De Vere collection donates to NHS Charities Together
De Vere, a collection of historic mansion house estates and distinctive contemporary hotels across the UK with properties located in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, has donated £202,248 to NHS Charities Together to help NHS staff, volunteers and patients at the centre of the Covid-19 crisis. The money was raised when De Vere pledged a proportion of the value of each direct bedroom booking, including VAT, to NHS Charities Together* after the hotels were allowed to open in August 2020. De Vere’s donation will help support NHS staff, volunteers and patients in key areas including welfare and wellbeing, assistance for patients leaving hospital, and long-term mental health support for NHS workers. Tony Troy, CEO at De Vere said: “We continue to be humbled by the extraordinary efforts from those working on the front line to help us in the fight against Covid-19. We all have a part to play to help defeat the virus and the donation is just another way as a company that we can give back and thank the NHS for all their hard work and sacrifice. We would like to thank all the guests who stayed with us last summer, helping to raise the money.” Ellie Orton, chief executive of NHS Charities Together, said: “We’re so grateful to De Vere for its support of NHS Charities Together. Donations mean NHS charities across the country can continue to be there for NHS staff, volunteers, and patients – helping with immediate needs, and supporting mental health and wellbeing, now and in the future. Thank you to De Vere and its customers for supporting our appeal.” Hotels in the portfolio include De Vere Cotswold Water Park located in South Cerney, Gloucestershire, surrounded by a nature reserve and beautiful lakes, and De Vere Tortworth Court situated in Wottonunder-Edge set within a 30-acre estate home to a Victorian arboretum housing more than 300 plant and tree specimens. REAL WEDDINGS
A
shley and Daniel met at university in 2013. “We got chatting at a party and ended up talking for most of the night,” the couple tell us. “The following day we went on a wonderful date where we enjoyed a walk along the beach followed by cocktails and a movie night. Our relationship developed from there.” The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal. “Dan proposed to me at the top of Cadair Idris in Wales, the first mountain that we’d climbed together during our university days,” Ashley explains. “It was a complete surprise when it happened.”
SETTING THE SCENE The couple chose the stunning Wellington Barn located in Calne as their wedding venue. “It’s such a beautiful place which isn’t too far from where we live,” Ashley and Daniel tell us. “We walk our dogs around the area so we already knew about the wonderful location and it was a firm favourite of ours from the start.” The couple decided on a navy and sage green woodland theme to decorate their day. “We chose succulents, moss and green foliage for our floral arrangements to reflect our love of nature and tie in with our woodland theme,” they tell us. “Our semi-naked cake sat on a large log slice surrounded by foliage and heather while smaller log holders presented our table names which were inspired by our pets. We have much-loved dogs, chickens and ducks so these were all printed onto different cards.”

“All our chosen suppliers and the staff at the venue were so professional and helped us source everything that we wanted which made our day perfect!” - Ashley and Daniel
Ashley and Daniel used wine bottles topped with dripping candles as their centrepieces. “We wrote each place name on brown tags and attached them to the candles. They looked great and worked well with our table plan which was a cork board decorated with hessian, twine and wooden pegs. We also had hessian bunting and plenty of childhood photographs decorating our venue and we gifted our guests a Yankee candle and sweets as favours. Our groomsmaids also received a rose gold bracelet each.” Ashley and Daniel decided on sharing platters for their wedding breakfast. “The caterers did a wonderful job,” the couple tell us, “and the platters were a sociable choice to get guests talking.”
LOOKING THE PART Ashley wore a navy suit with a sage green tie while Daniel wore
a grey suit teamed with a navy tie. “We both had a thistle pocket flower and our groomsmaids each wore a hair comb decorated with a thistle that matched these,” the couple explain. “They coordinated with us in our suits in their stylish sage and navy dresses and we allowed them to choose a style that suited them and that they would feel comfortable wearing all day and evening.”
TIME TO ENTERTAIN The couple hired a DJ for their evening party and guests also took advantage of the great outdoors. “It was glorious weather so our loved ones explored the stunning surroundings and meadow,” Ashley and Daniel tell us. “The venue also have firepits outside that we lit and gave everyone marshmallows to toast along with sparklers which they all loved!” 25

Karen and Symon met online in 2014. “I was attracted to him straightaway!” Karen tells us. “Our conversation and humour flowed from the start so we decided to go on a date which was really good fun. We were meant to be having lunch but ended up spending the entire day together and both knew then that we had each met our match.” The couple became engaged in a surprise proposal during a holiday to Jamaica. “Symon had organised a private dinner for us on the beach,” Karen tells us. “He had asked my parents’ permission before our trip which made the proposal very special because they are quite traditional. We’re amazed that my dad managed to keep it a secret!” Here, Karen tells us all about their special day at the magnificent Eastington Park.

EXPERT ADVICE
HOT TOPIC Our experts answer your questions
PICTURE-PERFECT
We’ve just become engaged – how do we go about finding a good photographer? Meet the expert: Emily Collett is a wedding photographer based in Wiltshire covering weddings throughout the Cotswolds. She’s a champion for introverts, vowing to make everyone feel relaxed and reassured in front of the lens, even the most camera-shy! Emily says: Firstly, it’s important to decide on the style of wedding photography that you want, for example, do you require your images to be light and airy, warm and colourful or dark and moody? Alongside the photographer’s style, it’s important to research how they capture the day. For example, if you’re looking for relaxed, candid and natural shots, images of the finer details or more of a formal feel then check how they document a full day and ask to see full albums of their work, not just a selection of images. For me, a connection is everything. I say this because you wouldn’t invite a stranger to your wedding so the same applies to your wedding photographer. As you’ll be spending much of your day in the presence of your photographer, you want them to be somebody who you can relax in front of, as you would your loved ones. To see if you’re a good fit, ask whether they offer a meeting via Facetime or Zoom, or a phone chat, just so that you can see if your personalities align. Booking an engagement shoot, if your chosen photographer provides this service, is a great opportunity to relax in front of the
camera before your wedding day. It’s also a great way to get to know your photographer and of course, leave with some memorable couple portraits! Check whether the photographer’s prices are within your budget. Photography is an expensive part of a wedding but it’s an investment, and the photographs will be enjoyed for years to come so try not to compromise on this. It’s also important to remember that you aren’t paying for them simply to attend on the day. They’re available for advice, guidance and support beforehand plus there are hours of editing the images after the wedding. I would always recommend investing in a second shooter if your budget allows it. Your photographer can’t be in two places at once so the second shooter will snap the groom’s preparation, guests arriving, additional angles, extra candid shots, those all-important details and much more, making sure that everything’s covered. They also offer invaluable assistance in wet weather, and peace of mind in the event of your photographer falling ill on the day. Finally, if your preferred photographer isn’t available, don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations. They’re likely to know other reliable, friendly, similarly priced photographers and point you in the right direction. HOME-FROM-HOME
We want to book a micro wedding at a venue where the team can help us with the majority of the planning. Where do you suggest?
Catherine says: We’re seeing an upsurge in micro wedding enquiries and bookings lately. The advantage of being a smaller, family-run venue is that we’re able to adapt quickly, a skill that has recently been put to good test! Small, intimate weddings have become very popular, especially those with 30 guests or less. While some couples have altered their plans and reduced numbers, others are delighted that smaller weddings are fast becoming accepted as the social norm so that they can justify a smaller guest list - an early indicator that the micro wedding is here to stay. Behind the scenes at Purton House is one big happy family each with their role to play in hosting weddings, meaning that we can take the worry and stress out of the planning for couples. The owner’s daughter, Talia, is the caterer and talent behind Cotswold Cooks (www.cotswoldcooks.co.uk). She takes care of the menus, inspired by the food choices important to each couple. Her sister, Rowie, runs the Organic Farm at Purton House, providing the eggs, meat and vegetables from the Walled Garden that Talia uses in her dishes, (www.purtonhouseorganics.co.uk). Daughter Ibby handmakes the finest quality chocolates which she can personalise for each couple (www.ibbyschocolatekitchen.co.uk). Purton House | www.purtonhouse.co.uk www.facebook.com/PurtonHouse 46

ON THE MENU Teri Collett from Gloucestershire-based Cotswold Events talks dishes for a micro wedding. She suggests, “Choose a menu that’s nostalgic, intimate, personal and decadent. Maybe it’s reminiscent of the first meal you had together, your first childhood food memory or grandma’s sticky toffee pudding that takes you back in time. Either way, this is the perfect opportunity to make your day very special with your nearest and dearest.”

Teri suggests hiring an aperitif bar or placing the aperitif in beautiful bottles displayed on tables. She tells us, “This is a great choice to pair with food because they’re often lighter and less alcoholic than traditional cocktails. Why not go British with your choice of aperitif? Try sherry, dessert wine and gin (in equal measures) mixed with one tablespoon of dried local lavender. Seep the lavender in the alcohol overnight and serve with soda or tonic water and plenty of ice.” Mixologist Connor from the Cotswold Gin Company adds, “Try using lavender bitters (made locally by Cotswold Gin) and team with two tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice.”
Sally Ann Pickles, managing director of Vanilla Catering & Events serving weddings throughout Gloucestershire and Wiltshire tells us how wedding catering is going to be different post-pandemic. She says, “It doesn’t mean that dishes will be less scrumptious but presentation styles and methods will alter. For example, canapés will need to be plated and pre-portioned so that each guest has their individual plate. The upside to this is that everyone gets their fair share! On that note, buffets and barbecues can still be served plated, and the key is to keep food simple, fresh and piping hot. You could also give guests a boxed picnic each, perfect for a summer micro wedding complete with blankets and hay bales..” Sally also explains how, with fewer guest numbers, couples can have a five or six-course wedding breakfast by adding in sorbet, a local cheeseboard served individually to each guest and petit fours. “Why not surprise your guests with a cheeseboard serving French varieties and add a variety of wines to complement each course?”

Not only will it look cool, but it’ll also be a great ice-breaker!”

No need for needles! CLEAN AND CLEAR
We all know about the barrage of environmental abuse our facial skin battles on a daily basis, but what about our scalps? They too are faced with the impact of sweat, pollution, and various styling products. Centred creative director Kieran Tudor says, “Good scalp health is crucial for strong, healthy, beautiful hair, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to hair care regimes.” A deeply nourishing blend of olive, argan and hemp oils, Centred En-Root Scalp Treatment replenishes moisture to dry brittle hair, while exfoliating the scalp and removing product build up and dead skin cells. What’s more, the blend of rosemary and peppermint essential oils stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles maximising hair growth potential. Priced at £36 from www.wearecentred.com
Self-tanning fave Skinny Tan has unveiled its latest product – Notox Beauty Elixir. So, say “no” to Botox, and “yes” to Notox! Getting Zoom-ready and embracing the minimal make-up look has never been easier. Notox Beauty Elixir is available at www.skinnytan.co.uk, priced at £19.99.

Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glo, £19.99 Available at Argos, ASDA, Boots, Tesco and Wilko Dermaplaning as a salon treatment has been around for a while, and quite frankly the very thought of it has always terrified me. So, I wasn’t too sure what to expect of this tool. I did my research on the benefits, genned up on this super-useful tutorial and I was ready to go. Wow, I don’t know what I was so worried about. It was easy to do and took no more than five to 10 minutes. Probably 10 for me as I got a bit addicted and couldn’t stop – I don’t recommend that though. It’s an incredibly satisfying process seeing all of that peach fuzz and dead skin disappear. I couldn’t believe how smooth my skin felt afterwards. Leave your skin to rest for around eight hours afterwards before you apply any skin products or make-up as it’s quite an intense exfoliation process, then repeat every two to four weeks. I can’t wait to see how regular use improves my skin further. I’m definitely sold on dermaplaning!

Kevyn Aucoin Kaleidochrome All-Over Highlight Palette, £39 www.lookfantastic.com This multi-tasking palette offers four shades of highlight suitable whatever the look you’re going for. I particularly loved the darker rose Space Party, which I used on my cheeks over my blusher for a radiant glow and Super Cosmic, which I added to the arch of my eyebrows and very top of my cheekbones. It really brought a multi-dimensional look to my make-up that can be tailored for day or night.
Eve Lom Radiance Transforming Mask, £65 www.spacenk.com I was surprised to find a balm texture when I first removed the lid, so was interested to see how this would go. Using the supplied spatula to remove the required amount of mask from the tub, I opted for generous dollop and began to massage it into my face as instructed. Its thick formula felt incredibly luxurious and I could already tell it was going to provide a pampering experience. I was particularly delighted by the advice to leave for a minimum of 30 minutes, which gave me an excuse to relax for a decent amount of time – none of this 10 minutes rubbish! When it was time to remove with warm water, I was delighted to find my skin looking renewed, beautifully supple and glowing.
PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP CWM’s beauty editor puts this season’s best buys to the test creating a head-to-toe makeover session you’ll love
Sculpted by Aimee Connolly Lip Duo, £18 www.sculptedbyaimee.com I’m a huge advocate for lip liners and their myriad benefits, but I do struggle to know which shade goes with which lipstick, find the two become separated and will admit to resenting buying both in the first place. So, these Lip Duos are a blessing! Not only are they perfectly colour matched offering you two products for the average price of one, but if your make-up bag is already packed, like mine, they offer a smart solution. I tried Mauve Match, which is a versatile neutral shade, ideal for everyday wear.
No Secrets One Body Jelly, £49 www.nosecretsbeauty.com This jellied body oil smells absolutely incredible with No Secrets’ signature blend of essential oils – bergamot, juniper, petitgrain, eucalyptus and lavender. Less messy than a traditional body oil, you just need to massage a little in at a time for smooth and beautifully soft skin. Plus, the amazing fragrance lasts. Perfect for a pamper. 70
Margaret Dabbs Cracked Heel Treatment, £18 www.margaretdabbs.co.uk Let me start by confessing that my heels are horrendous, always cracked and dry and nothing I try makes a difference. Until now that is. This product was well and truly put through its paces by my horrible hooves and the results were instant. After just one application the sandpaper effect was gone and with continued use it really is a miracle worker. It’s my new beauty essential, and I can’t wait to get the flip flops on!

EXPERT ADVICE
Beauty
Q&A
These talented local make-up artists reveal all ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS
YOU GLOW, GIRL!
Meet the expert: Emily David is a bridal make-up specialist and hair stylist based in Melksham, Wiltshire.
Meet the expert: Niamh Ford is an award-winning make-up artist covering weddings throughout the regions.
As the current restrictions in place ease, what are the summer trends for bridal make-up?
How can I prepare for my bridal make-up trial?
Emily says: Two key looks are set to be trending this summer and the first is a sun-kissed bronze glow. To create this, I recommend applying a smoky bronze shade on your eyelids like the Voyageur Eyeshadow Palette in Suede from Nars. Next, add Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick Compact in Bronze, an ultra-fine brush-on powder, to your cheeks. Gently build the colour for a radiant look and don’t forget to dab some on the end of your nose and your forehead. Finally, line your natural lip line with Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk by Charlotte Tilbury and fill in the colour with the new Hyaluronic Happikiss lipstick, also in the classic Pillow Talk shade. The second trend this summer is all about adding pops of vibrant bold colour. Firstly, apply a good-quality foundation like Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Foundation available in more than 44 shades. Mix it with Wonderglow Primer, also by Charlotte Tilbury, to achieve a fresh, dewy glow. This provides a good base and then, if you want to build up colour, it’s all about working with complementary tones. I highly recommend the Liquid Blush in Torrid by Nars which is a shimmering coral creme blush that works beautifully on dark and light skin tones. Whatever lipstick shade you pick to finish your look, make sure it’s a strong one. My top tip is to be sure to finish with a good setting spray like Prep + Prime by Mac, especially in warmer weather. For your hair, why not opt for a sleek and shiny side bun with plenty of volume which works well with a bronzed look? Finish with a shine spray like L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Ring Light, the first micro-dispersed professional spray for the lightest effect. If you’re blessed with natural curls, I’d recommend using a Moroccan curl defining cream and finish by adding a little glamour with a jewelled hair slide.
Niamh says: As a professional make-up artist, many of my brides ask me this question. Before attending your bridal make-up trial, research any looks that you like. I encourage my clients to bring along inspiration, for example, photographs found on Instagram. It’s important to find out what you like and what you don’t like. Don’t panic if you have no idea, though! We can discuss how you normally wear your make-up and how you’d change it for an event. We can also consider details of your day so that we can potentially incorporate these into your bridal make-up. For example, if your bouquet is going to feature blush flowers, we can find you the perfect lipstick shade to match. Bringing along photographs of your dress, shoes, accessories and colour theme can be very helpful. I always ask my brides-to-be to arrive with a freshly cleansed face so that we can begin with a blank canvas. During your bridal trial, I can offer skincare advice, should you need it. Small, consistent changes introduced into your daily routine will deliver beautiful results. On your wedding day, you’ll want to look and feel your very best and often skincare can be overlooked. Taking time to improve your regime is so important and will only help you to achieve the ultimate bridal glow.

amed for her flawless skin, popular TV personality Jess Wright is a busy, gogetting woman. Whether she’s on a shoot, busy filming, hosting her podcast – Girls #NoFilter, planning next year’s wedding to William Lee-Kemp, or hard at work in her role as Crystal Clear’s first celebrity ambassador, her perfect skin is the envy of all. Keen to know her secret, CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews sat down for a chat with the reality star to get the lowdown, just for you! Jess, thanks for making time in your hectic schedule to talk to us and huge congratulations on your forthcoming wedding. How do you imagine your big day? Thank you! I imagine it to be beautiful, full of love and hopefully classy. As long as I’m surrounded by my family and loved ones, that’s the most important thing. How did William propose? He did it on the balcony of our beautiful hotel room in the mountains in Courchevel. It was both spectacular and amazing. What’s your vision for your bridal beauty look? Good skin is the perfect base so I’ll be prepping with some fab Crystal Clear COMCIT facials in the run up to the big day for sure. Then I’ll want my make-up to be slightly natural, with that dewy glow and some wispy lashes.
Absolutely

Do you have a picture of your dream dress in mind? I’ve tried on so many dresses, but I definitely have a vision. I think I’ve chosen the one. Completely understand you playing the cards close to your chest there! We look forward to the surprise. As the voice of experience, can you share with us your top wedding planning tips? I’d say, make sure you have a good wedding planner. Also, do the guest list, but don’t send the invitations out until later, as it’ll definitely alter as time goes on! So many couples have been forced to re-plan their weddings as a result of the pandemic. Have you encountered any such difficulties and do you have any advice for other couples facing the same challenges? We’ve considered moving the wedding, but
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
at the minute it’s a day-by-day update, so we’re going to make the final decision in the spring. If you’re not time restricted, I’d say move yours to 2022 if possible, so you can really enjoy the process rather than struggling through the pandemic. Leading a jam-packed celebrity lifestyle while planning a wedding must make you an extremely busy lady! How do you juggle it all while still looking fabulous and flawless? I love keeping busy, so I was really excited about planning a wedding on top of my already hectic lifestyle, but unfortunately
that hasn’t happened as the pandemic and various lockdowns have slowed me down. It has meant though that I’ve had plenty of time on my hands to plan the wedding! What are your make-up bag must haves? I love Chanel foundation for a quick matte bronze. Also, a good eyebrow pencil and a nourishing lip balm. I always keep the Crystal Clear Beach Glow Tanning Drops in my kit too. They’re amazing for adding a subtle glow to your skin and you can dial it up depending on the depth of colour you’re looking for. Tell us why you love Crystal Clear. I’m so excited to be chosen as the first ever ambassador for Crystal Clear Skincare. Their products are my holy grail and having tried so many different brands over the years, I just love the results you get with Crystal Clear, so it’s amazing to be working with the brand. The range is extensive with something to suit all skin types and concerns. The Ionic Sonic2 Microdermabrasion Kit is my ultimate secret to Insta-ready, super-cleansed skin. I’m also a big fan of the salon treatments, especially the COMCIT facial. It really is the most fantastic treatment for softer, firmer and hydrated skin.
Which is your favourite product from the range? I’d have to say The Lifting Wand, one of the brand’s beauty tools. It comes with its pharma-grade product, which is packed with hyaluronic acid. You use it for 60 seconds every day and it gives you deep hydration, depuffs eyes, plumps skin and lifts it. It’s really easy to use and fits into your daily routine. For a quick skin fix, I’d also highly recommend the 10 Minute Glow Mask, which literally does what it says on the tin and gives you glowing skin in just 10 minutes. It’s incredibly satisfying to peel off as well! What’s your number one beauty tip for brides? Focus on your skin. Glowing skin is the best thing on your wedding day in terms of beauty, so do whatever you need to make it feel its best. Finally, what’s next for you? Hopefully my wedding! Also, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, the musical I’m in. This is all dependant on the pandemic though. Sending my love to everyone at this time. Retreat to ty the ci
Hannah Faulder visits The Marylebone, and finds out that it offers the best of both worlds for a minimoon in the capital
A
s the country prepared for Lockdown Part II, my husband and I managed to sneak in a last-minute escape to the city to enjoy a much-needed retreat at The Marylebone. Nestled in the hotel’s supertrendy namesake neighbourhood, between the Georgian Welbeck Street and the partpedestrianised Marylebone Lane, you’re just a short walk from London’s most famous Monopoly locations, from Bond Street to Mayfair. Stepping out for a stroll from the hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in a bustling Cotswolds village – that is until you happen upon Oxford Street. But this is what makes it such a wonderful destination for a minimoon or post-wedding break: it’s close to the action, but it provides a tranquil retreat from it too.
STAY Cross the threshold, and you’ll find a neutral palette offsets the pops of colour and modern paintings on the walls perfectly. Look carefully, and you’ll notice a subtle design scheme reflecting the four seasons as you walk through the hotel. Following an extensive refurbishment, the striking decor extends throughout, and no luxurious touch has been spared. Classic timber flooring, marble-topped counters and wood panelling blend seamlessly with curated artwork and designer furniture. There’s a
whole host of event spaces too for weddings and celebrations with real character; I particularly loved the verdant Palm Room and the sociable al fresco terraces. Our corner suite was chic and fresh, its spacious circular layout houses a small kitchen area, complete with Nespresso machine, a sumptuous living area, dining table and huge marshmallowy bed. “We could live here,” my husband and I kept saying to each other. We sat, champagne in hand, and gazed out of the window over the pretty streets of Marylebone with the city lights glittering in the distance; it had a distinct Mary Poppins vibe. The striking marble bathroom boasted a huge bath, walk-in shower and trendy Malin+Goetz toiletries. The welcome pack with COVIDsafe goodies like hand sanitiser was gratefully received, and the hotel clearly states all the measures it has taken to look after guests’ wellbeing. Looking to really treat yourself and your loved one? The super-stylish Marylebone Suite has a showstopping cedar-clad terrace, with a retractable roof, awesome vistas and an outdoor TV and fireplace – it’s certainly memorable! While you’re here, why not treat yourself to some R&R in the Third Space Health Club, with its gym and 18m pool.
EAT We dragged ourselves away from the champagne and fluffy robes long enough to enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, 108 Brasserie. This is not a typical hotel restaurant, more a fabulous eatery for locals and tourists alike
that just happens to be attached. Set on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane, the outdoor seating with patio heaters makes it look so inviting. Inside, you’ll find traditional style with a modern edge, from rich upholstery and parquet flooring to antique mirrors and decadent florals. The meals on the globally inspired menu feature fresh ingredients with a focus on seasonality. Yummy burrata, salads and decadent desserts were the order of the day, making the restaurant a mustvisit for guests.
EXPLORE The next morning, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast (one vegetarian) in bed, with hearty portions served under silver cloches, before heading out on foot to explore the neighbourhood. This soon turned into a wonderful day strolling through the nearby Royal Parks, spotting parrots and pelicans before ducking into a café for a takeaway coffee as we meandered up The Mall to take in Buckingham Palace. Next up was a stroll through Hyde Park and into the shopping mecca that is Oxford Street before heading back for a quiet drink at the hotel’s bar – perfection! If you don’t get the best weather, though, the capital’s attractions are within easy reach on public transport – or you could just hunker down in your room and luxuriate in your newly wedded bliss.
