Out with the old, in with the new W

ho would have dreamed that a year on, social distancing, face masks and hand sanitiser would still be part of the big-day conversation. One thing to come out of the past ‘annus horribilis’ though is proof, if proof was needed, that love wins no matter what. When the rules have allowed, some people have grabbed the chance to marry on and from pages 38 to 48 we feature two happy couples who did just that. Their joyous celebrations are a triumph of love over adversity and show just how special an intimate wedding can be. For those having to reschedule and all the newly engaged couples out there, your big day will come and we’re here to help with all the inspiration, latest trends and advice you need. On page 79 local experts share their insight into key wedding trends for the year ahead. With sustainability and eco-friendly credentials an increasingly important priority, it’s never been more relevant than now to shop locally. So from page 57 we shine a light on what’s available around the region in the handmade sector to help reduce the carbon footprint of your day. And if you’re looking to nail your wedding day bridal style, we’ve got you covered from pages 60 to 77 with everything from hair and beauty, to fashion and accessories. Packed with local suppliers, magical venues, regional news and all the regular features, honeymoons, inspiration and more, we’re excited and hope you are too.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

Combine the best of the old with the new and create your own family heirloom to treasure forever. Woodbridge Jewellery Workshop offers special courses for newlyweds-to-be not only to make your own unique wedding rings, but also create a lasting memory. Run by husband and wife team Rick and Maggie Chapman, the courses are held at their Grade II listed building in Woodbridge, Suffolk. On one of their courses the couple used a 22-carat gold bangle the bride had inherited to make their rings (pictured). Maggie reveals, “We melted the bangle and prepared the gold in advance ready for them to use. The beautiful shaped ring was made by the groom to fit around the wedding band and we set it with diamonds afterwards. After all the uncertainty surrounding their wedding plans, they were delighted and can treasure their rings and the experience of making them.” Go to www.woodbridgejewelleryworkshop.co.uk for full details.

EDITOR LOVES

This showstopping creation by the aptly named Wonder Cakes of Cavendish in Suffolk combines a mix of dried foliage and sugar blooms with touches of warm gold and delicate lace work inspired by the bride’s dress. The top floating tier adds an extra magical feel; perfect for a romantic candle-lit barn wedding. Visit www.wondercakes.co.uk and turn to page 79 for more of their amazing designs and top trend alerts.

Worstead Estate has unveiled one of North Norfolk’s newest wedding attractions The Woodyard. Located in the private 300-acre Worstead Park, the former sawmill has been sympathetically restored to capture its long history and boasts a lake, walled garden and picturesque setting. The venue includes a thatched barn and surrounding outbuildings, beautifully renovated with modern amenities. Fully licensed for weddings, The Woodyard has a ceremony room and can host up to 110 people. What’s more, with three period cottages on site for accommodation, there’s no need to drive home at the end of the night. The venue is due for completion in March and is currently taking bookings, check out www.worsteadestate.com/weddings to find out more.

Raising the roof

Trend alert

Get set to be wowed by a flurry of creative wedding stationery this year. Jane D’Arcy of Norfolk-based Little Pea Designs foresees plenty of new and exciting ideas on the horizon. She predicts, “This will not only be in terms of left-field ideas and designs, but also more colour and vibrancy as couples will be be looking for celebrations on a new level coming out of lockdown. I think there will be more art house styled fonts being used too, moving away from the traditional style.” 9

GREENER GIVING

With sustainability and green credentials high on the agenda for 2021 weddings and beyond, these eco-friendly beeswax food wraps are a cool alternative to traditional wedding favours. Handmade by Bev Rogers in Woodbridge, Suffolk, they come in a choice of size and fabric with personalised labelling and the beeswax used is sourced locally from hobby beekeepers in Suffolk and Norfolk. To up the green credentials further, Bev has also introduced a vegan, plant-wax option, which is soy- and palm-oil free. Her beeswax candles, made in the shape of old-fashioned beehives, are also now available as wedding favours, complete with bespoke labels. Visit the website www.bevsecoproducts.co.uk for further details.

New pop-up staycation hotspot

Staycations are booming and where better than East Anglia for a romantic getaway once restrictions have eased? We’re blessed with a wealth of riches from coast to countryside and this summer a brand new attraction is due to launch in Norfolk. Introducing Camp Elwood, a pop-up camping site and lodgings offering the perfect escape for a reviving break. Nestled on the North Norfolk coast you can get away from it all and discover Holkham’s unspoilt beaches, stroll through the pinewood forests and snuggle around a roaring campfire at night toasting marshmallows! Accommodation includes deluxe bell tents or you can bring your own and pre-book a Campervan spot or pitch and park plot. There’s a range of activities and workshops available too, everything from wild swimming, paddle-boarding and canoeing on the lake to cocktail masterclasses and more. Open from July 26th to August 9th, visit www.campelwood. com to find out more.

CAMBRIDGE VENUE LAUNCH

READY, STEADY, MARRY!

Heacham Manor Hotel can’t wait to christen its new wedding space. Located close to the Victorian seaside town of Hunstanton on the North Norfolk coast, work on The Pavilion was completed in December 2020. The launch has been hit by delays and lockdowns due to the pandemic, but the first wedding is in the pipeline. Bookings have already been made and a virtual showround is now available for potential couples wanting to get married there. Special features of The Pavilion include a private enclosed garden with a pagoda, due to be installed in the summer. With a neutral colour scheme throughout and flooring that can easily be adapted for a dancefloor, the versatile space is big enough for up to 150 people. Designed to cater for a range of big-day needs, the main function room can be set out to create smaller more intimate spaces. The venue also has its own private cloakrooms an exclusive lounge bar and will be licensed for duo ceremonies. Visit www.heacham-manor.co.uk for further details.

Festive fever was running high at Carla and John’s winter wedding Images courtesy of Daniel Lightening Photography

arla and John met while working for the same City of London company and after bonding over a shared love of Espresso Martinis they were best friends for a long time before they started dating. “I was attracted to John’s caring nature and I think it was my sense of humour that won him over!” says Carla. He popped the question on a night out in London revisiting all their old haunts. “We had dinner and then cocktails, finishing up at the venue where we had our first date, looking out over the night skyline,” remembers Carla. “It was a complete surprise as I thought I was going on a girls’ night out with my friend, who turned up once I was ready, in her pyjamas, to look after the children!” They tied the knot at Elms Barn in Suffolk on 21st December 2019 and opted for a festive winter theme. “We loved that Elms Barn had accommodation for family to stay and we didn’t have to travel between ceremony and reception venues. It also had a marquee on site for drinks, a traditional barn for the service and reception and it was local to our family farms,” adds Carla. Read on for her account of their day... 33 

PLAN B.EAUTIFUL Although Sophie and Chris’ wedding wasn’t quite what they planned, it was just as joyous Images courtesy of Him & Her Wedding Photography

38

REAL WEDDINGS

I

t was love at first sight for Sophie and Chris. After chatting online for while they decided to meet face-to-face and the rest, as they say, is history. “I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true,” confirms Sophie. “We had our first date in Ipswich town centre at a little coffee shop and ended up talking for hours. We hit it off straight away as we had so much in common and we both wanted to meet again. After that it didn’t take long for us to feel like we’d known each other for years!”

POPPING THE QUESTION Chris proposed in May 2019 while they were on holiday in the Peak District to celebrate the three-year anniversary of their first date. Sophie recalls, “Chris wanted to climb Kinder Scout, one of the highest and most challenging peaks. We arranged to do it, not realising it was literally a rock climb to the top. We were both shattered when we reached the summit and as I was standing at the edge looking at the scenery he called me over and got down on one knee. I burst into tears and a group of hikers nearby gave us a round of applause. It was a total surprise and we spent the whole two-hour trek down talking about the wedding!”

PLAN B Shortly afterwards they started planning their big day and booked a large countryside wedding venue for 10th August 2020, little knowing what was around the corner. When COVID first struck they agreed to sit tight for a while in the hope it might all blow over by the summer. “Oh how wrong we were!” sighs Sophie. “We decided in May that we’d move the whole wedding to June 2021 as we both thought it would be ok by then. Come September though, with infection cases on the rise, we took a long hard look at our plans and decided to go for it and have our 2020 wedding, as all we really wanted was to get married.” They whittled the guest list down to nine key family and friends and notified the other 41 day guests and more than 60 loved ones they’d originally invited for the evening do. “Unfortunately our original venue was far too big for such a small wedding, so we immediately started researching intimate venues that would still fit our style. We came across Jimmy’s Farm, which I’m ashamed to admit I’d never actually visited before, despite living only two minutes away! We went for a tour around the restaurant and the grounds and instantly fell in love. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and is the perfect size for an intimate ceremony and the grounds are lovely too. It was just what we wanted and it fitted our rustic, countryside theme perfectly.” They booked the date for 3rd December and got cracking with the arrangements in order to pull it off in time.

LOOKING THE PART The search was then on for Sophie’s dream dress. “I already had an exact picture in my mind of what I wanted and I bought the first one I tried on.” She had her heart set on a vintage bohostyle, halter neck dress with detailing on the top and a not too voluminous skirt. The Bridal Lounge in Hadleigh happened to send her an email showcasing some of their sale dresses at the time and one in particular, ELIA by Aire Barcelona Bridal, caught her eye. “It was exactly what I was looking for so I immediately booked an appointment.” As soon as she tried it on, she knew it was the one and chose subtle accessories with just gypsophila in her hair so as not to detract from the dress. “My mum also bought me a lovely white fluffy jacket to wear in case I felt cold as it was a winter wedding.” Unfortunately, Chris didn’t get chance to sort out the suits before rescheduling their wedding and shortly afterwards the country went into lockdown so fittings weren’t available. Sophie says, “We decided to not worry too much about the groomsmen matching, after all as long as they were there that was all that really mattered.” 39 

REAL WEDDINGS THE PERSONAL TOUCHES Sophie handmade almost all the decorative details. The favours were goodie bags with hand sanitiser and personalised face masks and all the girls had their own gifts, which included personalised Converse shoes to wear on the day and dressing gowns for her mum and sister to wear while they were getting ready. “I was very lucky to be the first bride to use the newly created Hay Barn bridal suite at Jimmy’s Farm. Situated across the way from the restaurant, it’s beautifully decorated and was a really lovely place for us to get ready and chill out before the ceremony,” enthuses Sophie. The wedding flowers were artificial and as a special personal touch, in honour of both her nanas, she tied their wedding bands to her sister Lauren’s bouquet and their engagement rings to hers. “It felt nice to have a memory of them so close to us on the day,” she explains. She also made the men’s buttonholes and for added greenery used flocked eucalyptus garlands for the table decorations. They had a long table separated in the middle for their guests while they sat at their own table at the top. “It was lovely as it felt like we could see and talk to everyone,” she recalls. They’d already booked Fiona of Moo Moo Cakes in Suffolk for their wedding cake. “We chose her as I’m intolerant to gluten and dairy and she makes the most amazing cupcakes for people with special dietary requirements. We just decreased the order but only by a small amount, as you can never have too much cake,” laughs Sophie. They also had their original harpist to play as they walked down the aisle pre- and post-vows.

“Walking back up the aisle together as a married couple to the theme from Up will always be one of the favourite moments of my life.” – Sophie The Christmas decorations were already up at the venue which added an extra cosy festive feel and the food was great too. “We had roast dinner with a choice of trifle or brownie for dessert. It was delicious, the service was amazing and they were so accommodating to my dietary needs,” Sophie adds.

BIG-DAY SWITCHES When it came to the order of the day, they had to do things a little differently as it was a winter wedding and the ceremony wasn’t until 3pm. “Because it would be dark afterwards, we decided to have a ’first look’ moment. It was raining so we did it in the celebration tent which was absolutely lovely. Being able to have this time together before the ceremony was so special and it gave us the chance to

41 

take it all in before the celebrations began.” “The ceremony was shorter than normal and I was worried it was going to feel rushed and impersonal, but it was not like that at all. Lisa from Suffolk Registrars was amazing and made it so special for us and we were just lost in the moment,” remembers Sophie. Following the ceremony there was the usual confetti throwing and a sparkler entrance to dinner which produced some great photos. “When the sun went down, we also had some shots taken out in the rain, which was freezing, but so worth it!” Sophie recalls. After dinner there were plenty of emotional speeches, with hardly a dry eye in the house. Sophie and Chris had their first dance and there was time to relax and chat before winding up at 9pm. “It didn’t feel as manic as many weddings, we had lots of moments where we could just soak it all up and because we’d just come out of lockdown the day before, I think it was more emotional and personal. It was just so heartwarming to have our nearest and dearest together,” adds Sophie. Although their cruise honeymoon had to be put on hold, they stayed at Seckford Hall Hotel in Woodbridge for their wedding night. “It was so lovely,” remembers Sophie. “They even upgraded us to the honeymoon suite which was amazing and when we woke up the next morning it was snowing which felt really magical!”

“We were both so thankful to finally be able to have our special day and grateful to everyone who made it possible. Although it rained and didn’t really stop, we embraced it and got some fantastic photos!” – Sophie

A

fter cancelling their spring wedding due to Coronavirus, Rachel and Dominic downsized their plans and got married anyway. As soon as restrictions began to ease in July they started thinking about scrapping their original plans and having an intimate celebration instead. Rachel explains, “When it was announced that weddings with up to 30 people were allowed, we felt this was our time. It was difficult cutting down our 90-strong guest list but we just hoped everyone would understand.” They set the date for 12th September 2020 as it marked the six-year anniversary of them being together. With just six weeks to get everything sorted, first of all they arranged the ceremony at St Edmund King & Martyr Church in Southwold, Suffolk, then booked their photographer Andy followed by the caterers. “After that everything started to fall into place and we were able to organise the other suppliers we wanted. Our main wish was to not only have the wedding day, but to be able to make a weekend of it with all our closest family and friends,” says Rachel. They booked a couple of holiday homes in Southwold so everyone was able to stay over and when the wedding weekend arrived, they couldn’t have asked for better weather. “It honestly felt like we were abroad,” Rachel adds. Read on for her account of their chilled celebration...

As the wedding was at 4pm, the morning was very relaxed. I went for a swim in the sea with all my bridesmaids and we then had a chilled time getting ready while Dom played golf with his groomsmen.

My dress was from Camilla Brides in Norwich and for my something borrowed I wore my sister’s veil and the earrings she’d worn for her wedding. 46

Originally Dom and the groomsmen were going to hire suits but with everything that was going on they ended up wearing their own instead. They all looked smart in blue with matching burgundy ties and pocket squares.

REAL WEDDINGS

Even though we only had a limited number of people at the service and we weren’t allowed to sing hymns, it didn’t matter to us as we were finally able to get married.

I’d always dreamed of being able to walk to and from the church and it was even better than I’d ever imagined. After the ceremony we went to Southwold beach for some prosecco followed by delicious food by Carway-Roe Events.

We had our closest family and friends with us, who we hadn’t been able to see for a while, which made the day extra special. The best men organised some fireworks too, which was a wonderful surprise. 47 

Rachel’s top tip We managed to organise our wedding in six weeks and it ended up being better than we could ever have hoped for, so try not to stress about anything too much.

Even though the wedding was more spontaneous and much smaller than we’d originally planned, it was the best day ever and if we had the choice again we’d plan it that way from the start.

Looking for inspiration? Local experts give their top tips and trend alerts for the year ahead and look at some of the hottest wedding trends around

❤ Think statement cake and dessert displays with a plethora of choices rather than a single main centrepiece. Mini bakes, biscuits and sweet treats not only create extra interest and texture, but are a great talking point too. Dedicate an area to showcase your display to its best advantage with a fabulous backdrop and decorative details; great for stunning photos! ❤ Create an inviting living-room style area using quirky and unusual pieces; ideal as a chill-out zone for your guests to chat and relax. ❤ Bring the inside out to make a magical outside space. A beautifully decorated airy stretch tent, marquee or tipi is ideal with props and furniture spilling out to make the

most of a glorious al fresco setting. ❤ Luscious greenery (real or faux), opulently draped over tables and furniture is always a good look. ❤ Unique displays with a grab-and-go style drinks area are a novel idea. Try a styled backdrop with ready-made drinks and treats for guests to help themselves. ❤ Go bold with your colours, the bolder the better. Colour is the new white however you choose to incorporate it into your day. ❤ Elaborate table top details help create a personal yet intimate feel. Luxuriously draped linens, unusual crystal glassware, layered china, decorative props and plenty of candles make a wonderfully inviting scene. For more inspiration visit www.endlessstory.co.uk

With the future still uncertain, once weddings start up again no one can be quite sure how the landscape will look. Restrictions in some shape or form may be with us for a while but that doesn’t mean having to cut back on style and substance. Awardwinning Jan Leeder of Belles & Beaus Wedding Styling advises:

www.richardjarmy.co.uk

SMALL BUT PERFECTLY FORMED

❤ There’s plenty of creative ways to create an atmosphere for an intimate wedding even in larger venues. Create clusters of décor, rather than spread everything out around the room leaving a potential void. Have features at the edges of the room and through the middle, incorporating tall trees, plants, grids or frames decorated with foliage. You can then position tables between the clusters so each setting has it’s own intimate dining zone. Using larger tables with fewer guests seated around will not only automatically take up more floor space, but also allow for larger centrepieces.

❤ There are plenty of ways to plan and adapt your big day. You may find that having a smaller guest list means more budget to play with so you can go big on the guest experience and splash out on priority items like amazing food, a free bar, live entertainment or floral displays. 52

www.richardjarmy.co.uk

❤ We know the idea of rocking a face mask on your wedding day isn’t the most exciting, but we really love this floral version to match the wedding bouquet, supplied by Charlotte Staff Flowers (www.facebook.com/charlottestaffflowers).

www.richardjarmy.co.uk

WEDDING STYLING

❤ Opt for tall, oversized centrepieces, which make the ceiling appear lower, break up the space and create the wow factor!

❤ Many barns and stately homes have beams and tall ceilings which adds to the spacious feeling Ideas worth exploring to create an inviting space include lighting canopies, drapes, hanging paper lanterns and foliage displays suspended over the tables.

www.richardjarmy.co.uk

❤ Consider your colour palette as white tends to make a space appear lighter and more airy while rich dark shades can make a large room seem smaller and more intimate.

❤ Consider setting up a few bars, buffet or snack stations around the venue, so no single area gets too busy at once. Maybe have a different style of food or drinks at each one such as individual bowls of snacks, readypacked bags of sweets or candy floss, along with ready-poured cocktails on drinks trolleys. Not only a great way of filling space, but also the perfect opportunity for guests to interact while getting their food and drink. ❤ Lounge areas with vintage seating are a popular trend. Think Persian rugs and plenty of greenery dotted around to create cosy nooks and encourage people to break away from their tables. ❤ Find ways to incorporate al-fresco elements where possible, like an outdoor ceremony, photographs and reception drinks on the lawn and an outside lounge area with fire pits for guests to mingle around in the evening. HANDMADE

Realise your vision with bespoke, handmade dresses

The personal touch Shop handmade in the region

M

ake your big day stand out from the crowd with special details created for you. There’s a wealth of talent in the region offering everything from beautiful bespoke gowns, accessories and jewellery to handmade stationery, favours and more. Here’s just a sprinkling to give a taste of what’s available. On the hunt for your dream dress, can’t find anything to match your personal style? Step up Norfolk-based Tatty’s Original, creators of beautiful bridalwear. Owner and designer Tiffany Crosson-Smith says, “Having a bespoke wedding dress allows you to create exactly what you want.” Read on for her guide to getting it right... If you can’t decide whether going bespoke is for you, ask yourself: ❤ Do I want something unique that no one else will have? ❤ Have I already tried on wedding dresses but still not found the one? ❤ Is it a struggle to find well-fitting clothes in store? ❤ Do I have a specific design in mind? ❤ Is my style alternative to the norm? Score a ‘yes’ to any of these questions and having your wedding dress made may be the perfect solution. “One of the biggest struggles when shopping for your gown can be falling in love with a variety of features from different dresses; the top of one, the sleeves of another and the skirt from a whole different style. Bringing these things together with the help of a designer allows you to create the dress of your dreams,” explains Tiffany.

FAQS What if I don’t know what I want? Tiffany says: Feel free to ask as many questions as you like! We offer Photography, www.neilseniorphotography.co.uk, Venue, www.waxhambarnweddings.com, Flowers, www.partridgeandpeony.co.uk and www.vintagesilk.co.uk; Menswear, www.masonsgreateventco.co.uk; Hair and make-up, www.facebook.com/RebeccaMorelloMUA

a free consultation to provide expert help and advice on styles to suit your body shape, how to combine ideas you already have or what type of dress would suit your wedding theme, in order create a design to fit all your needs. How long does it take? A handmade dress can take anywhere from three to 12 months to create depending on your design. Going bespoke requires extra commitment as you need to attend multiple fittings. However, it allows you to see your dress taking shape and make any changes during the design process. It also gives you the opportunity to get to know your dressmaker and ask their professional opinions. By working closely together you’ll be able to realise your vision and have a one-of-a-kind gown made to fit you perfectly. What are the costs involved? It depends on each individual creation. Help and advice is available during the consultation stage on how the design and fabrics can be altered to suit your needs and budget. Don’t forget a bespoke gown is made to fit so there are no additional alteration costs either!

Your wedding rings are meant to last a lifetime, so it pays to get it right and choosing to have them made provides not only something truly personal but the perfect fit too. Husband and wife team Rick and Maggie Chapman of Woodbridge Jewellery Workshop have been making beautiful rings for nearly 50 years; the last seven from a Grade II listed building in Woodbridge. They make everything by hand using traditional methods and no mass-produced castings. Maggie says, “Having your engagement or wedding ring handmade means its unique to you and can be made to your own design.” Other advantages she adds: ❤ You can choose any precious metal or stones and ensure that the gems are ethically sourced and request Fairtrade or Single Mined Origin (SMO) gold. Alternatively, reuse old gold or diamonds perhaps something you’ve inherited that has sentimental value. ❤ Your wedding band can be shaped around your engagement ring to fit exactly and reduce wear and tear on both. ❤ Hand-worked metal is harder wearing, ensuring that the ring will last. It lasted all day after drinking and eating, and even stayed on when I applied a balm over the top. A must-have for your make-up bag.” – Danielle Harvey

“Straight away, I loved the sturdy packaging and precise applicator. The lightweight formula has fantastic pigmentation and the product has a matte finish. There’s no cracking or bleeding because of the avocado oil, vitamin E, and hyaluronic filling spheres, which I’m very thankful for as there’s nothing I hate more than dry lips! The beautiful shade lasted hours on my lips and I got compliments all day when I wore it!” – Olivia Gibson

TRIED AND TESTED Kevyn Aucoin Unforgettable Lip Definer (£18), with Unforgettable Lipstick (£24), www.spacenk.com

MU LAC Velvet Ink, www.mulaccosmetics.com, £13.34

“The Lip Definer was easy to use, and I loved the way it looked. I put it on first thing, and by the time I went to bed it was still firmly in place, looking fabulous, even though I’d been in the rain most of the day. I had fun playing with the dual-ended pencil and brush creating a look that suited me and paired it with Unforgettable Lipstick in Legendary, but as it’s a natural shade it would work well with most colours.” – Melissa Barker

SHADE: UNDRESSED WITH LEGENDARY

“Historically, matte lipsticks have been my worst enemy – being a notorious lip-biter they show up all my flaws. But it’s safe to say that this product has changed my mindset. The finish, although definitely matte, is somehow silky and smooth. The best thing about this particular shade is that it’s bold enough to look like you’ve made an effort without being OTT – the perfect lazy-girl hack! It also has incredible staying power, but that does mean you need to be careful to apply correctly the first time as it doesn’t budge!” – Beth Morton

SHADE: NICE TO MEET YA

Illamasqua Beyond Lipstick, www.illamasqua.com, £20 “Upon application you could definitely tell this was a luxe cream lipstick as it has a balm consistency and left my lips feeling nourished with a noticeable shimmer. Plus, I didn’t have the typical drying of the lips, which I find some products cause. This lipstick is one to keep on you and reapply throughout the day for longevity.” – Danielle Harvey

EXPERT ADVICE

Bridal hair & make-up If your big-day beauty journey has gone into free fall during lockdown, our local experts are here to help you get back on track

TOP-NOTCH LOCKS

To help manage and prepare your hair pre-wedding Cambridgeshire-based Paige Richards advises: ❤ Don’t get your hair cut the day before your wedding as it can take a few days to settle afterwards and the ends can be quite heavy and blunt for styling, especially for an up do. If you are planning to have a trim, I’d suggest getting it done no later than a week before the big day.

LATEST LOOKS

Norfolk’s Emma Burgess gives us her take on key make-up trends for the year ahead: ❤ The ever-growing ’no make-up’ make-up trend will remain popular with brides looking for luminous, natural, healthy-looking skin. Contouring will also be much more subtle. ❤ The focus is on the eyes in 2021 with smoky colours and subtle definition along the top and bottom lash lines. Instead of dark black or grey; soft nude tones along with brown, beige and rose hues will come to the fore. For brides looking to have a little fun with their make-up, think shades of pastel blue, pink, yellow, and even green for an edgy alternative look. ❤ For the ultimate finishing touch think super glossy lips. What better way to shine than with a luscious gloss-coated pout?

✪ EMMA’S TOP PICK Opal Magic Jewel Lips by Charlotte Tilbury Emma Burgess | Make-up artist www.brunettiartistry.co.uk

❤ If you colour your hair, consider how freshly done you want it to look on the day. For highlighted or bleached locks, if you like some natural roots to show, consider how long after colouring you need to allow for them to grow through. To help you decide whether to highlight your hair before the wedding, pull it up into a ponytail to get an idea of how much of your roots will show with your chosen style. If you’re really unsure your stylist or colourist will aways help and advise you. ❤ For your trial, try to keep your hair as close as possible to how it will be for the big day. If you’re growing it, give your stylist the heads up so they can have some extensions ready in case they’re needed to get the full effect. Also if you’re having your make-up trial and dress fitting the same day too you’ll be able to see the overall look, which will help you decide whether or not to make any tweaks. ❤ You CAN wash your hair the morning of your wedding. I know they say it’s easier to style and holds a curl better if you don’t, which is technically true, but everyone’s hair is different and so are people’s routines. If washing your hair makes you feel relaxed and fresh then go ahead, there are lots of products that can be used to provide texture and hold.

PAIGE’S HERO PRODUCTS ❤ If your hair needs some TLC I recommend Olaplex No.3, a great home treatment with salon-strength to restore and repair your locks, improving the texture and appearance. ❤ The Kérastase Genesis Anti-Fall range is great if you’re trying to grow your hair. It helps nourish and restore weak strands prone to falling out or breaking; excellent post-pregnancy too.

✪ TOP PICK Kenra Blow-Dry Spray to reduce drying time, protect hair from heat damage, detangle, smooth and tame the dreaded frizz for long-lasting, healthy looking results. Paige Richards | Make-up, hair and beauty specialist www.paigerichards.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Local experts on what’s hot for weddings in the year ahead

HOT HEADS

We were getting married last year but have postponed it until this September. What kind of hairstyles and accessories are likely to be on trend? Paige says: The trends I expect to see emerging in 2021 include: ❤ HAIR ACCESSORIES AND JEWELS Fresh flowers have held the spotlight for a long time, but at the moment sparkly hair accessories are making a huge impact, especially stars. I particularly love that single jewels dotted through bridal hairstyles are making more of an appearance, great for an effortlessly romantic effect.

❤ CHIC, LOW,

BOUNCY PONYTAILS

❤ UNDONE ELEGANCE 2020 gave us, what I like to call, ‘undone elegance’ and I think we all secretly welcomed this style with open arms and find it comforting. Lots of brides seem to be heading down this route in order to feel more like themselves on the big day. To get the look, think low-maintenance, up dos with loose, trailing tendrils around the face and a few perfectly imperfect moments. A style that makes you feel your prettiest, most elegant self, all while being comfortable and free from worry – hair you can dance in and wear to breakfast the next morning!

I predict this will be the year of the ponytail, styled with gorgeous hair vines and brooches. Perfectly Hollywood-waved or undone and tousled, they’re really flattering and great for showing off lovely accessories, providing intricate, romantic style with high-end elegance and comfort.

❤ HOLLYWOOD

WAVES AND BEAUTIFUL BOUNCY CURLS Hair down, red-carpet Hollywood styles with accessories have been increasingly popular over the last few wedding seasons and I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of this in 2021, especially clips, such as stars and moons, scattered down one side of the hair.

❤ CLASSIC TWIST AND BRAIDS Twists and braids will always be around and we’ll definitely see them making an appearance in the coming seasons. Twists create volume and texture while braids add romance and detail to any hair style. They can be incorporated into nearly any look especially if you want a more undone finish or to add volume. Plaiting all the hair into a large, cascading mermaid braid, entwined with accessories throughout, will be a popular option for 2021.

SWEET DREAMS

We’re great cake lovers and want a real showstopper for our wedding. What’s set to be popular for the year ahead? Wendy says: Dried flowers and foliage are very on trend at the moment and mixing dried leaves with hand-crafted sugar flowers can make a delicate and eye-catching display for your wedding. With the number of guests allowed still likely to be restricted many couples are choosing smaller, one- or two-tier creations, which can still be strikingly beautiful and elegant. Adding texture is another key element. This can be achieved in many ways including ruffles, textured icing and wafer paper flowers from large blooms to tiny delicate ones directly on the icing. When it comes to colours, there’s a move towards palettes of ochre, mustard and buttery tones in 2021, which will add a calm, relaxed vibe to your wedding. Wendy Chapman | Cake maker | www.wondercakes.co.uk

SAY CHEERS!

We’re keeping everything crossed for our August wedding and want it to be as chilled and relaxed as possible. What would you suggest for the bar to make our celebration stand out from the crowd? Matt says: During lockdown people have been reaching out and getting in touch with loved ones that perhaps they haven’t seen for a while. Although contact has been in a different form, connections have been re-established, friendships reinforced and people are ready to celebrate in a big way! Matt predicts: ❤ Continued love for outside, festival- and boho-style weddings – the perfect fit for a mobile bar. ❤ A definite trend for locally produced craft beer and drinks. With heightened awareness about supporting local businesses and also the environmental impact of shopping locally, this is now very important to many people. Sourcing and supplying drinks, tailored-made to each event, gives couples much more choice about what’s on offer and where it has come from. ❤ Gin is still very much in demand, however there’s a shift towards other spirits and rum has been on an upward trend for some time now. I expect to see its popularity continue to grow as there’s such a variety including white, dark, spiced, and that’s just for starters. ❤ With so much time on our hands last year and lots of summer sunshine, there’s been a surge in interest in cocktail-making so no doubt there will be some intrepid tasters circulating. We’re certainly looking forward to creating plenty of delicious tipples to order using the finest juices and spirits, fresh ingredients and garnishes. hen it comes to the style and theme of your wedding, there are no rules. You choose and experts will be on hand to help bring your vision to life. To show how, local suppliers from around the region got together to create this stunning wedding shoot full of colour and attention to detail. Set at romantic rural bolthole Hill Farm, Little Massingham, the tipi and outside spaces provided the perfect backdrop for a festival retro theme.

f you’re dreaming of a beautiful barn wedding, this dreamy shoot is sure to inspire. Fresh shades of lush green with cool ivory touches complement Suffolk’s Smeetham Hall Barn perfectly, creating a cosy welcoming vibe with a luxurious edge. “All the suppliers were in touch with each other beforehand so the vision could be shared across each element,” explains photographer Ayshea Goldberg. As a result the cake stencilling matched the stationery design, which also mirrored the foliage and colours. The fairylights added warmth throughout and made the wedding gowns sparkle. “The shoot was designed to show couples how one idea can work across all the details that they include on their wedding day and also how a typically fresh and bright colour palette can look wonderful in the cosy cooler months too,” adds Ayshea.

Lorna’s look was delicate and romantic with champagne lids, fluttery lashes and nude tones to complement the effortless boho hairstyling.

The soft textured ‘undone’ bun flowed down the neck with an entwined hair piece to highlight depth and add detail to the natural finished look.

A berry-red lip with bronzed glitter eye created Hollie’s modern yet elegant wintery bridal look.

Relaxed cascading curls provided lots of natural movement and added softness to the face, complemented by a light headband to match the style of the dress and overall look.

HEAD TO THE EAST

Wilderness Reserve has launched its second country estate, Chapel Barn, just in time for the staycation boom whether you want to head away pre- or post-vows. The Chapel Barn (once a 15th-century farmstead) has all the charm of its heritage intact and yet comes with a host of luxury facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, cinema, gym and spa set over 5,000 magnificent acres of carefully maintained Suffolk countryside. Accommodation options range from the one-bed electricity-free Hovel, set by the lake, through to Chapel Barn itself, which comes with 18 en suite bedrooms. All seven properties may be rented individually and each building has been sensitively restored, employing the traditional methods of local artisans. Other highlights include Moat Cottage, painted in fetching Suffolk pink. It’s found atop its own hill, surrounded by water full of wildlife. Its hot tub and rowboat are both wonderful spots to take in 360° views of the Suffolk countryside and there’s space on its lawns for fun group activities. Chapel Barn channels the landscaping principles of Capability Brown: cattle and sheep graze the valley sides around the estate’s expansive lake and woodland, wild flower meadows inject colour in spring, while a traditional Suffolk apple orchard flourishes every autumn.
