A
shared love of adventure and fun helped bring Lucy and Tom together. They first met while working in the French Alps in 2014 during the ski season and after hitting it off, continued their travels together, working abroad before returning home and settling down in Norfolk. “We loved each other’s sense of adventure and contagious fun. The moment Tom flipped me upside down and started dancing to Lionel Richie’s Dancing on the Ceiling I knew he was the one for me,” laughs Lucy. Tom proposed in 2019, a memorable day made even more magical by the weather. “It had snowed which reminded us of when we first met in the Alps,” recalls Lucy. “Afterwards we enjoyed a lovely night with our two dogs at The Olive Branch in Clipsham, Rutland. We decided to get married the following summer but had to postpone it due to Coronavirus and since then we’ve had the most wonderful addition to the family, our now six-month-old daughter Esther,” adds Lucy. They tied the knot on 12th June this year at St Andrew’s Church in Little Massingham, Norfolk followed by a reception at the Field Barn on the neighbouring estate. Read on for Lucy’s account of their big day… 31
We were both super excited when the day finally came. After postponing it for a year, it almost didn’t hit me that it was actually happening until I arrived at the church.
“My amazing natural hand-tied bouquet of seasonal flowers included peonies, veronica, white lisianthus, astilbe, foliage and dried lavender.” I fell in love with my Essence of Australia (D2752) A-line dress because I wanted something nontraditional that was pretty but also modern. It had a beau tiful sweetheart neckline and I had it altered slightly to add straps.
Our vicar Judith was wonderful and made the service really special.
“I don’t usually wear make-up so I wanted something light and natural to make me feel special and pretty but to also still look like ‘me’ and Emma, my make-up artist, got it so right!”
Chrissie did the entire bridal party’s hair and made a fantastic job of it. She was super helpful rounding up the children. I loved my style and it lasted throughout the day and night. 32

REAL WEDDINGS
I
t was fourth time lucky for Becky and Max when they eventually tied the knot at Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk. After having to cancel three previous wedding dates due to Coronavirus, their big day finally came on 17th June this year – and what a day it was! Despite restrictions and disappointments along the way, including having to slash the guest list by almost half, they married in style and celebrated with a cool cocktail of soft pastel colours mixed with a dash of boho and Mediterranean vibes and a good measure of gin!
THE EARLY DAYS The pair met three-and-a-half years ago when Max turned up on Becky’s doorstep as a prospective lodger. “I was looking to rent out my spare room and my friend knew someone who wanted to move back to the area, so I got his number,” explains Becky. Max arrived for his interview on the Tuesday night, stayed chatting for three hours and moved into his room that Friday evening. “He took me out to dinner the following Monday and we’ve been together ever since!”
POPPING THE QUESTION Max proposed at Becky’s favourite place, Heacham beach in North Norfolk, with his son Harry and her daughter SolaraMai in on the act. They’d just arrived at the beach-front holiday home and were paddling in the sea with the children as the sun was setting. “I turned around and Max was down on one knee and the kids were holding a sign asking if I would marry him, I obviously said ‘yes’! I literally had no idea it was going to happen but apparently he had the ring for months,” reveals Becky.
THE PERFECT PLACE Choosing where to wed was easy as Hintlesham Hall in Suffolk was always the front runner. “We had one of our first dates there,” recalls Becky. “I say date loosely as Max was a restaurant manager at the time and he was going for a wine tasting so I went with him. I got a bit tipsy and he found it all very amusing. We had a really relaxing time and loved it so much that when we went back for a meeting about our big day, that was it, we booked it straight away. We loved everything about it and our wedding planner Tracy was amazing throughout.”
LOOKING THE PART Becky bucked tradition when it came to finding her dream dress and went for a sentimental floaty, blush pink number she’d worn before for a couple’s photo shoot which they won in a competition. She explains, “The photographer Helen styled us for the session and I wore a beautiful dress which Max loved. Afterwards he said it was his favourite ever dress, so I got in touch with Helen and ended up finding it online and bought it just in case Max ever proposed! The worst thing was trying to fit into the same dress for a year after my final fitting in lockdown! I tried it on every month in 2020 and then every week in 2021!” She added sparkly straps and bling in the middle for extra bridal glam and wore a pale pink cathedral-length veil for the ceremony and a matching short one for the rest of the day which she embellished with a sparkly trim. “Max bought me 37

REAL WEDDINGS some beautiful sparkly peep toe heels as a gift and I wore a glittery rose gold clip in my hair and Swarovski rose gold Bella earrings. I wanted a simple, elegant look that was floaty, natural and vintage.” The bridemaids wore mink dresses to suit their personal style and Solara-Mai complemented her mum in a pale pink floaty Monsoon dress and rose gold ballet pumps. Max opted for a relaxed Mediterranean-style look with Ralph Lauren plum colour chinos, a white Hugo Boss shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a plum silk bow tie, tan braces and brogues. His son Harry looked dapper in a matching outfit and the groomsmen completed the line up in matching smart casualwear. “Our dog Rudi looked very handsome too in his tan collar and plum silk neckerchief. We had this made form the same fabric as the groomsmen’s face masks and I had the sparkly bling trim from my veil sewn on to it for him. He stole the show!” adds Becky
THE ‘I DOS’ “The ceremony was my favourite part of the day. We were both really nervous and very emotional as we had been waiting for what felt like forever to get to this point and there was a lot of tears from everyone,” remembers Becky. “Seeing Max looking so handsome at the end of the aisle and walking in to our song Feels Like This by Maisie Peters was really moving. We couldn’t stop crying then laughing then crying – it was hilarious. “Solara-Mai wrote and read us a wedding poem which was beautiful, our celebrant Lisa was fabulous and my sister also read a piece from my favourite play Les Misérables. Afterwards, we made sure we had some ‘us’ time with the children for a photo shoot with coloured smoke bombs, races, confetti and the dog!”
LET THE FUN BE-GIN! Picking the theme for their celebration was a no-brainer. Becky explains, “The first time we got tipsy together we were drinking gin, I used to make Max gin cocktails after work and we had a lot of dates at our local gin bar. We then progressed to collecting special bottles and joining the Craft Gin Club. In lockdown we even made a rainbow display of all our coloured gin bottles on the windowsills downstairs, so it was a given that we would have a gin-themed wedding.” The table plan was made of gin bottles, so were the centrepieces, there were flower-filled bottles dotted everywhere and the tables were named after different brands of their favourite tipple. “We and our friends and family collected the bottles over the year. Everyone was completely dedicated to drinking the contents – all in the name of supporting our wedding!” laughs Becky. “We also had help from our local gin bar The Orange Tree in Wivenhoe who saved loads of empties for me. I believe across the whole wedding we used 96 in the end.”
THE PERSONAL TOUCHES The flowers were another important feature of the day. “My mother-in-law took charge of the main bridal party flowers as she runs Lavenham Flower Shed. We wanted a wild, boho, natural vibe and selected carnations in pastel shades of peach, lemon and pink. We also had vintage roses, pale blush peonies and dark green leafy stems mixed with gypsophila.” Other special details included candles as wedding favours for the ladies, mini Alfred Sung aftershaves for the men and everyone was given a little bottle of candyfloss shimmer gin. Their elegant single-tier cake was finished in classic blush pink with ‘Finally!’ etched in rose gold on the side. They made rose gold napkin holders for the tables and had glass jars filled with pastel-coloured sweets. “Max and I and the kids also spent hours 39
baking cherry blossom petals from the tree outside our house to make our own confetti,” adds .Becky
TIME TO CELEBRATE Everyone enjoyed canapés and prosecco after the ceremony, followed by a delicious threecourse wedding breakfast and an evening buffet of fish and chips, mini sliders, mini hotdogs and fries. “We were limited for the entertainment as we only had 26 guests due to Covid. We had a piano player Matt Carter who was great. I added some special songs to his playlist including the one my sister walked down the aisle to and some of our loved ones’ favourites,” adds Becky. “We sacrificed many things to have our wedding and even though it was all very stressful and not what we had planned, we had an amazing, happy day and we get to celebrate again as we’re having an evening reception later on in the year at Hintlesham Hall for all the guests who couldn’t come.” When Becky and Max’s first wedding on 22nd May 2021 was cancelled just six weeks beforehand due to Covid, they held their own private promise ceremony on the day by the river in Wivenhoe during lockdown. Becky explains, “We arranged a whole non wedding day. We wrote our own vows and it was all captured in County Wedding Magazines’ vlog. As a surprise I arranged with Tracy at Hintlesham Hall for us to visit. We all got in the car and drove to our venue for a champagne and cake picnic and we had the whole grounds to ourselves. It was sunny and perfect.”

nspired by the new chandeliers and starlight canopy at Norfolk’s elegantly refurbished Applewood Hall wedding venue, this striking shoot features a black and white colour scheme with accents of midnight purple, gold and silver. The venue’s wedding planner Kiera Goymour, who coordinated the shoot, says, “We wanted to give it a celestial twist reminiscent of a starry night. Think stars, moons, candles and glitter to beautifully catch the light.” Creative elements include star freckles for the bridal make-up, a glittering sequin gown and breathtaking veil covered with hand-embroidered stars and moons. The statement black and gold stationery and dark contrasting floral arrangements set against the dramatic monochrome table settings complement each other perfectly. Outside in the venue’s wedding garden a bespoke lunar love seat stole the show.

teeped in folklore and tradition pearls are a perennial favourite for brides. Inspired by their enduring appeal, make-up artist Victoria Bradfield and photographer Ayshea Goldberg designed this striking shoot around a timeless look, the epitome of understated glamour, perfect for any season. “We wanted to showcase an elegance that would never fade or look dated,” explains Ayshea. Set against the enchanting Butley Priory wedding venue near Woodbridge, Suffolk, the delicate colour palette was based on the soft ivory, pink and silver tones of coloured pearls. The hairstyling, flowing gowns and use of pearl jewellery and hair accessories incorporated a subtle nod to the popular television period drama Bridgerton. The cakes and table styling echoed the colour palette and feel of the design brief, enhanced by an abundance of beautiful flowers. The make-up was designed to reflect a natural bridal radiance and the photography perfectly captured the light, soft mood.

oft pastel colours and romantic styling added to the vintage vibe for this country-garden themed collaboration. Just south of the Cambridgeshire border, the historic Town House in the quaint village of Barley, provided the perfect setting. The wooden-beamed, 16th-century building offers an idyllic backdrop for weddings with the freedom for couples to make the space their own. Stylist and event coordinator Hayley Thurston of Dollys Vintage Tea Party focused on her ethos for sourcing local suppliers and incorporating rustic and traditional elements to create an intimate and individual look. She says, “Sourcing a vintage wedding dress or adapting a pre-loved gown, hiring props and decorations rather than buying them, can all make for a more sustainable, eco-friendly celebration and also evoke the nostalgic feel of weddings from bygone days.” 63

SKIN DEEP
LOVE YOUR LOCKS I’m a wash and go girl and usually wear my hair scraped back in a ponytail as I work outside most of the time. I’ve no idea how to look after my unruly mane to get the glossy sleek shine I want for my wedding day. Can you help? Katrina says: There’s no time like the present to hit the home hair care hard and get those locks looking lush and big-day ready. To get into a good routine, start with how you wash your hair. Always shampoo twice to allow for proper cleansing, even if you’re in a hurry. The first will remove product build up, dirt and impurities and the second cleanses the hair and scalp for that squeaky clean feel. I’d recommend Olaplex for an at-home salon treatment, the whole range is fab with products to suit different hair types. If your hair is particularly unloved or damaged use a treatment once a week, run a bath, light some candles, get a good book and let it soak in and work its magic. Look for shampoos and conditioners to suit your hair type with a UV filter as you’re outdoors a lot. Most people don’t realise the impact UV rays have on your hair as well as your skin so it’s always good to check if the products you’re using include protection as this will definitely help keep your hair looking its best and salon-ready. Katrina Kelly | Bridal hair stylist | www.katrinakellyweddinghair.com
I’ve neglected my complexion while I’ve been working from home and not going out much, so it’s looking rather sad and tired. What should I do to perk it up in time for my wedding in four months’ time? Victoria says: Here’s the advice I give my brides-tobe and anyone wanting to up their skincare game. ❤ Get regular facials every four weeks and allow three months’ lead time. This allows time to address any skin concerns and ensures the best possible radiant results for your big day. ❤ Up your skincare routines at home and follow a good programme advised by your facialist. Make sure you invest time in the run-up to the big day with at-home treatments including massage, exfoliation, masks and hydration. ❤ Peels or any aggressive treatments should be avoided in the few days leading up to your wedding. It’s definitely not the time to be brave and try something new. ❤ Feed your skin from within with healthy food and cut down on salt, processed foods and sugar. I also recommend drinking plenty of water in the preceding days to boost your internal hydration. ❤ The evening before, using your fingertips and knuckles, give your face a gentle massage to stimulate the blood flow. ❤ Get a good night’s sleep and wake up on the wedding morning feeling prepped and ready to glow. Victoria Bradfield | Make-up artist www.victoriabradfield.co.uk 67
SLEEP ON IT Dewtopia is Ole Henriksen’s most potent treatment yet. It works hard to deliver visible retexturising and replenishing results overnight, meaning you wake up to a significantly smoother, renewed and brighter complexion. Containing a 20 per cent acid blend of 10 per cent AHAs and 10 per cent PHAs, these exfoliating components are balanced with its replenishing ingredients of birch sap, cotton water and aloe juice, which soothe, soften and condition. You’ll also sleep easy knowing it’s clean, vegan and cruelty free. So, put uneven texture, dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles to bed! Priced at £46, it’s available at www.boots.com

When you’re adorned in light, soft and smooth fabrics on your wedding day the last thing you want is to have that bubble popped by dry and rough feet tucked into those https://youtu.be/Vck_6T7VrZs Jimmy Choos you’ve been saving for. Rather satisfyingly gross, it will remove dead skin in seven to 10 days, thanks to its dual-layered booties infused with an exfoliating serum packed with plant extracts and alpha hydroxy acids. After wearing them for up to two hours, over the course of the next week to ten days, you’ll be able to see the peel working as dead skin cells, calluses and rough skin flake away to leave soft, soothed and hydrated tootsies. If you dare, click play to see how I got on with the peel. For ultimate results, use twice a month for the first month and then as required. Priced at £9.99, its available at www.superdrug.com

THE CLEANSING EXPRESS
Following the award-winning success of its legendary cleanser, Eve Lom has created a new generation lightweight gel balm cleanser formulated to address the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern woman. When massaged into wet skin, the easy-to-use formula gently transforms from a gel balm texture into a soothing milky cleanser that’s quick to rinse off and leaves skin blissfully soft. Fortified with a high dose of shea butter and nourishing grapeseed oil, it’s clinically proven to moisturise skin for up to 12 hours after use. Using Eve Lom’s signature blend of clove, eucalyptus, hops and chamomile oils, it dissolves impurities and all traces of make-up, including waterproof mascara, in an instant. Check out www.evelom.co.uk
POLISH PERFECTION
Ok, has anyone else noticed how incessant use of hand sanitiser ruins a maincure? Annoying isn’t it? Apparently the alcohol they contain, which is designed to break down germs and bacteria, while protecting us from Covid, unfortunately does the same to nail varnish. Not only that, but it also dries out nails, which in turn causes polish to chip. So, we were thrilled when we found out that the brilliant folk at Barry M have come up with a Sanitiser Proof Topcoat – genius! Stay safe and look fab. A steal at £3.99 it’s available at www.barrym.com, Superdrug and Boots.
SILVER BULLET Adult acne is now the most common skin complaint amongst women, largely due to stress and a building intolerance to chemicals in cosmetic and skin care products. The most common way of treating acne breakouts is with an antibacterial wash, however what these do is wash away the good bacteria along with the bad – not great for the overall health and youthfulness of your skin. Silver Serum from Skin Shop is a smart anti-bacterial skin treatment that contains the patented ingredient MicroSilver, which specifically seeks out and kills harmful bacteria while leaving the friendly stuff intact. Bridal make-up artist Jo Crossley recommends the product to brides who may be prone to breakouts before their big day. She says, “It’s effective and great when you need results fast!” Free from perfume, parabens MI and SLS, it costs £12.95 from www.clarol.co.uk
BE AT PEACE
Cult US brand, Peace Out Skincare has landed in the UK with a mission is to help you bring peace to your skin through effective and fun skincare solutions like the acne dots, pore strips and daily targeted routine solutions like the retinol eye stick. I love the Peace Out Puffy Eyes. Ideal if lack of sleep from excitement the night before the big day has left peepers looking a little tired. Packed with brightening power players caffeine, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid they revitalise tired-looking eyes by helping to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles in just 15 minutes. Priced at £23 for 12 patches and available at www.boots.com
HAIR REPAIR
If damaged hair is cause for concern in the lead up to the big day, reset your locks with a deep hydration. Bored during lock down, I bleached the ends of my hair on a whim – as you do – and over time they have become brittle and dry. So, I gave On A Cloud Baobab Oil Masque, R+Co’s newest launch, a try. The protein-rich, creamy formula renews damaged hair fibres bringing nourishment, strength and elasticity to your strands, while the baobab oil protein rebuilds bonds. Massage into wet hair after shampooing and leave for five to 10 minutes, depending on how damaged you feel your hair is, and rinse. I was pleased how the shine was restored once more and the ends were left feeling smoother and stronger. The new On A Cloud range also includes the Baobab Oil Repair Shampoo, and Baobab Oil Repair Splash On Styler. Priced at £40 the masque is available with the rest of the range at www.rebelbeautybrands.com 69

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley
A
nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York. Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready? Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress. DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure. You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes. 70
Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes. Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry
strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched. When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly. HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair
BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks. Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health. Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel. Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrientdense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter. Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching. Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged. So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry. WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to haircare. The integrity of a product and what
hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture. The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients. ❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily
at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins. STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-or-death situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production. In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day. Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing. Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google! There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things. For further information on specific hair-related concerns and how a trichologist might be able to help you, check out www.philipkingsley.co.uk, where you can also find the full Philip Kingsley product range. 71

ON YOU
lanning a wedding can be pretty hectic, particularly if you’re working to a tight timetable. It’s easy to get lost in a whirl of colour swatches, to-do lists, spreadsheets and appointments and forget one of the most important things – you; and your other half of course! To enjoy the journey and de-stress the planning process as much as possible, try to let go of the reins, delegate where possible and prioritise the most important things, like being kind to yourself and not sweating the small stuff. Sleepless nights, stress and anxiety are barriers to becoming the relaxed, radiant bride of your dreams so remember to add in some allimportant ‘me-time’.
Local experts on how to look and feel your big-day best
THINKING AHEAD
One of the key priorities on the road to looking and feeling your bridal best, is not leaving things to the last minute. Some things aren’t a quick fix so it pays to put in the groundwork early to get the best results. Do your research, look online, scour wedding magazines and start putting together a moodboard of inspiration; your suppliers will love you for it as it makes their job so much easier if they can share your vision. Matching your look to the style of your venue is another key consideration if you want to achieve a coordinated effect. A good starting point is to focus on the kind of bride you want to be, traditional or alternative, chic and elegant or free-spirited boho. With so much choice, it’s important to find what suits you and your personality so you can still look and feel like you on the big day – just a more glamorous version.
FINDING THE ONE Once the dress is in the bag, everything else can flow from there, from the type of hairstyle you choose, the make-up, jewellery and accessories. Although it’s tempting to start looking straight away, it’s a good idea to know where you’re going to marry first as the type of venue can set the tone for the whole day. If you’re planning to theme your wedding, think about that too and the colour scheme to narrow down the search and avoid getting overwhelmed. Although it helps having an idea of what you want, try not to be too fixed on a specific style as bridal boutique owners and their staff are there to help and have a wealth of experience in helping brides-to-be to find the one. Keep an open mind and you may well be surprised! There’s a wealth of wonderful boutiques in the region, where you can be sure of a warm welcome and a wedding ‘fairy Godmother’ to help guide you. HAIR AND MAKE-UP Finding the bridal look to suit you can be daunting, especially if you’re not used to experimenting with your hair and make-up. Here award-winning Cambridge-based hair and make-up artist Kate Fletcher of www.flashkate.com shares some of her top tips to help get you on track: THE DOS DO consider the overall look you want to achieve. What does your dress look like, is it structured, classic, or boho? For a coordinated bridal look your hair and make-up needs to tie in with it. A boho dress looks great with a softer make-up and loose textured hair, while a more fitted dress can work well with classic eyeliner and a bolder lip. DO take into account your usual style, so if you always wear a red lip why opt for a neutral colour for your wedding? If you always wear your hair down, don’t feel you have to have an up do for a bridal look either – you want to feel like yourself on the day. DO remember to factor in the time of year. For summer weddings you should always wear products with sun protection (factor 50 please!) – a good make-up artist will know which ones won’t cause flashback in the photos. In winter you’ll need a heavier moisturiser to combat dry skin. Colours can make a big difference to reflect the seasons too. DO book you hair and make-up trial about three to six weeks in advance. If you do it too soon your hair and skin may be different by the time the wedding comes round. DO have your accessories and veil ready for the trial to try out with your hairdo as it can make a huge difference.
BRIDAL GLOW For that gorgeous natural bridal glow it’s important to have a beauty checklist that’s super easy to follow. Make-up artist Emma Burgess of Norfolk-based Brunetti Artistry uses luxury products that are both vegan and cruelty free for a timeless bridal look that’s not only kind to your skin, but mother nature too. Visit www.brunettiartistry.co.uk and read on for some of her key tips for prepping your skin to make sure you’re looking on point for the big day. ❤ Cleansing, toning, and moisturising are the key to a glowing complexion. Including all three in your beauty regime can help unblock pores and allow your skin to breathe better. ❤ Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and prevent the onset of blackheads but be gentle and don’t use anything too harsh. ❤ Get plenty of sleep, it’s vital and burning the candle at both ends can lead to dark circles and puffiness around your eyes – not a good look for your wedding day! To combat this I’d recommend using a light product such as UpCircle eye cream with coffee and maple to hydrate the delicate under-eye area. ❤ Avoid having a facial too close to the wedding! Although it may seem like just what you need to unwind in the run up to the day, maybe opt for a relaxing massage instead. Facials tend to draw out impurities, which in the long run is what you want, but it can also result in breakouts and redness in the days or even a week after a treatment. ❤ If anything is going to help you get that glow and keep your skin hydrated, it’s a good moisturiser. If you’re thinking of treating yourself, I’d recommend investing in a good one to make you feel special. I really love Helichrysum & Oat Cream by Palm of Feronia, a deeply nourishing Argan oil-enriched cream which helps to promote cell regeneration while allowing your skin to breathe and control shine – for 10% discount visit www.palmofferonia.com and use the code BRUNETTIARTISTRY. 74
www.heatherjacksonphotography.co.uk
… AND THE DON’TS DON’T try a fake tan the day before your wedding, have a test run so your make-up artist can gauge colour choices. Usually it will look better a few days in any way. DON’T feel you have to plaster make-up on, you shouldn’t feel it on your skin and you should still look like you. DON’T expect too much from your inspiration photos. They are useful as a guide but your hair stylist and make-up artist won’t be able to make you look exactly the same! DON’T go for synthetic extensions. Fake hair is heavier and doesn’t bounce like real hair making it obvious that you’re luscious locks aren’t all your own. DON’T overlook your neckline. Whether you’re opting for a strapless, one-shoulder or sweetheart style, the top of your gown is a key shape to keep in mind when it comes to choosing your style. For example, a full-on up do may make you feel too bare with a strapless dress.

LOOKING YOUR BEST LUSCIOUS LOCKS Make the most of your hair trial to make sure you get the right style to suit you then all you have to do on the wedding morning is sit back with confidence, relax and enjoy this special time with your bridal party. Sharron Wratten of Suffolk-based Elegant Hair & Beauty (www.eleganthairandbeauty.co.uk) recommends: ❤ At the trial don’t be afraid to ask for suggestions from your stylist. ❤ Describe your wedding dress or better still, take some pictures with you so they can see for themselves and get a good feel for your overall look. ❤ After doing your hair ask your stylist to take pictures from the front, back and sides so you can see if you want to make any adjustments – and don’t be afraid to speak up! ❤ Keep your hair in good condition with regular trims and treatments. ❤ Go to your trial with clean hair and the colour you intend to have on your wedding day. ❤ If you’re planning to have hair extensions on your big day go for your trial with them in. Many stylists stock clip-in ones and don’t be scared to try them if it helps give you the effect you want. Many styles are created with extensions not just for length and volume, but they can help the finished look last longer too. ❤ Don’t shy away from using hair products to help create the effect you want. They can help keep your style in place and add smoothness or texture and shine. ❤ Wear some make-up (ideally have your make-up trial before your hair on the same day if at all possible). ❤ It can be helpful to have one person with you for a trusted opinion (if the salon allows). ❤ Allow plenty of time for your trial and ensure your stylist has all the time they need on the wedding day. Let’s face it, whether you’re the tall, willowy type or a curvy plus size, there’s always something most of us would like to tweak, even just a little bit! Whatever your shape or number on the dress label, body confidence is a must for that bridal feelgood factor to shine out on the day. Achieving it may involve a few lifestyle changes though. There’s no sustainable quick fix, so allow yourself plenty of time if you’re thinking of embarking on a fitness, healthy eating or weight-loss programme to avoid putting yourself under pressure.

HOT TOPIC Local experts on the shape of things to come
THE WAY FORWARD We’ve postponed our wedding until next year due to Covid and are wondering what trends and influences are likely to be around then. Valerie says: The pandemic has certainly had a tremendous impact on weddings and influenced couples expectations causing a shift in tradition. We have seen a significant move towards more intimate personalised ceremonies and micro weddings, along with growing love for celebrating outdoors with close family and friends. Although the crisis inflicted significant restrictions on weddings, it also inspired many couples to break free from some traditions to concentrate on what’s really important to them and their big day. With an increasing focus on sustainability, more than ever people are mindful of their impact on the environment, reducing waste, keeping costs down and the importance of making responsible decisions. This had led to rising demand for eco-friendly wedding planning and styling which can still be beautiful and glamourous. Here are a few tips on how to incorporate green credentials into your décor and table styling. ❤ Avoid single-use products and plastic that‘s harmful to the environment and local wildlife. ❤ Hire your decorations, table and glassware from a wedding supplier or stylist. It’s cheaper than buying your own and encourages a culture of re-use. ❤ Use vintage, preloved and reclaimed props such as old vases and bottles. Stoneware, copper and brass vessels look wonderful dotted around the venue tables. ❤ For cosy corners and chill-out areas think cane furniture and low-level pallet tables made from reclaimed wood with rugs, comfy pouffes and cushions, great for relaxed outdoor weddings at tipi, barn and marquee venues. ❤ Save energy and set the scene with romantic candlelight using lanterns, vintage brass or cut-glass candlesticks, or recycled glass jars with non-toxic natural beeswax or soy candles. Don’t forget to check with your venue first though to see if they allow real candles. ❤ Dress your venue with handmade decorations including macrame and bunting made from cotton or vintage fabric. Ribbons in your wedding colours look great too and can be used again after the wedding. 84

We created this intimate, sustainable tablescape with local artisan florists Daphne and Doreen Flower Studio (www.daphneanddoreen.co.uk) who provided the stunning floral urn arrangements and beautiful hanging ribbons with tulips. The soft peachy blush colour of the cheesecloth table runner and muslin gauze napkins was achieved by hand-dying the fabric with leftover avocado pits and skins. ❤ For the tables natural hessian, cheesecloth or linen runners and napkins will set off your tableware beautifully and can be hired through event décor and other suppliers. ❤ For the flowers there are many eco-friendly options such as choosing a local sustainable florist, who uses seasonal flowers, foraged greenery or dried flowers in plastic foam-free arrangements. Succulents and plants are another great option and you can always donate your flowers to a residential care home or hospice afterwards and brighten someone else’s day. EXPERT ADVICE GOING GREEN After waiting so long for our big day we want to make it extra special and as eco-friendly as possible. What would you suggest? Sue says: The last 16 months have been a wake-up call for all of us. Covid and lockdowns have made us stop and evaluate our lives more and think about what’s really important. I was always taught that ‘good design is simple design’ and I think now, more than ever before, this is true. As weddings are being held again we all want them to be something to be remembered and those getting married now will be able to tell their children, ‘we had to wait to get married but when we did, we did it well’. Couples want the best wedding ever yet are more aware that ecocredentials are important too. and want to tread lightly on the world, be impactful and create everlasting memories but with less waste and minimal harm to the environment. By hiring large trees, the impact is big, yet the carbon footprint is small as they will live on after the wedding, growing and thriving for years to come!
SWEET SENTIMENTS We’re both great cake lovers and want a real showstopper for our wedding that not only tastes and looks great but is personal to us and reflects our lives and loves – is this possible? Terri says: Absolutely! You can have something bespoke to you and tell your story through your wedding cake, whether it’s by hand-painting key points in your life together on to it or by creating a unique design to reflect hobbies or favourite things. As well as how you want your dream cake to look, it’s important to factor in how many portions you require, so no one misses out on tasting it too. As far as we’re concerned, there are no limits and as much as we are truly happy to follow tradition and fashion, we do love a challenge!
❤ Bringing trees inside, either in the venue or church, makes your wedding very individual to you.
❤ These cool palms look super stylish in the light and airy Lady Elizabeth Wing at Norfolk’s Holkham Hall.

Ready, set, plan!
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
H
Like most venues, ours has a list of caterers that we were asked to choose from for the wedding breakfast. We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner. To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!
through the images and decided on the style we liked (the fun part) and how much we wanted to spend (the not so fun part). We organised video chats with two of them, and Dave, who is very decisive, felt an instant connection with the photographer who was recommended to us by a friend. He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly. He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera! Next issue, hear all about our flowers and my hunt for the perfect dress. If you have any tips you’d like to share, I’d love to hear from you. Drop me an email at Melissab@kdmediapublishing.com
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
PRETTY AS A PICTURE
As some of you may know from last issue we’ve booked our gorgeous venue and were beginning to think about the best part, the food!
Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting. We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists. Once they’d all responded, we looked

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be! My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
I’m hoping to grow my hair longer for the big day, so I can have loose curls with a beautiful hair piece.
Our venue has a lavender field nearby, so we’re planning to have our pictures taken there.
We’re not sure if we’re going to have wedding favours, but if we do, we like the idea of something like this.
A room full of candles is a must!
For my wedding ring, I’ve decided to have a row I never wear make-up, so I’m planning to go for of diamonds that match my engagement ring. a very natural look.
Since we’re getting married in July, Dave is leaning towards a more casual, summery look.
No matter how hard I try, I can’t walk in heels, so I’m going to wear a pair of white trainers.
This popcorn set up is super cute. We’d love to do something similar but with sweets. 87

The darling buds
fo May
Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel. This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade II-listed Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter. The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dogfriendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.
STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy villagegreen views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort,
amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets. A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.
EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage. For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests. The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best
starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day. Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.
EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morrisdesigned stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a well-earned pint makes it all worth it.
BOOK IT: Pub Rooms at The Alice Hawthorn start from £120 per night and Garden Rooms from £140 per night based on two adults sharing on a B&B basis. Visit www.thealicehawthorn.com 94
