BEST DAY

Joshua and Elizabeth’s wedding featured hues of lilac and grey Images courtesy of Captcha Photography LTD

REAL WEDDING

J

oshua and Elizabeth first met on a Christian dating app where they hit it off almost immediately. Elizabeth says, “I knew Josh was the one when all ideas of what the perfect relationship should look like didn’t matter anymore – I’m so happy by his side and wouldn’t change anything about him.” For Josh, he knew she was perfect early on in the relationship as they shared a similar sense-of-humour and interests. In April 2020, Josh plucked up the courage to propose on the canal bank near his home. Elizabeth says, “I moved in with Josh’s family during the lockdown and we were debating who loved the other the most when he asked; it wasn’t the proposal he’d planned due to the pandemic, but it was just right for us.” The couple set the wedding date for 15th April 2021, with the aim to create the perfect day to celebrate their love. The bride-to-be says, “We wanted the wedding to be all about us; hence why we walked out to The Avengers theme song – a film series we both love.”

SETTING THE SCENE As the pair are both Christians, getting married in a church was an easy option. Traditionally, it would be the bride’s parents’ church that holds the ceremony, but the couple decided it was more important to be married somewhere that was home to them both. The couple chose Yew Lodge Hotel for their reception and the team worked hard to ensure the day was special. Around 120 Lego mini-figures were purchased for wedding favours before COVID-19 restrictions changed. These will now be given to guests next year as the couple are throwing a party to celebrate with all their loved ones. Carrying on the Lego theme, the delicious cake had a Lego cake topper which looked great. The bride’s flowers on the day matched her grandmother’s wedding bouquet from when she got married. Elizabeth says, “It’s a family trend to have a specific colour rose on the wedding day, which is why we had cream roses in my bouquet. Other florals included lilac roses, lilac freesias and eucalyptus.” The bride’s mother made the centrepieces using succulents and purple violas with pipettes sticking out as a personal touch because Elizabeth is a microbiology PhD student and the groom is a scientific manufacturer.

27

“Our top tips for other couples would be not to rush the day. It feels so important to get to the next venue and talk to all your guest, but take time to enjoy the experience.” – Elizabeth LOOKING THE PART Elizabeth always knew she didn’t want a huge dress and fell in love with a fish-tail-shaped design. She says, “I opted for an Anna Sorrano gown called Francesca and surprisingly liked the slight sparkle and glass buttons, even though I originally wanted covered buttons.” A beautiful drop necklace and earrings finished off her look and matched the colour scheme perfectly. The groom looked dashing in a grey three-piece suit, ivorycoloured waistcoat and purple tie. The groomsmen wore the same except for grey waistcoats, which allowed the groom to stand out. Each bridesmaid looked beautiful in grey halterneck dresses with pleated skirts.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS The day was full of so many beautiful moments and the pair managed to create the perfect wedding day despite the worldwide pandemic. Due to Government restrictions, only 15 guests could attend the day, but the couple decided to stream the ceremony over Zoom for those who couldn’t attend. Elizabeth comments, “It was amazing to see more than 80 screens join us virtually, it was amazing to have more people involved in the day and some friends had recorded themselves doing the readings and one of our songs.”

HONEYMOON After a day full of celebrations and memories, the couples set off to South Wales for a week to reflect on their special day and enjoy their first moments as newlyweds.

et in the Northamptonshire countryside, the stunning Fawsley Hall Hotel was the perfect venue for this timeless and classic shoot. The team used a traditional vibe throughout the day, from the room set-up and styling to the couple’s gorgeous outfits – not forgetting the classic car. The venue’s exclusive Knightly Court provided private rooms for the ceremony and the stunning wedding breakfast, which featured beautiful silk white and ivory roses as well as hydrangeas with hints of gold and blush. The impressive top table was finished with taper candles to create a romantic atmosphere without detracting from the breathtaking chandeliers. The groom’s tux was a contemporary take on classic staple and perfectly accompanied his bride’s delicate dress from Anna Wood Bridal. Natural make-up and a classic up-do completed her timeless look perfectly.

THE PERFECT DAY

Planning our wedding during COVID-19 is really stressful, what advice can you share to help us? It is a stressful time, so make sure to take a step back and find a wedding planner that has the knowledge and expertise to help. You may have planned some elements, including a photographer or a venue, which is not a problem for a planner because they can work around this – everyone likes to have a specific item or supplier at their wedding. I help lots of couples with specific requirements and ensure all the little touches matter just as much as the big details. Many people believe wedding planners are expensive, but we save the couple money and time by communicating with all suppliers involved to make every detail perfect. Amanda Bradford | Amanda Wedding and Events Planning www.amandaweddingandeventsplanning.com

BRIDAL BEAUTY

❤ Do I need to skin prep? Carry on your skincare routine as usual if you have one, but make sure to start one if you do not. I recommend starting at least six months prior; this gives your skin time to adjust and be bridal ready. But as for the wedding day, I ask for everyone to be make-up free and prepared for me to cleanse and moisturise the skin for you. Jessica Willerton | Jessica’s Makeup www.instagram.com/__jessicas_makeup__

https://natalielaurenphotography.co.uk

I’m looking for a make-up artist for my wedding day, what questions are important to ask the supplier before I book? Here are some questions that I’m normally asked to give you an idea: ❤ Do I provide a make-up trial? It’s good to have a make-up trial as I get to know the bride, learn their style, individuality and discuss everything so the bride can feel more comfortable around me. ❤ Will the make-up last? The make-up will last throughout all of the ceremony and throughout the evening. If the bride has oily skin, they can top it up with a bit of powder. Make sure to test this out during the trial. ❤ What brands do you use? It’s essential to check what brands the make-up artist uses. I use a mixture of my go-to Charlotte Tilbury, MAC, Bobbi Brown, Zoeva, Estée Lauder, Clinique, Chanel, Dior – I will use any product if I like it regardless of the price tag. ❤ How long does the make-up application take per person? I give roughly 40 to 50 minutes per bridesmaid for a classic natural makeup look. Your make-up will take approximately one hour; we usually have early starts from 5am depending on how many bridesmaids you have.

couples are looking for exclusive venues that are intimate and private, where the focus is on the wedding party’s requirements rather than set packages. After a difficult 18 months of uncertainty, a couple’s greatest desire is to see their dream become a reality. Venues that provide in-house catering and a complimentary menu tasting on the premises give each couple a feel and taste of the hospitality they shall expect at their wedding. After visiting a venue, each couple needs to feel like they can imagine their wedding there and know their celebration is in the safest of hands. We’re so excited to start looking for a wedding venue, what advice can you share with us to make the process easier? At Cleatham Hall, our advice for couples is to find a venue that you love and everything else will fall into place. Most nearlyweds will have decided what kind of wedding is ideal for them before making a shortlist of places to visit. Finding out the ethos of each venue will give a strong indication if it matches your requirements. Visit the location during different seasons and ask if there are indoor and outdoor spaces for ceremonies. According to future trend predictions from the wedding industry, many

Why is it important to book a hairstylist for my wedding? When it comes to booking suppliers, a hairstylist should be high up on your list of priorities as you won’t want the added stress of your hair not sitting right, curls dropping or any other worries in the morning. You want to feel chilled, relaxed and focus on the little things like if it’s too early for a prosecco – the answer is always no! The pictures of your wedding day will be on display for years to come and you’ll want to look your absolute best. Entrust this job to a professional as we can give you tips on what will suit you and the overall look, and have the tools and knowledge to execute it flawlessly. We have also been to hundreds of weddings and can use that experience to help things run smoothly, give you insider information on how the morning works and make sure you’re ready on time. It’s also great to have an extra pair of hands for when that zip needs doing up, shoes need tying or bouquet needs blotting before you get married! DREAM DAY

What advice can you share when it comes to planning our wedding budget? When setting a budget, pick an amount you’re comfortable with and use your wedding date to calculate how long you have to save per month – also add savings or contributions. Make sure to talk about what’s important to you both. Is it the location and venue, wine, shoes, band or cake? Think about what would make the day truly yours and what you’re prepared to put chunks of your budget aside for. Make these a priority in your research to get a good understanding of how much it will cost. Keep a spreadsheet or tracker to keep on top of the budget and know what’s left to spend. Allocate some time each week to go through all the different aspects together and decide what’s next to organise – it will create even more quality time together. THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

https://mattgloverphotography.co.uk

I’m having young children at my wedding and I want to keep them entertained throughout the day. How can I achieve this? Guests attending a wedding with children always fear the worse and worry about keeping them entertained. Take away that fear and ensure the children have as much, if not more, fun than the parents themselves. We’re qualified event nannies who entertain and supervise kids for as little or as long as needed. The team provide a mobile creche set-up suitable for all ages including babies to 12-years-old. We’re also more than happy to change nappies, give bottles and follow any routine you have. Our nannies come to the venue with a whole host of activities ranging from soft play, pop-up tents, sensory/musical toys, books, board games, non-messy craft, ride-ons and a movie for the evening. Some parents choose to bring the children’s pyjamas into the creche, which allows them to be lifted straight to bed after a fun-packed day. ituated in Lincoln, Hackthorn Hall provided the perfect setting for this elegant shoot which featured a soft, romantic colour palette with blush, apricot, cream, white and gold hues. The day demonstrates to couples how luxurious weddings could be created for 15 guests to fit COVID-19 restrictions. Shoot coordinator Ruby Adds at Love Birds, Wedding & Events carefully selected local suppliers to take part based on their highstandard of work, creativity and passion – all important aspects when picking a dream team. Ruby says, “Once I had my chosen suppliers onboard, I set out to find the perfect venue for the shoot and discovered the stunning Hackthorn Hall. I instantly knew it was the perfect location, even though it meant risking the British weather in October for an outdoor shoot – I knew it would be worth it!” 45

H

ere at Your East Midlands Wedding, we’re in love with this Indian and Moroccaninfluenced shoot at Overgrown Acres. Shoot coordinator Nisha Mistry at Niche Weddings & Events was inspired by the earthy spiced tones of India and Morocco while traveling, and wanted to fuse this with more contemporary touches for the shoot. Nisha says, “Within the Hindu religion, nature’s forces are an integral part of the ceremony. We adapted this by using earthy tones with ochre, sepia brown and terracotta orange to represent the Rajasthani landscape. Turmeric tones were used to represent diversity, while pink hues demonstrated the culture’s mythical elements. “The choice of the teepee was not a conventional route for an Indian wedding, but we decided on this element to represent the teepees dancing along the dunes in the Rajasthani region of India.”

VENUE STYLING

Ruby Adds at Love Birds, Weddings & Events Ruby says: Opting for an intimate wedding allows you to create beautiful moments with your guests and ensures you have the time to connect with them all individually. Having a smaller guest list means you can treat yourselves and guests to some special touches. Consider having personalised favours, a portrait artist or a signature cocktail for reception drinks!.

Hayley says: Venue styling sets the tone for your day and even if your guest numbers are small, a friendly welcome area invites your guests into the venue.

www.mylovebirdswedding.com www.natalielaurenphotography.co.uk

Hayley Belcher at The English Wedding Co Hayley says: Intimate weddings don’t have to be basic, using a bright, bold colour palette will make a statement regardless of the guest list or venue size. Use more décor items throughout the day without any additional cost by moving the welcome sign or other pieces from the ceremony to the reception space.

www.theenglishweddingcompany.co.uk www.dcphotographic.co.uk

www.theenglishweddingcompany.co.uk https://leeshawilliamsphotography.pic-time.com

Katie Sutton at The Vintage House That Could Katie says: With fewer guests, couples have the option to splash out on more expensive tableware. Most venues offer simple crockery and glassware, but it’s always lovely to include a more luxurious feel with hired pieces. This image demonstrates how well this works with the use of blue and gold details and vintage glasses.

Katie says: Make the day more intimate by keeping the tables closer together and sharing your top table with more guests. Use handmade napkins to create a more relaxed feel and patterned wallpaper as a runner to add interest to the table. Your guests will be sat there for a long time enjoying each other’s company, so make it feel extra special!

hen it comes to setting the tone for your wedding day, hiring a venue stylist is a perfect way to bring your creative vision to life. This option takes away added stress and ensures all details big and small are taken care of while matching your theme and style. Here at Your East Midlands Wedding, we’ve asked experts from around the region to share inspiration and advice to make the planning process easier.

Ruby says: Smaller weddings allow you to find a venue with accommodation for all your guests; this means celebrations can last all weekend with a delicious meal and cocktails the night before, ending with a hearty brunch the following day. 53 

www.theenglishweddingcompany.co.uk

Hayley says: Having statement centrepieces doesn’t have to cost a fortune. This tablescape makes a significant impact and is made from cut tree branches that add height to your tables in an affordable way without hiring expensive pedestals.

Ruby says: Hiring a stationery designer is a must for large weddings. Suppliers can create bespoke packages for you including invitations, RSVP, order-of-service, a menu, seating plan, welcome sign and place cards. Not only do these beautifully designed items give weddings a personal touch, but they make a lovely memento. 54

www.mylovebirdswedding.com www.natalielaurenphotography.co.uk www.thevintagehousethatcould.co.uk https://bloomweddings.co.uk

Hayley says: Decorations are not just limited to the table but can be added to the surrounding floor area, where safe, to create a luxury feel. Move some ceremony décor in front of the reception tables or at the side to create the perfect space.

Ruby says: If your budget allows it, have some fun with floral designs and go for a selection of large statement floral pieces including an archway at the entrance of your ceremony. Cascading floral chandeliers suspended above your dining tables, or a magnificent flowerwall backdrop for your cake, will create eye-catching focal points and allow for stunning photo opportunities.

Katie says: Your dress style plays a big part in the rest of your wedding day scheme. If you have an ornate dress and veil, your flowers and decorations should all seamlessly work together. The flowers in your bouquet should echo the rest of the florals across the venue.

GRAND AFFAIRS

Katie says: Go all out with lots of flowers, charger plates, opulent gold centrepieces, sequins and coloured napkins on your tables. If the reception room is high enough, you can include tall centrepieces and lots of candles to make the space feel rich and luxurious.

Hayley says: Hiring trestle tables and charivari chairs can transform an outdoor space into a stunning dining and reception area. Dressing tables with soft chiffon table runners can create a beautiful starting point for your décor. Adding charger plates instantly lifts the table and creates a luxurious feel in relaxed surroundings.

Ruby says: Another aspect to consider is lighting; you can create beautiful zones and walkways within a large area using cleverly placed festoon lighting on shepherd hooks. You will require electricity for this, so hiring a generator is vital! You can be creative when it comes to catering choices; there are an abundance of amazing food trucks and outdoor catering options to explore – don’t forget a bar!

Ruby says: There’s something so indescribably magical about an outdoor wedding, whether it’s in your garden or in front of Katie says: Ensuring your guests can see and hear the ceremony is so important; make a stately home. When planning an outdoor wedding in the UK, sure the chairs are laid out correctly and create a walkway with rugs to help the space the most important thing to consider is hiring a wedding planner feel cosier. and have a backup plan in case of bad weather! Depending on your theme, you might want to use kilim rugs and large cushions or velvet sofas and coffee tables for a more refined look. If your wedding is in autumn or winter, create cosy seating areas around a firepit with warm blankets, sparklers and marshmallows!

Hayley says: Outdoor weddings can be easily styled on a budget as anything goes! This photo features recycled pallets beautifully dressed in a bold tablecloth to create a cosy outdoor vibe.

SILKY SMOOTH

I’d heard about the wonderous effects of silk on hair, but was slightly sceptical until I discovered British brand, This Is Silk. I can tell you I haven’t looked back since. If, like me, you’re growing concerned about the increasing knot of hair wrapped around your hair band, check out the silk skinnies. Made from 22 momme mulberry silk, they protect your hair from friction, kinks and damage, offering strong hold without the unwanted effects of a standard elastic hair band. No longer do I pull a clump of hair out of my head whenever I take my hair down and it already looks in much better condition overall. The bunny skinnies are my super-cute personal favourites, worth every penny. Head over to https://thisissilk.com, you won’t regret it!

Wedding wellness

The last year’s been tough – take some time out for self-care and focus on your wellbeing #HYDRATIONISKEY

We all know by now that hydration is imperative to good health and a key part of any beauty regime. And if you haven’t been told by now that it’s the key to your wedding skin prep – you will be! However, switching that second cup of coffee for tap water isn’t necessarily the easiest change to swallow. What if we told you there was something that hydrated you faster than ordinary water, tasted better and provided an energising alternative to that acidic cuppa? It’s time to say “hello” to alkaline water. Actiph Water is the UK’s first alkaline ionised water. Purified from Shropshire with added electrolytes and minerals it hydrates you fast and helps to give your skin it’s glow back. Find out more at https://actiphwater.com

After all, the importance of sleep when it comes to ultimate wellbeing can never be underestimated, it’s crucial for body and mind. Then there’s the Calming Sleep Stones, £11.95 – 200g of volcanic rock infused with essential oils to enhance your night-time routine. Finally, in the collection is the Calming Bath Salts, £4.95, perfect for washing away that build up of daily stress before bed. Treat yourself at www.thesomersettoiletryco.co.uk

#SCREENEYES Modern life means we spend more and more time on our devices and computers, and since you blink six to eight times less when you look at a screen, it’s no wonder that many of us are ending the day with tired and heavy eyes. Dry eye syndrome is a condition that affects around 80 per cent of us – a sobering thought considering screen use has increased by 187 per cent over the last three lockdowns. To combat this problem, modern eyecare brand Peep Club has launched its new Relief Eye Spray, £15, which hydrates eyes from the inside out with a clever combo of vegan-friendly, organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It’s suitable for even the most sensitive of peepers, as well as being safe for contact lens wearers and can be used over make-up. Check out www.peepclub.com

Q&A Our experts give their advice to help you look your big-day best

www.sophiemayphoto.co.uk

ALL ABOUT THAT BASE I want my skin to be as flawless as possible for my wedding; what steps can I take before applying make-up to achieve this? To create a flawless base, use a cleanser to remove any leftover make-up and gently exfoliate the skin the night before the special day. It’s essential to use a good moisturiser to prep and hydrate your skin and an eye cream to brighten the under-eye area. Bobbi Brown has some great moisturisers for all skin types; these products are a much-loved staple in my bridal kit. I also adore Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter as it leaves a beautiful glow that looks so luminous on the skin. For anyone with more oily skin, NARS do a great primer to reduce the appearance of pores and shine. Using the proper skincare and primers helps achieve a flawless make-up application as it gives you a perfectly prepped base to apply products onto. Hannah Finn | Hannah Finn Makeup Artist www.hannahfinnmakeup.com

LOVE IS IN THE HAIR How can I make sure my hair is in healthy condition ready for my wedding day? It’s a good idea to not have a haircut until after your hair trial because this allows your stylist to assess your hair’s condition and advise if a trim or a proper haircut is needed. You don’t want to run the risk of having too much taken off the length as this could affect the desired hairstyle on the wedding day. Make sure to never lighten your hair at home as this will never end well and you can cause irreparably damage. Always brush your hair from the ends first and try not to wear your hair in tight buns or braids too often as this can cause traction alopecia and breakage. Water is my number one recommendation for health in general, most people do not drink enough and busy brides are always the worst offenders – this is an important step and your hair and skin will thank you for it! Using heat-styling products are a major cause of split ends and dull, frazzled hair. It’s important to reduce any heat by letting your hair naturally dry halfway and then using a hairdryer to finish off the drying process. You can also switch the heat settings on hair tools from a high to medium heat and don’t go over the same area more than once – using heat protector sprays and sulphate-free shampoos make a difference! MAKING

waves

Kelly Andrews talks to bridal hair specialist Heather Dapaah about her top big-day looks

74

INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why? Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both. What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment? Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.

A

ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs eventready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.” Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.

I would say, start with the neckline of your desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with. Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.

If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their big-day, what would it be? Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.

What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair? Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.

Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look? I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.

How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day? Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.

What hair products or tools can’t you live without? For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.

What’s next for you? Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.

How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?

For further information, check out www.herdefinition.co.uk

What’s your main ethos when it comes to creating wedding hair? No matter what the look is I always try to create statement hair that’s timeless, classy and stylish. What’s your signature look? My clients always want my signature Hollywood waves, which instantly add glamour and volume to lustrous locks. It’s a timeless look that’s more than a trend, enhancing any wedding style. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I’ve been super fortunate in my career so far, especially on a global-scale as I get to meet lots of people. I’d have to say the highlight is the recognition I’ve received for the elegance of my bridal hairstyling. 75

BIG-DAY BEST

Couples inevitably want to look their ultimate big-day best for their wedding, which is why we’ve asked fashion and beauty experts from around the region to showcase inspiration and popular trends.

As the weather starts to get warmer, more brides are opting for light coverage make-up and relaxed hairstyles. The half-up half-down look is making a big comeback this year and allows brides to wear their hair partially down without compromising style. Brides can incorporate braids, add volume for a boho look or keep everything more structured for a luxurious finish. False lashes are growing in popularity as people are wanting to enhance their natural lashes thanks to social media influences being a source of beauty information over the past year. There are so many different styles out there to suit every type of bride. If masks are still required this summer, many make-up artists will use longlasting lip colours (matte is transfer-resistant) and a good setting spray to ensure the make-up stays in place during these unusual times. Lastly, remember wearing a smile is your greatest accessory! Check out: www.bridalhairandmakeupleicestershire.com

RUBY JONES, MAKEUP ARTIST AT RUBY J BEAUTY After spending months stuck behind a screen, it’s time to become creative with make-up. Many beauty trends over the years have included classic and safe looks, but couples are now thinking outside the box and using make-up as a vessel for their identity now more than ever. Editorial-style make-up, that we’ve seen on runways and in magazines, is making its way into mainstream wedding styling. Faces adorned with pearls and stripped back glowing complexions will be taking over from the airbrushed looks we’ve seen over the last few seasons. Metallic shades won’t disappear, but will be used for an all-over glow rather than structurally placed on the lids. Bright lip products will be replacing classic nude shades when paired with a sculpted smoky eye, and blush is making a comeback from ’80s pop culture. For brides after a more subtle look, don’t worry as there’s always a place for natural-styled looks. Check out: www.rubyjbeauty.com

ROBYN WOOD, HAIRSTYLIST AT PERFECT SILHOUETTE HAIRDRESSING There are some great trends coming up this summer and one of them being all about texture, whether it’s a half-up half-down style or a low or high bun. Brides can create a messy and boho textured look with beach-style waves, or opt for defined curls styled into an updo for an elegant but undone style. Another trend this year is the bridal ponytail, an everyday style that’s a huge hit this wedding season. Clients can combine both trends by having beach waves styled into a mid-height, voluminous ponytail. Why not add fishtail braids, which are super popular at the moment, or twists to add some wow factor? Headbands are this year’s go-to accessory, there are so many different pieces that will suit any look. Brides can pick simple or statement items with sequin, diamanté or floral touches. BIG-DAY BEST CHANTELLE HEWITT, JEWELLERY DIRECTOR AT CRYSTELLE BELLE LTD Sentimental jewellery is a huge summer 2021 trend think: lockets and keepsakes engraved with a personal message, birthstone or birth flower designs. Heirloom jewellery is popular this year with brides incorporating items such as their nan’s pearls as their something borrowed. Couples might even like to start an heirloom collection of their own and gorgeous art-deco-inspired pieces are perfect! We’ve also seen an upward trend in classic mens’ jewellery, such as the identity bracelet, signet ring and St Christopher pendant. Another huge trend on the catwalks this spring and summer is pearls, which have crossed over from being bought mainly for weddings and anniversaries to mainstream fashion jewellery. This is great for brides-to-be who now have an extensive choice from classic strings of pearls, single-pearl pendants and pearl hoop earrings. Finally, the one piece of jewellery that never goes out of fashion is the tennis bracelet. A staple piece looks fabulous and elegant, whether in 9ct white gold and diamonds or sterling silver and cubic zirconia. Check out: www.crystellebelle.co.uk

After the effect of last year’s pandemic on the wedding industry, typical trends have taken a back seat as people are just so happy to finally be tying the knot! For those looking for big-day suit inspiration for 2021, you can’t go wrong with bold colourful suits or striking checked patterns – perfect for al fresco summer nuptials, which will be oh-so popular this year and next. Colour palettes of blues, greens and reds – think berry tones – are the musthave suit hues, and the mix ‘n’ match ensemble is a trend that’s here to stay. If you’re not confident wearing something quite as standout as mentioned, then reflect these style elements in your accessory choices: ties, waistcoats, pocket squares, socks and shoes! TOPIC Top advice for the perfect wedding

VINTAGE CLASSICS For our vintage wedding, I’m looking for accessories to finish off my look. What would you suggest? Vintage-style weddings are so on-trend right now and you can incorporate one or two elements into your accessories, even if you don’t want to embrace the theme fully. The wedding dress usually dictates the type of accessories chosen. Flowers and leaves on a hair vine, woven through a plait or around the forehead for a ’70s look works perfectly for boho styles – jewellery can be delicate gold bees or butterflies, silver feathers or maybe a pearl pendant! If you’re looking for a Gatsby style, slim-fitted and heavily-beaded dresses look amazing with sparkling hair combs or tiaras. If you’re reflecting the ’20s, then a feathered headpiece works well with a fabulous pair of glittering Swarovski drop earrings. The ’40s and ’50s were full of elegance and style; opt for tea-length dresses, classic string pearls and matching studs for a timeless look that’s never out of fashion. Birdcage veils also bring a touch of vintage glamour to any wedding dress. For those Hollywood-style brides, glittering hair combs studded with crystals and a gorgeous statement necklace and earrings will epitomise the theme. Chantelle Hewitt | Crystelle Belle Jewellers www.crystellebelle.co.uk

FASHION-FORWARD I want to look my best for our whimsical-themed wedding, what suit would you suggest? A whimsical style embraces the non-traditional elements of a wedding and is all about making your day special to you and your style, while keeping in mind the venue and colour palette. It’s a good idea is to combine sophisticated tailoring with relaxed elements such as checks, jacquard, tweed, stripes, plain or even florals. Mix and match colours, patterns and textures. More importantly, have fun with your outfit choice! Glynis Staddon | Blidworth Menswear | www.blidworthmenswear.co.uk

EXPERT ADVICE

THE WRITE STUFF We’re getting married next June, but we’re not sure when to send save-the-date and wedding invitations out. What would you suggest? Save-the-date cards are used to inform guests of your wedding date to ensure they don’t book holidays or other events on the day. I advise you send them out around one year before the wedding, but essentially it’s your choice. As for your invitations, any time between three to six months before the day is ideal, but there’s a few things to take into consideration like if your venue needs a guest list earlier or if the day is during high-peak season or school holidays? This is particularly important if your guests want to book local accommodation as places get booked up quickly. Make sure to allow for enough time to change the guest list if you have a ‘bump up’ list of evening guests in case people can’t make the ceremony. Emily Hughes | Bluebell Press | www.bluebellpress.co.uk

PICTURE PERFECT I want our photographer to capture beautiful images at our wedding, but I’m really camera shy. How can I get around this? If you’re camera shy, choose a photographer with a documentary style to capture natural photos without you feeling uncomfortable in forced poses. Feeling relaxed is a huge factor when choosing a company, which is why it’s so important to meet the supplier and make sure you all get along. We actually end up being friends with a lot of our clients and this has helped them feel more at ease in front of the lens. We’ve found that even the most camera-shy people have a lot more confidence on their wedding day because it’s not only the best day of their lives, but they look and feel a million dollars. DRESSED TO IMPRESS What tips can you share when it comes to creating a bespoke gown? When it comes to creating a bespoke gown, the designer needs to get to know you and your desired look. It’s always good to collect images representing the mood and tone of the wedding, either on Pinterest or the old-fashioned way with magazine cuttings! I always have a couple of initial meetings with my brides to talk through ideas, choose fabric samples and create sketch ideas. Save images of the kind of styles you like, even if it’s just a small detail like necklines, skirt shapes or sleeves as this will help the design process. You can try on dresses at this stage from my range to see what suits you best – try on lots of styles and keep an open mind. Once you have picked a style, make sure to have your intended underwear when the measurements are taken to ensure a perfect fit. During the first fitting, you can make as many changes as needed before the fabric is cut. It’s so important to always speak up and talk to your dressmaker about any worries or ideas you may have.

Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

L

ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say! My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way! He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup

plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit. Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know! We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and overbudgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.

THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers and budget, we began the exciting part – looking 90

at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process. They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it. Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold! Next issue, hear all about our plans for the food – my favourite bit – and finding our photographer!

Melissa. x

BRIDE’S DIARY

Dave and I want quite a simple cake that’s full of delicious chocolate – yum! I love the idea of incorporating log slices throughout the day to add a rustic touch.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.

I adore macrame and have been learning how to do it in my spare time. We’re planning to make an arch to place behind us when we get married.

Our plan is to hire long wooden tables mixed with a few round versions.

Hanging lights are a popular trend that we’re thinking of using in our venue’s grounds.

We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.

Gold or rose gold cutlery is a must have!

This elegant envelope is exactly what we’re looking for. 91

DEREK MCALLISTER PHOTOGRAPHY Nottingham based, award winning, wedding photographer and artist. I provide professional, timeless imagery which tells the story of your day and captures memories that you can treasure for a lifetime. My name’s Derek, and I love to tell stories. Weddings are amazing, they’re a fusion of artistry and emotion; of love and happiness. Of smiles and tears (of joy) all bundled into a single crazy day. I’ve been privileged enough to be at many weddings and the best part, for me, is being able to capture all those moments which are over in a flash, but when put together make the most amazing tale which you can treasure forever. You’re in safe hands when you commission me to capture your amazing day. I’m always honoured and delighted when anyone chooses me to be part of one of the biggest days of their life and it’s a responsibility that I do not take for granted.
