Happy 90th birthday to us W

elcome to this landmark edition of Your Hampshire & Dorset Wedding! We’re 90 issues young and despite all the challenges of the past nearly two years, we’re here raising a glass to our special anniversary and all the weddings to come. It’s been tough for everyone, but throughout the restrictions and uncertainty, one of the many shining lights has been the resilience of the wedding industry and couples patiently waiting for their big day. Many had to cancel their weddings last year, some multiple times, before finally being able to tie the knot once lockdowns eased. Suppliers have rallied to provide support, pulling out all the stops to help people reschedule and adapt their plans. This issue we’re lucky enough to be able share a tiny snapshot of just some of the weddings that have taken place in the region – proof, if proof were needed, that love wins no matter what! With the Christmas and New Year proposal season adding to demand, we’re looking forward to bringing you lots more lovely local weddings to inspire and excite you in the months ahead. For those starting out 2022 with a sparkly new ring on their finger, firstly congratulations from your new best friend! We’ll be here throughout your journey with all the latest wedding trends, bridal fashion and beauty insight, local venues, suppliers and wedding news from your doorstep. NEW VENUE ALERT!

Images Nick de Rothschild

If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary for your wedding celebration, check out Palais des Vaches, a new, arty venue set in the heart of the New Forest. Nestled between the Beaulieu River and The Solent, former farm buildings at Lower Exbury have been beautifully renovated to create a unique venue, full of authentic charm. The renovation began in January 2020, when Nick and Caroline de Rothschild started transforming what was once the old milking parlour, fondly known as the ‘Cow Palace’ built a century ago by Nick’s grandfather, along with a derelict Victorian calf shed and run-down concrete yard. Working together with a dedicated team of builders and craftsmen, in July 2021 the Palais des Vaches Gallery and Venue was born. Now a party palace, it provides a chilled relaxed atmosphere in an idyllic rural location with beautiful views and a wealth of opportunities for those allimportant big-day photos. The whole complex is a working art gallery, showing works and sculptures by local Hampshire artists. It can host up to 200 people and boasts a full sound system throughout, a high wooden ceiling and beams in the main gallery, original milking parlour tiles on the walls and ever-changing art on show, depending on the exhibition of the moment. The rest of the buildings surround the large, renovated courtyard, complete with old concrete troughs, brought in from the surrounding fields and repurposed to add to the character and charm. LET IT SNOW ’Tis the season for magical winter weddings

AVINGTON PARK, NR.WINCHESTER 01962 779 260 | www.avingtonpark.co.uk If you’re looking for a historic backdrop for your big day, Avington Park is a must-see. Dating back to the 10th century, be prepared for plenty of stop-stare moments from the moment you arrive through the wrought iron gateway, down the long avenue of lime trees to catch your first glimpse of the house. With two conservatories flanking a pillared orangery, the family home has all the grace and elegance of a wonderful country mansion. Set in peaceful secluded grounds, with lawns bordering the River Itchen, it provides a picturesque scene all year round. Magical in winter with a dusting of snow, there are a host of impressive rooms inside. The beautifully decorated main hall with its marbled pillars and grand fireplace leads into the library, a warm and inviting space with leatherbound books, a log fire, grand piano and views on to the south lawn. The opulent ballroom, on the first floor boasts a magnificently painted ceiling

and gold plasterwork, huge mirrors and stunning views across the park. Full of grandeur it provides a romantic backdrop for ceremonies with up to 100 guests and during December there’s a magical Christmas tree decked with twinkling lights to add to the atmosphere. All three rooms are licensed for ceremonies, as well as the conservatory, a glass house full of exotic plants. Fully heated it’s ideal for intimate ‘I dos’ with up to 25 loved ones. The versatile space can be used in a number of ways, including providing extra room for the reception, the evening bar, for the top table or displaying the wedding cake. Combined with the adjoining library, you can host a reception for 100 seated guests and the room can be turned around later for the evening celebration with entertainment and a band. Larger wedding parties can be hosted in a marquee adjoining the Library.

We love… the magnificent staircase leading up to the ballroom; perfect for beautiful bridal photos.

isa and Darren’s wedding was no ordinary affair and their first meeting was pretty unusual too. “We met several years ago when Darren took part in a naked charity calendar I was photographing for Cancer Research,” recalls Lisa. “We gradually got to know each other over our love for motorbikes and as our friendship grew, so did our feelings.” As the relationship blossomed, thoughts turned to marriage and Darren popped the question at the Dabbling Duck Pub in Great Massingham, Norfolk on Christmas Eve 2019. “We’d already discussed the idea, so it wasn’t really a surprise as such, but that didn’t make it any less magical,” recalls Lisa. They tied the knot on 21st August, 2021 at Radipole Manor in Dorset and opted for a striking black and gold theme. Read on for Lisa’s account of their big day… 29

Rain failed to STOP PLAY

Not even the Great British weather could dampen the joy at Emily and Nathan’s autumn wedding Images courtesy of Steph Newton Photography

REAL WEDDINGS

mutual friend set Emily and Nathan up on a blind date bowling and they proved to be the perfect match! Their competitive nature came out during the game and Nathan was bowled over by Emily’s carefree character. Romance blossomed and when the time came to pop the question, Nathan’s plan was thwarted by bad weather and he ended up asking her to marry him looking out to sea in his hometown in Wales. “As we’re avid walkers I was originally going to propose at the top of the Pen y Fan mountain, however when the sunshine turned to torrential rain, I had to quickly reconsidered my options,” he recalls. Emily was so shocked, that she left Nathan waiting for three minutes before giving him an answer! She said ‘yes’, of course, and they were married exactly 14 months to the day later.

THE TIME AND THE PLACE They set the date for 2nd October, 2021 and opted for a rustic, autumn theme. Gorwell Farm in Abbotsbury provided the perfect setting for their big day. “We wanted to have lots of guests and to hold the ceremony and reception in one place and Gorwell Farm offered all this and more. Nestled in picturesque Dorset countryside, driving down to it and seeing the barn peek out at us was really beautiful,” enthuses Emily. “We had the option to get married outside, which we loved, although due to the Great British weather it didn’t happen, plus there was plenty of space in the barn to seat all our loved ones and party afterwards!” With six holiday cottages available to rent, team bride, the groom’s party and their nearest and dearest were able to stay for the whole weekend too.

LOOKING THE PART When it came to the all-important dress, after trying on a few different styles Emily set her heart on finding something flowing, with lace and subtle detail to show off her back. As soon as she tried on the Rebecca Ingram for Maggie Sottero Beatrice gown, she knew it was the one. “Incredibly talented seamstress Chantelle did the alterations so the dress fitted me perfectly, making me feel great. She made some beautiful adjustments to the delicate lace in the bodice and neckline and was incredibly helpful providing extra fittings to make sure I was happy with the end result. She also provided my beautiful veil,” adds Emily. Nathan looked smart in a Donegal tweed jacket and waistcoat with the groomsmen in matching attire and forest green ties to complement the bridesmaids’ dresses. The wonderful flowers echoed the natural autumn theme beautifully combining bold seasonal shades of red and burnt orange. Emily says, “Our florist Jessie was incredible, we were only able to meet with her a couple of weeks before the wedding due to lockdowns and schedules, but she really brought our ideas to life. She also created a beautiful floral hair comb for me, individual flowers for the bridesmaids’ hair and stunning floral crowns for our three flowergirls.”

ALL IN THE DETAIL Styling their wedding was a team effort involving many wonderful friends and relatives the day before and in the weeks leading up to it. “We completed the full set up and thankfully had some amazing suppliers to help realise our vision,” adds Emily. Personal touches included charity pins in aid of Cancer Research UK in memory of family members they’d lost to the 35 

disease and gold poppy pins commemorating 100 years of the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. “Nathan’s grampy Joe continues to sell poppies in his local community and as Nathan is also ex-military, this appeal holds a special place in his heart,” Emily explains. They had long trestle tables for the wedding breakfast with an assortment of different finds and decorative items they bought or hired for the centrepieces. “We got log slices from a local farmer, foraged for fir cones and family friends decorated recycled jars with lace which our loved ones filled with flowers and foliage from our amazing florist,” adds Emily. The cakes were also a family effort, including Emily’s mum’s famous fruitcake and her aunty’s lemon drizzle and Victoria sponge. The tables were named after mountains and places across the UK that they’d explored. “The table names were laser-cut out of wood and were highly effective and matched our rustic theme beautifully,” recalls Emily. “We also had ladders strung from the roof of the barn with hanging Edison lamp bulbs decorated with ivy.” As big foodies, the catering was an important part of their celebration too, with lamb shank for the wedding breakfast, a trio of desserts and stone-baked pizza for the evening.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Even though the weather was terrible, rain didn’t stop play. “Steph, our photographer, made me feel so calm, reassuring us that despite the rain we were going to have a terrific day. She kept a keen eye on the weather and made sure we had our couple photos and some group shots taken outside in the beautiful setting as soon as the rain stopped,” recalls Emily. “We had a lovely acoustic duo complete a beautiful set as the rain poured and our guests sheltered in a ‘just-in-case’ marquee or under the covering of the bar. They were from the band The Wilders and the rest of the members joined us for the evening party. Everyone loved them and they kept the party going all night!” 37 

“Although we had a few hiccups along the way, with some people unable to attend due to Covid, as well as a petrol crisis, closed roads, and torrential rain, we had a brilliant time and it was amazing to have so many family and friends all under one roof to celebrate with us.” – Emily

ork first brought Abby and John together. She’s a nurse and he’s a doctor and they were in the same department together briefly before meeting up again the following year for a coffee. They clicked, she fell for his humour and kindness and he was attracted not only by her looks, but her generous, caring nature too. “From our first date his dry sense of humour made me laugh and has done ever since,” adds Abby. They were together for two-and-a-half years before John asked her to marry him. It happened on holiday in Bora Bora, almost exactly a year after she’d moved up to

Yorkshire with him for work. “We were staying on a boat travelling the islands with family and one morning at sunrise John and I went over to a tiny uninhabited island for a swim and he got down on one knee,” she reveals. “I had an idea it was going to happen at some point but the actual proposal was a complete surprise. It was intimate and very special with just the two of us on the sandbank island.” They were married on 11th September, 2021 at St John’s Church Rownhams in Hampshire, followed by a reception at Rhinefield House Hotel, Brockenhurst. Read on for Abby’s account of their big day…

We were married in the local church where I was christened in the place where I grew up. My grandma used to grow a beautiful lilac-coloured type of rose in her garden so our florist Jo chose one in the same shade to include in the wedding flowers.

The bridesmaids’ dresses complemented the lilac and plum colour scheme perfectly.

“John and his groomsmen wore the same suits but he had an ivory tie to stand out from the rest. We also hired a matching child’s outfit for our pageboy.” 42

REAL WEDDINGS

We wanted the wedding to be traditional but also very relaxed. Rhinefield House was ideal for the reception as it had a formal atmosphere for the wedding breakfast and chilled areas for the party, as well as stunning grounds and the food was amazing too! My parents actually chose the wedding transport. It was really lovely to have the traditional cars on the day and they suited the venue perfectly. We designed and made the table plan ourselves.

Harpist Leanne Hopkins performed during the reception and wedding breakfast. She played a huge variety of songs and was just perfect.

I had a glimpse of the reception flowers but didn’t see the finished fireplace arrangement until after the ceremony and it took my breath away. They were absolutely gorgeous and the fragrance filled the whole room. 43

Jo is an amazing florist and she definitely went above and beyond for us. The flowers were incredible, and she put in so much work to make our vision come to life.

ABBY’S TOP TIP Get to know your suppliers and pick the ones that you feel totally comfortable with, then give them your vision and trust in them!

My mum also made a separate fruitcake, which featured a novelty cake topper of John and I in our work uniforms, which was a lovely personal touch.

We wanted a cake with different flavours that tasted amazing. John liked the marbled look and I liked lace stencilling so Sarah, our cake maker, created one that had both. We were originally only going to have four tiers but the samples all tasted so good that we couldn’t pick!

The fireworks display was set to two special songs that held memories for us both and it looked magical over the pond at Rhinefield House.

Our band The Boomtown Boppers was absolutely amazing. We saw the guys play on one of our first dates and they’re brilliant musicians. They had everyone up and dancing and received so many compliments from our guests!

“It was amazing to be surrounded by friends and family. The majority of our guests also work in healthcare and after such a difficult time everyone was ready to have fun and enjoy the day.” THE W-DAY LINE-UP

Arty ELEGANCE

PHOTO SHOOT

The creative juices were flowing at brand new wedding and events venue Palais des Vaches in Hampshire Images courtesy of Melissa Megan Photography

I

nspired by the stunning transformation of what was once an old cow barn and goat pen, this stunning photo shoot paints a perfect picture of bridal elegance. Set at new Hampshire wedding venue Palais des Vaches Gallery in Lower Exbury, the beautiful surroundings and one-of-kind backdrop provided a unique canvas for local suppliers to work their magic. Overlooking the Solent and Isle of Wight, the venue launched in July 2021 in all its art-gallery glory offering a wealth of standout spaces for weddings with a difference. Shoot and wedding coordinator Hampshire-based Natasha Gilchrist said, “It was obvious the styling should incorporate the artwork and to make a feature of the gallery, as well as the beautiful location by the Beaulieu River. Combining sculptures with paintbrushes and picture frames draped in florals, as well as an art-inspired wedding cake and stationery, it all worked perfectly within the gallery setting. We wanted the colour scheme to feel warm and soft not only to suit the autumnal, wintry time of year, but also to give it that sense of grandeur. Choosing mustard, sage and rust as our main colours, mixed with a hint of blush pink, tangerine and gold, gave the shoot the arty bridal opulence we were aiming for.”

Wedding

WOW FACTOR How to look and feel your big-day best

P

lanning a wedding can be pretty hectic, particularly if you’re working to a tight timetable. To enjoy the journey, take time out now and again, enjoy a night in together and declare it a wedding-free zone! Delegate tasks if you can and prioritise the most important things, like being kind to yourself and not sweating the small stuff. Sleepless nights, stress and anxiety are barriers to becoming the relaxed, radiant bride of your dreams so remember to factor in some all-important ‘me-time’. To help you and the whole bridal gang step out in style, we asked local experts from around the region to share some of their industry insight.

FINDING THE ONE You’ve said ‘yes’, the ring’s on your finger, the date and venue’s booked, so what’s next? The dress, of course! Some may have already been dreaming of their perfect gown before even finding their perfect partner! Whatever camp you’re in, the dress shopping is an important part of the journey and should be a fun and memorable experience. Even if you don’t have that special moment when you know you’ve found the one, don’t worry not everyone gets emotional and teary-eyed. It’s great to get it in the bag though and move on to all the other fun stuff!

Flattering silhouettes

People come in all shapes and sizes and an experienced bridal consultant will be able to advise on what shapes, styles and details are the most flattering. Lorraine Curtis, owner of Olive Blossom Bridal in Overton, Hampshire (www.oliveblossombridal.co.uk) shares some of her expert insight. ❤ Rectangle For this type of body shape, A-line dresses can help create an hour-glass silhouette, sheath gowns are great to accentuate a lean frame and an empire cut will create a defined waist. ❤ Apple If you have a full bust with little waist definition, A-line, drop-waist and ball gowns will help elongate your silhouette and a deep V-neck will not only flatter your bust, but also draw attention away from your waistline. ❤ Pear For those who are smaller up top than below, with hips wider than your shoulders, A-line and ball gowns will balance out the torso and bust. A V-neckline or spaghetti straps also help to give a more slender effect. ❤ Hourglass For an hourglass figure the most flattering shapes are sheath, mermaid and ballgown to show off your curves. ❤ Inverted triangle For inverted triangle body shapes a mermaid, trumpet, short dress or ballgown will balance out your frame. Strapless or halter neck lines also create the illusion of narrower shoulders. 52

Pronovias Kelly

LORRAINE’S TOP TIP Be open minded when shopping for your wedding gown. Nine times out of 10 brides walk away with something completely different to what they thought they’d choose, so expect the unexpected. Even if you think there are certain styles you can’t wear or won’t suit you, trust your bridal stylist, they really do know their stuff and can help you find something that looks sensational.

From the Pure Collection of restored vintage dresses

LOOKING YOUR BEST From the Evolution Collection of contemporary dresses crafted from vintage pieces.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING REINVENTED Green and sustainable are key buzzwords for 2022 weddings as more and more newlyweds-to-be become increasingly aware of eco credentials and the carbon footprint of their big day. Choosing a vintage dress can tick a lot of boxes not just for your something old, but something green too. “If vintage style isn’t your thing, you may be surprised to discover how some designs from decades ago can look as fresh and contemporary as if they’d just come off the catwalk,” explains Erica Arnold, owner of Hampshirebased Real Green Dress, specialists in original restored vintage and beautiful remodelled gowns. To find out more visit www.realgreendress.com

NOT JUST A WHITE WEDDING Finding the one is like no other shopping experience. There’s so much emotion invested in the process that it can evoke a whole range of feelings. “When choosing your dress it always helps to have the style of your wedding in mind and the venue,” advises Sarah Pardey of Sarah Jane Bridal in Poole, Dorset (www.facebook.com/pg/ sarahjanebridalboutique). She believes colour is set to be one of the big trends for 2022, particularly delicate hues like blush, champagne and soft nude tones. “Blush and warm shades are great for brides with a pale complexion as they can enhance their skin tone,” adds Sarah. “Black wedding gowns are also big – they look fabulous but are very daring and definitely not for the faint-hearted. Again, it’s best to consider your venue and wedding style before choosing one.”

Aliana Ellis Bridals

SARAH’S TOP TIP When searching for your dream dress, try to limit the number of boutiques you visit to no more than three as it can get very confusing.

HAVE FUN Co-owners of award-winning Creatiques Bridal Boutique in Southsea (www.creatiques.co.uk) Andrew and Rob Pearce have a wealth of experience in the wedding industry. Their message to brides-to-be is to make the most of the dress shopping, relax and enjoy it. They advise, “Choose very carefully who you invite to come with you. Some brides feel under pressure to ask members of the family or people who may be challenging and why would you want that hanging over your wedding-gown experience? It should be fun!”

Dreama by Justin Alexander

ANDREW AND ROB’S TOP TIP Do your research and find a reputable boutique. Look at reviews and check out their social media for pictures of real brides and to get an insight into their experience and feedback.

MINDFUL MAKEOVERS The dress, bridal hair and make-up are all important we know, but what about the inner you? In today’s ‘Insta-perfect’ world, the pressures can be overwhelming and health and beauty expert Harriet Forrester (www.facebook.com/beautybyharrietemma) believes looking after your mental wellbeing should be a priority too. She says, “Being the best version of yourself has to be based on how you feel which can easily be neglected when you’re busy planning a wedding. As much as it’s great to have the right look, it’s important to get your mental health right too. Prior to the big day, make sure you find time to relax and just as importantly to exercise and be active. It’s not just about body image, but also about giving yourself the right head space, whether that’s through yoga, running or a high-intensity interval training session. Even if you’re busy, try to invest the time to make it happen, it really does make all the difference.” To make the most of your make-up trial Heather advises: ❤ Try to look for inspiration from pictures of people where little or no filters have been used and with similar hair, skin, and eyecolouring to your own. ❤ Ideally book your trial around eight to 12 weeks before the wedding. Any later could be a rush and you don’t want to struggle to get an appointment, equally too far in advance and your style may change. ❤ Provide a few options if you can, but equally trust your makeup artist. We really do understand what looks, colours and styles work. ❤ Pre-plan your trial. Are you happy for people to see your bridal make-up, or do you want to keep it a surprise? ❤ Prep your skin either by investing in a facial a few days before your appointment or exfoliate and use a hydrating mask the day before. ❤ Sleep, water, diet – three essentials to be more aware of before your pre-wedding makeover and in the run-up to your big day as it can make all the difference to how you look and feel. 53

LOOKING YOUR BEST BEAUTIFUL YOU For brides who don’t usually wear make-up, what to choose can be daunting. If you want to go bare, that’s fine but subtle touches can work wonders to enhance rather than transform natural beauty, great for those all-important bridal photos. This is where expert help and guidance really comes into its own to help boost confidence. Southampton-based makeup artist Melinda Hollis (www.makeoversbymelinda.co.uk) shares some dos and don’ts to help guide you. Do have at least one trial a few months before the wedding to not only give you peace of mind about how you will look, but also to allow plenty of time if you decide you want to try something else. Do experiment, ask your make-up artist to do one eye very natural and the other slightly more glam. This will help you discover what you’re comfortable with and you could even opt for a combination of the two. Do find a professional who specialises in natural make-up. Look at the images on their website and social media to get an idea of what they do before booking. Don’t forget to have a conversation with your make-up artist to discuss your ideas and make sure you are both on the same wavelength to avoid any unwanted surprises. Don’t be afraid to ask to look in the mirror as you go along to see the look gradually develop so it isn’t a shock at the end, especially if you’re not used to seeing yourself with make-up on. Do bring someone with you whose opinion you trust for their take on what works and what doesn’t. MELINDA’S TOP TIP Make sure your make-up brings out your best features and enhances the overall look you want to achieve. Beware of going for something completely different; be true to yourself so you feel confident, happy and love how you look.

MUM’S THE WORD The future looks bright for the other leading lady in the bridal party. The year ahead promises plenty of bright bold colours for mothers-of-the-bride and -groom, reports Debbie Hill, owner of special occasion wear boutique Charisma of Fawley (www.charismaoffawley.co.uk). She says, “We’re seeing a shift towards a more adventurous colour palette. Usually, we would add a bold colour as an accent but this year we’re looking at a lot more vivid tones used in blocks to make a statement with shades like Super Blue and Citrus Sours likely to be key for the forthcoming spring/summer season.” However, no matter what the latest hot colour is, it has to complement your complexion. “It’s important to take this into account when asking mums to dress in something to fit in with a specific colour scheme as not all shades work for every skin tone. Ultimately the main goal is to have everyone looking and feeling amazing,” adds Debbie. Two-piece in Chartreuse Tropical from the new Ispirato collection

BRING ON THE BOYS

If you’re looking for a coordinated effect for the whole wedding gang, look for outfits for the groom and his best boys to reflect the theme, season, style or colour scheme. For those with a large groom’s party, it can be a headache though, trying to get everyone together to go shopping or for fittings. Sarah Harper of Charles Gale Hire (www.charlesgalehire.co.uk) offers some handy hints to help make sure everyone looks their big-day best. ❤ Take fabric and colour swatches with you when you go shopping. ❤ A good time to start looking for outfits is around six months before the big day, although earlier is fine if you prefer. ❤ For the first visit try to restrict numbers to just the two of you or the groom and their best man maybe. ❤ Not everyone needs to be measured at the same time, although sometimes it’s a good excuse for a ‘boys’ day out’ afterwards. ❤ Don’t worry if anyone living out of the area can’t be there, they should be able to get measured elsewhere. ❤ If you have a set budget, let your supplier know so they can work with it to get the look you want. ❤ Sometimes it’s good to have the groomsmen in slightly different outfits with possibly a different waistcoat or neckwear to the groom, to make sure he stands out. ❤ Any children in the party don’t need to come in for fittings until around four weeks before the wedding as they have a habit of growing when you least expect it! 55

JEWELLERY AND ACCESSORIES

IN THE KNOW Adding the finishing touches to your bridal attire can really give it w-day wow factor. Be sure to pick the right pieces with our handy guide... ❤ Carat A carat is the measure of the weight of the gem. One carat is equal to a fifth of a gram and can also be divided into 100 points, with 25 points being equal to a quarter of a carat. Because smaller carats are more common, they’re less valuable than gems of a higher grade. ❤ Colour Diamonds are also marked on colour. Although they generally appear colourless, they actually include subtle shades of yellow and brown. Colourless gems are marked between D and F, while stones graded S to Z are yellow in colour. The further you work down the alphabet, the more colour the gem will contain and therefore the less valuable it is. ❤ Clarity A gem’s clarity is based on how light is reflected into and back out of the stone. This can be affected by small marks called inclusions. It’s extremely rare to find a jewel that has no inclusions and its worth is dependent on how many there are. The clarity grades are: FL – Flawless IF – Internally flawless VVS – Very, very slightly included VS – Very slightly included SI – Slightly included I – Included ❤ Cut Brilliant – the traditional shape of an engagement ring. A brilliant-cut gem features a cone-shaped point underneath its round-faced to maximise the return of light passed through. Princess – the top of a princess cut is square with pointed corners and is pyramid-shaped sideways on. Emerald – with a rectangular shape and cropped corners, the emerald cut is popular with Art Deco-inspired jewellery. Marquise – an elongated shape with pointed edge. Said to mirror the smile of the Marquise of Pompadour, it was commissioned by King Louis XIV. Oval – a symmetrical oval design developed in the ’60s as a twist on the brilliant cut. Baguette – popular for wedding rings, baguette cuts are slender and rectangular. Pear – also known as a teardrop cut, a pear cut features a single point and a rounded edge. Heart – styled in the shape of a heart, this cut is seen as the most romantic of all. Radiant – with 70 facets and distinguished by its cropped corners, the radiant cut is popularly a rectangle but can also be square in shape. Cushion – cushion cuts have rounded corners and large facets to increase the brilliance of the gem, they can be both a square or rectangle. Trilliant – a dramatic cut, it’s traditionally triangular but can also be rounded

❤ Gem stones Diamonds – diamonds are the symbol of love: the tip of cupid’s arrow was said to be adorned with the colourless gems. Sapphire – the stone has increased in popularity since Prince William presented the Duchess of Cambridge with his late mother’s sapphire engagement ring. The blue stone was discovered in India in 1880 and is said to represent truth and loyalty. Ruby – the deep red stones are mined in Asia and were originally used to decorate amour as they’re believed to bring good fortune. Amethyst – a type of quartz, the clear purple stone was originally used by the ancient Greeks for wine goblets as its thought to stop intoxication. Tanzanite – celebrated as the 20th-century gemstone after being discovered in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in the ’60s, tanzanite is extremely rare and only found in one place worldwide. Emerald – said to represent luxury, rich green emeralds are found in Egypt, close to the Red Sea. Garnet – most commonly recognised as a red stone, garnet is a popular choice for vintage jewellery. The gem can also be found in shades of violet, green, black, yellow and a rare blue. Aquamarine – the most versatile of jewels, aquamarine is a pale blue or turquoise green shade and is found in many African nations. Pearl – pearls are a popular choice for brides on their big day. Created by shelled molluscs, there are two types: saltwater, which are usually rounder; and freshwater, which can vary in shape, size and colour.

UP-AND-COMING ALTERNATIVES Many brides are breaking tradition when it comes to choosing their bridal jewellery by going with less popular stones, which are just as beautiful – these are the five to keep an eye out for... ❤ Morganite ❤ Moissanite ❤ Onyx ❤ Tourmaline BIRTHSTONES ❤ Labradorite January – Garnet | February – Amethyst March – Aquamarine | April – Diamond May – Emerald | June – Pearl July – Ruby | August – Peridot September – Sapphire | October – Opal

Q&A Latest looks for the year ahead

THE NATURAL TOUCH I don’t usually wear make-up and I’ve no idea about the latest products or looks for brides. What would you suggest for my big day? Jess says: Many brides want a more natural look with glowing skin, especially after spending more time at home wearing no make-up during lockdown, they’re now looking to embrace their natural beauty more. For the big day, make-up needs to be long lasting though and look beautiful in the photographs, so finding a happy medium is important and that’s where a professional make-up artist comes in. Firstly, good results begin with amazing skincare, so start your routine as soon as you can. I absolutely love the Alumier cleanser used with a hot cloth or sponge, as well as their vitamin C serum and hydrating night cream. It’s really important to use sun protection daily, even in the winter, to avoid damage to your skin from harmful rays and the Alumier Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum SPF40 photographs beautifully under foundation. Vegan brand Ark’s reverse gravity eye cream is a favourite with my brides. Other high-end and cruelty-free ranges include leading names such as Hourglass, whose blushers are amazing, HUDA lipgloss stains come in some beautiful berry shades that suit all skin tones and MORPHE and Charlotte Tilbury are great for eyeshadows.

Charlotte Tilbury also has fabulous foundations ranging from Airbrush Flawless for medium coverage to Wonder Glow for a lighter finish. For a beautiful bridal glow, apply a dab of ICONIC London highlighter on the cheekbones and finish with Hourglass Veil powder, which corrects shine without looking powdery. Finish with a fixing spray such as ICONIC London for a subtle glow or Charlotte Tilbury for a dewy effect. This is a must-have on a summer’s day and remember to always have some blotting sheets handy too! Jess Robinson | Make-up artist | www.modelmakeovers.co.uk

PARTY ON What’s hot for bridal hair and make-up in 2022? Caroline says: The knock-on effect of the pandemic means we’re gearing up for more sequel wedding parties in the year ahead as well as our normal weddings! Many of our brides who got married in 2021 or the year before, opted for more intimate micro weddings where we just looked after the bride, chief bridesmaid and maybe mum too. Some postponed their big celebration until restrictions were lifted, so this year we’re seeing weddings and post-wedding parties where we’re back doing hair and make-up for the whole gang. We’re talking full-on party style, full of soft glam make-up, fab updos and wonderful long Hollywood waves.

TOP TIPS FOR 2022 ♥ If you’re not a big make-up wearer but still want to look amazing on your big day, we love the less-is-more approach. Enhancing your natural complexion with make-up will ensure you still look like yourself, just a more glamorous version! ♥ Cream products with a soft luminous finish will make your skin look radiant, fresh and naturally dewy without looking over done, think cream blush, eyeshadows and illuminating primers and foundations. ♥ Love your skin tone. Many brides want their skin to look warmer no matter what the season when in fact they’re a pale English rose. It’s a huge mistake to pile on bronzer though, instead we like to use a pink-toned pressed powder or loose powder to create natural warmth and luminosity. BUZZ BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Suffering from a winter skin slump? One of the best ingredients to get your through it is hyaluronic acid, which has an amazing way of getting that missing glow and hydration back on track. Faye Purcell, product development chemist and skincare expert at Q+A says, “Being exposed to winter environments can cause the outer layer of skin to dry out, leading to irritation, flakiness and lack of radiance. Opting for a humectant like hyaluronic acid is vital as it draws moisture from the air into the skin. When it’s absorbed it can release that moisture directly into our cells and help retain it for longer.” Check out Q+A’s latest range focusing on this all-important ingredient, which includes a Hydrating Cleanser (£7.50), Face Mist (£6.50) and Facial Serum (£6.50). We’re all washing our hands a lot more often than we used to and while it’s super-important to keep that up, it does cause the skin to suffer. Frequent use of hand sanitiser too can compromise the skin’s microbiome, leading to dryness, roughness and signs of ageing. If these woes sound familiar, check out Mavala’s new Prebiotic Hand Cream. With a rich formula it offers immediate comfort to those with sensitive, delicate and dry hands. It contains 87 per cent naturalorigin ingredients and offers the necessary nutrients to maintain the balance of microbiological activity of the skin. What I also love is that it doesn’t leave behind that annoying greasy residue that puts me off a lot of hand creams. It sinks in fast and my cuppa doesn’t slip through my fingers! It’s now a desk essential. You can find Mavala Prebiotic Hand Cream in leading pharmacies, priced at £16.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Local experts on what’s hot for weddings in 2022

LET THE MUSIC PLAY ON

The soundtrack to your big day can evoke lifelong memories, so it pays to get it right. Here drummer Tom Phillips and bass guitarist Al Moghadam of popular Southampton wedding band The Big Town Boppers share some top tips and industry insight for the year ahead. ❤ Music and entertainment Live music at weddings will be making a big comeback in 2022. One thing we’ve noticed after lockdown is just how much people appreciate having live music again and we fully expect that to continue. Couples often like to mix it up with a combination of live music and DJ sets throughout the evening. Afternoon acoustic music during the drinks reception or any lulls in the proceedings looks set to be popular too, going all out to make sure there’s entertainment throughout the day. ❤ Emerging trends Post-lockdowns, we’ve noticed a tendency towards more lavish weddings with fireworks, choreographed first dances, grand and opulent venues and, of course, more guests! It’s gorgeous and fun to be part of, even with all the extra organisation involved. People have missed seeing each other and nothing brings everyone together quite like a wedding, so many newlyweds-to-be are really going all-out with their plans and guest lists. ❤ Popular music styles The mainstays of Motown, classic rock, and pop bangers (old and new) are always a big draw. The trick is to keep things interesting – good bands set themselves apart from the rest by doing things in their own way; like playing traditional hits in a really modern style, or merging songs with medleys and introducing other hidden surprises. It’s unexpected and exciting, and when you hear a great big roaring cheer as one song shifts into another, you know it’s working! ❤ Advantages of live music As well as surprising audiences, live music is versatile and can adapt to the venue, crowd and the couple’s wishes. A good band will read the room and adjust their set or tune their sound to the environment on the fly. Plus, it gives audiences a chance to participate in a way that you can’t with a set playlist. We always like to get everyone involved and singing along as live music is and will always be about how it makes people feel. ❤ Choosing and booking There’s so much to consider when arranging a wedding, so to keep things simple, we’ve limited it to our three top tips:

1. Some venues don’t suit live music, and that’s OK! Having live music may not be a deciding factor in choosing where you want to get married, but if it is really important to you, there are a couple of things to consider: •Venues sometimes have sound limiters and while bands will accommodate as much as possible, it can really impact on what they can do. •If there are lots of different rooms your guests will naturally disperse, so it can be harder to get that live music party atmosphere going. This can be the case even without live music, particularly if the bar is set away from the reception room. 2. See your band/entertainment perform before you book! You can make a music video or recording sound great, but going to see your band live will give you a much better sense of whether they bring energy to the room. Bands are a bit like wedding dresses – you’ll just know if they’re the one! 3. Reception timings Planning reception timings is important and it helps you get the most out of the money you’ve spent. •If at all possible, don’t start live music before 8pm, 300 weddings down and we can safely say that people need time to settle into the evening and have a few drinks before they’re truly ready to party. Also try to plan sets around other evening entertainment like fireworks and food. Big Town Boppers Band | www.bigtownboppers.co.uk 81

REGENCY ROMANCE

Laura Denny of Hampshire-based Spiral Events sees more Regency-themed weddings coming through, inspired by the popular period drama Bridgerton. Gifts with sentiment are also on the rise in place of standard favours for guests. “As people haven’t been able to see each other for a while the meaning behind the gift has become more important,” she reports. Also to look out for in the wake of the pandemic, Laura warns of rollercoaster emotions. “Many couples have waited so long for their big days to arrive, that the reality of them actually getting married hasn’t hit. We’ve worked with brides that have said that they didn’t feel like it was ever going to happen or they were waiting for something else to go wrong. So the emotional hit on the actual wedding day can be big, not only for them, but their guests too. Our advice is to try and prepare for it and have some extra tissues to hand at the front of the aisle.” Spiral Events | www.spiralevents.co.uk

ON-TREND WEDDINGS

Anouska Parsons, event manager and founder of Hampshire-based event agency Raggy&Boo shares her insight into key trends for 2022. ❤ Small and intimate Intimate weddings have made a big comeback and are likely to stick around. Some couples who had to cancel their original plans realised that the big wedding day wasn’t necessarily what they wanted after all. The pros of a scaled-down affair mean you can be more extravagant with your ideas or you might want to save cash for an almighty celebration or dream honeymoon afterwards! ❤ Eco-friendly and earthy tones During the pandemic people have been spending more time outdoors and have become more connected to the environment. Increasingly newlywedsto-be want to incorporate their eco-ethos into their big day, not only in terms of recycling, reducing and re-using but also in their big-day colour palette, so more earthy tones will be making an appearance in 2022. ❤ Weekday weddings There’s still a large backlog of postponed bookings due to the pandemic 82

so it’s likely that in 2022 we will be seeing a big trend for weekday weddings. Even though it can be a little trickier for guests, it’s a great way to benefit from reduced rates, which can be a bonus for your family and friends too, if they need to book a hotel room. ❤ Going local Backing small businesses and shopping locally is increasingly at the forefront of people’s minds, not only to support them through the recent turbulent times, but also from an environmental aspect. More and more couples are choosing to use suppliers local to their venue and long may it stay that way. ❤ Sequel weddings Many couples who were deprived of their big wedding day due to Covid opted to go ahead and tie the knot despite restrictions and organise a follow-up celebration afterwards when they can hit the dancefloor and party into the night with all their friends and family. HONEYMOON

A round up of new openings and honeymoon essentials

When the big day is over, it’s time for newlyweds to pack for the honeymoon! Whether sunbathing on a secluded island or adventuring on an adrenaline-fuelled getaway, gift specialist Farrar and Tanner has everything you need to make the honeymoon even more memorable...

The modern and sophisticated style of the Wolf Windsor watch box elegantly displays and safely stores your watch collection. The grained vegan leather finish surrounds a glass window which lets you view and easily choose your timepiece for the day. A beautiful gift that can be personalised with an engraved message on a silver plate on the front.

The elegant Evo watch, from the iconic Mondaine series, features a stainless steel case, gently rounded with a slightly domed sapphire glass. This creates a magnifying effect accentuating the famous Mondaine watch face. With its large dial, clear hour and minutes lines and distinctive hands, the Evo has a truly timeless feel.

The Barbour wash bag is practical, classically stylish and highly durable. Featuring a cream tartan print, the bag has been designed to conveniently store your make-up and travel essentials. It has a zip-around fastening for easy access, an internal zip pocket for keeping your precious and valuable items, and a PU leather handle to carry or hang up for neat storing.

Stackers’ new larger version of its popular travel jewellery box, can now house more precious items! Featuring a soft velvet lining, there’s a section for storing rings and earrings and a central area divider (removable) perfect for necklaces or bracelets. There’s also a charming petite travel box and, to make it a truly personal gift, why not add a loved one’s initials?

Manufactured by Hans Kniebes, the soft premium leather case has a modern and elegant design with a zip fastening. Held securely inside are heat-hardened nail scissors, clippers and nail file, slanted tweezers, cuticle pusher and a hoopstick. For an individual touch, you can add personalised engraving to the nail clippers.

Travel in elegance and style with the Chelsea weekender bag by Ashwood Leather. Stunningly crafted from carefully chosen leather this is the ideal choice for weekend city breaks and minimoons. Finished in a high-shine chestnut shade, the included luggage tag can be embossed with a name or short message.

SWITZERLAND

Ruby Mimi in Zurich opened in October 2021, and is the first hotel of the Munich-based Ruby Group, to open in Switzerland. Situated where one of the first cinemas in Zurich used to thrill audiences more than 100 years ago, the Art Deco-listed hotel’s 208 rooms are spread over its seven floors. The new hotel takes guests on a journey back to the exciting golden era of Hollywood of the 1910s and 1920s with its charming cinema hall. A reminder of the building’s history, its cosy armchairs, red velvet curtains and popcorn machine create a retro cinema feeling. Ruby Hotels follow a clear structure: a location in the heart of the city, top design and high-quality furnishings, focusing on the essentials in order to remain affordable. There are six different room categories available at Ruby Mimi in Zurich, ranging from the NEST Rooms and COSY Rooms to the spacious LOFT Rooms and STAR Rooms which are particularly striking. They are inspired by five starlets of the 1910s who all bore the name Mimi, and each of the rooms feature historical dressing tables and a chaise longue. Average room rates range from CHF 210-230 per night. For more information, visit www.ruby-hotels.com/mimi

DO NOT DISTURB

OASIS OF CALM

A careful renovation has preserved features while adding in contemporary comforts in both the white-bricked Pavilion and Temple buildings that make up this Berkshire-based YTL Hotels property. It’s accessed via a footbridge (after checking in at the Boat House on the mainland) and is home to luxury accommodation in a choice of 40 stylish bedrooms and The Wedgewood Suite commanding prime position in the original Temple building with wrap-around views. As the hotel’s grandest offering for newlyweds, this spacious Grade I listed suite boasts character features including the original Wedgewood blue ceiling with contrasting white friezes, a custom-designed bed with an upholstered headboard, a separate seating area and a walk-in closet with an exposed bath tub. The Barn Rooms, located off the island adjacent to the private residences, offer a great option for wedding guests equipped with marble en suite bathrooms and walk-in showers.

The Floating Spa By Spa Village is nestled in a tranquil spot moored on the banks of the river. It’s only open to hotel residents and the wellness journey starts the moment you step onboard with a choice of indulgent treatments. A must-try is The Floating Massage by Moss of the Isles performed while lying on an aqua cushion, giving the illusion you’re floating on a cloud of warm water.

MADE FOR ROMANCE Weddings take place in a choice of elegant function suites located in the Pavilion. Ceremonies are held in the impressive River Room with its floor-to-ceiling windows revealing far-flung views of the river and idyllic surroundings. There’s direct access to a private patio area with a firepit and couples wanting an outdoor ceremony can enjoy the foliage-clad gazebo with guests seated outside on the lawn. The Art Deco-inspired Marlborough Ballroom

THEMED VENUES

with a statement botanical chandelier, mirrored panelling and doors leading to the manicured grounds hosts the wedding breakfast and reception, and both this and the River Room can be hired exclusively. There’s also the option of securing a marquee for up to 300 guests from the hotel’s list of preferred suppliers, and exclusive use of the entire estate can be booked. Bespoke options are also available bride arriving by boat? Of course! An outdoor gathering under a stretch tent? The talented team can make it happen.

A FOODIE HEAVEN At the heart of the hotel is The Monkey Island Brasserie, flanked by an outdoor terrace boasting waterway views, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Couples passionate about food will love the relaxed, informal vibe and classic British dishes created using seasonal ingredients from local suppliers and the on-site herb garden (a stroll over to this is well worth it – spot the beehives and resident hens while you’re there, too!) On the dinner menu is a pan-fried fillet of chalk-stream trout served with salsa verdi and a butter aged 250-gram sirloin steak with Béarnaise sauce and hand-cut chips. The avocado toast served with a poached hen’s egg is the perfect fuel for the day at breakfast.

Those wishing to relax with an after-dinner drink can do so in The Monkey Bar where the Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve and Monkey Shoulder blended malt scotch whiskey are to be tried. For a cheeky late-night tipple, The Whiskey Snug, accessed via a secret staircase, is not to be missed, especially for the romantic view of the footbridge lit up at night.

WHAT’S NEW? The Shepherd’s Hideaway is nestled in a private spot in the grounds, decorated with contemporary countryside interiors. Memories can be made at this hand-crafted hut, with a celebratory afternoon tea or a gourmet picnic for between two and six guests that can be booked as an add-on to an overnight stay. Non-residents at the hotel are also welcome, perfect for visitors to the delightful village of Bray-on-Thames, where this island resides, to enjoy.

Book it: Nightly rates at Monkey Island Estate start from £275 per room, per night in a Temple Room. 01628 623 400, www.monkeyislandestate.co.uk www.facebook.com/MonkeyIslandEstate www.instagram.com/monkeyislandestate
