y much-loved parents are celebrating 50 years of genuinely happy marriage this June which, in this day and age, is a remarkable achievement. Not only have they provided a happy home life for my brother and me to grow up in – and there’s not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for the carefree childhood that we had – they still provide a loving family unit for us now that we’re adults. When I watch how they love, respect and support one another, take care of each other and talk and laugh a lot, I realise that these are the key ingredients to a long and successful marriage. As a family, we’ll be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary this June and I can’t wait. Another big celebration taking place in June is The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and plenty of our local suppliers will be taking part, including Gloucestershire-based cheesemongers Paxton & Whitfield who have launched their Jubilee Celebration Cheese Cakes. Whatever you’re planning for the extended bank holiday weekend, enjoy this historic milestone. In this issue, we have real-life couples at the start of their marital journey, who I wish all the very best plus styled shoots and venue dressing inspiration, expert advice, offers, news and more.

THE FROGMILL AWARDED GLOUCESTERSHIRE PUB OF THE YEAR 2022 The Frogmill located in the Cotswold hamlet of Shipton Oliffe has been named Best Pub in Gloucestershire by the National Pub & Bar Awards 2022. More than 500 British pubs nationwide entered the awards and each was subject to intensive judging covering overall best practice across several operational categories including interior design, outside space, customer service, menus and drinks lists. The National Pub & Bar Awards aims to put exemplary on-trade businesses across the UK in the national spotlight whilst showcasing the hospitality industry’s diversity, creativity and vital importance to the UK economy. Tristan O’Hana, the editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which runs the National Pub & Bar Awards, said, “This is an industry that never stands still – the operators of the best pubs have to be at the top of their game 100% of the time. Our 94 County Winners are shining examples of that energy and creativity. With visitor numbers increasing, it’s more important than ever for operators to deliver a standout service during every visit. These winners are wonderful examples of the brilliance of today’s modern trade and the team at The Frogmill are to be congratulated.” The Frogmill is a stylish and spacious retreat of Cotswolds stone buildings and at its core is a 16th-century inn. Outside

eremonies

Are Here To Stay It’s official! Outdoor ceremonies are now a permanent fixture. Is your dream to say your vows barefoot on the lawn with sun shining overhead, breeze in your hair, birds singing in the trees? We can’t guarantee the weather, but the open sky is now all yours.

phy at a r g o t o h P errie James & K n Estate t o g n i l l i D Barn, The Cider Originally brought in as a temporary covid measure, the law changed in April to allow couples to say I Do outside at any existing licensed venue. Somerset Registration Service has been working with wedding venues across Somerset & North Somerset to give couples a greater choice of spots to say their vows. There are still a few essential boxes to tick for safety and accessibility, but otherwise all venues with gardens or outside space may be able to offer that open air option you’re looking for.

Simon & Kiana Photography at Huntstile Organic Farm

Our Outdoor Top Tips Inside or out, only licensed venues can hold legal ceremonies, so still no vows on the beach or on top of Glastonbury Tor. Ceremonies can be held anywhere in the gardens and grounds. It’s worth not straying too far away though – bathroom breaks, catering top ups, and getting yourself from the prep room to the aisle are major considerations. Let your venue help you find the perfect spot – trust them, they know what will work for everyone on the day. Make sure the site is accessible for your guests – heels, mobility issues and grassy hills aren’t a great combination! Let your guests know the plan – they might want to opt for a change of sensible shoes and an extra cosy layer or a broader brimmed hat and some sun screen. Have a bad weather backup plan. This is England, after all. Don’t feel bad if you need to head inside. We’ll make sure the ceremony is so full of love you’ll forget you had to switch plans!

While the old rules already allowed outdoor vows with the wedding party standing under a permanent structure like a gazebo or bandstand, this really does free things up. Venues have added stone circles, private woodlands, walled gardens and lakeside lawns to their ceremony offers – even marquees now get the go ahead. Spots where only nonlegal blessings could take place are now a choice for the real deal. Our registrar teams are super excited about a season of joining happy couples in some truly gorgeous new locations.

OXLEAZE BARN, LECHLADE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE Oxleaze is a family-run sustainable and organic working farm with cows, horses, chickens, ducks and dogs. It’s situated off the beaten track deep in the countryside, five miles from Lechlade and seven miles from Burford. The barns have been lovingly restored to create a rustic wedding venue with accommodation for up to 12 guests spread between Stable Cottage and the recently converted Dutch Barn. The Main Barn was previously a grain store and dates back to the 1700s. It’s a beautiful space with exposed beams, stone flooring, a feature fireplace, pale pink rendered walls and doors that open on to the landscaped courtyard. The Milling Barn also boasts exposed beams along with a wooden floor and doors that open on to a small courtyard. Both barns have underfloor heating produced from the biomass system on the farm creating a warm, cosy feel during the winter months. The pretty courtyard opens on to a patio area perfect for a summer

drinks reception with steps leading up to a grassy area revealing a firepit, also ideal for al fresco celebrations. At night, the courtyard and garden are lit with romantic festoon lighting. Ceremonies take place in the Milling Barn for up to 90 guests or in the Main Barn for up to 120 loved ones while the Courtyard and The Wed Shed both hold up to 120 people. HATCH HOUSE, TISBURY Hatch House is a family home located in a private setting accessed via a set of armorial gates and a tree-lined avenue. The house was transformed in the early 20th century by the architect Detmar Blow and the stone exterior blends into the setting while the theatrical façade commands views of the picturesque gardens and nods to the vibrant, eclectic interior that maintains the warmth and feel of a family home. Ceremonies can be held in a choice of three areas. The dining room decorated in vibrant yellow with views of the garden on two sides is a small intimate space seating up to 45 guests. Alternatively, the porch situated at the back of the house that overlooks the gardens is another ceremony option and the pavilion that takes centre stage in the heart of the two-tiered, 17th-century walled Dutch garden is an al fresco space. The pavilion enjoys wisteria in bloom during late spring and the garden aisle leads from the house through the ornate garden gate to the pavilion. Receptions take place in the gardens enjoying panoramic views stretching across to the Vale of Wardour. Well-tended borders provide plenty of colour throughout the spring and summer months and the central lawn of the walled garden provides ample space for a marquee. There are smaller garden rooms that can also be utilised, either for extra space or for more intimate celebrations and one of them is large enough for a smaller marquee.

PYTHOUSE CLUB, TISBURY This reception-only wedding venue sits in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside. The clubhouse faces open countryside and offers ample space for a marquee reception on the manicured grounds. The design of Pythouse Club was inspired by a simple basilica. The Regency sash windows are framed by handmade green wooden shutters, the Clubhouse is clad with Douglas Fir and the roof is tiled with reclaimed Welsh slate. A wide veranda looks out over the stunning green landscape that offers plenty of shade and seating. The veranda can be turned in to a fabulous entrance decorated with flowers, bunting and fairylights and it can also provide extra reception space before the wedding breakfast. Inside, the Clubhouse features a fine wood floor and is filled with plenty of natural daylight. There’s a kitchen located in the main club room and the remaining space can be turned into a cosy dining room, ideal for a pre-wedding dinner, or used as the main reception room. This venue is available for receptions only but the Club is fully licensed to serve alcohol. Receptions take place in a marquee erected on the grounds for up to 100 guests, or in The Clubhouse for up to 36 loved ones seated and up to 50 people standing. Ceremony licence? This historic venue offers exclusivity within the walls of Cathedral Close in Salisbury. Fronting on to Choristers Square, the house dates back to the 13th century with many additions and alterations. To the rear, there’s a mature walled garden, known as the secret garden, a hidden gem in the heart of this Cathedral city where exclusive marquee weddings can be held. It’s fully enclosed and covers more than half an acre leading down to the banks of the River Avon. The pretty flowerbeds and blooming rose garden make it an ideal photographic backdrop. Small wedding receptions take place in the historic regimental room suitably placed to admire the views of the Cathedral spire, with larger celebrations enjoying the marquee outside in the secret garden. Access is granted the day before, and after, the wedding included in the cost. There’s also an experienced wedding and event planner on hand, plus a complimentary tasting of the wedding breakfast menu and a discounted lunch the day after the celebration included in the price.

WARDROBE WALLED GARDEN WEDDINGS

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.

A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.

The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.

The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day.

The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire.

An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!

The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.

mily and Ben met on a night out 10 years ago. “We were instantly attracted to each other and went on a date the following week,” Emily tells us. “We became engaged in December 2019 during a romantic winter proposal in Switzerland. We stayed in Geneva and had arranged to go on a bus tour for a day to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in France to explore the snow up in the mountains but almost didn’t make it because there was a high risk of an avalanche that day. It was magical and a wonderful surprise when Ben asked me to marry him against the scenic snowy backdrop.”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple chose to get married at Elmore Court in Gloucestershire. “From the moment we visited, we both knew it was the venue for us,” Emily says. “It offered an exclusive-use, private location and the house is so grand and beautiful. We loved the ceremony room with the option to have the fires lit. The Gillyflower event space, that’s purpose-built for celebrations, really wowed our guests.” The couple chose magnificent flower displays filled with white varieties mixed with plenty of foliage. “We wanted the rooms to feel like there had been a flower explosion!” Emily tells us.

“I booked a surprise VW Campervan to collect the groomsmen from their location and drive them to Elmore Court.” - Emily

“We chose aisle meadows and a flower-filled arch for the ceremony room that were transferred to the Gillyflower after the ceremony which was important to us to be sustainable and re-use them. We filled small glass bottles and vases with white blooms and foliage for our centrepieces and displayed these with plenty of candles and mini white pumpkins. Our table plan was hand-written on pumpkins by our wedding stylist, Lauradana. The names were based on our favourite films and television shows, including The Addams Family, and she presented the pumpkins in crates which looked fantastic. Our place names were beautifully written on mini white pumpkins that looked so cute - most of our guests took them home.” Emily and Ben also had a flower wall placed against a neon sign which read ‘til death do us party’ and a wooden guest board for everyone to write on instead of a traditional guest book. Emily’s dad owns a local bakery so the choice of cake was important to the couple. “We wanted a wow-factor design so chose a five-tier green and white marble cake decorated with mini white pumpkins, flowers and foliage. It stood on a cake swing surrounded by a 7ft balloon hoop which amazed our guests. My dad didn’t make it because he said it was too much pressure but we did convince him to create our heart-shaped green iced shortbread biscuit favours with Mr and Mrs stamped on them in gold.” To entertain their guests, the couple had a string quartet performing during the ceremony and drinks reception. “My Dad surprised us with singing waiters just after the dessert!” Emily says. “This was the best part of the day, they got everyone up dancing and brought the party come to life! We were all doing the conga around the room before 7 pm, it was fabulous!” For their evening food, the couple hired a pizza truck and had a hog roast and they rounded off the night with a surprise firework display for everyone.

LOOKING THE PART Emily wore a satin dress by Justin Alexander accessorised with a veil while Ben and his groomsmen chose dark-grey three-piece suits teamed with dark green ties. “Our bridesmaids coordinated by wearing dark-green gowns,” Emily says.

emma and Matt met at a mutual friend’s wedding. “I lived in London and Matt lived in Yorkshire so our early days of dating were enjoyed long-distance,” Gemma tells us. “Our first date ended up being at a Wigan football match because we both loved sport. I questioned our mutual friend about why he hadn’t thought to set us up sooner, and he said ‘because I never thought you’d leave London and I didn’t think that Matt would leave Halifax!’” Matt proposed at Dormy House in the Cotswolds during a surprise weekend away. “It was an early Christmas present because we were going to Australia to visit Matt’s sister for Christmas,” Gemma tells us. “He popped the question in our private hot tub in our hotel room. We started talking about what our wedding might be like, and, because we became engaged in the Cotswolds, the search for the perfect Cotswolds venue began.” Here, Gemma tells us all about their special day with a Wed of the Roses rustic-inspired theme.

Norton Grounds only has a limited number of weddings that take place there every year and couples get the place for the entire weekend. Once we had decided on our Wed of the Rose s theme, we chose a mix of red and white roses to showcase the flowers of our home counties, as well as dusky pink varieties to represent the blending of the two colours and our marriage.

Because we were getting mar ried in a rustic location, we wanted plenty of natural foli age, eucalyptus and relaxed flowers to suit the feel of the venue. We had given them a table plan and highlighted the names of guests who we thought would be keen to participate…and they didn’t disappoint! The singer, Chloe, duetted with some of our friends and the trio roamed the tables encouraging everyone to stop what they were eating and dance! It was the highlight of the day for us both to see everyone having so much fun.

We didn’t want a traditional wedding cake, we added a norther n twist by hav ing two layers of pork pies - a nod to my home tow n of Wigan! We still did the traditional cutting of the cake but it was into a layer of pork pie! We also had a sweetie ladder that ever yone loved.

Our best man Dan arranged video messages from Matt’s sister and family and some other friends of ours in Australia who couldn’t be with us on the day. There were tears – but it was wonderful that they could play a part.

“Our wedding coordinator, Anna worked tirelessly right until the end making sure all the details on the day were perfect. Andrew, the owner of Norton Grounds, cooked us breakfast each morning and ensured the grass was cut to precision in the hours leading up to our guests arriving.” - Gemma and Matt

The canapés included ingredients from Lanc and Yorkshire!

Sadly, our original caterer wen t into administration a few months before the wedding but we ended up getting exactly what we wanted from Paisley Flour who matched the original menu idea and their presentation complemented our theme and the venue beautifully . So many guests commented on the amazing food - especial ly the slow-cooked beef brisket with pasta.

I tried on about 50 wedding dresses before making my deci sion! I wanted something floaty and boho but found tha t these styles didn’t suit me. I was encouraged to try on something more fitted and Sally at Helena Fortley boutiqu e made me realise that even though a dress might not be perfect when you first try it on, it can be customised. I chose the style call ed Nini by Enzoani because I loved the very flattering lace detail, and the scalloped detail on the train.

“After our wedding, we were grateful for the video. Our photographer and videographer, Kate and Jon Gray, a husband and wife duo, ensured our memories will last a lifetime. Our video was set fast-paced to music, and we’ll never tire of watching it. The night it arrived in our email inbox we watched it on repeat and thought it was money well spent.” - Gemma and Matt

I had my dress customised including adding more lace detail to the back, Bardot-inspired sleeves and the seamstress at Helena Fortley made me a custom-made cape rather than a veil - whic h I loved! The finger loops on the cape made for some excellent photos and not having a veil meant I could add roses to my hair which matched our them e.

denim My favourite accessory was a personalised I also that back jacket with Mrs Rushworth on the wore in the evening.

I wore a pair of block heel sho es by the designer Freya Rose which were comfortable but I changed into a pair of personalised trainers with my new mar ried name and weddin g date on in the evening.

My bridesmaids loved their matching robes to wear while they were getting ready!

“The Lazy Pig created a paella station for a bridal party welcome dinner the night before the wedding, pizza for the evening reception and a delicious barbecue to help the hangovers the following day! We were so pleased that we had a wedding weekend because the day goes by so quickly.” - Gemma and Matt

so he Matt had a custom-made jacket and waistcoat many was able to choose the details including how r the lining pockets and buttons he had and what colou ired and was. He wanted to wear something rustic-insp rest chose the same tie, trousers and shirt as the of the groomsmen.

The male bridal party had sim ilar jackets and waistcoats to Matt’s in a brig ht blue check. We have seen them wear them again at even ts since the wedding so we think they were a hit! They each wore a red or white rose buttonhole to indicate which side of the Pennines they came from!

We had garden games set up on the lawns including limbo, skittles and croquet.

Entertainment was important to us and because we got mar ried just over a month afte r the pandemic restrictions had lifted so we wanted to mak e sure that ever yone had an amazing time. We hired a magician to entertain our guests during our al fresco drin ks reception who was such a hit!

Our favourite images of the day came at sunset - we had some amazing couple shots taken in the fields of the farm.

THE DREAM TEAM

I wanted our bridesmaids to love what they were wearing so I decided that they would all wear different dresses because it’s hard to find a style that suits five women. We chose pink and gold styles decorated with sequins.

During the evening, we had a live band called and Truly Medley Deeply who perform medleys sounded fantastic!

It was our group shots with our bridal party against colourful smoke bombs that will be a memory of the day for years to come.

PHOTOGRAPHY I am a professional photographer based in Salisbury and cover the South of England. I capture natural but refined moments in a relaxed and stylish way. I love emotive, natural photography and want to give you something a little bit more. I was always the friend or family member with the camera that everyone relied on to document parties and outings. Day to day I am an Occupational Therapist in a busy acute hospital, helping the elderly get back home and participate in what is meaningful to them. I feel so incredibly lucky to have found something else, at the other end of the spectrum, which allows me to get creative and express myself in a completely different way.

Double THE fun

Couples planning a Christmas wedding later this year can take inspiration from Victoria and Oli’s winter wedding ceremony followed by a summer reception Images of the ceremony courtesy of Charlotte Darlington Photography Images of the reception courtesy of Nikki Kirk Photography

Victoria Louise Walker and Oliver John Potter (known as Oli) married on 20th December 2020 at Dumbleton Hall Hotel The Cotswolds followed by a summer wedding reception on 28th August 2021 at Stoke Orchard Community Centre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. 38

V

ictoria and Oli met online in 2011. “For our first date, we had arranged to meet at Costa Coffee in Cheltenham but Oli was 20 minutes late and I had accidentally left my phone at home so he couldn’t contact me to tell me that he was running late!” Victoria says. “After 15 minutes of waiting outside and wondering if I was waiting at the right place, I almost gave up thinking I had been stood up! Thankfully, I waited a little longer and we hit it off straight away!” Victoria tells us how the couple booked the venue, purchased the ring and then got engaged. “I had been hinting about getting married for a couple of years and Oli finally came round to the idea of

REAL WEDDINGS having a small wedding (but little did we know that it would be very small due to the Covid restrictions in place at the time.) We visited a couple of wedding fairs and viewed some venues including Dumbleton Hall Hotel The Cotswolds. After having a chat with Sarah there, we booked the venue for December 20th 2020.” The couple then purchased a ring and months later, as they were getting ready to head out for their anniversary meal, Oli presented it to Victoria and asked her to marry him.

SETTING THE SCENE The main reason that Victoria and Oli chose Dumbleton Hall Hotel The Cotswolds was that

“People often find it hard to tell Oli and his twin brother James apart. On our wedding day, James popped up to the room where I was getting ready and my mum answered the door and thought it was Oli, telling him that he wasn’t allowed to be there because it was bad luck! James had to quickly explain that he wasn’t Oli!” - Victoria

it was important to them that their cockapoo, Tilly, was part of their special day. “We only looked at dog-friendly venues,” Victoria tells us. “This hotel is a beautiful manor house set in stunning grounds and I knew that it would look festive in December decorated with a Christmas tree.” The couple’s wedding day ended up taking place during the lockdown so their guest list was reduced from 200 people to 30, and then down to an intimate 14 loved ones (including Tilly.) “Our plans had to change a lot, even up to one week before!” Victoria explains. “We had to share our ceremony with some friends and family via Zoom and decided to have a reception the following summer in the hope that the restrictions would be lifted. This did mean that I got to wear my dress twice!” The couple worked with two different photographers to capture their celebrations. Charlotte Darlington photographed the winter ceremony and Nikki Kirk, who trained Charlotte and who Charlotte is a second shooter for, photographed the summer reception. “Our pictures were stunning and we had some taken outside close to our home by Nikki,” Victoria explains. Sadly, Victoria’s wonderful dad passed away in 2018 so her mum gave her away. “Mum was amazing,” Victoria tells us, and we made sure that my Dad was still part of the day. I had a small framed photograph of him attached to my bouquet with ‘Dad, walk with me today and always’ written on the back. Tilly was our ring-bearer and wore a white harness decorated with flowers matching those in my bouquet. Our rings were secured to her harness with a gold padlock inscribed with the name of the venue and date. Our guests were given extra keys for the padlock (just in case!) and dog treats Tilly was excited to see us so it took a while to catch her and get the rings off her harness!”

REAL WEDDINGS

SETTING THE SCENE Victoria made lots of the decorations herself using lanterns, hurricane lamps, tartan ribbon and festive foliage. “Our favours were glass Christmas baubles engraved with our wedding date handmade by our friend Trish,” Victoria explains. “ Another friend, Julie designed our mouth-watering cake and I assembled crackers containing personalised gifts that doubled up as place settings. We also had beautiful table decorations displayed alongside candles that were created by our fantastic florist, Alex. I made my bouquet using sunflowers and gypsophila and our confetti was rose petals from my mum and dad’s garden.” The couple decorated the hall themselves, with fairylights suspended from the ceiling, sunflowers, balloons and lanterns and had a sweet table and sparklers that were popular with their guests. “We also had personalised champagne glasses made for everyone and a gilt mirror featuring the names, wedding date and the lyrics to Can’t Help Falling in Love that was made by our friend Lorna,” Victoria tells us.

“Everyone tucked into a delicious hog roast!” - Victoria and Oli

LOOKING THE PART Victoria’s dress was an off-the-shoulder lace ballgown featuring a glitter tulle underlay skirt with lace detail at the bottom. “It was by the designer Rachel Allan from Taffeta & Lace in Gloucester,” she tells us. “I teamed it with my own white faux-fur bolero, a simple diamond necklace, a pair of stud earrings and a beautiful diamond bracelet with a heart on that my dad had chosen before he passed away,” Victoria tells us. “Mum presented me with this the day before the wedding which was an extremely special and emotional moment.” Oli, his twin brother James and their dad wore dark-blue suits teamed with grey waistcoats and burgundy ties. “Oli had a burgundy rose buttonhole with small pine cones and other tiny festive flowers in it for the ceremony,” Victoria explains. “On the day of our summer reception, his buttonhole was a small sunflower with gypsophila.” The couple’s bridesmaids, Debbie and Claire, wore burgundy off-the-shoulder dresses with pleated maxilength skirts while their flowergirl, Niamh wore a cute ivory dress with a chiffon skirt, burgundy ribbon and matching bolero. “Sadly, our third bridesmaid who was my niece Alix was unable to attend our wedding due to the restrictions in place at the time,” Victoria explains. 41

TIME TO ENTERTAIN The couple were able to have everything at their summer wedding reception that they couldn’t have on the day of the ceremony. “We hired the band Coco Magic who was fantastic and kept everyone up and dancing all night,” Victoria tells us. “We also had a magic mirror and illuminated LOVE letters plus a snow machine that I had arranged for after the ceremony and during the family photographs. This was a surprise for everyone and we got some amazing photographs!”

VENUE STYLING

DRESS YOUR DAY YOUR WAY Venue styling ideas and inspiration

FABULOUS FLOWERS Floral towers and columns are becoming increasingly popular with couples looking for a versatile alternative to a floral arch. These designs can be placed at the entrance to the venue or as a backdrop for the ceremony. Unlike a flora-filled archway, these arrangements can be moved to the wedding reception, after the ceremony, to create a focal point or frame the top table. Flower meadows are great design options for the aisle either in a church or ceremony venue. These floor-based designs can be created in a range of styles, from natural wildflower-inspired shapes to more classic and elegant looks. After the ceremony, these blooms look beautiful placed on the floor in front of the top table or around the cake and card tables. Claire Satchell, owner of The Derry Hill Florist based in Calne, Wiltshire reveals that trailing bouquets are becoming increasingly popular. She says, “Brides have long favoured hand-tied bouquets which are usually cheaper to make because they contain fewer flowers than larger bouquets. They have been more in keeping with the dress styles of the late 1990s and 2000s and the look evolved from formal, regimented bouquets to those featuring folded leaves and then to the natural just-picked look. Over the past year, I have seen an increase in brides requesting elaborate teardrop and shower bouquets that cost more (because they involve more work) and are heavier to carry.” Claire also explains how eco florals are now a priority for many couples. “I’m hoping to be able to offer 100% carbon neutral flowers for events where couples could see what could be picked for their nuptials.” She continues, “Using an English cutting garden project is a wonderful idea for those searching for home-grown seasonal blooms, the quality is excellent and you’re safe in the knowledge that your flowers haven’t been on a plane or forced to grow at the wrong time of year. I have my cutting patch which I offer to brides, I don’t attempt to grow everything, my garden isn’t big enough and sometimes things just don’t grow. I also have a trusted wholesaler, which I’ve been using for more than 25 years - they’re superb and I know I will get everything I need.” ❤ GET IN TOUCH: 07968 091 217, https://thederryhillflorist.com; www.facebook.com/thederryhillflorist Hannah Bendall offers a wedding planning and venue dressing service and can build a bespoke package for each couple, from flowers to favours and for celebrations large or small. She tells us, “Large colourful flower installations are making a very noted comeback as everyone starts to embrace being in large groups again. The relaxed country wedding vibe is here to stay, with couples favouring barns village halls, old country houses and even woodland areas that lend themselves to stunning backdrops.” She continues, “Modern touches include a concrete pot filled with blooms, a simple glass vase or the on-trend meadow box that provides a structure for wayward flowers that more often than not will be arranged using chicken wire instead of the traditional oasis which isn’t good for the environment. With the cost of living rising dramatically, a good venue dresser or florist will be able to produce something special that can be utilised throughout the day in different areas. For example, jam jars filled with flowers can be moved from the church to the venue or jars placed inside large receptacles giving the illusion of larger displays can be adapted as table centrepieces. Urns can be moved from church doorways and placed next to marquee entrances and jars of flowers can be given as presents at the end of the day. We have British flower farmers at our disposal and we’re branching out into flower farming ourselves, enjoying our second season with Common Wood Flowers (www.facebook.com/Common-Wood-Flowers-100556778954401) providing seasonal blooms that pack a fabulously scented explosion. AN OLD CLASSIC

Photography of Kushi Cars courtesy of www.marcuscharterphotography.co.uk and https://samdocker.co

When Victoria and David Beckham recently gifted their son Brooklyn with a 1954 vintage Jaguar XK140 as a recent wedding gift, it put classic cars back in the spotlight. They offer a timeless choice for weddings and with so much variety, there’s a vehicle available to suit every couple’s style Want to arrive at your wedding in one of the quirkiest cars available to hire in the Cotswolds? This pretty 1950s vintage Indian Ambassador car from Kushi Cars (Kushi meaning happiness in Hindi) is reminiscent of a Morris Minor on the outside. The bumper can be decorated with flowers to suit the theme of each wedding with a popular option being green foliage including eucalyptus. The interior is draped in rich red and gold fabrics providing an Insta-worthy photo opportunity and the vehicle can travel to weddings throughout the Cotswolds (it’s based in Cheltenham) and further afield on request. SUITED AND BOOTED

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

58

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated. We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package. I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing my dress alternations, hair and make-up trial and last-minute planning.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. My parents have been together for more than 30 years, but never married. I always hated having a different last name to my mum; so it might sound silly, but I like the idea of our family having one name and I’m really looking forward to sharing that with him (also Twilight is secretly one of my guility pleasures – so the 15-year-old in me is excited to be taking on the Cullen name). In this issue, read all about Dave trying to find the perfect suit and our search for a last-minute videographer.

BRIDE’S DIARY Here are our top tips that we’ve learned during wedding planning:

VENUE

CATERING

❤ Check if you’re allowed confetti. We’re only allowed real petals, and bio-degradable versions aren’t an option. ❤ Find out if you can have sparklers as some venues don’t allow them. ❤ Check whether there are any local taxi companies in the area. If so, pass along the details to your guests.

❤ Ask your supplier if cutlery and linen are included in your quote. ❤ Make sure your supplier caters for all dietary requirements. ❤ Before booking, find out how many options you get to pick for each course.

PHOTOGRAPHER

JEWELLERY

❤ Talk to your photographer about visiting the property before the wedding. We’re planning to meet ours at the venue so he can see where the best photograph opportunities are. ❤ Find out how long your online gallery will be active for. ❤ If you’re feeling anxious near the wedding, get in touch with your photographer. They’ll be able to talk through the day with you to help calm your nerves.

❤ Think about the details on your dress before buying your jewellery. If your gown is heavily beaded, it might be worth choosing simple, understated options. ❤ It can be overwhelming trying to decide what to wear. Talk through options with your wedding party to see what other people suggest. ❤ Pick out key elements of your dress and see if you can complement them with your jewellery.

ALTERNATIONS

CAKE

❤ Before booking your alternations, it’s worth shopping around. I sent ❤ Work out how many guests you’re going to be having and tell your a picture of my dress to five different companies and explained what I cake maker. They will be able to advise how many tiers you need to wanted done, and made my decision based on their quotes. accommodate everyone. ❤ Depending on how intricate your dress is, alterations can take ❤ A lot of cake will be leftover at the end of the night, so purchase cake anywhere from two to eight weeks, so make sure you book your boxes so your guests can take a slice home. appointment early. ❤ Order a sample box so you can try different flavours before making ❤ If you’re nervous about your first fitting, ask one of your bridal party to your final decision. go with you. 59

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Our experts answer your big-day questions

STEP OUT IN STYLE

We’re planning our wedding and want to do something for charity, any ideas? Meet the experts: Cameron Ross Formal Hire is available nationwide with stockists in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire including Chaplins Formal Suit & Kilt Hire in Swindon (https://chaplinsmenswear.co.uk) Grooms and wedding guests looking to do a good deed can hire a bespoke suit package, with proceeds going towards the country’s leading end of life charity. The Marie Curie Blue Slim Fit Package is based on two core principles – a great fit and cutting-edge contemporary fashion. The outfit comprises a blue slim-fit jacket and waistcoat, a pair of blue slim-fit flat-fronted trousers, a shirt, a pair of cufflinks and a lemon-coloured tie and handkerchief – the charity’s corporate colours. It’s available in adult and child sizes and available to buy online and through more than 250 Cameron Ross Formal Hire stockists across the UK. With prices starting at £110, £5 of each hire will go to Marie Curie, which provides care and support to terminally ill people and their families across the UK. Georgina Bushell, partnerships manager at Marie Curie tells us, “Now that we’re learning to live with Covid, many people are getting married this year, or next, and looking forward to tying the knot. We’re so grateful to be receiving a portion of the suit hire. Not only is it a beautiful choice, but for guests who are hiring it, they’re helping Marie Curie to continue being there for terminally ill people and their loved ones throughout the country.” Michael Fallon, business development manager at ACS Clothing, who owns the Cameron Ross Formal Hire brand, says, “Marie Curie is an incredible charity that supports so many families in their time of need and I am delighted that we can support them in our own way. Offering our customers a way to donate to a worthy cause by wearing one of our most popular suits is the next logical step in our partnership. At ACS, we are seeing an increase in suit hire bookings and are proud to be able to offer a donation from every Marie Curie Blue Slim Fit Package. This partnership allows our customers to support Marie Curie by hiring the package online or through any of our partner stockists throughout the UK. I’m newly engaged and about to start wedding dress shopping – what styles are trending? Meet the expert: Christine Kilsby is the director of The Cotswold Frock Shop, a bridal boutique specialising in wedding dresses, bridesmaids’ gowns and outfits for mothers based in Stowon-the-Wold, Gloucestershire. Christine says: Sleeves are back, with many of our brides requesting dresses with sleeves to try on at their fittings. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

Meet the expert: Ben Allen is the talent behind Lenscraft Photography capturing weddings in Gloucestershire, Bristol and Bath. Can you give us some tips for booking our big-day photography? Ben says: Searching for the right wedding photographer can be a bit of a minefield. If you’re reading this, you may have already posted in Facebook bridal groups asking for recommendations, and have no doubt been flooded by countless photographers telling you why you should book them (probably including me!) The right photographer for you is out there... Whether your main deciding factor is the price, style of photography or personality, take a look at your potential list of photographers’ Instagram feeds and delete any whose work you aren’t a fan of. This will leave you with a list of those whose work you love. Once you’ve got a shortlist, look at their pricing and remove any that fall above or under your budget. Now comes the most important bit - meet the photographers on your shortlist! If you can’t meet in person, set up a Zoom call. You must get on well with your chosen photographer because they’re going to be

It’s a premium pony event and party service where Shetland ponies Frankie and Freddie are available to book for interactive experiences all year round. They are transported to each wedding and can be fed, stroked, groomed, and even dressed up! Scott says: We would like to announce the arrival of our pedigree miniature Shetland ponies Frankie and Freddie who are ready to arrive suited and booted as special guests at your wedding! They are miniature ponies who look very cute, their white coats make heads turn, whether for entertaining children or as the star of the show in the photographs - we’re taking bookings now. I actually said ‘oh my gosh look at my hair!’ as I swished it like I was in a TV advert, and the coconut scent is divine! Tip: you really do have to ‘thoroughly’ massage it into your hair and scalp as directed to get it to lather up.” – Danielle Harvey

EXPERT ADVICE

Q&A Our experts reveal all about celebrity-inspired hair and make-up

Meet the expert: Kelly Craven-Salvatelli is the owner of award-winning Sienna Taye Hairdressing, a salon based in the heart of Salisbury named after her daughter. Awards include Stylist of the Year 2019, Best Local Hair Salon (Southwest) 2019 and Best Hair Salon Overall Winner of the Year 2019 at the English Hair & Beauty Awards. Kelly says: Bridal hair styling is about enhancing the everyday version of yourself with a helping creative hand. A Brigitte Bardot-inspired half up do is a classic style that can be easily altered into a second look by fastening hair into a ponytail at the crown or back of the neck, perfect for the evening party. Adding a cream ribbon, like Nicola Peltz Beckham did the morning after her big day, keeps it on-trend. Nicola also had the front of her hair shaped into bangs which are a

great way to enhance your cheekbones. To achieve this look, spritz clean wet hair with light-hold sculpting fluid Flux Potion by Oway (https://oway.com) and blast dry it using a large round brush, lifting hair at the roots for volume. You can also use a large tong and pin hair into place until it has cooled down. Next, apply a product to enhance texture at the crown, I recommend Oway’s botanical Plant & Mineral Refresh, and backcomb hair to add height, while also smoothing it. Using a criss-cross overlapping technique, secure hair with grips, wavy side to the scalp. Tease or twist any hair back at the sides leaving tousled pieces down. Leaving the half up do in position, use a bristle brush to tame the lengths and secure at the low nape with a hair bungee (an elastic that grips either end for a tight hold.) Gently pinch and pull separate strands around the base of the ponytail to create a softer finish. Finally, hide the bungee using a ribbon or wrap a piece of hair around, fixing it underneath. Spritz to hold the style in place with Sculpting Mist by Oway.

How can I achieve the effortless hairstyle of Brooklyn Beckham’s new wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham?

How can I achieve wedding make-up like Brooklyn Beckham’s new wife? Meet the expert: Teresa Jolly is a qualified freelance make-up artist working throughout Wilshire and neighbouring counties. She’s also a professionally trained Airbase Airbrush make-up artist. Teresa says: When Nicola Peltz recently married Brooklyn Beckham, looking stunning in a custom-made Valentino Couture wedding dress, her hair and make-up were said to be heavily influenced by the ‘90s supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Her on-trend make-up choice is one that most of my brides are asking for - a fresh, natural and barely-there look, with a focus on glowing, radiant skin. To achieve glowing skin and enhance your natural beauty, use Strobe Cream by MAC or Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter applied after moisturiser. For foundation, choose a light-reflecting formula such as the new Light Reflecting Foundation by NARS. For your eyes, keep a soft neutral lid, highlighting the inner eye with a diffused black liner at the lash line and a soft dark brown on the waterline. For lashes, try a soft fluffy strip lash or individual lashes. To add shape and dimension to your face, create a light contour with a make-up bronzer and then apply blusher from the apple of the cheeks sweeping up towards the hairline. Treat your lips to a neutral pink semi-matte lip product like Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk to finish this look.

SOUTH AFRICA

Mantis, a conservation-focused hospitality group with luxury properties located across the globe, has announced the opening of the Founders Railway Carriage at Mantis Founders Lodge in South Africa. Originally built in the 1970s, the carriage is permanently stationed at the top of a hill within Mantis’ private concession. Ideal for honeymoons, the railway carriage features indoor and outdoor dining, lounge areas, and an expansive deck with a private swimming pool. The newly-built Honeymoon Pod was designed to be an escape for couples. Perched above the central lodge, the suite offers unobstructed views of the valley. Romantic services can be arranged including intimate dinners for two and picnics overlooking the waterhole with amazing game drives to view the big five. The railway carriage belongs to conservation pioneer and Mantis founder and chairman, Adrian Gardiner, who tells us: “In 1990 I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to buy a train carriage which I converted into a first-class coach, and I managed to come to an agreement with the railways which enabled me to attach the carriage to the regular passenger services. It has long been my dream to bring the carriage to its very own station. Now others can enjoy it and create their very own personalised holiday adventures for generations to come while experiencing the excitement of sleeping on board a railway carriage.” To find out more, visit www.mantiscollection.com

A romantic escape Travel editor Melissa Barker reveals why Mauritius is the perfect honeymoon destination

A

fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation to recover from the stress of wedding planning or an action-packed adventure, Beachcomber has a resort to suit. With eight properties in Mauritius, each offering something different, the team can tailor-make your holiday across a range of price points. I was lucky enough to visit four of the luxurious hotels during my stay and it was certainly a trip to remember! For those of you who don’t know much about Mauritius, it’s located in the Indian Ocean and is brimming with culture and Instagram-worthy snaps at every turn. Roughly an 11-hour flight from the UK with Air Mauritius, it’s famous for its picturesque beaches, breathtaking lagoons and crystal-clear reefs. The spoken language is English and Mauritian Creole, so you won’t need to worry about translations, and it’s the only known habitat for the now-extinct dodo bird. VICTORIA BEACHCOMBER RESORT & SPA The four-star Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa is situated on the North West coast and is conveniently located between the tourist hub of Grand Baie and the capital city of Port Louis. The sea-facing rooms offer the perfect space to begin your stay in style, with king-sized beds, balconies, walk-in showers, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and luxurious baths. Those who want to celebrate married life in privacy can book into the adult-only ‘Victoria for 2’ section. Tranquil and romantic, this area is ideal for those who want to relax in each other’s company while enjoying the on-site amenities.

With access to Mont Choisy Le Golf, an 18-hole golf course located 10 minutes away from the resort, a host of water sports, pools and five restaurants, there’s plenty to see and do during your time here. TROU AUX BICHES BEACHCOMBER The five-star Trou aux Biches Beachcomber is situated on the coast with nearly two kilometres of white sandy beaches and a turquoise lagoon. The villas and beachfront suites have private pools that are built in crescents to create a village-like feel. The villas open out onto large pools, which look glorious first thing in the morning, and the outdoor showers are pure bliss! The resort has large pools in each of the main areas, and with the sea only ever a few minutes away, it’s easy to feel relaxed and stressfree here. With an emphasis on environmental preservation, all the Beachcomber properties are eco-friendly and use environmentally-friendly bottles, reuse water and some have on-site beehives to produce honey. DINAROBIN BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA AND PARADIS BEACHCOMBER GOLF RESORT & SPA Dinarobin Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa is a gem for those wanting to get away from it all. This five-star hotel is in the South-West part of the island and shares facilities with Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa. Offering access to the 18-hole par 72 golf course, water sports and eight inviting restaurants (four at each hotel), there is a wide range of accommodation to choose from, and some even come with a private chef and a golf buggy so you can travel around in style. The spectacular views of Le Morne mountain are Insta-worthy, and the luscious greenery will make you feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – perfect for your post-wedding bubble! a shuttle service that runs between the two resorts, which is great fun and gives you the freedom to explore without worrying. WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum. This tipple is used in several drinks and traditional dishes on the island. One of the most popular is Ti Punch, a rum cocktail that has a real kick to it, especially if you’re a lightweight like me! The Beachcomber properties have a range of restaurants, each serving different cuisines. Nautil Café at Victoria Beachcomber Resort & Spa has a large lunch menu accomodating even the fussiest of eaters, while Trou aux Biches Beachcomber has six restaurants offering different cuisines from Asia to Mediterranean. At the Mahiya restaurant, you’ll have the opportunity to wear traditional Indian clothes and watch the chef work through the glass window before tasting the delicious Indian cuisine. Finally, Paradis Beachcomber has an incredible seafood restaurant called Marlin. With options to suit all dietary requirements, the staff will go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need, and the food is amazing – I’m still thinking about the iced nougat weeks later, delish! EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process. The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop. If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa

REST AND RELAXATION The spas at the Beachcomber properties are superb and offer treatments ideal for post-vows R&R. The signature massage includes a sugarcane scrub, which helps remove any dead cells and leaves your skin feeling soft and like new. You can do this together before enjoying a back, leg and neck massage. One of the stand out things that Beachcomber offer is yoga by the beach. A great way to relax and rejuvenate, the teachers are very knowledgeable and will show you breathing techniques and stretches to help with your day-to-day lives when you finally return home. FUN IN THE SUN The activities available across the Beachcomber properties are ideal for those who want to learn a skill or try something new. The expert team will be able to accommodate all abilities and help you try water skiing, windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, pedal boats, tennis or wakeboarding. As part of the honeymoon package, you’ll receive champagne or sparkling wine in your room and a choice of one Beachcomber experience, such as a massage, a boat cruise, wine tasting, a cooking class, horseback riding or an introduction to scuba diving. I’d recommend the sunset boat cruise, where you enjoy a glass of bubbly while taking in the coastal sights at the most beautiful and romantic time of day. HONEYMOON BLISS If you’re looking for an adventure, a relaxing beach stay or a familymoon, Mauritius is the perfect destination. There’s plenty to see and do around the island, and the Beachcomber resorts will leave you feeling like royalty. I truly loved my time in Mauritius, so much so I don’t think my hubby-to-be will need much convincing to consider our own honeymoon there! Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

E

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed. Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours. CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone. We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous. Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored. Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods. The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat. Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops. Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
