll also be able to test all the products to avoid any flare-ups on the big day. It’s best to come to the appointment with just a clean, bare face as we normally do skin preparation before applying the make-up and it helps make the appointment run more smoothly. Does the wedding party need to come too? This is completely up to you, some of your bridesmaids may not wear make-up very often and might like to try it out to see how they feel. I often find that the mother-of-the-bride and -groom tend to have trials to make sure the products suit their skin and it’s a nice bonding experience too. You can also get feedback from each other and work out if anything needs adjusting to suit the day. How many trials should I have?

When it comes to the bridal accessories, as a general rule, less is more! “Unless your wedding gown is very simple and you want the jewellery to be the main focus, I usually recommend small, classic pieces to add a little sparkle but not to overcrowd the look. Think solitaire pendants, diamond studs and fine sparkly tennis bracelets. Once you have chosen your dress and veil make sure you have a photo to show your jeweller so they can suggest what will work with the neckline, sleeves and overall feel of the dress,” adds Emma.

CROWNING GLORY Getting your hair right is vital to feeling relaxed and confident, so now is probably not the time to consider anything too radical. If you’ve always hankered after a short pixie cut instead of your customary long locks, maybe wait until after the big day – remember it’s difficult to fix if you hate it. Stylist Kerry Bywater of BellaRose Hair Design shares some handy pointers to help you get on track. Schedule your trial for eight to 12 weeks before the big day. Have photos of your dress to show your stylist. Take examples of hairstyles you like with you - Pinterest is fab for this! Have a few different looks to try and remember to avoid anything too similar to the rest of the bridal party. Don’t style your hair beforehand. Wash it the day before if possible, make sure it’s completely dry and no straightening or heat styling. Allow one to two hours for your appointment. Have your veil and hair accessories with you. Consider what the weather’s likely to be on the day when you’re choosing styles. Be true to yourself and what you’re comfortable with. You don’t want to look back at the photos and not feel like you! www.instagram.com/bellarosehairdesign

WITH THIS RING

Visit:

There are no rules when it comes to choosing wedding bands, but if you want it to go with your engagement ring, look for something to complement the design. Emma says, “You want your wedding band to enhance your engagement ring, not fight for centre stage! Super fine, diamond-set bands are a massive trend, leaving plenty of room to add more delicate bands for anniversaries and special occasions to create a stack. If your engagement ring has a large/long stone or is a cluster style you may want to look at a curved band to fit around it so they sit neatly together. For something completely unique we can work with you to create a bespoke design made to fit your engagement ring perfectly.”

The all-important ring is going to be in the spotlight on the wedding day too, so make sure your hands are in tip-top condition for those just-wed photos. Fine jewellery consultant Emma Greetham (www.emmagreetham.com) specialises in wedding bands and helping newlyweds-to-be to find the perfect match to complement their engagement rings. She predicts, “White metals remain a popular choice and with the price of platinum being relatively low compared to the alltime high cost of gold, now is the moment to invest in the premium white metal option. That said, yellow gold is enjoying another comeback and is particularly popular with grooms looking for a timeless look.”

❤ LVL lash lift – this is a must! Low maintenance, it includes a tint for your lashes and lasts up to six to eight weeks. If you don’t want to bother with mascara while you’re away, then this is the way forward. HD brows – high definition brows are all about framing the face. I like to describe it as a brow MOT as the treatment is bespoke to you and includes a consultation on shape, waxing/threading and tinting to get the best result possible.

How

Hot tips and make-up advice for summer brides HOT, HOT, HOT can I prevent my make-up melting if the weather’s scorching on my wedding day?

Sharron

Sharron says: We’ve certainly had some hot days this summer. many brides pray for sunshine, especially if they’re getting married outside, you can have too much of a good thing, so it’s best to plan ahead. Here are a few handy hints to help you prepare and maintain a beautiful bridal glow: Splash your face with cold water to close the pores and wait ten minutes before you moisturise. Use a good primer suitable for your skin type. Opt for a less-is-more approach with lighter make-up rather than layers. Matte lipstick, waterproof mascara and eyeliner, sheer eyeshadow shades and translucent setting power are good for a longer-lasting, natural effect. Avoid too much highlighter as it can make you look more flushed and when the weather’s hot you get a natural glow anyway. Finish with a good setting spray. Have some battery-operated, hand-held fans available to keep you and your bridal party cool. Stay in the shade as much as possible and try not to touch your face too much. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Wratten | Hair and make-up artist |

❤ Brow lamination (brow sculpt) – if you’re looking for fuller brows then this is the treatment for you. It lasts the same time as a LVL lash lift and makes brows appear fuller by stretching out the hairs and making them look fluffier.

If you don’t have a big enough garden space, one of the biggest decisions you’ll face is where to pitch the tents. Fortunately, there are some awesome local venues in the region that are ideal for tipi weddings. Alternatively, think outside the box and find a local farmer’s field, campsite, pub, woodland, sports ground or private school, all of which can work brilliantly as magical big-day backdrops. Tipis are great in winter too, especially around the festive season, filled with Christmas trees and twinkling fairylights.

EXPERT ADVICE 71

Jenna says: Tipis are spectacular and add wow factor to the big day, especially for boho and festival-style celebrations. If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, there’s always a bit more organising involved, which a reputable company will help you with, such as sorting out a generator, power, toilets and catering tents. Unlike a traditional wedding venue, you can choose your own interiors, everything from the lighting to the type of tables and chairs. So, if it’s all about the detail, then this kind of wedding could be for you.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Real fires and ducted heating create a cosy, warm enclosed space and the tents can easily withstand rain and snow. We usually also provide a solid flooring base in winter to keep it dry underfoot.

Amy says: We would recommend a chef’s choice selection of canapés as a budget-friendly option using produce which is plentiful to save you money or you can choose your own. Antipasti family service is a great way to help guests mix and mingle and it provides a wow-factor centrepiece. Filled with colour and different flavours, the tables look great dressed with platters of cured meats, cheeses, olives, flavoured breads and salad. Staying with the family service option, for the main course something like our pomegranate lamb with garlic roasted new potatoes, green bean and rocket salad is a favourite.Keeping dessert simple, how about your wedding cake, served with berries and cream or a brownie stack decorated with edible flowers from Norfolk, fresh fruits or garnish of your choice? We’re well known for our brownies and have created many delicious stacks for weddings.

Peonies, sunflowers and soft blush pink tones are perennial favourites for summer weddings. Think blush painted Perspex signage with gold vinyl detailing for an on-trend look. Rob says: The most important thing to remember is that this is your day and there are many ways you can have that magical first-look experience. You may like to share this special time in private with only your photographer for company to capture your reactions. It could be arranged for you both to be either backto-back or behind closed doors, so you can’t see each other, and then have the big reveal. Alternatively, you could walk up the aisle together, blindfolded so all your family and friends get to witness and share the happiness and delight with you when the blindfolds are removed. If you have your hearts set on tradition, each of you can still have your moment being walked up the aisle and have two photographers at either end to capture it all. There are no rules on how you should enter the ceremony and it is entirely up to you how you do it.

The Landings Resort & Spa is a beachfront hotel with a private marina, positioned on Rodney Bay. The Resort invites you to enhance your stay with its all-inclusive package, allowing you not only to sample their extensive food and beverage offerings but full access to the quality fitness centre, unlimited use of the sea kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling gear. During my stay, I enjoyed the resort’s entertainment. Taking in the Caribbean vibes, we enjoyed a delicious barbecue feast on the beach while watching fire throwers and limbo dancers doing their thing on the stage… and did I mention there was rum punch?! If your honeymoon is more of a familymoon, the resort has you covered with its awesome Kids Club and babysitting service. What more could you ask for?

THE LANDINGS RESORT

Enjoy breathtaking, tropical views whilst listening to turquoise waters rolling in with a glass of St. Lucia’s famous rum punch in hand 94

As the St. Lucians say, “No pressure, no problem!” So many tropical islands provide luxury, but only St. Lucia offers this alongside the feeling of joy and laughter courtesy of the amazing people. Such a friendly country, I was so warmly welcomed – and laughed a lot! This is the ultimate location to unwind after planning your big day. If you don’t know much about St. Lucia, it’s an eastern Caribbean Island with a pair of dramatically tapered mountains, known as the Pitons. These volcanic mounds are a spectacular landmark of the island, lush and green and ready for the adventurer in you to explore. St. Lucia’s tropical climate makes it a prime spot for year-round sunshine and warm weather. Prepare for short downpours as those surrounding rainforests bursting with colour need watering.

Caribbean vibes

ST. LUCIAN CUISINE

The revamped, luxurious 7,000-square-foot spa at The Landings features serene therapy rooms, some with outdoor hydrotherapy terraces so you can relax and take in the views after your treatment. As well as enjoying massages, manis and pedis, you can request a hair stylist to ensure your locks have full attention during your fabulous stay. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre with on-site staff and personal trainers to keep you in shape.

If you like to do more than lay on a sun lounger, then St. Lucia has much to offer whether that’s zip-ling through the rainforest or taking a guided hike up St. Lucia’s signature Pitons. During my stay, I enjoyed a visit to Project Chocolat from the well-known Hotel Chocolat. I was blown away by the luscious rainforest location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to the cacao groves. I was then invited to make my very own chocolate bar and tasted some amazing foods from their cacao inspired menu which included cacao mac ‘n cheese and even cacao burgers!

You can’t go to the Caribbean without enjoying the freshest seafood. However, the local specialties are a must try from curried goat to breadfruit (similar to potatoes but sweeter and starchier), and saltfish (stewed fish, which is usually sold dried and salted, with boiled green bananas, locally referred to as green fig).

THE LANDINGS SPA

Whatever your accommodation preference: marina view, beachfront or ocean view, you’ll be blown away. My marina view suite was equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen and private plunge pool. Listening to the birds with a cup of tea in hand in my plunge pool is a memory I’ll never forget.

If you really want to push the boat out for your once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon, then take the transfer from Hewanorra International Airport to the resort via private helicopter. Just let The Landings know and they’ll arrange it all! Furthermore, to extend the luxe package, you can request a butler service to make your stay as carefree and relaxing as possible. FIVE STAR LUXURY

The flight time may be long, however, it was comfortable, and oh boy, does Sri Lanka make up for the time spent in the air. Upon arrival at the airport, we were whisked away at a rate of knots towards our destination of Cinnamon Bentota Beach hotel. My advice? Save the jet lag slumber for a little while longer, as you’d be mistaken to not fully immerse yourself in the changing landscape you’ll experience on the journey there. The hustle and bustle of Colombo is an assault to the senses – albeit an exciting one. Arriving in the morning, we watched as parents took their children to school on TukTuks and workers started their day. However, soon enough, the city rolled away and we were treated to the lush green landscape Sri Lanka is so famous for. Arriving at the Cinnamon Beach Hotel was an altogether memorable experience. A luxurious property nestled in the mesmerising Indian Ocean along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, it has a heritage dating back to the 60’s and was designed by one of Asia’s most influential architects, Geoffrey Bawa. It is the ultimate tropical destination perfect for an art and architecture enthusiast or a lover of exquisite oceans.

With many restaurants on site, Ottimo and Zest are used as a buffet option for all three meals, suffice to say, there’s something for everyone. However, when in Rome and all that – we immediately tucked into curry for breakfast, a habit we all continued throughout the stay.

There were countless reasons why Sri Lanka was my number one bucket list destination – with the tropical island pipping New Zealand, the Maldives and Vietnam to the top spot – but the one that stood out to me is the fact it is a Buddhist country, with a culture based on peace and family.

While the unstable social climate was garnering news coverage at the time of my trip, there is not one point during my stay that I felt any unrest. From the second the tropical heat hit me as I arrived, to the moment I stepped back on the plane with a heavy heart upon my departure, I felt totally secure.

Other highlights for fellow foodies included high tea looking out over the ocean, plus the authentic Sri Lankan cooking lesson and Chef’s Table Experience and dinner – all of which are able to be booked directly through the hotel. If you’re looking for a special honeymoon treat – I’d recommend all of the above!

A GASTRONOMIC DELIGHT

ART AND CULTURE

Well known for its jungles, Sri Lanka certainly didn’t disappoint on this front. Tearing ourselves away from the array of calming pools – and pool bar – we headed to the Lunuganga Geoffrey Bawa’s Country Estate, where we were treated to a tour. If art and culture is your thing – this is one excursion not to be missed. The country house of the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the estate is just a short distance from the hotel, and had been used as a cinnamon estate during the Dutch era and then a rubber plantation under the British. In 1949, the estate was bought by Bawa and was converted into a weekend house where he created a tropical version of a European Renaissance Garden. It took the architect 40 years to complete the house.

A PEACEFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP Cinnamon Bentota Beach offers 16 Suites with unique sets of artworks that were commissioned from Sri Lankan artists as part of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ pledge to support the local arts and crafts. Eight artists were commissioned to depict a theme and record what they felt the name of the suite meant to them - resulting in each suite telling a story of the people and languages of Sri Lanka.

OUT ON THE WATER However, for me, the highlight was most definitely the boat ride on the Madu Ganga and visit to the Mangrove Forest. With an excellent tour guide, we jetted down the river doing our best to spot all the animals that were highlighted as making the river their home. From bear monkeys to water monitors to jellyfish, to kingfisher’s – it was a veritable treat for an animal lover like me. The jury is still out on whether I’m happy or disappointed that the crocodiles kept themselves at bay. And with Mangrove forests stabilising the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides, the intricate root system of mangroves also makes these forests attractive to fish and other organisms seeking food and shelter fromWithpredators.littlestops along the way, it was truly special to see cinnamon being made amidst the forest –and I’d recommend bringing some pocket change as it’ll be a feat to walk away empty handed. If you’re one for a spot of shopping combined with a walking tour of a beautiful town, make sure you head to Galle. We combined this with the river tour, and it was well worth the hour’s drive. A stunning town steeped in history there are views for miles and it would be well worth booking with Walkers Tours, and in particular Ashoka Dissanayke, to learn more about this beautifully resplendent town’s heritage. If you do head to Galle, don’t forget to leave space in your luggage for your journey home. With boutique shops and traditional stores alike, I’d challenge anyone to leave empty handed. If you’re looking for souvenirs or mementos of your trip – this is the place to get them.

ADRENALINE JUNKIE If watersports are your thing, you won’t be disappointed at Cinnamon Bentota Beach. Taking place on the Bentota river, there are endless options from water skiing, to jet skis, banana boats and doughnuts. While first trying my hand at the doughnuts, the jet ski was a definite front runner. With the water so calm and the river so vast, it was the perfect opportunity to open up and let rip!

TOURISM SUPPORT Sri Lanka has had its fair share of upheaval, from the 2004 Tsunami, the terrorist attacks in 2019 and now the national crisis. However, in my opinion this is all the more reason to go and visit this wonderful country, and give its tourism industry the boost it so desperately needs. Not only did I feel safe wherever I travelled in Sri Lanka, I am already planning my next trip back, and this time I may buy an open-ended ticket home…
