Embrace the hygge P
ersonally I love this time of year; nights in snuggled around an open fire, mulled wine simmering on the hob, and old films on the TV. I’m a great fan of ‘hygge’, a Danish ethos that, loosely translated, is all about simplifying things and enjoying the moment, bringing a mix of cosiness, charm and comfort into our lives. Not just for the festive season, but a great idea for everyday life and never more relevant than in the current challenging times. With many couples having to postpone their weddings, some couples are opting to tie the knot regardless with just immediate family and friends, followed by a full-on party later once restrictions have eased. Intimate weddings have always been an option and can be just as special as large-scale affairs, particularly in the winter, with romantic candlelight and a wealth of inviting indoor wedding spaces available at venues across the region. Downsizing your wedding plans doesn’t have to mean compromising on the look and feel of your day. What’s more, we’re here to help you navigate the hurdles and plan your day, your way, with useful tips and advice from local experts on page 96. Flowers are a major part of the wedding décor and can transform anything from the smallest wedding to the grandest venue. To celebrate the wealth of creative talent on the doorstep we showcase a gallery of wow-factor big-day blooms starting on page 57. Looking ahead, from page 63 we also shine a light on what’s set to be hot in wedding catering for all the lovely weddings to come!

NEW NAME
Local wedding photographer Neil Senior has rebranded his business to reflect his personal signature style. After establishing an extensive wedding portfolio as Eternal Images Photography in Sheffield, he’s since moved to the region and has now changed the name to Neil Senior Photography. “Visiting Norfolk as much as we did each year for family holidays, it made perfect sense for us to relocate to the area and make it our home.,” he explains. Now Neil Senior Photography is based near Norwich, covering weddings locally and across the UK as well. “When I am not out photographing weddings I love the North Norfolk landscape so I head out with my wife Natalie and our dog Fenris for long walks along the amazing coastline with my camera in tow. I changed the name of the business for two reasons. Firstly, it was a personal decision to use my surname as a way of honouring family members I’ve lost this year and I also feel it’s more personal.” Visit www.neilseniorphotography.co.uk to find out more. 9
BUBBLES AND BRIDES
Relax and enjoy an indulgent spa break and pick up some handy floristry skills too. Norfolk-based floral designer Alison Mortlock has launched new hen party packages combining rest and relaxation with a handy craft workshop. Staying at The Old Post Office, a luxurious Georgian mansion in the heart of Norfolk, you can enjoy a hen spa weekend of pure indulgence with your friends and family. “Our Bubbles and Brides Hen Package looks to combine indulgence and individuality by focusing on a pampering service with a luxury Hammam spa, chromatherapy lighting and aromatherapy scents and a private workshop to design and create a range of wearable flowers that can be worn on the big day,” Alison explains. With growing demand for intimate weddings you can not only book The Old Post Office as your venue but also the Bubbles and Brides Intimate Package and create stunning floral displays for your big day. “We’re also offering a three-day course on how to design and create your own wedding flowers, from buttonholes to bouquets,” adds Alison. THE BIGGER PICTURE
Cambridgeshire-based make-up artist Paige Richards is embarking on a new chapter in her career. After working as a freelance make-up artist under her own name for the past seven years, she’s relaunching under a new umbrella title Mirror Image and expanding to a bigger studio. The rebrand is designed to reflect how the business has grown and the range of services available. Paige explains, “It’s great to have your name recognised and known within the industry, however I felt that as I expand to a bigger studio with ambitious plans for the future, I needed to take the focus off my name to enable me to create a brand and a community. “Also, it’s not just about make-up and session styling, I’m also a fully qualified beauty therapist and have been for 11 years now. I offer all these services within the studio and the new name, captures the fact that my business is about the whole image.” The change is also in recognition of the talented make-up crew that work with her and their role within the brand family. Paige only moved to the area two and half years ago and has been busy building up new clientele locally. “What better time to rebrand and relaunch than in a new town and new studio!” she adds. Starting out in the industry at the tender age of 16, one of her greatest inspirations at the time was the TV show Britain’s Next Top Model which she later worked on under the wing of make-up artist and mentor Lee Pycroft. Before going freelance she worked for leading brands, make-up artists and salons as well as TV and magazine work. Plans for the future include a Mirror Image education project offering short and long courses in make-up artistry, wedding hair styling and beauty treatments. For weddings, she offers ready-made or bespoke packages as well as beauty services, hen-do make-up masterclasses or get-ready parties. To find out more visit www.paigerichards.co.uk

BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL Eloise and Tom’s rustic wedding was a riot of fun, laughter and colour Images courtesy of Winston Sanders Photography

loise and Tom met during their first term at university in Greenwich, London. Tom was a regular visitor as he was friends with one of Eloise’s flatmates. They hit it off and romance blossomed. Five years later, on the anniversary of them getting together, Tom prepared a whole day of activities with riddles as clues including visiting a city farm, lunch at Eloise’s favourite restaurant Wagamama, a trip to the theatre to see 42nd Street and ice skating followed by dinner and cocktails. “On the way home Tom proposed in the little park opposite our uni halls where we first kissed,” remembers Eloise. They were married at Norfolk’s Waxham Great Barn on 21st September, 2019 and enjoyed a chilled celebration with all their friends and family. Read on for Eloise’s account of their big day... 35

Rather than have readings at the ceremony everyone sang 500 Miles by the Proclaimers and It Must Be Love by Madness. Tom’s singing teacher played the piano throughout and one of my bridesmaids Emily performed Can’t Help Falling In Love as we signed the register.
To go with the rustic look, we hired wooden trestle tables and benches and borrowed some hay bales for extra ceremony seating.
I kept my accessories really simple. Antora made me a veil out of some of the fabric from my dress and I wore a small sparkly hair vine. I loved the beaded mater ial of my dress and the sha pe and style felt very ‘me’. I took it to the wonderful ladies at Antora in Wymondham who mana ged to alter it to look exa ctly how I wanted.
We picked the flowers from Cary’s flower stall on Norwich market and my godmother Fran arranged them. She also styled our tables and made a gorgeous floral backdrop for the ceremony.

hen Shona and Dan met online they quickly discovered that they had plenty in common. “Dan tested my knowledge of country music and apparently I passed the test! We went for drinks and dinner for our first date followed by a trip to Skegness the next day and then the day after that Dan took me out on his HarleyDavidson motorbike, and that was that,” recalls Shona.
POPPING THE QUESTION The relationship was meant to be and Dan proposed on Christmas Day 2017 at Shona’s mum’s house. “I had no idea it was going to happen, despite him acting a bit strange. He even got me a card and wrote in it that it would be a Christmas to remember, but I still didn’t suspect!” After giving her gifts of perfume and jewellery, Dan then presented her a trinket box decorated with pictures of the two of them. “When I opened it and saw the box, I thought it was earrings, I literally had no clue until I saw the diamond ring and Dan down on one knee!”
SETTING THE SCENE They set the date for 7th October, 2019 and chose Bassmead Manor Barns in Cambridgeshire as the perfect setting for their country wedding. Shona explains, “It was the first and only venue we looked at. The charm and beauty of the Rickety Barn sold it to us immediately and we booked our date on the first viewing. We loved that we could have the entire day there.”
LOOKING THE PART Shona looked every inch the beautiful bride in a gorgeous Venus nude dress with an ivory lace overlay. “It was the first one I tried on and I loved it immediately,” she recalls. She accessorised with a gorgeous hairpiece, her grandmother’s pearl earrings and on her feet, what else but her much-loved Corral cowboy boots of course! The bridesmaids wore navy knee-length lace dresses with petticoats and cowboy boots too! Dan and his groomsmen also looked the part in jeans, shirts and waistcoats and Dan stood out in a statement Greeley Western hat.
MEMORABLE MOMENTS “My favourite part of the day was just after the ceremony when we went to a cute little hideaway overlooking the Rickety Barn. It was the first time it all felt real, just me and Dan together, drinking a beer,” remembers Shona. While having their couple shots done in a nearby stubble field they were also able to pose with a passing tractor. “Being country bumpkins, we were well up for it, so Ben, our photographer, flagged down the tractor and snapped some shots of us standing in front of it! It was totally unplanned and was a whirlwind session as it was freezing and threatening to rain,” Shona adds.
THE PERSONAL TOUCHES When it came to the venue décor, they didn’t need to add much as the barn’s wooden beams and wrought iron chandeliers provided the perfect atmosphere. “It was already exactly what we wanted,” enthuses Shona. They decorated the reception area with photos of them and their families and used decorated pallets for the table plan to add to the rustic look. The centrepieces were whiskey bottles filled with flowers on log slices with horseshoes and photos of them together. “We asked everyone to sign a guitar as our guest book as Dan is the lead guitarist in a band. We gave our guests bags of sweets that my mum and I made together and the place names were written on pieces of branch from a tree we cut down in our garden,” adds Shona. 41

REAL WEDDINGS To complement the relaxed country feel, the flowers were chosen to create a meadow effect and included sunflowers, roses and thistles. A family friend made their naked cake, which was displayed on a rustic cake stand with a cowboy and cowgirl topper from Shona’s mum.
TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had an amazing DJ for the evening who played all our favourite country songs. I don’t know if our guests liked it, but we certainly did! Our first dance was to I Cross My Heart by George Strait and we finished the night with Take My Drunk Ass Home by Luke Bryan.” Afterwards they performed a line dance with the bridesmaids and groomsmen, which they’d rehearsed the week before. “It was so much fun and a total surprise for everyone!” Shona adds.
SHONA’S TOP TIP “Do a Monica from Friends and give everyone in your wedding party a list of all the things you’re worried about, with supplier contacts and a plan for the day. That way, they can all muck in and help everything run smoothly so it’s not all on your shoulders.”

A WINTER Charlotte and James’ pre-Christmas wedding was a vision of elegance and style

ames met Charlotte on a night out at her favourite bar Forge in London. They hit it off and Charlotte gave him her number. “I made sure I entered it on his phone correctly because I could tell I liked him,” she recalls. After 89 calls from James later that evening, Charlotte knew he was keen too. “It only took a couple of dates after that for us both to realise it was the real thing!” They got engaged in May 2018. “It was the same day as Meghan and Harry’s royal wedding and James struggled to propose because I was so intent on watching it,” she adds. They set the date for 21st December, 2019 and tied the knot at St Michael’s Church, Woolverstone followed by a reception at the historic Woolverstone Hall. Read on for Charlotte’s account of their big day... I always knew I wanted everything to be in one place and Woolverstone Hall is so beautiful and has a gorgeous church on the estate too.
I made the main floral arch myself using faux flowers I collected over the year and I was so happy with how it looked on the day.
James and his ushers wore traditional morning suits with pink ties and rose buttonholes. My friend Antonia learnt to play James’s favourite song Fall on Me by Bocelli as I came down the aisle. It was so amazing!
I knew I wanted a classic dress with a floral twist, that I could wear all day and evening, and that wouldn’t date for the photos. I decided to design it with the help of the talented Zara at Zara Makes. Her team made it from scratch, including the lace, and it turned out to be more beautiful than I had dreamed. The confetti walk coming out of the church was great fun and we got some lovely pictures.
My sister was maid-of-honour and had a dress similar to mine while the other bridesmaids wore silk slip gowns by Ghost. 48
REAL WEDDINGS
Our flowergirls wore Little Eglantine silk dresses with pink blush sashes and the pageboy had matching knickerbockers – all very traditional!
Ivy Floral Events made my bouquet and also did the cake and venue flowers. We named our tables after the 12 days of Christmas.
We had a quartet singing Christmas Carols as guests arrived at the reception with some jazz numbers later in the evening.
The venue was very flexible. I like to design things myself and we were able to organise everything and choose our own suppliers. They also didn’t charge corkage which was very handy for our open bar! Kerry from Endless Story made a stunning table plan using her ‘Grand Affair’ backdrop.
49
We were very lucky to have my uncle John as the master of ceremonies in his uniform and he let us use his ceremonial sword to cut the cake!
CHARLOTTE’S TOP TIP Delegate tasks, and include all your family – that’s what it’s all about after all!

ooking for something out of the ordinary for your big day; how about a naked tipi to make the most of the great outdoors? Forest Lodge Weddings in the heart of Thetford Forest, provided the perfect setting for local suppliers to set the scene for this whimsicial woodland wedding shoot. Amie Price from Norfolk-based Firefly Tipis explains, “The idea behind it was to create something a little different. We came up with the mad idea of doing a naked tipi shoot late afternoon, early evening, and teamed up with Bride & Bloom of Brandon who supplied the flowers, dresses and models.” Using just the wooden frame of one of their giant hat tipis they worked their magic with a myriad twinkling fairylights to create a romantic outdoor space, complete with bar area, a firepit, Chesterfield furniture and other decorative props. “We were really happy with the overall look and when the light begin to fade, the naked tipi looked amazing,” adds Amie. Imagine having an intimate al fresco dinner or a chill-out area under the stars; the possibilities are endless! 53

The reason for the first wedding bouquets was far from romantic. Brides often carried a bunch of heavily scented herbs and garlic, usually to mask more unpleasant smells! 57

CATERING
What’s cooking All the latest on wedding catering
T
he food is one of the most important parts of a wedding – get it right and your guests will remember your big day for all the right reasons. It accounts for a major slice of the budget too, so it pays do your homework well. As the wedding industry gears up for the year ahead, the ripple effects of 2020 will continue to influence the shape of things to come – not least in the catering sector. Key issues, such as the environment, sustainability and the provenance of the food we eat have been brought into even sharper focus, fuelling demand from newlyweds-to-be for vegetarian and vegan options, locally sourced and seasonal produce to help lower the carbon footprint of their day. Ian Dickson of Ipswich-based Prestige Bars & Catering says, “More and more of our couples are asking where we source our food from, is it local, is it fresh rather than frozen and do we use local suppliers? Fortunately, this is something we’ve always done in order to keep our food miles as low as possible and being in Suffolk we’re very fortunate to have high quality producers on our doorstep. The other thing we’re seeing is demand for food in season rather than strawberries in January and broccoli in June!”
IAN'S FOODIE FORECASTS ❤ Sharing platters, great while traditional-style buffets are off the menu, served by one nominated guest at each table to avoid plates and spoons being passed around. Still a sociable way of eating while staying safe! ❤ Informal, relaxed dining with big-pan dishes such as our paella, fajitas, noodles, chilli and loaded nachos, cooked in giant pans and served individually to each guest. ❤ Tapas, increasingly popular before lockdown, is set to be the next big thing moving forward during the year ahead. ❤ Hamper boxes for guests to have in their own homes or support bubbles have been a hit while restrictions on weddings have been in place. Ours are packed with a smorgasbord of tasty treats, delicacies include smoked salmon and piquant peppers to start with, smoked chicken, turkey, ham, brisket of beef with olives, humus, flatbreads, smoked fresh tomatoes and a mix of cheeses and gourmet biscuits, all ready to eat and share with up to six people – great as a virtual wedding breakfast, for hen and stag night celebrations or for any loved ones who can’t be with you on the big day. ❤ Gin looks set to remain one of the top tipples for weddings in 2021 but with more cocktails rather than straight G&Ts. The classic Tom Collins cocktail and raspberry gin fizz have been popular and Ian predicts we’ll be seeing plenty more fruit-based gin drinks.
Ian’s top tip
Choose the style and type of food to reflect you as a couple and what you like, rather than trying to please everyone. You don’t have to stick to tradition, the menu should reflect the personalities of the two most important people – you!
Visit www.prestigebars.co.uk 63
Putting your own personal stamp on your wedding day is a key trend that’s here to stay. Whether it’s a nod to your local area, your travels, loves and likes, you can celebrate your favourite things in host of different ways. Here’s how...
TIME FOR TEA As a nation of tea-lovers, The Teapod ticks a lot of boxes for the big day. As well as delicious organic teas, it offers a range of goodies, including milkshakes, vegetarian sweet and savoury crêpesand vegan waffles, all made-to-order. The supply chain is kept as close to home as possible, so it’s kind to the planet too. What’s more the pretty mobile trailer provides a great backdrop for the wedding photos. Owner Therese Coyne says, “The trend towards eco-friendly weddings fits well with our offering and we cater for special dietary requirements too.” She’s also noticed a growing demand for more intimate weddings. “In the current climate that’s not a surprise, but it’s not necessarily just a matter of budget. Couples are wanting to focus more on the things and people that really matter to them, their nearest and dearest, not forgetting their pets too!” In response to demand for eco-friendly favours, she recently set up a sub-brand PODcrafts offering custom tea blends so guests can take home the newlyweds’ signature tea as a memento of the day. Visit www.theteapod.co.uk
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY
Psst...
To complement a more relaxed vibe, the company’s vintage horsebox bar is a great addition to the party. It can be themed as a cocktail, gin or Champagne bar or come fully stocked with all your usual favourite tipples. 64
Norfolk-based Trio’s Catering & Events prides itself on using the freshest local ingredients from across Norfolk and Suffolk. Owner Natalie Creegan says, “We find that lots of our wedding couples are keen to showcase the area by featuring local produce as part of their wedding feast.” With continued love for a more laid-back, informal style of catering, grazing boards are set to remain popular for 2021. “Literally a feast for the eyes and that’s before you taste them! They can be adapted to reflect each couple’s favourite foods and we offer veggie and vegan boards too, so all tastes are catered for. Hot options can be added, served as a banquet or on smaller platters to each individual table,” adds Natalie. Not only a taste sensation, the boards are decorated with fresh fruits and flowers and can even be themed to create a spectacular centrepiece on the day. For the evening food, wood-fired pizzas are ideal for feeding a crowd; perfect for a chilled festival atmosphere. Visit www.trioscatering.co.uk
CATERING
THE EXTRA TOUCHES Canapés are great for keeping hunger pangs at bay during the photos before the wedding breakfast is served. We’re not talking just any old tired morsels though, think bit-size delicacies, mini burgers, savoury tartlets or a fusion of flavours to reflect your lives and loves.
Add the personal touch to your celebration with outdoor drink stations serving killer cocktails or local beers and ales – perfect for a chilled summer wedding. Give your loved ones something to remember with tempting treats throughout the day. Ice cream always goes down well with guests of all ages; perfect for al fresco drinks receptions post-vows or as an alternative to the customary dessert. Served from a traditional van, it’s sure to attract a crowd. Visit www.polkadotsandmoonbeams.co.uk
LATE-NIGHT MUNCHIES Don’t forget the evening guests! How about a good old fish and chip van to feed a crowd? Steaming mugs of hot chocolate with marshmallows and gorgeously gooey smores toasted over a firepit are always a good idea to ward off the night chills.
DRAMATIC DESSERTS Desserts are increasingly stealing the show. Couples are looking to up the wow-factor with whole tables beautifully styled and groaning with help-yourself sweet treats. Dramatic centrepieces such as macaron towers, croquembouche and doughnut walls are popular too. 65

THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress
n w o g F
ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.
78
What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an
FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!
It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.
What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.
Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.
Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.
Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw
her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com
“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews
“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey
Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker
GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve 90

Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson

WHAT’S HOT
What type of bridal make-up is likely to be trending in 2021? Lyndsay predicts: It’s all about the natural effect; skin looking like skin, healthy and glowing. For eyes we’ll be seeing more earthy tones, smoky brown, gold and rose gold, pink and cream with a lightly lined eye. Natural eyelashes are in, with a slick of good waterproof mascara, or alternatively light and wispy false lashes. For lips and cheeks think nude, peach or pink shades to reflect a fresh-faced look for spring and summer. Cream blushers and highlighters are set to be popular but only light contouring. The trick is for your make-up to bring out the best of your natural features without being over the top so you end up not looking like you. Eyebrows will be more natural and fluffy, but still neat and defined if you prefer, matching your own brow colour as closely as possible. For the finishing touch, I think lip glosses might also be makinga comeback.

Leading Suffolk make-up artist Victoria Bradfield designed this romantic bridal look for a magical midsummer’s night styled shoot featured on page 93 this issue. To recreate it, here’s her step-by-step guide. ❤ I decided to keep Jade’s make-up quite simple and flawless to complement the soft lilac tones in her hair and the fairytale theme. I usually start with the eyes to avoid having to redo the base in the event of any flecks of shadow, mascara or liner smudges; especially helpful if you’re doing a smoky eye look. ❤ I always prep using Katherine Daniels Micellar Face & Eye Make-up Remover to make sure the skin is completely clean. ❤ Then apply primer, I like the Laura Mercier range and if extra pore control is needed I add a little Benefit POREfessional. ❤ Cover any dark circles, redness or blemishes around the eyes with NARS Creamy Concealer and set with a skin-tone eyeshadow on the lid area and up to the brow. Now you can start adding in colour. ❤ Use Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Primer on the lid to help the eyeshadow really pop then from the brand’s Carli Bybel Palette apply Mandala (lilac shimmer) over the entire lid. ❤ Add a slight flick with Blacktrack by MAC eyeliner; once set this liner doesn’t move! ❤ Instead of using a strip, I added in individual cluster lashes to build up the outer edge with a more subtle effect towards the inner corner, plus they give lashes a lovely fluffy look. ❤ Brows were brushed up and fixed with clear brow gel, using Charlotte Tilbury Brow Lift to fill any gaps. ❤ To keep the skin matte I used Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation fixed with translucent loose powder by Laura Mercier with a sweep of NARS Laguna Bronzer and Gaiety Blush to finish off. ❤ MAC Frost Lipstick in Bombshell is a lovely shimmery pink shade and complemented the look perfectly. ❤ Finish with my go-to setting spray Urban Decay All Nighter, a kit essential. uffolk’s Helmingham Hall is the stuff that wedding dreams are made of. A magnificent stately home set within a 400-acre deer park, the Grade 1 listed gardens provide an idyllic setting for outdoor weddings. Inspired by the pictureperfect backdrop make-up artist Victoria Bradfield got together a team of local suppliers to create this stunning photo shoot. She explains, “I’d wanted to do a styled shoot at the venue for such a long time. I knew that we could create several different looks for the day to reflect the versatility of the grounds and the gardens to suit a range of themes.”
“Model Jade dyed her hair a soft lilac to tie in with the beautiful wild flowers and I added pastel coloured clip-in extensions to add volume. Her hair was tonged and loose pieces pinned into place over a soft looped braid using Osis texture spray.” – hair stylist Lynnette Chasmer

The cakes were designed to fit in with the mood of a pretty summer wedding.
“We created a decadent feel with rich colours, dramatic dresses and a crown to portray a slightly Gothic and modern fairy queen. Using the large mirror as a centrepiece added to the magical fairytale feel. I kept the makeup soft and natural to enhance the model’s features while complementing the ornate hairstyles.” – Victoria
The shady orchard was used as the setting for a whimsical throne and princess, a perfect spot for real wedding photos too.

HOT TOPIC Local experts on small intimate weddings
MICRO MAGIC
We’ve postponed our big day until late summer 2021 but don’t want to wait that long to tie the knot so we’re going to get married as soon as possible with just our immediate family and friends. How can we make our micro wedding just as meaningful as the main event? Ian says: All weddings should be memorable and the scale of the occasion shouldn’t affect your enjoyment and memories. The most important people on the day are you, the happy couple. Just because the guest list is smaller, doesn’t mean you’re not able to share your day with all your close family and friends either. Intimate weddings can be special for many reasons: ❤ Everyone there gets to share all the finer details you’ve added to personalise your day. ❤ You get to spend more time with those closest to you. ❤ It may be less stressful and overwhelming as the focus can all be on you rather than a big crowd of guests. ❤ You can enjoy everyone’s company and make them feel truly involved. ❤ You may be able to add extra finishing touches that otherwise you might not have been able to afford, such as special floral arrangements, standout wedding transport, something a little different or extravagant. Don’t forget even though not everyone can be there with you in person, they can be there virtually, on screen via video or web links. What’s more you have your celebration later on to look forward to
with all those friends and family who couldn’t be there on the day. Small doesn’t have to be less special, it just means it can be more bespoke and unique to you. Ian Smith | Owner and event coordinator | www.beausandbelleseventplanners.co.uk
SMALL, BUT PERFECTLY FORMED
We’re planning to get married early next year and want our intimate wedding to be the best day of our lives. Is that still possible with the current restrictions? Iona says: We found the smaller autumnal weddings that took place before the second lockdown weren’t affected by the restrictions on guest numbers. Kimberley Hall is more than a venue it’s a much-loved family home full of character and with a variety of beautiful rooms that can be used throughout the seasons and adapted to suit celebrations of all sizes. You can also choose to have an intimate wedding followed by a celebratory party at a later date. Whatever you do, it’s important to be able to add your own personal and creative touches, such as family photographs, bunting, flowers, decorative foliage or a seasonal display. Our Music Room is perfect for this with a big arched window and views of the terraced garden that looks on to the lake. Full of natural light, you can enjoy the warm glow of the setting sun and a roaring open fire as you dine beneath the 18th -century plasterwork and magnificent chandelier. EXPERT ADVICE
BACK GARDEN BEAUTIFUL
THE SWEET STUFF
Is it worth having a cake for our micro wedding as we’re only having our closest family and friends and we wouldn’t want it to waste? Caz says: Whether you’re planning to have a big reception later on or just prefer the romantic intimacy of a smaller wedding, a beautiful wedding cake is always a great idea. Just because your downsizing your guest list, doesn’t mean you have to compromise on the style or quality of what many consider to be the centrepiece of their wedding celebration. A smaller cake can be just as stunning and eye catching in whatever style suits your theme. The current trend for taller cakes allows more scope for your designer to get creative too. However, if you’ve always dreamed of a multi-tiered masterpiece but feel you can’t justify that amount of cake for your micro wedding, one option is to use dummy tiers to achieve the look. This isn’t necessarily a much cheaper option as a dummy tier still needs to be iced, decorated and put together with the same amount of skill. It does mean less risk of waste though and personally we pride ourselves on the fact your guests will never know the difference! Another alternative is to have a tower of mini cakes or cupcakes either with or without a top tier for cutting. They can be decorated to match your theme and can be as ornate or simple as you like. These individual portions are ideal as they can be easily served to your guests or they can help themselves. Ask your cake designer for some individual boxes too so you can deliver some to family and friends who can’t be there. If you decide to opt for a smaller simpler cake, you can always provide extra sweet treats such as edible favours for your guests or a dessert table with individual servings. Geo cake hearts and cakesicles (a tempered chocolate shell filled with cake mix, ganache or other deliciousness) can be decorated in a variety of ways to match your style and colour scheme. Iced biscuits can be personalised with guests’ names and wrapped individually to double-up as place settings and favours to be enjoyed later. Caz Dennis | Cake maker | www.facebook.com/cazscakesandsugarcraft
We’re going ahead with our wedding ceremony and would like to do something to mark the occasion, without getting carried away and blowing the budget for our big day next autumn. What would you suggest that’s simple but memorable? Alison says: One of the many reasons couples choose smaller weddings is to break away from tradition and set their own style to reflect their personalities. An intimate relaxed wedding gives you the chance to really interact with your guests, allowing more time for quality conversation. An intimate get together doesn’t mean basic, just more personalised. You could even use your own home, a place that’s meaningful to both you and your guests. Look at all the space available, not just the tables, and think how you can turn it into a stunning backdrop. Consider lights, plants, flowers, fabrics, and anything else that will create an ambience such as an overhead floral arrangement to coordinate with the setting. Take the inside out, if the weather’s fine, with sofas and rugs to create inviting outdoor areas in the garden where your guests can relax and use stunning floral displays to link the areas together. Adding small, memorable touches is much simpler in a smaller space and using family heirlooms such as vintage china, can all help to make your day extra special. WINTER TRAVEL
With travel rules and regulations constantly changing, newlyweds and nearlyweds will be looking to the UK to celebrate post-vows, and minimooners will be spoilt for choice when sticking to destinations closer to home; here’s two to whet your appetite: Situated deep in the Scottish Highlands, 57 Nord occupies a dramatic position between three ancient sea lochs surrounded by the majestic Kintail Mountains. With floor to ceiling windows that frame the panoramic views stays here are largely elemental, particularly in the autumn and winter months when the weather is ever more startling. Cosy up by the fire and watch the weather roll in with a dram of specially selected whiskey from the honesty bar and tuck into the hamper of artisan goodies. There are ample wet weather activities for epicureans: from the neighbourhood Fairy Tale Distillery to the internationally acclaimed Talisker; fine dining at Kinloch Lodge or fresh crayfish cooked at home from Duncan, the neighbourhood fisherman. At night watch the famous Eilean Donan castle light up from the cottage and spend the evening on a tour of the night’s sky with the help of the in-house guide – how romantic!
