I
love this time of year, perfect for taking time out from the wedding planning to relax and enjoy the great outdoors before the hectic festive period and winter weather kicks in. There’s plenty of wedding inspiration to be found all around us. East Anglia is blessed with glorious countryside, coastline, woods and forests, so why not grab your partner, pull on your wellies and head out for a good forage? The falling leaves and rich, berry shades of seasonal fruits are great for your big-day palette. Conkers, acorns, twigs, brambles and other finds can provide a wealth of natural decorative material too. To find out what local experts have to say on making the most of this time of year for your big day, turn to page 80. As well as seasonal inspiration, this issue is packed with all the latest trends and top tips for all things weddingrelated from bridal fashion and fabulous local venues to showstopping cakes created by some of the region’s finest from page 45. With the nation now in the grip of baking fever, here at County Weddings HQ we’re keeping Tuesday nights free for our weekly fix of cake triumphs and catastrophes courtesy of The Great British Bake Off #GBBO. Enjoy!

Picturesque Caldecott Hall, at Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Fritton near Great Yarmouth, is now taking bookings for 2022 weddings. After hosting its first wedding in Autumn 2019, COVID struck putting a stop to any more. However, they’ve been busy behind the scenes making further upgrades to the venue, especially the accommodation which is brand new this year. Providing a unique big-day backdrop, couples can tie the knot in the beautiful ceremony room and celebrate afterwards in the wedding marquee. The Sydney Suite at Caldecott Hall can seat up to 85 people for the ’I dos’ while the marquee can host a further 20 for the day time and evening celebrations. The self-catering accommodation in the newly renovated and refurbished Sanctuary Rooms is perfect for the wedding party or guests to stay over. Set in a picturesque location, next door to an 18-hole golf course, weddings at Caldecott Hall are managed by Norwich-based event planning company Ginger Lily Catering. Any profits from the venue hire will be going towards supporting Redwings’ work rescuing, caring and rehoming horses and donkeys in need. Sam Brown, managing director at Ginger Lily Catering, said, “We’re very excited to be able to offer this unique venue to couples looking to get married from 2022 and beyond.” To find out more visit www.gingerlilycatering.co.uk

The red-brick manor directly overlooks a stretch of the beautiful North Norfolk coastline, providing an idyllic setting for weddings. Combining 19th-century character with bold, contemporary interior designs, there’s a choice of beautiful locations for ceremonies inside and out. You can exchange vows in the secluded Walled Garden surrounded by flowers or in a fairytale woodland setting. Alternatively, the Conservatory provides a light, bright and elegant indoor space with room for up to 80 loved ones. Flooded with natural light and with great views of the garden, it’s almost like marrying outside but without the worry of the unpredictable British weather. What’s more, the venue is dog-friendly, so your four-legged friend can be part of your special day too.

REAL WEDDINGS
S
ummer love turned into forever after for Alex and Charlie. They met when they were both 19 while working as waiting staff during the summer holidays in the restaurant at Norfolk’s Dunston Hall Hotel. “We had lots in common and it felt like our paths should have crossed may times before,” says Alex. It was meant to be and after nine years together Charlie asked her to marry him at the same place where they shared their first kiss. “He popped the question during a weekend visit home. It was on Winterton Bay Beach in Norfolk where we first went camping with our work friends and had our first kiss,” remembers Alex. “It was a complete surprise, although not to my parents. He’d asked them seven months prior to the proposal and they almost thought he had changed his mind because he took so long!” They set the date for 10th July this year and opted for a relaxed country theme with a subtle colour scheme of soft mauve, sage and pastel shades.
THE TIME AND THE PLACE It was always going to be Norfolk when it came to choosing where to wed and from the moment they first saw Hales Hale with its magnificent barn and glorious gardens, they knew they’d found their perfect venue. Surrounded by picturesque countryside and wild meadows, it ticked all the boxes for their dream wedding. Alex explains, “We could picture our long-haired sausage dog running around the grounds, the barn is stunning even without decorations and we were able to hire the venue from Friday to Monday to prolong the celebrations. There’s luxury accommodation available on site too and you can put your own stamp on things as there’s no restrictions on suppliers and caterers.”
LOOKING THE PART Alex looked stunning on the day in a shimmery Rowland by Sottero and Midgley A-line wedding gown. “It was a total wildcard picked for me by Pure Brides,” she reveals. “Helen Martin made my bespoke veil which was incredible and had Swarovski crystals dotted all over it to catch the light.” Charlie and the groomsmen wore light coloured suits to fit with the cool, relaxed feel of the day. Not forgetting the important four-legged wedding guests who sported smart green, rubber-duck print bow ties. The bridesmaids complemented the colour scheme in long dresses in two different styles and a range of burgundy and mauve tones.
THE ‘I DOS’ The ceremony was particularly moving for them both. “We were on cloud nine,” recalls Alex. “After almost 10 years together and a year-and-a-half of COVID and lockdowns, to be surrounded by our friends and family celebrating such a happy event was an incredible high. We had been so busy organising everything that when it came down to standing in front of each other and exchanging our vows it was really emotional.” As an extra sentimental touch Alex had her

REAL WEDDINGS grandmother’s ring reset especially for her. Even her beloved pet got a bit overwhelmed. “My sausage dog whined during the service because he wanted to be at the front with his pawrents!” she laughs. Afterwards he hitched a ride outside on the back of the train on her wedding dress, much to everyone’s amusement. The Great British weather was as unpredictable as ever which meant everyone was outside with umbrellas for the drinks reception. “It didn’t ruin the celebration though,” adds Alex. They dodged the showers and made the most of the magnificent grounds for standout justwed shots and garden games.
ALL IN THE DETAIL The flowers were a major focal point of the day with an abundance of beautiful country-style blooms. “They were really important to us and we went full out,” says Alex. “We hired trees and had two large urns filled with flowers and boxes with trailing greenery. For the reception we had jam jars filled with pastel-coloured wildflowers down the middle of the long tables. They were arranged ombre-style in shades of blue, mauve, pink and peach with a mauve silk runner ruffled up around them.”
“Niche Flowers was absolutely outstanding. I’ve never seen such beautiful flowers and they also came up with loads of ideas to really make the venue pop!” – Alex Due to COVID and all the last-minute changes to the guest list, they made their own table plan. “We bought a huge chalkboard, some chalk pens and voila!” adds Alex. “We love the personal touches so the table names were handmade as well and we asked a sibling to put their calligraphy skills to good use.” The favours were personalised pick ‘n’ mix bags of sweets and as neither of them are great cake lovers, they opted for delicious desserts instead. Other decorative details included a homemade welcome sign, light-up initials and a postcard guestbook. “We collected postcards from our travels together and our guests picked one with some significance to them and wrote their well wishes on the back,” explains Alec. The catering was another highlight of the day. “The food was incredible,” raves Alex. The menu featured canapés representing different parts of their lives including sticky sausages and mini roast beef Yorkshires, Middle Eastern dishes for the main course followed by white chocolate cheesecake and brownies.
TIME TO CELEBRATE The fun began from the get-go with family, bridesmaids and groomsmen joining them at the venue for the whole weekend. After setting up on the Friday and checking into their rooms, they had time to relax, unwind and enjoy a pizza-fest. “Luca Pizza was just incredible they accommodated all our requirements and it was wonderful sitting around with the pizzas flowing,” recalls Alex. “My bridesmaids also got me a night-before-the-wedding box with facemasks, sleeping spray for my pillow, lip balm and garters of course!”
29
On the day, due to COVID restrictions, the bridesmaids organised a quiz at the tables to keep everyone amused and they had a slideshow of funny photos and video messages from loved ones who couldn’t travel from abroad to be there. They also had a live act that performed an acoustic set and full band session. The following day they held a second mini-celebration and set everything up outside using the leftover flowers and decorations. They also had ice cream from Dann’s Farm in Dereham with various flavours and lollies for their guests to enjoy and tucked into fish and chips before watching the Euro cup football final.
HONEYMOON With their official honeymoon still to come, they went on a buddymoon with the best man and his fiancé immediately after the wedding and spent a few days in Norfolk relaxing and catching up. “We stayed at Cley Windmill which was really special!” adds Alex.

REAL WEDDINGS
Ashleigh and John’s fairytale wedding was a magical Disney-themed celebration Images courtesy of Tim Stephenson Photography
A
shleigh and John were both in their first year at Nottingham Trent University when their paths crossed on a night out in the city. They were both attracted to each other and had their first kiss that evening. “Four months later he asked me on a date and after the Easter holidays we went back to Rock City, the venue where we met, and it all started from there,” explains Ashleigh. Romance blossomed and in April 2019, John popped the question in front of the Cinderella castle in Disney World, Florida. “I had absolutely no idea he was going to do it! The parks were busy, as we went during the spring break, and while his parents and sister
went for a wander he said we should have our photo taken in front of the castle,” recalls Ashleigh. As they were waiting in line, she noticed John was a bit fidgety but didn’t think anything of it until it was finally their turn and, much to her surprise, he got down on one knee. “I thought he was joking at first and was just going to tie his shoelaces! The photographer caught it all on camera and John proposed to me with a Disney-style ring that he’d got that morning. He’d also called my dad to ask his permission which was very important to me,” adds Ashleigh. Read on for her account of their big day at Norfolk’s Oxnead Hall on 24th July this year… 33

Rustic romance
REAL WEDDINGS
Chloe and James’ big day had a chilled rustic vibe Images courtesy of Tatum Reid
A
chance meeting at a local festival lit the spark of romance for Chloe and James. “Having spent the day with our friends we all met up in the evening and James and I didn’t stop talking the whole time,” recalls Chloe. They got together and when the time came to pop the question, James chose the South Bank, her favourite part of London, right in front of the London Eye. “It was definitely a surprise,” Chloe recalls. She said ‘yes’ of course and they tied the knot at Hunters Hall in Dereham, Norfolk on 27th March this year. They opted for a rustic theme with a sage green and pink colour scheme. Read on for Chloe’s account of their big day… 39
The Victorian barn stood out for us the most. It was big and spacious with a real rustic feel. The garden also really impressed us and we just knew it was the one from the moment we saw it.
I felt really laid-back and chilled most of the morning and it wasn’t until it was time to walk down the aisle that the nerves really kicked in.
I originally pictured myself in a boho dress but the style just didn’t do anything for me. However, as soon as I tried on my figurehugging Thyone gown by Pronovias, I fell in love with it instantly. Ben and his groomsmen all wore black tuxedos and Ben had a pocket watch as well as an extra special touch.
40
After walking down the aisle, I changed my satin ivory heels for comfy hand-painted, white Dr Marten sandals and I had a handpainted leather jacket to match.

“Our DJ did a karaoke session which was a huge hit with our guests. We were all cheering each other on and it created such a great atmosphere.”
Seeing all our guests really enjoying their day with us was surreal; everything was just perfect.
“After the wedding we went on a minimoon and stayed in one of the luxury Meadow Lodges in Woodbridge, Suffolk. We also went to Cornwall for seven days in June and it was truly beautiful. Due to COVID, we didn’t have much choice other than to have a staycation honeymoon but we are so glad we did as we had the best time.” CHLOE’S TOP TIP: Make a wedding folder in your emails so you don’t lose or miss anything from your suppliers.

one are the bad old days of being confined to a dark corner of the room; the wedding cake has emerged from the shadows and transformed from the Cinderella of the show to become one of the leading lights. Not just for the cutting ceremony, nowadays the cake is a star in its own right. We spoke to some of the region’s cake makers to get their take on what’s cooking for the year ahead and to share some of their favourite creations.

PERFECT PETALS Fiona Murphy of Suffolk-based Moo Moo Cakes (www.moomoocakes.co.uk) not only made this beauty, she delivered and assembled it at Abbey Hall in Eye and painstakingly dressed it with beautiful organic edible petals from Maddocks Farm Organics (www.maddocksfarmorganics.co.uk). The tiers included carrot and pecan with cinnamon buttercream, organic vanilla cake sandwiched with Tiptree strawberry jam and creamy vanilla layer, and a top tier of moreish spiced apple cake with homemade salted caramel and ginger filling, all smothered in a blanket of vanilla buttercream.
Trend alert Fiona’s top pick for 2022 – edible petal cakes, of course!
ELEGANT TIERS “This cake stands out in my memory for the innovative and daring tier set up. It was the result of a wonderful collaboration with the florist and wedding stylist, bringing together an air of effortless elegance for a winter wedding at Chippenham Park.” — Ana Cerdeño-Tárraga, www.honeyshedbakery.co.uk 45
SIMPLY STYLISH
Trend alert
Displayed in prime position at the base of the sweeping staircase at Gosfield Hall, Essex, this stunning wedding cake was designed to look amazing from all angles, including from above. Created by Ginny of award-winning The Little Sugar Rose (www.thelittlesugarrose.com), it included sugar flowers and hand-painted gold edged ruffles. Ginny explains, “The bride was a big Disney fan so I added a discreet hand-piped Mickey Mouse silhouette peeking out from the bottom folds as it’s the personal touches that make a wedding cake even more memorable.”
Ginny predicts increased demand for tall wedding cakes with multiple tiers and wow-factor designs. She says, “As couples celebrate, surrounded by family and friends who may not have seen each other for quite some time, many are going all out to make sure their wedding day and cake are extra special.”

“I love this cake as it’s deceptive in its beauty. It’s iced with buttercream, not the usual fondant and has square edges and marbling, not usually captured with such a fluid medium. The couple were wowed, as were the guests.” — Emma Thorburn, www.bunsoffun.co.uk
LOVES AND LIVES
Trend alert
I love the trend for cakes with the illusion of a floating middle tier. We’re also seeing clear cylinders being incorporated, which can be filled with flowers to add the wow factor.
For something truly personal and different, Terri Newman of EriVica Cakes (www.erivicacakes.com) designed this fun cake to reflect the groom’s love of kayaking. “The couple wanted this to take pride of place on their cake along with their dog lying at the bride’s feet,” recalls Terri.

Becky’s seen increased demand for more personalised cakes. “Many of my customers are wanting that extra little detail that’s special only to them,”
THE PERSONAL TOUCH Becky Coverdale of Cambridgeshire-based Becky’s Cake Bakes (www.beckyscakebakes.co.uk) struggled to select a single favourite, so her top pick is the one that received the best response from the happy couple. “It’s definitely not your usual style of wedding cake, which is why I had so much fun making it. I love the colours I used to create the space effect and the couple were also really pleased with the topper I made for them,” adds Becky. 46

“I think square cakes with contrasting textures will be the next big thing. Boho seems to be growing in favour too – it’s all about the natural touch.” ¬ Terri

BIG AND BEAUTIFUL “I’ve chosen this cake because it’s quite different, I love the colours and I think burgundy is going to be a popular colour next year,” says Heather Keen of Keen For Cakes (www.keenforcakes.co.uk).
“My prediction is for more nature-inspired creations and less fondant as couples reduce their sugar intake along with more sustainable options such as vegan cakes with organic, pesticide-free flowers and foliage to reduce waste and harm to the environment.” — Trudy (www.theicedvegan.co.uk)

NATURAL WONDER This four-tiered showstopper took pride of place at a wedding fair to showcase one of vegan artisan baker Trudy Stagg’s most popular designs. She says, “It’s a real favourite of mine. I love the simplicity of it and how natural it looks.”
Cakes looks likely to be bigger and more beautiful than ever, according to Heather. She says, “After mini and micro weddings and all of the restrictions we’ve had, I think couples will be going large! With the chance for much-awaited parties to go ahead, larger gatherings with family and friends will be popular and provide the opportunity to go big with all the whistles and bells!”
FLOWER POWER “This was a recent cake which I absolutely loved. The colours in the handmade sugar flowers went together beautifully with the Wedgwood blue tiers and the hundreds of sugar pearls in the drapes on each tier were individually added by hand to give a unique effect. The happy couple loved it too!” — Caz Dennis (www.cazscakesandsugarcraft.com)

OFF THE WALL “We have picked our Banksy-inspired design as we haven’t seen anything quite like it before and while its contemporary, it also has a classical hint about it.” — Giles (www.sassascakes.com)
Caz predicts that styles will continue to be very varied but with growing demand for botanical and floral themes.
Trend alert
Giles reports continued interest in semi-naked cakes and their half wood-effect, rustic designs. “There also seems to be a call for tall classic-looking cakes, iced in white with deep tiers, natural-style handmade sugar flowers with a touch of metallic finishing,” he adds.

AWAY DAY
Let off steam with an activity-filled hen do at Ufford Park Woodbridge. Take a fitness class, walk the trim trail, go for a swim or play a round of golf on the 18-hole course. You can practise your swing on the two-tier driving range beforehand or for some light-hearted fun, try the Congo Rapids Adventure Golf. If it’s R&R you’re after, there’s plenty of opportunity for that too. Book a spa day with a difference and enjoy a mud treatment in the Chamber of Secrets, or a Raindrop Massage. Dine in The Park Restaurant or why not bring your own games and hire out a room for your own private celebration. Visit www.uffordpark.co.uk

Nature’s CANVAS PHOTO SHOOT
Bathe your day in soft golden hues for a warm mellow vibe Images courtesy of Georgina Mai Photography
N
orfolk tipi wedding venue Wellington Wood provided the perfect backdrop for this stunning shoot. Inspired by nature and tinged with a golden glow, simple, rustic styling complemented the theme. Coordinator and photographer Georgina Mai explains, “The tipi is in a beautiful wild meadow field and the concept was to mix the two contrasts of the natural outdoors along with a touch of warm, classic elegance using gold and cream as the main colours, mixed with natural greenery.”
53
The second florist dressed the aisle with greenery from the surrounding field and the doors from the ceremony room opened out to the beautiful wild meadow.
Surrounded by fairylights, the table was dressed with gold candlesticks, cutlery, silk napkins and green foliage in the middle to bring the two contrasts together.
The table favours included gold detail on the boxes.
54
PHOTO SHOOT
The wedding invitations, menu cards and table plan were designed in a classic font with a gold foil finish which reflected the fairylights beautifully.
The loosely tied bouquets included eucalyptus stems and large cream and peach roses, which were also used for the groom’s buttonhole and on the cake.
The bride and bridesmaid dresses featured tulle skirts for a floaty, relaxed look and fine delicate lace around the top as the finishing touch.
The bridal make-up and hair was kept natural with a touch of gold eyeshadow and soft curls set off by a delicate handmade pearl necklace, bracelet, earrings and headband to match.

Toner, often the forgotten skincare routine step, is actually hugely beneficial. It can help with breakouts, remove the last traces of make-up, eliminate excess oil, help balance the skin’s pH levels, soothe and refresh. So, check out the new Q+A Green Tea Daily Toner (£8). Ideal for everyone, especially those with stressed-out skin, it’s packed full of antioxidants that protect from environmental damage. One in particular, EGCG, can even rejuvenate dying skin cells to restore and repair skin. Green Tea itself is rich in vitamin E, a moisturising ingredient known to minimise signs of ageing, amongst myriad other benefits. Check out www.qandaskin.com

THAT’S A WRAP
The Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is the latest innovation from cult hair health brand AQUIS. Made from a naturally antimicrobial performance fabric it allows the hair to dry without force or heat and eliminates the frizz, damage and breakage caused by harsh terry towels. Hair is at its weakest when wet so protecting it from such harsh treatment means it’ll be smoother and stronger. What’s more, since it’s woven with copper, which boasts antimicrobial and antibacterial properties proven to repel bacteria the wrap stays fresher longer, and is great for travel. I absolutely love mine – it’s taken the stress out of washing my hair in more ways than one. Check out www.aquishair.co.uk where the AQUIS Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is priced at £30. 70

SILKY SMOOTH
Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. This Is Silk Cleansing Cloths in Noir are £21.99 for three at https://thisissilk.com
PERFECT PREP
Award-winning and cruelty-free make-up brand Milani Cosmetics has introduced the Rose Prep + Prime range to Boots and Beauty Bay. It’s all about nourishing and replenishing your skin for a radiant complexion and dewy glow. I’m a fan of the lip treatment products in particular, which were game-changers for me! The Rose Sugar Lip Scrub (£13.75) comes first in the pamper session, polishing dry and chapped areas for an ultra-soft and smooth pout. Follow with The Rose Butter Lip Mask (£13.75), which contains hyaluronic acid to plump and replenish moisture. Your lipstick will look perfect on the day and your bridal make-up artist will love you for doing all the prep for them! These little heroes are available at www.milanimakeup.co.uk

Be beautiful
BE YOU
Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty
Tim McBaj
It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.
B
orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 72
liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!
Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant
and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.
“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and
sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

Huda Beauty Glow Obsessions Highlighter Palette £27, www.boots.com “For all those glamorous brides-to-be, this is the perfect product to define your features and achieve that gorgeous glow. The pocket-sized palettes come with four different shades to match any make-up style and I loved mixing them to create a bespoke hue. To achieve a luminous complexion, I applied to the high points of my face including my cheekbones, brow bone, cupids bow and bridge of my nose, and this buttery, powdered formula blended in beautifully. A big bonus for me was that you can add a small amount for a natural look or build up for a glam finish that looks great in photos.” — Olivia Gibson
GLOW UP!
Looking to achieve that oh-so stunning bridal glow for your wedding day? These products can help and team CWM have put them to the test Kevyn Aucoin Glass Glow Liquid Illuminator £26, www.spacenk.com “On turning to YouTube for help on how to use this product I found a tutorial video by Kevyn Aucoin’s fab director of artistry and education, Nick Lujan, and less than 10 minutes later, I was good to go! I put two of Nick’s suggested uses to the test and was impressed by both. Day one: layering Glass Glow on the cheekbones before foundation application, I received compliments on my luminous complexion! Day two: I mixed Glass Glow with my foundation and was wowed by the fresh even, natural-looking glow I achieved. Top tip? Don’t be deterred by the sparkle, the result is flawless.” — Kelly Andrews
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacianmide Dew Drops £31, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “As a bride-to-be, I know how important it is to look fabulous on your big day, so I was excited to try these drops designed to give you a fresh, dewy look. The product smells amazing, and a little pump goes a long way, so although it’s not the cheapest, it’ll take you a long time to go through it all. I used the drops every morning for a few days and noticed a difference right away. My skin felt softer and looked hydrated. I’m planning to use it on the morning of my wedding and would definitely recommend it.” — Melissa Barker 74
Sculpted by Aimee Second Skin Dewy Finish Foundation £24, www.sculptedbyaimee.com “Ideal for normal to dry skin this moisturising foundation has a gorgeously smooth texture that’s super-easy to blend resulting in an even finish. One pump is all that’s needed for a light application or for days when more coverage is in order a couple of pumps should do the trick. I loved the healthy glow and breathable feel it left me with. I was also thrilled to learn of its anti-ageing properties: music to my ears having hit 40 during lockdown!” — Kelly Andrews
Institut Esthederm Cellular Water Mist £18, www.naos-store.co.uk “I’ve never used a mist before but I’m very much a convert after this product. It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” — Danielle Harvey
Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Skin Tint £32, www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This little beauty is a must in anyone’s make-up kit; the lightweight product blends like a dream. The sheer coverage formula was the perfect balance to even out my skin tone while leaving a natural-looking finish. I used the shade fair, applied it with a beauty blender and found that all my other beauty products layered beautifully over it. I was left with a glowy base and brightened complexion. I’d recommend this product for the summer and warmer weather!” — Olivia Gibson

EXPERT ADVICE
Q&A
CROWNING GLORY We’re having an autumn wedding and I’d like my hair to complement the season. What would you suggest? Sharron says: I’ve found wedding hair this year has been either very soft and natural or big and glamorous. Styles with a lot of texture remain popular too. The autumn brides I’ve done trials for so far certainly seem to be following these key trends. Autumn brings some lovely gold, yellow, red and copper tones which are great to work with. Wedding hair can look amazing with flowers or accessories in these shades to finish off a seasonal look. You could even have some warm autumnal highlights or a hair colour to complement the time of year. To keep your locks in good condition and avoid the dreaded frizz if the weather’s damp on the big day, make sure to have regular trims beforehand to get rid of dry ends. Prep your hair well in the run-up to the wedding. Use shampoo and conditioners that fight frizz and block humidity; oil-based hair serum on the ends can also help tame damaged and frizzy hair.

FORWARD THINKING We’re having an autumn-themed wedding because it’s our favourite time of year. We’re stressing about the planning and photos though, taking into account things like the weather and shorter daylight hours. Zoe says: The biggest thing to factor in is the timings and don’t worry, you can still have amazing weather in the autumn with some truly fantastic colours too. If you’re hoping for plenty of outdoor photos though, you need to make sure the ceremony takes place at a time that will allow you to make the most of the natural light. You can celebrate the season with your venue styling by combining autumn hues and natural materials in the décor. Displaying centrepieces on reclaimed wood is a great way to showcase your wedding flowers and using natural fabrics to decorate your invitations and stationery will also help set the tone and create a rustic, autumnal feel from the get-go.

SEASONAL FLAVOUR We want our wedding cake to reflect our autumn wedding theme – any ideas? Trudy says: There are a number of ways you can do this with the look, taste and staging of your cake. Things like adding some seasonal flavours, such as apple spice, and using autumnal colours especially rich tones like burgundy and burnt orange. Incorporating natural elements into the design is also a good idea, like fallen leaves. These can be edible, pressed foliage or decorative sugar work; dried fruits and fresh seasonal berries work well too. To make a focal point of your cake go for a moody look and create a seasonal ambience. Trudy | Cake maker www.theicedvegan.co.uk
EXPERT ADVICE

♥ Create an opulent lounge area with carved wooden chairs, French sofas and chaise longues in velvet shades of burnt orange, burgundy or mustard with gold-toned scatter cushions. ♥ Drape luxurious fabrics across tables in shades of burgundy, teal, moss green or burnt orange with candelabra and dark coloured candles. ♥ Atmosphere is everything and can easily be enhanced with pillar candles and tea lights. ♥ If pumpkins are your vision, but the standard orange ones aren’t to your liking, spray paint them to make them work with your colour scheme. Kerry Langham | Venue stylist | www.endlessstory.co.uk
www.neilseniorphotography.co.uk
SETTING THE SCENE What kind of decorative details would you suggest to give our wedding a sophisticated, autumnal feel? Kerry says: For an elegant and natural approach, we love greenery and foliage. Bring the outside in and keep it simple, style spaces with an abundance of twigs, branches, moss, ivy and leaves, not forgetting oodles of fairy lights. Here are some other ideas to add an extra special touch: ♥ Forget the wall of prosecco, how about a wall of spicy signature autumn cocktails instead? A great way to welcome your guests and beat the chills, especially if your celebration is outside. ♥ Have a statement piece of furniture sprayed in mixed metallic tones or a splash of copper and gold, styled and stacked with autumnal treats like toffee apples, cinnamon buns and pumpkin spiced cupcakes.
FLOWER POWER THE WRITE STUFF We want our wedding stationery to give our guests a sneak peek of our October wedding. What would you suggest? Sarah says: This time of year provides plenty of scope to incorporate the season in your wedding stationery to give a flavour of your day. Using autumnal colours, natural elements and designs to reflect the season is a great way to get your guests excited for what’s to come. Foliage is ideal for this and our autumn design features a leaf cut-out on texture laid card to give a high-end finish and the leaf can be adapted to any colour. Warm, burnished tones of orange red and brown are particularly popular for that special seasonal feel. Sarah Gibbs | Graphic designer | www.topsdesigns.co.uk
I’m looking for ideas on how to incorporate the colours, textures and essence of autumn in my wedding flowers, can you help? Alison says: Nature provides a wonderful palette to choose from, think copper, soft caramel, and rich brown, gold and red tones. Sunflowers and dahlias remain popular and come in an array of seasonal colours for a bold look. Foliage, berries, rosehips, vines, seed heads, conkers, fir cones and pheasant feathers also add an autumnal touch to a design. Mix vintage with contemporary styles and be brave in your use of colours to make a statement. Alison Mortlock | Floral designer www.albertroseflowers.co.uk

The rooms, several of which have terraces, have surprising decorations, all inspired by the refined, well-travelled and cultured aesthetics of the 1940s Check out https://room-matehotels.com/gb/ 85

Love is in the air
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
I
can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.
FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, so I needed a supplier who would

be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! We visited our local boutique, and since I had no idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel like me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line silhouette. The second gown I tried on was one I’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging neckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds like everything I didn’t want in a dress, but strangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards (mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them
and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.
I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.
Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.
Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.
How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.
Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.
The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.
To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.
To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 89
